From The publisher

SPIRIT OF GIVING he holiday season absolutely is my favorite time of the year. I love the spirit and energy of it, the memories it leaves us with, the lights, the festive clothes, the food, the gathering of friends and family, and, most of all, the satisfaction of giving. I confess, however, I am not so good at receiving. There are people with whom I’ve been exchanging gifts for decades and, I’m starting to realize, I make it pretty tough on them. I much prefer to think about how I can do something nice for them, and I usually ignore the gentle hints, prodding and questions about what they could do for me. I’ve always been sincere about my priorities—being with the people I love and feeling the warmth of the season in everyone’s merry mood. Opening a package, however lovely, simply has never been that important. I suspect many of you are just like me in that regard. You don’t let people know if you’re still passionate about string quartets or if your taste has moved to bluegrass banjo. Some of us can afford to take a group to Aspen or Big Sky for a week, which makes us feel great—yet we can’t bring ourselves to give a hint about color to someone who might be knitting us a sweater. The truth is, the joy of giving goes both ways. So this year, I’ve resolved to listen better and pick up on those signals. While I fully embrace the teaching that it’s better to give than to receive, and vitally important for those of us with the means to be philanthropic, there is an exception that proves the rule. Allowing others the opportunity to share in the spirit of giving by being truly willing to receive is among the best gifts we can give.

EDITOR’S LETTER

HOME—OR AWAY—FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Dorothea Hunter Sönne dhuntersonne@naplesillustrated.com

A FEW OTHER THINGS I’M EXCITED FOR THIS MONTH: n Shirlene Elkins is the queen of fabulous parties (and one of the sweetest women I’ve met in town); see her masterful skills as the cohost of “Puppy Love” (page 80).

28  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

n If I were staying here, I’d take a cue from designers Rufino Hernandez and Jessica James and deck out my lawn for an unforgettable Christmas dinner (page 44).

n Every year the kid in me looks forward to the life-size gingerbread house at the Ritz-Carlton, Naples. Good thing I’ll be there for the Humane Society’s tea on December 6 (page 132) that i'm helping plan.

VANESSA ROGERS

Y

ear after year when December rolls around, the radio never fails to remind us there’s no place like home for the holidays. With no disrespect to the late, great chanteuse Karen Carpenter, I have to disagree. Sure, I adore Naples, and I love where I grew up, particularly at this time of year: There’s an undeniable magic to sipping cocoa and curling up in front of the fireplace while watching snow fall on cedars and deer roam past. But there’s also magic to the excitement of trying something new. My husband and I travel like it’s no one’s business. We always have and probably will continue to, even once little ones start making their way into our lives. With our hectic work schedules and the fact that our families live in polar opposite parts of the world (mine in New York, his in Buenos Aires), we’ve come to embrace holiday travel as a perfect way to blend a long vacation with quality family time. So come the 22nd, we’re all off to Paris—the two of us, his mom, my parents, my dad’s sister and her husband—and we’re meeting a few friends there. We can’t wait to stroll the charming Christmas markets, get a taste of authentic bûche de Noël and revel in the City of Light’s festive cheer, including a ride up the sparkling Tour Eiffel. Channeling that same spirit is “Holiday Jackpot” on page 76. I was surprised to learn that Las Vegas, especially the Venetian hotel, becomes a winter wonderland complete with a synthetic outdoor ice-skating rink. This realization already put the gears in my head in motion for next year. And speaking of ice, our scintillating collection of jewelry (“Shining Sea,” page 84) is sure to dazzle. Who says wish lists are just for kids? There is more to covet, from stocking stuffers like Aerin Lauder’s new makeup line (page 40) to a car we hope to find on our driveway wrapped in a giant red bow (page 66), sprinkled throughout our pages as we celebrate the season of giving. But the greatest gift of all—no matter if you’re lounging in your Naples backyard, on a weeklong vacation at the Edgewater Beach Hotel or reading this on a plane far, far away from the Paradise Coast—is the gift of being with people you care about, and I wish that for each of you.

Alpine trees of varying heights are flanked by three small round tables and anchored with a “tree skirt” of fresh hydrangea blooms. Whimsical seaside elements like painted starfish and hand-blown glass sea horse ornaments adorn the yuletide-inspired centerpiece, plus silver-plated phalaenopsis orchids “add shimmer and just the right amount of sparkle,” Hernandez says. A Friend Indeed

Since his cinematic debut in a Golden Globe-nominated role in the 1978 film King of the Gypsies, Eric Roberts has had a prolific career in movies, TV and theater. The actor, who served as Grand Marshal of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Collier County’s annual walk in March, and his wife, Eliza, return to Naples December 7. Roberts, who has publicly addressed the effects of his attention deficit disorder, will speak at NAMI’s Celebration of Friends luncheon at the Hilton Naples. A strong advocate of early mental health intervention for children, Roberts is very impressed with NAMI’s HUGS outreach program, which in partnership with the Naples Children & Education Foundation screens more than 1,000 youngsters annually to address prevention and early identification of mental health problems. —Kat Smith n  You’ve done it all: film, stage, television—which is your preferred medium? I’m glad that we actors can work in all sorts of media nowadays. I love feature films. I love sitcoms and dramatic TV. I like theater and music videos, too. And commercials! n  What are you most proud of? I’ve had some fans make videos that cause me to look at my work with far more appreciation. My dearest accomplishments are our kids, however: Emma Roberts [an actress], [singer/songwriter] Keaton Simons and Morgan Simons [a chef]. I love keeping up with their activities. n  Do you have any talents few people know about that you are willing to share? That’s funny! I’m a very strong swimmer. I can sing a little. I feel I communicate with animals pretty well. n  Anything else you would like to add? I’d love everyone to check out naturalchild.org [a parenting website]—once they do, they’ll see why! We know USS Nemo (239-261-6366; ussnemo restaurant.com) is one of the most dependable places for top-notch seafood, and a recent trip netted us an intro to the tongue-tingling sensation that is pepper jelly. From retro typewriter-printed menus at chic boîtes in New York City to grocery store shelves in the Midwest, spicy jams concocted with crushed chilis and tempered by a touch of sweetness are on fire. Chef Nicolas Mercier, owner of USS Nemo, added pepper-jelly crispy calamari to his repertoire a year ago, and it is a best-seller. “We pride ourselves on making things from scratch, and that includes the jelly. We mix rice vinegar, shishito and red pepper, jalapeños and sugar, and then we add a little sriracha, fresh garlic, and cook it down,” he says. Mix in the milk-tenderized, lightly fried squid with slivers of red onion, olives, seaweed and feta, and voilà, a winning dish. If you fancy trying your own spin, Jacquie’s Jamming (239-514-0087; jacquiesjamming.com) sells both red and green jalapeño pepper jellies online and at Ms. Jacquie’s Trade Center outpost. She, too, makes everything from scratch. For an easy and crowd-pleasing party hit, top crackers with Brie and a scoop of the bright paste; sprinkle on crushed red pepper for an extra kick. She also says the sauces are great for braising chicken and leg of lamb. Still craving dinner party fodder? Stonewall Kitchen (stonewallkitchen. com), a national brand with artisanal roots that’s sold locally at Wynn’s Market (wynnsonline.com) and Swan River Seafood (swanriverseafood.com), has a popular red pepper jelly, along with newer flavors like hot pepper peach jam. Tiny Bubbles Toast the season with fizzy and delicious champers bottled by the leading class of small producers. By Mark Spivak

VIVE L’INDÉPENDANCE! Champagnes from growers like Tarlant, LarmandierBernier and Philipponnat are worth seeking out.

Many American consumers tend to associate Champagne with large commercial brands, and no wonder. Those companies spend a great deal of money on marketing and promotion to create that linkage. In reality there are nearly 20,000 growers in the Champagne region who control close to 90 percent of the land, and 5,000 of those farmers are now bottling their own sparkling wines. “Grower Champagne” is a fairly recent phenomenon, but the trend is expanding. Winemaking facilities are expensive, and many growers simply can’t afford them. Some rely on cooperatives to get their product into bottles. The situation is analogous to Burgundy, where many small landowners have stopped selling their grapes to négociants (French merchants who 56  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

purchase grapes, juice or bulk wine from small farmers, then produce, bottle and market on a larger scale) and are now putting out their own labels. The relative obscurity of grower Champagne in the United States is also a result of the French keeping much of it for themselves—virtually half the bubbly consumed in France comes from small producers. Some grower Champagnes neatly span the gulf between cult and brand. A good example is Drappier, which has owned vineyards since

the early nineteenth century. Perhaps a better case is Philipponnat, a house with roots dating back to 1522, which distributes its sparklers in more than 50 countries. Its Royale Réserve ($50) is rich and full-bodied, a good introduction to the Philipponnat style. For a truly dazzling experience, try the 2002 tête de cuvee, Clos de Goisses ($200). Composed of 70 percent Pinot Noir and 30 percent Chardonnay from a tiny, low-yielding vineyard, it is one of the world’s great Champagnes. Among connoisseurs, Tarlant is known as one of the best sources for this category of Champagne. The family has owned land in the Marne Valley since 1687; Jean-Mary Tarlant and his son Benoît, representing the twelfth generation of the house, oversee the vineyard and cellar work, respectively. to the Cuvée Louis ($95) as “the poor man’s Krug.” Matured in small oak casks prior to the second fermentation, it is intense and concentrated, with honeyed overtones of vanilla—a perfect Champagne for food. One of the best-known labels in this category is Egly-Ouriet, and its NV Brut Tradition Grand Cru ($85) is well worth trying. Produced by Francis Egly from 70 percent Pinot Noir and 30 percent Chardonnay as well, the grapes are sourced from a 20-acre grand cru vineyard in Ambonnay. It reveals surprising depth paired with a style that is fresh, racy and elegant. Other noteworthy wines are made by Guy Charlemagne, owner of 37 acres in the Chardonnay-dominated Côte des Blancs (NV Reserve Brut Blanc de Blancs, $50); Larmandier-Bernier, producing natural wines by biodynamic methods (Tradition Premier Cru Extra Brut, $50); Diebolt-

Vallois, also located in the Côte des Blancs (NV Blanc de Blancs, $45); Marc Hébrart, whose 35 acres are spread over an amazing 65 different vineyard sites in the Marne (Selection Premier Cru Brut, $55). How to identify a grower Champagne? Look toward the bottom of the label, where you’ll find a pair of initials and a number. If the initials before the number are NM (Négociant-Manipulant), the Champagne was made by a large house that may own some vineyards, but buys most of its grapes from growers. If you see CM

Guy Charlemagne Cuvée Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs (above); the Diebolt-Vallois cellar (above left).

(Coopérative-Manipulant) or RC (RécoltantCoopérateur), it means that the grapes have likely come from a small grower but the wine was made by a cooperative. The letters RM (Récoltant-Manipulant) signifies a true grower Champagne. But no matter which effervescent bottle you choose, it will make your holiday bubble over with festive cheer. u

First Class SAIL on With Orion, the thrill of discovery meets the trappings of haute cruising. By Robert Ragaini

The next best thing to owning a megayacht is luxuriating aboard someone else’s. In 2004, Australian Sarina Bratton launched Orion, a 337-foot ship outfitted with 53 cabins, to provide daring sybarites with five-star comfort. Her itineraries around the Asia-Pacific region are known for having an adventurous bent, channeling the spirit of the ship’s namesake mythological hunter. But what sets Orion Expedition Cruises apart is her conviction that affluent travelers want more than trekking remote corners of tribal Papua New Guinea and penguin-viewing in Antarctica. Bratton believes her passengers deserve fine wines and gourmet cuisine, a full slate of spa treatments,

boutique hotel-style accommodations and smart service. “A cruise with Orion is like a luxury safari on the high seas,” she says. One of the most memorable trips on Orion is a journey around the Kimberley region on the northwestern coast of Australia. As part of the trip, numerous options for spine-tingling exploits by Zodiac rubber watercraft or helicopter—and on foot—are offered. Fancy a flight over otherworldly gorges and the massive, beehiveshaped orange and black domes of the Bungle Bungle range? Or a visit to mountain plateaus and crocodile habitats? These are on the menu. Another tantalizing choice is a shore excursion on which passengers are led to an idyllic watering hole where refreshments and music await. On a sightseeing trip to Montgomery Reef and Raft Point, a rocky path leads visitors to a gallery of Aboriginal art. An Orion marine biologist is on hand to explain its significance. In stark contrast, another excursion gets guests white-knuckle close to a roaring waterfall while floating on a rubber raft. Any hint of trepidation is wiped out by the exhilaration of the adventure. When not out and about on a heart-thumping escapade, the grandeur of the Orion pampers to the max. The atmosphere aboard the ship is intoxicatingly rich: Carefully chosen works of art complement the fine wood and thick carpet of the reception area, and a glass elevator graces a vessel-high atrium. The light and airy feeling belies the ship’s reinforced steel makeup, safe enough to maneuver through choppy tropical waters and brave the ice-filled Southern Ocean. At 345 square feet, the four Owner Suites are Orion’s largest. Amenities expected in a top-of-the-line hotel but not typically on an expedition cruiser include flat-screen televisions, designer toiletries, DVD/CD players, Internet access, plush robes and 24-hour

After landing a corporate job programming in his 20’s, Randy quickly became successful and bored. He began partying recklessly and got hooked immediately on cocaine. His family intervened and got him into the first of many treatment programs. For the next 20 years, Randy cycled through stunning professional successes in software company and real estate sales and life-threatening drug use that brought him to the brink of suicide. When he discovered a passion for acting, he was inspired to finally get clean and was admitted to the Crossroads residential treatment program. For him, the transformation was a life-changing miracle. Now living one day at a time towards his dream, Randy has become the person he has always wanted to be.

His Mind is Our Concern. Mental health is a community issue. Fortunately, there’s a community solution. Randy is among one in four in Collier County who suffer from a mental illness. One in nine of us will experience some form of substance abuse. When a family member, friend or coworker battles a mental health or substance abuse problem, we suffer with them. Thankfully, David Lawrence Center is here for our community. A not-for-profit organization founded and still governed by community leaders, the David Lawrence Center is the behavioral health component of our community’s healthcare network. A true local resource, it relies on donations, fees and grants to invest in the health, safety and wellbeing of our community. RETURN OF THE VANQUISH Aston Martin resurrects a much-Missed name for its new flagship. BY HOWARD WALKER

Where’s the soul in alphanumericals? Announce to friends that you’re the proud owner of a new F458, and chances are they’ll think you bought a toaster rather than the latest bloodcurdling Ferrari. “What do you think of my new CL65?” “Wow. Can you watch the Golf Channel on it?” Not the response you want after dropping $211,000 on Mercedes’ big and brash 620-horse luxe coupe. That’s why I love Aston Martin’s latest Vanquish supercar. Vanquish—to defeat or conquer in battle, according to the dictionary. To crush or overpower. Just exhaling the word raises all those little hairs on the back of my neck. “Wanna ride in my new Vanquish?” “Hell, yeah.” Of course, this isn’t the first Vanquish to emerge from the fabled British sports-car maker. Back in 2001, the then all-new Vanquish was the baddest, boldest, most brutal Aston Martin ever, a thundering 514-horsepower projectile that lived to Die Another Day in 2002 with Pierce “007” Brosnan behind the wheel. Sadly, production ceased in 2007, and while its successor, the DBS, was a more suave and sophisticated animal, it never exuded the raw, license-to-thrill character of the Vanquish. 66  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

This new version—base price $282,000 and change—recaptures much of the soul and stamina of the original. Its coachwork takes its cues from Aston’s $1.5 million One-77 hand-built supercar. Only 77 of those were built and sold, and they had some of the most sensuous curves this side of Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks. There’s also substance to the new Aston’s style, with a body fashioned from lightweight, superstrong carbon fiber. It contributes to the car’s 25 percent increase in torsional rigidity and 150-pound weight loss over the DBS. The car’s big 5.9-liter V-12 is essentially carried over from the “S,” though it’s been thoroughly reworked with the addition of variable valve timing that’s helped raise horsepower from 510 to 565. Surprisingly, Aston has stuck with the tried-and-tested sixspeed ZF automatic for the new Vanquish, forgoing the latest eight-speed automatic on offer from ZF. One or two hard-driving enthusiasts will lament the dropping of the six-speed manual, but few others (myself included) will care. The big change, however, comes when you slide behind the new square-cornered steering wheel—carried over from the

acceleration is the most fearsome and the soundtrack the most hairraising. But for the most fun, select “Sport” on the new programmable automatic, play up and down games with the instant-on paddle shifters and revel in the thrust. Through the narrow country curves, the Aston feels like a whopper of a car, but its needle-precise steering—thankfully still hydraulically assisted instead of electric—and low-roll cornering gives it an agility that belies its size. You could say it vanquishes every bend it blasts through, conquering and defeating every straightaway. Somehow, badging this car DB10 just wouldn’t sound the same. u

One-77 and thankfully deletable in favor of a traditional circular helm. The cabin has grown in size to offer more shoulder room and leg space. There’s even a tad more room in the trunk. It’s the increase in quality and craftsmanship, however, that you really notice. The quilted Bridge of Weir leather used for the seats is stitched with the precision of an Hermès handbag. Pity, however, it’s all spoiled by the truly awful Garmin-based navigation system, which features graphics by Fisher-Price. But this new Vanquish is all about the driving. And after two days of thrashing along some of Merrie Olde England’s most challenging country lanes, my palms are still sweaty, my pulse still racing. While 565 horsepower is far from excessive in today’s elevated supercar world—the new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta packs an incredible 730 horses—this hairy-chested Vanquish still delivers awesome performance. Sixty comes up from standstill in four seconds, 100 mph in around 9.5. The joy won’t quit until the speedo needle is kissing the 183-mph mark. The big V-12 gives its best from 3,000 to 5,000 rpm, when its

Holiday Jackpot A vacation win-win, four top-of-the-line Las Vegas hotels roll out festivities to delight the most discerning visitors, including the little ones making their lists and checking them twice. By Robert Ragaini

Christmas for the family in Sin City? You bet. Sure, the famous Strip—which is expecting a record 40 million guests in 2012, helped in part by the glittering new terminal that opened in June at McCarran International Airport—still has a bevy of oxygen-pumped casinos, but there’s an entirely different, allgrown-up Vegas today: Its coup de grâce is a bewildering number of luxe spas, Michelin-starred restaurants and shopping to rival Rodeo Drive. Around town starting in late November, the blazing lights will be recast with a seasonal glow as hotels put the house’s money on holiday displays. In the ever-changing landscape that is downtown Vegas, this 1998 Mediterranean-style palace (bellagio.com) is a Grande Dame by the budding metropolis’ lodging standards. But the resort of dancingfountain fame does not rest on its laurels. All 2,568 elegant rooms in the main tower alone were remodeled in 2011 for an estimated tab of $70 million, and innovations from caviar facials at the spa to a sprawling poker salon keep bigwigs playing. The spraying jets lining 1,000 feet of a lake in front of the resort catapult water set to spirited tunes with multiple shows starting at 3 p.m. daily. This fun—given a festive spin with Madonna’s “Santa Baby” or a carol from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir—is just the beginning when ’tis the season to be jolly. In the backyard,

If Las Vegas is the most over-the-top city in the United States, The Venetian (venetian.com), along with its next-door sister, The Palazzo (palazzo.com), is the most extravagant resort complex in Las Vegas. The two all-suite hotels combined have no fewer than 16 fine dining establishments (with James Beard winners like Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse and Thomas Keller behind them) and are linked indoors through their casinos. The principal entrance at The Venetian re-creates its namesake’s Grand Canal, complete with gondolas sailing past. For their second-ever Winter in Venice festival that lasts until January, the hotels boast an ice-free outdoor skating rink steps from the street by the Doge’s Palace Fountain. The Mojave Desert’s fickle temperature swings can bring 60-degree afternoons and then send the mercury plunging below freezing, so the arena out front defies Mother Nature by using a slippery recyclable synthetic polymer to slide and glide (tickets are sold in 30-minute sessions). Puppy Love Kirsten Ferrara and Al Rupp decide the birthday of a beloved pet is the perfect way to celebrate the season with friends. By Kathy Becker | PHOTOGRAPHY BY Peggy Farren AND Helen Catlin

Poodles Spaetzle and Goulash hold an undeniably special spot in Kristen Ferrara’s heart. But since she’s in love with Al Rupp, in deference to his concern about having their home filled annually with guest pooches for Spaetzle’s and Goulash’s birthdays, she promised to only fete each of them every five years. “I was told the dogs need birthday parties,” Rupp says. “However, I was afraid I’d have 28 dogs in the house.” When Spaetzle’s fifth birthday landed just before Christmas last year, Ferrara decided to go above and beyond a normal poodle party. “It was an opportunity for dear friends to get together, look into each other’s eyes, and be grateful for their blessings,” she says. “I wanted for them to stop and smell the roses. I know I’m blessed, so I like to take the time to stop and be grateful. Spaetzle was a unique way to disguise the real focus.” “The dog birthday was a cover-up for a Christmas party,” Rupp says. With smelling the roses in mind, Ferrara included 80  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

A warm, festive setting at Sea Salt restaurant greeted 50 guests who were there to enjoy each other’s company and honor cutie-pie Spaetzle’s big day (near left, with sister Goulash). No detail was overlooked by Ferrara and party co-host, Shirlene Elkins; highlights for attendees were (from far left) a Norman Love dessert, personalized menus and fun favors.

18 rosebud topiary trees to go with the red and white decor of the party for 50 friends on the outdoor patio of Sea Salt restaurant. Ferrara used bright red linens with rose embroidery, personalized ribbons, crystal candles, more than 1,000 balloons, 36-inch candycane-shaped dog bones and hundreds of sparklers. She even decorated the restaurant’s restrooms to celebrate the theme. “When I throw a party, it’s not about party planners, but friends,” Ferrara says. “It’s handmade and homespun. But I don’t have children, so no expense was spared.” Her friend Fabrizio Aielli, owner and executive chef of Sea Salt, whipped up a menu inspired by Spaetzle’s favorites for the 50 attendees, with decadent delights such as short ribs, caviar (plated in the shape of a bone) and foie gras. Norman Love Confections served everyone a paw-shaped caramel bombolina dessert, and friend Shelly Stayer, a partner in Grace & Shelly’s Cupcakes, provided table treats and take-home cupcakes. Another friend, Shirlene Elkins, cohosted the party with Ferrara and helped create the decor, which included an area where people could be photographed with Santa Claus. And there was a surprise—snow, an artificial flurry that appeared as a result of an annual tradition on Third Street South. “We had been working all afternoon, and when we came back at about dusk as the guests were arriving, the snow began to fall,” Elkins says. “We had totally forgotten it was the Third Street South Festival of Lights. It was magical.” “You know how much that cost me?” Rupp says, joking that the snowfall was his doing. Although the party was for Spaetzle, the attendees received personalized gifts from Ferrara. “All our guests understood the spirit of Christmas and being thankful for our blessings,” Ferrara says. “That’s what it was really about.” u

For

Opa and Oma Inspired by childhood Christmases with her grandparents, Cheryl Newberry creates a holiday wonderland for her own children and grandchildren in her Quail West home.

By Kathy Becker Photography by Jerry Rabinowitz

When she was growing up, Cheryl Newberry always helped her grandfather (whom she called Opa, German for grandpa) decorate a 30-foot blue spruce in the front yard of his home in Rochester, New York, for Christmas. Despite the yearly snowfall from October until April, he climbed a ladder every holiday season to adorn the tall tree with lights. Each time they used the old bulbs from Opa’s native Germany, where he came from in 1926. “I have great, fond memories of my grandfather,” Newberry says. “He loved Christmas. He had a big wreath on the door and lights around the window. It was just beautiful.” Her grandfather took her to the city every year to pick out two cut trees, one for her house, and one for his. Her grandmother (Oma) decorated with beautiful things she embroidered, and the house was filled with the smell of German cookies baking in the oven. “The holidays were always fantastic at her house. We’d have goose and potatoes, dumplings and red cabbage,” she recalls. “It was a grand holiday. I have a lot of beautiful, beautiful memories of Christmas.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2012  91

The Newberrys stand amongst Christmas finery on their grand spiral staircase (above). Just to their right is the main tinsel-flecked tree (opposite page). Elsewhere, holiday-themed decor transforms the home into a seasonal spectacle.

Now Newberry makes her own traditions, enlivening her Quail West home with heirloom decorations and new ones she collects. Each year the displays are a little bit different, but she always starts by putting a beaded bell ornament made by her grandmother on her own tree. “I do it for Opa and Oma,” she says. “I think of him being up on that ladder. In Florida, it’s hard to get that feeling unless you have a little more zip, because of the weather.” She starts getting decorations out of her neatly organized storage room—dedicated mostly to Christmas—in November. “I start a week before Thanksgiving,” she says. “If I did it before then, my husband [Richard] would take me to the loony bin. I have it done by the fifteenth or twentieth of November. My husband is not into Christmas at all. 92  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

The dining room is always set to entertain, and granddaughter Annabella helps arrange the winter village on its buffet.

He tolerates it. He knows I love to do it. I don’t golf; I don’t play tennis. I love to decorate. For Easter, the Fourth of July. I’ve got something going on all the time.” Fortunately, the rest of her family is into crafting dazzling holiday displays. Her 82-year-old mother still decorates. Her grandmother kept the traditions going until she passed away at 94 years old. Now Christmas Eve and Christmas Day celebrations include a big dinner and dancing at Newberry’s house. The guest list includes her son and daughter, their spouses, five grandchildren, and her mother. “Our holidays are nice and full,” she says. “Good food, happy times, music.” Newberry puts up two or three trees a year, one of them usually fresh cut. “I love the scent,” she says. “It’s always a different shape every year. tree; it’s just in you after you do it for so many years.” She started collecting decorations when she was newly married, but a fire 20 years ago destroyed many of them, so she started over. In addition to heirloom favorites, she has her own collections of Annalee and Byers’ Choice carolers. But don’t expect to see the exact same arrangement one season to the next. “Every year I get rid of some of the old stuff,” she says. “Every year I buy something. I try not to, but I go to the stores and see cute things. I hold myself back from a lot of it. I also have pieces that are 40 to 45 years old.” A tree in the family room was most recently festooned with candy canes, but in previous years, it was decorated with poinsettias and green ornaments. One year it had cardinals as the primary focus. A big formal tree in the living room was decorated in all gold

for several years until she decided to add some blue. Unable to purchase any more of the gold tinsel, Newberry carefully removes it from the tree to reuse each year. The island in the kitchen offers plenty of space for a large Santa figure, with sleigh and reindeer completing the scene. A buffet in the dining room becomes a snowy village with the help of granddaughter Annabella. Newberry likes to start new traditions, including inviting her two granddaughters over to bake Christmas cookies. “There were sprinkles everywhere, and everything was sticky, but they took cookies home that they made,” she says. “We had a terrific time.” She also shares her holiday love with her neighbors by distributing the many cookies she bakes each year. She even invited the Quail West Women’s Club to celebrate its 10-year cookie exchange NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2012  95

A gorgeous fountain and entry laden with lights welcomes visitors (opposite page). Collectibles old and new can be seen throughout the house, and Newberry rearranges them on a yearly basis to spruce up the scene. She also loves baking and hosted the Quail West community's cookie exchange last year (top right photo).

tradition at her home in 2011 instead of at the community’s club, where it is usually held. The group collected books and pajamas for donating to charity. “Forty women had a sit-down dinner. Dessert was cookies spread on the pool table,” she says. “It was all good, homey stuff.” As much as she loves sharing her decor, Newberry admits having a festive house keeps her spirits high all season. She enjoys quiet moments of twinkling lights and memories. “At night, it’s like a wonderland,” she says. “I’m always sad to take it down, because the house looks so plain.” The Christmas season does end, though, and she has other holidays to consider. “I start boxing things just before New Year’s Day,” she says. “I like to begin the new year with a cleaned up house. By January 2, it’s all done and put away. I start the new year with ‘What’s next?’” u 96  NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

balance LYCHEE Keen ’Tis the season for cocktail parties… and willpower seems to go out the window when hostesses whirl by with trays of drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Lucky for us, we’ve noticed lychees popping up on menus and even in people’s yards, as the soil here is especially conducive to their growth. The native Chinese fruit that looks almost like a large raspberry has a thick red skin; peel it back and underneath you’ll find a sweet and juicy white nibble. Remove that fleshy nut from its tough covering, and you’ve got an excellent source of vitamin C, a boost of B vitamins and minerals, and some experts say, a natural substance that can help prevent cancer. For these reasons, the lychee is considered a superfood and is also why its Chinese name translates to “gift of joyful life.” We’ve got a gift for you on the following pages: little indulgences, including a guilt-free cocktail recipe incorporating this tasty and healthful treat.

Ammonia-based dyes can fry your locks; so can everyday blowouts and styling from gels and sprays laced with chemicals. Thankfully Epiphany Salon & Spa (239-594-1800; epiphany salon-spa.com) relies on the vegan Pureology line, Organic Colour Systems and Max Green Alchemy’s organics. The staff’s methods are so kind to your scalp they’ve developed a loyal following of patients dealing with medical hair loss.

NAILED: A Go-To Manicure Spot The spirit of giving is in the air, and we feel the need to let you in on a secret. Sandwiched in the Pavilion strip mall steps from LA Fitness is a tiny, nondescript, hole-in-the-wall joint, Beautiful Nails & Spa (239-593-3888). It’s nothing to look at (in fact the chintzy decor and worn tile flooring may send some bolting out the door), but the Vietnamese family that owns it is willing to stay open late for women who work, and their careful, diligent handiwork lasts for weeks on end. While we have experienced Madison Avenue salons using real gold-leaf foil, $150 manicures from technicians at five-star hotels and the swankiest of lounge settings, in the end, we just want our nails to look their best while we zip from event to event—and this place has got us covered.

The skinny on this cocktail… An entire cup of fresh lychee nuts weighs in at only 125 calories, and St-Germain is an artisanal elderflower liqueur with a natural sugar content nearly half of other liqueurs (sold at Total Wine, 239-649-4979). With no added sugar or sugar substitutes, this nightcap is a perfect micro splurge for yourself or a house full of guests. Or you can enjoy the Real McCoy at the new Bonita Springs hibachi and raw bar restaurant, Maguro Sushi & Steakhouse (239-591-0003), which has more enticing low-cal yummies, like yellowtail rolls and sea bass with bok choy.

Lychee Martini 1.5 oz. Grey Goose vodka 1 oz. St-Germain 2 oz. fresh lychee juice 1 lychee, peeled 1 mint sprig 1. Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. 2. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. 3. Garnish with a lychee nut and mint sprig. Recipe courtesy of Maguro Sushi & Steakhouse.

DECEMBER 2012 Tea for Two This month two gatherings center on the British tradition of afternoon tea. Both are at The RitzCarlton, Naples and sponsored by Naples Illustrated. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida presents its second annual Tea at the Ritz December 1. The event, which raised $6,500 in its inaugural year, will include the Royal Classic Tea Service, with fine teas, finger sandwiches and other goodies, plus a silent auction. “We are opening it up to men and children—last year it was a ladies’ tea—and we are hosting at a time when the Ritz will be decked out for the holidays,” says Lesley Colantonio of Make-A-Wish of Southern Florida. For information, call 239-992-9474. On December 6, Philip Douglas and Doug Olsen of Philip Douglas Salon, accompanied by their Chihuahua Eva, will co-chair the annual Humane Society Naples tea and fashion show, themed “South of SoHo.” Last year’s edition, the first chaired by Douglas and Olsen, proved their sense of fun and fashion paired with their passion for pets add up to a must-attend party. Fine food and refreshments, such as a welcome glass of bubbly, will be served. There will also be an exclusive fashion presentation by Nordstrom, with local pet lovers as models (including one of our staffers) and pet couture from Pucci & Catana Luxury Pet Boutique sported by furry friends from the Humane Society. New York Times best-selling author Sue Monk Kidd, author of The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair, will be featured as a program participant along with other special celebrity guests. Visit Philip Douglas and Doug hsnaples.org for information. Olsen host the Humane —Kat Smith Society Naples tea with their adorable pup, Eva.

It’s a nice getaway, not far away. For information visit captivaholidayvillage.com. —K.S.

GIVING BACK

MAKING MUSIC By MARISA TORRIERI BLOOM

Alan Korest may not be able to play two notes on his favorite Steinway & Sons piano or a violin. Yet the gifts that most struck a chord with the 82-yearold retired industrial CEO were inspired by a love of music, especially classical. In November 2006, Korest and his late wife, Marilyn, granted $2.5 million to Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) to establish the Bower School of Music, which was named in honor of his father-in-law and music aficionado, Edwin H. Bower. “My basic core belief is that music provides unusual opportunities that nothing else offers in the same way to improve academic outcomes at all levels, from pre-K on,” says Korest, who joined the FGCU Foundation’s Board of Directors in 1999. “That’s been the focus of my giving because I think music has such potential to improve our country’s dismal academic performance.” The Korests’ FGCU donation achieved that and has kept on giving, from hiring new teachers for the college to launching a music therapy program. Funds were also used to start a program to teach the violin each year to 70 underprivileged preschoolers in Immokalee. Korest proudly reports most of the graduates have gone on to ace Florida’s Kindergarten Readiness Test, scoring in the upper quartile. Korest has made his musical footprint elsewhere in Southwest Florida as well, notably at Moorings Park. He collaborated with builders to help design the community’s Bower Chapel (funded by Bower), which is outfitted with a handcrafted Taylor & Boody organ that took nearly a year to build. His vision of improving access to musical education extends beyond Naples. Last year, he endowed Oberlin College in Ohio with grants to launch an initiative aimed at supporting music programs in disadvantaged public schools, and he gifted the college with $150,000, which it used toward the purchase of its 200th Steinway piano. In his spare time Korest enjoys traveling off the beaten path. He made news headlines for his trek to Libya during the protests in early 2011, a remarkable feat for an octogenarian and grandfather of 10. says Korest. “I am selfish in that I want to keep physically, mentally and intellectually engaged.” u
