Life does not get much better in Naples than in November. Although we don’t experience what some might consider the true version of fall, our own version (and the only one I know) is not too shabby. We enjoy the cooler, crisp days, finally taking the top down on our convertibles and relaxing on a Sunday afternoon without worrying that the leaves are piling up in our yard.

It is also a time when Neapolitans see a flurry of activity as merchants and charities scurry to get out their “save the date” notices, and our calendars start to fill up. One of the first major events of the season is the fabulous Hats in the Garden luncheon. Of course, there’s the stress of what to wear to go with that hat (I know, tough job I have!), as it’s a super-stylish fundraiser for the Naples Botanical Garden. I am always amazed at the turnout of beautiful women, more than 550, and no two with the same topper! As this year marks the tenth anniversary of the event, we share with you the vision of “The Fab Five” (page 82), the women behind what is arguably the most coveted ticket in town.

Beyond the hats, there is so much anticipation this season. Some of the other not-to-be-missed events this month are the Community School of Naples’ Angel Ball on the 9th, The Immokalee Foundation’s Charity Classic Ball on the 16th, and the new Naples Zoo Children’s Gala, also on the 16th. MARK LYE

Golf pro, former TV analyst … and Naples’ ace in the hole.

While Mark Lye is widely known in golf circles, he’s also taking a big swing in the charity circuit in town. The golf pro spent 18 years on the PGA Tour and was a long-time analyst for The Golf Channel before moving his family to Naples and joining Old Collier Country Club three years ago as director of membership. Today, he takes part in about a dozen charity golf events each year across the country. Among his charitable efforts close to home, Lye started the Lucas Cup Pro-Am Golf Tournament earlier this year, benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He named the tournament after his son, who has juvenile diabetes. And this month, Lye is participating in the Immokalee Foundation’s Charity Classic Pro-Am Golf Tournament. —Melanie Hembree NI: Golf has taken you around the world, why choose Naples to settle down?

ML: We love the climate and the Midwest attitude here. This is the best part of Florida.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Naples?

I have a boat and fishing is my passion.

Aside from Old Collier, what are the mustplay golf courses?

Augusta National is my favorite. Next one on the bucket list for people that haven’t played it is Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. Then there’s Cypress Point in Pebble Beach, California.

Do you have a go-to golf shop in Naples?

Pure Performance Golf Labs is the best at assembling golf clubs and they’re good people.

That’s where I have taken my stuff for the last three years.

What advice do you have for avid golfers?

You can practice hard and get everything down, but it’s all about attitude. I have seen guys with awful golf games win big tournaments because they have a non-defeatist attitude. That is what it’s about, no matter what you do in life. Create this on a smaller scale using a series of tumbling pots. Select fruits, flowers and vegetables with hues that are similar to the colors of the room.

This twist on the traditional cornucopia is a tipped-over iron urn filled with burgundy-green and green hydrangeas, sunflowers (plucked of their yellow petals), romantic antique roses, sedum, geranium foliage, liquid amber fall leaves, a mixture of root vegetables and fruits, including pomegranates, figs, plums, black grapes and apples.

MODERN For a streamlined look, hot-chocolate calla lilies are grouped in simple acrylic containers with the stems drenched in shallow water for hydration. The deep plum color of the lily is a surprising take on the classic colors of autumn.

The flower, chosen as much for the beauty of its stem as its bloom, is complemented on the table by plums and wasabi peas, which are delightfully unexpected decorative elements.

That’s when Evanovich’s next book in the Plum series, titled Takedown Twenty (Random House Publishing Group), hits bookshelves and e-readers. By Linda Marx How do your designs capture the spirit of your muse, the late socialite Marchesa Luisa Casati?

She was a living work of art and was so daring and dramatic in the way she dressed—an ideal I strive to achieve in each collection. Her outfits often looked more like costumes than clothing. I trained as a costume designer in school, so I create through that lens and adapt for the modern-day woman.

What daily activity influences your collections?

For our recent Spring collection, I was taken by the spirit of India in the 1960s, especially as captured by The Beatles’ White Album and the band’s relationship with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I utilized a vivid color palette and featured traditional Indian beading and embroidery techniques throughout.

Serenity, one of two Crystal ships, will be in dry dock this month so 70 of its staterooms can be transformed through deep disinfection with nonchemical cleaners and installation of air purification, bacteriostatic barriers, allergy-friendly bedding and antimicrobial sanitizers. Sensitive or not, guests will definitely be able to breathe easier and feel better for those fascinating excursions.

And these, of course, are a highlight of cruising. One of the unique Crystal offerings, available on both the Serenity and its sister ship, Symphony, is its collection of shore adventures.

Gone are the days when cruising meant soft vacationing for sedentary types. Blade Runner BMW’s radical new i8 plug-in hybrid supercar is set to deliver electrifying performance.

By Howard Walker In 1968, the acclaimed (though wacky) sci-fi scribe Philip K. Dick posed the eternal question Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? His novel was the basis for the Harrison Ford cult movie Blade Runner.

Had Dick been around 45 years later to experience the unwrapping of BMW’s phantasmagoric lithium-ion-juiced i8, he might have rephrased the question and inquired Do Androids Dream of Electric Supercars?

Dick would have gotten a serious kick out of climbing behind the wheel of this new i8. He dreamed of a world of futuristic flying cars zooming between skyscrapers, of sleek two-seaters with the kind of styling not dissimilar to the look of this radical new BMW. But this i8 isn’t some wild blue-sky concept designed for the babyboomer Android set. It lands here in the United States this spring with a $135,925 sticker—that’s before any cash-back offers—begging the question: What’s so special about that Ferrari 458?

In addition to its jaw-descending styling, the i8 offers zero-to-60 mph acceleration in a mere 4.3 seconds, yet the ability to whirr in zero-emis58

sion, electric-only mode for as many as 22 miles. Flat out, it’ll do 155, yet it can average an astonishing 94 miles to the gallon.

There’s so much technology and advanced thinking in this new BMW it could have been funded by NASA. Case in point is its lightweight and super-strong carbon-fiber body structure, made of cloth and fibers that came out of a joint venture with Boeing.

The season begins with signs of growth. In the coming year, Collier and Lee counties will be home to a few new performing arts spaces. The Bayshore Cultural & Performing Arts Center (Bayshore CAPA) is one step closer to its new state-of-the-art performance space in the Bayshore Triangle in Naples. The process has begun to select property to house the planned 700-seat theater, 150-seat multiuse “black box” and an outdoor amphitheater. Meanwhile, January will herald the arrival of the Southwest Florida Performing Arts Center in Bonita Springs. The 27,000 square-foot flexible event space will include a 650-seat theater, broadcast center, culinary test kitchen, café and more.

One highlight of the performance season is the commissioning of new music for the Naples Philharmonic. In the visual arts program, The Baker Museum will expand beyond the walls of our galleries by placing sculpture in a handful of locations around town. In addition, German artist Lothar Nickel will create a sculpture from marble on the grounds of Artis—Naples.

Opening Acts

In March, TheatreZone presents the musical Chess on stage at the G&L Theatre at the Community School of Naples (above) .

In an apparent nod to the cultural appetite of Neapolitans, award-winning playwright Suzanne Bradbeer chose Gulfshore Playhouse to debut her new drama, The God Game. Presented in partnership with the Capital Repertory Theatre beginning January 16, the play tackles the tough questions of what is public and private in politics. Following the premiere performance in Naples, the play will open in Albany, New York, in May. (gulfshoreplayhouse.org) In another first, TheatreZone offers the first regional production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind. TheatreZone’s Artistic Director Mark Danni first saw the musical in London’s West End and seized the opportunity to bring it to Naples. TheatreZone is also bringing back Chess this season, which it first presented in 2007.

Island Theater Company Three comedies and a holiday special are sure to delight the entire family at this community theater on Marco Island. Blame it on Beckett opens this month, followed by a Christmas production, Three Wise Men and a Baby in December. Naples Players Marking its sixtieth anniversary last March, the Naples Players showcases some award-winning standouts this season. Our Town, a Pulitzer-winning play and Thornton Wilder’s most frequently performed work, opens later this month.

The heart-tugging love story revolves around marriage, family and the importance of savoring the moments we often take for granted. Then, for comedic relief in the spring, The Drowsy Chaperone is certain to lighten one’s day. The crowd-pleasing musical has won five Tony Awards. (naplesplayers.org)

The Barber of Seville

Opera Naples Four timeless productions—from the humorous classic The Barber of Seville to the dramatic Nabucco—provide a variety of options for patrons of Opera Naples. visual arts Local Visions DeBruyne Fine Art presents works from four diverse artists who share a love for Naples. Kicking off the season January 16, “Pure Magic” features E.J. Paprocki’s paintings showcasing the beauty of the Everglades and New York City. Donny Finley tells a personal story with his collection titled, “Visions in Art 2014.” Finley says, “When I was a small boy, my dad was a jail keeper and my mother cooked for the inmates. In the yard, the only place to look was up at the sky,” he recalls. “I would lie on the grass to see the faces and shapes in the clouds. Art comes to life

This season, 13 different exhibitions from architecture to costume arts call visitors to The Baker Museum at Artis—Naples. The museum also offers the opportunity to watch a master at work. Over the course of three to five weeks beginning in early January, Lothar Nickei will transform a chunk of marble into a work of art before the public’s eyes. The finished sculpture, commissioned by the museum and underwritten by Friends of Art, will then become part of the permanent collection. The Baker Museum also showcases the first ever exhibition focused on the Duchamp family, artists who contributed significantly to the early phases of modern art. Developed along with prominent scholar Francis Naumann, “Duchamp Brother and Sister” features the work of four members of the Duchamp family: Jacques Villon, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp. The Naples International Film Festival puts independent filmmakers in the spotlight for four days beginning November 7, including student film and Florida film categories this year. On a balmy morning in June, five ladies gathered for a tea party on the lushly land­ scaped grounds of the Naples Botanical Garden. But it wasn’t simply the scones that brought Leslie Fogg, Jane Berger, Kath­ leen Kapnick, Karen Scott and Vicky Smith together. They are united by a longtime love of the garden and a deep devotion to its last­ ing success.

In fact, that devotion has earned these ladies a collective nickname among garden insiders. They are known as the “Fab Five.”

All have chaired the garden’s signature fund­ raising event, Hats in the Garden, which marks its tenth year this month. They are also members of the Sustaining Leadership Coun­ cil, a group of women committed to provid­ ing financial support and raising awareness for the garden.

As the garden prepares to meet another milestone in 2014 with the opening of the

Ask the Fab Five about the beginnings of Hats in the Garden, and they’ll credit Jane Berger. Ask Berger, and she’ll credit her lucky charm: Carlton Varney.

In 1996, Berger sat next to the famed inte­ rior designer on an early morning flight from Dublin to New York. The tired twosome struck up a conversation, and Berger revealed her wish to launch an event in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio, similar to the popular lun­ cheon at New York City’s Central Park Conser­ vancy. Varney boldly promised his support, and the rest is history: He attended Berger’s Columbus inaugural luncheon as well as the inaugural Naples Hats in the Garden.

Today Hats is a sold-out event with a wait­ ing list. Kapnick has chaired two Hats gather­

ings and describes the day as being “like the Easter parade in November.” Society loves a chance to show its loveliest side, but there’s something about this particular party that’s special, she says.

“There’s no other event in town where you get to see so many ladies so beautifully turned out,” Kapnick says. “And as it becomes better known, people realize how much fun it is, not just to spend some time in the garden, but to see what [hats] people are wearing. Some are homemade. Some are the latest Parisian fashions. But it’s always a fashion show, whether or not we’re having a fashion show.”

Fogg still recalls the first Hats in the Garden. Forget glitz and glamour; in those days, all you needed to shine was a glue gun. One of Fogg’s craftier friends even took an old hat, snipped off the brim and added empty pillboxes to create her own “pill box hat.” Now ladies don the most magnificent millinery they can find, and the luncheon lures the hottest names in haute couture, including Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta.

For Fogg, who currently serves as a co-chair of the garden’s capital campaign with Vicky and David Smith, the garden continues to captivate even after a decade of involvement. And the event helps sustain it. About 30 percent of the garden’s annual operating budget is derived from money raised by Hats in the Garden and the contributions of the Sustaining Leadership Council, notes Meghan Gorman, the garden’s associate director of development.

“They really are the backbone of the garden,” Gorman says of Hats supporters and the Sustaining Leadership Council.

And so are the friendships that have blossomed over the years. It was a decade ago when Fogg

invited Scott, her friend, to what was then just a little luncheon called Hats in the Garden. Unlike others in the Fab Five, Scott had no experience with botanical gardens, but the invitation piqued her curiosity. Initially, Scott was simply looking for a volunteer opportunity to meet new people and occupy her time, but it grew into a lasting passion.

Since then, Scott has co-chaired three of the luncheons along with Vicky Smith, including the tenth annual Hats in November. This year’s event journal will offer a look back at many of the past decade’s highlights, including memories from event attendees.

Road Trip Naples Food Tours (naplesfoodtours.com) hits the road for its third season November 1. Owner and food lover Elaine Osbond had toured the culinary landscape in many cities in her global travels. When she noticed a similar attraction was lacking in Naples, she started her own. The tours, from 2 to 5 p.m., accommodate up to 14 people, and are filled mostly by private groups.

The schedule runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for groups, while individuals can sign up on Wednesdays or every third Saturday. The bus stops at a changing list of five or six restaurants and specialty food shops for tastings. “I assumed it would be all tourists, but I have had mostly locals,” says Osbond, noting that many told her they had never heard of some of the places, even though they’ve lived in Naples for decades. —K.S.

The New Deal A quick guide to one of the favorite fall rituals for wine connoisseurs­— the release of the year's Beaujolais.

Beaujolais is more than Nouveau.

Few of us wine drinkers understand exactly why we do it, but it has become one of the rituals of fall: On the third Thursday in November, the release date for Beaujolais Nouveau, people around the world engage in an intense competition to be the first to taste the bottling.

Let’s look at just what led to the annual celebration of the wine’s official release.

Beaujolais Nouveau basics: For centuries, many wine estates have been making some form of new wine to give to their harvest workers. After all, it’s cheaper than having them drink the prime stuff. Beaujolais Nouveau is harvested, fermented and immediately bottled without aging. In France, it’s illegal to sell it after January 1.

Taste profile: Beaujolais is known for its vivid flavors of fresh berries, and Nouveau is no exception. It is light in texture and alcohol content and goes down easily. It’s a red that appeals to white wine drinkers.

Nouveau makes a good aperitif and pairs well with an assortment of finger foods, fish and white meat dishes—including that Thanksgiving turkey.

Stylish sipping: Beaujolais Nouveau always enjoyed some popularity, first in the bistros of Lyon and later in Paris. It became fashionable more widely after World War II. However, many observers trace its worldwide popularity back to the late 1970s. California wine was on the rise, and sales of French wine were declining in America for the first time. Winemaker Georges Duboeuf is often credited with the idea of making the Beaujolais Nouveau release a global event, and he succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations.

The good: From a consumer point of view, Nouveau is a no-brainer. The wine is almost impossible to dislike. From the standpoint of producers, it’s a cash cow—a wine that allows them to rake in immediate income without expensive oak aging. To a winemaker or wine geek, Nouveau also provides the first clue as to what the Burgundy vintage will be like.

The bad: At first, the stepped-up marketing of Nouveau was a bonanza for the region, but after a few years, problems began to emerge. Many consumers got faulty impressions—that all Beaujolais was Nouveau; that they only ought to buy it in November; that Beaujolais wasn’t a serious wine; and that they should never pay more than $10 for it. In fact, the top Beaujolais from the 10 crus are some of the most glorious wines produced in France. In a good year, these wines easily rival the best Burgundies,

to seek out The hopes of Beaujolais producers are high this year after a disappointing 2012 harvest that was plagued by rain. The most reliable Nouveau in the United States comes from the large négociants, or wine merchants, who blend wine from dozens or hundreds of different growers.

Louis Jadot: Venerable Burgundy estate expanded south into Beaujolais in 2000.

Mommessin: Producing Beaujolais since 1865.

though it would be hard to convince the average American wine drinker of that. Nouveau damaged the market for real Beaujolais in the United States, effectively tossing the region into a tailspin from which it still hasn’t recovered.

The myth: Many mistakenly believe Beaujolais doesn’t age well. In fact, top crus, such as Moulin-àVent or Brouilly, don’t reach their peak before four to six years, and can last far longer than that. When I visited Mommessin, I tasted 15- and 16 year-old examples of Brouilly that were bright, fresh and pristine. So go ahead and race to the Nouveau kickoff, but later slow down to savor some serious Beaujolais.«

Holiday Hors d’oeuvres As our social calendar quickly expands, the challenge is keeping our waistline from expanding with it— thanks to the hidden saboteurs in the holiday hors d’oeuvres. While traditional rolls have generally fallen out of favor at most catered events, there is still no shortage of diet-busting temptations.

“Cheese and cream are the items people still love and have a hard time saying no to,” says Fred Gardner, owner of Matthews and Gardner catering company in Naples. “And it’s the cheese in the hors d’oeuvres that probably contributes the most calories.” Of course, most events will offer a few healthful bites, too—you just have to hold out for them.

“Make an effort to walk through the event with your eyes first, then choose,” says Ana Howe, owner of Here’s Howe Catering in Naples. “I like to stick with protein like grilled chicken or salmon and no bread. Plus, lots of veggies and fruit—period.”

Painting a Brighter Future By christina wells As owners of the Harmon-Meek Gallery for more than three decades, William and Barbara Meek are deeply rooted in the Naples community, where they share a sweeping passion for art with a philanthropic brush. The couple established the Harmon-Meek Fund to provide art programs for disadvantaged children through the Boys & Girls Club, Grace Place and Youth Haven.

“We have always felt strongly about exposing children to fine art,” says Barbara Meek, who operates the gallery with her husband and two daughters, Kristine and Juliana. “Bill’s appreciation for art comes from his parents taking him to art museums across Europe while his father, an Army officer, was stationed abroad.”

William, or Bill, as his family calls him, has since organized three fundraising events that generated more than $300,000 for the Naples Art Association, while also initiating the permanent art collections found at Artis—Naples, The von Liebig Art Center and Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples (C’mon).

“The gift of your time and talent allows a nonprofit to spend donation dollars on mission-related programs rather than fundraising,” says Bill, who worked with American Master artists or their widows to secure donations of 60 works of art valued at more than $1 million. It became the foundation for the Modern American Masters collection that started the venue now named The Baker Museum.

The couple’s commitment to philanthropy has also inspired their daughters. Kristine Meek serves on the Naples Zoo board of directors and committees for The Conservancy of Southwest Florida, C’mon and The League Club. Juliana Meek is on the board of the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida and has served on the gala committee for David Lawrence Center.

“You can’t teach someone to be philanthropic,”

says Barbara, “but you can set an example.” «

The first annual Visionaries of the Visual Arts Award and Benefit Dinner presented

by Harmon-Meek Gallery will be held January 14, 2014, at the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club. The event will honor three individuals for contributions to the visual arts in Southwest Florida. Proceeds benefit at-risk youth and local children’s art programs.
