IT’S A DIFFERENT WORLD poked my head into the office of one of our executives a few minutes ago. Our director of operations, who handles most of our technology, was sitting at the desk of the person I went to see, working the keyboard and mouse while staring at the screen, while our director of production and manufacturing was poised over his shoulder. It was the magazine-industry equivalent of a crisis intervention.

The person I sought was sitting in one of his guest chairs, bent over a smartphone, apparently not wasting a moment. He knew to stay out of their way and stay on task; I took it as a cue to make my way out of his office as quickly as I could.

While I have become moderately tech-savvy through the years (I can just imagine our technology people snickering as they read this), a couple of the things I pride myself on in terms of management are: 1) When it comes to computers and anything with silicon chips, “I don’t know what I don’t know”; 2) I am much better off getting away quickly without giving input, and so is everyone else; and 3) things that “should only take a minute” or “a couple of clicks” never do.

Back in my office, I was pondering the scene I had just witnessed and thinking about the days when we printed columns of type and used X-acto knives, T-squares, cardboard layout sheets, film and sketch pads. Later, but still seemingly eons ago, we sent CDs to a “service bureau” and got back huge sheets of film to send to our printers to make press plates.

That was then; now, in the digital age, paper and the tools used to manipulate it don’t much figure into the prepress equation.

These days, all our computers “talk” to one another (except when they don’t), our editors work almost exclusively on screens and we transmit digital files over high-speed lines to our printers, whose plates are “burned” by lasers with no need for film.

The entire process takes less time and less money and produces a far better quality magazine.

The publishing industry is indeed a different world, and we are proud to navigate it as a technology leader. As for those flashbacks I have on occasion of the old days? They pop up every now and then, mostly as reminders that it’s good to change.

n Halloween. Consuming copious amounts of chocolate while I’m in costume sets my heart aflutter; the elegant table decorations on page 78 make me want to host my own soiree.

n A new seafood restaurant hits the Village on Venetian Bay, and Bha! Bha! Persian Bistro is opening on Fifth Avenue South (page 44). I’m getting hungry already!

ong before I purchased my first place, I used to think home ownership was easy breezy, a quick sprint from when you find the right property to signing on the dotted line. Even after shaking hands and closing the deal, I felt again it wasn’t too complicated: You hire an interior designer, explain what you want and call it a day.

But now, two condos, a house and years of wisdom later, I’ve come to view it as an exciting, ongoing process—much more like running a marathon. In fact, I get giddy visiting showrooms and practically want to pat myself on the back when I find a pair of must-have mercury glass candlesticks that would look perfect on my dining room table. Sure there are twists and turns, challenges that spring up out of nowhere, and it can be a bit tiring at times, but that’s what makes it interesting and the final payout even sweeter. Who cares if the last barbeque left the pool furniture in not-so-top-notch form? Consider the possibilities.

Plus as many marathoners say, once you start, you’ll never want to stop. When those finish-line endorphins kick in, a whole new plan sets into motion. No one exemplifies this as much as Juergen Mross, whose home is the subject of “Garden Art” (page 72). He hired the same landscape architect to rework the entire expanse of his waterfront Port Royal estate twice in the past three years; he enjoys the fun of going back to the drawing board and sees his drive to reinvent as a hobby.

Dear Dr. Fox, I have wanted to get a face lift for about 15 years, but my husband has not been in favor of it, because he is afraid that I will look totally different. How do I convince him otherwise?

A:

A:

Usually an in office procedure without anesthesia implies only a skin procedure without enough attention to the underlying architectural framework of your face. When this happens, you rely on your skin to form the basis for the rejuvenation. As we all know, your skin gets looser as you get older and if the skin is used to elevate the face, you will obviously not have a long lasting result. The long lasting results seen with a modern facelift are a direct result of the elevation of deeper muscle that hold the tissues of the face in place with very little reliance on the skin for the maintenance of facial architecture. A modern facelift actually works out to be a much better investment (not to mention a far superior result) as it will usually last for about 9-10 years, and even then you will still look better than you did before your procedure.

Let him know that if you correctly choose a plastic surgeon who knows how to restore the normal architecture of your face, you will look like you did when you were younger. Think about most of the actresses in Hollywood who have had facelifts. Some actresses appear not to age and others quite frankly look, (as your husband puts it,) totally different. This is why understanding the vectors(the angles of tension) in the face and how to restore the normal architecture are so important. That knowledge results in a refreshed, normal, younger face. Another factor to consider is people live a lot longer now than in days gone by. How you feel about yourself affects every part of your life.

Dear Dr. Fox, I have been getting fillers for years, but they do not seem to be working anymore, as I am not getting the same results. Can you please explain why this happened?

A:

Q: A:

You are describing classic signs associated with excess upper eyelid skin. This can be treated with an eyelid lift. Meticulous measurements are done of your eyelid skin when you are both awake and asleep as it is extraordinarily important to remove just the right amount of skin. This particular operation typically has no bruising and only a one day recovery period.

Q:

Dr. Fox, I had a lifestyle lift 2 years ago. At the time I was warned by my friends that it would not last.

I heard what they said but I thought I would give it a try anyway. After one year about 50% of it was gone, after two years about 75% was gone and now it looks like I never had anything done. What is the difference between a lifestyle lift and a real facelift?

Dear Dr. Fox, I have been getting fillers for years, but they do not seem to be working anymore, as I am not getting the same results. Can you please explain why this happened?

Most likely your doctor is just filling in lines without regard to the volume loss over your entire face. This volume loss is a normal part of aging and usually begins around 40. Prior to injecting any filler, one should evaluate the entire face, the lips, the cheeks, the chin, and the corners of the mouth, etc.. In addition to reducing lines, the point of fillers is to make you look young. If your doctor only focuses on a few lines instead of your entire face, you will have a less than optimal result. When it comes to fillers even the most minute amounts (fractions of milliliters) can make a huge difference.

I’m a golfer. My father-in-law belongs to Old Collier, so we play there quite a bit. But I spend the most time with my five- and two-year-old at the beach.

Early at night, we like to go out to dinner; with a little ice cream afterwards, it’s a perfect day. n How has your experience with Paul’s condition affected you?

It’s changed me dramatically. It makes me realize not to sweat the small stuff, to think big picture, and to value those days—every day—that I can be with my kids and have a great day by the water in Naples. We’ve come to appreciate time. There are some hurdles ahead, but his prognosis is fantastic and he’s growing like a weed. n How do you feel about leading Fox News Channel’s election night coverage?

I’m humbled by my big boss Roger Ailes’ confidence in me. And I could not be more excited to be in this position. I always dreamed about being an anchor of a political show when the country was paying attention to politics. I think this is going to be the case this year; I really see people carefully watching what’s going on. I think what happens over the next few months will be historic, one way or another.

In mid-October, it’s not just stone crabs making a seasonal debut...

Southwest Florida foodies wait half a year for the return of the tender claws on the 15th, and this fall a big bass is also splashing onto the scene: FISH Restaurant (239-263-3474) plans to open that day at the north end of the Village on Venetian Bay, and it will lure diners with the bonus of an indoor-outdoor dining room featuring 50 feet of unobstructed canal-front views. “We’re going to have all the crabs you can possibly get a hold of—stone, king, Jonah,” says owner Salvatore Sinzieri. “I love sushi, so we’ll have a sushi bar in addition to the regular bar, and a fish cutting room, which is like a meat locker, keeping the temperature constant at 39 degrees.”

Chilled seafood towers, grilled freshly caught fish, steamed lobster and a number of sides, from the expected (asparagus and spinach) to the surprising (mushroom couscous and bacon-smashed redskinned potatoes), round out the menu. The blue marble bar tops and a massive open kitchen give off a contemporary vibe, and Sinzieri hopes to reel in guests late into the evening, with dinner being served until 11 p.m. and libations flowing even later.

Millennials are upending the rules to being oenophiles in intoxicating ways.

Gradually but noticeably, wine is being marketed differently in America.

The Millennial Generation has become the second-largest wine-consuming group in the country, right behind the Baby Boomers, and the industry has caught on. Sometimes referred to as Generation Y or Generation Next, this crowd can be roughly defined as the 21- to 35-year-old demographic (you know, the bunch raised on iPods and Facebook), and they are experiencing wine in a totally different way than their parents do.

Young imbibers today want to know how wine fits into their social and recreational lives, rather than obsessing about when the grapes were harvested, how the juice was vinified, or which critic rated it 93 points.

Consider Mutineer Magazine, published by 28-year-old Alan Kropf. It focuses on beer and spirits as well as wine, and its mission is “to share the modern fine-beverage experience with the Millennial Generation.”

Rather than running didactic reviews, the

pages are more likely to feature pieces on personalities such as video blogger Gary Vaynerchuk, founder of Wine Library TV; Randall Grahm, author and founder of Bonny Doon Vineyard; and rocker-turnedwinemaker Maynard James Keenan. Mutineer also sponsors a series of traveling conferences called Wine Circuses around the country, consisting of three-hour seminars that discuss millennial culture and its impact on the wine business.

One of the speakers at the Wine Circuses is Tyler Balliet, founder of Second Glass, an enthusiasts’ group best known for so-called Wine Riots—relaxed, casual

tastings held in major cities. Instead of taking notes, participants are encouraged to download a mobile app and record their impressions on their smartphones.

The events include a DJ spinning what is described as a “killer soundtrack,” and towards the end of the evening, attendees can get a temporary tattoo and pose in a photo booth. Following the first-ever of these in Brooklyn, The New York Times headlined its review: “Wine Riot Attracts NonSnobby Sippers.”

According to industry insiders, the booming success of the Australian “critter labels,” such as Yellow Tail and Little Penguin, can be attributed to their popularity among the 21-30 age group. With bright colors and cartoonish depictions of exotic animals, these bottles appear to be as far removed as possible from the wines favored by the parents of Gen Y. In addition, the flavor profiles appeal to novice wine drinkers; off-dry, filled with forward fruit and low in tannin, they provide an easy introduction.

It’s no surprise that brands are being created specifically with this audience in mind. One example is HobNob, created

by W.J. Deutsch & Sons with the intent of “taking the pretension out of wine,” in the words of one executive. HobNob is imported from France, but you won’t find that information on the bottle, nor will you see a line drawing of a château—just a clean and eye-catching geometric design.

As one might expect, the marketing campaign includes a heavy dose of social media, along with an interactive website and an iPhone app.

Millennials appear to be extremely sensitive to pandering, and companies are cautiously trying not to step over the line when soliciting their business. But at the same time, Gen Y-ers’ spirit of adventure and willingness to try new things (independent of third-party reviews) is electrifying the wine world. Interested onlookers want to know what the young crowd is pouring, and it’s certainly not your father’s Lafite. u

pursuits First Class CALL OF THE WILD The intrinsic desire to observe and understand our biological ancestors in the “land of 1,000 hills” fuels the luxury travel boom defining Rwanda. By Paul Rubio Residing in the mysterious, mist-capped forests of Central Africa, the iconic mountain gorilla shares 97 percent of its DNA composition with human beings. The species’ plight for survival first captured global attention through the tireless work of Dian Fossey and remains at the top of conservation agendas.

Every wildlife enthusiast dreams of the day he or she will come face-to-face with the world’s last surviving mountain gorillas. For me, that day was June 3, 2012.

In an age where travelers can shop High Street or unwind in opulence at Le Meurice on a whim, the pilgrimage to Rwanda to interact with gorillas in the equatorial jungle is an experience unlike any other. My contemporaries and I on the safari longed to immerse ourselves in the lost world of our critically endangered relatives and experience their all-encompassing majesty firsthand.

Thankfully, Rwanda’s current climate does not reflect its tragic history. The country in the twenty-first century is safe and inviting, with a bustling yet remarkably pristine capital city, Kigali, and excellent infrastructure.

Nature tourism is the country’s primary source of income, and it fosters an ongoing national commitment to conservation.

This dedication is palpable in the northwest reaches across the picturesque peaks and valleys of Volcanoes National Park, home to Rwanda’s 380-plus mountain gorillas, just about half of the planet’s surviving population. The park encompasses a substantial portion of the Virunga Mountains, a precious swathe of lush primate habitat extending to

neighboring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. While the challenges of conservation are heightened by international boundaries, Rwanda’s park service professionals and stalwart nongovernmental organizations have habituated 18 troops of mountain gorillas within its borders. And because of a well-established permit system, nine of these families are accessible to visitors on prearranged gorilla treks.

For the next two mornings, expect a 5:30 a.m. wake-up “knock” for an on-time arrival at park headquarters to begin this unforgettable adventure. On my first trek, I was assigned to the 17-member Hirwe family, which includes a young silverback and his charismatic newborn twins. After several hours of hiking through a combination of rain forest and bamboo forest, our park guides led us to

the silverback, two females and the twins sunbathing near a dry riverbed, with the rest of the extended family close behind.

The following day brought us in close contact with the Sabyinyo troop, twice the size of Hirwe and led by the largest living silverback male on record (nearly 500 pounds).

Under the dense canopy, the family dynamics, the new personalities and the curious tree-climbing juveniles offered a completely different experience from the previous one.

Amazingly enough, the intrigue doesn’t end with the gorilla encounter. Rwanda, about the size of Maryland, is easy to traverse and offers much more to explore.

Within Volcanoes National Park, treks are conducted each day in search of the rare golden monkey. Farther afield but within driving distance, at Nyungwe Forest National Park in the country’s southwestern reaches, chimpanzee excursions headline the daily agenda.

If I had to nominate the hottest trend in automobiles right now— apart from those annoying bright-white, hockey stick-shaped LED lights—it would have to be the four-door coupe.

Since Mercedes-Benz created the genre with its stunning CLS back in 2003, it seems like every carmaker has leapt onto the bandwagon: Volkswagen with its CC, Audi with its A7, Porsche with its Panamera, and even Jaguar with its XJ. The appeal is pretty straightforward. Everyone loves the swoopy lines of a two-door coupe. That’s why the Bentley Continental GT can bring grown men to tears, while the four-door Continental Flying Spur version is like visual Prozac.

But two doors come with compromises, like usually minuscule rear seats, and accessing them requires the contortionist skills of a Caribbean limbo dancer. Watch riders try to extract themselves from the back of the Continental GT, and you’d think you were watching America’s Funniest Home Videos.

turner and stretch the wheelbase to give more legroom in the back, and you have seemingly the perfect compromise—form with functionality. Take a long, lingering look at Aston Martin’s four-door Rapide, and tell me it doesn’t make sense.

But is it all just a fad? Will one too many riders relegated to the rear seat complain at the lack of headroom? Or scream bloody murder upon whacking their heads on that ski-slope-like roof as they slither in?

Just as I was beginning to raise my hand in support of the faddist argument, I clapped eyes on BMW’s achingly gorgeous new 6 Series Gran Coupe. Had he still been around, Wordsworth would have penned sonnets in adoration of this car; Romeo would have ditched Juliet as the focus of his affection.

To witness its true gorgeousness, gaze at the Gran Coupe in profile. It’s that old school, classic look of a long, long hood, high waist and low roof, as well as a roofline that sweeps down to a short, stubby, near-horizontal trunk lid.

It’s also pretty impressive when you open a door and climb aboard. Our tester came with the new creamywhite Opal leather with Amaro Brown accents. It was like sitting in a cup of cappuccino.

In the back, there’s no shortage of stretch-out legroom, but while BMW labels the car as a 4+1 seater, with space for a middle backseat rider, don’t believe it.

As the wide center console runs all the way through, anyone in the middle would have to straddle it as if riding Seabiscuit.

Depending on your need for speed, there are two engines to choose from. The entry model—the Gran Coupe 640i, which is the one we’ve been sampling—features BMW’s super 3.0-liter turbocharged in-line 6. Performance lovers, however, will probably opt for the more potent 650i version, with BMW’s much-loved 5.5-liter turbo V-8 under that long hood cranking out a meaty 443 horsepower.

For us, the 3.0-liter entry model provides such a sweet balance between power (it packs a healthy 315 horsepower and 330 poundfeet of torque) and excellent fuel economy (20 mpg city and 30 mpg highway). And coupled with a new 8-speed ZF auto, it can sprint

from rest to 60 mph in a swift 5.6 seconds.

If there’s a minor criticism of the 3.0-liter in the 640i, it’s that it is a little short on low-speed response. The engine has to be spinning above 3,000 rpm to get it to perk up. But after that, it really does pull like an Amtrak locomotive all the way to its 7,000 rpm red line. And the tasty combo of nicely weighted steering, well-tuned suspension and a surprisingly smooth, supple ride makes the 640i a true joy to drive.

One big surprise with the 640i Gran Coupe is its pricing. At $76,895—with the potential to soar to close to $100,000 when you load up on options—it’s $4,000 more than the V-8-powered Mercedes-Benz CLS550 and $17,000 more than the lovely Audi A7.

But then again, who ever said beauty comes cheap? u

When Linda Sonders found an original Port Royal home, she saw immediately it was the right fit for her sister, Liz Ann Sonders, and brother-in-law Bob Meier. As an area Realtor, Linda says she knew a good buy when she saw it. As a renovator and designer, she recognized the home had everything it needed, but would be even better with some changes. Interestingly, in a secret door in the paneled library, she found a scale model of the home the original architect had made.

Her 14-month makeover used that original footprint, but she gave it a twist by moving walls to create open living areas. The reconfigured pool and deck are perfect for entertaining, and sliding pocket doors connect the main living areas to the outdoors. Since the couple spends a lot of time in Bermuda, the island served as inspiration, and the result was a dwelling that’s unpretentious and clean. “I was overall project manager and did much of the design work with my sister, who was extraordinarily involved in every decision,” Linda says.

Liz Ann appreciates how relaxing, happy, bright and comfortable the place is, and that its heart—the kitchen—works well for parties and casual gatherings.

Besides the new wine room, her husband especially likes how the house opens up and flows to the pool and yard, not to mention the fabulous view out back.

“This was nowhere near a quaint cottage when we found it. It was an ugly, neglected ’50s track house with a flat roof and leaking jalousie windows. In short, it was bulldozer bait,” says Stephen J. Hruby, of Architects Unlimited, Naples.

His client bought the house anyway, attracted by the dock space that would be perfect for his boat. The renovation started with a kitchen expansion and remodel, plus redoing the façade to enhance the curb appeal. But its scope quickly expanded and ended up as a redo of the entire interior, along with the addition of a master bath in the rear, a new carport, and an overhaul of the pool area, all of which took nine months to complete.

“What once was the worst thing on the block now gets praise and attention from the community as a wonderful example of Florida cottage architecture and how existing houses can be salvaged and transformed,” Hruby says. “The owner loves the scale, authenticity and casual elegance of the home. For him, the ‘beach cottage,’ as he calls it, is more comfortable than one of the larger, elaborate estates so often found in this area.”

Cindy Christensen, a pioneer in the concept of instant home makeovers on television who appeared several times in HGTV shows, recently relocated to Naples and set up an interior design business in town.

Shortly after she arrived, she bought a Park Shore home built in the 1970s that had the right elemental structure—and she immediately envisioned how she could make it wonderful, while staying in line with the house’s original character and that of the neighborhood. The five-month soup-to-nuts endeavor included gutting the interior, moving walls to create an open, clean-lined space, putting in new master

and guest baths, a completely new kitchen, flooring, hurricane windows and doors, and installing updated mechanical, plumbing and electric. The roofline was cut back to open up the entry, and Christensen also redesigned the entire yard, replacing the grass and adding trees, plants and outdoor lighting.

“What I accomplished with my home is a perfect example of how an experienced designer can transform a dated property into a beautiful residence inside and out,” Christensen says.

As the British owner set out to turn this modest, traditional coach home at the Dunes into a luxurious upscale dwelling, she drew inspiration from photographs in both European and American publications and upon her desire for it to have a contemporary European feel and flair.

The rooms were stripped down to the studs and completely remodeled with custom cabinetry, closet systems and built-in furniture. The materials used include exotic tile, glass and lighting from all over the world, in addition to high-end appliances and a dramatic 15-foot-long crystal entry chandelier.

Contractor Tony Felice of Sunbuilt Inc. knew the homeowner wanted the space to be open and bright, with a sophisticated elegance that was comfortable and inviting. Working with the Sunbuilt team and her husband, she chose all the elements for the six-month project, including securing custom furniture and pieces from Kreiss. garden art Landscape architect Edward Westwood Jr. crafts striking green scenes with Naples’ diverse flora—and the help of creative, design-minded homeowners.

Juergen Mross believes plants and flowers are like fashion accessories, enhancing and improving the look of a home. “A house is constant work,” he says. “Changing the scenery is like buying new clothes when you get tired of the old ones.”

To that end, the German-born Mross, a former titan in Pittsburgh’s steel industry who co-founded Cronimet Corporation, hired Edward Westwood Jr. of Gardenbleu Landscape Architecture to rework the grounds of his Port Royal home both when Mross bought it in 2009 and again this year.

Westwood’s original design for the waterfront British West Indies plantation-inspired estate skewed tropical, with orange- and red-hued bromeliads along the pool and a yellow-and-white striped awning over a bar in back. But Mross, whose taste generally runs transitional bordering modern, had one goal in the redesign: Even though he somewhat enjoys the tour boats that pass by on the canal each day, he was hoping for more privacy in the outdoor living area without compromising its first-rate views. That plus he was aiming for a look that was still simple yet decidedly more lush than the first design, which almost seems barren now by comparison.

“I wanted easy and attractive living that was pleasing to the eye—and some extra privacy,” Mross says. “I’m German. I want it perfect all the time. Ed had to deliver that in a garden. With various seasons and logistics, it’s demanding.”

Westwood’s other challenge was to create luxuriant plantings within small confines, such as the 12 inches between the edge of the driveway and the house in the front courtyard. Westwood layered five different plants to create a sense of depth. “We made use of every piece of turf, and because of that, the area looks bigger than it actually is,” he says.

“It reads very gardenesque despite it being a rather open space.”

To give the landscape texture and added visual appeal, Westwood mixed and matched to no end. In fact, the potted plants around the pool and in front of the house are changed frequently to continually introduce the variety 74 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

the homeowner loves. “For me, the atypical part of this project is the number of plants,” Westwood says, noting that the large urns around the pool contain nine different species alone. “There are probably over 50 different kinds of plants in the design. It’s based on geometry and shape.”

Westwood traveled across the state to Homestead to visit growers and select unique options, ones that don’t normally make their way onto Naples lawns. “I was like a kid in the candy shop. If the client is open to it, you can try new, exciting things.”

As much as Mross encouraged Westwood to bring in unusual plants in addition to more typical hibiscus and palm trees, there was one thing he would not have­—mulch. “I hate mulch,” Mross says, pointing to the black pebbles that frame the neatly edged beds. “I hate a mess.”

Westwood says the stones and edging have the bonus of making the landscaping easier to maintain while providing clear, clean lines.

Throughout, Westwood worked to have the landscaping accessorize the architecture.

“In all spaces, there are columns, gates, forming little vignettes,” he says.

One element in the garden that didn’t need Westwood’s enhancement is the stainless steel sculpture by artist Peter Calaboyias,

When Less CAN BE More Down the block, fellow Port Royal residents Len and Wanda Zaiser were inspired by the open vistas of a yard they saw on vacation in the Dominican Republic to rethink the verdant greenery around the home they built in 1989.

The project began by hiring Westwood last year with the desire to fix five mature oak trees in front of the house that had gotten so big they were buckling the grates around them. The plans grew from a quick solution to a full renovation. “It started out as a small fix, but once we started, we couldn’t find a place to stop,” says Westwood. “The simplicity read so well that whatever was left untouched looked out of place.”

The home’s distinctive architecture (it was designed by renowned postmodern Chicago architect Harry Weese) featuring grids of wood around creamy stone was hidden by the landscaping, as were the waterfront views from the front of the house. The new blueprint, using basic elements such as turf and coconut palms, reveals and enhances the view, the home—and even an interesting twisted gumbo-limbo tree trunk.

However, basic doesn’t necessarily mean easy. “When you are paring down to the simplest of details, it has to be perfect,” Westwood says. “Every material went through a meticulous study.”

Wanda Zaiser credits the landscaping for renewing her love of the lines of the uniquely designed home. “It looks new now,” she says. “We are very happy.”

Initially, Mross asked the artist, whom he has known since 1986, to create a sculpture for the home’s front courtyard. But Calaboyias had other ideas. “I knew Juergen had a beautiful view of the water,” Calaboyias says. “I saw the back of the house and said, ‘That’s where you live.’ I knew it didn’t belong in the front.”

The sculpture, called Window, is from a series Calaboyias did based on freestanding doors and windows of abandoned

Aegean island village dwellings. An arc through the square represents the eternal sun, he says. The sculpture was angled to maximize the view of the water from the house, while at the same time serving to frame the house for boaters who may be looking at it from the water.

The overall effect created by Westwood ties the architecture seamlessly with the landscaping in the front and back, and makes the pool look like it is set within a terrace. The result is a semi-

secret garden that fits Mross’ goal of relaxed Florida living.

“I use the outdoor space all the time,” Mross says, noting that the landscape lighting by George Winterling Lighting Inc. is well-suited to entertaining.

“My German friends like this design,” he says. “It has broad appeal and is very international.”

Mross gets attention for his homes elsewhere as well. His Pittsburgh estate received the gold award for excellence in

landscape installation in 2007 from the Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association, and several of his properties have been featured in design magazines.

“I pay a lot of attention to the inside and outside,” he says, adding that he’s currently renovating a house on a lake near Pittsburgh in the style of a German country lodge. “This is my hobby. Every home I’ve ever owned, I’ve changed. If it is cold and rainy outside, I move furniture around.” u NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2012 77

Musical Prelude Designed by Jackie Drake For an aristocratic pre-opera dinner, Drake arranges a regal tableau starring her family’s hand-painted Herend Blue Garland china, which was passed down through the generations. The dinnerware, also a favorite of Princess Diana, is from a 185-year-old Hungarian maker whose porcelain has been owned by 20 royal couples.

A Literary feast Designed by Lynn Royal Royal’s 1891 bound volumes of The Complete Works of Alfred Lord Tennyson, given to her great-aunt in 1901, influenced this Victorian scene. The cut-glass rose bowl centerpiece and Tiffin gold-rimmed Westchester stemware were wedding gifts to Royal’s maternal grandmother in 1915, and the Cromwell 1912 by 1847 Rogers Bros. silver plate was her great-grandmother’s. A: For me, design is inspired by three key factors.

One is the fashion industry; textiles, color and fashion trends lead to interior design trends. The second is nature, where I find harmony, symmetry, color, balance, scale and proportion. Finally, I have a passion for travel, from Manhattan to Malibu, from Paris to Milan. Europe is the cutting-edge source of design trends, but the more exposure you get to different customs and countries, the deeper your creative well.

Q: What are the latest trends in your industry?

A: Design is definitely transitioning into a cleaner look and feel. Backgrounds are becoming much lighter and more neutral, using layers of texture.

A punch of color comes with accessories, pillows, area rugs and art. Bringing in nature and incorporating outdoor living is very important. Bigger outdoor kitchens, patios and outdoor luxury items

will continue to be the rage. There are different color palettes for different personalities. That’s why it is essential to conduct a design profile with every client. Personalization of the homeowners own style is key, allowing the space to reflect their personality, history and experiences.

Q: What is your area of specialization?

A: We specialize in high-end residential interior design, furniture, model merchandizing, custom cabinetry, accessories and installation. From the concept stage through the building process, we provide turnkey design and project management. We have designers with varying styles, and collaborating allows us to achieve award-winning results. This approach leads to creative solutions in tune with each client’s desires. A: I wanted this vacation home to be comfortable for a young Midwest couple with four children who love a traditional feel but wanted elements that played off of the home’s tropical location on the Gulf of Mexico. A. Mixing metals: For years, silvers (chrome, brushed nickel, platinum) have been dominating the interior design industry, but now gold tones are making a comeback! More designers are using

brushed/satin brasses rather than the traditional polished brass on lighting, plumbing fixtures, cabinetry hardware, etc. Look for the mixing of silvers and golds in the latest home decors.

Springing the jam-packed saturday october 20 in motion at 9 a.m. is the American Cancer Society (ACS) 5k walk Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in cambier park. The official rallying cry of “Put on Your Pink Bra” means a sea of bedazzled rose-colored numbers layered over tank tops will be on parade. Retail Therapy Saks Fifth Avenue Naples’ annual Key to the Cure (KTTC) charity shopping weekend, October 18-21, kicks off with a celebration in the store on October 18 hosted by Blue Martini. Shoppers will be treated to drinks, hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment and fashions modeled by survivors and their daughters. Along with a portion of the total weekend sales revenue, all proceeds in Naples from the purchase of the Saks 2012 KTTC T-shirt, designed by Carolina Herrera and sported by spokeswoman Penelope Cruz, will go to the local Bosom Buddies Breast Cancer Support Inc. Now through January 20, 2013, the Patty & Jay Baker Naples Museum of Art (thephil.org) presents an experiential, interactive exhibition, Fletcher Benton: The Artist’s Studio. Many studies have shown that children who participate in the arts are better academic achievers. No wonder so many doctors are polished musicians—and why the Physicians’ Talent Showcase, presented by The Steinway Piano Society, has become such a hot ticket each fall for the last seven years.

The eighth edition October 9 will again feature docs from Lee and Collier counties performing on stage at Naples’ Sugden Community Theatre. The medical marvels sing and play jazz, rock, country and classical music for more than just the delight of the crowd: Proceeds benefit the Neighborhood Health Clinic, which has received more than $155,000 from the performances to date.

Double Time As the curtain rises on its seventh season, Gulfshore Playhouse brings “Reza in Rep,” two Tony Award-winning one-act comedies by Yasmina Reza, ‘Art’ and God of Carnage, to the stage in the Norris Center October 20 through November 18.

At the heart of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) sits a bustling student union that’s become the center of campus engagement.

Dedicated in January, the 75,000-squarefoot facility was funded by a $3 million gift from Janet Cohen in honor of her late husband and their daughter Fran, both of whom passed away within the last two years.

At the ribbon cutting, the building was officially dubbed the Harvey and Janet Cohen Center, but it soon took on an affectionate nickname.

“When I am on the campus, students come up to me and tell me I look familiar,” Cohen says. “Then they ask, ‘Are you the lady who gave the money for Harv’s Place?’

The center is alive, and it is so much fun to see the youth congregate there. I think Harvey and Fran would be very pleased.”

FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw is also happy with the results. “When students are involved beyond the classroom, they develop enduring friendships, lifelong leadership skills and the values of civility, cooperation and caring,” he says. “The Cohens found particular worth in fostering these initiatives that typically occur in a student union, as all were important to their own success.”

The Cohens also played a large role in the building of NCH North Naples Hospital; patients and guests who come to the center enter through the Cohen Lobby.

Janet supports the Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida as well. “People of all religions should be reminded of what happened during World War II,” she says. “Tragically, what happened then still happens today. We must remember the lessons of the past.”
