Greenwich to Palm Beach

Waterfront Properties’ Eric Ditri Knows the Way Sellers and Buyers Follow His Lead An agent in Waterfront’s Palm Beach office, Eric Ditri relocated almost ten years ago from Greenwich, Connecticut. He transitioned to Palm Beach area luxury real estate direct from an executive position at Greenwich’s Gatehouse Partners, LLC, a luxury estate homebuilder building high-end homes in Connecticut, New York and Martha’s Vineyard. “Where I came from has a lot to do with why I chose Waterfront. I did a lot of research on local firms to find one that offered me a similar combination of structure and resources. Hands down, Waterfront gave me the best opportunity to reach the goals I’d set for myself. Most of the agents I viewed as successful were all at Waterfront.”

Eric-GMG.indd 2-3

Promotion

Now, nearly a decade later, Eric is one of the successful agents who sellers and buyers look to with confidence. The foundation of his considerable business was built almost entirely on Waterfront-supplied leads. Eric said his transition from luxury real estate builder in the northeast to luxury home sales in Palm Beach is precisely what makes him a much more effective agent for Palm Beach buyers and sellers. “So much has gone into my evolution as an agent. There’s Joan Thomson’s 50 years of experience. She still works with me in drafting precise contracts to avoid mistakes that can bog down a transaction. I have the advantage of an in-house marketing team. I’ve learned what works to market a property.” Eric continued, “There are so many ways to sell real estate. Waterfront taught me there’s only one ‘right’ way.” Waterfront Properties Owner Rob Thomson said Eric himself was the biggest factor in any success he’s achieved. “There are two keys that really work for Eric. First, he’s extremely effective. He’s the guy who makes sure transactions are efficient. He doesn’t needlessly tax clients’ time in any way. Second, he knows Palm Beach incredibly well from both a value-to-market perspective and the social lifestyle that many buyers want. Being from Greenwich, he’s made the leap many buyers hope to make.” The Wall Street Journal reported as recently as April 2019, some of the wealthiest New Yorkers “have decamped to Florida in search of more favorable tax rates.” The flow from the Eastern Seaboard to Florida has not slowed. Rob added, “Eric helps these buyers make the transition seamlessly.” Eric said, “Seeing our process work time and again, it’s not just good timing or luck. As just

WAT ERFRONT PROPERT IES AND CLUB COMMUNITIES

one example, I took over a listing that previously sat unsold for more than a year. The home was said to be overpriced. We properly marketed the property, at a higher price. It sold in two months. I attribute that to aggressive marketing and strategic international marketing.” Today, and certainly almost ten years ago, many brokerages, especially some in Palm Beach, continue to follow the old model of real estate that depends largely on who you know. “Waterfront’s entire model hinges on how much we know.” Eric went on to say, “Palm Beach is really a perfect test case for the success a modern, well run, and resourced brokerage can attain in what’s often described as a traditional market. When presented with the truth only data can tell, even the old guard takes notice.” Resources Eric touts include Waterfront’s listings featured on almost 6,000 websites, including Waterfront’s award-winning website, capturing qualified buyers from the local market, across the country and internationally. Waterfront was hand-selected by two exclusive international broker networks to represent the networks in Waterfront’s market area: The Board of Regents—a prominent network of LRE, the world’s most elite luxury real estate professionals—and an exclusive alliance with Mayfair International and Mayfair’s 376 offices across 50 European countries. Dedicated agents “in-country” act as personal advocates for Eric’s sellers’ properties. A former USTA tennis professional and accomplished golfer, Eric enjoys the lifestyle he sells. “To be able to do the things I love year round is very special. I get why people come here. I love that I get to help them.”

ight years ago, my family bought a lake house in North Carolina on a beautiful freshwater lake east of Asheville, with the intention of making great summer memories and escaping the South Florida heat. This year marks our ninth summer at the lake, and the last year our son will technically be a child (he turns 18 next summer; how is that possible?!). Each summer, we invite family and friends, and each summer we challenge ourselves to do something new. Three summers ago, at the young age of 48, I taught myself and our son, his friend and another 50ish friend of mine how to wakeboard with YouTube videos. Wakeboarding 101 served us well, as my son now loves to wakeboard every summer, and it’s a skill he’ll keep with him for the rest of his life. He’ll also keep with him the sights, smells, sounds (his voice echoing over the water as he flirts with the girls of summer), tastes (homemade peach ice cream) and nostalgic feelings of spending his childhood summers at the lake, and hopefully one day he’ll bring his own children to the lake and we’ll make indelible memories with them. Every summer has its story. I remember saying in the beginning of our lake summers, how this summer couldn’t possibly be topped, but inevitably next summer was different, new, unique and somehow better than the last. As summer approaches, many South Floridians head to cooler climates. One refuge, popular with New Yorkers looking to escape the city life, is the Hamptons. With our Guide to the Hamptons on page 97, we break down each of the unique villages that comprise the island, with their distinct personalities, so you can choose what suits your personality and fit right in. If you’re dreaming of something more European, and/or more permanent, then for the price of an entry-level house in Florida, you can buy a mansion in the Tuscan countryside and live out your “Under the Tuscan Sun” fantasy. If romantic Italian villages and charming streets beckon you, look to our home buying guide in Tuscany, where your dream of making homemade pasta, tagliata and panna cotta can become a reality. A little closer to home, we provide a tour of interior designer Diane Parisian’s passion project in Old Palm Golf Club. Going for a modern-yet-classic look, she achieved a perfect timeless retreat. Regardless of where this summer takes you, we hope you will take us along for the journey, as we share our stories with you and make you part of our family. We’ll see you back in September to kick off the fall and our new season. We have an amazing editorial lineup planned for you, and just like summers, each year is somehow better than the last.

BEAUTY’S BEST FRIEND

hris Appleton’s first client was his mother. Growing up in England, he’d style her hair up, or down, or with accessories, as she watched TV. Then, he’d tell her to have a look. “She’d look in the mirror and you’d notice she’d stand differently,” he recalls. “Her shoulders would go back, and for a moment she would forget who she was and see this slightly different character looking at her, or alter ego.” When he was 13, Appleton was old enough to get a job at a salon. Then, he started working fashion shows in Milan, Paris, London and New York. “I used to pay for my own flights, pay for my own accommodations. I’d always stay in some terrible little hostel,” he says. “And I would do all of that just to pass hairpins at the Chanel show at 4 a.m. in the morning. I’d have no sleep, but I was always so visual. I’d look around; I was like a sponge absorbing everything.” His career gained momentum in 2010 after he won on the London TV show “Hairdresser of the Year,” and Rita Ora asked him to style her on a world tour. Appleton has since moved to Los Angeles, and this year he was presented a Hollywood Beauty Award on stage by Kim Kardashian, who is part of his client roster that also includes Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande. During his recent trip to South Florida, we caught up with Appleton to find out the season’s hottest trends and what it’s like to work with big names. How do you handle the all-eyes-on-you pressure of styling high-profile clients?

I think I handle the pressure by doing the work. I put the work in; I put the prep in; I think about it a lot; I spend the time trying to execute the look as best I can; I have plenty of options; and I guess I go above and beyond what’s expected, and that’s how I cope with the pressure. Because I think if you do that you then have the confidence. And people believe in passion, and when you’re dedicated to

20

something. I think that’s infectious. You work with celebrities who make hair headlines. What’s it like to be constantly cycling in new looks?

Years ago, it used to be one look. In the ’60s it was the bouffant, and in the ’80s it was the mullet and the perm; every year it was a significant hairstyle. Nowadays, every day is a new look, and fashion is the expectation of change; it’s the expectation of shock; it’s the expectation of social media, flicking through, looking for inspiration like, ‘Oh, what’s next, what’s next?’ Girls more than ever want more than one look; they want short hair one minute, long the next; they want to color it. That’s why hair extensions and wigs are popular now. When working with someone like Kim Kardashian do you come up with the inspiration or does she?

I think it’s always a collaboration for sure, but sometimes I’ll be like, ‘Oh why don’t we do this? I saw this.’ I send Kim pictures all the time, or she’ll send me pictures. She’ll be like, ‘This is cool.’ So there’s always stuff floating around. Although it might not happen at that particular moment, eventually it’ll come around.

What is your favorite celebrity look you’ve done to date?

There’s so many. I mean, glass hair was a great thing that became a big trend, and that started with Kim. I love Miami, that’s when we did the neon green hair; that was so much fun. I loved it when JLo had her 50inch hair—that was in Miami, actually. I loved Ariana’s cover of British Vogue. It was always kind of a dream of mine when I was little to do the cover of Vogue because that was always like the Bible. So that was one of those mo-

ments where you’re like, ‘Wow, I’m actually doing this, this is really happening.’ Tell me about your favorite products.

Probably my favorite product is Color Wow’s Dream Coat because it’s a huge part of the whole glass hair trend. It’s humidity proof, perfect for [South Florida]. Also I love the Color Wow Mineral Powder—it’s a root touch up—because that’s great to cover hairlines, cover root extensions. What are some hair trends for summer and fall?

Definitely bangs. People are playing a lot with bangs. You’ll see them with bangs one minute and then without the next. A lot of them use clip-on bangs, and they’re really good now. A lot of it is customizing it, so taking it to the salon and getting someone to cut it for you and show you how to put it in. You won the Lori McCoy-Bell Hairstyling Award a few months ago— congrats! And Kim Kardashian presented you with the award. Tell me about the moment.

It was just so special to have Kim take the time to come and do it. It was so kind of her. She’s a mom, it was a Sunday, she could have been with her kids, but she took the time to give back, and I think that really says so much about her. And for her to present the award meant so much because she’s my hair muse, so it really meant the world for me.

Capturing the South American Spirit Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz on making waves in the fashion industry. Interview By M E L I S S A P U P P O

eminine silhouettes are indicative of designer Johanna Ortiz’s eponymous collections. Pieces feature distinctive ruffles and prints; bold color pairings; and a playfulness that warrants a twirl. It’s all part of the vision Ortiz set out to create when starting her namesake label in 2001. Prior, she left her South American roots to study at the Art Institute of Florida. “Back in those days, you couldn’t find a school for fashion design in Colombia,” Ortiz says. “Florida has always been in my heart. I grew up going there every summer and still have my vacation home in South Florida.” An encounter with the online fashion discovery platform, Moda Operandi, and its owner, Lauren Santo Domingo, would later lead Ortiz to feature a trunk show on the site. Numerous collaborations followed, thus officially launching the line internationally in 2014. Today, the designer label is carried in more than 73 stores globally, including South Florida retail locations like Kirna Zabête, The Webster, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. We recently met up with the Colombian designer during a trunk show in partnership with Kirna Zabête at The Royal Poinciana Plaza. Donning her Mysterious Soul One-Shoulder Georgette Dress, she showcased her

SUMMER 2019

Spring-Summer 19 and Pre-Fall collections. Here, she talks inspiration, her role in dressing women and what’s next for her brand. On designing the new collections...

I’m always an advocate that there are no frontiers. You can mix cultures and make it look beautiful. For SpringSummer 2019, the starting point of the collection was Paul Jacoulet, a true Renaissance man. [He’s] French but born and raised in Japan. A good calligrapher and a recognized butterfly collector, his favorite clothes were kimonos. The muses of Jacoulet and his daydreaming scenarios set the color palette for the collection. For Pre-Fall 2019 it was the nymphs of John William Godward laid down over a decadent leopard fur blanket... It’s all very hedonistic. Also, our beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains near the Caribbean Sea. There you’ll find jaguars still in their natural habitat—wild, elegant, fearless. On her Colombian culture’s influence on designs...

My Colombian roots will always be the inspiration of the collections. Latin America is a

rich culture driven by authentic aesthetics. I live in the Pacific of Colombia. The Pacific coast has a lot of heritage, and it has a lot of cultures. It’s a festive city. We’re known as the capital of the salsa dance. On dressing women...

I want the brand to be part of the modern woman’s closet. I use most of the long dresses or kimonos as my everyday uniform. It’s not about dressing up only for evening or cocktails, but to make your every day a little more special. That’s my goal each time I sit and design. On upcoming adventures...

I would love to do a home collection. I love prints. I love fabrics. Decoration has been one of my passions, and I do it for my houses. But I’ve never [done] it as a business. Since I have a lot of prints that I develop by myself, I probably could use the prints for the house.

Callidus offers a selection of designer jewelry.

Callidus Palm Beach A local designer opens a retail space in the Paramount Building By Melissa Puppo

A

sk Katherine Shenaman why she chose “Callidus” as her new boutique’s name and she’ll tell you she “just fell in love” with the Latin word meaning “clever, creative, or sly.” “It’s unique. It’s different. It rolls off the tongue,” Shenaman adds. A gorgeous yellow and white tulip display sits below a Ngala Trading Co. leather chandelier inside the store, which sells home decor and gifts. The boutique on North County Road is attached to Shenaman’s design studio, Katherine Shenaman Interiors. She moved to the famous Paramount Building from Antique Row to open Callidus Palm Beach in winter.

HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTEST

The concept of Callidus Palm Beach is simple. “On the north end of the Island, there aren’t too many shops where people can grab and go,” Shenaman says. “If you need a hostess item and you don’t want to drive all the way to Worth [Avenue], you can come here and grab a small hostess gift, even if it’s a candle or linen tea towels.” The store blends a mixture of modern, coastal and tropical pieces that can fit the most modern to the most traditional homes. But there’s more thought behind the store’s inventory than just choosing what’s pretty; as a designer first, Shenaman has curated a selection of items that can be used to complete a home, such as decorative boxes, picture frames, candles, coasters and lamps. Instead of scouring a dozen different stores to find final touches, Callidus Palm Beach is a one-stop shop.

DESIGNER DOSSIER

The design guru has spent the last several years traveling and making new connections with designers, many of whom she features inside. Shop bud vases and bowls from Boston ceramicist Jill Rosenwald. The Turkish glass line, Nude, features timeless trays and barware. There are also Coqui Coqui candles from Mexico, which Shenaman became intrigued by for their packing and alluring scents. Palm Beach favorite Harrison Morgan has partnered with Callidus Palm Beach to sell his limited edition jewelry line, while this fall the boutique will carry Mark Addison’s beloved coffee table book, “Cocktail Chameleon.” Shenaman’s personal favorites include the Cobra Candlestick collection in rose gold and sterling silver from Danish silversmith Georg Jensen. “I see what he’s doing today, and I think it’s beautiful,” Shenaman says of Jensen’s work. “I think that’s applicable in a modern setting and a traditional setting.” Additional items for sale include furniture, pillows and blankets, to napkin rings and kitchen accessories. Browse serving essentials like cutting boards, a selection of knives, caviar dishes with horn spoons and decorative water pitchers. There’s even stationary to accompany purchases that are gifts.

Florie’s Palm Beach Michelin-starred chef Mauro Colagreco opens his first restaurant in the U.S. By Melissa Puppo

W

hen discussing menu highlights with chefs, something simple like “bread for the table” usually doesn’t make it into the conversation. But at the newly opened Florie’s Palm Beach, chef Mauro Colagreco makes a case for his loafs, noting, “the signature sharing bread with lemon-ginger olive oil is very personal to me since it was inspired by my grandmother’s recipe and uses beautiful Florida citrus.” Just as Colagreco broke bread among close friends and family growing up, he recreates the tradition for diners with a new rendition—a delicate, fluffy loaf that resembles six flower petals, can be broken off for each person. It’s is presented with a printed poem about bread by Hamachi Pablo Neruda. The Argentine-Italian chef behind France’s threeMichelin starred Mirazur—that’s also No. 3 on the “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list—opened his first U.S. outpost earlier this year in partnership with the Five-Star, Five-Diamond Four Seasons Resort & Spa Palm Beach following a recent multimilliondollar renovation.

Doing so, he says, was an instinctive decision. “I felt a sense of comfort when I visited Palm Beach for the first time,” he says. “The climate here with the abundance of sun, produce and coastal qualities reminded me of my home in the south of France, so it felt like a natural place to open my first restaurant in the U.S.” The name Florie’s is an ode to Florida and Colagreco’s love for gardening, something the restaurant plays upon by growing its own herbs and edible flowers. They’re then incorporated into dishes like the hamachi or used as delicate garnishes for cocktails such as the Field of Flowers made with vodka,

rosato, lemon, mint, lavender and prosecco. Menu items center around fire-cooking techniques Colagreco picked up from his travels and while opening numerous restaurants around the world. He uses a hearth oven, yakitori grill and a tandoor oven. The à la broche—a rotisserie-style method of roasting—is used to make the Roasted Maine Lobster that’s accompanied by Mediterranean tomato and black olives with a cucumber honeydew salad. Make a point to order the Salt-Crusted Market Fish that is carved out from beneath the layer of salt it’s baked in. The Australian Wagyu Beef is grilled on the yakitori and comes with red pepper and house-made shallot vinegar, while the exclusive Four Story Hill Truffled Chicken features Albufera sauce, summer truffles and crushed potatoes. The wow factor continues with Florie’s certified in-house wine and water sommelier Jessica Altieri, who helped design a water menu for the restaurant and a sustainable wine-by-the-glass program. She’s hosting Sips of Summer classes from now until October, teaching guests how to pair wines with food. There’s also Matthew Dress, the lead mixologist who takes cues from classic libations to make Florie’s originals. The Positano—made with Teeling Irish whiskey, Campari and Carpano Antica with pineapple and topped with a citrus shrub—is one cocktail with delightful looks to match its taste.

Iconic Islander Lilly Leas Ferreira, granddaughter of Lilly Pulitzer, maintains her family’s fashion legacy as the general manager at The Royal Poinciana Plaza. By Clarissa Buch

F

rom as early as she can remember, Lilly Leas Ferreira, 30, the granddaughter of designer and Palm Beach icon Lilly Pulitzer, was taught to dream big. Pulitzer, fondly remembered as the “Queen of Prep,” instilled a sense of female empowerment in Ferreira that is still very much present today. “I had a little girl a few months ago,” says Ferreira, speaking of her newborn daughter, Lillian, marking the fifth Lillian in the family beginning with Ferreira’s great grandmother. “Thinking about growing up with ‘granny’ and now having a daughter, it’s all coming full circle. I’m so fortunate to have had her in my life. She brought such a special type of energy and livelihood to my family.” This past January, Ferreira, who was born and raised in Palm Beach, was appointed general manager of The Royal Poinciana Plaza, an upscale mall known for its food, fashion and entertainment. That, too, was a full-circle moment, she says. “My grandmother taught me through example,” she says. “She always took on new challenges, and that’s certainly something I try to emulate. My grandmother is so well known for the brand and lifestyle she created, but she also left behind a legacy of inclusion, compassion and empathy, which together helped her find success. Now as a young professional trying to make my own mark, I make sure kindness and empathy are part of my own mantra too.” Ferreira, who attended Florida Atlantic University, has always had an entrepreneurial spirit, opening her own public relations firm a few years after graduation and later selling it to attend the University of Florida for an accelerated MBA program. “Opening the firm was an incredible experience,” she says. “I grew the company from three accounts to more than 30. It was all pos-

sible by constantly saying yes and stepping inside shoes that were a little bigger than what I had on. In all that I’ve done, it’s about rising to the occasion.” She worked in project management at NextEra Energy, parent company of Florida Power & Light, before settling at The Royal Poinciana Plaza. In her new role as general manager, Ferreira is responsible for the property’s overall success, serving as a liaison between the destination and the community. Currently, she’s focused on activating the plaza and building relationships by creating programs and experiences that position The Royal Poinciana Plaza as a hub for the Palm Beach community and grow its reputation on a global scale. “Right around the same time as the MBA program and my experience at NextEra, The Royal Poinciana Plaza was going through a major revitalization,” she says.

“I’ve been a fan and a patron for many years, so when the opportunity opened up as general manager to help add value to the project, I couldn’t pass it up. It’s not just a company. These are my friends and family.” The Royal Poinciana Plaza is at full capacity, and Ferreira says there are more than 300 events scheduled for the year. In addition to her work on the island, she is also a consultant for Lilly Pulitzer, where she advises the brand on marketing to align with her grandmother’s original vision. “We’re at a peak of energy and excitement with The Royal Poinciana Plaza,” she says. “There’s this uncapped potential and endless opportunity to make this place special. Something I’m really excited to be working on is our new initiative, Together, where we support female empowerment and female entrepreneurship. There’s just so much we can do, and we’re just getting started.”

s a New York fashion public relations and communications exec (French Connection Holdings, Hugo Boss, Dolce & Gabbana and Calvin Klein), Sarah Wetenhall spent her days knee-deep in sartorial sand, attending to myriad duties that ranged from coordinating prolific brand-marketing campaigns to shepherding shipments. Today, she applies a similar skill set, along with a killer style instinct, to her role as president and CEO of The 4 Colony Palm Beach. Steering the property’s branding, as well as shaping its sui generis guest experience, is serious business for Wetenhall but keeping things jocund is key. “I aspire to do it all in a fun and somewhat playful fashion that makes fiscal sense,” she says. Since purchasing the iconic island property in late-December 2016 with her husband, Andrew, an investment banker at Morgan Stanley, the Missouri native has been busy putting a chic stamp on the hotel’s refurbishment projects (part of a long-term renovation plan), such as a citrus-patterned restaurant revamp and a grand ballroom that boasts oceanic elements and trompe l’oeil. Being a mother of three prompted her to introduce the Family Affair dinner on Sunday nights. She also launched the program that brings guests to the beach in a custom Colony beach buggy with matching chairs, umbrella and cooler; and she offers guests complimentary custom paddleboards and beach cruiser bikes. In her spare time, she enjoys supporting children’s organizations 15 like the Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton where she’s a trustee, playing tennis and golf, practicing transcendental meditation and spending time with her children, Andrew, Amelia and Maggie.

I will often take a beach walk with a cup of coffee if I need to relax or think a bit. 15. Stepping Back in Time Bask in the spendor of a restored 18th century Georgian mansion set at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Ireland’s County Laois. By M E L I S S A P U P P O

BALLYFIN DEMESNE might be one of the most enchanting destinations you’ve never heard of. Chances are, you’re also unfamiliar with the hotel’s rich history. This was true for me when a springtime venture led me to the little gem in Ireland’s countryside.

T

ouching down in Dublin after an Aer Lingus direct flight from Miami, I would soon embrace the land of “40 shades of green.” This nickname is in part due to the country’s wet climate, witnessed while driving past sheep-filled farms and old cobblestone towns before arriving at the quite unassuming property in County Laois. There, imposing gates flanked by 5 miles of stone wall acted as a precursor to what I’d find on the other side of Ballyfin. Once given the “OK” by security, my driver navigated

34

SUMMER 2019

through a winding, heavily forested roadway sprinkled with the remaining bluebell flowers of the season. Then, all at once, the view cleared to a grand 18th century Georgian estate smack dab in a sea of rolling green parkland with an impressive lake laid out before the mansion. This would be my home for the next several days, but back in the 1820s, Lady Caroline and Sir Charles Coote lived off the land for nearly a century. They built the understated neoclassical mansion that stood before me prior to selling it to the Patrician Brothers who ran a boarding school for close to 80 years. As I stared at the four massive pillars anchoring the doorframe, it was difficult to believe that the estate nearly became a ruin. An extensive eight-year restoration beginning in 2002 returned the property to its original grandeur with several new features, like a cascading waterfall visible to the west of the man-

sion designed by Jim Reynolds. Today, Ballyfin is a top-ranked private Irish country house, earning the No. 1 spot in Travel + Leisure’s “2018 Top Hotel Resort United Kingdom and Ireland” list and receiving the No. 2 spot in its “2018 Top Hotels in the World” list. It’s visited yearly by guests near and far who descend on the 614-acre land in search of peace, grand hospitality and maybe a glimpse into the aristocratic life of years past. It didn’t take long to get caught up in the lifestyle, especially when first greeted by staff in butler garb who showed me to my room. The scent of an always tended fireplace wafted through the halls. I stayed in The Dr. Beaufort with serene green and terra-cotta French toile walls that led to an outdoor deck with a view of the recently opened Gardener’s Cottage. The charming new addition includes a spacious living room, kitchenette, two fireplaces, two bathrooms and an airy bedroom overlooking the estate’s gardens. The 20 rooms and suites inside the mansion vary from the impressive Lady Carolyn Coote Room (formerly her boudoir) that overlooks the lake done in a bold powdery blue wallpaper with a rococo stucco work ceiling, to The Westmeath with a carved French bed positioned in the center of the room with golden accents. They’re outfitted with marble bathrooms featuring walkin showers, luxurious bathtubs and next-level accessories, including a Dyson hair dryer. Like the Coote’s famous saying, “cost what it may,” Ballyfin is full of eye candy at every twist and turn. It was my duty as a guest—and a real cultural loss if I didn’t—to appreciate the rich history and architecture. The head of an Irish elk, once found in a bog in Tipperary dating back at least 10,000 years, stands guard to the Entry Hall with an antique Roman mosaic floor brought in from 1822; life-size paintings of the Coote family hang on walls near the Grand Staircase; and each reception room ceiling is so rich in detail it could have taken hours to study the designs—and that’s just scraping the surface. Typical of guests, it was easy to befriend the butlers (some attended Ballyfin in its school days) who became our go-to guides for outdoor amusement. My group and I met with Lionel and his two ponies, Ben and Kit, for a jaunt around the estate to view Ballyfin’s hidden gems, like grottos from the 1700s and a tower where you can climb 97 steps to view the green countryside. I tried my hand at clay pigeon shooting with Glenn as a teacher and, surprisingly, did well. I was on my way to becoming an Irish lass.

gulfstreammediagroup.com

(above) The Gold Drawing Room is one of Ballyfin’s most exquisitely designed rooms. (left) Stay in The Dr. Beaufort bedroom, one of 20 rooms and suites on the estate.

A special treat was the rare opportunity to get up close to birds of prey with our falconry guide, Tom. There were owls and a falcon, and we even prompted a hawk named Maude to perform a trick. The ever-so-Irish rain came and went often, but those moments became the perfect opportunities to nestle up and get lost in first-edition books from the 80-foot library. A secret bookcase led the way to an outdoor conservatory, an idyllic place to enjoy tea with bespoke china and a fresh cookie or slice of soda bread. Evenings typically ended with cocktails and a dinner made with fresh ingredients from Ballyfin’s stately gardens. At our farewell meal, the group and I tried on lavish costume gowns and accessories donated by the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

It was adult dress-up at its finest and made for a great scene in the Gold Drawing Room (arguably the most elegant room in all of the estate), where we were always greeted with a glass of Champagne and canapés followed by dinner in the Dining Room. It was difficult leaving behind the magical lifestyle I entertained for a few days, but I find comfort knowing I—like every guest who visits Ballyfin—am now part of a long-standing family tradition. The door is always open. I’ll be dreaming of that princess bedroom until my next stay.

THINKING OF ACTUALLY BUYING THAT SECOND HOME ON THE FOOTHILLS OF THE ALPS, TO LIVE OUT EVERYONE’S TUSCAN DAYDREAM? By Eric Barton

e approach the home like soldiers wary of an ambush, for some reason whispering and stepping quietly, as if ghosts await in what very well might be a haunted mansion. In the shadow of the towering home, it’s impossible at first to make out the details, the Tuscan sun hidden behind it. Our realtor, a British expat named Roy Santi, stops in his tracks in the alley, as if startled, causing me to pull up short. “Before I take you in here, I need to confess to you as if you’re the parish priest,” he says. Santi’s confession is a riches-to-ruin cautionary tale. Built originally as a reasonable three-story villa, the owners decided to expand it after coming into money. They added a shell that would have held tens of thousands of square feet. Then they lost their fortune, and here the structure has sat, far from finished, for most of a century. “Now, be careful,” Santi warns. “Part of it has fallen in.” As we get closer, it’s clear this home in the countryside of Italy is a wreck, a ruin the color of bleached bones. No windows hang in the handcarved panes. Scrap wood that passes for the back door creaks on rusted hinges. On floors of dirt, we step over large chunks of concrete that plummeted from the darkness above. Everywhere, some squatter or untold beast scattered piles of corncobs. Santi leads the way with the stark light from his cellphone, catching dust suspended in the stale air. We wind our way up a questionably constructed stairwell to inspect the cavernous empty shell of a home. Then we head back outside, maneuvering pits of mud that encircle the property like a swampy moat. It becomes clear: This place is a money pit.

60

SUMMER 2019

But squint, look hard into a future of contractors and architects and structural engineers, and you can see the magnificent home it could become. Santi explains that the property sits just outside a two-street village. Unlike other working-class Tuscan towns, with the pickups of handymen parked in many driveways, this is a noble hamlet, a place of hilltop mansions, home to landed gentry. Imagine this house, he says, with the family crests above the towering entrances refurbished; doors of rich chestnut wood and polished marble floors; salons and formal dining rooms and quarters in the back for the help; curving stairways up to parlors and studies; well-adorned third-floor bedrooms taking in the calming Italian summer breeze. It can be yours, this castle in the rough, for a negotiable $683,000. This was the sixth and final home we visited on a recent homebuying trip to northern Tuscany. It was, admittedly, mostly to fulfill a fantasy, to live out the dream we’ve all had of using the nest egg for a vacation property in view of the Italian Alps. If you’ve had the same dream, I’d recommend taking the same journey, walking into truly fascinating Tuscan properties and imagining yourself there, entertaining friends who are visiting from back home, opening Sangiovese on the terrace, actually doing that thing you’ve always imagined. Think about it: spending a few

(top left) Views abound in the northern Tuscan hills, with cool mornings burning off into lazy afternoons. hours with a realtor might just be your vacation’s most enthralling outing, a look at how the locals spend their days. The archetype Italian daydream, inspired by tales like “Under the Tuscan Sun,” always involves buying a villa near famous towns like Cortona or Siena. Those are places discovered long ago, filled now with tour buses and transplanted northern Europeans and tiny condos that’ll cost you a literal fortune. So, instead, my trip began further north, in the still inexplicably undiscovered and more affordable mountainous countryside near the town of Barga. My base of operations was the Renaissance Tuscany, a former hunting lodge converted into a grand Marriott hilltop retreat, where roaring fires in the bar warm cool nights, the restaurant starts lavish meals with hearty bowls of stews enriched with bread, and rooms offer views of Barga, its colorful medieval buildings clutching to the hilltop.

F E AT U R E

Buying a home in Italy means living like an Italian; even this $797,000 estate has the most basic of kitchens.

On the night before the home tours begin, I meet the general manager of the Renaissance by a fire crackling in the lounge off the lobby. Georges Midleje is quintessentially Italian stylish, with no less than two scarves tied around his neck, one artfully hanging down between his sport jacket and another larger one to hold out the cool Tuscan evening. Midleje recommends that anyone visiting Tuscany for a homebuying trip ought to also indulge themselves, so on his advice, I spend an afternoon soaking in the resort steam room, floating around in the indoor pool, and letting the breeze sweep into my room from the valley below. Midleje also arranges a cooking lesson with the chef, who takes me into the village to buy ingredients from the open-air market and then spends the morning showing me how to make gnocchi with a sage cream sauce. Property highlights include the spa, mountaintop views and good Wi-Fi (which might sound small until you try to find one in the villages nearby). But for the audacious who insist on owning a plot of their own, the hotel will help by providing a list of local estate agents and some tips on taking those first unknown steps to ownership. Those who commit to the area near the Renaissance will find something that’s rare for Italy and even more rare in Tuscany, Midleje says. “There are cities in Italy where you can’t move without bumping into someone’s camera. They are overrun with tourists,” Midleje says. Here, though, in the valley that holds Barga, it’s possible to buy an affordable spot in a quaint village and live like a Tuscan, seeing very few tourists, immersing yourself in what it’s like to be a local. “This is a part of Tuscany that is an undiscovered little piece of paradise,” Midleje says. “This is a Tuscany where you can live like we do, like an Italian.”

The first day of my home shopping began with a realtor named Benito Casci. Like many in Barga, his grandfather moved to Scotland a century ago when this part of Italy was in financial ruin. Casci and many other Italian expats moved back over the last few decades, giving the area a surprising mix of Scottish and Italian accents, right down to the red British-style telephone booth in the city center. Casci explains that many of the area’s palatial estates were built by Italians who made their fortunes in Scotland and returned home, building extravagant vacation homes and spacious mansions to hold the entire extended family. Casci begins our tour with a trip up switchbacks to a $797,000 home built of stone on the first floor, with a strawberry-sorbet-colored second story of stucco. It’s not hard to see, looking at the barreltile roof, where many South Florida buildings got their Mediterranean inspiration. We walk around to the front and take in the view, looking over rows of grapevines and then villages dotting the valley. Out in the distance, snow-topped mountains rise above the clouds. “Those are the marble mountains,” Casci explains. “Michelangelo got his stone from them.” Inside, the house is undeniably charming, an inviting fireplace, exposed wooden beam ceilings of chestnut wood and southernfacing windows that fill the place with sunlight. Like most houses in Italy, the kitchen is a practical place. Instead of cabinets, curtains hang from Carrera countertops. The upstairs holds three baths and six bedrooms, spacious enough for a large family or a B&B in the making. As is the custom in Italy, the homeowner has joined us for the tour, along with her excitable border collie, who keeps jumping on

everyone. She takes us on a tour upstairs, with five bedrooms and three baths. Living in a smaller home nearby, she uses this as a weekly rental, meaning, for instance, there’s income potential for a new owner spending part of the year back home in Florida. Next, Casci drives up the hillside through the village of Castiglione di Garfagnana, where slate-gray buildings look frozen in time from perhaps the 11th century. Above it, we enter a modestly adorned three-story house of rock with brown shutters pulled tight. It’s a three-two, full of chestnut wood trim. Put it in Florida and it’d be worth millions. Here, it’s yours for $433,000. We head next to the sleepy village of Fiattone, and in the interest in seeing the bottom of the market, Casci unlocks the door to an apartment. It’s one-third of a structure that was likely once a splendid manor home, now split into three attached residences. The downstairs is an open floor plan kitchen and living room, humble but modern, and undeniably Tuscan, with chestnut wood and burgundy tile floors. Two bedrooms and a bath sit below exposed beams upstairs. A large tile terrace nearly doubles the square footage and promises chill summer afternoons. The asking price is as much as some South Florida property tax bills, $91,000. The following day, Santi takes me out on a more high-end home tour. After coming over 24 years ago from England, Santi literally fell in love, with the Italian lifestyle, the countryside, and also with his future bride, a native of Lucca. They’ve settled now in a country home outside Barga. His tour starts with Villa Moorings, a three-star hotel in Barga built in the 1920s as a vacation home. The owner is in the sparse-butbroad gardens out front, and she explains that her grandfather built it after returning with a fortune he made in logging and restaurants in Scotland. After his death, it sat for two decades, unused and boarded, until the heirs finally reopened it as a 12-room hotel in 2000. The ceilings hold intricate frescoes and sparkling chandeliers. Plush red carpet leads down hallways and up wide staircases. “Splendid!” Santi exclaims as we ascend. A spiral staircase leads up to a rooftop that looks out onto the center of Barga. With bathrooms added a couple decades ago, the place is dated, in need of exorbitant refurbishing to match its price. Perhaps it could become a luxurious hotel, or maybe the new buyer will convert it back to a vacation villa. It will need untold millions, on top of an asking price just below $4 million. But yet it’s also easy to imagine it, your new life as proprietor of a Tuscan hotel, perhaps occupying the family suite while overseeing the property’s rise to a well-regarded boutique. We head a couple blocks into the center of town and push open a metal gate into a covered drive. Beyond it splays out a property including a rose garden and an olive grove, buildings scattered between them. During Italy’s fascist years, this was the residence of Barga’s mayor, and it includes eight bedrooms spread between five buildings. From nearly everywhere on the property, there’s a simply stunning view of the village rising up, filling the horizon with a Mediterranean painter’s palette of reds and oranges and yellows. At $1.4 million, it could become a place where you vacation in one of the buildings, while friends and family occupy the others, everyone meeting in the evenings for dinner at a table below the grapevine trellis. The home tour ends at the shell of a house, the place that needs someone’s fortune and their imagination. The owners live nearby in the village, and Santi explains that they’re motivated to find someone to take on the project. This huge, bank-account-draining project. “It needs a lot of energy,” Santi admits. Perhaps that someone will be you or me, living out our fantasy someday of owning a home in the Tuscan countryside. See you there.

gulfstreammediagroup.com

If You Go A homebuying trip to northern Tuscany ought to include some sightseeing along the way. Here’s where to stay and what to do. Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa From the 1,700-acre property atop a hillside, the 180-room Renaissance boasts stunning views of the valley below and the Medieval town of Barga. There’s a well-regarded restaurant, bar with a welcoming fireplace, spa, indoor and outdoor pools and lots of courtyards for that party in Italy you’ve dreamt of hosting. Prices run from a couple hundred during the offseason to thousands for the well-apportioned villa suites. The Week once wrote about this property: “The sky is vast and cloudless, the mountains a hazy, moody purple, and the bright aquamarine pool beckons.” Not a bad spot to serve as your Tuscan base of operations. marriott.com, 39.0583.7691 Scacciaguai Named for an Italian word meaning “to drive away your troubles,” this cozy bistro is one of Barga’s finest restaurants, featuring a rotating menu designed on what’s fresh that season. If luck allows, arrive in fall or early winter for dishes built around pungent truffles pulled from soil nearby. scacciaguai.it, 39.058.371.1368 Podere Còncori Owner Gabrielle Da Prato has become such a legend in biodynamic wines that Italy awarded him knighthood. A visit to his winery is a trip into a new way of winemaking, where the secrets of Tuscan farming from ancient times are used to produce funky-in-a-good-way organic wines. Be sure to book in advance a hearty lunch paired nicely with wines bottled nearby. podereconcori.com, 39.0583.766374 Gli Orti di Via Elisa A visit to northern Tuscany must include a stop in the gorgeous walled city of Lucca, where Gli Orti serves up hearty plates of pasta, red-sauceonly pizzas and gelato made in-house. ristorantegliorti.it, 39.0583.491241 The Great Grotta del Vento When you need a break from all that house shopping, head to the Apuan Alps Nature Reserve, where you’ll find what’s regarded as one of Europe’s most unique caves, covered in stalagmites and stalactites, alabaster walls and underwater streams that leave behind crystalline deposits. Those with casual interest can knock it out with an hour tour, while those with geology in their blood can opt for a three-hour descent down vertical slopes. apuaneturismo.it, 39.0585.799462

CLASSIC IMPRESSION DIANE PARISIAN TURNS AN OLD PALM HOME INTO A TIMELESS ABODE. By Jana Soeldner Danger | Photography by Robert Stevens

SUMMER 2019

W

hen interior designer Diane Parisian received a commission for a vacation home in Old Palm Golf Club, a neighborhood of Palm Beach Gardens, she was already familiar with her clients’ tastes. She had, after all, been working with them for a decade and designed three previous homes for them. “Their other home is very traditional,” Parisian says. “They wanted this one to be more modern and transitional, with a more open floor plan. But they wanted something timeless and classic, not trendy.” As with other projects Parisian had done for them, the couple wanted to be deeply involved in the design process. The husband enjoyed working with her on structure and architectural details, while his wife wanted to help choose furnishings and fabrics. The home was also to be a showcase for the couple’s collection of fine art. “We pulled colors for the design from the artwork,” she says. Parisian’s work has won ASID and PRISM awards, and what she does is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. “I knew from the time I was 6 years old and pushing furniture around the living room that this was my calling,” she says. “I meet fascinating people, and being invited into someone’s life and private world is a privilege.” The 4,800-square-foot home in Old Palm has four bedrooms and five full baths, plus a powder room and a cabana bath. Flooring throughout the main living areas uses 3-by-3-foot polished diamond white marble tiles, and custom millwork helps tie spaces together.

TH E F OYE R A polished Umbria limestone mosaic inset that mimics the look of an elegant rug adds visual interest and definition to the floor of the wide foyer, which is open to a hallway on one side and the living room on the other. On the upper section of the wall, custom millwork frames two narrow vertical tinted mirrored insets, while a horizontal one on the lower wall creates a backdrop for a wood credenza glazed with an elegant silver metallic finish. “We were looking for a wow factor,” Parisian says. Suspended from the ceiling is a large chandelier made of curved, blown glass arms and creamy silk shades. It matches two delicate wall sconces. L I VI NG R O O M In the living room, a coffered ceiling with recessed lighting immediately draws the eye. Narrow drapery panels with a pale blue-and-cream paisley hang from short walnut wood rods accented with polished chrome trumpet finials, flanking a bank of glass doors. Motorized shades can create privacy. On the floor is a handmade wool rug in soft tones of cream and blue. “She wanted a traditional element to anchor the modern furnishings,” Parisian says. The dark walnut wall unit was custom made with shelves to display artwork, cabinets for storage and accent lighting. A large inset covered with handmade pale blue wallpaper and hints of silver provides a striking backdrop for a painting with a nautical theme. A twin insert covered in textured plaster houses a large TV screen. Through the double doors off the living room is a hallway that leads to the master bedroom and his-and-her baths. When the doors are open, a large, eye-catching painting of two women dressed in formal finery is visible. Metal triangular patterns make the base of a console beneath the painting look like a piece of sculpture. Twin clean-lined living room sofas with walnut block feet are upholstered in bone chenille, and a two-tier glass cocktail table is framed in chrome. Motorized navy leather reclining chairs add color and comfort to the space. Between them

is a table wrapped in sky blue linen with a nailhead trim. Two ottomans upholstered in deep sapphire blue tufted velvet offer easily movable extra seating when it is needed. Behind the recliners is an elegant, floor-to-ceiling wine cabinet holding bottles suspended by aircraft cables in lighted glass towers. At the bottom of the unit is a chiller. On the far side of the living room is a creamy, curved marble-topped bar. Three comfortable club chairs upholstered in textured blue tweed provide seating. Behind the sunken back bar, rich walnut frames a large vertical tinted mirror and lighted glass towers, and blue stone inlays accent chrome door and drawer hardware.

(above) A polished Umbria limestone mosaic inset accents the white marble floor in the foyer. A wood credenza glazed with a silver metallic finish is an eyecatcher. (top right) A custom wall unit is a focal point in the living room. Twin sofas and motorized recliners create a seating area. (right) A large kitchen island topped with blue calcite has a waterfall edge.

K I TCH E N A large, rectangular island creates definition between the living room and kitchen. Topped with blue calcite that matches the countertops, the island has a dramatic waterfall edge and holds a farmhouse sink. Three glass globe-shaped pendant lights hang above it, while stools with walnut frames and circular chrome footrests are upholstered in a blue-gray fabric. White kitchen cabinets with long, horizontal polished chrome hardware create a clean, fresh look. The breakfast table has a cerused oak top and a silver metallic finish on the base, and chairs have light walnut legs and taupe sateen upholstery. A cobalt blue stove is an eye-catcher.

(right bottom) Custom millwork accents a focal wall in the master bedroom. The headboard and a bench at the foot of the bed are covered in matching oatmeal linen.

BUT LE R ’ S PANTRY Between the kitchen and the dining room is a butler’s pantry, perfect for keeping out-of-sight dishes and utensils used for cooking, as well as small appliances. The backsplash is dramatic with textured glazed green ceramic tile, and the butcher block countertop is walnut. Glass-fronted cabinets help create an open look. DI NI NG RO O M In the dining room, the floor is a polished diamond white marble with an Umbria limestone diamond lattice pattern inlay. On one wall, white millwork frames wall panels upholstered in gray paisley silk. Fixed drapery panels are made from the same fabric. On the opposite wall is a painting depicting iconic movie star Audrey Hepburn, the inspiration for some of the room’s color scheme. Swarovski crystal-encrusted twin half-sphere bronze chandeliers suspended from a cove ceiling with latticework detail, and wall sconces match those in the foyer. The cerused oak pedestal table has scrolled detailing and silver highlights. Chairs with oak legs are upholstered in blush linen tweed accented with chocolate velvet buttons and pleats on the back.

SUMMER 2019

CLU B ROOM & OFFI CE In the combined club room and home office, built-in dark walnut wall units that match the millwork provide display shelves and storage cabinets. Deep-cut pile carpeting adds softness to the room. A sectional upholstered in sand-colored linen was custom built to fit its space, and a bronze-framed cocktail table is topped with green bubble glass. A circular-shaped bronze chandelier has amber glass globes, and a peninsula desk finished in dark walnut has leather-wrapped drawer pulls with brushed nickel accents. “We designed it to look like a cozy library,” Parisian says. “It’s a place to work and relax that’s both handsome and functional.” M AST E R B E D ROOM The color scheme of the master bedroom was inspired by a painting of flowers that hangs in it. Tiffany blue walls accented with a pattern of narrow white molding are the backdrop for a tufted headboard upholstered in oatmeal linen, while matching material covers a bench at the foot of the bed. On the white oak floor, a handmade wool rug with a pattern in pale blues and yellows adds softness and texture. Pale blue linen drapery

panels encrusted with shimmering crystals frame the large windows and sliding doors leading to the loggia. Nightstands have a silvery taupe metallic finish and travertine insets on top. Crystal lamps with circular glass bases complement curved wall molding. A dresser complements the nightstands in the same finish, and a drum-shaped chandelier hangs from the ceiling. In the sitting area, silver nail head trim accents a clean-lined sofa with a dressmaker skirt and pale pistachio linen upholstery. An oval-shaped glass-topped table is framed in hammered metal with a silver patina finish. H I S -AND-H ER BATHS The couple has luxurious separate bathrooms. His has an Umbria limestone floor, polished except in the shower, where it is honed to avoid slipping. Countertops are polished vein-cut travertine. In her bathroom, the polished white marble floor has a Carrera arabesque inset. Countertops are polished white calcite, and floor-to-ceiling white glass tiles line the shower walls. Elegant crystal-accented velvet covers the vanity chair. P OWDE R ROOM In the powder room, a wall cabinet is finished in high-

gloss taupe lacquer, and an onyx sink features a waterfall faucet. Handmade wallpaper is overlaid with fabric fibers and painted with a pewter satin finish. Art deco-inspired sconces have glass lenses and pewter accents. LOG G I A On the spacious loggia, a focal wall behind the builtin grill, as well as the countertops, are covered with slabs of polished calcite. A woven sectional with navy canvas cushions faces a wood-burning fireplace, while an aluminum table with a faux walnut top and pewtercolored aluminum chairs create a convenient spot for alfresco dining. In the cabana bath, whimsical wallpaper has an undersea theme, and the pale blue ceiling matches its background. An oval mirror framed in nautical-style rope hangs over an onyx sink. A T I M E LE SS RE T RE AT Just as her clients asked her to, Parisian created a dÊcor that is modern, yet with a timeless, lasting look. Perfect for entertaining, it’s also a private retreat and a place the owners are likely to want to spend a great deal of time in during years to come.

Guide to the Hamptons By Samantha Leal

T

he Hamptons, located on the South Fork of Long Island, are a respite for many New Yorkers in the summertime (and beyond). But each area has a distinct identity— perfect for when you’re deciding between a social vacation or a true escape from it all. So, where do you begin? We’ve got you covered.

But before you go, you should know that the Hamptons are extremely popular in the summer—if that wasn’t apparent. Many families and groups from the city have timeshares or summer rentals in homes spread across the area, so hotel lodging is sparse and can get expensive. Airbnbs can be your friend here, but only if booking with plenty of time before your visit or as a last-minute stay. (Oh, and make sure to check the address— some hosts will fudge the location a little to be in a more prime spot.) If you’re not looking for a prime-time beach getaway, you might think of going a little off-season in September, when the water is still warm but the crowds are much less. However, some restaurants and hotels are only seasonal, so double check before choosing when to book the trip.

Amagansett THE VIBE

Technically part of East Hampton, this hamlet has an even more laid-back vibe than its big sister and is located between the main part of East Hampton and Montauk. It’s the perfect midway point between the two—great for exploring both—and offers a scenic and quiet escape. WHERE TO STAY

Your best bet for staying in Amagansett is at hotels and inns throughout East Hampton, but Amagansett has a handful of resorts and B&Bs that can be booked well in advance of your stay. The Gansett Green Manor is beautiful and pristine but hosts a lot of weddings, so double-check your stay.

98

SUMMER 2019

WHERE TO EAT

Wölffer Kitchen Amagansett is the second eatery in the Hamptons from the team at Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack/Southampton. (Note: All Wölffer venues have a strict no big group or bachelor/bachelorette party policy.) It’s got a full wine list (obviously) and great eats for any time of the day, plus an outside patio and backyard lounge seating. La Fondita is a must for Mexican food, and you can’t miss the Hampton Chutney Co.—a true Amagansett establishment—with amazing dosas.

WHAT TO DO

The beaches: You have Indian Wells, which is a local favorite, and Atlantic Avenue Beach, which attracts pretty much everyone from the area. The Stephen Talkhouse is a great spot to watch live music in an old home and is a true East Hampton icon.

Bridgehampton (above) Elaia Estiatorio; (top right) Topping Rose House; (bottom left) Almond; (bottom right) Channing Daughters Winery

THE VIBE

Bridgehampton is quintessential Hamptons, mixing historic homes and upscale dining with casual eats and quaint beaches. You’ll get a taste of everything here, whether you’re looking for an easy summer getaway or something a little more luxe.

WHERE TO STAY

Topping Rose House is a luxury hotel featuring a restaurant by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. It’s picturesque, with 16 guest rooms and six suites, a pool and a spa. It’s within walking distance to

cafés, art galleries and more—plus, it features a Land Rover shuttle to take you to the beaches or other attractions nearby. WHERE TO EAT

We weren’t kidding about Topping Rose House’s restaurant, operated by Vongerichten (after taking over from Tom Colicchio in 2016). It’s a farm-totable restaurant with much of the produce grown on the premises. Almond is another local favorite, with locally sourced food and a menu that changes with the season. Bobby Van’s is always a solid choice for a great steak. Head to Elaia Estiatorio for a Greek feast that will leave you happy and full on hummus. Candy Kitchen is a mainstay, cash-only diner (nothing fancy here) that serves some of the best homemade ice cream. WHAT TO DO

The Polo Match & Cocktail Party is held in Bridgehampton, while the Hampton Classic Horse Show takes place here every August. A trip to Channing Daughters Winery is great for tasting some local wine. Lastly, and obviously, the beach calls.

WHAT TO DO

Check out the events happening at Guild Hall to catch a screening, exhibition, panel or reading. Make sure to stop by and walk the paint-splattered floor at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, a studio and gallery in the home Jackson Pollock shared in the ’50s with his wife, artist Lee Krasner. Ready for the beach? Main Beach is the closest to downtown East Hampton, about a 25-minute walk. (There’s also a free shuttle.) It’s one of the most popular beaches for exactly this reason.

Montauk (clockwise from top left) Scarpetta Beach; Ruschmeyers; The Surf Lodge; Crow’s Nest; Gurney’s Montauk (bottom) The Hideaway

THE VIBE

Montauk is located at the tip of the South Fork, or as many say, at “The End of the World.” In recent years, it has gone from a fisherman’s village to the place to see and be seen for young city-dwellers looking for a social escape. From day dance parties at The Surf Lodge to sunbathing at Gurney’s Montauk, it’s definitely a summer scene. WHERE TO STAY

There are many options in Montauk, depending on your agenda. The Surf Lodge is an option for those who want to be a part of the action, while Gurney’s Montauk is the only year-round resort in the area. Gurney’s also has a new property that just opened, Gurney’s Star Island Resort and Marina, which takes over the Montauk Yacht Club Resort and Marina. After a $13 million renovation in just a year, the resort has a more laid-back vibe than the original Gurney’s Montauk. There’s also Ruschmeyers, another place where the environment changes at night, but it’s basically a camp for adults— with adorable cabins, a teepee, an outdoor bar and picnic tables.

gulfstreammediagroup.com

WHERE TO EAT

There are so many places to eat in Montauk, it’s hard to narrow it down. The waterfront Crow’s Nest is a rustic-chic restaurant (and hotel!) that will not disappoint. Gurney’s Star Island Resort and Marina offers three new restaurants for the area helmed by executive chef Jeremy Blutstein, a James Beard-award nominated chef who most recently ran Almond in Bridgehampton. Il Forno has pizzas and Italian fare, while The Pool Club features (you guessed it) traditional summertime fare, including sriracha lobster rolls and fish tacos. Showfish is the seafood restaurant that has everyone talking. The OG Gurney’s features Scarpetta Beach, the sister restaurant of the iconic Manhattan eatery. For Mexican fare, head to The Hideaway, a local favorite that’s not touristy at all. John’s Drive-In is a must for ice cream. Just go. WHAT TO DO

You have to see the Montauk Lighthouse, which was completed in 1796 and is the oldest lighthouse in New York state. Climb the 137 steps to the top to see Block Island Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. Grab a beer at Montauk Brewing Company, and stroll downtown to check out art fairs and little shops before heading to the beach. Go to Surf Lodge for a scene, including the annual summer concert series.

Sag Harbor THE VIBE

Sag Harbor is an idyllic village with an iconic windmill and old-school appeal. It feels like a year-round village where people actually live, and they do—giving it more of a homey feel than some of the other villages and hamlets. It’s located on Gardiner’s Bay and has a rich whaling history. WHERE TO STAY

The American Hotel has been a constant on Main Street since the ’70s, though the structure dates back to the 1800s. You can’t miss the brick building, and its charm is a nod to the village overall.

The restaurant at The American Hotel is top-notch, while the original Tutto il Giorno is also a prime pick. Page at 63 Main features locally sourced American dishes, and Lulu Kitchen & Bar is a fixture on Main Street for good reason. Start your day with a doughnut and coffee from Grindstone Coffee & Donuts, founded by Kyle Shanahan whose stepfather is chef Michael Symon. (Just make sure you get there early—they sell out fast.) Then later grab a burger and a milkshake at LT Burger. The Beacon is another amazing spot, perfect for a more upscale dinner—and great sunset views.

WHAT TO DO

A trip to the iconic windmill is a given, located at the foot of Main Street near the Long Wharf. Learn all about the history of the town and its connection to whaling at the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum. Across the street you can check out the Custom House, a museum that focuses on the early history of the United States. Lastly, see a play, comedy show or performance at the Bay Street Theater & Sag Harbor Center for the Arts.

Southampton THE VIBE

Southampton is the village of affluence. It’s a mecca of shopping and celebrity, and it has an old-money vibe that translates to grand mansions, immaculately manicured lawns and unspoiled beaches. Here you’ll find antique shopping, polo matches and more. Make sure to check out Main Street for shopping and restaurants, while Gin Lane features some of the aforementioned mansions. WHERE TO STAY

Southampton Inn is a great pick, located in the heart of the village and in walking distance (literally steps) to Main Street. It has 90 guest rooms, a pool, tennis court, and yes, you can bring your pets. Looking to re-center yourself? Shou Sugi Ban House just opened in the hamlet of Water Mill, part of Southampton, and is a wellness program, spa and retreat made up of 13 rooms located on 3 acres. WHERE TO EAT

75 Main is a mainstay (pun fully intended), for Italian fare since 2010. Tutto il Giorno is a chic, Italian restaurant (not surprising—it’s Gabby Karan de Felice’s spot, daughter of Donna Karan) with a patio that becomes a social haven for Southampton-stayers. (The original and other location is in Sag Harbor.) WHAT TO DO

Attend a polo match at the Southampton Hunt & Polo Club, or peruse the boutiques on Main Street. Head to Water Mill and check out the Parrish Art Museum, which focuses on works from the artist colony of the South Shore and North Shore. Right next to the museum is the South Fork location of Duck Walk Vineyards, where you can taste wines among 30 acres of grape vines.

1

Most people are afraid of public speaking, but for me, I’m terrified of:

missing out! FOMO (fear of missing out) is a real thing. I am so blessed to have such an amazing family and circle of girlfriends. I hate the thought of missing out on making memories with the people I love most, especially now that I am a first-time aunt. I want to be there for everything.

2

If I hadn’t become a TV journalist, I probably would have: become a lawyer.

I am so fascinated by the criminal justice system, and according to my family, I’m terrible to argue with. I can’t lose.

3

Of all the stories I’ve ever covered, the most difficult day on the job for me was: the Parkland school shooting. I am

very much aware that while it was difficult for me, my sadness is only a tiny sliver of the pain the victims’ families feel every day. I think the most gut-wrenching day was when the victims’ names were released and we started to learn about their interests, hobbies, plans

for the future, and seeing so many pictures of them loving life. They were all so special and had everything to look forward to. I think of them often.

4

From the election to his regular visits to Mar-a-Lago, covering President Trump has been: historic. From the

very beginning with the campaign rallies, to President Trump hosting world leaders at Mara-Lago, and every tweet in between. It’s exciting to have national and international stories essentially unfolding right in our backyard.

5

At the end of the day, I’m just hoping viewers realize that: we are human

too. Social media has made it very easy to connect with the community, which is amazing, but there will always be someone telling you you’re too fat, too skinny, too much makeup, not enough makeup, hate the dress, hate you. The list goes on. It does hurt, and it has the power to ruin a day. You never know who is just one mean comment from being pushed overboard. So, be kind or be quiet.

The Empire: 2 ounces grapefruit vodka 1 ounce lemongrass cinnamon syrup 1 ounce lemon juice 1 sprig of basil Cinnamon Soda water Muddle one basil sprig with house-made lemongrass cinnamon syrup. Add the lemon juice and grapefruit vodka. Shake hard on ice, strain, and top with soda, lemon wheel and torched rosemary. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

After successful stints in the roles of reporter, multimedia journalist, producer and morning news anchor in southwest Georgia, Tallahassee, and central Pennsylvania, Kara Duffy arrived in West Palm Beach in 2016 after joining the news team at WPEC-CBS 12. A Baltimore native and Towson University graduate, Duffy won a prestigious Associated Press (AP) award in April 2019 for her coverage of the “March For Our Lives” rally in Washington, D.C., following the tragic Parkland school shootings. A voracious reader who has curated “a pretty impressive library at home,” Duffy regularly consumes a book each week. She enjoys spending time with family and her tight circle of friends, as well as weekday matinees at the movies as, in her words, “a perk of working the early a.m. shift.” Duffy can be seen weekdays during the CBS 12 local morning news broadcasts at 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m., 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and noon. She resides in West Palm Beach.

SUMMER 2019

his is being written during D-Day anniversary week. Media attention has been focused on France and the WWII Normandy invasion, popularly known as D-Day. A major difference between press coverage in WWII and today’s limited engagements is that casualties in recent combat have been far lighter than in wars past. Accordingly, the death of a single soldier often gets considerable coverage. Recently CBS’s “60 Minutes” repeated a segment originally broadcast several years ago about the deaths of five soldiers in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan. It featured several men on the unlucky team who knew immediately that our own aircraft had killed their comrades. Assigning blame was tricky. CBS even brought in a general to comment. There was no doubt that it was a tragic case of friendly fire. Nobody could cover that up. It struck me as a startling contrast to a WWII likely friendly fire death in the skies above Iwo Jima. My cousin, Lt. JG Thomas McCormick died when something struck his small spotter plane flying off the Battleship Tennessee on the morning the Marines landed to begin one of the bloodiest fights of the war. For years that’s all the family knew. A great looking guy was missing, then pronounced dead. There was much more to the story, but that took 60 years to learn. We had contacted Paul Dawson who runs the USS Tennessee Museum in Huntsville, Tennessee. We were amazed to learn he knew of my cousin. His father had been the ship’s photographer and had photos of the handful of pilots who flew its small float plane, the OSU-2 Kingfisher. He 128

had photos of Tommy we never saw. He also discovered, a year later, a document we never knew existed. It was an “after battle” report, marked confidential, and not likely seen by human eyes for long after the 1945 battle. It included this shock: “It is possible that the loss of the TENNESSEE spotting plane, on D-Day, may have been caused by a ship firing from Fire Support Sector 6 at extremely long range.” The report went on to recommend our aircraft be careful to stay above the trajectory of the big shells. It suggests the Navy knew right away that a large shell had knocked Tommy’s plane apart without exploding. ***

here was much publicity about the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Celebrities, such as Tom Brokaw, have been inspired to return (after writing a best seller, “The Greatest Generation” based on our soldiers’ heroics in that historic

event). Over and over we heard that the sacrifices of the invasion forces, including French resistance fighters, must never be forgotten. One wonders about that. At the same time as all the D-Day anniversary pomp and pageantry, stories appeared about the drastic decline of visitors to hallowed Civil War sites. The Wall Street Journal reported that five major Civil War battlefields drew 3.1 million visitors last year—down from 10.2 million in 1970. That is a disturbing sign, especially for places such as Adams County, Pennsylvania, whose economy benefits from tourism associated with the Gettysburg campaign. They used to joke that there were more re-enactors roaming around Gettysburg on weekends than there were men in the actual battle. No more. One explanation for the decline in Civil War interest is the recent trend toward revising that history. It used to be settled history that the South seceded to form a new country, and the overwhelming numbers of their populations considered their first loyalty to their states, not a loosely constructed federal government. But recently, perversions of that history have depicted them all as racists and traitors. Thus the movement to take down Confederate monuments and portray admirable men, such as Robert E. Lee, as evil. As The Federalist put it: “If history is just another tool in the pursuit of political power, there’s not much of an impetus to get it right.” If something as monumental as the Civil War can be forgotten, what chance does Normandy have 100 years from now? gulfstreammediagroup.com
