FROM THE PUBLISHER
Philanthropy Defined and Perpetuated T
ROBERT NELSON
he origin of the word “philanthropy” is from the Greek “philanthropia,” meaning “humanity, benevolence,” and in adjective form, “philanthropos,” meaning “loving mankind.” There is a tremendous amount of humanity and benevolence in this community, and that’s one reason Naples is special. There is an abundance of altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement in this city. It takes form as donations of money, property or work. We’re all richer because of it. We’re privileged to be able to do it. And the evidence of its effectiveness is all around us, whether it’s seen on the face of a child, the food on the table at a shelter, the clothes on the back of someone less fortunate, the scholarship giving someone a helping hand, a machine at the hospital, a book on the library shelf or the extension of life from a breakthrough in research. As we celebrate the beginning of another philanthropic “season” in the Charity Register, take a moment to consider how you’re “passing it on.” Not your money or your volunteer time, but your dedication to it. If there are children in your family, think about discussing the importance of philanthropy with them. If they are old enough to have an allowance or a part-time job, consider asking them what causes are important to them and offer to match their contributions in some ratio. Invite them to come along with you when you are volunteering your time or doing some act of benevolence on your own. The power of giving is incredible. We have the opportunity to amplify it by helping others recognize the need, the obligation and the joy of doing what they can. Your dollars and your efforts are important; your impact on those who follow is, too.

PACE CENTER FOR GIRLS Fashionable outings help provide girls and young women with a chance for a brighter future. In August 1,300 local fashionistas gathered at the Waldorf Astoria Naples and the Embassy Suites in Estero for Love That Dress!, an annual fundraising event for PACE Centers of Collier and Lee counties, respectively. The event is billed as “the ultimate feel-good shopping spree.” Thousands of donated new and nearly new dresses and accessories are sold at attractive prices. All money raised each year by this fun girls’ night out are allocated for training, advocacy, education and counseling programs established on behalf of the girls, aged 12 to 18, who attend the Collier day program in Immokalee and the Lee program in Fort Myers. These young women face a variety of challenges—such as domestic violence,
sexual abuse, academic underachievement, substance abuse, trauma, parent death and family history of incarceration. “The event was tremendously successful,” says Nannette Staropoli, the 2012 Love That Dress! Collier chairwoman. “We more than doubled our attendees from the year prior as well as doubled the dollars raised. We are honored and grateful to have overwhelming community support for PACE Collier.” The numbers are significant—the Collier County event, in just its second year, raised $65,000, while 800 attendees at the fourth annual event in Lee brought in $100,000. The PACE formula has attracted favorable notice. The program has been recognized as a “best practices model” by the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Child Welfare League of America, and the National Coun-

cil on Crime and Delinquency. “PACE’s programs for Florida girls have become a national model for results-based intervention,” says Staropoli. EDEN AUTISM SERVICES Art, music and golf offer three wonderful ways to better the lives of children and adults diagnosed with autism, as well as support their families. Approximately one in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. This statistic equates to one percent of the population of children in the United States. Since 1975, Eden Autism Services has offered an extensive range of services to meet the needs of individuals with the disorder, including early intervention, individualized NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

education, employment training and placement, and a comprehensive outreach program for parents and professionals in the autism community. In the past year, three fundraisers have been held on behalf of Eden Autism: the Naples Invitational Art Fest, Alive in the World Concert and First National Bank of the Gulf Coast Charity Golf Tournament. “The more than $150,000 in proceeds generated through these events helps to fund scholarships and our school programs,” says Taire Malloy, director of development at Eden Autism Services. “Our schools provide individualized student curriculums based in the techniques of applied behavior analysis in a low studentto-teacher ratio.” In addition, dollars raised by Art for Autism, a component of the Naples Invitational Art Fest, directly benefit the Camp Eden summer program. “For children with autism, the weeks of 22

summer camp are critical to ensure that they retain the skills learned in the classroom all year,” Malloy says. “The Art Fest silent auction and private donations assist our families by reducing tuition costs and providing much-needed scholarships for the summer.” THE NAPLES PLAYERS Important initiatives of the community theater group’s fundraising efforts are KidzAct and other programs that focus on education. For 10 years, The Naples Players at the Sugden Community Theatre has been home to KidzAct, an innovative children’s program that enrolls 800 young people, 4 to 18, in year-round classes and summer camp. With a philosophy that “no child shall be left behind” because of a family’s financial situation, The Naples Player’s board awards $25,000 in scholarships annually. The number of grant requests has increased notably during the economic downturn. In March, The Naples Players will hold
its first major fundraiser in some years at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club. The organization’s endowment and KidzAct will be the beneficiaries of proceeds generated by the glittering 60th Anniversary Celebration Diamond Jubilee. “The funds raised at this event will help us continue the policy of providing scholarships to needy children,” says Jim Rideoutte, executive director of The Naples Players. The donations culled will also fund a new initiative intended to take theater to those unable to come to it. Arrangements are being made with local schools to host shows in which the homegrown theater troupe produces plays on campus with students as cast and crew. “Most of these young people have no way of getting to the theater,” Rideoutte says. “We feel we need to make every reasonable effort to involve the youth in our community in this art form.”

NAMI OF COLLIER COUNTY INC. A walk in the park, a luncheon—simple things lead to life-saving support for thousands of local people suffering from mental illness who are in great need of help. One in four families in Collier County is affected by mental illness. The spectrum of impact includes schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety/panic disorders, and the childhood disorders of ADD and ADHD. Enter the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Collier County (NAMI). Last year, the organization assisted more than 12,000 people free of charge. “We are able to provide all of our services at no cost due to fundraising efforts from our annual walk held in March and our December luncheon,” says Kathryn Leib-Hunter, executive director, NAMI 24

of Collier County. “These events have allowed us to expand our support groups to include children, adolescents and their parents. Thanks to our partnership with the Naples Children & Education Foundation we are screening more than 1,000 young people annually and helping those who need it navigate the system.” NAMI’s Sarah Ann Drop-In Center is the only place in Collier County for adults with a mental illness to go during the day. The facility provides a safe haven for friendship, socialization, computer access and classes, a hot lunch and ongoing support. It is 100 percent peer run, which means those who work there also have a diagnosis. An average of 400 people attend the center every month. “We are blessed to provide not only

Naples is widely recognized for its monumental philanthropic endeavors. Each year fundraising records are shattered through special events and staggering individual donations. Meet the generous benefactors who were profiled over the Past year in Naples Illustrated.
Janet Cohen Dedicated in January and officially dubbed the Harvey and Janet Cohen Center, the 75,000-square-foot Florida Gulf Coast University student union was funded by a $3 million gift from Janet Cohen in honor of her late husband and their daughter Fran. The Cohens’ generosity also played a significant role in the building of North Collier Hospital. Noted for her straightforward, no-nonsense approach to life and philanthropy, Cohen continues to look for other causes that will be touched by her family’s legacy. Charitable Support: The Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida. Insight: “Caring matters the most,” Cohen says. “It’s not how much money you have, but what you do with it.”
Carol and Patrick Moore The Moores share a deep commitment to Catholic education and service to others. Their beliefs inspired the founding of Royal Palm Academy in 1998. The couple’s passion for religion and giving back to the community enabled them to create this special institution that educates and inspires young people to lead successful and rewarding lives. An Artful Community By Ashley Huntsberry-Lett
Naples Ballet is one group that has signed on with Bayshore CAPA.
The importance of the arts cannot be underestimated. As Swiss composer Ernst Levy said, “Man will begin to recover the moment he takes art as seriously as physics, chemistry or money.” While many local charitable organizations rely on the community to help fund programs vital to physical, mental and economic health, the arts-focused nonprofits must not be overlooked. Consider these laudable groups, which make Naples the cultural jewel it is.
Bayshore CAPA: A Place for Arts to Call Home Over the past decade, three different professional needs assessments of Collier County determined that a lot of nonprofit cultural and performing arts organizations lack adequate facilities for rehearsals, equipment storage and performances. In 2005 a nonprofit organization was created to help fill those needs—the Bayshore Cultural & Performing Arts Center Inc., or CAPA. Its mission: to alleviate the stress on individual arts organizations to raise funds to build their own facilities or secure temporary venues. With a board of directors and leadership council armed 36

with deep arts experience, Bayshore CAPA has worked tirelessly to raise capital for a future home on Bayshore Drive—a 17.5acre site that was officially selected in June last year. Now awaiting county approval of its proposal, the group plans to enlist the help of one of the world’s foremost theater planning and design consultants, Joshua Dachs. Once the multipurpose facility is complete, visual artists, dancers, musicians and music groups will be able to engage in their pursuits free of many of the challenges nonprofits face on their own. To date, 26 arts groups have endorsed the project in writing and seven have made
more specific arrangements for use of the center, including the Naples Concert Band, Naples Orchestra & Chorus, Naples Ballet, Naples Music Makers and Naples Music Club. Besides creating and executing a plan to put a shared roof over the heads of local artists, Bayshore CAPA hosts free and lowcost events throughout the year showcasing Collier County’s wealth of talent. The season’s programs include the Erich Kunzel Concert Series and Jazz in the Park open-air concerts at Sugden Regional Park. Bayshore CAPA’s progress underscores how fundraising and support are key to success. Two events have been scheduled

for 2013 to benefit the building fund, which will help further the cause. The true beauty of Bayshore CAPA’s innovative ventures lies in its “all for one and one for all” approach. Organizations can maximize their resources and share a mutually beneficial headquarters where they can collaborate to promote the arts and educate and entertain. For these small and talented local groups, there’s no place like home. Gulfshore Playhouse: The Play’s the Thing From Broadway hits and Tony Award winners to original theatrical productions, Gulfshore Playhouse offers a compelling spectrum of shows each season featuring Equity actors with professional credits from the Great White Way to film and television. Founded in 2004 by
Kristen Coury, the company has not only upheld its mission to enrich, educate and entertain the people of Naples, it has grown by leaps and bounds, recently adding two shows to round out its season at six productions. And ticket sales have doubled every year for the past five years. The troupe would like to increase seating capacity in its current home, the Norris Center, or even find a new, larger space in Old Naples. With an ever-growing audience, a longer season and new endeavors, ample room is increasingly important. Gulfshore Playhouse’s outreach and education involvement have increased considerably as well. In 2007 it conducted three workshops in local schools. Today the group hosts 100 interactive programs for children, including Art Smart—a
method of teaching kids in grades 2 to 12 core academic concepts with the help of theatrical elements. These classes help kids learn, improve self-esteem and cooperate with peers through creative processes. After-school and summer programs are also available, and grown ups can explore their inner Laurence Olivier or Katharine Hepburn through professionally led workshops and internships. Naples Art Association: Past is Prologue Approaching its sixtieth birthday, the Naples Art Association (NAA) at the von Liebig Art Center has provided Naples with decades of cultural enrichment. Although it began as a humble program for passionate artists to meet and share work, the organization quickly blossomed into the community-minded advocate for the visual arts that it is today. The NAA has always focused on its member artists and their education, but other important priorities include community outreach and public promotion of the arts. Throughout the year, the NAA presents several fine art and craft shows featuring work by local and national artists. The association also developed a program to benefit the kids of Grace Place for Children & Families through which at-risk and impoverished youngsters can explore the world of art and express their creativity.
A budding artist shows off a painting she created as part of the Naples Art Association’s ARTScool summer program.
In addition to educational workshops, the von Liebig Art Center offers constantly changing local and national art exhibitions free to the public. This season, each opening reception for new exhibits will include recognition of different generous donors as a way of thanking them.
The Naples Historical Society preserves and teaches about the area’s past with tours of the Norris Gardens, left, and Historic Palm Cottage, below, along with numerous educational offerings.
Looking towards the future, the NAA is going back to its community-minded roots. A major goal is to expand educational outreach programs and collaborate with Collier County’s public schools with a focus on forging deeper connections with local residents, businesses and artists.

Naples Historical Society: Gold Standard Still basking in the glow of celebrating 50 years of preserving the area’s history, the Naples Historical Society (NHS) has settled into its role as a significant contributor to local cultural enrichment. Among its achievements: the foundation of the Collier County Museum, creation of the Old Naples Historic District, safeguarding Naples’ unique, historical attributes, and restoration of the Historic Palm Cottage and the adjacent Norris Gardens. Docent-guided tours of the oldest house in Naples and its surrounding green space are mainstays of NHS, and the society takes them to the next level by ensuring that guides participate in an active learning process, and tour scripts are updated with newly discovered historical information.

The organization’s most recent and significant undertaking is the development of an extensive archival project including film, tapes, documents, photographs, artwork and various other items related to Naples’ rich history. These materials will be available to members free of charge at viewing stations located in the guesthouse of the Historic Palm Cottage. NHS is also sponsoring the publication of a comprehensive book on the preservation of Naples’ history. Both the new archive project and the book are scheduled for completion by year’s end. 40

TheatreZone: Stage Right During its nearly eight years of staging professional quality plays and musicals, TheatreZone’s (TZ) audience base has steadily grown. The organization has contracted with the Actors’ Equity Association, which ensures a deep, talented pool of cast and crew members. The result is consistently high standards of production for every show. TZ has developed and maintained a prestigious reputation, drawing numerous well-known television and Broadway stars, renowned musicians and other show

business professionals to Naples. Based in the G&L Theatre at the Community School of Naples, TZ has had the honor of hosting world premieres of the shows The Beast of Broadway and Miracle in Rwanda. An exciting, well-rounded sampling of plays and musicals are chosen for the season’s lineup each year, enabling theatergoers to experience many different genres. Thanks to generous contributors, TZ has been able to keep the price of tickets below $50 for the past three years, making high-quality theater affordable for larger audiences. TheatreZone’s future objectives include expansion of its donor base to help bring stage productions to even more people and to produce additional quality shows more frequently. Since Mark Danni created TheatreZone in 2005, it has been committed to bringing top-notch performances to residents of the Naples area, and the undertaking would not have been possible without dedicated benefactors, a passionate board of directors and creative staff. Opera Naples: Aria Listening? Opera Naples (ON) occupies a unique niche in the cultural scene. Few cities of Naples’ size are fortunate enough to have
a permanent, professional opera company. ON stages operas and concerts in various venues around Naples, including the Miromar Design Center, Moorings Presbyterian Church and the Philharmonic Center for the Arts. The company launches its eighth season with Tosca—a nostalgic choice, as this was its premiere opera in 2006. In addition to producing at least three operas annually, ON is dedicated to educating the public and cultivating an interest in this distinctive art form. Each fall, Opera Naples conducts a community tour to various Collier and Lee County schools to introduce opera to students who most likely have never experienced it before.
ON also hosts summer youth camps where children learn and perform operettas, and apprenticeships are offered as well. And the group is the first professional company to offer full-scale opera productions free to students in Southwest Florida. Future goals include expanding the audience and donor base, developing more community outreach activities and finishing the redevelopment of its building on Linwood Avenue. As opera represents the epitome of a patronage art form, ON’s upcoming Great Gatsby-themed gala dinner in March will be a splendid evening that will help the group bring the grandeur of opera to more Southwest Floridians. u NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER

Jenna Bush Hager
Twice as Good Jenna and Barbara Bush share a dedication to helping others. In February, The League Club welcomes Barbara Pierce Bush and Jenna Bush Hager, the daughters of President George W. and Laura Bush, for a unique presentation— “Twin Thoughts: One Message Presented by IberiaBank”—during the club’s annual fundraising luncheon. A series of moderated questions designed to evoke a lively exchange between the twins will be asked during an hour-long discussion. They are each dedicated to humanitarian missions that help the disadvantaged around the world. Barbara, creator of Global Health Corps, and Jenna, a Today show correspondent and chair of a UNICEF group, believe that ideas in action are the best kind. The charismatic siblings aim to fire audiences’ passion to serve and inspire young people to give back. The event benefits The League Club’s Community Trust Fund, which makes grants to Collier and Lee County nonprofits. IberiaBank is the presenting/title sponsor for the February 15 fundraiser. —Christina Wells 42

NCR: How did growing up in the First Family shape you as adults and influence your personal and professional pursuits? Jenna: Barbara and I had the unique experience of being both first grandchildren and first daughters. We were seven when our grandfather was sworn in as the fortyfirst President of the United States and simply enjoyed playing house in the White House. Our dad was sworn in as president when we were 18, and at that time were old enough to understand and fully appreciate the experience. We met amazing people— politicians and philosophers, royalty and heads of state, authors and activists. We also traveled with our parents and were deeply moved by what we saw. Trips to Africa inspired and motivated us to begin working with HIV/AIDS and the rights of women and children worldwide. Barbara: As “older” first daughters, we were in college during my dad’s first term and lived a fairly anonymous life. I traveled with my parents to Africa in 2003 when
Barbara Pierce Bush and mother Laura Bush
they were just launching PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief). We visited a clinic filled with people excited about PEPFAR and the doors that it would open for them. Hundreds of people lined up for the life-saving drugs they needed to live a healthy life. I was stunned at the fact that people were dying of preventable deaths. After meeting so many people who dedicated their lives to health care, I thought that maybe I should, and could, focus on this as well. That visit shaped the course of my career.
We would love to hear the stories behind your philanthropic projects. Why these initiatives and what are your goals for them? B: My 2003 trip to Africa changed my future. I wanted to capitalize on the energy and enthusiasm of young people who can work in the health field, so I founded an organization called Global Health Corps with five partners. We recruit stellar recent college graduates under the age
of 30 and place them in partnerships with health organizations around the world. Our fellows fill gaps within the organizations and, through training and mentorship, leave the fellowship with skills to be change makers in global health. We’ve placed 216 fellows since 2009 and in five years hope to grow to 500. Our goal is to continue bolstering the program and change outcomes in the health field. When the current leaders in the health field retire, we want to make sure the next generation, my generation, is ready to take their place and tackle the issues that need addressing. J: I worked as an intern for UNICEF after college and currently serve as the chair of UNICEF’s Next Generation, which is comprised of a group of young professionals committed to UNICEF’s mission. One of the projects I’m passionate about is “Project Sprinkles: Combating Malnutrition in Guatemala.” The sprinkles resemble a small pack of sugar and can be poured over a meal a day providing the perfect amount of daily nutrients to a child, regardless of the quality or quantity of the meal. I also recently started The Novo Project [a website, thenovoproject.com, that focuses on game changers, influencers and inspiration from everyday life] with my best friend, Mia Baxter. We continually hear stories of amazing people and wanted to create a community where change makers could gather and share ideas.
You have observed human events from a unique position. What takeaway can you share? B: Founding a nonprofit was not something I thought I’d ever do. When we saw the need for an organization like Global Health Corps, and were deciding whether to start it, we realized we would regret it if we didn’t—if we let a good idea that could create solutions to the world’s glob

al health challenges go to waste. That is my advice to your readers—if you have a passion for something, just do it. You can make a difference. J: Throughout my eight months as an intern with UNICEF, I learned that no matter where we live or who we are, people all over the world want pretty much the same things: health, safety and the chance to live,
learn and grow up to be happy adults. If we work together, we can make sure this dream becomes a reality for every child.
Have you been to Naples before? B: We’ve both traveled to Naples, with our family and independently for work. Jenna and I both love Florida and are looking forward to being with you all in February. u NAPLES CHARITY REGISTER
