Dear Dr. Fox: The other day I picked my kid up from school and I heard one of his friends ask him if I was his grandma. I was shocked, but took a long, hard, objective look at myself in the mirror.

I don’t think I’m ready for a facelift yet, but I notice that some of the lines around my mouth and nose have definitely gotten deeper over the last few years. Is there anything other than a facelift that can be done about this?

Surprisingly, not only is this one of the most common problems people come to see me for, but it is also the easiest to address. You’ve probably noticed that many of the celebrities in Hollywood don’t seem to be aging at the same rate you are. It’s not because they’re not, it’s because they’re doing something about it. There are many types of fillers that you’ve heard of like juvederm, restilyne, collagen, etc., but in the case where you’re not ready yet for an early facelift, what I suggest is either radiesse or fat injections. Radiesse can be done quite easily in about half an hour with immediate results that last for about one year. Alternatively, if you are seeking a permanent solution, a fat injection is a very practical choice. From a cost perspective, fat injections are definitely more cost-effective than yearly fillers.

Dear Dr. Fox: As I am quickly approaching 60, I have wanted to take better care of myself. I’ve started exercising and have lost some weight, but now that I’ve lost the weight, it seems like I look older.

Can you explain this to me?

A:

This is more common than you think. What has happened is that not only have you had a reduction in volume, but also a reduction in the supporting structures of your skin, or both.

In order to improve this you need to elevate the tissues back to their previous locations and you have to reduce the excess skin. You may also need to restore volume in some areas of your face, be it Radiesse or fat injections, to reestablish a youthful appearance. This would be called a vertical facelift. As long as you elevate in the correct direction (vector) you can actually look better than before you lost your weight. Your goal should be to achieve a more youthful look, not the obvious plastic

Dear Dr. Fox: I had a facelift a number of years ago and I know that I’m going to need another one someday, but I’m trying to decide when is the best time to have it redone. I’m 72 right now.

Well, this is the age that you now need to make a decision as to whether or not you are ever going to have another facelift.

If you have decided to have one someday, then why not have it done when you can most enjoy it instead of waiting until you’re older? It may be more practical to optimize your appearance as young as you can. By deciding for surgery now, you will be able to enjoy the benefits for many years to come. The facelift experience today is much different that it was even a decade ago. I’ve see secondary facelifts heal in as little as a week. Any touch up that needs to be done later in life shouId be handled by fillers or fat injection.

Dear Dr. Fox: I’ve had three kids and after 12 years of marriage I now find that I’m only comfortable being with my husband with the lights off. How involved is a breast augmentation and does it help in my situation?

A:

What you are describing may actually be two problems. The first is that when you are breast feeding, your breasts enlarge and are heavier. As such, gravity will work on you. After you stop breast feeding the milk producing tissue goes away and you are left with a volume deficit as well. A simple breast augmentation is a great solution if you only have volume-loss issues. If you have both volume and gravity issues, then a breast lift with a breast augmentation can help you recapture the body that you had before you had kids. I have had many patients tell me that their husbands derived the benefit from the increased comfort and confidence of their new bodies.

ecently, a group of friends and I reflected over lunch about the time and energy people in our community give to good causes. During our discussion, it dawned on me that all the names mentioned were benefactors of different ages and from all walks of life, from individuals to organizations small and large.

It doesn’t surprise me that teenagers are doing remarkable things, nor that the people who made their fortunes elsewhere and moved here to enjoy the good life are making generous contributions.

Likewise, the amount of work and financial contributions from year-round residents to support the community’s needs is also not surprising. And because people of modest means have long given a much greater share of their income and assets to charity than the truly wealthy, it wasn’t a shock when these individuals were mentioned.

What really grabbed me was what a unifying force charity, philanthropy or simply good works can be in a community. CEOs hammer nails next to a grocery store shelf-stocker while walls go up on a Habitat for Humanity house. Kids, a school teacher, a professional athlete, a middle manager who was recently downsized and a woman who just sold her software company for big bucks sit in the same pew at church and drop what they can into a special offering collection plate for a fellow parishioner dealing with a life crisis.

Do all of us realize what a difference—individually and collectively—we are making in Naples?

I have been here a long time, and although I travel frequently and am familiar with other wonderful communities, it occurred to me that I, like so many others, may sometimes take for granted the community spirit, good will and generosity of our neighbors.

I could throw some statistics at you, but that’s really not the point.

You’re already doing great things. The contributions are evident.

So let’s hammer nails, mentor children, help someone increase skills in this tough job market, rally friends to help with a good cause or take on the less-glamorous jobs at a local not-for-profit.

We’re all in this together. As I sat with those friends having lunch, I thought, overall, we’ve done a darn good job so far. Let’s stay the course.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT ome people eat to live. I live to eat.

I go through each day in a state of anticipation. As soon as I’ve savored one meal, I’m onto what’s next. Breakfast, mid-morning snacks, lunch, happy hour, after-work nibbles, dinner. I’m always hungry.

And how could I forget dessert? I have such a sweet tooth that my mother still tells people I have a separate stomach just for the sugary finale!

No matter what, I look forward to every single bite. It can be a gooey cheesesteak at casual waterfront joint Buzz’s Lighthouse, my godmother’s handmade Greek sausage or the finest cuisine a chef can dream up (Fabrizio Aielli, barely a day goes by when I don’t think of your liquid nitrogen flash-frozen pomegranate macaron). And I firmly believe dining out could very well be considered a competitive sport in Naples. For people here it’s usually a race against time to snag a coveted table at a new restaurant and an ongoing quest to sample cuisine at as many locales as possible.

Because I’m an über-foodie by nature, every month my favorite part of putting together this magazine is compiling the Taste section. So I had an absolute blast planning the feature stories for this issue, our annual ode to good food and drink.

There is much to excite epicures, starting with “The Party of the Year” (page 90), a private dinner where celebrity chef Tom Colicchio dazzled 152 lucky guests, who were later treated to a serenade from country pop star LeAnn Rimes. If that represents the ultimate swanky soiree, we swing to the other end of the spectrum for a look at where our food comes from. Visiting the area’s newest organic farm (page 100), started by a young member of the Collier family and others, yields promise for where local chefs and home cooks can turn to for quality produce. The innovative team has big plans that reflect a new generation of gourmands, with initiatives like agritourism on the agenda.

I can’t say enough how impressed I was by the first-ever kitchen tour organized

by Debra McInnis to raise money for the Naples Woman’s Club (page 106). Her positive energy and creativity were on overdrive as she hopped from home to home that day with the 300 ticket holders who signed on for what she jokingly called “her baby.” She spent months planning the event, and in the process she secured four gorgeous kitchens in Port Royal and four top Naples chefs to whip up delicacies for everyone there.

But enough talking. Time to dig in.

Martin Short, one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, has a career that spans television, films and Broadway, with plenty of acting, singing, writing and producing along the way. Known for his fearless comedic performances, Short created iconic personalities such as Saturday Night Live’s Ed Grimley, a triangle-playing nerd obsessed with Wheel of Fortune; Franck Eggelhoffer, the flamboyant event planner with a mysterious accent in the Father of the Bride movie series; and Jiminy Glick, a patronizing celebrity interviewer who knows very little about pop culture.

Recently Short has voiced several animated films, including the upcoming Dorothy of Oz as well as 2012’s Frankenweenie and Madagascar 3. As part of a nationwide tour, he is coming to the Philharmonic Center for the Arts April 9 to perform a one-man comedic show in which he’ll bring his zany alter egos to life. —Jennifer Pfaff n You’ve developed many well-known characters and starred in recognizable roles. Any favorites?

I don’t have a favorite. It sounds pretentious, but they become your kids. You’ve created them. You like them all. I usually will let people tell me what they like. Comedy is a very subjective animal. What one person might like, the other person might despise.

But that’s okay. n Can you tell us about Franck Eggelhoffer’s background and his accent? Where is he from?

I never determined that. I felt that he was born in Eastern Europe but he’d summered in France and he’d wintered in St. Barths and he’d been on yachts, and so his accent was so filled with pretention that at times he’d say, “Yes,” and at times he’d say, “Yah.” n What is your life motto?

To be happy. Everything happens to people, and you just have to figure out a way to still find happiness and joy in life, because it’s not a rehearsal. This is it.

Enter a brand new boutique in a quiet building a few blocks from the Waterside Shops, and you feel you’ve stepped into another world. “The architect we hired to take a look at our preliminary design said it was an explosion of pink,” says Kirsten Ferrara, a co-owner.

The pink may be toned down slightly in the finished product, but the shop is decidedly girly—and a breath of fresh air. Opened by Ferrara and her friend and business partner Heidi Farrugia, the two have used their discerning eye from years of being It Girls on the Naples social scene to cull a diverse collection of chic items that fit any price point. The biggest surprise, though, is how adorable and affordable most of the wares are. On our first visit alone, we picked up a sequined tote ($36) and pretty bottle of hand soap with a nautilus design ($15). Farrugia attributes the selection and pricing scheme to their desire to make luxury more accessible. “Why not buy three things instead of two?”

We also loved the iPhone cases ($15, cheeky; $200, crystal-studded), soft-as-can-be stuffed animals in the children’s section ($20), crocheted beach shorts ($130) and boho patterned resort dresses that Farrugia helped design ($350). A corner of the store is also dedicated to the resale of bags from the best names in fashion: Louis Vuitton, Prada and Judith Leiber, to name a few. And the icing on the cake is the Frosting Bar, where women—or significant others on the hunt for a special gift—can snag a seat and sift through diamond bracelets and necklaces (those prices max out in the $7,000 range).

But most important (and what some people may be equally surprised by), is how genuinely friendly the shop gals are. Stopping by the store gives new meaning to the term retail therapy.

“All I care about is that everyone leaves with a smile on their face,” Ferrara says. Farrugia beams and enthusiastically nods in approval. (1190 Pine Ridge Road, 239-919-3990)

Aisle Spy Qi Home (pronounced “Q.I.”), the luxe cashmere line that counts celebs blake lively and emily blunt among its fans, has landed in naples. it is the latest store in Mercato, and the company’s first outpost outside New York City. A buttery smooth eyeshade is on our wish list for summer travel, and we already scored a throw pillow for our living room couch. The Location’s the Thing Gulfshore Playhouse, a top regional theater troupe, makes its debut at the Phil.

The Norris Center in Cambier Park has become a haven for local culture vultures since Gulfshore Playhouse took up residency there in 2004. Founder and Producing Artistic Director Kristen Coury can be counted on to assemble Broadway-caliber casts to perform Tony Award-winning plays several times each season, and she’s making a splash this month. For the first time ever, one of the group’s works will be staged at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts. This is not to say Coury and company are abandoning their normal downtown home. Instead, with the April 5 to 21 run of Terrence McNally’s Master Class, an alternatively laugh-out-loud and introspective biopic of opera diva Maria Callas, Coury is excited for the singular opportunity to broaden her group’s reach and connect with a larger audience. After a long and continuing career as an independent musician and vocalist performing with artists like James Taylor, Phil Collins and Lyle Lovett, Arnold McCuller is flying solo again. He returns to Southwest Florida April 26 to headline a fundraising concert at the Phil for the locally based Trust for the Advancement of Responsible Artists (TARA), a foundation benefiting autism services and nonprofits here and elsewhere. McCuller’s newest blues album, Soon As I Get Paid, was released in 2011. With a background on Broadway, in films, and singing in world tours, McCuller is a busy man. NI listened up. —Melanie Hembree NI: What projects are you most proud of?

MCCULLER: I love the last two records I’ve done, but Soon As I Get Paid was really one 40 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

of my favorites because I got to work with James Taylor’s band. We recorded it over a four-day period, and it was mixed and mastered within six months. It was done quickly but with the finest musicians. I sang live for most of the tracks.

How did your involvment with TARA start?

I was one of the very first artists that TARA booked 17 years ago. I came with a trio—a keyboard player, a guitar player and myself. We did a small show at the Sugden Community Theatre. The following year, I did it again. Then TARA’s founder, Bob Goldman, started picking my brain about other artists I know of who might be interested in performing. I flooded him with names. We got Phoebe Snow and Karla Bonoff, and it started snowballing and building. Goldman

found his own artists, and then I got Ben Taylor and Brandi Carlile down for him.

These were all friends of mine that I could actually say, “Go to Naples and do this gig; you won’t regret it.”

What does philanthropy mean to you?

The main thing is that it means taking care of what we own or what we are custodians over. Taking care of the planet, of one another and the people who can’t take care of themselves. Being available to give back whenever you can. Certainly work calls, but if there is anything I can do during downtime that might be beneficial to someone else, I am happy to do it.

Planet Earth, We Salute You One of the benefits of the Naples lifestyle is how green it is, literally and figuratively. To Honor Earth Day (April 22), here are some inspiring local developments.

New and Natural After sporadic closures for renovation since 2010, including a complete shutdown, the Conservancy of Southwest Florida’s Nature Center (conservancy.org)—located on 21 acres next to the Naples Zoo with a new street leading to it off Goodlette-Frank Road (you could likely walk between the two)—gets another lease on life with a grand opening festival April 20-21.

“The center was designed to communicate the beauty of Southwest Florida’s environment, what makes it so important, and the work conducted by our group to protect water, land and wildlife,” says Andrew McElwaine, Conservancy president. “We’re creating an experience where people are inspired to take action to preserve what surrounds us for future generations.”

All buildings now meet LEED standards. Three are brand new, such as the von Arx Wildlife Hospital, where people can see baby animals in the nursery. Three preexisting buildings were given a facelift; the Dalton Discovery Center (pictured) gained a saltwater touch tank and a young sea turtle exhibit.

The festivities promise a wild agenda, with National Geographic’s Sylvia Earle speaking, plus boat rides down the Gordon River, games, crafts, musical performances and film screenings. Some parts of the center have been open to the public, but this marks the official ribbon-cutting. —Mina Kang

“I wanted to do something ‘green,’ but really I was hoping to find a way to preserve the sentimental value,” she says.

“Most are gifts commemorating an event or are inherited.”

The process starts with a meeting at her studio where Jaron says she wants it to feel more like girlfriends connecting over a glass of wine rather than a sales push.

In roughly an hour, she speaks with you about the stories behind the pieces and develops a new custom design that reworks the originals. Ever since environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas crusaded for the protection of our River of Grass, millions of others have rightly followed suit. EYE FOR DESIGN Thom Filicia has a knack for knowing what people want when it comes to the home. It has been 10 years since he catapulted to fame as the decor expert on Bravo’s Queer Eye, a series that won him an Emmy Award. And while we miss the Fab Five and their “make-betters,” we dig what Filicia has been up to of late. When not at work on projects for the interior design firm bearing his name, he writes books and creates furniture. Located at Goodlette-Frank Road and U.S. 41, Bayfront Place was an early entry in the residential-commercial development arena. The European-style buildings cast a colorful reflection on the waters of the Gordon River and Naples Bay, housing shops, restaurants and other businesses below the 156 luxury condos. The brick-lined paths and festive fountains jazz up the public piazza, where myriad events unfold. (bayfrontnaples.com)

Party City The location lends itself to gatherings. Mike Randall of McQuaid Marketing is a major force behind some up-and-coming events (as well as a resident), and is working on additional family-friendly soirees. Since the first Rockin’ on the Bay in January, the outdoor live music fest has attracted happy concertgoers of every age, with themes ranging from Jimmy Buffett to disco fever. Randall’s goal is to hold it monthly on every first Saturday. And approval pending, Randall will bring the inaugural McQuaid Rib Burn-Off, a rib competition and festival May 25-27 across the street to Regency Park. It will feature kids’ activities, live music, visits by NFL alumni and, to honor Memorial Day, it will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. (Stay tuned!)

If you’re a sushi purist, you may not instantly warm to the idea of cooked lobster finding its way between seaweed and rice. But one bite of the baked lobster roll at the new seafood restaurant FISH (239-263-3474) in the Village on Venetian Bay, and you’ll see why we’re in love with it: The tender meat, piled high, has a nice caramelized coating from a miso-chive aioli that’s added before it is popped in the oven. The salty sweetness of the sauce makes this dish one of the best we’ve tasted all year, and we like that there is almost nothing traditional about it—slivers of romaine are mixed into the final assembly, and a trio of sauces decorate the plate and give flavor (besides the aioli there’s wasabi mayo and spicy mayo).

Refresh’s roast beef sandwich, Health Nut smoothie and edamame salad.

A heavy midday meal can leave you searching for a place to rest your head. Prevent that pillow talk by fueling up at Refresh (239-592-4166), a cute quick-serve café dishing up healthy and delicious hits in the Shoppes at Vanderbilt. Two local guys opened it last year, and their menu is stocked with smoothies, salads and sandwiches using veggies and fruit grown in South Florida, plus hormone-free chicken and wild-caught salmon (the better-for-you option). We never tire of the edamame salad; the beans combine well with roasted corn and chickpeas, and are punctuated with a touch of sweetness from dried cranberries. The Heath Nut, fast becoming our preferred afternoon beverage, is a crisp blend of bananas, blueberries and yogurt. Sipping it satisfies any sweet tooth sans guilt, and the owners’ choice to serve it all in eco-friendly packaging makes us feel even better. —Jenna Choate

Sweeten the Deal Pour these wines to savor dessert in a glass.

Back in the days before refrigeration, sweet wine reigned supreme. The high sugar levels functioned as a preservative, a means of extending the life of the wine beyond the six to 12 months common at the time. And while centuries ago these beverages were reserved for aristocrats and tables of the rich because people’s palates preferred them, today the opposite is true—dry wines tend to rule.

Even so, in modern times oenophiles thoroughly embrace and enjoy these sweet sips, which can be priced all the way from affordable to stratospheric. The easiest and least costly dessert wines to make are

those in which fermentation is stopped early. The process creates residual sugar— a portion of sugar not converted to alcohol.

The most popular examples include Ports, as well as Muscats produced in the South of France. In both of these types, the wines are fortified, meaning neutral spirits have been added to stop the fermentation and raise the levels of sugar and alcohol.

Another method relies on cold weather to increase the sugar levels in grapes.

German winemakers in particular take full advantage of this fact to elevate the production of Eiswein (ice wine) to a fine art.

To make this uncommon and expensive elixir, fruit is literally left to freeze on the vines, and is sometimes harvested as late as December. Canadian ice wine, pioneered by wineries such as Inniskillin, is a less pricey, yet high-quality and delicious alternative to the German version.

The most famous sweet wines are produced as a result of Botrytis cinerea, or “noble rot.” This benevolent fungus attacks grapes from the outside and dehydrates them, raising the sugar level while leaving the acidity intact. White grapes with thin skins, such as Sémillon and Riesling, are the main targets.

These wines are difficult to make, since the fungus only appears under specific weather

conditions, and the fruit must be harvested by hand, sometimes one berry at a time.

However, results can be glorious: Wines of the Quarts de Chaume in the Loire Valley made from Chenin Blanc and the renowned late-harvest Rieslings of Germany’s Mosel region are pure, honeyed gold.

The best known botrytis-affected wine is the spectacular Sauternes. Produced in the southern Graves region of Bordeaux where the maritime climate frequently yields conditions favorable for noble rot, Sauternes generally is composed of a blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes. Along with the red wines of the Médoc, the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes were ranked in France’s official Classification of 1855. These two sweet varietals were broken into First and Sec-

ond Growths. Just one property stood out as a Superior First Growth: the peerless Château d’Yquem.

The singular estate has been making wine since the early eighteenth century. It was owned for more than 200 years by the Lur-Saluces family, and then purchased in 1996 by LVMH Moët Hennessy-Louis Vuitton. An 80/20 blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc, the magical liquid is both highly sought-after and extremely expensive. Bottles from the best recent vintages, such as the 2001, have commanded prices in the neighborhood of $1,000. Anyone with very deep pockets might want to pick up a bottle of the 1811 for $120,000.

Those who believe the only suitable pairings for Sauternes are foie gras and strong cheeses need to broaden their horizons and consider some unexpectedly happy cou-

ples. On its website Château d’Yquem plays matchmaker, hitching its wine with oysters and mussels (favorites of Balzac and Dumas, respectively), lobster, poultry, game and desserts like poached pears and apple tart.

Sommeliers have long agonized over how to follow Sauternes when it is served early in a meal with foie gras. To solve the dilemma, Yquem suggests serving consommé immediately afterward to refresh the palate.

Often overlooked on the Southeast Asia tourist trail, Malaysia shines as the continent’s cultural kaleidoscope, where disparate flavors, trends and customs create a single nation. Though the country is divided ethnically and politically among its diverse Malay, Chinese and Indian populations, for the average visitor, Malaysia is a cultural wonderland, flaunting a global showcase of opulence, bizarre foods, serene landscapes and man-made marvels.

Most recognize the capital, Kuala Lumpur, called “KL” by the locals, from the 1999 film Entrapment with Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The world’s tallest building then, the Petronas Twin Towers (petronastwintowers.com.my),

soaring 1,500 feet towards the heavens, formed the backdrop for the characters’ final heist. Even though the dual structure lost its title as the planet’s tallest edifice in 2004 to a Taiwanese skyscraper, it’s still one of Kuala Lumpur’s most jaw-dropping attractions and just the starting point of a city filled with the unexpected.

An entire village dedicated to business and leisure envelops the Petronas towers. Kuala Lumpur City Centre, or KLCC (klcc.com.my), encompasses parks, recreation centers, and the mother of all shopping havens. Every upscale store imaginable spreads over

three connecting megamalls with an entire floor of Asian restaurants and two floors of food courts.

Visitors quickly realize that shopping and eating are Malaysia’s two national pastimes. The city’s premier hotel, the Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur (mandarinoriental.com/kualalumpur) is in the center of the KLCC neighborhood.

The property offers instant immersion into the finest ingredients of the KL melting pot. It may not have the variety of the famed hawker stalls of Jalan Alor, KL’s superlative street-food market, but you may well find your plate filled with dishes like pineapple fritters,

One could endlessly bask in the Mandarin Oriental’s luxury, but it’s worth spending days exploring the wider environs. With postcard-perfect vistas, Meredeka Square faces the lavish Sultan Abdul Samad Building, also known as the Big Ben of KL for its grand clock tower. The highly manicured Lake Gardens area is home to the National Butterfly Park (once the largest in the world); Deer, Orchid, Hibiscus and Bird parks; and a National Planetarium. As you amble through the Lake Gardens, prepare to see curious monkeys by the

roadside, in trees and on fences. Batu Caves, a sacred Hindu shrine, is another must-see. You’ll be out of breath after the 272 steps to the cave entrance, but soon you’ll succumb to the overpowering nature of the shrine and the breathtaking views.

Nature lovers will also want to head to Firefly Park Resort (fireflypark.com) in Kuala Selangor, which offers night trips down the Selangor River to watch masses of fireflies light up the entire sky. Think of it as aurora borealis meets entomology rather than the confluence of mismatched ideas—insects with luxury travel. u

Speed of Light The 2013 Range Rover adds luxury and sheds 700 pounds to create the finest 4x4 by far.

No longer can the abbreviation “SUV” be associated with that icon of British style and elegance, the Range Rover. Sport utility vehicle? You obviously haven’t laid eyes on the all-new version.

There’s nothing even remotely utilitarian about this fourthgeneration Range Rover—which is why I’m officially changing its moniker from “SUV” to “SLV,” as in “Super Luxury Vehicle.”

To prove my point, enjoy a moment of comfort and hedonistic relaxation in the reconfigured, redesigned rear cabin of the 2013 Range Rover Autobiography.

Getting in and out is so much easier now thanks to bigger, barngate-wide door openings, along with an “Access” ride height mode for the standard air suspension that lowers the car by two inches.

You can leave the step ladders in the garage.

Lengthening the car’s wheelbase also has added 4.7 inches of stretch-out legroom in the back, transforming it into the promnight Town Car of SUVs. Then there are the seats. Opt for the Executive Class package and you get individual pews the size of Barcaloungers. At the touch of a button, they can recline, give you a back massage only a Swedish Helga can perform, heat you up or cool you down. Once ensconced, you’ll never want to leave.

And why would you when 8-inch high-res video screens in the back play your favorite movies? When cranked up, the 29 speakers in the optional 1,700-watt Meridian Signature Reference audio system can make your ears bleed. Enya has never sounded so mystical.

If you can pry yourself out of the back and slide behind the wheel, the driving experience will change the way you think about full-size 4x4s. Conjure up an image of a Rolls-Royce on stilts—this is it. Maybe that’s why they share those “RR” initials.

The biggest change here is weight. For this all-new model, the Land Rover folks made the bold decision to switch from steel to aluminum for the entire body structure. Compared to the previous model, this new Range Rover is a whopping 700 pounds lighter. That’s huge. It’s like extracting two Warren Sapps from the back seat.

Less weight means zippier acceleration, nimbler handling and better fuel economy, all of which this new Range Rover achieves with aplomb. Compared to the previous model, this one feels like there’s Red Bull in the fuel tank.

That’s certainly the case when driving this Autobiography model, with its standard 510-horsepower and supercharged V-8 under the hood, coupled with a rapid-shifting 8-speed automatic.

With less metal to move, this four-wheel-drive rocket ship can streak from standstill to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds. That’s crazy fast. And with a stump-pulling 461 pound-feet of muscley torque at your disposal, the mid-range thrust for fast, safe passing is simply breathtaking.

A

nyone passing by the beachside home of Michael DeGroote Sr. and Gillian Campbell on November 10 knew something important was going on. Massive trucks, security cars and golf carts were causing the normal Port Royal traffic to slow to a crawl, and people craned their necks to catch sight of what could possibly be unfolding.

The party—undoubtedly the most talked about soiree this season—was one for the history books. Of course there were the obvious awe factors defining it, starting with the lavishly decorated backyard tent the size of a football field right beside the Gulf. Entertainment from singer LeAnn Rimes and up-and-coming British vocal group Blake, plus a heavenly five-course sit-down meal prepared by Tom Colicchio (a James Beard Award winner and head judge of the lauded cooking competition series Top Chef) established the level of gravitas the night carried before the festivities even got under way.

But the reason prompting DeGroote and Campbell, along with Bob and Joan Clifford, their co-hosts that evening, to plan such an extravaganza for 152 friends was what took the party from good to great.

As trustees of the Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF)—the nonprofit that raises money to help local underprivileged children by means of its annual three-day weekend of fun, the Naples Winter Wine Festival (NWWF) with its capstone live auction—the Cliffords, who chaired the festival in 2012, sought to put together an auction item that would simply be irresistible for people to pass up, such as a star-studded party. And DeGroote, an honorary

trustee for his dedicated service to the foundation, had another thing on his mind. He could see a milestone for the group was within grasp at that festival, and he wanted to do something to help ensure and also celebrate it. “It was Michael’s dream to provide a party to honor the festival raising more than $100 million for Collier County children since its inception. The very first party ever held for the NCEF and NWWF was at this home 11 years ago,” Campbell says.

DeGroote adds, “I like a challenge, and I am so proud of what the NCEF has done.”

Before long DeGroote, Campbell and the Cliffords were planning the now-famous Auction Lot 14, a modified Dutch auction. Each festival attendee last year was handed a golden ticket that listed the details for the night and what donation amounts would buy (the higher your bid, the closer to the stage you’d be and the more raffle tickets you’d get—but more on those later).

Needless to say, Lot 14 was a smashing success. In the end 152 friends turned in their golden tickets for a night none of them will ever forget. The party was the highest-grossing auction item that year, raking in $1.2 million alone, and the NWWF made $12.2 million and brought the lifetime donation total to $106 million.

Naturally, based on the group’s collective bacchanal savoir faire (they are, after all, trustees and patrons of the world’s largest philanthropic wine festival), the fete in the DeGroote yard this past

No stranger to our town, Colicchio has been coming here since the Naples Winter Wine Festival’s debut more than a decade ago. He was honored to be back cooking for a cause. “I could give my time every day of the week—and I often do. It’s hard to say no,” he says. Another cause near and dear to him is helping raise awareness about hunger in the United States. His wife, Lori Silverbush, co-directed and produced a documentary with him, A Place at the Table, that is in theaters and on iTunes now. Says Colicchio, “Food insecurity is a systemic issue. I would love to see a day when we wouldn’t need to host fundraisers.”

The organizers of the party knew the surefire way to get as many of their friends to come was to give them something out of the ordinary.

Back-to-back private concerts post-dinner held much allure and delivered beyond what they expected.

LeAnn Rimes arrived early that weekend to tour local charities receiving NCEF funds, like the Naples Equestrian Challenge (NEC).

Philanthropy has always been important to her, and of her stop at NEC, she says, “It was great to go and meet the kids today. It was very intimate, and they were so sweet!” Another thing she has been up to and is thrilled about is her latest album, Spitfire, being released this month. Rimes, who became a household name at the tender age of 14 when she won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist, confessed the recording experience was cathartic. “This is my most personal album yet. It’s a lot about my life, my friends,” she says. ”I feel like I’m starting over with this record. I’ve embraced my past, and I’m moving on to the future with something new.”

Blake, first-time visitors to the Paradise Coast, also have a new album out, Start Over (a March release in the United Kingdom), and they couldn’t get enough of our town. Famous in their native Britain, the guys—now a trio since member Jules Knight left in January to join the cast of a BBC show—hope to tour the United States in the coming year. Of this particular gig, member Humphrey Berney says, “We’ve performed at a lot of private events and have even sung for the queen, and I can honestly say this was amazing. We’ve never sound checked with dolphins before. A whole school of them were in the waves just beyond the tent. We could easily get used to that.”

The country pop star rocked the house. Within minutes of crooning her hit songs, the entire crowd was up on the dance floor—and didn’t stop moving until she left the stage.

November featured the best of the best vintages. Wines were paired and poured with chef Colicchio’s five sit-down courses, such as the exclusive 2008 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Vosne-Romanée with the short ribs. An enormous tasting table was set up in the back of the tent as well. All bottles for the table were donated by past festival vintners (winemakers who provide vino for the weekend’s festivities), and Lamar Cheatham, hotel sommelier for The RitzCarlton, Naples, presided over the wine service.

The pairings were set in advance, but Cheatham didn’t know what was being delivered for the tasting table until that morning. When the refrigerated truck arrived, he surveyed its precious cargo. “For a wine geek like myself, opening those boxes felt like Christmas,” he says. “No, it was better than Christmas!”

Meanwhile Colicchio—the author of three cookbooks and holder of an Emmy and five James Beard Awards—and the five members of

his team from New York City were nothing short of spectacular in the kitchen. They prepared a mix of old favorites and innovative new dishes, with several from Colicchio & Sons, one of his latest restaurants. The hamachi is currently on its menu, and Colicchio says he hopes to soon add the agnolotti. “This is the first time I’ve served it, and I wanted to do a dish with luxury items like those truffles,” he says. Guests unanimously agreed it was one they could order again and again, and they also oohed and aahed over the rest.

On the heels of dinner, the handsome men of Blake took the stage, wowing the crowd with their booming vocals. During a rendition of Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes’ “Up Where We Belong,” people swayed in their seats, and in a stirring display of emotion, one man hoisted his wife high in the air for everyone to see. Credit for signing the charming Brits—who hung out after their act finished with guests like Wanda Zaiser (pictured)—goes to Campbell.

She had been at a benefit in London where they performed, and she bid on a set of concert tickets that same day thinking they could be perfect for her own party. “Michael and I and a group of friends went to see them in Bermuda, and that sealed the deal. We were so impressed with their show,” she says.

Kicking things up a notch, Rimes entered the tent and the crowd’s energy exploded. The country pop star rocked the house. Within minutes of crooning her hit songs—halfway through the second song exactly—the entire crowd was up on the dance floor and didn’t stop moving until she left the stage. She belted out numbers from her new album, including the title single Spitfire, and everyone went wild when she gave them her chart-topper Can’t Fight the Moonlight. Part of why Rimes was approached to perform was because she’s the Cliffords’ favorite singer. Rimes says, “I love the fact that there are real fans here.”

Circling back to the root cause of what brought the friends together that night, when the Cliffords, Campbell and DeGroote were organizing the fete before the 2012 auction, they wanted to add in an element of fun and philanthropy. They approached the local Provident Jewelry about partnering with Buccellati (a centuries-old Italian jewelry house known for its luxurious, handcrafted pieces). Buccellati agreed to donate a one-of-a-kind cuff to raffle at the party, and the owners of both companies set up a boutique under the tent to sell their exquisite gems.

Ten percent of the proceeds went back to the NCEF. “We wanted to maintain the focus on the children whom we are serving,” Bob Clifford remarks. “Since 2001, we have helped more than 150,000 kids.”

Capping the festivities, Clifford and Rimes announced the winners, NCEF trustees Ann and Bill Bain. Guests lingered to continue their revelry. No one wanted the night to end. Festival patron Shelly Stayer chatted and reflected with Linda Malone, co-chair of the 2014 NWWF. Says Stayer, “This was a Hollywood-style party in Naples. A

trip to the rolling fields surrounding the town of Ave Maria may reveal an unexpected sight: a pretty, petite brunette riding high on a tractor against the green landscape of the recently christened Collier Family Farms (CFF).

More often, though, one is likely to spot Lara Collier, the farm’s assistant manager and a descendant of county founder Barron Gift Collier Sr., beneath the wooden eaves of the organic farm’s stand, manning tables piled with emerald-colored kale and bell peppers, plump purple and white eggplants and smooth, yellow summer squash.

Her great-grandfather, who first arrived in Southwest Florida in 1911, developed a passion for the area and drove its development. Today the company he founded encompasses a broad range of business ventures, including agriculture. The county’s namesake held a deep respect for the environment, and that interest has been passed down through generations. So it seems natural that the latest addition to the Barron Collier Companies agriculture operations, Collier Family Farms, focuses on sustainability—and involves family. The division’s co-president is Lara’s cousin, Katie Sproul.

According to Lara, the genesis for CFF came from her father, Barron Collier III, who began talking about starting a U-Pick place on their land about five years ago.

“I did an internship with the Ag Division early last year and that’s when we put some numbers together. And I mentioned organic, so we decided to go that route,” says Lara, a 2011 graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University with a degree in Environmental Science & Biology.

In addition to Lara Collier, the CFF team includes Bob Newsome, Barron Collier’s agribusiness manager, and Elvie Engle, farm manager. “He knows how to grow just about anything,” Collier says.

Engle has a 40-year history in agriculture and worked with Barron Collier Companies in the ’90s. The company lured him back last September with the irresistible challenge of starting up a farm that would use only certified organic methods. “Florida’s

conventional growing of tomatoes and vegetables hasn’t been working well in the last two or three years; there’s too much competition from Mexico,” he says.

Technically, the farm began as a transition organic business (meaning seeds and inputs are all organic, but USDA Organic certification is pending) growing peppers, squash, kale, leafy vegetables, broccoli, oregano and eggplant along with Engle’s favorite, tomatoes. This month, he expects they will have watermelons, strawberries and more herbs.

Florida commercial farms don’t grow much in summer because of the heat, but Engle says, “I’m going to try to grow squash and some other things, and just see what I can grow, because it’s very challenging. To keep the stand going over the summer, we’ll have to buy some things from up north.”

All of it will all be organic, though. In February, CFF underwent its inspection by Quality Certification Services, or QCS, to NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2013 103

qualify for USDA certification (indicating food or other agricultural products have been “produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity”). Engle figures it will be official by June 1.

There are other clear-cut environmental advantages when fruits and veggies are grown locally and organically. Eliminating long-distance transportation lowers fossilfuel emissions, as well as cuts the time to get fresh produce into our kitchens.

Lara Collier has a keen interest in sustainability. In school, she was involved with the American Water Research Association Club, “a water club for nerds,” as she puts it, and did an internship with CREW Land & Water Trust. Both experiences taught her how practices used in organic farming help conserve soil and water and cut pollution. For instance, CFF covers a total of 45 acres, but it is not all farmed at the same time. “We’re probably at about 10 to 15 acres a year, and that will give us a two- to threeyear rotation on the land,” Engle notes.

He also is using some alternative growing methods, like a vertical system that ups production using less space and water.

The official opening at Ave Maria was in January. Besides buying goods at the stand, folks have been flocking to the fields so their kids can pick tomatoes, peppers and squash and learn about the origins of food. The team is excited to have visitors.

A pilot Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program has been under way, with 70 members paying in advance for a weekly delivery of local organic fruits and vegetables. Because summer growing in Florida is limited, this program will start up again sometime in the fall, with the next crops.

Under another initiative, the farm will supply produce to local clubs’ kitchens, like the Estuary, and prominent chefs.

Brian Roland is one of the first to have signed on. He is the former executive chef at M Waterfront Grille, and now operates his own venture, Crave Culinaire, a concierge service providing bespoke dinners, parties and other food-related endeavors. He’s cooking up a plan with CFF to collaborate on specialty crops, such as baby candy-cane beets and edible flowers, that the farm will plant and deliver to him and other interested chefs. Roland is already a regular recipient of the farm’s goods, creating beautiful dishes with the colorful vegetables and fruits, like the one he made for us (pictured, opposite).

With a strong local focus, Collier Family Farms offers several community-oriented events and outreach projects, too. “We are educating local schoolchildren about the importance of organic farming and knowing where their food comes from,” says Collier. The farm also donates to area food banks, and it conducts workshops to teach the public how to grow organic plants, along with hosting cooking demos. “We usually have these when we have events at

Ave Maria,” she says. CFF reflects a growing national trend towards agritourism, and is one of the first Collier County projects attracting local and out-of-area visitors.

The farm has even more ideas in the mix. “We’re going to put up some solar panels, and we hope to get a wind turbine and a rain barrel,” Collier says. “And we’re looking into grass-fed beef and free-range chickens,” possibly in the next crop year.

It seems she has found her life’s purpose.

“It’s amazing,” she says. “I love being outdoors and on the farm when the sun rises and when it sets.” Her great-grandfather would surely approve. u NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2013 105

W

hether you consider yourself the crème de la crème of home chefs, a design-savvy gourmand or someone who simply appreciates tasty food and inviting spaces, the kitchen reveals much of a home’s appeal. It’s where we eat, talk and congregate, day in and day out.

In January, the Naples Woman’s Club organized an event that granted connoisseurs an exclusive treat: to explore four Port Royal and Aqualane Shores home kitchens and be entertained every step of the way. The new tour was created by club member Debra McInnis and was complete with culinary delights from downtown chefs, boutique shopping, musicians, gorgeous floral displays, luxury motor coaches and more.

It was intended to highlight what McInnis describes as “the exquisite homes we have here in our lovely city” and serve as a fundraiser for the club, which celebrated its eightieth anniversary last year and has a long-standing commitment to philanthropy. In

addition to putting money towards the local scholarships it awards annually, proceeds were donated to the Naples Historical Society and Baby Basics, a Collier County nonprofit that provides diapers to lowincome working families.

Modeling the tour off a similar fundraiser she organized in her native Ohio, McInnis believes she has a hit on her hands. The 300 tickets for this year’s inaugural tour sold out months in advance, and the attendees deemed it a resounding success.

The Hot Spot: Kitchen No. 1 A kitchen is one place where you’d expect to

encounter a compelling contrast of fire and ice. This Fourth Street South home dazzled guests with a sleek, well-appointed kitchen that didn’t spare the sizzle and gave Truluck’s chef David Nelson a perfect place to prepare one of his signature dishes: shrimp with heirloom grits—that has a touch of sweetness from a maple syrup and apple cider reduction.

Inspired by the homeowners’ love of handcrafted glass and designed with a nod to three of their favorite hotels—Las Vegas’ Bellagio, Atlantic City’s Borgata and the Bahamas’ Atlantis—this home’s decor fuses a feeling of air, fire and water. In the kitchen, this means adding such toasty touches as ochre-hued Italian glass

pendant lamps purchased at the Borgata (left) and a radiant red mosaic tile wall. Commercial-grade appliances cool things off with their stainless steel finish, and rich African sapele woodwork ties it all together in a way that is lush yet refined. Throughout the home, hand-blown glass sculptures—including several by a onetime protégé of famed sculptor Dale Chihuly—infuse color and drama.

Reflecting the homeowners’ passion for entertaining, the open kitchen flows into the other living areas, including a nearby bar area and the bi-level outdoor living space. Once again, the owners have brought their fondness for colored glass and the tension among air, fire and water into the decor. The bar’s glass top changes colors from lights underneath, and a fire pit flanks the pool area.

Tour guest Therese O’Brien definitely caught the fever for this kitchen.

“It’s just absolutely spectacular. What they’ve done with glass and mosaic tile is beyond my wildest dreams,” she says.

A Chef’s Choice: Kitchen No. 2 Few kitchens combined form and function as finely as this Gin Lane stop. Here, guests sampled blackened shrimp with a coconut Key lime sauce, a specialty of Vergina chef Leonardo Garcia.

Designed in a Mediterranean style, the home’s kitchen features not one but two granite countertop islands with multiple sinks. These practical features caught Garcia’s attention, as he and his culinary team found the space suitable to prepare the majority of their shrimp dish onsite. The layout of the kitchen and number of appliances made cooking for as many as 100 dinner guests quite manageable, the chef says.

Guests Kathy Darcy, Bettina McKee and Pat Finnen found the tour was indeed providing more surprises than they anticipated. The friends expected that the tour would be strictly limited to one area, but instead, they were able to see more of each home’s main living areas, which proved a treat. They also enjoyed the live music while strolling.

“I think it’s a great way to showcase the local talent,” Finnen notes.

This well-appointed Galleon Drive kitchen was designed with an attentive eye, boasting extensive storage and numerous everyday conveniences, such as two Miele dishwashers. The kitchen also features decorative flourishes that demonstrate the owner’s love of detail, such as custom carved cabinetry and an oven hood with ornately painted tiles and an attractive mural.

Here, Sea Salt chef Jason Goddard granted tour guests a wealth of epicurean options. Visitors sampled four different foods, including Sea Salt’s New Vision Caesar, a Caesar salad wrapped in edamame paper and topped with tomato “caviar,” delicate tiny spheres created through molecular gastronomy.

Another crowd pleaser was a tartare with crab and black truffles on a sesame rice cracker. Such variety is representative of what Sea Salt offers, according to Goddard: “We always vary the menu, so it’s everchanging, whatever’s fresh and in season, whatever’s hot at the moment.”

Change was also the buzzword of the tour. While Laura Lou Roth played the harp at this home, violinists entertained at others. Shopping at each stop included items as diverse as Elaine Murphy’s handcrafted “Art to Wear” jewelry, handbags from local

apparel boutique Kay’s on the Beach, unique home wares from Monogram Goods (a pop-up store in Naples’ Garden District) and colorful accessories from Ooh La La! Jewels Du Jour.

Tour guests Marianna Mitchell and Jan Eby liked everything they saw.

“You get to have it all,” Mitchell says. “Food, shopping, houses. And friends.”

A culinary team from Ridgway Bar & Grill, including chef Tony Ridgway and Tony’s Off Third pastry chef Tara Lumley, used the kitchen to prepare a variety of goodies for tour guests, including a raspberry chocolate ganache cake with a Grand Marnier sauce.

cause, as McInnis wanted the experience to be an unforgettable afternoon for everyone involved while keeping the raison d’être clearly in sight. Jean Ann Lynch, president of Baby Basics, one of the tour’s beneficiaries, praised the event. Her group currently serves 315 local babies; that totals an estimated 1,300 family members receiving support. “These families work very hard to provide the best for their children,” Lynch says.

McInnis is already organizing next year’s event, scheduled for January 22. She’s convinced the secret ingredient to the tour’s success is surprise. “People love variety,” McInnis says. “It’s the spice of life. And the excitement of wondering, ‘What’s next?’” u

A girls’ weekend unveils the hidden beauty of Southwest Florida—and the beauty of connecting with others and yourself. BY KAT SMITH

Last spring, a group of intrepid, open-minded women gathered at the Hotel Escalante in Old Naples for the Wellfit Institute’s​ Wellness on the Water Retreat, a four-day sojourn of bonding, sharing and self-reflection through activities such as poolside power yoga, communal meals, paddle-boarding on the Gulf and pottery-making. Designed by Wellfit owner Jill Wheeler and Memmy Staber, the goals of the weekend included living in the moment, connecting with other women and most important, appreciating a sense of place.

The retreat, a big success, will be repeated May 2-5 at The Escalante, which recently opend a new restaurant, Veranda E. The itinerary includes meditation, healthy and fresh meals, outdoor exploring and fitness. Once again, a day trip to the ranch studio of local master potter Rinny Ryan in the nearby countryside will clear the clutter of everyday mindsets and spark creativity.

“There’s a kind of sense of Florida that I wanted to share through an authentic dinner and the quiet oasis of The Escalante,” Wheeler says about the inaugural retreat. “And to give an earthy, creative 124 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

opportunity to explore the arts personally, not just observe, and to appreciate others’ art. It was a theme of unique Florida that I wanted to interweave throughout the experience,” she adds.

Last year, each attendee left feeling relaxed, joyful and inspired to carry forward the intent to live with purpose. Even though the retreat lasted for just a long weekend, it was remarkable how each woman was comfortable discussing the details of her life, as well as trying new things, like practicing yoga floating on a paddleboard. Foremost, it was a fun adventure.

Taking a purposeful break from daily routines is key to plugging into your own thoughts and feelings. Sharing the beauty of nature, imagination and camaraderie with interesting, dynamic women is a moving experience and makes Wellness on the Water a rare treat for the mind and body.

“The main thing is that this is an opportunity for locals to see a different part of Naples, as well as invite family or friends. It’s right around Mother’s Day, and it’s a great gift to mothers or wives,” Wheeler says. “And you really do see sides of Naples you wouldn’t typically see.” (wellfitinstitute.com)

Doctors Within Our Borders

Collier County is famous for philanthropy, and the medical community’s Physician Led Access Network (PLAN) has embodied that spirit for the past decade, giving the gift of health care to those who need it. By Mina Kang Naples may be one of the wealthiest corners of the country, but not everyone here grows up eating from a silver spoon. With dread-inducing health insurance costs rising and the flat-out lack of insurance these days, the quest for proper medical care for some can feel like a marathon that never ends.

Fortunately, local leaders have taken up the challenge to restore hope, and this year marks the tenth anniversary of the P ​ hysician Led Access Network (PLAN), a volunteer corps of doctors providing free care to the uninsured.

Back in 2003 at the height of the South Florida economic boom, the Collier County Medical Society sought to bring quality health care to the broader community, and Collier We Care (PLAN’s former name) was born. It started with 36 volunteer specialists and quickly welcomed 200 more volunteers over the next three years. In the summer of 2004, it celebrated its new status as an officially incorporated nonprofit, and in 2005 it rebranded itself as PLAN. Over the years—especially during the tough times when the housing market hit rock bottom—PLAN has proved essential. Through donated medical services including office visits, labs, radiology tests and chemotherapy, PLAN now cares for roughly 500 patients every year. Its doctors treat cancer, broken limbs, troubled vision and more.

Space and time at facilities, such as SWICFT Institute and Naples Day Surgery, are given as well with no strings attached.

Humbled by its status as a smaller nonprofit, PLAN is grateful for and thrives on the vast supply of goodwill.

“We spend approximately $120,000 per year but deliver an amazing $2 million in services due to the generosity of the doctors and health-care institutions,” says Michelle Jay, PLAN’s program manager.

After a decade of steady growth, members such as Dr. Rolando Rivera, Collier County Medical Society’s president, are proud of what they’ve done and look forward to the future. “PLAN has created a safety net, bringing care to many patients who had lost hope. I am glad to be a part of this invaluable program.”

History Matters The Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida (above) carries a serious mission: to promote respect and understanding by teaching the history and lessons of the Holocaust. The museum grew from an exhibit created by middle school students and teachers studying the catastrophic event. Today it houses more than 1,000 World War II and Holocaust artifacts and photographs, and it conducts numerous educational programs for local students.

The institution will honor three individuals who embody its values and have made a positive impact on our community and the world at large during its annual fundraising event, Triumph 2013: Lives of Valor, April 7 at Naples Luxury Imports. The honorees, each one a Holocaust survivor, include Major General Sidney Shachnow (retired), a former commander of the U.S. Special Forces; Ann R. He is a successful attorney running one of the state’s most recognized criminal law practices, but Yale Freeman also has another remarkable pursuit—volunteerism. “Although my wife, Susan, and I support numerous charities through financial contributions, my M.O. is to focus on a specific cause I believe in and make a long-term commitment of time,” he says.

Freeman sat on the board of the Harry Chapin Food Bank for 10 years, serving as president for half his tenure. He even took a yearlong sabbatical in 2002 and dedicated 100 percent of his time to the food bank. Projects completed include an infrastructure reorganization and Kids Café, which provides food to children in afterschool programs. Freeman participated as well in forming its Alliance for Community Response that initiated plans for a new storage and distribution facility. “I’m a lawyer by profession, but a food banker at heart,” he says.

Also, Freeman is president of Temple Shalom and active in Legal Aid Service of Collier County and the Collier County Women’s Bar Association. Legal Aid recently announced he will receive the Lawyer of the Year award at the Barrister’s Bash late this month.

After Susan’s 2010 breast cancer diagnosis, he created Lawyers v. Breast Cancer, a campaign to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society, which led to Lawyers v., a soonto-be nonprofit that facilitates lawyer-based associations acting to support causes.

Philanthropy is undoubtedly a family affair.

For two years, Susan chaired the public relations committee of the Naples’ American Cancer Society walk, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Son Andrew works for a nonprofit agency that brings the arts to public schools in New Orleans. Daughter Allison lives in Naples and is on the staff of the American Cancer Society.
