Perhaps more than ever, this year’s edition of the Naples Charity Register aims to make a difference in our community.

Each year the social season in Naples is different, while in some ways staying very much the same. Calendars become crowded starting in the fall as charities seek the best date for their events.

What’s different from year to year is the creative twist nonprofits apply to their fundraising efforts in trying to increase the dollars raised from previous years through innovations to annual events or by creating new ones. Here are some highlights from the past season, along with insights into what’s on the horizon.

Fresh Faces With annual events, refreshment can come simply from new faces at the helm. Although attendees often appreciate a certain familiarity from year to year, there’s also a benefit to creating some 14

surprises. For many events, the best way to breathe in new life is by changing chairpersons, as each brings his or her own style and ideas.

The Naples Winter Wine Festival has certainly been a great example of that, as each year the chairs take the event’s general format and put their own stamp on it. In 2010, Ambassador Francis and Kathleen Rooney’s chairmanship followed difficult economic times, so they chose to focus on the beneficiaries. Cynthia and Bruce Sherman, co-chairs in 2011, wanted to kick off the festival’s second decade by focusing on fun. Bob and Joan Clifford, chairs for the upcoming festival January 27-29, want to amplify nationwide recognition for the event, which it deserves as the highest grossing wine festival fundraiser in the world. The theme “Believe in the Magic” is sure to foster surprises.

Hats in the Garden has been chaired for the past two years by Vicky Smith and Karen Scott, reaching its pinnacle in 2009 with a fashion show and personal appearance by the dapper Oscar de la Renta, and then last year with the opening of the Garden itself.

Chairs for the event’s first seven years did an excellent job ramping up excitement about the developing Garden by establishing Hats as the opening party for the social season, causing women to plan all year to make a millinery statement at Hats, and luring seasonal residents back to Naples in mid-November. Now Hats will have a new home in the Garden’s event pavilion, along with new ideas from co-chairs Wynnell Schrenk and Kathy Woods. This year’s theme is “Water Lilies,” to celebrate the Water Garden. The nature theme sets the tone for all elements—from the menu, which will include items grown in the Garden, to the speaker, Remco van Vliet, New York City’s premier floral designer and exclusive event designer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Maintaining the fashion component of the past, the featured jewelry is by Yvel, known for creations inspired by nature.

Shelly Stayer, who thought she would ease into the social season after moving to Naples, has taken on the daunting challenge of pushing an already wildly successful event to the next level. The Shelter for Abused Women & Children’s Mending Broken Hearts With Hope luncheon has already earned the distinction of being the biggest-ever charity luncheon at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples with more than 800 in attendance. Stayer knows she needs to continue the event’s successful formula, while at the same time adding

something new. One idea—create a separate companion event just for men involved in The Shelter’s ‘Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence group. The women’s luncheon is February 21, while the new event February 8 is a men-only tailgate party at Old Collier Gulf Club, offering golf, cigars, cocktails, entertainment and a Valentine boutique. Stayer is still working on some surprises that she hopes will bring attendance at the events to 1,200 people—and heightened awareness to The Shelter’s cause.

Raising the Bar Anyone who has sold live auction items knows that quality of the items matters, but so does the quality of the auctioneer.

Scott Robertson, a resident of Southwest Florida and a professional charity auctioneer for 17 years, is called on frequently to bring his expertise to benefit fundraisers. “In the past few years, organizations that never contacted me before started calling and e-mailing, asking for my help,” Robertson says. “When the

economy was strong, they felt a local personality could handle the auctioneering duties—and by not hiring a professional benefit auctioneer, add to their bottom line. Now these organizations realize it pays to hire a professional.”

The Humane Society Naples used Robertson in 2011, raising $170,000 at auction. In previous years, the gala traditionally raised between $100,000 and $120,000. The event also had a new element that added a decided energy. For the first time, guests were allowed to bring their pets.

The Garden of Hope and Courage took the wildly successful biennial Little Black Dress event up a hemline with the introduction of new technology. The Garden was the first area charity to introduce the BidPal Network system, which provides each guest with an iPod programmed to work like eBay, notifying bidders when they are outbid. In 2009, the auction raised $24,000, but with BidPal, a similar auction in 2011 raised $52,000. “With the event’s timeline, there’s so much going on,” says Amy Lane, executive director for the Garden. “We decided to try [BidPal] to better capitalize on the hour and a half we have the ladies [at the Garden] before they go to dinner.” One of the advantages of the system is that it generates an average of nine bids per item. “I do think that’s why we raised more,” Lane says. “The kinds of items were pretty much the same.” As the close of the silent auction approached, bidders stood outside the buses waiting to take them to restaurants to make sure they were not outbid at the last moment.

Based on the number of calls Lane received from other charities about the system, expect to see BidPals become de rigueur for many silent auctions this season.

Lane will also spice up the Garden’s other biennial event, the Naples Music Festival, by making the former street concert more intimate. Instead of closing off Third Street South and building several stages, with both VIP and general admission tickets, the April 1, 2012, event will be held in a private parking lot for VIP guests only. Two country bands will perform for the VIP crowd following dinners at participating Third Street South restaurants.

New Events and Places The American Cancer Society of Naples hasn’t had a formal gala since 2008, relying instead on its successful Relay for Life for major fundraising. In 2011, Donna Solimene decided to revive the gala by creating the Bucket List Bash in honor of her friend Katie Doerr, who lost her battle with cancer. The gala theme was borrowed from the movie The Bucket List, and the committee created bid packages focusing on once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Since it was a new event, no one was sure what to expect, so planners set a goal to raise $150,000. The result was a stunning $340,000 raised. The next one, March 10, 2012, with the theme “The Sky’s the Limit,” will get a lift from new co-chairs and cancer survivors Liz Jessee and Becky Kwedar. The challenge to the committee is to take the Bucket List experiences expressed by guests at the 2011 event and create auction packages to make those wishes possible.

The American Cancer Society Bucket List Bash is planned for the new event pavilion at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples.

The 12,136-square-foot pavilion will be erected in January 2012 on the resort’s Grand Lawn, doubling existing meeting and special events space. The pavilion will accommodate 1,200 people seated theater-style, an 800-guest reception, trade shows, and more. The space will be outfitted with a solid, carpeted floor, air conditioning and heat, chandeliers, and a sound system.

Fashionable Purses Naples has proved to be a stylish place where fashion events support charities. From luncheon personal appearances to auction packages featuring at-home fashion shows or trips to Fashion Week, fashion is a charitable pursuit.

Because of her own philanthropic pursuits, Simone Lutgert was named a Donna Karan Ambassador in celebration of Karan’s twenty-fifth anniversary. Lutgert’s charity of choice, the Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples, benefited from two Donna Karan fundraisers, a luncheon with informal modeling at Saks Fifth Avenue, and a gala event at Lutgert’s home featuring a runway show.

Saks plans two more Karan events this season as part of Lutgert’s relationship, as well as a Graff jewelry event at a private home that was sold at auction at the Seacrest Country Day School gala, a Roberto Coin event in conjunction with the American Cancer Society Bucket List Bash, and the store’s annual runway show to

benefit Saint Ann School Foundation, with a personal appearance by designer Norman Ambrose.

Marissa Hartington of Marissa Collections has given generously to the Naples community for more than 35 years. She took the show on the road in 2011 to help friends from Naples who also have homes in Nashville. Hartington supported the Nashville Symphony by sponsoring the annual Spring Fashion Show in April, which included a Marchesa runway show and designer personal appearance for more than 800 people, a performance by Faith Hill, trunk shows in Nashville and Naples, and other events.

Marilyn Hellman, of Marilyn’s Distinctive European Fashion on Fifth Avenue South, held a three-day shopping event to benefit several charities, including the Collier County Hunger & Homeless Coalition, The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, Naples Equestrian Challenge, Naples Botanical Garden and the Naples Zoo. The event included seminars with animals and a fashionconscious horse. A percentage of sales each day was donated to the charities. Cause & Effect The Naples community has long been known for its commitment to charitable causes.

The glittering annual social scene has its roots in philanthropy. So what happens to the funds raised once a gala evening is over and silent auction bidding has closed?

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB Summer programs are designed to meet the interests of teens.

The Boys & Girls Club reaches out to area teens. Currently, more than 95 percent of the 1,500 children attending the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County are on full or partial scholarships. Proceeds from recent fundraisers, including the Presidential Fashion Show, Fore the Kids Golf Tournament, Secret Santa Tennis Tournament and Annual Crawfish Boil, fund an outreach program intended to increase teen enrollment in summer programs.

“Teenage children in our community are most at risk to fall into the perils of drug abuse, gangs and violence,” says Cormac Giblin, executive director, Boys & Girls Club of Collier County. “The Boys & Girls Club offers a safe, fun place for teens to spend their summer.”

In May 2010, a total of 206 teen club members in sixth grade through high school were surveyed to determine their interests for the summer program schedule. Suggestions included robotics, 18

fashion design, career exploration, community service/volunteering, music, dance, weight training and mural painting. The teens’ suggestions were incorporated into semester-long lesson plans centered on the Boys & Girls Club’s three priority outcomes of increasing academic achievement, promoting healthy lifestyles and building good character and citizenship. For example, in Robot Wars, teens learned how to build remote-control robots while mastering the principles of physics. Fashion Design participants learned about the evolution of fashion from the 1920s to today while being offered related career opportunities. NAPLES CHILDREN & EDUCATION FOUNDATON The Foundation’s lunch boxes of Love launched.

The Naples Children & Education Foundation’s Lunch Boxes of Love program takes a bite out of children’s hunger. The stats are staggering; in Collier County, 24 percent of households with children have food insecurity, a general anxiety about where their next meals will come from. In addition, children make up 49 percent of those who receive food assistance from local food banks.

Enter the NCEF Lunch Boxes of Love hunger initiative, which raised $630,000 through a special auction lot at the 2011 Naples Winter Wine Festival. To get the initiative off the ground quickly and efficiently, NCEF partnered with the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

One month after the festival, using a specially outfitted mobile food pantry, the Harry Chapin Food Bank began weekly deliveries of nutritious food to child-focused agencies in areas with the most underserved and at-risk children. To date, 5,000 children in nearly 2,000 households have received more than 150,000 pounds of healthy foods.

“We expect to provide 500,000 pounds of food and serve more than 20,000 children over the next year,” says NCEF Trustee Karen Scott. “Working with many local nonprofit partners and area schools, together we are making permanent improvements to the food distribution and storage systems.”

The Education FoundatioN A new web portal links the community.

A new Education Foundation of Collier County Web portal links Collier County students to resources. In 2010, Arthrex, CenturyLink and Wells Fargo joined corporate forces to fund an Education Foundation project designed to ensure that all of Collier County’s more than 50,000 students have opportunities to succeed. GetOnTheBus Collier.org is a one-stop, interactive Web portal through which educators, schools, students and families, as well as individuals, businesses and organizations in the community, will be able to work together to provide information and resources to give all students access to educational opportunities. The site is now live, with the interactive functions becoming progressively available during this school year.

“We are so grateful to our corporate partners for investing in this unique tool,” says Susan McManus, president of the Education Foundation. “The more we learn about the opportunities and good work going on both in our community and schools, the better positioned 20

we are to provide all students with the access to opportunities to strengthen their education.”

When all of the profile and interactive functions become available, this resource will allow students and families to access local scholarship and enrichment resources, as well as resources to support college preparation and career exploration. Educators and schools will be able to post classroom grant requests and needs for community volunteers and speakers, as well as access resources for classrooms and students from the local community. Also, individuals, businesses and organizations will be able to connect with school requests to help with volunteer or classroom projects, and post resources to share with schools, along with scholarships and experiential opportunities for students.

The Educator Profile functions are live, and the Community and Student/Family profile functions will become available throughout this year. Complete functionality is anticipated by late spring 2012.

The Immokalee foundation Funding gives Immokalee’s children the opportunity to succeed.

The Immokalee Foundation is building pathways to success.

TIF is devoted to enhancing the lives of Immokalee’s next generation by emphasizing education, vocational and life skills. According to the 2010 Census, more than 80 percent of the children living in Immokalee live at or below the poverty line. Roughly half of the students who enroll in kindergarten will not graduate from high school.

This statistic is changing. As TIF celebrates its twentieth year, the organization works each day with a generation of students committed to their education, determined to give back to their community, and optimistic about their potential to achieve the American Dream.

TIF’s annual Charity Classic Celebration and Inter-Club Challenge and Pro-Am Golf tournaments help fund programs such as Take Stock in Children, College Success, Immokalee Readers and Vocational & Career Success. These initiatives offer students opportunities to grow, learn and advance to educational and profes22

sional heights they never dreamed possible.

The 2010 events raised a record-breaking $1.5 million in revenue for the foundation’s educational programs. More than $100,000 helped 168 children participate in the Immokalee Readers program, a partnership between the public schools and TIF. This after-school program provides 50 teenage tutors for 200 children in the youngest grades, and funds a summer reading program. Approximately $200,000 will send 30 children to a Florida state college for four years. A state match enables every $6,500 donation to cover a student’s full tuition. More than $200,000 was raised for 103 students to lean marketable skills to give them the opportunity for promising careers. More than $65,000 was raised for children to attend summer camp, take local field trips, go on a class trip to Washington, D.C., or attend a professional baseball game.

Super Corporate Philanthropists: Beyond the Check

Arthrex, Conditioned Air, Fifth Third Bank and IberiaBank share a common cultural constant: a commitment to the well-being of their community.

Fifth Third Bank The company has a long-standing history of philanthropic giving; it was the first financial institution to establish a corporate foundation in 1948. In 2010, the Fifth Third Foundation made $2.6 million in grants in Fifth Third Bank’s operational areas.

“Our efforts are centered on the ability to make a positive impact in the communities we serve, but also on individual people,” says David Call, president and CEO, Fifth Third Bank (South Florida). “Financial empowerment programs are a major focus of our mission, in addition to education, health services, community development, and the natural environment.”

In Collier County, the company and its employees collected 5,300 pounds of food and donated $18,500 during the second year of the Fight Hunger, Feed Dreams Food Drive benefitting The Salvation Army. It collected more than $100,000 over six years to support Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities of Southwest Florida’s Pennies From The Heart Campaign.

Fifth Third also sponsored a Back to School Drive over the last two years resulting in the collection of 2,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and more than $23,000 for the education foundations in Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota, Manatee and Palm Beach counties. Other philanthropic endeavors included creating and sponsoring a Coloring Dreams Every Day Contest resulting in 80 Lee and Collier County families enjoying a day at the Naples Zoo, and a beautification project at the David Lawrence Center.

“Fifth Third Bank employees are consistently volunteering their time and talent to causes that are important to them,” Call says. “We have found several ways to have fun with our efforts, including internal challenges and competitions, social events, Dollars for Denim days and more.”

Conditioned Air W. Theodore Etzel III, president/owner of Conditioned Air, believes that businesses have the opportunity to contribute time,

resources, people and money to support organizations that add value and life to their home communities. Etzel’s company exemplifies a philosophy of supporting and then responding to needs demonstrated in the Naples community.

Conditioned Air sponsors educational efforts in public schools by participating in the Education Foundation of Collier County and supports after-school mentoring programs for underprivileged children through Grace Place for Children & Families. Donations come in the form of money, services, goods in kind and time served on committees.

“We’d love to help everyone who approaches us, but that’s not reality,” Etzel says. “Thus, we choose to support several main initiatives and also respond to some that come up during the year.”

In 2010, Conditioned Air reached out to the Stuff a Truck Christmas toy drive, offering support by transporting toys in company vehicles, as well as through staff involvement in the drive.

Arthrex The mission of Arthrex Charitable Giving is to contribute money and assistance locally and internationally to benefit the community and the people within it, as well as Arthrex employees. Philanthropic initiatives focus on four areas: health and wellness, the local community, education and foreign aid. Each month, the Arthrex Charitable Committee meets to review sponsorship requests and makes sure all organizations considered are in line with the mission and values of the company.

Wine Pairing Wine, food and fundraising have poured

millions of dollars into area charities through the Naples Winter Wine Festival and the Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest. To celebrate the success of these festivals, the Naples Charity Register asked the chefs who host these auctions to pair food and wine in creative dishes.

For the first nine Naples Winter Wine Festivals, The Ritz-Carlton brought culinary talent from resorts around the country to prepare food for the auction and post-auction brunch. The 2011 festival featured talent from the Naples resorts and pastry shop. Naples Executive Sous Chef David Codney prepared lamb two ways: rack of lamb with fava beans, Riesling golden beets, cherry tomatoes and Barolo lamb jus; and sous vide lamb cap with Pinot Noir golden chanterelles and Chianti beets with beet foam.

Naples Winter Wine Festival The eleventh annual festival is January 27-29, 2012, and includes vintner dinners, Meet the Kids Day and the Believe in the Magic Auction at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, with food by the Naples Ritz-Carlton culinary teams, a wine down event and celebration brunch. Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest The fourth annual festival is February 24 and 25, 2012, at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club, the National Association of Home Builders 2011 Gold Award Winner for Community of the Year.

Celebrations start with Chef Vintner Dinners at area homes, with the Grand Tasting and Auction the next day to benefit The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and area pediatric education programs. (swflwinefest.org) The culinary team at Miromar Lakes, which hosts the Southwest Florida Wine & Food Fest, creates dishes for Vintner Dinners, as well as for the food tasting and auction. Thomas Pedit, executive chef at Miromar Lakes Beach Club, created porcinidusted filet mignon with Rochioli Pinot Noir and shallot reduction, fireroasted baby peppers and pommes parisienne.

Bedtime Bundles Inc. A nonprofit organization whose mission is to identify the needs of migrant children and provide them with basic necessities. The United Arts Council is designated as the state’s official Local Arts Agency for Collier County. Primary program areas are uniting and promoting the area’s arts and cultural community, and providing arts education to at-risk students.
