A GUIDING LIGHT It is often in giving that we receive our greatest joy. Our beloved publisher Ron Woods

embodied that sentiment. Though he passed away three years ago this month, his memory and philanthropy live on. He was a self-made businessman determined to pay his success CHARLIE MCDONALD

forward and leave the world a better place than when he entered it. His generous and purposeful actions throughout the years spoke volumes, and continue to do so through the Ronald J. Woods Charitable Trust, which supports the causes he held dear.

A lifetime animal lover, one of Ron’s most cherished companions was his German shepherd, Cooper. One of the charitable organizations Ron’s trust supports is Leader Dogs for the Blind (leaderdog.org), which helps those who are blind, visually impaired, or blind and deaf to lead more independent lives, thanks to uniquely trained guide dogs. The organization, which is headquartered in Michigan, hosted a week of training in Naples earlier this spring to introduce clients to their new leader dogs.

“Naples is a great place for the training because of the number of dogs, the busy sidewalks, and the traffic,” says Rod Haneline, vice president and chief programs and services officer for Leader Dogs for the Blind, which provides guide dogs to about 200 clients every

year. “A lot of our clients have connections in Naples with families who winter here. We

try to expose [them] to many different environments and situations so when they go home, where they will not have an instructor with them, they’ll be prepared to go out and travel on their own.”

The dogs also are trained for what is called intelligent disobedience. For example, when a client comes to a street crossing, the dog has to take everything into consideration quickly before obeying a command to move forward.

“If there is a quiet car the client hasn’t heard, or an obstacle in the road, or if they’re going in a wrong direction, the dog is trained to assess the situation,” says Susan Daniels, president and chief executive of Leader Dogs for the Blind. “If it’s not safe, they have to disobey the client’s command and take another route. This training has saved lives.”

The dogs begin making a difference as puppies. About a dozen years ago, Leader Dogs

go on to work with the official trainers.

“It has had an amazing impact,” Daniels says. “The recidivism rate for the inmates who raise puppies for us is less than 10 percent, compared to about 60 to 70 percent nationwide. It teaches them responsibility, accountability, and it gives them a purpose.” The in-

mate program started in Iowa and has since expanded to eight prisons, mostly in Michigan, but also Minnesota.

“Many of them leave prison and raise puppies for us once they get outside,” she adds. “Some have started their own businesses, whether it’s dog walking or dog boarding, because of the experiences they had raising a Leader Dog puppy.”

These canine companions have a ripple effect in creating positive benefits for the organization’s clients.

“If you see someone with a cane, people tend to scatter, but a dog is very social, so people want to meet the dog and

He would often turn the tables on his birthday and throw a party for underprivileged kids to give them presents. Ron believed so much in our youth that he built a high school in the mountains of Montana to help troubled teens learn life skills and lessons. And he hosted numerous Christmas celebrations for children who would otherwise never see a twinkling light, much less a present under a tree. Simply put, Ron lived his life always thinking of what he could do for others—and then did it. —Teri Evans

Fruity Freeze For Southwest Floridians, the warmer months mean one thing: mangos. The abundant tropical fruit is a boon in this area, with towering trees producing bushels of the fruit annually. To cash in on the bounty, slice and dice the orange-fleshed fruit and freeze a batch of Mango Berry Pops, a sweet treat that will help you beat the heat.

Ingredients 3 mangos (about 3 pounds), peeled and diced 6 oz. raspberries 6 oz. blueberries 2 cups coconut water 2 tbsp. light agave nectar For more recipes and

Gently push raspberries into the bottoms of ice-pop molds. Place diced mango into each mold on top of raspberries, then top with blueberries.

In a liquid measuring cup, mix coconut water and agave nectar, pour into each mold, about 1/4 inch from the top. Insert sticks into each pop mold. Freeze overnight. Remove from molds and serve immediately.

Christian Jules Le Blanc

A Curious Life Daytime dramas always feature good guys and dreadful villains. During the annual SoapFest Charity Weekend, the shows’ stars who flock to Marco Island are all heroes, coming to meet fans and raise funds for local children’s charities.

Among the actors attending is Daytime Emmy Award winner Christian Jules Le Blanc, a.k.a. Michael Baldwin on The Young and the Restless. His acting résumé includes stage and screen roles, and he is an award-winning artist. Le Blanc, a one-time kindergarten teacher, is currently writing and illustrating a children’s book in his free time, a novel titled Tales of the Louisiana Moon, which he says is a kind of Alice in Wonderland for Cajuns. We talked with the lively Louisiana-raised Renaissance man about his many interests and commitment to using his celebrity for good. —Kat Smith

NI: How many SoapFests have you attended?

Le Blanc: Two. My nephew is on the [autism] spectrum, so it fit in with things I like to participate in. It was the first time where I saw you not only get to visit, which I like to do, but you actually sit there with the kids. That’s the key. They don’t make it this big, somber, all-important event. It’s the celebrities and the kids. I find that genius; you rope celebrities in for that, and you rope them in for a lifetime. It stuns me that just by being on a show, or being a celebrity, you can attend a charity event and people will come because of you. It’s a quirky thing; it gives you higher value in the eyes of the public. But you get to go to these places and have experiences that underline how we are all connected—if you don’t buy into your own press.

Screen or stage?

I like to do both. I do love live theater because I have that energy. When I had to do my first screen close-up, the director told me to run around the studio twice, because you have to be very still.

What would surprise us about you?

I’m a freaky genealogist. I do the genealogy of people on the show. You would think they all want to be royalty, but no, they all want to be pirates or half AfricanAmerican. I found my producer’s real father, what his real name was. It melds all sorts of things I love, like detective work, and it actually produces something of value. It has an emotional impact on people.

A Sense of Wonder

The nonprofit group Bonita Wonder Gardens, established in 2015 with the mission of preserving the Everglades Wonder Gardens, got some great news at a recent private event hosted by supporters Steve and Connie McIntosh. The longstanding roadside attraction, which just celebrated its eightieth birthday, received generous donations from community members, most notably Bonita Springs residents Ernie and Sandie Schaub’s $50,000 gift. In total, the evening raised $85,000. The money will be used to enhance the historic property’s 3.5 acres of botanical jungle, which includes an alligator pool, duck ponds, an aviary, turtle and tortoise exhibits, a flamingo pool, and a butterfly garden. The nonprofit’s continuing goals include restoring the wildlife enclosures, nurturing the botanical beauty, establishing education programs, and encouraging the community to enjoy the historic gem, where rescued birds and reptiles now settle among the lush, old-growth plants. Into the Wild Beat vacation boredom with the Naples Zoo’s new summer camp program, Summer Camp WILD (napleszoo.org/ summercampwild), which runs June 13 through August 1. Designed for children aged 5 through 7 and 8 through 12, these weeklong camps will feature individual themes and offer activities including arts, crafts, and games in the zoo’s new portable classroom, A close encounter at the Naples Zoo’s python exhibit as well as behind-the-scenes tours and animal encounters. “It’ll be a very interactive experience,” says Stacy Graison, the zoo’s director of education. “Kids aren’t going to learn if they just stand there staring at the animal and hearing fact after fact.

They need to be engaged and really feel connected to the animals.” Over the course of the week, kids will have the opportunity to visit every exhibit at least once and learn how each one connects to the theme of their camp—whether it’s Zoo by Design, where they’ll get to create their own animal exhibits, or ZSI: Zoo De-tech-tives, where they’ll solve mysteries to earn detective badges. Other themes include Art Safari, where kids can make molds of zoo animals’ footprints, and Nurturing Nature, which will teach them about animal behavior and training. —Anna Bjorlin

Contemporary impressionist Paul Arsenault has set up shop on Third Street South, recently moving from Crayton Cove to the two-story Arsenault Studio & Banyan Arts Gallery (arsenaultgallery.com) in the white-columned building on the corner of Third and 12th Avenue South. Arsenault, well known for his color-splashed depictions of iconic Old Naples and Southwest Florida, and exotic locations around the world, has plenty of space to share with visiting artists. During season, the gallery hosted guest exhibitions by the likes of folk artist Dale Beatty, photographer John Gillan, and painter James P. Kerr. Though things quiet down a bit during the warmer months, Arsenault remains at his easel, painting images of the Calusa for the Marco Island Historical Society’s November “Windows and Doors” exhibit. He is also creating images for his 2017 Naples calendar. The gallery will be open all summer Mondays to Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and special summer events are in the works. Looking ahead, a fall show is planned featuring the art of John A. Ruthven and other prominent wildlife artists. —Kat Smith

T

he midday sun hangs high in a cloudflecked sky, dust whirling around in its brilliant light. Just as we’ve crested a grassy hilltop and cut the engine of our open-air ATV, the subject of our search fills the frame where the windshield ought to be.

A shaggy beast stands motionless, save for the slow, rhythmic stamping of a spindly front leg into the auburn dirt. Whether the gesture is in welcome or warning isn’t yet clear, but with unyielding eye contact and staccato snorts, he makes it known that we’re intruding on his turf—his and all the other members of his herd that are scattered around.

Apparently deciding we pose no threat, the

ungulate turns his attention back to the grass. I slide my iPhone out of my pocket and start snapping pictures.

“We need one of them to go stand on top of that ridge,” says guide and driver Ken Stinnett. He issues a breathy, baritone “Uuuuurt” in the animals’ direction—a peace offering of sorts—then resumes his own picture-taking through a telephoto lens.

The moment could not be more magical.

For anyone who’s been on an African safari, this experience might sound familiar. But it’s not a Cape buffalo or a rhino we’re watch-

ing, and I haven’t crossed an ocean—or the equator—to get here. It’s a herd of American bison that holds our attention captive on a warm, sunny September afternoon in the vast expanse of Ted Turner’s Ladder Ranch in Caballo, New Mexico.

Unlike Africa’s game reserves, which see tens of thousands of safari goers each year, Ladder Ranch (theladderranch.com) is relatively uncharted territory for tourists. In fact, at the time of my visit, it has been just days since media mogul and conservationist Ted Turner officially opened his private ranch for eco-tours

through his new travel company, Ted Turner Expeditions (tedturnerexpeditions.com). I am among the first travelers to gain access to the staggering 156,000-acre property and sleep, eat, and relax in the cozy ranch house on-site.

With just five bedrooms and not a check-in desk or valet stand in sight, I have the place to myself—the spacious living room with a giant stone fireplace and gleaming wood floors; the wide front porch with white wooden rocking chairs and majestic mountain views; the retro-style kitchen with twin fridges and eat-in nook; and the comfortable sleeping quarters, including Turner’s own sun-drenched master suite, Ted’s Room.

Included in the nightly rate—$6,000 for as many as four guests—is a handful of private staff (including a personal chef) who retreat to the bunkhouse next door when daily duties are done. Each morning, I wake to find the dining room’s hulking wood table set with fresh fruit and all manner of mains, from veggie omelets to French toast to blue-corn pancakes. The kitchen is stocked with soft drinks, snacks, and other provisions I have requested. And my house manager ensures that I never leave feeling uneasy about how suitable my shoes are for whatever adventure lies ahead.

A daily routine develops: As I finish my morning coffee, my private guide arrives and offers a brief on our next adventure on one of Turner’s properties in the area—walking through Ladder Ranch’s shallow streams, lush riparian forests, and desert grasslands; hiking to dizzying heights at the otherworldly 350,000acre Armendaris Ranch; and soaking in natural

hot springs at Sierre Grande Lodge & Spa. At the onset of each new adventure, I’m skeptical it can’t possibly top the first afternoon’s bison encounter—and each evening, I return to my temporary home on Ladder Ranch in disbelief over what I’ve seen.

On the final morning of my visit, I squeeze in one last outing before heading to the airport: a walk through Ladder Ranch’s soaring slot canyons, where ancient petroglyphs and other precious artifacts are still on full display. Feeling absolutely miniature in my environment, I turn my face skyward and start snapping pictures of the rock cliffs. I want to capture that perfect moment to remind myself how special and spectacular the experience on Ladder Ranch has been. But to drive it is to adore it. It feels faster than a tennis ball off a Federer serve. Porsche claims it rushes from standstill to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, but subjectively it seems even quicker than that.

The demonic exhaust heightens this insane acceleration. As the flat-6 shrieks toward its red line, it sounds like an F-16 on full afterburner. Lift off the gas and the Spyder will snap and snarl, crackle and pop as vocally as a Nascar stock car on the Daytona banking.

Anyone who decrees the days of the stick shift are over should be required to take a spin in the Spyder. Its stubby shifter slices through the 6-speed gate like a box cutter through warm butter. It’s light, precise, and an absolute joy to use.

Unfortunately, the upper limits of the Spyder’s on-road handling are meant for the racetrack, the only place where you can come close to determining when the 10-inch rear tires relinquish their awesome grip.

On normal highways and byways, no matter how sinewy, the Spyder sticks to the blacktop like gum to velvet. And with brakes borrowed from the much heavier 911 Carrera S, hitting the center pedal

is a bit like stopping time.

The Spyder is at its best with the top down, in part because it’s a terrific experience, but mostly because the cloth roof is such a pain to raise and lower.

While it’s a huge improvement over the flimsy bimini roof from the 2010 Boxster Spyder, this one still requires plenty of tugging, snapping, and shuffling around the car. Anyone who has ever used the one-handed folding top on a modest Mazda Miata will fall down laughing.

An inconvenient roof, though, is a small price to pay for a car that delivers so much. A future classic? You bet. Don’t make it a coulda, woulda, shoulda. Invest in this thrill ride before it’s too late. «

In June, the Taste Italia Tour immerses diners in the food and wine of Sardinia, the large island in the Mediterranean where the culture reflects influences from 400 years of Spanish rule. Some citizens still speak a form of Catalan today. One of Dalton’s featured dishes, this Aragosta alla Catalana—poached lobster salad with fresh tomatoes—is a refreshing mix of lobster, pickled celery, celery hearts, Belgian endive, Calabrian chili, red onion, baby heirloom tomatoes, and lemon dressing. Of course, no authentic Italian meal is complete without wine. Born and raised near Hyderabad, India, a place famous for Mughlai cuisine, Asif R. Syed has been cooking from an early age. Before opening his restaurant 21 Spices by Chef Asif (21spicesdining.com) in East Naples, Syed served for 14 years as the executive chef at the Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort. He was named the Curry King at the Tampa Bay International Curry Festival in 2013 and 2015. Last year, Syed competed on Guy Fieri’s reality cooking show, Guy’s Grocery Games, which inspired him to open 21 Spices last December. What’s a more manly cuisine than authentic barbecue? Kansas City transplant Dave Higgins, a multi-award-winning pitmaster, has opened I Burnt Mine Barbecue (iburntmine.com) in East Naples. You may need to treat Pop on Saturday, as the restaurant has not yet opened for Sunday hours. But he won’t mind, once he sinks his teeth into blue-ribbon pulled pork, baby back ribs, or a burnt-ends sandwich.

What makes it unique is the gallery, selling artisan-made goods.

Since moving to Naples in 2007 from Zimbabwe, mother-daughter owners Nicola Bunnett and Stephanie Bunnett wanted to open a business that would connect African artisans with the rest of the world to bring them income and visibility.

They offer unusual jewelry and leather goods, artwork, and home decor items. The Bunnetts promote locally sourced goods and businesses as well. They feature a local artist’s work each month, hold art classes, and host inspirational speakers.

Naples-based Black Tulip Coffee supplies coffee beans, and baked goods are made by Mikkelsen’s Pastry, Naples. The Bunnetts are ecstatic with the reception they’ve received so far. “The American Dream is alive and well through kindness,” Nicola says.

Talk to almost any Riesling producer and you will hear these wines are perfect for the Florida climate, lifestyle, and cuisine. In the next breath, you’re likely to hear the lament that not enough people in Florida drink them.

The stigma of Riesling has always been that the wine is too sweet.

However, this is generally untrue. Riesling, which can range in style from dry to sweet, has much better balancing acidity than Moscato, the sweet wine that seems to be the darling of the Washington State moment. In fact, many Rieslings are technically and New York’s Finger Lakes offer a climate conducive to growing Riesling.

The resulting wines are top-notch.

drier than a California Chardonnay that was picked extremely ripe and aged for years in oak barrels.

Germany has long been the mother lode for the varietal, where slightly more than half the world’s Riesling is made, but there are some exceptional bottles from other parts of the world. What follows is the best of the rest.

Alsace: Ownership of this border region has shuttled back and forth over the past few centuries, resulting in German wines made in a French style. Because of the warm air trapped by the Vosges Mountains, the style of Riesling made there tends to be richer and more full-bodied than wines made in the region of the Mosel or even the Rhine. Start with an entry-level wine from a reputable producer such as Hugel, Trimbach, or Domaines Schlumberger, which will cost $20 to $25. For a glimpse of exactly how good things can get, check out the glorious Trimbach Clos Sainte Hune ($200) or the remarkable Grand Cru Clos Windsbuhl from Domaine Zind Humbrecht ($85).

Washington State: The Columbia Valley’s warm days and cool nights provide the perfect backdrop for making world-class Riesling. First among equals is Eroica ($20), a joint venture between Chateau St. Michelle and famed Mosel vintner Ernst Loosen.

The wine is rich and assertive, with vivid fruit and crisp acidity. Looking for a real value? Try Hogue Cellars, either in the regular version ($10) or the Genesis bottling ($14).

region. The pioneer in this area was Dr. Konstantin Frank, a Ukrainian immigrant who founded Vinifera Wine Cellars in 1962. The Dr. Frank Dry Riesling ($18) is a reliable bottle. Other wineries to seek out include Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, Ravines Wine Cellars, Red Newt Cellars, and Anthony Road Wine Co. They may require an Internet search, but they’re well worth it.

Australia: When Americans think of Australian wine, they tend to visualize massive, full-bodied reds such as Shiraz or GSM (Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvedre) blends. One of the country’s best-kept secrets is the stunning Riesling made all over South Australia, particularly in the Clare and Eden valleys. from Henschke ($40) and Bin 51 by Penfolds ($25) have the best pedigree. Other good bets, each priced around $14 to $17, include Pikes Traditionale Riesling, Clare Valley; Pewsey Vale Dry Riesling, Eden Valley; and the Yalumba Y Series, South Australia.

A note on food pairings: Many accessibly priced Rieslings make ideal companions for a late afternoon rendezvous around the pool, and are well suited to light appetizers or finger foods. As you ascend the quality scale, wines from cold climates are a great match for seafood dishes of all sorts, as the prominent acidity complements the flavors of fish or shellfish. The best examples pair with white-meat dishes of chicken, veal, or pork in complex sauces. Because of the high acidity levels, the top Rieslings age very well, and some of them—if purchased young and stored properly—can easily outlive their owners. «

Sunscreen may be a staple in your summer beach bag, but that doesn’t mean you’re covered, even if you slather it on. Dr. Dunnett Durando, a dermatologist with Riverchase Dermatology in Naples, shares five of the most common sunscreen mishaps and how to avoid them.

Mistake: Applying sunscreen too late.

Do this: Apply it to dry skin at least 15 minutes before going outdoors to give it time to take effect and prevent a burn.

Mistake: Going for a swim too soon.

Do this: Even after applying water-resistant sunscreen, wait at least 15 minutes before going for a swim. Reapply at least every two hours, immediately after swimming, and more often if you sweat a lot.

Mistake: Using the same bottle for too long.

Do this: Check the expiration date, and if there isn’t one, write the date the sunscreen was purchased on the bottle and toss it after one year.

Mistake: Leaving the bottle in the car.

Do this: Avoid putting the bottle in extreme heat, which can make the product less effective. Put it in the cooler whenever you’re at the beach or on your boat; otherwise, keep it at room temperature.

Mistake: Skipping over important areas.

Do this: Remember to always apply sunscreen on your neck, ears, back, tops of your feet—and if you have thinning hair, apply it to your scalp or wear a wide-brimmed hat. Plus, swipe on a lip balm with a minimum SPF 30. —Liza Grant Smith

Family Time Eat Mindfully Naples residents have been hearing a lot about the Blue Zones Project but may not know just what it’s all about. The comprehensive community initiative focuses on finding ways to help people create healthier, more fulfilling lives by making seemingly small changes and better choices for the mind, body, and soul. The project is based on several principles to live by, such as eating more mindfully, becoming more active in your every day life (and that includes finding an outlet for stress, such as yoga and meditation), spending more time with family, and surrounding yourself with a supportive circle of friends.

Blue Zones LLC, which created the project, grew out of a National Geographic expedition undertaken by explorer Dan Buettner. His findings identified common lifestyle practices of five disparate cultures with a high number of centenarians (Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California).

“When individuals and organizations participate—from work sites, schools, faith-based organizations, and homeowner associations, to restaurants and grocery stores—the small changes contribute to measurable benefits, including lower health-care costs, improved productivity, and a higher quality of life,” says Deb Millsap, executive director, Blue Zones Project-Southwest Florida (southwestflorida .bluezonesproject.com).

A few years ago, a wellness initiative within NCH Healthcare System helped to significantly reduce the company’s cost to insure its employees and their families from an annual average $16 million to $10 million. NCH’s CEO Dr. Allen Weiss began looking for a model to extend 94

such benefits to all Southwest Floridians. After discovering the Blue Zones Project, Weiss was instrumental in bringing it to our area with financial sponsorship by NCH Healthcare System.

In this first year of the eight-year project, nearly 130 local organizations—including schools, restaurants, and many other businesses— have signed on to participate, and at press time, a dozen had officially earned the Blue Zones Project Approval certification.

“When enough individuals and organizations get involved,” Millsap says, “it creates a tipping point for sustainability of a culture that helps to reinforce healthy choices.”

Dr. Eric Hochman of Gulfshore Concierge Medicine in Naples and president of the Collier County Medical Society, is a champion of Blue Zones. “I heard about it through the community and started doing my own research,” he says, noting its approach to wellness is similar to his own.

With a yoga therapist, registered dietician, and health coach as part of his practice, Hochman teaches Blue Zone principles to his patients and is working on becoming a Blue Zones–approved workplace.

“It’s really intuitive. Most of us probably had an idea these things are healthy for us, but the program gives a concrete, goal-structured approach that each patient can work on at their own pace and level,” says Hochman. He also is working with Millsap and the Blue Zones corporate team to create the national pilot project for physicians who want to earn Blue Zone certification for their practice. The national office does not currently have any type of physician certification, so this pilot would provide the framework for other offices across the country, according to Hochman.

“For anybody who sees this for what it is, a project to improve all our well-being and longevity, this is a no-brainer,” he says. —Kat Smith

The Big Chill Chilling out is decidedly in when it comes to a popular therapy, particularly for pain relief. You may have heard of cryotherapy after the initial buzz from professional athletes and celebrities. Today, cold-air therapy is becoming mainstream for those suffering from painful, and often debilitating, inflammation.

“I would suggest that cold-air therapy applies to virtually everyone who is taking ibuprofen or is using an ice pack or ice bath,” says Roger Nolan, co-founder of USCryotherapy (uscryotherapy.com) and managing partner of the company’s Naples location (one of 13 across the country), which opened late last year. Nolan’s passion for cold-air therapy began after it helped to alleviate his own knee problems. While there are varying cold-therapy methods, USCryotherapy uses a proprietary cooling system that does not require liquid nitrogen as others do.

Treatments include whole-body or localized cryotherapy. The whole-body chamber has space for up to four people and offers the option of playing music, which inspires some to dance to pass the frosty time. The goal is to expose your body to temperatures that range from 140 to 150 degrees below zero for an average of two and a half to three and a half minutes so that your skin temperature drops more than 30 degrees. The drop triggers your body’s natural “fight or flight” mode, and then the autonomic nervous system kicks in and moves blood to the core and away from the inflamed joint, which reportedly alleviates pain and improves mobility.

Cold-air therapy is not for everyone, though. Nolan says all potential clients must fill out a detailed questionnaire and undergo an assessment before entering the chamber. They are monitored continuously during treatment. Of course, it’s always best to check with your doctor before trying a new therapy. —Liza Grant Smith

Summer Art Art lovers continue to bask in the beauty of creative works long past the hustle and bustle of season. The Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs (artcenterbonita. org) will hold its Summer Exhibition June 3 to 23 in the visual arts center. Among the featured artists is octogenarian Joan Brechin Sonnenberg, who has been creating large-scale works that alternate between realism and abstraction in various media for more than 70 years. Painter Eileen Walden Johnson’s energetic, colorful abstract pieces and works by contemporary abstract acrylic artist Betsy D’Jamoos will also be highlights of the exhibit. Even in the “second season,” art is on tap in the heart of Southwest Florida. —Kat Smith

Paddle Power Last chance to enjoy a Naples tradition. Bring the family to Crayton Cove to witness the swan song of the Great Dock Canoe Race (greatdockcanoerace.com) May 14 when the classic event will launch its fortieth and final races. What began as an end-of-season celebration of The Dock at Crayton Cove’s inaugural year in 1977 evolved into an annual community event that draws thousands of spectators. Onlookers can enjoy the parade of decorated canoes that compete for a $1,000 prize, the Tippycanoe VIP Sprint, and two main races for professionals and amateurs. “Our theme this year is ‘The Last Dance,’ a throwback to the first canoe race,” says Kate Walter, a representative for the organizers of the event. “We wanted to go back to our roots with a ’70s disco theme, so everyone is invited to dress up in their bell-bottoms and wigs for the event.” Proceeds from this year’s race will be part of a $5,000 grant awarded to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Collier County, to help fund the organization’s mental health screenings and education for local children dealing with mental illness. —Anna Bjorlin

, executive director of the Naples Botanical Garden, is well known for leading NBG’s growth over the past decade. His tenure saw the addition of new gardens, a research and development center, and the most recent expansion, a new visitor center and café. After a decade at the helm, Holley will retire at the end of the year. His career in public gardens began nearly 40 years ago at Royal Botanical Gar2 den in Burlington, Ontario. He also led the Cleveland Botanical Garden before moving to Naples. Holley plans to remain in the area after retirement.
