Old Fashioned Influence
T
he term “influencer marketing” wasn’t around when I graduated from the University of Florida in 1990. Of course, inventions like the “internet” and “social media” weren’t either. The “network of networks” came soon after I graduated with my marketing degree, and of course, the rest is a high-speed technological train that changed the world as we know it. We can now obtain our news, entertainment and trending pop culture through a myriad of multimedia platforms. Long before hashtags, tweets, followers, profiles, posts, streams, blogs and Snapchats were around, print media and magazines were the original influencers of taste, style, home décor, body ideals and purchasing decisions. Thankfully, city regional magazines still serve an important purpose, and studies show this ole “O.G.” will be influencing decisions long after the next invention has come and gone. Anyone can be an “influencer” these days and promotional lines are often blurred online, so we’ve gone old-school and featured real-life people, who can actually be seen in our real-life communities, who have had real influences on our physical world. Designs are usually brainstormed a day in advance, and nail art appointments average an hour and fifteen minutes, but may take longer if extra detail is required. BG: Remove gels safely by lightly buffing off the top, shiny layer of topcoat. Dip a cotton pad in pure acetone and wrap nails in foils, then soak for 7 to 10 minutes. When the gel lifts, use a cuticle pusher or a wood stick to push it off the nail then wash your hands in warm, soapy water.
MR: Make sure nail polish is dry before starting any art. You don’t need fancy tools—Amazon has great brushes for a great price. Practice, practice, practice, and don’t get discouraged. Each time you mess up, it’s a lesson in itself. tep over the threshold of Casa Gusto and enter an enchanting world of antiques, artworks and found objects, an elegantly designed interior with an assemblage of items that caught the discerning eyes of co-proprietors Cris Briger and Charles Peed. Together, the mother-son duo behind the interior design and antique firm brings together global goods as varied as Mexican Talavera pottery, paintings by Catharine Warren and 17th century furniture. Their West Palm Beach boutique is layered with one-of-a-kind curios and aesthetically pleasing pieces gathered from around the world that are both decorative and useful. Shoppers can stop by to “get the gusto” and browse items only available from Casa Gusto to create a living space that reflects the personality of its inhabitants. Old and new, items at Casa Gusto run the gamut from vintage fabric cushions to handmolded French ceramics to an assortment of beaded corals, tole flowers and Spanish lebrillo, as well as an extensive line of decorative papier-mâché; no item is in the store unless Briger would want to repurchase it for herself. “Casa Gusto came about from a combined effort to bring

what we really like to do [to the] public,” Peed explains. “We love hunting, inventing and telling ‘the story.’” Casa Gusto is best known for its curated look that’s not for everyone, but reflects a definite style, he says. The boutique recently celebrated one full year in business since opening its doors in November 2018. Landing in West Palm Beach wasn’t on purpose, but Briger and Peed are enjoying the warehouse aspect of Georgia Avenue as well as the interest they’ve received from the local community. Farming for the future Farm managers Tripp and Carmen Eldridge oversee Wellington’s Arden, the only community of its kind in South Florida where residents enjoy a five-acre farm brimming with freshly grown produce. By Clarissa Buch Photography by Kenrick Mills
A
few years ago, Tripp and Carmen Eldridge almost set out to bike the world for a year. But before they could leave, Carmen says they “came across the position of a lifetime. “A place called Arden was looking for a full-time farm manager,” she says. “Tripp and I decided to both apply.” Soon after, the Eldridges were called for an interview at Arden, a sustainable living community in western Palm Beach County, where residents volunteer weekly and participate in farming activities as well as enjoy the benefits of farm-to-table meals. Nicknamed an “agrihood,” it’s the only master-planned community of its kind in South Florida and among the first in the state. Residents of Arden enjoy an event barn and five-acre farm brimming with tropical fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. “As beginning farmers, it’s very expensive to acquire land,” Carmen says. “An opportunity for young people to get into farming, grow vegetables and make a living wage is almost unheard of. Tripp and I are passionate about food justice and providing access to healthy and affordable foods, and a place like Arden brings that all together.” Carmen is no stranger to farming. Her grandparents were farmers in Spain, she taught organic farming at a high school in Panama through the Peace Corps and launched a oneacre teaching farm program at the University of North Florida which grows food for the school’s cafeteria. “After North Florida, I went into the nonprofit world as program director for Florida Certified Organic Growers and Consumers Inc.,” Carmen says. “I was focused on equitable

food access for low-income families. That’s also around the same time when Tripp and I met, fell in love and ultimately, moved to Tennessee to farm together in east Nashville.” Originally from Georgia, Tripp discovered farming in his later days of college. He was a sustainable agriculture volunteer in Peace Corps Tanzania and studied farms and food systems in graduate school in places from Mexico to Spain. More recently, he managed similar community-supported agricultural farms throughout Georgia and Tennessee and served as the farm director for the 400-acre Caney Fork Farms. “Farming started as a hobby and a passion, but ultimately grew into my life,” Tripp says. “Once my time in Tennessee was over, Carmen and I decided we wanted to escape winter, but we knew ultimately we wanted to
find a way to continue farming.” Since March 2018, Tripp and Carmen have managed Arden’s community farm, which provides a portion to more than 200 homeowners. When completed, more than 2,000 homes will be provided with crops from the farm. Residents not only share in the harvest of fruits, vegetables and herbs grown November through May, but also take advantage of the variety of “Made in Florida” local products, including coffee, honey, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, all of which are hand-picked by the Eldridges. “This is home now,” Tripp says. “We’ve planted lots of small trees around the farm, and we hope to watch them bear fruit. We have a lot of sweat equity invested in seeing the farm fully come to life as Carmen and I have envisioned it. It’s truly exciting.”

s anyone who’s ever been to twilight yoga at the Jupiter Lighthouse will tell you, the class is—at the risk of sounding too sentimental—lifechanging. From the meandering walk through the lighthouse gardens to the behemoth of a banyan tree under which dozens of people practice, to the Insta-worthy sunsets and symphony of crickets, each moment of the class is magical. Nature aside, that magic is all thanks to Mary Veal, a Jupiter resident and nationally certified yoga instructor specializing in vinyasa, yoga nidra and yoga for arthritis. Veal, who has been teaching yoga classes for more than 10 years, began leading twilight yoga in 2013 at the request of friend and Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum president and CEO Jamie Stuve. Today, the class has a cult following and a long line of yogis waiting to lay down their mats every Monday evening (the class begins at 6 p.m. November through March and 7 p.m. April through October). “It just took off because it’s such a beautiful space; it’s meant for yoga,” Veal says of the yoga deck, which can accommodate up to 140 people. “Being in nature, even if it’s just for an hour—feeling the vibes of the environment, the weather, the animals, whatever’s happening— it’s important for our nervous system.” Veal’s practice began in a far less glamorous fashion more than 20 years ago when she saw an ad for a free class on a roadside billboard. Having suffered from arthritis and similar ailments since childhood, she decided to give it a try. “I said, ‘OK, I have nothing to lose.’ After just one class, I was like, ‘Wow, my body did what I told it to do,’” she recalls. “I started going every week, and about six months into it, I did 10 minutes of yoga on my own. I’ve been doing it every day since then.” 32

Several years and yoga certifications later, Veal left a long career at Comcast, and in 2018, opened Green Tara Yoga in Jupiter. The studio offers classes ranging from rock ‘n’ roll yoga to chair yoga, which Veal says is great for people struggling with arthritis (she is now the only certified yoga for arthritis instructor in the state), healing after surgery, or living with other chronic conditions or pain. All classes (including twilight yoga at the lighthouse) are taught by several different instructors, many of whom Veal has led in their 200-hour certification. “I try to offer classes with a wide variety of teachers and a wide variety of styles. There’s no hot yoga, there are no mirrors, there’s no competition. It’s just try whatever speaks to you until you find something you like,” she says.
Yoga classes aside, Veal also hosts an annual yoga retreat in Sebastian—the next one is in January—and several international yoga retreats to places like Africa, Peru and Iceland. To date, Veal recalls India as her most memorable retreat, not only as the birthplace of yoga, but as a reminder that the practice of yoga brings people together—whether lying underneath a banyan tree at sunset or kneeling on a floor across the globe. “When you start doing yoga and you start seeing that inner peace inside yourself, you see it everywhere. There are no strangers anywhere in the world,” Veal says. “What’s important is to appreciate the cultural differences, but to see the sameness—that love, that compassion and that joy—in everyone.”

Even when markets become volatile, you can keep your retirement plan on track by staying focused and taking the time to rebalance and refresh your investments. The past eight years have been a heady time for the Dow, but recent large single-day drops have focused attention on how to protect your future if you’re planning to retire sometime soon. After a long bull market, portfolios that might have been well-balanced may now be overweight in stocks and may require reallocation toward lower-risk investments. Picture the future. If you’re concerned about market volatility, take the time to think carefully about your retirement and ask the big questions. How much will you need to retire? mericans for the Arts, a national organization that brings together those who support and sustain all things culturally, estimates its industry generates a seven-to-one return on investment. In that case, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre—led by Producing Artistic Director and Chief Executive Andrew Kato—funnels an approximate $56 million into community coffers every year. “People don’t understand that theater is a business and that there are great advantages to having the No. 1 regional theater in the lower United States in their own backyard,” he says, referring to a ranking by the League of Resident Theatres. “It is truly an investment in our community by supporting our growth.”

The theater is in the midst of a massive renovation project that will increase the size of the stage to make it Broadwaycompatible. “Pre-Broadway shows—they all start at a regional theater somewhere, including ‘Hamilton’,” Kato says. The Believe Campaign needs to raise $7 million this season to complete this construction phase, “but getting the building finished is not the end result; it’s the start,” he says. The 55-year-old has been at the helm of the beloved facility since 2004; in that time, he has quintupled its staff. “We’re definitely an economic driver,” Kato says. “Area restaurants— when we’re full, they’re full.”

Mo Foster and Sally Sevareid, who wake up South Florida each day on “The Mo & Sally Morning Show,” have been at it for so long—26 years, 16 of those on KOOL 1055—listeners feel as if they personally know the husband-and-wife team. “They know about our cats, that I like to cook, that we drink wine—so I get that a lot,” Sevareid says. “That’s exactly it—we’re an open book, so they know pretty much everything,” Foster adds. The royals of radio rule the airwaves from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., dishing on everything from news oddities and viral videos to talking about the everyday humor in people’s lives. “We prepare with our life,” Foster, 54, says. “We make a lot of notes just about what we encounter on a daily basis.” “We’ve become professional observers,” Sevareid, 56, says. “It’s a lot of fun.” They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in November. “She’s my best friend, and she doesn’t annoy me,” Foster laughs. “I’m not going to say the same,” Sevareid laughs back. As chairman of the performing arts venue in West Palm Beach, Jeffrey Stoops produces the agendas, directs the meetings and reviews all projects and tasks with the CEO. This season, he will oversee the wrap of a renovation project and the Kravis 2020 campaign. “I am extremely fortunate to chair one of Palm Beach County’s cultural jewels and best-run not-for-profit organizations,” he says. “While I am certain that the Kravis Center is recognized today for the great programming it brings to our com-

munity, particularly to our children, and for the use of its facilities by many other organizations, we can always build upon that success.” In addition to serving on the boards of Children’s Healthcare Charity, the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties and Seminole Boosters, Inc. and managing the Stoops Family Foundation, the 61-year-old Delray Beach resident is the CEO at SBA Communications Corporation and is in charge of business initiatives, investor relations and risk assessments. “We are the seventh-largest public company in the state of Florida by market capitalization, we are an S&P 500 company and we do business in 14 countries,” Stoops says. “I stay pretty busy.”

is presence on the Jupiter campus of Scripps Research is paving the way for biological breakthroughs. As the institute’s executive vice president of Florida operations, Douglas Bingham stands behind its study of basic and applied, curiosity-driven biomedical research, in addition to other major pressing health concerns. “I’m more of an enabler than an influencer,” he says. “I enable scientists to be all they can be.” Bingham recently facilitated a $5 million commitment to buy a cryoelectron microscope, which enables the visualization of biological molecules like antibodies, proteins and viruses, and in 2020 will kick off a $15 million campaign to build a Molecular Imaging Center using the technology. “Science, at the end of the day, is a very robust marketplace, and you have to compete in the marketplace for resources,” Bingham says. “One of my jobs is to get out there and sell what we do and get support for it.” When he is not helping his team of scientists test and prove their ideas and theories, he either is riding his bicycle around town, hanging out by the beach or dining at a waterfront restaurant. “North Palm Beach County has a real nice laid-back vibe to it,” the 66-year-old Juno Beach resident says. “I’ve always liked Florida.”

e considers himself “a chamber person deep down inside”—probably because he has been involved with the organization for nearly 18 years. “There’s something special about a chamber of commerce, especially our chamber of commerce,” says Noel Martinez, president and CEO of Palm Beach North. “It’s part of who I am.” The Hialeah native moved to the area to open Bonefish Grill in the Shoppes of Oakbrook. Once there, he joined the Chamber. As a member, he volunteered at the ArtiGras Fine Arts Festival, created the Small Business Advisory Council’s inaugural expo and eventually joined the staff as director of membership development. He left

the chamber in 2014 for other pursuits, including executive stints at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County and Leadership Palm Beach County. His return was inevitable. “When this opportunity presented itself, I went after it,” the 42-year-old Jupiter resident says. “For me, it was just the next step in my career.” His goal is to carry out the non-profit’s mission of supporting local businesses and championing sustainable growth. “A chamber of commerce brings people together,” Martinez says. “It brings people the ability to collaborate. And we all know you can do more things together than you can do alone.”

H
e is the eyes and ears of West Palm Beach’s core community—an area that encompasses buildings, businesses and bustle between the Royal Park Bridge and the Flagler Memorial Bridge from the Intracoastal Waterway to Australian Avenue. As executive director of the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority, Raphael Clemente has the nuts-and-bolts job of keeping the public realm landscaped, litter-free and looking good. “A lot of what we do as an organization is to focus on the basics,” Clemente says. “Is it safe? Is it clean? Is it well-lit? We always try to stay on top of all of those details that make the place appealing and attractive.” The goal of the special taxing district is to promote the vibrancy of the city and create cultural, economic and social programs that engage and entice residents and visitors. The more than two dozen downtown murals were painted by local artists and by national and international artists in partnership with the CANVAS Outdoor Museum Show. “When I think of my job, I think of it in terms of, ‘Can I attract another business?’” the 51-year-old urban planner says. “But I think also of, ‘Can I attract people?’ It all comes down to what we can do to make everyone’s lives better.”

To create an open floor plan her clients use as a central hub for entertaining and hosting casual family meals, walls were removed and plumbing relocated. Recurring marble elements—including the backsplash, countertops and the expanse beneath the custom range hood—create visual continuity and draw the eye west to the palm-edged patio and water beyond. To honor the Jazz Age beginnings of this West Palm Beach home, Tracy Dunn of Tracy Dunn Design let antique store finds and fabric-refreshed vintage furnishings steal the spotlight. Aquatic blues and juicy greens, a zesty color schematic familiar to South Florida, anchor the space and provide fascinating contrast with the original hardwood floors. Side chairs from DAFA Antiques and the wing chairs, once owned by the client’s grandparents, bookend the fireplace and were reupholstered in punchy floral and ikat fabrics from Quadrille in Dania Beach. To coax the eye around the room, Chinese porcelains were perched atop the fireplace mantel, built-in bookshelves were added, in addition to the 1920s demilune table that stands sentry behind the sofa. Artwork, like the vintage beach painting on the southern wall, was kept to a minimum, while contemporary appurtenances, like the faux turtle shells hanging above the French doors, offer daily reminders of where the owners live and play; tracydunndesign.com

ack for its 13th year of drawing world-class chefs together for a weekend of socializing and showing off, the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival will descend upon the Palm Beach County scene Dec. 12 to 15, with more events in Palm Beach than ever before. While this year’s festival will feature many repeat favorites and returning chefs, six new events will spice things up with a wide variety of foodie fêtes and culinary experiences, from barbecue and bourbon to Indian spices. The festival kicks off Thursday evening with four different five-course dinners at restaurants such as PB Catch, Buccan and Avocado Grill’s Palm Beach Gardens location. However, the buzzed-about highlight of the Thursday-night festivities is an utterly new event: the Beef N Bourbon Ex-

perience, hosted at Okeechobee Steakhouse by widely televised chef Adam Richman, and Dan McKee, master distiller at Michter’s. Richman, a recognized Travel Channel personality, will walk diners through five hearty courses—including meats treated to the Lewis family’s three-generational top-secret beef-aging process, an Okeechobee Steakhouse signature— plus expertly matched rare bourbon pairings. Friday sees the advent of two new events: SPICE, an Indian luncheon, and A Dinner at Florie’s, held at The Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach. Hosted by chef Julien Gremaud

ou may have only seen him on your TV screen, but at the Beef N Bourbon Experience, chef Adam Richman will be calling on all five of your senses—especially taste. Best known for his role in “Man v. Food,” he knows a thing or two about fine flavors. Below, Richman foretells the delectable agenda guests can expect during a night spent sampling quality beef and rare bourbons.
What’s in store for guests at the Beef N Bourbon Experience? At this event, we’ll pair the best cuts of meats with high-grade bourbons. One of my favorite bourbons, and quite possibly the only rye I like, is made by Michter’s and their master distiller, Dan McKee. Dan will also be on hand with me to unveil a special release, which has not yet even been made public. Tell us about some of the courses guests can look forward to. I don’t want to give too much away in advance, but Okeechobee Steakhouse is the oldest steakhouse in Florida, operated by third-generation owner Ralph Lewis. Their beef program, featuring only prime beef, is unparalleled. Different cuts of meat, depending upon marbling, proximity to bone and the length of time they are aged—and even whether they are wet- or dry-aged—can drastically alter the flavor, creating quite a bit of nuance and texture in each cut. bourbon will slowly ramp up in intensity. What’s so special about the pairing of beef and bourbon? Bourbon is not something we often see paired with different courses of meals. Bourbon is often seen as something to be enjoyed on its own, but the corn content of bourbon—coupled with its notes of caramel, spice, smoke, vanilla, oak, grass, cinnamon and even cloves—lends itself to pairing with rich and earthy red meat. What’s a fun food fact you’d like to share relevant to PBF&WF? My first real exposure to cooking with and understanding the flavor applications of the spice sumac happened at the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival years ago, courtesy of chefs Marc Murphy and Robert Irvine. Robert had thrown it in as a secret ingredient in the cooking competition, and being able to sit with them and the good people of Creekstone Farms and learn how it can be applied to red meat and in other recipes—from both a legendary meat purveyor and two of the best chefs to ever do it—was incredible. I learned so much that during a recent trip to Israel, where that spice is super prevalent, they were impressed that I knew so much about it and asked where I learned so much about a spice that influences the Middle Eastern menu. My response: “The Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival!”

(of course) guacamole, it also blends in the rich warmth of Indian cuisine. “I always try to incorporate some Indian flavors to our menus and specials,” he shares. “I have many very close Indian friends, and I learn techniques from them, cooking in their homes. Indian spices add a delicious element to a variety of dishes. We have a popular curried cauliflower on our menu— it’s also vegan!—and I put my spin on it by adding coconut.”

n a quiet downtown neighborhood, Fern Street Wine Bar & Kitchen brings a unique concept while raising the bar. The menu showcases clean, non-GMO ingredients with no antibiotics or nitrates. “All of our proteins are carefully researched to ensure the purest product,” says managing partner Nick Scalis. “Long story short, our focus is on ingredients.” Born into the food industry, Scalis told his parents at age 15 he would someday own a restaurant. Fern Street is a project he wanted to execute for a long time, and along with partner Chris Muneio, he’s living his dream. With front row seats to the open kitchen, begin your culinary journey in the hands of executive chef Chris Healey. Along with a glass of Sancerre, enjoy a vi-
sually stunning charcuterie board, filled with a distinctive variety of cheeses, meats, olives, fruits, mustard and jams. An imported Italian oven is used for all of the hot dishes, cooked on cast iron skillets in the scratch kitchen, including the seared scallops served with bok choy slaw and hummus, as well as house-smoked pork belly

A perfect crust on the wild mushroom pizza is layered with mushrooms, caramelized onions, fresh greens, creamy buffalo mozzarella, black truffle salt and garlic puree, and bursts with flavor. For larger plates, there’s the Fern Street mac and cheese, which blends mozzarella, fontina, 26-month gouda, wild mushrooms, broccolini, asparagus and heirloom grape tomatoes. The tender 8-ounce filet mignon is served over enoki mushroom noodles with a white wine pan sauce. For something lighter, ask for the roasted vegetable platter, a masterpiece of seasonal vegetables, including broccolini, fingerling potatoes, rainbow carrots, cauliflower, wild mushrooms, onions and asparagus on a bed of hummus. We recommend ordering the s’mores with Ecuadworian chocolate covered in toasted marshmallows and graham crackers for dipping. Becoming the first American ever to win the Olympic gold medal in judo at the 2012 games in London was: truly surreal. To go to
the Olympics is a dream come true. You’re in the .000001-percent of the population. To represent my country on the greatest stage in the world and win a gold medal is literally what I have dreamt of since I was a child.

Winning a second Olympic gold medal four years later in Rio was different because: this time it was for me. In London, I felt like
I owed it to everyone who was a part of my journey. Every doctor, every training partner, my coaches, my family, every [sexual abuse] survivor. But in Rio, I wanted to prove to myself that it wasn’t a fluke, that I truly am one of one. I’m special, and I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to.

Something that most people don’t know about my former training partner, team-
mate and roommate Ronda Rousey is: she
is a very giving person. When I was 16 and dead broke, she would pay for my groceries, or take me for fancy dinners. She stood up for me in an online forum when people were trying to victim-shame me. She’s tough, but she’s also kind.

The reason why I decided to start my Fearless Foundation, and to release my book “Fighting Back” is because: I want to
leave the world better than I found it. There’s lots of education on stranger-danger and cyberbullying, but there are no educational tools to help us talk to our youth about what they should do if someone close to them tries to take advantage of them. “Fighting Back” is that tool. Its an in-depth look using my journal entries and my own story of what sexual abuse is, and how we can prevent it. I have been given an amazing opportunity and platform to help make a difference in the world. It would be a sin for me not to.
An Ohio native, Kayla Harrison began her illustrious career in judo at the age of six. Beyond making history by winning Olympic gold medals for Team USA at both the 2012 and 2016 games, Harrison is also a two-time gold medalist at the Pan American Games, as well as a gold and two-time bronze medalist at the World Judo Championships. After signing with the The Professional Fighters League (PFL), Harrison made her MMA debut in June 2018, and at the time of publication, has amassed a perfect 6-0 record. Arguably the face and biggest star of the PFL, Harrison recently resigned her contract to remain with the league, whose television rights were acquired by ESPN in 2019. Harrison is scheduled to fight next for the PFL $1,000,000 championship prize on New Year’s Eve at famed Madison Square Garden. A survivor and activist, Harrison launched the “Fearless Foundation” with the mission “to shine a light on the darkness that is child sexual abuse and to enrich the lives of survivors through education and sport, leading survivors to mastery and enabling them to flourish in all aspects of life.” An avid reader and lover of dogs and the beach, Harrison currently resides in Coconut Creek. 116

he same page in a recent issue of the Palm Beach Post reported on the two greatest threats to the area’s peace and tranquility—the high-speed Virgin Trains, aka Brightline, and the high appetite giant pythons. Both problems have been caused by human action, or inaction. The pythons are a threat because almost 100,000 were imported to this country over 10 years, and some were illegally released in the Everglades where they have thrived in increasingly large numbers. This was reported by Frank Cerabino, the Post’s entertaining columnist. The train problem is a result of various government agencies permitting so many grade crossings on the FEC Railway corridor, never anticipating those tracks might host fast passenger trains. On the same page as Cerabino’s column, the paper reported on a meeting in Jupiter in which citizens objected to the high-speed train on safety and other grounds. First the snakes. Cerabino wrote that they worry him more than climate change. They have already destroyed much of the native wildlife in the Glades. They even duel with alligators, but not always with success. Cerabino noted the pythons are good swimmers. They have been found in Biscayne Bay, well inland from the Everglades. What if, in their quest for food, the snakes start swimming through canals into civilized territory? It is a scary thought that owners of waterfront property might find a huge snake lounging on their back porches or lurking inside boats. They could be a threat to pets or children. On the other

hand, the snakes like to sun on roads, and some might make the mistake of lounging on railroad tracks and not moving fast enough when a Brightline train roars by.

nakes were not part of the conversation when residents objected to the expansion of Brightline through Jupiter en route to Orlando. Construction commotion and safety were, however. Nobody can argue that trains going 79 miles per hour or faster are not a concern in areas where the tracks are on the same grade as auto traffic. The FEC gave up its long-distance trains in the 1960s, and little thought was given to the possibility that the same tracks might again be used for passenger trains. The railroad is positioned to serve a booming South Florida population. Indeed, much of that population lives in communities developed along the railroad before major roads came through. Much of the Treasure Coast growth came after the FEC ceased passenger service and numerous grade crossings were built to accommodate the new residents. There are only a few places where roads bridge the tracks.
This rail corridor is not like the northeast where the high-speed Acela train runs on tracks that either are recessed or elevated at road intersections. That railroad was rebuilt for safety many years ago, about the time cars replaced horse drawn buggies. So were the numerous commuter railroads serving the major cities. It is too late to say Florida might have had the foresight to follow that example. It is not too late, however, to consider a partial rebuild of the FEC tracks, closing some grade crossings or bridging major intersections. This was done on the CSX tracks when Interstate 95 was built. More recently, the New River in Fort Lauderdale has a span rising high over the water. It is used by Tri-Rail trains capable of easily making the climb, while the slow and less agile freight traffic continues to use the old drawbridge. It greatly reduces the number of bridge openings that interfere with boat traffic. There are crossings on the FEC tracks where elevating Brightline might be the cheapest way to go. There are also several sections along the FEC where closing a crossing would open up stretches of track where trains could safely hit high speeds. The fact is Brightline is here to stay and opposition from residents of Jupiter and other Treasure Coast communities would disappear if a few stations (and this is planned) are added along the 135 miles from West Palm to Cocoa Beach. The new service gets rave reviews from those who ride the current route from West Palm to Miami. Nothing promotes acceptance of this fast train like riding it. gulfstreammediagroup.com
