HERE COMES THE BRIDE

It’s summer in Naples. Temperatures are warmer, rain is heavier, and days are longer. The pace? Slower. That said, there’s still plenty to celebrate in the month of June—from Father’s Day to Flag Day to Pride Month to the summer solstice. And of course, June also means weddings in abundance.

While weddings are exciting and enjoyable celebrations (or should be, anyway), they can require enormous amounts of preparation and planning. This issue of Naples Illustrated centers around remarkable nuptials and the people who help ensure they go off without a hitch.

On the cover this issue is Gabriella Katia Crown—a former model and founder of Katia Productions—who recently wed Matt Crown, the son of well-known Neapolitans, Bob and Barbara Crown. Gabriella and Matt, who are part-time Naples residents themselves, were married this past February at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. Matt’s last name served as the inspiration for this imperial affair, chiefly planned and designed by Lisi Korn Signature Events, taking place across three days. Without question, it was an opulent occasion; however, the shower and the engagement were likewise elaborate events. To learn more about Matt and Gabriella as well as their big day—or rather, big days—please turn to page 66.

We’re honored to feature another endearing newlywed couple: Krysta Sylvester and David Nee. This affable pair revealed an incredible ability to adapt when their original Naples venue was affected by Hurricane Ian, forcing them to shift gears and secure another location in record time. All’s well that ends well, however. The result was pure happiness, as the two—with the help of their wedding planner, Melissa Daggett—secured a beautiful beachside resort location on Marco Island that was perfect for their sea glass theme, which capitalized on pastel hues of blue and green. Read more about this joyful couple and their jocund celebration starting on page 82.

Every wedding—or at least every wedding issue of this magazine—should feature more than a little sparkle. Thanks to Executive Editor Mary Murray, we’ve got plenty to share in this edition. Flip to page 76 for “Wedding Bells,” a feature that showcases exquisite jewelry suitable for nearly all things connubial.

If you’re to wed soon—or are close to someone who is—we hope you find inspiration from the couples and celebrations featured herein. However, it’s my hope that everyone who flips through this issue will glean something beneficial, even if it’s musings that warm the heart or conjure a smile.

Best wishes,

jenos@naplesillustrated.com

THE INSIDE TRACK TO NEAPOLITAN LIVING

NAUTICAL MASTERPIECE

To further diversify the Naples Yacht Club’s collection of fine art, Northern Light and Gleam by Tim Thompson was recently added, showcased in the hallway leading to the revitalized yardarm. The prestigious piece of work, purchased from Sheldon Fine Art Gallery in Naples, depicts two notorious sailboats, built in 1937 and 1938, which were sailed as trial horses in cup races in the 1950s and 1960s.

Thompson paints using oil on linen canvas, taking great pains to make sure his technique is as historical as possible. He works in the style of the Dutch maritime painters of the seventeenth century; layer upon layer of thin oil paint is built up over time in a process called glazing, helping create the depth of color and clarity of form for which he is best known. Before beginning a painting, Thompson often spends

months pouring over historical accounts of the subjects he wants to depict, tracking down details such as weather and tidal patterns. It’s these little details and intense attention to accuracy that have helped Thompson make a name for himself. Thompson’s works are widely collected and lauded as modern classics. “It’s a big deal for us,” says Brenda O’Connor, executive director, membership, Naples Yacht Club. “Apparently the prestigious New York Yacht Club has a Tim Thompson, too.” –Gaylene Salomons

Capturing History in a SCULPTURE GARDEN

In 2018, Method & Concept Director Chad Jensen had a vision to transform a small right-of-way in the Naples Design District into an oasis for arts, culture, nature, and local history. What resulted is the ACL|ROW Sculpture Garden, named for the Atlantic Coast Line railway that once ran parallel to Tenth Street South, as well as the right-of-way on which it sits. Inspiration for the garden came when Jensen discovered a small cement rail marker engraved with the letters A,C, and L—left untouched and unnoticed by the community for decades.

He worked closely with the City of Naples to formalize his vision that included a permeable path and artwork, as well as informational signage on the rail history of Naples, including the Seaboard Air Line and the Atlantic Coast Line railways. Jensen also partnered with the Naples Botanical Garden to curate a lush subtropical landscape for the garden.

Boasting original artwork by two Florida natives, Ran Adler and Brett Harvey, the garden is now open to the public to enjoy. Says Jensen, “The hope is that people are drawn into the unassuming beauty of the space to realize it is so much more; similar to the content and context of a work of art giving dynamic meaning to something.” —G.S.; Corin

Helping at HOME

A sense of community is what makes a place, and it’s this togetherness that made Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) a home to Iowa native Ben Hermiston when he arrived at the school in 2019. “I love where I’m from,” says Hermiston, who is a senior cross-country runner at FGCU, “but I found this place, and it felt like home.”

When that home was devastated last year by Hurricane Ian, Hermiston and thousands of his fellow students were distressed by the damage. Wanting to help, he rallied five friends and went out to start cleaning up impacted houses in Fort Myers neighborhoods.

Word of his endeavor spread quickly. “First there were five, then ten, and then eventually we would average between 50 and 150 people on the busiest days,” says Hermiston, who estimates that the volunteers were able to clean up 400 or 500 houses during the 10 days after Ian struck. Together, they worked to calm homeowners, remove ruined furniture from residences, and pull toppled trees off houses. “Having everyone come together with all of their unique skills made us like jacks-of-all-trades.”

It was this coming together that impressed Hermiston the most, who takes no credit for his efforts. “It was FGCU doing this, which was the most heartwarming part,” he explains, praising the eagerness of students, administrators, and locals alike. “People would offer to pay us, but we wouldn’t take it. This is our home, and that’s why we did it. We love it here.” –C.M.

TEE TIME

PLAYING TO GIVE

A group of golfing ladies—48 to be exact—gathered to play in the annual Charity Golf Tournament hosted by the Moorings Women’s Golf Association

The site was the Moorings Golf & Country Club, a member-owned private golf club in the heart of Naples.

The association directed the proceeds of the daylong event to the St. Matthew’s House Hurricane Ian Recovery Fund. A check for $37,200, enhanced by a matching $10,000 donation from an anonymous donor, was presented to the nonprofit organization.

Steve Brooder, CEO of St. Matthew’s House, addressed the golfers and in addition to reminding participants of the mission and vision of the organization, shared how funds would be dispersed, specifically to rebuild devastated communities such as River Park in Naples.

Fueled by a volunteer workforce, St. Matthew’s House is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping fight hunger, homelessness, substance abuse, and poverty in Southwest Florida. With this generous gift from the community, it is able to continue touching hearts and transforming lives. —G.S.

What inspired you to start a swimwear brand?

From covering the swim market as a fashion editor and stylist, I saw a void in the marketplace for highquality, minimal, clean-silhouette swimwear that could also transition from a swimsuit to RTW and double as great layering pieces. I wanted to provide a go-to line of swimwear with styles that shape and accentuate the body, give minimal tan lines, and seamlessly pair with your closet essentials.

Where did you come up with the name Jade Swim?

The name Jade was inspired by the gemstone, [which is] simple in appearance with complex properties. The name reflects how the cut of a stone brings out the beauty, which is what Jade focuses on most—unique and flattering cuts.

How would you describe the summer collection?

Effortlessly chic. All the styles and colors were created with the idea of effortless dressing in mind. [They’re] minimal and versatile vacation wardrobe essentials. We introduced skirts in matching swim fabric for three-piece outfit styling and also shot many of our coverup styles at night to show the versatility beyond the beach. Everything this season is meant to be layered over other Jade pieces or even mixed in with the rest of your wardrobe staples. My favorite style this season is the Yana dress. [It’s a] one-shoulder, diagonal cutout dress [that is] so easy to style from day to night.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find most inspiration from what I personally want or find missing in the market. Also from vintage ’70s references; so many silhouettes of the ’70s are timeless, with the overall style being minimal with unique design details, which is Jade’s DNA. Finally, from my travels. I love seeing what trends are happening around the world. I get inspired by the women I see and how they style their looks.

REAL TALK WITH... Brittany Kozerski Freeney

The designer behind Jade Swim dishes on inspiration and sustainable practices

How

is Jade Swim sustainable?

Nowadays sustainable swimwear options are more prevalent than ever before, and brands have various levels of sustainability. At Jade Swim, we tackle sustainability from a few angles. We are vertically integrated, owning our own factory, which allows us to put various sustainability aspects into place while also reducing carbon emissions. For example, we cut everything in house, use as many local vendors as possible, use solid colors rather than prints and patterns to reduce water waste, [use] recycled packaging, etc. Additionally, we only produce

to order for pre-order wholesale retail partners and our e-comm to reduce production waste, knowing each unit produced is being made for a specific reason. Beyond our various sustainable operation elements, we also have strong relationships with charity partners. We work with 1 Percent for the Planet, are Certified Climate Neutral, and plant a tree for every e-comm order through Eden Reforestation.

What does it mean to you to have a sustainable brand?

Having a sustainable brand is really important. There are a lot of ways we spend money and resources toward our sustainable efforts. For example, being 1 Percent for the Planet, we donate 1 percent of our annual revenue toward environmentally focused charities. While that and many of our sustainability efforts cut into profit, I see the bigger purpose of our mission. In the past few years, the effects of climate change have been undeniable, so protecting the earth means so much more, especially having two children and wanting their environment to be as healthy as possible.

DESIGN AND DECOR FOR LUXURIOUS LIVING IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA

AT

THE AULESTIA FAMILY

Three years ago, Adam and Lara Aulestia were happily creating a life with their two young children—Allie and Austin—in Annapolis, Maryland. Born and raised in the mid-Atlantic region of the country, both had carved out engaging and fulfilling careers in the area; they owned a beautiful Nantucket-style home on the South River, where they enjoyed boating on the nearby Chesapeake Bay. Mommy and Daddy vacations were enjoyed in places like Laguna Beach, California, and Naples, Florida—two spots the couple were particularly fond of. While Adam could work from home, it was Lara who often had to deal with an exhausting commute to Washington, D.C.

A worldwide pandemic prompted a change to this family’s master plan. “COVID partially forced our move,” explains Adam, about the family’s subsequent relocation to Naples. They knew they already loved the warm weather and the water, but were they ready for a full-time move south?

It was a frenzied and competitive time in the Southwest Florida real estate market, necessitating quick decisions for buyers. Adam had established a rapport with a real estate agent in Southwest Florida on behalf of a client, so he reached out to the same agent for assistance looking for a home for his own family. The agent convinced him to consider the centrally located Moorings

neighborhood; Adam and Lara soon found themselves in Naples to tour the few available properties for sale. While taking a break from the day’s home tours, Lara noticed a new listing pop up on Zillow with a 34103 zip code. “It checked all the important boxes,” says Lara. Their agent promptly arranged a tour.

Built in 2005, the home offered four bedrooms and five baths, comprising just over 4,300 square feet. The couple decided it had a functional layout; they knew they could not spend time ruminating over minor de-

tails before making an offer. In May 2021, they officially purchased the property, complete with furniture. Well-built and maintained, the home offered high ceilings, lots of arches and windows, and a multitude of Mediterranean colors. To update the home, “we blasted it with white,” explains Lara. The paint refresh provided the opportunity to add an eclectic mix of contemporary furniture and artwork.

Although there are many positive reasons for moving to a warmer climate, enjoying the outdoors year-round is commonly cited. That’s certainly the case for the Aulestia family. They gather most often on their 1,900-square-foot lanai. “It acts as an extended living room, dining room, play space, and party area,” says Lara.

In addition to a large pool and spa and bar and grill area, the lanai offers numerous seating options, from dinners around the large wooden dining table to sunbathing on chaise lounges to snuggling into pillows on oversize white wicker chairs. There is even plenty of space to store pool toys and games. Best of all, the southern-exposed lanai is surrounded with lush landscaping ensuring added privacy.

Allie, now 8, says she missed her friends most when the family moved. No worries now, however, for she has accumulated a gaggle of girlfriends, or as Adam calls it, “a girl gang.” She plays lacrosse and soccer and is energetically honing her acting skills with theater classes and productions.

Lara and Adam Aulestia reside in a home in the Moorings with their two children, Allie and Austin. The family most enjoys time spent together on the versatile 1,900-square-foot lanai.

Austin, 5, is an active participant in multiple sports: golf, basketball, and soccer. The activity must be paying off; he proudly informs he is “the third-fastest kid in kindergarten.”

Despite the long-distance move, the couple’s careers are flourishing. Adam continues as president and founder of Aulestia Ventures and Aulestia Wealth Management, overseeing public and private investments and family offices. Lara left the corporate world to launch her paid media strategy

and media buying company, 1060 Advisors, which consults for political campaigns, donors, and corporations.

Relocating a family is never easy. However, the Aulestia family has comfortably settled into what they call “the perfect neighborhood,” where they have embraced the golf-cart lifestyle—traversing beautiful treelined streets to enjoy sunsets at the Moorings private beach, visiting friends for playdates, and getting to Sea Gate Elementary School in time for the morning bell. «

SEASIDE MAKEOVER

HOW REMOVING A WALL CREATED A DRAMATIC, CAPTIVATING VIEW

Marc and Carlene Petersen decided they would purchase a seasonal home in the desert town of Tucson, Arizona, as it was a direct flight from their longtime Omaha, Nebraska, residence. However, when things didn’t go according to plan, the newly retired couple visited Naples. “We fell in love the minute we got here,” says

Marc. “It was the weather and the golf, and the people are very friendly and nice.”

In 2005, the Petersens moved into an extensively remodeled unit in Gulf View Beach Club, a 32-unit boutique condominium built in the early 1980s and situated directly on the beach.

Still in the same condo and still enamored with Naples, the couple recently decided they were ready to modernize their twobedroom, second-floor residence. Research led Carlene to Jinx McDonald Interior Designs; after an initial meeting, the Petersens promptly commissioned the Naples-based firm. Chrissy Howard, lead interior designer, and Barbara Schwenk, interior designer, lent their talents to the successful remodel of the seaside dwelling.

“The main priority of this remodel was to open up their twobedroom condo to the spectacular Gulf of Mexico view and create better functionality throughout the home while lightening up the space,” explains Howard. Another priority was using some of the clients’ existing artwork, favorite furnishings, and rugs.

Before work commenced, the homeowners showed the design team various units in the building to see what others had already done. “We took an idea from here and there and got the best of all worlds,” imparts Schwenk.

The design team worked alongside August General Contracting, who did the heavy lifting, like tackling plumbing and air-conditioning issues that often surface in condominium renovations. The team had to abide by strict homeowner association rules, such as completing all renovations between the first of May and the end of

October. “Proper planning and working with reliable subcontractors always helps,” adds Howard.

Removing a wall between the living room and primary bedroom suite produced immediate and dramatic results. Along with opening and brightening the great room in the 2,634-square-foot space, the wall’s removal also allowed the owners to enjoy spectacular views from their bedroom. When desired, a large sliding door encloses the space.

“We now have a perfect western sunset view,” says Marc, sharing that they never tire of watching the spectacular solar show they are privy to most evenings.

To create the classic and timeless design aesthetic the clients requested, the designers selected a floral Scalamandré fabric displaying colors of blue, coral, and rust. Visible on the two dining chairs and on one of the living room armchairs, the textile became the inspiration for other decor. Once the desired color scheme was in place—with walls of pure white—coastal tones were added to the mix.

Because Carlene enjoys cooking and baking for family and friends, the kitchen also was given a significant makeover. No longer dark, the cheerful, chef-worthy space boasts a durable, man-made quartz countertop. A blue herringbone tile backsplash above the cooktop breaks up the white walls while a louvered cabinet on the island adds a coastal feel to the room. dor range. Three white LED pendants of rippled glass in an organic shape hang overhead. “Carlene requested a special cabinet to house her mixer—it can be pulled up to counter height with the island,” relays Schwenk.

With the clients’ directive, the sink was moved. Rather than stare at a solid wall while at work in the kitchen, a pass-through window now

allows one to see through to the great room and the subsequent view. “We also added a new kitchen entrance,” states Howard.

Another unique space is the guest room/ sewing room, where Carlene designs and sews quilts. When guests arrive, the sewing table folds up to become a cabinet and a comfortable Murphy bed unfolds from the wall.

At the reveal everyone was thrilled with the outcome. “We are very pleased and can’t think of anything we would change,” says Carlene. “This was a collaborative effort. We all worked together as a cohesive unit, so everything turned out better than expected,” says Howard. «

ADDING DEPTH AND DIMENSION TO YOUR SPACE

A remodel of a Mediterranean-style home on the water in Aqualane Shores allowed Liz Brown, senior designer with Calusa Bay Interior Design, a Naples-based residential design firm, to head out on a favorite childhood activity: a scavenger hunt.

Brown, a native Neapolitan, attended Florida State University in Tallahassee; she returned to Naples where she has worked as an interior designer for the past nine years—the last five with Calusa Bay Interior Design. Brown was honored to meet clients who trusted her and allowed her to “let my vision come through,” she says.

The homeowners requested a coastal vibe for their large residence—but not one that would be over the top—with blue as the main color to contrast a neutral background. Brown went in search of fabrics, rugs, wallpaper, cushions, and accent pieces in a variety of classic blue hues and a variety of motifs to add interest and character to each room.

By following a similar color scheme, each

room, including the lanai, flows easily from one to the other. The intermixture of prints and patterns in a range of compositions nestles comfortably against a warm, sandy brown wood floor and brilliant white walls and cabinets, creating spaces that are inviting and comfortable. “It’s a fun personality play,” adds Brown.

The rejuvenation was completed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the period that followed, numerous visitors flocked to this secondary home, including the couple’s three grown daughters. Everyone was able to enjoy this “fun and cheerful home during a gloomy time of respite,” says Brown. (calusabaydesign.com)

YOUR PASSPORT TO THE MOST FASCINATING CORNERS OF THE GLOBE

ONCE UPON A TIME IN PARIS

BEGIN YOUR PARISIAN FAIRY TALE IN THE REQUISITE SETTING: AN OFFICIAL FIVE-STAR-PLUS PALACE

Four Seasons Hotel George V

Twelve exalted properties in the City of Light carry official Palace status, a distinction above five stars and indicative of a starring role in French heritage, culture, and gastronomy. Among this elite group, a prime example of Parisian perfection is Four Seasons Hotel George V, a 1928 Art Deco landmark off the Champs-Élysées defined by exemplary design and impeccable service.

First impressions of the gilded lobby merely preview the magnifi-

cence that lies within. Dramatic floral arrangements (an ever-changing vision of 14,000 blossoms by the hotel’s artistic director, Jeff Leatham) accent a double-story marble entryway that overlooks a manicured courtyard known for its seasonal pop-ups and installations. The most affable of staff greet and assist in freshly pressed uniforms, confirming—and later delivering—an expectation of excellence.

At the far end of the lobby and surrounding the courtyard, three world-renowned gastronomic sanctuaries come into view: Le Cinq,

which represents the apex of French cuisine; Italian-Mediterranean hot spot Le George; and plant- and seafood-forward L’Orangerie. Combined, they carry five Michelin stars, the most under one roof in Europe.

Underground at Le Spa, a haute wellness experience awaits in a Pierre-Yves Rochon–designed haven, featuring a lap pool, cocoon lounge beds, a heated vitality pool, a mosaictiled hammam, and coral-tinged treatment rooms. Upstairs, guest rooms and suites embrace a delightfully restrained take on classical Louis XVI style, characterized by uncluttered configurations of period furnishings and a soothing palette of sky blue and cream.

Within rooms, indulge in the finer sensorial details, touching the high-thread-count linens, smelling the abundance of flowers, and melting in the comfiest terry robes imaginable. Then, zoom out on views of the pristine courtyard, daily life along Avenue George V, or even the twinkle of the Eiffel Tower (if staying in the

penthouse or select specialty suites). Next, step out on your oversize balcony or terrace—most rooms have one—and pop the first of many bottles of Champagne. The scene is set and it’s time to toast the start of an epic Parisian adventure. (fourseasons.com/paris)

Le Royal Monceau - Raffles Paris

Despite the pressure for an official Palace hotel to skew traditional, Le Royal MonceauRaffles Paris stands out as an artsy and edgy maverick, branding it a favorite among the creative elite and rebel-spirited.

The vibrant property is steeped in arts and culture, with a private collection of more than 300 works spread throughout, a contemporary art gallery and bookstore, and a secret 99-seat theater. A dedicated art concierge oversees onsite programming while also coordinating guided tours at local museums and galleries, visits to artists’ studios, private viewings, and more.

The imaginative interiors blend the whimsical with the surreal, culminating in designer Philippe Starck’s most intricate and impressive work to date. Exposed brick and faux–stained glass windows envelop the principal staircase, nodding to the building’s genesis as a home for nuns. Purgatory calls from the ground-floor smoking room, an all-red inferno padded with leather-cushioned walls and punctuated by jagged furnishings. Hallways boast floor-toceiling mirrors intended to channel inescapable self-reflection, a theme that resurfaces in each guest room through a colossal, 360degree mirrored bathroom and dressing room.

Unique room decor heightens Starck’s eccentricity. In the junior suites, for example, find a shapely Murano glass lamp that honors Picasso, a random acoustic guitar that’s meant to be played, and an intentionally crooked writing

desk imprinted with a Paris map that denotes Starck’s preferred hangouts. Framed above the nightstands and embroidered on the duvet are love letters and poems by poet Jean Cocteau.

At the MyBlend by Clarins Spa, Starck’s once-signature all-white aesthetic is deployed across multiple heavenly spaces, including an advanced hydrotherapy circuit, a swimming pool, and seven treatment rooms. Rounding out the scene are the hotel’s five restaurants and lounges, each offering a distinct aesthetic and culinary experience. A highlight is the Michelin-starred Il Carpaccio, with its Sicilian, Baroque-style interiors and remixed Italian cuisine rooted in transalpine ingredients. (leroyalmonceau.com)

Le Bristol Paris

Le Bristol was the first hotel in France to be awarded Palace status—and for good reason. To start, it’s the epitome of timeless French elegance in the most esteemed district in Paris, Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

Since its debut in 1925, Le Bristol has been a magnet for the cultural and fashion set, with famed regulars such as Cristóbal Balenciaga,

Coco Chanel, and Pablo Picasso. Nowadays, as part of the prestigious Oetker Collection, the property remains equally pertinent and popular by excelling in the kind of elevated Parisian stay that travelers desire.

Given the hotel’s recent property-wide renovation and even newer addition of three presidential suites, guests can look forward to Louis XVI refinement across residential-style units, where touches by top interior design and style names abound (think: Loro Piana cashmere throws and Pierre Frey fabrics). Fresh takes on

neoclassical furnishings balance past and present across pastel-tinged interiors that feel light, spacious, and soft. In the common areas, elements such as the glass-and-wrought-iron birdcage elevator and centuries-old art and tapestries endure thanks to museum-quality upkeep.

French celebrity chef Éric Fréchon (a name synonymous with Parisian haute cuisine) oversees the property’s four restaurants, meaning every meal is one to remember. The best is Epicure, which is decorated with three Michelin stars and features some of the most celebrated dishes to be found in this global capital of gastronomy. Two such standouts are the Candele Macaroni, a daintier take on cannelloni stuffed with black truffle, artichoke, and duck foie gras, gratinated in black truffle juice with mature Parmesan; and a creation called Leek, a caramelized giant leek in seaweed butter, partitioned by tartar of petite white pearl oysters.

Overall, Le Bristol is unapologetically Parisian and unequivocally chic in all facets of its operation. It represents yet another idyllic Palace at which to stage your City of Light fairy tale. Now the narrative is entirely yours to script. (oetkercollection.com) «

Crown JEWEL

AMAN NEW YORK FUSES CONTEMPORARY ASIAN DESIGN AND WESTERN LUXURY TO CREATE A TRUE URBAN SANCTUARY

On the corner of 57th and Fifth in Manhattan, luxury hospitality brand Aman has introduced its signature Asianinfused minimalism and serene spaces, bringing a moment of calm to a city known for its electric energy.

Aman New York is the newest occupant of the landmark Crown Building, a palatial structure whose history is entwined with the mythology of New York City. Built in 1921, at the height of America’s Gilded Age, the Crown was designed by Warren & Wetmore, the architects behind such Manhattan icons as Grand Central Station and the Helmsley Building. Everything about the Beaux Arts icon feels exclusive, from its elaborate entrance to its gilded crown, famously finished with 30 gallons of liquid gold.

The interiors are impressive in a quieter way. As in other Aman hotels, the language of nature reigns supreme here. An extensive palette of woods contributes warmth, while metals add an urban edge. The genius is in details like a woven wood-andstone floor that recalls Asian rattan baskets,

and the signature starburst pattern of ancient straw marquetry.

All suites have working fireplaces—a first in Manhattan hotels—and murals inspired by Pine Trees , Hasegawa Tohaku’s sixteenth-century masterpiece that is now designated as a Japanese National Trea -

sure. Pivoting panels with backlit rice paper are bold architectural statements that also function as privacy screens.

Around the world, Aman properties prioritize wellness. In New York City, the 25,000-square-foot Aman Spa spans three floors and encompasses a hammam, Banya steam sauna, private Spa Houses, functional and integrative medicine, and immersion programs for lifestyle management. Aman devotees swear by the brand’s Wellness Method, which combines Eastern and Western traditions to nourish body, mind, and spirit.

Every experience across the hotel has been designed with well-being in mind.

Exclusive Journeys offers explorations of the city that you can’t find elsewhere. Photography workshops with Leica master photographers, including celebrity lensman Mark Mann, teach portraiture and cityscape composition. Studio tours connect guests with the city’s artists. Dario Ossola, chef of signature restaurant Arva, takes guests along to the local markets, then teaches the art of making pasta before preparing a meal with the chosen ingredients.

An experience that should not be missed is The Jazz Club, Aman’s tribute to the city’s legendary music scene. Though the moody, nostalgic atmosphere of a live jazz performance is unparalleled, shows include other music genres and DJ sounds as well. Enter through the private entrance and settle into the intimate, sultry space for beats and bubbles, Aman-style. (amannewyork.com) «

BACK ON TRACK

Remember that scene in Top Gun: Maverick when Tom Cruise catapults off the USS Theodore Roosevelt in his F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet? The clenched teeth. The facial contortions. The sharp intake of breath. Exciting stuff.

It’s precisely the same sensation you get when executing a launch-controlled acceleration run in the latest 640-horsepower, $230,000 Porsche 911 Turbo S rocket ship. Same clenched teeth. Same grimaced expression. Same tingle in the fingers.

And the best part? To experience this kind of thrill ride, you don’t have to travel to an aircraft carrier bobbing around in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. How about Atlanta instead?

We’ve come to the new and expanded

Porsche Experience Center a stone’s throw from the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, where the German sports machine maker has just added a second driver development complex called the West Track. The center itself has been open since 2015, and the original 1.6mile South Track has seen more than 400,000 car enthusiasts line up to drive the latest and greatest Porsche models.

This new West Track, which will operate in addition to the old South Track, takes things up a notch. It includes a 1.3-mile ribbon-ofasphalt Handling Circuit that incorporates grin-inducing elements from some of the world’s most iconic racetracks. Drivers can spiral down a section inspired by the infamous Corkscrew at California’s Laguna Seca, sweep around a version of the banked, wall-of-death Carousel from Germany’s Nürburgring circuit, and even snake through a section of curves reminiscent of the Tail of the Dragon road in the Smoky Mountains.

The fun doesn’t stop there: This 33-acre expansion includes some serious skillenhancing activities, such as a 196-foot diam-

62 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
JOURNEYS
THE NEWLY EXPANDED PORSCHE EXPERIENCE CENTER IN ATLANTA MIGHT JUST BE THE ULTIMATE THEME PARK FOR DRIVERS

eter skidpan, aka the Low-Friction Circle. This huge asphalt pad has a polished surface that, when drenched with water, offers Teflon-like grip. You can test your drifting skills and research the handling differences between, say, a rear-engined 911 GT3, a mid-engined Cayman, and an all-wheel-drive Panamera. Fun doesn’t even come close to describing it.

Then there’s the brand-new Ice Hill feature for those who want to know what it’s like to drive in Minnesota in January. With its 8 percent slope and water-soaked polished surface, it’s a test of driver and machine to reach the top. An all-wheel-drive Macan SUV is pretty impressive here.

Move across to the new Autocross course to engage off-the-line acceleration and then test your handling and braking techniques through a series of slaloms. But nothing compares to a launch-controlled zero-to60-mph blast in a 911 Turbo S or a spookily silent, all-electric Taycan Turbo S, both

of which clock in at 2.6 seconds. The technique involves planting your foot hard on the brake pedal while you mash the throttle, then simply come off the brakes.

But for the ultimate thrill drive, a couple laps on the Handling Circuit behind the wheel of a 502-hp 911 GT3 will give you enough grins to last a lifetime. The sheer precision and agility of this speed machine, its balance and poise, not to mention its monumental stopping power are nothing less than otherworldly.

That’s the beauty of this program: variety. With pretty much every model in the Porsche lineup to choose from (the fleet is around 130 cars) you can drive everything from a 300-hp 718 Boxster to a gut-wrenching 750-hp electric Taycan Turbo S.

The sessions are typically 90 minutes and come with a Porsche driving coach in the passenger seat. Prices range from $450 for a customizable session in a Boxster or Cayman, to $1,275 for back-to-back blasts in a 911 Turbo S and 911 GT3. Book it for a special occasion, to sharpen your driving skills, or just because you’ve always wanted to drive a Porsche in anger. Or book it to be like Tom. You won’t be disappointed. AQUATIC SPACESHIP

NUMARINE’S

WITH SPEED

BY HOWARD WALKER

If asked to picture a trawler-style expedition yacht, you’d probably conjure images of a waterborne pachyderm plodding across oceans with the velocity of a koala high on eucalyptus.

Until recently, the 85-foot 26XP from Turkey’s Numarine has fallen into that category. With its slow-churning 435-hp diesels and wave-splitting bulbous bow, it’ll cruise all day at a sedate, fuel-sipping 9 knots. Across oceans on a tankful? Not a problem.

Over in Europe, where a gallon of diesel costs roughly the equivalent of kryptonite, boaters are happy to go slow. That, however, is not the case in the United States, where we tend to have a need for nautical speed. With that in mind, at this year’s Palm Beach International Boat Show, Numarine pulled the silk off its latest U.S.-focused offering, the 26XP Fast.

The party trick here is that by taking an original 26XP hull, lopping off that bulb on the bow,

removing the previous deep keel, and adding a few underwater strakes, the yacht can go from a full-displacement design to a semi-planer. Of course, it helps if you squeeze in a pair of thundering 1,800hp MAN V12 turbo diesels to deliver a combined 3,600 hp. Pedal to the metal it can now hit an impressive top speed of 31 knots, making it the fastest 85-footer in its class. And it’ll happily cruise all day at 23 knots. Need to cover some ground? Throttle back to around 10 knots and it’ll run for more than 1,800 miles on a tank. That’s Miami to Maine.

One of the drawbacks of installing muscly engines is usually increased noise and rumbly vibration. But because Numarine’s founder and CEO, Ömer Malaz, dislikes all things cacophonous, he went overboard (excuse the pun) to make this 26XP as hushed as possible.

64 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED JOURNEYS
BRAND-NEW 85FOOT 26XP FAST COMBINES SPACE

He worked with Dutch vibro-acoustic experts Van Cappellen to reduce so-called NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness), focusing on engine mounts, exhausts, and sound-deadening. They also came up with an optional “Extra Silent” package that involves installing an extended hardtop with solar panels, which enables the yacht to run through the night at anchor on battery power alone, without the usual generator buzzing in the background. Speaking of generators, the Silent system means only one is needed.

Malaz showed off his new pride and joy at the Palm Beach show. He used the word “space” in pretty much every sentence, but was justified in doing so considering that this 85-footer has the look and feel of a 100-plusfooter. In fact, you could land a helicopter on the top-deck flybridge, which spans more than 700 square feet and is estimated to be the biggest in its class. Up here, there’s space for a dining table for eight, an outdoor kitchen, and loungers on each side of the central helm.

Stroll around the wide, deep side decks up to the bow to find a large sofa and twin oversize sun pads. But the pièce de résistance is the main deck-level saloon, with its floor-toceiling windows, towering headroom, and huge sliding doors leading to the vast aft deck.

Below decks, there’s a quartet of cabins with beds for eight, including a full-beam primary suite with a sumptuous bathroom and office area. There are also twin cabins for the three-strong crew.

While the exterior lines of the 26XP are polarizing (they’re from the drawing board of Turkish designer Can Yalman), I love the bold angles, near-vertical bow, and reverse-angle pilothouse windows. The razor-sharp creases flowing back from the bow are works of art.

The other beauty of this 26XP Fast is that it can be driven off the lot. As we speak, Fort Lauderdale–based Denison Yachting has this ready-to-go example listed for $6.95 million. Talk about instant gratification. «

When Gabriella Katia was asked to attend a party at the Crown residence in Port Royal, she had no idea she would meet the man she would marry nine years later: Matt Crown. After a touching proposal, an exuberant his-her shower, and 18 months of wedding planning, the pair exchanged vows at The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach—a bliss-filled, three-day event fit for a king and queen.

She Said Yes

“Yes.” It’s a simple one-syllable word that has the capacity to change the course of someone’s life forever. When Matt, who owns and operates a cryptocurrency data center, popped the question to Gabriella, founder of Katia Productions, on the beach located at the Port Royal residence of Ralph and Shelly Stayer, it kicked off a string of lavish connubial events that would officially unite them in front of family and friends.

Matt, with much planning and coordination help from Shelly, had an intricate sandcastle constructed, as well as a beautiful beach picnic assembled.

“Barbara Crown, Matt’s mother, is a dear friend of mine,” says Shelly. “They wanted the engagement to be on the beach and asked for my assistance. I immediately engaged a sand-sculpture artist to turn our beachfront into the most romantic place on earth. The final creation was gorgeous; on a whim, we

decided to line the sculpture with candles, little lamps, and flowers.”

“He tricked me by telling me we were going to attend a beach party at the Stayers,” explains Gabriella. “He even invented a fake flyer for the event.”

When Gabriella and Matt arrived at the Stayer residence, Matt walked her down to the beach where stood the elaborate sand edifice. Matt got down on one knee, but Gabriella doesn’t recall what happened immediately following; her excitement got the best of her.

“I actually completely blacked out because of the adrenaline,” she recounts. “I didn’t even know if he had gone on one knee until I saw the photos from it all.”

Once Gabriella was able to regroup and the two were able to enjoy and soak in the excitement, Matt’s parents and a few close friends, including the Stayers, joined the proposal party.

And there was perhaps a good omen involved as well. As Gabriella remarks, “There were storms all around us, but on our small section of the beach, there wasn’t one drop of rain. That was a miracle; I believe it was meant to be.”

Showered with Love (and Wine)

Gabriella, a lover of wine (specifically reds), often sips side by side with Matt’s mother, Barbara. In fact, they usually gather for a glass and good conversation a couple times a week. “My mother-in-law is the best,” says Gabriella.

One evening, while sipping and planning the bridal shower, the two oenophiles came up with an idea. They decided the bridal shower should embrace a wine theme.

The his-her shower—held December 3, 2022, at Matt’s parents’ Port Royal home— was a gathering of 80 guests. It included a wine-pairing dinner for the ladies on one side of the residence; steaks and hand-rolled cigars were savored by the guys on the opposite side of the home.

A highlight for Gabriella was a wine-blend-

ing game, another idea she and Barbara birthed. “The women were divided into groups of four,” Gabriella notes. “Each group was tasked with combining wines to create a blend for me. They were asked to come up with a name and label for the wine and then present their creations to me. Then, I selected a winner based on taste and creativity. It was a ton of fun, and people were so involved in the game.”

After their respective dinners, the guys and gals merged, the soiree continued, and the group danced the evening away to tunes from a DJ.

“I loved the fact that it was a joint bridal shower; I thought that was extremely special,” remarks Gabriella.

A Regal Affair

With Matt’s last name of Crown, the inspiration for the wedding was inherent. It would be a majestic celebration, and The Mar-a-Lago Club— where Matt’s parents, Bob and Barbara, have

been members for more than 30 years—seemed a perfect fit.

“We knew there would not be a better place for our wedding,” says Gabriella. “I love the architectural elements of Mar-a-Lago and the way it feels like an estate and not like any other hotel. Plus, the photo ops there are truly amazing.”

The wedding would take place across three days, commencing on Friday, February 24, with a private wedding ceremony on the Mar-a-Lago lawn involving only immediate family. The bridal party was likewise kept all in the family. The maid of honor was Matt’s sister, Cristina Jones, and the best man was her husband, Quincy.

Gabriella wore a timeless wedding gown by Viktor&Rolf as her father, Tom Davis, walked her down an aisle leading to an elevated stage with a backdrop constituting a three-point crown. Both the arches leading to the altar and the altar backdrop were elaborately covered in tens of thousands of fresh white roses and hydrangeas.

“We had a Catholic-based ceremony, but we kept it short and sweet,” explains Gabriella. “It lasted about 30 minutes, and there was a candle-lighting ceremony. Matt and I decided to exchange our vows in private.”

After the ceremony, a three-course dinner was held in the White and Gold Ballroom, where Matt and Gabriella also cut a cake. This festivity was infused with a sense of intimacy, allowing the bride and groom to focus on and enjoy their close family members, including their parents and siblings.

“I loved the pacing of the events,” says Gabriella. “Having the ceremony separate [on Friday] with immediate family allowed us to connect with them before things picked up on Saturday. Then, we were able to see and visit with friends the next day. Plus, it made the wedding feel longer.”

The guest list jumped from 24 people on Friday to 290 at Saturday’s reception, a formal black-tie affair. This event commenced with a cocktail hour by the pool at 5 p.m. Although Gabriella thought she was aware of the weekend’s complete itinerary, there was a sparkly surprise in store for her at the cocktail reception. As the sun settled in for the night, Matt, alongside his parents, presented her with a stunning crown. Fireworks lit up a soft sky shortly thereafter in celebratory fashion.

“They led me to the stage, as Game of Thrones music played. There was an actual throne, and they sat me down and presented me with a beautiful crown,” Gabriella says. “Matt loved this part; he was very excited for it.”

Following the crowning and fireworks, guests moved inside to the ballroom, which was intricately decorated, thanks to the help of Lisi Korn, owner of Miami-based Lisi Korn Signature Events. Korn was responsible for planning and designing all the weekend’s events, as well as the couple’s shower.

“We always make it our intention to design experiences based on couples’ personalities, lifestyles, priorities, and personal styles,” says Korn. “With this wedding, we certainly had something not many couples have, the Crown last name, which had a big influence on the design and elements incorporated.”

Twenty-foot chandeliers were hung in an already opulent space, and a tailor-made LED stage featuring customized graphics set the pulse for the exhilarating evening ahead. Matt and Gabriella made their entrance at the reception via a captivating Kabuki drop and then proceeded to dance to a band featuring four vocalists.

Another three-course meal was served, and

guests enjoyed the band’s performance. Poignant words were said, including from Matt’s father, Bob, and Gabriella’s father, Tom, who delivered a speech that warmed the hearts of all.

Around 11 p.m., the environment transitioned to a vivacious after-party, opening with an LED Champagne parade, complete with a dazzling drumline donned in LED-inspired attire. The band was replaced with a DJ, and guests danced and danced—and danced.

“The party continued to 4 a.m.,” reports Gabriella. “My dad even stayed that long. Everyone was dancing the entire time; there was never a dull moment.”

Guests, including Shelly Stayer, marveled at the wedding’s extravagance and level of detail. “The bride and groom spared no expense in creating a magical atmosphere, and the result was a wedding that will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come,” she notes.

The weekend concluded with a brunch that began on Sunday morning. Guests who had turned in early the night before enjoyed this occasion in the morning while the night owls rolled in a bit later. To this, Gabriella wore a striking cream Fendi pantsuit. “I wanted something completely different than the other dresses; it was my favorite outfit of the weekend.”

Matt and Gabriella have delayed their honeymoon until summer 2023; they plan to spend approximately two weeks in the South of France. Until then, they are enjoying life as newlyweds—including spending time with their animals: one dog, Kirby, and two Instagram-famous marmosets, Diddy Kong and Yeti Kong (@realdiddykong). They plan to split their time between Miami and Naples and eventually have children one day, who Gabriella says will be raised as Neapolitans.

About the wedding, Gabriella says, “Everything was completely seamless; it was the best weekend of my life.” «

SAVETHEDate

A couple’s expectations for their wedding day are exceeded when Hurricane Ian forces a change of venue

Abeautiful sea glass–themed wedding on the front lawn of a Naples beach resort—with the azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico rippling gently in the background—was planned for Sunday, February 26, 2023. The ceremony would take place in the late afternoon as the rays of the setting sun reflected in the sky, wowing out-of-town guests and bestowing a special blessing upon David Nee and Krysta Sylvester as they exchanged marriage vows.

David and Krysta’s story began when they met in a commercial real estate class in January 2020, just before a worldwide pandemic shut down the country. Seatmates, the two

exchanged business cards, but as Krysta recalls, “He had no business talking to me, as I was nursing a broken heart.”

Both David and Krysta grew up in the same area of the country—he in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and she in Youngstown, Ohio; both also came from families involved in the construction business.

Communication via text and social media remained purely professional until David commented on a particular post of Krysta’s—saying he hoped to one day taste her grandma’s much-loved Easter bread. Craving more of a personal connection than what social media offered, Krysta posted that any men who wanted to get to know her better should “pick up the

phone to call or ask for an actual date.” David heeded the suggestion, scheduling a call for the very next day.

Eventually the couple met in person—spending five hours talking and walking along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail in Pittsburgh. Their second date was an auto show, when and where they discovered they were both car aficionados. Many more dates followed, and the relationship blossomed.

Krysta was living in Naples,

having moved to assist with managing her family’s investment properties. She had obtained her residential and commercial real estate licenses in Florida while still working closely with the family business based in Ohio.

After finishing a hockey career in British Columbia, David moved back to his hometown of Pittsburgh to work alongside his father in the construction business. He contemplated a move to Jupiter, Florida, where friends lived,

84 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

but he had not yet made a final decision. He never considered Southwest Florida—that is until Krysta invited him to visit. On the drive from the airport to a burger lunch on Immokalee Road (a mere 20 miles), David fell in love with Naples. He extended his stay and soon after told Krysta he was going to study for his Florida residential real estate license.

On July 5, 2022, two years from the date of their first meeting, David invited Krysta for a walk on the same riverfront area in Pittsburgh where they enjoyed their first date. She thought nothing of the casual invite, only thinking it was odd that David was particularly concerned about the time and getting the walk started. He had good reason, as he had a couple of friends planted to record his planned proposal near a picturesque setting.

The question was asked and duly answered; the good news was quickly shared with family and friends. A lengthy to-do list was compiled. Many of the details quickly fell into place, like booking a beachfront ceremony for Sunday, February 26.

lead cake designer at Sweetified in Naples, would make the key lime and vanilla citrus cake and decorate it with edible rope icing and sea stars; a chocolate purveyor from Youngstown would provide candy; and the design team from Signature Florals in Fort Myers would decorate the room and tables using rattan baskets, chunks of driftwood, clear glass vases, and simple arrangements of flowers in muted coastal colors. They would also create Krysta’s dreamy asymmetrical orchidinfused bouquet.

Even Enzo, Krysta’s adorable rescue dog (part pit bull and part Great Dane), would have a role in the wedding ceremony—that of ring bearer. The couple later admits: “He stole the show.” Invitations were ordered and mailed. Melissa Daggett, owner and founder of The Wedding Planner MD, based in Naples, was

hired as a day-of coordinator. Then, on September 28, Hurricane Ian blew through Southwest Florida, causing massive destruction. The planned beachfront wedding site was affected; however, hotel staff assured the couple they would be fully operational by their February wedding date. In December, days before they were to drive north to celebrate Christmas with their families, an email from the hotel popped up in Krysta’s inbox asking the couple to join staff on a phone call. News followed that the hotel would be shut down indefinitely, and the chosen

date could not be honored. Alternate plans would have to be made.

Krysta had dreamed of a beach wedding. Even though there were available options at local country clubs and golf clubs, “there are golf clubs in Pennsylvania and Ohio,” she says, explaining she wanted something special. They called Daggett who suggested checking out other resort hotel options, in particular the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort. Krysta and David made a hurried trip to Marco Island. They immediately fell in love with the large resort hotel and did not wish to entertain any other options.

Would the chosen date be available? The couple had already been told by Daggett to look for the same date or risk losing guests. The JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort normally does not allow weddings during peak tourist season, but as Daggett explains, “When I told my contacts there what had happened, they graciously made an exception.”

There were still other issues that needed attention. “If you are Italian, the food better be good,” reminds Krysta. The hotel delivered, pro-

viding a fabulous menu to choose from—the catering department even offered one of the couple’s favorite wines as a beverage option.

An ocean-view bridal suite was available for the couple and despite it being season, rooms were available and blocked for guests—all expertly coordinated by the hotel’s Event Manager Liza Sherwin. Everything fell into place. The couple could not be happier. “We received six-star service,” says David.

January and February were spent finalizing the wedding details. Daggett explains that Krysta’s mother “was very meticulous about the details and vision of the wedding and helped communicate, organize, and get everything ready ahead of time.”

Daggett adds, “Even without stormy weather, plans rarely go exactly as

THE YOUNGSTOWN COOKIE TABLE

planned; I love taking those challenges and turning them into triumphs.”

Surrounded by about 80 family and friends, a sunset ceremony officiated by Pastor Russ Winn incorporating traditional Catholic readings, prayers, and a moment of remembrance to honor the deceased who could not be present took place under a perfect sky. “We had beautiful weather,” adds Krysta. “There was a slight breeze and no red tide—it stayed north.”

Sated with hugs, dances, toasts, and best wishes from their guests, as well as lots of sweet treats, the couple tied the proverbial knot. “Somehow and in some way, everything always seems to work out,” says Daggett. Krysta and David prefer to call it serendipity— the unplanned location provided a special day that far exceeded any expectations they had. «

It’s rare that a wedding reception—featuring a bride and groom from Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, with Italian, Greek, Slovak, and/or Hungarian ancestry—does not feature a cookie table.

It’s believed that the cookie table tradition became prevalent during the early twentieth century. Immigrants brought many of their traditions with them, including baking. As money was tight during the Depression, the cost of a wedding cake was often prohibitive. Family and friends would instead bake an amazing array of bite-size treats to serve at the reception as an expression of love for the newlywed couple.

David and Krysta were gifted with 18 different varieties of cookies. Her parents, Joseph and Kathy Sylvester, were tasked with driving the cookies down in the back of their SUV. There is a specific way to artfully arrange dozens of cookies. You stack them, cascade them, and group them in an elaborate display. On the morning of the wedding, Krysta relates that her mom— still in pajamas—snuck down to the hotel kitchen to supervise the arrangement of the cookies, making certain the cookie table would look as good as it tasted.

BOLD FLAVORS, COOL COCKTAILS, AND LOCAL FAVORITES

High Time FOR TEA

If a well-appointed room full of pink and white bone china, dazzling chandeliers, and a cool, chic vibe sounds like an appealing place to while away an hour or two, it’s time for a visit to Forever Fiore Tea Lounge. A version of this lush establishment started out in Fort Myers in 2019, but COVID took its toll, forcing the owner, Luara Maximo, to close the doors. Never fear, however. Maximo has relocated her fanciful concept that incorporates tea, a variety of fare, and preserved flowers available for purchase to a new space at 970 Fifth Avenue North, Naples. While there is a London Tea on the menu, this tea lounge differs from traditional English tea rooms by offering a variety of what Maximo calls “fusion teas.” Their Liquid Jade blend, for instance, includes organic white tea, organic green tea, and natural oil of bergamot, while their White Coconut is a blend of organic white tea, organic safflower, cornflowers, organic coconut, and more. Inventive food options include the Blueberry Grilled Cheese and the Croissant and Fig, among other selections.

“While we don’t target a specific demographic, our concept is to attract and expose all age groups to the world of teas,” explains Maximo. “This is a place where families and friends— no matter their ages—can come together and enjoy.” (foreverfioretealounge.com) –Karen

Let Them EAT CAKE

SWEET SLICES FROM THREE AREA BAKERS

A wedding cake is so much more than dessert. It’s meant to encompass the couple’s feelings for one another and the event’s theme and colors; of course, it must taste heavenly, too.

That’s a challenge that even some of the best bakers are hesitant to tackle. Nonetheless, there are some hearty and creative souls who are known for their wedding cake prowess. Here are three of them.

Lexie Verbruggen has been creating fancy multi-tiered wedding cakes for a dozen years in her bakery called Sweetified (sweetified.com), which began on Marco Island but is now in Naples.

Because of the subtropical location and the number of destination weddings she does, Verbruggen

offers tropical flavors along with the standards.

Among the popular choices these days are white cake with key lime mousse and a dense pineapple cake paired with cream cheese icing. In addition to a cake, many couples offer a dessert buffet loaded with cookies, brownies, and cake pops. Customization per personalities is popular, too.

“I made a cake for a bride who was a veterinarian and had five cats,” she says. “So I put little frosting paw prints up the back of the cake as a nod to their kitties.”

Jazmine Cuccuini, who has owned SassyCakes (sassycakesnaples.com) in Naples for a decade, is a fan of different flavors for each layer.

“That way there’s something for everybody so it

gets eaten up,” she explains.

Among her most popular combinations is a layer of brown sugar cake with salted caramel filling, one classic vanilla with fresh strawberries, and one lemon-blueberry layer with cream cheese frosting.

Clifford Parris, head baker and bakery manager of Tony’s Off Third (tonysoffthird.com), says since the pandemic, he has seen a trend toward smallertiered cakes.

“The flavors are mostly basic, with buttercream frostings rather than the fondant,” which looks great but doesn’t taste as good, he notes. “Traditional carrot cake with cream cheese icing is popular. A couple from Sweden was inspired by our key lime tarts, so we did layers of vanilla cake, layers of key lime filling, Swiss meringue buttercream frosting, and graham cracker crumbs on top.”

Smaller need not be plainer, Parris explains. Candied lemons, fresh florals, and foliage create an elegant look.

FUNKY FUNGI

Stropharia Mushroom Farm has built a loyal following in Naples with its fresh, organic gourmet mushrooms, which are sold at area farmers markets and served in discriminating restaurants such as Sails, Hyde N Chic, The Bohemian, and A Table Apart, to name just a few.

Now its king oysters, black pearls, pioppino, lion’s mane, and other fantastical fungi are the stars of Stropharia’s new storefront, which is situated in front of the warehouse in which these are grown at 5385 Jaeger Road in Naples.

“We’d planned to locate the store elsewhere, but the hurricane changed that,” explains Jor’El Schustrin, who owns and operates the farm and store with his brother, Sheth Schustrin.

The brothers have big plans for the store, where they sell fresh and dried mushrooms, mushroom empanadas, tinctures, lion’s mane fruit punch, locally grown microgreens, and more. They are holding Dining with Mushroom events, chef dinners, and other mushroom-related activities periodically.

The business has come a long way in the decade since Jor’El began tinkering with mushrooms at home after learning that lion’s mane mushrooms could be beneficial to his stepfather, who has Parkinson’s disease. Meanwhile, Sheth, a chef, and his family moved back to the area, and the pair decided to go into business together. The home project gradually expanded to fill the house, then a warehouse, then a bigger warehouse, and a bigger one still. And now there’s the store as well.

“We’re looking forward to bringing in all kinds of chefs and others with mushroom knowledge and teaching people about the health benefits and the many ways to use mushrooms,” Jor’El says. (strophariamushroomfarm.com) –K.F.

OPENINGS

Old Naples, New Concept

It seems appropriate that the newest concept by restaurateur Paul Fleming and his wife, Jody Goodenough-Fleming, should debut in Old Naples.

The couple live in Southwest Florida and have other business interests in the area. PJK Neighborhood Chinese Restaurant , featuring made-from-scratch coastal Chinese cuisine, is the latest concept from Paul Fleming Restaurants, run by Fleming and Goodenough-Fleming, the company’s CEO.

The restaurant, which opened this spring, boasts a sleek, contemporary atmosphere matched by artful presentations of traditional and modern Chinese dishes.

“Our chef partner Kayla Pfeiffer is passionate about the culinary arts,” GoodenoughFleming says. “Her cooking showcases the bold flavors of authentic Chinese cuisine that we all know and love as well as her own modern interpretations and fresh seasonal features.”

Among the specialty dishes featured on the menu are:

DIM SUM: Small plates include shrimp pot sticker, lobster rangoon, soup dumplings, chili pork wontons, and truffle-mushroom crystal dumplings.

Among the other restaurants the Flemings have developed are P.F. Chang’s, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Pei Wei Asian Diner, Z’Tejas, and Paul Martin’s American Grill.

They plan to expand the PJK Neighborhood Chinese concept and others to additional Florida locations. This includes the couple’s partnership with Smith Organics in developing the popular Lake Park Diner with new locations coming to Bonita Springs and North Naples. (pjkchinese.com) —K.F.

Take it OUTSIDE

June is National Camping Month and a great time for outdoor adventures with the whole family. Besides providing a heavy dose of fun, camping is a wonderful way to get fresh air, vitamin D, and exercise. It can also help lower stress and serve as a respite from technology and cyberspace. However, successful camping trips often depend on preparation. “The supplies you bring with you can make or break your trip,” explains Ashley Couturier, owner of Naples Outfitters. “It really is so important to take your time and get properly suited up.” Effective preparation includes everything from packing the right gear (don’t forget the sunscreen!) to understanding the conditions of the area you’ll be visiting. To take off feeling properly equipped and prepared, turn the page for Couturier’s tips on important items to pack and vital things to do. (naplesoutfitters.com) –Erika Klein

Three Camping Must-dos

Tell someone where you’re going. Talk through your plan with a trusted friend or family member, sharing your destination, general plans while there, and your expected return date. If you don’t return on schedule and they can’t get in touch, they’ll be able to notify the proper authorities.

Follow the ART method. Good camping prep and etiquette can be summed up with the ART method: being aware, respectful, and timely. Couturier reminds campers to be cognizant of factors like weather, potential hazards, and surrounding wildlife—and to prepare accordingly. She advises to respect the environment and to pack and bring out everything you brought in. Finally, don’t rush. “Take your time setting up and then take the time to enjoy what you came to do,” Couturier says. “If you can remember this, you are already ahead of the game.”

Take a first aid course. This requires some advance planning but may be critical when you’re outdoors and far from medical treatment.

“Having a basic knowledge of first aid never hurts,” says Couturier.

CAMPING MUST-HAVES 5

1. FIRST AID KIT: “I WOULDN’T GO ANYWHERE WITHOUT A REALLY GOOD FIRST AID KIT,” SAYS COUTURIER. AT MINIMUM, SHE RECOMMENDS IT CONTAIN PAIN MEDICATION, AFTER BITE (OR OTHER ITCH/STING RELIEF), A STOMACH SOOTHER, BANDAGES, SMALL SCISSORS, BURN RELIEF, ANY PERSONAL MEDICATIONS, AND SUNSCREEN WITH AN SPF OF AT LEAST 35.

2. WATER: BRING AT LEAST 1 GALLON PER PERSON PER DAY. “THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST,” NOTES COUTURIER.

3. APPROPRIATE CLOTHING: COUTURIER RECOMMENDS COOL, BREATHABLE FABRICS WITH A MOISTURE-WICKING FEATURE TO HELP PREVENT OVERHEATING.

4. STURDY SHOES: BESIDES PROTECTING YOUR FEET, THESE MAY HELP PREVENT A BACK OR KNEE INJURY.

5. MAP AND COMPASS: “PAPER MAPS ARE GREAT IN CASE CELL SERVICE IS LESS THAN IDEAL,” ADVISES COUTURIER. IF YOU’RE RELYING ON DIGITAL MAPS, MAKE SURE THEY’RE UPDATED FOR THE AREA AND AVAILABLE OFFLINE. —E.K.

Making Makeup PERMANENT

If your mornings involve a lengthy makeup routine, permanent makeup might be for you. The procedure uses surface tattoos to adjust the color and shape of your eyes, eyebrows, and lips.

“High-quality permanent makeup should look like a light day makeup,” explains Elza Orlova, a permanent makeup artist at the Naples Aesthetic Institute

Because the pigment is injected only into the top layers of the skin, she says it’s not very painful. According to Orlova, permanent makeup lasts around two to three years and does not smudge or spread.

Because it can only be removed with another procedure, however, she adds it’s important to choose a professional and to stick with regular makeup if you frequently change your style. She also cautions against permanent makeup if you have diabetes, hemophilia, epilepsy, or are pregnant. Nevertheless, Orlova says that for those who are allergic to regular cosmetics or who frequently reapply makeup throughout the day, it could be a beneficial option.

“Permanent makeup will not look bright and vulgar,” she says. “It will only delicately emphasize your natural beauty.” (naplesaestheticinstitute.com) –E.K.

Heat + Hair = HARM

If you notice your hair looks dull and is full of split ends, your locks may be experiencing heat damage. Dawn Lucas, a hairstylist and owner of Halo Hair & Beauty in Naples, says people often overuse heating tools, blow-drying then using flat irons or hair curlers that cause damage. If this sounds familiar, she has a few tips.

First, when blow-drying, keep the dryer in motion rather than letting the heat concentrate in one place. Instead of using the max temperature on your flat iron, limit it to 350 or 280 degrees Fahrenheit if you have particularly fine hair. “Less heat is better,” she notes.

Choosing a quality shampoo and conditioner matters, but most importantly, Lucas recommends using a heat protectant every time you apply heat to your hair. Pick one that matches your hair type; she recommends Matrix Mega Sleek Iron Smoother for frizzy and curly hair and Davines Melu Hair Shield for fine hair. Her favorite is Matrix Miracle Creator, however, a leave-in conditioner and heat protectant she says works for all hair types. Remember, heat damage isn’t inevitable. “It’s from us using and abusing our hair and not using the right products,” says Lucas. (halohairnaples.com)–E.K.

GUT HEALTH & WEIGHT LOSS

COULD OUR GUT BACTERIA DECIDE OUR WEIGHT?

The gut microbiome is a collection of microbes (100 trillion bacteria, fungi, and pathogens, to be exact) that live in our digestive tract. They perform basic functions, such as breaking down food, manufacturing vitamins, and metabolizing and producing hormones. But did you know that certain types or strains of bacteria affect how we store fat, balance glucose in our blood, and respond to leptin and ghrelin, the hormones that tell us when we are hungry and when we are full?

The wrong mix of microbes might just be the reason you can’t lose weight. When assessing this, however, it’s important to start by evaluating how you got to that point. A diet

high in processed foods and low in whole foods—especially fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—has been linked to a less diverse gut microbiome. Other foods that can diminish good gut bacteria include conventionally raised (not grass-fed) dairy and meat, and saturated fats like those found in processed meats and inflammatory oils like palm, canola, and vegetable.

The good news is that you can turn this around. By adding in certain fiber-rich foods

FOODS THAT FEED GOOD GUT BACTERIA

» Fiber-rich foods: berries, dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables

» Prebiotic foods: oats, Jerusalem artichokes (sunchokes), asparagus, bananas, barley, onions, garlic,

and eliminating low-fiber, high-fat foods, you can recolonize your gut and be on your way to not only weight loss but more nutrient absorption to improve all aspects of your health. A recent study published in the journal Nature Medicine even supports a correlation between the presence of certain gut microbes and a decreased risk of developing obesity, Type 2 diabetes, and

cardiovascular disease. Read on for more tips and recipes.

CAULIFLOWER AND LENTIL BOWL

INGREDIENTS »

1 head cauliflower

2 tbsp. olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup lentils

1 cup dinosaur kale

2 tbsp. pumpkin seeds

Fresh herbs of choice

» To make the vinaigrette, add the lime juice, coconut aminos, garlic, tahini, and honey to a bowl and whisk to combine. Slowly add in ice water until desired consistency is reached. Set aside.

» Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut cauliflower into florets and toss with olive oil. Arrange on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly brown. Finish with salt and pepper to taste.

HOMEMADE PICKLES

INGREDIENTS »

5 tbsp. sea salt

2 qt. roomtemperature water

TAHINI LIME VINAIGRETTE INGREDIENTS

Juice of 1 lime

2 tbsp. coconut aminos

1 garlic clove, grated

2 tbsp. tahini

1 tsp. honey

Ice water to thin

» Meanwhile, add 4 cups of water and the lentils to a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat. Simmer for 20 minutes until lentils are tender (not mushy). Drain any excess water if needed.

» Wash kale thoroughly and chop into thin ribbons. Add lentils, cauliflower, and kale to a bowl and toss with tahini lime vinaigrette. Garnish bowl with pumpkin seeds and fresh herbs.

» Lactobacillus: Strains from this family have been shown to help regulate appetite hormones and increase fat-regulating proteins, especially lactobacillus rhamnosus, lactobacillus amylovorus, lactobacillus sakei, and lactobacillus gasseri.

» Bifidobacterium: Strains from this family have been shown to increase fat-regulating proteins, especially bifidobacterium animalis.

5 small Kirby cucumbers

4 garlic cloves, slivered

2 tbsp. dill, chopped

1 tbsp. black peppercorns

» Combine salt and water until thoroughly dissolved. Clean, trim, and halve or quarter the cucumbers. Add garlic, dill, and peppercorns to the bottom of a mason jar. Arrange cucumbers inside. Pour in salt water, leaving an inch of room at the top, and seal lid.

» Keep on kitchen counter, as the fermentation process takes a few days. Check the progress daily. As the mixture starts to bubble, the lid may bloat, and you will need to release the gas to alleviate. Once bubbling stops and cucumbers have turned olive green, transfer to the fridge (usually after 5 days). The fermentation process will continue, but the pickles can be enjoyed after the 5 days.

FLOWER POWER

IN THE HEAT,

We are lucky enough here in Florida to be able to appreciate flowers at almost any moment and in any season. While I work with flower essences and leverage their healing potentials every day, it feels so good to put my professional gratitude aside and take in the etheric lushness of the floral world. Sitting in contemplation with a single bloom is one of my favorite forms of meditation, wondering at the buoyant beauty of the petals and inhaling each one’s unique aromatic qualities.

That human-to-flower connection is ancient and deep. With their delicacy, flowers bring us into full awareness and compel us to savor every moment. Maybe that’s why we include flowers in life’s most important milestones and celebrations, from Mother’s Day to Valentine’s Day, births to graduations, weddings to funerals. Flowers are our ceremonial offerings of love.

My favorite summertime blooms include not only the medicinal flowers I work with, but those that grow so abundantly in our garden. There are gardenias, which I love to set out in ice bowls throughout our home, and also jasmine, which boasts a dizzyingly delicious perfume and makes a great wedding gift. Another favorite is passionflower, which grows along my fence. You can lose yourself looking into the hypnotic depths of a passionflower. For me, each bloom is full of fascinating poetry.

Scientific studies have shown that just looking at an image of a flower can help to regulate negative emotions, decreasing the signs and symptoms of stress by lowering blood pressure and cortisol levels. Researchers have also found that having flowers around the home increases positive energy and supports feelings of optimism and compassion.

When we take a moment to recognize their subtlety and grace, flowers provide a spectacular connection with nature. Even in one of the most heavenly places on earth, their special potency is a reminder of all that is beautiful in the world. «

An exhibition of modern art, entitled “Three Degrees of Separation: Artistic Connections in the Permanent Collection,” is on display through July 30 on the first floor of The Baker Museum at Artis—Naples. A range of works from the museum’s permanent collection is divided into five sections, coming together in a novel way to tell the story of artistic connections in the Americas between 1907 and 1968. The exhibition provides glimpses into how artistic ideas were exchanged and shared in the early and middle twentieth century, as well as how avant-garde styles spread because of increased travel to and from both Mexico and Europe—ultimately showing how tightly knit the world is. On your next visit to Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, be on the lookout for Bolo, a 13-year-old reticulated giraffe. He’s easy to spot at over 16 feet, though he’s the shortest in the herd of four males. Zoo guests can marvel at these creatures’ long eyelashes and 18-inch tongues up close while hand-feeding them lettuce. Bolo also likes to snack on sweet potatoes, carrots, watermelon, and bananas, but he’s no fan of zucchini. “He will spit it out,” says keeper Rachael Cairo. You may be surprised to learn that giraffes have just seven vertebrae in their long necks, the same as humans. World Giraffe Day falls on June 21, so order a long neck this month and raise a toast to the world’s tallest mammal. –Patricia
