The next- generation Escalade / ESV. Is the arrival of the most anticipated generation of Cadillac’s crown jewel worthy merely of an introduction, or more of a coronation? We would argue the latter considering the level of design, craftsmanship and detail that transformed it into the epitome of luxury. The charge of taking an American icon and elevating it to new heights of perfection, perfection that existed solely in the hearts and imagination of the world’s finest designers and artisans was as exhilarating and monumental as the vehicle itself. Welcome to the Cadillac of Escalades.

From the Publisher

I am still like a little kid when it comes to the holidays. Not in the exact same way, of course. When I was young, I had great expectations of what Santa was going to bring. Each December, I waited for it to get cool enough in Tampa to be able to wear a jacket to go Christmas tree shopping (personal rule), and looked forward to the excitement of seeing how my family members would react when they opened the gifts that I had selected. These days, my thoughts turn to getting together with friends and family with no other purpose than to enjoy each other’s company. I look forward to hearing the beautiful holiday music in the services at church, and I can finally take the clock that quietly chimes Christmas carols every hour on the hour out of my closet, much to my husband’s dismay. I like how coffee shops add their own version of cheer with pumpkin-spiced, gingerbread and eggnog lattes on the menu. In the spirit of the season, it seems the entire world sets its differences aside for a few short weeks. And no place makes palm trees look more festive than Naples! Long distances are making it difficult for my extended family to be together this year, though. With our children growing up and having varying schedules and the need to share time with inlaws, arranging a big family party seems to get harder and harder. We all crave the fun and laughter we share when we get together, so we are planning a family gathering for the spring; I am grateful for any time I can get with my family. While I am in such a thankful frame of mind, I would like to thank all of you who have sent complimentary notes and made phone calls about the changes in our magazines, including our newly redesigned Charity Register this year. We have a very talented team (more like family) here at Palm Beach Media Group, who constantly strive to make our magazines better. It is always gratifying to know our readers notice and appreciate our efforts. Happy holidays, from our family to yours.

MEANINGFUL MOMENTS

VANESSA ROGERS / Hair & Makeup: Philip Douglas

With all the twinkle lights, festive parties, and delicious family feasts, this most wonderful time of the year has many of us dashing around with a spring in our step. Of course, it’s also a time when we can easily get swept up in a whirlwind of activities and forget to truly take it all in. The best holiday memories are often the simple moments with friends and loved ones, snapshots in time we revisit in our daydreams when we want to smile or laugh out loud. In this issue, our cover story is about what dreams are made of, as we spend a day with Janet Evanovich, who just released her latest adventurethriller, The Job, in time to make it onto holiday shopping lists. The famed author, who lives in Naples, has attracted millions of loyal fans with mystery novels that are injected with her unique brand of saucy humor. Raised in a hardworking blue-collar community in New Jersey, she reflects warmly on a simpler time when her two kids didn’t have a big house to live in or fancy sneakers to wear, but she made all meals from scratch and sewed her daughter’s dresses. In “Working Girl,” beginning on page 64, Evanovich shares the joys and challenges of building a media empire, and the juggle it requires to also carve out meaningful moments with family. And if you’re constantly juggling too much this holiday season, turn to Balance starting on page 133. You’ll find some high-tech ways to catch your breath, even if you only have five minutes—and a bit of expert advice on getting a better night’s sleep. We could all certainly use that. Wishing you and yours the happiest of holidays, packed with joyful memories to refill your daydreams and relish all year long.

Gingerbread Men Cookies

recipe

Nothing says the holidays quite like a baker’s dozen gingerbread men and women cookies. Paw and Elizabeth Mikkelsen of Mikkelsen’s Pastry Shop in Naples share their family recipe so you can make a batch of your own. The Mikkelsens also offer their best advice to help you seamlessly navigate the holiday baking rush at naplesillustrated.com/ mikkelsen. Ingredients 1¼ cups butter (softened) ¾ cup brown sugar ¾ cup, plus 2 tbsp. molasses 3½ cups pastry flour 1 tbsp. baking soda 1½ tbsp. cinnamon 1 pinch ground cloves 1½ tbsp. salt ¾ cup, plus 2 tbsp. cold water Sift dry ingredients together in a bowl. Set aside. Cream butter and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Gradually add flour mixture on low speed until well mixed. Add molasses and water; mix well. Press dough into a flat disc. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 3 hours. Roll out dough to one-quarter-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into gingerbread men shapes. Place one inch apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on rack. Decorate with colored icing. Enjoy! 26

MILA BRIDGER

Fiercely Funny From politics to social media, just about everything exasperates Lewis Black—and that’s what makes him so funny. Known for his humorous rants and ever-annoyed stage personality, the Grammy Award-winning comedian sheds light on current topics through wisecrack commentary that brings him to the edge every time. Be prepared for his hotheaded style of entertainment at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, Fort Myers, December 11. (239-481-4849, bbmannpah.com) —Jennifer Pfaff

CLAY MCBRIDE

NI: Is your act simply a form of entertainment, or do you use it as a way to vent and perhaps enlighten the audience? LB: No, I’m not trying to enlighten an audience with an issue. All I’m trying to do is to think in public in front of an audience and give them a sense that what we’re trying to deal with isn’t easy. [The country’s problems are] a lot more

complicated than everybody makes them out to be. The things that I talk about are the things that make me angry and I can make fun of. And that’s how it falls out. You had a past career as a playwright. Does the theater still play a big part in your life? I spent the last 12-plus years rewriting a play and [now] it’s being produced all over the country. It’s called One Slight Hitch. It’s a farce and romantic comedy about a young girl on her wedding day. Are you working on any other projects? I’m doing the voice of a character in a new Pixar film coming out in June called Inside Out. It’s really exciting. Pixar has some of the most creative people on Earth. It’s astonishing. Watching them work was like being inside Beethoven’s brain when he was composing a symphony. What do you want your tombstone to say? Wait here, I’ll be back in a minute. Insider Monumental Message

Nicholas Petrucci’s portraits of photographer Clyde Butcher, above, and Deb Jansen, panther biologist, two of the Guardians of the Everglades.

Canine

As he perused works of several artists along a New York street, Naples painter Nicholas Petrucci had an epiphany. “Nothing told a story,” he says. “That’s what I want to do, I thought, to work in portraiture that tells a story.” So he and his wife, photographer Connie Bransilver, decided to focus on a story “that’s in our backyard, the beauty around us,” says Bransilver. They created the Guardians of the Everglades, a multifaceted art and educational project that revolves around Petrucci’s life-sized portraits of leaders dedicated to preserving the precious unique ecosystem. Petrucci has so far completed 7 of 11 classical oil portraits of these Guardians, including renowned landscape photographer Clyde Butcher and former Florida Senator and Governor Bob Graham. The couple recently opened a studio in Naples where visitors can see the paintings. The space is draped with large swaths of gossamer silk printed with Bransilver’s ethereal photos of endangered Florida species. Other elements—a documentary film, featuring interviews with the Guardians, and an art book—are in production. Meanwhile, the public can visit the studio on Wednesday afternoons or by appointment, and attend upcoming special events there in February and April. (guardiansoftheeverglades.com) —Kat Smith

close-ups Photographer and part-time Neapolitan Jack Kenner has again gone to the dogs. His third book of pooch portraits, Dogs I’ve Nosed, From Here to Naples, captures some of the city’s photogenic canine citizens and their humans. More than just a picture book, this volume offers useful Atlas and athena Edwards information, like which foods are harmful to pets and which ingredients are beneficial. Some notable Naples chefs, including Mike Mueller of Café Lurcat and Daniel Virola of Bha! Bha! Persian Bistro, contributed dog-centric recipes. Other local dog lovers, such as Bob and Terry Edwards and Patty and Jay Baker, also supplied recipes for furry friends. Kenner, a pet lover himself, sold the book at recent events for Avow and the Humane Society Naples, donating the proceeds to the nonprofits. To purchase, visit jackkenner.com. —K.S.

Novelist Sarah Elle Emm Mereday

Greet and Eat Naples-based novelist Sarah Elle Emm Mereday proves that her husband, chef and restaurateur Charles Mereday, is not the only big talent in the house. The writer, whose first book was the popular women’s novel Marrying Missy, has published a third installment in her four-book Harmony Run Series of dystopian fantasy fiction for young adults, titled Chatoyant (Winter Goose Publishing, 2014). While this genre of fiction has been popular in recent years, Mereday’s themes, related to prejudice and racism, make her books a compelling read. “One of the biggest themes is we need to have hope in dark times,” she says. “The teenagers in the story do a great job of keeping things upbeat despite their circumstances. Mostly, I want young people to feel inspired to care for each other regardless of outward appearances and cultural differences.” The author, a mother of two young girls, will be the featured speaker at Chez Boët’s monthly Meet the Author luncheon December 4. In addition to hearing her talk, the lunch includes a twocourse meal and a glass of wine. (chezboetnaples.com; sarah elleemm.com) —K.S.

KRISTEN BALOWE

Christmas

Wynonna Judd started her career as one half of The Judds, the chart-topping mother-daughter duo who sold more than 20 million albums and garnered five Grammy Awards. When she began performing solo in 1992, her debut album, Wynonna, went quadruple platinum, and the hits have been coming since. Now 50, the country star—who has experienced her share of ups and downs in the public eye, including sometimes rocky relationships with her mother, Naomi, and sister Ashley—will flaunt her signature sass and sparkling stage presence in Southwest Florida. On tour with her band The Big Noise, Judd will perform songs from her holiday album December 10 at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, Fort Myers. (239-4814849, bbmannpah.com) —Jennifer Pfaff NI: What’s your show like these days? Judd: I’m just singing about what’s real to me, and the music that’s coming out is surprising even me. … My shows

are a combination of a lot of different subjects, and I’ve summed it up to be a tragic comedy. One minute you’re laughing, and the next minute you’re crying—because I am. Do you have any holiday traditions? We bundle up and take a walk into the woods, and we read The Christmas Story. My mom used to do it at night, because it was much more dramatic. [We also] say what we’re thankful for. I’m pretty surprised at the things that come out of our kids’ mouths. It’s a moment to stop and be grateful. … It keeps us grounded, no matter how successful we become. If you could go back in time, what would you do differently? I wish I hadn’t been so busy thinking about what’s next. That doesn’t allow you to fully live in the moment. I don’t know that I looked around as much and took it all in. My mother was the historian—she would stop and take the pictures.

Life Saver

During the four-second plunge from Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco Bay, Kevin Hines, then a suicidal 19-year-old, realized he desperately wanted to live. One of only 34 people to survive the jump, the now 33-yearKevin Hines old dedicates himself to helping others learn to live mentally well and educate people about mental illness. Hines, featured in the documentary The Bridge, travels around the United States and other countries to spread his message. “I talk openly and honestly about how I cope every day with chronic suicidal thoughts,” he says. He wrote a memoir, Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt (Rowman & Littlefield, 2013), to help others who are struggling find hope in his words. Hines, who has bipolar disorder and experiences hallucinations, says, “If others can educate themselves about their loved one’s life, struggles and pain, they will be better equipped to be there for that person in a productive way.” He also came to understand that he needed to take responsibility for his mental illness. He eats well, exercises, gets enough sleep, undergoes light-box therapy and takes medication at the same time daily. And he surrounds himself with supporters who can step in and help when he needs it. “If I’m not doing these things, I’m spiraling down in a deep dark pit of depression that can lead me to suicide,” he says. “Positive relationships, whether with friends, relatives or others, really help pave the way for people living with mental illness to improve their ability to live well.” Hines will bring his inspiring message as the keynote speaker at the annual NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Collier County luncheon, “The Magic is You,” December 5, at a private club in Naples. Elegance + Edge By KAT SMITH NI: Do you have a Florida connection? Webster: I’ve just bought a place in Miami, so I’m going to be a neighbor of sorts. I came in July because we were told the best time to buy a place in Miami is in the middle of the summer. We drove Alligator Alley and I have never driven in rain so hard. My wife was petrified. I was laughing my head off, because it was absolutely insane how hard it was raining. It was quite a journey.

I really like the edge, but I’m not stuck in a place that you call rock ’n’ roll, because that can be quite cliché.

&

Meet Stephen Webster at Marissa Collections and see his new designs December 2 and 3. (marissa collections.com)

Tell us about the new collection. I started this theme based on a William Blake poem, and a Blake illustration called Albion Rose. It was all about mythology and Britain. We’ve got two parts—Magnipheasant, a play on the word magnificent. It’s very colorful and quite elegant. The other look is called Lady Stardust, and that was for me about an iconic British person; I saw a performance by David Bowie when I was 14, and I thought, oh my god, I want to do something like that. I went to art school trying to find where I belonged, and it turned out to be in jewelry. How do you spend your free time? I’m writing my memoirs; they’re quite entertaining. I’ve written about my ’59 Thunderbird, which I bought after my first successful show in America as a $6,000 basket case. My wife and I saw it at the side of the road, and it said “For Sale, 1959 Thunderbird,” and I was born in 1959. So my wife said why don’t you buy it? We were flush with the fact that we just had this really amazing show. Eight years later, I finished restoring it, and I started doing these road trips. I just did my sixth one.

The journeys are always different. I go with my friend Jeff Feero, who was born in 1959 as well, so there’s sort of an emotional link. I love America and I love driving to the places not everybody wants to go—through the Midwest, or from New York to Texas or into Vancouver from Colorado. When can we read the memoir? I’m under pressure to finish it—from myself. I do have a publisher, but he doesn’t really care when I do it. He’s not banking on it for his next fortune. But next year is the twentyfifth anniversary of my company, so that’s a good year to bring out the book; it will coincide with some things we have planned. Who would play you and Jeff in the movie version of your travels? Jeff would hate me for this. He often gets mistaken for Cameron [actor Eric Stonestreet] on Modern Family. So he has to be played by that guy. I should be played by a very rugged English guy, who Americans know from a TV series called Deadwood, Ian McShane. I’m starting to look more and more like him as I get older. How does your jewelry suit Naples’ style? First of all, I won’t be bringing anything rock and roll—except for me. I use a hell of a lot of color and kind of a signature is adding elegance to things that you might associate with a seaside or resort wardrobe. With my Crystal Haze rings, I created fine jewelry you could wear in a more casual way. And I still believe in that. I think that’s why I do well in places like California, in Miami, in the South of France, because that’s exactly what people wear in those places. They like jewelry, but they need to be able to wear it not just when they’re going out dressed up.

Looking for more GROWTH AND INCOME? Here’s why dividends may be the answer. U.S. companies generated $1.75 trillion in free cash flow in the last 12 months — nearly double the amount from 10 years ago.2

40%

of total stock returns come from dividends.1

Many are using this extra cash to raise dividends — companies have paid $350 billion in dividends over this time.3

Payout ratios are still near 50-year lows, suggesting plenty of room to rise.

Imagine a land where blue-gray waters caress historic beaches that give way to greenery-dusted valleys and mountains. Days start with the promise of plucking cockles out of velvet sand before discovering ruins rooted in wildflowers, then visiting parks speckled with sheep and sitting down to a farm-totable feast. In Wales, the grand landscape isn’t a privilege—it’s a birthright. It’s no wonder artists have long flocked here to capture its interminable beauty and romantic spirit. Wales isn’t solely defined by its topography, however. A country of more than 3 million residents, it possesses its own identity and embraces its place within the United Kingdom. Above all, Wales (visitwales.com) offers a diverse vacation, whether you long to get lost in nature or find yourself amid cultural thrills. Cardiff, Wales’ capital city, is a marriage of old and new. A college town boasting three

universities, it has a vibrant food and nightlife scene housed in centuries-old buildings. The Welsh language, once waning, now thrives and can be heard on the tongues of babes and their grandparents. Even shopping corridors mimic this theme; step inside one of six historic shopping arcades to find the juxtaposition of old infrastructure and new commerce. The National Museum Wales (museum wales.ac.uk) anchors Cardiff’s cultural attractions. In addition to landscape works, it houses the Davies Sisters Collection, the largest collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings and sculptures outside Paris; Rodin’s bronze version of The Kiss, images from Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series and Renoir’s La Parisienne are among this impressive grouping. Children will enjoy the natural history floor, which spans four-and-a-

half-million years of Welsh history. From the National Museum, stroll to Cardiff Castle (cardiffcastle.com). Wales has more castles per square mile than anywhere else, with a recent count of 641. Cardiff Castle stands apart for its impeccable condition and opulent interiors. Originally a Roman fortress, the castle was constructed following the Norman conquest around 1100. In the mid-1800s, it became the property of the Third Marquess of Bute, who hired “art-architect” William Burges to transform the interior to an homage to Gothic splendor. Each room is a work of art, ensconced in gold, carvings and all imaginable—and unimaginable— forms of luxury decor. South of the castle, experience another facet of the city’s history at Cardiff Bay (cardiffbay.co.uk). Sailors from more than 50 countries settled here, and it’s now a hub of tourism and local activity. The café at the Norwegian Church Arts Centre is a picturesque spot to have tea before visiting the architecturally intriguing Senedd, also known as the National Assembly building (assemblywales.org). Cultural highlights include the Wales Millennium Centre (wmc .org.uk), home of the Welsh National Opera. Cardiff Bay represents a sliver of the Wales Coast Path (walescoastpath.gov.uk), which, at 870 miles, is the world’s longest continual coastal byway. Whether you go by car or

foot, travel east to Swansea. Known as Wales’ second city, Swansea feels worlds away from Cardiff, even though you can hop on the M4 and arrive less than an hour later. To explore the beaches of Swansea Bay is to step into the Victorian era, complete with fog-dense horizons and salt-swept bathhouses. Stop by Langland’s Brasserie by the Sea (langland sbrasserie.co.uk) and savor a traditional Welsh meal of cockles and laverbread—not bread at all but a seaweed puree—as you take in the iridescent ocean view and the rugged Mumbles headland. Sufficiently sun kissed, travel into central Swansea and visit Wales’ biggest covered market. Order a batch of Welsh cakes before heading to central Wales and taking a drive through Brecon Beacons National Park (brecon beacons.org). Established in 1957, it covers 520 square miles and is composed mostly of Old Red Sandstone that forms four regions of hills sliced by river valleys. This area is a wilderness fan’s Eden, perfect for hiking, NAPLESillustrated.com | DECEMBER 2014

biking, fishing and kayaking or, for those of simple pleasures, basking in one of the most glorious views in all of the United Kingdom. Brecon Beacons also has many small towns, which have their own identities and attractions. In Crickhowell, indulge in the British country-scape and stay at the Gliffaes Country House Hotel (gliffaeshotel.com), a nineteenth-century estate with a Downton Abbey aura. Drive on to Abergavenny, the gastronomic capital of Wales with a foodie

scene that includes an annual festival and the lauded Hardwick Restaurant (thehardwick .co.uk), before continuing on to Llanthony. Here, you’ll discover the treasure that is Llanthony Priory, a twelfth-century Augustinian monastery. Today, half of the estate stands in stunning ruins and the other has been converted to a hotel (llanthonyprioryhotel .co.uk). Lastly, visit Hay-on-Wye (hay-onwye.co.uk), the secondhand book capital of the world. A must for bibliophiles, Hay-onWye has charm to spare, with narrow, cobbled streets and 39 bookstores. If you miss the annual literary festival in May, don’t fret— simply spend the afternoon browsing books before tapping off the evening with a pint at The Blue Boar. When your Wales adventure comes to a close and England beckons, there are many routes from which to choose. Opt to leave through Chepstow, tucked along the River Wye, and enter into Gloucester. Cross the river by bridge and, with Chepstow Castle at your back and England at your feet, start planning your next visit. «

AMERICAN BEAUTY

Ferrari is building just 10 of its glorious F60 America roadsters for U.S. collectors. Even at $2.5 million apiece, they’re all sold By Howard Walker 62

Money, so the old adage goes, can buy anything. But even if you had a spare $2.5 million, you couldn’t buy Ferrari’s latest creation, the F60 America. That’s because only 10 of these 730-horsepower, V-12-engined superroadsters are being built. And even before the car was unveiled at a swanky party on Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive in October, they’d all been sold—gone, literally, in 60 seconds. There had been no advertising, no test drives, no sales pressure. Just a whispered phone call suggesting the buyer might want to have his Gulfstream whisk him to Italy to take a look at something very special. Discretion is key: Buyers are chosen by Ferrari for their unlikeliness to instantly sell the car for what would be a guaranteed humongous profit. Expect to see the names of drivers who have been quietly collecting Maranello’s finest for decades, like Ralph Lauren, Wal-Mart heir Rob Walton, Wall Street investor James Glickenhaus and former Microsoft Corp. President Jon Shirley, whose 1954 Ferrari 375MM Scaglietti took the coveted Best in Show title at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

What will they get for their rumored $2.5 million investment? Rarity. To celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of delivering its first cars to the United States, Ferrari has created a bespoke convertible version of its thundering F12 Berlinetta grand touring coupe. History is repeating itself. In 1967, original U.S. Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti cajoled Enzo Ferrari into creating an open-top version of the 275 GTB4 coupe for his convertible-loving U.S. clients. The result was the 275 GTS4 NART Spyder, one of the most beautiful sports cars of all time. t’s 9 a.m. Most people are just starting their workday; Janet Evanovich is already well into hers. Having been up and well caffeinated before the crack of dawn, the famed author takes a rare morning break, emerging from her home office in stretchy pants, a loose-fitting, comfy top and not a stitch of makeup. Her unassuming appearance is a serendipitous juxtaposition with the grandiose setting: a 12,000-squarefoot Port Royal home in Naples, which she shares with Pete, her husband of 50 years, and their gentle Havanese, Ollie. Evanovich is a woman of rare wealth for a writer. Her life reads like a dog-eared paperback novel of a heroine you keep at your bedside table for inspiration. First catapulting to fame with the Stephanie Plum mystery series 20 years ago, Evanovich has penned 45-plus novels and landed numerous times on The New York Times’ bestseller list. She made her first million selling the movie rights to the first title in the Plum series, which was published in 1994; One for the Money finally made it onto the silver screen in 2012, starring Katherine Heigl. “I believe in hard work and timing,” the author says of her long-standing success. “I consider myself to be a lucky person, but I mostly have made my own luck. I just kind of scratched and clawed my way up once I came out with the Plum series.” And she is quick to acknowledge the legions of loyal fans that have followed her NAPLESillustrated.com | DECEMBER 2014

The Job, released November 18, is the third book in the Fox and O’Hare Series. Far right: The Stephanie Plum mystery series that Evanovich still keeps on a shelf in her home office.

every step of the way. Walking through her living room, she points to large cardboard boxes lined up against the wall that are packed with thousands of single pages she will sign for insertion into her latest adventure thriller, The Job, released November 18. “This joint is totally worn away from signing,” Evanovich says, lifting and bending the finger she uses for autographs. In this third and latest installment of the Fox and O’Hare series she penned with coauthor Lee Goldberg, feisty FBI agent Kate O’Hare and the charmingly sexy con man Nick Fox embark on another adventure that transports readers across Europe, including jaunts to Spain, France and England. Evanovich continues to take on coauthors to keep up with her fans’ demands for more books, and her work schedule is as rigorous as ever. “But I don’t work past eight o’clock [at night]. I know that’s a long day because I get up at five,” she says with a laugh, acknowledging that she has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. “The thing about success is you either move forward or backward; there’s no standing still. Success is addictive and you kind of get caught up in it. I hadn’t thought about that until I was deep into it.” Evanovich, who appears decades younger than her 71 years, grew up in South River, New Jersey, a small blue-collar town that was bustling with a patchwork of Eastern European immigrant families. In peekaboo moments, her bright blue eyes widen with girlish wonder as she recalls the childhood memories that have shaped her. “It was an amazing community filled with very hardworking people,” she says. “You kept your house clean and your yard tidy. If you made an apple pie you cracked your window so your neighbor could smell it, so she knew you were making your own and not buying it in the store. It was ingrained in me that this is how you live and what you do. The philosophy was, we’re working hard so our children can have a better life. That’s what really drives me.” Raised by a factory-worker father and homemaker mother, there wasn’t much money for books as a child. But her mom, an avid reader, would take her to the library once a week to check out a book. “That was a big deal,” Evanovich says. “The rest of the time I read comic books. I had boxes and boxes of comic books.” Her favorites were Little Lulu, the Donald Duck Adventures with

064-feat evanovich-1214.indd 67

Huey, Dewey and Louie, and Uncle Scrooge, which she credits with inspiring her love of a good adventure. “The bad guys would be after them, and Scrooge would take his treasure and put it in a big cement vault in Duckburg and push his coins around with a bulldozer,” Evanovich says. “This is what I aspired to be: Scrooge McDuck, pushing all my gold around with a bulldozer.” Little did she know she would ultimately pave a path to find her own proverbial pile of gold; it would just take a few decades to get there. First, Evanovich would marry her high school sweetheart, Pete, and set out to start a family. As her husband was earning a doctorate in mathematics, Evanovich helped put him through school with a slew of part-time jobs, from telephone solicitor to “world’s worst waitress” at the local Howard Johnson’s. “I never made any tips and came home every night smelling like fried clams,” she says with a huge grin. “It was really bad.” Evanovich had majored in fine arts, and after college became a painter. Ultimately, she realized they couldn’t afford the paint, the pigment made her break out in a rash and, well, she probably wasn’t going to make much money at it anyway. As they were raising their two children, Alexandra and Peter, Evanovich quickly morphed into “Earth mother.” “We decided that we would do without fancy cars and furniture, and I would stay at home with the kids,” she says. “I made everything from scratch because we couldn’t afford to go out to eat. I made my own bread, sewed my daughter’s dresses. We ate every meal together and it was a good time in my life.” But as her kids went off to school and her husband was out in the workforce (as a university professor and later working in a think tank as a civilian for the U.S. Navy), Evanovich decided to put her free time and creativity to use by writing books. The more she wrote, the more she loved it. She thought it would be easy. She would be rich and famous in no time. After about a decade, though, the aspiring writer still had published nothing. She felt discouraged but not deflated. “By then, my kids and Pete were all saying, ‘I know you’ve been trying this for 10 years and we can’t afford sneakers but you can do it, Mom! You keep doing it. You’ll do it,’” says Evanovich, who warms up instantly when speaking about family. She began writing short romance novels—positive, happy pieces. Finally, pay dirt. The young author sold her first little book for $2,000, NAPLESillustrated.com | DECEMBER 2014

and a few more book contracts followed. The deals were sporadic, though. She came to the realization that she was on the right road—just stuck in the wrong lane. The publishers would put out a certain number of books, and when they were gone, that was it. There was no backlist. “I had a good audience but I couldn’t really grow,” Evanovich says. “I decided that it wasn’t enough to be an artistic person, that if you really wanted success as a writer you also had to be a businessperson.” She marveled at the popularity of Tom Clancy’s military thrillers. With the instincts of an entrepreneur, Evanovich recognized it was because he found a hole in the marketplace that no one was filling. And if he could do it, then she could, too. “I saw women moving into mysteries with female protagonists, but they were really men in women’s clothing,” Evanovich says. “I thought, I can make a hybrid; take what women love about romance and squash it into a mystery-adventure format. So while they were writing hardboiled women detectives, I came out with my soft-boiled. It was an instant success. It had a little sex, a little romance, a lot of action and funny characters. I found my own little hole in the marketplace.” The Stephanie Plum series was born in 1994. One for the Money, the first in what has become a 21-book series, attracted a million-dollar movie deal. The determined author was finally well on her way to fame. “The movie deal allowed us to really change our life,” Evanovich says. “My husband had accomplished a lot of what he wanted in his career and my kids were out of college.” They established a family business, Evanovich Inc., with Pete managing it. Their son, Peter, is now his mom’s agent and he handles all the financials and foreign sales. Alexandra (who goes by Alex) serves as liaison to all of the publishers and oversees advertising copy, television scripts, the author’s website and social-media presence. Evano vich has more than 600,000 fans on Facebook alone. When the family decided it was time (and they had enough money) for a vacation home, they began taking trips to Florida to find the perfect winter escape. “We drive into the town of Naples and I see big-box stores, like Target, Costco and Wal-Mart, and I’m getting excited,” Evanovich says. “Then we pass Waterside Shops and there’s stuff here and it’s beautiful with palm trees and white sand beaches. That was it. We rolled into town and got a realtor.” It would take two more annual trips before they decided on a home in Port Royal. They made the move in 2004, and Naples went from a vacation home to a permanent residence. “The Port Royal Club gave us an instant community,” says Evanovich, whose children also bought homes in the neighborhood. “Pete started playing tennis, and he got a lot of guy friends who invited him to play golf. It was an easy existence for us and allowed me to take on more writing.”

Left: the author’s home theater. Above: part of the waterfront view from the home’s lanai where Evanovich takes a break from work to enjoy a glass of wine with pete, her husband of 50 years.

Her rapid-fire pace came to a sobering halt two years ago, though, when her newly married son was diagnosed with leukemia at age 40. Earth mother resurfaced with steel will. There was no question she would double down on what was most important: her family. Evanovich searched for the best specialists she could find and checked her son right into Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “We loaded Peter onto a plane that October, and I didn’t come home until December,” she says. “We rented an apartment right across from the hospital and stayed with him 24 hours a day. This is why you work hard and make this kind of money. We were able to fly him back and forth only because I could afford to charter him a private plane when he couldn’t fly commercial.” She even had her personal chef prepare special meals that were loaded into coolers and flown to him. After a bone-marrow transplant in March the following year, Peter made a complete recovery and went back to work. “He’s healthier than I am now,” she says, shifting her shoulders up with pride. “We’re a very competitive family; we compare platelets.” Today, even when the phone starts ringing and deadlines are looming, at least twice a day she sits down at the table across from Pete to share a meal that her chef prepares in their home. Often her children will drop by to join them. “When you have a chef, you see your kids a lot,” she says with a chuckle. And then there’s date night with Pete on the weekends. It is this connection to family that fuels her. Even with all the fame and fortune, Evanovich says it took many years to see herself as a writer, much less a businessperson. “I think today I still struggle with it,” she says. “At heart, I’m still that very traditional blue-collar housewife. My grandparents came here from Denmark without a penny and worked very hard. My parents were the first to graduate high school, and I was the first to graduate from college, which was a big deal. And here I am, living in Port Royal. I am the American dream.” « NAPLESillustrated.com | DECEMBER 2014

10/30/14 4:45 PM

Evanovich Uncut THE UNGLAMOROUS LIFE: I’m not as social as most people in the community because I’m a working girl and I have my family … that’s my world. I don’t have time for a pedicure, so I almost never wear sandals. I don’t fuss with my hair and never wear makeup. When service people come to the house, they always think I’m the maid. HARD-EARNED LESSON: Financial success and personal success are two entirely different places of happy. I’ve always had a certain amount of personal success because I was fortunate to find a man I love, who has always stayed my best friend. I have great kids. I always thought life would be perfect if I were rich and famous, then I became rich and famous and realized it was more difficult to have personal happiness because I was always working. ON COAUTHORS: I couldn’t keep writing as many books as my fans wanted. I had no life. Working with coauthors lets me have a little more life and more books, so fans are happy and my husband’s happy. BOOK TOURS: My publisher pays for part of it, but doesn’t pay for all the private-plane expense; that’s something I pick up. I can’t have 2,000 people waiting in a bookstore when an airline decides not to fly. It’s a crummy thing to do to people who drive for hours or take days off from work to be there. FANS RULE: When I go on tour, the rule is if you can’t afford to buy a book, bring one from home or bring a bar napkin, I don’t care. If you want to come say hello, you can come say hello. I’ve had signings go from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. I don’t leave until the last person leaves. WRITERS’ tip: Write every day and find a time of the day when it’s your job. Even if you already have a full-time job, if you took a part-time job you’d show up for two hours even if it was inconvenient or you would be fired—so why is writing any different? HOW SHE GETS UNSTUCK: I drink a lot. (Laughs.) Two glasses of wine and a bag of chips and I am just so creative. I am happy. FAVORITE BOOK: I don’t have one, but if I did it would be Uncle Scrooge comic books. I write adventure stories and I think I’m writing Scrooge McDuck. That was my most important literary experience. SECRET SAUCE: People buy my books because I make them laugh. I write about good people who are flawed, but they’re there for each other. They have a sense of community and family, whether it’s one they create or have been born into. There’s an element of sexual adventure, a chase. And they end well. I try not to make people cry. ON POLITICAL CORRECTNESS: I don’t buy into it. I don’t get it. I was raised with common sense and kindness, and when you try to replace those two with political correctness, it just doesn’t work. WHERE IDEAS COME FROM: What I find is if you put your ass in the chair, something will happen. Sometimes I get four sentences on the screen and sometimes I get 10 pages, but I always get something. I start with a germ of an idea and use my white board like a storyboard. I know what the crime is and how it will begin and end. Then, I start writing.

FOR THE LOVE OF GIRAFFES: My grandson, Maxwell, loves the giraffes at the Naples Zoo. As soon as he could hold a lettuce leaf, he started feeding them. So giraffes have become an important part of my life and so has the Naples Zoo. I have two giraffe pictures now; they inspire me. NAPLES IN NOVELS: In Takedown Twenty, a giraffe escapes while en route to the Naples Zoo and is running around Trenton, New Jersey. In the second book from the Barnaby and Hooker series about a NASCAR driver and his female mechanic, they go to Naples. And my coauthor Lee Goldberg wrote Naples into our first book, but Naples wasn’t looking so good. It was filled with crime and the people were a little snooty, so I changed it from Naples to West Palm Beach. I decided I’d stick it to the East Coast. GUILTY PLEASURE: A good glass of wine. I like New Zealand whites and California reds. I’m always on the hunt for a bargain in a red. I like to top off at about $18. When you can knock off half a bottle in a night because you’re not feeling expired, you don’t want to spend $80. My go-to red right now is Conundrum, an inexpensive blend. proudest moment: My son’s illness because when Peter was diagnosed with leukemia, everybody just instantly came together. I watched what it took to stay positive when you had a life-threatening disease. That’s when you understand the kind of strength you’ve helped your family to have. I’m very proud of my family. NEXT CHAPTER: Our publication schedule is four books a year, one I write myself and the rest are with coauthors. We also have two television shows in pre-production based on the Plum series and the Fox and O’Hare series, but no timelines. FEELING LUCKY: I was very lucky to find something I was good at that other people wanted, and that I loved to do. I could have easily ended up working the box machine at the Tampax factory, but by the grace of God, I decided I could write books. words to live by: If you have a dream, don’t give up. It’s hard work; keep working at it. FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN NAPLES: Special occasions: The Grill Room at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples and Capital Grille. Date night: Bleu Provence, Café Lurcat, and then Truluck’s, because it has Bollinger by the glass, my favorite Champagne. We used to go to Barbatella, but there is live music there now and it’s loud. Pete loves the food, but we have to be able to talk. If they would just tone down the music a little bit, we could have date night there again. Breakfast: Jane’s Café is our favorite weekend place. Best burgers: I love sitting outside on the porch at Ridgway Bar & Grill for a burger and watching the world go by. I also love Avenue5’s burger, because it’s got all this junk on top of it, like mushrooms, cheese and sauce. «

The philosophy was we’re working hard so our children can have a better life. That’s what really drives me.

BEAVER CREEK, COLORADO GARY AND KATHY BIGHAM “We have a home in Beaver Creek that we enjoy as often as possible,” says Kathy Bigham, co-owner of Bigham Jewelers in Naples with her husband, Gary. “Every day at 3 p.m. the ski resort brings out warm cookies to the base of the mountain. The kids love that!” Their children Brie, 17, and Chase, 14, have joined them over school breaks for the nine years they’ve owned the home in Beaver Creek to ski and snowboard. “We’re just skiers, though,” she says. “Gary has been skiing all his life and is quite accomplished. I started 10 years ago and keep pretty much to the blue and green runs,” Kathy says. Favorite ski and lodging resort: Beaver Creek Resort Preferred ski gear: K2 skis and Bogner skiwear Après ski: The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, where you can ski in, sit by the fire or listen to live music on the deck Where to fuel up: Breakfast at the Alpine Club Best restaurants: Moe’s Barbeque for the kids and Grouse Mountain Grill for grown-ups Favorite ski run: Arrowhead Mountain runs—few crowds with the mountain to yourself Don’t-miss experience: Horse-and-sleigh ride to the top of Beaver Creek Mountain to dine at Zach’s Cabin 78

December drifts across the mental map with visions of mittens, ski slopes and Cognac by the fire. Time to start planning that winter ski excursion to escape the flatlands of Florida for a favorite mountain range. Or perhaps it’s time to find a new skiing destination. Some of Naples’ most avid skiers point us downhill to their favorite slopes with tips on what to pack and what to do while you are there.

Badrutt’s Palace Hotel

The Collinses are avid skiers who have hit the slopes from Colorado to South America, Australia and Europe, says Greg Collins, president and clinical manager of Collins Physical Therapy Institute in Naples. He and his wife, Angela, are both trained physical therapists; she is self-employed in the home health arena. “European skiing is entirely different from skiing the Western United States,” says Greg. “Out West, you have that nice, fluffy, low-humidity snow—it’s the best in the world. In Europe, you have to be a better skier, although St. Moritz has the best snow in Europe. You have to be able to edge. You’ve got to carve on those icy slopes.”

Alain Sleigher

Ray DeAngelis is a fan of crowd-free skiing. He recently chose Revelstoke, British Columbia, for a ski vacation. “It’s fairly new and not well-known, but anybody who really knows skiing has heard of it,” says DeAngelis, a Naples real estate investor, commercial property developer and owner of Staybridge Suites. “The resort is not real glitzy, but the skiing is phenomenal. Snow Magazine rated it among the top 10 in the world in 2014.” Perhaps what he likes best about Revelstoke, however, is that it provides easy access to get even farther away on a heli-skiing adventure at a small, private lodge 100 miles north. Every day for four days, the helicopter pilot lifted DeAngelis’ group of four plus a guide to the top of a mountain. They skied down with avalanche gear in backpacks, got picked up, and repeated the sequence until the day wore out, or they did. When not escaping the crowds, DeAngelis hits Vail, because he also enjoys bowl skiing.

Ginny DeMas has skied all over Europe, having lived in Geneva, Switzerland, for more than nine years back in the early 1980s. Her pick of ski resorts today? Most often Vail, Colorado. Now that she and her husband, Mike, have sold their telemarketing and Web design firm in Fort Myers, the Naples couple takes advantage of more free time on the slopes. Despite Vail’s plethora of resort lodging options, they typically rent a nearby condo, “because when traveling with friends or family it allows you the flexibility to spend time together in front of a fire or go out to a restaurant,” says Ginny. They also rent their skis, she adds, partially because of the difficulties flying with their own, but also for a different reason: “Technology changes so rapidly it makes sense to rent and allows us to try various types of skis.” Favorite ski resort: Vail Recommended vacation rental website: Vacation Rental by Owner (VRBO) Preferred ski gear: Obermeyer and Columbia skiwear; Tecnica and Salomon ski boots Après ski: Bart & Yeti’s—fun atmosphere; lots of the locals hang out there Favorite restaurant: La Bottega, serving everything from great pizza to Colorado trout Where to fuel up: Lunch on the mountain at The 10th restaurant; great food, wonderful ambience, and warm, comfy slippers so you can leave your boots in the locker area Favorite ski run: The challenging Sweet N Sour run in the China Bowl; easy access off the lift and fabulous views Other recommended activities: Snowshoeing for a different perspective of Vail; shopping at Vail Village

Colleen and Kirk Kvetko strapped on downhill skis for the first time at age 50. That was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, 10 years ago. They took a day of lessons and skied in powder up to their knees, remembers Colleen, the president of private banking at First Florida Integrity Bank in Naples. Today, she and her husband, a retired insurance executive, own a condo in Park City, Utah. They ski Deer Valley, which was the venue site for the 2002 Olympics ski jump and consistently ranks high in SKI magazine’s annual best resort ratings. They still consider themselves intermediates. “We don’t do blacks [black diamond runs] yet. I like my hips and knees intact,” says Colleen, who admits to being a “freeze baby … hand warmers, butt warmers, long underwear and toe warmers. Not to mention I have six ski outfits to choose from. My husband, Kirk, tells me I have a problem. I only have one set of ski boots, though. I am always bundled from top to bottom.”

Favorite ski resort: Deer Valley; it doesn’t allow snowboarders, who can make skiing difficult for learners Recommended lodging: The St. Regis Deer Valley—a ski-in, ski-out resort Preferred skiwear: Spyder jackets and ski pants, Oakley goggles, North Face or Columbia gloves Favorite ski run: The Jordanelle, a long, narrow, fast and challenging run Where to fuel up: Stein Erickson Lodge for Sunday brunch Favorite restaurants: Ruth’s Chris Steak House at Hotel Park City; Blind Dog & Sushi and Zoom Restaurant in Park City; Ghidotti’s in Redstone Village, a local shopping center Après ski: The St. Regis, which has an outdoor fire pit Other recommended activities: Sundance Film Festival in January, walking Main Street in the snow, and snowshoeing and snowmobiling on Strawberry Reservoir «

Spain to Naples

101-Taste Opener-1214.indd 101

Taste

Like the holidays, tapas are about sharing with others. Still, we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to keep this dish all to yourself. Lamoraga, the sleek Spanish restaurant on U.S. 41, puts a modern spin on the concept of Spain’s traditional little dishes. Its Tartar de Atun (tuna tartare) complements diced ahi tuna with tropical notes of mango, avocado and crispy plantain dressed with a Florida-infused citrus vinaigrette. A tradition the Naples restaurant maintains is drinking good wine with food. “We would pair this dish with a Licia Albariño from Rias Baixas, a Spanish white wine,” says Hanaë Regnard, Lamoraga’s manager. —Kat Smith

nspired by the frosty scenery in the wildly popular animated film Frozen, Sebastien Thieffine, executive pastry chef at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, crafted this exquisite winter holiday “dessertscape” out of sugar and chocolate. In all, about 25 pounds of a half-dozen types of sugar were cooked, reshaped and transformed into a frozen lake, fluffy snow and delicate snowflakes. It seems Santa left his footprints on these snowy surroundings in a pair of boots created by the chef in cheery red and white fondant. Ornaments sculpted in chocolate and airbrushed with red and blue cocoa butter are capped with shiny sugar painted with real gold and silver. Flaky puff pastries arranged in the shape of snowflakes complete the sweet motif.

CHILDHOOD FOOD MEMORY: My nonni—my Italian grandmother. I remember walking into her apartment and she’d have sauce cooking on the stove and homemade wine. There were clotheslines hung with pasta. It’s kind of the Italian grandmother cliché, but that’s really how they do it. FOOD + TRAVEL: The Naples National Golf Club sent me to Europe, California and other places to go eat. It’s how I learned. My favorite travel food memories are from my three weeks in Bourgogne. That was the most incredible experience. HOLIDAY FANTASY FEAST: Every Christmas I do a feast. I cook for 24 hours—everything from roasted goose to baklava. It’s very classic. I cook for 15 to 20 people. They bring the wine, I cook the food. Roasted duck is a must, plus lamb, shrimp and calamari. FOOD HEROES: I met Jack Shoop at the CIA, a certified master chef— there aren’t many of those around. He took me from where I was to where I wanted to go with my cooking. He taught me the classics. My heroes are the old-school French guys—Escoffier and [other classic cooks], and Thomas Keller, Mario Batali and Jean-Louis Palladin. LATEST COOKING PASSIONS: Desserts and homemade charcuterie.

From his childhood with his Italian grandmother, to classic French chef mentors, to his current executive chef position at HobNob, Chef Tony Biagetti has lived and breathed food all his life. His first kitchen job was washing dishes in a Friendly’s restaurant in New Jersey. While working for Marriott in Somerset, also in New Jersey, a manager excited him with information about the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), from which Biagetti graduated in 1989. Biagetti followed a career mentor to Naples’ Bay Colony Beach Club in 1991 as executive chef. Later he went to the prestigious Naples National Golf Club. HobNob’s owner, Michael Hernandez, discovered Biagetti when Hernandez opened Handsome Harry’s on Third Street South, where Biagetti was executive chef. Hernandez brought Biagetti along to his current restaurant in the spot on Fifth Avenue South where Hernandez formerly owned Zoe’s. Here, Biagetti shares thoughts about travel, family and other influences on his cuisine. —Chelle Koster Walton

Mereday’s spicy smoked duck wings and Guinness bloody Mary

Coconut Point in Estero has upped its foodie status with a couple of newcomers. Enterprising chef Charles Mereday opened his third area restaurant in a little more than a year, Mereday’s Brasserie, in the space that formerly housed The Grill Room. It joins Mereday’s Fine Dining and Alto Live Jazz Kitchen in Naples in the chef’s portfolio. The casual yet elegant wood-paneled restaurant pours a wide variety of craft brews (after all, brasserie is French for brewery), wines and cocktails to complement French-inflected cuisine. Standouts include spicy smoked duck wings, French onion soup, bouillabaisse and snapper en papillote. Don’t pass on dessert—the crème brûlée has a perfect glassy layer of caramelized sugar atop the cream, and a puffy peach tarte is topped with lavender ice cream. (meredaysbrasserie.com) Also scheduled to open this month near the Hollywood Theaters is The Brass Tap, an upscale craft-beer bar. In addition to more than 200 beers—with 75 to 80 on draft—the restaurant will offer beer-friendly foods from sandwiches, wings and pizzas to specialty tacos and salads. What’s more, a variety of live entertainment, such as local bands and game nights, are also on tap. (brasstapbeerbar.com) —Kat Smith

Pop a Good Year Ring in 2015 with a special treat—a bottle of vintage Champers By Mark SPivak

Champagne lovers tend to gravitate toward the ends of the spectrum, choosing nonvintage brut or rosé for everyday consumption, and the occasional luxury cuvée (Dom Pérignon, Cristal or La Grande Dame) brought out for life’s special moments. Vintage Champagne frequently gets overlooked in the middle. It is true that the luxury cuvées are vintagedated, but beyond those, it’s rare to see enthusiasts popping a bottle of bubbly that contains grapes from a single year.

Far fewer vintage bottles are available, of course, since most of a producer’s grapes will go into making the nonvintage bottling. In addition, most nonvintage offerings are pretty good these days, as they are carefully sourced and blended and acquire depth and balance from the inclusion of reserve wine from older years. Simply put, a vintage year needs to be almost spectacular to be listed on the label. One year that falls into that category is 1990, but vintage bottles from that year are currently

hard to find. Among other recent vintages, the standouts are 1998 (excellent in both quantity and quality), 2002 and 2003 (notable for their ripeness), 2004 (good balance of fruit and acidity) and 2006 (aromatic, with a great deal of finesse). Given that many vintage Champagnes start in the $60 range—compared with $40 to $50 for the nonvintage version—why not treat yourself when you find one that has been carefully stored? Following are some of the notable buys on the market worth seeking out.

CV-Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte

Nicolas Feuillatte: France’s best-selling Champagne is also popular in this country thanks to its remarkable price-to-quality ratio, whether you choose the entry-level bottle or the declared vintage. The current standout is the 2004 Blanc de Blancs ($60), a wine made exclusively from Chardonnay, filled with bright flavors of lemon, apple and pear. As it ages, this Champagne becomes rich, unctuous and honeyed, infused with flavors of vanilla and bread dough.

The vintage bubbles from Nicolas Feuillatte, the top-selling Champagne in France, are a good value.

The 2002 PiperPiper-Heidsieck: Founded in 1785 by Florens-Louis Heidsieck Rare Heidsieck, Piper is one of the oldest Champagne houses. It would be an is also the best known of the three Heidsieck Champagnes. appropriate pick for a special (The other two are Charles Heidsieck and Heidsieck Monocelebration. pole.) The 2004 Brut ($65) is crisp yet delicate, with refreshing citrus flavors and pinpoint acidity. Even better is the exceptional 2002 Piper-Heidsieck Rare ($180), blended from 17 select vineyard sites and matured for more than seven years in the house’s cellars. Beautifully concentrated, it combines exotic flavors of kiwi and passion fruit with intense minerality and purity.

Moët & Chandon, the most popular brand on the planet, offers a number of vintage wines.

Moet & Chandon

Moët & Chandon: The world’s leading Champagne brand has a lot to offer in the vintage category. The recently released Grand Vintage 2006 ($70) is fresh and full-bodied, with mouth-watering acidity and flavors of citrus and vanilla paired with a hint of red fruits. The Grand Vintage Rosé 2004 ($85) offers an explosion of fresh raspberry and wild strawberry in the mouth, framed by strong suggestions of tannin.

Still craving that luxury cuvée? Consider the Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque (formerly known as Fleur de Champagne, or Flower Bottle). The 2002, 2004 and 2006 vintages sell for $150. This is rich, profound Champagne that can accompany a meal, displaying great depth of flavor in its layers of brioche, vanilla and toast. Chardonnay fans

And if you are ever lucky enough to experience the 2000 Dom Pérignon Rosé ($375), filled with haunting flavors of strawberry and red raspberry, you’ll likely remember it to the end of your days. «

Balance Zen

Finding

If the holiday hustle and bustle has you spinning in stress, meditation can be an effective way to tamp down anxiety, according to research published earlier this year in JAMA Internal Medicine. Think you don’t have the time or patience? Not so fast. Mobile apps make it quick and easy, even if you only have five minutes to spare. With the Mindfulness app (mindapps.se), there are many silent and guided meditations, plus you can set up reminders to meditate (or even just take a deep breath!) at specific times, locations and days of the week. Headspace (headspace.com/headspace-meditation-app) is a subscription service that you can test for free and learn the basics of meditation for 10 minutes a day over 10 days. Love it? Subscribe for countless meditations, and even special series that allow you to focus on health, performance or relationships. You can also track progress and keep stats on yourself and friends using the service. The simplest app is aptly named Simply Being (meditationoasis .com/smartphone-apps), and offers guided meditations from five to 30 minutes, including a choice of music or nature sounds. Just two clicks and you’re off to a state of inner peace. —Anna Bjorlin

Healthy Stocking Stuffers

This holiday season we’re sharing a handful of products that the health-minded and fitness buffs on your list just might love to find tucked in their stockings

Do your loved ones always forget to reapply sunscreen in the scorching Southwest Florida sun? Never again, if you give them the stylish June wrist wrap by Netatmo, along with the companion iPhone app. Think of it as a gift of high-tech sunscreen. The device serves as a bracelet of sorts that measures sun exposure throughout the day and wirelessly communicates it to your phone. When you’re in danger of getting burned, you'll receive text alerts plus personalized sun-protection advice based on the UV levels at that very moment. You’ll even be reminded when it's time to cover up and put your hat and sunglasses back on. (netatmo.com)

Dr.’s Remedy Enriched Nail Care, formulated by doctors, is the only nail polish to receive the American Podiatric Medical Association seal of approval. The stylish line contains nourishing tea-tree oil, lavender, wheat protein and vitamins, but none of the formaldehyde, resin and other chemicals that can be found in traditional polish. “The polish is part of my protocol for the ladies,” says Jamie Weaver, a podiatrist at the Joint Replacement Institute in Naples, who carries the line. “I always have them use it as a protective measure because of the tea-tree oil in the formula, which acts as an antifungal preventive.” With more than 30 highgloss shades to choose from, the polish can be found at many podiatrist offices locally and online. (remedynails. com) —Anna Bjorlin

No matter what sport they’re obsessed with, your beloved weekend warriors and endurance athletes will want to try RockTape, which helps manage fatigue, improve performance and speed recovery. When placed over a stretched muscle, the waterresistant tape improves blood flow, and you can wear it for up to five days. Plus, unlike other products, you can use it on hard-toreach areas like shoulders and knees. RockTape can be found locally at the Naples offices of Dr. Kyle Nevius (drkylenevius.com, 239398-9863) and Bechtol Chiropractic & Endermologie Center (doctornikki.com, 239-3528633), and in a variety of sizes and colors at rocktape.com.

Nourish your skin and sink into pure relaxation with One Love Organics body serums, which come in four aromatic scents: rose, chamomile, lavender and neroli. The light, nongreasy spray serums contain a moisturizing blend of organic plant oils, including sea buckthorn and pumpkin seed (which contains beneficial omega-6 essential fatty acid) that soften the skin and deliver a delicate scent that lingers for hours. (oneloveorganics.com)

Active adventurers who always seems to lose track of time will want to consider one of these fashionable slap-style watches from Paris, France-based Bill’s Watches found at BR Uno in Naples. You can run, jump and even swim with them without worry. Along with a two-year warranty, the watches come in two sizes and dozens of bright colors and patterns. We love the bold coastal blue and vibrant red for the holidays, plus you can add a little sparkle with Swarovski crystals. (239-261-9806)

Spread the Love

Get your foot measured for length & width prior to buying shoes every year. PLatelet Rich Plasma inj. available for achilles / heel pain to avoid surgery. Betsy Opyt

Eating clean, natural and organic food is important to Naples resident and dietitian Betsy Opyt. As an avid lover of nut butters and spreads, Opyt and her daughter were fed up with natural nut butters that lacked flavor. Through lots of experimentation and trial-and-error, Opyt created her own line of all-natural gourmet nut butters called Betsy’s Best. Her company offers peanut, almond and seed butters for people with allergies and food sensitivities. “I am very passionate about nutrition, wellness and healthy eating,” says Opyt. “If you are going to eat something, it should provide maximum nutritional benefit.” Betsy’s Best is available at all Whole Foods locations throughout Florida and can be purchased online. Heart Health

The James J. Buonavolonta, M.D., P.A. Cardiac Imaging Center has become the first dedicated Cardiac PET center in Collier County. With only 160 dedicated centers in the world, cardiac PET (positron emission topography) is the most advanced imaging of the heart available and is featured in the top 10 hospitals in America, including the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital. “Its most important feature is that it can detect blocked arteries with a 95 percent accuracy, but it can also assess someone’s risk for open-heart surgery,” Buonavolonta says, noting that the noninvasive stress test requires the least amount of radiation exposure, and helps reduce unnecessary cardiac catheterizations. Balance Sleep Saboteurs The holiday season, with all the shopping and back-to-back parties, can leave you exhausted, so why can’t you stay asleep after you doze off? Following are three ways you may be sabotaging your slumber this season without knowing it. Drinking too much, too late, too often. Alcohol can wreck sleep. We know this, but during the holidays we tend to imbibe more than we normally would, later than we usually do, and more often. What to do? Slow it down, and swap a club soda for that last glass (or two) of wine. Eating too many late-night hors d’oeuvres. Yes, the bite-sized temptations may be calling your name, but remember that heavy, rich foods take a lot of time to digest and spicy or acidic dishes can cause upset stomach and heartburn—all of which can keep you up at night. What to do? Keep your usual dinnertime schedule during the holidays, and avoid snacking at parties, or just choose one bite and make it count. Skipping your workout routine. When we get caught up in the busy season, the first thing that seems to drop off is our regular workouts—but it’s the time when we need the exercise the most. Research has long shown you sleep more deeply when you exercise regularly. Simply put: Don’t skip it. Schedule your workouts as if they were appointments with an important client—you. Remember, sleep deprivation can affect your mood, focus and memory, among other consequences. “Driving impairment and risk of a motor vehicle accident is worse with sleep deprivation than it is with alcohol abuse,” says

Monica Otero Woodward, the medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center of SW Florida. “If you stay up all night, it takes two nights of regular sleep to recover and be fully rested.” Woodward says the best advice for a good night’s rest is to follow the proven standard guidelines: Stick to a set bedtime, turn off all the lights, keep the room cool, cut off caffeine and alcohol early on, and shut down all mobile devices. (Yes, even the phone and iPad on the bedside table.) You’ll be surprised at how refreshed you feel the next morning, ready to take on the season with much more holiday cheer. —A.B.

Art of Giving

The concept of giving is front and center at this time of year. All this month, Gardner Colby Gallery presents “In the Spirit of Giving,” a group show of new and familiar gallery artists during which a portion of sales will be donated to the United Arts Council of Collier County and The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. Owner Nancy Winch had offered the gallery to be the venue for a cocktail party as an auction item in the UAC annual fundraiser. The purchaser of the event is on the board of The Shelter, and is holding a private party this month as a thank you to the board and trustees. “We saw this as an opportunity to help two worthy organizations,” Winch says. During December, 5 percent of art sales will be donated to each of the two nonprofits. (gardnercolbygallery.com)

Cypress Celebration

What began as the Audubon Sanctuary during the 1950s—when logging of an area north and east of Naples led concerned community members to save the bald cypress forest—now stands as the 13,000acre Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. To celebrate its sixtieth anniversary, a Cypress Jubilee event is planned, with special guest Jim Fowler, the professional zoologist who hosted the Emmy Award-winning TV show Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Event highlights include a four-course dinner by Crave Culinaire, walks through the forest, musical entertainment by Naples Philharmonic violinist Jeff Leigh, an art and photo exhibit, and a silent auction. The celebration takes place December 5 at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary; tickets are $200 per person. Proceeds from the event will benefit the restoration, science, advocacy and education programs of the sanctuary. (239348-9151, ext. 113) —O.T.

COMEDY CABARET Issues faced by foster children are no laughing matter, but Neapolitans can have their funny bones tickled while helping brighten the lives of some of these kids at the annual Comedy Cabaret benefiting Friends of Foster Children of Southwest Florida. The evening, fashioned after a Hollywood-style comedy club, will begin with cocktails followed by a light dinner. Silent and live auctions will take place before nationally known comedians Jake Johannsen and Nigel Lawrence get the audience roaring. The show, December 7, will be at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. Dr. Les Schultzel, a founding member of FFC, created the Comedy Cabaret in 2001 with the support of his daughter, a leading talent agent in Los Angeles. Top national comedians perform gratis for the event each year. Funds raised will support the mission of FFC and its many programs to provide abused, neglected and abandoned children in Southwest Florida with social, educational and financial support the state does Jake Johannsen not. Recipe for Learning

Looking for an interesting way to kick off the holiday season? On December 3, the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida will present Cooking Up Tradition at Quail West Country Club, Naples. The luncheon will feature Jewish family cuisine created from recipes in The Holocaust Survivor Cookbook and the second volume, Miracles and Meals Cookbook. The books were conceived by Joanne and Harvey Caras as a way to raise funds for the Carmei Ha’ir soup kitchen in Jerusalem. The books now also offer a way for other Jewish groups and Holocaust museums to raise funds. Each includes more than 100 Holocaust survivor testimonies, along with some of their favorite recipes. “The Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida has used the cookbooks as part of a creative educational program called Cooking Up Hope: How Tradition Builds Community,” says Executive Director Amy Snyder. Rosette Gerbosi, a Holocaust survivor who has contributed to the books and is active in the museum’s education programs, is the featured speaker, and her recipe for chocolate mousse cake will be whipped up for dessert. The cookbooks may be purchased for $36 each at the luncheon and at the museum, which receives 30 percent of the sales to benefit its programs. (239-263-9200) —O.T.

Giving BACK

Opening Hearts and Minds When Karla and Larry Phillips’ son, Andrew, 36, was diagnosed with a mental illness nearly eight years ago, their world changed. Seasonal residents of Naples since 2001, the family moved here permanently in 2010. Eager to find a community of support, they discovered the Collier County chapter of NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and were immediately embraced by the staff’s extraordinary kindness. “They were a tremendous help,” Karla says. “NAMI gave us names of By Brian Patrick Eha psychiatrists and psychologists, told us about the Crisis Intervention Teamtrained deputies and provided a great deal of moral support and guidance.” Karla now shares her personal experiences during CIT training, a weeklong program to educate law-enforcement officers on how to most effectively respond to people going through a mental health crisis. She is also on the committee for NAMI’s annual luncheon fundraiser, which supports the nonprofit’s wide range of free programs, from support groups, to informational seminars, to early-education in-school screenings. For nearly five years, the Phillipses have donated their time and money to various NAMI programs, including the Sarah Ann Drop-In Center, which provides a safe and welcoming environment for people with serious mental illnesses to socialize, relax, exercise and participate in group outings. Larry has served on the organization’s board of directors for several years and occasionally acts as moderator for weekly educational events. “NAMI is an extremely important organization for people who can’t afford help on their own,” Larry says. “Financially, mental illness is very expensive, and resources are limited.” Perhaps the most crucial element of NAMI is its ability to bring people together and inspire an open discussion. “One of the things I feel strongly about is the stigma that has been attached to mental illness for so long,” Karla says. “We want people to open up their minds and hearts to the one in four people who are affected by mental illness.” «

NAMI of Collier County’s luncheon, “The Magic Is You,” takes place December 5 at a private Naples club. For information, visit namicollier.org.
