As we reflect upon the COVID-19 pandemic, our hearts are filled with gratitude for those on the front lines, particularly those in health care—the doctors, nurses, and medical staff who are working tirelessly, putting themselves in harm’s way to care for those who are ill. Naples’s world-class medical community is a blessing to us all. Many types of heroes have emerged during the coronavirus crisis. Thank you to the employees of our grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, and other essential retail locations who have kept their doors open, shelves stocked, and patience intact as we inquired, again and again, when the next shipment of toilet paper would arrive. To those behind the scenes—the truck drivers, the mail carriers—who continue to operate business as usual so that we can maintain some sense of normalcy, we salute you. We already knew teachers were our heroes, but we are reminded of their commitment to our children during stay-at-home quarantines. The creative ways they have engaged students with online learning and the stories of caravans of educators driving through neighborhoods to show their support and comfort our kids are simply amazing. A message to those in the restaurant industry: We are here for you and will be waiting in line when you reopen. In the meantime, thank you all for your dedication to serving your wonderful cuisine via takeout. Food is a reason we gather and share special moments with friends, colleagues, and family. We count the days until we can grace your dining rooms and patios again. Small and local businesses are the backbone of our economy. They have supported Naples Illustrated for more than two decades, and I encourage everyone to continue to support area shop owners and their staffs as we emerge stronger together. Naples’s nonprofit community, which diligently serves the most vulnerable among us, will need our help more than ever. If you have the ability, please find a cause that speaks to you and make a difference with your donation, talent, or time. Most summers resound with matrimonial bliss as couples swap rings and soar off on honeymoons, eager to embrace the next phase. This year, however, the coronavirus has silenced church bells, shuttered banquet halls, and left many couples in limbo, wondering when—or if—to reschedule. As our hearts go out to those affected, we invite you to celebrate not only the shuffled nuptials that have been put on hold but also the beautiful weddings that occurred before the crisis. Brooke Stayer Wagner, whose parents live in Port Royal, and Tucker Reimer were married in Naples shortly before the pandemic’s full grip. The story of their three-day event—extraordinary in both its breadth and hospitality—begins on page 48. Also in this wedding issue, we present Jillian Haverkate and Grant Finlayson, a couple who wed last year on Pelican Isle, where the bride’s parents have a home. Although Grant’s an anesthesiologist at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and Jillian’s a physician recruiter, the couple took time to tell us about their special day. We’re deeply grateful to the Garden District of Naples and the bride’s mother, Sheryl Haverkate, for helping us share their story, which starts on page 56. Gratitude, in fact, is in full force as we witness Neapolitan efforts to thank and protect first responders, health-care workers, and others on the front line fighting COVID-19. The Community Foundation of Collier County launched the Collier Comes Together for Coronovirus emergency-relief fund to address social and economic issues triggered by the pandemic. The foundation created a Collier Comes Together fund shortly before Hurricane Irma roared into town three years ago, and residents who stepped up then are joining forces again. With hurricane season beginning June 1, it’s essential that we prepare early, especially with the unprecendented challenges facing medical providers. Turn to page 26 of our Insider section to learn how you can help not only others but also yourself and your family. On a lighter note, no wedding issue would be complete without reveling in the latest bridal gown trends—lace and separates, no less—or dropping by some of Southwest Florida’s most unexpected vow-swapping venues, such as Misty Morning Barn at Clutch Farms in Fort Myers. Our nuptial coverage continues on p. 62. And finally, speaking of extending our hearts to the community, Marissa Collections in Naples will host a trunk show May 1-14 featuring Have a Heart charms, which are curated by Muse, a New York–based jewelry agency. Proceeds from each charm support a cause, and Marissa CEO Jay Hartington, who’d envisioned the collection as a perfect gifting opportunity for Mother’s Day, now says that some charms will be earmarked to benefit coronavirus-related charities. Naples glassblower and teacher Conrad Williams creates custom toasting flutes and wedding favors destined to be cherished long after the “I dos.” Williams, whose work is showcased in local galleries, made his first pair of flutes about 18 years ago for a friend’s wedding. “I didn’t know what to get them, so I made them,” recalls the artist, who transforms 2,500-degree molten globs of silica into elegant objects. The Naples native earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in glass and sculpture from the California College of the Arts before undertaking internships with Dale Chihuly and Ben Moore in Seattle. The flute bowls typically are clear to reveal the bubbly contents, but the glass itself can

incorporate small bubbles too. The stem and foot are designed to match the wedding’s motif or color palette, or the couple’s style. With a diamond-tipped tool, Williams etches names and dates onto items. For guest gifts, he makes paperweights, loggerhead sea turtles and queen conchs, ornaments, sea biscuits that serve as salt dishes, and oil lamps. “Every time they light it, they can think of the time they went down to Naples for their friend’s wedding,” he says. Continued NI: What drew you to your craft? Williams: Watching professional glassblowers work is like watching a ballet dancer. There’s a fluidity and grace, yet it is very technical and can take strength as well. Once you try it, your skills become exponential and you can push goals a little further and continue reaching. Also, it’s a way to be very present. If you space out and start thinking about when your Comcast bill is due, you’re likely to fail. You have no choice but to be there, in the moment, and that’s kind of hard to achieve these days. Are there any guest gifts you can’t make? I’m always up for a challenge after 22 years. Even if there’s something that seems insurmountable, we can come up with something that comes close. We sit down and problem-solve and decide how to approach it. We can always create something the couple feels good about. Where do you sell your fine art objects locally? Judith Liegeois Designs, St-Tropez Home on Third Street, Peach Tree on Fifth Avenue South, a gallery off Vanderbilt called Vibe, and both RitzCarltons. By appointment, people can come to my private studio. Sometimes people take a look, and they may want something a little different, say, in cobalt blue, and we work on how to meet their needs. Do people have to be artistic to take lessons? Lessons are basically designed for people who have an interest in glassblowing and may have 24
tried it before or not, but no experience is necessary. They can choose an item from an à la carte [menu] of choices. First, I demonstrate it, and then I walk them through the whole process with no glass. The third time, they’re doing it themselves, and I work with them every step of the way. I used to only give lessons to adults 18 and over, but now [I work with] ages 6 and up. There’s something special about working with a 6-year-old to make an ornament. Their 6-year-old breath is trapped in it; it never goes away. I find that very special. For lessons, they can come to my private studio or do it poolside at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples. You don’t have to be a guest at the Ritz to participate. This is my sixth season at the Ritz, and it’s expanded a little every year. What drives your passion for teaching? There are two components. One is the excitement of watching someone who’s never done it before working with this magical material. When my student is finished or smiling ear-to-ear, I get as ex-
cited as the first time I blew glass. It’s an exchange of energy that doesn’t get old. It’s nourishing as an artist to see it through fresh eyes. The other is that I got a chance to blow at a relatively young age, when I was in high school, and I got to pursue something I love. I love being the role model who is proof that I found something I love and put my heart into it and do it every day. I like being the person who can spread that message to kids.

Be PREPARED Most Southwest Floridians know that the Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1, and for Neapolitans who hunkered down for Hurricane Irma in 2017, preparation and post-storm recovery are a not-too-distant memory. Getting one’s ducks in a row can help to ward off anxiety, which is the goal of the third annual Get Organized Hurricane Preparedness Event. Dan Summers, director of the Collier County Bureau of Emergency Services, and Marla Ottenstein, Naples’ premier professional organizer, will present the free seminar on June 3 at Artis—Naples. Summers is a 35-year emergency management veteran who has coordinated operations for more than 20 declared disasters. Ottenstein is a former local columnist who shared organizing and decluttering tips for 10 years and has honed her “Ultimate Hurricane Checklist,” which seminar attendees will receive, for a decade. A lot of planning wisdom has evolved over time and through experience, she says. Instead of stocking three days of clean
drinking water, for instance, new guidelines call for 14 days. Summers has given Ottenstein’s checklist his stamp of approval because of its accuracy and creativity. An example: She recommends storing your laptop in the dishwasher during a storm because it’s a waterproof, secure, and protected location. Why does she advise buying dry shampoo? “If you’ve gone 14 days without washing your hair, you would know,” she responds. Event attendees will learn the most up-to-date facts and information and get inspired to prepare now. They’ll receive swag bags containing items such as a screwdriver kit, LED flashlight, batteries, and cellphone-mounted fan that were donated by local businesses and Lowe’s. “It’s really a community event,” Ottenstein says. “It’s public-private partnership coming together as one for community safety.” Seating is limited, and registration is required. STRONGER TOGETHER Residents joined forces to help in the aftermath of the most destructive hurricane to make landfall in Collier County, and that strong bond from Bonita Springs to Marco Island is evident once again. The Community Foundation of Collier County launched the Collier Comes Together for Coronavirus emergency-relief fund in mid-March to create a safety net for those caught in the web of issues spurred by the pandemic, such as unemployment, hunger, isolated seniors, lost educational opportunities, and at-risk children. “We really don’t know what’s coming down the pike,” says Eileen ConnollyKeesler, president and CEO of the foundation. “We want to be prepared for whatever it is we need. That’s what we do.” The foundation created a Collier Comes Together fund two weeks before Hurricane Irma bore down in 2017. One hundred percent of the 26
$2.2 million in donations were distributed to 27 nonprofits, aiding 4,146 hurricane victims. However, a majority of that money came from outside of Florida—from across the nation, Europe, and Japan. “That’s not going to be the case with this,” Connolly-Keesler says, noting that communities worldwide are grappling with the impacts of the pandemic, and most donors will be giving locally. In addition, many generous seasonal residents have returned to homes elsewhere. “We know we aren’t going to get outside resources,” she adds. “We need to depend on people who live here and those with homes in Collier County for
charitable giving.” The Community Foundation is working with nonprofits throughout Southwest Florida as well as the United Way of Collier County. “We’re addressing the top needs,” she says. “We’re all concerned there won’t be enough money, but we have to stretch what we do have and work with it. eeking a seasonal getaway, a New Jersey couple searched for several years until they discovered this East Naples, three-bedroom residence. Situated on a small lake, the new 2,432-square-foot home in Winding Cypress was ideal, with the exception of the plain interior that was in dire need of some Southwest Florida attitude. During the home-buying process, the couple had collected the business cards of various designers and realized that the interiors they were most drawn to were by Minka McDonald, president of Naples-based Jinx McDonald Interior Designs, and design associate Janine Blume. “This was a really fun project,” McDonald says. “They wanted a chic coastal design with a cool green and blue color scheme with a happy vibe. They like to entertain family and friends and have a lot of house guests when they are in Florida. It’s almost like a touch of Key West.” Bright, cheerful furnishings in the airy great room beckon the entire clan to relax. Outfitted in a neutral ivory performance fabric, the sectional sofa contrasts decorously against two swivel arm chairs covered

in shagreen. Blume designed the tastefully playful hummingbird toss and lumbar pillows, which contribute hints of tropical colors to the room. Grid molding offsets the dramatic media console that features eglomise antique mirrored doors with button hardware, eliminating the need for pulls. Accessories and artwork that reflect the local lifestyle, such as the Flamingo ll giclée by artist Nash Rambler, complete the tranquil space. The kitchen already had great bones, top-of-the-line appliances, and a fabulous view—the only missing element was personalization. To enliven it, the designers focused on color and energy, starting with painting the walls a pale blue-green. The barstools are both posh and practical, upholstered on one side with a green striped fabric and on the other with an easy-to-clean faux leather. Wally, the little whale planter on the countertop, is everyone’s favorite piece. Intimate enough for two or large enough to accommodate a group, the dining room is a pleasant blend of elegance and comfort. The chenille-clad silhouette chairs are a delicate counterpoint to the driftwood-stained white oak table. The chandelier draws the eye upward and toward the aqua-toned wall blossoms by master glassblower Tim Miller and the white coral mounted on the wall. “I wanted to create a space [in which] the family could gather for special occasions and make memories that would last a lifetime,” Blume says. “The dining room’s focal point is the stunning blown-glass, flowering chandelier that can be seen from multiple areas within the home. The soft seafoam hues in the fabrics set the tone for a stress-free evening of entertaining.” Luxe yet serene, the master bedroom showcases touches of glamour intertwined with modernity. Mother-of-pearl in a starburst design graces the nightstands, which are topped by crystal pendant lights and frameless mirrors with antique edges. These feminine elements are further augmented by the recurring seafoam color story expressed in the custom bedding and drapes.

ABODE “The client drove the design,” Blume says of the bedroom. “She wanted a glitzy feel. We added a highquality bed to balance it.” The home has two guest bedrooms, both of which feature distinctly Floridian motifs, such as fish and coral reef pillows and a Tropic Pool artwork by Wendover Art Group. The designers note that the clients wanted the guest rooms to capture a vacation vibe that their company would feel immediately upon entry. If the guest rooms are all play, then the study is all work. Functional in its layout, the office offers ample storage and boasts a masculine aesthetic, with finishes that lend warmth to the space. Drawers on the bespoke book cases and writing console have rich, charcoalleather upholstered doors. The desk is a light visual reprieve, while the darkness of the fan allows for it to be almost absorbed by the rest of the design. The artwork evokes a sense of place; Naples, Florida Pier at Sunset by Nicole Freedman dominates a blank wall and Adam Mowery’s The Window, which is enclosed in an acrylic box, speaks to the aquatic accessories surrounding it. tiful and increase the radiation on chilly nights. The leaf rug brings in an array of vibrant hues offset by a cream-colored seahorse side table. “I am so thrilled with the outcome and how the home came together,” Blume says. “Our client loves her home and cried tears of joy when it was completed. Everything was how we envisioned it and [evokes] all of the feelings we wanted to create. It was a wonderful project.” «

With its new G 90 FLAGSHIP, Genesis redefines what a true LUXURY SEDAN should be By Howard Walker
Architectural rock star Frank Lloyd Wright once said, “Give me the luxuries of life and I will willingly do without the necessities.” With that philosophy in mind, I’m sure Wright would have loved this flagship 2020 G90 from Genesis. After all, it positively brims with life’s luxuries without skimping on all those necessities—such as wheels. And much as Wright strived to achieve during his prolific 70-year career, the G90 makes one heck of a design statement. Okay, let’s get that 800-pound gorilla out of the way first. Naturally, I’m referring to the grille. Love it or loathe it, it does command as much attention as a Mack truck in a china store. And that’s exactly the point:

Genesis wants this new G90 to get noticed, to stand out from the crowd, to start a conversation. Not that in-your-face grilles are anything new in the automotive world these days. BMW’s swollen kidneys on the latest 7 Series have become almost comically ginormous. Lexus’ spindle on the LS? It’s about as subtle as a plane crash. Ditto the chrome-infused maw on Audi’s A8. But I do like the diamond-pattern surface of the G90’s twinkling-chrome grille. It’s a motif repeated throughout the car, from the leather stitching inside to the headlights to the 19-inch alloys. And what awesome wheels they are. Complex, ornate without being cheesy, and total head-turners, they look like something you might spy on a $200-grand Mercedes-Maybach. In keeping with its flagship status, the G90 is a whopper. Stretching 205 inches bow to stern, it’s up there in size with such driveway hoggers as the Lexus LS, BMW 7, and Audi A8. But in the G90, almost every inch is dedicated to enhancing the comfort of those lucky enough to be ensconced inside. Take the rear seats, for example, which are nothing less than fully reclining La-Z-Boys. Slip off your Guccis, close your eyes, and

you’ll be at grandma’s house before you know it. Select the Ultimate package, and those rear loungers will come equipped with cooling and massage functions; the right seat will even boast an extendable footrest. Overall, the cabin’s quality and craftsmanship verges on Bentleyesque. There are acres of quilted Nappa leather, brushed-aluminum accents, and truly gorgeous open-pore wood. Genesis engineers also strived to create a pin-drop-quiet oasis by installing triple-sealed doors, insulated acoustic glass, and layer upon layer of sound-hushing materials. Out on the street, the big G throws off any pretensions of sportiness with a single-minded focus on noise-canceling refinement and silent running. The two engines available—a range-topping, 5.0-liter, 420-hp V-8, plus a 3.3-liter, twin-turbo, 365-hp V-6—are both kings of calm, propelling the G90 at triple-digit velocities with barely a murmur. Our Porto Red tester came with the turbine-smooth V-6, and in the 600-plus miles I shared with it over one blissful week of driving, I never lusted after the V-8. For all its refinement, the V-6 packs a mean punch. Mated to an alert,

super-smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic, it will rocket the G90 from standstill to 60 mph in a brisk 5.4 seconds. Yes, there’s a Sport setting to sharpen throttle response, add weight to the steering, and adjust the front seat side bolsters for added support. But, when it comes to highend long-distance travel, leave it in Comfort for an ultra-serene ride. To many, the real appeal of this flagship Genesis is going to be its competitive pricing. The range starts with the 3.3T at $73,195, with allwheel drive adding $2,500. The big 5.0 V-8 stickers at $76,695—many thousands less than the German competition. Add the fact that Genesis has snatched the top spot in the 2020 J.D. Power vehicle dependability study, and the new G90 has a lot going for it. Frank Lloyd would probably agree that this could well be the “Wright” choice. «

NI hitches a ride in Cigarette Racing’s 2,700-horsepower, 59-foot TIRRANNA SPEED MACHINE

I
’m feeling the need for speed. So, let’s take a ride in Cigarette Racing’s crazy-fast Tirranna AMG Edition, a beauty that boasts six 450-hp Mercury Racing outboards totaling 2,700 hp. That all translates to a top speed of 80 mph. Oh, yeah. I’ve come to opening day of the 2020 Miami International Boat Show to take a drag off of this latest $3.3 million Cigarette. Conditions, however, fall far short of stellar, with a stiff easterly filling Biscayne Bay with some frisky whitecaps. This is going to be wild. Behold the Tirranna and it seems huge. It is, in fact, the biggest Cigarette ever, measuring 14 feet across and almost 60 feet from pointy bow to broad stern. These are the dimensions needed should you require enough room to party with 25 of your closest friends. Miami-based Cigarette Racing introduced the Tirranna (a name derived from the Australian aboriginal term for “running water”) to mark its fiftieth anniversary. The version I’ve come to experience is the one-off Mercedes-AMG Edition, the latest installment in Cigarette’s 13-year bespoke-car-boat partnership with Mercedes’ AMG performance division.
For 2020, the big Cigarette took its inspiration from Mercedes’ own box on wheels: the 577-hp Mercedes-AMG G 63. Both the Tirranna and the G 63 share similar exterior war paint and parallel interiors. Should those aforementioned parties turn into sleepovers, the Tirranna is equipped with a forward settee that transforms into a queen bed, as well as a separate shower and a small galley. Up top, the bow offers seating and loungers for up to 12; the back deck can accommodate another 10, in addition to eight seats behind the center console. The time has come to fire up those Mercury Racing 450R V-8 outboards. Jim Secord, Cigarette’s chief test driver, is gracefully guiding this 40,000-pound heavyweight out of the narrow Miami dock. “It may be 59 feet, but this is probably the easiest boat in our range to maneuver,” Secord says while giving quick bursts of the bow and stern thrusters in order to spin the Tirranna around on its axis. The swells are rolling in, but they’re no match for the Cigarette’s Seakeeper 9 gyro stabilizer. This $100-grand option will save the day— and your margarita—should you ever host a cocktail soiree on board.

Secord mashes the throttles forward, lifting the needle-like bow as we race from 50 to 60 to 70 mph. He indicates that 70 is the boat’s comfort zone, though they’ve recorded 80.5 on flat water. As you might expect with 2,700 hp, fuel economy isn’t the Cigarette’s best quality. With a 1,000-gallon tank, you’re looking at an Amex-card-melting $4,000 per fill-up. The good news is it will cover around 600 miles—or one round trip from Miami to Nassau, with ample fuel left over. But what’s most remarkable about the boat is the smoothness of its ride and how easily it slices through two-to-three footers. That, and its refinement. Even with all six Mercs thundering at full throttle, the only sound audible from behind the helm is the light roar of the wind. Of course, in keeping with the party-boat theme, there’s also a 29-speaker JL Audio Marine radio for those in want of a more raucous soundtrack.
Back at the dock, I ask Cigarette Racing CEO Skip Braver about the most probable buyer he envisions for this one-of-a-kind superboat. “It’s likely to be a family guy who likes enjoying life with friends and family and will use it more as a day-boat for heading to lunch or hanging on the hook at the sandbar,” he shares. We’ll have to agree to disagree. To me, this Cigarette is all but ideal for those with the desire to sprint over to the Bahamas at warp speed, or roughly 80 mph, give or take. «

hat began as a glance on a school bus in Wisconsin would culminate in one of Naples’ most spectacular weddings, a three-day event marked by pageantry and grace that ranged from Port Royal to The Ritz—both resorts, beach and golf. “Tucker saw Brooke for the first time in fourth grade,” Ralph Stayer told 500 guests seated on the carpeted lawn of The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort in early March. “They rode the same bus, but they went to different schools, so Tucker didn’t find out who that cute girl was until Brooke changed schools in seventh grade. ... What began as a friendship back in junior high has blossomed into a deep, abiding love, which is why we are here today—to witness the union of Tucker and Brooke.” Stayer, owner of Johnsonville Sausage, officiated the ceremony (“he went online to get certified,” the bride recalls with a smile), and her mother, Shelly Stayer, walked her down the aisle. The intimacy of the nuptials offered a tranquil inter-
lude to a long weekend filled with parties, performances, fireworks, and a surprise private show by Kenny Chesney. The country star is a favorite of the couple’s back in Wisconsin, where they and their friends gather at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, to watch him play. Multiple festivities and a celebrity aside, Brooke Stayer Wagner and Tucker Reimer vowed from the start to focus on, well, their vows. “When we started planning—from the flowers to the setup to the production of everything—it was always about the ceremony,” Brooke says. “We wanted everything to be really cool and interesting, but we viewed the ceremony as the most important part. A lot of people go to weddings, and the ceremony is only 10 or 15 minutes long. But we wanted that moment.”

That moment began after Tucker proposed in December 2018, four months after Brooke’s sister, Brittany Wagner Scalia, wed in Kohler, Wisconsin, which is near Johnsonville headquarters in Sheboygan Falls. The sisters’ late father, Larry Wagner, was remembered at both events, including a note of dedication on Brooke and Tucker’s ceremony card that listed 26 attendants, not counting the matron of honor and best man. “It was always my dream to get married in the backyard of the house,” Brooke recalls, referring to her parents’ home in Port Royal, where the Stayers have lived for 11 years. “It’s so elegant there. But then we realized it wouldn’t feel that way with 500 people in the yard, so we thought about the mood we wanted to create, and it made us think about sitting on the patio [at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort] listening to Andrea Bocelli. It was so peaceful, and that gave us the idea to have the ceremony there.” The Stayers teamed up with wedding planner Milda Vaivada of Soiree Celebrations in Miami; Matthew Huddleston of 50Fifty Creative Services in Naples; and Ritz special events and sales executives Sandra Pals (of the golf resort) and Patricia Murphy (of The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, which is at the beach). Once the details were in place, it was time to design the invitation suite. “Doing that was one of my favorite parts of the wedding,” Brooke says, describing a mailing that included a 9-inch-by-6inch piece of printed acrylic nestled in felt and tucked in a three52

part folder. “Every element had a reason. Blush was the color of my bridesmaids’ dresses, and the subtle leaves were because I wanted people to have a sense of Florida, but not by using seashells and palm trees. The suede on the outside of the folder came from the table linen.” A rose gold–colored monogrammed magnet topped with the initials B and T sealed the deal, so to speak, with separate invitation cards announcing each event. The wedding weekend opened with a “Welcome to Paradise!” party at Ritz beach—think steel drums, exotic birds, sand sculptures, and fireworks—and then guests were given VIP passes like you’d wear to go backstage at a rock concert. “There were buckets of beer and deep-fried gator bites, which we decided to do instead of cheese curds,” Brooke says, referencing a signature Wisconsin snack. “We wanted the weekend to have something for everyone no matter where they were from, but with a Florida theme. I didn’t want appetizers on a fancy platter Friday night, so a lot of the food was set up in bird cages. It was really fun and creative, but that was just the beginning.” Ralph made an announcement to round up the revelers, who were then put on buses bound for the Ritz’s golf property about 4 miles away. “Mom, Tucker, and I talked about the entertainment that night, and he and I mentioned Kenny Chesney but didn’t want to get our hopes up. But once it was confirmed, it became the best-kept secret ever! I’ve never kept a secret from my sister in my life, especially when wine was involved, but I didn’t tell her. Dan [Brittany’s husband] said it was the most proud of me he’s ever been.”

Brooke is animated when talking about cheese curds and sisterhood, but on her wedding day, as she exchanged vows in front of an arched backdrop reminiscent of ancient Rome, she epitomized elegance. Her veil lingered in the breeze above her 9-foot-train, part of a lace-adorned Vera Wang gown she and Shelly discovered at Ever After, a bridal salon in Miami. “I wanted something very traditional and grand for the ceremony, something I’d never wear to another black-tie event, just for my wedding day. At first I very much wanted a big Cinderella-type ballgown because I was marrying my Prince Charming, but in the wedding industry, ballgowns can be very poofy and have so much tulle that you can’t see your toes. We found this at the last shop we went to, and I loved the lace because it was so traditional.” What wasn’t traditional, however, was Shelly’s black Alexander McQueen pantsuit, which she wore to walk her daughter down the aisle. (She later changed into a strapless Carolina Herrera gown with custom, pull-on sleeves. Both outfits came from Marissa Collections in Naples.) “Obviously, my mom is very important to me, and I wanted her to be a significant part of the ceremony,” Brooke says. “She’s been through everything with Tucker and me since we were teenagers. I remember her 54
playing volleyball in the foyer with us, not worrying about the chandeliers. She didn’t want to take away anything from my dress, so we were thinking that since the dad usually wears a tux to walk the bride down the aisle, why not her? I loved it. “When Tucker and I were talking about who we wanted to officiate the wedding, there was really no one who came to mind as far as a priest or pastor. But Ralph’s very passionate about his faith, and we couldn’t think of a better person—someone who’s spent as much time with both of us— than him. He asked us separately the one thing that we loved the most about each other, and he tied those things into life lessons about love.” Soft laughter rippled through the guests as Ralph prefaced his remarks

during the ceremony by saying: “No one ever remembers the content of a wedding sermon, but they do remember the length. As Shelly said to me this morning, ‘Brevity is the soul of wit.’” He offered guidance for the couple about patience, kindness, forgiveness, and attitude. “Every morning when you get up, choose to be happy, and great joy will follow. Life is too beautiful to be anything but happy.” Then vows and rings were exchanged—hers by Greene & Co. and his by David Yurman, both from Provident Jewelry in Naples—and a reception followed in a nearby tent, resplendent with white flowers, lush greenery, and a touch of whimsy: A coffee bar called Starbrooke’s. Notes Shelly: “Young couples today are more into experiences, like having a Starbrooke’s, than what color the flowers are or how the cake will be cut. It’s about creating an original, memorable experience.” Dinner included sauteed Florida grouper, Cambozola-crusted filet of beef, a trio of wedding-cake options, and amusing remarks by matron of honor Brittany, who joked: “I thought what I had was the wedding of the century, but no.” The following day, on Sunday, guests gathered at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, for a beachside brunch, which was far from a brief farewell. The final event was a full afternoon of casual seaside frolick, with beer, bathing suits, and booming dance tunes. Brooke and Tucker, who both work for Johnsonville Sausage, will live in Mequon, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee. But they plan to visit Naples often because they’re drawn to what the town represents, which is part of why they chose to get married on the Paradise Coast. “It thrills my heart to come here because we have so many great memories,” Brooke says. “We used to go to Fort Lauderdale to visit Tucker’s parents, but then we started coming here, too, and we love it. There’s an elegant European feel to downtown, but there’s also a very special warmth.” «

ou always recall your first time and wonder, could it last or lead to forever? In this instance, Jillian Haverkate dipped her toes into online dating. Grant Finlayson was the first man she noticed, and that was the last time she opened the app. This poster couple for dynamic, young professionals living in Miami got married in Naples last year, blending modern, stylish details with revered traditions. A website, a nautical logo, even their own hashtag (#4EverFinlayson), pushed the wedding plan to full throttle, while nostalgia kept their romance idling toward a sentimental slip. Jillian was a physician recruiter, and Grant was in medical school at Michigan State University when they met in Grand Rapids. It was the fall of 2015, and both were 24 years old. “We met the modern way,” she says. “A girlfriend downloaded Bumble [a dating app] and said, ‘Oh, look at this cute guy, Grant. He looks like a great family guy.’ He and I talked and agreed to meet fairly quickly. My sister, Diana, was so nervous that she said she’d have to track me. But he was a gentleman, very funny and kind. Our values and sense of family were very apparent.” Another common bond was that Jillian’s family were Michigan State alums, and the pair were ardent fans of its sports teams. Grant arrived for their first date wearing “bright, electric-blue pants and

a pea coat.” Thus, Diana deemed him a prime candidate for Jillian’s fashion sense. “We both were so nervous, but we had a nice meal” at a jam-packed local brewery, Jillian recalls. However, she cut the evening short because it was right before Thanksgiving, and she was leaving the next day to meet her family in Naples. “Grant asked whether I was interested in going out again, maybe the next weekend. After that, we were inseparable. It’s hard to realize we 58
met that way, but I can’t imagine being without him. I feel like I’ve known Grant my whole life.” Jillian’s career in human resources led to her current position at the University of Miami, and Grant is doing his anesthesiology residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Their wedding website read like a valentine to Naples, where they visit every possible weekend: “We are so excited to welcome you to one of our favorite cities,” it begins. “If you have some extra time to explore, here are a few
of our favorite spots.” On the list were hotels, attractions, and restaurants, including The Hampton Social, where the couple welcomed friends following their rehearsal. The wedding simply had to be in Naples, the vacation home for three generations of Jillian’s family. A backyard, harbor-side ceremony took place where her parents, Sheryl and Paul Haverkate, have wintered for six years. They knew the Aqua at Pelican Isle was a perfect backdrop for a sophisticated yet relaxed soiree. The Rev. Thomas Fountain, a friend from Grand Rapids, kept his remarks traditional yet personal. Family heirlooms had a “something old” role, as Jillian’s wedding ring had been a gift before her beloved grandmother passed away, and Grant’s ring had been his great-grandfather’s. She “borrowed” a bracelet Paul had given Sher-

A spontaneous outing with her parents led to Jillian finding her Vera Wang wedding gown and another dress for the reception. “They came over on their boat to surprise me and said, ‘Let’s go look in Chicago,’” recalls Jillian. The trip turned out to be a success, and she scored a must-have ivory, strapless gown with an embroidered motif on the bodice that resembles a family crest. “That unique detail caught my eye. It was so ‘me,’ my personality, my look, my feel.” Shopping for their daughter’s gown wasn’t the only surprise on deck. Jillian’s father and grandfather grew up in Michigan, and the waterways of Spring Lake were the wallpaper of her youth. Hence, the affinity for Naples’ boat-friendly surroundings—her father’s main requirement to live here.

Although Grant grew up in Texas, his parents, Kathleen and Richard Finlayson, live in Holland, Michigan, so their ties to Lake Michigan formed another bond between the two families. Once the couple began dating, Naples was a favorite destination for the Finlaysons as well. “We introduced them to the city,” Jillian says, “and now Grant feels like it’s his second home.” Her wedding plan began with an idea for a nautical logo, and she worked with Chicago artist Allie Hasson to personalize the image of a triangular flag suggestive of a yacht club— an optic to drive the overall aesthetic. The theme included bridesmaids’ dresses by Jenny Yoo, in a shade of blue-gray like the Gulf of Mexico and the horizon at dusk. The men wore formal threads from The Black Tux. The mother of the bride, Sheryl, meanwhile, donned a green, tailored “very nontraditional” dress by Carolina Herrera from Saks Fifth Avenue at the Waterside Shops in Naples. Instead of wedding gifts to each other, Jillian and Grant exchanged personalized cards. One was a pop-up of a kissing bride and groom seated in a boat on fair seas as grinning dolphins cavorted in the waves. After the ceremony, the couple boarded her father’s boat, Intrepid, with a “Just Married, Jillian & Grant” life preserver on the back, for a very short cruise to the almost-next-door reception. The captain tied up at the Pelican Isle Yacht Club, where offshore islets buffer the Gulf; the indoor vernacular is woods and nautical wall moldings; and watercolors of boats 60 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

suggest how easily one might drift off on a honeymoon. As the newlyweds and 100 guests arrived at the club, a custom neon sign aglow with “The Finlaysons” anchored an entry table. The aim was an intimate evening for family and friends, and Jillian and her mother worked with designer Jessica James of the Garden District in Naples to interpret her wishes for the venue. “Jessica had the artistic ability to truly transform the entire yacht-club space,” Sheryl says.

“She put everything together brilliantly but was very instrumental in keeping the design like it was Jillian’s own.” Sprays of white phalaenopsis orchids were the focal point, complemented with tropical monstera leaves, palm fronds, gold table accents, and custom place cards. Jillian’s initial caveat—“no flamingos”—followed her mother’s suggestion for an accent. She acquiesced and says now, “I wouldn’t have it any other way. The whole day was so fun.” Recalls Sheryl: “Paul and I wanted the wedding to be fun more than ‘perfect’ or anything else. Just as things slowed down, we surprised them with La Hora Loca, a blast of color and sound to stir the crowd into a frenzy of dancing. It was just the fun we were looking for.” Fun is an understatement for the Brazilian-style “crazy hour.” Performers crashed the party with stilt-walkers, exotic costumes, beads, masks, and Carnival-inspired moves. “My mom wanted a very memorable event, and she succeeded,” Jillian says. “She took over, we let loose, and it was the most fun surprise ever.” Prior to that zany eruption, there was music by Edith Diamond, a Southwest Florida band named for the great-
grandmother of two founding brothers. After the cocktail hour, guests dined on double entrées of luscious beef tenderloin with Béarnaise sauce, and Gulf grouper crowned in crispy leeks, served with carrot-wrapped asparagus and dauphinoise potatoes. The feast began with mixed greens, roasted teardrop tomatoes, sliced cucumber, carrot curls, candied almonds, shaved Manchego, ciabatta croutons, and a mango-Champagne vinaigrette. For dessert, Jillian opted for “a different approach”—a smaller cake and multiple sweet temptations—after which, she and Grant prepared to fly to Portugal for their honeymoon. Online dating had floated into the past, and it was high time to begin #4EverFinlayson. «

Even a dish as humble as French toast gets the royal treatment at Sails on Fifth Avenue South. “This is a classic I always order when I travel,” says co-owner Veljko Pavicevic. “I wanted to create a version I hadn’t eaten in the past.” His solution was to soak slices of French baguettes in Grand Marnier–infused custard and bake them until golden brown. Topped with locally grown berries and finished with small-batch, 100-percent natural maple syrup from a farm owned by the chef’s cousin, the toast is crusty on the outside with a soft, pudding-like center. It is on offer as part of the combined lunch/brunch menu, available daily through May 12, or during the year-round Sunday brunch, when diners can indulge in a threecourse feast with unlimited Champagne Louis Roederer. Invasion of the TIFFINS

The tiffins have invaded Naples, but don’t panic: They’re not fire-breathing dragons from Middle-earth. Native to the cuisine of India, a tiffin is a series of circular, stainless-steel containers (usually four) that are stacked and used to deliver meals. They’re featured in the new menu additions at Mantra, the Pan-Asian restaurant at the Naples Grande Beach Resort. Miami chef Niven Patel, a James Beard Award semi-finalist from the Chandi Hospitality Group, developed the dishes inside the tins. “The tiffin plays an important role in our culture’s roots of home-cooked meals,” says Patel. “It allows [for] bringing a meal to another home, a workplace, or really anywhere else.” At Mantra, the layers of the tiffin begin with pumpkin seed naan, a leavened flatbread popular in many West Asian nations. This is followed by Persian cucumber salad with curry leaf dressing and a section devoted to cumin Basmati rice. The final level gives the diner a choice of chicken tikka masala, coconut shrimp curry, or paneer tikka masala, a vegetarian option made with a nonmelting soft cheese.
Mantra, which opened in 2018 and is located inside the hotel’s lobby, also serves dishes from Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. The open kitchen gives guests the chance to watch chefs at work while also sipping a local beer, craft cocktail, or selection from the sake list. “As this partnership grows over the next few months, we’ll be surprising guests and locals with an ever-evolving menu,” says Patel. “Naples has a booming culinary scene, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to share my style of home cooking with a new audience.” (naples grande.com/dining)

Feast for the Eyes Sisters Kris Thornhill and Jennifer Wardlaw encourage their customers to “get their graze on,” and they’re willing to do all the work to make it happen. Thornhill and Wardlaw operate locations of A Grazing Plate in Naples and Chattanooga, Tennessee, respectively. For Thornhill, the new business represents a hobby gone wild. While she always enjoyed arranging artistic trays for dinner guests, her moment of awakening occurred when she filled a pizza box with charcuterie and brought it to a ladies’ happy hour. “The response was overwhelming,” she recalls. “People eat with their eyes, and I realized there was a demand for beautifully presented platters.” She sources her ingredients from local markets, with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal, and organic fare. Her arrangements come in three sizes: small boxes for two, larger boxes and boards that feed six, and tables that can accommodate 30 or more. Prices start at $85 for a small box and range up to $16.50 per person for a basic table, with add-ons and upgrades available. Every order can be customized according to the customer’s preference, and special diets are accommodated. “There’s a proliferation of glutenfree products on the market now,” Thornhill says. “For vegans, there are chickpea spreads and guacamole, along with some really tasty and spreadable nut-based cheeses. We work with people to get them exactly what they want.” While her platters are almost irresistible fodder for Instagram, Thornhill reminds customers not to forget to eat them. Her motto? “There’s an old saying that I read somewhere: ‘People need to understand the difference between wants and needs; I want abs but I need salami.’” (agrazingplate.co)

At the mention of curry, most foodies think of India, while a few might associate it with Japan. Fewer still would identify it as a favorite of the Japanese navy. The dish, however, is a Friday staple in the galleys and mess halls of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, and each ship has its own closely guarded recipe. Curry traveled from India to Japan via the British Navy, who discovered that it helped to ward off beriberi when served to sailors (thiamine was the magic ingredient, although this was unknown at the time). From there, it became popular with the public. The Japanese version usually features beef and is far less spicy than its Indian counterpart, with a thick consistency and a sweet-and-sour flavor enhanced with turmeric, cumin, coriander, and cardamom. Japanese curry has now arrived in Naples at Namba, the innovative restaurant operated by chef Koko Hermkhunthod, who appren-

ticed in Japan under some of the country’s most prominent chefs. Tender sirloin cubes are simmered with carrots, potatoes, and peas in a savory sauce that derives sweetness from caramelized onions and mangoes. “This dish is rarely found on restaurant menus in Japan,” says Hermkhunthod. “It really represents the epitome of Japanese home cooking, and we wanted to share that comfort food with our customers.” (nambanaples.com)

The best warm-weather cocktails follow the low-proof trend of the moment. Composed of top-quality ingredients and featuring minimal alcohol, they are classics that never seem to go out of style. FRENCH SPRITZ: Move over, Aperol spritz, because this supercharged version of the St-Germain cocktail is poised to surpass you in popularity. Combine club soda, Champagne or sparkling wine, and St-Germain with Suze, a French liqueur distilled from macerated gentian roots. PIMM’S CUP: Invented in 1820s London, Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is a 25-percent gin-based liqueur infused with a secret blend of herbs and citrus. Mixed with club soda, Sprite, or English lemonade, it’s usually served with a bouquet of garnishes: apples, cucumbers, oranges, lemons, strawberries, and mint. Wimbledon attendees consume 80,000 pints each year at the annual tennis tournament, and it tastes just as good on your front porch. NEGRONI SBAGLIATO: Sbagliato means “mistake,” and legend has it this drink came about when a bartender reached for a bottle of Spumante instead of gin. Proceed as you would for a Negroni (equal parts Campari, sweet vermouth, and sparkling wine in place of gin) and you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing cocktail and a clear head. MICHELADA: For the ultimate beertail, combine a 12-ounce Mexican beer with the juice of two limes, two teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce, two teaspoons of Tabasco, a teaspoon of Maggi (if you can find it), ice, and coarse salt. Add your favorite tomato-based juice (V-8, Clamato, etc.) to taste. Rim the glass with salt as you would for a margarita. The pinch of salt in the drink itself will ensure balance. DIPLOMAT: For the essence of simplicity, mix two parts dry vermouth with one part sweet, and add dashes of maraschino liqueur and orange bitters. The trick is to only use bottles from the top shelf: Carpano Antica Formula sweet vermouth, Dolin or Noilly Prat Original Dry, and Luxardo maraschino. Top it off with club soda for a variation called the Addington.

SANGRIA: If you’ve only had lousy sangria, rest assured it was made with lousy ingredients. A foolproof formula includes one bottle of decent Rioja (Crianza is fine), one cup brandy, one cup Cointreau or triple sec, one cup orange juice, one cup lemon juice, and club soda to taste. Marinate your favorite fruits in the mixture for the better part of a day. Those who prefer white wine can use a Spanish vino from Rueda or Jumilla. For something with a boozier kick, the best summer libations are the mojito, Bee’s Knees, mint julep, and paloma. Consider the Martinez as a middle ground. This nineteenth-century forerunner of the martini follows the pre-Prohibition practice of de-emphasizing the main spirit in favor of the supporting ingredients. Use an ounce of gin (preferably Old Tom), an ounce of sweet vermouth, and dashes of Curaçao (or maraschino) and bitters; think of it as a Manhattan with gin in place of whiskey. «

May and June were too distant for planning, as the uncertain impacts of COVID-19 remained vastly unknown. From galas to author talks, gatherings large and small were canceled or postponed, creating a domino effect expected to affect artists, performers, and institutions well into May and June—and, potentially, beyond.

Raymond L. Lutgert, founder of The Lutgert Companies, was the visionary Naples developer behind Park Shore, the first planned-unit development in the state. Lutgert was also a community leader, philanthropist, and awardwinning sculptor whose works are on display throughout the area, including at the Village Shops on Venetian Bay and the Northern Trust building. Over at Florida Gulf Coast University, Lutgert’s 24-foot-tall Human Race greets visitors near the campus entrance at the Lutgert College of Business. FGCU, in fact, boasts numerous outdoor sculptures—12 total—that reflect their locations within the institution. The couple behind Hoffmann Family of Companies—a Naples real estate and business juggernaut—are art lovers. They’re sharing this love with the community through the donation of a dozen original works to Naples’ downtown area. Jim Rennert, a New York City–based sculptor, created many of the downtown installations. Known for his life-size and monumental works, Rennert frequently plays with motifs associated with corporate success, such as men in suits. Others are by Ruth Bloch, an Israeli artist whose figural sculptures have been displayed around the world. In addition to the Hoffmann donations, there are many more works that have graced the scene for a while, as well as several located within building interiors. The historic Fort Myers downtown district has an array of public art capturing the various people and groups who played critical roles in the town’s history. Outside the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, art explorers can view The Caloosahatchee Manuscripts, created in 2001 by artist Jim Sanborn (who is also responsible for the Kryptos sculpture at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia). It comprises two brass cylinders, lit from the inside, with writing that is cast onto the building and sidewalk. The cylinder on the left (when facing the building) is a list of the Latin names for the various plants Thomas Edison collected in the area during his search for a carbon-based source of light-bulb filament. The other contains the story of the Seminole migration to the region in their native language. (sbdac.com) Over at Centennial Park, Uncommon Friends depicts Edison, Henry Ford, and Harvey Firestone as they exchange ideas while relaxing by a campfire. Made by local artist D.J. Wilkins, the cold-cast aluminum sculpture features native plants and animals as well as a 40-foot-diameter fountain. It acts as the centerpiece of the 10-acre park and pays homage to a book of the same name detailing the inventors’ friendship, collaborations, and camping trips.

Colby Robertson first began visiting Naples for spring break and Thanksgiving with her family in 1985. Fastforward to 2011, and the Minnesota native made the Paradise Coast her full-time home. The former TV reporter, who earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and psychology from the University of Miami, now serves as the executive director of Wellfit Girls, a Naples-based nonprofit dedicated to the wellness and empowerment of female teens. In addition to racking up an array of racing ribbons and completing the 2019 TransRockies sixday race, Robertson counts being named the 2014 Young Professional of the Year by the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce as one of her proudest moments. —Caroline Ridgway
