ntil the late 1890s and early 1900s, southern Florida was a place few people wanted to call home.

While there were pockets of civilization, it essentially was remote and uninhabitable to all but the heartiest of souls. It certainly was not the desirable tropical region we know today.

Two major industrialists, however, imagined this state could be something other than muggy, buggy swampland. On the east coast, Henry Flagler purchased short-line railroads and extended tracks south to Palm Beach and Miami, building hotels and communities along the way. On the west coast, Henry Plant, in competition with Flagler, plucked railroads from bankruptcy and ran lines from Savannah to Tampa, ultimately fostering growth south to Naples.

Though many people played key roles in Florida’s development, Flagler and Plant frequently are credited as the visionaries most responsible for opening the state to tourism and population. They saw a business opportunity and acted upon it.

I think we’re ready for some new visionaries to emerge.

Our state, of course, is nothing like the rural outpost it was more than a century ago, but I sometimes get a sense that many of us are bogged down in our own mental swampland, waiting for some kind of celestial sign that it’s okay to innovate and create again after a period of economic uncertainty. What I fear is that, by the time we all feel safe enough to step out of our comfort zones, we’ll have missed prime opportunities to be most effective in the areas we know best—business, culture, education, development, medicine or some other discipline.

When Flagler and Plant were doing their thing, the U.S. economy had slowed down after decades of significant growth. But they didn’t sit back and ride it out—they raced each other to get here. Today, both men have buildings and museums and cities and counties named after them, because they moved forward while others simply watched.

Florida’s growth these days seems to be measured primarily in terms of accommodating what already exists—highway-widening projects, new gated neighborhoods and shopping center renovations. To be sure, our communities need all of those things and more, but we can aim higher and do more than simply talk about the really bold ventures that could actually change them. We can develop and support good ideas with our leadership and our resources and be on the forefront of transformation—and enjoy the rewards that surely will follow.

This isn’t the forum to suggest any specific undertaking, but it’s safe to say we’re ready for any endeavor that elevates living in the Sunshine State now and in the future. Indeed, it’s the perfect time to embrace the spirit that led Flagler and Plant to the same conclusions in their day.

Whether your taste runs to minimalist-modern or old-world traditional, you won’t want to miss our “Show Rooms” feature, on page 58. For this 16-page showcase of interior design, we received hundreds of submissions by talented designers who work in the Palm Beach area. We chose the best of the best, some for their outright, jaw-dropping splendor, and others for their unique elements and fearless self-expression. The feature represents different genres of design spanning the spectrum from opulent to artfully pared down, offering an endless parade of decorating ideas.

More inspiration for the home can be found in our “Habitat” section, where we highlight a different space every month, as well as an idea page with “Elements” for the home. Check it out starting on page 97.

This month, we also visit golfer Mark Calcavecchia and wife Brenda at their home on the Loxahatchee River. Mark, who recently retired from the PGA Tour and now plays in the Champions Tour, with Brenda caddying at his side, wanted to build a home that was as suitable for private time as it was for entertaining groups of friends. The home they built accomplished both; all they had to do was decide whether to host guests for a cookout in the loggia or a friendly game in the bowling alley. Take the tour on page 74.

We also travel down to Boca Raton to visit the Kleier family at home. The Kleiers make up a high-powered real estate dynasty in Manhattan, and their influence extends here. The brokers, featured on HGTV’s Selling New York, have shown some Boca Raton properties on the popular show, casting a spotlight on Boca as a “des res” for New Yorkers. For their part, the Kleiers love their condo in Boca and use it as a family escape all winter. Turn to “All in the Family,” on page 80, for more.

v JACK NICKLAUS The name Jack Nicklaus is synonymous with the game of golf. The “Golden Bear” has captured 118 professional tournament victories and a record 18 professional major championship titles, and is one of only five players to win all four of golf’s majors.

He’s also helped design nearly 290 golf courses worldwide, including the redesign of the Champions golf course at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.

In 2005, Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, established the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, which has helped raise $15 million for pediatric health care services. The couple, who has lived in North Palm Beach since 1965, will host a charity dinner benefiting the foundation October 25 at Morton’s The Steakhouse in West Palm Beach.

n Tell me a basic golf tip every aspiring golfer should know.

I believe it is to know who you are, know your game, play within yourself, and only then can you improve. I don’t care if you’re a 2-handicapper or a 20-handicapper; if you learn that, you’ll be a better player. n What inspired you to focus on charity work supporting children’s health?

When our daughter Nan was about 11 months old, she was struggling to breathe. We took her to Columbus Children’s Hospital [in Ohio] and they had to use an adult bronchoscope to examine her. The doctors and staff were terrific, and we were able to witness just how their work can touch lives and even save lives. n What do you love about Palm Beach County?

It was the golf that originally brought me here in the mid1960s, but there are so many other things that have kept us here. There’s the wonderful weather; the casual nature of things; and while it’s not overcrowded, the population is large enough to provide that energy you want. Perhaps because so many well-known athletes and celebrities live here, when you go out, people respect your privacy. —Jennifer Pfaff

Ersilia Moreno is bringing olive oil to the masses. The Palm Beach Gardens resident has made it her mission to find the single best bottle from each of the more than 26 countries that produce olive oil—plus one from each of the 16 regions in Italy and three states in the U.S.—and sell them at farm stands in South Florida, New York and Connecticut. “[Olive Oil of the World] grew out of a hobby,” says Moreno, who in 2010 retired from a 20-year career in accounting to sell olive oil full-time.

Moreno spends the month of May traveling to olive groves, interviewing artisans, observing farming methods and touring production facilities. So far, she has collected 16 kinds of extra-virgin olive oil and picked up gourmet products along the way, including vinegars, flavored oils and jams. “The idea is to live in the art and with the art,” says Alex Vik, “to experience it rather than just observe it.”

We’re standing in the Sculpture, the remarkable public space of the Playa Vik hotel outside José Ignacio, Uruguay. The striking building contains a sliding wall of glass 55 feet wide, as well as a one-ton bronze door created by Uruguayan sculptor Pablo Atchugarry. The walls are lined with pieces from Alex and Carrie Vik’s extensive art collection; they change periodically as new objects are acquired.

Step outside the Sculpture, and you find yourself in a tranquil beach resort.

the semicircular beach of Playa Mansa. José Ignacio began as a fishing village, and from the deck it’s possible to watch small boats launch in the early morning and return in the late afternoon with their catch.

Playa Vik and its sister property, Estancia Vik, are not so much hotels as gracious private homes. At the Playa, six large casas surround the Sculpture in an L-shaped pavilion.

Each has a separate design theme, such as Mar (Sea), Raices (Roots) or Tierra (Earth), and all are liberally decorated with local art. Even though the hotel contains only 16 rooms, it does not lack luxury amenities, such as a fitness center and full-service spa. Service is personal and intuitive, and staff members always seem to materialize just when needed.

Inland at Estancia Vik, the setting is even more dramatic. Set in the middle of a 4,000acre estate, the Spanish-style colonial ranch features a sprawling living room with a billiard table, two large fireplaces and a centerpiece sculpture by Atchugarry. The Viks commissioned a different Uruguayan artist to design each of the 12 suites. Guests may read or relax in the peace of several interior courtyards, indulge in guided nature walks or take 42

one of the resident polo ponies out for a spin.

Not all of the art at the two hotels is visual. Marcelo Betancourt, the youthful chef who presides over both kitchens, went to cooking school in Uruguay and France. On the delicate end of his range, he’s capable of turning out an eight-course tasting menu, with the subtle flavors of each dish carefully paired to a different Uruguayan wine. On the more robust end of the spectrum, he’s a master of asado, the traditional mixed grill of the country, cooked over a huge fire pit in the barbecue room, featuring a seemingly endless procession of chorizo and blood sausage, beef, pork, sweetbreads and lamb.

Several hours south of Santiago, Chile, a totally different project is unfolding. In 2004, Alex Vik purchased a vineyard at Millahue, in the valley next to Casa Lapostolle’s Clos Apalta. Under the direction of Bordeaux native Patrick Valette, the winemaking team has planted 750 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Carménère and Syrah in dozens of individual

blocks. The goal is to produce a wine that is holistic, harmonious, balanced and seamless. A hotel is currently under construction along with a state-of-the-art winery.

Although the wine has not yet been released, we had the opportunity to taste the finished 2009 vintage, as well as a dozen separate components of the 2010 blend. They ranged from full-bodied, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon to rich, ripe Cabernet Franc, along with some remarkable Syrah that was mineral-infused and peppery. The vintage will spend 18 months aging in new French barrels. When the final blend is assembled, it promises to be an exceptional and memorable wine. (vikretreats.com, vik.cl) u

Mercedes-Benz delivers a second-generation CLS63 AMG four-door coupe with performance that will take your breath away.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and there’s no truer statement when it comes to automobiles.

One man’s, or woman’s, love affair with the blunt instrument look of, say, a Lamborghini is another’s gag reflex.

I have friends who salivate over Porsche’s four-door Panamera, likening it to a supermodel on wheels. Me? I think its rear end looks like a full diaper.

But one thing most car lovers I know agree on is that the original Mercedes-Benz CLS was one of the most gorgeous pieces of automotive art ever created.

When the silk was pulled off the production version back in 2004, jaws dropped, eyes popped, heads shook and thousands reached for their check book.

The CLS was a design sensation. It was the world’s first true four-door coupe, a melding of practical four-door sedan with swoopy-roofed two-door coupe. And what’s remarkable is that seven years on, the original CLS still looks as cool and classy today as it did back then.

Now there’s a second-generation CLS, and with it, Mercedes designers have traded a little beauty for a lot of brawn.

The new look is leaner, meaner and sportier. While that trademark arcing roofline is still there, the rest of its body now has more bulges than a linebacker, more body sculpting than Tony Little.

That front grille is much bigger and more upright than before, inspired by the front-end look of the new Mercedes SLS supercar. Over the rear wheels, the bulging rear wheel arch starts almost midway along the rear door.

And it’s as if Mercedes decided it was going to outdo Audi in the how-many-LED-lights-can-we-fit game.

In addition to premiering the world’s first bright-white LED headlamps, the CLS63 AMG offers 71 with various daytime running lights and turn signals.

Two versions of this new 2012 CLS are up for grabs: the $71,300 CLS550 and the mighty $94,900 CLS63 AMG, which we’re fortunate enough to be driving.

It’s a beast of a machine. Despite the “63” badge, the engine under the hood isn’t a 6.3-liter but a new 5.5-liter AMG-tuned V8, boosted by twin turbochargers to produce 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

But hand over an extra $7,300 for the optional AMG Performance Package and not only do you get a cool carbon fiber trunklid spoiler, AMG sport suspension and red brake calipers, but you also get an extra 32 horses and, more important, an additional 74 pound-feet of muscley torque. It’s the best seven-grand investment you could make.

What you essentially have here is a big bad wolf in big bad wolf’s clothing. Press the “start” button, pull the stubby shift lever directing the 7-speed automatic into “drive,” select Sport Plus mode, step on the throttle and … take a deep breath.

The acceleration off the line is instant, urgent, linear, breathtaking. Standstill to 60 mph takes, according to Benz, a mere 4.3 seconds, though one of the car mags recently timed it at 3.9 seconds.

That’s supercar territory.

And find a nice empty stretch of autobahn and you’ll see the speedo needle kissing the 186-mph marker. Cruising at 100 mph feels like 50 in most other cars.

Yet this isn’t some irresponsible gas-guzzler. This new 63 is 28 percent more economical than the previous model and capable of averaging 23 mpg on the highway, though 15 in the city isn’t going to save the planet.

Despite the Merc’s 4,122-pound bulk, it’s a featherweight through the curves. With fabulous new electromechanical, speed-sensitive steering, adaptive sports suspension and grippy 19-inch rubberware at each corner, you can throw it around like a go-kart.

Inside, as before, there’s seating for just four in tight-fitting bucket seats. And as before, that sloping roofline pretty much robs the rear seats of any headroom. That’s a little price to pay for a lot of style.

No, what this sensational new CLS63 AMG offers is art. Rolling art that rolls very quickly. Art that turns heads everywhere it goes.

And in my book, that makes it a masterpiece. u

ince Mark and Brenda Calcavecchia spend a great deal of time on the road with his current PGA Champions Tour, the golfers wanted to build a relaxing home that reflected their passion for entertaining friends.

“We built a nice house, which is perfect for throwing parties,” says Mark, now 51, who retired from the PGA Tour last year after three decades to join the Champions. “Very important to us is our large outdoor loggia so we can lounge around, and I can cook on the grill.”

With 13 victories during his PGA Tour days, including the 1989 British Open, Mark loves his new March to November Championship Tour season with Brenda acting as his caddy.

But the couple, who met in 2001 at Columbus, Ohio’s, PGA Memorial Tournament and married four years later in Lake Como, Italy, are excited at season’s end when they can come home to their Loxahatchee River compound. It includes the three-bedroom, six-bath main house with an 1,848-square-foot bowling alley, 45-foot-long saltwater pool and 590-square-foot guest house for family and friends.

When Mark was preparing to retire from the PGA Tour, he and Brenda talked about how they would spend their time when he wasn’t traveling as rigorously, or for as many tournaments. They wanted to round out their lives with other interests. So when they found the perfect riverfront location, they bought the lot, tore down the existing house and hired Casto Homes to build their dream from scratch.

In October 2009, after about a year of construction, the couple and their three dogs, Mollie, 3, Brutus, 6, and Ms. Ellie, 13, moved into the home they named Villa Nahar, the Hebrew word for river, to incorporate Brenda’s Jewish heritage into the mix.

“Three weeks later, we threw a housewarming party for 120 people,” recalls Brenda, 42. “Every year we have a December holiday party, and we usually entertain big during the PGA Honda Classic in late February. We truly enjoy the whole entertaining process.”

Brenda already is thinking of expanding her kitchen, which has a large island in the center made of weathered

black wood. Modern and neat, the bright room also features honed black granite countertops, a backsplash of green and red Moroccan clay tiles, an eight-burner Wolf stove, whimsical leopard upholstered chairs and a riot of pot racks.

She loves to cook, and reveals that Mark is an easy man to please in the food department. When he is not acting as the loggia’s grill master, she does the cooking. She makes fish, chicken, turkey, Italian dishes and meat loaf. She even freezes entrées to take with them when they travel on the road to golf tournaments.

For the Champion matches in April, the couple bought an RV so the dogs could come along and help the couple chill at night. Mark admits he can be “grouchy” on the links some days. But Brenda is both tough and calming and can handle her husband’s game as well as anyone.

“Mark can be crabby [on the course],” she reveals. “We don’t even speak on some holes. But he is easier on me than he would be on other [caddies], so I have little to complain about.”

As much as they love the game and seeing golfing buddies at the tournaments, Mark and Brenda look forward to the casual and easy lifestyle they have created at home. For example, they play golf together for fun at least three days a week, catch up on doctor and dentist appointments, then at night hang out on the loggia with the dogs, watching their 36-inch Sony wall TV. “We absolutely do not talk about golf at night,” Mark insists.

The home’s interior decor is a mix and match that can best be described as eclectic Mediterranean. “I designed the interiors to make the rooms comfortable and fun,” Brenda says. “We are very laid back.”

On the loggia, she placed a wooden door from a church in Tucson, Arizona that she painted in bright colors to hold towels they use around the swimming pool. A few feet away is a coffee table made from a wine barrel. She bought brass Moroccan lights online.

Their wood dining table, which seats a dozen, was custom crafted in Arizona.

Although they don’t use the bowling alley as often as the loggia, the sporting palace, aka The Lanes of Villa Nahar, is a vitally important

part of the house and another place to entertain friends. “Even though Mark grew up bowling and really loves the sport, it was my idea to put a bowling alley in our home,” explains Brenda.

“But when people ask us who is the best bowler, I have to admit that Mark is great.”

Brenda designed the bowling alley to look different from the rest of the decor by adding a little glitz. With a retro, Hollywood-deco feel, zebra chairs, wildly colored bowling balls and their collection of autographed movie posters gracing the walls, they struck gold with wit and whimsy.

“I love the bowling alley,” says Mark, who 78

honed his skills while his father was a bowling alley proprietor in Nebraska. “We will bowl 10-15 games for four days, then not use it for a month. But we keep it clean daily. And I have video games in there, plus my guitar, which I play frequently.”

At day’s end, the family heads for the master bedroom, crawling on two queen-sized beds pushed together to make a giant resting place.

“We share [the bed] with our dogs, since they sleep on top of me,” says Brenda with a laugh.

Overall, she says, “We are thrilled with the house. Everything about it is better than we had expected.” u

o the outside world, the Kleier family is a well-oiled business machine. Wife and husband Michele and Ian Kleier are the owners and co-presidents of Gumley Haft Kleier (GHK), a Manhattan residential brokerage firm launched in 1995. Their daughters, Samantha Kleier-Forbes and Sabrina Kleier-Morgenstern, are equally savvy and hold their own at the mom-and-pop firm as executive vice presidents.

In addition to operating the boutique real estate firm, the family is the face of HGTV’s Selling New York, a reality show about opulent residential properties now in its second season. There also is the newly released Hot Property (Harper Collins), a juicy roman à clef about Manhattan’s must-have residences and their owners, co-written by the female trio.

But spend five minutes—let alone several hours—with Michele, her immediate family and their cherished Malteses, and what emerges is a group with an incredible bond and respect for one another, who spends every possible minute together and even finishes one another’s sentences.

“I can count on [my family] for anything,” explains Michele, who is sitting next to her daughters on a bed, with her two grandchildren and dogs jumping on and off the mattress. “I always said I’d rather spend time with my family than anyone else because they are the most interesting and most fun to be around and, truthfully, the most enjoyable people I know.” “[Our husbands] knew that when they married us, it was a package deal,” adds Sabrina, who is married to Robert Morgenstern and has a son, Cooper. Samantha, who is married to John Forbes and has a son, Chase, welcomed their second child, Caroline, during the summer.

“We always wanted to work with Mom,” says Samantha.

“We started in the business when I was three and [Sabrina] was a newborn in a stroller. Mom didn’t have full-time help and didn’t want it. We joke that we learned the word ‘coop’ with the ABCs. She took us to every apartment showing.”

Both daughters stood on their own two feet before joining the family business. Samantha was a vice president at public relations company Susan Blond Inc. Sabrina had a career with Access Hollywood.

Now, just as their mom did with them, the girls are juggling motherhood and careers. “She came to every ballet recital, every football game. She was with us constantly. She challenged us.

She made us super. Nothing rattles her,” Sabrina says.

The Kleiers are enjoying a brief getaway weekend in Boca Raton, a city that often rivals Manhattan for their attention. They’ve been making yearly trips to Boca Raton for more than 25 years, at first staying at Boca Raton Resort & Club and then purchasing a condo so that the entire family, including their four-legged friends, could come as well. “Florida, we say in New York, is the sixth borough. We feel that it’s our other home,” says Michele.

With close ties to Boca Raton, it was only a matter of time before the Kleiers became involved with a local property. A relationship was formed with One Thousand Ocean (OTO), a sevenstory building affiliated with LXR Luxury Resorts and featured on Selling New York. Jamie Telchin, LXR’s president of development, remained in touch with the Kleiers until a strategical alliance between GHK and OTO was developed.

“Since they are not licensed to sell real estate in Florida, they are only able to help refer potential clients to us, as well as in-

troduce us to brokers and agents they know in New York,” explains Telchin. The agreement is common for Michele, who often accompanies her New York clients when buying out-of-state properties as a consultant.

Thus far, the property is 75 percent occupied. According to Michele, the market is relatively strong. “Prices in New York are currently aligned with those of 2006. I don’t know when they will be comparable to the prices of late 2007 and early 2008, but I have faith in the market. I wish I had a crystal ball.”

She does admit that New York has rebounded faster than South Florida because it’s a center of business, and housing is more of a priority than vacation homes.

Despite an overall bumpy economic time, the Kleier clan remains optimistic about the business and, of course, continues to be grounded and family-oriented. They are, after all, each other’s biggest fans and best friends. “I was lucky from the beginning,” says Michele, who moved from her hometown, Pittsburgh, to New York in the 1970s and never looked back. “I was close to my family as well, but we don’t live in the same city.”

“She would never forgive us if we did what she did to them and never came back,” says Samantha.

Let’s Make a Deal High-quality wines at affordable prices from California and the Pacific Northwest

In the current wine market, consumers expect two things at once: a deal and quality.

Both are possible, if you know where to look. Over the next few months, we’ll be surveying the world’s major wine regions and offering suggestions for distinctive wines that retail for $50 or less. Following are some recommendations for wines from California and the Pacific Northwest that deliver world-class value at a surprising price.

Beacon Hill Brut Rosé, Soter Vineyards ($50): Tony Soter, founder of Etude Wines (which was sold to Beringer), retired to Oregon, where he produces a handful of Pinot Noirs and this terrific sparkling wine. Composed of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it is bright and rich, remarkably deep and zesty. While hard to find, it compares favorably to some of the best grower Champagnes coming out of France.

Maximus, Bennett Lane ($28): Primarily Sauvignon Blanc, with about 10 percent Chardonnay added for richness and a splash of Muscat for raciness, Bennett Lane labels this blend White Feasting Wine. It displays excellent acidity, lush and layered fruit, and pairs well with dishes ranging from fish and shellfish to white meats.

Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, Sonoma-Cutrer ($25): This bottling from high-altitude vineyards usually is overlooked in favor of the more popular Russian River Ranches. Lean and focused with fine acidity, it reveals flavors of citrus, white peach and honeydew melon that lead to a peppery finish. Perfect with shellfish of all sorts, it’s especially a dream with oysters.

Lemelson Pinot Noir, Thea’s Vineyard ($30): Want a topnotch Oregon Pinot Noir at a reasonable price? This one is soft, rich and silky, a perfect crossover wine that goes well with a range of dishes from salmon and tuna to white meats and game.

Flowers Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast ($48): Walt and Joan Flowers planted vines on the high-altitude Sonoma Coast, in an exercise in “extreme winemaking.” Their entry-level Pinot Noir is bright and beautiful, filled with racy flavors of black cherries and dark berries.

Northstar Merlot, Columbia Valley ($40): Washington State Merlot is one of the best-kept secrets in America. This is a Merlot for Cabernet drinkers—firm and concentrated, with supple tannins and succulent black fruit, a joy to drink with grilled steak or lamb.

Black Chicken Zinfandel, Robert Biale ($40): In old Sonoma County slang, a black chicken was a special bottle of wine stashed in the barn and brought out for company or family celebrations.

Full-bodied and powerful, this spicy red wine can stand up to red meats and slow-cooked stews.

Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa ($35): Produced in the famous Oakville district, Turnbull’s neighbors are none other than PlumpJack, Far Niente, Dalla Valle and Groth. This large-scale yet supple Cabernet is a delight to drink on its own and a worthy companion to red meats.

Hidden Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa ($45): Located in the Mayacamas Mountains just over the Napa County line, Hidden Ridge is located at 2,400 feet and planted at an incline of 55 de-

grees—accessible only by helicopter, four-wheel drive vehicle or on foot. The result is a Cabernet that displays good balance and a terrific integration of fruit, tannins and oak.

If you take Dennis Max out of the picture, the history of South Florida restaurants looks very different. He introduced California cuisine to the area with the opening of Café Max in 1984 and pioneered true Italian cooking with Maxaluna Tuscan Grill in Boca Raton. Through several decades and nearly two dozen restaurant concepts, Max redefined our expectaion of what the dining experience was supposed to be.

His latest venture is Max’s Harvest, located in the burgeoning Pineapple Grove section of Delray Beach. The decor is sleek

and modern, with an industrial ceiling, slate floors, wood-topped tables and an open kitchen. The snug room seats perhaps 40 diners, with space for another 20 on the terrace and an intimate private room in the rear.

Be forewarned that tables are packed closely together and that there are many hard surfaces against which sound can reverberate— this space can be noisy when full.

Max’s Harvest bills itself as a “farm-tofork” restaurant, an establishment that uses small purveyors of fresh ingredients who are known to the house. This is less of a cliché than a mission statement: Those ingredients are carefully sourced and screamingly fresh, and they convey an intensity of flavor that makes one stop, pause and reflect on why others can’t do the same. The kitchen is in the competent hands of Chris Miracolo, veteran of many restaurants both here and in Dallas.

A starter of Broward County burrata ($15) is fresh and creamy, served with a Tuscan panzanella salad, peppery arugula and some wonderfully flavorful red and yellow heirloom tomatoes. Even better is crisp roasted asparagus ($10), accompanied by a sunnyside-up free-range egg, toasted ciabatta and a savory but not spicy piquillo romesco sauce.

flect the revolving bounty of land and sea.

South Carolina wreckfish ($29), a species resembling a cross between bass and grouper, is cooked a la plancha and perfectly delivered—moist, tender and sweet, placed on a bed of fava bean succotash enhanced with citrus butter. Don’t hesitate to order the prime dry-aged burger ($19), juicy and perfectly cooked, served on a brioche bun enhanced by a slice of tangy Tillamook cheddar and escorted by hand-cut fries.

The short wine list contains around 60 selections, almost entirely drawn from California and the Pacific Northwest.

There are several dozen well-chosen wines offered by the glass, along with a short but respectable list of craft beers.

Service is provided by a coed staff attired in jeans, starched blue shirts and bistro aprons.

Friendly and well-versed on the menu, they also are extremely attentive, checking back

with diners after each course is served. They will verbally describe the evening’s desserts; if the chocolate pot de crème ($8) is offered, pounce on it. The intense chocolate mousse is covered with fresh cherries and a cherry reduction, garnished with chocolate biscotti—an ideal way to conclude.

Max’s Harvest makes a fresh and interesting contribution to an area that some might think is already overloaded with restaurants. In truth, you can never have enough places like this one—this is a

neighborhood restaurant that should be in every neighborhood. u

Housed in the former home of III Forks, the 500-seat restaurant specializes in Beijing-style cuisine, with layers of light flavors in every dish. Q: What is your design inspiration?

A: We are inspired by the wardrobes and the architecture of the spaces we are given by our clients to re-create into gorgeous dressing room spaces.

Q: What are the latest trends in your industry?

A: Safe rooms, which are usually for jewelry collections within a dressing room space—a closet within a closet, essentially. Others include creating personal office space within a closet, rotating shoe and accessory storage to use smaller amounts of second-story height, computerized inventory systems, personal stylists, and architectural hardware (both proprietary and decorative) just for closets. We are working on our own line of closet hardware with Nanz for our clients.

Q: What is your area of specialization?

A: We are closet and dressing room space designers who also focus on other spaces, such as home spas, personal offices, large laundry rooms, wrapping rooms, crafting rooms and collection rooms (such as golf rooms, hobby rooms, trophy rooms, wine rooms and storage, smoking rooms, and gun rooms). We focus on the inventory and the geometry of the space to maximize the storage and create beautiful boutique-like displays for individuals’ wardrobes or other important possessions. We are also now dabbling in product design and launching our capsule collection of Clos-ette Too hangers and organization tools in Neiman Marcus mid October!

Florida Atlantic University adjunct professor Victoria Skinner relies on the sun to help her create works of art called cyanotype collages. She places translucent and opaque images on paper that has been treated with iron salts that react to ultraviolet rays.

The paper is then placed under glass and exposed to sunlight, turning a shade of cyan that can range from light to dark depending on factors such as cloud coverage and how long the paper is in the sun. Skinner then uses the paper, now called a cyanotype, as a canvas to glue a collage of images taken from photographs, magazines, books and more. “They’re pieces that don’t have anything to do with each other that I bring together,” she says.

Skinner is one of roughly 40 FAU professors whose work is on display in the university’s Biennial Art Faculty Exhibition, which runs through November 12.

The free exhibit fills two galleries with diverse works of art created by faculty from the Department of Visual Arts and Art History, the School of Architecture and the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies, including drawings, paintings, sculptures, ceramics, photography and video. fau.edu/galleries —Jennifer Pfaff

Mary Freitas is a true local.

She grew up in West Palm Beach, attended Rosarian Academy and worked for local radio and television stations (apropos, considering her grandfather was communications mogul Richard Fairbanks). Now, Mary lives in Palm Beach with husband Mark and sons Charles, 14, and Jack, 2, and devotes her time to charitable endeavors. This year, she is chairing the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s Jingle Bell Ball (December 16).
