“Almost every day here is fun; today has been more fun than most.” That’s what one of the members of our team said about the day we finalized the cover for the sixtieth anniversary issue of Palm Beach Illustrated. He was absolutely correct. It was a terrific day.

Each month, the Operating Committee (our six department heads) and members of the creative team of our two flagship monthlies—Palm Beach Illustrated and Naples Illustrated—meet via videoconference to look at options for the upcoming covers. They offer opinions, argue for favorites and try to guess what will appeal to our subscribers or will jump off newsstands.

“Guess” is the operative word. While we view our covers as pieces of art, correctly picking what will appeal, what will sell, is certainly more guesswork than art, and it definitely is not science. Any veteran of this business will tell you the covers that create the most buzz, or sell the most magazines, often are a surprise. Endless research, industry analysts and dozens of “cover doctors” all lead to the same conclusion for the gray beards in our industry: No one knows what works.

The founding editor of People, a wonderful guy named Richard Stolley, who was the editor of Life at one point, developed 10 “rules” for covers. No. 10 was to never, ever put a penguin on a cover.

He and his team at Life had what they thought were the best images from Antarctica ever, and put on the cover what they deemed the most delightful, energetic and fun wildlife photo. It bombed.

That was it for penguins.

Stolley’s Rule No. 1 is: “Recently dead celebs.” They do wonders for magazines. It’s rather macabre, but think John Lennon, Princess Diana and Michael Jackson. People thrives on those. Stolley ruefully noted, however, you can’t depend on one every week.

Thankfully, Palm Beach Illustrated and Naples Illustrated have a different mission. Our brand signature is fashion on the cover, executed with a creative vision and by a talented crew of photographers, models, stylists and design experts. Add topquality paper and printing to the mix, and you have a beautiful, hopefully iconic, representation of the luxury lifestyle in our markets.

Anniversary issues always present a special challenge. In this case, a lively debate went on much longer than our cover meetings normally last. The creative team presented some amazing options, prompting the “today has been more fun than most” remark.

Runway s the season heats up for the big push before the spring exodus, runways come to mind—both the fashion and the aviation variety. Fashion-focused fundraisers abound throughout the season, from full-blown runway presentations to intimate client meals with designers.

While many would argue the fashion centers are in New York and Europe, Naples is definitely on the map for designers, many of whom visit to meet and greet some of their best customers or reveal new designs. See what some designers have on their radar for the upcoming season in “From Runway to Reality,” our picks for some of the best design trends (page 88).

Designer appearances are not limited to fashion and shoes.

Jewelry designers also come to Naples, many providing fundraising opportunities for charities through sales. Naples Children & Education Foundation What: The 12th annual Naples Winter Wine Festival charity auction raised $12.2 million for a grand total of $106.7 million raised since 2001. Auction proceeds benefit Collier County’s underprivileged and at-risk children. Wine Spectator has ranked the festival the most successful charity wine auction in the nation since 2004.

Winning bidders were among 580 guests. Lot totals ranged from $35,000 to $1.2 million for 67 auction lots. Events included Meet the Kids Day and luncheon, vintner dinners, the auction and a celebration brunch.

Be Inspired Handbag designer Be Inthavong was born in Laos but grew up in Texas, where his family emigrated when he was 8. Like many young immigrants, he vowed to live the life of a westerner, but upon revisiting his homeland after college, he reconnected with his roots in a powerful, unexpected way. Soon after, he began a career in design, spanning the gamut from jewelry to hair accessories. Eventually, he answered a calling to handbag design, forming Be & D with partner Steve Dumain. He left that company in 2009 and launched his own signature collection of bags, using an original technique inspired by Laotian weaving traditions, with a modern twist. The bags, made of microstrips of leather woven with silk and presented in an array of resort colors, are carried exclusively by Saks Fifth Avenue.

NI talked with the singer, who was in New York in the midst of planning and rehearsing for an album of cabaret standards with a release planned this summer. The operatic choices are arias from roles that I do or have done frequently, and sort of tell a nice story of the kind of work I’ve done operatically. And the cabaret, there is just so much material out there, it’s just one of my favorite things to do. … It’s always difficult to narrow it down to make the choice for the concert, but I think it’s an interesting combination.

n Do you have a favorite opera role?

If I had to choose one right now it would be Tosca. I love the character, the vocalism really suits me. I actually refer to it as my glove opera, it just fits me in so many ways. It’s something I really enjoy exploring each time I get to perform it. n How do you like to spend your free time?

I love being in my beautiful new home, and I love going grocery shopping and cooking. My favorite thing to do is wake up in the morning, have some coffee, go through my recipe books, choose something that we want to cook for dinner that night, and plan accordingly. It’s sort of coffee, recipe, gym workout, grocery store, home, chopping—in that order. n When it comes to your music listening habits, do you have any guilty pleasures you’re willing to confess?

I have found with almost 25 years in the profession that my time away from the musical score is precious, and I don’t actually listen to much music. But if I had to name something, I really like turning on country music when I’m in the car.

The creators of the recently launched Gordon’s on the River at Naples Harbour set out to design a unique experience that would be elegant yet comfortable and intimate. With indoor seating for just 60, Gordon’s revives the aura of a private dinner club, serving steaks, seafood, game dishes and a host of classics, including Veal Oscar and Florida Lobster Thermidor. Live entertainment pays homage the heyday of supper clubs, with music recalling Frank Sinatra and others from the ’40s and ’50s, along with dancing. The restaurant, which also serves Sunday brunch, is open to Naples Harbour club members, but nonmembers can enjoy dining too. With a reservation, nonmembers receive a complimentary 10-day social membership that includes access to the club’s pool, fitness room, sauna and all dining facilities. Once guests experience the amenities, they are welcome to sign up for a social membership.

NORTH STARS A quality revolution burnishes Washington State wines’ image.

Although Oregon seems to get most of the attention in the Pacific Northwest, Washington State in recent years has emerged as one of the most exciting wine regions in the country—if not the world.

A majority of the state’s 700 wineries are located in the rain shadow of the Cascade Range. They benefit from consistent temperatures, long sunny days, and a latitude very close to that of Bordeaux, and are turning out wines ranging from everyday bargains to world-class collectibles.

Washington’s largest producer is Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, a collection of properties including Columbia Crest, Erath, Red Diamond, Snoqualmie, 14 Hands and Northstar. Founded in 1934, Chateau Ste. Michelle itself is the state’s oldest winery. While Chateau Ste. Michelle makes fine single-vineyard offerings such as Canoe Ridge, Cold Creek and Horse Heaven, it is also known for terrific entry-level wines, such as its Riesling ($10), dry Pinot Gris ($13) and powerful yet balanced Cabernet Sauvignon ($15).

The quality revolution in Washington really started in the 1970s with Quilceda Creek. Alex Golitzin, nephew of legendary California winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff, began making wine at home. With his uncle’s encouragement, he bottled his first commercial vintage in 1979. Today, Golitzin produces about 5,000 cases of a Cabernet Sauvignon that has been described as opulent, multidi64 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

mensional and awe-inspiring—which is hard to find, even with a $200 price tag. Continuing that tradition is Leonetti Cellar, founded

by Gary and Nancy Figgins in 1977. Leonetti is now the most famous winery in Walla Walla, best known for concentrated reds that reflect their Italian heritage.

Chris Camarda established his tiny Andrew Will Winery in 1989, naming it for his son Will and nephew Andrew. He works with nine carefully selected sites in the Columbia Valley, crafting blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, including Two Blondes ($60) and Sorella ($75). On the more reasonable end of the price scale, Charles Smith is one of the most exciting new winemakers in the state. While he has received accolades and high ratings for his pricey, single-vineyard Syrahs, his basic offerings are both food-friendly and delicious. Start with his Kung Fu Girl Riesling or Velvet Devil Merlot (both $13), and move on to his more substantial Chateau Smith Cabernet and Boom Boom Syrah (each around $16). Another notable new winery is Mercer Estates, founded by the Mercer family in partnership with Mike Hogue after he left Hogue Cellars. The Mercer wines are carefully crafted and affordable, ranging from the crisp Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris ($13) to the well-made Cabernet and Merlot ($21).

Audi’s dazzling new A7 four-door coupe is a feast for the eyes and just as breathtaking to drive.

There’s a reason why so many new cars these days have all the visual excitement of a Maytag washer-dryer.

Rules and regs on everything from bumper height to hood angle, from headlight size to grille surfacing—all in the good name of safety—will stifle a designer’s creativity as quickly as downing a pint of novocaine.

Throw in the need for cars to be aerodynamically optimized, so as to cheat the wind and guzzle less gas, and you tend to end up with shapes spit out from mega-gig Dells that possess all the bold, angular tension of Play-Doh. Yet once in a while, a car comes along that breaks all the rules. A car so achingly gorgeous, so classy, so stylish, so darned sexy, you wonder whether it’s not some wild auto show concept never destined for production.

But the stunning 2012 Audi A7 is up for grabs right now and grabbing more awards than Clooney on Oscar night: Autoweek Best of the Best, Esquire Car of the Year, Automobile of the Year. Word has it that it’ll soon be starring in its own reality TV show.

What we have here is a big, fastback four-door, or four-door coupe; a variation on the theme created by the groundbreaking Mercedes-Benz CLS back in 2004. But the added surprise and delight the Audi provides is the addition of a giant, high-lifting tailgate and a cargo area equaled only by a PODS storage container in its 70 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

ability to swallow “stuff.” Never has practicality looked so pretty.

Climb aboard and the coolness continues with a cabin that melds hand-stitched leather and awesome matte-finish veneer luxury with more cool technology than the inside of an Apple store.

Most of the interior fixtures and fittings are sourced from Audi’s flagship A8, including the 8-inch full-color LCD screen that displays stunning Google Earth images. Sign up for T-Mobile and the Audi even becomes a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, supporting as many as eight devices. Then there’s the optional ear-bleeding 1,300-watt Bang & Olufsen stereo with über-cool motorized tweeters that levitate from the corners of the dash. And how cool is the A7’s magic touchpad on the center console? Instead of tapping buttons to input an address into the nav system, you simply draw the letters with your index finger on the small pad.

Of course, the tradeoff of having a roofline that resembles a ski slope is that headroom in the back is a little tight. And getting into the two individual rear buckets requires care not to whack your head. But who says form really has to follow function?

For such a biggish sedan with such athletic lines, you might expect to find a muscled V-8 under the hood. Instead, the Audi gets its considerable motivation from a 3.0-liter, 310-horsepower supercharged V-6 coupled to a swift-shifting, super-responsive eightspeed automatic.

It’s a jewel of a motor, delivering rapid 0-to60-mph sprinting in 5.4 seconds, yet averaging a socially responsible 28 miles to the gallon on the highway. But where the A7 excels is in its mid-range thrust, its 325 pound-feet of torque making light work of scything past slower traffic, or punching out of a tight on-ramp to join interstate traffic.

And with Quattro all-wheel drive expertly and efficiently distributing all those torques among each of the wheels, the Audi feels beautifully balanced and nimble when scooting through tight curves. No complaints either with the steering, which has all the sharpness and precision of a Nip/Tuck scalpel.

Yet despite the car’s sporty genes, the ride is surprisingly smooth, serene and composed, with just the right amount of firmness to remind you that you’re driving a German thoroughbred.

You’ll pay a whisker over $60,000 to drive off in a new A7, though with a few must-have additions—like that $5,900 Bang & Olufsen sound system—it’s not too difficult to top $75-grand.

But this new A7 would seem a good value at $100,000. In my book, a car that looks this delicious is pretty priceless. u

One of the more creative ways of giving is through a donor-advised fund (DAF), a separately identified fund or account that is maintained and operated by a section 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Donor-advised funds, which offer immediate tax benefits, are becoming an increasingly attractive option for individuals, families and organizations looking for alternatives to direct giving or private foundations.

For example, the DAF and a private foundation can work together to fund anonymous grants, facilitate donations of special assets, and simplify international grant making and operational administration.

Board games, natural materials and whimsical details in Comolli’s Florida home make the family feel like they are on vacation even when she is working.

As jewelry designer Tamara Comolli traveled from Marissa Collections on Third Street South to The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, a treecovered street in Old Naples caught her attention, so she turned and drove down it.

She saw a “For Rent” sign on one home and called immediately, renting it without even seeing the inside. Anything, Comolli thought, would be more convenient than a hotel room.

“I was coming from a trunk show; it was a busy time,” she says.

“When we traveled, we had my husband’s golf bag, baby stuff—it was enough to give me a nervous breakdown.”

She found retreat on the tree-lined street a few blocks from the beach. The landlords, who own the home next door as well, have German ancestors. Munich-born Comolli speaks German.

Although she wanted to buy the home where she has now lived for the past five years, the landlords will not sell as long as they live next to it, fearing the home would be torn down and a mega-house built. But they did allow Comolli to renovate it extensively to her liking in a sort of lease-purchase agreement under which she will eventually own the house.

Comolli had been coming to Naples for 15 years for the jewelry business she started in 1992, and Marissa Collections was one of 96 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

her first U.S. clients. Comolli now has a store in the Hamptons, and retailers throughout the country carry her designs. She comes to the United States at least twice a year, and uses the Naples house as a base. While she works in an environment where she feels like she’s on vacation, her son, Timmi, 8, and her husband, Thomas, a film producer, enjoy the beach and abundant golf courses, a happy bonus of choosing Naples. Having her own house means she can keep it stocked with the things she’ll need when she’s overseas.

“The only way I can find time to travel with the family is to take a holiday and work,” she says. “We construct our holidays around the business. My husband and son love it. Both of them play golf, so this is a paradise for them. Now I can travel with my ticket and passport. I never bring luggage.”

Convenience aside, the designer in Comolli wanted an environment that also suited her sensibilities. She turned the ranch-style rental into a stylish beach retreat with new floors, enclosed lanai, pleasing palette and found treasures. “I was very fast in deciding,” she says. “We did it in two months.”

In the living room, she added a hurricane impact-resistant bay window. She bought colorful poufs from Judith Liegeois, an old French mirror and a wicker porch swing from thrift stores, and

items from Anthropologie, Z Gallerie, Arhaus and Peach Tree Designs. “I’m not a person who uses an interior designer,” she says. “I think a house should grow with your life, so things have meaning.”

In her jewelry, she organizes her designs into color stories, and it was the same with her beach house. “I’m big into colors,” she says. “Color stories reflect a certain woman. This house, it’s turquoise, 1960s, Pucci colors. Mint greens, oranges, cream color combination.” The exterior and her office are white and blue, Comolli’s signature brand colors.

As she works in Florida, she can look out the window to a giant banyan tree in the front yard filled with nature, including snakes, raccoons and lizards.

The colors inside are light and happy, except for a dark leather sofa in the family room, a practical addition. “We call it the chocolate sofa, because it’s the only place where my son is allowed to eat ice cream,” she says. “He used to destroy all my furniture with his chocolate fingers.”

Nothing in the house is precious except for the memories made there. The home was designed to be lived in and enjoyed, even with chocolate fingerprints. “We have a big laundry room with a Miele extra-large washing machine that you can’t get in Europe,” Comolli says.

Her store in Germany features a ceiling painted like a blue Florida sky; the doorbell is a bird chirping. In the home she is building in Bavaria, she has an open kitchen, a big garden and lots of light. She used the same sand-colored hickory floors she used in the Florida house in her home in Germany. “Everything I’ve done in 20 years is part of the brand,” she says.

Her basic design philosophy is happy and casual. Even her signature drop icon is a water drop, not a tear. “It’s luxury hippie,” she says of her style. “Every woman has her casual moment.”

Florida allows her plenty of casual moments, including loading up a small wagon designed to look like a boat with beach essentials, and rolling it down the driveway with Timmi to the beach. “I told my husband no TV, and for the first four years, we had no TV. Then my son told me he could learn English by watching American TV, so we got a very small one. Mostly, it’s on the Golf Channel. There’s a happy holiday feel about our time here.” u

Lora Lee Gayer | Broadway actress Lora Lee Gayer knows how to make an entrance. The former Naples resident recently made her Broadway debut as Young Sally opposite Bernadette Peters in The Kennedy Center’s new staging of James Goldman and Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning musical Follies.

Gayer knew she was destined for the Great White Way. “I started theater at a very young age,” she says.

“I fell in love with it when my dad took me to see my first Broadway show at the age of three.”

The family moved to Naples in 1999 where Gayer trained in both theater and voice. She successfully auditioned for the Naples Philharmonic Youth Chorale and participated for several years. Through the Phil’s chorale director, James Cochran, Gayer was introduced to Opera Naples General and Artistic Director Steffanie Pearce.“I owe my voice to her,” Gayer says.

At 15, Gayer moved to Michigan to attend the Interlochen Arts Academy, where she studied voice and theater. “I then went on to Carnegie Mellon University,” Gayer says. “After graduating in 2010 with a degree in musical theater, I moved to New York City, started auditioning, and here I am.”

Since the close of Follies in January, Gayer has several opportunities in the works. “It has been the most wonderful journey,” Gayer says. “I want to do everything—theater, film and television. I hope to always being doing projects I am passionate about and that challenge my brain and body.” —Christina Wells

Tina Langley | fashion Product Developer Former Marco Island resident and Lely High School graduate Tina Langley has risen through fashion’s ranks like a towering stiletto. While working on a communications degree at Florida Gulf Coast University, Langley spent a summer interning at Glamour magazine. A first job followed in the fashion closet at GQ, where she assisted the fashion and creative directors with photo shoots and coordinated the clothing and accessories featured in the publication. Langley was then hired by Harper’s Bazaar as an assistant to the market director.

Nylon magazine was Langley’s next stop, where she edited pages and covered the market. Langley then landed the position of senior accessories editor at Seventeen, where from 2007 to 2010 she managed the selection of all accessories photographed.

“My time spent working in fashion editorial was an amazing experience,” Langley says. “It exposed me to some of the most iconic ready-to-wear designers, editors and stylists in the industry.”

In 2010, Langley was intrigued when she heard about a fashion director position at Marc Fisher Footwear, which handles design and distribution for the Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, Sigerson Morrison, Marciano, Ivanka Trump and Isaac Mizrahi shoe lines, to name a few. She became trend forecaster for the design teams. Langley focused on forecasting for a year, but recently moved into product development and design.

Her career would seem to demand she wear comfortable shoes. “I’m constantly moving between New York City, Europe and Asia in search of design inspiration,” Langley says. “The hours are long and there is a lot of travel, but this role is definitely an exciting and creative position. SWEET PURSUIT Benjamin Fleischer | Entrepreneur With a taste for success and the will to improve the health of our nation, Naples resident Benjamin Fleischer is making a difference, one packet of sugar substitute at a time. Founder and CEO of Pyure Brands, Fleischer’s business is in stevia, an all-natural, zero-calorie, sugar-free sweetener. “This is a natural solution,” says Fleischer about stevia’s health benefits and taste attributes. “This is the next generation of sweeteners.”

Built from the ground up by Fleischer, Pyure Brands entered the market in 2008 when stevia was just finding its legs. After intensive research and development, Fleisher came to Naples, where his parents have a home, to develop a proprietary extract in relative isolation. He created the first organic stevia product in the United States.

His extracts are now used for an array of products for both retail—the organic-certified tabletop sweetener is available at Whole Foods—and commercial markets, including organic tabletop sweeteners and an organic honey substitute, as well as extracts and blends for turnkey and co-branded products.

Now Fleischer and Pyure look to the future, with new products to reshape the food and beverage industry, while using fair trade practices, responsible production, and educational and giving-back programs. “I want Pyure to be synonymous with organic solutions, and go after mainstream products that are high in sugar and make them sugar-reduced or sugar-free. Mimi Chapin Gregory | Francophile Mimi Chapin Gregory takes a worldview of life from her home in Naples. Her interest in foreign affairs has spanned 25 years. After living in Paris from 1978 to 1980 as a recruiter for the banking industry, she connected with French language and culture. “There’s never enough time in France,” she says. “I wanted to keep a thread of French life.”

In 1983, she became involved with the Alliance Française, an organization for Francophiles with 114 chapters in the United States, and has served as president of several chapters and is currently national president.

In 1990, she was decorated by the French government as a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, and in October she was awarded the Grade of Commander in the National Order of Merit, a civilian recognition of her service to France. “It’s a tremendous honor of which I’m very proud,” she says.

Gregory has also served local and national offices in the Council on World Affairs, traveling on leadership missions to Lebanon, Kuwait, Israel, Egypt, Taiwan, Germany and Iraq. When war broke out in her ancestral Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Gregory worked to ease the plight of refugees, arrange medical care for wounded children, and obtain needed medical equipment. She even traveled to the area during the war.

Cynthia WilD | Interior designer In 1977, at age 30, Cynthia Wild built a community of 225 townhomes in Miami. The project was called Cindi’s Place. Its success inspired her to tackle a vast array of design projects in the United States and London. Neiman Marcus featured Wild sheet designs for Martex. She also launched numerous wall-covering and furniture collections and was the only Florida-based designer invited to design rooms in The Celanese House, a Celanese Corporation decorator show house in New York. Wild received National Home Furnishings Association Product Design accolades for Outstanding Contemporary Wall-Covering Design, and the Euster Award for outstanding contributions to the home furnishings industry. “I am blessed to work in many aspects of design and in many different places,” says Wild. “I never know what I will be designing next.”

Seven years ago, Wild made Naples her home, where she designs creative one-of-a-kind interiors for residential clients. In some ways, she’s gone back to her roots. “I have a vision of a real Old Florida home with deep porches all around it,” she says. “There would be sweeping views through French doors from a main house looking over the pool deck to the guesthouse beyond. The home would have a relaxed, comfortable feel offering a true indoor/outdoor Naples way of life.” —Christina Wells

Center Court Bjorn Fratangelo | tennis player Bjorn Fratangelo excels at No. 1 rankings. The tennis phenom has held the top spot in the United States Tennis Association’s Boys 14, 16 and 18 age divisions. Along the way, Fratangelo has won some of the most prestigious junior tournaments. Major titles include the 2008 Boys 14 Winter Nationals, the 2009 and 2010 Boys 16 Clay Court Championships and the 2010 Boys 18 Clay Court Championships. Fratangelo, who is coached by his father, considers 2011 a breakout year. “In June, I became the first American boy since John McEnroe to win the French Open boys’ title in Paris,” Fratangelo says. “This was really when the tennis world started to get to know me.”

With the win in Paris, he reached a career high of No. 2 in the International Tennis Federation World Junior Rankings. He returned to the States and posted impressive results on the USTA Pro Circuit, reaching the final in the $10,000 event in Pittsburgh and the quarterfinals of a $15,000 event in Canada. With his junior career behind him, Fratangelo is currently deciding whether to turn pro or go to college. “Both are good decisions,” he says. “I’m just figuring out what will be best for me.” —Christina Wells

Tarren Bragdon | Activist Tarren Bragdon was elected to the Maine House of Representatives at age 21, becoming the youngest state representative elected in Maine and ousting a three-term incumbent.

“I’d always had an interest in politics and thought I would run for office later in life,” he says. “To be young in office, you have to work harder to prove yourself, but you have a fresh perspective not colored by cynicism or, ‘we’ve always done it this way.’ ” After two terms in office, Bragdon realized he wanted to work on the policy side, and for three and a half years served as CEO of the Maine Heritage Policy Center, a conservative nonprofit research and educational organization. A lifelong Maine resident, Bragdon heard the siren call of snow-free winters on visits to Florida. He recognized that Florida, a much larger state with greater political impact, would be a good place to start a similar organization, as well as raise his four adopted children.

“I like policy work at the state level,” he says. “Here I can raise our young family and influence public policy.”

Last June, he founded the Foundation for Government Accountability, a free-market think-tank working to advance policies by advocating for transparent government, research, policy development and lobbying.

Although he travels frequently to Tallahassee, he feels that having headquarters in Naples allows him to be “outside the bubble that is the capital. The legislature is in session for two months out of the year, so the locus of power is not in Tallahassee.” —Kathy Becker 108 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Beautiful Picture Claiborne Swanson Frank | Photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank kept pushing aside her desire to be a photographer. Once she decided to pursue photography, however, she discovered her gift. Next month marks the release of her first book, American Beauty, published by Assouline.

Swanson Frank lived in Naples until she was five, where her father, W. Clarke Swanson Jr. of the Swanson frozen prepared foods fame, ran a media business. After he sold the business, the family moved to London. In 1985, he purchased land for a winery in Napa Valley, where Swanson Frank grew up. After studying fashion and working as a fashion buyer and manager in California, Swanson Frank moved to New York at age 26 to work as a fashion stylist. “I loved photography, but I feared I wasn’t good enough,” she says. Within 10 months of arriving in New York, she was engaged to James Frank and working as an assistant to Vogue editor in chief, Anna Wintour.

In 2007, Sawnson Frank began photographing her friends and sisters to build her portfolio. The series of 29 portraits, called “Indigo Light,” led to a show at Akris in New York during Fashion Week, and her next project. “I got a book deal with less than a year of shooting,” she says. “For the past two years I’ve been shooting 120 women in art, fashion, interior design and business.”

Even as her career takes off, Sawnson Frank returns to the family home in Naples for holidays. “There are so many wonderful memories in Naples that are special to my family,” she says. —Kathy Becker NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2012 109

Paul Woods | Biofuel pioneer Going green isn’t just a trendy lifestyle pursuit for Paul Woods—he believes it could be the answer to many of the planet’s most pressing issues, including climate change, energy and water supply. When Woods was 22, his idea that algae could produce ethanol was fostered by a stolen library book (that he still has) when he was a genetics student in Canada in 1984. The concept has been building slowly ever since. In 2006, the idea bloomed with the launch of Algenol, a Bonita Springs-based biofuel company developing a commercially viable algae-to-ethanol production facility that has the attention and financial support of the U.S. Department of Energy, Lee County and Valero Energy Corp., among others.

“In the fall of 1989, I thought of an idea of how to deregulate the natural-gas business that I started in my garage,” he says. “It allowed me to finance research and patent attorneys. After 1989, [ethanol] was a hobby. Once I got a bill from the patent attorney for $89,000. No doubt I had doubts, but I was stubborn enough to keep going. I am happy for the perseverance.”

Woods retired in 2000 from the natural-gas business. It wasn’t until the price of crude oil reached $50 a barrel that he decided the time was right for alternative fuels. “After 11 years of being in the natural-gas business, I was an expert in the fundamentals of energy,” he says. “Lowpriced oil was over. We’d never see cheap crude oil again.”

Woods believes he can produce 6,000 gallons of ethanol per acre per year with algae and sunlight, with the bonus of recycling carbon dioxide and producing fresh water. A 36-acre bio-refinery is being built to prove the commercial viability of production, along with projects worldwide.

Mr. Maximum Michael Feuer | Business guru Michael Feuer takes everything to the max. After starting OfficeMax in 1988 with $20,000 of his own money and growing it to more than 1,000 locations, he sold it in December 2003. He followed that by forming a venture capital firm, Max-Ventures, to develop new retail concepts, including his own, Max-Wellness.

He also began sharing his knowledge on successful business practices through lectures and his column for Smart Business magazine, which led to publishing a business leadership book, The Benevolent Dictator.

Feuer also is active on corporate and nonprofit boards focused on health care, including the strategic planning and marketing committee for NCH Healthcare Systems. He’s working on two new books, a sequel to his business book and a novel with corporate intrigue.

Max-Wellness grew out of his own interest in fitness and experience serving on health-care boards. Believing that the current health-care environment will result in consumers having to take care of themselves, he wanted to create a resource for promoting wellness.

Feuer put one of his first stores 10 minutes from his Naples winter home so he could pop in and observe customers. “Starting a business from scratch is much like working in a laboratory in that you have to test techniques and presentations,” he says. He has opened other stores in Florida and Cleveland, Ohio; launched a website; and in the spring, will launch Wellness-in-a-Box to provide travel wellness products in airports.

His biggest contribution to wellness was becoming a successful bone marrow donor for his brother.

“It’s a strange but wonderful feeling to think that I could make a difference of this magnitude,” he says.

Strike up the Band The Naples Concert Band has been entertaining residents and visitors with rousing music in Cambier Park and other venues for 40 years. Something to Smile About The Naples Children & Education Foundation has given the area plenty of reasons to smile in more than 10 years of fundraising for children’s charities. This month, the organization that founded the Naples Winter Wine Festival is being recognized for its pioneering dental education work. At the American Dental Education Association conference March 19, the foundation will be honored with a William J. Gies Award for vision, innovation and achievement in dental education, research and leadership. A 2005 needs assessment commissioned by the foundation found that 17,000 Collier County children lacked adequate dental care. Through a partnership with the University of Florida College of Dentistry, Edison State College, CHS Healthcare and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, the foundation created the NCEF Pediatric Dental Center in 2008.

The event, to raise funds to support programs for the Archangel Fund administered by Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church, will be held around the pool at a private home in Port Royal. Jim and Liz Jessee retired to Naples in 1998. Liz was a realtor and Jim spent 10 years with the FBI, followed by 25 years with Proctor & Gamble. The couple now channels their formidable people savvy and organizational skills into an array of philanthropic pursuits.

“Naples is such a giving community,” Jim says. “There are so many tremendous opportunities to volunteer.”

Jim sits on the board of Youth Haven. He is a former board member and president of The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, and is a member of the organization’s ‘Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence.

Liz, a cancer survivor, is chair of the American Cancer Society Bucket List Bash.

She serves on the board of Sunrise Community of Collier County, which supports developmentally disabled adults. Liz is a past chair for the Mending Broken Hearts With Hope luncheon for The Shelter for Abused Women & Children; the Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration of Trinity-by-theCove church; Magic Under the Mangroves for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida; and Trinity-by-the-Cove’s former Naples Art & Antiques Show.

The Jessees will host four charity dinners in their home, for the Guadalupe Center of Immokalee, The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, Planned Parenthood and the Archangel Fund for Collier County Charities.

Philanthropy is a family affair for the Jessees. Their daughter, Chandra, is a philanthropist in New York City, where she supports charities that promote equality for women and girls around the world.

“Our family has been very blessed,” Liz says. “We are not going to sit here and do nothing. Jim and I support these causes financially, but find it just as satisfying to can give to a community is your heart in the form of time, talent and treasure.” u
