Enjoy the music of Symphony of the Americas Summerfest this summer! Celebrating its 32nd anniversary season, and a designated Major Cultural Institution in South Florida’s Broward County, the Symphony of the Americas is the Broward Center for the Performing Arts performance partner and annually presents internationally acclaimed guest artists from around the globe. Refreshing ocean breezes–depicted by the famous French artist DUAIV–are the perfect accompaniment to the Symphony’s acclaimed music festival with one month of performances throughout Florida and the Americas in July and August, including its BCPA performance on July 19th. Summerfest traditionally features musicians and soloists from acclaimed orchestras throughout Europe, including Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, Opera Orchestra of Bulgaria, Mission Symphony Orchestra of Switzerland, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and others, performing several styles of classical and popular music for strings and all joined in a cultural exchange by principal musicians of South Florida’s own Symphony of the Americas. Presented in association with Europe’s Musicfor, the festival aligns with their international mission of donating musical instruments to work with young students. Over 10 different countries are represented on the Summerfest stage.
Nourish your artistic soul under the baton of Artistic Director Maestro James Brooks-Bruzzese, in the music of Hubert Parry, Vivaldi, Humperdinck, Beethoven, Tartini, Dvorak, Mozart and tangos of Piazzolla. Soloists are Angelo di Veroli, marimba~Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, Italy; Symphony of the Americas Principal Trumpet~Claudio Osorio; Glenn Basham~Concertmaster of Naples Philharmonic, acclaimed international organist Tim Brumfield and Quartetto Orfeo, of Rome.

An Expert in
ORTHOPEDICS JONATHAN LEVY, M.D. Jonathan Levy, M.D. is a shoulder specialist at Holy Cross Orthopedic Institute in Fort Lauderdale and has been Chief of Orthopedic Surgery since 2010. He was the first South Florida Active member of the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society. Dr. Levy is now the second highest volume shoulder replacement surgeon in the country, performing over to 300 shoulder replacements each year. He has published close to 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals on shoulder surgery. He lectures at national and international meetings, routinely trains surgeons on shoulder surgery, and has helped to design several of the latest shoulder replacement implants.
Q
My 60 year-old husband has been complaining of deep shoulder pain that has worsened over the past year. I can even hear his shoulder grinding! Each night he struggles to sleep, and it has become increasingly difficult for him to perform tasks like getting dressed. Could he be suffering from osteoarthritis of the shoulder?

X-rays are the easiest–and most effective–way to diagnose osteoarthritis of the shoulder, a condition in which patients experience symptoms such as pain, stiffness, catching and grinding in the shoulder or surrounding areas. If X-rays reveal shoulder arthritis, initial treatment will typically include taking anti-inflammatory (i.e. ibuprofen) and pain medications (i.e. acetaminophen), modifying activities to avoid excessive impact on the shoulder, stretching gently and using ice. As arthritis progresses, injections of cortisone placed into the shoulder joint can help control inflammation and reduce pain. When arthritis of the shoulder becomes end stage–“boneon-bone”–surgery becomes an option. Arthroscopic surgery to “clean out” an arthritic shoulder has produced unreliable results. While some patients improve, others do not. The most reliable procedure for improving pain and restoring shoulder function is a Total Shoulder Replacement. This procedure replaces the arthritic joint with an artificial metalon-plastic joint. You will know you are ready for a shoulder replacement when shoulder pain and loss of function significantly affect the quality of your life. Remarkably, the pain following total shoulder replacement is typically short-lived. Most patients require pain medication only for the first few days after surgery. To achieve optimal results, seek a surgeon who has performed a high volume of shoulder replacement surgeries. Studies show that experienced surgeons typically achieve 90 to 95 percent success with their patients and have better results than those who perform the occasional shoulder replacement. Most orthopedic surgeons perform between 5-10 shoulder replacements each year. Fortunately, shoulder replacement surgery is safe, and in many cases is now routinely performed as an outpatient procedure!

his issue includes sections of our third issue of our new Florida Home and Garden magazine. That magazine, of course, includes additional editorial and is separately distributed as a free-standing magazine. Design magazines are one of the few categories that continue to grow as print generally declines in an age of digital media. This issue illustrates why—the spectacular photos of imposing residences show to good advantage in the large magazine format. Often we are left wondering who owns these impressive homes. They tend to be rather used, often with interesting histories. It is not unusual for owners to remain in the background; they don’t need publicity. This month, however, several owners with unusual business success are revealed. There is also a previous quite dead past owner mentioned, but only because his name is Al Capone. We all know that mob figures lived openly in South Florida for decades, largely unmolested by authorities as long as they regarded our turf as “open,” meaning they refrained from organizing rackets and killing people. Some were even covered on the social scene; their favorite hangouts attracted tourists. No good thing lasts forever, and organized crime’s freedom in Florida ended in the 1980s when the Philly mob decided to go public. The notorious Nicky Scarfo gang, which had enjoyed a growth spurt when casino gambling came to nearby Atlantic City, decided to come to Florida. Prior to Scarfo, the Philly mob had earned the nickname “The Nicest Family” for its lack of violence. That changed when the previous boss was blown up on his South Philly porch. There is a real estate angle to this story. The Philly mob was not discrete. Florida organized crime units were well aware of their move. They might as well have worn T-shirts saying ‘Philly Mob’ when they got off the plane, said a de-

SUMMER 2019
tective assigned to track them at the time. They were all fit young Italian guys, and they told people they were the Philly mob and were taking over. Half the time the bartenders they talked to were police women, he noted. When they were busted it was a big story in the north; dozens of mobsters went down, but not so much here where the actual investigation took place. It turned out the house the wise guys operated out of in Fort Lauderdale’s Middle River section was listed in the name of a former associate of this magazine. He was a lovable scoundrel, the middle man when we bought it in 1970. Of course, he cheated us, which led to a few years of frantic fund raising just to pay off the previous owners. He rarely paid a bill unless sued. His desk was piled high with legal papers. A man heard that I knew him and asked why he was still alive. The standard answer: “He never holds it against you after he screws you.” We also joked that this man was a “deal addict.” If you wanted to sell something, he would buy it whether he had the money to pay for it or not; and if you wanted to buy something, he would sell it to you whether he owned it or not. *** Change of pace. Our award-winning freelancer, Eric Barton, entertains on page 58 with a house hunting expedition in Italy’s historic Tuscany section. It is hard to tell from Eric’s tone how serious he was about actually buying a historic home on foreign soil. We know he did not commit on this trip. But isn’t it pretty to think he did?

BEAUTY’S BEST FRIEND
MEET THE MAN A-LISTERS LIKE KIM KARDASHIAN AND ARIANA GRANDE TURN TO FOR THEIR ICONIC TRESSES. Interview By Alyssa Morlacci
C
hris Appleton’s first client was his mother. Growing up in England, he’d style her hair up, or down, or with accessories, as she watched TV. Then, he’d tell her to have a look. “She’d look in the mirror and you’d notice she’d stand differently,” he recalls. “Her shoulders would go back, and for a moment she would forget who she was and see this slightly different character looking at her, or alter ego.” When he was 13, Appleton was old enough to get a job at a salon. Then, he started working fashion shows in Milan, Paris, London and New York. “I used to pay for my own flights, pay for my own accommodations. I’d always stay in some terrible little hostel,” he says. “And I would do all of that just to pass hairpins at the Chanel show at 4 a.m. in the morning. I’d have no sleep, but I was always so visual. I’d look around; I was like a sponge absorbing everything.” His career gained momentum in 2010 after he won on the London TV show “Hairdresser of the Year,” and Rita Ora asked him to style her on a world tour. Appleton has since moved to Los Angeles, and this year he was presented a Hollywood Beauty Award on stage by Kim Kardashian, who is part of his client roster that also includes Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande. During his recent trip to South Florida, we caught up with Appleton to find out the season’s hottest trends and what it’s like to work with big names. How do you handle the all-eyes-on-you pressure of styling high-profile clients?
I think I handle the pressure by doing the work. I put the work in; I put the prep in; I think about it a lot; I spend the time trying to execute the look as best I can; I have plenty of options; and I guess I go above and beyond what’s expected, and that’s how I cope with the pressure. Because I think if you do that you then have the confidence. And people believe in passion, and when you’re dedicated to

something. I think that’s infectious. You work with celebrities who make hair headlines. What’s it like to be constantly cycling in new looks?
Years ago, it used to be one look. In the ’60s it was the bouffant, and in the ’80s it was the mullet and the perm; every year it was a significant hairstyle. Nowadays, every day is a new look, and fashion is the expectation of change; it’s the expectation of shock; it’s the expectation of social media, flicking through, looking for inspiration like, ‘Oh, what’s next, what’s next?’ Girls more than ever want more than one look; they want short hair one minute, long the next; they want to color it. That’s why hair extensions and wigs are popular now. When working with someone like Kim Kardashian do you come up with the inspiration or does she?
I think it’s always a collaboration for sure, but sometimes I’ll be like, ‘Oh why don’t we do this? I saw this.’ I send Kim pictures all the time, or she’ll send me pictures. She’ll be like, ‘This is cool.’ So there’s always stuff floating around. Although it might not happen at that particular moment, eventually it’ll come around. What is your favorite celebrity look you’ve done to date?
There’s so many. I mean, glass hair was a great thing that became a big trend, and that started with Kim. I love Miami, that’s when we did the neon green hair; that was so much fun. I loved it when JLo had her 50inch hair—that was in Miami, actually. I loved Ariana’s cover of British Vogue. It was always kind of a dream of mine when I was little to do the cover of Vogue because that was always like the Bible. So that was one of those mo-
ments where you’re like, ‘Wow, I’m actually doing this, this is really happening.’ Tell me about your favorite products.
Probably my favorite product is Color Wow’s Dream Coat because it’s a huge part of the whole glass hair trend. It’s humidity proof, perfect for [South Florida]. Also I love the Color Wow Mineral Powder—it’s a root touch up—because that’s great to cover hairlines, cover root extensions. What are some hair trends for summer and fall?
Definitely bangs. People are playing a lot with bangs. You’ll see them with bangs one minute and then without the next. A lot of them use clip-on bangs, and they’re really good now. A lot of it is customizing it, so taking it to the salon and getting someone to cut it for you and show you how to put it in. You won the Lori McCoy-Bell Hairstyling Award a few months ago— congrats! And Kim Kardashian presented you with the award. Tell me about the moment.
It was just so special to have Kim take the time to come and do it. It was so kind of her. She’s a mom, it was a Sunday, she could have been with her kids, but she took the time to give back, and I think that really says so much about her. And for her to present the award meant so much because she’s my hair muse, so it really meant the world for me.

Capturing the South American Spirit Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz on making waves in the fashion industry. Interview By M E L I S S A P U P P O

eminine silhouettes are indicative of designer Johanna Ortiz’s eponymous collections. Pieces feature distinctive ruffles and prints; bold color pairings; and a playfulness that warrants a twirl. It’s all part of the vision Ortiz set out to create when starting her namesake label in 2001. Prior, she left her South American roots to study at the Art Institute of Florida. “Back in those days, you couldn’t find a school for fashion design in Colombia,” Ortiz says. “Florida has always been in my heart. I grew up going there every summer and still have my vacation home in South Florida.” An encounter with the online fashion discovery platform, Moda Operandi, and its owner, Lauren Santo Domingo, would later lead Ortiz to feature a trunk show on the site. Numerous collaborations followed, thus officially launching the line internationally in 2014. Today, the designer label is carried in more than 73 stores globally, including South Florida retail locations like Kirna Zabête, The Webster, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. We recently met up with the Colombian designer during a trunk show in partnership with Kirna Zabête at The Royal Poinciana Plaza. Donning her Mysterious Soul One-Shoulder Georgette Dress, she showcased her

Spring-Summer 19 and Pre-Fall collections. Here, she talks inspiration, her role in dressing women and what’s next for her brand. On designing the new collections...
I’m always an advocate that there are no frontiers. You can mix cultures and make it look beautiful. For SpringSummer 2019, the starting point of the collection was Paul Jacoulet, a true Renaissance man. [He’s] French but born and raised in Japan. A good calligrapher and a recognized butterfly collector, his favorite clothes were kimonos. The muses of Jacoulet and his daydreaming scenarios set the color palette for the collection. For Pre-Fall 2019 it was the nymphs of John William Godward laid down over a decadent leopard fur blanket... It’s all very hedonistic. Also, our beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains near the Caribbean Sea. There you’ll find jaguars still in their natural habitat—wild, elegant, fearless. On her Colombian culture’s influence on designs...
My Colombian roots will always be the inspiration of the collections. Latin America is a
rich culture driven by authentic aesthetics. I live in the Pacific of Colombia. The Pacific coast has a lot of heritage, and it has a lot of cultures. It’s a festive city. We’re known as the capital of the salsa dance. On dressing women...
I want the brand to be part of the modern woman’s closet. I use most of the long dresses or kimonos as my everyday uniform. It’s not about dressing up only for evening or cocktails, but to make your every day a little more special. That’s my goal each time I sit and design. On upcoming adventures...
I would love to do a home collection. I love prints. I love fabrics. Decoration has been one of my passions, and I do it for my houses. But I’ve never [done] it as a business. Since I have a lot of prints that I develop by myself, I probably could use the prints for the house.

The Linebacker Barista A retired NFL veteran creates a new life in Fort Lauderdale behind an espresso machine. By Eric Barton Photography by Austen Amacker

nder any other circumstance, they were unlikely friends. They met in the lobby of a nursing home, neither of them happy to be there. For Stephen Tulloch, he was 6 or 7 years old, waiting in the lobby until his mom finished her shift as a nurse at 11 every night. She was raising three kids on her own, holding down multiple jobs. Jay Lotspeich was there to visit his mom, Rachel, her mind lost in a cloud of Alzheimer’s. He took a liking not only to the kid he passed every night but also his entire family. Owner of a Miami construction company, Lotspeich would help them with financial needs. “He just told me the basics: stay in school, get good grades, behave, the things kids are supposed to hear,” Tulloch remembers. “He also gave me my first computer. He helped me pick a college. He was just there for me.” It wasn’t hard for Tulloch to find a college. As a star linebacker at Miami Killian Senior High School, he had his pick of scholarship offers. He decided on NC State and spent three years there before going pro. Few thought he could make it. At 5-foot-10, he’s undersized for an NFL linebacker, and even scouts looking to rep him told him he should’ve stayed in school. Tennessee drafted him in 2006, though not as a starter. The next season, the team brought in a veteran linebacker to be the starter, and that relegated Tulloch as a backup again. “The knock on me was that I was short, undersized, and they told me I was never going to make it,” Tulloch says. “Yeah, it gave me a chip on my shoulder. I’ve always had it since I was a kid. Dad wasn’t around, told I was too small, mom having to work three jobs. That chip is always what pushed me to work harder.” Late in Tulloch’s second season, the veteran starter got injured. They were at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, an intimidating place to be the away team, and Tulloch finally had his chance. He managed 11 tackles

that game, leading the team, even though he didn’t come in until the second quarter. He would spend the rest of his career—11 seasons in total—as a starter. Along the way, whenever Tulloch needed guidance, needed someone to remind him of the right path, he called Lotspeich, who walked him through hiring agents, negotiating contracts and managing his money. “He was just always there for me, like family,” Tulloch says. Lotspeich died in 2012 at 79, before he got to see Tulloch retire and help him pick a path for what’s next. Tulloch took a year off to travel, the highlights being South Africa and Machu Picchu. Then he started thinking about a business venture, something that would put in play the skills he learned in those Stanford, University of Miami and Michigan School of Business classes he had taken in off-seasons. He bought a house in Coral Ridge, and thinking about opening a co-working office, he spent $1.1 million in January 2017 on a building in Fort Lauderdale, at 727 NE Third Ave., in the up-and-coming Flagler Village neighborhood. He couldn’t make the numbers work on a business plan for the co-working space, so instead, he decided on a drive-through coffee shop, something that otherwise didn’t exist downtown. He went to tradeshows and attended a two-week coffee
academy in Seattle to learn about the business. Built in 1975, the building needed significant work to get up to code. Tulloch served as his own contractor. In all, he sunk a half-million to update the space. He opened Circle House Coffee in March. The building is hard to miss because of dramatic murals in shades of blue and yellow. “I’m here every day, seven days a week,” he says, sitting at a long high-top across from a display counter of pastries. It had only been a couple of weeks since the opening, and Tulloch said it had gone well so far. But he wishes Lotspeich was here to see it. It was Lotspeich who had always encouraged Tulloch to be thinking about life after football, to be dreaming about opening a business or taking on a new venture. As Tulloch was opening the coffee shop, he was imagining what Lotspeich would say in response, how his mentor would have been proud to see the place become reality. “I know he would have liked to see what I’ve done,” Tulloch says. “He was always there for me.”

Made For The Movies The untold story of iPic: How fleeing his home country led Hamid Hashemi to transform America’s movie business forever. By Reed Alexander Photography by Austen Amacker
O
n Dec. 10, 1978, an electric mix of intrigue, anxiety and desperation crackled throughout the airport in Tehran. Revolution was coming, and Iran was on
the edge. Hamid Hashemi, at the time a 19-yearold medical student from the University of Isfahan, advanced through the aisle of an Air France flight bound for New York. Despite the pain of leaving everything behind, the brave Iranian knew he had no choice. Either stay and be trapped, or leave and find freedom elsewhere. A few weeks later, the Persian kingdom collapsed, its ruler replaced by the hardline theocracy of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and his Islamic Revolution. For millions of Iranians, including Hashemi’s own parents, a curtain of isolation had fallen. When he arrived in America, Hashemi spoke little English, but he “learned [the language] watching ‘Sesame Street.’” In 1981, he graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in microbiology and settled in Fort Lauderdale. He quickly hit his stride buying and flipping residential, then commercial, real estate. A $200,000 investment in a commercial property that included his first three-screen theater led him to the cinema industry at 25 years old. It was a short-lived gambit, however—a rival company moved into the area and opened an eight-screen theater, putting him out of business. He was undeterred, though. “You learn so much more from your failures than your successes,” he reflects. “You can either pack your bag and go do something else, or you can take what you learned [and] go figure out how not to fail.” From 1985 to 1995, Hashemi went on a shopping spree, buying up independent theaters throughout the South Florida area, using capital raised from local investors. At the same time, Blockbuster was rolling out. “Because of Blockbuster, everybody thought theaters are going
28

to be out of business, so they were selling them really cheap,” he explains. In 1995, he founded Muvico, a chain most familiar to Boca Raton residents thanks to Muvico Palace 20 on Airport Road (today, it’s owned by Cinemark). Ten years later, Hashemi exited Muvico in 2005, the same year his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Amid her decade-long battle, Hashemi dove back into the industry, this time piloting a brand new concept: iPic. What began as a single Wisconsin location in 2007 has spread to 16 theaters today, in states including New York, California, Texas and Florida. In Palm Beach County alone, there are two—one in Boca Raton’s Mizner Park, and the newest just off Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, which rolled out its red carpet in March. It’s equal parts movie theater and art gallery, replete with bespoke pieces like a massive outdoor mural by Wynwood Walls artist Peter Tunney. In an age when ticket sales are under attack by Netflix and most theaters have become cesspools for sweatpants and chicken nuggets, iPic has pursued an “urban country club” approach, Hashemi says. He’s targeting “young adults, empty nesters, [and]
young professionals that are going out all the time,” seeking a plethora of entertainment options concentrated in one place. That means creating a magnet that attracts people to see a movie, but holds them by offering so much more. iPic in Delray features a cocktail lounge that would be equally at home at a luxe South Beach hotel; and plush, reclining seats arranged in a private pod configuration. Guests choose from a menu of hand-crafted cocktails and made-to-order dishes like lobster rolls, tuna on crispy rice and filet mignon sliders, which are delivered directly to their seats. Impressive, considering it was all dreamt up by a man who stepped off a plane 41 years ago with just $700 in his pocket, and not a single friend in America. One might say it’s a story that sounds fit for the silver screen. In spite of his success, Hashemi insists he’s far from finished. Eight new iPic theaters are under way with another 10 sites in development. “Everything I’ve done has been built around experiences,” he concludes. “I fell in love with providing a good entertainment destination for people, and that’s what I’ve done all along.”

The Boca Tribe A memoir delves into what it’s really like to grow up among the privileged. By Eric Barton Photography by Austen Amacker
T
Kira Madden was in 10th grade when her friend sat her down on a shag pink carpet. They were cross-legged, and she watched as her friend put pills in small piles. She assigned them to days, this pile for Monday, this pile for Tuesday— uppers and downers and first steps toward Madden’s eventual Adderall addiction. “This,” her friend said, “is how you survive Boca Raton.” It’s a moment that challenges what a lot of us think of Boca. Outwardly, many see a life of privilege—medians as manicured as golf courses and perfect rows of cul-de-sac homes. It’s easy to assume that the lives here must be that tidy, too. But as an author, Madden has attempted to break down the pristine image of growing up here. Her new memoir, “Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls,” contains a series of essays about her life as a gay, biracial child in a home that, perhaps like Boca, might have seemed perfect only from the outside. The book has earned wide-ranging praise, including a New York Times review that describes the book as “compulsively readable” and a “fearless debut that carries as much tenderness as pain.” The niece of fashion designer Steve Madden, T Kira Madden went to a private school and rode horses—a recipient of many of the things you’d assume would lead to a solid upbringing. But Madden’s book delves into how childhood can become, despite a parent’s best intentions, a series of struggles. Madden was born to a single mom and a father married to someone else. He wasn’t around much for Madden, and her mom also disappeared often due to a long-fought addiction. Madden, speaking recently at a coffee shop in Weston, says growing up she met the constant challenge to suppress anything that made her different.
30
SUMMER 2019
Perhaps most difficult of it all was dealing with the nickname she had been given, “Kinky Chinky”—always a reminder that she didn’t look like everybody else. “People would say, ‘You don’t look Asian, and that was the best compliment I could get,” she says. She became friends with another girl they called “Black Betty,” and the two of them would lob “such racist things” at each other constantly. She thinks now it was a way to take away the sting when they heard them from everyone else. Coming out as gay was simply not something Madden considered in Boca. She watched a friend who tried it get so bullied at school that she had to transfer. Her sexuality wasn’t something Madden would discuss publicly until she moved to New York City, and, coincidentally, got a note from a downstairs neighbor that they shared something in common. They were both from Boca Raton, and so they bonded over that before she became Madden’s first girlfriend. It was about then when Madden also figured out that all those things that had
made her different were the things that also made her interesting. “For so many years, I couldn’t understand, what is it that is so different about me,” she says. “As an adult, I came to understand that I’m different and that’s amazing and that’s a wonderful thing.” Madden, who still lives in New York, is prepping for her next book, a novel. The first step is clearing off her desk, which she cluttered with keepsakes to help bring her back to her childhood, including family photos, a lava lamp, glitter pens and the turquoise typewriter she used to write her memoir. She’s hopeful there’s a kid in Boca who reads her book, someone deep in the throes of exactly what she went through. It isn’t hard for her to imagine what she’d say to that kid. “Your outsider-ship is your strength, your superpower,” Madden says. “Learn to use it for others. There will always be people wanting to make you feel like being different is wrong. But you will find your people. Eventually, you will find your people, and it will be great.”

RISE31 Redefine your training environment at Delray Beach’s new fitness facility By Melissa Puppo
I
’m always trying new workout classes and looking for ways to expand my realm of fitness. So when I heard about a new workout called In-Trinity, I was enticed to give it a try. The method was developed by South African cyclist Jonathan “Johnny G” Goldberg—the man who brought the bike indoors to create what we know as Spinning. I decided I’d give it a try at RISE31 in Delray Beach, one of the only studios in South Florida to offer the experience. The new fitness destination offers three concepts—yoga, cycling and In-Trinity—under one roof (hence the name). The hour-long class incorporates movements that tested my physical abilities in numerous ways. The Workout In-Trinity combines the teachings of yoga, Pilates, tai chi and martial arts with strength training. The class began with a standard stretch sequence and a vinyasa flow, although each class is taught differently depending on the instructor. While I’ve taken yoga enough times to remember the basics, I wasn’t prepared to go through the movements while being elevated on an inclined board shaped like an hourglass. I experienced moments of unbalance and shakiness in my legs as the instructor, Tamara, guided the class through move-
ments I once considered simple, such as warrior III or a raised hands pose incorporating a slight bend of the back. I had to remind myself these were all good things. I was improving my balance and coordination as gravity worked against me. The board features long straps on one end that are utilized throughout the class to improve flexibility or provide stabilization during more challenging movements. A pair of wooden In-Trinity sticks offer light resistance when focusing on core and strength exercises like squats. Class ended with a traditional stretch and a final touch that left a lasting impression. As we entered savasana (a relaxation posture), Tamara placed cool lavender towels across our foreheads. Do More In addition to In-Trinity, members can choose between yoga and cycling classes, which incorporate state-of-the-art light technology that goes along with upbeat music (plus a eucalyptus towel after). Unlike other cycling studios, RISE31 has no monitors. It’s a true “do good, feel good” kind of workout. Even better, each guest’s bike settings and shoe sizes are recorded after their first class, so the next time they arrive, they can clip in and go.

Stepping Back in Time Bask in the spendor of a restored 18th century Georgian mansion set at the foot of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Ireland’s County Laois. By M E L I S S A P U P P O
BALLYFIN DEMESNE might be one of the most enchanting destinations you’ve never heard of. Chances are, you’re also unfamiliar with the hotel’s rich history. This was true for me when a springtime venture led me to the little gem in Ireland’s countryside.
T
ouching down in Dublin after an Aer Lingus direct flight from Miami, I would soon embrace the land of “40 shades of green.” This nickname is in part due to the country’s wet climate, witnessed while driving past sheep-filled farms and old cobblestone towns before arriving at the quite unassuming property in County Laois. There, imposing gates flanked by 5 miles of stone wall acted as a precursor to what I’d find on the other side of Ballyfin. Once given the “OK” by security, my driver navigated

through a winding, heavily forested roadway sprinkled with the remaining bluebell flowers of the season. Then, all at once, the view cleared to a grand 18th century Georgian estate smack dab in a sea of rolling green parkland with an impressive lake laid out before the mansion. This would be my home for the next several days, but back in the 1820s, Lady Caroline and Sir Charles Coote lived off the land for nearly a century. They built the understated neoclassical mansion that stood before me prior to selling it to the Patrician Brothers who ran a boarding school for close to 80 years. As I stared at the four massive pillars anchoring the doorframe, it was difficult to believe that the estate nearly became a ruin. An extensive eight-year restoration beginning in 2002 returned the property to its original grandeur with several new features, like a cascading waterfall visible to the west of the man-

sion designed by Jim Reynolds. Today, Ballyfin is a top-ranked private Irish country house, earning the No. 1 spot in Travel + Leisure’s “2018 Top Hotel Resort United Kingdom and Ireland” list and receiving the No. 2 spot in its “2018 Top Hotels in the World” list. It’s visited yearly by guests near and far who descend on the 614-acre land in search of peace, grand hospitality and maybe a glimpse into the aristocratic life of years past. It didn’t take long to get caught up in the lifestyle, especially when first greeted by staff in butler garb who showed me to my room. The scent of an always tended fireplace wafted through the halls. I stayed in The Dr. Beaufort with serene green and terra-cotta French toile walls that led to an outdoor deck with a view of the recently opened Gardener’s Cottage. The charming new addition includes a spacious living room, kitchenette, two fireplaces, two bathrooms and an airy bedroom overlooking the estate’s gardens. The 20 rooms and suites inside the mansion vary from the impressive Lady Carolyn Coote Room (formerly her boudoir) that overlooks the lake done in a bold powdery blue wallpaper with a rococo stucco work ceiling, to The Westmeath with a carved French bed positioned in the center of the room with golden accents. They’re outfitted with marble bathrooms featuring walkin showers, luxurious bathtubs and next-level accessories, including a Dyson hair dryer. Like the Coote’s famous saying, “cost what it may,” Ballyfin is full of eye candy at every twist and turn. It was my duty as a guest—and a real cultural loss if I didn’t—to appreciate the rich history and architecture. The head of an Irish elk, once found in a bog in Tipperary dating back at least 10,000 years, stands guard to the Entry Hall with an antique Roman mosaic floor brought in from 1822; life-size paintings of the Coote family hang on walls near the Grand Staircase; and each reception room ceiling is so rich in detail it could have taken hours to study the designs—and that’s just scraping the surface. Typical of guests, it was easy to befriend the butlers (some attended Ballyfin in its school days) who became our go-to guides for outdoor amusement. My group and I met with Lionel and his two ponies, Ben and Kit, for a jaunt around the estate to view Ballyfin’s hidden gems, like grottos from the 1700s and a tower where you can climb 97 steps to view the green countryside. I tried my hand at clay pigeon shooting with Glenn as a teacher and, surprisingly, did well. I was on my way to becoming an Irish lass.

(above) The Gold Drawing Room is one of Ballyfin’s most exquisitely designed rooms. (left) Stay in The Dr. Beaufort bedroom, one of 20 rooms and suites on the estate.
A special treat was the rare opportunity to get up close to birds of prey with our falconry guide, Tom. There were owls and a falcon, and we even prompted a hawk named Maude to perform a trick. The ever-so-Irish rain came and went often, but those moments became the perfect opportunities to nestle up and get lost in first-edition books from the 80-foot library. A secret bookcase led the way to an outdoor conservatory, an idyllic place to enjoy tea with bespoke china and a fresh cookie or slice of soda bread. Evenings typically ended with cocktails and a dinner made with fresh ingredients from Ballyfin’s stately gardens. At our farewell meal, the group and I tried on lavish costume gowns and accessories donated by the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
It was adult dress-up at its finest and made for a great scene in the Gold Drawing Room (arguably the most elegant room in all of the estate), where we were always greeted with a glass of Champagne and canapés followed by dinner in the Dining Room. It was difficult leaving behind the magical lifestyle I entertained for a few days, but I find comfort knowing I—like every guest who visits Ballyfin—am now part of a long-standing family tradition. The door is always open. I’ll be dreaming of that princess bedroom until my next stay.

THINKING OF ACTUALLY BUYING THAT SECOND HOME ON THE FOOTHILLS OF THE ALPS, TO LIVE OUT EVERYONE’S TUSCAN DAYDREAM? By Eric Barton

e approach the home like soldiers wary of an ambush, for some reason whispering and stepping quietly, as if ghosts await in what very well might be a haunted mansion. In the shadow of the towering home, it’s impossible at first to make out the details, the Tuscan sun hidden behind it. Our realtor, a British expat named Roy Santi, stops in his tracks in the alley, as if startled, causing me to pull up short. “Before I take you in here, I need to confess to you as if you’re the parish priest,” he says. Santi’s confession is a riches-to-ruin cautionary tale. Built originally as a reasonable three-story villa, the owners decided to expand it after coming into money. They added a shell that would have held tens of thousands of square feet. Then they lost their fortune, and here the structure has sat, far from finished, for most of a century. “Now, be careful,” Santi warns. “Part of it has fallen in.” As we get closer, it’s clear this home in the countryside of Italy is a wreck, a ruin the color of bleached bones. No windows hang in the handcarved panes. Scrap wood that passes for the back door creaks on rusted hinges. On floors of dirt, we step over large chunks of concrete that plummeted from the darkness above. Everywhere, some squatter or untold beast scattered piles of corncobs. Santi leads the way with the stark light from his cellphone, catching dust suspended in the stale air. We wind our way up a questionably constructed stairwell to inspect the cavernous empty shell of a home. Then we head back outside, maneuvering pits of mud that encircle the property like a swampy moat. It becomes clear: This place is a money pit.
60
SUMMER 2019
But squint, look hard into a future of contractors and architects and structural engineers, and you can see the magnificent home it could become. Santi explains that the property sits just outside a two-street village. Unlike other working-class Tuscan towns, with the pickups of handymen parked in many driveways, this is a noble hamlet, a place of hilltop mansions, home to landed gentry. Imagine this house, he says, with the family crests above the towering entrances refurbished; doors of rich chestnut wood and polished marble floors; salons and formal dining rooms and quarters in the back for the help; curving stairways up to parlors and studies; well-adorned third-floor bedrooms taking in the calming Italian summer breeze. It can be yours, this castle in the rough, for a negotiable $683,000. This was the sixth and final home we visited on a recent homebuying trip to northern Tuscany. It was, admittedly, mostly to fulfill a fantasy, to live out the dream we’ve all had of using the nest egg for a vacation property in view of the Italian Alps. If you’ve had the same dream, I’d recommend taking the same journey, walking into truly fascinating Tuscan properties and imagining yourself there, entertaining friends who are visiting from back home, opening Sangiovese on the terrace, actually doing that thing you’ve always imagined. Think about it: spending a few
(top left) Views abound in the northern Tuscan hills, with cool mornings burning off into lazy afternoons. hours with a realtor might just be your vacation’s most enthralling outing, a look at how the locals spend their days. The archetype Italian daydream, inspired by tales like “Under the Tuscan Sun,” always involves buying a villa near famous towns like Cortona or Siena. Those are places discovered long ago, filled now with tour buses and transplanted northern Europeans and tiny condos that’ll cost you a literal fortune. So, instead, my trip began further north, in the still inexplicably undiscovered and more affordable mountainous countryside near the town of Barga. My base of operations was the Renaissance Tuscany, a former hunting lodge converted into a grand Marriott hilltop retreat, where roaring fires in the bar warm cool nights, the restaurant starts lavish meals with hearty bowls of stews enriched with bread, and rooms offer views of Barga, its colorful medieval buildings clutching to the hilltop.

F E AT U R E
Buying a home in Italy means living like an Italian; even this $797,000 estate has the most basic of kitchens.
On the night before the home tours begin, I meet the general manager of the Renaissance by a fire crackling in the lounge off the lobby. Georges Midleje is quintessentially Italian stylish, with no less than two scarves tied around his neck, one artfully hanging down between his sport jacket and another larger one to hold out the cool Tuscan evening. Midleje recommends that anyone visiting Tuscany for a homebuying trip ought to also indulge themselves, so on his advice, I spend an afternoon soaking in the resort steam room, floating around in the indoor pool, and letting the breeze sweep into my room from the valley below. Midleje also arranges a cooking lesson with the chef, who takes me into the village to buy ingredients from the open-air market and then spends the morning showing me how to make gnocchi with a sage cream sauce. Property highlights include the spa, mountaintop views and good Wi-Fi (which might sound small until you try to find one in the villages nearby). But for the audacious who insist on owning a plot of their own, the hotel will help by providing a list of local estate agents and some tips on taking those first unknown steps to ownership. Those who commit to the area near the Renaissance will find something that’s rare for Italy and even more rare in Tuscany, Midleje says. “There are cities in Italy where you can’t move without bumping into someone’s camera. They are overrun with tourists,” Midleje says. Here, though, in the valley that holds Barga, it’s possible to buy an affordable spot in a quaint village and live like a Tuscan, seeing very few tourists, immersing yourself in what it’s like to be a local. “This is a part of Tuscany that is an undiscovered little piece of paradise,” Midleje says. “This is a Tuscany where you can live like we do, like an Italian.”
The first day of my home shopping began with a realtor named Benito Casci. Like many in Barga, his grandfather moved to Scotland a century ago when this part of Italy was in financial ruin. Casci and many other Italian expats moved back over the last few decades, giving the area a surprising mix of Scottish and Italian accents, right down to the red British-style telephone booth in the city center. Casci explains that many of the area’s palatial estates were built by Italians who made their fortunes in Scotland and returned home, building extravagant vacation homes and spacious mansions to hold the entire extended family. Casci begins our tour with a trip up switchbacks to a $797,000 home built of stone on the first floor, with a strawberry-sorbet-colored second story of stucco. It’s not hard to see, looking at the barreltile roof, where many South Florida buildings got their Mediterranean inspiration. We walk around to the front and take in the view, looking over rows of grapevines and then villages dotting the valley. Out in the distance, snow-topped mountains rise above the clouds. “Those are the marble mountains,” Casci explains. “Michelangelo got his stone from them.” Inside, the house is undeniably charming, an inviting fireplace, exposed wooden beam ceilings of chestnut wood and southernfacing windows that fill the place with sunlight. Like most houses in Italy, the kitchen is a practical place. Instead of cabinets, curtains hang from Carrera countertops. The upstairs holds three baths and six bedrooms, spacious enough for a large family or a B&B in the making. As is the custom in Italy, the homeowner has joined us for the tour, along with her excitable border collie, who keeps jumping on

everyone. She takes us on a tour upstairs, with five bedrooms and three baths. Living in a smaller home nearby, she uses this as a weekly rental, meaning, for instance, there’s income potential for a new owner spending part of the year back home in Florida. Next, Casci drives up the hillside through the village of Castiglione di Garfagnana, where slate-gray buildings look frozen in time from perhaps the 11th century. Above it, we enter a modestly adorned three-story house of rock with brown shutters pulled tight. It’s a three-two, full of chestnut wood trim. Put it in Florida and it’d be worth millions. Here, it’s yours for $433,000. We head next to the sleepy village of Fiattone, and in the interest in seeing the bottom of the market, Casci unlocks the door to an apartment. It’s one-third of a structure that was likely once a splendid manor home, now split into three attached residences. The downstairs is an open floor plan kitchen and living room, humble but modern, and undeniably Tuscan, with chestnut wood and burgundy tile floors. Two bedrooms and a bath sit below exposed beams upstairs. A large tile terrace nearly doubles the square footage and promises chill summer afternoons. The asking price is as much as some South Florida property tax bills, $91,000. The following day, Santi takes me out on a more high-end home tour. After coming over 24 years ago from England, Santi literally fell in love, with the Italian lifestyle, the countryside, and also with his future bride, a native of Lucca. They’ve settled now in a country home outside Barga. His tour starts with Villa Moorings, a three-star hotel in Barga built in the 1920s as a vacation home. The owner is in the sparse-butbroad gardens out front, and she explains that her grandfather built it after returning with a fortune he made in logging and restaurants in Scotland. After his death, it sat for two decades, unused and boarded, until the heirs finally reopened it as a 12-room hotel in 2000. The ceilings hold intricate frescoes and sparkling chandeliers. Plush red carpet leads down hallways and up wide staircases. “Splendid!” Santi exclaims as we ascend. A spiral staircase leads up to a rooftop that looks out onto the center of Barga. With bathrooms added a couple decades ago, the place is dated, in need of exorbitant refurbishing to match its price. Perhaps it could become a luxurious hotel, or maybe the new buyer will convert it back to a vacation villa. It will need untold millions, on top of an asking price just below $4 million. But yet it’s also easy to imagine it, your new life as proprietor of a Tuscan hotel, perhaps occupying the family suite while overseeing the property’s rise to a well-regarded boutique. We head a couple blocks into the center of town and push open a metal gate into a covered drive. Beyond it splays out a property including a rose garden and an olive grove, buildings scattered between them. During Italy’s fascist years, this was the residence of Barga’s mayor, and it includes eight bedrooms spread between five buildings. From nearly everywhere on the property, there’s a simply stunning view of the village rising up, filling the horizon with a Mediterranean painter’s palette of reds and oranges and yellows. At $1.4 million, it could become a place where you vacation in one of the buildings, while friends and family occupy the others, everyone meeting in the evenings for dinner at a table below the grapevine trellis. The home tour ends at the shell of a house, the place that needs someone’s fortune and their imagination. The owners live nearby in the village, and Santi explains that they’re motivated to find someone to take on the project. This huge, bank-account-draining project. “It needs a lot of energy,” Santi admits. Perhaps that someone will be you or me, living out our fantasy someday of owning a home in the Tuscan countryside. See you there.

If You Go A homebuying trip to northern Tuscany ought to include some sightseeing along the way. Here’s where to stay and what to do. Renaissance Tuscany Il Ciocco Resort & Spa From the 1,700-acre property atop a hillside, the 180-room Renaissance boasts stunning views of the valley below and the Medieval town of Barga. There’s a well-regarded restaurant, bar with a welcoming fireplace, spa, indoor and outdoor pools and lots of courtyards for that party in Italy you’ve dreamt of hosting. Prices run from a couple hundred during the offseason to thousands for the well-apportioned villa suites. The Week once wrote about this property: “The sky is vast and cloudless, the mountains a hazy, moody purple, and the bright aquamarine pool beckons.” Not a bad spot to serve as your Tuscan base of operations. marriott.com, 39.0583.7691 Scacciaguai Named for an Italian word meaning “to drive away your troubles,” this cozy bistro is one of Barga’s finest restaurants, featuring a rotating menu designed on what’s fresh that season. nown for his lavish-
ness, Al Capone has been memorialized as one of our most infamous, Prohibition-era bootleggers. But he was also an astute real estate investor. For him, Florida was not just a seasonal vacation spot, but it was a place to mix business and pleasure the way you mix a fine gin and tonic. It was a place where homes were a means to entertain and to move loot. While his home on Palm Island in Miami Beach remains a snapshot of exquisite excess, he owned other properties along the Florida coast. One of those was allegedly a 1920s art deco home in Hollywood, Florida. It was believed to be one of his hideouts. Today, the 6,500-square-foot home has been recast as a modern haven with sensational vistas. Through numerous owners and countless redesigns, this white stucco home has withstood demolition. It is a fixture on the Hollywood landscape.

Coral Springs-based interior designer Perla Lichi entered the picgut renovation. “We needed to modernize this old Florida home but still hold on to its art deco flavor,” Lichi says. “It was a challenge. The second floor’s concrete slab and load-bearing columns were a constraint. The ceilings had to stay low. So we had to be creative in achieving height and space,” Lichi adds. “Yet, the second I walked in I said, ‘I know exactly what we are going to do.’ And my clients said, ‘Go for it.’ They had absolute faith in me.” Popcorn ceiling was removed and replaced with a reflective mylar layer, embedded with long LED strips arranged in random, sculptural synapses.

The indoor pool below a white-beamed ceiling inspired the turquoise and blue color palette.
The room feels inviting with its Natuzzi leather sofa, two white club chairs with chrome accents and a high-pile shag area rug from Fabrica that makes guests want to take their heels off. A Lucite table suspends translucent, turquoise Murano sculptures. Off to the side, a small nook along a bay window has two white chairs and a lacquered, white side table. The back of the home ends in a wide row of wall-to-wall sliders that open up to a rectangular, indoor pool below a white-beam ceiling. Beyond are the Intracoastal and a parking space for a boat. marines accenting the house against a clean, airy backdrop of white and various shades of gray. “There are actually 110 shades of gray,” Lichi says. Lichi split the massive great room open to the kitchen, and divided it into two smaller areas, one for TV viewing and one for water viewing. She continued her use of white leather sofas juxtaposed against gray shag rugs. Each rug has its own personality: gray-scale hue, shape and size. As in the living room, the sofas are adorned with oversized pillows in various textures, fabrics and shades of blue and slate. More aqua, turquoise and teal glass vases pop up against the white and gray tableau. The stark, geometric edges of the home are softened with a few rounded club chairs, also in white. And for a bit of whimsy, a pair of silver iguanas adds a bit of character. On the TV side of the great room, a giant throw in fuchsia, metallic silver, gray and black is draped across a side chair, drawing the eye. “Oh yes, I forgot to tell you,” Lichi says. “I love to knit. Each and every one of my clients gets a personalized Lichi throw. In this one, this pop of fuchsia counters the blues.” Lichi, who grew up in Hollywood, Florida, learned to knit sweaters from her mother, as a way to pass the time while expecting her first child. She noticed that her kids were outgrowing sweaters faster than she could knit them. It was time to knit blankets and throws: A one-sizefits-all heirloom. Today, she can knit a 72-inch-by-54-inch blanket in just one day, meshing threads sourced from all over the world, including metallics recently procured on her last trip to Turkey.

rchitect Alberto J. Comas still remembers one of the earliest conversations he shared with his client Gil de Ferran, the French-born, Brazilian-grown race car driver whose meritorious victories include winning the British F3 championship, two consecutive IndyCar titles and the legendary Indy 500. “Gil is a very smart fellow, and he’s also very particular,” Comas says. “When he first came to me he said, ‘I’d like my house to be designed just like we design an IndyCar.’” At the time, de Ferran, who now serves as McLaren Racing’s sporting director, was residing in a palm-dotted neighborhood near Las Olas Boulevard with his British wife, Angela, and their two young children. They had purchased a canal-fronting plot less than a mile away in Las Olas Isles. While driving around in search of his family’s first home in South Florida, de Ferran was charmed by Fort Lauderdale’s “village-y feel” and appreciated its close proximity to not one, but two, international airports (a must-have for the couple’s travel-intensive lifestyle). After six years of living overseas in the UK and two years in Indianapolis, the motorsport veteran felt like he was finally home. Nearly 20 years later, he was ready to uproot again. This time, though, to a masterpiece of his own making. “I’d always had this dream in the back of my mind that I wanted to build my own home,” de Ferran says. “It had been maturing for several years… and I got to a point where I was like, ‘Let’s do it!’” While he already had an architect in mind, his realtor pressed him to call Comas who’d built her home and had a reputation for designing custom residences that garnered second glances. At their initial client-designer meet-

ing, Comas and de Ferran connected instantly. Being an IndyCar loyalist may have scored points for the Puerto Rican architect, or it was his predilection for a particular German car manufacturer. “I’m a Porsche owner, so I‘m a fan of fast cars,” he says. According to Comas, de Ferran, a self-described “engineer and designer wannabe,” was deeply entrenched in every aspect of the home’s design and often shared his ideas and sketches. Comas remembers, “He would call me from the track if something had come to mind or would show up [to meetings] with thumbnails of things he’d thought of at night.” The 10,000-square-foot structure— which features social and service areas on the first floor, bedrooms and an office on the second, and a mixed-use game room on the third—took nearly a year to design and permit, and more than three years to build. Austere rectilinearity and an adroit
portrayal of organic architecture qualify as two of the home’s finest features. The midcentury marvel is rooted in nature and sustainability, like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. Modeled in concrete, the façade features a compelling configuration of horizontal thrusts, cantilevered overhangs and jutting rooflines. It is accented with smooth white stucco and telluric elements like mahogany and ipe wood, and vertical columns of vein-cut limestone. Reflecting ponds were set near the front door to create an illusionary protraction of the pool and water features at the rear of the home. Outdoor materials were pulled indoors and highlighted in provocative ways to accomplish additional cohesion with the external architecture. For example, veincut limestone walls leading to the front entrance bring texture, while mahogany supplies extra warmth and perpetuates the organic aesthetic through varying

elements, like case goods and built-ins designed by Equilibrium Interior Design Inc. Initially hired to design the millwork for the home, de Ferran later enlisted the renowned Fort Lauderdale-based firm to spearhead its overall design narrative as well. Equilibrium’s Voytek Faber began with picking a palette of ivory, whites, off -whites and browns, and used materials repetitiously—vein-cut limestone, ipe and mahogany—to create a soothing, almost meditative, atmosphere. Like Comas, Faber wove in many of Fallingwater’s prevailing attributes, including cantilevered surfaces and inverted L-shapes. In the kitchen, where the family often congregates for relaxed meals and de Ferran indulges in another of his favorite pastimes—yes, cooking—Faber embraced a “sleek-is-more” sensibility. Above an island with double sinks and a gas cooktop, a cantilevered stainless steel hood with LED lights evokes an upside-down catwalk. Opposite the island, a morning bar with refrigerator drawers stocked with juices and healthy snacks boasts a tower that houses a coffee machine and other appliances. In lieu of traditional cabinetry, walls of vertical, glossy white, acrylic panels conceal a full-size refrigerator, freezer and wine fridge. Additional panels provide access to a pantry, laundry room and a guest bedroom and bath. Another leads to a powder room with a dramatic hardwood feature wall and a matching vanity and shelf that appear to defy gravity beneath an elongated, backlit mirror. On the southern end, sliding glass doors frame the tropical topography and water views beyond. One set opens to the pool and a tanning deck, the other to a covered gazebo with commanding vistas of the Seminole Canal. If the kitchen is the home’s heart, then the great room is its backbone. To bring the capacious, open-concept plan down to a more intimate scale, Faber divided the space into three vignettes that mingle ease with the couple’s fondness for relaxed entertaining with friends,

family and out-of-town guests. A suspended ceiling supplies drama and demarcation above a semi-formal dining area anchored by a perpendicular glass table that stands ready for a Dionysian feast. Nearby, an elegant-yet-informal living room furnished with luxurious, low-profile pieces, like matching leather-upholstered sofas and ebony side chairs sourced from Artefacto, makes an ideal setting for an afternoon siesta or après dinner aperitifs. A pint-sized bar detailed with cantilevered, vanilla onyx slabs that glow when illuminated holds court in a corner alcove. Various design decisions were made in order to make the little bar feel larger. “There are no hanging light pendants, and the horizontal wooden slats and onyx counter keep the area open and uncluttered,” Faber says. “The upper cabinets are tucked away and a mirrored backsplash offers the illusion of more space.” Art and decorative touches were deliberately selected and kept to a minimum so as to not distract from the wow-worthy views. A pair of de Ferran’s racing trophies grace a side table, and a

Four-paneled mahogany glass sliders open directly to a section of lap pool hugging the edifice’s eastern wall and another to an airy, covered patio with a Brazilian ipe ceiling that offers year-round functionality. With no shortage of natural light during the day, Comas lined the ceiling with cove lights to irradiate the space after sundown. Comas remembers, “Gil would often say, ‘I want to see the lighting but I don’t want to see its source.’” Every room bears some type of indirect lighting with table lamps only present in some of the bedrooms. The sculptural, three-story staircase is another visual showstopper. Comas conceded the structure, albeit spectacular, was one of his greater design challenges. “It looks simple, but it was very complex to build,” Comas says. After numerous iterations, a meticulous system of steel rods and wooden treads was achieved. Three dozen, 30-foot rods, stretching uninterrupted from the ground level to the third floor, support

Equilibrium designed the bespoke built-in with hanging cylindrical pendant lights and matching side tables that appear to levitate above a glossy, viscose and wool carpet. A deep soaking tub perfect for two reminds that cleanliness is next to godliness. Inside the steam shower, electrochromic glass or “smart windows” tint electronically at the touch of a button. To keep the vanity and countertops clutter-free, vertical wooden towers were added to hide electrical outlets and provide extra storage. Elevated above swaying palm trees and lush vegetation, the third-floor, mediagame room feels akin to treehouse living. The man cave-inspired space, and one of de Ferran’s favorite spots, boasts a Flexform sectional, a pool table and a hidden bar. Equipped with a Murphy bed and a bathroom with a steam shower, it also serves as a bonus room for visiting guests. The outdoor balcony provides a comfortable perch for sunrise and sunset watching. Inimitable in its own way, the home has served as an inspiration for other homeowners around the neighborhood. “I think Gil’s house was probably the first of a wave of modern architecture we’ve seen in Las Olas Isles,” Comas says. “It seems like every time another house went up, it looked exactly like theirs.” If it’s true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then de Ferran and his crack design team have their own talents to toast.

THE REAL ESTATE ROUND-UP A MONTHLY FOCUS ON BROWARD COUNTY’S REAL ESTATE
We asked these MASTER BROKERS... What is your favorite local spot to take clients for lunch or dinner, and why? Dale Palmer - COLDWELL BANKER RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE I like to take my customers to Kaluz on Commercial Boulevard and the Intracoastal waterway, especially if they’re looking for waterfront homes and are from out of town. It has gorgeous views and atmosphere and it’s directly on the Intracoastal with yachts and boats going by, so they can get a feel for the tropical living in the Fort Lauderdale area. It shows what they could be doing in their free time on the weekend, pulling directly up to the restaurants, and Kaluz offers great food with organic and all wild caught seafood selections.
Rose Sklar - COLDWELL BANKER GLOBAL LUXURY One of my favorite spots to take clients to lunch/dinner in Weston would have to be The Cheese Course in Weston Town Center. Seasonally, the streets are always decorated for the holidays and the streets are abuzz with families enjoying the many shops and restaurants that call Weston home. The food is authentic and delicious, and it’s a great spot for a glass of wine or a cup of coffee with dessert, with a perfect view of the clock tower and the colorful hues of the architecture.
Richard Masterson, Jr. - ONE SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY My favorite place for a client lunch or dinner is The Capital Grille in Fort Lauderdale. I have the same table, and the same amazing server, Raul Dumitru. When I arrive with my clients, I am greeted in a warm and friendly manner. The food is always excellent, and I know the service will make the impression on my client that I am looking for. For me, it’s like a private club. Raul knows how important these outings can be, and he makes sure the client leaves impressed.
Brian Hero - ONE SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY My favorite local spot to take clients for dinner is Grille 66. The food is consistently excellent, the service superb, and the clubby ambience is enhanced by the stunning mega yachts surrounding the dining areas.
Jose Gomes - COLDWELL BANKER GLOBAL LUXURY Ann’s Flowers on Las Olas is an excellent place to enjoy a cappuccino and a light bite. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed with both indoor and outdoor café style seating. They recently added a wine bar, too.
Steven Roberge - COLDWELL BANKER RESIDENTIAL REAL ESTATE Definitely Shooters Waterfront. It has a casual relaxed atmosphere, visibility to boating, indoor/outdoor seating, nice variety of food choices, and it’s nostalgic. It literally oozes Fort Lauderdale! Clients love it.
Marisa DiLenge - BETTER HOMES & GARDENS FLORIDA 1ST REALTY My favorite spot for lunch or dinner is Kaluz. It always has great food and a lovely ambiance inside or out. It’s one of the few waterfront spots that is casual yet chic.
Joy Triglia - BETTER HOMES & GARDENS FLORIDA 1ST REALTY My favorite spot to take my clients is Casa D’Angelo. I want my clients to have an experience. Casa D’Angelo offers the best of everything; food and ambiance, and the staff by far is the best! The special dishes–whether pasta, meat or fish–are made fresh daily. Chef Angelo and staff provide the ultimate in dining, every time!

The Terrace Grill
The Terrace Grill The Dalmar’s signature restaurant is setting a new standard for dining in Fort Lauderdale By Alyssa Morlacci | Photos By Michael Stavaridis and Anthony Nader
F
or some time, Fort Lauderdale was the beach and Las Olas Boulevard. Then, neighborhoods like FAT Village and the MASS District introduced the locals who know about them to urban art, hip food and a new wave social scene. But now, the city’s coolest spots aren’t staying contained to certain pockets. Destinations are popping up all throughout downtown, and perhaps the most alluring of them all is The Dalmar, a Tribute Portfolio, Marriott International hotel with everything from a resident yoga studio, to a swanky cafe, to the highest rooftop bar in the city. The property went beyond throwing an average grand opening event by hosting media and city notables for a night of food and drinks that culminated with a performance by Flo Rida. Attendees captured the concert on social media, and viewers could have mistaken the location for Miami, or even New York City. Radiating those big-city vibes is The Terrace Grill on the first floor. The classic American bistro with an Italian flair has a sprawling veranda that’s accessed through a wiry gate along the sidewalk. Velvet-navy booths borrowed from the 1960s wrap its perimeter. Diners can find solitude along a busy Federal Highway thanks to a barrier of
tall greenery. Inside, ceilings soar above sage-lined chairs that circle marble tables. Most impressive is the bar, where two chandeliers hang above bartenders donning white tuxedos. The menu was developed by chef Craig McNeil, a native of Scotland who spent 15 years in Turks and Caicos before he trained at Miami’s Scarpetta restaurant with celebrity chef Scott Conant. His background results in a cuisine that pairs French and Italian techniques with a Caribbean flair. No stranger to seafood, McNeil offers starters like the Spicy Tuna Tartare and Char Grilled Octopus. The seaside theme is applied through main course offerings like the Blackened Mahi Mahi Sandwich or the Fresh Seared Scallops. Our suggestion is to ask for the filet on special and pair it with a side of Roasted Brussels Sprouts. It’s hard to leave, so don’t, and instead take an ear-popping elevator ride up to the 25th floor to pay Sparrow, the rooftop bar, a visit. Enjoy views of our growing city at the chic lounge while sipping a cocktail—like the Are You Jealous?, which comes in a sparrow-shaped, copper-colored glass with vodka, sake, cucumber, lime and coconut water.

his is being written during D-Day anniversary week. Media attention has been focused on France and the WWII Normandy invasion, popularly known as D-Day. A major difference between press coverage in WWII and today’s limited engagements is that casualties in recent combat have been far lighter than in wars past. Accordingly, the death of a single soldier often gets considerable coverage. Recently CBS’s “60 Minutes” repeated a segment originally broadcast several years ago about the deaths of five soldiers in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan. It featured several men on the unlucky team who knew immediately that our own aircraft had killed their comrades. Assigning blame was tricky. CBS even brought in a general to comment. There was no doubt that it was a tragic case of friendly fire. Nobody could cover that up. It struck me as a startling contrast to a WWII likely friendly fire death in the skies above Iwo Jima. My cousin, Lt. JG Thomas McCormick died when something struck his small spotter plane flying off the Battleship Tennessee on the morning the Marines landed to begin one of the bloodiest fights of the war. For years that’s all the family knew. A great looking guy was missing, then pronounced dead. There was much more to the story, but that took 60 years to learn. We had contacted Paul Dawson who runs the USS Tennessee Museum in Huntsville, Tennessee. We were amazed to learn he knew of my cousin. His father had been the ship’s photographer and had photos of the handful of pilots who flew its small float plane, the OSU-2 Kingfisher. He 128

had photos of Tommy we never saw. He also discovered, a year later, a document we never knew existed. It was an “after battle” report, marked confidential, and not likely seen by human eyes for long after the 1945 battle. It included this shock: “It is possible that the loss of the TENNESSEE spotting plane, on D-Day, may have been caused by a ship firing from Fire Support Sector 6 at extremely long range.” The report went on to recommend our aircraft be careful to stay above the trajectory of the big shells. It suggests the Navy knew right away that a large shell had knocked Tommy’s plane apart without exploding. ***

here was much publicity about the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Celebrities, such as Tom Brokaw, have been inspired to return (after writing a best seller, “The Greatest Generation” based on our soldiers’ heroics in that historic
event). Over and over we heard that the sacrifices of the invasion forces, including French resistance fighters, must never be forgotten. One wonders about that. At the same time as all the D-Day anniversary pomp and pageantry, stories appeared about the drastic decline of visitors to hallowed Civil War sites. The Wall Street Journal reported that five major Civil War battlefields drew 3.1 million visitors last year—down from 10.2 million in 1970. That is a disturbing sign, especially for places such as Adams County, Pennsylvania, whose economy benefits from tourism associated with the Gettysburg campaign. They used to joke that there were more re-enactors roaming around Gettysburg on weekends than there were men in the actual battle. No more. One explanation for the decline in Civil War interest is the recent trend toward revising that history. It used to be settled history that the South seceded to form a new country, and the overwhelming numbers of their populations considered their first loyalty to their states, not a loosely constructed federal government. But recently, perversions of that history have depicted them all as racists and traitors. Thus the movement to take down Confederate monuments and portray admirable men, such as Robert E. Lee, as evil. As The Federalist put it: “If history is just another tool in the pursuit of political power, there’s not much of an impetus to get it right.” If something as monumental as the Civil War can be forgotten, what chance does Normandy have 100 years from now? gulfstreammediagroup.com
