With 320 days of sunshine each year, Panama City Beach more than earns its nickname—the “World’s Most Beautiful Beaches.” This Florida Panhandle gem boasts 27 miles of sugar-white sand and turquoise Gulf waters. Whether you’re chasing family fun, a romantic getaway, or a laid-back escape, PCB has something for everyone.
The beach itself is the main draw, with a different experience at every stretch—from the lively piers and colorful shops near Pier Park to the peaceful dunes of St. Andrews State Park. Take a sunrise stroll, paddle through calm bays, or hop on a boat to Shell Island, a wild barrier island accessible only by water and beloved for its seashells and dolphin sightings. Adventure comes naturally here. Known as the “Wreck Capital of the
South,” PCB offers more than 50 dive sites filled with shipwrecks and artificial reefs. Above the surface, families can spend the day splashing at Shipwreck Island Waterpark, teeing off at Topgolf, or cheering for sword fights and mermaids at Dolly’s Pirate Adventure, a highenergy dinner show filled with music, stunts, and family fun.

Wander the Trails
The parks on Panama City Beach provide a shady respite full of natural wonders. Visit St. Andrews State Park, where not only will you find 1.5 miles of pristine beaches bordered by the Gulf and the Grand Lagoon, but two nature trails where migratory birds, alligators, and deer hide out. Camp Helen State Park offers a quieter experience, along with the rare ecological wonder, a coastal dune lake. Wander the trails and check out the protected bird species, or maybe you’ll catch sight of a bald eagle. To immerse in the wetlands and wildlife, visit the 2,900-acre Panama City Beach Conservation Park, where you’ll find 24 miles of trails, boardwalks over protected habitats, and guides to local plants and animals. They also offer guided Audubon walks, volunteer programs, and a pavilion with picnic areas, public restrooms, and an outdoor classroom.

June through August, you can hear the strains of music filling the air around
Aaron Bessant Park. Thursday nights, the amphitheater lights up with the Summer Concert Series. Bring your blankets, chairs, and picnics, and enjoy an evening of free live music.

Window shopping doesn’t cost a thing, and Panama City Beach has plenty to keep you busy. Pier Park and Pier Park North are packed with shops to peruse, but for something that taps into local finds, check out the Decor by the Shore trail, which features a bevy of independent boutiques and mom-and-pop shops for all those one-of-a-kind finds. Or pop into one of the many thrift stores like Save the Closet—which provides disaster relief to those in need—that have a wide variety of
vintage treasures and stylish attire filling the shelves. Shop the Shore (p. 32) is a handy list of a dozen different places for fabulous finds.

Daryl Paul is a professional lifeguard, firefighter/ paramedic, and the Beach Safety Director for Panama City Beach Fire Rescue. A Panama City Beach native, he has been lifeguarding since 2011 and currently leads a growing team of full-time lifeguards who patrol the area’s 9.6 miles of sandy beach. Now 36, Paul says the beach is in his blood—he even met his wife, Cierra, while both were working as lifeguards. They now share their love of the Gulf with their three young children.

What would you consider the beach essentials for a safe, fun day on PCB shores?
“You need water, sunscreen, and an umbrella, but before anything else, you need information,” Paul says. “The best thing you can do before stepping on the sand is sign up for PCB’s daily beach flag text alerts.”
Text PCBFLAGS to 888777 for realtime updates on rip-current conditions. “We fly our flags based on rip-current risk, not wave height,” he explains. “The Gulf can look calm and still be dangerous.”
Equally important: Find your nearest guarded beach. “You have a one in 18 million chance of drowning in front of a properly trained lifeguard,” Paul says. “It is absolutely the safest place to enjoy the beach.”
When purple flags fly, what should visitors look out for?
“Purple flags mean stinging marine life,” Paul says. “For us, that typically means jellyfish. Sharks are part of the Gulf’s ecosystem, but they rarely cause issues.”
Lifeguards monitor wildlife closely and will alert beachgoers if an animal is displaying dangerous behavior.
What should visitors expect when single red flags fly?
“Single red means high rip-current risk,” Paul says. “Even if the Gulf looks calm, the currents can be strong. Trust the flags and the lifeguards—conditions can be deceiving.” A new ordinance allows lifeguards to issue warnings or citations when swimmers enter the water under double red. “That’s because the currents are simply too dangerous,” he adds.
What do you love about your job?
“I love doing something that matters for my hometown,” Paul says. “We’ve built this program from three full-time staff to a year-round team of 20—paramedics, EMTs, divers, medical responders— people who truly care about keeping visitors and locals safe.”
He says the lifeguards’ work extends far beyond surveillance. “We handle medical calls, missing people, wildlife rescues—you name it. But the most important thing we do is try to prevent that empty seat on the car ride home. We want everyone to enjoy this beach and go home safely.”
TIPS to BEach SMART Rip Current 101s
Our super-fine sand shifts easily, so rip currents form often along our coast. Even on seemingly calm days, deep cuts in the sandbar can create strong, fast-moving channels of water rushing away from shore.
As you head to the beach, check the beach flag at your access point or sign up for text alerts. If you see a single red flag, use extreme caution. If double red is flying, the water is closed to the public.
HOW RIP CURRENTS WORK
Rip currents start when waves push water toward the shore. That water must escape somewhere—so it funnels back out through deeper channels in the sandbar. These narrow currents can pull even strong swimmers away from the beach.
HOW TO ESCAPE A RIP CURRENT
If you find yourself being pulled outward:
• Do not panic.
• Float and stay calm.
• Swim parallel to the shore until you feel the pull release.
• Once out of the current, you will naturally reach a sandbar where you can stand or swim back in.
• I f you cannot swim out, float, face the shore, and signal for help by waving.

“You may want to help—but please don’t take action,” he stresses. “Call 911, and keep
your eyes on the person. Our lifeguards are trained and not far away.”
LIGHTNING AND STORM SAFETY
If thunder is close or lightning is detected, leave the beach immediately. Lifeguards monitor storms closely and will close towers when lightning is within an unsafe range.
SAND SAFETY AND BEACH STEWARDSHIP
Do not dig deep holes. Stay off dunes. Fill in all holes, pick up belongings, and leave no trace behind. Deep holes can collapse and trap children, damage rescue vehicles, and interfere with nesting sea turtles.
HYDRATION AND SUN PROTECTION
PCB’s white sand reflects intense heat. Hydrate before you hit the beach, bring ample water, use sunscreen generously, and take breaks in the shade—especially during peak summer temperatures.

A year of fishing in PCB rewards with diversity aplenty

As a well-traveled adult, I’ll always be grateful to have ended up in Panama City Beach, Florida. It’s a magical place, one whose beauty is only exceeded by its diversity of ecosystems and abundance of wildlife and is a paradise for all. Along the beaches, the turquoise waters of the Gulf light up in the sun as they lap gently against white sandy beaches. Bald eagles, ospreys, and pelicans stalk the flats from above, while wild blue herons and great egrets wade the shorelines in search of unsuspecting prey. Dolphins work in unison to push schools of mullet into shallow coves where they can more easily catch them, sea turtles and manatees, both docile and carefree, feed on sea grass in the shallows. Then there’s the fish—the true stars of the show. The waters that surround Panama City Beach offer endless opportunities at fishing success all year long, from trout and redfish in the backwaters, to snapper and grouper in the Gulf and everything in between. Join me as we take a journey through what a year of fishing looks like here on the Emerald Coast.
Winter
Our winters are typically mild and comfortable, outside of the few days when cold fronts pass through. Inshore on the flats, our primary target is the redfish, our hardy year-round resident gamefish that easily tolerates the cool water temperatures and thrives in shallow negative tides. Most of my winter days are spent poling the shallows in search of redfish either tailing or cruising the shoreline. Once you spot them, it’s important to take your time and close the distance quietly so you don’t spook any wary fish. In these situations, I like to use light spinning tackle, but fly fishing gear is very effective, too. Half of the battle is getting stealthy and accurate presentations to the fish. I prefer to use small soft-plastic baits, either flatlined or attached to a light jig head up to about ⅛ of an ounce.
When it’s overcast or too windy on the flats, I focus my efforts on wading bayous and tidal pools for large speckled trout. This is a different type of fishing altogether—the fish are rarely seen and far less skittish. Specks can be somewhat lethargic from the cold, but they’re not usually spooked because they tend to stay in water at least three feet deep. I actually prefer to use bait casting equipment in these situations and throw suspending or slow-sinking twitch-bait lures because they typically entice bigger bites.
caught. The best way to target sheepshead is with a live bait rigged with shrimp or fiddler crabs. Some anglers prefer a heavy lead weight to pin the bait to the bottom, but I like to use a light lead so that my bait will drift across the top of the rocks and not get eaten by pinfish or other predators. Don’t be surprised if you hook into a few redfish and pompano when targeting sheepshead, since both species inhabit similar areas and eat some of the same forage.
Spanish mackerel also start to populate local waters by early spring. An aggressive fish with a voracious appetite, Spanish mackerel are a blast to catch on light tackle and a great fish for introducing new anglers to the use of artificial lures. Jigs, spoons, and small plugs are great options to throw at schools of fish chasing surface bait. Trolling is also a viable tactic and probably the most common way mackerel are targeted.
Mid-spring is when we start to see the arrival of the bigger migratory fish such as cobia, king mackerel, and tarpon. Cobia tend to show up along the beaches when the water temperature hits 70 degrees Fahrenheit, followed shortly after by king mackerel. Late May is when the first schools of tarpon can be seen migrating along our coastline, and they will be plentiful into the first part of July.
YEAR-ROUND FISHING is guided by the seasons. There are schools of redfish in the winter, while springtime is ideal for angling for sheepshead. Many species are abundant in the summer, and fall ushers in, perhaps, the best bite season of them all.
Deeper waters around the inlet, bridges, and other structures offer completely different fishing opportunities. Big bull reds, mangrove snapper, grouper, and other bottom-dwelling fish tend to stay relatively active during the cool months. Medium to medium-heavy bottom or spinning gear is enough to handle most fish. Live bait on a Carolina-style rig or soft-plastic and bucktail jigs also work well.
Spring
As winter begins to give way to the longer and warmer days of spring, the bays and coastal waters along the beaches begin to flourish with a wide variety of sea life. Along the beaches, large schools of redfish cruise just outside of the surf, searching from inlet to inlet for food. These fish are usually aggressive and can be caught on a variety of artificial lures and live baits.
In the inlets along the jetties and other submerged structures, sheepshead start to stack up in preparation for the spawn. This is when they are most concentrated and most susceptible to being
Summer
Summer is a time for early morning sunrises and late evening sunsets on the water. Hungry speckled trout and redfish rule the early morning hours when the temperature is cool, and low light gives them an advantage when stalking fish in the shallows. Topwater plugs worked along flooded reed beds can get those explosive surface strikes many anglers crave. Big bull redfish can be found lurking in the heavy current brought on by hard falling tides and feasting on the seemingly endless supply of blue crabs getting swept out toward the Gulf of Mexico.
Schools of tarpon will be on the move. As summer progresses, those fish will disappear from the beaches and become more prevalent inshore around bridges and backwaters. Big live baits such as crabs, pinfish, mullet, and live or chunk ladyfish will give you a good shot at a silver king. In the Gulf, a wide variety of snapper, grouper, mahi mahi, mackerel, jacks, triggerfish, and many other delicious, fun-to-fight fish will be around to catch and enjoy at the dinner table.
Fall
Autumn offers some of the best fishing to be had all year. With its arrival, crisp northerly winds frequently blow, and changes
can be seen throughout the bays and nearshore waters. Schools of baitfish spawned in the spring are reaching maturity and stacking up in big pods where they become easy targets for all makes and models of gamefish. Mangrove snapper, redfish, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, flounder, and jacks offer plenty of action.
Inshore, the flats are teeming with life. Big schools of redfish cruise the shallows while speckled trout lie in wait in the grass, looking for an opportunity to ambush unsuspecting prey. Flounder make their way to the passes and inlets where they concentrate for a short period of time before ultimately ending up in the Gulf at one of the many nearshore reefs and wrecks along our coast.
As the water continues to cool, inshore bottom fishing heats up with snapper and grouper as they become far more aggressive and inhabit increasingly shallow depths. In open water, schooling fish such as bluefish, ladyfish, and Spanish mackerel will also be prevalent in the fall, gorging on any food source they can as they prepare to migrate south to warmer waters.

When you think of Panama City Beach, it’s easy to picture soft sand and rolling surf—but that’s just the beginning. Beyond the shoreline, you’ll find a playground of adventures waiting to be discovered. From scenic nature trails to off-the-beach attractions, there’s no shortage of ways to soak up the fun without a beach towel.
DIVING AND SNORKELING
For scuba divers in search of unique underwater adventures, PCB is the place to be. Underneath its turquoise waters lies a treasure trove of natural and man-made sites spread across the northern Gulf Coast.
“The diving here is phenomenal,” says Todd Yarbrough, course director at Red Alert Diving, a full-service dive center and aquatic training facility. “The variation of depth, the visibility, and the conditions and the animal life are just unparalleled.” Within just a few miles of Panama City Beach, divers will find more than 50 artificial reefs, sunken ships, and barges, as well as hundreds of natural limestone reefs.
“The artificial reef system we have here is pretty great,” says Yarbrough, who started diving when he was 12. “We have everything from 400-foot-long ships to 40-foot Army tankers for people to dive on. Our shipwrecks are all within recreational limits, and they’re as clean and as safe as anything can be in our sport.” Perhaps the
greatest draw—and one that appeals to all ages—is the marine life accessible around these dive sites. From amberjack to goliath grouper and nearly everything in between, Panama City Beach’s numerous dive sites are teeming with subaquatic creatures to be discovered.
For adventure enthusiasts without a diving certification, snorkeling off the coast of St. Andrews State Park or the secluded Shell Island is the perfect way to explore the area’s turquoise waters. The Gulf’s excellent water clarity, which is even better during the fall months, allows for plentiful encounters with undersea life.
Need a place to start—or dive in? Meet PCB’s Artificial Reef Guardian
Leading efforts to expand and protect Panama City Beach’s marine environment is Erin Graham, Visit Panama City Beach’s new Artificial Reef Coordinator and Coastal Resources Manager. Graham brings years of experience in saltwater fisheries management and artificial reef programs through her work with Alabama Marine Resources. Her passion for the water and dedication to creating sustainable fisheries makes her a great addition to the Visit PCB team and a driving force behind the success of the area’s growing reef program.
Now under the direction of the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Artificial Reef Program is focused on enhancing marine ecosystems while promoting diving and fishing opportunities along the Gulf. With funding from the Panama City Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, new reef deployments are boosting fish populations, increasing biodiversity, and
offering exciting new sites for underwater exploration.
“Artificial reefs play such an important role in supporting both marine life and our coastal community,” says Graham. “Each new reef promotes a more sustainable fishery while enhancing aquatic tourism ventures in Panama City Beach.”
Each reef follows strict environmental and safety standards to ensure sustainability. One exciting project is The Black Pearl, a 97-foot, steel-hulled pirate vessel originally constructed as a movie prop for productions such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. The structure was deployed in late 2025. In true Real. Fun. Beach. style, the structure has been enhanced with locally inspired piratethemed elements to create a memorable underwater adventure for divers.

This former U.S. Navy minesweeper is one of the most inviting wrecks along the Gulf Coast. Sunk in 1987, the 184-foot ship is located about 6 miles off the coast.
EMPIRE MICA
Built in 1941, this 465-foot ocean tanker was torpedoed by a German U boat, and one of its propellers now sits at Captain Anderson’s restaurant.
LIBERTY SHIP
This 441-foot World War II Liberty Ship is located in about 100 feet of water and about 10 miles offshore.

CAMPING
Camping in Panama City Beach is an experience like no other. Not only can you sleep out under the stars, hike beautiful trails, and roast marshmallows over a campfire—you can do it all within walking distance of the sparkling Gulf. PCB is home to one of the most popular state parks in Florida, St. Andrews State Park , where visitors can explore more than 1,200 acres of unique coastal terrain. This state park is perfect for tent campers and folks with RVs. With 176 campsites— for tents and RVs up to 45 feet—in the pinewoods near Grand Lagoon, the park has the largest selection of camping accommodations in the area. For the glampers of the world, there are three eco-tents available for rent with enhanced amenities including a queensize bed, air-conditioning, and Wi-Fi. The park offers more than 1.5 miles of sugar-white beachfront, and for those who like to hike or simply stroll through nature, there are two main inland trails. Heron Pond Trail takes visitors through a flatwood pine forest and past a historic turpentine still, while Gator Lake Trail offers a scenic view of Gator Lake. Other activities include watching
wading birds at Buttonbush Marsh, shore and pier fishing in the Gulf, and taking the boat shuttle to Shell Island, a pristine barrier island across the channel from the park.
BIKING AND HIKING
Walking is wonderful, but bicycling might get you through paradise quicker. With beautiful hiking and bike-friendly trails—plus plenty of bike rental shops—Panama City Beach is a trailblazer’s dream come true.
The Panama City Beach Conservation Park spans 2,912 acres and offers more than 24 miles of bike paths, trails, and boardwalks. The 12 designated trails range from less than a mile to 11 miles long. An additional mile of boardwalks through the park’s wetlands allows bird watchers unparalleled opportunities to view migrating and local birds.
For the explorer who wants a smoother, less challenging path to follow than those found in the Conservation Park, Gayle’s Trails are a great option. These paved pathways were named after former Mayor Gayle F. Oberst, who played a major role in securing the grants that allowed for the trails’ development.
The Gayle’s Trails trailheads are found in Aaron Bessant Park and Frank Brown Park . Gayle’s Trails offer cyclists the choice of three routes with a round trip of up to 19.5 miles. Visitors can choose to walk or bike the trails found within the parks’ boundaries, or they can follow them from park to park. They can also explore the many paths that lead away from the parks, such as the trail that runs from Frank Brown Park to the Panama City Beach Conservation Park (2.8 miles), or the stretch that parallels Highway 79 North to the Intracoastal Waterway.
PADDLEBOARDING
Beach lovers can surf the waves via paddleboard on Panama City Beach’s protected and open waters like the Grand Lagoon, St. Andrew Bay and various cold springs, rivers, and lakes in the region. While paddleboarding, guests can spy rays, fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and other wildlife beneath the water’s surface. Equipment is easily rented from vendors including PCB SUP.
WHAT BIKE FITS YOUR RIDE?
How do you know what kind of bike you are best suited for? Here are a few things to keep in mind.
Single-speed vs. Multi-speed
Traditionally, beach cruisers are designed as single-speed bikes— that is, they don’t have any gearing to change the resistance in the pedal stroke. That said, there are 3-speed and 7-speed versions. Having multiple gears is great for hilly terrain.
Pedal Brakes vs. Handlebar Brakes
Most beach cruisers brake simply by pedaling backwards, a centuryold technology known as coaster brakes. Handlebar brakes also are
easy to use, but they don’t have as clean a look and might require a bit more maintenance.
Fit and Comfort
When it comes to style, low-rider cruisers have a high “cool factor” and are a great choice for short rides around the beach. Longer rides are better when you’re seated in the upright position of a classic beach cruiser frame, which allows you to relax your arms and provides for a more efficient pedal stroke so that you are not wasting energy.

The S. Richard Seltzer Park preserves a representative area of undeveloped beach and provides a site for environmental education. With a spacious parking lot, the nearly 5-acre park provides public beach access beside a 170-foot Gulf-front dune system preservation. The park emphasizes interpretive displays to increase the public’s awareness of beach and dune dynamics. With a variety of restaurants and shopping nearby and no high-rises on either side, you’ll enjoy being immersed in the natural beauty of the Emerald Coast. ← CAMP HELEN STATE PARK
This often overlooked ecological gem sits on the far western border of Panama City Beach. Offering pristine beaches, excellent trails that wind through dunes and scrub oak forests, and a rare dune lake, Camp Helen State Park is truly a unique park. Camp Helen is bordered by water on three sides, and the unique combination makes it the ecological wonder that it is. Lake Powell forms the eastern border and is one of the largest rare coastal dune lakes found only in a few places in the world. The park is home to fi ve distinct natural communities—mesic fl atwoods, scrub oak, basin swamp, depression marsh, and marine unconsolidated substrate. Every year, athletes of all ages and their families crisscross the country for tournaments and sporting events.
Panama City Beach provides a picture-perfect backdrop for “playcations,” where teams and families pair competition with relaxation on the World’s Most Beautiful Beaches. With two major sports parks in town, visitors can balance game time with beach time—while locals enjoy first-class facilities for spectating and recreation.

Frank Brown Park has served sports enthusiasts and festivalgoers since 1978. Spanning 200 acres, it offers something for everyone. The Aquatic Center hosts year-round water aerobics, features a 5,000-square-foot splash pad and kiddie pool, and includes competition lanes for serious swimmers. Nature trails wind through local biodiversity, while soccer fields, baseball and softball diamonds, and basketball courts invite nonstop play. Visitors can bring their dogs to the park’s off-leash area or cast a line in the stocked fishing pond. This PCB original regularly hosts regional and national youth and adult tournaments, including events for the United States Fastpitch Association,
Grand Slam Baseball, USSSA and the World Sports League. Its 50-meter Olympic pool, complete with springboard and diving well, has welcomed major competitions like the Florida High School State Region Qualifiers.
Frank Brown Park continues to evolve. A $1.4 million skate park features a flow ramp and street plaza suitable for all skill levels and complements the larger competition skate park at Publix Sports Park. Indoors, the new pickleball and basketball courts are open, with eight additional outdoor pickleball courts on the way. A new 15,000-square-foot indoor facility will soon provide court space, classrooms for local programs, and serve as a temporary storm shelter when needed.

Next on the roster is a 130,000-square-foot indoor multipurpose facility designed for court sports, meetings, competitions, and e-sports. Plans also include a new parking area with pickleball layouts for everyday use and tournaments, turf upgrades for the north fields, enhanced sound systems, more turf around the PCB letters, and additional accessible parking.
