Vera Jaye (right) with Angela Bruckner at the Bruckner home
Me with my kids Remy, Thomas, and Piper at a Christmas past
AUDREY SNOW
There I was, brand-new to Naples and my job as editor in chief of Naples Illustrated, attending my first in-person event representing the magazine. It was a blazing hot summer day, and I was glad to be inside the AC at Kunjani Craft Coffee while getting a much-needed caffeine jolt. The event was hosted by Vera Jaye of Jaye Design, and in an effort to help us mix and mingle, in a socially distanced way, Vera had us make our own name tags. I went the extra mile and wrote my name plus “New Editor of Naples Illustrated,” hoping to spark some conversations. One of the first gals who came up to me was wearing “Teresa Mayor” on hers, which I assumed was her first and last name, so I politely asked her what she did. She responded, “I am Teresa, and I am the mayor of Naples.” Even though I felt awkward for not knowing who she was, the mayor gracefully skimmed over my faux pas and we glided into a fun conversation about our kids, each of us having three. Next, I turned my attention to Vera, and she introduced me to her client, Angela Bruckner, who ended up becoming our cover girl for this issue. That afternoon, it was obvious that not only did Angela and Vera have an easy, friendly chemistry, but they were thrilled with how well their partnership had panned out. Angela was amazed with Vera’s thoughtful designs in her home, particularly when it came to the way she transitioned her two sons’ surroundings, helping them to develop into young, independent men of character. I had to see this home for myself, and as soon as I did, I knew we had to shoot the Bruckners at home for our Holiday Issue. I hope you are as enchanted with it as I am. If you care to travel farther away than Naples via our pages, check out a trip to Door County, Wisconsin, on page 96 or read about Naples artist Carmelo Blandino’s journeys home to Italy, and the charming town of Lucca in particular, on page 64. Or learn how chef Andy Hyde of Hyde N Chic celebrated in Germany and Ghana on page 29. We may be bopping down to the Keys with the kids this year during Christmas break to hang out with my husband’s sister and her family. There, it’s all about boat time, fishing, manatee watching, floating in the pool, and relaxing on the porch as the sun sets. It’s a far cry from the way we used to spend our holidays in New England years ago, but change can be good. For instance, when my son, Thomas, was 2 and a half, he knocked over our freshly cut Christmas tree on two separate mornings while I was upstairs getting ready for work. His twin sister, Remy, quickly appeared in my bathroom with her mouth and eyes wide open, and that’s how I knew I had a mess waiting for me downstairs. Now, at almost 6 feet, Thomas is plenty tall enough to pick candy canes off our tree without having to climb, branch by branch, to retrieve them. I couldn’t be too mad at him, however. Tree-knocking was a genetic trait he inherited from me. I took one down when I was 10, during a dance contest at my friend Debbie’s house. We were blasting the Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas record, and I wanted to pull out a unique move that would catapult me into a victory granted by our discerning judge, Beth, Debbie’s little sister. I closed my eyes, started shaking my booty, and proceeded to dance backwards…right into their tree. Here’s hoping you find joy this holiday season, no matter how or what you celebrate.

INSIDER
Chef Andy Hyde is the product of cultures as diverse as Ghana, Germany, and Chicago. Before coming to Naples in 2014, he worked for culinary celebrities such as Gordon Ramsay, Thomas Keller, and Grant Achatz. “I spent many years shuttling back and forth between my mom in Chicago and my foster family in Germany, and I always wanted to move here permanently,” he says. “It comes down to opportunity: If you want something badly enough in America and work for it, it will happen—provided you’re not afraid to fail.” The chef was drawn to Naples for numerous reasons. “Naples reminds me of Ghana in many ways,” he explains. “It’s tropical, with a beautiful coastal breeze that I never got in Germany.” During the holiday season, Hyde reflects on how where he is from and where he has lived has influenced his celebratory cuisine. “In Ghana, holiday dishes range from spicy to rich and fatty. There’s lots of fried fish and goat, and
029_INSIDER_1220.indd 29
cornmeal stewed with palm oil. Germany has fish such as loup de mer (branzino), but you also have game such as goose and rabbit. I’d like to do African dishes such as spinach stew or German versions such as red cabbage stew, and I’m working on a fusion dish of a fried plantain dessert stuffed with goose liver.” His 30-seat, chef-driven restaurant, Hyde N Chic, opened last November. CAN’T HYDE THIS TALENT CONT. NI: Can you explain your concept of “New Immigrant Cuisine?” Hyde: It’s all about the trend of how America absorbs its immigrants into the culture. Fifty years ago, they were mostly European, so the restaurants tended to be French and Italian. Now you’re seeing people like me from different backgrounds, and the cuisine reflects places like Africa, South America, and Asia. I had the chance to grow up in many different worlds, and I’ve always had to migrate to different cultures and adapt to them.
From left: Wild mushroom strudel; Ghanian chocolate and raspberry dessert; chef Hyde holding an Imperial Chateau Margaux.
What challenges do you face as a Black chef in America? The real challenge was in the mindset of being an entrepreneur. If you believe people will be against you because of your skin color, that’s probably what you’ll get. But if you’re aware of who you are and are true to yourself, it all works out. If someone wanders into my restaurant with no prior knowledge of the place, they wouldn’t necessarily know it was run by a Black chef. My job is to make people happy. When you see the gleam of joy in a customer’s eyes, it’s all worth it. If you hadn’t become a chef, what would you be? Either a pilot or a diplomat. Every single night
LOCAL AUTHOR
For Young Naturalists
Author Susan Sachs Levine explores local wildlife in her latest children’s book.
The idea that the outdoors are ready to explore at any age is the premise behind a new kids’ book from Naples author Susan Sachs Levine. Jenny’s First Catch: An Adventure with Florida’s Wading Birds (Mascot Books, 2020) follows a spunky protagonist who learns to fish, while the author weaves in fun facts through the wildlife she encounters. As Jenny learns more from each new bird, including a snowy egret, white ibis, wood stork, and great blue heron, she also discovers how to persevere when the going gets tough. A window into the beautiful plumes and scenery in Naples, this book gives parents and grandparents the opportunity to get their little ones excited about the outdoors and birding. (susanlevinebooks.com) —Megan Graham
when I was a kid, I’d look into the sky for planes. As far as becoming a diplomat, I love different languages and cultures. Most of the schools I attended had a large number of international students. It has always been in my DNA to want to change society or do something for my community. Describe some of your community involvement. If you want to make an impact, you have to start with what’s around you. The restaurant sponsors a culinary program with Naples High School, and we have one student, Johnny McWilliams, who’s been working in the kitchen for a year. We close for vacation in August and September, and I sponsor young culinarians to go abroad and work. One of them, Bailey Cisek, spent three months in Germany working in everything from bakeries to Michelinstarred restaurants. What’s your definition of hospitality? Being willing to do for others. I said before that my job was making people happy, and there’s nothing more important than that. If you can create that moment of happiness, it’s magical. What lessons did you learn during the pandemic? There is never a right time to open a restaurant, but fortunately, we were able to get started before the virus hit. You always have to be willing to adapt and adjust, and you can never really get too comfortable. Above all, work with what you have got and be smart about it—complaining does not get you anywhere.

INSIDER ATTRACTION UPDATE
A Bonita Springs Favorite EVOLVES In addition to a new website, Everglades Wonder Gardens has many updates and upgrades to roll out. In September, the nonprofit wildlife attraction welcomed David Webb as its new executive director. Webb, who boasts a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Florida Gulf Coast University and nearly 20 years of leadership experience, will be in charge of operations, philanthropy, and management. As Webb steps into his role, he’s launching projects such as remodeling a section of the park and creating new exhibits for bald eagles, parrots, and crocodiles. He hopes to keep Everglades Wonder Gardens true to its original feel and put an emphasis on conservation. “Everglades Wonder Gardens offers a really unique opportunity for a fun, engaging experience that is also safe, outdoors, and provides plenty of social distancing,” he says. If you’re not up for an in-person trip, the website has virtual tours and a “Flam Cam” that shares the leggy pink birds’ chow time. (evergladeswonder gardens.com) —Megan Graham

rom Marco Island to Bonita Springs, seasonal lights shine through palm and oak branches, and throughout shopping courtyards and gated communities. They are uplifting sights to behold on the heels of a rollercoaster year—precisely the goal for Bill Kilgus, who started his family-run Trimmers Holiday Decor company 30 years ago. “People who look forward to holiday lighting are going to appreciate it so much this year,” says Kilgus. “The lights will make a much larger impact and be a big lift after what we’ve been through.” The thousands who attend lighting ceremonies along Third Street South and Fifth Avenue South, and residents who see Kilgus’ handiwork at The Village Shops on Venetian Bay, Pelican Bay, Olde Cypress Country Club, or Quail Creek Country Club, may not realize that the designer has been the
region’s trendsetter. His “creativity never stops, and our team of installers always set the bar high,” says his wife and business partner, Marji Kilgus. Trimmers is generally acknowledged for introducing twinkle palm lighting to the region, and their approach has evolved. Kilgus now places custom factory orders to execute his visions. On his palms, “every third light bulb turns on and off slowly and softly” to create a fading effect, he explains. The norm has been “every fifth bulb, but it’s not effective. For some applications it’s okay but not on palm branches, so we made spacing a lot closer together.” He also uses a costly, more durable, heaviergauge wire than the industry standard, because he finds “the light is a tad bit brighter.” The company transitioned from incandescent to LED three years ago and chose a multifunction “computer tree” for Fifth Avenue South that can be set to fade from top to bottom (and vice versa) and emit pre-set colors. Trimmers Holiday Decor is installing 150,000 sets of lights for 190 clients throughout Collier, Lee, and Charlotte counties, as well as in Sarasota and Tampa, through two franchises. Though the magic of the holidays is brief, it’s a joy that sparks throughout the year for Bill and Marji Kilgus. “It makes us feel good to know in some small way we can make a little bit of a difference,” he says. INSIDER COMMUNITY
Philanthropic Leaders UNITE
Showing strong solidarity, FOUR Collier County nonprofits join forces to get things done in the pandemic’s wake By Lynne Groth
Looking back on 2020, one thing is for sure: There remains much uncertainty thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout. The unknowns are exactly what Collier County’s “Philanthropic Four” have been planning for since March. This group of three local foundations and an umbrella nonprofit—the Community Foundation of Collier County (CFCC), Naples Children & Education Foundation (NCEF), Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, and United Way of Collier and the Keys—has been the community’s life raft since the onset of COVID-19. But this isn’t the first time they’ve banded together. Back when Hurricane Irma hit in September 2017, the CFCC established the first Collier Comes Together Fund. It’s also been activated following local wildfires in the Golden Gate area and to alleviate economic stress from the 2018 red-tide crisis. Today the Philanthropic Four continue girding for the next unknown. The leaders of these four organizations have held weekly teleconferences to assess local needs, coordinate resource distribution to avoid duplication, and identify gaps as they collectively disperse more than $24 million in pandemic relief to local families and nonprofits. They continually survey the combined grantees to Funds raised and distributed by the Philanthropic Four have helped organizations such as the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida stay afloat and support at-risk communities during the pandemic. The Collier Comes Together for Coronavirus Relief Fund has also set aside half a million dollars for future needs, such as vaccine distribution.
34
understand how their work has changed, as well as their current and projected needs, so that the funders can strategize priorities as they move forward. “The partnership between the four of us has been evolving over the years,” says CFCC President/CEO Eileen Connolly-Keesler, who is busier than ever. “In March, we started to meet by phone twice a week. The more contact we had, the more organized we could be.” The CFCC’s Collier Comes Together for Coronavirus Relief Fund collected $1.5 million in donations and distributed $1 million. The remainder is being held in reserve to address the next pandemic-related issue, whether it be education, childcare, hunger relief, or vaccine distribution. As Connolly-Keesler observes, “We knew this wasn’t going to be a sprint—it was going to be a marathon.” In the past, the three major foundations awarded grants to nonprofits to support specific programs. Organizations are responsible for raising funds through donations or revenue-generating activities for operating expenses, but this has changed. Many are now receiving grants to keep their doors open so they can serve their clients. “We know our local nonprofits that do vital work in our community are reeling from lost income from events and donations, so our new grant process will help keep them afloat,” Connolly-Keesler says.
BRIGHTER DAYS In March, NCEF, founders of the Naples Winter Wine Festival, issued $20 million in grants to 43 nonprofits focused on the health and education of at-risk children and their families. Recipients included the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida, the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County, St. Matthew’s House, Legal Aid Services of Collier County, and Friends of Foster Children Forever. The theme for the 2021 festival, which will be held virtually, is fittingly triumphant: “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” “The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us in ways we never

imagined and community need is greater than ever,” says NCEF CEO Maria Jimenez-Lara. “I am proud of how the Philanthropic Four have stepped up to make sure that underprivileged children and families in Collier County see brighter days.” The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation joined forces with the Philanthropic Four, as it understands the scope of the unprecedented crisis and easily collaborates with CFCC and NCEF. Best Buy founder Richard Schulze, who owns a home in Collier County, and the foundation’s board expedited $3 million in grants in Southwest Florida. To be more flexible, it provided operational support to its agencies and shifted from sole program funding. In addition, $5 million was allocated to assist furloughed and laid-off Best Buy employees nationwide. A $200,000 pledge was made to NCEF to develop an app to help Collier County residents access emergency services. The United Way is working with The Salvation Army of Collier County to administer up to $20 million in rental, mortgage, utility, and childcare assistance through Collier County’s share of federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act funding. It created an online process that enables those in need to complete applications electronically, rather than standing in line at the office. In turn, case managers can work remotely to safely and efficiently meet the needs of each household requiring assistance.
A FRONTLINE MARATHON Each year, the United Way of Collier and the Keys provides $1 million to partner-agency programs throughout the county, directly impacting more than 10,000 people. “When Hurricane Irma hit, it affected just our regional communities,” says Steven L. Sanderson, president/CEO of the United Way of Collier and the Keys. “COVID-19 is the equivalent of a hurricane hitting the entire world with unknown
034_INSIDERphilanthropy_1220.indd 35
lasting effects.” The United Way aids families teetering on the edge of poverty and homelessness and has partnered with CFCC to assist families after Irma, through COVID-19, and whatever is around the corner. Those unknown effects continue unraveling as jobs disappear and society juggles social distancing protocols until a vaccine is widely distributed. The pandemic’s economic aftershocks are rippling through the 42,700 households in Collier County living paycheck to paycheck and facing the possibility of eviction or bankruptcy in the event of an unexpected, costly emergency or income loss. These are the families being aided by the United Way and The Salvation Army of Collier County, which have partnered with the Florida Housing, Education, and Lending Programs to distribute Collier’s CARES Act funds. The Salvation Army has been a boots-on-the-ground conduit for distributing Collier Comes Together money to families in need for the past few years. “Receiving funding from the Collier Comes Together Fund allows us to focus on optimizing emergency service provisions to meet immediate needs so vulnerabilities do not become liabilities,” says Ashley Jones, director of social services/disaster recovery for the Salvation Army. “We see family after family struggling with urgent and critical needs.” What’s next for the Philanthropic Four? “Our organizations working together to address community needs will continue in the future,” Connolly-Keesler says. “Each partner has some specific areas they fund, some overlap. This is forever.” Upcoming for the CFCC is the seventh annual 24-hour online giving day, Give Where You Live Collier, on February 10, thanks to ongoing support from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. Connolly-Keesler notes, “This event, designed to boost 40 preselected basic needs and education nonprofits, will be a lifeline to these organizations in 2021.” « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2020

HIDDEN Beauty
This award-winning renovation captures the essence of sophisticated coastal living By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Rick Bethem/Bethem Photography Eclipsed by cherry-red living room walls, a hodgepodge of dated design styles, and a mixture of wood and tile flooring, the innate potential of this Naples home was difficult for most to see. But all it took was a hefty dose of imagination and a skilled team to transform the 3,500-square-foot, four-bedroom ugly duckling into a chic transitional residence. To make this vision a reality, Suzanne Garry, a realtor with John R. Woods Properties in Naples, worked with Howard Thompson, project supervisor at Naples-based PBS Contractors, and Laurie Walter, an interior designer and

CEO of Cardamon Design, also in Naples. Following a total demolition and remodel of the interior and exterior—all of which was designed by Walter—the Pelican Bay home won multiple Sand Dollar Awards from the Collier Building Industry Association in 2017. “This was kind of like having a baby, and it took about the same amount of time,” says Walter. “It was a joint project, and we won best overall design, best master bath suite, and best outdoor living space.” To begin, Walter decided to raise the ceilings, knock down walls, move and replace windows, and swap out the polyglot of flooring materials with a beige porcelain tile throughout. As a nod to the home’s soft coastal appeal, she selected a color palette composed of neutrals with accents of spa-blue, navy, and white. “Almost all of the furniture is custom,” Walter notes. “The fabrics and finishes were all selected to coordinate with the background selections. All of the artwork are hand-embellished giclees.” Angled walls with built-in shelves made the foyer and living room an especially challenging space. After painting the shelves white, Walter backed them with a shimmering yet subtle capiz shell tile and installed LED lighting to enhance the effect. “Architecturally, whenever there is 48 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

a potential negative, instead of just ripping things out, I make it a positive and give my clients three options to address it,” she explains. Other architectural details include boxed ceiling beams that run from the living room through to the outdoor living space. Floating shelves by the media center create dimension and display a selection of the homeowners’ favorite accessories. Mirrored inserts in the formal dining space render a modern mood. Following feng shui principles, only five of the six dining chairs circle the cerused wood table. The additional chair serves as a desk chair and is returned when needed. The warm and welcoming kitchen features a coffee bar, comfortable leather barstools, and a large quartz island. “More solid perimeter countertops make the island even more special,” the designer says. A tiled backsplash and a smattering of aquatic elements create just enough visual intrigue to keep the eye dancing. Tongue-and-groove beadboard on the family room ceiling increases the coastal feel the clients wanted. Sophisticated but comfy, the room boasts a cerused wood TV console, specialty bar hardware, and a leather-tufted cocktail ottoman next to a dune-colored, linen-like sectional. In the master bedroom, Walter filled in the two windows that were originally on the headboard wall and instead opened the solid walls with sliders to showcase the beautiful view. The muted gray and delicate sand color palette increases the spa-like ambience. To save space on the sleek nightstands, Walter installed chandeliers instead of using lamps. “The master bedroom is a testimony to the importance of working with clients,” she says. “The entire project always starts with space planning so that we know the appropriate sizes to use. We get everything approved from the very beginning.” Totally new from the floor up, the exquisite master bath includes a slightly floating tub and steam shower. Neatly hidden behind the frosted door is a large walk-in closet.

When it comes to guest rooms, Walter notes that they need to be easy to maintain and should include washable bedding. This home offers three such spaces, and each is a little different. In the twin-bed guest room, a large upholstered headboard makes it easy to transition the two beds into one large king bed. Shiplap in the second guest bedroom further echoes the home’s relaxed coastal essence, while the third room features a dark-blue accent wall complemented by fish-adorned pillows. This space, which was once an office, also includes a secretary desk dresser. Due to its configuration, the powder room/guest bath was another difficult room to design. To make it appear lighter and more open, the designer removed the almost wedge-shaped vanity, built the wall out to increase its length, and added a pedestal sink. Outside in the sumptuous exterior living area, Walter replaced the small, freeform pool with a larger, linear pool that is more in keeping with the home’s style. This ideal backyard retreat also includes an outdoor kitchen and dining and sitting areas. Residents and guests can sit at the custom counter off of the pass-through kitchen window and chat with those inside—exactly what Walter envisioned when she designed it. “My clients absolutely love the house,” she says. “It lives so well. It is casual but still feels really special.” «
From above: Sand and gray hues commingle in the master bedroom; the award-winning master bath is both functional and stylish.

SHELF Life
Styling shelves is all about balance and VISUAL INTRIGUE By Liza Grant Smith Those who have tried to create swoon-worthy shelves are well aware of the “devil is in the details” aspect of interior design. Here, Dawn Harmon of Little Palm Design Group shares her expert strategies for tripping the shelf fantastic. (littlepalmdesigngroup.com)
Tip: Go big and meaningful. “Large statement pieces have much more impact than little items bunched together,” says Harmon. Escew small knickknacks and random chotskies that can look lost and cluttered in favor of larger, more captivating items that have meaning. “It feels more personal and interesting if special artistic pieces can be incorporated. These can be pieces collected from trips or items of importance that make a space warm and representative of you.”
Tip: Strive for balance. “Proper balance is achieved with both the color and the scale of the accessories. Keeping a cohesive color direction unifies the shelves with the room, and like items are best placed together.”
Tip: Don’t be afraid to experiment.
THE LOCALE: SHELVES IN A LIVING ROOM, DEN, OR FOYER Tip: Start with a decorated space. While you may be excited to start stocking your shelves, hold off until the design elements of your room have come together. The combination of furniture pieces, fabrics, and wall color/treatments in a space is what gives it personality, and it is ultimately this personality that your shelf accessories should speak to. “Keeping in mind the direction of the design scheme in the room allows the accessories to add to the overall story,” says 52
Harmon. The items you select should be used as a means of highlighting and playing on a space’s already established theme—not to form a disconnected focal point.
“It may take a little trial and error to get it all looking how you like it. Just keep at it. I will often bring more pieces than I need so I can experiment until I get it right.”
Tip: Create a blank canvas.
Tip: Shelves should not be a dumping ground.
“To start fresh is ideal,” advises Harmon. Remove everything from the shelves before you begin adorning. This way you can build the look piece by piece, while still keeping in mind what each item contributes to the room as a whole.
“One frequent mistake people make is using leftover items from around the house and trying to make them work just to fill the space. If you are going to make an impact, the work needs to be done with intention and purpose.”

THE LOCALE: SHELVES IN A HOME OFFICE OR LIBRARY Tip: Establish visual intrigue with book displays and thoughtful accessories. “Changing up the direction of the books into groupings and adding appropriate accessories will offer a break from never-ending rows,” explains Harmon. “Showcasing unique books on a stand can also add attention to significant pieces.” In addition, she stresses the importance of art and photos. “Adding a piece of framed art can be extraordinary. If using photos, try keeping
the frames in the genre of the room and of nicer quality for a finished look.”
Tip: Let decor details help make your shelves pop. “Adding a contrast backing to shelving will add interest, which can further balance the
room. Numerous textured wallcoverings work great. Some ideas would be woven grass cloth, cork, or pebble stone. Contrasting paint or stains also create depth and set a backdrop to frame out special items on display. Or, on occasion, a mirror can be effective in adding light and dimension to artistic pieces.”

ermont is on the tip of everyone’s tongue these days. True, natural splendor and minimal development have always been assets of the Green Mountain State. But the pandemic has cast a newfound spotlight on Vermont as America’s next great vacation and second-home destination. In a state where wilderness claims more than 76 percent of the land, the air is pure, the scenery is stunning, and the outdoor pursuits are endless. Nowhere is this more palpable than at The Lodge at Spruce Peak, a resort community underscored by a rusticchic, alpine lodge with simple rooms and suites, as well as more extravagant mountain
cabins, private homes, and the in-progress One Spruce Peak, an exclusive collection of modernist townhomes and residences. Nestled between the base of skyscraping Spruce Peak and Vermont’s highest summit, Mount Mansfield, the lodge and its excess of 2,000 protected acres are guided by the seasons, assuming new looks and personalities each quarter to showcase the best of Vermont’s ever-changing outdoors. In winter, snow-white Stowe glistens as “Ski Capital of the East,” where The Lodge at Spruce Peak offers direct ski-in, ski-out access—catering to all levels, from bunny slopes to black-diamond runs—and plenty of après-ski fun in the heated swimming pool and duo of hot tubs. A massive ice-skating rink anchors a retail and dining village, dominating the social scene for tykes, tweens, and teens. Other activities abound, from ascending snow-blanketed trails on horseback to

cross-country skiing, dogsledding, ice climbing, and snowshoeing. In addition to the action-packed offerings, leisure is also most welcome. You may want to stay put and just take in the wintry sights from your cozy room or suite, most with stone-framed fireplaces and all with balconies or terraces framing mountain views. Or you might want to recharge in the worldclass, 18-treatment-room spa, especially after a morning on the slopes. Come spring and summer, lush greenery returns, and the lodge’s designated nature trails and mountainside, 18-hole, par-72 golf course come into focus. Stowe’s adventure course reopens (inclusive of hanging bridges and Spider-Man-style climbing nets) as does its adrenaline-inducing zip line course, which reaches speeds of up to 60 mph. Climbing, bouldering, canoeing, and kayaking become options for the daily agenda, as do mountain biking, cycling, hiking, and fishing. Fall excursions mirror those of summer yet the terrain explodes in the most dramatic colors—hedge your bets on the brightest of yellows, oranges, and reds come late September or early October. No matter the season, the vistas astound, and the lodge surfaces as a special destination for families creating lasting memories and unplugging from modern entrapments. When on property, your biggest worry becomes what fabulous dish to order at flag
057_ESCAPE_1220.indd 59
Vermont isn’t the easiest destination for a short getaway, so those wanting to experience the seasons on a quick trip should look no further than Boston, New England’s easiest access point from Southwest Florida. Just beyond the city limits (some 20 minutes) lies the history-rich, forested town of Lexington, a destination both distant and charming enough to foster escapism while keeping optional city jaunts within reach. Here, next to the Battle Green, site of the Revolutionary War’s first battle circa 1775, stands The Inn at Hastings Park, a darling Relais & Châteaux collection of 22 rooms over three thoughtfully restored historic buildings that thoroughly embrace Americana, inside and out. Though autumn is our favorite season in which to enjoy the inn in its full Technicolor splendor, there’s never a bad time for appreciating the historic, natural environs. This includes the 11-mile Minuteman Bikeway (maintained even in winter) and Walden Pond, the beauty of which served as muse for famed poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau.
Seasons do, however, dictate the menu at the inn’s noteworthy Town Meeting Bistro restaurant. A highlight is the savory and crispy Judith Point hot calamari—trust us, it rivals the best in secret-recipe, fried-chicken excellence. There’s also the Whispering Angel Culinary Garden, a lovely outdoor dining space bedazzled in rosé bottles, floral arrangements, and Baccarat crystal. Bonfires and space heaters keep the garden toasty, allowing guests to delight in signature four-course, wine-paired meals for lunch or dinner. Further upholding the robust food and wine reputation of the Relais & Châteaux brand, inn owner and culinary educator Trisha Pérez Kennealy hosts cooking classes structured around subjects such as crafting the ultimate potato side dishes or the secrets of roasting chicken. Whether hunkering down in the lodge on a snowy morning or sipping rosé in the garden and exploring America’s past and the great outdoors on a sun-kissed afternoon, The Inn at Hastings Park delivers New England enchantment year-round. SERENITY by the Sea Florida cool meets coastal elegance at THE SEAGATE Hotel & Spa By Abigail Duffy Even though it is nestled off bustling Atlantic Avenue, The Seagate Hotel & Spa in Delray Beach feels worlds away. The boutique property marries beachside sensibility with contemporary luxury, and it’s all just steps from one of the Palm Beaches’ most enchanting shores. The 7,000- and 2,500-gallon exotic fish and shark tanks personify The Seagate’s South Floridian magnetism as their marine inhabitants and ethereal indigo glow transfix guests who pass through the hotel’s common areas. The coastal influence carries across breezy Bahamian accents and creamy colors, an aesthetic sure to lull guests into the relaxed state of mind that a weekend at The Seagate elicits. The same Bahamian design elements are apparent in The Seagate’s plush, sanctuary-like rooms. The 500-square-foot deluxe king and

queen rooms come with a choice of a walk-in shower or a bubble-jet tub (or both if you can’t decide), plus Egyptian cotton sheets (imagine slipping into those after a long day at the beach). For guests celebrating momentous occasions—such as that first post-pandemic vacation—The Seagate offers welcome amenities, like Champagne and wine to toast to the deserved getaway. They are best enjoyed on a private balcony overlooking Atlantic Avenue, with glimpses of the ocean in the distance. If a hedonistic day of pampering is in order, the 8,000-square-foot Seagate Spa boasts a refreshing menu, including custom massages (the Rain Massage will melt away any hint of stress), potent rejuvenating facials, and invigorating body treatments. Lounging poolside under a canopy of palm trees is the perfect follow-up activity.
Guests who want to explore the neighborhood need only climb aboard The Seagate’s trolley that stands ready to whisk vacationers off to destinations within 3 miles, such as the Seagate Beach Club, Seagate Country Club, or anywhere along Atlantic Avenue. You can also opt to ride in one of The Seagate’s white Cadillac Escalades to and from the hotel. Epicurean travelers will meet their match at The Atlantic Grille, which specializes in seaside fare for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. Guests can dine alfresco or alongside the resto’s famous moon jellyfish floating inside a 450gallon aquarium, all while indulging in modern preparations of classic dishes and South Florida’s freshest seafood. For those looking to fuel rounds of golf and afternoon swims with a quick bite, the hotel’s Etc. Café stocks pastries, sandwiches, organic coffee, and more. From Italy WITH LOVE
Born in Sicily, Carmelo Blandino has always had an artist’s eye and an adventurer’s soul. He moved from Italy to Canada to earn his degree in illustration and design from Dawson College in Montreal. In 2005, at the urging of a Floridian friend, he packed his paintbrushes and headed south to check out Naples. Blandino was immediately smitten and made a full-time move to the Paradise Coast. He and his wife, Julie Love, a pilot for Spirit Airlines, are the doting parents to terriers Enzo, Fergus, and Nora, and turtle Leonardo. Although COVID-19 kept them from traveling to see his family in Sicily and her family in Scotland, the jet-setting couple visited Cashiers, North Carolina, instead. Next up is a long road trip in a camper to Colorado, Utah, California, Washington, and Montana. Or a trip that involves physical endurance—trekking in wild terrains with his motorcycle, by camel, or on horseback and sleeping outdoors. In the meantime, catch this traveling man’s work at Method & Concept in Naples and read below to see his favorite Italian influences and places. —Christina Cush
From top: Rome; Carmelo Blandino leads an art class in Lucca; Italian olive oil; Lucca, in Italy’s Tuscany region.
Where to go: Rome. It has the entire history of civilization embedded within its structures and culture, from the second Egyptian empire to the Etruscans, Greeks, and Romans. Rome is a dichotomy of old-world ideas mixed with progressive, open-minded people, crooked politicians, and intellectual, literary brilliance. The mix of all this history, experience, and creativity with the unmistakable, unique humor of the Romans themselves makes for a very interesting city.
Monticchiello, a nice medieval village near Pienza. The villagers take pride in telling you that there are only 98 inhabitants and they will give you a quick two-minute tour of their village and possibly invite you in for an espresso.
Filmmakers to study: Federico Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, and Giuseppe Tornatore
Where to shop: Piazza di Spagna in Rome used to be my favorite place to shop. And I know this is not in Italy, but the Brocante market in Paris is a must visit.
A worthwhile excursion: Lucca. I’ve been going there for the last three years and give my workshops there. This medieval city is a fortress contained within very high walls with eight entrances. You cannot drive your car in the city and must park at the entrance, forcing you to discover every nook. A cultural experience: My painting workshops are located at a Florentine villa named Casa Berti. A small group of us, only seven, get together for a week of creativity, painting, inspiration, great food, and sightseeing. Friendships are formed and the energy is very positive. Where to dine: Osteria La Porta in Monticchiello. All of the ingredients are local and fresh, served with a fresh attitude. The tavern is located in proximity to the entrance to
Goods to sample: Parmesan cheese and olive oil from Lucca. Stop at every delicious espresso bar you find, and try the mouthwatering pastries the locals are so fond of.
Favorite museum: Villa Borghese in Rome. The museum itself and the grounds of the villa are beautifully integrated into the surrounding park, where the Italians and their families take their Sunday passeggiata (leisurely walk) together after visiting the museum and having their espresso and cornetto. It’s the Italian version of The Metropolitan Museum and Central Park. Travel essentials: My iPad Pro for sketching, a Matt and Nat leather backpack, Baci Chocolates for the plane ride, my No Bull runners for massive amounts of walking, Lululemon pants, my superhero comic books, my James Perse wax-coated duffel bag, and, of course, a pair of Gucci loafers because they’re Italian.

DELUXE DRIVE Bentley’s all-new FLYING SPUR combines grace with pace, and a whole lot of LUXURY By Howard Walker To drive or to be driven? That’s the dilemma. Do you slide behind the wheel to pilot the world’s fastest four-door sedan, clocking in at 207 mph flat out? Or luxuriate in the back, watching the world whoosh by, while massaging, reclining, heated-and-cooled seats do the pampering? Either way you’ll be overjoyed. This is the spectacular duality of Bentley’s latest Flying Spur, arguably the world’s grandest grand tourer. The third-generation Spur (the first debuted back in 2005) has the distinction of being new from the hubcaps up. It’s a tad longer than before, with 5 inches added to the wheelbase, giving it a sleeker, more elegant look. The headlights alone are worthy of accolades. These LED wonders feature a cut-crystal effect in a stunning saw-blade design that lets them sparkle, even when not lit. Now gaze in awe at that Flying B mascot standing proud atop the grille. The wings of the B illuminate at night and the whole thing can retreat into the bodywork at the touch of a button. 66
Sharing the same basic chassis as Porsche’s Panamera sedan, the new Spur features an all-aluminum body with more curves, haunches, and bulging muscles than an Olympic weight lifter. See it in profile and it looks achingly gorgeous, especially rolling on the optional 22-inch alloys. Head-on, the new supersized grille seems huge and imposing, especially in standard guise with its vertical chrome blades. Only the new rear-end lacks visual presence; it feels like something from Volkswagen. For the driver in you, this Flying Spur just might make you sprout a pair of horns. Under that mile-long hood sits Bentley’s 6.0-liter twinturbocharged 12-cylinder, the same one used in the latest Continental GT two-door. With a massive 626 horsepower on tap, it can catapult the Spur from standstill to 60 mph in a crazy-fast 3.7 seconds. This is one superb driver’s car, with handling sharpened and honed by standard active all-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, and the world’s first 48-volt electric anti-roll system. Power it through the curves and this

5,300-pound leviathan feels more like a sports coupe. Dial up Sport mode and the suspension firms, the throttle sharpens, and the transmission becomes even more eager to shift. And if you have to stop in a hurry, the car’s massive rotors (16.5 inches at the front, 15 at the rear) halt forward progress as effectively as throwing out an anchor. There are few more commanding, more cosseting driving positions than the pilot’s seat of this Spur. Power adjustments seem endless, and it boasts an array of massaging options that wouldn’t seem out of place in a spa. One true surprise-and-delight element is the three-sided fascia panel, which can morph from being a glass infotainment screen to displaying a trio of analog gauges to an elegant wood panel.
But if you want to leave the driving to others, the Flying Spur’s rear seats are a sanctuary of silence and serenity. They offer 14 power adjustments and five massaging modes. And with soft, squishy, pillowed headrests, taking a nap is inevitable. The rear-facing glass screen on the center console is another treat. From here you can control everything, including the window shades, rear sunroof shade, temperature, and the optional 2,200-watt, 18-speaker Naim surround sound system. Hinckley’s stunning new 35 trades inboard power for a pair of outboards— just don’t call it a Picnic Boat By Howard Walker
Think of Hinckley’s iconic Picnic Boats—celebrating 25 years in build—and it’s hard to picture them without a pair of beefy diesels gushing out water, Hoover Dam–style, through Hamilton jet drives. But for the legendary Maine boatbuilder’s gorgeous new Hinckley 35 model debuting this summer, those twin diesels and water jets are being jettisoned in favor of twin outboards. It makes sense. Outboards are easier to maintain and are more efficient too. In the case of the supercharged, 300-horsepower Mercury Verado motors that’ll come standard, they’re also quieter and more refined. For speed demons, outboard power will get the new 35 to that out-ofthe-way beach quicker than diesel. With optional twin 350-hp Verados, 68
top speed should be around 42 knots, as opposed to 38 for the current Yanmar-powered 34 Picnic. Then there’s the small matter of cost. Compared to two big eight-cylinder inboard diesels and complex jet drives, outboard power should be less expensive. Right now, the base price of the new 35 comes in at $825,000. All in all, that’s a win-win-win situation. But don’t think of this 35 simply as a 34 Picnic with a couple of big outboards hanging off the transom. Hinckley called in designer Michael Peters—who has drawn all of its Picnic Boat hulls since 2008—to optimize the current 34 for outboard power. He’s included slightly wider chines (they’re the lower edges of the hull) and wider underwater strakes that run front to back. These changes will provide better lift and stability at higher speeds and offer superior control for the helmsperson. In Hinckley tradition, the hull is built using an inner layer of carbon fiber and outer layer of Kevlar infused with epoxy, then baked in a giant oven to deliver I-beam stiffness and rigidity. More instantly recognizable are the design changes to the stern. Instead of a cut-off, more upright look, the sides of the hull have been stretched and rounded. To our eyes, it’s even sleeker. Of course, there’s always a trade-off. Here it’s the lack of a full-width swim platform. Clambering back on the boat after a refreshing dip is going to be just a little more awkward. Everything else about this elegant 35-footer (overall length is actually closer to 39 feet) is pure down east Hinckley Picnic Boat. Buyers can expect the same acres of mirror-finished varnish, salty pilothouse and teak decks, and deep cockpit with comfy seating. The one big exterior update, however, that will make Hinckley aficionados instantly recognize the new look is the pilothouse windshield. In place of the traditional split screen, the 35 gets a one-piece version that debuted on the company’s Sport Boat 40x model last year. While the Picnic Boat’s split screen hardly compromised forward visibility, this full-width windshield gives CinemaScope-like forward vision. It makes

Down below it’s business as usual, with a forward V-berth, spacious head to starboard, and a modestly equipped galley to port. Although far from cavernous, it’s plenty big enough for an overnighter or weekend away. outboards for ease of docking. Yet, while the Picnic Boat connection is there for all to see, according to Scott Bryant, Hinckley’s vice president of sales and marketing, this new 35 is not a true Picnic Boat. “We’re reserving the Picnic Boat moniker for our jet boats,” he explains. We can’t imagine buyers being too happy about that. « NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2020

hen Angela and Robert Bruckner moved to Naples from Dallas almost eight years ago, it was really more of a homecoming. Robert, now vice president of Roofcrafters Inc. in Naples, attended high school here before relocating to Texas for college. Years later, he met Angela in Dallas, and they married in Naples in 2006. Their two boys, Henry, 10, and Harrison, 13, were born in Texas, but when the timing and opportunities were right, the Bruckners loaded up their Suburban and drove to the Paradise Coast from the Lone Star State for good. Angela Bruckner, a leadership and sales coach through her business, Constant Pursuit, notes that the move came with many benefits for her young family, including being close to Robert’s mother, who lives in town. In the summers, the Bruckners spend a couple months with Angela’s parents in Minnesota. In return, her parents visit Naples during Christmas. With their imminent arrival, Bruckner is pulling together an intimate gathering. As a coach, she knows when she needs help, so she called upon Kaleidoscope Floral for the greens, Mikkelsen’s Pastry Shop for butter cookies and Buche de Noel cakes, Sarah LaMont at Why Style for wardrobe, and Dani Taverna from Duality Artistry for hair and makeup. On speed dial, Bruckner has Vera Jaye of Jaye Design, who helped to renovate her Weber Woods home into a serene and timeless family oasis. Jaye pops by the Bruckners’ before the other guests arrive for a Christmas celebration. She and Bruckner work in harmony to finish up lastminute details, such as setting the indoor dining table and moving an old farm table from the patio to the middle of the three-acre lawn for

Jaye and Angela Bruckner designed the dining room table decor together, using gray linen napkins tied with raffia, accented by a cinnamon stick and a peppermint cane. The cascade of greens is from Kaleidoscope Floral in Naples. Jaye fabricated the white twig and clear ornament chandelier specially for the holidays, which she loves as a contrast to the modern art in the space.

“Vera came into this project knowing the house wasn’t ideal for our growing boys,” Bruckner says. “She created a separate space for each of them to study or entertain friends. But they are also responsible for keeping their areas tidy.” In addition to establishing a boys’ laundry room, Jaye gave lots of consideration to the kitchen area, opening it up to ensure that all four Bruckners can be in there prepping, cooking, and cleaning simultaneously. “Vera helped us take down walls and create a galley sink, the key to our efficient design,” Bruckner adds. Jaye convinced the family to swap out small existing win-

hors d’oeuvres. Jaye labored for hours to create many of the custom Christmas decor pieces on display, including a blue and green stained-glass mobile for the living room niche and a repurposed wood door that was painted white, fabricated with faux tree limbs, and topped with two owls representing Robert and Angela. Jaye’s long career in interior design brought her here from California six years ago. When Jaye is in the Bruckner family mix, with the boys sitting on the kitchen counter finishing up their favorite family tradition, making holiday wreath cookies made from cornflakes, marshmallow, and some green dye, everyone is at ease. “The Bruckners are a great family,” Jaye says. “I love that their kids were a priority in their design decisions.” Bruckner and Jaye are collaborating to finish the last bits of the Bruckner home redo, including installing Henry’s queensize bunk beds, finalizing the outdoor pool, and converting the yard shed into a man cave for Robert to share with his sons.
dows for large sliding doors with sidelights to bring in light and greenery from outside. “Looking out, it’s a painting of Florida,” says Bruckner. Working with a company in Bonita Springs, Bruckner and Jaye found a walnut slab with a raw live edge—another homage to nature—for the foyer. Always striving for organization, Bruckner wanted everything to have a place, so the slab is for keys. Another one of the home’s most striking features are the front doors. “I had two plain fiberglass doors custom-painted and added polished nickel hardware for a tailored look,” explains Bruckner. She and Jaye conspired on echoing the family’s love for the outdoors in their holiday decor. “For the entryway, I found

Jaye built this Christmas tree with some wood the Bruckners repurposed from a previous family home. She painted three heavy panels white, fashioned them together, and added pine branches and other woodsy elements, including a pair of owls on top, representing Angela and Robert Bruckner.

hand-carved bowls and a vintage bushel basket, pieces that have a story and are a nice contrast to this home, which looks sleek and perfect,” Jaye says. Back in the kitchen, the Bruckner boys are ready to sample their cookies. A student at Big Cypress Elementary School, Henry loves football, animals, and playing outside. Harrison also enjoys sports and pushes himself to excel on the field and at Oak Ridge Middle School. Whether watching them bake sweets or do chores, their mom looks on with pride. “They tackle our yard. It takes three hours to mow, but they make it fun.” Bruckner’s favorite holiday to host is Thanksgiving, which Robert’s side of the family usually attends. She goes bananas with a theme, interactive games, and mealplanning. Her Christmas celebration is intentionally toned-down. “It’s a quiet time filled with traditions established when I was very 88
young,” she says. “It’s special that my kids get to see my parents.” As she eagerly awaits their arrival, she checks on the smoked prime rib and scalloped potatoes. Going to church plays a central role in the Bruckners’ Christmas. They attend Moorings Presbyterian, a place where Bruckner has devoted several volunteer hours, especially when she first moved to Naples. “I was on a mission outreach committee. We did handson research in the trenches to learn where the biggest community needs were and how money should be distributed to maximize benefits.” More recently, she’s been distributing weekend meals or “power packs” from her church to school kids who struggle with food scarcity. She also cares for a neighbor. “I give a lot of my time to her,” she says. “I try to be as helpful as I can, but I’m also trying not to spread myself too thin. I am a coach, so I have to take my own advice.” «

T
he prestige and charm of Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula hinges on snow and tinsel-laden locales like the Tannenbaum Holiday Shop, an old church turned retail mecca with original stainedglass windows still intact. It’s a serene region, which long has been a respite for city travelers from Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and Minneapolis/Saint Paul. It’s also a nature lovers’ paradise and social distancing safe haven. “What we’re seeing in the Midwest is that more rural destinations with a lot of outdoor activities are faring better than places that are more indoor oriented,” says Jon Jarosh, director of communications and public relations at the Door County Visitor Bureau. “So, in a sense, as far as the pandemic, you might say that we’ve been preparing for it for over a century.” Bucolic, sprawling, and hospitable—and a favorite getaway for many Midwesterners who also own homes in Naples—Door County boasts 300 miles of shoreline, five state parks, and 19 county parks. Attractions along the 70-mile-long peninsula between Lake Michigan and Green Bay range from the traditional (like the fish boils at the White Gull Inn and the Christmas smorgasbord at Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Butik) to the contemporary (think shadow-box art at Plum Bottom Gallery and zip line tours at the Door County Adventure Center).

“We expect all of our businesses to be open for the winter season, which traditionally has had more limited hours because the crowds are much less than during the summer,” Jarosh says. This is good news for those who like to plunge into a packed schedule of shopping, dining, and sightseeing, starting with a stop at Renard’s Cheese, where the unfamiliar can sample their first cheese curd and learn why connoisseurs value “squeak.” Family-owned and -operated, like most businesses in the region, Renard’s produces about 3 million pounds of cheese a year at its two locations. “We’re not just selling cheese here,” says Franca Bueno, director of sales and public relations at Renard’s, which opened in 1961. “We’re

Door County, which began as a Scandinavian settlement in the mid-1800s, also takes wine and spirits very seriously, with vineyards and breweries throughout the peninsula. Door 44 Winery selections range from a dry-blend Marquette
Seasonal holiday activities abound in Door County including ice skating, the Sturgeon Bay Christmas Parade (which always features an appearance from Santa), and the Cherry Pit Spit competition at Lautenbach’s Orchard.

Owner Steve Johnson, who opened Door 44 with his wife in 2005—both attorneys seeking second careers—insist that guests sample the Bubbler, a “uniquely Wisconsin” fruity sparkling wine. Door County Distillery, meanwhile, the area’s first distillery since Prohibition, has been whipping up small-batch spirits from local ingredients for a decade. The region is nicknamed “Cherryland, U.S.A.” Nearly 14 million pounds of the fruit are produced annually, and the distillery takes full advantage, offering cherry-infused vodka, brandy, bitters, and moonshine (100 proof, no less). Teetotalers needn’t fret because there’s plenty to sip at the Door County Coffee & Tea Company, which offers a “coffee college” course for serious imbibers and pays homage to the peninsula’s penchant for cherries and holiday cheer. The rich aromas—and leave-your-diet-behind breakfast options—are reason enough for a visit, even though this local favorite does a robust online business. Festive flavors include the cinnamon-and-spice blend Door County Christmas; Spicy Nutcracker, with a hint of rum; and Mistletoe Mocha, made with dark chocolate. There’s also a year-round staple: First Pot on Us!, a peanut-butter crunch concoction.
Recreation
A mitten-warming mug by the fire is the ideal way to punctuate a day of snowshoeing, snowmobiling, sledding, or hiking, and well-groomed trails are plentiful. In fact, the region has more state parks (five) than any county in the United States. “With all of our outdoor recreational opportunities and parks, people feel safer coming here compared to other types of vacations,” Jarosh says, noting that Door County is just a gas tank away from several large cities. “Instead of a two-week trip to Europe, for example, people are opting for long weekends and romantic getaways, and we’re expecting that trend to continue in the winter. If we have snow, that’s great. If we don’t have snow, that’s also great. There’s still plenty to do.” Case in point: The Door County Maritime Museum, which features several floors of interactive exhibits and offers a guided tour of a 149-foot restored Great Lakes tugboat. The 50-yearold museum takes guests through more than a century of fishing, boatbuilding, shipwrecks, and more, going back to 1848, when storm-weary ship captain Justice Bailey sought shelter in a natural harbor that now bears his name. Door County, by the way, is named for the straits between the mainland and Washington Island, known as Death’s Door, a translation from the French voyageur term La Porte des Morts. These days, however, the name is more literal, as city dwellers seeking space clamor for acreage and, well, more doors in bigger homes. “The demand has been huge,” says real estate NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | DECEMBER 2020

broker Diane Taillon, owner of Arbor Crowne Properties, located in the lobby of the venerable Hillside Waterfront Hotel. Built in 1890 and formerly known as the Hillside Inn, the elegant bed-and-breakfast in the town of Ephraim is on the National Register of Historic Places and overlooks Eagle Harbor. “The calls started coming from people who owned vacation homes here, especially people from Chicago and Minneapolis who were thinking about moving to Door County on a more permanent basis,” she says. “But the interest has come from all over the country, and buyers have had to purchase quickly. Multiple offers are common, and our inventory is rock bottom.”
Rest Stops
In addition to the Hillside Inn, the hotel options in Door County are diverse, ranging from bed-and-breakfasts, to log cabins, to cottages, resorts, and condos. “Lodging may be different this winter because some
places may only be renting half of their rooms to allow more space for guests,” notes Jarosh. “But the plus side is that people can come here to take a deep breath and get charged back up.” Taillon, who was a real estate agent in Naples in the early 2000s and remains a founding member of the spa at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, bought the fivesuite Hillside in 2016. “Another interesting thing that started last spring besides the [increased demand for] real estate has been a change in our guests. Typically, people who stay at the inn are a little older. But we saw a huge increase in younger couples, especially as international trips got canceled.” Another tourist trend Taillon observes: weddings gone mild. “We’ve had so many micro weddings, which we limit to about 25 guests. People wanted to social distance, and they weren’t interested in big hotels. There was, and still is, a fascination for something that’s more intimate and special.” From the artfully presented organic fare at Trixie’s to the caramel-corn fun (and, of course, chocolate-covered cherries) at Door County Candy, the peninsula exudes contrast. It also offers peace and stillness for those who’d rather pause in a pew at Bjorklunden’s Boyton Chapel or revel in 1,600 acres of solitude at Ridges Sanctuary, Wisconsin’s oldest nonprofit nature preserve. As travel and lifestyle needs change, the region’s roots in Midwestern hospitality continue to serve it well. “People are very respectful of others and their personal space here,” says Taillon, whose Hillside Waterfront Hotel boasts the largest porch in Door County. “There’s plenty of social distancing to be had on the porch and upstairs on the balcony, too, but then again, there always was.” «

EAT + DRINK TRADITIONS
One of the joys of being Italian is participating in the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. This year, thanks to Pazzo!, everyone is welcome to enjoy it. “I grew up in an Italian neighborhood in New Jersey,” says Skip Quillen, owner of the Culinary Concepts restaurants (Chops City Grill, Pazzo!, Yabba, and The Saloon Wood Fired Grill). “Most years, I was the only Irish guy at the table. It’s both a great tradition and a celebration of family.” The seven-course menu will be offered at Pazzo! December 20-24. The cost is $145 per person, with an additional $95 per person for the wine pairings. It is available by reservation only and must be served to the entire table. The menu with pairings, below. 1. Seared Tuna (cucumber, citrus micros greens, white truffle balsamic) Prosecco, The White Knight, Italy NV 2. Calamari Misto (fried calamari, shrimp, sea bass, cherry peppers) Roseri, Ca Maiol Chiaretto Valtenesi, Italy 2018 3.Tuscan Bean Soup (fresh clams, escarole) Alta Luna, Vignetti delle Dolomiti, Italian blend 2018 4. Scampi alla Scampi (giant shrimp, garlic, white wine, lemon)

Tiramisu will complete the meal. In designing the menu, Quillen omitted a few old-school dishes, such as salt cod and anchovies, to achieve a more modern take on the celebration. Even so, he’s keenly aware of the role history plays in the event. “With all the craziness we’ve had this year, wouldn’t it be nice to sit down and finish 2020 with a nice dinner surrounded by friends and family?” (pazzoitaliancafe.com)

THE OTHER BUBBLY Some drink their tea, while others chew it. The masticators prefer something called boba tea (also known as bubble tea, pearl milk tea, or bubble milk tea), which has a reputation for being deliciously addictive. Boba tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. Milk tea was already popular on the island, as were tapioca balls and shaved, flavored ice. According to legend, a food stall proprietor came up with the idea of combining the ingredients, thus creating a creamy, fruity, caffeinated drink with chewy tapioca at the bottom. It spread to California on a wave of Asian immigration, and quickly became a sensation in America. “We wanted to introduce people here to boba tea,” says Kannika Bessent, owner of Tako Boba Tea and Sushi Café on Tamiami Trail. “It’s perfect for the Naples weather since it’s cold and refreshing. Children love it because of the sweetness, and it’s a great match with a wide range of Asian food.” Bessent offers nine varieties of boba in her restaurant to accompany a menu that includes sushi, Hawaiian poke bowls, and spicy dishes from her native Thailand. The majority are milk teas, and some are flavored with fruit syrups such as mango, and coconut. She boils the tapioca every morning, calibrating the cooking time to produce a consistency that is chewy but not tough. Almond milk is offered as an alternative, and customers can adjust the sweetness level to their liking. How popular is it? “We average about 60 cups per day, between dine-in and takeout,” Bessent says. “We sell more boba tea than beer.” (takobobateasushifl.com)

FROSTY FARE
THE SCOOP ON ICE CREAM In Naples, it’s usually warm enough to enjoy ice cream year-round. Satisfy dessert cravings at these new or off-the-beaten-path spots: Despite being in business since 2007, Cesibon is one of the best-kept secrets in town. The owners specialize in artisan gelato made using whole milk and fresh fruit, with a low amount of air and fat. Sixteen gelato flavors include gluten-free tiramisu, and there are a dozen sorbets that are also gluten-, fat-, and sugar-free. (cesibongelato.com) The newest spot to snag a frozen treat is the Naples Ice Cream Shoppe. Owner Jennifer Bopp uses premium, hand-packed Ice Cream Club products as the foundation for her handcrafted “sundaewiches,” sundaes in a sandwich such as the Banana Splitwich, Fudgewich, or Peanut Butter Overload. (facebook.com/naplesics) For a unique experience, head over to Vampire Penguin, which advertises “shaved snow magic.” According to owner Angie Herrington, a proprietary family recipe is mixed with filtered water and ice, then frozen to 40 degrees below zero; when shaved, the texture is creamy, light, and fluffy at the same time. A 12-ounce serving contains 50-70 calories and 10-14 grams of sugar, and toppings range from sweet and syrupy to fresh fruit. (vampirepenguin.com)

Janice Johnson is an evangelist for butter and garlic. She’s also a believer that you can accomplish anything you want in life, if you have a little help. Johnson—aka The Garlic Boss—and her Sassy Sauce exploded onto the local culinary scene in 2019. A hairdresser by trade, she was driven to find career alternatives after a combination of health issues and the COVID-19 pandemic forced her out of the salon. With the help of volunteers from Legal Aid of Collier County, her “supercharged garlic butter sauce” became a business and a reality. “I was always making the sauce for my family,” she says, “but I never expected the public would take it as seriously as they have. I started with one pot and a few dozen crabs, and I borrowed equipment from everyone I knew.” As the concept took off, she found prep space in The Culinary Accelerator in Immokalee. Her sauce is now available at Wynn’s Market and is featured at local establishments such as Golden Rind Cheese and Wine in Fort Myers and Barnhill Seafood in Matlacha. She sells online as well. Along the way, she has become aware of the positive benefits of

And as someone who suffers from both diabetes and lupus, she knows that people can’t define themselves by their illnesses. “I want to show the world the incredible people that come from Immokalee, and I want to motivate them to overcome their problems. Dating back to the 1750s, Warre’s Warrior is the world’s oldest Port brand.

percent. The fortification process probably originated before refrigeration as a way of shipping the wine without spoiling it. There are two main types of Port: those aged in barrels and those matured in glass bottles. The major Port producers (such as Dow’s, Graham’s, Warre’s, Fonseca, Sandeman, and Quinta do Noval) all have distinctive house styles, and there are different ways to enjoy each. Here, we offer a quick guide to the major categories of Port. White: The only version produced from white grapes, white Port is made in a variety of styles, from dry to sweet, and primarily consumed as an aperitif. Basic white Ports can be served on the rocks or mixed into a cocktail, while aged versions are best served chilled and straight up. Ruby: This is the least expensive and most popular style. Ruby Port is matured in concrete or stainless-steel tanks and usually bottled anywhere between three to five years. It is bright, fresh, and fruity, a popular choice before a meal in France and elsewhere. Ruby Reserve Port: Formerly known as Vintage Character, this is a ruby aged between five and seven years and that represents a blend across vintage years. It can serve as a good introduction to a Port producer; examples are Fonseca Bin 27, Warre’s Warrior, Graham’s Six Grapes, and Sandeman Founder’s Reserve.
An introduction to Portugal’s signature FORTIFIED WINE and its many varieties By Mark Spivak
A glass of Port is a perfect ending to a holiday meal—not surprising, since it can bring almost any dining experience to a hedonistic conclusion. Despite its appeal, however, Port is widely misunderstood. The genuine article is sourced from grapes grown in Portugal’s Douro Valley and made near the city of Porto, in the suburb of Vila Nova de Gaia. Permitted grape varieties are mostly red and thick-skinned, yielding a fullbodied and tannic wine. Fermentation is halted by the addition of neutral grape spirits, resulting in a sweeter wine with an alcohol level of nearly 20 110 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED

Tawny: As opposed to ruby, tawnies are aged in barrels and take on more tannin through their contact with the wood; the longer they’re aged, the drier they become. When bottled without an age statement, they are generally about three years old, and older examples range from 10 to 40 years. A Colheita is a vintage-dated tawny. Late Bottled Vintage (LBV): Sometimes referred to as the poor man’s vintage Port, an LBV is left in cask longer than a vintage Port (four to six years). While lighter and less complex than the vintage version, it is ready to drink upon release. It has less sediment than vintage Port and is popular in restaurants as a result. Vintage Port: The most famous and expensive of them all, vintage Port is bottled after two to three years in cask and requires extended bottle aging to reach maturity. The grapes come from the best harvests, and producers typically declare only two or three vintages per decade. Single

quinta Ports come from a specific estate. What about food pairings? If you subscribe to the theory that a dessert wine should be sweeter than the dessert it accompanies, Port is the perfect match for crème brûlée, pumpkin and pecan pie, and chocolate in all its forms. It also has an affinity for strong cheeses, particularly those that are aged or smoked. A Port wine reduction is a classic sauce for roasted red meats, poultry, and game. And if you can find an intensely sweet, miniature cantaloupe, cut it in half, hollow out the center, and fill it with ruby Port—it’s the next best thing to being in Provence. «

AUDREY SNOW
Photos are vital in capturing precious holiday moments. To snap the best pictures, follow these tricks from Audrey Snow Owen, owner of Audrey Snow Photography in Naples. (audreysnow photography.com) Go for the Golden Hour: The last hour of daylight is immensely flattering, as is early morning light. Avoid harsh midday sun that keeps everyone squinting. Be wary of standing in front of a sunset, too. “The phone [camera] is trying to focus on the sun and is not worried about light on faces,” says Owen. During sundown, tap the subject’s face on your phone screen to give it more light exposure. To achieve a lovely, diluted glow, the photographer should have his or her back toward the sun. You’re on Candid Camera: Owen suggests focusing a photo shoot around an activity at home, such as cookie decorating, because you’re in a natural environment. Get kids to say silly things, like “Cookies, pleeeease!” That “ee” sound Owen notes translates into smiles for everyone. Hold that the last hour your smartphone’s home button to take of daylight pics in burst mode, then go back and (AKA Golden Hour) is choose the perfect image. a beautiful Light up the Night: To combat the time for photos. dark, use someone’s phone flashlight as additional light. “If you have someone Artifact Uprising (artifactuprising.com) for holding their phone off to the side using the its gorgeous calendar layouts and bound layflashlight feature, the photo looks less flat and flat albums made from recycled fibers. Paper more dynamic,” says Owen. NI ’S WELLNESS GIFT GUIDE COVER-UP Chic masks are the new must-have accessory. The Coco Chanel–worthy Katie May sequin face mask ($26) puts an elegant spin on 2020’s top health precaution. It’s elegant, fits securely, and won’t inhibit conversation during cocktail hour. (katiemay.com)
SANCTUARY SCENTS Adorning a home with holiday candles adds festive flair and can help you practice mindfulness, according to research in the journal Explore. Find your Zen with the new High Society candles (from $125) by Baobab Collection. The amber-infused Gatsby candle has a welcoming scent with hints of peppery treats and pine forests. St-Tropez Home, Naples (st-tropezhome.com)
HELPING HANDS Portable hand sanitizers are ubiquitous, so add a twist with the Old World Christmas hand sanitizer bottle blown-glass ornament ($20, oldworldchristmas. com) or the NCLA Beauty peppermint mocha hand sanitizer ($8, nclabeauty.com) with moisturizing aloe and vitamin E.
FLOWER POWER Heading to a dinner party? Bring flowers. A study in Evolutionary Psychology showed that when women received flowers, their mood stayed upbeat three days later. Order from Bloom Nation, a floral network that works with local florists to deliver bouquets nationwide. Try something unexpected, yet still seasonal. “Peach ‘Shimmer’ roses combined with garnet calla lilies, phalaenopsis orchids, magnolia, and cypress can say holiday in Naples,” says Barbara Samaniego, owner of Focus Floral in Naples who works with Bloom Nation. (bloomnation.com)
QUICK CURE
Hangover Helpers Holiday parties are full of mirth, until you wake up to a headache that feels like elves tap-dancing on your scalp. According to the Alcohol Hangover Research Group, there are almost 50 psychological and physical après-booze symptoms, many of which can last for 24 hours. These three natural remedies will help keep you merry through holiday soirées without next-day misery.
1
CATCH SOME ZZZZ’S. Sleep bolsters your immune system and plays a role in how alcohol is metabolized. When you’ve had one too many, you’re likely to experience disturbed sleep, which will increase hangover symptoms the next morning. If you’re already not getting enough shut-eye, that fatigue is likely to hit harder, so schedule a good night’s rest the evening before you start drinking.
2
SIP ELECTROLYTES IN THE MORNING. Alcohol is a diuretic. Water may not replenish the electrolytes your body needs to recalibrate, but coconut water, which is high in potassium, can help you rehydrate.
3
SUPPLEMENT SIPS WITH VITAMINS. Research shows that zinc will take the zing out of heavy drinking. Opt for two black cherry– flavored H-Proof tablets ($40, h-proof. com), which contain zinc, essential vitamins and minerals, and dihydromyricetin, an extract from a Japanese raisin tree that’s been used to cure post-drinking symptoms for centuries. Modern science shows that it helps suppress inflammation of the liver.

What’s MASKNE? Wearing a mask for long stretches creates the perfect breeding ground for acne, which can result from sweat, oil, and bacteria, says Kristen Pechacek, chief growth officer at MassageLuXe Spa, a franchise with more than 20 locations in Florida, including Naples. You can keep wearing a mask and have clear skin underneath, if you follow these three easy steps. (massageluxe.com)

MOISTURIZE: “Maskne can form from the friction of the mask on the skin,” explains Pechacek. “Wear a clean mask on top of clean skin with a light moisturizer to create a barrier.” Skip pore-clogging ingredients like parabens, fragrance, and mineral oils and look instead for moisturizers with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. CUCKOO FOR HOT COCOA
Next time you’re in the mood for a drive-through mocha, skip the line and make your own hot chocolate. “Chocolate has long been known to soothe the soul, but dark chocolate that has at least 70 percent cocoa has been scientifically proven to help the heart,” says Norman Love, founder of Norman Love Confections in Naples. “Dark chocolate also contains the amino acid tryptophan, which produces serotonin in the brain, promoting feelings of calm and well-being.” The almond-shaped cocoa bean is heralded for its polyphenols, plant compounds said to help with everything from digestion to Type 2 diabetes to brain health. It also has a treasure trove of minerals such as sodium-balancing potassium, oxygen-carrying iron, and immunityboosting zinc. For a healthful holiday treat, try Norman Love’s recipe for the Ultimate Hot Chocolate. (normanloveconfections.com) Ingredients 2 cups milk Dark chocolate In a small, heavy-bottom saucepan, heat milk over low-medium heat. Try unsweetened coconut, almond, or oat milk as dairy alternatives. Coarsely chop about 1/2 cup of dark chocolate as the foundation for your hot cocoa. Love prefers 70 percent Andoa Chocolate Bar ($7) made from organic, fair trade–certified cocoa beans from Peru. Slowly stir in the chocolate chunks until they melt. Stir to mix and then serve in individual mugs.

TOP TOPPERS • So Delicious Coconut Whipped Topping has just 2 grams of sugar and about a third less saturated fat than whipped cream. It rivals in taste to the starchy carb-and-cornsyrup-laden marshmallows. • Navitas Organics Cacao Nibs delivers an added boost of antioxidants. Unlike store-bought chocolate sprinkles, these have a bitter, fruitier flavor that can be mellowed with light roasting, giving your hot cocoa a s’mores-like essence. • Hailed for their anti-inflammatory benefits, cinnamon and cayenne pepper convert a plain hot cocoa into a fabulous Mexican hot chocolate. This flavor infusion means you can skip crushed peppermint candies.

WEALTH

A LOOK BACK at the factors that influenced the LOCAL REAL ESTATE market this year By Judy Martel The news about residential real estate in 2020 was both good and bad. First, the good news: Ultra-low mortgage rates brought buyers out in droves. The bad news? There wasn’t enough inventory to satisfy demand. “In general, the numbers in Florida are following the same trend across the entire country,” says Brad O’Connor, chief economist at Florida Realtors. “Except for a brief dip in March, when some owners took their homes off the market at the outbreak of the pandemic, we’ve seen an enormous demand largely because of record-low interest rates on 30-year mortgages.” Mid-year, 30-year fixed mortgage rates
dropped below 3 percent, marking the lowest level since Freddie Mac began keeping track in 1971. Factors working against homebuilders hampered new inventory. Ongoing trade difficulties with China coupled with Canadian lumber tariffs wreaked havoc on the supply and prices of building materials, O’Connor explains. “We definitely had some wild and crazy stuff going on. At one point, lumber prices were triple what they had been earlier in the year.” The skilled construction labor workforce is also lower than normal. Subsequently, developers have been building larger, more expensive homes that promise higher profits. That locks out first-time buyers and increases demand across the state—especially in Southwest and South Florida—for affordable housing. The pandemic played a role in housing’s performance, though not as major as analysts might have predicted at the outset. In what O’Connor notes is being called the “March phenomenon,” sellers who weren’t in a hurry to unload their homes pulled them off the market, increasing the dearth in inventory. In April, listings started trickling back and steadily rose each month, though still short of the supply needed. Across the state, single-family homes priced above $300,000 have been selling the fastest compared with last year, with those priced above $1 million enjoying the greatest increases. “It’s not unusual coming out of
120 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
120_WEALTH_1220.indd 120
10/29/20 4:18 PM
a recession, because the stock market is among the first major economic indices to recover, and it has rebounded pretty nicely since the drastic decline in March,” O’Connor says. The so-called “wealth effect” kicks in when investors see the gains in their stock portfolio and subsequently feel richer. Some wealthy people are also reassessing the distribution of their assets and putting more money in real estate, O’Connor adds. “We saw the same thing after the Great Recession in 2009.” Realtors across Florida have reported a pandemic-fueled demand in housing from Northerners seeking to escape congested cities and move into larger homes with home offices and plenty of separate space for kids.
It makes sense, says O’Connor, who also points out that actual numbers to support buyer migration typically come from the IRS or Census data and lag by a year or two. Whether more people will have the ability to work from a home office depends somewhat on the progression of the pandemic, leaving some buyers with a wait-and-see attitude. “Lots of companies don’t have their post-COVID plans in place, so employees won’t know if they will continue to have the option to work from home.” The success of the coming year will be most strongly influenced by a continuation of the low-interest-rate environment and the post-pandemic economic situation, but O’Connor says the trend over the past few years of not building enough to meet demand likely won’t be reversed any time soon. “With increased demand, especially for single-family homes, and increasing population, we need more new listings than usual.” «

A HISTORIC ANNIVERSARY

There is a festive Christmas mood at Historic Palm Cottage as the Naples Historical Society celebrates the 125th anniversary of Naples’ oldest home. Though the annual black-tie Christmas Gala on the historic grounds has been canceled, the Historic Palm Cottage is “gently decorated” to celebrate the season. This National Register of Historic Places landmark serves as the headquarters for the nonprofit Naples Historical Society and as a 3,500-square-foot portal into Naples’ rich and colorful past. The half-acre Norris Gardens at Palm Cottage continue the story of local history through a botanical perspective and make an excellent starting point for departing on a two-hour, docentguided walking tour of the Naples Historic District. Make reservations for an afternoon tour of the cottage December 2-26, Wednesday through Saturday. In the meantime, enjoy these photos of Christmas Galas past. (napleshistoricalsociety.org) 1. the founder of Naples Hidden Gems and Hidden Gem Photography in Naples, feels comfortable behind the lens. Amid raising her two daughters, ages 16 and 23, the 18-year Naples resident squeezes in time to write social media posts for her local blog and create podcasts for 239 Uncensored. Baker hails from Maine and says, “I grew up in Old Town and am a member of the Penobscot Indian Nation. I attended elementary school on our reservation and am very proud of my heritage.” A graduate of the University of South Florida, she started her career teaching, but shifted to something more creative seven years ago. “I changed my life and made it what I wanted. I volunteered doing nonprofit shoots and then landed freelance jobs. Finally, I met Charlie McDonald and he needed someone to run his photography company. I jumped at the chance and only recently went back out on my own.” Her nonprofit passion is currently focused on helping Youth Haven, Champions for Learning, the Immokalee Foundation, and the Boys and Girls Club through her photography work. Her dream photo 1 shoot location is Wiggins Pass. “It provides the perfect variety of beach, woods, boardwalk, and driftwood,” she says. Below, her top spots to…
