THE

TEAM

behind

W A T E R F R O N T

THE

AGENT

P R O P E R T I E S

When your real estate agent won’t invite you to meet their marketing team, there likely isn’t one. When you visit Waterfront Properties corporate office it will be obvious that Waterfront is as much a marketing firm with expert knowledge and a budget to focus on a sale of your property as it is a real estate brokerage.

The Waterfront Advantage

Email Marketing Team

The last word that could ever be used to describe Waterfront Properties is ordinary. At Waterfront’s marketing headquarters, a diligent and enthusiastic staff works handin-hand with real estate agents. Together, they collaborate to expertly market their sellers’ properties and reach buyers all over the world. Don’t assume this is the norm in every real estate office.

Through use of email marketing, Waterfront is able to communicate directly with thousands of potential buyers looking for properties similar to your home’s location and price range. Waterfront’s agents often know about properties before they are on the market which allows buyers to hear about them before they appear in MLS.

David Abernathy, Business Manager at Waterfront, says “my colleagues at other brokerages are envious of Waterfront’s 20+ person marketing team because we don’t need to outsource key marketing projects.” The company’s dedicated marketing budget provides the marketing team with the most up-to-date marketing technology, equipment and strategies. How? Here is a glimpse behind the scenes…

Photo Expertise/ Graphic Design Team In the digital arena, Waterfront’s in-house photographers, graphic designers and photo editors are highly trained and work with agents to understand home features that buyers are looking for. Then the team is able to highlight the best features of sellers’ properties in all marketing materials. Using specific, proven strategies, they’re able to captivate buyers’ interest with photos and designs that make an impact.

Internet/SEO/Social Media Team In today’s world of digital giants like Amazon and Facebook, Waterfront knows the importance of web dominance. With a dedicated team focusing on the Internet and digital marketing, Waterfront’s websites consistently appear at the top of Google. Their sellers’ properties are promoted on thousands of local, national and international real estate websites and social media channels, creating maximum online exposure for homes to the right audiences all over the world.

Waterfront Properties and Commmunities

Print Production Team

Waterfront’s team of production specialists and graphic designers collaborate to create high quality marketing materials such as brochures, postcards, local publications and special mail pieces. Their massive, industrial-sized printer allows the team to create all materials in-house and in a timely fashion. Behind the scenes, the marketing team assists Waterfront agents to solely focus on quickly connecting sellers and buyers. Owners/Brokers from many other areas have come to Waterfront to learn from Rob Thomson, Waterfront’s managing partner, about how the marketing team is able to free up agents’ time to focus entirely on finding buyers for their sellers’ properties. When deciding to sell or buy property, Waterfront invites you to visit their marketing headquarters to meet with Thomson and the marketing team. They promise it will be anything but ordinary.

Old Fashioned Influence

T

he term “influencer marketing” wasn’t around when I graduated from the University of Florida in 1990. Of course, inventions like the “internet” and “social media” weren’t either. The “network of networks” came soon after I graduated with my marketing degree, and of course, the rest is a high-speed technological train that changed the world as we know it. We can now obtain our news, entertainment and trending pop culture through a myriad of multimedia platforms. Long before hashtags, tweets, followers, profiles, posts, streams, blogs and Snapchats were around, print media and magazines were the original influencers of taste, style, home décor, body ideals and purchasing decisions. Thankfully, city regional magazines still serve an important purpose, and studies show this ole “O.G.” will be influencing decisions long after the next invention has come and gone. Anyone can be an “influencer” these days and promotional lines are often blurred online, so we’ve gone old-school and featured real-life people, who can actually be seen in our real-life communities, who have had real influences on our physical world. Check out several Influencers of Palm Beach County on page 38 and see how they’ve made breakthroughs, developed opportunities, broadened horizons and bettered our communities. To make your holiday shopping easier—because let’s face it, we all love advice from a good influencer—we’ve asked six locals who are in-the-know to curate unique gifts for the discerning people on your wish list. From the host to the sartorialist to the jetsetter, they provide their picks for holiday gift-giving on page 67. One notto-be-missed event for real-life fun is the 13th annual Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival Dec. 12 to 15. More than 45 renowned chefs will dazzle your taste buds at this four-day foodie fest, including six new events this year. Choose from the Beef N Bourbon Experience, SPICE, One Caribbean Night, The First Bite, Master Taste, Porch BBQ and Southern Revival to light up your senses. Enjoy, have a great holiday season and we look forward to being your old fashioned influencer for years to come!

Embrace one of the season’s hottest beauty trends—that’s right, nail art—at one of these nail emporiums where playful, “let’s-get-the-party-started” manicures reign. By Kerry Shorr

A

t Alyssa Did My Nails, a pint-sized nail emporium tucked inside Vino Salon Studios in Boca Raton, customers book weeks in advance for the longlasting manicures owner Alyssa Sullivan embellishes with hand-drawn art (stencils and stickers are never used). Designs are usually brainstormed a day in advance, and nail art appointments average an hour and fifteen minutes, but may take longer if extra detail is required. The self-taught nail vet excels at intricate art and painting tiny characters. Gel manicures with nail art range from $60 to $120. 2100 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton; 561.702.8492; @alyssadidmynails Featured Trend: Negative space. Nails were painted black at an angle then topped with varying lines and shapes in a bright white polish. The background is clear, which Sullivan says is great for growing out nails.

Tips for keeping nails healthy and playing with nail art at home:

20

B

rittney Gatins, who co-owns Lush Nail Studio with her sister at Flutter Lash & Beauty Boutique in Stuart, favors floral designs, which come naturally to her and are easy to freestyle. Adept at all nail art, her clients especially like holiday designs and request whatever is au courant. The nine-year nail practitioner, who often has to rebuild the nail beds of newer clients who have been subjected to harsh chemicals and bad practices, uses products that are healthy, durable and will maintain the strength of the nail. Appointments range from 45 minutes to an hour, and gel manicures can last up to three weeks. 735 SE Kindred St., Ste. 114, Stuart; 772.800.5346; @lushnailstudio

H

Featured Trend: Sartorial style. Paying homage to Lilly Pulitzer’s iconic, Palm Beach-inspired prints, this manicure was achieved with two contrasting coats of bright polish then dotted with hues of blue, green and pink.

Featured Trend: Marble. White polish was applied to a teal gel polish then smudged to create a marbled effect. Delicate, gold embellishments were then adhered and finished with a glossy topcoat.

AS: Nails aren’t bulletproof; they can break. I always tell my clients to treat their nails like fine china, not a solo cup. To stave off peels and breaks, wear gloves while washing dishes or cleaning around the house. File nail breaks as soon as they occur, and keep nails and hands looking nice with a moisturizing lotion.

DECEMBER 2019

ighly skilled in the subtle nuances of nail art, Margate’s Fresh+Filed owner Melissa Robillard favors an abstract look, which doesn’t require perfection and allows her talent to shine through. An advocate of ongoing education, she enjoys testing out new techniques and products and encourages her clients to bring in inspirational imagery of nail art sourced from Pinterest or Instagram. BG: Remove gels safely by lightly buffing off the top, shiny layer of topcoat. Dip a cotton pad in pure acetone and wrap nails in foils, then soak for 7 to 10 minutes. When the gel lifts, use a cuticle pusher or a wood stick to push it off the nail then wash your hands in warm, soapy water.

MR: Make sure nail polish is dry before starting any art. You don’t need fancy tools—Amazon has great brushes for a great price. Practice, practice, practice, and don’t get discouraged. Each time you mess up, it’s a lesson in itself. If you follow a nail artist on Instagram, reach out and ask them what they did or used; most are more than willing to answer questions and share their techniques.

tep over the threshold of Casa Gusto and enter an enchanting world of antiques, artworks and found objects, an elegantly designed interior with an assemblage of items that caught the discerning eyes of co-proprietors Cris Briger and Charles Peed. Together, the mother-son duo behind the interior design and antique firm brings together global goods as varied as Mexican Talavera pottery, paintings by Catharine Warren and 17th century furniture. Their West Palm Beach boutique is layered with one-of-a-kind curios and aesthetically pleasing pieces gathered from around the world that are both decorative and useful. Shoppers can stop by to “get the gusto” and browse items only available from Casa Gusto to create a living space that reflects the personality of its inhabitants. Old and new, items at Casa Gusto run the gamut from vintage fabric cushions to handmolded French ceramics to an assortment of beaded corals, tole flowers and Spanish lebrillo, as well as an extensive line of decorative papier-mâché; no item is in the store unless Briger would want to repurchase it for herself. “Casa Gusto came about from a combined effort to bring

26

what we really like to do [to the] public,” Peed explains. “We love hunting, inventing and telling ‘the story.’” Casa Gusto is best known for its curated look that’s not for everyone, but reflects a definite style, he says. The boutique recently celebrated one full year in business since opening its doors in November 2018. Landing in West Palm Beach wasn’t on purpose, but Briger and Peed are enjoying the warehouse aspect of Georgia Avenue as well as the interest they’ve received from the local community. They chose the name Casa Gusto to exude a sense of excitement and passion for the items within; the English language fails to provide a word that rightly captures what “gusto,” with its Latin love-language roots, signifies: a vibrant sense of taste and pleasure. “Casa Gusto is a journey into the likes and loves of its proprietors—a bit like taking a trip and wanting to take part of it home,” Peed says. > Casa Gusto, 6316 Georgia Ave., West Palm Beach; 781.690.4797; getthegusto.com

Farming for the future Farm managers Tripp and Carmen Eldridge oversee Wellington’s Arden, the only community of its kind in South Florida where residents enjoy a five-acre farm brimming with freshly grown produce. By Clarissa Buch Photography by Kenrick Mills

A

few years ago, Tripp and Carmen Eldridge almost set out to bike the world for a year. But before they could leave, Carmen says they “came across the position of a lifetime. “A place called Arden was looking for a full-time farm manager,” she says. “Tripp and I decided to both apply.” Soon after, the Eldridges were called for an interview at Arden, a sustainable living community in western Palm Beach County, where residents volunteer weekly and participate in farming activities as well as enjoy the benefits of farm-to-table meals. Nicknamed an “agrihood,” it’s the only master-planned community of its kind in South Florida and among the first in the state. Residents of Arden enjoy an event barn and five-acre farm brimming with tropical fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. “As beginning farmers, it’s very expensive to acquire land,” Carmen says. “An opportunity for young people to get into farming, grow vegetables and make a living wage is almost unheard of. Tripp and I are passionate about food justice and providing access to healthy and affordable foods, and a place like Arden brings that all together.” Carmen is no stranger to farming. Her grandparents were farmers in Spain, she taught organic farming at a high school in Panama through the Peace Corps and launched a oneacre teaching farm program at the University of North Florida which grows food for the school’s cafeteria. “After North Florida, I went into the nonprofit world as program director for Florida Certified Organic Growers and Consumers Inc.,” Carmen says. “I was focused on equitable

30

DECEMBER 2019

food access for low-income families. That’s also around the same time when Tripp and I met, fell in love and ultimately, moved to Tennessee to farm together in east Nashville.” Originally from Georgia, Tripp discovered farming in his later days of college. He was a sustainable agriculture volunteer in Peace Corps Tanzania and studied farms and food systems in graduate school in places from Mexico to Spain. More recently, he managed similar community-supported agricultural farms throughout Georgia and Tennessee and served as the farm director for the 400-acre Caney Fork Farms. “Farming started as a hobby and a passion, but ultimately grew into my life,” Tripp says. “Once my time in Tennessee was over, Carmen and I decided we wanted to escape winter, but we knew ultimately we wanted to

find a way to continue farming.” Since March 2018, Tripp and Carmen have managed Arden’s community farm, which provides a portion to more than 200 homeowners. When completed, more than 2,000 homes will be provided with crops from the farm. Residents not only share in the harvest of fruits, vegetables and herbs grown November through May, but also take advantage of the variety of “Made in Florida” local products, including coffee, honey, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, all of which are hand-picked by the Eldridges. “This is home now,” Tripp says. “We’ve planted lots of small trees around the farm, and we hope to watch them bear fruit. We have a lot of sweat equity invested in seeing the farm fully come to life as Carmen and I have envisioned it. It’s truly exciting.”

Jupiter Resident Mary Veal’s Yoga Instruction Focuses on the Mind and (Any) Body THE OWNER OF GREEN TARA YOGA AND INSTRUCTOR AT THE EVER-POPULAR TWILIGHT YOGA AT THE LIGHT CLASS SHARES HER SECRET TO INNER PEACE AND A PAIN-FREE PRACTICE. By Tracy Marcello Photography by Kenrick Mills

A

s anyone who’s ever been to twilight yoga at the Jupiter Lighthouse will tell you, the class is—at the risk of sounding too sentimental—lifechanging. From the meandering walk through the lighthouse gardens to the behemoth of a banyan tree under which dozens of people practice, to the Insta-worthy sunsets and symphony of crickets, each moment of the class is magical. Nature aside, that magic is all thanks to Mary Veal, a Jupiter resident and nationally certified yoga instructor specializing in vinyasa, yoga nidra and yoga for arthritis. Veal, who has been teaching yoga classes for more than 10 years, began leading twilight yoga in 2013 at the request of friend and Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum president and CEO Jamie Stuve. Today, the class has a cult following and a long line of yogis waiting to lay down their mats every Monday evening (the class begins at 6 p.m. November through March and 7 p.m. April through October). “It just took off because it’s such a beautiful space; it’s meant for yoga,” Veal says of the yoga deck, which can accommodate up to 140 people. “Being in nature, even if it’s just for an hour—feeling the vibes of the environment, the weather, the animals, whatever’s happening— it’s important for our nervous system.” Veal’s practice began in a far less glamorous fashion more than 20 years ago when she saw an ad for a free class on a roadside billboard. Having suffered from arthritis and similar ailments since childhood, she decided to give it a try. “I said, ‘OK, I have nothing to lose.’ After just one class, I was like, ‘Wow, my body did what I told it to do,’” she recalls. “I started going every week, and about six months into it, I did 10 minutes of yoga on my own. I’ve been doing it every day since then.” 32

DECEMBER 2019

Several years and yoga certifications later, Veal left a long career at Comcast, and in 2018, opened Green Tara Yoga in Jupiter. The studio offers classes ranging from rock ‘n’ roll yoga to chair yoga, which Veal says is great for people struggling with arthritis (she is now the only certified yoga for arthritis instructor in the state), healing after surgery, or living with other chronic conditions or pain. All classes (including twilight yoga at the lighthouse) are taught by several different instructors, many of whom Veal has led in their 200-hour certification. “I try to offer classes with a wide variety of teachers and a wide variety of styles. There’s no hot yoga, there are no mirrors, there’s no competition. It’s just try whatever speaks to you until you find something you like,” she says.

Yoga classes aside, Veal also hosts an annual yoga retreat in Sebastian—the next one is in January—and several international yoga retreats to places like Africa, Peru and Iceland. To date, Veal recalls India as her most memorable retreat, not only as the birthplace of yoga, but as a reminder that the practice of yoga brings people together—whether lying underneath a banyan tree at sunset or kneeling on a floor across the globe. “When you start doing yoga and you start seeing that inner peace inside yourself, you see it everywhere. There are no strangers anywhere in the world,” Veal says. “What’s important is to appreciate the cultural differences, but to see the sameness—that love, that compassion and that joy—in everyone.”

Magical Madeira Explore Portugal’s charming island while calling Savoy Palace home. By M E L I S S A P U P P O Photos co u r te s y of S AV OY PA L A C E

T

o witness the most breathtaking view of Madeira’s skyline, you must first zip up 16 stories on an elevator to reach Galáxia Skybar in Funchal. The panoramic rooftop terrace is replete with a celestial cocktail selection and front row seats to watch Mother Nature’s daily ritual of casting a golden glow on the coastal town’s rugged landscape during sunset. Once the sun sinks behind the mountains, there’s nothing left but twinkling stars above. The dynamic dining venue is also on its way to becoming one of the hottest spots to celebrate New Year’s Eve as Funchal, Madeira’s capital, puts on one of the most spectacular fireworks shows in the world, as noted in Guinness World Records. A spectacle of colorful stars explode from hidden pockets around Madeira, so magnificent you won’t want to miss it. If you haven’t made plans for the New Year, you can witness the beautiful display thanks to the restaurant’s permanent home: Savoy Palace. Awe-inspiring views of the city—and the fireworks—won’t be hard to come by while staying at the behemoth of a resort, which

34

DECEMBER 2019

opened in late summer. Madeira, an archipelago in Portugal, is easily accessible from Miami International Airport with a transfer from Lisbon. Formerly named Hotel Classic Savoy, the resort was demolished in 2009 and redesigned by Madeiran-born Nini Andrade Silva, whose global work includes properties from Colombia to the Azores to Brazil and even Miami Beach. The result is a modern, 17-story ocean-facing luxury resort with a dramatic glass wave shape, the terraces and balconies draped in lush greenery. Andrade Silva’s interior design weaves in Madeiran aesthetics such as embroidery. The enchanting gold, winding staircase is outfitted in a deep red-hued carpet reminiscent of the island’s famous fortified wine. One of her most treasured details: an impressive 33-foot chandelier in the main lobby wrought from nearly 4 miles of metal chain. (above) Bay of Funchal.

gulfstreammediagroup.com

If you haven’t made plans for the New Year, you can witness the beautiful display thanks to the restaurant’s permanent home: Savoy Palace. Inside the property are 352 rooms, 14 pool suites and two presidential suites. In addition, there are four restaurants to try local cuisine like black scabbard fish paired with a refreshing glass of Poncha, the island’s traditional alcoholic drink. It’s made with aquardente de cana honey, sugar, lemon and fruit juices, all stirred together with a mexelote, or wooden spoon. Discerning travelers who venture to the Portuguese outpost should opt for the three-night “Fly Me to Paradise” presidential suite stay. The package includes private elevator access to the 17th floor; a private butler; rooftop infinity pools; a round trip ticket on a private jet courtesy of Madjet; and private transfers in Lisbon and Funchal. A dedicated travel planner is also on hand to help create memorable experiences such as a sightseeing tour up to Monte while cruising in a Rolls Royce Limited Edition before taking part in one of Madeira’s famed activities: a toboggan ride in a wicker basket. Funchal is the only place in the world that offers the thrilling attraction, which once was a common form of “downhill” public transportation. Known as “The Garden Island of the Atlantic,” Madeira is an undiscovered gem waiting to be found for many Americans. It’s earned the top spot on “Europe’s Leading Island Destination” for five consecutive years. Aside from a rich history, the beauty of Savoy Palace is its central location near Old Town Funchal. It’s close enough to explore surrounding areas to go hiking or canyoning and is walking distance to markets and shops while strolling along the avenue. Back on property, guests can unwind in the 3,300-square-foot Laurea Spa inspired by the Laurissilva Forest—Madeira’s UNESCO World Heritage site. Under green jewel tones, enjoy sensorial showers, a cold water course with black pebbles inspired by the levadas that carry water to the townspeople, a waterfall pool, sauna, steam room and salt room. As for those stunning views, there’s not a bad seat at Savoy Palace. Take your pick for dinner, perhaps this time at Jacarandá where after sunset, the party rises on top of the palace. Toast the evening while drinking some of that good ol’ Poncha. The resort’s bartender, Kevin Nóbrega, whips up quite possibly the best flavor combinations in town, but we’ll let you be the judge.

Build a Lasting Retirement, Even in Times of Market Volatility

Even when markets become volatile, you can keep your retirement plan on track by staying focused and taking the time to rebalance and refresh your investments. The past eight years have been a heady time for the Dow, but recent large single-day drops have focused attention on how to protect your future if you’re planning to retire sometime soon. After a long bull market, portfolios that might have been well-balanced may now be overweight in stocks and may require reallocation toward lower-risk investments. Picture the future. If you’re concerned about market volatility, take the time to think carefully about your retirement and ask the big questions. How much will you need to retire? What sort of lifestyle do you want to maintain? Do you want to leave something to your heirs, or create a charitable legacy? Have you thought about what your healthcare needs might be in the future? According to Sal Tiano, “We need to think ahead. To stay on track, planning for a successful retirement requires flexibility and a comprehensive look at all aspects of your life.” Plan for a long retirement. Statistics show that individuals with higher incomes and healthier lifestyles tend to live longer. So if you’re over 65, you might live to 90 or even 95. Many of us underestimate the long lives we may enjoy. “We can live very long lives if we take care of

ourselves,” says Louise Armour. “This also means taking the time to look after our financial wellbeing so in retirement we can spend more time with the people we love and pursuing activities we find gratifying.” Harness your resources. Once you’ve got a team of advisors in place to help you realize your goals, it’s time to execute. The rules are clear: Save and invest consistently. Diversify your investments to minimize risk. Be sure to maximize Social Security benefits, both yours and your spouse’s. Other aspects of retirement planning are less obvious, but clearly as important. The use of credit, for example. It can be harder to borrow when in retirement, so it may make sense to arrange for a line of credit while you are still working. This way you can use credit strategically, as an alternative source of short-term funding for a home remodel, for example, or for unexpected healthcare expenses, when selling investments would make less sense, such as during a recession. John Smyth says, “Strategic use of credit is an often overlooked and underused strategy for protecting assets during retirement. It is a crucial tool to consider when establishing or refreshing an overall retirement plan.” Prepare for success. Now is the time to reassess how volatility may affect your balance sheet. Exercise control: Think about the different areas

Promotion

of your wealth and how they serve different purposes. • Liquidity. Determine how much money you need as a safety net. These funds can be held in low-risk accounts. • Lifestyle. How much do you need to set aside to fund lifestyle expenses, now and later in retirement? These funds may be allocated to conservatively diversified portfolios. • Growth and wealth preservation. Consider investing any remaining assets more aggressively. These assets can fund longer-term goals such as transferring wealth to family and charitable organizations that are important to you. Even when markets are volatile, when it comes to planning for a satisfying retirement, information and good planning drive success and help create peace of mind. Rely on a dedicated and experienced advisor. Working with an advisor knowledgeable about all aspects of retirement planning is essential to achieving a successful outcome. mericans for the Arts, a national organization that brings together those who support and sustain all things culturally, estimates its industry generates a seven-to-one return on investment. In that case, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre—led by Producing Artistic Director and Chief Executive Andrew Kato—funnels an approximate $56 million into community coffers every year. “People don’t understand that theater is a business and that there are great advantages to having the No. 1 regional theater in the lower United States in their own backyard,” he says, referring to a ranking by the League of Resident Theatres. “It is truly an investment in our community by supporting our growth.”

The theater is in the midst of a massive renovation project that will increase the size of the stage to make it Broadwaycompatible. “Pre-Broadway shows—they all start at a regional theater somewhere, including ‘Hamilton’,” Kato says. The Believe Campaign needs to raise $7 million this season to complete this construction phase, “but getting the building finished is not the end result; it’s the start,” he says. The 55-year-old has been at the helm of the beloved facility since 2004; in that time, he has quintupled its staff. “We’re definitely an economic driver,” Kato says. “Area restaurants— when we’re full, they’re full.”

The royals of radio rule the airwaves from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., dishing on everything from news oddities and viral videos to talking about the everyday humor in people’s lives. “We prepare with our life,” Foster, 54, says. “We make a lot of notes just about what we encounter on a daily basis.” “We’ve become professional observers,” Sevareid, 56, says. “It’s a lot of fun.” They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in November. “She’s my best friend, and she doesn’t annoy me,” Foster laughs. “I’m not going to say the same,” Sevareid laughs back. The duo plans to stay at WOLL-FM for the foreseeable future. “As long as people are still listening and want us around, we’ll keep with it,” Foster says. gulfstreammediagroup.com

is presence on the Jupiter campus of Scripps Research is paving the way for biological breakthroughs. As the institute’s executive vice president of Florida operations, Douglas Bingham stands behind its study of basic and applied, curiosity-driven biomedical research, in addition to other major pressing health concerns. “I’m more of an enabler than an influencer,” he says. “I enable scientists to be all they can be.” Bingham recently facilitated a $5 million commitment to buy a cryoelectron microscope, which enables the visualization of biological molecules like antibodies, proteins and viruses, and in 2020 will kick off a $15 million campaign to build a Molecular Imaging Center using the technology. “Science, at the end of the day, is a very robust marketplace, and you have to compete in the marketplace for resources,” Bingham says. “One of my jobs is to get out there and sell what we do and get support for it.” When he is not helping his team of scientists test and prove their ideas and theories, he either is riding his bicycle around town, hanging out by the beach or dining at a waterfront restaurant. “North Palm Beach County has a real nice laid-back vibe to it,” the 66-year-old Juno Beach resident says. “I’ve always liked Florida.”

Noel Martinez President and CEO, Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce

H

e considers himself “a chamber person deep down inside”—probably because he has been involved with the organization for nearly 18 years. “There’s something special about a chamber of commerce, especially our chamber of commerce,” says Noel Martinez, president and CEO of Palm Beach North. “It’s part of who I am.” The Hialeah native moved to the area to open Bonefish Grill in the Shoppes of Oakbrook. Once there, he joined the Chamber. As a member, he volunteered at the ArtiGras Fine Arts Festival, created the Small Business Advisory Council’s inaugural expo and eventually joined the staff as director of membership development. the chamber in 2014 for other pursuits, including executive stints at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County and Leadership Palm Beach County. His return was inevitable. “When this opportunity presented itself, I went after it,” the 42-year-old Jupiter resident says. “For me, it was just the next step in my career.” His goal is to carry out the non-profit’s mission of supporting local businesses and championing sustainable growth. “A chamber of commerce brings people together,” Martinez says. “It brings people the ability to collaborate. MacArthur Campus, predicts Jeff Atwater, vice president of strategic initiatives and chief financial officer. “We will do this on that campus,” he says. “We will solve this in Jupiter, Florida; that is what we have set our sights on.” The former state representative and senator who had a long career in banking is putting both skillsets to use in his newly created position. In conjunction with his fiscal duties, his job entails facilitating partnerships with the neighboring Max Planck Florida Institute for

Raphael Clemente Executive Director, West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority

H

e is the eyes and ears of West Palm Beach’s core community—an area that encompasses buildings, businesses and bustle between the Royal Park Bridge and the Flagler Memorial Bridge from the Intracoastal Waterway to Australian Avenue. As executive director of the West Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority, Raphael Clemente has the nuts-and-bolts job of keeping the public realm landscaped, litter-free and looking good. “A lot of what we do as an organization is to focus on the basics,” Clemente says. “Is it safe? Is it clean? Is it well-lit? We always try to stay on top of all of those details that make the place appealing and attractive.” The goal of the special taxing district is to promote the vibrancy of the city and create cultural, economic and social programs that engage and entice residents and visitors. The more than two dozen downtown murals were painted by local artists and by national and international artists in partnership with the CANVAS Outdoor Museum Show. “When I think of my job, I think of it in terms of, ‘Can I attract another business?’” the 51-year-old urban planner says. “But I think also of, ‘Can I attract people?’ It all comes down to what we can do to make everyone’s lives better.”

Over 20 years specializing in Hair Loss Solutions ANDREA GREEN, OWNER

Q

Is hair replacement a viable solution for women, or is it still the old toupees for men?

replacement is a very viable solution for A Hair women with hair loss. Today, all individuals

can go from thinning or balding to a full head of human hair that is virtually undetectable in a little more than an hour. Hair replacement systems have become significantly better in construction and appearance, lighter and more affordable. A hair replacement for the scalp is comparable to contact lenses for the eyes; both methods are semi-permanent, disposable, comfortable and can be worn 24 hours a day. Hair systems are now made of thin, lightweight and transparent materials with beautiful human hair infused in them. They come in many color options and grey variations, and are customized to the exact color and area of thinning or balding. The hair replacement becomes one with your own hair and scalp. It is cut, colored, blended and styled just like your own natural hair. The finished product is a fantastic full head of hair that is comfortable and seamless, while giving the same appearance of your own hair growing out of your scalp with a natural hairline. The toupee technology of the past could never achieve such a natural look, and it imposed limitations on the individuals’ lifestyles. All hair replacement wearers are now confident and happy with their appearances and live full, active lives. Everyone can play golf and tennis, dance, swim and shower without any fear or concern that anyone will ever notice a difference in their hairstyles.

NEP TU NI A N E SC AP E Asked to inject a relaxed, “old beach home” vibe into this newly constructed, two-story, bay-facing home in Islamorada that also functions as a sedative retreat for her clients, Kerry Allabastro of Allabastro Designs incorporated a calming palette of soft gray and white hues accentuated by coastal pops of turquoise and deep blue. Sylvan flourishes, like the wire-brushed wood floors and a custom teak countertop from Jefferson Woodworking in Palm City, are featured liberally throughout. A pair of 15-foot sailing boards Allabastro found at a now-shuttered nautical shop in West Palm Beach were stained and suspended above the doorway that pushes out to a pool deck and private beach; allabastrodesigns.com

To spawn a space that felt comfortable, convivial and au courant, Susan Lachance of Susan Lachance Interior Design pulled in warm wooden details, straight and curvaceous lines, and cool, muted metallics. As they pass through the front door, guests are welcomed beneath a Brentwood chandelier with tendrils of framed lights in brushed aluminum. Further in, the living room’s custom drop-down ceiling gazes down at a TRC Lab rug from The Rug Company in stark hues of white and gray that gets the conversation started, whilst anchoring a Nathan Anthony Haus sofa from Judith Norman and a bench and velvety swivel chairs from Grafton Furniture upholstered in a mélange of complementary gray textiles. Rustic Withdrawal

Imbue your pad with earthy materials and organic elements that inspire a beautifully bucolic vibe.

ARCA D I A N RY T HM

Jaime Blomquist of Jaime Blomquist Interiors took inspiration from nature and found objects when designing this rustic chic kitchen in Lighthouse Point. To create an open floor plan her clients use as a central hub for entertaining and hosting casual family meals, walls were removed and plumbing relocated. Recurring marble elements—including the backsplash, countertops and the expanse beneath the custom range hood—create visual continuity and draw the eye west to the palm-edged patio and water beyond. A Ralph Lauren Roark chandelier with Edison bulbs gracefully hangs from the raised ceiling. Beams and the barn door were fashioned from reclaimed Louisiana cypress wood, and French-patterned travertine stone floors add the feeling of warmth; jaimeblomquist.com

AGRONOMIC ENTRY Barn doors aren’t just for barns anymore. These stylish sliders, including this knotty alder wood version from Dogberry Country, finished in a vintage dark chocolate hue, make sui generis alternatives to more traditional types and are ideal for space-starved settings; $469; available at Lowes locations; lowes.com

LOOSE LEAF Dress up cabinetry with hardware that purloins from nature, like Notting Hill’s lifelike, hand-tinted brass oak leaf knob; $46; available at Palm Beach Classic Hardware in West Palm Beach; palmbeachclassichardware.com

PONY UP Equine motifs are sophisticatedly realized in Alexander McQueen’s intricately handwoven Tibetan wool Pony rug; from $4,296; available at The Rug Company in Dania Beach; therugcompany.com

Vintage Keep feet planted in the present with retro-fabulous pieces and functional acquisitions of antiquity that pay homage to the past.

ROA R I N G R E D UX

To honor the Jazz Age beginnings of this West Palm Beach home, Tracy Dunn of Tracy Dunn Design let antique store finds and fabric-refreshed vintage furnishings steal the spotlight. Aquatic blues and juicy greens, a zesty color schematic familiar to South Florida, anchor the space and provide fascinating contrast with the original hardwood floors. Side chairs from DAFA Antiques and the wing chairs, once owned by the client’s grandparents, bookend the fireplace and were reupholstered in punchy floral and ikat fabrics from Quadrille in Dania Beach. To coax the eye around the room, Chinese porcelains were perched atop the fireplace mantel, built-in bookshelves were added, in addition to the 1920s demilune table that stands sentry behind the sofa. Artwork, like the vintage beach painting on the southern wall, was kept to a minimum, while contemporary appurtenances, like the faux turtle shells hanging above the French doors, offer daily reminders of where the owners live and play; tracydunndesign.com

CENTER STAGE 19th-century center tables were typically used for dining or playing card games. This Charles X table (circa 1830) features a veined marble top and an amboyna and amaranth base edged with giltwood Egyptian sphinxes for an opulent twist; $18,000; available at Iconic Snob Galeries in West Palm Beach; iconicsnobgaleries.com

SUPPORTING ACTRESS Decorative pedestals, like these 19th-century, neoclassical Majolica porcelain ones decorated with foliage designs and dancing Grecian maidens, give plants and decorative objects a place of privilege to perch; $16,500; available at Cedric DuPont Antiques in West Palm Beach; cedricdupontantiques.com

FINNISH THIS Trip the light fantastic with this 1940s era snowflake-crowned, brass chandelier by Paavo Tynell, otherwise known as “the man who illuminated Finland;” $29,000; available at Ponce Berga in West Palm Beach; ponceberga.com

Featured Speaker: Mackenzie Phillips Actor, Author, Advocate

When Mackenzie was a teenager, Hollywood and the world took notice of the charming, talented, precocious child actor after her star-making turn in American Graffiti. As an adult, she paid dearly for a lifetime of excess, working tirelessly to reconcile a wonderful, terrible past in which she succumbed to the power of addiction and the pull of her magnetic father. Mackenzie speaks honestly on her lifelong battle with personal demons and near-fatal addictions. Audiences are drawn to her famous story and listen attentively to her journey overcoming obstacles and working towards recovery.

ack for its 13th year of drawing world-class chefs together for a weekend of socializing and showing off, the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival will descend upon the Palm Beach County scene Dec. 12 to 15, with more events in Palm Beach than ever before. While this year’s festival will feature many repeat favorites and returning chefs, six new events will spice things up with a wide variety of foodie fêtes and culinary experiences, from barbecue and bourbon to Indian spices. The festival kicks off Thursday evening with four different five-course dinners at restaurants such as PB Catch, Buccan and Avocado Grill’s Palm Beach Gardens location. However, the buzzed-about highlight of the Thursday-night festivities is an utterly new event: the Beef N Bourbon Ex-

perience, hosted at Okeechobee Steakhouse by widely televised chef Adam Richman, and Dan McKee, master distiller at Michter’s. Richman, a recognized Travel Channel personality, will walk diners through five hearty courses—including meats treated to the Lewis family’s three-generational top-secret beef-aging process, an Okeechobee Steakhouse signature— plus expertly matched rare bourbon pairings. Friday sees the advent of two new events: SPICE, an Indian luncheon, and A Dinner at Florie’s, held at The Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach. Hosted by chef Julien Gremaud

at his original Avocado Grill location in West Palm Beach, SPICE is a five-course noontime meal prepared alongside renowned chefs Maneet Chauhan and Pushkar Marathe. “I have worked with Pushkar previously; we did an Indian-themed dinner at Avocado Grill to benefit No Kid Hungry,” shares Gremaud, who has been involved with Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival since its inception. “I am also looking forward to cooking with Maneet—she has the best social media, and I love watching her on Food Network.” While Avocado Grill’s typical menu consists of a medley of flavorful, garden-fresh meals and small plates such as sushi, raw bar specials and

Chef Adam Richman dishes on Thursday’s Beef N Boubon Experience

Y

ou may have only seen him on your TV screen, but at the Beef N Bourbon Experience, chef Adam Richman will be calling on all five of your senses—especially taste. Best known for his role in “Man v. Food,” he knows a thing or two about fine flavors. Below, Richman foretells the delectable agenda guests can expect during a night spent sampling quality beef and rare bourbons.

What’s in store for guests at the Beef N Bourbon Experience? At this event, we’ll pair the best cuts of meats with high-grade bourbons. One of my favorite bourbons, and quite possibly the only rye I like, is made by Michter’s and their master distiller, Dan McKee. Dan will also be on hand with me to unveil a special release, which has not yet even been made public. Tell us about some of the courses guests can look forward to. I don’t want to give too much away in advance, but Okeechobee Steakhouse is the oldest steakhouse in Florida, operated by third-generation owner Ralph Lewis. Their beef program, featuring only prime beef, is unparalleled. Different cuts of meat, depending upon marbling, proximity to bone and the length of time they are aged—and even whether they are wet- or dry-aged—can drastically alter the flavor, creating quite a bit of nuance and texture in each cut. With each of the five courses, the food and 94

bourbon will slowly ramp up in intensity. What’s so special about the pairing of beef and bourbon? Bourbon is not something we often see paired with different courses of meals. Bourbon is often seen as something to be enjoyed on its own, but the corn content of bourbon—coupled with its notes of caramel, spice, smoke, vanilla, oak, grass, cinnamon and even cloves—lends itself to pairing with rich and earthy red meat. What’s a fun food fact you’d like to share relevant to PBF&WF? My first real exposure to cooking with and understanding the flavor applications of the spice sumac happened at the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival years ago, courtesy of chefs Marc Murphy and Robert Irvine. Robert had thrown it in as a secret ingredient in the cooking competition, and being able to sit with them and the good people of Creekstone Farms and learn how it can be applied to red meat and in other recipes—from both a legendary meat purveyor and two of the best chefs to ever do it—was incredible. I learned so much that during a recent trip to Israel, where that spice is super prevalent, they were impressed that I knew so much about it and asked where I learned so much about a spice that influences the Middle Eastern menu. My response: “The Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival!”

(of course) guacamole, it also blends in the rich warmth of Indian cuisine. “I always try to incorporate some Indian flavors to our menus and specials,” he shares. “I have many very close Indian friends, and I learn techniques from them, cooking in their homes. Indian spices add a delicious element to a variety of dishes. We have a popular curried cauliflower on our menu— it’s also vegan!—and I put my spin on it by adding coconut.”

SPICE attendees will delight in the irresistible combination of taste and place as Indian fragrances permeate Avocado Grill’s newly breezy, open-concept space. “We recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of Avocado Grill and renovated the entire restaurant,” Gremaud says. “It is such an airy and serene setting now, perfect for a Friday afternoon lunch.” Those who want to experience both of Friday’s newto-the-festival events can head from SPICE to A Dinner at Florie’s, hosted by chefs Jose Gamez and Brandon Salomon. Guests will be treated to cuisine presented by Four Seasons visiting chefs and wine pairings by in-house sommelier

Jessica Altieri, all set against the rousing backdrop of the liveflame kitchen at Florie’s. Other foodie-friendly ways to spend your Friday include four longtime festival favorites, this year featuring all-new chef lineups: Lunch with Friends at Meat Market; Southern Revival, A Bell & Evans Dining Series at The Regional Kitchen & Public House; an Italian feast called GRAVY featuring Antinori Wines at Café Sapori; and the Chef Welcome Party at The Breakers Palm Beach. Saturday sees the final three of the six events hitting the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival scene for the first time this

year. At Master Taste, oenophiles will get a chance to sample rare vintages handselected by master sommelier Virginia Philip at her eponymous wine shop and academy in Palm Beach’s modish Royal Poinciana Plaza. Those with an appetite for grilled goods over grapes can opt instead to attend Porch BBQ at Lantana’s Oceano Kitchen. Chef-owners Jeremy and Cindy Bearman,

will be joined by chef Stephen Stryjewski to host the walk-around tasting event promising mouthwatering smoked meats and just-plain-good cookin’. Awarded the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef: South” title in 2011, Stryjewski—who owns various award-winning restaurants in New Orleans—knows good barbecue. Closing out Saturday’s gourmandizing is a longtime tradition with a newly wel-

coming twist: the After Hours: Chef After Party. Now held at Grato—and with no tickets required to attend—the chef-soaked affair will be open to all revelers, with a cash bar and no cover charge. Join top chefs Clay Conley and Zach Bell, for carousing at 9 p.m.—with plenty of time following the final gastronomic event on Saturday’s agenda—which goes ‘til late. “This will be my ninth festival, and we’ve had a great time hosting the Saturday night Chef After Party for the last five years,” Conley says. “In the past it’s been hosted at Imoto, but this year we decided to do something casual by doing it at Grato without a ticket required to attend. It’s a great opportunity to hang out with some of the guest chefs in a laid-back setting. We’ve also enjoyed creating an awesome menu with some creative bites and cocktails.”

While the 2019 lineup of new festival events is tantalizing, don’t overlook the returning events—they’re back again this year for a reason. Case in point: the Grand Tasting event by Wine Spectator, which takes place as a “grand finale” of sorts on Sunday afternoon, will bring together more than 50 local restaurants and 2,000 guests to watch chefs compete for a $10,000 charity prize. The Grand Chef Throwdown, presented by Creekstone Farms, features guest judges Robert Irvine and Adam Richman.

Fern Street Wine Bar & Kitchen Where Ingredients Matter By Marla Horn L azarus

I

n a quiet downtown neighborhood, Fern Street Wine Bar & Kitchen brings a unique concept while raising the bar. The menu showcases clean, non-GMO ingredients with no antibiotics or nitrates. “All of our proteins are carefully researched to ensure the purest product,” says managing partner Nick Scalis. “Long story short, our focus is on ingredients.” Born into the food industry, Scalis told his parents at age 15 he would someday own a restaurant. Fern Street is a project he wanted to execute for a long time, and along with partner Chris Muneio, he’s living his dream. With front row seats to the open kitchen, begin your culinary journey in the hands of executive chef Chris Healey. Along with a glass of Sancerre, enjoy a vi-

sually stunning charcuterie board, filled with a distinctive variety of cheeses, meats, olives, fruits, mustard and jams. An imported Italian oven is used for all of the hot dishes, cooked on cast iron skillets in the scratch kitchen, including the seared scallops served with bok choy slaw and hummus, as well as house-smoked pork belly

with organic honeycomb, parmesan, shallot and arugula in a honey vinaigrette. The bibb salad of delicate star lettuce, crisp bacon, dolce gorgonzola, heirloom tomato, cucumber, dressed with bacon vinaigrette and garnished with edible flowers, is a work of art. A perfect crust on the wild mushroom pizza is layered with mushrooms, caramelized onions, fresh greens, creamy buffalo mozzarella, black truffle salt and garlic puree, and bursts with flavor. For larger plates, there’s the Fern Street mac and cheese, which blends mozzarella, fontina, 26-month gouda, wild mushrooms, broccolini, asparagus and heirloom grape tomatoes. The tender 8-ounce filet mignon is served over enoki mushroom noodles with a white wine pan sauce. For something lighter, ask for the roasted vegetable platter, a masterpiece of seasonal vegetables, including broccolini, fingerling potatoes, rainbow carrots, cauliflower, wild mushrooms, onions and asparagus on a bed of hummus. We recommend ordering the s’mores with Ecuadworian chocolate covered in toasted marshmallows and graham crackers for dipping. Open for dinner nightly, dine al fresco surrounded by beautiful murals or with a view of the open kitchen. Fern Street also hosts live entertainment and weekly art exhibitions.

Cocktail Hour with Josh Cohen

WHO: Two-time Olympic gold medalist, professional fighters league MMA star, advocate and author Kayla Harrison. WHAT: The Monkey Goes Bananas Rum Old Fashioned paired with wood fire-roasted meatballs with pomodoro, ricotta and grilled ciabatta, the mortadella panino of provolone piccante, sourdough and giardiniera and the smoked prosciutto pizzetta with fig, taleggio, spicy honey and crispy sage. WHERE: Mizn’ers Monkey Bar at The Boca Raton Resort & Club / 501 E. Camino Real, Boca Raton /

1

Becoming the first American ever to win the Olympic gold medal in judo at the 2012 games in London was: truly surreal. To go to

the Olympics is a dream come true. You’re in the .000001-percent of the population. To represent my country on the greatest stage in the world and win a gold medal is literally what I have dreamt of since I was a child.

2

Winning a second Olympic gold medal four years later in Rio was different because: this time it was for me. In London, I felt like

I owed it to everyone who was a part of my journey. Every doctor, every training partner, my coaches, my family, every [sexual abuse] survivor. But in Rio, I wanted to prove to myself that it wasn’t a fluke, that I truly am one of one. I’m special, and I can accomplish whatever I set my mind to.

3

Something that most people don’t know about my former training partner, team-

mate and roommate Ronda Rousey is: she

is a very giving person. When I was 16 and dead broke, she would pay for my groceries, or take me for fancy dinners. She stood up for me in an online forum when people were trying to victim-shame me. She’s tough, but she’s also kind.

4

The reason why I decided to start my Fearless Foundation, and to release my book “Fighting Back” is because: I want to

leave the world better than I found it. There’s lots of education on stranger-danger and cyberbullying, but there are no educational tools to help us talk to our youth about what they should do if someone close to them tries to take advantage of them. “Fighting Back” is that tool. Its an in-depth look using my journal entries and my own story of what sexual abuse is, and how we can prevent it. I have been given an amazing opportunity and platform to help make a difference in the world. It would be a sin for me not to.

An Ohio native, Kayla Harrison began her illustrious career in judo at the age of six. Beyond making history by winning Olympic gold medals for Team USA at both the 2012 and 2016 games, Harrison is also a two-time gold medalist at the Pan American Games, as well as a gold and two-time bronze medalist at the World Judo Championships. After signing with the The Professional Fighters League (PFL), Harrison made her MMA debut in June 2018, and at the time of publication, has amassed a perfect 6-0 record. Arguably the face and biggest star of the PFL, Harrison recently resigned her contract to remain with the league, whose television rights were acquired by ESPN in 2019. Harrison is scheduled to fight next for the PFL $1,000,000 championship prize on New Year’s Eve at famed Madison Square Garden. A survivor and activist, Harrison launched the “Fearless Foundation” with the mission “to shine a light on the darkness that is child sexual abuse and to enrich the lives of survivors through education and sport, leading survivors to mastery and enabling them to flourish in all aspects of life.” An avid reader and lover of dogs and the beach, Harrison currently resides in Coconut Creek. 116

Chef Vinny Trupia

Guanabanas Restaurant

V

S O U T H

inny Trupia, better known in his kitchen as Chef Vinny, was brought aboard the Guanabanas kitchen crew at the end of 2008, just as the restaurant was about to open. He brought with him his passion for the restaurant business and his trademark “whatever it takes” attitude. Throughout Guanabanas’ history, there have been many influences in the kitchen and there are many answers when a person asks questions like “who wrote the menu?” or “who thought of this or that?” Chef Vinny has earned his place at the top of that group as a dedicated and creative influence when it comes to designing and running the day to day operations of a high volume restaurant. The future is bright for this young chef and his passion for utilizing new and unique products will keep the menu fresh and exciting. In a day and age where things like the Food Network make television stars and “celebrity chefs” out of “chefs” who never had to cut their teeth in a restaurant kitchen, Chef Vinny has proven he has what it takes to be an innovative and ecologically responsible chef and still “grind it out” on a Saturday night.

rowing up on a farm in Rutigliano, Italy (Puglia region), Chef Pino began creating dishes with the few ingredients available, often limited to beans. Today fava beans, chickpeas and lentils are still a core element in many of his entrées. For La Masseria he has designed a superb menu that uses a wealth of traditional ingredients to evoke flavors and aromas of the Italian farmhouse culture. “I remember the masseria food; it was simple, fresh and flavorful – it’s whatever the land or sea has to offer in that season,” he says. “That’s what I want to offer people here, the best dishes that represent authentic Italian cuisine.” Chef Pino created the beloved menu at La Masseria Palm Beach Gardens, his latest restaurant venture; as well as La Masseria NYC, Masseria dei Vini NYC and La Masseria East Greenwich, RI. Chef Pino proudly celebrates his Puglia roots.

T

he same page in a recent issue of the Palm Beach Post reported on the two greatest threats to the area’s peace and tranquility—the high-speed Virgin Trains, aka Brightline, and the high appetite giant pythons. Both problems have been caused by human action, or inaction. The pythons are a threat because almost 100,000 were imported to this country over 10 years, and some were illegally released in the Everglades where they have thrived in increasingly large numbers. This was reported by Frank Cerabino, the Post’s entertaining columnist. The train problem is a result of various government agencies permitting so many grade crossings on the FEC Railway corridor, never anticipating those tracks might host fast passenger trains. On the same page as Cerabino’s column, the paper reported on a meeting in Jupiter in which citizens objected to the high-speed train on safety and other grounds. First the snakes. Cerabino wrote that they worry him more than climate change. They have already destroyed much of the native wildlife in the Glades. They even duel with alligators, but not always with success. Cerabino noted the pythons are good swimmers. They have been found in Biscayne Bay, well inland from the Everglades. What if, in their quest for food, the snakes start swimming through canals into civilized territory? It is a scary thought that owners of waterfront property might find a huge snake lounging on their back porches or lurking inside boats. They could be a threat to pets or children. On the other

128

hand, the snakes like to sun on roads, and some might make the mistake of lounging on railroad tracks and not moving fast enough when a Brightline train roars by.

S

nakes were not part of the conversation when residents objected to the expansion of Brightline through Jupiter en route to Orlando. Construction commotion and safety were, however. Nobody can argue that trains going 79 miles per hour or faster are not a concern in areas where the tracks are on the same grade as auto traffic. The FEC gave up its long-distance trains in the 1960s, and little thought was given to the possibility that the same tracks might again be used for passenger trains. The railroad is positioned to serve a booming South Florida population. Indeed, much of that population lives in communities developed along the railroad before major roads came through. Much of the Treasure Coast growth came after the FEC ceased passenger service and numerous grade crossings were built to accommodate the new residents. There are only a few places where roads bridge the tracks.

This rail corridor is not like the northeast where the high-speed Acela train runs on tracks that either are recessed or elevated at road intersections. That railroad was rebuilt for safety many years ago, about the time cars replaced horse drawn buggies. So were the numerous commuter railroads serving the major cities. It is too late to say Florida might have had the foresight to follow that example. It is not too late, however, to consider a partial rebuild of the FEC tracks, closing some grade crossings or bridging major intersections. This was done on the CSX tracks when Interstate 95 was built. More recently, the New River in Fort Lauderdale has a span rising high over the water. It is used by Tri-Rail trains capable of easily making the climb, while the slow and less agile freight traffic continues to use the old drawbridge. It greatly reduces the number of bridge openings that interfere with boat traffic. There are crossings on the FEC tracks where elevating Brightline might be the cheapest way to go. There are also several sections along the FEC where closing a crossing would open up stretches of track where trains could safely hit high speeds. The fact is Brightline is here to stay and opposition from residents of Jupiter and other Treasure Coast communities would disappear if a few stations (and this is planned) are added along the 135 miles from West Palm to Cocoa Beach. The new service gets rave reviews from those who ride the current route from West Palm to Miami. Nothing promotes acceptance of this fast train like riding it. gulfstreammediagroup.com
