We downsized into a fixer-upper in August 2018 and lived there with our three teens and dog during the extensive renovations, much to their dismay.

Michael and I bunked the two girls together in the living room, where they slept on mattresses on the floor, surrounded by giant moving boxes. My son was in an adjacent space with a similar ambience. We stapled painting tarps to the room openings to give them a semblance of privacy. There were lots of huffs and puffs about the situation being annoying—and dusty. Did I mention that the five of us shared one bathroom that didn’t have a door?

To help with school work, we moved all of their desks into a small family room off the kitchen. They tuned each other—and me—out with their headphones and tried to focus. Many of you can relate to this sense of displacement after quarantining shifted us out of traditional offices and into work-from-home zones. Because this space is a new top priority for so many homeowners and buyers, we offer home office design inspiration beginning on page 92.

When it came to the exterior of our renovation project, we took the annoyance to a new level and had the kids help us redo the garden beds. First, we ripped out the overgrown, and in many cases diseased, hedges and shrubs.

The root systems on some of these plants were 30-plus years old and beastly.

This required numerous sweaty weekends filled with pickaxes, chain saws, long garden spades, and Advil—and the aid of a few neighborhood high school football players—to complete. After yanking out a bush, we’d fill the holes in with dirt and rake them smooth, giving us a blank canvas for planting irises, roses, hibiscus, foxtails, lemon trees, and more.

While we were plant scheming, one of our daughters, Remy, got over her negative attitude toward being a worker bee and became a friend of the bees instead. She did her own research and asked if we could designate a portion of the garden to pollinator plants. It’s now a glorious highlight in our yard, bustling with hummingbirds, butterflies, and nectar-seeking bees. I’m sure the gals in the Naples Garden Club, featured in our “Friendship Toast” story on page 64, would approve. In fact, I think local clean water champion and cover guy K.C. Schulberg, profiled by Daphne Nikolopoulos on page 70, would be happy about all my pollinators, too.

The garden overhaul rubbed off on Piper, my older daughter, as well. She is obsessed with house plants and has a nice display in her room at home and in her apartment at the University of Florida (Go Gators!). My son, Thomas, still helps us out by occasionally mowing the lawn and assisting with countless sprinkler tweaks and repairs. And our dog, Tilley, well, she just wants to sniff out lizards under the mulch.

The Mayor of Home

Teresa Heitmann was elected Mayor of Naples on March 17, when the pandemic was starting to reveal its disruptive path.

For Heitmann, who has been involved with the city council since 2008, it’s been anything but politics as usual in Naples, where she has lived for more than 30 years and raised her three children. During her first 100 days in office, her familiarity with local issues was tested beyond her wildest expectations.

“There’s been a pandemic, fires, protests, and floods,” she says.

“It’s been one decision after another. Thank goodness I am spontaneous and don’t shut down when I have to make hard decisions. I have a strong spiritual and centered mind when things are coming at me, like deciding to close the beach.”

Despite the stresses, she wouldn’t change a thing. “My new city manager and I have had a great experience, even in the worst of the craziest times,” Heitmann says. What keeps her grounded, she asserts, is that she has much to accomplish, such as keeping our community green and getting things back to normal. Another motivator is knowing that her sons and daughter, all currently working in Orlando, may come back to Naples to raise their kids. On the next page, Mayor Heitmann shares a glimpse into her domestic bubble and hopes for the future.

NI: What’s the Heitmann household like?

Heitmann: I love animals. Right now, we have two dogs, Heidi and Fergie, but we’ve had up to four—and my son’s cat. Heidi is a white lab and Fergie is a King Charles. We just lost a schnauzer that was the boss of the house, but now it’s Fergie, who demands lap-dog attention. We also have a bird atrium with white doves, canaries, and finches that I put in when we built the house. My therapy is listening to them singing different songs. It’s a beautiful ambience.

Are you a gardener or a home cook?

I love orchids and am always in my yard, until the cane toads come. I’m afraid of them. But, my orchids, I love how they come back every year. I attached them to trees and they make the yard beautiful. I love to cook and entertain friends and family. My ideal is to gather

around a good bottle of wine and make dinner together. I also love to dance in the kitchen to Earth, Wind, and Fire.

How do you think season will go this year?

When I started in 2008 as a council member, we had a big recession, and Naples rebounded quickly. I’m hoping that will happen again.

We are hungry for being social. And in Naples you can meet the most interesting people at cocktail parties and restaurant evenings. Season comes with fury, and there are typically so many activities, I can’t get them all in.

Do you have other mayor friends?

As a council member, I made great friends on the Bonita Springs council, like Martha

Simons and Mayor Peter Simmons. I am friendly with colleagues in Jacksonville, too. We don’t have weekly calls, because I’m so focused on Naples, but I appreciate an exchange of ideas.

Who inspires you?

My dad passed right before I ran for mayor, so it was an interesting way to grieve. He said, “Quitters never win, and winners never quit.” My mom is always upbeat and there for others. She lives in the Georgia mountains and has a boyfriend now, which cracks me up. For the past 20 years, my mother-inlaw, Bernice, has knitted booties for every baby my husband delivered.

Gordon Love and Sharon Bayata got engaged at their gym, with help from coach Justin Wood.

Forget swiping right or left and try sweating instead. Two Naples singles, Sharon Bayata and the aptly named Gordon Love, met while burning calories and taking turns on treadmill 12 at the North Naples Orange Theory Fitness in November 2018.

Love, the owner of Luv-a-Wash car wash in Naples, and Bayata, a paralegal at Long, Murphy & Zung, P.A., who is taking the bar exam this month, spent their first date eating tacos and getting to know one another. They quickly realized how easily the conversation flowed and have been inseparable ever since.

When Love decided to pop the question, in June 2020, he knew the perfect

location: in front of their favorite piece of exercise equipment. Coach Justin Wood was present for the proposal and helped get Bayata to the gym at the odd time. After Love got down on one knee on the treadmill and Bayata said yes, the lovebirds joined their parents and a couple of close friends for dinner, feeling grateful that they could share this special moment with their inner circle despite the pandemic.

“Gordon really made it special that the people who are most important in our lives were able to participate in the day,” says Bayata, who wants to practice family law. Although a wedding date is in flux, these fitness pals know how to deal with things they can’t control while keeping each other motivated to stay healthy.

How did this artsy duo hone in on Naples? “We had a gallery in Juneau that catered to cruise ship passengers,” Burak Bulgen says. “Because of quarantine, that season got cancelled. We came down here this summer because we had customers from Naples who bought our artwork and told us to check out Naples.” After visiting three times, Bulgen was smitten enough to take a chance on a Fifth Avenue South address, right next to Starbucks. “It’s so nice and elegant. It’s our style. I love how people waltz down the street.”

Tamu Cupcakery Monica Tamu Spivey is the smiling face behind Tamu Cupcakery, which made the scrumptious bundt cakes pictured in the “Friendship Toast” outdoor entertaining feature on page 64. Back in June—when Spivey first came onto the NI radar—she was working full-time during the day then turning her attention to the cupcakery at night, operating out of a shared commercial kitchen space that she leased. Though she established her delivery service in 2016 and has long served the Southwest Florida area, this past year has been one of her best yet. Small City CHARM Naples is sandwiched between Reno, Nevada, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, taking second place out of 100 in the Best Small City ranking for cities with populations under 100,000 by bestcities.org. To get some context for this designation, NI spoke with Chris Fair, the president of Resonance Consultancy, which produces these rankings by collecting data that demonstrates 23 characteristics that make cities desirable. For instance, they look at Instagram and Facebook for posts about cities, as well as Yelp and Google reviews about public amenities and things to do.

“This year Naples ranked first for outdoor activities and parks,” Fair says. “Naples has more ‘very goods’ and ‘excellents’ from Trip Advisor, so it’s second for restaurants. It ranked fifth in terms of Google trends score, meaning searches are going up or down for a city, which is the leading indicator of interest in folks living, working, traveling, or doing business in a city.”

Fair says that there is a renewed focus on small cities now that the pandemic has normalized working remotely. “People are looking for alternative places to live with a less dense population, plus they want access to culture, great dining, and outdoor activity,” he notes. “This will serve Naples well in the long-term as a desirable place to live and work remotely or start a business.”

Looking to 2021, Fair says he expects Naples to stay in the top five, with Ashville, North Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia.

This was the mutual motivating philosophy between the property owners and their design team, which included Leslie Gebert, an interior designer at Vogue Interiors. “My clients are active and bought this lot with this

orientation in order to be able to enjoy the outdoor space as much as anything,” says Gebert, who worked with the architects from conception to design all the details.

To accommodate the multiple generations frequenting her clients’ second home, Gebert considered practicality, performance, and poshness. Clad in durable fabrics, the child- and pet-friendly furnishings rest comfortably amid a more formal cream, gold, and silver color scheme.

Splashes of lavender enliven the soft tones. Cheery cream stone flooring running through most of the 6,154-square-foot home exudes sophistication but can also withstand water, should wet grandchildren bound inside from the pool.

Eighteen-foot-high ceilings in the dramatic foyer introduce guests to the four-bedroom home’s elegant transitional style. Especially striking is the Italian mosaic stone rug inlaid with marble and a taupe surround.

Custom molding, sconces, and a mirrored back wall in the niche heighten the space’s formality, which is offset by the inviting bench sheathed in comfy cushions.

In the perfectly balanced living room, crushed lily wallpaper on the fireplace wall is a backdrop for Silver Lily Pond by Tengi Fei. Cream chenille fabric on the oversized, squared sofa is accented with the

same pillow fabrics used for the foyer bench.

Lavender-bordered taupe draperies frame the floor-to-ceiling windows and draw the eye toward the exterior fountain.

Springing to life in the evening, the formal dining area is the most sophisticated space in the house.

The oft-used wood table extends to 120 inches and can seat up to 12 people. The unusually tall, plush chairs—covered in a cream-colored blended fabric in the front and a metallic lavender and gold woven material on the back—encourage diners to linger. “I went with more creams than whites because the homeowner wanted the formal dining space to be soft and calming,” Gebert says. “Metallic threads in many of the fabrics add additional shimmer to the space.” Decorative mirrors and lamps with four glass leaves, each hanging from a peg, artfully break up the 108-inch-long buffet. At night, the sconces in the bar and lighting from the glass wine room increase the dining room’s dramatic look.

Shifting gears back to the family-friendly zones, the kitchen offers two generously sized, casual dining spaces, including a custom breakfast table. The granite island is surrounded by swivel barstools that are ideal for playful grandchildren. Clear pendants provide ample lighting to accommodate the high ceilings and keep things illuminated during that first cup of morning coffee.

When the owners want a private retreat, they escape to the luxurious master bedroom suite, which features plank wood flooring, custom wall details, and burled wood on the headboard and faces of the nightstands.

The decorative mirror and three-tier crystal chandelier add a touch of old Hollywood romance. “The room is very square and the ceilings are

high, so we kept it soft and light,” Gebert says.

The study was built out to make room for the grandchildren and operates as both a kids’ zone and a workplace. The designer looked extensively for an über-comfy, durable, chenille-clad sofa bed. “We wanted the study to do double duty as a place where the grandchildren would feel comfortable and could play board games,” Gebert notes.

Though it gets a lot of traffic when the kids are in town, the chic and sassy powder room sparkles like a jewel box, complete with subtle metallics, dramatic lighting, and a mosaic marble floor inlay.

The family room is the most frequented spot in the house, and it exudes the ease between indoor and outdoor living that the clients so desired. Here, the glove-soft leather sofas look better the more they’re used, and 90-degree pocket sliding doors enable the exterior and interior areas to become one. “The family room is where they live,” says Gebert. “The homeowners are golfers and always want to feel connected to the outdoors.”

The owners’ desire to entertain and their large, very private lot allowed them to build a much grander outdoor living area than originally planned. Natural elements, such as the stacked stone TV wall and vaulted cypress ceiling, integrate the lanai into its lush tropical surroundings. The rug, which boasts a design reminiscent of brushstrokes, pulls the seating space together. The two separate seating configurations feature furniture in weather-resistant materials.

A circular sofa near the pool provides the adults with a place to sit while keeping an eye on children playing in the pool. Shade is available under one of the umbrella-covered lounge chairs facing the double-sided fireplace. How Does Your Garden GROW? When kids get involved in gardening, they reap more than they sow

By Alexa Becker In addition to being a great physical activity, gardening can help children develop a sense of responsibility and a better understanding of the natural world. Michelle DuBois, buyer and manager at Driftwood Garden Center in Naples, started gardening with her kids around age 4. She notes that the benefits are vast, from teaching them about scheduling to instilling a sense of pride at seeing a task through from start to finish. Here, she provides insight into getting started. (driftwoodgardencenter.com) NI: What specific gardening tasks would you recommend for different ages?

DUBOIS: I think the 4-to-6 age range can plant seeds with parents in addition to an occasional watering; you can allot them a certain amount of water to take out and water that plant with. When you get more into the 7-through-10 range, they can actually, with a reminder, go out and water [the plant] and pay attention to how fast it’s growing and how big it’s getting. Then, when they get above 10, they can really get into fruits and vegetables. They can actually see a fruit growing and be able to get a reward by picking it on their own.

How can families adjust their approach to gardening to suit a small space?

You can do a window box. Inside, you can do herbs on a windowsill. An herb that kids would like is spearmint because they eat candies with spearmint in them, so they would recognize it.

Something else would be lavender. Now, they can’t eat lavender, but it has a really pretty smell to it. Kids might also be interested in carnivorous plants like the Venus fly trap, which is a really interesting plant that consumes insects.

Those actually come in little terrariums that kids can put on their windowsill. They can always have a little cactus garden or get a window box to put together a nice mix of indoor plants.

Working with kids to grow herbs, vegetables, and butterfly gardens is a great way to get them involved. They might also be interested in keeping carnivorous plants, like Venus fly traps, in small terrariums.

What are some innovative and fun ways to get kids excited about the planting and gardening process?

I did butterfly gardens with both of my kids; I brought home milkweed that had caterpillars and eggs of caterpillars already on it. They got to see them go from tiny caterpillars into a chrysalis and then hatch into butterflies.

They were wrapped in right from the caterpillar [and] they were interested in keeping that plant alive because it was feeding that caterpillar, which they knew was going to become a butterfly. When you’re dealing with kids, you have to give them something that they will get some reward out of. Just like with vegetables— you could do a tomato or a pepper, and they can see it grow and then eat what it produces.

Which plants are the best for attracting butterflies?

Milkweed is [popular] because it feeds the monarch butterfly. The monarchs lay eggs on it, which turn into caterpillars, and the caterpillars then go and eat the entire plant.

Then, they make a chrysalis on it, so it’s usually the one that everybody wants. There are host plants, and the host plant is what the caterpillars eat and create their chrysalis on, and then there are nectar plants which attract the grown butterflies. Some of the most common host plants are milkweed, passion flowers, and pipe vines. As for the attracters, there are a lot of different ones, like zinnia, gaillardia, and even certain salvias.

As Austin began evolving in earnest in the second half of the 1800s, it grew around three primary institutions: the state capital building, the University of Texas, and The Driskill Hotel (driskillhotel.com). From the impressive columns that greet you at the entrance to the stained-glass dome in the lobby, The Driskill drips with a sense of sophistication that harkens back to its original splendor.

Believe the hype: Chevy’s new mid-engine Corvette is one AMAZING supercar

If you’re a lover of adrenaline-pumping, finger-tingling, punch-in-thesolar-plexus supercars, I have two little words for you: New Corvette.

Just feast your eyes on the thing. It has more visual drama than RuPaul and Lady Gaga combined. More air-gulping intakes than an F-22 Raptor.

More ripped muscles than Sly in his prime. Even while standing still, it looks as if it’s slicing through the atmosphere at 200 mph.

When GM unveiled the eighth-generation ’Vette in Summer 2019, it sent shock waves through the supercar world. This was no mere reiteration of America’s favorite sports car—it was a complete reinvention of the brand. After 66 years of having its engine up front, this new C8 plants its honking 6.2-liter V-8 right behind the driver.

Yet delivering a mid-engine Corvette with almost 500 horsepower, sensational performance, otherworldly handling, and a huge step up in quality wasn’t enough for GM. No, it had to seal the deal with a surprising sticker. In this rarified section of the supercar market, where entry prices start at well above $150,000, a nicely equipped “base” Corvette Stingray costs—drumroll, please—$59,995. There are Chevy pickups that retail for more.

Even when you start adding on options, like the must-have $5,000 Z51 Performance package, with its beefier brakes, freer-breathing exhaust, and MagneRide adaptive suspension, you’re still only looking at around $80,000. This is the best-value supercar money can buy. Period.

Some of you may be wondering why it’s such a big deal to have a Corvette with an engine amidships. It’s all about handling poise and balance.

Whereas the last-generation Corvette C7 was a brutish blunt instrument, this C8 is a marvel of driving sophistication.

How sophisticated? After a week of runs to Trader Joe’s, curve-carving on interstate on-ramps, and foot-to-the-floor thrill rides, I would have happily donated a kidney to have kept this slingshot in my driveway.

This puppy is fast, blisteringly so. With 495 hp, 470 lb-ft of torque, and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic, the rear-drive C8 can catapult off the line and hit 60 mph in a pulmonary-pounding 2.9 seconds. Top speed? That would be 194 mph (or 184 with the Z51 Performance package).

Unlike the previous C7 ’Vette, which had an exhaust that growled like

FINS UP! JIMMY BUFFETT’s new fishing machine is a 1,200-hp power cat designed for speed and comfort

By Howard Walker These days, the Son of a Son of a Sailor (you may know him as Parrothead-in-Chief Jimmy Buffett) really doesn’t like to hang around when he’s heading out to his favorite fishing spots. That’s why the “Margaritaville” chorus leader’s newest boat—a stunning, 42-foot, custom power catamaran dubbed Last Mango and painted Buffett’s favorite shade of seafoam green—can top out at more than 60 mph and cruise effortlessly at 40.

“We have four Yamaha F300 outboards, so 1,200 horsepower in total,” says Vinnie LaSorsa, Buffett’s longtime captain and BFF (Best Fishing Friend). “At 6,000 rpm we’ve seen 61 mph. It’s a fun boat that gets us there and back fast.”

After spending the summer with Mr. B, as LaSorsa calls him, chasing bluefin tuna off Cape Cod and Nantucket, Last Mango will soon be heading down to Florida for the winter, docking at Pompano Beach.

Buffett and LaSorsa are already planning wahoo-fishing excursions to the Bahamas and sailfish hunting in the Keys.

“Since we took delivery, we’ve been using it a lot,” LaSorsa says. “We’ve probably put 400 hours on the engines and covered over 7,000 miles. It’s been all over the place.”

Buffett, who splits his time between homes in Montauk, Palm Beach, and “a little trailer in Malibu,” had pretty specific requirements for his new boat. After years casting a line from his beloved West Palm Beach–built Rybovich Express sportfisher, it seems Mr. B was looking for something that went a little faster, but not at the expense of comfort. He loved the look, performance, and smooth ride of the ultra-sleek, 42-foot power catamaran from South Carolina–based Freeman Boatworks. But, according to LaSorsa, he really wanted a boat with a pilothouse instead of an open center console.

As LaSorsa notes, “Jimmy only had three requests: power-opening windows for the sides of the house, shock-absorbing seats, and a retractable power awning for the cockpit. Oh, and 58 rod holders so you can fish from pretty much anywhere on the boat.”

Why was a pilothouse so important to the 73-year-old singer-songwriter? According to Captain Vinnie it can get cold and foggy up in the Northeast, so it provides a warm retreat. Then in the midday heat of Florida and the Bahamas, it becomes an air-conditioned haven.

As you might expect, Last Mango boasts a very cool sound system.

Designed for the boat by JL Audio, it pumps out Buffett’s favorite playlists through speakers in the cabin, cockpit, bow, and even up on the tower.

“When Mr. B’s on the boat he’s pretty much exclusively at the helm,” adds LaSorsa. “Being behind the wheel for him is the relaxing part.”

Any scary moments while out on the ocean? LaSorsa says he won’t forget a trip to the Bahamas earlier this year, in an area southwest of the Berry Islands known as The Pocket. “We were heading down to the Exumas and got into a heavy southeaster with wind against tide. The seas were a solid 8 to 10 feet. The boat did pretty well, but it was not comfortable. It was the roughest conditions I’ve been in.”

Even when Buffett isn’t wetting a line, it’s rare to see Last Mango tied to the dock. LaSorsa is the founder of Freedom Fighter Outdoors, a charitable organization that works with injured service members. With Buffett’s support and occasional participation, LaSorsa organizes fishing expeditions for wounded veterans. To help raise money, Buffett and LaSorsa created the Last Mango Boatworks website (lastmangoboatworks.com) selling cool Last Mango–logoed apparel, jewelry, and more. «

Sauntering down the cream pavered path toward the purple front door of the Wedgewood blue house with the lime Bahama shutters on an early June morning, you may not hear the gleeful chatting from the back of the house by the patio and pool. There, underneath the shaded canopy, gather four dear friends who devote countless hours to propagating the mission of the Naples Garden Club, which is 250 members strong. This cheerful group of green-thumbed pals is delighted to be together outside, after quarantining at home.

and six grandchildren, she moved to Naples from Barrington, Illinois, 11 years ago, after living here part-time since 1983.

Following the cancelation of the Spring 2020 Naples Flower Show, Brown was eager to reconnect with some of her closest friends from the Garden Club: Terry Aufranc, Abbie Joan Sladick, and Sandy Lasch. At the Brown home on Naples Bay, the ladies enjoyed a simple yet elegant brunch and blooming conversations about their families, club, plants, and gardens.

Even in the heat of summer, Brown spends up to 18 hours a week in her garden, starting the day with an early cup of coffee before putting on her gardening gloves. The garden is her ultimate pride and joy. It “fits the house as it meanders and surprises,” she says. “It’s all about color, texture, and levels, just like our house.”

Four years ago, Brown became a serious student of gardening and started keeping a computer database organized by location and type in order to keep track of when she adds or removes a plant, plus match the botanical name to its common moniker. “I probably have hundreds, approaching a thousand plants,” says Brown. She has many prized plant collections (Cordylines, Crotons, Copperleafs, and Clerodendrons) and plants (Strongylodon macrobotrys, or jade vine, and Montanoa grandiflora, or tree daisy).

The Garden Club gals are quick to notice the plants around the pool and are happy to see the two varieties of hibiscus are thriving. After sipping mimosas on the shaded patio and standing by the bay for a few minutes, the group is hungry and ready to dine on fresh berries and small, glazed bundt cakes from Tamu Cupcakery in Cape Coral. Brown’s clubmates “ooh” and “aah” over the creative table setting, which she curated from her selection of vintage linens and tableware. They can tell that each piece has a story behind it, and they are right: Brown purchased the blue plates from an antique shop; the linen is part of her collection of coverings from the 1940s and ’50s; and the silverware is a vintage set she bought from a dealer 30 years ago. Of course, the women appreciate her decorative use of flowers, too.

Like all good girlfriends do when they are invited to someone’s house, they asked, “What can I bring?” In Lasch’s case, NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2020

G ARDENING DURING COVID-19 HAS BEEN A LIFESAVER. ... I’VE TURNED A COURTYARD INTO A WALLED GARDEN.” —Sandy Lasch she was on buffet-table floral duty. She got the memo on Brown’s blue and white color scheme and chose flowers to complement the palette. With a nod to brunch, she filled the vase with slices of pink grapefruit before adding garden-fresh greens, purple salvia, and orange crossandra. Most prominent are the miniature golden roses edged with red and the purple mini daisies.

Lasch landed in Naples in 2001 from Wisconsin and just relocated with her husband to a condo south of Downtown Naples. As past president of the Garden Club, she keeps busy as Special Installation Chair for the Idea Garden at the Naples Botanical Garden. When they are seated around the brunch table, she tells her friends, “Gardening during COVID-19 has been a lifesaver. I’ve been helping with our condo association landscaping and have turned a courtyard into a walled garden.” Lasch asks the ladies for advice on building a sustainable succulent collection, and Sladick has lots of tips, since she has a robust succulent garden on her property.

A Naples resident for more than 30 years, Sladick lives in the Golden Gate area with her husband and doesn’t miss the traffic in her New Jersey hometown. Though her two children are out exploring the country and enjoying the freedom of their mid-20s, Sladick never slows down, caring for her three dogs and 85-year-old mother-in-law, as well as running her interior design business, Abbie Joan Fine Living. Involved with ticketing for the House & Garden Tour, the club’s primary fundraiser, Sladick laments having to cancel the 2021 event and schemes with the brunch bunch about the germinating alternative­—a vitrual garden tour, an online gift to members and recent tour attendees.

As president-elect of the Garden Club, Aufranc is tasked with propelling it forward after a difficult stretch for many Naples nonprofits and community organizations. Sitting on Brown’s pool deck, she keeps that pressure in the distance and instead smiles about enjoying her first full summer in Naples. Recently, Aufranc and her husband took the plunge to sell their Massachusetts home and live in Naples year-round, moving on from 25 years as part-timers. Being on the Paradise Coast means she’s farther away from her three children and nine grandchildren but having a sister-in-law and circle of friends nearby helps. Aufranc wants to brunch and brainstorm about how to make her lanai feel more like a garden. After they suggest ways to incorporate some vintage plants that Aufranc has had for year, she feels accomplished and says, “Surrounded by a beautiful garden and views of the water—what could be better!”

Grabbing the last of the rosé Champagne on the buffet near Lasch’s grapefruit masterpiece, Brown refills her friends’ flutes, not letting one drop, or one moment of their wonderful company, go to waste. «

In many ways, K.C. Schulberg’s life reads like a screenplay. Here’s the concept: The progeny of a Hollywood dynasty, who’s worked on more than 200 films and television mini-series, falls in love with Naples, Florida, and steers his formidable talents toward advocacy for water conservation and social justice.

In the COLD OPEN, a 5-year-old Schulberg, a self-proclaimed “film brat,” is in buckle shoes and knee socks, waiting for his walk-on role as an extra in Wind Across the Everglades.

It’s 1957, and his father, prominent director/ producer Stuart Schulberg, and uncle, screen

writer Budd Schulberg, have teamed up to make the eco-themed film, starring Burl Ives and Christopher Plummer, on location in Everglades City.

When the crew wraps for the day, young Schulberg learns how to ride a bike and looks for needlefish and gators with Damas Kirk, son of the wildlife expert consulting on the film. The two boys run around the sleepy town, population 350, fishing rods in hand.

They wet their lines off the docks of the Rod and Gun Club and marvel at the sparkling waters of the Barron River.

MATCH CUT: a similar scene 55 years later.

Schulberg, now a film executive, and Kirk are on a fishing boat on the Gulf of Mexico. Nothing’s biting, so the conversation turns to real estate. Schulberg, whose family film legacy has been tied to Hollywood since the 1920s, has been wanting to buy property in Los Angeles, but the market is blazing and his offers NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2020

have gone unanswered. He turns his focus to Naples instead, charmed by its peaceful vibe, waterways, and wide-open spaces.

“I found a house I really liked,” he says. “It had been abandoned for two years but it was on five acres and had a horse farm. So I made an offer.”

DISSOLVE TO 2016. Schulberg enjoys living in Naples with his actress wife, Ynda, though he misses making movies. He joins the advisory board for the Lorenzo Walker Technical College media department and mentors young people in the film program.

At the same time, his banker introduces him to Vito Trupiano, a local budding filmmaker. Schulberg and Trupiano collaborate on an arthouse film called Wastecase, starring Ynda and a cast of amateur actors.

Schulberg is heartened. “You can find creativity anywhere,” he says. “Sometimes you have to be a little resourceful.”

He continues his quest for intellectual stimula72

A Hollywood DYNASTY

tion. “I like to nurture things and see them grow,” he says. “When I was [in senior-level positions, from production to marketing, in the 1990s] at Hallmark Entertainment, we doubled the size of that company every year.”

He hears about a nascent grassroots group called Collier Freedom, which promotes activism on social issues. He shows up at a planning meeting for a women’s march and says, humbly, “I’m here to help.” Translation: he’s all in. The event draws more than 1,000 people, thanks largely to his ability to motivate folks.

Schulberg appreciates this group’s mission so much that he joins for the long haul. He helps organize events around social issues, including the environment. He develops a series of workshops on climate change and water quality, and hosts a screening of the 2017 documentary An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power at the Silver

K.C. Schulberg is a third-generation film executive whose family has made formidable contributions to the Silver Screen. “My grandfather [B.P. Schulberg] was a Hollywood pioneer and produced about 100 movies, and ran Paramount [Studios] in the 1920s and ’30s,” he says.

B.P. famously co-produced the first film to win the Academy Award, the 1927 silent war film Wings. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and there’s a building on the Paramount lot named after him. “He’s quite a celebrated guy,” K.C. says.

B.P. handed the proverbial baton to his sons, Budd and Stuart (K.C.’s father). Stuart was executive producer of the Today show from 1968 to 1976 and went on to produce documen-

taries and films like Wind Across the Everglades (1957), which was written

by Budd. He also wrote the Academy Award–winning screenplay for the 1954 crime drama On the Waterfront.

Curiously, both brothers rebelled against the Hollywood stereotype.

“They both stayed within the business but kind of ran to the other end of it,” K.C. says. “Budd was primarily a novelist, and my father became primarily a documentary filmmaker.”

K.C.’s career followed a different trajectory. “I [started in] theater, which I considered more pure,” he says. “I gradually came back to movies after about six years in the theater business.”

He went on to work, in various capacities, on 25 feature films, including the Universal Pictures release King of New York and Luc Besson’s The Big Blue, before joining Hallmark Entertainment and working on scores of movies and television miniseries.

In 1998, he moved to France to start his own production company. That’s where he met his wife, Ynda.

Their move to Naples, in 2012, has fueled a different kind of creativity.

He’s worked on a handful of independent films, many set in Florida, and has more in the pipeline. Though he has no idea what the future will bring, he aims high. “I’d like to have an Oscar for our generation,” he says.

“My grandfather’s generation has an Oscar, my parents’ generation has an Oscar, and we don’t yet.”

Spot Cinema. The unexpected success of that event—they have to arrange a second screening on the spot—captures the attention of John Capece, one of the founding members of Calusa Waterkeeper.

The two become friendly and Capece is among the guests at gatherings the Schulbergs host at their home. The more he learns about Schulberg, the more he appreciates his talent and work ethic, not to mention his charisma.

But conflict is brewing in the background.

The Schulbergs want to further their work as filmmakers and long for the energy of Hollywood. They start to talk about moving to L.A. and eventually put their house on the market.

Break into two.

Everyone is bummed about this news.

Capece says, “When their friends would get together at their home for meetings or social gatherings, as soon as K.C. and Ynda would leave the room, the rest of us would start talking about how we might be able to prevent their departure. We’d joke about undermining the house sale somehow, but would then get serious and discuss possible carrots.”

Meanwhile, Capece is working to transition Caloosahatchee Riverwatch into Calusa Waterkeeper, a Fort Myers–based clean-water advocacy nonprofit. QUICK CUTS of Capece’s aha moment: Schulberg’s history with the Everglades, his ability to organize around social issues, his background in film, and his family’s connection to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., president of the international Waterkeeper Alliance.

A carrot indeed!

Capece puts Schulberg forth as a candidate for the Calusa Waterkeeper executive director position. Board members are skeptical—a film producer?—but change their minds the minute they meet him. Ruth Watkins, the board president, loves his energy. “Apparently on the drive from Naples to meet with us, he came up with an idea for an event. He had a name for it and everything, and had it planned in his head.”

He’s hired. First order of business: to execute that event he dreamed up in the car. The Big Calusa, an ambitious weeklong series of cleanups, boat tours, kayak races, and a Culture Night where storytellers share the history of

the waterways, is a huge success, cementing Schulberg’s reputation as rainmaker.

Working with the Waterkeeper, John Cassani, he learns that Southwest Florida water bodies, including the Caloosahatchee and the Gulf of Mexico, are under threat by harmful algal blooms (HABs), triggered when heavy rainfalls necessitate the release of water from Lake Okeechobee into feeder rivers. To compound the problem, the cyanobacteria responsible for the freshwater blooms is aerosolized, which presents a public health risk. Schulberg says, “If blue-green algae is in the air and everybody’s breathing it, what are the health concerns we’re facing? It’s necessary to get the word out.”

Contemplating how best to do that, he thinks, as he often does: Why not make a movie?

Once again, Schulberg’s talents pay dividends for the community.

But he doesn’t rest. “We need to keep educating people,” he says.

Walking his property with his 2-year-old rescue mutt, Heavenly, Schulberg reflects on the inspiration and friendships he’s found in Naples, the small town with the big heart and passion for conservation and the arts. “It’s been a good ride, and we feel that we’re doing good work and contributing to the overall well-being of our community,” he says.

Creatively supercharged, he makes a second movie for Calusa Waterkeeper—Eternal Vigilance—about restoring the Estero Bay tributaries. The film is set to premiere November 14, during an online fundraiser. He also continues work on personal projects, namely two feature films produced by his company, Glade Runner. The first, Kahar, is set in Afghanistan

and explores women’s rights through the lens of two sisters. It’s inspired by the real story of Ynda, who’s Afghan Algerian, and her cousin, a well-known Afghan actress. “I’d like to put out a movie with a message,” he says. “I think this one will have a whole lot of resonance.” He hopes to release it in 2021.

Equally meaningful to him is The Dare, based on a short story written by his late uncle Budd. He describes it as “a magical-realism mermaid tale set in an out-of-time period.”

With its South Florida setting and sprinkling of Everglades, Seminole, and old Florida lore, this film is a full-circle moment for Schulberg.

The overarching theme to Schulberg’s story is to improve the world through his work, art, and advocacy. “I don’t think it’s enough to make money or to coast or to take accolades,” he says. “You have to render the world more humane and more compassionate.”

He muses on success: “It has as much to do with what you’ve accomplished for other people as what you’ve accomplished for yourself.”

WHEN THE PANDEMIC FORCED FOLKS TO LAPTOP-HOP FROM ONE ROOM TO ANOTHER, NAPLES DESIGNERS WERE CALLED INTO ACTION TO CREATE WORKFROM-HOME ZONES

In mid-March, Paradise Coast residents realized that their home offices were in need of fortifying.

For many, homes were now operating as schools for kids and a workplace for adults.

Suddenly, Instagram was full of #WFH photos showing multitasking parents juggling a cell phone in one hand and a pancake spatula in the other—with a crying child in the background.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, functional home offices have never been more important. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of August, 31 percent of Americans currently working from home are positively responding to it. Locally, home office use continues to thrive. The Community Foundation of Collier County offered $5,000 grants to help 92

nonprofits create remote workstations. Habitat for Humanity of Collier County— one of the first grant recipients—found that because its employees were able to work off-site, they were better equipped to help locals navigate this tough time.

The importance of home offices isn’t vanishing any time soon, so we scouted seven highly personalized and high-performing work spaces that are certain to inspire you to make the most of a dedicated nook or room.

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT Sleek is not every homeowner’s version of office chic, which is something lead designer Troy Beasley, of Beasley & Henley Interior Design in Naples and Winter Park, learned when he worked on this transitional room with a slight nod to traditional details. Most important to the client was that the slightly rustic desk face the family room and not obstruct the view of the outside.

The window treatments soften the room and diffuse the sunlight that flows in and annoyingly hits the owner’s laptop. Almost everything in the space is based on an earth-tone palette. Beasley matched the shade of leather on the chairs to the impactful horse painting.

The ceiling is coffered and accented with a gray-blue hue Beasley pulled from the rug. Dark flooring makes the room feel more like a serious study.

WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND Do successful people ever really stop working? While the owners of this home are technically retired, they are both still very involved in giving back, and he serves on various professional boards. Lead designer Michael Scott, of Romanza Interior Design in Naples, created this highly tailored, transitionally styled office to suit the couple’s needs. A local artisan finished the made-toorder woodwork in an azure shade with a hand-dragged glaze technique. The upper transom windows bring light to an otherwise dark space. Flooring is a wide plank, hand-finished artisanal oak sourced through a California workshop. Inspired by an Art Deco original, the writing desk is coated with a fumed figured eucalyptus wood veneer and features polished stainless-steel accents. For the ultimate in efficiency, a full bath (not visible here) creates a suite and boasts matching design details.

ISN’T SHE LOVELY? When constructing this new home, Naples-based BCB Homes paid attention to the work-from-home trend and included a proper office. Lead designer Renée Gaddis, of Renée Gaddis Interiors in Naples, designed the modern space with minimalist oceanic touches. By keeping an eye toward a streamlined and clean aesthetic, the designer makes a statement that sometimes less is more, especially when it comes to having an uncluttered, high-focus station. Custom built-in office cabinetry was stained to match the home’s gorgeous plank flooring. Contrasting sharply against the multilayer desk, the über-comfortable chair is cloaked in a heavily textured fabric. Curated and edited, the thoughtful use of accessories, modern art, and lighting provides a huge impact in this stealthily dramatic room.

TAKE IT EASY When a homeowner wants a specific work zone, but nothing as serious as a formal study, there’s a cool alternative known as a “soft study.” By definition, a soft study is smaller in scale and designed to be comfortable and inviting. This transitional home office with coastal flair from lead designer Alina Dolan, of Collins DuPont Design Group in Bonita Springs, showcases a contrast of light neutrals and mixed metals. Pops of saffron and slate blues generate a vibrant energy. An open metal bookcase is paired with an unfussy, rustic wood desk. Opposite the work area, a sofa partners with carved, wood-sided ottomans and mixed-metal floor lamps that add a contemporary touch. The hair-on hide rug is a cozy element underfoot. Black and white photographs of shrimp boats anchor the productive place, and a whimsical coconut shell art piece on the opposing wall lightens the room’s vibe.

COME SAIL AWAY Some homeowners don’t want a large formal office, especially in a vacation home. Instead, they configure a pragmatic work area in a room designed for a different purpose. In this second residence, a semi-retired couple from the Northeast wanted to infuse their love of sailing into the space. Lead designer Troy Beasley, of Beasley & Henley Interior Design, selected a trestle-style, stained teak desk with a stainless-steel top and paired it with a chair reminiscent of rope. A mix of contemporary art, black and white photography, sketches of sailing, and other non-art accoutrements further expresses their love of water. Wall panels inlaid with a subtle grass cloth add to the room’s funky and eclectic design. White oak flooring coated with a glaze lightens the casual and welcoming office. The great utilization of pattern and print keeps the space optimized for the business of reading, relaxing, or researching.

LET’S STAY TOGETHER Even though lead designer Lana Knapp, of Collins DuPont Design Group, had worked with these homeowners several times before, every redesign project brings a fresh set of challenges. With this particular redo, the couple wanted to continue spending a lot of time together in this transitionally styled home office, which is awashed in natural light. They requested the space be very casual since they are in it so frequently, with him working on his laptop while she joins him on the cozy seat.

To achieve a relaxed ambience, the color palette includes rich wood tones, browns, and soft blues, the clients’ favorite color. The built-in cabinet—with stained-black cherry wood and custom mullions—stores family photos, artifacts from travels to the Vatican, and framed artwork in shades of blue. Porcelain tiles resemble wood parquet and provide a natural look while erasing concerns about scuff marks from the rolling desk chair.

TANGLED UP IN BLUE Many couples end up sharing a home office, including the homeowners who worked with lead designer Kirsten Young, of Little Palm Design Group in Naples, to create an under-the-sea mood in this space. Their office now strikes the perfect balance between masculine and feminine, but it originally featured overbearing dark woodwork. Young began by refreshing the windows with a white semigloss paint, then framed them with a blue and white embroidered fabric. Applying sapphire grass cloth to the walls created a sharp contrast between the white on the draperies and the high-back wing chairs, which play off the stained wood modern accent chair. By marrying new coastal accessories with some of their existing sentimental pieces (including canes, books, sculptures, and a clock) the homeowners felt they achieved a more inviting space perfect for brainstorming and productivity. « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | OCTOBER 2020

ELEVATED Slices Pizza purists might not be totally happy, but one local eatery is finally bringing this beloved dish into the twenty-first century.

In June, chef Michael Voorhis partnered with longtime friend Calvin Joiner to open Twisted Sheep Pizza & Brew. Voorhis is no stranger to local foodies: He was the opening chef at The Bevy (2017) and Lake Park Diner (2019), and he was named 2018 Best New Chef in the Naples Illustrated Dining Awards.

“When we looked at the pizza concept, we realized all the places At Twisted Sheep, Italian classics get a makeover, as seen in appetizers like the were the same,” says Voorhis. “We Candied Bacon Bruschetta. wanted to put a unique spin on it and do something interesting and fun. I was originally just going to invest and consult, but as we put it together, it became irresistible.”

The pair searched for months until they found the oven they wanted: a brick-lined Montague that bakes like a wood-burning oven at 600 degrees.

Ingredients are the finest available, culminating in what Joiner describes as “one-of-a-kind specialty pizzas unlike anything you’ve experienced before.”

While customers have the option of designing their own pie, the 10 craft pizzas form the heart of the menu. The chef’s personal favorite is Pig with a Sombrero, which contains braised pork, fire-roasted salsa, crushed tortillas, black beans, and jalapeño-ranch aioli, along with cheddar and mozzarella. Other highlights include the Smash Burger Pie (a Kobe beef cheeseburger, applewood bacon, tomato, pickles, spicy mustard, and cheese) and Roni Roni, which combines hand-cut pepperoni with soppressata, torn basil, and mozzarella. A rotating selection of craft beers is on tap, and soft drinks come from the Stubborn Soda fountain system that uses all-natural ingredients.

Voorhis encourages those who may be dubious of the unusual selections to come in with an open mind. “Sometimes nontraditional is good, and it’s worth trying before making judgments.” (twistedsheeppizza.com)

A CLASSIC, REIMAGINED On Valentine’s Day 1994, Bistro 821 opened with Jesse Housman at the range.

There were hardly any restaurants on Fifth Avenue South at the time, although a comprehensive plan was in place to make the avenue what it is now.

“The hot places at the time were Tony Ridgway’s Truffles and Chef’s Garden on Third Street South, and I worked at both before we opened Bistro 821,” says Housman.

Over the years, Housman has morphed from employee to partner to majority owner, but the concept has remained the same: an upscale yet casual neighborhood place with excellent food and friendly service. Housman, who studied under luminaries such as Jacques Pépin and Julia

Child, specializes in what he calls “natural fusion,” a style of cooking where basic French techniques are applied to cuisines as far-flung as Italian and Asian. He gave the decor a facelift after buying out his partners earlier this year, commissioning sculptures from Ed Kohler and dedicating a wall to local artists.

The bar program is just as interesting as the food and ambience. Bistro 821 offers eight barrel-aged cocktails, including the Zombie (pictured), a combination of light, dark, and overproof rum with Velvet Falernum, citrus, and bitters.

Experimentation aside, Housman’s philosophy is simple. “We try to find out exactly what customers want and then give it to them,” he says. “There are dishes that have been on the menu for decades, but we’re always coming up with something new.” (bistro821.com)

Social distancing is a requirement of the moment, but The Continental has been offering it since opening in 2014. At this Third Street mainstay, guests can sit at one of five private cabanas on the terrace, available free of charge on a firstcome, first-served basis.

“We based the idea on a similar outdoor table at Campiello,” says Michael Smith, full-service director of operations for D’Amico and Partners. “We realized that customers wanted an area that was exclusive and private, and we wanted to make the concept more available.”

Tuuci constructed the enclosures using stainless-steel frames and a waterproof canvas fabric. Water-cooled fans provide increased airflow and also allow the temperature to be reduced up to 10 degrees on a hot day.

Although the two larger cabanas can accommodate up to 10 guests, seating was limited to six during and after the quarantine.

The speakeasy was the center of social life during Prohibition.

It also spurred a creative explosion in mixology that still inspires bartenders today.

“People love having their own private spot,” says Marty Kenny, who partnered with friend David Ladic to open Sidebar on Fifth Avenue South in February. “I wanted to cater to locals and be found by word of mouth, so there’s no website. You don’t need a password to get in, but you have to be able to find it.”

No food is served, and Kenny prefers to focus on original craft cocktails and allocated wines, as well as a list of nearly 200 distinctive bourbons, ryes, and tequilas. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Sidebar quickly became a destination for patrons indulging in a high-quality before- or after-dinner experience.

A trio of bartenders collaborates on the cocktail list, which changes frequently. Their offerings range from fresh and herbal choices such as the Sidepiece (Fords Gin, Aperol, lemon, sage, and ginger) to the complex and balanced Confab (Rittenhouse Rye, 1792 Small Batch Bourbon, Calvados, Cognac, and bitters). By using the Coravin system—which allows servers to pour wine without removing the cork—Sidebar is able

Comforting ROUTINES What’s the first thing you do when you stumble out of bed in the morning? Your regular a.m. decision could impact how the rest of your day unfolds. According to researchers at the University of Connecticut, rituals—intentional behaviors throughout the day that have a purpose—give your brain a perception of control that kicks in when you’re faced with worrying situations. The new study shows that rituals work as coping mechanisms to ward off anxiety. “Rituals give people an increased sense of personal control and structure in their everyday lives and especially during times of great uncertainty, says Sue McDonald, a licensed mental health counselor and life coach in Naples. “When you engage in rituals your mind shifts from focusing on your stress to focusing on the ritual itself.” Read on to see how your daily rituals are benefitting your life or how to incorporate them more often.

It might sound silly, but this ritual is powerful because it builds momentum to tackle the rest of the day. “No matter how bad or stressful your day becomes, you made your bed,” says McDonald. “And if that is all that you complete, it is still a success.

You have accomplished one task, even though it’s small, and it’s in your control.”

Once a week: Walk outside and leave your phone at home. Pay attention to sensory details, such as how your feet feel in the sand or the rustle of the leaves on the sidewalk. As you stroll, take slow, deep breaths then exhale as if through a straw.

Think of this time as a walking meditation.

“People tend to undervalue the power of breathing for bringing calm to the body and mind,” says McDonald. “The parasympathetic nervous system will be activated just by using this strategy.”

Once a month: Write a note or a thank-you card—it can be to your neighbor or your best friend, as long as you recognize that this person has recently made a positive impact in your life. “The reward is that we are focusing our attention on something outside of ourselves, another person, and away from our problems,” says McDonald. Expressing gratitude actually makes your brain release the feel-good chemicals dopamine and serotonin, and decreases the levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

HEART BEETS Beets might not strike you as a go-to veggie at the farmers market, but you should reconsider. Not only is this high-fiber root vegetable one of the top 10 plants when it comes to antioxidant qualities, research shows that it can help to control diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure and improve circulation. “Beets are rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly folate and manganese,” says Diana Vittorio, a registered dietitian and nutritionist at Cederquist Medical Wellness Center in Naples. But it’s not just the bulbs that are good for you. “The beet tops, which I like to use in salads, are high in iron and beta carotene.” Plus, the flavonoids in the stalks are touted for their anti-inflammatory properties.

The easiest way to prepare beets is to roast them, which develops the sugars, making them a perfect pairing with a tart vinaigrette.

(You don’t ever want to boil beets as it drains them of their rich flavor.) Pair beets with vitamin C–rich citrus fruits to aid with iron absorption. Check out this scrumptious fall salad recipe, below.

Beet and Citrus Salad (serves two) 2 beets Olive oil Salt 1 blood orange Red wine vinaigrette Feta or goat cheese to garnish

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Remove and clean the leaves (save for another salad). Scrub the beets but leave the skin intact. Drizzle with olive oil, about 1 teaspoon per beet. Sprinkle with salt. Wrap in aluminum foil and place in a roasting dish. Roast for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on size, until a knife goes in easily. Once cooled, peel and cut into quarter-inch circles and arrange on a plate. Top each piece with a thin slice of peeled blood orange. Drizzle with red wine vinaigrette. Finish with feta or goat cheese crumbles, to taste.

The local art scene is slowly emerging from pandemic hibernation and stretching its wings, to the joy of Neapolitan art lovers. Befitting its nurturing environment, the Naples Botanical Garden is launching its second exhibition in recent months. Ten organically shaped, steel and bronze sculptures have been installed throughout the 170-acre oasis as part of “Steve Tobin: Nature Underground,” opening October 1. Tobin’s distinctive freestanding, monumental works emulate nature in many forms¾, specifically roots for this show. The garden’s

theme for the 2020-2021 season is “Roots: Power of the Unseen,” so various programs will invite guests to physically and conceptually contemplate the underground structures that give plants life. During your visit, stop by Kapnick Hall to view “The Impressionist’s Garden: Plein Air Paintings by Paul Arsenault,” on display until November 8. And, as a special way of thanking first responders and essential workers, the garden is offering free entry to that group as part of its Community Appreciation Program through December 31. Harmon-Meek Galleries Harmon-Meek Gallery is heading into its fifty-eighth season in Naples with a refocused space and approach.

Gallery director-owner Kristine Meek has converted the family-run fine art gallery at 599 Ninth Street N. into a private viewing and sales space. Harmon-Meek|modern, overseen by Juliana Meek, remains at 382 Twelfth Avenue S. The modern gallery is introducing a new artist to its representation portfolio, Mally Khorasantchi, known for her nature-inspired, abstract, oil-on-canvas works. In this pandemic era, it will be the gallery’s first season that won’t include its popular opening receptions to meet and mingle with the artists. Marco Island Center for the ARTS Now through October 6, the Marco Island Center for the Arts is hosting “March-July 2020: Artistic Reflections” in the Lauritzen and Rush galleries. The Baker Museum of Art Art-loving Neapolitans were thrilled when The Baker Museum at Artis— Naples reopened in December after being closed for two years in the wake of Hurricane Irma. The repair of the museum was paired with a simultaneous expansion of the building to the south. Alas, it shut down again at the onset of the pandemic. In August—¾the first time in its history that it has been open during that month¾—the museum began offering guided tours for members of Friends of Artis— Naples and first responders. Roz Travis

has been beautifying interiors in some of Naples’ finest neighborhoods for more than 40 years. She still loves the challenge of working with her small but mighty team on a complete gut job in an elevator high-rise during remodeling season, between May 1 and October 31. The Cleveland, Ohio, native is a proud Buckeye and a mom of two grown children, Kristin and David. Travis’ cowboy boot–wearing partner of 29 years, Matt, is an attorney, and they live together in a 40-year-old courtyard home in Pelican Bay. During quarantine, Travis had a slew of clients wanting to update their homes, with a focus on improving cooking and dining areas, as well as making living spaces multifunctional. Though arts causes are a passion, Travis also supports the Shelly Stayer Shelter for Victims of Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence and will chair the Old Bags event on April 15 to benefit the shelter. She is grateful to live in a generous community that privately funds important organizations and thankful for the clients she works with. “I want them to feel like they have a wonderful home here,” she says.
