PROFESSION: PILOT CAREER: ACTOR People are acquainted with the star, the multi-faceted actor. But John Travolta is also a seasoned pilot with more than 5,000 flight hours under his belt, and is certified on eight different aircraft, including the Boeing 747-400 Jumbo Jet. He nurtures a passion for everything that embodies the authentic spirit of aviation. Like Breitling wrist instruments. Founded in 1884, Breitling has shared all the finest hours in aeronautical history. Its chronographs meet the highest standards of precision, sturdiness and functionality, and are all equipped with movements that are chronometer-certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute). Plastic And Reconstructive Surgery Can Change Your Life DR. ELIZABETH FOX ANSWERS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS. Plastic surgery is cutting-edge, exciting and life-altering. People are taking better care of their health and therefore living more productive, fulfilling and longer lives. This is why it is important that your outward appearance projects the vitality and youth that you feel on the inside. Join us on this rewarding journey and discover the difference plastic surgery will make in your life.

Q:

Dear Dr. Fox: My wife has always wanted to have larger breasts, especially after having had three kids. With the holidays, I think this would be a great present for her, but how do we decide what size she should be?

A:

During your consultation appointment, we will be able to determine what size breasts she wants. Next we will discuss the shape of her breasts, specifically how she likes the upper part of her breasts, her cleavage and her lateral contour. Cleavage is so important to patients postoperatively. My patients not only appreciate the cleavage but also the size they expect be after the operation.

Q:

Dear Dr. Fox: I know that I need to get a tummy tuck, but I feel like I should try to lose weight before I have the procedure. I’ve been trying to lose weight for the last five years, but here I am another year later, knowing I need to do it yet still the same weight. What should I do?

A:

My philosophy is that if plan A isn’t working, then maybe we need to move to plan B. Certainly waiting is not a healthy alternative, mentally or physically. Tightening the skin and muscle over the stomach does several things. With a tummy tuck there is a physical tightening that makes you feel full sooner, which will help in curbing your appetite and actually promote weight loss. The second benefit is that because you feel better about your appearance, many women will gain motivation to continue to work out and tone up.

“With a tummy tuck there is a physical tightening that makes you feel full sooner which will help in curbing your appetite and actually promote weight loss.”

Q:

Dear Dr. Fox: My husband keeps asking me if I’m mad at him for something. I kept telling him no, but when I looked in the mirror yesterday, I noticed that my mouth is turning down as I get older. Worse yet, I have those smoker lines around my mouth, and I never even smoked. What can I do to fix this?

A:

The first thing I would do is ask your husband if there is a reason you should be mad at him. After that, one of the most important things to do is prevent your expression from appearing angry or tired. As you may have noticed, if people perceive that you are angry, they will respond to you differently than if they perceive you as happy. The lines also may make you seem older than your actual age. In order to improve these, we can restore your lip volume to help erase these lines around your mouth, and we can fill in the corners of your mouth.

I hope that I have answered all of your questions. Please direct any plastic surgery questions to: www.elizabethfoxmd.com or join us at our next seminar

friend recently asked me about the magazine business and the impact that innovations such as tablet computers and electronic readers are having on the industry. He didn’t say so directly, but his question implied that we probably perceive them as competition. Quite the opposite, I answered. Why would we worry about anything that makes it easier to connect with the people who want to hear from us? Sometimes, reality gets lost amid the hype. It’s common knowledge that audiences are spurning newspapers and broadcast media for online news and entertainment, but magazines are different. People still love magazines. Research says, in fact, readership is higher than ever, and includes an expanding audience of younger people. Readers still seek the kind of content magazines deliver. A new study from Affinity says 188 million American adults consider themselves magazine readers. That’s about 90 percent of the U.S. adult population and holding steady. Time and again, people say they enjoy magazines because they offer relevant, useful information as well as a tactile, visual and thoroughly engaging experience they can enjoy at their own pace. Even in this fast-paced world, magazine readers overwhelmingly make time to savor every page—editorial and advertising alike—and they ultimately regard magazines as more trustworthy, more inspiring and more relaxing than any other medium. Still, the best magazine companies have seized the opportunities created by emerging technology. We can present messages in unique ways—video, searchable lists, podcasts or other additional content—as a companion to print products, or let them stand on their own. Most top publishers have learned how to effectively blend the strengths of online media with the traditionally rich quality of print. At our company, we have embraced technology as an ever-growing pipeline for getting information into the hands of those who actively want it. Even so, chew on this: In the 13 years since Google launched, U.S. magazine readership has grown by 11 percent, according to GfK Mediamark Research & Intelligence, an independent organization that studies consumer habits. Magazines have maintained their prominent place in the marketplace of information and ideas, even as new avenues arise. Our goal tomorrow will be the same as today: to create great products for motivated audiences and the advertisers who want to reach them—and deliver them every way we can.

FROM THE EDITOR

STYLISH LADY

O

ur March edition, the style issue, is the perfect outlet to salute a long-time friend of the magazine. Jane Ogden, 80, will no longer call me for coffee or with ideas for articles. She won’t introduce me to people she thinks I should know through lunches at the Royal Poinciana Club. I won’t be able to take her for tea at Tea With Me at Audrey’s, as we had planned before she became ill last fall. But the legacy of this classy, gracious British woman continues both at Naples Illustrated and in Naples. Jane served on our inaugural Advisory Board in 1998, and took me under her wing when I joined the magazine in 1999. She served on the board until 2002. (See our new board on page 26.) But her influence didn’t end there. She continued as a personal advisor and friend to me ever since, keeping me informed and invited to charity events, loaning me items from her impressive closet, and introducing me to delightful places and people. Sadly, she and I will never complete the story we often talked about, “Jane’s London,” which, of course, would have involved both of us on a whirlwind overseas tour of her favorite places. What amazed me most about Jane after she was gone was that she had so many special friends from all aspects of her life, all of whom felt her warmth and attention in a way that made each feel like her most treasured friend. It was her amazing gift and quintessentially Jane. Jane’s style was inside and out. As a former model, she always looked her best, even if it was just for coffee at Starbucks. Her dear friend for more than 40 years, author Barbara Taylor Bradford, described Jane’s “uniform” as black pantsuit, heels, pearls and a Kelly bag. Barbara wrote: “There was no one quite like Jane in my life. Aside from her marvelous sense of humor and compassion, she was staunchly loyal, loving and devoted.” There’s so much in this style issue that Jane would have appreciated. A huge fan of hunting for wonderful fashion classics, she loved a good bargain. On page 90, we go shopping with some chic Naples ladies. Jane also loved youth and all its possibilities, including our “People to Watch” feature about the area’s up and comers, page 102. (She is pictured above, right, with Connie Dillon at last year’s launch of the annual series.) And we salute another Naples lady, Simone Lutgert, who epitomizes fashion style and lifestyle through her philanthropic endeavors (page 80).

A NEW AMERICAN CLASSIC As the creative director of Coach, Reed Krakoff knows a thing or two about classic American design. Now, with the launch of his own brand, he is re-embracing American style and re-imagining the sportswear classics. The Reed Krakoff Collection is classic with an edge—modern, luxurious, beautifully constructed, a yin and yang of masculine and feminine references. A full lifestyle collection of ready-to-wear, shoes, handbags, jewelry, small leather goods, sunglasses and watches, RK is already winning over stylish women around the globe. Locally, the collection is available at Saks Fifth Avenue. Krakoff talks with NI about his influences, inspirations and creative process. —Daphne Nikolopoulos

YOU POD SOFT SCRUB When the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club underwent a major redo, even the inroom amenities received a total makeover, with management directing the supplier to create new soaps, lotions and shampoos. Spa Director Kate Keating requested exclusive new scrubs and body soufflés too, which debuted late in the fall. “The scrub had to be all-natural, and made of sugar,” she says, because it imparts a healthy glow by exfoliating more gently than salt. The lightly scented, luxurious products are featured in two new treatments, the complexion-boosting Tropical Glow Sugar Scrub, and the relaxing hydrotherapy NBH Signature Scrub, which uses the spa’s Vichy shower to target tension. Keating says the spa offers a Skinfully Delicious package, which includes the Tropical Glow scrub, relaxation massage, and aroma-therapeutic facial, for head-to-toe indulgence.

A TASTE FOR HEALTH Chef Derin Moore at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples understands the link between well-being and healthy eating. He has revamped the dining space, =H2O+, at the resort’s spa into an “oasis of nutrition,” working with the spa’s management team to create a dining area and menu for an adult escape, where visitors relax and enjoy nutritious and tasty meals. Menu choices at the indoor/outdoor café feature all-natural ingredients in dishes like spinach salad (below), tabbouleh and beet salad, seared yellowfin tuna and seaweed, and a CLT—cucumber, lobster and tomato sandwich. There’s an assortment of artisan breads baked on-site daily to take home. And there’s more. The Spa offers classes Wednesday mornings at =H2O+ through March, with lifestyle tips and cooking demos for healthy living. Plans are under way to make the outdoor area more lounge-y for passing the day in a peaceful way. The café is open to the public, as well as resort guests and spa members.

As much as we’d all like a cookie-cutter answer to losing weight, there’s no magic pill. A successful individualized plan can be developed, though, with the right information. Michael Ferencsik, 48, a 2010 International Natural Body Building Association Natural Olympia Champion, certainly knows what works for his own program. Now, using the state-of-the-art Bod Pod Body Composition Monitoring System, Ferencsik can devise a unique diet and exercise program for each person. With its sci-fi look, the pod—used by universities, professional sports training facilities and research centers—is one of two in Southwest Florida; the other is in Tampa. It uses air to accurately measure body fat, lean muscle and resting metabolic rate, allowing Ferencsik to tailor eating and exercise plans in his one-clientat-a-time training program at Apex Fitness of Naples.

LOU GOT IT

Lou Gossett Jr., Academy Awardwinner for Officer and a Gentleman, thought he had it all—a career in films, fame and fortune. But he had more than he could handle when drugs and alcohol took over his life for 25 years. Now seven years sober, he’s promoting what he learned about himself and life through his Eracism Foundation, which aims to end racism through cultural diversity, historical enrichment, education and antiviolence initiatives. Gossett, who also beat prostate cancer, will share his message of survival at a luncheon March 24 to honor Collier County Chief of Corrections Scott Salley and raise money for Patient Aid at Hazelden in Naples. —Kathy Becker ■ How have you changed? I won’t do a movie that’s negative. That may mean I’m being bypassed for roles. I’m okay with that. I’m still in Malibu; I have money in the bank. The only thing that’s changed is that I’m healthy and sober, my children love me, my grandchildren adore me, and I have time for my dogs. ■ How were you finally able to overcome addiction? I was totally defeated. That’s what it takes for all of us, to be between a rock and a hard place. It’s a sad day when your best friend, drugs and alcohol, doesn’t work. But somewhere, there was a kernel of gold.

VANESSA ROGERS

A NIGHT IN PROVENCE Claudio and Seda Scaduto’s annual month-long pilgrimage to southwestern France translates into fresh menu offerings to complement the signature Provençal dishes at their North Naples restaurant, Cote d’Azur. New dishes incorporate the region’s best ingredients—truffles, walnuts, foie gras and game birds. Moulard duck, farm-raised pheasant and quail star in entrées enhanced by ingredients including figs, quince, morels, butternut squash and chestnuts, and accompanied by nuanced wine sauces that round out each dish. Whole fish always figures prominently at the restaurant; don’t miss the new pan-seared wild striped bass with baby root vegetables, wild mushrooms and a spark of orange zest. No matter which direction the main course takes, dessert is practically mandatory; a puffy profiterol or a tricolor chocolate mousse strikes a sweet end note.

SLAINTE! In March, we toast all things Irish. At 33 years old, the annual Naples Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (March 12 this year) stands as a venerated institution. A cheerful overflow crowd spills from McCabe’s Irish Pub into Sugden Plaza, with revelers downing corned beef and cabbage, Irish stews and brews. Another great stop on the parade route along Fifth Avenue South, Paddy Murphy’s Irish Pub, offers Guinness Stout, Harp, and Smithwicks on draft to wash down fish and chips and shepherd’s pie. For a treat of authentic Erin on Marco Island, head to O’Donoghue’s Bar & Grill, opened last June by Peter and Helen Donaghy, Irish imports from Tyrone and County Cork, respectively. Chef Annie Depiero, a native of Dublin, dishes up Irish sausages, lamb stew, a rich beef and Guinness casserole, and daily specials, as well as a soul-satisfying bread and butter pudding with Irish whiskey sauce. O’Donoghue’s will feature live Irish music on Saint Paddy’s Day, as they do every Tuesday through Sunday. On Sundays, for those with an appetite for tradition, O’Donoghue’s serves an authentic full Irish breakfast—from bacon, eggs, black and white pudding, and sausage, to baked beans and grilled tomato.

When business owners in Crayton Cove on Naples Bay wanted to draw attention to the destination’s many attractive features, they banded together, forming Discover Crayton Cove. To shine the light on the area’s galleries, shops, restaurants, charter boats and more, the group created a website and newsletter, as well as special promotions. With Cook-My-Catch, guests of Crayton Cove fishing charters can have their catch cooked for them at Bleu Provence, Bamboo Café or The Dock, served with a variety of side dishes. There also is a signature cocktail to toast the resurgence of the rustic marine district, the Crayton Cove Classic Daiquiri, available at Bamboo, Bleu Provence and The Dock. “We chose the daiquiri, as it’s a classic, and we wanted to go back in time to when life was simpler, coinciding with Crayton Cove’s sixtieth anniversary this year,” says Discover Crayton Cove President Karen Stone. “It was important to have a cocktail that would complement a wide variety of dishes and still have a tropical flair.”

BIG, BOLD BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DELIVERS A PERFECT BALANCE OF DEPTH AND REFINEMENT. BY MARK SPIVAK

In nineteenth-century Tuscany, the BiondiSanti family decided that a certain clone of Sangiovese could be used to produce glorious wines through the process of extended cask aging. Though the rest of the world was slow to agree, the end result was Brunello di Montalcino, one of the iconic red wines of modern Italy, known for its captivating combination of power and finesse. At the end of World War II, the Biondi-Santi winery was still the only producer of Brunello, but the category grew exponentially over the next 50 years. Today there are nearly 250 estates in the region, making more than 500,000 cases of wine. To the American public, the best-known producer is probably Castello Banfi, owned by the Mariani family. The massive property encompasses nearly 2,400 acres of vines, along with a castle and museum, a restaurant and a luxury hotel, and has become a favorite destination for U.S. visitors. Banfi Brunello is also relatively affordable, averaging $75 per bottle, compared to the $250-$300 typically charged

for a bottle of Biondi-Santi. In general, pricing is determined by many factors—the estate’s total production, the location of the vineyards, the consumer demand for the wine, and whether the bottle is a regular Brunello (aged at least four years) or a riserva (a minimum of five years in cask and bottle prior to release). As with other full-bodied Italian wines, such as Barolo, a sharp division exists between the traditional and modern styles of Brunello. Old-style Brunello is characterized by high acidity and formidable,

Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah. Priced slightly higher than $20 per bottle, popular examples include Silvio Nardi and Sesta di Sopra; for wines closer to the $30 range, Valdicava and Altesino are good bets. Whether Brunello or Rosso, the food matchups are similar: steak or lamb, game birds, and meat dishes in substantial or complex sauces. ◆ sometimes astringent tannins that take many years of bottle aging to mellow. Producers working in the newer, more “international style tend to make wines with higher alcohol levels, along with more forward fruit to make the wine appealing when young. Lisini, Salvioni and Il Poggione are examples of more traditional Brunello houses. Producers with one foot in each camp include Caparzo, Fattoria dei Barbi and Casanova di Neri. A good representation of the more modern style is Poggio Antico Altero, an estate established in 1983. This wine undergoes aging in small, new French oak barrels rather than the customary (and much larger) Slovenian oak casks, which results in a toastier and more dramatic texture. The success of Brunello di Montalcino has attracted famous winemakers to the region from other parts of Italy. A case in point is Angelo Gaja of Piedmont, best known for his vineyard-designated Barbarescos. “Montalcino was appealing to me because it was the cradle of Sangiovese, Gaja says, “and they had the tradition of making wine from a single grape variety, like Barbaresco. He bought the estate of Pieve Santa Restituta in 1994, and today turns out two highly acclaimed Brunellos, Rennina and Sugarille. Not all wine from the Montalcino area is Brunello, and not all of it is expensive. Many Brunello producers bottle a wine called Rosso di Montalcino, which is designed to be softer, fresher and best consumed when young. A good Rosso will often contain some declassified Brunello, which lends structure and backbone to the wine; some will also contain small amounts of Cabernet

Serene and luxurious, The Nam Hai exemplifies Vietnam’s growing status as a chic destination. BY ROBERT RAGAINI

The Nam Hai is more than Vietnam’s first modern luxury resort. It symbolizes a closed economy opening its doors to the world. The beachside haven, which has appeared on the “best lists” of myriad travel publications since it opened in 2007, strives to stay ahead of the competition it inspired.

Located near the quaint ancient city of Hoi An, the resort immediately impresses, with palm trees towering over its 86 acres. Giant pools blend into the sweeping East Sea, and the broad shoreline’s tawny sand stretches for miles. After arriving at the open reception area gleaming with rich teak, guests are whisked by golf cart to a lovely villa, each offering breathtaking views of the ocean. Under a tile roof inspired by traditional Vietnamese garden houses, a raised central platform supports a white-blanketed bed adorned with black posts draped with soft gauze curtains. Behind the bed sits an eggshell-lacquer soaking tub, reflecting the multiple uses of Vietnamese living spaces. The bathroom is stunningly constructed of local stone, and a separate, second shower is set in a private garden outside. At night, the drawn curtains rise to an intricate lattice ceiling, creating a cozy cocoon. The villas are divided into one-bedroom hotel villas, and one- to five-bedroom privately owned pool villas. All are equipped with Bose Sound Systems, iPods preloaded with good music, flat-screen televisions, Wi-Fi and a wet bar. Infinity pools distinguish the 40 privately owned villas, which feature elevated dining and living rooms centered in a traditional courtyard, a kitchen, maid’s room, gardens, and such special benefits as a personal butler, car services and unlimited libations.

While the atmosphere, location and lush grounds of the Nam Hai create the perfect spot for unplugging for some serious downtime, it’s also a wonderful place for honeymooners, family vacations, and spa vacations of shameless indulgence. The spa’s eight treatment rooms are suspended over a tranquil lotus pond, and guests can choose treatments of Ayurvedic, Himalayan, Balinese or Arabian influence. Of course, such a carefully designed resort requires an amazing dining experience. The Restaurant is a visual feast of luminous pools and twinkling candles that set the scene. The chef emphasizes slowly prepared, meticulously flavored Asian and fusion cuisine prepared in an open kitchen. Meals can also be delivered and set on your villa’s dining room table. Another option is The Beach Restaurant, serving fresh local seafood, grilled dishes and salads from an open air kitchen. The resort is a short distance to the Old Town of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site not to be missed. This well-preserved example of an ancient Southeast Asian trade port is a hodgepodge of mansions, elaborate assembly halls and picturesque bridges dating from the fifteenth century. Hoi An is famous for its tailors. The Nam Hai’s concierge can recommend one to create a custom-made suit—or perhaps an elegant ao dai, Vietnam’s traditional national dress, as a tribute to the history of this fascinating country. RANGE ROVER’S SUPERCHARGED AUTOBIOGRAPHY IS STILL THE BEST 4X4. BY HOWARD WALKER

The most frequently asked question we auto critics get—apart from “Any chance you can arrange a Lamborghini for my kid’s bar mitzvah?”—is “What’s the best car?” My usual answer tends to have more “Depends” in it than a retirement home. Depends whether money’s no object—if not, go for a Rolls-Royce Phantom. Depends whether you want something for fun or functionality—go for fun every time. Depends whether you want to get ticketed for speeding every 15 minutes—hello, Bugatti Veyron. Every once in a while I’ll ponder this weighty conundrum over a Starbucks chai latte. Seems I always come up with the same, semi-predictable answer: Range Rover. This piece of merry Olde England has come a long way since the first rude and crude examples sloshed through mud more than 40 years ago. These days, not only is it still the best 4x4 by far, it is a true leather-lined luxury sedan that can rub hubcaps with the likes of BMW’s 7 Series, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and even Bentley’s Continental. What I love is its peerless combination of towering capability— it really will get you to the top of Kanjanjunga, just select low 68 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

ratio—coupled with true technical sophistication and sumptuous, I-could-move-in-tomorrow luxury. Take the latest 2011 Range Rover Autobiography I shared a few days with recently. It comes with a hand-stitched, glove-soft leather roof liner. And rear seats that not only power recline, but feature heating and cooling, and adjustable lumbar support. Throw in individual rear-seat DVD screens and laminated door glass to mute outdoor noise, and it’s like being in your own home movie theater. Junior Mints, anyone? And you haven’t heard anything until you’ve heard Clapton played through the Autobiography’s thumping 1,200-watt, 19speaker Harman Kardon system. You could blow out the windows if you get crazy with the volume. But it’s the fundamental rightness of the cabin that is so appealing. You sit high up in most big SUVs, but in the Range Rover the tops of the doors and dash are so low, and the windows so vast you feel like you’re sitting in an IMAX theater. Views just don’t come more panoramic than this. And to drive it is to adore it. These days, the Range Rover shares a brand new 5.0-liter V-8 with Jaguar’s flagship XJ sedan.

Tuned for the Rover, this supercharged powerhouse cranks out a massive 510horsepower and stump-uprooting 461 lbft of torque. With all that muscle being directed to all four wheels through a Teflon-smooth six-speed automatic, the Autobiography can lunge from standstill to 60 mph in a staggering 5.9 seconds. Hitting the throttle is like opening the floodgates at the Hoover Dam; you don’t so much accelerate as whoooosh. Of course, I could fill the magazine with a description of all the Range Rover’s technical wizardry that enables it to climb up the side of buildings. There’s the patented Terrain Response system, a trio of locking differentials, Hill Start Assist, and Gradient Acceleration Control. And air suspension that can levitate the car to give a full 11 inches of ground clearance. It’s all truly remarkable stuff if you’re wading through water up to your door handles, or you take a wrong turn in the Serengeti. But trust me, you’ll probably never need it. All you need to know is that it’s there—like having a Swiss Army knife in your back pocket, or 64 gigs, rather than 16, on your iPad. That said, take a Land Rover Experience driving school course—maybe at the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina, or the Equinox in Manchester Village, Vermont—and you will be blown away by the sheer off-road prowess of this remarkable machine. They’ll even hose-off the mud after you’re done. Downsides? All that power and weight translates into so-so fuel economy. The official figures are 12 mpg in the city, 18 on the highway. And the folks at J.D. Power and Associates never think too much of Range Rover quality. But here is the car for all seasons, a car for all reasons. Yes, it will set you back $109,965 for the loaded-to-the-gunwales Autobiography—$21,485 over the standard supercharged model. But that’s a small price to pay for the only vehicle you’ll ever need. ◆

I thought we were just going to fish. But I caught so much more.

on’t get me wrong. D I love fishing—always have.

Even when I arrive home empty handed. Yet these days, it’s not just the next catch I’m looking for. Now, I look forward to “catching” some extra special time with my grandson. Sure, we may hook a few. But mostly, it’s what we don’t reel in that winds up being the greatest gift of all. Talking. Laughing. Digging our toes in the sand. Just looking out over the water. I guess that’s how I’d describe my entire outlook on life now that I’ll be moving to The Arlington of Naples. It’s a new choice in retirement living that’s given me a new way to look at things. And the opportunity to enjoy them all. Sure has opened my eyes. One thing is for certain. I’ll never arrive home empty handed again.

in her shoes

Simone Lutgert is not comfortable in the spotlight, despite being in it so frequently. Married to Scott Lutgert, whose family has one of the biggest names in the development of Collier County, she’s a powerful player within social and charity circles. As chairwoman of the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples capital campaign, she’s often the voice and face of the highly visible museum, set to open this spring. Fortunately, Lutgert is comfortable in her own skin, which radiates in her personal, fashion and charitable style, and is one reason she thinks she was chosen by designer Donna Karan a year ago to be one of seven ambassadors of style for the designer’s twenty-fifth anniversary.

BY KATHY BECKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY GARETH ROCKLIFFE/SODERQUIST PHOTOGRAPHY

Simone Lutgert’s selection as a “woman who inspires” by Karan has resulted in several trips to New York for private fashion shows; meetings with the designer and the other ambassadors; being featured in three videos of women’s philanthropic issues on donnakaran.com; and, of course, Donna Karan outfits. A fundraiser for the children’s museum featuring Karan fashion was held in December at Saks Fifth Avenue, which nominated Lutgert for the selection. Another event is planned in early April at Lutgert’s home on Venetian Bay. “I was pretty shy growing up; maybe you could even call me a wallflower,” she says. “I’ve always worked in a charitable mode, but I never wanted to be the lead 80 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

“I don't want to be a star. I don't do anything myself. I'm just the messenger, taking the message of good things out there.” —Simone Lutgert

HANGING OUT Favorite item in Simone Lutgert’s closet: I don’t have a favorite of anything. I have a lot of clothes and have the luxury of shopping in my closet depending on my mood. Fashion trend she hopes will never return: Big, curly ’80s poofy hair. Most outrageous purchase: A pair of gray, linen, sort-of cowboy fringed boots. I don’t think I ever wore them, but they looked cute when I tried them on. Purchase she doesn’t regret: Dries Van Noten fur with all different colors. It’s crazy and way out there, but I’ve worn it so many times. How she would like her children and grandchildren to remember her: I think the main thing is that I was always there for them, and that I was a lot of fun. And by the community: That I made a difference in children’s and families’ lives.

Simone Lutgert calls her personal style classic, but with her unique touches.

dog. But because of who I am—open, honest, authentic—I seem to attract people without trying, to inspire people without trying.” The honor celebrates, according to Donna Karan headquarters, “an elite group of women who embody Donna’s personal values of giving back to their communities.” Seven women were selected from California, Newport, New York, Houston, Santa Barbara and Toronto. Among the women chosen was New York social icon Cornelia Guest. Lutgert believes it says a lot about Naples and its style, since fashionable Palm Beach and Miami were not in the mix. “Naples is understated and not flashy or out there,” she says. “I think [the Donna Karan people] know Naples has a lot going for it. It’s incredible. These are high-powered women. I think the way Naples has connected is not so different than Santa Barbara or Northern California.” She thinks perhaps it was her understated efforts that were attractive to Karan. “Some people say, ‘How did you get this?’” she says. “That’s not what this is about, which is probably one of the reasons I was chosen. I don’t want to be a star. I don’t do anything myself. I’m just the messenger, taking the message of good things out there. I feel very lucky to be in the position I’m in to give back to the community.” Lutgert’s philanthropic and fashion sensibilities were instilled by her parents when she was growing up in Pensacola, where the family often had members from the armed forces from the nearby base to their home to share meals. “They inspired me to give back,” she says. Through her father’s shoe stores, she developed a love of fashion. “In junior high, I learned to sew and make my own clothes, but I’d take a standard pattern and put my own twist,” she says. “I made a

dress for prom with a pleated skirt. I own a dress from Balenciaga that is like that dress I made in the tenth grade.” She still puts her own twist on fashion, preferring to mix and match, while remaining fairly conservative. “My favorite thing to do is to get something new and pull out an old scarf, jacket or accessory. The way I put it together is unique to me. A lot of women in Naples have their own style and are happy to be themselves.” After sewing her own clothes, she has an understanding and appreciation for fine tailoring and detail. “I don’t think Donna Karan works from a pattern. I think she drapes and then creates a pattern. Some of her clothes are so intricate in the way they fit together.” The busy Lutgert does a lot of fitting together to keep all her interests balanced. “I do know how to say no,” she says. “I also know what’s important to me, which is first and foremost myself. Not in a selfish way, though; I can’t do everything or be any good to anyone if I don’t take care of myself.” She works out, goes to the movies with Scott, and travels, spending time with her family and turning down obligations when she’s out of town. “I’m never too busy for my friends, family or myself. At times I feel overwhelmed, but I have a lot of good help.” She calls her daughter Heather her creative right arm, and she gets amazing support from her husband. Lutgert’s greatest strengths and weaknesses stem from her authenticity. “People know I’m a straight shooter, and I say what I mean and mean what I say,” she says. “But I’m also a good listener. I’m not so hard-nosed and rigid to not consider anything else. But if I really believe in something, I don’t back down because it’s the popular thing to do.” Her weakness? “I give my opinion when people haven’t asked for it.” ◆ MARCH 2011 83

GARDEN PARTY Shopper: Shannon Long When Long dresses for a garden party, she favors Pucci pants or shifts because they are colorful and lightweight. But if it is really hot outside, she’ll wear a white linen halter and long, flowing white linen skirt with flat jeweled sandals and gold bangles. Her favorite dress code is for a casual evening. “I love accessories, so I am quite happy in high heels, jeans, jewelry, great bag and fur shrug or wrap of some kind. Boots are also a big vice of mine. I have quite a large collection for a girl who lives in the tropics. Miniskirts and flat tall boots are a great way to tackle the day.”

TRAVEL OUT WEST Shopper: Mary Susan Clinton Clinton likes the flexibility of dressing for a casual chic event, because she can mix a relaxed look with sophisticated touches. “This style can work from carpool line, to a day at the office, and straight to dinner,” she says. When traveling out West, Clinton favors her Lucchese Leggenda hand-tooled Western boots, Citizens of Humanity Amber boot-cut jeans, a Brunello Cucinelli cashmere sweater, Gucci interlocking belt, Bottega Veneta three-way bag, Mara texting gloves, Roberto Cavalli shield sunglasses, suede and fur coat and AmLactin XL moisturizer. Clinton loves the surprise of pairing a cashmere sweater from Target with an antique brooch. “I bought an $8,600 NWT (new with tags) Monique Lhuillier gown on eBay for $1,200, wore it to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, and sold it a few days later on eBay for the same price,” she says. 92 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

COCKTAILS ON THE YACHT Shopper: Retta Singer Singer loves to dress for every occasion, adding her own flair. For an invitation to cocktails on a yacht, she would forego shoes (as is the preference of most boat owners), and head for a Donna Karan long, flowing dress, plus jewelry with lots of bling and a pair of statement sunglasses. She keeps her closet robust by finding an occasional deal. “Fortunately, I can usually tell when I really like an item if it is still available at sale time,” she says. “When I am correct, I am ecstatic!”

CHARITY COCKTAIL PARTY Shopper: Heidi Farrugia Farrugia likes dressing for charity events where, she jokes, the best accessory is a checkbook. Her go-to outfit in her closet is a Michael Kors nude jersey-knit knee-length cocktail dress paired with Oscar de la Renta python-skin heels and a Marc Jacobs large evening bag (also with skin detailing). “Because the dress is so simple, I love to accessorize with lots of gold jewelry, and if it is cool, a colorful Hermès wrap,” she says. “I love getting things on sale, but I still need to love the item! It’s awesome when you find a great Prada or Gucci bag for 50 percent off.”

LADIES’ LUNCH

Shopper: Shirlene Elkins Elkins hasn’t met a theme she doesn’t like, from the many soirees she throws to ones she’s invited to. Once, she sent guests pajamas to make sure they embraced the theme. “I loved it when someone dressed for a downhome Southern fried chicken dinner as a chicken,” she says. “Had I thought of that, I would have definitely worn that!” When she’s not in character, Elkins likes pants, with twin sets a favorite go-to along with fun shoes and a bag. Her favorite bargain finds are by Michael Kors and Oscar de la Renta. “In fact, once on vacation in Italy, I got a call and an e-mail that said someone was having a 40 percent sale on ‘my guys’ and I immediately said yes to all of them,” she says. ◆

SAME WAVELENGTH MARY AND LARRY KENT FIND THEY ARE LIKE THE SURF, RETURNING TO THE BEACH AGAIN AND AGAIN. BY KATHY BECKER PHOTOGRAPHY BY LORI HAMILTON The elegant beach cottage feel the Kents wanted was created by designer Lisa Ficarra Shepherd with custom-designed built-in bookcases by Woodcraft Wall Systems, a Pearson sofa, David Francis Furniture cocktail ottoman with woven cypress and pull-out seating, and custom draperies.

M

ary and Larry Kent explored several areas of Naples for a couple decades and ended up back where they started—at the north end of Gulf Shore Boulevard in The Shores, a waterfront complex built in 1969. Now they are in a remodeled villa just steps from the beach, close to where Larry and his brother, Moe, first shared a condominium as a beach getaway from their northern business in the same complex in the late 1980s. When they sold their company in 1994, Moe Kent moved to Naples permanently, while Larry came back and forth to Naples as time allowed. In the late 1990s, Larry and Mary bought a home in Port Royal. “But we found we didn’t use it enough,” he says. “We sold it and moved back to the beach.” Like most northerners who find their way to Naples, the Kents first flew into Fort Myers and stayed at what was then the Registry Resort. “We walked the beach,” Larry says. “We spotted The Shores, and there was a unit available.”

The small kitchen was opened up to the dining room to create a more open plan.

The section of beach where they bought the first time and again years later is quiet, with low-scale, long-established buildings, which appealed to Kent. “It’s much quieter with a lot less population,” he says. “Nothing has really changed where we are by Doctor’s Pass. It has a certain simplicity about it. Less is more.” It was with the idea of less is more that the Kents approached renovating the beach villa. “We always liked the villas, but it seemed they were never available,” he says, noting that the first two units he bought were in the main condominium building. “We bought the villa two to three years ago in April when one was available.” The Gulf views from nearly every room and the proximity to other units in the complex, one they own for guests and family and one owned by Mary’s brothers, were appealing. “It’s a great place for Mary to visit her brothers,” he says. “It’s a lot more fun to visit in Naples than Detroit.” The floor plan was outdated and unappealing, and needed renovating. “We wanted baths and closets and general living space,” Kent says. “When you walked in the front door, there was MARCH 2011 99

Designer Lisa Ficarra Shepherd designed all the draperies and bedding in cotton and linen, with touches of rattan, sisal and wicker.

a closet. That’s the last thing we needed in Florida. We were able to maximize the space for daily living.” Lisa Ficarra Shepherd, a designer recommended by the unit’s remodeler, BCB Homes, was able to create more closet space in the master bedroom by taking out the closet in the front hallway, and add space to the bedrooms by redesigning hallways. “We added and moved walls, enclosed the lanai and designed the ceilings,” Shepherd says. Storage was added with custom-designed builtins and accessories, like a round wicker coffee table with seating stored underneath. “They wanted aged, beachy and casual,” Shepherd says, noting that woven and raffia blinds, whitewashed planking, and the use of cream, white and linen hues and natural fibers add a casual touch. Elegance was added with fine materials, including the master shower made from slabs of Calcutta marble, pecky cypress ceiling beams, Ficks Reed barstools and pieces by David Francis Furniture.

The enclosed lanai, with its custom sisal rug, plush lounge chairs and stunning views, is where Larry Kent spends most of his time.

“The view is spectacular. You can see the Gulf from virtually every room—that’s rare. It's simple, comfortable, beachy.” Personal touches include paintings of Keewaydin Island the Kents brought from their other homes. A beach scene mural in the guest bathroom created by Reagan Geschardt incorporates some personal touches. Shepherd says Larry liked the idea of having some fish hanging as if he had just caught them, and specified which Gulf fish to include. Mary Kent’s initials were incorporated on a beach bag. “Their youngest daughters loved to swim and wore black goggles all the time, so we had a pelican painted on the other side of the wall with black goggles hanging from his beak,” Shepherd says. Kent says he had no problems downsizing from Port Royal, and then again from a three-story villa in the Brittany to make the Shores home his primary Naples residence for three to four months a year. “Port Royal is great,” he says. “If we lived in Naples full-time, we’d probably want to live there. On the beach, it is turnkey. We have far fewer problems coming back and forth. The view is spectacular. You can see the Gulf from virtually every room—that’s rare. It’s simple, comfortable, beachy.” When he’s in Naples and not at the Hideout Golf Club he started with his brother, he’s on the sunny lanai, where cushy twin rattan chairs face the water. “It’s small,” he says. “When you walk in, you are in the whole place. But it’s comfortable, and we enjoy our time there.” ◆

WATCH MEET NAPLES’ NEXT GENERATION OF BRIGHT STARS ON THE HORIZON. PHOTOGRAPHY BY VANESSA ROGERS

The Pianist | Alden Gatt When Alden Gatt was in grade school in Naples, his teacher called his mother and told her he was sneaking into the music room to play the piano. His mother started him off with an electronic piano, but it wasn’t long before she realized he was serious enough to require a serious piano. (He’s had several since.) Gatt graduated with a degree from Eastman School of Music. Currently he’s working as a marketer and business developer for a performing arts venue in Brooklyn; accompanying singers, some of them Metropolitan Opera performers, at a private voice studio; and teaching piano. “I miss performing, so next year I plan to go back to conservatory, with the goal of making a career out of performing and teaching,” he says. CURRENT HOME: Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. Within five minutes’ walk are my gym, the Brooklyn Library, the museum, the park and a thriving food co-op stocked with all-organic products. HIDDEN TALENT: Not a lot of people know that I danced in a Balinese gamelan in college, but there are YouTube videos … TITLE OF LIFE STORY: The twists and switchbacks in my life’s path make it difficult for me to find one unifying label to summarize the whole journey. I’ve always identified with the Wanderer Above a Sea of Fog, a painting by Caspar David Friedrich that asserts the impossibility of absolute knowledge and evokes the terrifying exhilaration of existing in doubt. The Singer | Paige Miles Perhaps Paige Miles honed her vocal skills as a cheerleader for Pop Warner football from ages 5 to 13, and then as team captain of the Community School squad in Naples, the city where she was born and raised by her mother, Naples native Emma Miles. Paige made it to the top 12 performers before being eliminated in American Idol Season 9. She is currently recording her debut EP in Los Angeles with Grammy Awardnominated producer Mack McKinney, which may knock off one of her four goals—the first, of becoming a successful recording artist. Her other goals include opening several animal rescues in Houston and Naples, becoming a successful writer (mostly children’s literature), and healing the world. CURRENT HOME: Los Angeles TITLE OF LIFE STORY: “You Think You Know, But You Have No Idea” SWEETEST PART OF SUCCESS: Being able to do what you love for a living. The Designer | Nina Nguyen Nguyen loved to help her uncle, a goldsmith, in his jewelrycasting foundry in Vietnam, where she grew up. After relocating to the United States, she kept designing as a hobby. In 2004 Nguyen took a life-changing journey to India. After that trip, she decided to change career paths, from the financial industry to starting her own jewelry design firm, Nina Nguyen Designs. This April she will open a showroom in Naples, and plans a flagship store in New York. “I just launched a beautiful collection of druzy and stalactite stone jewelry,” she says. “The preview for this new line at New York Market in January received so many positive reviews and orders from stores and catalog companies.” She is looking to grow her business internationally, attending trade shows in Europe, Japan, Canada and China. SWEETEST PART OF SUCCESS: Success is not about making a lot of money, but being able to do what I love and contribute back to society. IF I WASN’T DOING THIS, I’D BE: A bum, drinking mojitos in Goa, enjoying the sunset and learning how to spin fire. LEARNED THE HARD WAY: I started my business at such a young age (26), I have had to learn so many lessons. Where do I even begin with the mistakes, financial loss and personnel management? I’ve learned that it is never too late to start a business, but it could be too early.

The Athlete | Lucas Wardein This 16-year-old Naples High School student with six state championship titles has been cycling competitively for just five years, but already he has fans. Friends in the area’s cyclist group, Naples Velo, were so impressed by Lucas Wardein’s success riding bikes he cobbled together from parts he gleaned working at a bike store, they helped raise money to win a top-of-theline bike for him. Fellow cyclist and mentor Tish Kelly raised $10,000 for Everyone Rides in order to win a Specialized Tarmac SL3, a bike that replaces the road bike Wardein borrowed from his team. Wardein was at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs training in roller hockey when he saw a bicycle race and decided he’d rather be on two wheels than skates. “I’ve wanted to go to the Olympics since I was six,” he says. “I thought it would be roller hockey at first, but decided I have a better chance at cycling.” CURRENT HOME: Naples, on his bike 15 to 20 hours a week. LEARNED THE HARD WAY: I don’t take advice well sometimes. I’ve learned I definitely can’t do everything myself. Sometimes you do need help. HEAVEN ON EARTH: Eight Tour de France titles, World Championship, garage full of bikes, wife and three kids, and a house in France. Bicycle by Naples Cyclery

The Activist | Laura Germino Since 1991, Laura Germino has been working in Immokalee for the rights of farm workers. As the anti-slavery coordinator for the Coalition of Immokalee Farm Workers, she represented the group in June in Washington, D.C., at the Department of State’s Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Office TIP Heroes. It was the first year the United States was included in the annual TIP report in 10 years, and the first year someone in the nation was recognized for anti-slavery work. “That was an incredible honor, although I received it as the result of group effort,” she says of the award, presented by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “The first year it included the U.S. is acknowledgement that slavery also happens here,” Germino says. The team was recognized for helping more than 1,000 area workers escape forced labor since the early 1990s. The goal of Germino and other activists now is to develop programs that eliminate worker abuse. “We want to get to the point where it doesn’t even take root by eliminating conditions that allow it to survive,” she says. “Forced labor doesn’t take place in healthy work environments.” CURRENT HOME: LaBelle TITLE OF LIFE STORY: My family has said it would be “It’s Not Fair,” something I said when I was a child. I hope it’s still being written. LEARNED THE HARD WAY: The mills of justice grind slowly and very fine. If you keep working and pushing, justice will prevail; it just takes much longer than you’d think.

WEALTH MANAGEMENT & ESTATE PLANNING

DAVID M. JONES CLU, CHFC, AEP DAVID M. JONES & ASSOC. FAMILY WEALTH INSURANCE ADVISORS AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION With access to more than 50 of the nation’s top life insurance companies, David M. Jones has helped people 70 and older save more than $1 billion in estate taxes and preserve their net worth in these areas: • Estate planning. Due nine months after death, the federal estate tax makes liquidity an issue for some families. Properly structured life insurance policies can provide heirs with death-benefit proceeds free from income and estate taxes. Policies may be purchased via tax-free gifts from parents—thus lowering their estate value and reducing the tax due—by an individual or as a less-expensive “survivorship” type that pays off at the second death. • Mortgage protection. With today’s low interest rates, many seniors have taken out mortgages on primary and second homes. Life insurance can cover this debt income and estate tax-free for one’s spouse in case of early death, and pay for the mortgage so beneficiaries can continue ownership of the property. • Wealth transfer. Most retirees are clear on how much it will take to continue their current standard of living. Often, excess cash flow can be used to buy insurance for heirs, guaranteeing a specific payoff at death whether early or beyond life expectancy. The tax-free payout allows for an extremely competitive internal rate of return at death, compared to other investment opportunities. Because premium rates have dropped substantially over the last 20 years, having a professional review an older policy can ensure that your current needs are being met.

LIFE INSURANCE CAN HELP SENIORS REDUCE ESTATE TAXES AND PRESERVE WEALTH FOR THEIR FAMILIES.

Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Nelson’s World Best Money Managers: Performance calculated “net” of all fees and brokerage commissions, inclusive of cash and in U.S. dollars. Results calculated on a minimum asset base of at least $10 million for “traditional” U.S. asset classes (equity, fixed income, balanced accounts) and $1 million for all international and for “alternative” U.S. asset classes. Only categories/time period combinations for which there are at least 21 contenders are published. Barron’s Top 100 Advisors: Rankings based on assets under management, quality of the advisers’ practices and revenue the advisers generate for their firms. Investment performance is not an explicit criterion because many advisers do not have audited results. Barron’s Top 1,000 Advisors (2009): State-by-state ranking. 3,000 filtered nominations from more than 100 investment, insurance, banking and other related independent financial service firms. Factors: Assets under management, revenues, quality of the advisers’ practices and other factors; institutional assets given less weight; portfolio performance excluded. Barron’s Top 1,000 Advisors (2010): Ranking based on data provided by over 4000 of the nation’s most productive advisers. Factors considered: Assets under management, revenues, regulatory record, quality of practice and philanthropic work. Institutional assets were given less weight; portfolio performance not explicit component. Investment and insurance products: NOT FDIC Insured

ART SCENE

SPRING IN THE AIR

Third Street South bursts in a riot of color during Third in Bloom. Reminiscent of the Villages Fleuri in France—towns where architecture, horticulture and landscaping intertwine—Third Street celebrates spring with a week packed with gorgeous flower displays, special menus at local restaurants, window displays, walking tours, lectures and demonstrations. The highlight of the March 17 to 26 event will be Juried Garden Showcases (like this one in 2010 by Crawford Landscaping) in the lot behind Third Street South. The vignettes will be created by leading garden experts from the Naples area, including Crawford, Driftwood Garden Center, Garden District, Goetz + Stropes, O’Donnell Landscape Inc., Golden Gate Nursery and W. Christian Busk Landscape Architects. For information: thirdstreetsouth.com.

MARCH 2011 The Tuohy family

THE TUOHY CHALLENGE The success of The Blind Side, the Oscar-winning movie based on the story of Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy and their family, brought them unexpected celebrity. “We get a lot of credit for adopting a 16-yearold,” Sean says. “All we did was recognize a child with a need. When we recognized the depth of the need, we realized it was on us.” While some say that Baltimore Ravens’ offensive tackle Michael Oher, whom the Tuohys adopted, received all the benefits, Leigh Ann doesn’t see it that way. “We felt we were getting a present every day. We thought we had the easy side. What Michael did was tough.” With the interest in their story, the Tuohys are in demand as speakers, but they must be selective. Supporting Youth Haven, Collier County’s only emergency shelter for abused, neglected and abandoned children at its Home, Hope, Healing luncheon March 10 was an easy choice. “Youth Haven are game changers,” Leigh Ann says. “Those are the organizations we like to be involved with and jump in and get our feet wet. We’re really nothing special. You can change someone’s life. You can do something to help. If you don’t want to get challenged, don’t come.” For information: 239-687-5153.

GOOD DEALER It’s rare for an artist to immortalize an art dealer in his work, but then again, it’s rare for an artist and a dealer to have a relationship that lasts more than 40 years. Naples gallery owner William Meek has been represented in two of Will Barnet’s paintings through the years, once as a dealer and once as a golfer. “Generally, dealers and artists are kept at arm’s length,” Meek says. “He has always liked what we represent.” The characteristic figurative work Barnet has done in the last 40 years, though, will not be showcased March 13 through April 2 in the Harmon-Meek Gallery’s show, which celebrates Barnet’s 100th birthday in May. Instead, Barnet’s rarely seen abstract work from the 1940s and 1950s will be on display, with some pieces never exhibited before, including abstract watercolors created post World War II and prior to 1951. Barnet is expected to travel to Naples for the show’s invitation-only opening March 12. The artist’s work is shown in more than 300 museums, and he will be honored by the National Academy of Design in New York in the fall.

GRAPES AND APES A social event held by the Rotary Club of Naples outgrew the wine department at Wynn’s Market where it was held for four years, and the club has gone ape about it. On March 26, the former social will become a community fundraiser for 750 attendees called the Rotary Evening of Food & Wine at the Naples Zoo: Grapes & Apes. Champagne, wine, gourmet food from Wynn’s Catering and Norman Love chocolates will mix with animal encounters, including the zoo’s giraffes, sunset cruises, a silent auction and a safari raffle to win a chance at a Tauck Tour for two to South Africa with Zoo Director David Tetzlaff, who grew up training and living with big cats. ART CELEBRATION The dedication of the Annunciation of Ave Maria sculpture that now graces the front of the Oratory at Ave Maria is only the beginning of plans for creation of significant religious art for the university. Michael Windfeldt, project manager for the Ave Maria Foundation for the Arts, says talks are under way with artists to create additional pieces for the Oratory’s sanctuary. Glass artist Dale Chihuly is working with the foundation to create a dimensional Rose window for the Oratory. The artistic intent doesn’t end with visual art. Irish composer Patrick Cassidy created an original Grand Mass in G Minor to premier at the foundation’s first annual gala fundraiser in November. The mass was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra in January, and will be performed for the public at the gala. Plans call for additional original works, tours and a PBS special. The dedication of Márton Váró’s sculpture, carved out of Carrara marble, is March 25. A show of Váró’s bronze relief sculptures will be March 24 at Galerie du Soleil in Naples. The Annunciation marks the Archangel Gabriel’s appearance before the Virgin Mary to announce that, with her consent, by the power of the Holy Spirit, she would miraculously conceive the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Gabriel began his proclamation with the words Hail Mary, which in Latin is Ave Maria. This important phrase closely links the Feast of the Annunciation with Ave Maria University (AMU). In 2004 AMU students, faculty, staff and supporters gathered for a special procession through the tomato fields on the site of what would be AMU’s permanent campus. Other events, including the dedication of the Oratory, have been held on the feast day as well. For more information about the sculpture unveiling, call 239-280-2420.

The goal of Imagine Solutions, a thought conference launched by Searching for Solutions Institute in Naples last year, was to spur action that would result in solutions to local and global problems. Following last year’s conference, teams formed to work in four social issue initiatives: energy/environment, education, health, and social entrepreneurship. The 2011 conference March 21 and 22 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples promises discourse on eight critical and social issues from 40 worldclass speakers. Topics include genomics, social entrepreneurs, education, the arts, women and leadership, energy and understanding Islam. The initial idea was that change could begin at home in Southwest Florida, with participants learning, connecting and acting. For the second year, the idea that change begins “at home” has borne out through a number of participants encouraging their children to become part of the conference. Ted Todd, a local State Farm agent, has registered his son Charley, who recently graduated from Stetson University, for the conference, and founder Tom Everist and several other families’ children will attend. “When I was there last year, I took so many notes, and talked to a lot of people,” Todd says. “It helps you be more aware. [My son is] someone going out into the world. It’s a great foundation.” For details, visit ImagineSolutionsConference.com.

GIVING BACK

SMART HEALTH BY CHRISTINA WELLS

Marla and Allen Weiss are self-professed workaholics. Allen is president and CEO of NCH Healthcare System and a member of various state and national health-care committees. Marla has authored eight books and lectures on math education. She works with students, youth charities and schools to combat underperformance in math and assist mathematically gifted children. They approach philanthropy interests with the same energy. The pair contribute to the NCH Healthcare System through major campaigns and the Magnolia Ball. They have supported the Collier County Public Library and Temple Shalom. The Weisses were involved with The Naples Players and the Naples Art Association when the Sugden Community Theatre and The von Liebig Art Center were built. They were major donors for the new health sciences hall named for them at the Collier Campus of Edison State College. The Edison State Nursing School, one component, supplies nurses to NCH and nationwide. They support their alma maters and universities their daughters attended, including Barnard College, Brown University, Brown University Medical School, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Edison State College, Florida Gulf Coast University, La Salle University, Lorenzo Walker Institute of Technology and Rhode Island School of Design. In honor of her father, also a mathematician, Marla donates royalties from her novels School Scandalle and School Scoundrelle for improvement of math education. “We place highest value on gifts that reinforce and add to our two chosen professions, health care and education,” Marla says. “People must be healthy and educated to function well in society. Moreover, we respect organizations that best ensure gifts to initiatives that will continue contributing to societal growth and value.” ◆
