As you flip through this issue, you’ll notice there’s something different. It’s the look, the feel, and a whole lot more. After five years, it was time for a redesign of the magazine, and the results can be seen on every page—a cleaner, sleeker style than ever before.

We’ve reorganized several departments to make it easier to go straight to the categories and types of stories you look for every month. Plus, we’ve added new pieces to Insider. For example, we live in paradise yet often don’t take advantage of the many ways to explore our own town. Why is that? Why not act like you’re on vacation? Turn to page 21 for “Tourist for a Day,” where we showcase Naples and the surrounding area through the eyes of our visitors.

Every issue, we’ll highlight a different slice of paradise and three super fun ways to enjoy it. Also in Insider, we’re introducing a segment titled “What I’ve Learned” (page 20), which focuses on life lessons from notables in our community who have gems of wisdom to share.

Q&A: WAYNE HOFFMAN

Mind Games

Raised in humble beginnings in Reading, Pennsylvania, acclaimed mentalist Wayne Hoffman discovered a passion for his craft after receiving a magic spell at age 8. As a mind reader and magician, his big break came on the TV show Phenomenon more than a decade ago, and he later performed on numerous national programs, from The Ellen DeGeneres Show to the popular daytime talk show Pickler & Ben. There is always a cacophony of oohs and aahs after he has read the minds of guests at events like Naples Botanical Garden’s April Foolin’ in the Garden and Naples Winter Wine Festival vintner dinners. Based in Naples, Hoffman will perform September 26, for an evening at Venue Naples that includes a gourmet dinner by Crave Culinaire. (waynehoffman.com) NI: What sparked your interest in magic?

Hoffman: As a kid, I was always into the mysterious, psychic powers, aliens, anything strange. I would ride my bike to Mingus Magic Shop and hang out with magicians, mind readers, and sword swallowers. My first paid performance was when I was 15, and I’ve never done anything else. I love entertaining people and watching them leave reality and have a good time, whether it’s for an hour during my show or 60 seconds doing something quick one-on-one.

How do you do it?

It’s having a [mental] toolbox that I’ve collected over the years. I started to profile people in categories.

If I can figure out what category you fit into, I can figure out how you think, then figure out what you’re thinking and implant thoughts into your head. I think I’m fairly intuitive and can read people well; combine that with study and practice and you get where I am.

MYRA JANCO DANIELS Naples philanthropist and cultural stalwart shares life lessons, the importance of giving, and the surprising power of questions

Can you turn it off when you’re not performing—or are you constantly sizing things up?

I work hard to figure out what people are thinking.

There’s a lot involved, but the hardest part is making it look like I’m doing absolutely nothing. And it does seep into my daily life in small quantities. If someone is lying to me, the majority of the time I can instantly tell. It’s a gift and a curse.

If you weren’t a mentalist, what would you do?

Something in the world of art. I’m an art collector and I paint. I do black-and-white pencil sketches, typically portraits, and I do mixed media and acrylics, typically abstracts.

You also wrote a self-help book.

What inspired you to do that?

A lot of people go through life not living the life they want but having a lot of expectations, goals, and dreams. The problem is we’re not taught how to accomplish goals, we’re taught how to do tasks. I was raised in what was once ranked the poorest city in the United States per capita, yet I had this crazy dream of being a mind reader and magician. The stats on me being successful were slim to none, but I’ve done it. In my book, Mind Candy: The Power and Potential of the Human Mind (2012), I focus on mind hacks to help change the lens through which you view the world. It’s a set of tools to turn visions into reality. I get emails from people all over the world telling me it has changed their lives, which is super awesome.

Philanthropist Myra Janco Daniels learned the joy of giving as a first-grader when her grandmother gave her 50 cents and encouraged her to give part of it away— or give it back. “I went to bed that night and thought about two kids at school who sat in front of me and had holes in their shoes,” recalls Daniels, now 93. “I secretly put a dime in each of their desks and wrote a note that said: ‘To a friend, from a friend.’ They were so excited. I saw what joy two dimes meant.”

Sharing would become a constant for Daniels. At 24, she opened an advertising business on a shoestring and made $1 million by the end of the year. “I gave back to [my employees] before I took anything,” she says. “Sharing at every level is very important, though I’d rather be a silent giver.”

Daniels later married Draper Daniels (who in part inspired the Don Draper character in the TV series Mad Men), and they settled in Marco Island. The week before his death in 1983, he asked what she would do when he was gone. That’s when she was inspired to open an arts center because “a community without the arts is a community without soul.” She found that soul by establishing what would become the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts (now Artis—Naples).

Daniels still embraces every project as she embraces life—with bold fervor. Most recently, she chaired a capital campaign to build the Salvation Army Youth Center for Latchkey Children, among her many charitable endeavors. Here, she shares life lessons in an edited interview with NI. Success secret: If you want a goal, you have to move away from all the tricks on the road that might lure you away from achieving it.

Biggest challenge: Losing my husband to cancer. He was my everything, my business partner, my best friend. I think I was a survivor of a lot of mourning by having the opportunity to do something, get busy, and

get lost. I have said to others you can’t just mourn. In their honor, you have to do something, go on, open a new chapter.

On problem-solving: When I get a little moldy around the seams, I take a walk on the beach, ask myself questions to recognize where I might have stubbed my toe, and get back on track. Questions like, “Where am I needed?” It’s amazing when you hear the waves on the beach how you can solve problems. There’s an answer to everything, though it may not be what you want to hear.

On finding inspiration: I have to give my grandmother a lot of credit for telling me things I didn’t think of as a little girl and helping me to see that I could do more.

Advice to her younger self: Don’t take yourself so seriously. I was all business. You have to laugh at yourself once in a while. And think about what you’re doing for your world.

You have to keep new things in your life.

Most valuable lesson: Everyone has to give if they want to get. And not just money; it’s giving of yourself and time. I wake up every morning asking myself, “Where do I go to make a change?” My dear grandmother taught me there is always a need you can fulfill. Sometimes when people retire, they retire from life when they don’t have to. You don’t have to be lonely. There is something to do.

These boutiques offer sophisticated Italian STYLE and IMAGINATION

By Carla Evans Upon entering Casanova Fashion and Art in the Village on Venetian Bay, Naples, one can’t help but wonder: Is this a fashion boutique or an art gallery? It’s actually two businesses under one roof, owned by Keith Davison and Marina Montmorency, the husband-and-wife team who first began mixing art with fashion 13 years ago.

Behind door number one is Casanova Art (casanovaart.com). When you wander through the aisles of whimsy, curiosity guides you through a labyrinth of glass, Venetian masks, gilded mirrors, one-of-a-kind artworks, and chuckling clowns made of blown Murano glass that give a nod to childhood memories.

“When I visit Italy once or twice a year, I travel to the manufacturers’ showrooms and when I see a piece that is exceptional, I purchase it without hesitation,” Davison says. “I buy from 40 glass blowers, most from Murano; in Venice, I have seven jewelry makers and five families who make my Venetian masks.”

A Kalea Bay condo is as striking as the uninterrupted views

For interior designer Mercedes Courland, the location was as big an inspiration as her client’s 4,000-square-foot condominium.

When Courland first saw the new, four-bedroom residence, it was a blank canvas. “Except for the [recycled, wide-plank oak] wood flooring that runs throughout, everything was painted white and looked sterile,” she says.

“When I first walk into a space, I identify focal walls and put color and texture on those.”

Courland’s unusual, high-impact textures begin at the entry, where a dimensional pressed-wood panel gives the illusion of coral. “I wanted to create a harmonious and seamless feel, as if the sea were following me into the condo,” she says. The wall sculpture, which tends on the modern side of transitional, is rendered in sky blue, introducing the color palette as prominent throughout the space.

The textured approach extends to the living room, where Courland designed a coffered ceiling with high-gloss white recesses to reflect the sea inside. The room is styled in cream tones with blue accents on a pair of recliners, accessories, and art. For another focal point, Courland placed two large walnut cabinets under the 85-inch, flat-screen television. Both are polyesterized for durability and have mother-of-pearl doors for a touch of shimmer.

The kitchen is sleek and minimalist, giving the impression of a furnished room rather than a functional space. White semigloss cabinets and manmade white quartz counters lend a feeling of openness, while a backsplash of woven gray and brown stone, King Louis barstools, and antique lighting add warmth.

In the dining room, a trompe l’oeil wallpaper from Europe replicates oldfashioned wall panels from an English estate. For added dimension, Courland installed a display shelf, and for continuity, she brought in dining chairs and a chandelier that echo the style of pieces used in the kitchen. Beneath the chandelier is a rough-hewn, reclaimed Russian wood dining table that provides a rustic counterpoint to the contemporary lines of the adjacent kitchen.

From the dining area, a glass door leads out to a balcony that wraps around the curved building—and is large enough to accommodate a crowd. Courland imbued the exterior area with accents that recall the interior. “The porcelain ‘wood look’ tile floor on the balcony matches the real wood floor inside for a seamless flow,” she notes.

The master bedroom is one of the most striking rooms in the house. With the push of a button, striped draperies open to a panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico and a private balcony that connects to the main terrace.

Behind the white chenille headboard, French wallpaper composed of metallicized wood slivers glimmers in the morning light. The color palette is echoed in a striated gray rug, accent pillows, and trim. Even the modular wall speakers, part of the client’s sophisticated sound system, coordinate with the room’s vibe.

A combination of hard and soft finishes lends tension to the design. “I like to use fuzzy textures with smooth wood and metal,” Courland says. “It’s a yin and yang sort of thing.”

What small touch can elevate the cocktail experience?

Definitely garnishes and the presentation in the chosen glass for a specific cocktail. Get creative when cutting fruit slices or wedges, or even when using craft scissors to cut a shape into an orange or lemon. Guests drink with their eyes first, so a beautiful garnish or specific glass will only increase the enjoyment.

What is trending in mixology?

Ice. The type of ice used at home is drastically different than commercial machines used at res-

taurants and bars. At-home ice is white because it is full of air bubbles and melts faster, while the ice at establishments is clear, free of any air, and more consistent for drinks. Purchasing ice is the easiest way to get clear ice to use at home. It can come in a variety of shapes or even as a block of ice to chip out the size you need. There are also molds that make larger cubes with less air bubbles.

arcelona captivates the imagination.

It’s a city built on the wildest dreams of architects and artists, businessmen and vagabonds. Its rise as a tourism mecca and beloved port on the cruise ship circuit has often been attributed to the 1992 Olympic games, which renewed worldwide interest in this capital of Catalonia nestled on Spain’s northeast coast. But the story of modern Barcelona begins more than a century ago, when crea-

tives from all disciplines turned it into a playground for design, culture, gastronomy, and commerce.

Take, for instance, the Majestic Hotel & Spa (hotelmajestic.es), a totem of Spanish hospitality grandeur that marks 100 years of service in 2018. In celebration, guests can dine on a special centenary menu culled from the hotel’s culinary archive. Available this year during Friday dinner hours at Restaurant SOLC,

walk the fields and perhaps indulge in an irresistibly fresh creation made on-site, such as just-shucked peas boiled in cava, a ubiquitous Spanish sparkling wine.

This commitment to experiential luxury travel is palpable throughout the Majestic, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World.

Throughout its lifetime, the Majestic has been a haven for area artists. Joan Miró is said to have frequented the lobby, in part to commune with works by his mentor, Modest Urgell. Now, the Majestic has partnered with Fundació Joan Miró (fmirobcn.org) to restore a massive tapestry housed at the foundation’s museum. The aptly titled Tapestry of the

Fundació is part of a permanent exhibition of 150 pieces that chronicle Miró’s evolution.

One need only sit surrounded by The Hope of a Condemned Man, a 1974 triptych prompted by the Franco government’s arrest of an anarchist, or gaze upon Sun, Moon, and One Star, the veins of Barcelona serving as the backdrop to this quirky sculpture, to appreciate Miró’s singular creative spirit.

A Barcelona native, Miró’s development and legacy is intrinsically tied to Catalonia.

And while Fundació Joan Miró studies his output, Fundació Mas Miró (masmiro.com) offers insight into the man. The Majestic organizes tours to this country estate in Mont-roig del Camp, where Miró spent his summers. It comprises a series of buildings as white as a clean canvas and a working farm where carob, olive, lemon, and almond trees line dirt lanes.

Mas Miró opened to the public this spring, and it’s perfectly preserved to reflect Miró’s daily life. Even his studio—where the artist would transform the landscapes surrounding him into fauvist and, later, surrealist and abstract masterpieces—looks as it did in September 1976, right down to the calendar on the wall.

If Miró is Barcelona’s signature artist, then Antoni Gaudí is its ultimate architect. An unfailing perfectionist, Gaudí was at the forefront of the Modernisme movement, and his nature-inspired, overly adorned approach is visible across the city. Two works, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà, are equidistant from the Majestic. The former is most famous for its facade that represents a battle between Saint George and a dragon. The latter was envisioned as an apartment complex with a stone exterior reminiscent of a wave. Visitors to Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, can explore top to bottom, from the rooftop crowned with

ventilation towers disguised as soldiers, to the fourth-floor apartment frozen in time to depict early 1900s bourgeois life.

Out of Barcelona’s 14 Gaudí structures, the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia is the most recognizable. Gaudí devoted the last 40-plus years of his life to its design and construction, but only saw a small portion of it completed before he was unceremoniously run over by a trolley. Work still continues on this symbol of the city, which incorporates traditions from both Gothic and Byzantine cathedrals. The goal is to have it all finished—18 towers total—by 2026, to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Gaudí’s death. In the meantime, the entire basilica remains open. And if you think the artistry is limited to the outside, just wait until you witness the prismatic glory that lies within.

On the other end of the Gaudí spectrum is Casa Vicens, the architect’s first home in Barcelona and his most recent site to welcome sightseers. A stark contrast to Sagrada Familia, Vicens is about as subdued as Gaudí gets. That is to say, it structurally resembles a traditional home but sports countless decorative elements that keep eyes dancing. Geometric woodwork protects the porch from the sun. Floral tiles and checkerboards of green and white create a dynamic discordance. Trompe l’oeil nature scenes dance across ceilings and walls. Papier-mâché pieces in indigo cap an Islamic-style smoking room.

It’s a lot of look, and a lot of fun.

BMW’s newest M5 couples 600 horsepower with allwheel drive to deliver a true Ultimate Driving Machine

By Howard Walker I’m channeling my inner Tom Cruise. Not the T.C. in tighty-whities and cotton socks bopping to “Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll” in Risky Business.

No, this is action-man Cruise in full Ethan Hunt mode, at the helm of a 600-horsepower 2018 BMW M5, slippin’, slidin’, and chargrillin’ rubber on the streets of Paris in the latest Mission Impossible romp, Fallout.

Any heart-pounding adrenaline rush you might experience watching Cruise hurl the Beemer through turn after turn, outrunning the bad guys, can be easily replicated. Simply charge $104,595 to your Amex Centurion, press the start button, and floor it.

This new M5 can lunge off the line and race from zero to 60 mph in a neck-distorting 2.8 seconds—basically the same time as a McLaren 720S supercar. The way it punches a hole in the atmosphere all the way up to its 163-mph max speed is just breathtaking. Literally.

This is what happens when you shoehorn a testosterone-fueled twinturbo 4.4-liter V-8 under the hood and hook it up to an eight-speed dualclutch automatic that shifts gears faster than you can flick on a light bulb.

Yes, M5s have always been crazy-fast. The 2005 iteration with that screaming 500-hp V-10 verged on insanity. But this latest version is the first to come with all-wheel drive as standard. BMW’s engineers have calibrated the system so that, for most of the time, pretty much all of the 44 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

power gets channeled to the rear wheels. As any enthusiast will tell you, 600 hp and rear-wheel drive equals big fun.

The difference here is that when things get out of hand or squirrelly at the back, chunks of the V-8’s 553 pound-feet of torque are channeled to the front wheels and order is restored. If you have a degree in computer sciences, you can even program one of five settings in the M5’s iDrive system to vary the degree of torque split. But I never studied at MIT, so it baffled me. I left the car to its own devices.

In reality you really need a racetrack to stretch the envelope of the M5’s handling capabilities. On a typical twisty backroad, this BMW obediently goes where it’s pointed, attacking corners with laser-like accuracy and changing directions like a spooked gecko. Talk of understeer or oversteer is meaningless.

The sheer majesty of the car’s suspension tuning, the precision and feel of its steering, the awesome stopping power of the cross-drilled ceramic brakes make this M5 worthy of the description “Ultimate

See it in the metal and it certainly doesn’t shout about its sporting pedigree. At a glance, it looks pretty much like any other 5-Series with big rims. But I love its stealthy subtlety and the way small details speak of the car’s latent muscularity. Just gaze at those huge intakes beneath the chrome-edged kidney grilles, the discreet M5 badging behind the front wheels and on the trunk lid, and the quartet of tailpipes sprouting from the rear bumper.

Inside, the cabin is a masterpiece of quality, top-notch materials, and best-of-the-best fit and finish. Sitting in the adjustable front sports seats

is like being held in a John Cena body lock. And no one else produces instruments and dials with the clarity and size of BMW. JIM BLOOM A self-described “refined country boy,” Jim Bloom has served Collier County for more than 20 years. As chief of operations for the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Bloom deals with crises on a daily basis but credits the strength of citizens for getting through tough times, like last year’s Hurricane Irma. “I realized it was the members of our community and the pride that we take in being Collier-strong that makes Naples so special,” he says. His role in law enforcement has allowed him to tackle an array of assignments, including working with at-risk youth. He continues to shape next-gen Naples as a board member for the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Collier Foundation, which seeks to energize a network of local leaders to address public interest issues. There’s one organization, however, that will always have his heart: The Make-A-Wish Foundation. “There is no greater feeling than seeing a child receive their wish,” he says. “It is one of the most gratifying experiences of my life.”

Words to live by: Do the right things, for the right reasons, at the right time, and everything else will fall into place. His hero: My father. He devoted his entire life to his country and family. PATRICK O’CONNOR Patrick O’Connor finds his greatest fulfillment when the efforts of a good deed come to fruition. A resident of North Naples for 20 years, he has served as chair of the Do the Right Thing program, vice president of the Collier County 100 Club, a guardian for the Collier County Honor Flight, and was named Outstanding Collier Citizen of the Year in 2016.

But the nonprofit he most admires is Youth Haven, because of its dedication to helping area children. “Youth Haven focuses on giving children their childhood back, and I support this organization because no child should need to worry about housing, food, or safety issues,” says O’Connor, whose mother grew up in an orphanage in New Orleans. When he’s not volunteering or working as a realtor/broker associate for Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, he can be found competing in triathlons across the country and, during the holiday season, along the Naples Christmas Holiday Parade route—in full costume.

TIM CARTWRIGHT As chairman of the Tamiami Angel Funds, which supports Florida-based startup businesses, Tim Cartwright’s efforts have greatly improved the lives of Immokalee residents and its economy. Last year, he was instrumental in the creation of Collier County’s first impact investment initiative, the Tamiami Angels Charitable Investor Program, which allows investors to donate to the Community Foundation of Collier County in order to purchase shares in Taste of Immokalee.

Founded by Immokalee High School students, Taste of Immokalee is a benefit corporation that helps students develop business and leadership skills while also giving back to the community.

These types of programs speak to Cartwright’s business and financial acumen as a partner at Fifth Avenue Advisors, and he’s put that experience to use as a board member for the Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation and a former chair of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples.

JOEL WALTZER Joel Waltzer is proof that you can turn the toughest of times into a powerful beacon of hope that extends further than one could imagine. In 2013, his wife, Jane, was battling breast cancer. An avid yoga practitioner, Waltzer created a grassroots yoga fundraiser to benefit the Cancer Alliance of Naples. JaneCAN was born out of these efforts, and even after Jane’s passing in 2016, the annual YogaCAN event carries on her legacy. In its five-year history, YogaCAN has raised more than $250,000. Through his struggles, Waltzer, a board-certified dermatologist, has found strength in being vulnerable. “During my yoga teacher training, I became present to the idea that I did not need to put on a front that ‘all is well,’” he says. “At times, life can be extremely difficult, and it’s okay to feel that and share that.” Now, he’s focusing on navigating life as a single parent to three daughters and searching for more ways to be of service to those in need.

JEFFREY BINDER From the moment Jeffrey Binder stepped onto a Broadway stage, he felt a sense of belonging to something greater than himself. He pursued that feeling for 15 years, starting with the Tony Award– winning play Side Man in New York and London.

During this time, he also played Zazu the Bird in The Lion King, Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins, and was a member of the original cast of The Lieutenant of Inishmore. On screen, he portrayed a recurring character in the Glenn Close–led television show Damages. He joined Gulfshore Playhouse as its associate artistic director three seasons ago, and this past spring his play, Scapino, became the highest grossing show in the theater’s 14-year history. In addition to acting, playwriting, directing, and teaching, he’s devoted to fundraising for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and local scholarships to help kids in need take advantage of Gulfshore Playhouse’s education programs.

Next up? He’s thrilled to participate in Gulfshore Playhouse’s capital campaign to build a theater and education complex in downtown Naples.

Superpower wish: I’d like to be like Elizabeth Montgomery in Bewitched, complete with Agnes Moorehead and Paul Lynde as sidekicks. MERCEDES-AMG PROJECT ONE When the Mercedes-AMG Project One goes on sale in 2019, it will cost an eye-watering $2.8 million. But the wait and price will be worth it when drivers slide behind the wheel of this 1,000-horsepower, manic Mercedes flagship powered by a Formula 1 engine mated to four electric motors. This wild-child hybrid-electric hypercar is a double-whammy way for Mercedes to showcase its passionate involvement in Formula 1 racing and the capabilities of its ever-expanding AMG division. Powering this hip-high two-door is a F1-derived 1.6-liter turbo V-6 in the back that can develop over 700 hp and is happy to rev to more than 11,000 rpm. As for that quartet of electric motors, one is integrated into the turbocharger, another is bolted to the engine, and two more power the front wheels. You can expect the performance to be insane, with zero-to-60 acceleration in around 2.6 seconds and a top speed of close to 220 mph. Mercedes plans to build just 275 cars with pretty much every one already sold.

NIO EP9 For an electric supercar company most buyers have never heard of, China-based NIO has achieved a lot with its all-electric EP9 hypercar. Like setting a new lap record at the famed Nürburgring track in Germany. And then yet another one for self-driving cars at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

So, what exactly is an EP9? It’s a new all-electric supercar with a megawatt of power—that’s equivalent to 1,341 horsepower, which is enough to zoom it from standstill to 60 mph in around 2.6 seconds and on to a gearing-limited top speed of 194 mph. Max range is quoted at 265 miles. Six EP9s have been built and sold to NIO investors at around $1.2 million each, with another 10 in the pipeline for sale to enthusiasts. So far, they’re only designed for use on the racetrack. But supercars are just the icing on the cake for NIO, part of the huge Chinese NextEV group. They see a future in autonomous electric cars, and recently announced plans to have one in production in the U.S., the NIO EVE, by 2020.

This is the Blade Runner of supercars. Futuristic, rational, and rather otherworldly. One minute, you’re whirring around in full-stealth electric mode, the next you’re spearing toward the horizon, juiced by a magical 573-hp combo of twin-turbo V-6, a trio of electric motors, and a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic. Did we mention it can race from zero to 60 in under 3.0 seconds, has a 192-mph top speed, and can manage 22 mpg highway? As it’s an Acura, this Ohio-made projectile is happy to play the role of daily driver. It might not have the cache of a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, but at $157,000, it’s also a fraction of the price—and even more lovely to look at. Not to mention, this new NSX has heritage as the spiritual successor of the much-adored original NSX sold in the United States from 1991 to 2005.

RIMAC CONCEPT_ONE Croatia is an unlikely home for a supercar industry, but it’s where newcomer Rimac Automobili creates its stunning Concept_One all-electric, two-seat coupe. Instead of going the hybrid route, with electric motors and a gas engine, Rimac has gone full-electric in order to tap into that instant torque. With reactor-like 90-kWh electric motors at each wheel juiced by a huge battery bank, the Concept_One produces a combined 1,224 horsepower and a staggering 1,200 pound-feet of torque. That translates to a zeroto-60 acceleration of 2.4 seconds, a top speed of at least 220 mph, and a range of around 215 miles with the batteries fully charged. See it in the carbon fiber and it looks almost retro in design, with its rounded lines and an absence of angry race car–like wings and vents. Not that you’re likely to see a Concept_One rolling round your neighborhood; the company has built just eight examples at $1.2 to $1.6 million apiece.

Here is the breathtaking Mercedes-Maybach Vision Concept 6, a dream car from MercedesBenz to showcase how vintage design can oh-so-easily work with all-electric power. Under the never-ending hood of this 20-foot-long two-seater is a plug-in electric drive system that packs a mighty 750 horsepower and offers a range of more than 200 miles in hushed refinement. But it’s the Vision 6’s truly gorgeous styling that sets it apart. PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO S E-HYBRID SPORT TURISMO Honey, we’re gonna need a bigger trunk lid. And this one needs to be large enough to accommodate the longest name badge of any car on the planet: the 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo S EHybrid Sport Turismo. Based on the newest version of Porsche’s stretched-wheelbase Panamera Sport Turismo, this big car has big power, as well as mammoth plug-in hybrid performance. Powering the beast is a 550-horsepower version of Porsche’s mighty 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 gas engine mated to a 136-hp electric motor. Combined, they deliver a massive 680 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque. Pedal to the metal, this roomy, highluxe four-door can rocket from standstill to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and hit a top speed of 192 mph. For trips around the neighborhood in golf cart mode, it’ll whisper along for 30 miles in electric-power only. The PPTSE-HST (a more-than-necessary acronym) is now available from $188,400.

JAGUAR E-TYPE ZERO Back in the swinging ’60s, Enzo Ferrari once described Jaguar’s fetching E-type as “the most beautiful car in the world.” No arguments there. If Signore Ferrari was around today, chances are he’d crown Jaguar’s latest creation as “the most beautiful electric car in the world.” That’s right, an electric E-type. Formed to headline Jaguar Land Rover’s recent Tech Fest in London, the company’s Classic division took a tired 1968 Series 1.5 Etype Roadster and restored it from the ground up. But instead of using the original 4.2-liter straight-six engine, they replaced it with a 295-hp electric powertrain. The cool thing here is that the 40-kWh lithium-ion battery pack sits where the gas motor would go. It’s even around a hundred pounds lighter. Against the clock, the E-type Zero will whiz to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds—a second quicker than the original. Yet it’ll run for around 170 miles on a single charge, and with zero emissions. Want one of your own? Give them a call—but don’t expect much change from $500,000.

Before you ask, no, this is not the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid you could buy back in 2012. Sadly, Fisker Automotive ran out of juice in 2013 after building around 1,000 Karmas. But when the Chinese giant Wanxiang snapped up the tooling in 2014, production switched from Finland to Southern California and the badge changed from Fisker Karma to Karma Revero. The basic bones remain, as does the head-spinning design. Under that mile-long hood there’s a rather humble 2-liter GM-sourced four-cylinder turbo motor that acts as a generator providing wattage to a 21-kWh bank of lithium-ion batteries down the car’s spine. The batteries in turn power the two beefy AC electric traction motors driving the rear wheels. The total power of 403 hp is said to result in zero-to-60 sprinting in 5.4 seconds with 50 miles of electric-only range and 300 miles total on a tank of gas. Inside is where it steps up from Fisker to Revero, with luscious Scottish leather and rich timber lining the four-seat cabin.

TESLA P100D There’s still only one word that can describe the performance of Tesla’s flagship 680-hp P100D—and that’s “astonishing.” Astonishing in the car’s ability to explode from standstill to 60 mph in a crazy 2.4 seconds. Astonishing that the Tesla can run for up to 315 miles on a single charge. Range anxiety?

What range anxiety? While the Model S is now around five years old, it’s still the coolest kid on the block. It’s the poster child for the future of personal transportation with its AutoPilot semiautonomous driving and huge 17-inch tablet infotainment center on the dash. And while some may scoff at us for calling the Tesla a supercar, its ability to deliver this kind of mind-warping, zero-emission performance while still transporting five in comfort puts it in a supercar league of its own. Yes, its $135,000 sticker ($151,000 nicely loaded) could buy a high-end S-Class Merc or BMW 7 Series, but once you’ve driven a P100D with its Ludicrous Plus mode for that warp-speed acceleration, you’ll never go back to fossil-fuelers again.

Repeat after me: Vanda Dendrobium. It might sound like the name of a Russian spy from an old James Bond movie, but it’s actually the title of a new 200-mph electric hypercar from Singapore. While it’s only a concept right now—and a showpiece for Singapore electronics giant Vanda Electrics—the idea is for this scissor-doored two-seater to go into production within a couple of years, with a price tag of around a million bucks. To add to the car’s credibility, Britain’s Williams Advanced Engineering (the company behind Williams Formula 1 and Formula E racing) has been given the task of engineering and building it. The Vanda Dendrobium certainly looks supercar-fast, with its rear-hinged, upward-swinging doors, wrap-over rear spoiler, and Formula 1–style tapered rear. As for performance, the Williams team is currently finalizing its formula, with big electric motors at each wheel, a monster battery bank, and more than 1,000-hp output. outhwest Florida’s natural beauty led Gary Roche to relocate from the Midwest to Naples 25 years ago. The wildlife photographer grew up in Ohio in the 1970s and ’80s, when there was little screen time to vie for and exploring the outdoors was part of an ordinary day.

“I have been fascinated by the nature world for as long as I can remember,” Roche says. “I use my photography to inspire others, as I am inspired by nature and the work of conservationists, as well as other photographers.”

Roche began doing underwater photography in the early 1990s. He later expanded into wildlife photography after purchasing a telephoto lens, and now explores the outdoors with his camera most days of the week.

At Timeless, chef David Nelson’s quest to combine hearty comfort food with light, fresh ingredients comes together in the Southwest Tortilla Chicken Salad. The chicken breast is blackened, served atop white and black quinoa, tossed with heirloom tomatoes, fresh corn, black beans, and avocado, and dressed with a housemade cilantro-lime vinaigrette. The dish is topped with crispy corn tortilla chips and cilantro, and a squeeze of lime finishes and livens the salad. “Good food doesn’t have to be trendy,” says Nelson, “but more and more people are eating quinoa. TREASURE TROVE OF DORONA

Dorona Restaurant, Naples

It all started when Gianluca Bisol, a Prosecco producer, saw four grapevines on an island in the Venetian lagoon and discovered they were a forgotten and near-extinct variety called Dorona. He planted the grapes on the island of Mazzorbo, across from Venice, in 2007, and the tiny production from his 2.5-acre vineyard received international acclaim. It also caught the attention of Fabrizio and Ingrid Aielli, who were getting ready to open an Italian steak house as their third Naples restaurant.

“You could say that Dorona discovered us,” says Ingrid, whose husband is a native of the Venice region. “We were looking for a concept for the restaurant, and we became fascinated with how the vines were brought back to life. It’s a story of rebirth.”

The couple contacted Bisol at his Venissa winery on Mazzorbo, and they became friends. Bisol was the first person to walk through the door of Dorona when the restaurant opened in January, and the Aiellis visited him at the winery this summer.

At Dorona, the namesake wine is available in both its traditional white ($350) and red versions ($320, a blend of Merlot and Carménère) in 500-milliliter bottles. The rare offerings cap a wine list filled with gems from Italy, France, and California. The red Dorona is a graceful accompaniment to any of the restaurant’s 17 cuts of aged beef.

Dorona is one of the few places in the United States where customers can experience the restaurant’s eponymous wine. TIKI BAR, Revisited Tiki culture is experiencing a revival fueled by renewed interest in craft cocktails and, of course, nostalgia.

After sailing the South Pacific, Ernest Raymond BeaumontGantt changed his name to Donn Beach in 1933 and opened Don the Beachcomber in Hollywood, Kane California, America’s first Polynesian-themed restaurant and bar. Victor Bergeron followed with his Trader Vic’s chain, and by the 1960s Polynesian culture was raging across the country. What Tiki bars had in common was exotically presented Chinese food, a large selection of frozen drinks, and a laid-back tropical atmosphere under a thatched roof.

Locally, Harold’s Place (naplesharoldsplace. com) offers a casual, sprawling, poolside Tiki retreat. While the food is classic sports bar (think nachos and burgers), the drink menu is heavy on frozen cocktails. Marco Island’s Dolphin Tiki Bar (dolphintikibar.com) offers sushi along with pub food, and the blenders turn out a steady stream of Mai Tais, margaritas, and daiquiris. At Kane, a Balineseinspired beachfront grill and tiki bar in the JW Marriott (marriott.com) on Marco Island, there’s even a Pupu Platter in the Trader Vic’s tradition. The rum menu lists more than 60 spirits from around the world, organized into tasting flights.

ASIAN INFLUENCE

BOWLED OVER There is no shortage of Asian restaurants in Naples, unless you’re looking for one in the lobby of a hotel.

After Hurricane Irma blew through town last year, Naples Grande Beach Resort closed for renovation. Drawing on the background of executive chef Bader Ali, who had worked extensively in China, the management team reinvented the lobby lounge into a Japanese and pan-Asian restaurant and bar called Mantra.

“The entire concept was developed in 45 days, with some help from corporate,” Ali says. “We love this food, and we had a lot of fun creating the fusion dishes on the menu.”

The nerve center of Mantra is a large bar in the center of the room, equipped with a sushi station and a cooking area for ramen. You can use those noodles as a base for building a bowl, layering it with protein (shrimp tempura, soy ginger chicken, or kushiyaki beef), and extras, such as a sous-vide egg. For the perfect combination of yin and yang, try the hamachi crudo: pristine slices of Japanese yellowtail dressed with blood orange, jalapeño, scallion, and cilantro in a ponzu sauce. Local beers, craft cocktails, and a short but well-chosen wine list complement the menu.

Why do people who give up meat frequently embark on a seemingly endless search for something with the taste and texture of meat?

The frozen food section of the supermarket is everexpanding its vegetarian and vegan alternatives, so it appears the desire to sink your teeth into a hamburger is far from fading.

The latest craze in beef substitutes is the vegan Impossible Burger, created by Silicon Valley startup Impossible Foods. The burger actually “bleeds” when cooked, and it includes heme, a genetically modified protein that causes it to sizzle and smell like meat. However, it is served in several local restaurants. The Counter burger chain offers it nationwide, and the Naples restaurant reports sales of close to 50 on a typical day.

The Wine Loft and Meridian Café in Naples also carry it. In Estero, it’s grilled up at Ford’s Garage and The Saloon.

Italy’s Soave region is home to Pieropan (above), a producer that has persevered through Soave’s waning popularity. Its product line includes the crisp Soave Classico and two single-vineyard offerings, Calvarino and La Rocca.

Two previously popular Italian whites are once again having their moment Like any other fashionable commodity, wine styles go through cycles of popularity. Drinking Merlot may be en vogue one day, but a year later—following the release of the film Sideways— it becomes the vinous equivalent of a Nehru jacket.

Sometimes (as in the case of dry rosé) the category comes back eventually, but the wait can be a long one.

Two familiar Italian whites, Soave and Verdicchio, illustrate the fickle nature of wine popularity. If you’re above a certain age, you’ll remember Franco Bolla. He was a refined and impossibly good-looking Italian gentleman who starred in a series of TV commercials in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In those ads, Bolla linked his family’s white wine, Soave Bolla, to the good life in all its forms. If you drank it, you became as glamorous as Frank Sinatra (who supposedly refused to sit down at a table that did not have Bolla wine).

When the craze faded and the American public turned to California Chardonnay, Soave was forgotten. One producer who survived was Pieropan, a pioneer and trendsetter in the region since 1880.

Pieropan’s Soave Classico ($19) is clean and crisp, with hints of lemon, quince, and stone fruit; it pairs well with finger food, fish, and shellfish.

Pieropan’s two single-vineyard offerings, Calvarino ($29) and La Rocca ($38), are mineral-infused and well-structured, capable of standing up to veal, poultry, and pork.

Building on the success of Pieropan, Giuseppe Inama began buying up choice vineyard parcels in the Soave region during the 1960s. Today his son, Stefano, turns out distinctive Soave Classico ($15) and an impressive vineyard-designated wine, Vigneti di Foscarino ($25). Regardless of whether you choose Pieropan or Inama, we’ve come a long way from Franco Bolla.

Another forgotten Italian white currently experiencing a revival is Verdicchio, which burst onto the American scene in the 1970s. The best-known producer back then was Fazi Battaglia, which made a dry,

straightforward wine that went well with seafood. Forty years ago, it came in a curvaceous green bottle that you could buy for $5-$6 (the equivalent of $12 today).

Verdicchio’s popularity peaked in the mid-1980s and and complex, and its bright texture has been declining slowly since then. Oh, SUGAR!

Cutting sugar from your diet? Don’t toss out the bag just yet. Try using it in a homemade sugar scrub, where it’s actually good for you. Sugar is a natural humectant, so it retains moisture and helps hydrate skin. It’s also a source of glycolic acid that sloughs off old skin cells to keep your complexion radiant. The granules serve as an exfoliant, with the finer texture of white sugar working best for the face and sensitive areas. Coarse brown sugar is used mostly for body scrubs, while raw sugar is especially helpful for rough spots like elbows and heels.

LEMON-ROSEMARY BODY SCRUB Ingredients: B⁄3 cup olive oil 1 cup brown sugar (substitute white sugar for the face) 2 tbsp. lemon zest 2 tbsp. dried rosemary leaves 1 tsp. lemon juice (or essential oil) B⁄c tsp. rosemary essential oil Mix the ingredients thoroughly in a bowl. Apply to wet skin using a circular motion, then rinse. The scrub will last two to three months in a sealed glass mason jar or any airtight container when stored at room temperature.

A Man for all Seasons A startlingly beautiful sculptural installation, The Four Seasons by the internationally renowned contemporary American artist Philip Haas is coming to Artis—Naples beginning this month.

Featuring intricate compositions of vegetables, fruit, branches, leaves, and ivy, these 15-foot human busts of painted and pigmented fiberglass moss are so complex they never reveal themselves the same way twice.

Inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s paintings of the same name, the acclaimed Haas collection has been on a fiveyear, nine-venue tour of museums and gardens throughout the United States and Europe. It will call Artis—Naples home through June 2019. (artisnaples.org)
