Charity Begins at Home hen I was a little girl, my parents owned a modest coffee shop in New York. My father cooked everything from scratch, including at least eight soups a day—all of it delicious. Although he made a living behind the counter, not a day went by that I didn’t see him offering to feed a homeless person or sell food at a steep discount so a large family would have enough to eat.

That probably wasn’t the best business decision, but I could tell he always felt good about it. Children learn by what they see, and my father’s example certainly left an impact on me. Today, as the publisher of Palm Beach Media Group, I am fortunate enough to be able to help many charities personally and professionally. Palm Beach Illustrated gives generously in our community through corporate involvement in myriad charitable events a year. By working with our clients and the causes they support as well as partnering with various charities in Palm Beach County, we are able to see the positive effect we have had—and continue to have—over the years.

The Palm Beach Charity Register is yet another way to support the charities in our area. I’ve heard this publication referred to as the “social bible,” but its purpose is so much more. The magazine is a compendium of many of the major fundraising activities in our area and serves as a way to connect you with diverse groups to see where your donations can make an impact.

The Palm Beach Charity Register also embodies the generous spirit of Ron Woods, the founder of Palm Beach Media Group, who passed away in May. He supported many of the charities featured in this book, which was first published more than 20 years ago. We are honored to continue his legacy of giving—and, I hope, inspire even more philanthropy that may be percolating behind your own counter.

With that in mind, we felt it only fitting to offer up sneak previews of what this season of charity blockbusters has to offer. We’ll deliver exciting teasers to get your social calendar bursting.

Before we begin, take a look at the crowd pleasers from last year—just to see what needs to be done to surpass the thrill of the 2012-13 season. u Palm Beachers were treated to an out-of-this-world experience as the newly renamed South Florida Science Center and Aquarium welcomed five former NASA astronauts to its annual gala. u Stargazers of a different kind were enthralled as the Everglades Foundation’s ForEverglades benefit continued its tradition of big name-dropping with entertainment by ZZ Top and Jerry Seinfeld. u Don’t underestimate the power of money to create a festive mood.

u The Palm Beach Police Foundation had the auction items of the season: a flight to Vegas with Rod Stewart to watch his Caesars Palace show went for $55,000, two tickets to the college football finale at Sun Life Stadium brought in $20,000 and a flight to Scotland on Donald Trump’s new Boeing 757 along with a round of golf on Trump’s new course near Aberdeen topped $130,000. u The Gentlemen of the Garden’s final Devil’s Night proved it may be hot in hell, but it sure is fun.

After a two-year hiatus, the Young Friends of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County, in partnership with the Antique Row Association and Palm Beach Illustrated, presents an Evening on Antique Row— Redux!. Attendees can sip, shop, stroll and celebrate with hundreds of their nearest and dearest. u What would happen if kids ran the world? Find out at the Hanley Center’s Family Picnic, where child chairmen Noah LoFasso and Landon Branch are calling the shots and promising lots of kid-friendly activities.

Christina’s 2-month old daughter, Raeleigh, suffered from DiGeorge syndrome. Unfortunately, her local hospital in Okeechobee was not equipped to handle a baby with the condition, so Raeleigh was transferred to West Palm Beach to receive treatment. Christina, a single mom to Raeleigh and a 2-year-old son, faced limited options. She could travel more than 60 miles each way to reach the hospital, stay in the hospital room without her son or—the worst scenario—not visit her daughter at all. She also was not prepared for her daughter’s medical expenses, let alone the associated costs of travel and lodging.

Luckily, Christina found Quantum House, a residence for families whose children receive treatment in Palm Beach County for serious medical conditions. Quantum House allows mothers like Christina to be near their children when they need them the most and not have to worry about where they will eat, sleep or shower—or how they will pay. It is the only hospitality house of its kind between Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

In recent years, proceeds from Quantum House events, such as Taste of Compassion, have allowed the organization to purchase new appliances 20

and renovate the home’s playroom and dining room. With hundreds of family members welcomed annually, these updates to keep the home clean, comfortable and environmentally sound are critical.

Additionally, the house is planning a major expansion onto a site just north of the building. This will add 20 family suites to the existing 10 and allow Quantum House to serve an average of 500 more families annually.

As it stands today, 300 families are turned away every year because of a lack of rooms.

“The house and the rooms where the families stay go beyond lodging. They become a place where families learn their child is being taken off a ventilator, has made it through a life-saving or life-changing surgery or might be coming down the home stretch from painful therapies or treatments,” says Executive Director Robi Jurney. “The joy is seeing the families who have crossed our threshold during some of their darkest days have the opportunity to stay together, go through this journey with care and compassion and leave to return to their own homes.” (quantumhouse.org)

❰ good deed: Historical Society of Palm Beach County ❱ By transforming Florida history accounts in textbooks into hands-on experiences, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County is engaging students in learning about their area’s past.“We want kids to learn about not only their state history but also their local history because if they get excited about their history, they will become more involved in the community as they get older,” says Tony Marconi, curator of education at the museum.

The society’s community programs and downtown museum, supported in large part by funds from events such as this year’s Evening on Antique Row—Redux!, have impacted more than 282,000 children in Palm Beach County in the past 10 years.

“As part of our Florida Studies in fourth grade, we have been able to bring to life much of what we research with visits to the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum and outreach programs presented by Tony Marconi,” says Ellie Colpitts, a fourth-grade teacher at Palm Beach Day Academy. “When Mr. Marconi speaks to our students, they are mesmerized by his stories and information, which always leads to a lively question-and-answer session.”

In addition to welcoming field trips, the society has found ways to share its offerings in schools countywide. Working with The Palm Beach Post, the society developed a series of tabloids that cover Florida history and civics. The tabloids are delivered to every fourth- and seventh-grade classroom in the public school system, reaching roughly 13,000 fourthgraders and 12,000 seventh-graders every year.

Marconi developed a Traveling Educational Trunk Program, which offers “education in a box”: handouts, books, DVDs, artifacts and crafts related to the subjects of the early South Florida settlers, the Seminoles and the Miccosukees as well as the Pioneer Era. Teachers can borrow the trunks for as many as three weeks, giving students an in-depth (and sensory-friendly) look at the topics.

“As a subject of study, history would be static for students without the tangible artifacts gathered at the museum that enable us to connect with our predecessors,” says Laurie Cotton, secondary social studies program planner at the School District of Palm Beach County. (historical societypbc.org)

❰ good deed: Boca Raton Regional Hospital ❱ One day, a woman in her early 40s came to the Center for Breast Care at the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health and Wellness Institute at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital for a routine screening mammogram.

When the technician went over the patient’s history, it was evident she was at an increased risk for breast cancer.

That same day, the patient had a breast risk assessment performed at the institute’s Jean and David Blechman Center for Specialty Care and Preventive Cardiology. Based on her risk factors, the specialist recommended molecular breast imaging.

The MBI found a very small sign of cancer that was not revealed on a mammogram. The patient then had an ultrasound correlation that confirmed the diagnosis.

The patient’s cancer was found early, and she had a good prognosis.

If she had not been identified as high risk and assessed in the high-risk breast clinic, her cancer might have grown until her next visit—and then the outcome, tragically, could have been very different.

Each year, the Go Pink Challenge, a community-based initiative supported by events such as the Go Pink Luncheon, targets a new piece of 24

technology BRRH needs. Last year, the hospital was able to add GE Healthcare’s new MBI technology to its spectrum of capabilities. This equipment can help detect breast cancer at its earliest molecular stages. BRRH is one of only three sites in the nation to have this advanced technology.

Prior technology purchases made possible by the funds raised have all had tremendous impacts on the people of the community and allowed BRRH to offer state-of-the-art diagnostic services and imaging for the detection of breast cancer. They included an automated 3-D ultrasound machine, a positron emission mammography scanner (which can detect cancer even in dense breasts) and a fully digital, handicapped-accessible mammography van.

“Mammography will detect perhaps three cancers per 1,000 women. If you have dense breasts or are at high risk, molecular [imaging] can detect an additional seven. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you’re one of those seven, it makes a difference,” says Jan Savarick, president of the Boca Raton Community Hospital Foundation. “Last year, we did over 97,000 procedures for the diagnosis and detection of breast cancer, so it really makes a difference. It’s huge.” (brrh.com)

Starting Out Young When it comes to philanthropy in Palm Beach County, age is just a number.

Meet young locals who are making an early appearance on the charity scene.

In 1901, while studying sociology at Barnard College, 21-yearold Mary Harriman formed the Junior League, an 80-member volunteer group of affluent young women who wanted to help disadvantaged people in New York City. Today, the Junior League consists of nearly 300 chapters worldwide, with more than 155,000 young women volunteering their time and effort in their local communities.

More than 700 of those women are active in Palm Beach County as members of the Junior League of the Palm Beaches and the Junior League of Boca Raton. In the Palm Beach chapter, efforts include mentoring girls at the Children’s Home Society’s Nelle Smith Residence for Girls, distributing Thanksgiving food baskets to needy families and working with teens in the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Members also organize community events to raise funds for the nonprofits at which they volunteer. Two of the Palm Beach league’s biggest fundraisers are Deck the Palms Holiday Market—a November shopping extravaganza—and Worth Tasting on Worth Avenue, a food and wine event held at Palm Beach’s Via Amore courtyard in February. All profits raised at these events go directly to the programs the chapter supports, keeping local children’s well-being in mind at all times.

“Receiving a thank you or a hug from the girls we work with in the foster care system or juvenile justice system … makes all of our volunteer work worth it,” says Pam Schanel, president of the Palm Beach chapter.

Every year, more than half a million Americans die from cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With such a deep impact, the disease is tied to nearly every American.

For some people, that connection leads to action.

Eric Inge, a 34-year-old father of two, was inspired to make a difference when he learned leukemia is the second-most common cause of death among children, only behind car accidents.

For Stacey Mikel, 35, cancer is more personal: She was 19 years old when she lost her mother to lymphoma.

“In some way, we are all affected by these situations,” Mikel says. “Each of us who can has an obligation to give back.”

Give back they did. After raising a combined $108,231 for cancer research and patients, Inge and Mikel were named this year’s Man and Woman of the Year by the Palm Beach chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The annual competition challenges nominated participants to spend 10 weeks gathering donations for LLS. The male and female candidates who raise the most are crowned the winners. But the real winners are the cancer patients who receive financial support from the organization. This year, the Palm Beach chapter contributed $800,000 for local patients’ medical treatments, and the 13 Man and Woman of the Year participants raised more than $278,000.

“We hope to reach the new patients within 30 days of their diagnosis and stay with them, assisting them in their cancer journey,” says Pam Payne, executive director of the group.

Inge and Mikel hope their participation in the competition will inspire others to get involved and help improve lives—including their own.

“The single biggest part of my growth as a young professional has come through volunteering,” Inge says.

Eight years ago, Laura Wissa and her husband purchased a house that belonged to the Clarke family, early pioneers believed to have settled in the Lake Worth area in the 1800s. As the first owners of the house who were not descendants of the Clarke line, the Wissas were interested in the history of the previous three generations who resided in the home.

“I went to the Historical Society [of Palm Beach County],” Wissa says. “I thought the research would only take a day or two, but it actually took five.”

Around the third day of her research, Wissa was approached by the society’s development director to help plan Evening on Antique Row, an upscale street party fundraiser organized by the Young Friends of the Historical Society.

Thus began Wissa’s involvement with the Young Friends of the Historical Society, a group of young professionals who raise awareness of and funds for the society and its museum through special events.

“Creating events that provide exposure for the museum and our local history will allow people to appreciate all that Palm Beach is,” Wissa says.

This year, the Young Friends of the Historical Society is rolling out a new initiative titled Cocktails in Paradise, a series of monthly social events celebrating the county’s history. The first event, held in September, took place at the Sundy House in Delray Beach and featured guest speaker Daisy Sundy, the granddaughter of the city’s first mayor who grew up in the historical home.

Funds from these events support the society’s outreach in local schools and carry out its mission of preserving the area’s history. “[The Historical Society] provides a context of what it means to live in our community and define who we are as residents of Palm Beach County,” Wissa says.

Young at art In a world of technology and digital expression, a group of young professionals is reminding others to appreciate the skilled lines of a brushstroke or the focused lens of a camera.

The Young Friends of the Norton seeks to educate the community about West Palm Beach’s premier art museum and inspire a love of art in others. Members network with fellow art lovers while supporting and expanding the museum. Recently, the group helped purchase two pieces in a permanent exhibit.

The Young Friends also donates art supplies to local school children to promote arts education at an early age, an effort personal to chairman Daniel Kahan, a West Palm Beach architect.

“Growing up, the arts were always critically important in our family,” he says. “We were exposed to painting, sculpture, music and design at a very young age.

“The continued success and excellence of the museum depend on the excitement of the next generation,” he adds. “For me, the primary arts museum in any community has a duty and obligation to anchor the broader culture in that community.” u
