SUN’S OUT, FUN’S OUT

It’s summertime, and it’s hot in Naples—really hot. However, I find the penetrating high temperatures oddly therapeutic, at least at times. Besides, it’s good to sweat, right? After surviving 12 brutal Michigan winters, as well as endless—and I mean endless—sunless days, I cheer the rising of the mercury. Even the intense humidity of Naples, weighty enough to bog down a thirsty mosquito or two, doesn’t bother me. I welcome it.

That said, I realize not everyone shares my enthusiasm for Florida’s summer months. Many residents journey north to homes in more moderate climes, where they spend their days upon freshwater lakes or sip lemonade from under hearty deciduous trees.

One well-known Neapolitan choosing to summer outside the Sunshine State is Sue Dalton; she appears on our cover this issue from her lush garden at her Linville, North Carolina, home. It’s been my pleasure to get acquainted with Dalton over the past year or so. A part-time Naples resident since the ’90s, she has committed herself to the Naples community in multifold ways, including through her heavy philanthropic involvement at Naples Community Hospital and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida—among other organizations. Dalton’s Linville home is a stunner. Check out the jaw-dropping mountain vistas from this residence and get to know her a bit more, starting on page 68.

It wouldn’t be summer without a little bit of adventure, and we’re proud to highlight a range of exciting ways to explore Florida—from surf to turf. Whether you’re in search of hiking, biking, horseback riding, or spelunking expeditions or seeking water exploration through surfing, sailing, kayaking, or snorkeling, a plethora of ideas and suggestions await. For those who would rather take in the outdoors above the treetops (or over alligator-breeding grounds), we’ve even assembled a list of thrilling zip-lining opportunities across our state. Flip to page 76 to glean all the Florida-based fun.

The dog days of summer are upon us, but that doesn’t mean we have to hole up at home in the AC for days on end. I hope you make the most of your July and August and find a few ways to take in activities that spur adventure and make memories.

Here’s to soaking up the sun!

THE INSIDE TRACK TO NEAPOLITAN LIVING

SPOTLIGHT A WARM WELCOME

Conductor Alexander Shelley has been named the Sharon and Timothy Ubben artistic and music director of Artis—Naples, where he will provide artistic leadership for Naples Philharmonic, as well as for the entire multidisciplinary arts organization. His appointment as artistic and music director designate began with the 202324 season; he will begin his official tenure in the 2024-25 season, succeeding Andrey Boreyko.

Born in London in October 1979 to celebrated concert pianists, Shelley studied cello and conducting in Germany. He performs across six continents with the world’s finest orchestras and is known for the precision and integrity of his interpretations, his creative programming, and the breadth of his repertoire. He was unanimously selected for his new roles at Artis—Naples due to his leadership from the podium, his confidence in the future role of the orchestra, his innovative approach to multidisciplinary programming, and most importantly, for understanding the role the arts play in the community. Shelley will remain music director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra and principal associate conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, positions he has held since 2015. This is his first titled position in the United States. For a brief interview with Shelley, turn the page. (artisnaples.org) –Gaylene Salomons

A WARM WELCOME Cont.

NI: When did you first conduct the Naples Philharmonic?

Shelley: I had a memorable first encounter with the Naples Philharmonic in February of 2022. My friend, the marvelous French virtuoso David Fray, was soloist for Schumann’s Piano Concerto, and the orchestra and I performed music from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. It is an extraordinary work that manipulates the listener’s perception of time and homes in on the profoundest feelings of passion and longing. The orchestra played with utter commitment, and the audience response was rapturous. On top of this, the Vienna Philharmonic was performing the night I arrived in town, so I had the added bonus of hearing that superb orchestra in the flesh. All in all, it was a special first encounter.

What were your first impressions of Naples? That special combination of a natural paradise and an artistic hub makes a strong first impression. I was immediately struck by the cultural heft of Artis—Naples, which serves as a home to brilliant and growing organizations—the Naples Philharmonic,

the Baker Museum, and the International Film Festival. It’s an increasingly important and respected touring destination for major national and international partners. Coupled with the beautiful charm of downtown, the food, the beaches, and perhaps most importantly, the warmth and generosity of the people, Naples most definitely seduced me. Where is home for you? Will you relocate to Naples? Have your wife, Zoe, and your sons, Sasha and Leo, visited Naples?

My children were born in Canada. We spent their

Selected to Lead

Every year the Professional Golf Association (PGA) selects 15 of its approximate 28,000 members to participate in its exclusive LEAD Program—the association’s leadership development program. This year, Nolan Rheam, head golf professional at Olde Florida Golf Club, made the cut.

Rheam is in his tenth year of managerial work at Olde Florida, where he has served as

the head pro since 2017. “My roles in the golf industry have always been multifaceted,” Rheam says, explaining he has never favored specialization as either a player or instructor. He has had his sights set on LEAD for some time, but he credits Olde Florida’s director of golf, Tom Wildenhaus, with imparting inspiration.

“After seeing the fulfillment he’s gotten from his years of service to the [PGA],” Rheam reflects, “I wanted to make LEAD a real priority.”

That prioritization paid off: Rheam regards his phone call from PGA President John Lindert, announcing that he’d been selected to LEAD’s Cohort VIII, as one of his most significant career accomplishments.

Two months in, Rheam describes LEAD as “educational, productive, and engaging,” saying “it’s great to spend time with an accomplished and driven group of member professionals.” (pga.com) —Corin Mellone

earliest years commuting between there and the UK. Our eldest is now in school in England, so that is currently the focal point of family life. We intend to have a home in Naples and to spend as much time here as allows. For us, building friendships in new communities and in new places is one of the greatest joys and privileges of my profession, so connecting with our Neapolitan family will be a priority.

You were trained in Germany. How many languages do you speak?

I am fluently bilingual in English and German and can get by in French. (Canada’s National Arts Centre, where I am music director, is a bilingual organization.) As for Italian, I have conductor’s use of the language, which means lots of words for music and from idiosyncratic opera librettos. You have conducted and presented many openair events. Do you prefer these over concert halls? Will you encourage and introduce openair events in Naples?

The venue and audience are as much a part of a performance as the music. Or put differently, each piece of music has a different effect in a different setting. I find it very exciting to mix things up, to experience art in unusual contexts and in unexpected places. I also find it exciting to reach new audiences, which can mean seeking them out and adventuring outside the setting of the concert hall. I know that such things will be an important part of the conversation as I build my understanding of the community.

What are you most excited to accomplish in the next four seasons as artistic and music director of Artis—Naples?

I have such immense admiration for what has been built here over the last few decades and am proud to have the opportunity to build on those impressive foundations. Artis—Naples has a reputation as one of the most interesting and forward-looking organizations of its kind, and what we do here is as important now as it ever has been. That combination of strong foundations, ambition for the future, and relevance to our time is invigorating. It is my hope that we can be a source of excitement, interest, adventure, and pride for our community, as well as a beacon for the arts that radiates well beyond state and national borders. —G.S.

FOR THE LOVE OF MAPS

Todd Turrell, an ocean engineer who has spent his career providing marine engineering and environmental consulting services along the waterfront of Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean, is a cartophile. His keen interest in natural history along coastal environments prompted him to found Island Map Publishing in Naples in 2005. The company has since created more than 100 maps and three history books; most recently, they designed and created the Naples Cen-

tennial Map. On March 22, a copy was donated to Naples City Hall and dedicated to the late Lavern Norris Gaynor; a Neapolitan since 1976, she was an enthusiastic community advocate and philanthropist.

The map will be on display at city hall for years to come. Proceeds from map sales will benefit the Naples Historical Society and will specifically fund replacement of the Indian Canal marker signage that was destroyed by Hurricane Ian. The educational marker signs, found in two locations in downtown Naples, inform the public about the historic Indian Canal, an impressive piece of engineering work that is 1.5 miles long, more than 40 feet wide, and 25 feet deep. It once ran from the beach in downtown Naples to Naples Bay, and it is believed that the canal was in use from circa AD 700 to AD 1400.

Unframed Naples centennial maps (that include a dotted line showing the Indian Canal) in either glossy poster paper or fine art canvas are available for purchase in three sizes online. Turrell’s company also offers more than 100 similarly styled maps from waterside

Every year approximately 1.5 million visitors spend an average of 2.23 hours on Fifth Avenue South. Filled with boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries, the picturesque street continues to be a popular tourist destination, offering significant economic contributions to the City of Naples.

The Fifth Avenue South Business Improvement District (BID) has named Meg Stepanian as its new executive director. A resident of Naples since 2004, Stepanian, a graduate of the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, is a seasoned marketing and communications professional with decades of experience in the hospitality and broadcast media industries. She most recently served as director of membership and marketing for the Estero Country Club.

In her new role, Stepanian will lead the BID’s marketing, public relations, and events initiatives. “I enjoy creating strategies that grow revenues and improve the success of organizations, and I look forward to putting my years of experience to work for the BID,” says Stepanian. “I’m very excited to be part of one of the most iconic brands in the nation and internationally.” (fifthavenuesouth.com) —G.S.

You come from a family of leather stylists and artists. How have they influenced your pursuits?

My father opened his first store in the ’60s in Florence. My grandmother was a basket weaver. She taught me all the secrets of old Florentine artisans. I have grown up staying in the store in Piazza Pitti, smelling leather and admiring new creations. I was born to design and craft for everyone. As a child, I was surrounded by fashion, and I often watched my mother create theatrical costumes in America. She is an artist, [and I was] always getting inspiration from her in New York and the Hamptons. Also, my grandmother June was a pianist. Art was around everywhere.

Why did you decide to launch your namesake fashion brand?

It was the natural evolution of the family business, [but] I added my first name in order to be more personal. Not to mention I was the first female in the family to take over the business.

Describe your brand’s philosophy on craftsmanship.

Tell me your dreams and let me bring them to life. This is what it means to create bespoke items. They are pieces of dreams and art. When people come into the store, one of the things that makes me happy is when they say it’s been a wonderful experience. They thank me for fitting for them, no matter what body they have. I believe that

REAL TALK WITH... Jennifer Tattanelli

my clients should not fit my creations—my creations should fit my clients. It’s a very different concept from a normal store. I wanted to bring a bit of Florence to America and the experience of having a one-of-a-kind piece of dreams in your closet.

If you could dress anyone, who would it be and why?

I can dress anyone, that is what matters to me. I can work with anyone to make their dream piece come to life.

What are some pieces in your wardrobe that you can’t travel without?

My Sophia bag, designed with the exclusive intrecciato optical technique; my JT sandals; and my Alba reversible jacket, [which is] lightweight and perfect to travel in style.

What’s next for the Jennifer Tattanelli brand?

Runways and special collaborations. Stay tuned!

DESIGN AND DECOR FOR LUXURIOUS LIVING IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

STÉPHANE AND JENNA

X

“Can I buy you a drink in the clubroom?” It’s a question Stéphane Rambaud often poses to wife Jenna, after dinner at one of their favorite Naples restaurants.

The referenced room is found at their new home situated on a long, winding street on Hidden Bay Canal in the Port Royal neighborhood. Plans for the home, purchased with the lot, detailed a home office on the main floor with western views over the backyard—now containing a wraparound dock, boat, and impressive swimming pool and spa. “Very little work would get done if it were an office,” explains Stéphane.

Instead, the couple obviated the planned formal dining room to the left of the front entrance and turned the space into Stéphane’s office, leaving the glass-walled wine cellar in place— one that houses, in Stéphane’s words, “not a serious collection but a very drinkable one.”

The previously planned office became a private and cozy clubroom that hosts a substantial bar of quartzite, a high-top table and chairs, a dark wood wall, textured gray wallpaper, and artful pendant lighting. This room features a television on one wall, which is enjoyed by the Rambauds while sipping a pre- or post-dinner cocktail. (They purpose-

ly do not have a television in the kitchen or great room.)

Dark wood underfoot throughout the twolevel residence sets the stage for a contemporary home, styled with elegant features, such as sleek custom kitchen cabinets, double islands, and defined wood ceilings in many of the rooms, as well as carefully planned lighting and wall treatments and great abstract art (at least two pieces were created by local artist Danny Geschardt).

Stéphane, a native of France, studied inter-

national business in Paris. He moved to Chicago at 22 years of age for an internship and never left, working in international logistics services, first with Phoenix International and then C.H. Robinson.

Jenna, whom he met in Chicago while she was leading the public relations department with Huron, a management consulting firm, is currently contracted as director of marketing and public relations for Halstatt Real Estate Partners, based in Naples, Florida.

In 2017, the Rambauds moved to Naples and became Florida residents. They purchased a home in Royal Harbor; shortly after relocating, they rode out Hurricane Irma. In 2020, they purchased their Port Royal property. Jenna spent 26 months engaged in every aspect of designing the nearly 6,000-squarefoot home.

Three days after moving into the finished residence, she and Stéphane sat in the clubroom nervously watching the storm surge precipitated by Hurricane Ian cover first the dock and then the pool. Next, the surge crept perilously close to the bottom of the floor-length windows found on the main level of their home before it finally started receding. Although a nail-biting experience, Stéphane and Jenna remark they feel exceedingly grateful about their situation when they see the destruction some people suffered during the storm.

Jenna and Stéphane Rambaud’s nearly 6,000-squarefoot Port Royal home is replete with contemporary materials, textures, art, and finishes. The two-level residence includes a glass-walled wine cellar and an office space for Stéphane (below).

As Stéphane is actively involved with the global Young Professional’s Organization based in Chicago, he regularly visits their residence in Lincoln Park, Illinois; Jenna visits Chicago less frequently. Both have embraced the Naples lifestyle of working out and playing tennis every day, so they can

partake of good food and drink frequently. Although Jenna appreciated every moment of her involvement realizing a new home and would happily do it all over again, the couple have no plans of moving again. They are committed to their stylish residence on Rum Row. «

ROOM ROUNDUP

IN THE OPEN AIR

AS BEAUTIFUL OUTSIDE AS INSIDE

With the advent of automated doors and windows that pocket to create seamless indoor/ outdoor spaces, chic durable fabrics, designer-crafted furniture, state-of-the-art outdoor kitchens, and remote-controlled screens that protect against bugs and the elements, homeowners are making certain their outside seating areas are as beautiful as those inside.

Local home builders and interior designers confirm their clients want a maintenance-free oasis apart from the traditional living quarters where they can entertain, watch the big game, or just relax. Here are five spectacular outdoor spaces shared by local interior designers.

TROPICAL FANTASY

XCollins DuPont Design Group

With a request from the homeowner for an outdoor living area as fun and lively as her three female adult children, designer Sherri DuPont of Collins DuPont Design Group let her creative juices flow.

“The home was inspired by a Mediterranean trip taken by the entire family,” explains DuPont. “Throughout you will see references to the Greek Isles, Morocco, and Sicily, but it is most recognizable in the outdoor living area with colors of turquoise, deep blues, and a background of crisp, clean white.”

To ensure the space—nestled adjacently to the dwelling’s vanishing-edge pool—remained fun and casual, DuPont included two wicker swing chairs and configured a comfy bench seat beneath the wall-mounted television; DuPont’s favorite elements are the recessed niches in the same wall, all hardwired for low-voltage candle lamps. A stained tongue-and-groove ceiling in a warm mahogany color, worry-free white canvas Sunbrella upholstered cushions resting in wrought iron furniture, and a blue-and-white striped rug reinforce the area’s fun holiday vibe. (collins-dupont.com)

RAIN OR SHINE

Renée Gaddis Interiors

Positioned alongside the 67-mile Caloosahatchee River, this reimagined outdoor living area features views that seem to stretch forever; in the evening, the twinkling city lights of Fort Myers add drama. More than a century old, this historic estate home was built by Elizabeth Lauder Kellum, the niece of Andrew Carnegie, and her husband, Med Kellum. In 2020, private owners commissioned Renée Gaddis, principal designer at Renée Gaddis Interiors, to fully restore the stately residence. The outdoor space—with its incredible wide-water views—is defined by a natural quarried bluestone fireplace and a large white motorized pergola ceiling. The wood-burning fireplace adds warmth, as does a rustic beam mantle dividing the light gray brick. Exquisite and comfortable furnishings round out the stunning space.

“This warm and inviting space allows the family to relax around the fireplace while taking in breathtaking views of sunsets along the river,” says Gaddis. (reneegaddis.com)

FOR TWO OR MORE

Beautifully symmetrical, this outdoor living room in Talis Park presides over the eighteenth hole on the gated community’s golf course. The first goal for this often-used transitional space was comfort; the second was entertaining capability. Successfully marrying the two intentions was Melissa Allen, senior interior designer at Romanza Interior Design.

An impressive wood-like ceiling fabricated from tongue-and-groove PVC delineates the space and— although designed to look like fine millwork—very practically withstands the elements. A 96-inch ceiling fan promises the area is always comfortably cool regardless of how many people gather in the space. Seating includes four reclining swivel lounge chairs; a large, comfy sofa; and three refined stools—crafted from reinforced concrete—for extra seating when needed.

“We tend to spend just as much time designing outdoor spaces as we do interior spaces, as so many of our clients utilize these just as much or even more than the interior living areas,” says Allen. “Finding the right balance between use and aesthetics is key to enjoying outdoor living spaces.” (romanza.com)

MAJESTIC SETTING

Harwick Homes

Feeling like an extension of its lush surroundings, this traditional, tropical outdoor living room, created by Harwick Homes, maximizes the fabulous views of Caxambas Bay on Marco Island. Chrissy Howard, former senior designer at Jinx McDonald Interior Designs, left copious amounts of open space to increase the space’s soothing ambience.

XSurrounded by classic coral flagstone, a vent-free gas fireplace reaches a tongue-andgroove cypress wood ceiling. Underfoot, ashlar stone tiles placed diagonally add subtle texture; wicker-style furniture furthers the coastal vibe. Peaceful and serene, this outdoor living room leaves the impression it rose from the water.

“Outdoor areas are meant to bring the outside in and feel like they are part of nature but yet have all the comforts and security of modern living,” states Howard. This space boasts a well-designed outdoor kitchen, cozy fireplaces, ample seating, adequate lighting, and built-in speakers and televisions all enclosed with motorized hurricane shutters and screens for added security and comfort. COTTAGE GEM

Bethany O’Neil Interior Design

The outdoor living area in this cheery residence on Doctors Pass in Naples looks out on a classic all-white pool area and beyond to the dock on the bay. Green Bahama shutters, where palm tree fronds peek playfully through the windows, reinforce the tropical composition.

Inspired by her clients’ upbeat personalities, Bethany O’Neil, owner and principal designer at Bethany O’Neil Interior Design, selected happy patterns in vibrant colors for the home’s interior and exterior. Outdoor curtains—once common and now a novelty—add privacy, a touch of mystique, and a little romance. Three cushy sofas stationed around a large center coffee table invite guests to sit and stay awhile.

“This outdoor area is the primary space for entertaining in the home. Just beyond the porch is another large area that seats up to 12 people for a dinner party. The clients love to entertain, spending the majority of their time in these outdoor rooms,” states O’Neil. (bethanyoneil.com)

DESIGNER DEFERENCE

THOUGHTFUL SPACES

Interior architect Cristian Pinedo has traveled the world creating exquisite interior spaces—from guest and amenity rooms to common areas, like lobbies and hallways—for luxury hospitality group Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA).

In 2015, Pinedo moved to the east coast of Florida to open an HBA office in Miami. In 2021, he opened his own firm, Susurrus International. “Our name means a whisper,” he says, explaining that he focuses on discreet and subtle ways to realize luxury in his designs. Pinedo is now able to focus on only one or two jobs each year, giving more attention to control and quality, sharing that “Key Biscayne is a quiet and relaxing environment for creativity.”

One year ago, he joined the team currently developing The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Naples, a coastal condominium enclave comprising 128 residences planned by Stock Development and scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2025.

Pinedo was tasked with the overall interior design of the common areas. To appeal to a broad range of tastes and backgrounds while creating an interior consistent with a luxury brand, Pinedo composes a distinct narrative associated with the historical, social, and physical elements of each property he is involved with.

Historical insights for the new Naples property include

the fact that it’s nestled in a resort town with a seaside vibe that has Mediterranean influences. Think: exposed wooden beams, stone walls, arched windows, and ceramic tiles. Socially, residents live in the sunshine, enjoying the Gulf of Mexico as the main attraction. And physically, the planned enclave will exist within a very specific estuary boundary, one with unique flora and fauna.

Pinedo produces ambience boards, showcasing various design selections that he believes best interpret these historical, social, and physical insights. For every selection he makes— from a side table in the lobby to light fixtures to the color of a rug—Pinedo refers to the narrative and asks: What are we trying to convey? His goal is to successfully capture the essence of the location in the design.

For example, the atrium and lobby lounge of The Ritz-

Carlton Residences, Naples, will feature a large spiral staircase. Reminiscent of a seashell, “it is coastal and geometric,” says Pinedo. The private movie theater will be a dark and cozy place with a canopied wood ceiling—emulating the interwoven branches of the mangroves in the nearby waters; the spa rooms have a similar look and feel.

“Cristian has surprised us every step of the way,” says Claudine Leger-Wetzel, vice president, sales and marketing, Stock Development. “His creativity is unbelievable, and he is personally and passionately involved with the project.” (susurrus.us)

TUCKED AWAY FROM THE BEATEN PATH, TWO ISLAND RESORTS REDEFINE THE BAHAMAS EXPERIENCE WITH BAREFOOT LUXURY AND HAUTE DESIGN

Let Freedom Ring

A 40-acre boutique resort, The Cove Eleuthera offers guests a secluded paradisical retreat with a luxurious yet friendly feel. Situated on the north end of quiet Eleuthera—one of the less-traversed Bahamian islands—The Cove is just 30 minutes south of North Eleuthera Airport, which is reachable via quick flights from both Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports.

Upon arrival, the resort’s personable staff greets you for check-in. Expect to be called by name and whisked away to one of the property’s 29 guest accommodations, which include one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites, cottages, and beachfront villas. All guest rooms are luxe and well-appointed,

however, you’ll find no flash or fussiness. Clean lines, natural wood elements, and neutral tones ensure there’s no distracting from the native beauty that abounds, including the near-hypnotic turquoise waters found on the resort’s two private beaches. Even the on-site Freedom Restaurant & Sushi Bar and Gregory Town Grill exude a sense of refreshing minimalism that’s fitting for this placid property.

Speaking of the culinary, The Cove offers guests an array of fresh fare. Island-inspired dishes and sushi creations can be found at the Freedom Restaurant & Sushi Bar. Eleuthera is known for its especially fertile soil, and the produce from the resort’s organic garden (available for guests to tour) is put to good use. As for breakfast, it’s difficult to rule out room service, especially when you can savor a morning acai bowl and cappuccino alfresco with Caribbean vistas from your room’s wraparound deck.

Eleuthera’s etymology derives from eleutheros, the Greek word meaning freedom.

It’s a fitting name for this calm, entrancing

haven where you’re uninhibited to while away hours relaxing beachside or by The Cove’s infinity pool, perhaps with a Freedom Style Mojito or Nojito in hand.

That said, if you’re after exploration or adventure, there’s plenty to be had, and the resort’s staff stands ready to assist. Paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling gear, and bicycles are available for use on property; the resort’s boat is also available for day excursions. Off-site—but still on the island—enjoy myriad sights and experiences, from seahorse watching at Sweetings Pond, to a soak in pools naturally formed by the Atlantic at Queen’s Bath, to a swim in the Sapphire Hole, an underwater sinkhole filled with azure water. There’s also historic Preacher’s Cave, where you can visit the site of an English shipwreck.

Sometimes, the most productive thing to do is relax—to slow down. Eleuthera and The Cove offer travelers a respite from life’s hustle and bustle. It’s the perfect paradise to refocus the mind and rekindle the spirit. (thecoveeleuthera.com) —Jane

Inspired Reinvention

After landing on the dusty airstrip at Congo Town and driving through a part of the Bahamas that time forgot, pulling into Caerula Mar Club feels like entering an oasis. Whitewashed cottages with wide porches sprout from the sand. Organic shapes and driftwood tones impart an immediate sense of serenity. Hammocks slung across palm trees sway in lazy breezes. And every path leads to the sea.

It wasn’t always like this. The Emerald Palms hotel, originally built in the 1960s, had been abandoned for some years and fallen victim to the whims of weather. While vacationing on South Andros Island in 2017, Sarah and Bryan Baeumler saw the derelict property

and its 10 acres of waterfront and bought it on the spot. Their plan: to transform the place into Andros’ first true luxury resort. It didn’t hurt that they were an HGTV Canada power couple—he a contractor, she a design wiz— with several renovations under their belts.

The Baeumlers’ journey, which they turned into a “huge family adventure” by moving to the island with their four young children, was chronicled on the HGTV show Renovation Island. For three seasons, viewers were riveted as the couple found solutions for issues ranging from bad plumbing to a major hurricane.

Sarah’s plan was to create a tropical idyll with all the island feels and none of the pretense. The Signature Collection private villas, available in one- or two-bedroom configura-

tions, blend traditional Bahamian architecture with mid-century modern style for a sophisticated take on island living. Bleached oak floors and materials like aged marble, natural woods, and rush have an organic sensibility. Light-suffused rooms are decorated simply—a white bisque vase here, a stylized branch there—in a sand-toned palette that lends itself to a relaxed atmosphere. French doors open to woodplanked porches for lounging, entertaining, or contemplative moments in nature. Step down and find yourself on the sand, mere paces from the Bahamas’ famous turquoise surf.

Every detail is an immersion in island living, down to the smallest accessory. “We love supporting Androsian entrepreneurs,” Sarah says. “From homemade coconut soaps by Sha-

Design’s purpose is to set a tone for living, and here the tone is conducive to languid beach days under the shade of palms, strolls along the shoreline, and biking The Queen’s Highway, South Andros’ only road. It ignites the desire to swim in blue holes, which are plentiful around the island, or take a boat to a deserted beach for coral-reef snorkeling (we saw nurse sharks, stingrays, and a sea turtle), with a chef’s picnic to round out the day. Or the ambition to hook a bonefish, which will make you earn your stripes as an angler. Whatever your passion, Caerula Mar is both the backdrop and the inspiration for an authentic Bahamian holiday. Paradise Coast PAMPERING SAY “SPAHHH” AT THE NAPLES GRANDE BEACH RESORT

Sometimes you just need to decompress. When that moment strikes, head to the Naples Grande Beach Resort, which beckons with amenities from water sports to golf and beyond. The star of the show, however, is perhaps the all-natural and organic Spa at Naples Grande.

Following Japanese tradition, the spa complex is set among lush greenery, relaxation areas, and soothing water features, dotted by four treatment pavilions. The standout among them is the Signature Villa, where guests can book a Retreat package for individuals, couples, or small parties. After indulging in a massage followed by a salt bath float or scalp massage, you’ll have the building all to yourself—complete with an infrared sauna, plunge pool, and private sundeck.

You could also go high-tech with one of the spa’s nontraditional options like cryotherapy (targeted treatments or whole-body options), vibroa-

coustic electromagnetic and infrared (VEMI) bed therapy that mimics the body’s own frequencies to induce a deep meditative state to recharge and detoxify cells, or an Avacen session, which uses heat to increase microcirculation and enhance oxygen delivery to muscles. In between appointments, unwind in the sanctuary of the indooroutdoor spa village, with its sundeck, wading pool,

thermal pool, steam room, meditation lounge, and walking labyrinth for a full day of relaxation for mind and body.

After such spa sensations, book a table at the Naples Grande’s signature restaurant, The Catch of the Pelican, where dishes are both locally and seasonally focused. Most of the produce used is grown in the hotel’s kitchen garden, and seafood is sourced from local day boats.

After dinner is the ideal time to head to the resort’s 3-mile stretch of whitesand beach adjacent to Clam Pass Park. Make your way along the charming boardwalk for a leisurely stroll through the mangrove-laden estuary. In a hurry? Hop a ride on the golf cart trolley or borrow a bicycle. If you time it right, you can grab a drink at beachfront bar Rhode’s End and settle in to ooh and aah at a stunning sunset over the Gulf of Mexico. (naplesgrande.com) «

BREATH OF FRESH AIR

LUCID’S BATTERY-POWERED AIR GRAND TOURING PACKS 819 HP AND CAN RUN 516 MILES ON A CHARGE—BUT THERE’S A CATCH

See this swoopy, all-electric sedan racing down the street and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was some futuristic auto show concept or an extra from Blade Runner 2049 with a grizzled Harrison Ford behind the wheel.

The gorgeous, sweeping arc of its all-glass roof. The towering waistline with more taut, tense muscles than Seabiscuit in his prime. The cool laser light show from its wafer-thin LEDs. This is the Lucid Air, the firstborn of Silicon Valley start-up Lucid Motors, run by the same Brit

who engineered the Tesla Model S for Elon.

Currently, Lucid offers four—soon to be five—versions of the Model S–size Air. The range kicks off with the 480-hp Pure at $87,400 and soars to the upcoming Air Sapphire, with an insane 1,200-plus hp and quarter-of-amillion price tag.

The midrange Air Grand Touring (starting at $138,000) boasts two rather astonishing numbers. The first, 819, is the horsepower from its dual electric motors, which can deliver stand-

still to 60-mph acceleration in 3 seconds flat. Then there’s 516, which is the number of miles the Air can breeze along between charges— currently the longest range of any electric car. Find a 350kW high-speed charger and add 200 more miles in just 12 minutes.

The interior is as Jetsons-esque as the exterior. Because the entire roof is one piece of curved glass, it feels like you’re sitting in a huge bubble. But beware: Despite the tinting and metallic coating meant to reflect the heat, Florida-style sunshine will have you sweating like a polar bear in a sauna.

More wow factors include a dashboard dominated by a 34-inch floating display and a tablet in the center console that disappears at a touch to reveal a storage compartment. And the materials scream Scandinavian cool, with a contemporary mix of leathers, linens, and suede-like Alcantara accented by open-pore matte wood.

64 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

When was the last time you saw front seats a different color than those in the back? In the rear, there’s Merc S-Class legroom and a perfectly flat floor to add to the feeling of space. The seats themselves can fold to enlarge the trunk, which is reached via an opening that’s weirdly wide and narrow. Need more bag space? The front trunk (aka the frunk) is as big as a bathtub.

On the road, this Grand Touring Air makes a sensational, high-luxury sporting sedan. Naturally, it’s whisper quiet at anything other than low speeds, when the background whine from the motors intrudes. Squeeze the throttle, however, and it’s all mind-warping thrust.

Despite its 5,200-pound weight, the Air can scythe around curves like it’s running on invisible rails, with massive grip from the 21-inch tires and laser-like precision from the steering. And you can choose between three levels of electrical excitement: Comfort provides a smooth ride, Swift offers more volts and firmer suspension, and Sprint unleashes the Kraken and all 819 horseys.

But what about all those stories of so-so reliability, irritating software glitches, and sketchy customer support? Well, during my week with the car, it locked me out with the key inside, requiring a call to tech support for a remote unlock. Two days later it refused to come out of Park and into Drive, requiring a 55-minute software update that thankfully solved the issue. Remember, Tesla had the same kind of

glitches with its Model S circa 2013.

It’s a concern, especially with a car costing almost $140,000. But there’s too much at stake at Lucid—and too much financial backing behind it—for the Air and upcoming Gravity SUV version not to succeed.

Roll the dice, take the gamble, and this remarkable piece of design and engineering will, hopefully, not disappoint. «

FRENCH CONNECTION

JEANNEAU’S NEW DB/43 PERFORMANCE CRUISER OFFERS PACE WITH SPACE, PLUS A WHOLE LOT OF GALLIC STYLE

As the French say oh-so eloquently: “Ooh la la!” Simple translation: “Wow!”

The phrase perfectly describes the bold, avant-garde design of prolific French builder Jeanneau’s new flagship fast cruiser, the Jeanneau DB/43. Stretching more than 44 feet from its near-vertical plumb bow to its sawn-off tail, the DB (short for day boat) is guaranteed to spin heads from Miami to Maine.

Henri Jeanneau started off building outboard-powered wooden dinghies in 1957, only adding sailboats in 1964. Today, the Jeanneau company is part of the Groupe Beneteau conglomerate, which not only includes Beneteau and Jeanneau, but Prestige, Lagoon Catamarans, Wellcraft, Four Winns, and Scarab.

While Jeanneau has been offering powerboats since the early ’80s—Cap Camarat and

the wonderfully named Merry Fisher are firm Euro favorites—it is only now dipping a toe in the luxury day boat water with its new DB range.

The DB/43 made its U.S. debut at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Its target audience is the day or weekend boaters or sunset cocktail cruisers who want to head out with friends and family, drop the hook, or cruise to a favorite waterfront eatery.

Italian designer Camillo Garroni came up with the 43’s head-spinning exterior lines, dominated by towering hull sides and a racy, swept-back windshield. The screen itself flows seamlessly into that extended hardtop, which has a huge opening section to let in the sun

and an extendable rear sunshade to protect the back of the cockpit.

But the headline feature here is the power-lowering side terraces. At the push of a button, these extend the cockpit width from 12 feet 6 inches to 18 feet 6 inches to create one very cool beach club. Another button elevates the cockpit sun lounger to reveal storage for everything from Seabobs to dive tanks to lines and fenders. In place, the sun lounger

66 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED JOURNEYS

has a movable backrest that works with the double-leaf folding table. And outdoor kitchens don’t come more versatile than the DB/43’s, which has a grill, fridge, sink, and ice maker, plus lots of prep space.

To accommodate the two-cabin layout below deck, Jeanneau jettisoned the typical walk-around side decks. Instead, there are three steps on either side leading up to a highish foredeck with an oversize sun pad. For overnight stays or afternoon naps, there’s a surprisingly spacious forward cabin with soaring headroom and a lowheadroom guest cabin under the cockpit floor. There’s also a second galley here with a sink, microwave, and fridge, along with a roomy head and shower. Ditch the galley and you can opt for a second shower room for guests. And in typical French fashion, the materials, design flourishes, quality, and fi t and finish are just exquisite.

Powering the DB/43 is a choice of twin inboard turbo-diesels with sterndrives. The

standard engines are 380-hp Volvo D6s with the option of 440-hp versions. Also on offer are triple 350-hp Mercury Verado outboards or equivalent Yamahas hanging off the transom. The outboards deliver a top speed of around 40 knots, compared to around 33 with the inboards. The other downside of inboard power is the boat’s tight engine compartment, which makes maintenance a real challenge.

The design of that deep-V, wave-cleaving hull is the handiwork of Sarasota-based naval

architect Michael Peters, who’s been sculpting Jeanneau hulls for more than three decades. Peters’ focus here was on delivering speed with a smooth ride. The hull itself was designed for a top speed of 52 mph, which means the option of the latest 600-hp Verado V12 outboards can’t be far off.

Yes, there’s no shortage of rivals in this rapidly growing sector of the market. But the style, speed, and spaciousness of this dynamic DB/43 gives it a certain je ne sais quoi. «

PARADISE FOUND

A Neapolitan’s dream vacation home in the North Carolina High Country provides welcome respite from the intense Southwest Florida summers

Before ever visiting Naples, Sue Dalton found the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Many of the scenic peaks of this range are within a two-hour drive of Charlotte, where she and her late husband, William (Bill) Dalton, once owned two radio stations. The Daltons fell in love with the region and in 1995 bought a model home in Linville Ridge, a private golf course community situated on 1,500 acres and located 4,949 feet above sea level in the heart of the High Country.

Born and raised in California, Sue moved to Washington, D.C. in the 1970s to continue a sales career in the radio broadcasting industry, thriving in what she considers a “fortunate time to be involved”—when affirmative action took center stage. She met Bill, who was on his way to becoming a radio broadcast pioneer, in Washington, D.C., the city she once considered “a sleepy little town.” In 1981, the couple, who were by then married, formed the Dalton Group, entering a 35-year period of radio

ownership. Included in their portfolio were WGRR in Cincinnati, Ohio, WXTR in D.C., and two stations in Charlotte: WWMG and WEND.

Sue enjoyed the formality of D.C. and the proximity to the political institution, though the nation’s capital presented a very different pace and tone from the West Coast. In fact, she admits experiencing “culture shock” when she first relocated. Although the Daltons worked in the private sector, she admits “we spun in lots of circles.” The hardworking couple formed many lifelong friendships and were actively involved with numerous charitable organizations during their many years in the country’s capital.

Their model mountain home was enjoyed for 12 years, but with three grown children and seven grands, the Daltons soon outgrew it. In 2007 they chanced upon an 8,600-square-foot home under construction in Linville Ridge. “It was our dream home,” says Sue. With its uniquely beautiful scenery and an average daily summer temperature of 75 degrees, it is not surprising the Daltons made another purchase in the community that includes multiple amenities and a golf course boasting the highest elevation east of the Mississippi River.

Blooming Where Planted

“I believe we give back what we are given and that we get back more than we ever give,” says Sue Dalton when asked what inspires her to become philanthropically involved in the community in which she lives.

Following a successful career, Sue found causes that touched her heart, like cancer-fighting initiatives, Naples Community Hospital (NCH), and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. With her marketing background, she is a natural for helping raise awareness for various causes. In fact, it was Sue who helped create the Conservancy’s major fundraiser, Magic Under the Mangroves, suggesting bringing people right to the location for maximum impact, in this case the Conservancy grounds. She has served two terms on the Conservancy’s board and as secretary for the board chair of the major fundraiser.

Sue also created and funded the Susan and William Dalton Discovery Center, which opened in 2012 at the Conservancy. “Version 2.0,” she calls it, opened in 2022, offering upgraded exhibits, updated and impactful messaging, and a variety of hands-on experiences. She is hopeful that more people will be encouraged to take action to protect the unique environment of

Southwest Florida; she is dedicated to furthering the mission of the Conservancy, phrasing it: “to protect our water, land, wildlife, and our future.”

Rob Moher, president and CEO for the Conservancy, considers Sue a leading voice for the organization. “Her passion, vision, and networking skills have enabled her to successfully connect people to a mission,” he says. “She remains an enthusiastic volunteer, and she’s not done yet.”

Along with her work with the Conservancy, Sue has served as a trustee for NCH for two years, chairing the marketing committee. She also funded and created the William and Susan Dalton Oncology Unit, as well as the Garden of Hope and Courage—a healing garden located on NCH grounds; she has also chaired the board of this garden. In the past, Sue has served on boards for the Collier Community Foundation’s Women of Initiative (2008) and the newly renamed Baker Senior Center Naples. Though officially retired, Sue spends time every day lending her talents to charitable organizations committed to making the world a better place—continuing to create beauty wherever she resides.

Banner Elk, North Carolina, and Stuart, Florida, was hired to help complete the interior of the new home. Sue especially credits the creativity of Pam McKay, senior interior designer at Dianne Davant & Associates, for realizing a chic mountain retreat filled with stone, wood, rich colors, and hearty fabrics.

Although the mountains present a very short growing season, Sue splurged on the landscaping for the home, which sits on approximately two acres. “We actually get to enjoy three seasons,” she explains about their four-month long stay: “late spring, summer, and early fall.”

She envisioned waterfalls amidst a beautiful garden in the hilly and rugged terrain; Wayne Brewer of Brewer Landscap-

ing & Clearing, in Old Fort, North Carolina, was enlisted to create two separate falls that cascade through the front yard and empty into a pond near the home’s entrance. A plush display of ferns, dahlias, rhododendrons, laurel, and various species of evergreen trees grows amongst groupings of large rocks and stone paths, showcasing a spectacular entrance to the home.

Not until you enter the home and walk out on the expansive back porch, however, do you observe the impressive miles-long view—seven different mountain ranges to the south and west. If you visit in the evening, you witness the sun setting over eastern Tennessee, a nearly nightly ritual for Sue and guests.

When Bill and Sue first bought in Linville Ridge, they were not acquainted with the Lutgert name. (The Lutgert Companies began developing Linville Ridge in 1978.) They soon discovered that many of their

Linville neighbors also owned homes in Naples, where the late Raymond Lutgert transformed the Naples beachfront—now known as Park Shore—in the early ’60s and was involved with numerous other developments in Naples.

The Daltons visited Southwest Florida and purchased a home, first choosing Bonita Springs for its proximity to the airport; in 1996, they purchased in the golfing community of Grey Oaks, joining multiple other Neapolitans who make the yearly trek between what Sue refers to as “paradise north and paradise south,” from the beginning of June “until the mountains are ablaze with fall foliage.”

In 2012, Sue lost Bill to lung cancer. She still maintains the vacation schedule—now visiting with her significant other, Paul O’Neil. Together they enjoy golf, sunsets, visiting with family and friends, and a pleasant change of scenery from Naples. «

From April through September, consider visiting Dunnellon’s Rainbow Springs State Park. Tube rentals include a tram ride after your two-hour float down the river. Keep your eyes peeled for turtles, fish, and underwater limestone formations.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park boasts the country’s

deepest freshwater cave system. Visitors can swim, paddle, take a boat tour, or catch the park’s iconic mermaid show.

Located just outside Orlando, Wekiwa Springs maintains a 72 degree temp all year. This second-magnitude spring isn’t Florida’s largest, but it draws a sizable crowd. If possible, visit during the week.

Warren’s Preserve in Gainesville offers 4 miles of spelunking. This cave system, believed to be Florida’s longest dry-air cave, has no safety upgrades or measures in place, making it ideal for a seasoned caver to test their skills and maybe even catch a glimpse of the endangered blind crayfish.

During the Great Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Works Progress Administration established Florida Caverns State Park near the FloridaGeorgia-Alabama border. Workers from both organizations carved paths into some of the park’s caves. While certain caves here are off-limits, the park leads guided tours through 12 underground rooms that show a different side of the Sunshine State.

While hikers use these trails too, mountain bikers flock here for the scenery and varying levels of difficulty. All the trails loop, with the inner trails offering the most challenging rides.

While you can technically put a bike on the beach almost anywhere in Florida, the Jacksonville area has a wide coastline with firm-packed sand and three thriving beach towns (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach) where you can check out mom-and-pop eateries and laid-back bars. The easiest way in is the public beach access point at 19th Avenue.

This 47-mile trail crosses the Pinellas peninsula, with spurs leading to various cities, including Gulfport, Tarpon Springs, and Dunedin. The trail includes more than 30 miles of abandoned railway and connects cyclists with various parks and parts of the county, at times bringing them close to the Gulf of Mexico.

Saddle up and hit the beach along Amelia Island, which allows beach riding and offers equestrian tours. In the panhandle, take a leisurely ride around the beaches of Cape San Blas. Unlike the coarse sand and wave action of Amelia Island, the Gulf beaches of Cape San Blas have calm water and powdery sand.

In Ocala, there’s no shortage of places to ride along the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway. Explore the Shangri-La tract, a 4.3-mile, multiuse, tree-lined trail, or the Ross Prairie Trailhead loop, which is more than 6 miles of oak and sand riding that will transport you to a hidden forest. Riders can spend the night and park their horses at nearby state campgrounds.

The surf city of Florida, Cocoa Beach is famous for its waves and amenities, including a large public beach and the Ron Jon Surf Shop (ronjonsurfshop.com). Several local outfitters offer surf lessons—including the Ron Jon Surf School—in a group setting or on a solo basis.

Sunset sails are a mainstay attraction on Florida’s Gulf Coast. For a peaceful sail accented with dolphin sightings, check out Dolphin Landings on St. Pete Beach (dolphinlandings.com). If you wish to actively sail, Blue Water Sailing School in Fort Lauderdale (bwss.com) hosts courses in sailing and navigation in accordance with standards set by the American Sailing Association.

Every summer, paddlers head to the Indian River Lagoon to view the glitter in the night water. That bioluminescence is caused by nonharmful

algae, and when something moves in the water—such as a school of fish or kayak paddle—the disturbed area glows. While bioluminescence can be seen in many areas, the lack of light pollution makes the Indian River Lagoon prime viewing.

limestone rocks. The preserve also provides sanctuary for three types of sea turtles and endangered plants, so kayaking when it’s calm can be a rewarding sight, too.

An ecological highlight awaits within the Everglades: paddling across a coastal mangrove forest. Nine Mile Pond boasts a 5-mile excursion that passes through mangrove tunnels. Paddlers are sure to spot alligators, birds, and native plant life galore.

Managed by The Nature Conservancy, this preserve offers vistas not seen anywhere else in Florida, with a shoreline pockmarked with rocks rather than sand. Seasoned paddlers can take to the waters at high tide and watch as the water is forced up through the Anastasia

Where else in the world can you watch a rocket launch while bobbing with the current? Head to the Merritt Island area along the Space Coast to catch the action. Local outfitters such as Adventures in Florida (adventuresinflorida.com) host rocket launch kayak tours, but be sure to check the launch schedule before booking.

You don’t have to be a Pirates of the Caribbean fan to appreciate one of Florida’s best underwater playgrounds. This mysterious submarine path stretches from Key Largo to Key West; the shallowest wreck lies near Sombrero Light at 14 feet, while others are as deep as 120 feet.

Snorkelers and free divers will have plenty to see off Blue Heron Bridge in Riviera Beach’s Phil Foster Park. The surrounding water is shallow (the deepest point reaches only 20 feet) and features a diverse population of sea life as well as a 2-acre snorkel trail composed of limestone boulders and reef modules.

OPENINGS

NIBBLE AND SIP AT REBECCA’S

Rebecca Maddox has come full circle. First, she opened Three60 Market in a somewhat unlikely spot on Bayshore Drive. With inventive food options served up in the restaurant, wines marked up just $3.60 a bottle in the wine shop, and its proximity to Naples Botanical Garden, it quickly became a popular spot. Then, Maddox envisioned a place where food trucks could gather, and Celebration Park took form right next door to Three60. Next came Three60 Wine in North Naples.

Where Three60’s restaurant is casual and kid-friendly, Maddox’s newly opened Rebecca’s Wine Bar is geared to grown-ups looking to enjoy themselves in a lightdrenched space done in modern Balinese decor. Soothing stone and wood textures proliferate, setting off a wall of windows and another of wines that made the trip from the retail market at Three60.

Rebecca’s semiprivate niches afford gathering spots for groups of 12 to 30 people, while the larger area can accommodate up to 150. It’s also available for celebrations, charity events, and parties. The menu features

seven types of caviar, as well as 34 meats and cheeses from which you can customize cheese and charcuterie boards. Try the roasted leek and blood orange salad. Or, opt for seafood and fish options like chilled lobster, Gulf shrimp cocktail, or the local fish crudo. Finish up in a sweet yet not-too-heavy way with either the dark and white chocolate toffee or strawberry lemon mascarpone trifle. (rebeccasnaples.com) –Karen Feldman

SEASONAL SELECTIONS

Summer Shortcuts

CASUAL MEALS MAKE FOR SIMPLE BUT DELICIOUS DINING

It’s summertime, and the living is hot and sticky. The myriad galas and social events have slowed to a trickle, and the kids are bored and constantly in search of food. It’s a great time to pick up a casual meal someone else has prepared and kick back by the pool or take a leisurely sunset cruise. Here are three spots that can provide relatively speedy meals without resorting to standard fast-food fare.

Have your dinner and decadent dessert, too, now that Mikkelsen’s Pastry Shop (mikkelsenspastryshop.com) and Wicked Eats have teamed up. Billy Vasseur, a longtime chef at top Naples country clubs, operates Wicked Eats and is creating meals to go at Paw and Elizabeth Mikkelsen’s acclaimed pastry shop. Vasseur makes a rotating lineup of soups and entrées available on a first-come, first-served basis. Six-layer lasagna, chicken saltimbocca or Marsala, crab cakes, and baked stuffed shrimp are among the possibilities. Crowd favorites include his meatloaf and New England clam chowder. All the generously portioned meal kits come with simple instructions on how to heat them for serving.

“You go home, throw them in the oven, set the timer, sit down, and have a drink until they’re done,” Vasseur says. “It’s exciting to see so many people who have followed me over the years come here and be so excited to have my food again. And it’s great to see so many who have never been to Mikkelsen’s shop discover Paw’s incredible desserts. It’s a win-win.”

Crisp & Green (crispandgreen.com) is among the latest bowl-based restaurants to open in Southwest Florida, first in Founders Square in Naples, then at Estero Town Commons Place. The Minnesota-based fast-casual chain offers made-from-scratch healthy selections that include salads, grain bowls, acai bowls, and smoothies. There are hearty salads, such as the BBQ Smokeshow, with greens, barbecue chicken thigh, roasted corn and poblano, napa cabbage, carrot, pickled onion, blue corn chips, and smoky barbecue ranch dressing. The Thai & Stop Me features greens, citrus shrimp, orange slices, daikon radish, mint,

cilantro, peanuts, lime squeeze, and peanut dressing. Children’s plates are available, too. The local restaurants are run by Opus Foods 2.0, a woman-owned Naples restaurant management company.

For a broader selection that includes some creative adult beverages, consider the open-air Lake Park Diner (thelakeparkdiner.com), where you can dine in or take out. The website allows for online ordering in advance. There’s something for everyone here, including vegans, vegetarians, carnivores, those who avoid gluten, and kids. Portions are large. Start off with buffalo cauliflower or chicken-stuffed lettuce wraps, and then move on to an entrée-size bowl of Japanese eggplant and farro. Or, try a bison burger. When you order Adam’s fish and chips, $1 goes to fight cancer. A chilled hemp hibiscus tea with muddled raspberries is an alcohol-free refresher on a steamy night. For something more indulgent, consider a shake or root beer float.

HIDDEN NOOK

It’s likely Island Walk residents are in the know, but those not living within the gated community may be unaware of a new restaurant there that’s open to the public. (Nonresidents need to make reservations on OpenTable or via the restaurant’s website.)

Casa Cotzelli is a 150-seat Italian restaurant serving lunch and dinner. The name is a combination of the owners’ names: Gabriele Cotza, originally from Milan, and Filippo Butelli, from Tuscany. Both have worked at reputable Naples restaurants, including Sails Restaurant, Bice Ristorante, Molto Trattoria, and Truluck’s.

The longtime friends and

coworkers opened their own restaurant, Butelli says, “because we’re very passionate about food. We want to bring modern Italian food to Naples.”

While there are many Italian restaurants in town, Butelli says the pair seeks to create a more authentic experience. That means the menu has no meatballs, veal parmigiana, or other dishes Americans think of as Italian but Italians consider Americanized versions of their cuisine. That includes heaping plates of pasta. “Our portions are not too small, not too big, but tasty,” Butelli says.

Lunch selections include prosciutto and melon, fried calamari,

seafood salad, panini, pizzas, salads, pasta, sea bass, steak, and more. For dinner, choose from grilled octopus, beet and arugula salad, tuna tartare, tortelloni della nonna, spaghetti carbonara, cod livornese, and other classic dishes. The pasta and desserts are homemade, and there’s a full bar, which remains open after the kitchen closes. (casacotzelli. com) –K.F.

GLOBAL GOURMET

HIBACHI AT HOME

Taking the family out for hibachi can be fun but noisy, as multiple parties enjoy the spatula-clanging, shrimp-tossing show at their individual tables. Chef Michael Shapiro, aka Rad Dad, offers an alternative: He brings the hibachi party to you.

Shapiro transports his Rad Dad Hibachi dinner and show to your place, complete with traditional food, veggies, fried rice, noodles, and a shrimp appetizer. He also comes equipped with tables, chairs, a chef’s cart, and grill. In other words, you bring a party of 10 or more (plus plates and utensils)—he brings the rest.

Although he may not look the part, Shapiro has true hibachi cred, having completed a twoweek bootcamp at Benihana in Boca Raton, then working for the chain synonymous with hibachi for close to a year.

The training was intense. “It was 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day for two weeks,” he says. “We did nothing but flip spatulas and cook full time. They didn’t just teach you to cook, you had to be an entertainer. You have to give the audience a show.”

And that’s what makes hibachi cooking so much fun for his clientele and for him.

“It’s a more personal experience,” he says. “At a home, people are more focused on the other guests and the chef. I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.”

Shapiro will do his thing anywhere between Marco Island and Punta Gorda, with prices starting at $50 per adult and $25 for children younger than 13. (raddadhibachi.com) —K.F.

COOL OFF WITH THIS REFRESHING BLEND OF TEQUILA AND PINEAPPLE JUICE

July always starts with a bang as we gather to celebrate our nation’s independence with parades, picnics, and fireworks. The dog days of summer are back, and the festivities are as hot as the weather. July boasts some more unique honorifics as well: National Grilling Month, National Ice Cream Month, National Bikini Day (July 5), and National Tequila Day (July 24) among them. If the latter entices, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the popular Mexican spirit and toast its rich history.

Tequila dates to the sixteenth century. Legend goes that a lightning bolt struck a fi eld of agave plants, setting them on fi re. The fl ames heated the agaves, giving them a sweet taste and a warming aroma that lent well to fermentation.

The margarita and the paloma might be the most popular tequila drinks in the United States and Mexico, respectively, but there are countless ways to savor the spirit’s various expressions. The Gabriel in downtown Miami serves both a classic margarita and the Yachtsman, which marries aged tequila with fresh pressed pineapple juice.

The Yachtsman Ingredients

1 1/2 oz. Eleven20 Añejo Tequila

1/2 oz. agave simple syrup

1/2 oz. lime juice

2 oz. fresh pressed pineapple juice

Mint sprig and/or dehydrated pineapple slice for garnish

Add all the ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a glass with fresh ice. Garnish with a mint sprig and/or dehydrated pineapple slice.

BALANCE

YOUR BEST SELF: FITNESS, NUTRITION, MINDFULNESS, WELL-BEING

Probiotics, often referred to as “good bacteria,” may be found in foods like yogurt with live and active cultures or in probiotic supplements.

WELLNESS

THE POWER OF PROBIOTICS

Think all bacteria are bad? Think again. Probiotics, often called “good bacteria,” “form an essential part of our immune system and protect us from bad bacteria,” says Dr. Joel Ying, owner of Joy Health & Wellness in Naples. These beneficial bacteria live in your gut and other areas of your body and are important for your health. You can boost their number by eating good sources of probiotics, like yogurt with live and active cultures, kimchi, and sauerkraut, as well as by taking a probiotic supplement (Ying recommends ones made by Culturelle).

He advises taking them if you’ve recently used antibiotics, which destroy both bad and good bacteria, or if you have digestion issues. As always, and particularly if you have immune system issues, it’s important to talk with your doctor before taking probiotics or other supplements.

“Probiotics have a lot of research behind them and are now part of mainstream medicine,” Ying notes. (joyhealthwellness.com) –Erika Klein

Take Time to PICNIC

Celebrate National Picnic Month in July with a healthy lunch outdoors. Carolyn Bivans, a registered dietitian nutritionist in North Naples, recommends choosing simple, nutritious ingredients and arranging them in creative ways for a healthy and fun outdoor spread. To perfect your next picnic, refer to her tips—as well as her tasty Waldorf salad recipe. (carolynbivansrdn.com)

WALDORF SALAD

INGREDIENTS

2 medium-size slightly tart apples (such as Rome or pink lady), cored, sliced into small chunks, and tossed with a small amount of lemon juice (to prevent brown discoloration)

2 ribs of celery, sliced

1 cup seedless red grapes, halved

1 cup chopped walnuts

6 tbsp. mayonnaise

Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS

1. Keep it simple. Bivans suggests thinking outside of the box and looking for new ideas. “It’s a great time to take simple ingredients, especially a lot of produce-based ingredients, and just combine them in very simple ways,” she says. She recommends an easy but delicious fruit and cheese platter, finger sandwiches or lettuce wraps, or a preportioned salad. Prep everything beforehand, and pack in easy-to-serve ways.

2. Practice basic food safety. Eating outdoors doesn’t give you a pass on food safety. “You always have to make sure that your hot foods stay hot, and your cold foods stay cold,” Bivans notes. Additionally, she cautions against eating leftovers after they’ve been sitting in the sun for hours—it’s not worth the bugs or the stomach bugs.

3. Don’t forget the drinks. Staying hydrated is important in the hot Florida sun, but Bivans suggests making it a little fancier with flavored sparkling water. Or, if it’s a special occasion, “bring along your favorite wine or Champagne,” she adds. “I mean, why not?”

4. Make it memorable.

“A picnic really is a special occasion for eating,” says Bivans. “Take the time to make it an event to remember with unique food and drinks. It’s not just about healthy food; it’s something that your eyes can enjoy, something that’s tasty on the palate, something that’s good for your body, and something that’s creative that just brings joy.”

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and chill for at least an hour before serving. The salad can be served on a bed of lettuce, if desired.

MOUTH TAPING

PLACING TAPE OVER YOUR MOUTH SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING STRAIGHT OUT OF A HORROR MOVIE OR A KIDNAPPING. BUT WHAT IF IT COULD HELP YOU SLEEP? THAT’S THE IDEA BEHIND MOUTH TAPING, WHICH INVOLVES TAPING YOUR MOUTH CLOSED WHILE SLEEPING TO LEAD YOU TO BREATHE THROUGH YOUR NOSE. DR. SADIQ AL-NAKEEB, FOUNDER OF LUNG SLEEP INSTITUTE IN NAPLES, SAYS THAT WHILE THERE ARE MANY BENEFITS OF NOSE BREATHING, FROM FILTERING ALLERGENS TO HUMIDIFYING THE AIR GOING TO YOUR LUNGS, THERE’S CURRENTLY NOT MUCH RESEARCH TO SUPPORT MOUTH TAPING. HE NOTES THE TECHNIQUE ALSO WON’T BE A GOOD FIT FOR YOU IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANXIETY, STRUGGLE BREATHING THROUGH YOUR NOSE OR HAVE MORE GENERAL BREATHING ISSUES, OR HAVE A TAPE ALLERGY. IF YOU DON’T EXPERIENCE THESE ISSUES, THOUGH, AL-NAKEEB SAYS YOU CAN GIVE IT A SHOT TO HELP IMPROVE DRY MOUTH, FRESHEN BREATH, OR REDUCE SNORING. FIRST, TAKE SOME STEPS TO PREPARE.

“TRY IT WHEN YOU’RE AWAKE AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU BREATHE COMFORTABLY WHILE YOU’RE AWAKE BEFORE YOU PUT IT ON AT NIGHT,” HE ADVISES. HE ALSO RECOMMENDS USING MEDICAL GRADE TAPE BECAUSE IT’S HYPOALLERGENIC AND MORE POROUS THAN NORMAL TAPE, ALLOWING SOME AIR THROUGH. (LUNGSLEEPINSTITUTE. COM) —E.K.

Acne Treatment TRANSFORMED

What if acne was no longer a source of embarrassment? That’s the idea behind the colorful hydrocolloidal stickers from Plumpie , a Naples-based skin care company.

Friends Ren DelaPaz and Juliet Carroll founded Plumpie in 2021; their stickers, which can be purchased on their website, are intended to absorb fluid and help acne heal while offering bright designs that can be worn at home or out.

It’s “more of a body-positive, acne-positive [approach],” explains DelaPaz. “Even if you have acne, you might want to cover it up, but you don’t have to be embarrassed by it, and it’s something that you can embrace about yourself.”

While the stickers were originally meant for teenagers, DelaPaz says they have been popular with women in their late 20s and 30s. “People still struggle with acne even when they get older, and it’s kind of a cute, fun accessory,” she notes.

DelaPaz, who uses the stickers herself, says they’re effective and make you feel good about yourself.

“It helps me keep my skin healthier, and just in general, it just makes you smile.” (plumpieskin.com) —E.K

All Ears for Better Health

You may have seen ads promoting the placement of magnets in ears to improve health. Actually, this practice is a type of auriculotherapy, which stimulates acupressure points on your ears to affect areas throughout your body. The magnets are a form of ear seeds, tools used in auriculotherapy that are more typically made from small steel pins or seeds from certain plants.

According to Dr. Hu Pan, president of Gulfcoast Chinese Medicine in Naples, ear seeds can help with conditions such as headaches, insomnia, and hypertension, as well as weight management. Research published in 2020 also indicates that auriculotherapy may help reduce chronic musculoskeletal pain, something Pan has witnessed in his own patients.

Even though the therapy may help improve a variety of health issues, Pan stresses

that ear seeds should complement other treatments rather than replace them—and that they take time to work. “Patience is very important,” he notes.

Finally, while you can order ear seeds online, he suggests seeing a specialist for correct placement rather than trying to use them yourself. “Always check with your doctor before you make some important decisions about your health,” he says. (panacupunc ture.com) –E.K.

LIVING WITH IVEY

BREAK IT DOWN

SAY GOODBYE TO HEARTBURN AND BLOATING BY ADOPTING EFFECTIVE PRACTICES TO IMPROVE DIGESTION

Indigestion is nothing new. We’ve all experienced this vexing stagnation in our digestive tract at some point in our lives, whether through heartburn, bloating, or constipation. Certain foods and bad habits such as smoking might increase these symptoms and make them chronic. The solution? Adjusting your diet and breaking unhealthy vices. With the right mindset, you can take positive steps toward reviving a sluggish digestive system. But to understand what your body needs, it’s best to familiarize yourself with how your digestive system breaks down what you eat.

This process begins with the body’s production of digestive enzymes, proteins that help break down food and allow for nutrient absorption. Digestive enzymes are naturally found in some foods, as well as within saliva and the pancreas, gallbladder, and liver. There are three primary digestive enzymes: amylase, which breaks down carbohydrates and starches; protease, which breaks down proteins;

and lipase, which breaks down fats.

As we age, our ability to produce these enzymes decreases. Processed foods like dairy, sugar, grains, and refined oils also impede natural enzyme production. Luckily, with a few dietary and lifestyle changes, you can give your digestive system the tools it needs to function properly. Read on for more tips and recipes.

PRACTICES TO IMPROVE DIGESTION X

Consume foods with natural digestive enzymes: Incorporate mangoes, bananas, papaya, pineapple, bee pollen, ginger, avocados, fennel, and raw, unfiltered honey into your diet.

Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, pickles, miso, and kimchi also add enzymatic value to meals.

Opt for natural remedies: Mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into a glass of water first thing in the morning to jump-start your digestion. Ginger can also proactively

decrease indigestion, so incorporate it into your food or steep it as tea. Roasted dandelion tea and fresh peppermint tea can reduce bloating, and fennel has long been used to treat indigestion; try adding it to your salads or chewing on fennel seeds to relieve an upset stomach.

such as fruits and vegetables.

enzymatic value to meals. enzymes. brain feelings of fullness.

» Follow a low-sugar diet: A low-sugar diet can minimize the risk of developing inflammatory digestive problems and alleviate constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and acid reflux. Substitute high-sugar, processed foods with whole foods

» Chew and eat slowly: Digestion begins before the first bite, and salivation and chewing stimulate production of digestive enzymes. When you eat slowly, your body can better digest your food, and it has more time to signal to your brain feelings of fullness.

FOODS THAT IMPEDE DIGESTION

» Fried foods: Avoid foods rich in unhealthy saturated fats like refined seed oils.

» Carbonated water (in excess): Club soda, seltzer, and sparkling water are made by infusing water with carbon dioxide under pressure. That gas can get trapped in your digestive system, which can lead to bloating.

» Artificial sweeteners: Not only do artificial sugars cause bloating, gas, and diarrhea, but they can also degrade the gut lining.

» Dairy: Most people do not produce enough of the lactase enzyme required to digest dairy, resulting in gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

GOOD NATURE

COMING IN HOT

COOL OFF FROM THE INSIDE OUT WITH THESE WELLNESS TIPS

Living in a tropical climate can teach you a lot about how to work with the heat. So often we brace against it, but there are certain holistic practices that can alleviate it and leave us feeling refreshed. Some methods are tried and true, like dipping into a body of water as often as possible, but the way our body absorbs heat and cools itself is also profound. When channeled into therapeutic care, as I do at my spa, this dynamic energy can create a beneficial physiological response. For instance, using a warm cloth opens the pores, while applying a cold compress to the forehead can help to relieve a headache.

Some cooling methods are more subtle, however, and these have become the lifeways I’ve learned to rely on in Florida. The ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda touts the benefits of eating cooling foods during the summer—including classics like coconut, watermelon, and cucumber as well as lemon—and limiting dairy and spice. Aloe vera, which I

grow in my gardens, is another near instant cure for heat. I love to include aloe juice in smoothies and juice blends because it is composed of 99 percent water, thereby supporting hydration. An aloe spritzer with lime and mint just might become your go-to sip this season. Aloe is also an excellent source of vitamin C and helps to soothe the skin when applied topically.

Another plant remedy in rotation come summertime is chamomile. Renowned in traditional herbalism for its soothing effects, chamomile seems to pull heat right out of the skin. Studies suggest that it has mild sedative and anti-inflammatory properties that help to alleviate all kinds of heat, from physical to emotional. I like to keep cotton pads soaked in chamomile water in a glass container in the fridge for our family to use after an active day out in the sun.

However, my favorite way to celebrate summer’s heat is to bask in the balmy nights. I find sweet relief in ending the day at the beach to marvel at the stars glimmering overhead, feel the cooling breeze rise from the water, and take part in the rhythm of the season. «

A private, three-hour cruise ($499) for a maximum of six people (ages 3 and up) takes you through the mangrove estuary; once docked, search for prized seashells while a biologist guide takes you on a stroll through the secluded beach pointing out such creatures as sea squirts, snails, sponges, and native plants.

During the months of July and August, Life’s a Beach Barrier Island Shelling Tours are available from 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday through Sunday, July 1 to August 31. (rookerybay.org; risingtidefl.com) –Gaylene Salomons

SLOW SEASON

With another “season” in the rearview mirror, full-time Neapolitans are enjoying the lighter traffic, smaller crowds, and slower pace afforded by summer. And Susie, a 20-yearold Linnaeus’s two-toed sloth at the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, epitomizes this lackadaisical lifestyle. True to her species, she spends nearly all her time hanging upside down, sleeping in this position an average of 20 hours a day. She’ll wake to leisurely devour her favorite treats of hard-boiled eggs and sweet potatoes but not for long. “She sometimes will fall asleep with food in her mouth,” says keeper Kirsti Mahon.
