This month, Palm Beach Illustrated debuts a daring new style. Certainly, the most obvious change is the wider page size, an adjustment many consumer magazines nationwide are making. With an added near-inch of space, we can present even more engaging content, while advertisers have extra room to showcase stunning images of their products and services to an exclusive audience. We’re also connecting with readers through our active Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest accounts. The integration of social media has enriched the magazine experience beyond what any of us thought just a couple of years ago.

The local economy is picking up steam, with commercial and residential developers adding new projects at a pace not seen since before the Great Recession. Harbourside Place in Jupiter, for instance, is coming out of the ground with a Wyndham Grand as well as a variety of restaurants and shops. Trader Joe’s is also getting in on the action, with three new stores planned for Palm Beach County in one year. This solidifies what we already know: Our area is poised for tremendous economic growth.

Supporting local businesses is important, especially during the slow season. That’s why September—a time when many Palm Beachers are still out of town—has turned into Restaurant Month in Palm Beach County thanks to Flavor Palm Beach, a month-long celebration of fantastic dining deals. If you are thinking there is something different about this issue of Palm Beach Illustrated, you are absolutely spot on.

Our magazine looks and feels different this month. For starters, we have adopted a new trim size that is almost an inch wider. That alone makes the fabulous images for which we’re known leap off the page. But there is much more to our new look. We also have redesigned our departments and features and have revamped our editorial mix to give you the most relevant, impactful and informative content.

As is evident in the pages of this issue, a redesign is a major undertaking. Ours has been a year in the making and has involved more volleying than a Wimbledon match. It began with a vision to not only update the aesthetic but to also tell a multiplatform story that marries print, digital and social content for an enhanced reading experience.

Let me explain. In the five years since we last redesigned the magazine, the world has changed.

Social media, then in its naissance, is now huge. Twitter has exploded, Pinterest has made its colorful entrance onto the scene and Instagram has changed the way we look at photos—all within a span of just a few years. Digital magazines and iPad editions have taken off, and the Web has become all-important in content delivery (and not just hard news).

In recognition of all this, we are celebrating our own digital and social platforms within our traditional print format. Throughout our pages, you will see lots of references to Pinterest boards, Facebook contests, Twitter hashtags, online videos and a wealth of extra content on palmbeachillustrated.com. That’s because we believe in synergy among all methods of delivering fresh, timely and creative content to our readers.

Finally, I’d like to call your attention to a few new pages I think you’ll enjoy. “Log On” (page 20) is a primer on the exclusive editorial found on palmbeachillustrated.com, which includes everything from a list of dockside dining haunts to how-to videos. In “Jet Set” (page 48), we ask local tastemakers to give us an insider’s take on a great destination where they often travel or have summer homes. The newly revamped “Taste” section (page 97) offers comprehensive content for the food-obsessed, including recipes for iconic dishes, Q&As with food and wine pros, mini reviews and restaurant listings.

Celebrate Labor Day with refreshing cocktails using fresh fruit purees and a Mason jar for an all-in-one shaker/tumbler.

2 oz. peach puree 2 oz. vodka 1 oz. raspberry simple syrup 4-5 raspberries 1 sprig rosemary Club soda In a Mason jar, muddle together berries and a few rosemary leaves. “Smile,” “Wonderful World”—these are my ways of looking at life. I always try to look at the positive side and the beauty. Nature to me is one of the most gorgeous things, so “Wonderful World” has so much beautiful imagery and is the kind of song I would love to sing to my kids and now my grandbaby.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice has to be from my grandma: “Success is not necessarily about money. It’s about being able to make a life you love and what you need to be sharing with the world.”

Can you share a memory you have from growing up in South Florida?

Off the field, Boldin was named the Ravens' Walter Payton Man of the Year, which honors a player for his charitable work. I set up programs in every city I’ve played in. There are a lot of people in need, and we just want to try to help as many as we can.

Are you glad to see Coach Bobby Bowden back at Doak Campbell Stadium this year?

It’s only right. I played under Coach Bowden and think he is a great coach, a great person. I don’t like the way he went out—the way that he was kind of booted out—and I think that it is only right to bring him back and recognize him.

rom the beginning of his interactive luncheon, Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s message was clear: “You think you know about sushi, but you don’t know anything,” he told his audience.

Morimoto’s demonstration at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone continued with a brief lesson on how to properly consume the dish. Japanese cuisine

The luncheon was one of many anticipated events at Flavor! Napa Valley, Northern California’s annual food and wine festival benefiting programs and scholarships at the CIA at Greystone. Each year, the celebration delivers an impressive array of Napa Valley and CIA alumni celebrity chefs, restaurateurs, vintners, sommeliers and artisan food producers offering demonstrations, tastings, dinners, lunches and one-of-a-kind experiences.

In 2012, food aficionados could observe the Forgione family chefs—father Larry and sons Bryan, Marc and Sean—cook a rib-eye steak to marbled perfection; listen to Chef Thomas Keller, who launched his remarkable career in Palm Beach, illustrate the importance of selecting fresh produce; discover Chef Christopher Kostow’s methods of harvesting and preserving vegetables; learn the art of making sushi alongside Morimoto; and witness an Iron Chef-style cooking competition between Chefs Michael Chiarello and Geoffrey Zakarian. Other featured master chefs included Scott Conant, Johnny Iuzzini, Jeffrey Jake, Charlie Palmer and Cindy Pawlcyn. Each culinary demonstra-

tion concluded with celebratory samplings or, in the case of Morimoto’s event, an astounding three-course meal with wine pairings.

At tastings, oenophiles gleaned valuable knowledge from some of the industry’s finest, including Jon Bonné, wine editor at the San Francisco Chronicle; Kerrin Laz, wine director at Dean & DeLuca; Rajat Parr, wine director of the Mina Group; and Andrea Robinson, the only woman ever named Best Sommelier in the United States. From blind tasting competitions to wine and cheese presentations, experts indulged festivalgoers in their best wine secrets and tips. (Hint: When in doubt, choose sparkling wine.)

The festival’s crown jewel, however, was the Appellation Trail, an exhilarating tasting trek featuring more than 100 wineries and 30 restaurants. Attendees explored Napa’s sub-appellations with a wine glass necklace, sampling everything from Albariño to Zinfandel.

Demonstrations and tastings were housed in the castle-like Greystone Cellars building at the CIA, and the historic setting was more than fitting. Founded in 1889, it was the largest stone winery in the world, and today it operates as one of the most prestigious culinary

Coupling it with the latest ZF eight-speed rapid-fire automatic enhances the driving experience to a level of satisfaction equivalent to devouring a pint of pistachio gelato in one go.

For the figure-hungry, acceleration from standstill to 60 mph takes a mere 4.2 seconds. Zero to 100 mph is covered in an equally rapido 10.5 seconds. The Maser won’t quit hurling itself towards the horizon until the speedo needle is kissing the 190 mph marker.

Despite the car’s extra length, it’s considerably lighter than before—to the tune of almost 200 pounds. Much of that is because of the use of aluminum for most of its body parts, though the main chassis structure is fine Italian steel.

On the road, these numbers add up to a bella macchina that drives as delectably as it looks. It’s a whopper of a car that somehow shrinks in size the harder you drive. Thankfully, the Maserati engineers resisted the temptation to follow the flock and switch to electric power steering and stuck with the more precise-feeling hydraulic set-up. It shows in the laser-like way the car handles curves.

And boy, is it quick. There’s an initial old-school hesitation

before the turbos spool up, but then the thrust comes on like an F-16 on takeoff. Powering past slower traffic or lunging out of a tight corner is breathtaking.

The only slight disappointment is the cabin. It’s gorgeous to look at, and I loved the simplicity of the dashboard layout with its two big dials and 8.4-inch touchscreen with simple Garminsourced navigation. But whereas the last generation Quattroporte was buttery soft, with slightly baggy leather and gorgeous detailing, this new version feels Teutonic—a little too cold and clinical for a Maserati. A small complaint for a car that defines the term bella macchina. «

And now look at you. You’ve gone through so many changes inside and out, we hardly recognize you. That lumbering exterior that was not so easy on the eyes suddenly is svelte, sleek and downright modern. You’ve got all new toys, too. We could spend all day watching the moray eel, the sharks, the barracudas and those spellbinding, whirling silver fish in your brand new aquarium. We’re suckers for animal sounds, so we can’t peel ourselves away from your Everglades gallery. And those lab coats in your cool new Conservation Station? Love ’em. Playing dress-up never grows old, you know.

You sure do clean up nicely. But in your heart, you’re still the same. You still love to entertain and challenge, playfully throwing out brainteasers that stump us and showing us how to make slimy goo.

A trip to the farm becomes a sumptuous experience when it includes a gourmet meal made with the very crops grown on the land.

Swank Farms introduced this concept four years ago, and its Swank Table luncheons, held four times a year, present an exclusive, refined look at the farm-fresh approach.

The Swank Table experience, which benefits a different charity at every luncheon, is both tasteful and educational. Upon arrival, guests receive a welcome bite and cocktail, then enjoy appetizer-and-wine pairings underneath a tent. They then tour the hydroponic farm in the shade house, getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the vegetables on the property are cultivated. Following entertainment—typically live music and a vendor presentation—the meal begins.

With seating for up to 162, the luncheons present as many as six courses using ingredients from the farm and organic meat and seafood. Different local notable chefs execute each luncheon, overseen by Chef Lindsay Autry of Sundy House.

This year’s Swank Table luncheons will take place January 12, February 9, March 9 and April 6. All run from noon to 4 p.m. except the last one, an en blanc twilight meal benefiting the Armory Art Center. A rural setting, the sunset and a farm-fresh dinner: What could be more perfect?

4. Toss in Olives in Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. 5. Marinate Tokyo Olives for seven months before adding to mixture. Taste often until appreciation for Japanese cuisine is fully developed.

6. Transfer ingredients to Bluezoo at Walt Disney World’s Swan and Dolphin Resort.

7. Stir in Azul Restaurant at Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami.

8. With backing by Piper Quinn, grind determination and open Buccan and Imoto, two of Palm Beach’s hottest small-plate restaurants.

Whether you are a vegan or a carnivore, you have to appreciate the power of living foods. Better skin, mental clarity, weight control, energy, disease prevention … the list goes on. Our vote for best raw/vegan restaurant in town goes to Christopher’s Kitchen. It’s a small, unassuming resto in Palm Beach Gardens’ Midtown, but it packs a wallop when it comes to both nutrition and taste. People make the trek from all over the county to partake of Christopher Slawson’s grain bowls, raw (but fishless) sushi, living juices and smoothies, and our personal favorite, CK Tacos with a yummy walnut taco “meat.”

For exciting action and unbeatable peoplewatching, Sunday polo is the place to be Nothing—and we mean nothing—says “Sunday Fun Day” better than polo. At International Polo Club Palm Beach, the 3 p.m. coin toss ushers in an afternoon of adrenalineriddled excitement and a robust social scene.

It must be said, the people-watching at polo is a sport in itself. For those into seeing and being seen, the always-soldout Champagne brunch is the place to dress the part and hang out. The food is good, the Veuve Clicquot is flowing and the energy is priceless. The view, however, is more focused on fashion expression and celeb spotting than on polo.

For enthusiasts of the actual sport (guilty!), we recommend the west side of the field. Whether you sit in a box,

at the Seventh Chukker members’ club, on the bleachers or on a blanket fieldside, you’ll have a winning view of the action during such dramatic matches as last season’s U.S. Open final, when the sport’s two most charismatic teams, Zacara and Valiente, went head to head for the big trophy.

This has been a great year for IPC, home to U.S. polo’s Triple Crown—the C.V. Whitney Cup, Gold Cup and U.S. Open. Club president John Wash received the Palm Beach County Sports Commission’s President’s Award, and IPC was honored with the CVB’s Providencia Award and the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Year Award.

The Palm Beach Food and Wine Festival, this year held December 13-17, is the foodie event of the season, presenting a buffet of culinary delights: Champagne receptions, exclusive gourmet dinners, food truck gatherings, meet-the-chef opportunities and a fiery cooking competition finale. The festival, which has grown in attendance and event offerings each year, now draws international participation from top talent like Sirio Maccioni, Todd English, Robert Irvine and Elizabeth Karmel. Best of all, funds raised at the event benefit a different charity each year, which makes every bite taste even better.

f it’s Friday night, you should be feeling right, as the song (sort of) goes. If you ask us, there’s no better place to watch the sun set on the work or school week than the deck of the Atlantic Bar and Grill at the Four Seasons. For the longest time, and to our infinite disappointment, that gem of a surfside dining venue was closed at night. Then a light bulb went off and the Four Seasons management decided to open it up on Friday nights for—insert drum roll here—clam bakes by the beach. Genius!

Now we can savor the sighs of the ocean waves as twinkling lights illuminate the sand dunes and island music plays in the background. The menu’s not so bad, either: New England clam chowder to start; a clam bake with the requisite lobster, bivalves and all the trimmings; and dessert in a mason jar. There’s only one seating a week, so reserve now for November.

It wouldn’t be summer without a little taste of the southern Med The classic summer romance is a brief and thrilling affair that lives on in memories long after it’s ended. For the past two seasons, we’ve had a returning infatuation with Boulud Sud, Daniel Boulud’s New York-based establishment that operates a summer outpost at Café Boulud. Palm Beachers first experienced Sud in 2012, when the menu was offered alongside Café Boulud’s. This summer, in addition to the main dining room, the pop-up menu has earned its own dining area on the tented, air-conditioned terrace. In this charming setting, Boulud Sud guests take a culinary tour of the Mediterranean, starting with cucumber gazpacho, stopping at octopus à la plancha and landing in mint-chocolate pavé heaven. No matter how busy the holiday season gets, we never miss the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens’ Festival of Trees. What we love most about it: including children in the festivities. It warms our hearts to watch the little faces beam during the light and sound show or the presentation of the themed trees. Which is why we were thrilled to learn of ANSG’s plans to create a children’s gala this year. On December 15, the kids will have their own garden adventure, enjoying cool activities like a poetry slam (this year’s theme is “the wonder of words”), a performance by the School of Rock, favors of air guitars and sunglasses, a photo booth and, of course, the light show they so adore. The grown-ups will still be able to enjoy opening night (December 6), this year sans kids.

hen she was 19, Angela Culveyhouse phoned her father and excitedly proclaimed, “Dad, I’m going to get married here one day.”

At the time, she was standing outside St. Nicholas Cathedral in Monte Carlo. It was a beautiful church, to be sure, but it also had a pedigree: It was the backdrop to the ultimate fairy-tale wedding—that of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco.

That fairy tale is what every teenage girl dreams about.

But for Angela, the fantasy became reality. On April 26, 2013, she wed longtime sweetheart Michael Vecellio at St. Nicholas in front of about 85 friends and family members, including her father.

It all began in Paris. On the couple’s way home from a family trip to the Baltic, plane trouble forced them to stay overnight in Paris. What Angela didn’t know was Michael, who pretended to be miffed at the delay, had planned the incident all along.

Because Paris is her favorite city, Angela was thrilled.

Her beau of eight years, however, didn’t share her affinity for the City of Light and had long turned down her requests for a romantic trip there. On this supposedly

accidental visit, he pretended to grudgingly go along with a cruise on the Seine River.

Angela, a Gulfport, Mississippi native with genuine Southern charm, went out to the bow to take photos. As the boat passed under her favorite bridge, the Pont des Arts, she heard Michael say her name. When she turned, he was down on one knee with a ring. The river and bridge were lined with people cheering and clapping, and the captain was honking his horn in celebration.

the making, and Angela had fallen for it hook, line and sinker. “Michael’s not romantic every day by any means,” she says. “But when he is romantic, he goes big or goes home.”

A month after the big proposal, the wedding planning began. One detail was certain: The festivities would take place in Monaco.

“I love Monaco. It’s small and quaint but still exotic and foreign,” says Angela, a chiropractor practicing in West Palm Beach.

Serendipitously, the groom’s parents, Palm Beachers Kathryn and Leo Vecellio, traveled there once or twice a year on their yacht, so Monaco felt like a second home.

With planning underway, Angela met with designer Christian Siriano of Project Runway fame. “I knew I wanted something large and long that looked like a fairy-tale dress,” she says.

Instead of a dress, Siriano talked her into a bustier with two separate skirts—one for the ceremony and a “more manageable” one for the reception. And while the second skirt still proved a bit challenging to dance in, it lived up to the “fabulousness” Siriano promised.

A monogrammed veil was a must for Angela, but conventional bridal designers were unwilling to do it. Ultimately, she thought outside the box and found a vendor on Etsy.com who created exactly what she wanted.

When it came to jewelry, however, Angela had no trouble finding what she loved. She adorned herself with an assortment of gorgeous pieces that had been borrowed and gifted. “There was lots of jewelry going on,” she admits.

Her bridal debut to the couple’s 85 invited guests—all near and dear to their hearts—drew more than a few gasps. With the lavish Siriano skirt trailing behind her, Angela entered the church like a modern-day princess. She carried a collection of white and cream roses, peonies, tulips, ranunculus and sweet peas wrapped with a piece of lace from her bustier. A charm featuring her late mother’s photos hung from the bouquet.

The reception was at the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, an Italian palazzo-inspired house surrounded by nine magnificent gardens that Angela can only describe as “a magical place.”

Everything was perfect, including the food.

The array of dishes incorporated locally sourced ingredients such as Brittany lobster and French cheeses, one of Angela’s weaknesses.

“I don’t have a sweet tooth, but I live for cheese,” she admits.

The ceremony may have been 5,000 miles away from home, but Angela knew she wanted to give nods to New Orleans. With Gulfport an hour from NOLA and half of her family being Cajun, those traditions had always been a part of her life; her wedding would be no exception. ❤ Fleur-de-lis motifs were featured on the guest totes and wine stoppers, and Michael wore a fleur-delis cufflink and stud set (a gift from Angela) for the ceremony. ❤ When it came to music, Angela had only two playlist requirements: “La Vie en Rose,” the song that was playing when Michael proposed, and “When the Saints Go Marching In,” the New Orleans classic. ❤ Each piece of the cake served to guests held a flag that read, “Laissez les bons temps rouler,” CajunFrench for “Let the good times roll” and a classic tagline for New Orleans.

caviar at Chez Jean-Pierre in Palm Beach. The chef for her reception offered a similar dish but with a glitzy twist: All the eggs were painted gold to complement her gold and cream color scheme.

As for cocktails, the bride and groom toasted with their personal favorites: rosé Champagne for her, American bourbon for him. It was one of many personal touches that helped make the occasion so special.

Despite the beauty of the surroundings, not everything went according to plan. Angela recalls how neither she nor Michael was sure where to cut the cake. They turned to their local wedding planner, Frank Damgaard. While he was an expert on all things Monaco, he was baffled by some American traditions. Take the groom’s cake, for instance. Frank couldn’t figure out why Michael needed his own cake, much less why it was a Monaco Grand Prixinspired Ferrari on a racetrack.

At his advice, the couple ultimately cut the first piece from the top of the cake. Now

the top layer, which in America is traditionally saved and eaten on a couple’s first anniversary, is sitting in their freezer with a big piece missing.

Mother Nature decided to bring a sprinkle of reality as well. It began raining as the couple made their way to the reception, which meant a tent needed to go up at the last minute, altering the entrance. Angela, in true adaptive heroine fashion, hiked her skirt up and carried on. The rain soon cleared, and the weather became beautiful for photos and the last surprise Michael had planned for the day: a fireworks display.

With the myriad of festivities behind them, the new Mr. and Mrs. Michael Vecellio headed off to French Polynesia and a new reality.

“The first day of our honeymoon, we got to our room, put our bags down and marveled at having absolutely nothing to do,” Angela says.

Nothing, that is, but embarking on the happily ever after chapter of their story … for those who believe in that sort of thing. «

During the Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness’ third annual Treats and Sweets fundraising event, at the Palm Beach home of Dede Merck, professional and nonprofessional bakers joined together to create more than 6,000 confections to benefit the West Palm Beach-based nonprofit. Though a bake sale might seem an incongruous fit for a foundation that tackles eating disorders, the Alliance fights stigmas and eases fear of food with the message that all foods—sweets included—are good in moderation.

For both Kino and McCann, decorating is the best part of the process.

“It’s a peaceful thing to do, and it’s artistic,” Kino says.

For Hilary Jordan, one decadent dessert isn’t enough. This lifelong baker took inspiration from her job as a graphic designer when making her large edible valentines and faux-bois bark fudge. The shortbread valentines took about three

days to create, while the peanut butter fudge with white chocolate piping was a weeklong process—with a lot of trial and error. “You learn something every single time [you bake],” she says.

“You keep accumulating this knowledge and getting better and better.”

John Shaw Sundy moved to Delray Beach in 1894, at a time when the town was primarily known for the cultivation of pineapples. He became Delray’s first mayor and served eight terms in office. In 1902, he built the residence that bears his name.

In the midst of a landscape crammed with shopping malls, Sundy House is a welcomed escape. The interior of the property contains a full acre of manicured tropical gardens, dotted with gazebos and intimate dining tables. Not a leaf is out of place—you would not want this landscaping bill, even for a week. Start with a drink at the circular bar, framed in natural light by a ceiling skylight, and proceed to one of the enclaves of peace and sanity within those stunning gardens.

Most diners would be happy with a bowl of cold gruel in these surroundings, but fortunately the food is far better than that. Much of the credit goes to Executive Chef Lindsay Autry, who trained under Michelle Bernstein and appeared as a finalist on Top Chef: Texas. She specializes in creating New American dishes dotted with touches of Southern comfort food— creamy grits here, black-eyed peas there—adding up to meals that are well-seasoned and satisfying.

Roasted tomato soup ($11) is a splendid way to begin. Thick and savory, it is enhanced by gremolata and smoothed out by pulled mozzarella that melts gently into the broth. On the evening of our visit, a special starter of farro “fried rice” ($14) is innovative and striking, with the crunchy grains livened by an assortment of garden-fresh vegetables and wild mushrooms and paired with Key West shrimp.

You make your entrée selection from the eight or nine options on the ever-changing menu, augmented by daily specials. A paillard of Duroc pork ($29) consists of a chop first brined in mustard and cider, then pounded, breaded and sautéed. This is flavorful meat, fork-tender and resting on a bed of those creamy grits. A whole branzino ($32) arrives crispy as advertised—remarkably moist, considering the entire fish has been deep-fried—served with wilted arugula and shaved fennel.

The wine list is just as innovative as the food.

The several hundred selections are weighted heavily toward California properties and concentrate on boutique wineries not in general circulation such as Flowers, Tandem and Jarvis. Prices are generally

Our shared dreamsicle ($9) consists of a slice of fluffy chocolate orange mousse, garnished with refreshing orange ice cream and candied almonds.

Service is provided by a coed staff that is friendly and eager to please. The wines of the South of France are very much like the region itself—elegant, generous and delightful, filled with sunlight and conjuring up images of life as it should be lived.

The area is best known for dry rosé, which was extremely popular in America before the White Zinfandel epidemic swept the land.

The popularity of the original pink-hued vins has been on the rise again in recent years—and fortunately so. The wines are crisp and bright, touched by the faintest suggestions of tannin and red fruits.

The best-known versions come from Côtes de Provence, Les Baux de Provence and Bandol. For a friendly introduction, try a pretty bottle of Whispering Angel ($20) from Château d’Esclans, which is owned by Sacha Lichine, son of the late Alexis Lichine, who was partly responsible for introducing French wine to the United States. When it comes to food matchups for these rosytoned wines, remember the advice of Julia Child: “Rosé goes with everything.”

Along with Bordeaux, Provence is unique among French wine regions with a classification of wine estates as opposed to vineyard areas. Fourteen properties were deemed crus classés (or classed growths) in 1955, and the indication on the label is a guarantee of quality. The most commonly available in the States are Château du Galoupet and Château Roubine. The most common red grape is Mourvèdre (also popular in the nearby Rhône Valley), although Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are being more widely planted. Popular white grapes in Provence include Viognier, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc and Ugni Blanc.

Whether white or red, Provençal wine has a different aroma and flavor profile than the wines Americans usually drink. Many who have spent time in the region insist they pick up scents of rosemary, thyme, lavender and other wild herbs native there. The reds tend to be distinctly earthy on the nose, although fruit emerges easily on the palate, while the whites are generally devoid of barrel aging, which makes their herbal characteristics more pronounced. Either way, it’s best to judge them on their own terms rather than compare them with California Chardonnay or Cabernet. Keep in mind,

too, that these wines are designed to go with food; the whites are a dream with shellfish, while the reds match perfectly with red meats and wild game.

To the west of Provence lies the Languedoc-Roussillon, the largest wine-producing region in the world. Historically, this area has been more associated with mass production than quality—particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, when vintners focused on turning out “fighting varietals” designed to compete with inexpensive wines on American supermarket shelves. To a certain extent, this is still true: Look closely at a low-priced bottle of “California” Pinot Noir, and often you’ll find the wine comes from this French region.

In recent years, however, quality has been on the rise in the Languedoc-Roussillon as a new generation of young winemakers focuses on cultivating the area’s natural strengths. The best-known appellations are Coteaux du Languedoc, Corbières, Faugères, Minervois, Saint-Chinian and Côtes du Roussillon-Villages. A good introduction to the new wines of this area is Marius, made by powerhouse Rhône winemaker Michel Chapoutier. It’s available in red, white and rosé versions and retails for $12. In the $20 range, check out the wines of Gerard Bertrand, Hecht & Bannier, Château Léoube and Château de Jau. Any of these options will provide a supple and fragrant match to grilled dishes and are as easy on the palate as they are on the pocketbook. That’s living well. «

As the school year picks up in Palm Beach County, help your kids eat healthy and get active at school and home with First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign.

In the last three decades, the rate of childhood obesity in America has tripled.

Today, nearly one in three children is overweight or obese. Since becoming first lady in 2009, Obama has committed herself to the Let’s Move! campaign’s ultimate goal of ending childhood obesity within a generation.

Implementing Let’s Move! this school year is easy. Begin with food. In 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released new guidelines for school lunches, the first major revision in 15 years. The changes boost the nutritional quality of the meals, requiring more whole grains, fruits and vegetables as well as less fat and sodium. Portion size is also a key amendment, with menus planned for grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 to ensure and demonstrate proper portions.

Healthy choices can also be made at home. To promote better nutrition, the USDA introduced MyPlate, a new food icon that serves as a visual reminder to make fruits and vegetables half of every meal, filling the rest of your plate with whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy. The Let’s Move! website also has sample 2,000-calories-per-day menus with recipes for everything from breakfast burritos to spinach lasagna roll-ups and Hawaiian pizza. When it comes to eating healthy as a family, always remember the three P’s: Plan meals and snacks for the week, purchase when you aren’t hungry and stick to your grocery list, and prepare meals in advance on days when you have free time.

The final component to the Let’s Move! campaign is physical activity. The initiative recommends students between the ages of 6 and 17 be active for 60 minutes a day at least five days a week, while adults should be active for 30 minutes five times a week. There are many ways to meet these quotas and spend time together as a family: Schedule a pre-dinner jog, participate in a weekend relay race or take a cue from the White House and plant a garden. Change isn’t always bad, especially when it comes to the evolving world of art. Last year, Boca Raton’s Elaine Baker Gallery was renamed the Baker Sponder Gallery. This year, it’s welcoming new artwork. For its 2013-14 season, the gallery will exhibit works by artists never before seen in the gallery, including Natvar Bhavsar, Mauro Perucchetti and Sophie Ryder. From September 3 to October 31, visitors can catch a glimpse of the season in a preview display featuring works from upcoming exhibits, such as Self Portrait, Warhol (shown) by Lluis Barba. Spanish-born Barba has been exhibiting internationally in solo and group shows since the early 1980s. His work often involves layering contemporary iconography over images steeped in the art history lexicon to create a decoupage effect intended to force a dialogue between the viewer and the subject. Eleanor Ylvisaker Stylist Eleanor Ylvisaker contributed to the fashion pages of Harper’s Bazaar and Lucky magazines before turning entrepreneur in 2004 when she co-founded Earnest Sewn denim. Her latest venture, launched in July, is Feyt, a styling website where users receive personal fashion recommendations and curate a digital closet.
