It is no small task to get through a South Florida social season. After a schedule full of black ties, client and charity cocktail parties, Sunday brunches and matches at the International Polo Club and our own Palm Beach Illustrated events, I am ready for a bit of a social break … for now. It seems we lament the toll the busy season takes on us every year, yet come August we are ready for the excitement again.

While our population thins for the summer, I’m reminded that people from all over the country—the world, really—come to our little slice of paradise to spend their winters in comfort and style. As I read the daily paper, I’m amazed to see what’s to come in our area: new hotels, shopping districts, restaurants and entertainment hubs. In the next year, for instance, we will see the opening of not one but four Trader Joe’s grocery stores in Palm Beach County.

High-end real estate also shows no signs of slowing down with the construction of GL Homes’ The Bridges and Seven Bridges in Delray Beach. Toll Brothers also is breaking ground on Royal Palm Polo in Boca Raton. This year, Harbourside Place opens for business in Jupiter with a four-diamond Wyndham Grand Hotel, retail, restaurants and office spaces. Burt Reynolds Ranch was finally approved for the development of 30 homes, and the Related Group is joining forces with Huizenga Holdings with a proposal to construct a 400-unit condo at Rybovich Marina, along West Palm Beach’s waterfront.

The season may be over, but the bustle of life in our area clearly is not. And that’s an especially good thing on June 15, when we honor the men in our lives for Father’s Day. My own dad passed away more than 20 years ago, but one of my favorite Father’s Day memories as a child was giving him a floating pool chair, which made him feel like the king of the castle. Every dad should feel that way, and with as many ways to spend Father’s Day—whether at a restaurant or in your own pool— Palm Beach County is the best place to celebrate.

Ah, June. At last we can sit back and toast—with a glass of well-chilled rosé, no doubt— the long summer wind-down, the antidote to the season’s mad whirl. And though we love the break from the party-a-minute pace, we often catch ourselves reminiscing about those wonderful moments spent in the company of friends old and new.

And what a season it was. In just six months, we met the likes of actor Michael Keaton, boxer Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, funnyman Darrell Hammond and former C.I.A. covert operative Valerie Plame. We watched Jimmy Buffett take the stage—surprise!—alongside the Zac Brown Band at the ForEverglades Benefit and sampled the culinary gifts of the nation’s greatest chefs at the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival. Out west, we watched world-class polo athletes play before capacity crowds and even put a few points on the scoreboard ourselves with the addition of the Palm Beach Illustrated 20-goal team.

There is no question this season was one for the books. And now that we don’t have to rush to yet another black-tie or must-attend cocktail, we love to revisit it. We invite you to leaf through nearly 40 pages—and more than 500 photos—of unforgettable people, events and experiences as we recap the social season. Think of it as our very own Palm Beach Yearbook.

See who wore what, who turned heads and who set trends in “Stepping Out in Style,” our salute to the most fashionable Palm Beachers (page 54). I think you’ll agree wearing turbans never looked so good. Our tribute to the aforementioned polo season comes on page 60. “Polo!” is a glittering array of spectator fashion, high-goal action and even a few famous faces.

“The New Guard” is a photomontage of the next generation of leaders (page 64), and “The Flavor Files” savors the moments of the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival, a great celebration of innovative food, drink and sustainability, and the Boca Bacchanal, South County’s premier foodie event (page 66). Finally, “Memorable Moments” (page 70) brings it all together with a spectrum of lively images that surely will make you smile as you relive the fun.

As you enjoy summer onboard your yacht, poolside or wherever your travels take you, I hope you will cherish our curated review of the social season. Remember: Come November, we will be doing it, gladly, all over again.

Like the stamped pages of a jet-setter’s passport, Louis Vuitton is touring worldly locations through its Travel Book Collection. The series, launched last year, depicts places such as Paris, New York and London through the eyes of artists who, until participating in the project, were unfamiliar with the destinations.

The result is a fresh, colorful discovery of a locale as interpreted through each artist’s preferred method of expression. The collection’s two latest tomes, released last month, portray Vietnam—sketched by Lorenzo Mattotti, who was born in Italy but raised in Paris—and Venice, presented by Japanese artist Jirô Taniguchi as a manga, a Japanese comic. At 18 years old, Luis Zepeda has already achieved artistic recognition among the likes of Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly and Robert Indiana. The senior at Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach is one of only 16 students nationwide to win a Portfolio Gold Medal in the 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, considered the most prestigious creative award program for students in grades 7-12. Zepeda’s portfolio stood out among the more than 255,000 submissions—a record for the competition—because of his minimalist-style artwork that depicts scenes from personal experiences with amusement. In addition to earning a $10,000 scholarship, Zepeda will be honored at an awards ceremony in Carnegie Hall this month, and his artwork will be featured for two weeks at Parsons The New School for Design and the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York. In the growing world of “foodies,” a handful of international cities have emerged as undisputed gastronomy capitals, warranting longdistance travel anchored solely by the prospect of incredible eats. Case in point: Lima, Peru.

To say Lima’s food scene is great wouldn’t do it justice; it’s downright phenomenal. Given the diverse topographies and cultures of Peru— from the Andes to the desert to the Amazon— the cuisine is rife with unfamiliar, intriguing items such as paiche (the largest freshwater fish in South America), choclo (an extra-large kernel corn), camu camu (a small citrus fruit) and cocona (Amazon tomato), prepared as many ways as the rules of statistics allow. Lima chefs have capitalized on Peru’s natural bounties to create mind-blowing gastronomy, landing top global accolades for a number of the city’s kitchens.

A handful of restaurants are requisite on any foodie pilgrimage to Lima. At Central (central restaurante.com.pe/en), Chef Virgilio Martínez has transformed his childhood abode into an open-kitchen restaurant where indigenous ingredients merge on the plate as edible art. At Maido (maido.pe/en), Chef Mitsuharu Tsumura taps into Peru’s Japanese heritage, delivering the apex of Nikkei cuisine (a Peruvian-Japanese fusion). Maido’s 15-course degustation menu, called the “Nikkei Experience,” is pure foodie nirvana with dishes like Nikkei seabass ceviche and Nikkei thick ribs (slow cooked for two days with yellow pepper, soy and sake).

Paracas As far back as the 1940s, Paracas was branded the “Hamptons of Peru.” An earthquake devastated the region in 2007, but the legendary Hotel Paracas, A Luxury Collection Resort (libertador.com.pe/en) has since been rebuilt and reestablished its role in Peru high society.

Along Peru’s desert-like southern coast, Hotel Paracas is a self-contained world of sunshine, picture-perfect sunsets, seductive infinity pools and unadulterated pampering. Peruvians fly here via private jet on weekends for sun-kissed standing, posing and socializing.

Caribbean Beat Emilia Fanjul Pfeifler has always been sweet on the Dominican Republic. The daughter of sugar baron Pepe Fanjul, Emilia grew up spending time at Casa de Campo, the 7,000acre luxury resort owned by the Fanjul family, on the island. Her fond memories of the Dominican Republic continue even in adulthood, as she married in the tropical paradise at St. Stanislaus Church in Altos de Chavon.

Vibe: The people are happy and kind, and the culture is rich in tradition. It has a wonderful air of Old World, which I think is such a sweet escape from the fast-paced world we all live in. A perfect adjective would be “colorful.”

Porsche shakes up the supercar world with its missile-fast hybrid 918 Spyder

By Howard Walker Breathe. It’s easier said than done when your heart’s pounding like a jackhammer, adrenaline is coursing through your veins and your teeth are clenching like you’ve dropped a 10-pound bowling ball on your big toe.

It’s what happens when you dial up 7,000 rpm on the tach of Porsche’s new 918 Spyder hypercar and then step off the brake pedal, unleashing the slingshot effect of 887 wild horses on a car that weighs roughly the same as a Tupperware container.

This isn’t just acceleration; this is Luke Skywalker X-wing starfighter acceleration. Zero to 60 comes up in an unreal 2.5 seconds, and that kind of speed makes your eyes water.

It doesn’t stop there. Zero to 125 mph flashes up in a blistering 7.2 seconds. Zero to 186 mph in 23. Flat out: 211 mph.

Even more impressive is the fact that the 918 Spyder is a gas-electric 42

hybrid that averages 67 MPGe and can whir silently on zero-emission pure electric power for around 25 miles at speeds up to 93 mph.

This is Porsche’s latest and greatest technical tour de force, which breaks new ground with the sophistication and sheer brilliance of its technology.

At its core is the featherweight, naturally aspirated V-8 derived from the engine that powered Porsche’s vaulted RS Spyder endurance racer. Even without electric motors, it cranks out 608 horses from its 4.6 liters and is capable of revving to a mind-blowing 9,150 rpm. At the front and rear axles are electric motors that add another 285 hp and allow the 918 to perform as an all-wheel driver.

All this helps the Porsche deliver its blistering off-the-line thrust— beating out the McLaren P1 and Ferrari’s LaFerrari—and endowing the car with otherworldly handling on and off the track.

The coffee flows slowly and with care at Subculture Coffee, where owners Rodney Mayo and Sean Scott practice in-house roasting using direct- and fair-trade beans from countries like Guatemala and Ethiopia, respectively. To produce the most flavorful java, baristas employ a saturation process called slow pour, in which water is heated to 198 degrees, gently poured over grinds and filtered into a mug over the course of four to five minutes. The urban shop, decorated with a chalkboard wall and wooden cabinetry carved by Mayo, also offers free “coffee intelligence” classes to teach guests about cupping, the art of coffee tasting.

A Delicious Mix New England day Normally, having too many boat scallops cooks in the kitchen is a bad thing. But when it’s five diverse chefs whose distinct tastes each garner a shining moment on the same menu, the result is a harmonious presentation of creative dishes.

Chef Larry LaValley introduced the “collaborative kitchen” concept to 3800 Ocean at the Palm Beach Marriott Singer Island Beach Resort and Spa when he arrived as assistant general manager in December 2010. Under his helm, each chef submits a proposed menu, presents dishes and pitches ideas in a roundtable session. After three or four tastings, LaValley selects the final items for the menu.

“Every dish has a story,” says LaValley, who has worked at Chef Daniel Boulud’s Daniel restaurant in New York as well as for Dennis Max alum Chef Mark Militello.

The current menu, which runs through the summer, includes standouts like warm duck strudel confit ($15), featuring spinach, goat cheese and a flaky crust and sweetened with sour cherry. The filling winter truffle risotto ($32), with wild mushrooms, asparagus ribbons and parmesan Reggiano, has a distinct truffle flavor and is salted with crispy prosciutto. New Eng-

land day boat scallops ($38) are served atop a lobsterpotato hash with sweet bacon-onion jam and roasted tomato butter, while the sorbets ($3 per scoop) are made in house (the strawberry-basil flavor is divine) and the crème brûlée ($9) hides a sweet surprise of fresh strawberries.

It’s not all seafood, however; True’s beef brisket sandwich is a thing of beauty: slowroasted, freshly sliced, and served on a buttered Kaiser roll. This unusual spirit, which has been wildly popular with South American imbibers for centuries, is popping up all over America

Pisco, the national spirit of both Peru and Chile, is one of the fastestgrowing spirits categories in the United States. Exports of the liqueur from South America into this country have increased by as much as 80 percent annually in recent years. One leading brand, Pisco Portón, experienced a whopping increase of 166 percent in 2012. Yet despite those increases, it remains an enigma to many Americans.

The spirit is a clear brandy distilled from Muscat-based wine, with several differences between the Peruvian and Chilean versions. Some Chilean pisco is aged in barrels, which gives it an amber color reminiscent of Cognac. In Peru, the spirit is always made in copper pot stills, so it retains its freshness and crispness. Peruvian pisco is not diluted and is bottled at distillation strength. The Chilean version is mostly manufactured in large continuous stills and may be diluted with water prior to bottling.

On the surface, it may seem the two approaches add up to the difference between an artisan spirit and a massproduced one, although both countries claim to make the best. Despite the controversy, Peru and Chile are united in one aspect: the consumption of their national cock86

tail, the Pisco Sour. The cocktail was invented in a Lima bar in the early 1920s, yet the two countries have their own recipes. The Chilean version mixes pisco with ice, powdered sugar and the juice of a Pica lime (a small, highly acidic variety grown in a desert province). In Peru, bartenders combine pisco with lime juice, simple syrup, Angostura bitters and an egg white before shaking. The egg white adds smoothness and richness to the drink, both in terms of texture and taste. (As a side note: On an episode of No Reservations, Anthony Bourdain nearly created an international crisis when he said he preferred quaffing beer to drinking the Chilean Pisco Sour.)

In the United States, San Francisco has become the center of pisco consumption. The spirit first arrived in that city from Peru in the 1830s and was hugely popular by the time of the Gold Rush. San Francisco was also the home of another famous pisco cocktail, the Pisco Punch, invented by Duncan Nicol at the Bank Exchange and Billiard Saloon. Celebrated by writers such as Mark Twain and Rudyard Kipling, the Pisco Punch supposedly tasted like lemonade and had a wicked kick.

Unfortunately, Nicol’s bar closed with the advent of Prohibition in 1919, and his recipe died with him.

In addition to Portón, top Peruvian brands available in the United States include Barsol, Macchu Pisco, Gran Sierpe and Don Cesar Pisco Puro. One label attracting a great deal of attention is Encanto Pisco, described as “for bartenders, created by bartenders.” The brand is a collaboration among a distiller (Carlos Romero), a sommelier (Walter Moore) and a bartender (Duggan McDonnell).

“This all started because I couldn’t find a pisco that made a great cocktail,” McDonnell says. “Now, we market it one bartender at a time.

We’re looking for the person who’s exposed to artisan spirits and trends and wants to introduce those things to his or her customers.

The field of physical therapy is vast, offering many interventions to fit individual needs. Aquatic therapy, a faction of physical therapy, aims to promote rehabilitation and augment healing via exercises performed in water. Dana Van Pelt, a certified physical therapist at the Palm Beach Institute of Sports Medicine in Boca Raton, describes aquatic therapy as “a very low-stress, low-impact method of rehabilitation that allows [the patient] to achieve results without further injury.” Van Pelt provided PBI with some insight into the practice of aquatic therapy and the services offered at the institute. [The] ability to do high-intensity exercises in a low-impact environment, to see gait mechanics on video and to run/walk with resistance.

What is the aquatic therapy setting like at PBISM? We have a HydroWorx therapy pool that contains a variable speed treadmill, two resistive water jets and a massage jet.

What are some exercises used in aquatic therapy?

Wall pushes, flexion, forward and backward treadmill walking, singleleg balancing, hip extension and abduction, and step exercises.

Is aquatic therapy suitable for all age groups?

Yes, but there is a height requirement [of 4 feet, 10 inches].

Introduced in the 1940s by Stanley Burroughs, this cleanse is designed to promote weight loss and relieve symptoms of chronic conditions. For breakfast and dinner, participants drink a shake and a series of supplements; lunch consists of an approved meal made from ingredients like fish, vegetables and greens as well as supplements. These cleanses, which vary in length from a day to a week, substitute meals for raw juices filled with nutrients from fresh vegetables like kale, carrots and beets. While creating homemade juice is an option, there are also a number of local juice producers in the area offering cleanse programs, including Christopher’s Kitchen in Palm Beach Gardens, Bee Organics in West Palm Beach and OnJuice in Boca Raton, an online-based company that delivers juice to your door.

From June 12 to July 13, the eyes of soccer fans worldwide will be on Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Teams from 32 countries will compete within eight groups of four, with two from each moving on to further competition, culminating in the final match and the crowning of a new world champion. The tournament takes place every four years, and Spain took home the most recent title, in 2010, but this year teams from the United States, Germany and host country Brazil will surely put up fights. We asked Kos Donev, the head coach of Florida Atlantic University’s men’s soccer team, for his insight and predictions for the tournament. (fifa.com) PBI: Who are the key players to watch on the U.S. team?

Donev: [Landon] Donovan and [Clint] Dempsey. They are both the team’s most experienced players who have played with the national team and abroad.

What are the strengths of the U.S. team?

It has players who have international experience, and the coach, Jürgen Klinsmann, has also played and coached at the international level.

What are the team’s weaknesses?

As usual, its weakness will be attacking and scoring. USA does not yet have the world-level attacking players to perform at this level.

[Without this] attacking power, eventually they will break defensively.

Who do you favor to win the 2014 World Cup? I feel that the Germans have the best chance to win the 2014 World Cup because their players [are] able to play a possession type of game and can also effectively play longer ball with counterattacking. Their players are not only as technical as the Spanish and the Brazilians but are also physically strong/tall, which gives them an advantage defending and attacking in the air.

Chill in refrigerator for several hours before frosting.

Raised in a retail-industry family, Lisa Todd Shapiro started working in fashion at age 8, helping take inventory. Years later, she would open her own Lisa Todd boutique in Coral Gables, followed by a second location in Boca Raton in 1992.

The plus-size specialty store has always featured Shapiro’s private label, which she expanded six years ago. Today, Lisa Todd Now is carried in more than 150 stores in the United States and Canada, including Neiman Marcus.
