TOM AND SARA BECNEL ON VISION, FAMILY, AND THE PLACE THAT SHAPED THEM BOTH

LONG BEFORE SANDESTIN GOLF AND BEACH RESORT became one of the Emerald Coast’s most recognizable destinations, it was simply a stretch of remarkable land between two bodies of water. The Gulf of Mexico shimmered on one side, the Choctawhatchee Bay stretched calmly on the other, and the miles in between held a kind of promise that few places possess. Over the decades, many people have contributed to the story of Sandestin. But in 2010, when developer Tom Becnel purchased the 2,400-acre resort, a new chapter began, one defined not only by development and vision, but by family.

Today, that story is being carried forward by the next generation. As President of Sandestin Investments, Sara Becnel leads the strategic development and operations of the resort her father once envisioned. Growing up, Sara vacationed along Florida’s Emerald Coast with her family, experiences that shaped her early appreciation for the beauty, lifestyle, and sense of escape this stretch of coastline offers. Now raising her own child within the Sandestin community, Sara’s connection to the area has come full circle, transforming a place that once inspired her as a visitor into the setting where she is helping shape its future.

A DEVELOPER’S VISION

Tom Becnel has spent more than five decades shaping skylines and communities across the country. From early development projects in Lafayette, Louisiana, to spearheading 18 projects in Hawaii and later transforming landscapes in South Florida, as well as along the Emerald Coast in Destin and Sandestin, his career has been defined by a unique ability to see potential where others saw only limitations.

Along the way, he built a diverse portfolio that spans office buildings, residential communities, condominiums, and commercial developments. His work eventually brought him to Florida’s Emerald Coast, where he recognized an area poised for growth.

He began with projects like Shoreline Towers on Destin’s Holiday Isle and the Baypoint luxury condominium in Naples before continuing his work along the shoreline between Destin and Miramar Beach in the early 2000s.

But it was in 2010 that Tom took on what would become one of the defining projects of his career: the purchase of Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

At the time, Sandestin already carried decades of history. The land itself had a past that was anything but ordinary. Originally purchased for crops and livestock, the Gulf-side property was requisitioned during World War II for military research, where captured German “buzz bomb” missiles were studied and early American rocket tests were conducted from hidden bunkers that still exist today.

Destin was always a special place growing up. Making memories here with my family was a big part of what ultimately drew me back to this area after I graduated from college,” she says. “The beauty and lifestyle of the Emerald Coast always stayed with me.”

In the decades that followed, the land nearly became several very different things. At one point, Walt Disney himself considered purchasing the property while exploring ideas that would later evolve into Disney World. Later, investors from the Indianapolis Speedway envisioned a racetrack along the coast.

Instead, developers ultimately saw an opportunity to build a resort community between Santa Rosa Beach and Destin, combining the two names to create “Sandestin.”

By the time Tom Becnel acquired the resort, Sandestin had already grown into a vibrant destination with golf courses, neighborhoods, restaurants, and The Village of Baytowne Wharf serving as its town center. But Tom saw even greater potential ahead.

Under his ownership, Sandestin Investments began evolving the resort with a focus on thoughtful

development that enhanced both the guest experience and the longterm vitality of the community.

Among the most notable projects were the development of Osprey Pointe and the opening of Hotel Effie Sandestin in 2021, a signature luxury hotel that quickly became one of the most distinctive hospitality offerings on the Emerald Coast.

GROWING UP ON THE EMERALD COAST

While Tom approached Sandestin through the lens of a developer, Sara’s connection to the area began much earlier through the eyes of a child. Born and raised in Louisiana, she grew up vacationing in Destin with her family before eventually making the move to the Emerald Coast herself. Like so many who discover this stretch of coastline, those early trips left a lasting impression.

“Destin was always a special place growing up. Making memories here with my family was a big part of what ultimately drew me back to this area after I graduated from college,” she says. “The beauty and lifestyle of the Emerald Coast always stayed with me.”

Those early experiences shaped not only her memories but eventually her career path. Sara began working in hospitality at just 14 years old in food and beverage and went on to earn a degree in economics from Rollins College. Her professional journey included a variety of roles, from housekeeping and engineering to front desk operations, along with experience in luxury retail and entrepreneurship as the owner of a Verizon Wireless store.

When the opportunity arose to return and work within the family’s growing business on the Emerald Coast, the decision felt natural.

In 2012, she officially joined the resort as Director of Retail. Her leadership quickly made an impact, overseeing major retail remodels and elevating the guest experience across the resort.

What followed was a rapid progression through leadership roles. As Executive Director and later Vice President of Development, Sara led major initiatives, including the renovations of the Linkside and Baytowne Conference Centers, and played a key role in the development of both Osprey Pointe and Hotel Effie.

Today, she not only leads the resort’s development and

operations but is also raising her own child here, continuing the cycle of memories that first inspired her.

LEADERSHIP THROUGH CHALLENGE

One of the most defining moments in Sara’s leadership came during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Serving simultaneously as General Manager and Vice President of Development, she helped guide the resort through one of the most challenging periods in hospitality history. Through decisive leadership and a focus on building a strong executive team, Sandestin was able to navigate the crisis while maintaining profitability and stability.

Her ability to lead through uncertainty ultimately led to her promotion to President of Sandestin Investments in 2023.

Since then, Sara has continued to expand her influence across the resort and beyond. In 2024, she became the majority owner of Sandestin Real Estate, guiding the brokerage through a strategic rebrand in partnership with The Agency, extending the brand’s reach while reinforcing Sandestin’s position within the global luxury real estate market.

At the same time, she has remained deeply committed to the resort itself, continuing to guide development projects and shape the next era of Sandestin.

FULL CIRCLE

Today, Sandestin is home to more than 70 distinct neighborhoods spread across its 2,400 acres. Miles of pedestrian, bike, and golf cart paths connect the beach to the bay, weaving through live oak groves, lakes, golf courses, and vibrant community spaces.

It’s a place where families return year after year, many of them creating traditions that span generations.

From childhood visits to leadership today, Sara Becnel’s journey reflects a deep, personal connection to the place she now helps shape.

For Sara, that generational story has become deeply personal.

She often finds herself reflecting on the same simple experiences she once had along the Emerald Coast as a young girl visiting with her family.

Those moments are a reminder that Sandestin is more than a resort; it’s a place where life unfolds.
