his year, my valentine and I celebrated 30 years together (dating and married). That’s quite a milestone—and I suddenly feel quite old—but the truth is, it has flown by like Cupid’s arrow surreptitiously fired from his bow. I remember our early days, all the traveling we did before children and how exciting life was, marveling at all the firsts, the adventures, the unforeseen.

Traveling provides a unique bonding experience, and I have enjoyed all of my couple, family and girls’ trips, but one thing I have never done is travel alone. The subject intrigued me after we profiled successful solo traveler and blogger Alyssa Ramos from mylifesatravelmovie.com, who shares her journeys through spectacular locales on her gorgeous Instagram account. In this issue, we bring you six destinations worthy of solo travel—one courtesy of Ramos—so you can explore and unwind without dealing with distractions or having to coordinate with others.

It’s no surprise to me that affluent magazine readers are the most frequent travelers. According to the Association of Magazine Media, within the last year, magazine readers took more trips for business and pleasure, embarked on more domestic and international vacations, owned more personal leisure watercraft, went on more cruises and rented more cars than consumers of any other medium, including the internet, TV, radio and mobile apps.

This survey also noted that this demographic is most likely to vacation in Asia, Africa, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe and Florida.

Affluent travelers trust print journalism more than online and social media platforms, and we’re proud to have earned that same trust from you, our loyal readers.

South Beach Wine & Food Festival Returns To Palm Beach County After a successful inauguration in Palm Beach County last year, the renowned Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival (SOBEWFF) will host two events in Palm Beach as part of its 2020 lineup.

On Feb. 20, Martha Stewart will join James Beard Award semi-finalist and Palm Beach County resident chef Clay Conley and James Beard Award finalist chef Katie Button at Buccan for a night of fresh, vibrant dishes. The trio will combine traditional American flavors with authentic cuisine from Spain, accompanied by wine from from the Neyers wines portfolio.

W

hen designing a coastal home complete with pieces that can brave tropical weather, look no further than Serena & Lily in Palm Beach. The storefront off North County Road marks the brand’s first location in the state and offers seaside furnishings curated specifically for South Florida, with customizable options available to suit any abode.

The Serena & Lily team looked for the perfect Florida outpost for two years, searching throughout Naples, Miami and West Palm Beach before landing on its current locale. Many factors contributed to this decision, notes Design Shop leader An Barz, including diversity of clients, the building itself and the fact that Palm Beach is always transitioning. The island’s coastal-chic vibe was also a huge influence.

“The spirit of Palm Beach aligned with Serena & Lily,” Barz says. “It is so much like [that of] California, where the store originated.”

The bright and airy shop sports an art deco façade that is original to the building. At the entrance, an art piece

by Serena Dugan, half of Serena & Lily, hangs above an all-weather white- and blue-themed outdoor living 30

room. Numerous furniture vignettes look as if they were pulled straight from a luxury beach house, with each outfitted with items ideal for Palm Beach, some exclusively on display at this location.

Given Serena & Lily’s California origins, the creatives behind the coastal brand wanted to set this store apart with a distinctive Palm Beach feel. They achieved this through pineapple details in the wallpaper and pillows, sea coral décor and art commissioned from local artists.

Namely a space for home furniture, the store also acts as a gallery where each piece is for sale.

Natural materials are used wherever possible, from bleached coconut chandeliers and natural fiber rugs to rattan and bamboo furniture sourced from small villages.

For its rattan items, Serena & Lily works with artisans who are experts at harvesting, sorting, shaping and weaving the material.

“We support the craftsmen of small villages,” Barz says. “The least we can do is give back to them.”

In-house designers are at the ready to help those in need of decorating assistance. They’re available to aid in every step of the interior design process, starting with creating a mood board and continuing through to home visits to complete the project.

The store’s Design Center also allows clients to personalize their furniture down to the fabric, with most choosing a performance option that can stand up to busy family life. Customers can further customize with wood swatches and wall coverings, all with a beachy theme.

In the Fast Lane This March, Oliver Askew will compete in his first IndyCar race of the season, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

A

few years into Oliver Askew’s racing career, he skidded toward retirement. The sport had become too expensive for Askew’s family; after selling their boat and taking out a second mortgage on their home, they couldn’t afford to support their son much longer. That’s when he got picked up by the world-recognized Ocala Gran Prix (OGP) team, which would drive his racing career to places he could only dream of.

“Racing is one of the most expensive sports,” Askew says. “Once I joined OGP, I started racing nationally, qualifying for championships and meeting world-class professional drivers. It completely transformed my career.”

A little over a decade later, Askew, 23, signed to Arrow McLaren SP’s 2020 driver line-up after winning the championship title in the 2019 Indy Lights series, which earned him a $1.1 million scholarship for this year and guaranteed him entry in the Indy 500 and two other IndyCar races. In March, Askew will take to the road for his first race of the season, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

“My goal for the last decade has been to become an IndyCar driver,” Askew says.

“Now I’ll be a rookie next season, which means I have to come up with a few more goals. Of course, I want to win a race, which would be a huge accomplishment. This racing series is probably the most competitive in the world.”

Born in Melbourne, Florida, and raised in Jupiter, Askew started racing when he

was 7 years old after his father gifted him an afternoon of go-karting at the Palm Beach International Raceway.

“Racing doesn’t run in the family,” Askew says. “My dad thought it could be a fun father-son bonding activity. None of us knew it would lead to this, but my parents have been completely supportive ever since. They know how rare it is to find your passion at such a young age.”

About a year later, Askew started racing regionally and slowly progressed through

local ranks. After he was picked up by OGP, Askew won numerous races and accolades, including a $200,000 Road to Indy scholarship, which earned him a ride in the 2017 USF2000 Championship.

“You know, I’ve been asked for advice before,” Askew says. “I got a late start into racing. I didn’t throw myself out there and get people to notice me until I was a bit older.

It’s important for drivers to be well-rounded and approachable. It’s as much about how you present yourself on the track and off.”

An Organic Transformation

Soraya Thornton marked her third career change as the designer of La Costa Organic Jewelry.

S

oraya Thornton never imagined she would become a successful jewelry designer—let alone at age 50. Earlier in her life, she pursued a career in computer hardware and software sales, a professional path that required extensive travel and long hours. Things changed after Thornton got married, had two kids, and shifted into a role as a teacher at her children’s school. It was there that Thornton discovered jewelry making.

“I honestly just fell into it,” the now 57-yearold Jupiter local says. “I started working with crystals and beads, and people started to take to my designs. I got an inkling that this could transform into something.”

After designing jewelry part-time, Thornton left teaching behind to launch her company. By her 50th birthday, Thornton marked her third career move—as the owner of La Costa Organic Jewelry. In this role, Thornton and her team strive to make women feel beautiful with handcrafted natural gemstone and crystal jewelry.

“My birthday was when we launched the brand as it is today,” she explains. “We’ve evolved quite a bit since then, but the whole focus has always been offering something different in the jewelry world.”

In the last seven years, La Costa has established itself as a jewelry leader in a crowded and competitive industry. Thornton’s collection is a staple at luxury resorts, including Mar-A-Lago, Eau Palm Beach Resort & Spa, Ritz-Carlton and Biltmore as well as upscale boutiques and art galleries throughout the continental U.S., Caribbean and Hawaii.

From rings and necklaces to bracelets and earrings, La Costa collaborates with master jewelers in Italy and Turkey, who hand-cut the gemstones and crystals and meticulously place the materials within each piece. Every item

starts with a custom design by Thornton and takes a few months to produce. The La Costa collection is broken down into casual, chic and glamorous categories, ranging in price from $60 to $1,000, depending on the style and stone.

“We use no chemicals, heat or color treatments,” she explains of the design process.

“Everything is all-natural, and every item is one of a kind because no two stones are ever quite the same. When people see our items, they often think it’s all fine jewelry because of the brilliance, but it’s actually an entirely natural stone concept.”

Through La Costa, Thornton has also given back to the community by donating 10 percent of profits to charities. To date, the company has contributed $200,000 to various local and national nonprofits benefitting cancer research and family services.

“This started as [my own] initiative,” Thornton says. “But now we have about 25 people within the organization. Today I’m focused on both the company and those who make what we do possible. We aim to create jewelry that women can wear anytime and anywhere to feel their best, while also doing good for the community.”

hether you’ve traveled to Italy once or a dozen times, there’s one city jet-setters always yearn to revisit: Florence. Known for fashion, the Renaissance and Tuscan ambrosial wines, Florence was also home to Salvatore Ferragamo, one of Italy’s most legendary shoe designers. Dubbed by the elite as the “shoemaker to the stars,” his clients included the likes of Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren.

The Ferragamo family extended their empire to the first fashionbranded hotel company, the Lungarno Collection, which boasts four properties sprinkled between Florence and Rome, with another arriving this summer in Milan. Each has its own ambiance, so there’s something to suit all tastes.

This past winter, I toured the three properties in Florence and was in for a treat. A favorite is the newly renovated flagship, Hotel Lungarno, originally a restoration of a 16th-century grand residence. Its interior reflects a nautical theme of blue and white décor, complete with balconies that overlook the famed Arno River. For romance and whimsy, the Continentale is a lovely choice. Here, tent-like sheer curtains surround guest beds, and desks resemble leather steamer trunks of a bygone era with contemporary touches. This exclusive hideaway is tucked inside in the medieval Consorti Tower—one of the few left after World War II—near the Ponte Vecchio. At the top of the tower is La Terrazza, a rooftop bar with amazing 360-degree views of a few of Florence’s most famous sites including Palazzo Vecchio and Brunelleschi’s Duomo.

Portrait Firenze offers a whole different experience. At this all-suite, five-star property, I was treated with white-glove service, as well as a touch of familiarity as if this were my very own Florentine residence. Located in the heart of the city, this boutique hotel reflects the glamorous times of the ’40s and ’50s, with black-and-white portraits in every room and offers river-view suites looking out to Palazzo Pitti.

With each stay, I was able to experience the spirit of Florence. While enjoying the last evening of my trip, I sat in the Picteau Cocktail Bar sipping on a White Duke Negroni.

Still, learning about the materials in our jeans isn’t as easy as looking at food labels for ingredients. Take, for example, conventional cotton, which requires 5,283 gallons of water to produce just more than 2 pounds, and often requires the use of toxic synthetic chemicals including silicone waxes, petroleum scours, softeners, heavy metals, flame retardants, ammonia and formaldehyde.

This is why Delray Beach–based designer Amanda Perna advocates supporting local brands that are capable of having more intimate relationships with their shoppers in order to share details about their processes. “The good thing about being small is we have the ability to do more sustainable things and make changes quicker than some of the bigger brands because there aren’t as many layers to peel back to get things done,” she says.

Six years ago when she launched The House of Perna, the entrepreneur was admittedly ahead of the curve. Perna, who appeared on two seasons of “Project Runway,” created her eco-conscious business as somewhat of a happy accident—by doing small-batch product runs using fabrics larger companies had tossed out.

“In creating the brand, I didn’t want it to be something where I had millions of units sitting in a warehouse or trying to deal with going and manufacturing everything overseas,” she says. “I wanted everything to be made locally; I wanted it to be supporting our local business.”

From her studio inside the Arts Warehouse in downtown Delray Beach, Perna continues to make conscious efforts to minimize her footprint, including crafting her handbags using fallen palm leaves that would have been discarded otherwise. “We always laugh that, yeah, you could put your bag in a compost because it’s leather and palm trees,” she says.

“We’ve had pushback from people saying, ‘Oh your bags are too expensive, I can get this cheaper somewhere else,’” she says. “All of our artisans are paid fairly; we’re really trying to keep it as affordable as possible, but with everyone being treated fairly in the process.”

Perna admits staying ethical and competitive can be a challenge, especially because consumers of fast fashion (cheap and trendy attire) have forgotten that clothing and accessories have value.

To help remedy this mindset, Perna designs her bags to be “seasonless.”

“If there’s something that you love and it’s from one collection, you don’t feel like you have something that’s old and outdated,” she says. “So it kind of eliminates the need for people to replace things as quickly.”

Still, Perna can relate to the consumers who are yearning for fresh pieces.

“When you take a lot of pictures, or for me, I have a ton of events to go to all the time, you kind of can’t wear the same thing every day,” she admits. “But I think it’s about creating a collection of clothing that you love, and that you’re proud of, and that you’re happy to mix and match. We have some customers who will buy a capsule of our things, so they’ll buy five or six pieces they can interchange with each other.”

Perna is also a collector of consignment pieces, noting that the way garments used to be made still has an advantage.

“I think there’s something so fabulous about the story behind every piece,” she says. “I think it’s fascinating, and I think there’s something to be said about the way things were constructed in the past—before all of this fast fashion. The finishings on some of these pieces you just don’t find anymore.”

hen you’re looking for a sophisticated getaway to take all on your own, there’s nowhere better to touch down than Londontown. In my opinion, London is one of the few places in the world where everyone, regardless of where they’re from, can feel right at home. If you’ve never been before, spend your days seeing the sights. Get your culture fix by touring Buckingham Palace and the Tate Modern Museum; strolling through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park; taking a boat ride down the River Thames; visiting Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus; shopping on Oxford and Regent Streets; or hopping on the London Eye to get a bird’s-eye view of the English capital.

At night, see “Wicked”—it’s been playing at the Apollo Theater since it first opened in London in 2006—or go a little more traditional and catch a Shakespeare classic at the Globe. With so much to do and see in London, you’ll need to stop for some hearty food and drinks in between. Have afternoon tea at the iconic Harrods’ Tea Room; dig into spicy Indian food at Dishoom; pop into pretty much any pub for classic English comfort food like shepherd’s pie or fish and chips; and order a gin martini at Connaught Bar, which makes its own handcrafted gin and was voted No. 2 on “The World’s 50 Best Bars” list in 2019. exico may get a bad rap in the media, and while some stretches are heavier in terms of crime and corruption, the capital city is one of the safer to visit—especially for women. On a recent trip, I hopscotched my way from one buzzy bar to the next, exploring some of the more-talked-about restaurants popping up around town. I dined solo for lunch at the counter of Amaya, where chef Jaír Téllez brings a taste of his Baja flagship—and family’s natural Bichi wines—to the industrial-style space in the Colonia Juárez neighborhood, where 19th century French mansions are opening up to some of the city’s coolest bars and cafes. In the Art Nouveau–heavy area of Roma Norte, I sat on the open-air rooftop restaurant of husbandand-wife-run Meroma, set in a Modernist mansion that served as a family home until the 1980s. The former servants’ quarters and laundry room have been transformed into a glass-encased rooftop restaurant with Mid-Century Modern lighting and a 16-seat terrace under the stars. In the well-heeled neighborhood of Polanco, home to Peruvian designer Sandra Weil’s flagship, I sampled escamoles, or ant larvae (considered the caviar of Mexico), at tasting menu hotspot Quintonil, where chef Jorge Vallejo is helping drive the conversation on Mexican cuisine.

“What is happening in gastronomy here is spectacular,” says 11th generation tequila maker Juan Domingo Beckmann, CEO of Jose Cuervo and creator of Maestro Dobel tequila. “We have so many incredible chefs bringing their talent to the table and reinventing Mexican cuisine. I’m so impressed with the ways they are paying homage to Mexican traditions by taking our ingredients and flavors to a whole new level.”

Stay near Polanco on the city’s main tree-lined avenue, Paseo de la Reforma, at the 240-room Four Seasons Mexico City. Fresh off a $14 million renovation, the hacienda-style hotel unfolds around a beautifully manicured courtyard (you’ll definitely want to linger here over breakfast), making it truly feel like an oasis in the center of a

If fermented yeast is your passion, then Dublin’s your Huckleberry, but there’s much more to do here than tap your inner zythophile. In fact, Ireland’s cultural and cosmopolitan capital is better described as a bucket-list destination, steeped in rich literary and political history and dotted with majestic churches, museums and libraries fronted by jaw-dropping architecture. Recently ranked as one of the 10 most livable cities for Europeans, Dublin is also a haven for holidaying singles. One of the best ways to explore the Instagrammable surrounds and cultural treasures, including the ancient Book of Kells housed inside the Trinity College Library and the venerable Natural History Museum locals have dubbed “the Dead Zoo,” is by hiring a private guide or joining a small group tour (Little Gem Tours and Tours By Locals are good picks). Traveling in likeminded company has additional perks, such as adding to or altering pre-set itineraries, which might mean taking a detour to the eclectic Temple Bar district to visit Darkey Kelly’s Bar & Restaurant, or swapping a bus ride for a leisurely boat cruise along the River Liffey, an idyllic waterway that carves a path through the city’s center.

While finding a hotel room sans a single supplement can be challenging, a posh perch is not. The Shelbourne is my personal favorite.

Suffused with old-world glamour, this 200-year-old property overlooks St. Stephen’s Green and counts royals and world leaders among its guests. If time allows, snag a corner table downstairs in The Lord Mayor’s Lounge for an hour of people watching and treat yourself to a classic glass of Champagne or afternoon tea featuring wow-worthy comestibles served on fine china.

aster Island might sound like a far-fetched destination to dub as one of my top recommended places for solo female travelers, but I’ve been to more than 100 countries solo and Easter Island was by far one of my favorite places.

It’s admittedly not easy or convenient to get to, as it is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but once you get there, it’s like stepping into a Nat Geo documentary. The island is tiny, so it’s extremely easy to navigate on your own by renting a car, or you can even join a tour if you don’t want to go alone. People are very friendly there (but you may want to brush up on your Spanish) and also more than happy to tell you about their history. Once you see what the local Rapa Nuis look like, you definitely won’t regret being there solo. There are a few hotels, even a couple really nice ones, but Airbnb is the easiest and most affordable option.

Alyssa’s Tips On traveling solo: If for some reason you feel super uncomfortable, or as if someone is following you, my go-to is to immediately start pretending to talk on my phone, and act as if I’m meeting someone nearby. I’ll even say “Do you see me? Oh yeah! OK, I’ll start heading to you!”

Her favorite travel app: Skyscanner for flights because it has a really awesome “flexible” tool. For years I’ve decided my next destination based on what comes up as the cheapest flight when I put “anywhere” as my destination. I call this “Flight Roulette.”

T

he bartender at the Country Club Lima Hotel’s English Bar shook a pisco sour and slid the frothy beverage in front of me. At first sip, it was clear that of all of the reasons to travel to Lima, Peru, pisco sours should be high on the list. So should ceviche, causa and lomo saltado. Although solo travel to South America can be daunting for women, that wouldn’t deter me from taking a five-hour flight from South Florida to indulge in authentic Peruvian dishes.

Lima felt as safe as any massive city, meaning you have to be aware of your surroundings and do your research in advance. Of the 43 districts in Lima, I spent most of my visit in Barranco, an artsy neighborhood set along the Pacific Coast with similarities to Miami’s Wynwood. Urban murals decorate the outsides of most buildings, which house hip bars and coffee shops, and sometimes hide those hole-in-the-wall food stalls that serve some of the best leche de tigre in town, like Canta Ranita. North of Barranco is Miraflores, an upscale district with attractions including a pre-Inca mud-brick temple called the Huaca Pucllana, and the iconic sculpture El Beso, which depicts artist Victor Delfín kissing his wife. There’s also the opportunity to go paragliding off of Miraflores’ cliffs. On most days, the sky is filled with colorful kites holding brave passengers.

While those who’ve flown above have undoubtedly witnessed the best views in Lima, a close second might belong to guests at Cala (set between Barranco and Miraflores). The outside balcony offers waterfront views and the acoustic sounds of waves lapping the rocky beach below.

Alyssa’s Tips On traveling solo: Join a Facebook group for American expats in the country you’re visiting. The people living there will offer better insider knowledge than a Yelp page; you’ll get some intel on places to avoid and the overall social climate; and you might even find someone willing to take you around town.

It was exactly the kind of experience to be expected from one of the fashion capitals of the world.

In addition to beautifully appointed rooms, the hotel has a rooftop that is among the best places to enjoy aperitivos and take in views of the Milan skyline.

As a woman who loves fashion, a solo trip to the Armani Silos exhibition space is still among my favorite outings. The breathtaking structure houses Giorgio Armani’s creations from 1980 to the present. It includes 400 outfits and 200 accessories over 40 years. After visiting the exhibit I was reminded that many of the world’s most renowned designers are Italian: Versace, Zanotti and Ferragamo, to name a few. There is no shortage of places to shop in Milan either.

Italian leather shoes and handbags are designed with an attention to detail impossible to pass up.

Travel to Milan alone, and you’ll have a love affair with the city.

Eliza’s Tips On traveling solo: There are parts in Los Angeles (where I live) where I wouldn’t want to be alone at night. I try to keep this in mind when I’m traveling. I have to remind myself to be aware of my surroundings in areas that seem questionable.

any redesigns begin with the simple idea of removing a wall to create a more open floor plan or sprucing up a specific room. That was the case when the owners of a two-story home in Jupiter asked designer Lisa Lalaounis of The Decorators Unlimited in Palm Beach Gardens to update their kitchen. The project soon evolved into revamping their entire 8,000-square-foot, fourbedroom, six-bath house. The owners, Dan Reedy of Onshore

Construction and his wife, Missy, wanted the traditional home to have a more modern, but not necessarily contemporary, look. Lalaounis set out to establish a fresh, transitional aesthetic that will be stylish for years to come.

A graduate of the International Academy of Design & Technology in Tampa, Lalaounis has been creating beautiful interiors for 25 years. “I’ve always loved the fine arts, and I wanted to marry my passion for them with a career,” she says.

GETTING STARTED To make the exterior walls work better with a new roof, Lalaounis changed the paint color from red to white and put doors with opaque glass panels bordered with bronze-finished metal on the quadruple garage. Inside, she chose a white, cream, beige and linen color palette. “I wanted a classic feel for longevity, and I also wanted it to be very comfortable and inviting,� she says.

KITCHEN & SUMMER KITCHEN In the kitchen, ceiling beams match those in the dining room. A large freezer and refrigerator are on one wall; an adjacent wall houses two ovens. Walnut paneling clads the kitchen walls, and a loadbearing column is disguised with lighted shelving to look like an architectural feature. A peninsula with a waterfall edge that matches the ceiling beams is topped with white-veined black quartzite, and a light bridge attached to the ceiling illuminates the workspace. To create both continuity and drama, Lalaounis installed a large black quartzite wall panel above the range. Lining the top of the wall are walnut-fronted storage cabinets—designed by Juan Beraldi of Artistry Fine Woodwork—without telltale pulls to identify them.

“It’s a really clean look,” Lalaounis says. A walnut island containing a microwave drawer and a corner sink is crowned with more black quartzite; stools have white cushions that contrast strikingly with washed gray maple frames and gray cane backs.

To establish a breakfast room, the designer decided to enclose part of the patio. A round oak table with a taupe finish seats four; chairs have curved oak legs and rail pullouts to avoid fingerprints on the white upholstered backs. The circular chandelier with crystal cylinders similar to fixtures in the dining room and foyer hangs from a polished-nickel medallion. A sideboard with a taupe oak base and a top shelf supported by metal legs is set against a wall with a TV screen above.

In the adjoining summer kitchen, the floor is covered with largescale gray concrete porcelain tile. Complementing the floor is the gray concrete top of the dining table. Swivel chairs with gray alumi-

num frames have thick gray and white cushions. There’s a large grill, and glassfronted cabinets offer display space. The dramatic backsplash and countertop are made from Calcatta porcelain slabs.

These, as well as the countertops in the kitchen proper, as well as other areas in the home, were fabricated by Frank Laflamme of Accurate Tile and Marble.

A separate seating area features two aluminum-framed, deep-seating sofas and two recliners. Twin spherical chandeliers with iron frames and casually elegant interior candelabras light the space.

The media room is an ideal gathering place.

ENTERTAINMENT The media room is a perfect place for watching a movie, shooting pool or enjoying a beverage. Taupe and beige grass cloth covers the walls, and Venetian plaster adds interest to the ceiling. Tiered seats are covered in dark brown leather, while a gray maple bar behind them is raised enough so the screen is still easily visible. Stools are taupe leather with polished chrome bases. A pool table sits in the middle of the space.

For more active recreation, Lalaounis transformed one of the garage bays into a golf-simulation space. Players can feel as if they’re practicing their drives on top courses, while a dark granite bar serves as a stylish 19th hole.

MASTER SUITE In the master bedroom, wood flooring laid in a herringbone pattern similar to that in the foyer is the backdrop for a dramatic bed wall paneled in walnut and accented with vertical LED strips. The headboard, which runs across the wall beyond the bed itself, is upholstered in mocha chenille velvet, as is the bed frame. At the foot is a bench covered in playful leopard-patterned chenille. “I wanted to have some fun, and I fell in love with the fabric,” Lalaounis says.

A ring-shaped, fractured-glass chandelier with polished-nickel accents hangs from the ceiling, and cylindershaped crackled glass pendants are suspended on both sides of the bed. A recessed seating area features two polished-chrome chaises with faux-mink cushions.

A reflective mirror film provides privacy on double-glass doors framed in bronze that open to a hallway leading to the master bath. It features a freestanding soaking tub and a large shower with a frameless glass door. Onyx porcelain tile covers the floor and countertops, while a floating shelf provides storage for linens.

FRESH YET CLASSIC Wood, crystal and metals provide a classic look in this home, while a more open floor plan, fresh finishes and stylish new furnishings create living spaces that will bring joy for years to come.

When did you move to Jupiter and enter into the real estate business?

A:

I moved to Jupiter from Long Island, New York 26 years ago with my three young children and my husband, Bill. We were living in a rural setting. A blizzard almost prevented us from making it our barn to feed the horses. We decided that we’d had enough of the cold and ice. I have always loved quiet country living, and Jupiter matched the description. Alternate A1A was a two lane north-south road, and I-95 ended at Indiantown Road. There were cows, turtles and goats wandering into the roadways from the MacArthur farmland where the newer country clubs are now built. Oh my, what a change through the years!

Q: What’s your favorite or most important thing about family?

A:

Family is everything to me. I am blessed with three beautiful children, two of which are married.

Recently, two grandchildren have joined the ranks.

Spending holidays and vacations together gives us less distracted quality time. Florida’s warmer climate also provided a healthier lifestyle for my family. We can partake in outdoor sports and beach activities 12 months a year.

Q: How long have you been selling real estate in PBC? A: I have been selling real estate in Palm Beach County

for over 20 years. I like personal interaction and being self-employed. Every day is a weekday because it’s a daily profession, 7 days a week. Your clients come to you because you are their trusted advisor.

Q: Where do you primarily focus your business?

A: I primarily focus my business from Palm Beach

Gardens through Jupiter Island. I like the different special vibe that each area offers. My passion is to have intricate knowledge of all the areas, which allows me to be a true real estate expert.

Q: What is your specialty? Tell us all things real estate.

A: I am a luxury home and country club specialist. I par-

ticipate as both a listing and selling agent. Creative marketing is a key element to my approach. My college and graduate school background in psychology and education compliments what comes naturally to me: making people feel comfortable and confident, and trust in my expertise. Connecting buyers with their dream homes and helping sellers move on is a wonderful feeling. Referrals are the best compliment.

work, marketing, math, law and ethics, as well as knowledge of areas, developments and school systems. Buyers depend on us for their assets being invested properly. Sellers rely on us to get them the best price for their home in a timely fashion.

I have no regrets at all. I get up every morning excited about what the day brings. It is a rewarding career because I am self-motivating, hardworking and enjoy networking with people. When last-minute issues come up, I am a stable presence and a problem solver. I admire and respect my family for supporting me as I evolved into one of the most successful realtors in Palm Beach County. It did take away from family time.

What lessons have you learned?

Be true to yourself so you can be true to others. Listen to your clients’ needs and desires. There have been many challenges and changes in real estate in the last 20 years. Always be ethical, honest, truthful and moral. Real estate is not a glamorous profession like it’s sometimes shown on TV or movies. It is a serious career and profession.

Any advice for sellers/buyers coming into the area?

Most importantly, hire an experienced realtor with a proven track record. Buyers should learn about the areas and spend time in those areas. They should decide what their specific needs are. The town you like will dictate the type of home an individual or family buys. Sellers should understand the marketplace. Educate oneself first. Every individual is unique and has different priorities that will influence their choice.

What do you love most about real estate?

What I love most about real estate is meeting people. I get satisfaction when buyers are excited about their purchase and sellers are ecstatic about the sale of their home in a timely manner. Most clients become good friends. I get great pleasure getting to know people and their families and socializing with them.

The sunrise is so spiritual and the sunset is so calming.

Q: What hobbies and charitable organizations are you passionate about?

A: I am a dog lover. I participate in dog rescue or-

ganizations. And yes, I do take some of the dogs home. It gives me pleasure to look into their eyes.

All they want to do is comfort and support you. We have the best dog-friendly beaches in Jupiter! I also have a calling to work with the education of children abroad. I have recently come back from Uganda and participating in helping their culture grow. There is so much poverty in the world. I am blessed and want to give back to this cause. Education, love and support are the best gifts a child can receive.

Q: What is your favorite “hangout spot”?

A: After the late hours in my office, I enjoy meeting

my husband to unwind at the amazing restaurants in this area. The choices are plentiful. The fish is so fresh coming from our local waters. I enjoy outside dining at the waterfront.

We are a family 24/7. The administrators, owners, and other agents are all there to support one another. The company marketing is strong. Being a Christies and Luxury Portfolio International Affiliate is very advantageous to my marketing and sales audience worldwide.

Q: What do you think about the future of real estate?

A: The real estate market will continue to be strong be-

cause of the population growth. Florida is one of the top 10 states for business and job growth due to tax savings. The market has been attracting international as well as national homebuyers because investing in South Florida has been lucrative. Florida is, after all, the “Sunshine State.”

There’s an indoor bar and a lowerlit, intimate dining area, but we recommend a seat next to the open kitchen that buzzes with activity. Watch as fresh macaroni pops from its machine, fire dances in the woodburning pizza oven and dish after dish appears at the counter, each more colorful and aromatic than the last.

Owned and created by world-renowned chef Laurent Tourondel, Scusi has an afterwork, beach-casual vibe with fine-dining, mouth-watering morsels. It’s a delightful combination that allows for easy conversation and a relaxed atmosphere without sacrificing the most important aspect of any restaurant: the cuisine.

“It’s a homey restaurant, not too fancy,” Tourondel says. “I love the area of Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens. It’s a great area, beautiful.”

Outside, guests can choose between tables hidden under white-andblue-striped umbrellas or a bar with heaters for chillier Florida evenings.

“[The restaurant] is very coastal by the looks, by the way the dishes are designed,” Tourondel says. “There’s a variety of dishes…

You can come to eat at Scusi three times a week, and you’ll be fine.”

The veal and pork meatballs and burrata are a great way to start. The meatballs are tender and expertly seasoned, while the fresh burrata bursts onto its bed of chilled arrabbiata, cherry tomatoes, basil and filone, a classic yeast bread.

For the mains, Italian staples of pasta and pizza are a necessity. Each pizza is created Neapolitan-style with a thin crust and a little char. Mamma Mia, the Margherita pizza, is a must-try.

The pasta is made fresh daily, and it shows through its taste and incredible texture. Options range from a succulent spaghetti to a spicy bucatini lobster “fra diavolo.” Carb-cutters will find that Scusi offers a delectable selection of fish and filets.

For dessert, classic gelato or sorbetti won’t disappoint, but opt for one of the featured creations such as the lemon ricotta gelato served on a slice of watermelon with mint, lime zest, grapefruit, melon and honey.

Chocolate and coffee lovers will enjoy the Scusiramisu—a decadent play on the classic Italian dessert of chocolate gianduja and mascarpone, espresso speculoos, banana, cinnamon and dulce de leche.

Something that most people don’t realize about making a living on the PGA Tour is:

each player is in charge of their travel, accommodations, caddie and more. Players now travel with teams of coaches, therapists and even nutritionists. Most players pay a percentage of their winnings to their caddie, trainer and sometimes an agent.

The most intimidating person I’ve ever been on a golf course with was: Ray Floyd.

I’ve played with Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods. All of them have been No. 1 players in the world. But as a young player in the mid-1980s, I played with four-time Major Champion Ray Floyd at the Westchester Classic.

On the 13th tee, I had the honor, but movement in the gallery caused me to step away not once but twice.

After backing off the second time Ray barked at me [to play golf]. That was intimidating!

The most nerve-racking moment of my entire golfing career was: when I was a

19-year-old amateur in 1981. I’d been fortunate to qualify for the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in

Philadelphia. We were right behind Arnold Palmer and Johnny Miller, and right in front of Jack Nicklaus and reigning U.S. Amateur Champion Hal Sutton.

As I was going through my routine, Jack Nicklaus made his way onto the first tee area. As a 19-year-old, floppy-wristed flat-belly from Rhode Island, I couldn’t imagine ever having been as nervous as I was in that exact moment. (Footnote: I birdied the first two holes to tie for the lead!)

Of the tens of thousands of rounds of golf I’ve played throughout my lifetime, the most satisfying was: in 1995 at the PGA

Championship at Riviera. I was paired with two-time Masters Champion José María Olazábal. What made the round so meaningful was it was the last event to qualify for the Ryder Cup team that fall. I was outside of the top 10 automatic berths and needed a spark that final day. On the par-five I made a 20-foot putt for eagle. My first nine score of 28 still stands as a competitive record in a Major, and I finished with an 8 under par 63 to make the U.S. Ryder Cup Team and represent my country a few months later.

PALM HEALTH FOUNDATION AND ALPERT JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE ‘NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM’ THE CAUSE: Palm Health Foundation together with Alpert Jewish Family Service hosted 130 guests during its “Night at the Museum” at the Norton Museum of Art. The event put a spotlight on the need for Mental Health First Aid funding.

JEWISH FEDERATION OF PALM BEACH COUNTY’S ISRAEL PROGRAM CENTER ‘TASTE OF ISRAEL’ THE CAUSE: More than 100 guests joined the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County’s Israel Program Center for “Taste of Israel.”

The event at the Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery included Israeli wine and food as well as the international photographic exhibition “Humans of Tel Aviv” by Israeli artist and photographer Erez Kaganovitz.
