100 Car ats of Pure Luxury Only the r arest of diamonds warr ant a name - diamonds of exceptional size, quality and beauty.

This is one of those diamonds. In GIA’s history, very few polished diamonds of gem quality have surpassed the 100-carat mark. Already part of an elite group due to its size, the highly transparent nature of this diamond adds to its rarity. This pure diamond is classified as type IIa which scientifically means it is lacking measurable levels of impurities like nitrogen, thus giving this diamond its pure white color.

This diamond was fashioned into a classic old world cushion cut, with its smaller table and open culet. Its faceting bears resemblance to other worldrenowned diamonds, such as the 45.52 carat Blue Hope Diamond and the 105 carat Koh-I-Nur.

FROM THE EDITOR

Way back in 2000, I was the executive editor of Modern Bride. At the time, I was inundated with real-life wedding stories about things that went kerflooey during the planning phases, bridal showers, bachelor and bachelorette parties, ceremonies, receptions, and honeymoons. A year prior, I was pulling up to the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City on a 102-degree afternoon in mid-July, having just heard the news in the limo on a Lite FM station that John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and her sister, Lauren, had gone missing in a plane off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. I knew that our church had been the site of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’ funeral mass and thought it all a strange coincidence. Walking down the aisle, my dad stepped on the side of my dress and caused me to teeter off balance. I regrouped with a smile and zoned in on Michael waiting for me. During the ceremony, I didn’t notice that the flowers I’d ordered to decorate the aisles and the altar were not there. When we arrived at our reception, and as soon as we opened our limo doors, we saw our friend Nick, who said: “Can you guys believe the news about John John?” I replied: “I know. It’s sad. But let’s not talk about it today.” Thankfully, he was the only person who brought it up. Our reception was a blast and so was our honeymoon, even though we occasionally watched the sad news about the Kennedy plane crash. I couldn’t wait to tear through the photos from the disposable cameras we’d left on the tables (totally dating myself, I know) and the professional ones. Our photographer took about 50 of my grandma smoking cigarettes, drinking her scotch on the rocks, and talking with a mouthful of food. I wasn’t so crazy about those pictures back then, but I cherish them now, as well as all of my wedding moments, both the good and the not so good. That’s the point. No matter how detail-oriented you are or how much thought and effort you put into planning a wedding, some things are out of your control. Pandemic brides, like our cover star Contessa Williams and Christa Hartz (whose wedding we highlight on page 76), know this better than anyone. Both women shared their stories with us for this Weddings Issue, which we packed with ideas and inspiration for bridal gowns, ceremonies, and receptions. We also interviewed local wedding planners for their take on the hottest trends (page 64), the creator of a new Naples balloon business to help add some fun to your next big event (page 25), and some of the most talented floral designers in town to dig up what’s blooming for centerpieces and more (page 28). Last summer, when we committed to doing a weddings-themed issue, none of us knew if it would be appropriate or possible to pull one off. But now, with vaccines becoming widely available and in-love couples forging ahead with modified plans, it feels optimistic and right. The show—or weddings—must go on. We do hope you have a lovely May and June.

INSIDER Q&A

Full-Blown Fabulous More than 23 years ago, Loretta Spezio came to Naples from Rochester, New York, and dug into the community by volunteering to help friends plan events and fundraisers. “I love parties,” Spezio says. “If friends needed planning assistance, I had ideas tucked away that I wasn’t using personally and wanted to share. If I saw something on Instagram or Pinterest, I thought, ‘I could do that.’” Though these projects satisfied her caring heart, her creative and business-minded brain wanted more. Last summer, while hunkered down at home during the pandemic, Spezio decided to launch Ascent by Loretta, a custom boutique balloon business. From baby gender reveals to marriage proposals and weddings, Spezio has been able to share her passion while enhancing the aesthetics of her clients’ biggest life moments. On the next page, she shares a glimpse into her entrepreneurial journey. (instagram.com/ ascent.byloretta) —Andrea Stehle

INSIDER Full-Blown Fabulous CONT. NI: What do you love about what you do? Spezio: There’s something magical about balloons. Young or old, you’re amazed with the colors, textures, sizes, and designs. The world always seems brighter when you’ve made something. Plus, I’m able to do this safely without contact. What is your creative process like? Typically, through Instagram or word of mouth, I’m contacted about an idea. I can usually start two or three days before an event because I like to have the balloons fresh at your home. They start to break down if you start any earlier, and I want to deliver the freshest product. I prioritize contactless delivery to keep the clients and myself safe. Do you have a niche or specialty? All of my balloons are air-filled. I really don’t use helium for environmental reasons. I might add a couple, but it’s not my thing. There is a certain design aspect I stick to: artistic and organic. I use only quality latex balloons that are biodegradable and compostable. They are not plastic, and foil balloons can be reused or shredded for confetti.

Can you describe your favorite design? At Halloween, I did a life-size Harry Potter balloon. I’ve done 6-foot ice cream cones. At Christmas, I stuffed Elves on a Shelf inside clear balloons and customized them with the children’s names. It’s all been about making it fun and whimsical. What are some current trends you’re seeing? I have many orders for high school graduations in the colors of the college they’re going to. I am customizing balloons with school logos, names, and special phrases. People love the new larger balloons and organic designs because balloons sometimes have a mind of their own. I’m seeing a lot of free-flowing pastels and earth tones, along with

dried flower accents. Sage green is popular. I have a color called “empower-mint” that is gorgeous. A lot of rose gold for twenty-first birthdays. Since people are spending much more time at home, colors that match their interior are in demand. Is there a trick to creating custom colors? I can do so by double stuffing and putting one darker colored balloon inside a lighter color. It creates just the right shade. How is this venture rewarding? I’ve been amazed at responses to the balloons and realized I was onto something. This has been a way of making people smile and feel happy, while being therapeutic for me.

REVVED UP for Real Estate

When you meet Kacie Kalb around town with her two young daughters in tow, you may never guess that she is also a boxing and motorcycle enthusiast. There are many sides to this married mom, including real estate professional. Kalb, a sales associate at Premier Sotheby’s International Realty in Old Naples, often teams up on deals From above: The with her husband, Michael, a fellow Kalb family; Kacie sales associate. The Kalbs moved Kalb on her motorcycle. to Naples more than two years ago after stints in Park City, Utah, and Los Cabos, Mexico, where Michael worked in sales at high-end resorts. Kalb and her husband grew up in military families and are accustomed to moving around, but now that their daughters are settled in The Community School, they plan to stay put. “I was surprised at how many younger families there are in town,” Kalb says. “When you tell people you’re moving to Naples, they don’t immediately

26

think of younger people or activities for the kids. But we love C’mon, the water park, and the zoo.” Kalb has worked in real estate for 15 years and credits her longevity and growth to the professional balance she shares with Michael. “We have different strengths,” Kalb says. “He’s great at leadership and sales, and I’m the organizer. ... I tell our clients how it’s going to go and what the process looks like to help them understand what’s going to happen. It’s how I show compassion during difficult life changes like buying a first home.” Although it didn’t take long for the Kalbs to embrace Naples’ outdoor amenities, she does have one wish that would improve her professional and personal life. “I do hope the real estate market evens out a bit to where we can get more people to list their homes and have more options for buyers. I’m looking for a home to be in full-time because I’m renting in Talis Park. A lot of families are in the same boat, trying to find the right home.” Then again, she’s not sure why people would want to leave Naples. “I’ve been to a lot of places, and there aren’t many like Naples.” —Christina Cush

TRADITIONS

You’re INVITED

Located on Fifth Avenue South, Arabesque of Naples is a fine stationer and gift shop celebrating its twenty-first year in Naples. From parties to weddings, the company specializes in exquisite invitations, working with local brides as well as those from around the world. They have built long-standing relationships in the foil and letterpress industry and are the preferred vendor for The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. With COVID restrictions loosening, Arabesque owner Sheryl Sashin says she’s receiving invitation requests for more than standard Saturday weddings. As venues open up, couples are scrambling to rebook delayed events, which means more weekday ceremonies—and more invitations to send out. “Mostly we are doing classic with a modern twist,” says Sashin, who adds that young brides are loving letterpress. She notes a trend in combinations of letterpress and engraving, as well as beveled or colored edges and folds with foil-printed pockets, often with a pattern. Despite the rise in digital correspondence, Sashin believes that nothing compares to a mailed invitation. “The physical invitation tells your guests that you care about them. It sets the tone for the entire event. It’s somewhere you want to be because it’s fabulous.” (arabesqueofnaples.com) —Mackenzie Griffith

RUFINO HERNANDEZ, GARDEN DISTRICT At the beginning of COVID-19, Hernandez says it felt like 300 bridal parties were competing to reschedule dates. In response, couples became more flexible in considering Friday night rather than Saturday weddings. Hernandez has noticed that younger brides have gravitated toward earthy green elements, whereas more mature brides are interested in large flower arrangements. Hernandez likes to add details like custom monogram napkins, charger plates, and glassware to tie in with the florals. While future weddings are trending toward ornate, early 2021 weddings have felt intimate, like a gorgeous dinner party ripe with close friends and relatives. “We’re not doing the big numbers, but we’re still doing beautiful productions,” Hernandez says. (gardendistrictnaples.com)

MICHAEL LONGO, NAPLES FLORAL DESIGN This company normally decorates 100 weddings a year, but with the pandemic striking in early 2020, that number dwindled to only 15 last year. With the increase of intimate weddings, brides have opted for verdant alternatives like eucalyptus, succulents, and Italian ruscus, instead of cascading bridal bouquets, Longo says. Along with greener arrangements, many couples have simplified their decorations—think: ivory columns adorned with roses on the beach. Longo predicts that brides will soon be able to schedule the larger receptions they’ve long dreamt of. “There’s a light at the end of the tunnel,” he adds. (naplesfloral.com)

Bouquet by Naples Floral Design

SEAN STEVENSON, KALEIDOSCOPE FLORAL Stevenson’s floral designs resemble the Dutch masters’ still-life paintings and draw inspiration from wabi-sabi, the Japanese theory of embracing the perfectly imperfect. He finds beauty in the unmanicured look and says his free-flowing arrangements often evoke tears of joy. For a recent 12-person wedding, he wrapped vines of blush roses, tart bougainvillea, and citrus fruits around a tent, embracing a Florida flair. With less funds directed to large venues and food services, several couples allocated money to designing lush wonderlands. Stevenson forecasts that dried and preserved florals will carry into the 2022 wedding season. “I like creating a beautiful atmosphere,” he says. “It’s rare to be in a profession where you can have a positive impact.” (kaleidoscopefloral.com) —Kalia Richardson

What’s in a NAME? On a perfect plot of land in Southeast Naples sits a new home with the most charming title By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Keith Isaac

039_ABODE_0521.indd 39

Sidney Hubschman, the president and owner of Wyands Building Corporation, was ready for a new project and had somewhat of an idea of how it should look on the inside. But when he stopped in to Expressions in Design & Model Furniture Outlet one day, he discovered the exact aesthetic he wanted for his latest development, Seahorse Cottages. This spot is also where he met interior designer and Expressions president Diane Oldfin, whom he clicked with creatively. “We are both family-owned and -operated companies in Naples and work exclusively in the Naples area—not big Fortune 500 companies—and we jelled,” says Oldfin. “When I went to look at the cottage, NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2021

The outdoor living area and swimming pool are visible from the entrance and great room (above). The foyer (left) has an entry cabinet and area for storing grab-andgo necessities like hats and leashes.

I loved it and knew I would be in my element designing it.” The spacious, airy, 2,400-square-foot model home is a modern take on coastal cottage style. Upon entering the three-bedroom residence, one can see across the main floor and all the way out to the lush outdoor living area and stunning pool. To further enhance the home’s casually elegant feel, Oldfin selected a traditional beachy color palette of gray and white with multiple shades of blue. Artwork was procured from local artisans and the designer’s shop. “The home is very sophisticated and still very tropical with a lot of chic touches,” Oldfin describes. “It’s so big—if it were too white, it would be too much.” Completely open, the foyer features a rustic, distressed entry cabinet with a mirror feathered with thin wood pieces. A welcoming bench and row of hooks against the shiplap wall is the perfect spot to store hats, beach items, and leashes for furry family members. The gray wood-look ceramic tile plank flooring, which runs throughout the home, is gently infused with taupe and white. 40 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Clockwise from left: Main living area and kitchen; outdoor swimming pool; spacious master suite with a view of the pool; master bathroom with semienclosed shower and dressing table.

In the large great room, a tongue-and-groove ceiling escalates the home’s coastal appeal. Sheer panels flanking the sliding glass doors frame the view while softening the living area. “The home has a nice, eclectic look and an organic feeling of nature with all the stone and woods going on,” Oldfin says. “It is not matchy-matchy.” Patterned upholstery on a metal-framed armchair offers a visual counterpoint to the love seat and sofa covered in a neutral performance fabric. Travertine tops on the end tables and coffee table are timeless. “I did not want glass tables because the room is large and didn’t need them,” Oldfin explains. “In a smaller room, I would have used glass. From a practical standpoint, glass tables show all the dust.” Mirrored circles on the 80-inch-long TV credenza break up the great room’s many right angles. Overhead, a spherical chandelier bound in metal and driftwood adds a modern touch. From the ceiling to the floor, the designer notes that a lot of thought went into this space. “The rug is shaggy and feels wonderful under your feet. In big, open rooms like this one, sound also becomes an issue. A rug like this will absorb a lot of it.” In the kitchen, steel-finished pendants with grainy wood caps nod to the iconic cowbell. Adjacent to the refrigerator is a huge walk-in butler’s pantry housing one of two wine coolers (the other is in the outdoor kitchen). “The kitchen is so large you could have four to six people working in it and not get in each other’s way,” Oldfin says. Two swivel barstools and three under-the-counter stools, clad in a performance fabric and resting on wood frames in a driftwood finish, provide ample seating at the quartzite countertop. The stone backsplash also makes quite the statement. Moving on to the generously sized master suite, natural feather wreaths over the king bed and a gnarled wood mirror over the chest of drawers continue the home’s organic feel. Circular lamps on the nightstands break up the headboard’s linear lines. Fulfilling a fashionista’s dream, two large walk-in closets create the ultimate

luxury of ample storage for two people. Semi-enclosed, the shower in the master bath is roomy enough for a bench. A dressing table alongside the floating vanity is a posh touch. Both guest bedrooms are en suite. Echoing the home’s casual but elevated style, the queen bedroom pairs a carved-wood headboard and matching bedside tables with a calming gray-blue accent wall. A push button under both bed tables turns on a night light. Stacked turtles on the lamps rest on Lucite bases.

In the room with twin beds, a wood frame outlines the soft fabric headboards. A nubby rug mixed with hues of blue, gray, and white is situated between the beds. Framed paintings of sea fans on the blue headboard wall emphasize the coastal cottage design. Outside, blue and teal tiles on the privacy pool wall create a showstopper in the living area, which also has a summer kitchen. “I totally enjoyed this project,” concludes Oldfin. “It is open and flows from the moment you enter the foyer. It is beautiful.” «

WANDERLUST

Under the HAWAIIAN SUN

From the Big Island to Lanai, delight in Hawaii’s top island-chic accommodations and experiential adventures By Paul Rubio DISCOVER THE RENEWED MAUNA LANI, AUBERGE RESORTS COLLECTION Following a $200-million renovation and rebranding, the grand dame of the Big Island, Mauna Lani, re-emerges as the latest addition to

047_NI_ESCAPE_0521.indd 47

the Auberge Resorts Collection. Cast across 32 coastal acres in Kalahuipua'a, a sacred space of wide beaches, fishponds, and lush gardens once reserved for Hawaiian royalty, the reimagined resort exudes an understated contemporary

style that heightens the splendor of its historysteeped grounds and builds upon its former open-air design. The resort wows at first sight. A linear entrance framed by elaborate wood paneling and NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2021

whimsical sofa swings leads to a design-forward six-story atrium. At the base shines a single reflection pond, artistically embellished with palm trees, wood slats, and hand-carved outrigger canoes. Vegetation cloaks eco-chic nooks kitted out with sectionals and rockers, accented by floral fabrics and wall paintings. The organic aesthetic extends to the resort’s 333 guestrooms and suites, all of which are draped in earthy tones and textures to recall sweeping mountain or ocean vistas. Refreshed amenities at Mauna Lani also capitalize on Kalahuipua'a’s striking environs. A trio of swimming pools overlook either the Kohola Coast or the ancient saltwater fishponds. A full-service beach setup graces a sandy strip bordered by black lava formations. Facing the Pacific, HaLani restaurant serves locally inspired

breakfasts; think Kona coffee and ube (purple yam) pancakes with griddled pineapple and roasted coconut. Neighboring Ha Bar and Grill and the Surf Shack are two barefoot spots for tossing back a few Lani Tais, the resort’s spin on the Mai Tai. Come late afternoon, oceanfront CanoeHouse offers the island’s most memorable dining experience: a front-row seat to the Big Island’s pastel sunsets paired with elevated Hawaiian cuisine. Noted restaurateur power couple Matt and Yuka Raso’s locavore concept consummates a foodie fantasy. Diners can expect island produce and ocean-to-table assets over dishes like Kahuku corn “ribs,” grilled Big Island hearts of palm, and whole Keahole lobster basted with miso butter. When staying at the Mauna Lani, take advantage of fresh programming spotlighting local culture, folklore, and pride. On an early morning paddle, witness the sun’s ascent over Mauna Kea volcano while learning about Polynesian voyaging and ancestral ties to the land and sea. Go back in time to Kalahuipua'a circa 250 BC with in-house historian Daniel Akaka. Hawaiian Islands, this 4,028-square-mile ecological marvel boasts dramatic landscapes spanning disparate climate zones—from wet tropical and dry temperate, to arid desert and polar tundra—and constitutes nearly 63 percent of the state’s landmass. Shaped from five shield volcanoes of different ages, the Big Island’s topography shifts from steam plumes and molten lava to fertile mountains and valleys underscored by towering waterfalls. It’s a mind-blowing natural phenomenon that’s impossible to grasp—unless hovering above it. On the Big Island Spectacular with Waterfall Landing tour from Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, soar to sights inaccessible by road and zoom out on the island’s volcanic fury and mist-shrouded mountain magic. Beyond the nonstop drone-like vantages, look forward to a descent into the fiery activity of Kilauea volcano. Then, brace for an epic landing at the base of a waterfall hidden among the Kohala Mountains, before rising above its 1,000-foot counterparts that cascade into the

(bluehawaiian.com) GO OFF THE GRID AT FOUR SEASONS RESORT LANAI With a resident population around 3,100 and an area of 140.5 square miles, Lanai is Hawaii’s smallest inhabited island—and about as farflung as it gets within the United States. In this remote land, a sole coastal property houses a self-contained world of luxury and serves as an access point to Lanai’s culture and geography. Located along the island’s southernmost reaches near the white sand beach of Hulopo'e Bay, the open-air Four Seasons Resort Lanai features everything one could desire from an upscale tropical vacation. A total of 213 guest rooms—brimming with personality thanks to designer Todd-Avery Lenahan of TAL Studio— are spread throughout heavily landscaped acreage in multiple low-rise structures. The

heart of the resort is a lagoon-style pool overlooking Pacific Ocean blues. Oversized daybeds and cabana cocoons are tiered along the hillside, maximizing privacy. Close by is the Retreat, an adults-only pool and lounge encircled by lava-rock grottos and a waterfall. Big-deal names headline the restaurant offerings, including farm-to-table Malibu Farm (which services poolside food and beverage) and iconic Japanese sensation Nobu. There’s also the fabulous Hawanawana Spa and daily complimentary wellness programs, including restorative morning yoga on the beach. This excess may not sound very off the grid, but that’s where the activities center comes in. Explore Lanai’s interior by horseback or venture through the forest on a guided off-road Polaris tour. Rent a house Jeep and choose your own adventure across endless dirt roads and windswept rocky terrain, likely without encountering another human the entire time; along the journey, discover petroglyphs, storied places, and secluded beaches. ESCAPE TRAVEL JOURNAL

A Naples resident since 2016, when his job moved him and his family from Massachusetts, Felipe Pereira is an outgoing internal audit manager who volunteers as the international relations director for the Brazilian Federation of American Football. He uses his marketing savvy locally through a social media campaign, Live with Felipe, where he spotlights Naples-area business owners. Currently working for Generali, a large insurance company based in Italy, he audits six North American locations and assists in Brazil, where he was born. Over the course of his career, which launched in 2006, he says, “I have traveled to over 30 countries, some for work and some for pleasure.” A devoted family man to wife and high school sweetheart Keriann and their two young kids, Mila and Julian, Pereira appreciates the local lifestyle. “Naples has the perfect combination of everything that I need—weather, beautiful beaches, a calmer way of living,” he says. This globetrotter’s last flight was in March 2020, and his first international trip will be to Paris, for work. He also plans to visit Hamilton, Ontario, in November for the Canadian Football League Grey Cup (their version of the Super Bowl). —Christina Cush

NI: Did you and your family take any pandemic road trips? Pereira: We did a day trip to the Miami Zoo, which was a lot of fun. Where have you been that you would like to revisit? My last semester in college, I studied in Sydney, Australia, and lived there for about six months. The place is beautiful, the people are nice, and I had a great time there. Also, I spent one weekend in Rome during a work trip. Walking around Rome, there’s so much history that you get wowed everywhere you look. I want to revisit and spend time at the Vatican.

Clockwise from top: Lisbon, Portugal; Egyptian pyramids; the Fullerton Bay Hotel; St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

Is there a city you believe to be underrated? One city that I have been to over a dozen times is Lisbon, Portugal. The history, the people, the food‚—it does not get the attention it deserves. Many people travel to Paris, London, Barcelona, but forget Lisbon. It’s a welcoming city, deep in history and delicious food. What’s on your travel bucket list? Egypt, Morocco, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Japan are at the top. What’s your next stop in the U.S.? I’ve visited 40 states, but New Orleans, Louisiana, and Nashville, Tennessee, are interesting. I have heard positive things about New Orleans, a city rich in culture

52

and excellent food. Nashville, if you enjoy country music as much as I do, is the place. Have you gone on a foodie trip? Going back to Portugal, two of my cousins joined me for a five-day trip based on a list of restaurants and sightseeing places created by a resident co-worker. The list suggested small local restaurants and what dishes to eat. There were a lot of cod dishes, and it was the best week of eating I have had. Do you have a favorite hotel? The Fullerton Bay Hotel in Singapore. This five-star hotel is beautiful and has an awesome infinity pool by the Singapore River and amazing views of the city skyline. It used to be the General Postal Office Building and was redeveloped to be a state-ofthe-art hotel. Is there a spa you’d recommend? I was in Cavan, about 75 miles from Dublin, Ireland, staying at a four-star hotel called the Farnham Estate Spa and Golf Resort. It was in the green and peaceful countryside. They had an amazing spa, which is wellknown in Europe. What are your travel essentials? I always have a Gillette Mach 5 razor to shave my head and look fresh, Beats headphones, a few football jerseys from teams around the world, Calvin Klein cologne, and workout gear.

Instant KARMA

With its stunning design—and nontrivial $60,000 price cut—Karma Automotive’s new GS-6 is HARD TO RESIST By Howard Walker Forget that this curvy, sinewy-bodied Karma is a plug-in hybrid. Or that there’s a fully electric version around the corner. Or that its dashboard can be made from timber salvaged from California wildfires. No, what will have your head rotating like the gal in The Exorcist is the car’s breathtaking shape. The most beautiful vehicle in the world? This is surely one of them. Maybe it’s all those rollercoaster swoops and sweeps over the giant 22-inch wheels. Or that raked-back windshield or ski-slope-like rear screen. Or the way the body looks like it’s been stretched like a dollop of Play-Doh. Remember, this is a car that’s almost as long as a BMW 7 Series but as low as a Porsche 911. Gaze at it in profile and it resembles a hip-high Italian supercar—with four doors and a trunk. But first, a little history lesson. Back in 2011, the LA-based Danish car-designer-turned-entrepreneur Henrik Fisker began building his 54

Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid. Before the company went belly-up in 2013, he’d made around 2,450 cars. Enter the Chinese Wanxiang Group, which snapped up the assets, kept the gorgeous design, and renamed the car the Karma Revero. The corporation started producing the modified version at a new factory in Moreno Valley, California, in 2016. Alas, a crazy-ambitious $130,000plus price tag, a punishing safety recall, and constant funding challenges meant the car never really gained traction—or sales. Fast-forward to 2021 and all has changed. After a $100 million cash infusion last summer, a solid business plan, and a ramp-up in dealers—we now have enthusiastic Karma retailers in Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Miami Beach, and Naples—Karma is back. Arguably the biggest news is the smarter pricing. The newly launched Karma GS-6 plug-in hybrid has a starting sticker of $85,700. That’s down

The Right FORMULA Formula Boats’ SENSATIONAL new 53-foot 500 SSC family cruiser debuts Mercury’s 600-hp V-12 Verado outboard By Howard Walker The ghost of Don Aronow must be smiling at the awe-inspiring sight of Formula Boats’ newest flagship, the 53-foot 500 Super Sport Crossover, spearing across the water at an insane 60-plus mph. Prior to creating such iconic brands as Donzi, Cigarette, and Magnum out of his gritty Thunderboat Row factory on 188th Street in North Miami, Aronow—the undisputed king of go-fast boats—founded Formula Marine in 1962. He sold the company two years later, but not before his groundbreaking 23-foot needle-nosed Formula 233 had dominated the Florida powerboat circuit, winning the 56

grueling Miami-Nassau and Miami-Bimini offshore races. Aronow lived and breathed high horsepower, so the mere sight of this new $2.8 million Formula 500 SSC would have had him salivating. That’s because hanging off the back of this sleek, stylish, XXL-sized bowrider is a quartet of 600-hp Mercury Verado V-12s. The 500 SSC has the distinction of being one of the first boats to not only be designed around these truly revolutionary outboards, but to offer them at all. These V-12s boast two-speed automatic transmission and a steerable gearcase—the en-

gine itself doesn’t turn, just the lower section. Also impressive is that the engine is made to run 200 hours between oil changes and routine servicing, as well as a staggering 1,000 hours (or five years, whichever comes first) before more in-depth maintenance is required. No wonder they each come with an eye-watering $77,000 price tag: They’re a head-turning addition to a boat that already turns heads. “Super Sport Crossover” is a fitting description for this multitasking powerboat. It’s part

Formula calls the concept SmartZone; here it totals 40 linear feet of cockpit on one continuous level. The area under that vast hardtop is especially great. To open it, either power back the glass roof or lower the vertical glass sections between the cabin and the rear seating/eating area. And did I mention that the push of a button levitates a 65-inch flat-screen TV out of a cabinet? It’s ideal for watching the game or an after-dinner movie at anchor. While that huge rear swim platform (which totals 71 square feet) kind of looks like an afterthought, it does give easy access to and from the water. It also provides a place to stow a paddleboard or two—or a spot to simply stand and gaze at those mighty Verado V-12s. Stepping through the 500’s slide-open windshield leads you into the party-perfect bow area. There’s room for a crowd of 10 on

DREAMS DO COME TRUE LONGTIME SWEETHEARTS CONTESSA AND ETHAN WILLIAMS TIED THE KNOT WITH A RELAXED YET REGAL ELEGANCE BEFITTING THE BRIDE’S NAME By Christina Cush Photography by Michelle Gonzalez

Naples locals Contessa and Ethan Williams decided upon the White Orchid at Oasis in Fort Myers for their wedding ceremony and reception, citing the location's water views as a top draw. 58

O

n a stunning November afternoon in Southwest Florida, Contessa Gilman walked down the aisle and took her groom’s breath away. “I thought, ‘Whoa, she’s gorgeous,’” recalls Ethan Williams, who first met Contessa while they were both in high school in small-town Kentucky. Ever patient, Ethan waited to date her until she was ready to graduate. But by then, in 2015, Contessa was committed to studying community health and biology at Florida Gulf Coast University. Though they were young, their love survived the long distance, eventually pulling Ethan to move to the Naples area to be closer to Contessa. He wasn’t the only one who saw the appeal of her new surroundings, as her parents and siblings relocated to Naples, too.

The bridal parties included family and friends, with Contessa's sister serving as maid of honor and Ethan's brother as best man. For her big day, Contessa donned a gown by Milla Nova.

The couple wed in front of a floraldraped hoop. Script Me Pretty created the signage, and Niche Event Rentals and Plithos Rentals provided the rentals.

After completing an emergency medicine rotation at NCH and wrapping up her physician’s assistant coursework in August, Contessa hopes to land a job in Naples. Ethan, meanwhile, is balancing a full-time job with the United States Postal Service with taking classes at Florida SouthWestern State College to earn a business management degree, so he can advance to a managerial role. They are both working hard and dreaming big. For a few sweet moments during their wedding weekend, the couple escaped their responsibilities and busy lives to celebrate at the White Orchid at Oasis in Fort Myers. “We chose that location for the beautiful water background,” says Contessa. “I also wanted grass, greenery, and a tropical environment. That’s why 60 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

I went for a neutral color palette.” Contessa spent nine months researching and planning her wedding, all with the help of her mother, Amy Gilman, a Naples-based realtor. Eventually, Contessa caved in and hired a month of coordination services with Mostly Becky to assist with the last-minute details and styling. “I didn’t want to be a bride and a planner on the day,” she says. The ceremony unfolded in a quiet, private setting, like the couple wanted. “We just had our family there,” Contessa notes. “We enjoyed everything outside. We love the weather here, which played a huge role in the wedding.” Immediately after they exchanged vows, Ethan and Contessa had a moment to themselves to take pictures in front of the ceremony arch. “Then everyone greeted us,” Ethan re-

calls. “We felt all of the love. It was very emotional.” The theme of the wedding, according to the bride, was California meets Bali with a bohemian feel. “We wanted to keep it elegant with whites and neutrals, and not overdo it with boho elements,” she explains. Ethan’s interests were reflected in the big day, too. “Ethan is a musician and can play every instrument under the sun,” says Contessa. “We incorporated his love of music in special details like our guest book, which was near a record player.” The two of them were represented together in their reception tables, which they named after the islands they love in Southwest Florida. “We sat at Lovers Key,” Contessa adds. Their small invite list included family from Kentucky, friends from FGCU, and loved ones from as far as Washington, Ohio, and Alaska. “Thirty people weren’t comfortable coming,” Contessa says. 62

Contessa embraced a very organic, neutral color palette for the reception decor. Signature Florals put together all of the bouquets and flower arrangements, which included orchids, dried palms, dried ruscus, pampas grass, and white garden roses that were opened by hand to create a wide, romantic effect.

Contessa and Ethan shared their first dance as husband and wife to “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran. Guests were seated at tables named after the couple’s favorite local islands, such as Keewaydin.

“As soon as our videographer got us the video, we posted it and sent it out immediately.” After they danced the night away and said goodbye to every last guest, the couple met up with friends to rehash the celebration. “We were on a high,” Contessa recalls. “Ethan and I wanted to do it all over again. It was awesome.” Like many newlyweds, when the bride and groom woke up the next day, they had hundreds of notifications on their phones from wellwishers. Before the wedding, they took a mini moon in the Keys, where they fished and Jet Skied. They’re now enjoying their happily ever after living in Southwest Florida and working in Naples, where they savor time with family and friends. They also love kayaking on the Imperial River, beach bumming at Gordon’s Pass, and walking around Freedom Park. For this youthful, nature-appreciating pair, the adventure has only just begun. «

Expert: Lisa Radlovacki, Lisa London Weddings & Events This luxury event production company specializes in exclusive soirees of all sizes and styles. Director Lisa Radlovacki believes weddings should look beautiful, sound unbelievable, taste divine, and leave the couple and their guests feeling like they’ve been part of something fantastic. Now Trends: With the lockdowns and uncertainty in other states, Radlovacki says she’s quickly filling slots for 2022 in Southwest Florida. She has also noticed many weddings using more architectural structures, including hexagonal arbors and oversized wooden gazebos. Next Trends: Radlovacki predicts that contrasting textures, such as combinations of dark woods with light, airy fabrics, are here to stay. Farmhouse tables, for example, can be draped with soft linens, multicolored florals, and candles running down the center—a change from formal white coverings with a centerpiece. Additionally, she says, large hanging lanterns and flowers will elevate the feel. “I think the real trend going forward is to have the wedding you want and not the wedding you think you should have,” she notes. With 12 years of wedding planning and design experience in the Naples area, creative director and consultant Stephanie Meiser strives to incorporate innovative ideas into her events, while maintaining the beauty of tradition. Now Trends: Meiser notes that pandemic weddings mean downsizing, but not compromising on the emotions of the event. This can lead to a guest list of 200 whittled to “an intimate dinner party for 50 of your closest friends,” resulting in opportunities for wonderful conversations and moments. To Meiser, this lets you “truly make your wedding about you, not what you saw on Pinterest.” Next Trends: Couples are thinking outside the box, Meiser says, in terms of venues—renting a private home or a local restaurant—and being more creative with colors. While weddings were previously filled with white and green, now “they’re not afraid to add color,” including muted, natural tones or colored candles instead of traditional white. She has also seen a shift toward wedding favors that people can eat or use. For one wedding, flower bulbs with guests’ names tied to them served both as escort cards and favors that attendees could take home and plant. (alongcamestephanie.com)

Expert: Kara Cardinal, KC Weddings & Events Naples-based KC Weddings & Events specializes in complete event design and wedding planning. Lead planner and designer Kara Cardinal gets to know each couple in order to create a memorable event with intention and authenticity. Now Trends: Even before the pandemic, Cardinal noticed wedding sizes decreasing, as millennials shied away from inviting distant cousins or their parents’ friends. As couples focus on providing incredible ambience and entertainment, elements like live music are making a comeback. “You can actually watch someone perform their craft in front of you,” she explains. “That enhances the guest experience.” Next Trends: Dessert tables also cater to attendees. Couples still have a cake, Cardinal notes, but it’s often only two tiers. Slices are put out, but everyone can also choose a cookie, cupcake, cannoli, or another option from the dessert table and get back to dancing. To-go bags allow desserts to serve double duty as wedding favors. “The guests still feel like they’re getting something extra,” she says. (swflweddingplanners.com) NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Expert: Carrie Darling, Carrie Darling Events Carrie Darling Events has provided whimsical concepts and one-of-a-kind experiences for 14 years. The wedding and event planning company custom builds its own decor items, bringing magical designs to life. Now Trends: Lead designer Carrie Darling has seen more brides and grooms embracing unique ceremony layouts, such as circular configurations with the couple in the center. “It’s an easy way to switch up your wedding,” she explains. She adds that specialty entertainment is popular, like live dancers that make a surprise entrance to start the party. “Everyone’s looking

for a new ‘wow’ and new things to do.” Next Trends: With couples increasingly focused on wanting to be good hosts, she says they’ve been using more welcome displays. These can include hydration stations with flavored water or creative shoe valets where guests can drop off their footwear during beach weddings (a tiki hut with baskets, for example, or a more elegant version with a shoe rack and chandelier). “These are little experiences that guests get to enjoy beforehand,” Darling says. “Couples get excited to use them because they’re very inviting.” (carriedarlingevents.com) NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2021

Expert: Paige Simpson, No Worries Weddings Paige Simpson started No Worries Weddings 12 years ago after spending 15 years in catering and event planning for high-end resorts. She uses her vendor relationships to offer a stress-free experience while tailoring weddings to each couple. Now Trends: Simpson explains that using local vendors for things like catering and flowers is popular, as couples aim to support small businesses that may have been hurt over the past year. The pandemic has also led to more intimate weddings that allow brides and grooms to spend more time with their family and friends. Next Trends: Simpson says many couples are using the extra budget from having a smaller wedding to throw fullblown welcome parties the night before. Guests are “traveling and spending a lot of money to be there,” she notes, “so couples are spending money on them that night.” She adds that next-day brunches are also becoming more prevalent and offer even more time to visit and reminisce with loved ones. “Family means more now that everybody’s been through a major pandemic.” (mynoworriesweddings.com)

Experts: Stephanie and Ali Antoniou, Stali Events Sisters and Stali Events cofounders Stephanie and Ali Antoniou aim to give clients a hands-on experience with a fresh perspective. They personalize and customize every detail to suit clients. Now Trends: This team has noticed couples seeking a party feel over a traditional sit-down event. This is reflected in one popular decor choice for weddings and bridal events: balloons. “They are so fun and playful, and they add elegance and whimsy,” says Stephanie. While photobooths have been a longtime wedding feature, Ali says, a balloon-covered backdrop gives guests a spot to take snapshots for social media. Next Trends: Grooms are getting into fashion, using more color, such as green or maroon, over traditional grays and blues. “They really want to shine on their day, which is fun,” says Stephanie. Your wedding “is for you and not for anyone else,” she adds. “Our happiest couples just do what they want.” (stalievents.com) «

Nothing could stop Naples natives Christa and Cort Hartz from enjoying a pictureperfect wedding at a beloved beachfront locale By Katie Hendrick Vincent Photography by Michelle Gonzalez

Christa and Cort Hartz exchanged vows and celebrated with a small group at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club.

O

ne day, Christa Hartz will tell her grandkids about how she was a “pandemic bride” who got married in November 2020. Although the world was topsy-turvy, her love for her husband, Cortland “Cort” Hartz, never wavered. “I spent most of Spring 2020 having a glass of wine while watching the nightly news, worrying what was going to happen with our wedding,” says Christa, who works at Arthrex as an organizational specialist in development and is pursuing a master’s degree at Florida International University. “There were times I thought we’d have to just do it at the courthouse.”

Christa wore a Martina Liana mermaid gown. Floral arrangements included Quicksand roses, white hydrangeas, pampas grass, eucalyptus, and white phalaenopsis orchids.

Christa’s doubts grew after two friends postponed their celebrations, so she looked into rescheduling for 2021. “We were shocked how quickly the 2021 calendar booked up,” she says. “Most available dates were on Monday through Wednesday.” After much deliberation, the couple decided that their outdoor venue and modest guest list minimized COVID-19 risks, so they forged ahead. The honeymoon was another story. With their dream destination—Greece—unfeasible, they opted for an extended stay at their wedding hotel instead. In the days leading up to the big event, Christa obsessively tracked Hurricane Eta, which ravaged Central America before turning toward Florida. “I never considered that a storm was a realistic threat so late in the season,” she says. Fortunately, Eta downgraded to a tropical storm and then bypassed Collier County. When Christa and Cort married on the lawn at The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club on November 13, it was a clear-skied, mid-70s evening. The venue—the site of countless dates for brunch or drinks, as well as Cort’s August 2019 proposal—held tremendous sentiment. “It’s our favorite place to hang out and relax,” says Cort, a physical therapist at Millennium Physician Group in Fort Myers. Christa chose earth tones to play up the hotel’s fantastic sunsets. Reception tables were draped in terra-cotta linens and topped with gold chargers, with alternating high and low centerpieces of Quicksand roses, white hydrangeas, pampas grass, eucalyptus, and white phalae78

nopsis orchids. Her bridesmaids wore rose-gold sequined gowns that flickered in the sun and, later, beneath strings of twinkle lights. Hip-high linear arrangements that complemented her centerpieces lined the aisle and led to an understated gold hoop with groupings of orchids and pampas grass that served as the backdrop to the couple’s vows. A dramatic cascade, her bouquet dazzled with plump white peonies and a blush king protea. While Cort donned a traditional black tuxedo, Christa enchanted in an off-the-shoulder, honey-colored Martina Liana mermaid gown with a lace overlay and a striking train. Hidden beneath her hem was a piece of her mother’s wedding dress. She wore her hair in loose curls and kept her makeup neutral, with the exception of a golden smoky eye.

Against an ocean backdrop, Christa and Cort wed in front of a hoop draped in orchids and pampas grass.

3/26/21 1:40 PM

Of the couple’s 50 guests, most were family members. “Everyone present was someone close to us, a relative or a friend who feels like family,” Christa notes. Both the bride and groom named “close ties with family” as an endearing trait in the other that convinced them they had found their match. “Family is everything to us,” Cort says. “Our family is responsible for making us a couple.” Despite growing up in the same city and attending the same college (Florida Gulf Coast University), Christa and Cort may have never met had her mother and his aunt not set them up on a blind date. Once Christa relented to meet Cort in January 2018, she immediately felt relaxed. “We just meshed,” she says. “It’s always felt like an easy relationship.”

The intimate reception took place outside, with the space decked out in hues that echoed the gorgeous sunset.

Several relatives were in the bridal party. Christa’s sister-in-law, Holly Strickland, was her matron of honor, while her nephew, Maverick Strickland, was the ring bearer. Cort’s father, Michael Hartz, was his best man. After exchanging their vows, the couple concluded the ceremony with a unique ritual: placing letters to each other and a bottle of their favorite wine inside a keepsake box. “The goal is to wait until our five-year anniversary, then open it, enjoy some wine, and read these romantic notes,” Christa explains. While the contents of those letters remain secret, the deep love fortifying this union is as lovely as a Naples sunset. «

“If you like cakes from Costco or Publix, you probably won’t like mine,” says Jeri Suzette, a former Wall Street asset management specialist who abandoned finance to pursue her childhood passion. After taking classes and doing an internship with The Cake Boss (“my style is totally different from his, but I learned a lot”), she set up shop in Manhattan’s Battery Park neighborhood. Using 90 percent organic ingredients and original recipes, she’s now reinventing her business, Cake Suzette, in Southwest Florida and delivers throughout the area to hotels, restaurants, and private customers. “Buttercream and flowers are my specialties,” she says. “I’ve developed a niche that no one else has, and I’m thrilled that people love the cakes I’m baking.” (cakesuzette.com) NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2021

Sails Hoists a Major Talent Naples is now the home of Florida’s only three-star Michelin chef. Eli Kaimeh, who spent seven years as chef de cuisine at Thomas Keller’s celebrated Per Se in Manhattan, arrived in February to oversee culinary operations for the Sails restaurant group—soon to include The Butcher and Sava. The collaboration is the result of a seven-year relationship between Kaimeh and the owners of Sails, Veljko Pavicevic and Corinne Ryan. “Per Se had a great impact on Corinne and me,” says Pavicevic. “We went a number of times, and each visit exceeded our expectations. Eli wasn’t ready to leave New York when we first met, but we stayed in touch with him because we realized he was the person we wanted.”

The beaches of Southwest Florida are ideal for a special-occasion picnic—except you may not feel like transporting tables, chairs, place settings, food, and drinks to the destination. Kayse Duffy and Monette Everett have a solution for that. Their company, Coast & Mingle, provides full-service luxury picnics for a variety of occasions. “The Gulf Coast is dotted with beautiful, uncrowded white sand beaches,” says Everett. “When hospitality shut down during the pandemic, we thought it was a great opportunity to provide a service to people who wanted to socialize safely.” Celebratory options include birthdays, anniversaries, bridal showers, and corporate events; the pair also caters picnics in private homes and parks. Clients choose among three packages, depending on the number of guests, and have the ability to fully customize their event with tents, fresh flowers, and selfie mirrors. Coast & Mingle will supply grazing boxes and pizza from local vendors or pick up food from your favorite restaurant and deliver to the picnic. “We source our supplies from local, family-owned businesses,” says Duffy. “We also try to support the community. At the end of each month, we donate a percentage of our profits to charities that are important to us, such as Christie’s Cause in Estero, which works to eradicate child exploitation and sex trafficking.” As the business grows, they visualize expanding into luxury event planning, but beach picnics remain the focus for now. “It’s something new to the area,” says Everett, “and most people have never seen anything like it.” (coastandmingle.com) 94

SAILS RESTAURANT

PICNIC PERFECTION Kaimeh will work with Darren Veilleux, executive chef at Sails, to help elevate the restaurant to a higher level. He will also be responsible for opening the two new restaurants planned for this year. The Butcher will be an upscale steak house located in the former Agave space, while the less formal and more reasonably priced Sava will be adjacent to Sails. Pavicevic describes the atmosphere as “warm and cozy, like stepping into a French farmhouse 100 years ago.” The connection between Kaimeh and Sails is based on a shared passion for excellence. “The most remarkable thing about Eli is his consistency,” says Pavicevic. “He has the ability to execute on the highest level, and he raises the energy of everyone around him.” (sailsrestaurants.com)

Sukie’s Wine Shop has added another dining option to The Village Shops on Venetian Bay with the debut of its outdoor wine bar and patio. Located adjacent to the main entrance of Bayside Seafood Grill & Bar, the elegant space opens at noon and uses Bayside’s kitchen and menus. It provides eight stools at the bar and additional seating at a combination of regular and high-top tables. “We wanted to make use of an underutilized space,” says Caroline Ridgway, marketing director for her family’s restaurant group. “Shoppers now have another option for a quick lunch or a snack and glass of wine.” Bayside’s award-winning menu, designed by executive chef Able Gonzalez, features classic fare such as salads and sandwiches, along with interesting touches like Cuban black bean soup and

Artisan Sidekicks for Wine Jill Backman is a renaissance woman: an art historian, a renovator of historic homes, and a passionate devotee of chocolate, cheese, and other artisan foods. Last year, she joined her husband, Bruce Nichols, at The Wine Store and established Jill’s Provisions, a curated portfolio of gourmet items designed to accompany wine purchases. “I wanted to better understand Bruce’s love of wine,” she explains. “To find a way to relate to what he was doing, I started with chocolate. Like wine, chocolate is a fermented product with a long history.” An extension course in chocolate Backman took at Harvard ignited her interest. She followed that up by attending two cheese camps, at Murray’s and Jasper Hill Farm. During the past year she has added charcuterie boards, Castelvetrano olives, and bread from New York’s Sullivan Street Bakery. To her, the background and culture of an item are just as important as the product itself. “When I buy chocolate, I always look for people who are part of

SAVOR the State Discover FLORIDA’S homegrown craft distillers

By Mark Spivak If you want to visit a distillery, there’s no need to hop on a plane to Louisville and drive across the Bourbon Trail. Around 40 distillers currently belong to the Florida Craft Spirits Association, and they produce everything from rum and vodka made with local ingredients to aged expressions of whiskey. Here, we present a subjective list of the best. Florida Farm Distillers: Marti and Dick Waters craft their awardwinning Palm Ridge Reserve whiskey on a small cattle farm outside Umatilla. This bourbon-style spirit is handmade in small quantities, aged in charred-oak barrels, and bottled at 90 proof (“whiskey the way it’s supposed to be,” according to Dick). Despite the low production, Palm Ridge Reserve is available at select Florida retailers. (palmridgereserve.com) Manifest Distilling: Located in downtown Jacksonville’s Sports District, Manifest is a full-scale organic distillery producing regular and barreled gin, potato and Florida citrus vodka, rye whiskey, coffee liqueur, and fernet. The facility includes a bar and tasting room. Tours are offered, as well as a monthly Discovery Series that allows consumers to get hands-on experience in the blending and formulation of spirits. Kozuba & Sons Distillery: Zbigniew Kozuba began making cordials and single malts in the Polish village of Jablonka. In 2014, he relocated the business to St. Petersburg with his sons, Matthias and Jacob. The family still makes cordials (ratafia, triple sec, quince, and cranberry) along with vodka, straight bourbon, and high-wheat rye whiskeys. Visitors may observe the production of spirits in the copper stills brought from Poland. (kozubadistillery.com) Loggerhead Distillery: Named for Florida’s endangered sea turtle species, this Sanford distillery draws on local sugarcane, citrus, grains, and botanicals to create three varieties of moonshine, regular and sweet tea vodka, a key lime gin, bourbon, rum, and single-malt whiskey. Visitors are welcome every afternoon except Monday. (loggerheaddistillery.com) St. Augustine Distillery: Situated in a historic FPL ice plant originally built in 1907, St. Augustine Distillery is committed to community preservation as well as sustainability: They source Florida-grown agricultural products to make their vodka, gin, bourbon, and pot-distilled rum. Free tours and tastings are available, and the distillery is a stop on St. Augustine’s Old Town Trolley Tours. (staugustinedistillery.com)

Steel Tie Spirits Company: The Etheridge family has lived in West Palm Beach since the late 1800s and helped lay the tracks next to the distillery (hence the name). Steel Tie’s non-GMO, pesticide-free, and locally sourced spirits include vodka and three Black Coral rums, all made in a still hand-built by Ben Etheridge. (steeltiespirits.com) Tarpon Springs Distillery: Where else can you find ouzo but in the largest community of Greek Americans in the country? In addition to Papou’s Ouzo, the distillery produces Gramling Woods High Rye Moonshine, Anclote Very Small Batch Gin, and Claresso, an espresso-based spirit. (tarponspringsdistillery.net) Wicked Dolphin: Founded in 2012 in Cape Coral, a few miles from the sugarcane fields, Wicked Dolphin distills local ingredients in southern Florida’s largest copper pot still. Their Reserve rums (spiced, silver, and gold) are aged for a minimum of three years in barrels that once held Kentucky bourbon. Free distillery tours are offered by reservation. (wickeddolphinrum.com) Winter Park Distilling Company: Hometown natives Paul Twyford and Andrew Asher make everything from vodka and white corn whiskey to beer-barrel-aged rum and Florida’s first single-barrel bourbon. Tours may be reserved on the website, and aficionados can mash bourbon with the distiller and “adopt” their own five-gallon barrel, whose contents are bottled for them when ready. WELLNESS

Backyard Parks Exploring the outdoors is the perfect activity this summer. And you don’t have to go far—Naples is within easy driving distance of several state and national parks. “If you’re into hiking, swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, or any other outdoor recreation, there are opportunities for them here,” says Alex Levine, education manager at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in Naples. Spending time outdoors is also good for your health. A study published in Landscape and Urban Planning indicated that walking in natural areas decreased anxiety and rumination. Other research has found that being in nature is associated with

103_BALANCE_0521.indd 103

improved health and increased levels of connectivity in general. Levine adds that health perks come from both “green spaces” and “blue spaces,” so you’ll benefit whether you visit an inland forest or the ocean. One great way to elevate your nature excursions is through journaling. You can purchase a dedicated journal from My Bucket Journals (mybucketjournals.com), complete with lists of parks, as well as places to record information, plan your visit, and reflect on your experience. Read on for Levine’s recommendations for parks and preserves in Southwest Florida.

Explore the outdoors by traversing Southwest Florida’s numerous mangrove-lined canals or visiting amazing natural areas such as the Everglades (left) and Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park (below).

WESTERN EVERGLADES Levine says two incredible nearby areas are Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park and Big Cypress National Preserve in the western Everglades. “There’s nothing else like it, not just in Florida, but on the planet,” he notes. GULF COAST On the coast, he suggests visiting the Ten Thousand Islands and J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel. Besides being great spots for birders, “it’s just amazing to paddle among the mangroves,” he says. “It’s so peaceful and beautiful.” NAPLES If you haven’t been to Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, add it to your list. “The swimming there is beautiful, and inevitably you see dolphins and all types of birds,” says Levine. He adds that the park, which is just north of Naples, is often overlooked by tourists, making it an even more special place to escape into nature.

PLAN AHEAD

FISCAL FITNESS A new business on Fifth Avenue South looks to improve well-being beyond just your body. Health & Wealth Co. is “a wellness place where you can come and get a physical checkup and then get a financial checkup,” says coowner Eric Marvin, a certified financial planner. Offerings include vitamin IV drips, supplements, hearing loss treatments, and massage, as well as financial planning and asset management. Marvin notes that IV drips have been very popular so far, with people looking for a vitamin C immune boost before traveling. These services are important, he explains, because they help you be proactive with your health. Noting that many people spend years prioritizing saving money over preserving their health, he says: “At some point, you may have to take that nest egg and spend it down because you neglected your health along the way.” A quote on the wall summarizes the business’s mantra: “You can’t enjoy wealth if you’re not in good health.” (hwconaples.com)

RELATIONSHIPS

CONVERSATIONAL SKILLS Strong relationships are vital for reducing loneliness and depression—and they’ve become more important than ever during the pandemic. Local author Daniel Solin’s recent book, Ask: How to Relate to Anyone, explores the science behind forging deeper connections and offers evidence-backed tips to help improve relationships. The key takeaway, Solin says, is shifting from sharing information to eliciting it instead. He references studies showing that when people talk, particularly about themselves, the brain’s prefrontal cortex lights up to indicate pleasurable activity. He explains that when you ask someone about themselves, show genuine interest, and ask relevant follow-up questions, that person will feel good about themselves and about you. “People are interested in telling you their story,” he adds. “They’re not that interested in hearing your story.” This works for family bonds or longtime friends, too. When a bestie or your spouse asks about your day, Solin recommends answering briefly then asking them in return, being sure to follow up and show true interest in their responses. “I don’t want you to be the most interesting person in the room; I’d like you to be the most interested,” he says. “You’re going to find that your relationship instantly transforms, even for people you’ve known for many, many years.” (danielsolin.com)

NUTRITION

Red, White, and Blueberries This summer, celebrate your favorite patriotic holidays with a healthy—and delicious—blueberry dessert. This fruit is high in antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. Studies have shown that blueberries can protect against high blood pressure, reduce brain aging, lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, boost immunity, and help prevent cancer. “They’re one of the most nutritious fruits you can eat because of their antioxidant properties,” says Dee Harris, a licensed dietician nutritionist and owner of D-Signed Nutrition in Bonita Springs. While Harris says there’s no health differences between fresh or frozen blueberries, she explains that buying organic avoids pesticides. Try Harris’ healthy blueberry crisp recipe, which brings the fruit to the forefront with minimal added sugar. (d-signednutrition.com)

BETTER BLUEBERRY CRISP Ingredients (serves 2) 2 cups raw blueberries 1/8 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. gluten-free flour 1 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. lemon zest 1/3 cup gluten-free vanilla almond granola 2 tbsp. chopped walnuts Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a small baking dish with coconut oil. Add blueberries. Mix cinnamon, flour, and sugar together then add to blueberries. Add lemon zest and toss to coat. Crush granola in a bag to break up large chunks. Sprinkle on top of berries. Top with walnuts. Bake for 30 minutes, until mixture is bubbling. Serve with a tbsp. of So Delicious Cocowhip coconut cream topping.

FITNESS

Playing in PARADISE The Paradise Coast Sports Complex recently opened in Naples and offers far more than just sports fields. One of the more impressive amenities is a pavilion called The Factory, which includes a fitness court and a running trail with workout stations. An outdoor classroom in the same space is the setting for classes hosted by local fitness professionals, from Zumba to strength training to yoga, with more being added each week. With a paid membership, guests also gain access to an open-air weight room and the MoveStrong obstacle course. This popular feature provides a full-body workout as you swing between rings, climb across nets, jump over barriers, and overcome other obstacles to complete the course. Paired with Southwest Florida’s sunny weather, the area “creates a completely different workout environment than what people are used to,” says Will Spence, the national operations manager at Sports Force Parks, which manages the complex. “It just adds another great option to the fitness community.” (sportsforceparksnaples.com)

WORK HABITS

OUT-OF-HOME OPTIONS Months and months of working from home during the pandemic may be affecting your mental health. Distractions, having children in the house, and juggling several roles at once can lead to stress and anxiety, says Molly Modzelewski, a licensed mental health counselor and co-owner of Serenity Counseling Associates of Naples. Besides the loss of boundaries between work and home, she adds that feeling isolated from coworkers can be another struggle. Those challenges may then affect your performance, potentially leading to depression that further impacts your ability to work.

When your office is closed, coworking spaces can provide a good alternative. One such space in Naples, Collier Capital Club (colliercapitalclub. com), offers memberships for desks in a shared area as well as those for private offices and conference rooms. If you keep working from home, you can still take steps to support your mental health. Modzelewski recommends creating a specific area, whether it be a room or just your desk, that’s only for work. Making a schedule can also help you keep your job separate from your home life. (serenitycounselingfl.com) NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MAY/JUNE 2021 105

Both Jay Baker and Jeanette Montgomery Evert served on the Artis—Naples board, and the museum is named for the Bakers. The work of elongated blown-glass reed forms is now part of the museum’s permanent collection and will remain on display in the Norris Garden. Red Reeds was included in the recent Chihuly exhibit, Dreaming Forms: Chihuly Then and Now, that celebrated the museum’s twentieth anniversary and reopening following an extensive renovation. AMY ART OPENS

«

Artist Amy Moglia Heuerman has opened a local studio and showroom, called Amy Art, on Tenth Street South in the Naples Design District. Heuerman rose to prominence as an illustrator for children’s books, games, puzzles, and toys, all under the umbrella of her Bear Hug Designs company. She moved to Naples in 2013 and today creates large-scale abstract seascapes. Her impact on the Southwest Florida art scene is visible across the area. In addition to painting a 30-foot garden mural in the children’s reading room at Guadalupe Center, she often donates works to nonprofit fundraising auctions and was a featured artist for the 2019 Artis—Naples studio tour. FAVORITE THINGS Cullen Daane grew up in Old Naples, adventured to the International University of Monaco to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration, then later pursued a career in fine jewelry and received a Graduate Gemologist certification from the Gemological Institute of America. In 2009, she launched Pierre & Harry, her own collection that allows her to create beautiful pieces of jewelry and affords her the flexibility to care for her sons Briggs, age 3, and Russell, an infant, and her two dogs, Kramer and Sandy. “My husband, Andrew, and I both grew up here and are grateful to be rearing family here, too,” she says, knowing she’s fortunate to have grandparents close by as well. Daane, who lives in Lake Park, also appreciates the close-knit community in Naples, a place where friends and neighbors rally to help others. “As a cancer survivor, I support and love the work that Cancer Alliance of Naples (CAN) does in our community. I had an 8-month-old when I was diagnosed, and I don’t know what I would have done without childcare help and support from family and friends. I love that CAN helps out people in our community with everyday needs such as childcare, groceries, gas, and household expenses.” Below, Daane’s top spots to…
