The Holiday Spirit hile I’ve always admired people who can finish their holiday shopping early, I have to admit there’s something exhilarating about the last-minute rush to the stores. Although I try not to wait to do my own shopping, the calendar has a way of sneaking up on people.

That’s part of the fun of the holidays, though. The mad dash to crowded malls and busy local retailers isn’t such a treat in itself, but there is a certain pleasure in knowing we’re all in it together. There aren’t many common experiences that unite us anymore in this diverse and busy world, but holiday shopping is one of them. Almost everyone has a story to tell.

By the end of this month, we’ll probably have more stories to share. According to a survey conducted in October by Harrison Group for American Express, spending by affluent consumers on holiday gifts this year is projected to grow by 4 percent. If that means Worth Avenue and The Gardens Mall are just a little bit busier, so much the better. It’s good for our community.

And, really, our community is what defines us. The place we call home—our family, our friends, our activities—is worth celebrating, especially during the festive season. For some of us, Florida may be just one of several places we choose to live, but it is distinctly ours. It might not offer the holiday traditions we grew up with elsewhere—we lean more toward boat rides than sleigh rides, and we favor chilled Champagne over mulled cider—but the new traditions we have developed here are just as important.

Over the past few years, I have noticed a growing desire expressed by our readers for simple pleasures—spending time with the people they care about most and relishing their private celebrations and shared moments—without regard to geography. Home is where the heart is, as the saying goes, and though we still love to travel, shop and throw parties, we seem to be more focused than ever on the genuine, meaningful occasions that help us create lasting holiday memories. This, too, is becoming an increasingly common touchstone, and a good one at that.

Now, as we look forward to the cherished moments that await us during this year’s holiday season, it’s heartwarming to remind ourselves of what we share with others in our unique circumstances—our own tight-knit community, if you will. Here at Palm Beach Illustrated, with our own “family” of talented staff members, readers and valuable advertising partners, we appreciate being a part of this community more than ever by celebrating exceptional occasions and every aspect of the luxury lifestyle—the clothes we wear, the events we attend, the places we travel, the way we decorate our homes—all year round.

A Magical Time s the song says, December is the most wonderful time of the year. Even in the heat of South Florida, there is something magical about the holidays.

To be sure, the festive decorations around town, the anticipation of gifts small or grand, and the endless sequence of parties add to the merry mood. But the true beauty of Christmas, Hanukkah and other December holidays is the spirit of love, sharing and togetherness they bring out in people. There is something so warming about sitting around the fire with close friends, or being surrounded by all the generations of family at the table, or taking the time to let the people who support us know how much we appreciate them.

That sentiment is echoed by Victoria Amory, our go-to authority on entertaining at home. For Victoria, Christmas is all about the fellowship among family and friends, and authentic generosity. This year, she is decorating her table in an understated, tasteful scheme of aubergine, silver and white, and presenting a menu that is at once sophisticated and comforting. Everyone decorates differently, of course, as is evident in “A Holiday Tradition,” on page 96. Loreen Farish is keeping up the tradition begun six years ago, when she and her husband, the late Joe Farish Jr., built their Jupiter Island home. The Farishes always went all-out for the holidays, decorating every nook and cranny of their house, and then inviting friends and acquaintances over to enjoy it. This year, the house will be decked out as always, and the parties will go on, just as Joe would have wanted. I can’t think of a better tribute for the man who played such a major role in shaping Palm Beach County’s history.

Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, I wish you the happiest—and most meaningful—of holidays.

Almost three decades after writing The Official Preppy Handbook, author Lisa Birnbach returns to the subject of everything preppy with True Prep (Knopf). The tome offers a new take on how to be preppy in the twenty-first century, including how to handle the Internet, reality TV and scandal. ■ TELL US ABOUT THE CREATION OF TRUE PREP. On and off, I’d think about it, but I was raising my children. I also hosted a [daily] radio show, I was a TV correspondent, I got divorced, I was sick. Things happen. Then one day, I met [book designer] Chip Kidd and he [suggested a collaboration.] The idea of doing it with a designer partner sounded very appealing.

■ WHICH SECTION OF THE BOOK IS YOUR FAVORITE? It does change from day to day, but I really love the timeline. It tells you a lot about the world. Not to compare myself to the great John Updike, but I really appreciate books where you get something in addition to what you thought. In Updike’s Rabbit books, you get an extraordinary history of the end of the twentieth century. As a bonus in True Prep, you also get a sense of modern cultural history.

■ WHO ELSE WAS INVOLVED WITH THE BOOK? My 17-year-old daughter wrote the section that offers advice to the Gossip Girl producers, and my 13-year-old provided us with the text messages.

Giuseppe Zanotti has a passion for shoes. Hailing from San Mauro Pascoli, in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, he grew up around the craft of shoe manufacturing, which was ubiquitous in his hometown.

He chose a different path at first—he was a DJ and zealous consumer of both music and the night scene—but his eye for design eventually claimed his interest. A self-proclaimed adorer of women’s feet, he concentrated on creating shoes that turned heads and made women feel sexy and confident. His rise was meteoric, and now Zanotti is counted among the world’s top shoe designers, creating masterpieces for both the red carpet and the street. He spoke with PBI during a recent appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue, Boca Raton.

PBI: Why shoes?

ZANOTTI: Why not? (laughs) When I see women’s feet, I can imagine how to cover and discover. When I started in the ’80s, I wanted to create sexy, very feminine shoes for women. I like femininity and sex appeal, but not in a vulgar way. [Zanotti shoes] have that balance.

My father was an artisan for ice cream, but my mother was a tailor. The ladies would come to our house to try the clothing, and I remember seeing this pair of pointy pumps in pearl gray with a thin heel that I thought was so sexy.

That one pump was a universe for me. It sparked something.

Where do you get the inspiration for things like that?

How high is too high?

During winter, on the beach in Romagna there are a lot of fish. I was in this restaurant and ordered fish, and I looked at the fish bone and thought it would be nice to do a sandal. So I sketched it on a napkin. That’s how I design shoes: organically. I never know when inspiration comes.

When you do something that’s dangerous, it’s better [not to] do. We do four and a half, five inches. I cannot do something more.

What do you consider your most outra-

What is the perfect shoe?

When a woman feels [beautiful] in the shoes, when they fit well, when they are sexy but not so much … For myself, I’m never satisfied. [Perfection] is an illusion.

There is something about the lights along Regent Street, the creatively dressed store windows, the magical displays at the 250-year-old toy shop Hamleys and the carolers at Trafalgar Square that ignite the Christmas spirit in even the most curmudgeonly Scrooge.

The warmth of the season, if not the weather, begs for a stay that feels more residential.

This is when we like to check into London’s more intimate properties, the ones that feel like private clubs or gracious homes, with true personal attention and a house party atmosphere. The hotel 41—so named for its address, 41 Buckingham Palace Road—is high on that list. With only 30 rooms, each decorated in black and white but no two alike, and a clubby lounge that sits beneath a glass roof, the place feels like a secret hideaway for those who cherish privacy.

At first, 41 looks like a typical old-world London club. You take the elevator to the fifth floor, over which the entire hotel is spread, and come to a lounge with all the requisite elements—the button-tufted leather club chairs, the woodpaneled library, the fireplace—that give an immediate sense of place. But then you wander about and raise an eyebrow at an original Matisse (the hotel has quite a collection of original art), the candles floating in your personal bathtub and the riot of black-and-white patterns brought together in an eclectic but chic way.

And then there’s the service. The staff-toguest ratio is two to one, and it shows. The staff 70

here act more like personal attendants, and they stand ready to serve—a classically English trait. It is not unusual to have a member of staff prepare a child-friendly picnic prior to a family outing, or serve Champagne just because, or draw a romantic bath at turndown—all without being asked. The service is so intuitive that it truly makes the entire experience.

For Christmas, 41 is trimmed with all the holiday finery and entices guests with its twonight “Magical London” package, which even includes Christmas trees in the suites and stuffed stockings for those in residence during Christmas Eve. One of the pleasures during the festive season is taking cocktails and canapés in front of the fire, or enjoying a late-night

hot chocolate and lavish snack in the lounge.

A unique element at 41 is its nightly spread of nibbles and drinks, and its invitation to “plunder the pantry” anytime the desire arises. It’s one of many reasons the place feels like a home away from home.

During the Christmas season, that magical time of year when children and adults are giddy with excitement, every dinner at home, even a simple family gathering, has a feeling of festivity. I adore the season with its pomp, traditions, enchantment and anticipation.

Christmas really is not just one day; it spans for two weeks. Think about it; during this period we have plenty of reasons to celebrate with all sorts of feasts and traditions, from casual New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hangover breakfasts to sophisticated gala dinners. There is something for everyone, and everyone has something.

glasses and tasting simply elegant food in the company of good friends and family.

That, to me, is the key of entertaining at home: the simple elegance of things well done, without the pretense of over-thetop expenditure. Entertaining is about being generous, open armed and welcoming. This is the season to share the best of what we have.

This year, my new color is purple. Yes, purple. I had some kilim carpets made in Turkey for the living room in a deep aubergine color. The purple carpets are paired with white and pale gray fabrics in furniture and curtains, creating a calming

palette but with a bit of a kick. I like to think of this combination as the millennium colors, like the avocado green of the ’60s and the neon pinks of the ’70s. I hope it works for many years to come.

The table is set following those same colors—purple, white and silver—with crystal. It is truly decadent and rich looking: a bit regal, totally sensual and really smart.

A few pieces of silver herald the season with a whimsical touch. The flicker of candlelight makes our eyes sparkle and our complexions glow.

The party begins with Bellini, the famous white-peach and Champagne drink invented by the Cipriani in Venice.

This cocktail, if you can call it that, is pure ambrosia and immediately sets the tone for a special dinner. To nibble with drinks, roasted spiced pecans add a touch of flavor and crunch. I adore how these nuts taste with everything from soups to salads and even roasted fruits; I keep a big batch in my pantry. I have also made the same recipe using walnuts with amazing results.

Dinner starts with white winter soup that is as smooth as vichyssoise and as delicious as all the vegetables in it.

I love serving this soup with garnishes like diced tomatoes, croutons, scallions and crabmeat, or simply grilled shrimp. It really allows for a myriad of accompaniments, or none at all. Make it ahead of time and reheat it gently for flavors to develop even further.

For the main course I am serving two of my favorite winter dishes, scallops with Champagne and risotto with Champagne—can you guess the thread here? Grilled asparagus adds the necessary color and goodness to the main course. The scallops are first seared at high heat and then, after the sauce is done, reheated in the creamy Champagne mixture. Totally delicious. The risotto simply is made using broth and Champagne and stirred until creamy. A bit of Parmesan is fine, but not too much, as you don’t want to overwhelm it with strong flavors.

Use any Champagne, Cava or Prosecco you like, but keep the Cristal for drinking.

A green salad, dressed with Champagne vinaigrette and served with goat cheese on toast, follows the main course. These tart and sharp flavors are ideal to end the savory courses and clean the palate for dessert. I love to

linger at the table and savor flavors, sip wine and reminisce; this is the time.

Torta de Santiago is a flourless cake that was traditionally made by the pilgrims during the peregrination to Santiago de Compostela. Instead of flour, it is made with finely ground almonds, eggs and lemon for a sensational collection of flavors. I love it as is but you can always serve it Ă la mode with pecan ice cream.

With coffee and tea, I am serving mini mincemeat tarts. These are vestiges of my British education and one of the many epicurean traditions I have kept. Brandy butter or even whipped cream with a touch of brandy is a perfect garnish.

Making traditions and creating memories is how I think of these festivities. All of them have an ancient reason for being, and nothing cheers our spirits and lifts our moods better than a midwinter festival. It is, after all, what it is all about: the celebration of being together with family and friends. u

A holiday tradition

With a house full of memories and friends, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year for Loreen Farish.

When Loreen Farish was a young girl living in Philadelphia, her fondest memories of the holiday season were when both sets of grandparents presented her with lots and lots of Christmas gifts. Although she loved receiving the beautifully wrapped presents, she would keep one present from each set and give the rest to area orphanages.

“I was the only grandchild so everyone wanted to lavish me with gifts,” she recalls.

“But I learned early on that Christmas is the time to give to others. So I would pick the one gift I wanted the most and give everything else away to children who needed to feel love during the holidays.”

That spirit of giving has been an asset to area organizations like the West Palm Beach Rotary Club and the Maltz Jupiter Theatre. For the past six years, Loreen and her well-known attorney husband Joe Farish Jr., who passed away in September, hosted a pair of holiday fundraisers in their 10,000-square-foot Jupiter Island home. Shortly before Joe’s death, the Farishes talked with Palm Beach Illustrated about what the holiday season means to them.

“We built our home to be a fantastic party house, and for Christmas we decorate every single room, shower stall and loggia,” Joe said. Construction of the two-and-a-half-acre oceanfront home was completed in 2003. “We have no fireplaces because we want it open.

Christmas is a happy time of the year, and everyone is in a good mood.”

This year, the party for the Maltz, an 800-seat theater where Joe was a board member, will be held December 3. The following night, there is a gala for the Rotary, where the lawyer was active for 64 years. The exclusive events attract nearly 200 people each and raise about $60,000 for the Palm Beach County organizations.

For 64 years, Joe defended and divorced an array of Palm Beach denizens with such names as Ford, Firestone, Dodge, Wakeman, Kimberly and Pulitzer. Since he knew so many people, both professionally and socially, Joe and Loreen loved bringing a wide variety of personalities to their holiday-decorated home.

Joe believed these annual parties gave guests a chance to talk one on one with friends old and new. “Sometimes in Florida, there isn’t the

sense of camaraderie and warm and huggy holiday seasons like Loreen and I had while growing up,” Joe said. “The December holidays are for families and friends, so we encourage our guests to walk around the house, talk to people, then go into each room and enjoy the decorations.”

Indeed, the Farishes, “supervised” by Maya, their 12-year-old orange tabby cat, went all out with their Christmas decor. Each year, Loreen created an elaborate mix of purple and red, jet black and gold, red ostrich and gold leaf, silk, satin, damask, crystal and sparkle. Think of Gone with the Wind, “Dynasty” and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, all wrapped up with holiday sparklers and a royal red bow.

Loreen has been collecting holiday ornaments and eclectic decorations all of her life. A few of her favorite things include an 1865 Santa Claus, 85-year-old Mercury glass, Dresden figurines from Joe’s stint in World War II, a carousel rabbit dressed in Santa Claus finery, 12 Neiman Marcus Santas, more than two dozen fantasy Christmas trees, and a stuffed red stag Joe shot in Scotland, which wears 14 Santa hats on its antlers during the holidays.

She keeps most everything stored in boxes under beds and in the attic, looking forward to fall so she can begin her decorating routine. Each October, she grabs her friend and helper Pam 98

Richardson, and the women spend two months creating a fantasy Christmas by decorating every inch of the two-story, four-bedroom, eight-bath home, including the pool, spa and gazebo areas.

“I just love stuff,” laughs Loreen, who starts the decorating process by stringing the yard lights. “I spend days and days just putting everything out and arranging where it will go. I display Santas, wreaths and poinsettias in every room. I find mermaids, glass owls, golfing Santas with AstroTurf trees and all kinds of good luck Christmas charms. I thoroughly enjoy the glitz and fantasy of it all.”

She likes to showcase her collections everywhere, including the bathrooms, hallways and patios. In addition to the open living room, which is dominated by a 22-foot Christmas tree, the kitchen and powder room are great showstoppers for the parties.

A mural of Neptune covers the kitchen wall, weaving an aquatic theme that includes ocean views, a frosted glass clamshell chandelier suspended by three chains and a 250-gallon saltwater aquarium. The powder room is solid black with red wreaths, a whimsical mural of Maya in a turban and Santa wearing a red velvet hat.

For much of the holiday season, and on most weekends yearround, if they were not traveling to favorite spots like Italy or New Orleans, or hanging out in their skybox at Miami Dolphins home games, the Farishes drove to their Indiantown ranch on the Okeechobee Waterway.

“We share a passion for our ranch,” Joe said. “We feed bread to the peacocks, fatten the cows and cut carrots for the nine mini donkeys. Then we barbecue chicken and ribs for ourselves.”

Over the years, the couple spent many New Year’s Eve holidays at The Ritz-Carlton in Naples. But when the moon was bright on Jupiter Island, they preferred to stay home and drink in the ocean view, which goes on for miles.

“We loved Jupiter Island, especially during the holidays,” says Loreen. “We filled our home with furniture, antiques and memories of our travels and families, as well as new things we had bought together. The December holidays in California’s wine country are a glittering gift of wine and food. Vineyard tours, tastings, award-winning chefs’ cuisine, gorgeous countryside, Golden State-style shopping—there are many reasons to be merry.

Hillside Haven Eighty-five cottages, suites and lodges settle into the hills above the valley that is home to the Meadowood Napa Valley. It serves as a luxurious base for Napa Valley excursions, although it does offer many compelling reasons to stay put.

There’s an old tradition that whatever you eat and drink on New Year’s Eve will determine your fortunes in the year to come. There’s no evidence to back this up, of course, but it does present a compelling case for popping open your best bottle as the clock strikes midnight.

Connoisseurs of Champagne are constantly revisiting the vintage vs. nonvintage debate.

Many think that vintage is better, since the grapes come from a year that was supposedly good enough to stand on its own. There’s another theory that nonvintage Champagne ac-

tually tends to be superior, since the blend of many different years makes a more complex and interesting wine. Currently, it’s possible to find vintage Champagne from 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002 in the marketplace, with insiders giving the nod to 1996 and 1998.

When it comes to the luxury cuvées, however, no such argument exists. These are the top expressions of a Champagne house, produced from the finest grapes in the best possible years. They are expensive, made in small quantities and sometimes hard to find.

Here are my picks for that special bottle to start the year off on the right foot: ❉ Pommery Cuvée Louise 1998 ($150) and Rosé 1999 ($180) The regular cuvée is luscious and complex, with flavors of minerals, citrus and crushed hazelnuts. The rosé is virtually perfect—intense and persistent, with a haunting red berry essence. ❉ Perrier-Jouët Fleur de Champagne 2002 ($175) and Rosé ($275) The regular bottling is rich and profound, displaying great depth of flavor in its layers of brioche, vanilla and toast.

The rosé is even better, highlighted by flavors of strawberry, raspberry and hints of roses. ❉ Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes d’Or 1998 ($125) Full-bodied and powerful, with flavors of melon, stewed peaches, crème brûlée and allspice. It blossoms with food, gaining depth and amplitude, and can pair well with a wide range of both continental and Asian dishes. ❉ Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires 1995 ($180) This blanc de blancs (made entirely from Chardonnay) is rich yet refreshing, with beautifully penetrating acidity and layers of lemon, custard apple and ripe melon. Balanced, elegant and seductive, it’s everything you want a Champagne to be.

palate v pour ❉ Krug Grande Cuvée ($150) Connoisseurs may pay stratospheric prices for their Clos de Mesnil and Clos d’Ambonnay bottling, but Grande Cuvée is the cornerstone of the house of Krug. Referred to as “multi-vintage” rather than nonvintage, it contains Champagne from as many as 10 or 12 vintage years, fermented in small oak casks before undergoing the second fermentation in the bottle. The result is an intense, zesty style best suited to accompany main dishes of fowl or game.

My Champagne of the year? Unquestionably, it was the Dom Pérignon Rosé. The 2000 ($400) has a pale salmon color and a yeasty nose with hints of red fruits. It is fullbodied and elegant in the mouth, with expansive flavors of wild strawberry and red raspberry. The most remarkable aspect of the wine is its long, haunting finish.

As good as it is, the 2000 pales next to the 1990 Œnothèque Rosé ($900), a rerelease disgorged prior to entering the market this past fall. It has an amazing nose with whiffs of pastry dough, candied red berries, mushroom and truffle. It is intense and complex on the palate, with unfolding layers of rhubarb and red fruits and a finish that seems almost endless. ◆

TINY SPACE, BIG TASTE

The name says it all on the size, but the menu at Six Tables is full of delicious surprises.

Six Tables is the brainchild of Roland Levi, a classically trained chef from Belgium. Along with his wife, Gail, Levi started his first restaurant in Dunedin in 1998.

Jonathan Fyhrie, Gail’s cousin, who had spent most of his culinary career working in ski resorts in Colorado, opened a fourth location, in Boca Raton, in 2004.

The restaurant concept is simple: a fivecourse, prix-fixe menu; intimate surroundings; a mix of classic haute cuisine and European comfort food. The Boca Raton location easily can be described as charming. For starters, the small room really has only six tables, with a maximum capacity of 24 customers. Tastefully decorated in burgundy and cream, it gives the impression of dining in a well-appointed private home.

This is the place for a romantic evening or a quiet, peaceful dinner. The tables are set with Limoges china and elegant flatware, illuminated by candles and the soft light of wall sconces. They are spaced far enough apart for privacy, although a full room can certainly turn into one big happy family.

Diners are greeted with a glass of French sparkling wine to help them settle in. This is followed by a choice of soups. Traditional lobster bisque is rich and spicy, packed with chunks of lobster. A tomato basil soup (the vegetable purée of the day, 120 PALM BEACH ILLUSTRATED

which often changes) is dense and satisfying, studded with fresh tomatoes and flecks of basil, and enhanced by a touch of cream. An offbeat version of a Caesar salad follows—organic romaine garnished with heirloom tomatoes, capers and slices of radish, sprinkled with grated Parmesan.

Four or five entrée choices are offered, including an outstanding roast duck. The moist and tender meat is offset by crisp skin, and accented by a black cherry sauce spiked with brandy. Salmon is the seafood choice on a recent evening. Wrapped in phyllo pastry, the fish is cooked to a perfect medium-rare, drizzled with a reduction of fresh blueberries that has been augmented with balsamic vinegar.

Next is the cheese course. Served on an individual plate, artisan cheeses are ac-

palate v taste companied by sliced pears and a thick fig cake, a perfect trio of texture.

The two desserts are totally different in style and execution. A flourless chocolate cake, really a fudge brownie in disguise, is covered with crème anglaise. At the other end of the spectrum, Key lime panna cotta is light, fluffy and refreshing.

Orchestrating the service is Fyhrie. Polite, gracious and unflappable, he greets diners on arrival, explains the menu concept, and guides them through the experience. He is assisted by support staff on busy evenings, but he is the reason that this concept succeeds as well as it does, and he gives the feeling that he is hosting you in his own dining room.

The short wine list is limited to about two dozen selections, equally divided between whites and reds. Primarily from California, they are well chosen and noncommercial. A bottle of Riff Pinot Grigio

($30) is a clean, crisp accompaniment to the menu.

The prix fixe at Six Tables is $65, which is reasonable considering the quality of the food and the value received. Reservations are essential; companies, groups and families can book the room as a private venue with a minimum of 12 people. It’s one of the rare dining experiences where you leave with a feeling of peace and well-being you didn’t have when you arrived. ◆

Northern Italy has found a home in Jupiter in the form of Casa Mia Trattoria & Pizzeria. The restaurant opened in September, and is already gaining a following by serving delicious authentic dishes at moderate prices.

Owners Roberto Cavaliere and Stefano Paggetti have several years of restaurant experience between them. Cavaliere most recently owned Ocean Grill in Palm Beach Gardens, while Paggetti worked with Jetty’s in Jupiter and Galaxy Grille in Palm Beach. They have put the kitchen in the hands of Executive Chef Isidoro Giorsetti, who is from Italy, and Sous/Pizza Chef Jeremia Coppola. Together, the pair is turning out homemade delights, including gnocchi with Gorgonzola and white truffle oil, pappardelle with braised wild boar ragout, and veal scaloppini sautéed in a Pinot Grigio, caper and lemon sauce.

Pizzas are made in the wood-burning oven Cavalier and Paggetti had brought over from Italy. Crusts are thin and crisp, and toppings run from the traditional Margherita with basil, tomato and mozzarella, to the Contadina, which has tomato, mozzarella, eggplant, sausage and Gorgonzola. WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? A new restaurant is opening in December in Palm Beach, and the owners are hoping it will soon be the new default place for locals and visitors alike. Palm Beacher Piper Quinn, Chef Clay Conley and restaurant industry veteran Sam Slattery are launching Buccan, which is slated to open on South County Road in the former home of Beach House Bistro.

Conley, who spent the past five years as the chef at Azul in Miami’s Mandarin Oriental, is known for his Mediterranean style of cooking, but this menu will have international influences from his travels to places like Japan, India and South America.

Signature dishes include lamb shank bastilla, Japanese hamachi tiradito and brick oven-roasted paella.

Guests can expect to enjoy small plate presentations, so they can taste a wide variety of flavors, as well as some entrées. Buccan will have an open kitchen with a wood-fired oven and grill, an homage to its name, which is a South American term for a wooden framework on which meat is roasted or smoked over a fire. Feld has collaborated with Center for Elephant Conservation to bring awareness to the plight of the endangered Asian elephant, so the exhibition will feature elephant photos and artifacts, including an elephant headpiece, a life-sized casting of an elephant’s foot and teeth, and a “bull tub” (an elephant footstool).
