The Forbes Best in State Wealth Advisor ranking algorithm is based on industry experience, interviews, compliance records, assets under management, revenue and other criteria by SHOOK Research, LLC, which does not receive compensation from the advisors or their firms in exchange for placement on a ranking. Investment performance is not a criterion. Barron’s Top 1,200 Advisors rankings are based on data provided by thousand of advisors. Factors included in the rankings were assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, length of service, quality of practice and client retention.

FROM THE EDITOR
MEGAN DIPIERO
The Couture of Confidence I love contrast, which is one of the many things that appeals to me about the Paradise Coast. Whether it’s a swamp buggy parade ambling down a street near multimillion-dollar homes or the world’s most decadent milkshake served alongside a tahini cauliflower salad (I’m talking to you, Lake Park Diner), Naples is resplendent with dichotomy. And that, to me, makes things fun. In this issue, we pay homage not only to the sartorial prowess of five local gentlemen but also to their commitment to career, family, and giving back. Speaking of contradiction, you might think that a corporate titan like Ralph Stayer, owner of Johnsonville Sausage, would be a man of solemn carriage. But put him in a velvet dinner jacket and Ferragamo shades, and he’s all swagger and smiles. Then there’s Ron Ciesla, who’s buttoned up à la boardroom as a Northern Trust senior vice president but pairs Bermuda shorts with a Brooks Brothers blazer on weekends. Their stories, as well as those of our other admirable Men of Style—Jamie Dockweiler, Ken Kelly, and Dominic Lacquaniti—begin on page 76. Our nod to natty Neapolitans continues on page 86 with a fashion illustrator’s interpretation of socialite chic, which ranges from shimmering designer separates to cocktaillength chemises. Collier County embraces casual elegance as well as couture, and the contrast of laid-back luxury is what lures many to the Gulf. It takes confidence, mind you, to wear slacks to a glitterati-packed charity ball. But last year at a gala, after seeing a grande dame announce a $5 million donation in unpretentious black pants, I knew that I’d moved to a place that had nothing to prove. Style also takes shape in the ingenuity of frequent hosts, such as Naples native Bob Edwards and his wife, Terry. They’ve spent a decade creating exquisite evenings as part of the Naples Winter Wine Festival, which raised more than $20 million in January for the Naples Children & Education Foundation. Turn to page 90 to learn which treasured item from Italy appears at all of the couple’s parties. Stars such as Billy Joel, Raquel Welch, and Glenn Close, meanwhile, have expressed their signature style by signing stemware that’ll be sold March 14 at the Celebrity Martini Glass Auction. Rock legend John Lodge of the Moody Blues discusses his connection to the event, which has benefited veterans’ charities for 10 years, in our Insider section that starts on page 35. We hope you enjoy this issue the Paradise Coast way, perhaps with your toes in the sand by the Naples Pier after a night on the town in the latest Christian Louboutins.

Anthony J. Cetrangelo Jr. Wills, Trusts and Estates Law
When Our Clients Want Advice On Planning for the Future, the First Thing I Do Is Listen. What drives Anthony as a wills, trusts and estates attorney is that no two cases, or clients, are ever alike. Q&A
Ready, Set, ROCK! CHARLIE MCDONALD PHOTOGRAPHY
John Lodge has seen and done it all across his music career. The 74-year-old Englishman is best known as the bassist, singer, and songwriter for the Moody Blues, a legendary band that was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. But for all the rock memorabilia he’s accumulated, Lodge counts a pair of World War I medals his grandfathers passed down to him as his most-cherished possessions. These keepsakes hint at the reason why he views his involvement with the Celebrity Martini Glass Auction as more
035_INSIDER_0320.indd 35
than just his civic duty. Lodge, who is participating in the Naplesbased event for the second year, will team up with AC/DC bassist Cliff Williams to auction off a private show in support of CMGA’s primary mission: raising funds to benefit veterans’ organizations. The auction, an invite-only gathering taking place March 14 at Artis— Naples, has raised more than $4 million for local charities since 2008, with $3 million going toward veterans’ causes. INSIDER Ready, Set, ROCK! NI: Why is the mission of CMGA so personal to you? Lodge: Being English, my family has literally been through wars twice. I’ve seen the damage, injuries, deaths, and everything else. What everyone puts themselves through to maintain our freedom is really important. After being in Afghanistan or Iraq or wherever, a lot of the boys and girls have a lot of problems. We need to help out and show appreciation for what they’ve given. There really isn’t any generation that has been spared. When we first came over and toured America in the ’60s, there was us playing a concert, having a great time with lots of young people, and there were these other young people coming back from Vietnam, getting shot at and everything else. It was a very strange time. Surreal, really. We all used to travel at night [on the same flights]. We’d talk to them about what they were going through, and the connection was there all the while. I talked to my father and uncles about what they went through, and they told me what their parents went through. It’s horrendous. So, it’s important that we say thank you. In addition to joining other celebrities in lending your autographs to the martini glass– centered works of art, you and Cliff Williams will auction off a private concert again this year. How did that partnership come about?
From left: 10.68-carat Burma sapphire ring; 2.12-carat natural light pink diamond ring.

At the auction last year, I went over to Cliff and said, “Why don’t you and I just put ourselves up as an auction item, and we’ll perform at someone’s house?” It ended up being such a big event that we actually put on a [real show] at Kalea Bay. I managed to get Jon Davison of Yes to come along as well. I got some local musicians, who were fantastic, to come along. Everyone had a great time. This year, Cliff and I are going to put ourselves up again as an auction item. I think this time it’ll be even bigger, hopefully. You’ve said in recent years that you still believe in the transformative power of music; how do you feel the Moody Blues did this? We used to say in the ’60s, “Take you on a trip.” It was to try to move you away from the trials and aggravations of the day. You can do it with music. That’s what the Moody Blues tried to do. Take the listener on a journey. Does the message in your music remain the same today? It’s exactly the same. I play every day. I actually was just working on a new song when you

called. I just enjoy it. I think there’s something very special about it. Everybody’s got their own take on life, and mine is to make music and hopefully to make people happy. Does life on the road ever get old? I don’t think you ever get tired of touring if you really love what you do. Even if you’ve traveled all day and the flights have been canceled and you have to make all sorts of arrangements, as soon as you get on stage, the energy from the audience reinvigorates you. You just want to give your best. We’re all there for the music.
ALL THAT GLITTERS
National Jewel Day is March 13, an apropos time to ask Jarred Kaplan, managing partner of Provident Jewelry, about what’s hot—and what’s not. Diamonds are still a girl’s best friend, particularly in blue, pink, or a strand of many. Fancy blue diamonds are in demand, while pinks remain as popular as ever. From blueberry to glittering azure to dark grey (think: Hope Diamond), natural blue diamonds are rare, the result of trace amounts of boron. Blue diamonds are second only to red, with a buy-in of $500,000 for a “reasonably sized” one. Last year, a $6.7 million blue diamond ring fetched the highest bid during Christie’s New York Magnificent Jewels auction. In 2015, the 12.03-carat Blue Moon of Josephine became
the most expensive diamond or jewel ever sold at auction at $48.4 million. Because blue is on fire, it’s no surprise that blue sapphires from Burma and Cashmere are in high demand, too. “Blue is a very calming color,” Kaplan says. “Blue gives you that relaxed, pleasant feeling, like looking at the ocean.” Tennis bracelets have come back in the form of a tennis necklace—a continuous set of 100 to 200 diamonds. Even Kaplan seems awed that he sells a dozen each month in season. “We’re now referring to them as a diamond chain,” he notes. “A tennis necklace was previously worn to high-end events or unique functions. Now they’re wearing them every day—even literally to play tennis.” (providentjewelry.com) —Cathy Chestnut

Name: Donna McGinnis Day job: President and CEO of Naples Botanical Garden Passion: Marching bands How it started: I was in the band in high school, and we did a few parades, but the school was so new—my class was the second one to graduate—that we only had T-shirts, not uniforms. I played the clarinet, saxophone, and oboe, and then I stopped after I went to college. But I’ve always just loved marching bands, especially college bands. I went to Washington State University, and they have a great band, but I watch videos of Ohio State all the time. I’ll go on YouTube and watch one of their halftime shows 38
over and over. And bowl games! People think I’m ridiculous, but I really don’t care about the game—just the bands. Why it’s special: The precision, the teamwork, the sound. Everything. But wait, there’s more: When I lived in St. Louis [the Seattle native is a former senior vice president of the Missouri Botanical Garden], I had the chance to work on a fundraising project for a drum and bugle corps from an economically distressed school. There was a group of alumni who had been in the corps, and they just took so much pride in it. There are plenty of negative things to do after school, but music is so positive, and that’s something to celebrate and support. —Loretta Grantham

Mediterranean Goes MODERN DESIGN
Art and symmetry take CENTER STAGE in this chic Naples home By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Rick Bethem Photography When the owners of this home in the Estuary at Grey Oaks in Naples decided to personalize their 4,000-square-foot property so that it expressed their artistic sensibilities, they called upon Dwayne Bergmann to realize their vision. “The home’s architecture is Mediterranean, but they wanted it furnished in a modern style,” says Bergmann, principal of Fort Myers–
051_ABODE2_0320.indd 51
based Dwayne Bergmann Interiors. “The color palette is primary colors with an emphasis on orange. I brought in a lot of the color through their artwork and accessories that I found primarily at Art Basel. The art and accessories are the focus of this very symmetrical home.” The foyer captures Bergmann’s vision, complete with stained-wood stairway posts with
limestone bands and a multi-light pendant that illuminates limestone flooring, which runs throughout the residence. A trio of large, highly textured flower pots with living plants divides a huge living space into two separate seating areas. “The flower pots add an additional organic component and perfectly balance the reds, blues, purples, NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2020

and orange that are a complete spectrum of color, explains Bergmann. On one side, a pair of clean-lined chaise sofas offer a white canvas upon which custom pillows outfitted in Pucci scarves can shine. A beige, brown, and gray wool rug further defines the area. Built-in shelves flank a linear fireplace and are backed by mirrors that showcase the art and personal mementos. Elsewhere, a tall settee and mustard-yellow leather ottoman form a focal point for an intimate conversation space. In the great room, a large, white sectional with bright orange pillows in a variety of sizes invites relaxation. The massive, stained-maple media cabinet boasts an eye-catching orange background, which the designer decided to offset with white and green accessories. “Consistency of style in the room and a

lot of mirroring with similar pieces create a very balanced look,” says Bergmann. “I also wanted the space to feel very inclusive of the outdoor area. Pocketed doors overlooking the pool and golf course open up on two sides of the space. Transom windows bring in additional light and allow greenery to come in.” Bergmann went with a layered approach for the airy kitchen, opting for two unique looks for the cabinetry. The upper cabinets are twotone, featuring an off-white material framed in espresso maple. These pieces lighten the space and contrast nicely with the dark lower cabinets. A capiz shell backsplash provides an organic feel, while square-shaped, stainlesssteel barstools—which tuck discreetly under the granite island when not in use—hint toward a more urban aesthetic. “Clear glass globes allow the eye to freely flow through the kitchen without any impedance,” adds Bergmann. “They are a nice lighting feature without being cumbersome.” The master bedroom presents a demure symphony of textures and fabrics. The lush bedding has natural variations that complement the walnut detailing in the full-height headboard. This material, which reappears in the bed base and 54
nightstand tables, pairs well with the creamy color of the carpet and window and wall treatments, thus establishing an appealing monochromatic feel. The room’s symmetry also creates harmony and suggests a sense of comfort. As a whole, the master bedroom is a breath of fresh air that makes way for the clients’ artwork to have a big visual impact. “Artwork makes this room,” notes Bergmann. “The wallpaper allows the pops of color in the art to be more vivid.” The wallpaper in the master bath echoes the three-dimensional artwork positioned on either side of the soaking tub. In the evening, the candle

holders provide an ambient light source that reflects off of the walls. Once again, balance plays a key role in establishing peace and tranquility. The home’s Spanish bones are on full display in the exterior living area. Here, the outdoor furnishings mimic the modern pieces located inside and blend flawlessly with the romantic architecture and garden elements. The stingray shade sculpture over the outdoor loungers is made from marine-grade materials and is as tough as it is appealing.

While this property exudes an appealing universality that would speak to any sophisticated homeowner, Bergmann points out that his professional joy came from catering to his clients’ preferences and requests. “For me, the essence of this project is my experience with the owners,” he says. “Their vibrant and avant-garde personalities are expressed through the nature of the art and the boldness of the color in the home. I love being able to walk in the home and feel their personalities.” «

BLING RING Real lapis lazuli takes center stage on these scene-stealing napkin rings ($76 for set of two) from Joanna Buchanan. Summerfields, Naples (summerfieldsnaples.com) RISE AND SHINE Designer Rebecca Masterson of Marc-Michaels Interior Design delivered a splash of glamour to this Naples bedroom by juxtaposing metallic accents, including a mirrored starburst accessory, with moody hues. “We wanted this guest room to feel sophisticated,” she says. “We opted for a darkstained headboard wall and tall, white, lacquered chests on either side of the upholstered bed. The pop of polished nickel in the lighting and starburst mirror added contrast on that wall and some much needed sparkle. A fun mirror over a bed is always a great idea.” Winter Park (marc-michaels.com)

FRUITFUL Ventures
Potted fruit trees can bring pizzazz to any patio, so brush up on your horticultural knowledge with our primer on planting these beauties By Liza Grant Smith “The sky is the limit with fruit trees in Southwest Florida,” says Brian Galligan. As vice president of horticulture at the Naples Botanical Garden, his passion for fruit-bearing trees runs deep—and he often takes his work home with him. In fact, several hundred fruit trees populate his 5-acre property. For those lacking that type of space, however, potted fruit trees positioned on a patio pose an attractive option. Here, Galligan shares his top potted picks for the patio and how to care for them. (naplesgarden.org)
While Galligan notes that most of these trees will be available at local garden centers, his favorite store is FruitScapes Nursery on Pine Island. (fruitscapesllc.com)
SELECTING A TREE Not all fruit trees flourish when contained. Some, such as lychee and jackfruit, aren’t suitable for potting because they want to grow large; others, like mango and avocado, can grow in a container depending on the cultivar or variety, explains Galligan. Research carefully and consult with your local garden center, which may be able to order a tree not already in stock. His favorites for potting include: Miracle Fruit The red berries of this tree, which originated in West Africa, actually trick the taste buds. Sour foods like lemons and limes, when eaten immediately after consuming Miracle Fruit, will taste sweet. “This is one of the most fun plants someone in Naples could put in a container,” says Galligan. “People actually grow them and then do tastings with their friends.” Dwarf Everbearing Mulberry This tree produces tiny mulberries that taste delicious as snacks or toppings on cereal, oatmeal, or yogurt. “It produces multiple crops per year,” notes Galligan. “That, to me, is a winner.” Finger Lime Also known as caviar limes, this tree yields
small pods of citrus containing tiny spheres that burst with flavor. “Many people have written off citrus because there are so many diseases out there, especially citrus greening,” Galligan explains. “Finger limes are from Australia and are completely immune to greening.” Papaya Galligan believes this plant bears the biggest reward. “It’s going to produce the most fruit of anything you put in a container, and it’s a pretty attractive plant,” he says. Coffee While this plant may not grow a cup of joe, its novelty provides plenty of fodder for conversation. “It’s easy to grow, and it has very fragrant flowers followed by attractive red or yellow fruit,” Galligan says.
POTTING YOUR PLANT A robust patio tree starts with the container and “bigger is always better,” Galligan says. Aim to pot the tree in at least a 5-to-7-gallon container after teasing the root ball apart. He recommends lining the bottom of the pot with gravel and a screen to keep the gravel from filling with soil after each watering. “You can always give it more water, but if it’s not draining, you’re going to get a root rot situation,” he says. A mid-grade potting mix “not all peat, not all sand” with a high-quality, slowrelease fertilizer will give the plant more resilience to the elements and protect against overwatering and underwatering. For optimal drainage, elevate the container off the patio surface, even just slightly. “The best scenario, however, is to put it on coasters to roll it around when needed.” 60 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
060_INSPIREDLIVING_0320.indd 60
2/4/20 2:20 PM
LOVING CARE Ensure a successful bounty from your fruit tree with proper sun exposure and watering. “Deep waterings are better than light, frequent waterings,” says Galligan. “You want to reach the bottom of the container, and you also want the water to leave. With more drainage, you’ll have to water more often, but it’s better for the plant.” Leaf drops usually signify too much water, though it could also mean the tree isn’t getting enough sun, a vital element for producing fruit. Fruit-bearing trees may also attract unwanted critters. Prevent an animal from stealing your bounty by learning when fruit is ripe and picking just before their prime.
GET INVOLVED The Naples area boasts a large community of passionate fruit tree growers. Nonprofit organizations such as the Collier Fruit Growers Council (collierfruit.org) offer educational resources and support from other gardeners. Membership costs $15 per family, and the council meets every third Tuesday of the month for informative lectures and fruit tastings. Galligan’s final word of advice before diving into this sweet world: “Beware. It’s very addictive.”

From Nevis to St. Barths, discover a fresh but familiar wave of island-chic accommodations, underscored by these renewed LUXURY PROPERTIES By Paul Rubio
FOUR SEASONS RESORT NEVIS Change isn’t a common thing on Nevis, a 36-square-mile, lost-in-time volcanic island of the Lesser Antilles archipelago—and that’s exactly its charm. Travelers come here for a predictably great escape from the modern world and to embrace the ruin-strewn hillsides, untouched beaches, and unfussy, barefoot luxury. But despite this love affair with the Caribbean

of yesteryear, there’s one major upgrade on this sleepy isle that everyone’s applauding: the transformation of the iconic Four Seasons Resort Nevis. Following a multiyear, multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion, Nevis’ grand dame reemerged in December 2019, infusing a contemporary edge into its classic surroundings. What remains is the architectural and design integrity of the resort’s exteriors; the cherished, lowNAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2020

rise, plantation-style cottages have simply been refreshed to their initial grandeur. Just about everything else, however, is different. First of all, each of the 189 guest rooms and suites has been reimagined to represent different facets of Nevis, past and present. Walls are cushioned in fabrics that pay homage to the island’s British influence, inspired by the rich botanical patterns of nineteenth-century England. Furnishings flaunt embroidered inlays depicting local flora and fauna, including Nevis’ resident, mischievous monkeys. The soft color palette blends with the blues and greens of the shoreline, accentuating the tropical views through floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The redesigned Great House is a feat in transitional indoor-outdoor living, with breezy interiors overlooking the resort’s new centerpiece infinity-edged pool. From above, the Limin Pool creates an optical illusion of extending into the Caribbean Sea. From below, it’s the perfect spot to grab a lounger, order a few
cocktails, and listen to the waves or the vibeheavy music. (Bonus: At times, this pool features an amphibious DJ and bartender, so prepare to drink and dance in the water.) Finally, look forward to new restaurants and bar concepts such as a floating pop-up bar at the tip of the Four Seasons’ pier, where the panoramas are sure to set your social media on fire. Arrive hungry for meals at Mediterranean-infused EsQuilina and On the Dune, where ocean-to-table and farm-totable meet over sublime vistas. Also, don’t miss the Crowned Monkey Rum Bar for pre- or postdinner rum libations or flights that will take your palate on a journey across the Caribbean. For those wondering what else remains of the original Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indian restaurant Mango is still serving its famous lobster fritters and seared local wahoo— albeit in a repositioned and expanded area. The celebrated 18-hole, par-71, Robert Trent Jones II–designed golf course is just as you remember, as are the ball-chasing green vervet monkeys. In total, the property oozes new life throughout a familiar space, achieving what every reinvented icon covets: the ultimate balance of old and new. (fourseasons.com/nevis)

HOTEL LE TOINY AND LE SERENO SAINT BARTHÉLEMY While parts of St. Barths continue to recover from 2017’s Hurricane Irma, the exclusive Hotel Le Toiny and Le Sereno Saint Barthélemy are officially back—and more exquisite than ever. Ultra-private hideaway Hotel Le Toiny returns along St. Barths’ less-explored Côte Sauvage (Wild Coast) with a revamp of its 14 original freestanding villas along with eight newly constructed villa suites, a beachfront pool added to the Toiny Beach Club, and a new signature restaurant, Jarad. The now 22-villa collection possesses an effortless elegance synonymous with noted British designer Bee Osborn. Suites are kitted out in light-wood furnishings and draped in soothing whites and creamy neutrals, delicately framing breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea. Step outside onto the expansive terrace and

discover a full-sized swimming pool—each villa has its own—ideal for private languishing during your St. Barths holiday. This study in au courant coastal excellence continues down on Toiny Bay, where a new beachfront pool and chaise lounge–lined deck complement a toes-in-the-sand beach bar and waterfront palapas. Come evening, the beach club ambience moves up to Le Toiny’s hilltop reception area, where DJs spin house music, an easy-on-the-eyes crowd sips artisan cocktails like truffle-infused negronis, and award-winning chef Jarad McCarroll serves up contemporary global cuisine at his eponymous eatery. Another favorite back on the haute hotel scene is Le Sereno Saint Barthélemy, which has reopened its all-suite enclave on Grand Cul de Sac Beach with a look similar to its pre-hurricane incarnation. As impressive as these suites are, they’re crafted to highlight the azure seas and skies, with unembellished white walls that guide your eye outward.
Between the design and subtle amenities like high-thread-count linens, toiletries specially made for the hotel, and welcome Havaianas sandals, Le Sereno truly embodies understated luxury. What’s more, you’ll love the stellar service and Italian flair at the resort’s on-site beach club, sprawling pool deck, and new Al Mare restaurant. Prized staff from Le Sereno’s sister property in Lake Como, Il Sereno Lago di Como, have crossed the Atlantic to bring their expertise to St. Barths. Antarctica As we pulled away from terra firma at Ushuaia, Argentina (the very southern tip of South America), and started our way through the Beagle Channel, we were summoned to the Main Lounge for our first official expedition briefing. Allie, our expedition leader, encouraged us to forget everything we had read in the brochures pertaining to this itinerary because every encounter after this moment would be an adventure. And what an adventure it was! From the first iceberg sighting at sea to the magical stillness in secret bays of the Antarctic peninsula, each and every day revealed just how magnificent and unspoiled the 7th continent truly is. Nantucket beckons with natural beauty, enchanting towns, and a boatload of history By Daphne Nikolopoulos
MICHAEL GALVIN
Clockwise from above: White Elephant sprawls along Nantucket Harbor; Brant Point Light; the Coatue Suite at The Wauwinet; historic houses.
It’s never too early to start dreaming of summer days on Nantucket. For island regulars, those fantasies inevitably star the White Elephant, a landmark resort established in the 1920s. Situated in town a few steps from Nantucket Harbor, it beckons visitors with cedar-shingled cottages, sprawling lawns that tumble down to the water, and a relaxed, family-friendly lifestyle. While it exudes charm and luxury, this Nantucket property is also so steeped in New England tradition that you can feel the history in every cobblestone and each nautical flagpole. The White Elephant is an excellent base from which to explore the quaint town on foot or by bike. The slower pace—a must here— lets Nantucket unfold organically, revealing maritime vistas, museums, mom-and-pop shops (no chains are allowed), and unassuming eateries serving epic lobster rolls and fried clams. Here are our recommendations for the perfect day. (whiteelephantnantucket.com)
BREAKFAST BY THE HARBOR: Brant Point Grill, located right on the harbor, is the place for lobster everything, so why not incorporate the luscious crustacean into every meal? Claim a table on the covered terrace and enjoy lobster eggs benedict alfresco. 68
SHOP AND SIP: You can easily spend an
entire day browsing the shops of Nantucket’s historic district. These locally owned gems offer treasures you won’t find in mall stores, or even outside of Nantucket. Nantucket Looms’(nantucketlooms.com) handmade blankets and textiles are woven on-site and evocative of the island’s muted landscape. The Artists Association of Nantucket (nantucketarts.org) hosts art classes and operates a gallery featuring works by area artists. Pick up a straw hat at Peter Beaton (peterbeaton.com) and Nantucketspecific tomes at Mitchell’s Book Corner (mitchellsbookcorner.com). Between stops, visit The Bean (nantucketcoffee.com) for locally roasted espresso or Nativ Made (nativmade. com) for cold-pressed juices.
EXPLORE ISLAND HISTORY: In the nineteenth century, Nantucket was the epicenter of the whaling industry. Its notorious origins are on display at the Nantucket Whaling Museum (nha.org), housed in an old whale-oil candle factory. The artifacts, including jars of whale oil, an array of scrimshaw (carved whale ivory), and the suspended skeleton of a 46-foot sperm whale, provide a fascinating snapshot of early island life. TAKE A PICNIC: Barton & Gray Mariners
Club (bartonandgray.com) charters its picnic boats for an afternoon (or day) on the water. Board one from the White Elephant docks and go off on a whale-sighting expedition or a beach picnic at Tuckernuck. In the evening, visit the White Elephant’s venerated sister resort, The Wauwinet (wauwinet.com), for dinner at Topper’s, an island favorite. The recently renovated Wauwinet, the only Relais & Châteaux hotel in Nantucket, upped the ante on luxury amenities and decor. The most impressive change is in the three-bedroom Anchorage House, reimagined by Serena & Lily as a bright, breezy beach cottage with navy and sand hues inspired by the coastal setting. «

The New Jersey native often vacationed in Aspen with her family, but, in the late 1990s, they decided that the town had gotten too frenetic and celebrity-focused, so they turned their attention to Telluride. Aston Martin’s 2020 DBS SUPERLEGGERA VOLANTE celebrates open-top V-12 excitement By Howard Walker
P
onder this factoid for a second: The top speed of Aston Martin’s new, breathtakingly gorgeous, 715-horsepower DBS Superleggera Volante convertible is 211 mph. That in itself is pretty impressive. If my math is correct, at that pace this thundering Aston can cover the length of a football field in about one second. Now, what’s really impressive is Aston Martin’s claim that the flagship DBS can attain this speed with that curvy canvas top lowered. That’s correct: 211 mph, top down. As much as I wanted to verify that assertion during my adrenaline-charged week with this $335,000 British bundle of turbocharged joy, fear of an interaction with Florida’s finest highway patrollers kept my right foot in check. But even at 120 mph with the top down (on a private closed road with professional supervision, officer) piloting this beast is a high-decibel, tire-roaring, follicle-loosening experience. I can’t imagine what it’d be like with another 91 miles on the speedometer.
74
As an aside, if anyone finds a dark blue baseball cap anywhere along I-75—sadly, I can’t remember the exact location where it blew off— kindly return it. Of course, no one in their right mind would drive the Aston at 211 mph topless. The point is, if you wanted to, you could. Here, after all, is the fastest soft-top in Aston Martin’s 107-year history and arguably the world’s quickest 2+2 roadster. Part of what accounts for this velocity is also what makes this car so special: its mighty, hand-built 5.2-liter twin-turbo V-12 nuclear reactor under that mile-long hood. It’s one amazing feat of engineering. Capable of delivering a massive 664 lb-ft of torque from just 1,800 rpm, it can catapult the Aston from standstill to 60 mph in a mere 3.5 seconds. Yet with supercars turning to electric power to deliver astonishing performance, I feel the days of big 12-cylinder engines are numbered. Think of this DBS as one spectacular last hurrah.

JAMIE DOCKWEILER The Family Man
As one of the lone men in the crowd at Hats in the Garden—the Naples Botanical Garden’s November event that acts as the unofficial kickoff to season—Jamie Dockweiler is used to standing out. Dockweiler, who dons a hat from his forays to the Kentucky Derby, began attending in 2007 when his wife, Heather, chaired the elegant fundraiser. Hats isn’t the only fashionable affair for the Dockweilers, who have co-chaired the Community School of Naples’ Angel Ball. They regularly attend the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, and he serves on the board of the Naples Zoo. Dockweiler, a sales associate at Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, appreciates the flexibility of real estate because it allows him to focus on his daughter, Celie Rose, 8, and son, Maxwell, 10. Being present for his children and developing enduring bonds, just as his own mother did, has been his plan all along. “If anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, it was to be a dad,” he recalls. “Time with family to me is the most important thing.” Although he’s gained a reputation as a stylish man, he admits that fashion hasn’t always been on his radar. “I was so involved in sports, I didn’t pay too much attention.” It was while pursuing a degree in sports management at Kennesaw State University that he worked part-time at the Gap and became more aware of what he wore. “You get great discounts, and that’s when I started building a closet,” says Dockweiler, who now prefers designers such as Brunello Cucinelli and John Varvatos. While Dockweiler thrived on sports, he knows they’re not for everyone and stresses the importance of kids finding a place where they belong. For Celie Rose, that place has been the Naples Performing Arts Center, where she’s taken the stage in 10 performances. From his parental perch, Dockweiler has begun helping the nonprofit, which started with a few dozen students and now has more than 700, including those with special needs, enrolled in dance, drama, and music classes. “There is a lack of performing arts in schools today,” he says. The center “encourages their love for the arts, builds their confidence, and helps them grow.” 76

RON CIESLA
The Consummate Gentleman When he’s not dressed for the fairways, Ron Ciesla is ready for the boardroom. No matter where he’s headed, Ciesla is a firm believer that looking good is a gentlemanly sign of respect. “When you dress nicely, people treat you differently,” he says, adding that it even applies to travel, a tip he’s shared with his grown children. “Always wear a blazer and you’ll be treated differently by airline staff. I always try to look like a gentleman. I think it’s very important, and we’re losing that. The whole thought of civility and being a gentleman is getting lost. There’s a sloppiness that has crept in. You can be casual and not be sloppy.” Ciesla adopted this appreciation for formality at a young age. Growing up in Bernardsville, New Jersey, he explains that his family was relatively poor, but he took note of how one of his uncles made an effort “to always have a style about himself,” he recalls. “It was something I admired about him. At family gatherings, he might have a nice fedora or a blazer and a tie, little things that set him apart from everyone else.” A childhood in New Jersey gave way to a career in New York City. In 2001, he was recruited for a position at Northern Trust’s Naples office, where he’s senior vice president and managing director. The timing felt right to relocate his family to the small coastal town he first visited in the late 1980s. “After 9/11, New York changed for me,” he says. Ciesla didn’t link up with golf until he married his wife of 32 years, Karin, and they started playing together and meeting new friends. Both of their children gravitated toward the sport, even participating on school teams. “Golf is my passion,” says Ciesla, who serves on the LPGA Foundation board and has a desire to bolster women’s professional and social networking opportunities through the game. “It’s very useful for the work that I do. I saw the benefit it brought my son as he pursued it. I saw doors open. I saw it to a different extent for my daughter. There’s a civility to it that’s not present in other professional sports.” 78

DOMINIC LACQUANITI The Couture Craftsman
“Jackets are not negotiable,” pronounces Dominic Lacquaniti, a man of bespoke style whose passion for fabric is in his blood. “Guys have to dress up. It changes your outlook on life. I’m changing Naples one sport coat at a time.” The force behind the custom clothing atelier D. Lacquaniti Bespoke grew up napping atop fabric piles at his father’s New Jersey tailoring business. He studied briefly at the Fashion Institute of Technology before learning alongside textile designers in New York City for 17 years. In 2012, he joined his father, Rocco Lacquaniti, who’d relocated Rocco’s Tailor Shop to Naples in the late 1990s. Since taking over operations six years ago, Lacquaniti has envisioned a “Naples look” and promoted the lady’s tuxedo. Three local tailors create D. Lacquaniti Bespoke’s handmade men’s and women’s clothing, along with New York–based “old-school Italian tailors I’ve known forever” he says. When it comes to inspirational fashion designers, Lacquaniti first looks to fellow Italian Gianni Versace. “He’s from the same part of Italy as my family,” he explains. “He had to fight really big people to become successful. He was the underdog.” Demand for Lacquaniti’s bespoke creations is so high that his concierge alteration services come second—and only by appointment. These days, “I’m getting pulled to Miami” for high-styling clients including celebrities and athletes, says Lacquaniti, who’s considering other ways to expand. “It’s not work; it’s my passion. I love seeing change in people. It’s my medicine. I love that my clients give me the opportunity to create beautiful things for them.” For his own clothing choices, Lacquaniti—who possesses a quick wit and disposition as sunny as Naples—confesses that he often dresses based on his mood. “If I’m feeling down and want fun, I will wear a brighter color. We can do that. It’s Florida.”

KEN KELLY The Jet-Setter
Naples native Ken Kelly keeps his suitcase stocked with Untuckit casualwear—a logical choice for the successful business leader and humanitarian who spent a third of the last calendar year traveling. As a wing commander for Angel Flight in Southwest Florida and a top-rated roofing expert, Kelly has gone on many hurricane-relief trips. He’s visited 60 countries and flown nonprofit missions for 16 years, racking up 1,000 piloting hours in his 2007 Cirrus SR22 after Hurricane Dorian ravished the Bahamas. He met his fiancée, Jennifer Jebrock, a clinical pharmacist at Jackson Memorial Hospital, after transporting a teenaged liver transplant patient from Naples to Miami. The president of Kelly Roofing, which was named Roofing Contractor of the Year in 2019 by an industry magazine, was hand-selected to consult on flashing and waterproofing for Tesla’s Solarglass Roof. He’s recently made several trips to Northern California, in fact, for research, development, and training for the new photovoltaic systems. After graduating from Barron Collier High School in 1993, Kelly took over operations of the business that his father, Joe Sr., established in 1972. He notes that Kelly Roofing is guided by the Japanese philosophy of kaizen—making a lifetime commitment to learning and improvement. “Being selected to work with Tesla really matches that core value,” he says. “It allows us to be cutting edge and continuously improve, not only internally but for the entire industry.” And while Kelly is constantly progressing in business, he does take a slightly more restrained approach to fashion. “I consider myself edgy conservative,” he says. “You think I’m conservative until you see my socks. I have some pretty funny, crazy socks. That’s where personality comes out.” Kelly has plenty of opportunities to share this fun side. He’s chairman of the Collier County Code Enforcement Board and served on the county’s Affordable Housing Advisory Committee for a decade. Years ago, he helped establish Hope Contained, a nonprofit that provides housing by refurbishing steel shipping containers. Kelly, who was a single dad to his son, Austin, gives back to the community simply because “I truly believe in the pay-it-forward mentality,” he says. When he needed it most, “there were a lot of people who went out of their way to help me.” 82

RALPH STAYER
The Haute Husband Ralph Stayer is a philanthropic leader in Naples, where he and his wife, Shelly, have had a tremendous impact since moving to Gordon Drive just a decade ago. Next month, he’ll be at her side during the grand opening of the Shelly Stayer Shelter for Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence. Built by the Shelter for Abused Women & Children in Immokalee, the facility is the first of its kind in the nation. “This is Shelly’s thing, and I totally support her,” says Stayer, adding that they focus 95 percent of their philanthropic efforts on women and children. “We’re happy to do anything we can to help, especially to make people aware of human trafficking.” Stayer credits his wife, a fellow Wisconsin native, for helping to make him a man of style. “As long as she keeps dressing me, I’ll continue to be fashionble,” he says, laughing. “My wife always looks fabulous so I really don’t have a choice but to dress well. Otherwise, we’d be an odd-looking couple.” Stayer has been recognized nationally as a top CEO for transforming Johnsonville Sausage from a butcher shop his parents started in Johnsonville, Wisconsin, in 1945 to a global brand sold in nearly 50 countries. These days, he’s slowly stepping away from his duties and coaching the next generation to take over. “It’s always been my intention to create a family legacy,” he says, noting that all seven of his children are involved in the business. “God used me to build this business, and I’m excited to have my children as stewards.” He remains chairman of Johnsonville Holdings, with three subsidiaries and multiple investments. This year is proving to be a packed one for the Stayers. The couple will witness the weddings of two children before embarking on an exotic trip to Kazakhstan, Bhutan, Lebanon, and India. But whether he’s working or relaxing, the sausage king remains an avid reader who devours more than 150 books a year. He also co-authored the 1994 best-seller Flight of the Buffalo: Soaring to Excellence, Learning to Let Employees Lead. It was fueled by his popular 1990 Harvard Business Review article, “How I Learned to Let My Workers Lead,” which is still required reading for most business students. Says Stayer: “I think it’s a timeless message.” «

soaring two-story window of their lakefront living room, which they transformed into a dining room for tonight’s event. “The sculptures came from Paris, and homeland security wanted to know why we were shipping spears into the country,” Terry says, laughing. “They had to build wooden crates for them, and fortunately, they all arrived intact.” In addition to incorporating pieces that have personal meaning, successful hosts maintain a sense of fun, according to the couple. “We try to come up with something silly for Halloween every year,” Terry says. “One year, Brain Roland [a Naples chef who owns Crave Culinaire] and I did the seven deadly sins, and we had a great time doctoring the tables. People showed up as greed, envy, gluttony, and so forth, and it was a blast. I have some friends who don’t like to dress up so I try to be sensitive to that, but this is one occasion where you can express your sense of humor and creativity through your theme.” Tonight’s ocean-oriented soiree be

Chefs Gerry Klaskala and Kevin Rathbun, of Atlanta restaurants Aria and Kevin Rathbun Steak, served Louisiana jumbo lump crab and olive-oil poached halibut paired with selections from Emily and Paul Michael of Peter Michael Winery in Calistoga, California. “I’m not sure if my dress looked ‘under the sea,’ but I felt like yellow went with the colors we were using, and my boots had stars on them, which made me think of starfish,” Terry says. “We naturally try to blend into the theme, and for us, part of the fun of being a host is expressing the theme in every way, some that your guests might not expect.” 94
Terry, who serves on the boards of the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens and the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, was once a professional floral arranger for events. “I was lucky to have clients like Artis—Naples, where I’d have to deliver 15 centerpieces, and I’d be wearing jeans, and in between that event and another, I’d change into something formal. These days, I much prefer entertaining on a smaller scale at home.” Bob, meanwhile, is a board member of Artis—Naples, The Baker Museum, and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, a modern art museum in Venice, Italy. In addition to the nautical-themed artwork on display for their tenth vintner dinner, which they co-hosted with fellow Naples Children & Education Foundation trustees Linda and Tom Koehn, the Edwardses’ contemporary home is filled with framed paintings. But perhaps most revealing about their attention to detail are the empty silver frames in a bedroom upstairs. Pictures taken when guests arrived will be processed during dinner and inserted into the frames, which will then be tucked into bow-topped gift bags. White cotton gloves await the couple’s assistant so that the photos can be inserted fingerprint free. «

TASTE By Mark Spivak
When Sicily was hit by famine and drought, the devout population prayed to St. Joseph for rain. They were rewarded with torrential downpours that revived their crops, and their ancestors now honor the benevolent saint with a feast every March 19— which is also when Italians celebrate Father’s Day. On that date and for one week afterward, Osteria Tulia features pasta con le sarde. Along with anchovies and sardines, the Naples restaurant’s version includes homemade bucatini with onions, garlic, saffron, wild fennel, currants, pine nuts, tomatoes, pecorino cheese, and breadcrumbs. The dish serves as a reflection of Sicily’s rich bounty, an echo of its Arabic heritage, and a respectful nod to the meatless tradition of Lent. (osteriatulia.com)

Kendra Rizzi serves as corporate beverage manager for Culinary Concepts—a collection of five area restaurants including Pazzo!, Yabba, The Saloon, and Chops in Naples and Bonita Springs—and counts herself lucky to work for a company that allows her to be creative and share her passion with customers. “Whatever you do, you should have a passion for it,” she says. “Mine is for creating a memorable guest experience.” Here, she shares some insight into the life of a mixologist. (gr8food.net)
SAMANTHA BLOOM
NI: How long have you been tending bar? Rizzi: Since I was 21. I lived in Hawaii, moved to Naples 17 years ago, and have worked on Fifth Avenue South ever since. I’ve watched it go from a sleepy, undeveloped street to the thriving hub of Naples.
What do you enjoy most about the job? I’m in love with the connection I have with the guests. I enjoy every aspect of getting to know customers, making them feel comfortable and part of the family. It’s pretty amazing when they go out of their way to see you. Let’s face it, they’d be drinking somewhere that night, but they chose your bar. Did you have any mentors or inspirational figures? My mother was in the hotel business, and she taught me to always go all out, do your best, [and] if you believe in something, never stop short. Describe your process for creating a cocktail. I begin by separating all the liquor on the bar: gin, vodka, whiskey, rum, amaro. Everything gets tasted, and you start asking questions. Can it stand alone, or do I want to mix it? Is it something I can build a cocktail around? When we come up with the cocktail recipes, the executive chef comes out and tastes them, and we decide which ones to put on the list. I do the same

thing when they develop dishes for the menu. We utilize each other’s talents because it’s a very similar process figuring out how and why things go together. How do you deal with customers who don’t know what they want? It’s a process of getting to know the person and their preferences. I’ll go through the cocktail section and highlight the popular items. We have such a wide range of cocktails that we can find something for everyone. My job is to open your mind to different tastes and combinations. Here’s what everyone wants to know: How much should you tip the bartender? I think you should evaluate the experience from start to finish. How much do you appreciate what the bartender has done for you? If you do, the normal range would be between 20 and 25 percent.

the menu with Fabrizio. Highlights include a range of charcuterie and bruschetta, a selection of pastas and sauces that allows the diner to customize his or her own dish, and Roman-style pan pizza made using 24-hour cold-aged dough, which Goddard contends is “lighter, crispier, and easier for digestion.” The Aiellis kept most of the original Naples cottage design but livened the interior with colorful touches such as Murano glass balloons. Above all, their goals are similar to what they hoped they’ve accomplished at their other restaurants. “Our aim is for Grappino to become another pillar in the Naples community,” says Ingrid, “where everyone is welcomed with delicious meals and good local causes are supported.” (grappinonaples.com)
VICKI BAKER
You can never have too much of a good thing, at least as far as Fabrizio and Ingrid Aielli are concerned. The couple first came to the Paradise Coast when chef Fabrizio cooked for the Naples Winter Wine Festival, and the seaside ambience and availability of fresh seafood immediately transported him back to his native Venice. After relocating here from Washington, D.C., the Aiellis opened Sea Salt in 2008, followed by Barbatella, a rustic trattoria, and an Italian steak house concept called Dorona. In December the Aielli Group opened its fourth Naples restaurant, Grappino, in the space formerly occupied by Timeless on Tamiami Trail North. The name pays homage to grappa, the Italian pomace brandy that has become a sensation in current mixology. The restaurant features one of the country’s largest grappa bars, with a selection of more than 100 bottlings. “Grappino combines the long tradition of grappa and Italian cuisine with simple Italian comfort food,” says corporate chef Jason Goddard, who developed

JIM SHARP
For more than three decades, Alice Sweetwater’s Bar & Grille has succeeded with a simple but unbeatable formula: serve high-quality food at an affordable price. “Consistency is a huge thing for us,” says manager Mary Beth Atwell. “You’re not going to come in here and get a cold basket of french fries. I stand in the kitchen window and watch every dish that goes out.” Customers appreciate the friendly atmosphere as well as the USDA Prime beef and fresh grouper that arrives daily (the restaurant serves 100 pounds per day during season). Alice Sweetwater’s prides itself on being the antidote to cookie-cutter chain restaurants, and its philosophy has resonated with locals, snowbirds, and crowds from the nearby courthouse. Being a casual restaurant doesn’t mean that diners can’t get a good bottle of wine or a well-made craft cocktail. The open-air deck is the ideal location to enjoy one of the menu’s newly added libations, such as the Seasonal Brazilian (cachaça, bitters, and fruit) or the Rye d’Mure (rye whiskey, crème de mure blackberry liqueur, and lemon juice). Alice Sweetwater’s prioritizes giving back to the community and contributes to a range of charities such as the Pace Center for Girls. Its team has also established the Greg Haley Foundation—named for the restaurant’s late owner who passed away from leukemia in 2018—to help area residents who have been diagnosed with the disease and lack the resources to pay their rent or get to the doctor. “Wherever we can help, we do,” says Atwell. SONOMA AWAKENING
Jordan Vineyard & Winery says au revoir to American oak and bonjour to a new winemaker By Mark Spivak
W Silky wines from SaintJulien and Pauillac in Bordeaux inspire Jordan Vineyard & Winery’s wellbalanced Cabernets, while Meursault and PulignyMontrachet in Burgundy influence its elegant Chardonnays.
hen Tom Jordan arrived in Sonoma in 1972, the region was a backwater. Napa didn’t register on anyone’s radar at the time (the Paris Wine Tasting was still four years away), and its western neighbor was one of the last places connoisseurs looked for fine wine. Jordan, however, saw things differently. He made his money in the oil industry and understood geology. Plus, he had friends in Sonoma. When he discovered prune orchards on the property that was to become Jordan Vineyard & Winery, he knew it had potential. Jordan envisioned recreating the great wines of Bordeaux in the New World, and he started by building a château worthy of the Médoc. He hired André Tchelistcheff, “the dean of American winemaking,” to mentor rookie winemaker Rob Davis. When the inaugural 1976 vintage appeared in 1980, it was indeed compared to the crus of Bordeaux: The Cabernet Sauvignon–dominated blend boasted ripe fruit, soft tannins, and impeccable balance. Unlike its French counterpart, it was aged in 40-percent American oak, and the powerful aromas and flavors of those barrels helped compensate for the shortcomings of the young vines. Much like fashion trends, wine styles come and go. Napa Cabernets—which are supremely ripe, heavily oaked, high in alcohol, and low in acidity—have been the darlings of the past few decades. Now, however, the pendulum shows signs of swinging back, and Jordan is more relevant than

What about the Chardonnay? The 2017 vintage ($31) is composed of Russian River fruit, harvested and pressed at night to preserve freshness and acidity. It presents a clean nose with hints of green apple and ripe pear. In the mouth, it exhibits classic flavors of citrus and melon, accented by notes of spice and hints of vanilla. While taut enough to drink with oysters, it would nicely complement fish dishes with generous sauces. If you’re tired of buttery, overblown California Chardonnay, this one’s for you. «

AN ABSORBING MATTER
That quandary of where to place her towel during high-sweat Peloton sessions sent Natalie Zellers online in search of one that would stay around her neck. Frustrated when she couldn’t find what she wanted, the longtime Naples resident decided to create her own. The Gym Bib is a lightweight, quick-drying towel that you can wear around your neck during workouts, thereby eliminating the need to drape the cloth on potentially germy gym equipment. It’s also a handy option for gardening, golfing, and other outdoor pursuits. “I'm working on an ‘after-hours’ version that will have reflective strips for runners or walkers who are out in the dark,” says Zellers, a novice inventor who co-owns a graphic design studio. “I also have a sample made for a small carrying pouch to keep The Gym Bib clean when carried in a purse or car.” (thegymbib.com)

SURVEY SAYS
THE SKINNY ON COLLIER The weight-loss resource website Dietspotlight has completed a twoyear survey on obesity and weight loss in Collier County. The report identifies rates and trends in BMI (body mass index), activity level, and diet programs over time. It also aims to show how these factors correlate to gender, age, and even specific neighborhoods. Collier’s data can be compared with that of other counties, states, and the nation as a whole. All responses were anonymous and collected through a voluntary form on the website. Jessica Touzet, the site’s director of marketing and operations, notes that the questions were not tailored to an overweight audience. “The data collected for Collier County came from residents who reached Dietspotlight while searching for resources and tools, like fat burners, weight-loss programs, and meal replacements to help with weight loss,” she says.
The survey found that the average man in Collier weighs 190 pounds and has a BMI of 27.6, while women weigh around 170 pounds with a BMI of 28.7. The National Institutes of Health defines BMIs between 25 and 29.9 as overweight. This means that, on average, Collier residents need to lose roughly 35 pounds to no longer be considered overweight. As the Dietspotlight survey concludes, this is 37 percent lower than the state average of 55 pounds and 41 percent lower than the country average of 59 pounds. (dietspotlight.com)

Most dentists don’t understand the importance of a healthy oral system.
WE DO!
IN SEASON
And we strive to educate each and every patient on the facts. Did you know that at least 80% of American adults have gum inflammation/disease? Gum disease is linked with blood vessel disease, heart attacks and strokes. Gum disease and tooth loss also increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Likewise, if an individual has diabetes and bleeding gums, the risk of a premature death increases by 400 to 700 percent. Essentially, your mouth talks to your body and your body talks to your mouth. To assess each patient’s oral health, we have an Oral DNA test available. This provides us with concrete evidence of the high-risk bacteria living in the mouth. When these tests come back with high levels of high-risk bacteria, we have an array of methods we can use to fight these bacteria and make sure that they will never come back. Here at the office of Dr Mantikas, we strive for optimal dental fitness. What’s a healthy outside without a healthy inside? The answer is simple. It’s nothing. So, YOU work on the outside and WE WILL work on the inside.

Get an EARFUL
Sweet corn is approaching peak season in Florida. “March is when we are getting into the swing of the spring season,” says Tori Rumenik, a representative of the Sunshine Sweet Corn Farmers of Florida. “It really kicks up in April and May for our growers.” Often considered a vegetable, corn is actually a grain. Because it’s starchy with a high-carb content, people may not understand the healthy goodness packed in those kernels. Corn’s high fiber content aids digestion and its complex carbohydrates provide long-lasting energy. It contains valuable B vitamins, folic acid, and iron, which helps prevent anemia, and provides
essential minerals such as zinc, magnesium, copper, and manganese. Corn is also a good source of antioxidants such as carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which promote eye health. The key to getting the best flavor out of an ear is to eat the corn as soon as possible after picking. You can find a wide variety of recipes, including the one below, through the Sunshine Sweet Corn Farmers of Florida website. (sunshinesweetcorn.com/ recipes)
Sweet Corn, Tomato, and Avocado Salsa 4 ears sweet corn, roasted, kernels removed from the cob 2 large tomatoes, diced 1 large avocado, peeled, seeded, and diced B/c cup red onion, finely chopped B/c cup bell pepper, finely chopped B/e cup cilantro, hand torn 1 lime, juiced (add more if desired) 1 tsp. cumin
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and stir. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, and hot sauce.

SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS Since its founding in 2014, Home Base Southwest Florida has helped more than 270 Southwest Florida veterans regain mental and physical health through personalized fitness and nutrition programs paired with a peer-support network. Monique Hashimoto, a U.S. Air Force veteran and project coordinator for the organization, participated in the programs herself in 2015. “Being a veteran with no connections, I realized I missed those relationships,” she says. “It was great to be part of the ‘family’ again.” The local organization, an extension of Boston’s Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program, recently expanded the health, education, and wellness services offered through its Warrior Health & Fitness program to military spouses living locally. U.S. Marine Corps veteran Armando Hernandez, Home Base Southwest Florida’s program director, notes that extending alternative medicine, peer outreach, and clinical services to military families helps strengthen the support group for the veteran and his or her entire family unit. Home Base always has aimed to include relatives because they, too, are impacted by the cycle of deployment. Just last fall, the organization launched a new clinical partnership with Lee Health to offer outpatient mental health services for veterans and adult military family members. All offerings are provided at no cost through philanthropic support and collaborations with Florida Gulf Coast University, Lee Health, and the YMCA. (homebase.org/florida)

DEAL OR NO DEAL?
Unpacking the benefits and risks of investing in qualified opportunity zones By Judy Martel A little-known provision in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that rewards those who put money into economically distressed urban areas in exchange for a tax break is causing some controversy. Investors who want to avoid unwant-
ed capital gains taxes on the sale of property or investments can instead reinvest the profits into local projects in government-designated qualified opportunity zones that will allow them to defer or, in some cases, eliminate payment of the capital gains tax. In one sense, the incentive is nothing new in the tax world, according to Neil H. Buchanan, an economist and tax professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. “It’s a specific version of the most generic thing out there, which is to give people a tax break to do something good,” he says. “For years, economists have been studying these types of tax incentives, and it seems that all too frequently the money could have been better spent in ways that would have created more economic development or jobs.”
The overriding question for economists is whether the taxpayer would have invested in the economically distressed opportunity zone without the tax incentive. Economists use the term “decision-making on the margin” to describe the type of investor who might be enticed by some sort of benefit in exchange for risk—whether that be a tax incentive or some other method to create a higher return. For example, any investor could put money in a bank account that pays a low interest rate, with no chance to earn more but also no possibility of loss. Sweetening the pot with something like a tax incentive might move the investor “off the margin.” The difficulty for economists lies in determining who that investor is, versus those who would have put their money into the riskier investment anyway but are happy to take

BALANCE the benefit regardless, notes Buchanan. “In that case, the question is why give billionaires a tax break they don’t need and which will not cause them to do anything beyond what they were already going to do?” The biggest controversy in the news around the opportunity zones, however, isn’t about whether the tax incentives create enough jobs or lift the areas economically, but rather about the area itself. There are accusations that opportunity zones are expanding outside of impoverished areas to include “poverty-adjacent or poverty-adjacent-adjacent” regions, says Buchanan. With the widening perimeters, money isn’t necessarily deployed where it’s most needed, while the risk for investors is reduced in the less poverty-stricken areas, he adds. Accountability on the back end is lackluster in many of the cases where luxury apartment buildings and office towers are going up in opportunity zones that critics charge are not economically distressed and therefore not in need
of tax subsidies for development. Nevertheless, unless the law is tightened and clarified, rich investors who meet the qualifications and time requirements can eliminate or defer taxes on capital gains even when they cash out of the opportunity zone investment, says Buchanan. They can put the profits from the sale of a business, for example, back into a different opportunity zone and “the whole thing gets rolled forward into a tax-advantaged deal,” he adds. It might sound like the investor gets all the perks with opportunity zones, but Buchanan cautions that there are downsides similar to those involved with any risky investment. The law on opportunity zones is “a big, complicated set of provisions” requiring expert advice, he says. “Identify potential landmines—that’s what a
good tax advisor will tell you. There are all kinds of ways investments can be risky, and the idea behind opportunity zones is to say that investing in impoverished areas is a high-risk investment, so in return, here’s a benefit that might make the difference between deciding to invest or not. But it’s good financial practice with any investment to figure out if it fits with your risk tolerance.” «

WOMEN’S March This is a milestone year for women’s empowerment, with 2020 marking the 100th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote. March is Women’s History Month, and cultural organizations throughout Southwest Florida are honoring women’s achievements in many unique ways. At the Center for Visual Arts Bonita Springs, a solo exhibition by Sanibel Island artist Myra Roberts provides social commentary on women’s rights, power, and influence. Her “Spokeswoman” series includes 40 original portraits of remarkable women. For this exhibit, on display March 6-26, Roberts curated a selection from this series featuring Audrey Hepburn, Anne Frank, Frida Kahlo, and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, along with other recent works. BABY LOVE When songstress Diana Ross belts the classic “Where Did Our Love Go,” five generations of audiences have answered with ovations. If you have a yearning, burning feeling to surrender to her sultry talent, then head to the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers March 6 for an evening of Motown hits. Ross thrilled the hearts of R&B fans in the early 1960s as the leader of The Supremes, and her star power only grew as she struck out on her own. In addition to receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, Ross has also been recognized with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of her influence on popular music as well as the cultural landscape in film, television, and theater. SENSE OF PLACE
Bruce Barone Jr.
appreciates the easy professionalism that permeates the Paradise Coast. The Connecticut native moved to Naples in 2001 and is now the executive director of the Fifth Avenue South Business Improvement District. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Florida Gulf Coast University, he earned his master’s in architecture from the University of Miami and completed a course in urban retail policy through Harvard. When not working to develop the businesses along Fifth Avenue South or serving on the board of the Naples Police Department’s Do the Right Thing program, Barone spends time with his wife, Lauren, and their sons, Bruce III and Henry James. —Caroline Ridgway 1. Dream car: Either a Land Rover Defender 110 or the upcoming Tesla Cybertruck or Lamborghini Urus. 2. Signature accessory: My Ray-Bans. I wear aviators and wayfarers interchangeably. I also have a Louis Vuitton wallet my wife got me for an anniversary gift, and it’s one of my favorite pieces. 3. Next purchase: I collect three-piece suits and have been hinting to my wife that I’d like a new Ralph Lauren tailored suit. 4. Guilty pleasure foods: I’m Italian so pasta and pizza are staples. I also have a sweet tooth. There is an éclair at The French on Fifth Avenue that should be illegal. 5. Favorite place to shop locally: Wynn’s Market 6. Wardrobe essentials: I’m a clotheshorse. My uniform-ofsorts has become a navy blazer, dark jeans with a sharp, crisp white or gingham shirt, and a pocket square dictated by the day. I finish it off with my Apple Watch, Warby Parker tortoise spectacles, and Monk Strap dress shoes. 7. Movies he’s seen more than five times: The Godfather, Tommy Boy, Goodfellas, The Dark Knight, The Matrix, and Fight Club, to name a few. 8. Product he can’t live without: Yves Saint Laurent cologne 9. Collects: I obsessively collect comic books, architectural drawings, and guitars. 10. Cause he’s passionate about: Special needs children. There are organizations here doing tremendous work, including United Way, the Knights of Columbus, and the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.
