Now that quarantines and health concerns have made our lives more home-centric, we have come to appreciate parts of our domestic existence that we previously took for granted. One of those is time spent in the kitchen. This month’s cover subject, Ivey Leidy, has created a brand around intentional cooking and the health benefits associated with it. Fancy FLORA The pandemic’s early stay-home mantra rendered a fortuitous turn for Jupiter resident Zaneta Kuzelova: She finally launched her dream business, Joy de Fleurs. “My grandmother brought me to love and appreciate flowers,” says Kuzelova, whose luxe arrangements have quickly attracted local attention.

“She always grew peonies, dahlias, tulips, and many other beautiful flowers in her garden.”

Kuzelova emigrated from Czechia in 2015, and a European flair is part of her signature polished look. However, she also heeds trends. She notes that consumers are currently gravitating toward messy, natural looks reminiscent of spring gardens.

“Starting a business during COVID-19 is definitely a challenge,” Kuzelova admits.

“Fortunately, flower shops are rising; people can’t travel to visit their families but are still thinking of them.”

Her mixed floral cones are popular as birthday gifts, she adds. Boxes of roses convey romance, orchids express sympathy, and brightly colored mixed-floral boxes—to which she adds macarons from Wellington-based Sweets by Ester—radiate positive vibes and are the ideal get-wellsoon gesture. A SISTER Story In 2009, Palm Beach natives Kendall and Libby Glazer founded Stoney Clover Lane on their bedroom floor. They were still in high school at the time and viewed the venture as a creative outlet.

Now all grown-up, the sisters and their line of customizable accessories have seen dramatic success, with 400 percent growth year-over-year and sales in the high seven figures.

“It grew into the business people know today from a need we felt in our own lives,” Libby explains.

“We travel extensively and never felt like there were colorful, fun travel accessories available at the level and quality we expect.”

They started with patches and the rest is history. With Palm Beach as a muse, inspiration comes easy. “We grew up in such a colorful, fun, and relaxed environment, and that’s how we want people to feel shopping and using our products,” Kendall says. Libby adds that it also influenced their retail strategy. “We wanted our first brick-and-mortar store to be in our hometown, which is also a destination. The rest of our stores followed that same direction—destinations we love spending time in.”

As co-CEOs and co-creative directors, Libby and Kendall are not merely sisters but business partners. And while many might balk at the prospect of working so closely with a sibling, the duo’s dynamic couldn’t be more symbiotic.

“I think we both feel like we couldn’t have picked a better partner,” says Libby.

“When we disagree on something, it’s easy to quickly hash it out as sisters.”

“Our differences complement each other nicely,” Kendall adds. “I’m super involved in our social media and branding, and Libby’s heavily involved in the retail stores and product ideas.”

Beyond picking the right partner, the secret to their success is following their instincts, they say. “We have a really clear vision of what we want the brand to be and where we want it to go,” Kendall explains.

“We’ve always trusted our gut when making decisions and it’s always paid off.”

On the docket for the future of Stoney Clover Lane? More strategic licensing and fun collaborations with similar brands—and more stores. “We have our eyes on a few new markets,” Libby says. “You’ll definitely be seeing more Stoney Clover Lane locations in the next year or two.” (stoneycloverlane.com)

These days, playing it safe is the name of the game—but that Graduation celebration by doesn’t mean momentous occasions should be overlooked.

“House parties instead of huge venues have become the new normal, with a guest list limited to family and close friends, but still with beautiful decorations, music, and food,” says Andrea Sanchez, balloon stylist and event expert at Blue Lime Events (bluelimeevents.com) in Port St. Lucie, which specializes in custom balloon garlands, arches, and jumbo bouquets, all delivered via no-contact installation. “Virtual parties where the host has a really beautiful backdrop have also become popular,” adds Sanchez, who recommends virtual events for high-risk individuals. For in-person parties, disposable tableware, open spaces, and masks are a must.

Another popular pandemic-inspired approach to celebrating is the drive-by party, during which a caravan of decked-out vehicles drives past a special someone. Conversely, the guest of honor can hop in a decorated car to make the rounds at participating homes, where loved ones observe the festivities by waving, cheering, or handing out gifts.

Amy Littleson, blogger at Amy Believes in Pink (amybelievesinpink.com), knew she had to go big to mark her sister’s graduation from Vanderbilt University. “We did our best to make it as special as possible for her with a full at-home ceremony,” Littleson says. “It started in the backyard of Michael’s brother’s house,” explains Perez. “On Sundays, we get together to throw axes, drink beer, and cook out.” They opened their 10-target Port St. Lucie location in June 2019. In his West Palm Beach atelier, House of Clyde designer Scott Harper is reviving the fine art of MILLINERY

t all started with a hat. We’ll soon get to that.

Not to belabor the Cat in the Hat reference, but 41-year-old Scott Harper has lived many lives. His current incarnation is as a milliner, crafting custom caps from the surprisingly spacious West Palm Beach studio he carved out of a converted storage unit. For his clientele, the experience of creating these hats is as unforgettable as the compliments they elicit.

Yet it wasn’t always so obvious that Harper would one day find himself plying this trade. House of Clyde—the name an homage to Clyde May’s whiskey, the logo a nod to artist Jean-Michel Basquiat—has only been around for two years, but local stylesavvy ladies and gentlemen are already clamoring for one of his bespoke pieces.

Born in New Jersey, Harper lived a peripatetic childhood that landed him in Guatemala, his father’s homeland. As a teenager, he had difficulty focusing and wasn’t a keen student, so his mother enrolled him in a carpentry program at age 16. “Do something with the hands and the mind,” quips Harper, whose specialty was learning to make the marimba, a traditional Guatemalan xylophone.

This training would serve Harper well in the years to come. Shortly after completing his studies in carpentry, he moved with his family to Florida, finding work in Jupiter with a carpenter, crafting and installing cabinetry.

The gig didn’t last long before the carpenter retired and Harper began grooming dogs for a living, eventually opening his own shop,

to include aspects of their life story into the design, such as favorite trinkets and cherished pieces of jewelry. “There’s a nostalgia for wearing something that has been made expressly for you,” he notes.

The design process itself is fully collaborative. Harper provides an array of fabric samples, trims, and hat shapes for clients to pick from, gently guiding them through the creation. It takes approximately

Harper’s life has taken many twists and turns. Yet those turns have led him to this moment, in this atelier, making these hats.

That gig as a dog groomer? It led to Harper meeting his Venezuelan-born wife, Dahiana.

She is his model and muse, frequently featured in moody Instagram posts that capture the allure of House of Clyde hats in black-andwhite images, many photographed in Paris, the couple’s favorite city.

The dog-grooming business? That led Harper to acquire the bakery next door and open Taco Chula, the beloved Palm Beach Gardens taqueria, the success of which has allowed him to focus on his career as a milliner.

Before embarking on that chapter, however, he tried his hand as an artist. His colorful oil canvases line the House of Clyde studio walls, mixing and mingling with Harper’s newfound expression in his hats.

As for that first hat? It was one he’d long owned but that had never quite fit correctly and was too simple. “It didn’t say what I needed it to say,” recalls Harper, who took it apart to see how it was made. He also started watching videos and reading books on the hat-making process. This led to taking apart even more hats, researching where to acquire the best materials, and trying again and again to get it right. “I had to learn everything in bits and pieces,” he says. “I had to beat my head against the wall for a long time to learn the patience it takes to make hats.”

Two years later, House of Clyde was born.

Under his label, Harper seeks to push the boundaries of traditional design. “People are tired of the same old, same old. People want to let their hat sing. They don’t want to simply be hangers for what they wear.”

Harper employs the best fabrics and millinery techniques. Beaver and rabbit felt is sourced from Tennessee. Ecuadorian straw bases are produced by a fourth-generation family of weavers. Trims are equally special: grosgrain ribbon from France, lush silk velvets from Switzerland. The headband is leather and can easily be replaced if damaged by perspiration.

The final product arrives beautifully packaged in a bespoke hatbox tied with a black grosgrain ribbon. The opening is tantamount to unveiling a work of art.

Believe the hype: Chevy’s new mid-engine Corvette is one AMAZING supercar

If you’re a lover of adrenaline-pumping, finger-tingling, punch-in-thesolar-plexus supercars, I have two little words for you: New Corvette.

Just feast your eyes on the thing. It has more visual drama than RuPaul and Lady Gaga combined. More air-gulping intakes than an F-22 Raptor.

More ripped muscles than Sly in his prime. Even while standing still, it looks as if it’s slicing through the atmosphere at 200 mph.

When GM unveiled the eighth-generation ’Vette in Summer 2019, it sent shock waves through the supercar world. This was no mere reiteration of America’s favorite sports car—it was a complete reinvention of the brand. After 66 years of having its engine up front, this new C8 plants its honking 6.2-liter V-8 right behind the driver.

Yet delivering a mid-engine Corvette with almost 500 horsepower, sensational performance, otherworldly handling, and a huge step up in quality wasn’t enough for GM. No, it had to seal the deal with a surprising sticker. In this rarified section of the supercar market, where entry prices start at well above $150,000, a nicely equipped “base” Corvette Stingray costs—drumroll, please—$59,995. There are Chevy pickups that retail for more.

Even when you start adding on options, like the must-have $5,000 Z51 Performance package, with its beefier brakes, freer-breathing exhaust, and MagneRide adaptive suspension, you’re still only looking at around $80,000. This is the best-value supercar money can buy. Period.

Some of you may be wondering why it’s such a big deal to have a Corvette with an engine amidships. It’s all about handling poise and balance.

Whereas the last-generation Corvette C7 was a brutish blunt instrument, this C8 is a marvel of driving sophistication.

How sophisticated? After a week of runs to Trader Joe’s, curve-carving on interstate on-ramps, and foot-to-the-floor thrill rides, I would have happily donated a kidney to have kept this slingshot in my driveway.

This puppy is fast, blisteringly so. With 495 hp, 470 lb-ft of torque, and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic, the rear-drive C8 can catapult off the line and hit 60 mph in a pulmonary-pounding 2.9 seconds. Top speed? That would be 194 mph (or 184 with the Z51 Performance package).

Unlike the previous C7 ’Vette, which had an exhaust that growled like

an angry Rottweiler, this new mid-engine rocket ship sounds less raucous and more refined, though still authoritative when you dial up Sport+. And it’s an absolute joy to drive. You sit in body-clamping bucket seats, hang on to a rectangular wheel, and feel like you’re in the cockpit of a military jet. Heads-Up Display on the windshield, check. Touchscreen angled toward the driver, check. Switches and buttons everywhere, check, check.

While the upcoming Florida-friendly convertible version will be worth waiting for, in Corvette tradition the C8 coupe comes standard with a lightweight roof panel that stows in the trunk. When removed, it’s easy to run at

speeds of up to, say, 80 without too much wind buffeting.

For a supercar, the C8 is surprisingly accommodating. With the top in place, the rear trunk can swallow a couple of golf bags. Pop the trunk at the front (the frunk?) and there’s space for two well-stuffed duffels. That’s an excellent 12.6 cubic feet total.

Shortcomings? The biggest is the dreadful rear-three-quarter visibility; pulling out of an angled road junction is a real leap of faith. Road roar from those huge gumball tires, especially on harsh concrete, quickly gets old.

But here is a true engineering marvel, an all-American performance masterpiece that can hold its head high among anything Europe has to offer— and at a price that seems unreal. Now, remind me how to get to Route 66? «

FINS UP! JIMMY BUFFETT’s new fishing machine is a 1,200-hp power cat designed for speed and comfort

By Howard Walker These days, the Son of a Son of a Sailor (you may know him as Parrothead-in-Chief Jimmy Buffett) really doesn’t like to hang around when he’s heading out to his favorite fishing spots. That’s why the “Margaritaville” chorus leader’s newest boat—a stunning, 42-foot, custom power catamaran dubbed Last Mango and painted Buffett’s favorite shade of seafoam green—can top out at more than 60 mph and cruise effortlessly at 40.

“We have four Yamaha F300 outboards, so 1,200 horsepower in total,” says Vinnie LaSorsa, Buffett’s longtime captain and BFF (Best Fishing Friend). “At 6,000 rpm we’ve seen 61 mph. It’s a fun boat that gets us there and back fast.”

After spending the summer with Mr. B, as LaSorsa calls him, chasing bluefin tuna off Cape Cod and Nantucket, Last Mango will soon be heading down to Florida for the winter, docking at Pompano Beach.

Buffett and LaSorsa are already planning wahoo-fishing excursions to the Bahamas and sailfish hunting in the Keys.

“Since we took delivery, we’ve been using it a lot,” LaSorsa says. “We’ve probably put 400 hours on the engines and covered over 7,000 miles. It’s been all over the place.”

Buffett, who splits his time between homes in Montauk, Palm Beach, and “a little trailer in Malibu,” had pretty specific requirements for his new boat. After years casting a line from his beloved West Palm Beach–built Rybovich Express sportfisher, it seems Mr. B was looking for something that went a little faster, but not at the expense of comfort. He loved the look, performance, and smooth ride of the ultra-sleek, 42-foot power catamaran from South Carolina–based Freeman Boatworks. But, according to LaSorsa, he really wanted a boat with a pilothouse instead of an open center console.

As LaSorsa notes, “Jimmy only had three requests: power-opening windows for the sides of the house, shock-absorbing seats, and a retractable power awning for the cockpit. Oh, and 58 rod holders so you can fish from pretty much anywhere on the boat.”

Why was a pilothouse so important to the 73-year-old singer-songwriter? According to Captain Vinnie it can get cold and foggy up in the Northeast, so it provides a warm retreat. Then in the midday heat of Florida and the Bahamas, it becomes an air-conditioned haven.

As you might expect, Last Mango boasts a very cool sound system.

Designed for the boat by JL Audio, it pumps out Buffett’s favorite playlists through speakers in the cabin, cockpit, bow, and even up on the tower.

“When Mr. B’s on the boat he’s pretty much exclusively at the helm,” adds LaSorsa. “Being behind the wheel for him is the relaxing part.”

Any scary moments while out on the ocean? LaSorsa says he won’t forget a trip to the Bahamas earlier this year, in an area southwest of the Berry Islands known as The Pocket. “We were heading down to the Exumas and got into a heavy southeaster with wind against tide. The seas were a solid 8 to 10 feet. The boat did pretty well, but it was not comfortable. It was the roughest conditions I’ve been in.”

Even when Buffett isn’t wetting a line, it’s rare to see Last Mango tied to the dock. LaSorsa is the founder of Freedom Fighter Outdoors, a charitable organization that works with injured service members. With Buffett’s support and occasional participation, LaSorsa organizes fishing expeditions for wounded veterans. vey Leidy exudes wellness, complete with glowing skin, shiny hair, and the seemingly boundless energy required to manage a start-up holistic health business and chase after three young children. As a certified health coach and nutrition expert, Leidy leads a clean lifestyle, prioritizing a plant-forward diet that nourishes her from the inside out. But her journey toward well-being was a hard war fought: As a teen and young adult she battled anorexia and bulimia.

The West Palm Beach resident does not shy away from her past, but rather shares this history and her newfound relationship with food as a source of inspiration for friends and followers. On her blog, Living with Ivey, and corresponding Instagram account, she showcases her passion for simple, quality ingredients in colorful videos and posts. Eating disorders are nothing new, but they are on the rise, according to Johanna Kandel, founder and CEO of The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness in West Palm Beach. “It’s estimated that 30 million Americans will experience some sort of eating disorder in their lifetime; that’s 9 percent of the population,” she says.

What a lot of people may not realize is that there’s a growing consensus among researchers that up to 60 percent of the contributing

However, environmental triggers play a huge role as well. While media outlets have long bombarded audiences with relentless messages about body image, social media, which has grown exponentially in the last decade, has made matters even worse. “With social media in particular, people are constantly comparing their everyday lives to the highlight reel of someone else’s life,” Kandel adds. “But that one perfect photo may have been the result of 50 that were taken.”

For Leidy, the pressure to look “good” meant that “the most important thing was eating as little as possible,” she says. The American Psychological Association (APA) notes that, beyond body-image issues, there are numerous situations that can precipitate eating disorders, such as traumatic events and dramatic changes in one’s status quo. Some individuals might turn to abnormal eating behaviors to regain a sense of control or, as the APA specifies, “to escape problems in their day-to-day lives.”

Leidy’s story begins on a Virginia farm, where she and her sister grew up. On the cusp of her teen years, her parents divorced. Her sister, who is four years older, was soon out of the house, and Leidy was left feeling alone amid the aftermath of the family’s breakup. That’s when her eating disorder took off. Initially, she was able to keep everything under the radar. “I got really good at hiding it, and it was easy to hide because my parents were distracted,” she recalls. “For

me, it was all about control. I could focus on that and nothing else [including] my parents’ divorce.”

By the time she was an adult, her bulimia and anorexia had become a way of life. The impetus to finally take charge of her health came with the birth of her eldest son, Charlie. “I got so sick and tired of focusing on appearance,” she says. “I began to refocus on being healthy and to reprogram myself, if you will, toward health.”

In 2014, life took another major turn when she married Bobby Leidy, managing partner at Teneo Capital Management and the grandson of iconic fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer and Peter Pulitzer, a descendant of the newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer. The couple then added two more children, Bobby and Lilly, to their family.

Although the Pulitzer clan is synonymous with Palm Beach, Leidy confides that she wasn’t nervous about joining the famous family. While she never met Lilly Pulitzer, who died a few weeks before she came to know Bobby, she did have the opportunity to be around Peter Pulitzer, who passed away in 2018. “There was never anything pompous about them,” she says of the family. “Peter was a wonderful man—salt of the earth. But I do pinch myself a lot.”

Leidy was no longer anorexic or bulimic by the time she wed Bobby; however, she acknowledges that her eating habits were “disordered.” To help get a handle on the situation, she channeled her focus on food and wellness into furthering her education. After obtaining her health coach certification, she began counseling a small group of clients on the benefits of a personalized, holistic approach that integrates exercise, nutrition, and mental well-being. In addition to her one-on-one coaching business and website, she provides free information on Instagram, inviting followers to watch her exercise routines and prepare her simple, fresh recipes.

Malachy O’Hara Carron of Miami, a mother of three sons and owner of the interior design company Royal Carron, discovered Leidy’s business while scrolling through Instagram. Already a disciple of clean, organic eating and regular exercise, O’Hara Carron says she was frustrated by the few stubborn pounds she couldn’t seem to shed. “My body just held onto weight. I had been looking for help for years and years.” She connected with Leidy by phone and was impressed with her personable approach.

“She asked a lot of questions that really ran the gamut, from what I ate, my age, how many children I have, my blood type. I loved how detailoriented she was.”

She and Leidy designed a menu O’Hara Carron says she can live with forever. It includes lean animal protein, low-sugar fruits, healthy fats like avocado and nuts, and plenty of vegetables—and also leaves room for weekly tequila splurges. She doesn’t miss what’s lacking: processed foods, gluten, beans, grains, dairy, and nightshades, including tomatoes, eggplant, and bell peppers. After only four weeks under Leidy’s tutelage, O’Hara Carron witnessed a dramatic change. “I can’t believe how good I feel,” she says. “The bloating has gone down. My clothes fit better. I feel better.”

Sticking mostly to a plant-based diet herself, Leidy allows for flexibility in clients’ eating plans, though she cautions that there are some definite no-no’s. Whole foods are best, and the fewer additives the better. Read labels, she says, “and if the brain doesn’t recognize it, your gut won’t.” Promoting healthy gut bacteria is at the core of physical well-being, and processed food can upset the balance. “A lot of chronic disease in this country can be fixed with proper gut health.”

Counseling adults who are ready to embrace change is one thing, but setting the foundation for beneficial eating habits in children is another matter. Nevertheless, it’s worth the effort, especially considering the high rate of childhood obesity and diabetes in this country. Packaged foods, which have become increasingly prevalent in the diets of American children, tend to be full of highfructose corn syrup, the ubiquitous additive fueling a national surge in sugar consumption.

Up to the age of 4 or 5, Leidy says, children typically eat what you give them. “Then they go to school,” she concedes with a laugh, where they can be exposed to all sorts of less-than-optimal choices. “I try not to deprive them.”

In her own home, Leidy is not overly strict but does make an effort to incorporate lots of veggies onto her children’s plates. “I try to get a lot of greens in them through trickery,” she reveals. She sneaks veggies such as grated carrots and spinach into pasta sauces; a favorite is pasta with kale, arugula, and spinach pesto. Another kid-approved

Leidy believes in involving her children in meal preparation in order to pique their interest in healthy foods. “If they can get in the kitchen with me and get their hands messy, they are more likely to eat it because they’ve helped make it.” Together, they blend smoothies, dip strawberries in her homemade chocolate sauce, and use their own “kid-friendly” knives to cut up cucumbers and tomatoes.

With the knowledge that her daughter in particular will one day be exposed to excessive body-image scrutiny, Leidy is working to reinforce a positive attitude early. “I’m very conscious about not commenting on my own appearance, whether positive or negative,” she says. “I just don’t want to put any emphasis on that at all. Of course, my little girl loves to dress up and look at herself in the mirror, and I tell her she’s beautiful, but I try not to make appearance an important issue, and we never comment on other people’s appearances. Instead, I try to focus on praising them for how strong they are and how well they perform in sports or other activities.” She also scrupulously avoids con56

veying negative connotations about eating. “I don’t think shame should ever be associated with food.”

Regular exercise plays a big part in overall health—both mental and physical—and Leidy, an avid runner, is an enthusiastic proponent.

She takes Sundays off from a formal exercise program, but on the other six days she tries to squeeze in 30 minutes of cardio and an hour of strength training. While not everyone has extensive equipment at home, she stresses that it’s not necessary. “I’ve used laundry detergent bottles as weights, which are about 6 pounds each, and I’ve even used wine bottles as hand weights because they weigh about 3 pounds,” she says.

Given her long wellness journey, Leidy says she no longer holds herself to impossible standards and has come to terms with her appearance. She understands that without a healthy body, her goals would be unachievable. “It took me a while to love my body and what it’s done for me,” she says. “It’s produced three children, and I treat it as a machine that wants to work at the optimal performance level. You wouldn’t put cheap gas in a nice car. You have to take care of it.” «

Palm Beach history, chinoiserie motifs, and an artistic masterpiece come together at Ivor House

In 2018, the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach honored Ivor House with the coveted Robert I. Ballinger Award, which recognizes “outstanding individuals who have contributed to Palm Beach’s architectural heritage through the preservation of landmark properties.” Tom and Jordan Saunders are those individuals. They’ve brought passion, commitment, and much more to Ivor House, a Georgian Revival–style, circa-1937 home with Caribbean touches, built by one of Palm Beach’s most influential architects, Marion Sims Wyeth.

Its first owners were Joseph and Joan Cudahy, a prominent couple from Chicago; Joseph was heir to a meat-packing company, Joan to Morton Salt.

Eight families came after. Time and the subtropical climate took its toll on the house. While the most recent previous owners made many careful repairs, Tom and Jordan, who purchased the property in 2014, went even further. They spearheaded major restoration and renovation efforts to bring Ivor House to its present glory, investing four years of devotion into every detail alongside a trusted team of architects and experts.

Many of the home’s original elements embraced chinoiserie, a popular motif from that era that flows through the property to this day. Jordan can trace her love of the Chinese-inspired style to her childhood. Her father served in the Marine Corps in

Shanghai in the 1930s; her mother adored the culture and would pull Chinese influences into the design of their homes. It was part of what Jordan grew up with and has collected ever since.

To enter Ivor House is to step inside a whimsical wonderland, a fantasy realized through the astonishing trompe l’oeil murals gracing the foyer, hallways, vestibules, and along the staircase up to the second floor. “The walls called out for it,” Jordan says of the masterwork by the internationally celebrated British artist Graham Rust.

More than 150 birds native to Florida and Virginia (where the Saunders also have a home) appear against a soft grisaille background augmented with shadowy, traditional Chinese scenes and mesmerizing sculptural forms.

Each life-size bird is precise in its detail, with vivid plumage that springs off of the walls and lends a three-dimensional appearance. Some are mid-flight, while others are accompanied by their chicks. Rust’s signature monkeys also pop up in various mischievous guises. Out of the hand of one, for example, dangles a spectacular gold watch with a backstory. One of Tom’s business associates had gifted the timepiece to Jordan, and although she hastily returned it with polite regrets, it is fondly memorialized in this work. Rust replicated this specific tableau from two prior murals he painted for their New York City triplex and former Long Island home.

pelican, and an ibis perched on a fountain. The scenes surrounding the landing are imbued with additional personal references. One wall features a clutch of eggs in a basket that bears the initials and birthdates of each of the couple’s grandchildren. Another boasts miniature portraits of their dogs.

Rust gained his fame in the 1970s, after creating murals for Ragley Hall, the historic home of the eighth Marquess of Hertford in Warwickshire, England. Jordan came face-to-face with this work— which spanned a three-story staircase and the great hall ceiling—35 years ago, while attending a dinner at the property. “I was seated next to Lord Hertford’s mother-in-law, Brenda de Chimay, Princess Alphonse de Chimay, the most charming woman in the world,” Jordan recalls. “She told me some of the details because I was so mesmerized by the trompe l’oeil. I couldn’t concentrate on anything else.”

The next day Jordan called a friend in the know to ask about Rust, and indeed she had met him and knew where he lived. They set off immediately, embarking upon a hair-raising drive to Rust’s country home in a German car Jordan describes as a “rattle trap.” It had the steering wheel on the wrong side, preventing her friend from seeing the cars darting in and out and giving Jordan the impression that other vehicles were flying toward her. “It was an experience I’ll never forget,” she says. After they finally roared up to the house, Jordan rang the doorbell and Rust

answered. When she explained that she’d like him to do some work for her, he invited her in, thus beginning a wonderful friendship. “He has done three murals for us, and we have spent an awful lot of time with Graham. I am so glad that I went that day and rang that bell.”

Shortly after the Saunders moved into Ivor House, Rust came to visit. To begin the project, he meticulously measured the walls, archways, door architraves, and corners, while the Saunders scoured books on the birds and flora of Florida. Rust was then able to return to his studio in Suffolk, England, where he painted the murals on 6-foot-wide strips of a fine, linen-like canvas that is only produced in a small mill in Indiana. It took him three-and-a-half years to complete the work. He then rolled up each panel and sent them to Palm Beach to be installed.

Rust later ventured back to Ivor House to complete some final touches, such as painting over the seams. To further bring the piece to life, he added even more clever details, like painting tiny wood chips on a narrow ledge below where a red-headed woodpecker is drilling away at a door frame. He asked Jordan to remind the housekeeper not to rub away those specks. “One of the things we love about Graham is his extraordinary imagination,” says Jordan. “I never get tired of looking at the murals … and it reminds me of him every day.”

“I would say this is a work we don’t deserve,” adds Tom. “It was a collaboration, but it would be a fault to say it wasn’t his creation.”

Rust’s artistry covers 1,200 square feet and beautifully captures the elegantly playful spirit present throughout Ivor House. In the formal living room, pale gray walls with a subtle iridescent finish give way to a sophisticated

mélange of chinoiserie pieces and traditional, Europeanstyle furnishings, paintings, and a marble fireplace mantel.

Two nearly identical Italian, seventeenth-century, handcarved mirrors with Chinese motifs fill one of the walls above the bar. “I bought those mirrors at an auction over 20 years ago for an apartment and discovered, to my horror, that they were too big,” says Jordan. “I could not bear to get rid of them. I just couldn’t.” They sat in storage for two decades but immediately came to mind when Jordan contemplated that wall. “Wouldn’t you know, we took them out of the crates they had been in all those years, put them up on the wall, and they fit perfectly.”

Jordan and Tom made every effort to include or reinstate elements from the home’s original plans, but they also incorporated custom items to complement the spaces. Pecky cypress shelves line the library, where one could spend hours browsing books, perusing treasures, or simply taking in the view of the pool and garden fountain.

This area was once an open-air loggia that the previous owners decided to enclose; the adjoining former library is now Tom’s office.

Although every room has its own character, the chinoiserie theme is a constant across Ivor House, appearing in architectural accents and countless objects—even down to the place settings and ornaments that adorn the formal dinner table. style pavilion, characterized by celadon-colored fretwork and a Ludowici tiled roof lined on the underside with gold leaf. “We cannot escape the chinoiserie,” admits Jordan. “It’s in the blood.”

One of the couple’s most beloved spaces is the loggia that stretches along one side of the house. For design inspiration, Jordan consulted her books on the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, England, a seaside palace built in the eighteenth century for King George IV. It was during this research that Jordan discovered the plan that would serve as the basis for Ivor House’s loggia, which took a full year to build.

up the views to the gardens, pool, and pool pavilion. At night, mirrored walls over the cabinets flanking the loggia, as well as intricate mirrored framework, reflect the soft glow from the pagoda lanterns stacked against mirrored columns.

Jordan and Tom love to retreat to this peaceful spot, even during a rainstorm, when they can pull down shades to protect against the elements.

Throughout the restoration and design process, Jordan and Tom worked together as a team, but Tom asserts that it was Jordan who made each room “a unique experience.” When it came to the gardens, however, he had a dis

tinct vision. A direct blood relation to Field Jefferson—Thomas Jefferson’s uncle—Tom serves as trustee and chairman of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which oversees the preservation of Monticello, Jefferson’s Virginia home. Tom and Jordan’s Virginia residence is close by, and Tom looked to Monticello when planning aspects of Ivor House’s exterior spaces. He sought to open up the vistas and create clean, expansive areas using boxwood and other plantings that allow the eye to wander uninterrupted across the one-acre property from any vantage point. Everything is at the same elevation, including the

infinity-edge pool that presents as a sheet of blue glass against the lawn.

From Virginia to Palm Beach and China by way of England, Ivor House is a magical marriage of influences, cultures, and motifs that honors the integrity of Marion Sims Wyeth’s iconic architecture. Still, Tom and Jordan credit Graham Rust’s outstanding artwork as the true star of the project. “It is fair to say that Graham’s mural will permanently set this home apart,” says Tom. “You would not be able to have this in any house in Palm Beach or anywhere else without his skills and creativity as the artist that he is.” « PALMBEACHILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2020

FASHION CEO ELYCE ARONS DOES IT ALL, FROM DIRECTING HER LABEL’S COLORFUL LOOKS TO PREPARING VEGAN-FRIENDLY PARTY FARE FIT FOR A FIESTA

Valentine When Elyce Arons—co-founder of the ultrafeminine fashion brands Kate Spade and Frances Valentine—recently opened a pop-up shop off Worth Avenue, Palm Beach resident Jacqui Michel walked into her store and into her life.

“Immediately we liked each other,” says Michel, recalling their first meeting. “I turn into Via Bice—the sign for the shop wasn’t even up yet—and I look into the window at these adorable things and I see the adorable Elyce, and we start talking.” They became fast friends, forming the kind of kinship that happens only when two like-minded souls randomly find each other— connecting partly because of their shared sense of fun, and partly because Michel attended the University of Arizona while Arons was a student at its rival, Arizona State University.

What to do when you make a new bestie in the midst of a global pandemic? If you’re Arons and Michel, you go into party-planning mode, making sure your impromptu event is outdoors, socially distanced, and effortlessly chic. As the pair plotted a casual Mexican fiesta—at the Palm Beach home Michel shares with husband David E. Weisman,

just north of Mar-a-Lago—the vibe was so carefree that the preparation almost felt like an event in itself.

Relaxing in Michel’s sophisticated living room overlooking the pool, the pair pitched their plans, laughing as they showed off the assorted party must-haves they’d curated. Michel fetched the colorfully embellished Veracruz caftan from Frances Valentine that she planned to wear for the event, and then exited again to find suitable dishware. Meanwhile, Arons rummaged through a box of freshly produced table decor.

“We just got these in the store,” she mused as she pulled out napkins and tablecloths embroidered in navy, red, and yellow. “One of the main reasons we thought of a Mexican theme is because customers who like the embroidered clothing at Frances Valentine were asking us when we were getting table linens.” Michel returned from her trip to the pantry bearing vibrant melamine plates, glasses with cactus-shaped stems, and a straw donkey to be placed by the bar.

The guest list for the party had only one requirement, says Michel.

“When Elyce and I were brainstorming, we just said ‘fun people.’” They decided to seat their guests in an intimate garden off to the side of the house. “We call this the Secret Garden,” Michel explained, threading the way to the steps from the outside terrace, around the pool, and through another garden to the charming site. “To be outside and under the stars,

enjoying great food and company is what Palm Beach is all about.”

Special events designer and florist Tom Mathieu helped with table decor and designed the floral arrangements that shared space with candle votives and individual succulents. “I just told him I wanted bright,” says Arons.

An avid cook for most of her life and a vegan for the past four years, Arons prepared the bulk of the menu herself—with traditional handmade tortillas and mini churros sourced from Boca Raton’s Silver Sac Catering.

Arons says the event’s Mexican theme provided ample opportunity for a plant-based meal. “Obviously, we started with guacamole,” she says. “I have a great recipe for kale Caesar salad, and we had homemade gazpacho, which is so easy to make.” For her part, Michel suggested a taco bar, featuring tortillas, cilantro, peppers, roasted sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and avocados. “Everything you’d want to have,” adds Arons.

Dessert included what she calls “can’t stop with just one” spicy Mexican chocolate cookies, plus the churros. Though the party invitation gave guests the heads up about the vegan-only fare, Arons says even carnivores would have been none the wiser.

Although Arons is fully ensconced in the vegan lifestyle, it was about the furthest thing from her imagination when the self-described Kansas farm girl was growing up. “We raised Angus cattle,” she says. “In

college, I was a real burger-and-beer girl. After I got married, I was the mom who made bacon every day for my kids.”

As is often the case in any life change, Arons started with a small step toward veganism, deciding to try it for a couple of weeks. “What you quickly realize is that the old way of meal planning is always based around meat, then you add a starch and a vegetable.” Once Arons became accustomed to a plantfocused diet, she notes that she felt better and had more energy. She says she hasn’t looked back since.

Just because one person in a family goes vegan, it doesn’t mean the rest of the family jumps on the bandwagon. Of her three daughters—Katy, Jane, and Marni—Arons says one is “full-on” vegetarian (though she eats dairy and eggs, unlike Arons) while another is “going in the opposite direction.” Her husband, Andy, has not fully embraced the vegan lifestyle just yet. But recognizing the movement’s health benefits and popularity, he recently founded Plantabulous, a line of plant-based prepared and frozen foods that will soon be available in grocery stores.

Arons’ own storied career in fashion and retail was sparked by the kismet of a significant friendship: While in college at the University of Kansas (before transferring to Arizona State) she met the late Kate Spade—then known as Katy Brosnahan. The pair formed Kate Spade 72

New York in 1994, along with Spade’s then-boyfriend, Andy Spade, and a fourth partner, Pamela Bell. Their bond was cemented as the company grew into a fashion powerhouse. They remained as close as ever when, in 2006, the brand they built was sold to Liz Claiborne Inc. After the sale, Arons took time off, filling her days with her children, some cooking lessons, and a lot of tennis. But in 2016, she and Spade returned to their retailing roots with the creation of Frances Valentine, together with Andy Spade and new partner Paola Venturi. The timing was right for the fledgling company, as the two long-time best friends were

eager to start a new venture from the ground up. “We missed creating things; we missed the interaction with other people,” says Arons. “We missed working and making things.” As with their first brand, quality at a reasonable price point was paramount. “I used to see shoes I loved for $1,200 and thought it shouldn’t be this way,” she says. “There should be shoes for $400 that are just as beautiful.”

The new business began with an edited collection of shoes and handbags, and Frances Valentine began gaining momentum in the fashion world. But in a devastating blow to friends, family, and business associates, Spade died by suicide in 2018. Arons soldiered on, with the help of a team that has been with her since the beginning of Frances Valentine (and some who are veterans from the dawn of the original Kate Spade brand). Two years later, Frances Valentine pays homage to Spade’s joyous fashion sense, with the original embroidered caftan and tunic designs created to recall personal items straight from the late designer’s closet.

Recently, Frances Valentine has expanded (“organically,” as Arons explains) beyond accessories and clothing to include home goods. And why shouldn’t it? Kate Spade New York was a lifestyle brand before the term “lifestyle brand” was coined. Arons is simply doing what she’s always done best. And she has the numbers to back her up: “We doubled our business in 2019 and we expect to do the same in 2020.”

With robust sales, the plan is to increase the number of stores from three to five this year. Aside from the Palm Beach store—which closed for the summer and will reopen in November (pandemic permitting)—Frances 74

Valentine boasts retail locations in New York City and Sag Harbor, New York. Those locations have remained open during the COVID-19 pandemic, but Arons admits retail sales have been down due to low foot traffic. Thankfully, however, the brand’s business is still bustling online, where 85 percent of its revenue is based.

Whether in person or online, Frances Valentine’s offerings are items customers simply fall in love with, Arons explains. “They are the things that bring joy into your life, like these napkins,” she says, picking up one from those she will feature at the party and soon carry in her stores. “It makes me happy right now just to look at them.”

That same sense of joy factors into Arons’ personal fashion choices, too. “I absolutely love bold colors,” she adds.

The navy and red Geraldine caftan that she debuted at the party was months ahead of its planned October launch. She has a yen for versatility and individuality. “Vintage pieces have always played a part in my wardrobe, and it is those pieces that inspire a longing for the past but create a unique and timeless way of dressing today,” she says. “I like pieces that can dress up or dress down. Frances Valentine is my style.”

If your only point of reference for Swedish food is an Ikea meatball, then prepare to send your taste buds on a culinary journey, because Waxin’s Restaurant & Bar in Palm Beach Gardens is disarming that perception one beautifully plated dish at a time. “Sweden is without a doubt one of the top three culinary countries in the world,” says co-founder Patrik Waxin, who moved to Florida from Sweden nine years ago with his wife and fellow founder, Tessie, and their three children.

In addition to serving Swedish-inspired takes on American and global classics, Waxin’s aims to educate guests on the principles of Swedish cuisine. Menu highlights include Toast Skagen (hand-peeled ice ocean shrimp on buttered fried toast) and meatballs with the traditional fixings: demi cream sauce, pickled cucumber, lingonberries, and potato purée. There’s also Wallenbergare, a double-ground veal steak that Patrik Waxin refers to as a “luxury meatball.” Desserts like the strawberry puff (similar to a pâte à choux or profiterole with strawberries and dill) provide a sweeter taste of Scandinavia.

Waxin’s offers numerous indoor eating areas across its 3,800-square-foot space, as well as a lush garden patio that is ideal for social distancing. In the culinary world, a stage (pronounced staahj) is an internship where an aspiring cook works in a kitchen—or series of them—in order to study different techniques and cuisines. Stage, a new restaurant in Palm Beach Gardens, was founded in the same spirit of inquisitiveness and open-minded learning.

Chef Pushkar Marathe grew up in India, trained in Switzerland, and worked in restaurants throughout the Caribbean, Middle East, and U.S. He met partner and general manager Andy Dugard when the duo ran the Palm Beach loca-

tion of Meat Market. After deciding to open their own restaurant, they enlisted Gregory Genias, better known as Bootleg Greg, to develop their innovative bar program.

“People think we’re an Indian restaurant because we have an Indian chef,” says Dugard, “but our food is globally inspired by [Marathe’s] travels. Our motto is flavor-focused cuisine crafted by intuition.”

Marathe’s intuition encompasses dishes as diverse as lentil fritters, Korean barbecue ribs, yellowfin tuna ceviche, and fried chicken, as well as curries and a selection of Indian breads. He also aims to make food that is as healthy as it is creative. “We use butter and cream very sparingly, just as they do in the Mediterranean diet, and most of our menu is naturally gluten-free,” explains Marathe. “It’s not just conscious eating but also conscious cooking.”

Stage’s on-site garden produces 30 herbs and botanicals that are used in both the kitchen and bar program. “Natural expression of ingredients is very important in the food the chef creates, and I try to pair that in the cocktails,” says Genias. “Everything is either fresh from our garden or sourced from local purveyors.”

The foundation of the drink is Glendalough Rose Gin, doubledistilled with foraged botanicals and rose petals. Genias then adds Cappelletti, a spicy but subtle wine-based Italian aperitivo similar to Campari or Aperol, and Fever-Tree Tonic, a top-quality mixer infused with Indian spices that match the restaurant’s flavor profile. Served in a 19-ounce stemless coupe and garnished with star anise and basil blossoms from the garden, it reflects what Dugard calls “the harmonious tug of war” between the kitchen and the bar. “I try to create goosebumps with every cocktail I make,” adds Genias. “I want customers to be inquisitive and ask questions.”

he cultures of the Caribbean converge in South Florida, and all those island nations produce rum. Premium rum, however, only emerged as a category recently, and mostly as a response to market demand. As consumer appreciation for finer spirits increased, aged rum became an alternative to single malt Scotch, small-batch bourbon, Cognac, and high-quality tequila.

Is it sacrilege to mix premium rum into a cocktail? Not really—no more so than VSOP Cognac or artisan tequila, both of which can shine in the right recipe. Here, we showcase rums that are both distinctive and versatile.

Bacardi’s Facundo Rum Collection: These four limited-edition releases, drawn from the family’s private reserve, are aged between eight and 23 years. The eight-year-old Neo ($50) is the impossible dream—a white sipping rum, filled with spicy flavors of molasses and citrus. Eximo ($75) spends 10 years in oak barrels and emerges concentrated and layered, with the texture and palate persistence of a fine whiskey. Aged between seven and 23 years and finished in sherry casks, Exquisito ($135) is powerful and intense, with

herbal and pepper accents. After aging between 15 and 23 years, Paraiso ($300) is transferred to cognac barrels before release; like a great cognac, it is ripe, sweet, and mellow. While Exquisito and Paraiso are destined for the snifter, Neo and Eximo can work well with certain cocktails.

Rhum Barbancourt: After immigrating to Haiti from Cognac, Dupré Barbancourt established Rhum Barbancourt in 1862. The house is still a family business, with fifth-generation Delphine Gardère running it today. The 15-year-old Estate Reserve ($50) is a rhum agricole (double-distilled from sugar cane, rather than molasses). The floral nose is intensely perfumed with citrus; on the palate, lime and baked pear are balanced by honey, cinnamon, and pepper, followed by a reverberating finish. While complex enough to drink neat, this is also lean and flavorful enough to take the place of Scotch in a Rob Roy. Brugal: The Brugal and Bacardi families traveled from Spain to Cuba on the same ship, and both established distilleries in Santiago de Cuba. The Brugal clan left first, clearing

out prior to the Spanish-American War of 1896 and setting up shop in the Dominican Republic at Puerto Plata. Introduced in 1976, Brugal’s Extra Viejo ($30) is blended from rums aged up to eight years in used bourbon barrels. The rum is powerful and mouth-filling, presenting an assortment of baking spices, fruit, and chocolate flavors that linger on the long finish.

Papa’s Pilar: Distilled in Key West from rums sourced throughout the Caribbean and Central America, Papa’s Pilar is an unabashed homage to Hemingway and his beloved fishing boat, Pilar. The dark rum ($40) is aged 24 years in a solera composed of American oak barrels, port wine casks, and oloroso sherry casks. It is bold and dramatic, with hints of baking spices, honey, and caramel.

For a premium-edition of a dark rum cocktail, a classic old-fashioned is a good bet. To make, remove the rinds from two thick orange slices and muddle at the bottom of a large rocks glass with a sugar cube, three to four dashes of Angostura bitters, and a splash of water or soda;

add several ounces of rum, and as much ice as you want.

Based in Key West, the Papa’s Pilar dark rum honors author Ernest Hemingway’s bon vivant spirit.

When it comes to a white rum cocktail, make good use of these premium expressions and go with a mojito. At the bottom of a Collins glass, muddle six mint leaves, two teaspoons sugar, and a splash of club soda. Squeeze in the juice of one lime and add two ounces white rum; stir, add ice cubes, and top off with club soda. «

A local gardening advocate shares insight into how to GET GROWING

By Skye Sherman Palm Beach Gardens resident Anuella Alexandre’s passion for the power of plants and cultivating green spaces led her to launch A Green Community, an organization designed to educate individuals on their relationship to Mother Earth. By providing consulting services on urban gardening and edible landscaping, Alexandre works to eradicate food deserts and nature deficit disorder, which is defined as the negative moods and behavioral consequences of feeling alienated from the outdoors. The “fairy plantmother” also spreads the word through her Insta-blog, the Green Goddess Diary. Here, Alexandre provides four tips for starting a home garden of your own.

GROW HERBS. “Herbs grow effortlessly as long as they’re provided with a bright, indirect light source,” explains Alexandre.

“We know herbs are a great source of flavor for food, but they can also be used to make herbal teas that can help us heal. Parsley, cilantro, peppermint, rosemary, basil, garlic, chives, oregano, and dill are all easy-to-grow herbs.”

CONSIDER THE SPACE YOU’RE WORKING WITH. “For folks with limited space, consider the wide-row (aka intensive gardening) technique. Make beds 4 feet wide and take the square root approach when planting by dividing your garden into 1-foot squares. Companion planting is also a great idea as this allows you to plant plants that benefit from being around one another. For example: Basil and tomato pair well together, as do plants with names that start with the words baby, tiny, or dwarf—like baby milk bok choy.”

GET KIDS INVOLVED. “Many hands make light work, so get the whole family involved in the home gardening process. Involve kids in the seed-starting process; witnessing a seedling sprout is magical for children, and it teaches them patience. Let them pick out a plant at the nursery; give the choice of small succulent plants that are easy to maintain. Introduce arts and crafts in the garden, like imprinting leaves on clay, and let them get as dirty as they want. If they’re old enough, put kids in charge of something like pruning damaged leaves off of plants, watering, or pulling weeds. Plant berries like strawberries, blueberries, or mulberries for kids to enjoy as a snack while helping in the garden.”

PICK PLANTS THAT ARE RIGHT FOR WHERE YOU LIVE. “Florida has a lot of growing privileges, but one of our disadvantages is our depleted and sandy soil. Take steps to build up your soil during your first couple of years gardening; plant cover crops like alfalfa or sunn hemp during the off-season and use mulch as a cover to lock in moisture and condition the soil.”

Our area abounds with options for novice and experienced kayakers alike. In fact, people come from around the world to take on the Trapper Nelson Challenge offered by Jupiter Outdoor Center. IN HONOR OF BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, TWO SOUTH COUNTY RESIDENTS RECOUNT THEIR EXPERIENCE WITH THE DISEASE

Jordan and Craig Mazor’s “in sickness and in health” wedding vows were tested just four months after they were exchanged. Only 28 years old, Jordan had a lump in her left breast that a doctor had dismissed as dense tissue two years earlier.

She says it was “a complete shock” to learn she had Stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, which had spread to nearby lymph nodes. “Our world was turned upside down,” Jordan recalls. “My husband cried, which I’d never seen.”

Her mom, Lisa Racic, a nurse in Loxley, Alabama, flew to meet “the dream team” at Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute, including oncologist Dr. Jane Skelton, breast surgeon Dr. Joseph Colletta, and radiation oncologist Dr. Rashmi Benda.

“We made a plan—and my burial wasn’t part of it,” Jordan says. ”I felt hopeful.”

They started with a double mastectomy in December 2017. “When I

woke up my body was changed,” she says. “That’s when it really hit.”

She adds that her husband was a real hero during this difficult time. “He’d get me food at 3 in morning, with no complaining. We were in it together.”

She began chemotherapy in January 2018. Her shoulder-length hair fell out in clumps while she ran on the beach.

“I’m losing my hair, but I still have my running shoes,” she posted online. Her mom correctly diagnosed her “LOL” as an “SOS” and flew down.

That weekend the couple’s dog died of cancer—and her mom shaved Jordan’s head and Craig shaved his.

“Cancer had stolen from me again and again: first my boobs, then my hair, my dog, and my life as I knew it.”

At her three-hour chemo transfusions, she was able to find some camaraderie and hope with the help of “the Breasties,” a band of six young women.

“We talked about what we’d do when we were better.”

In July she started six weeks of radiation. When she’d hear the bell ring— symbolizing the end of someone’s treatment—she longed for her turn. “That bell is everything.” Finally, on August 16, radiation ended, and she rang the bell. “I even gave a speech.”

Breast reconstruction came the following month. By 2019 she went skydiving on her thirtieth birthday. “I thought the worst was over.”

But radiation had wrecked skin on her breast, forming scar tissue, and a dangerous staph infection led to removal of an implant in May 2020.

Now 31, Mazor hopes an August surgery will be her last. The surgeon rebuilt her breast with muscle from her mid-back, a procedure called latissimus dorsi flap. “A bunch of the Breasties have the flap, and we’re comparing,” she says.

Unfortunately, one Breastie isn’t among them. Not yet 40, Chrissy Miller died in early August. Jordan, who has a five-year survival rate of 85 percent, struggles with survivor guilt.

“Jordan before cancer and Jordan after cancer are two different girls,” she says. “I’m no longer naive or bubbly, and I’m searching for who I am. But I’m on the path to healing and happiness, and I realize how precious life is.” «

Tara Gustman was surprised when her gynecologist urged her to get a mammogram—that day—on New Year’s Eve 2017. The fitness buff, then 34, received the results on January 9. “It was a huge shock and tongue twister: Grade 3, Stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma,” she says. “I didn’t cry or ask why. I toughened up.”

The mother of two girls, then 3 and 5, called her husband, Michael, from the car. He asked whether she wanted to keep her diagnosis private or share it. With one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer, she chose to help others by documenting her journey.

In February 2018 she had a double mastectomy at the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. “Whatever I could do to get cancer out of my body, I wanted to do.”

She began a series of 16 chemo sessions that March.

Extreme nausea and exhaustion weren’t the worst symptoms; two weeks in, her hair fell out, including her eyelashes. “It was far harder than losing my breasts,” says Tara. “Now the world could see I had cancer, and I didn’t want to be pitied.”

To set a positive tone for her daughters, who loved having their hair brushed and braided, she included them when a friend shaved her head while they played Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song.”

“I tried to wear wigs, but my girls weren’t having it,” Tara recalls. “They said, ‘Be who you are.’ That was a powerful message they taught me.”

Tara also found strength in the chemotherapy room, of all places. “The nurses are walking angels,” she says.

So were five other bald, young women, the Breasties, including Jordan Mazor. “We had ongoing jokes, took our photos together, and started a WhatsApp group. We’ll have this bond forever.”

Four weeks after completing chemo, Tara started seven weeks—33 rounds—of radiation. “I thought after chemo it would be easy,” she says. “But your skin peels off from third-degree burns, and the skin underneath blisters.”

She was in such pain she debated holding back on her blog, Let Me Get These Off My Chest (letmegettheseoff mychest.com). But she realized support went both ways.

“When I was rock-bottom, I received love from people I didn’t even know.”

Despite ringing the bell in August 2018 upon completing radiation, her battle wasn’t over. She expected reconstructive surgery that November to be easy. “It’s the step in the journey that gets pushed to the side,” she says. “It’s not just a free boob job.”

Her skin was so burned from radiation that her incisions wouldn’t close, landing her in the emergency room on New Year’s Day 2019. “My doctor ordered me not to move or lift anything so the wound could heal. I laid in bed for 24 days. I did not shower or lift or hug my daughters.”

Her body took a full year to heal, and she notes that, “Until there’s a cure for cancer, I won’t be cancer-free.”

Despite her difficult journey, Tara credits cancer as her wakeup call. “I no longer take for granted the simple moments. Every day is a gift. I’m so grateful.” «

Museum MAGIC

Following a spring marked by pivoting to the digital sphere and staying close to home, the Boca Raton Museum of Art is on a mission to refresh its galleries and communal spaces.

It will host two new exhibitions, “Jeff Whyman: Out of Nature” and “Trine Lise Nedreaas: The Entertainers,” both on view from October 7 through January 3.

Like many arts organizations across the Palm Beaches, the Boca Museum took advantage of its COVID-induced downtime. Upon reopening in June, it debuted the open-concept Wolgin Education Center, where video artist Janet Biggs’ “Solitary Acts” collection played as the inaugural exhibit. The projection space will now be occupied by Trine Lise Nedreaas’ Pulse, a hypnotizing, six-minute loop of a woman hula-hooping with glowing hoops.

Nedreaas, who hails from Norway, is passionate about capturing and celebrating the weird, beautiful, and seldom explored aspects of the human condition. Her “Entertainers” video exhibition spotlights subjects such as clowns, a contortionist, a sword swallower, and more.

Jeff Whyman, on the other hand, is a ceramicist by trade with a knack for collecting; the shells, sea glass, Chinese crystals, mineral oxides, and wood ash that adorn his clay “rock formation” sculptures are a testament to his eye for natural beauty. Known to create these works in a single sitting, the Delray Beach–based artist reclaims a spontaneity that art patrons will find refreshing on the heels of hunkering down during the pandemic. The Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery in Tequesta recently unveiled its first completely virtual art exhibition, “Faculty Exhibit and Treasures from the Collection.” The show, which will run until December 31, features ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, photography, and more by the center’s talented staff as well as highlights from the gallery’s private collection. Viewers can also make purchases online, with proceeds supporting the ArtCenter’s faculty and programs. Standouts from the private collection include numerous pieces by Purvis Young, one of Florida’s most celebrated artists. October at the Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach is a feast for the eyes: frijolillo, golden rain tree, roselle, and white bird-of-paradise will be in full bloom this month.
