AN ISSUE BY DESIGN BERNARD McCORMICK

I

f this issue seems heavy with interior design features it is because much of the editorial is part of the second issue of our new magazine, Florida Home & Garden. The magazine got off to a fine start in January, and this issue expands the concept. A third issue is scheduled for the summer and a fourth in fall. The stories and accompanying advertising appear in this publication, and also in the separately distributed Florida Home & Garden, which is wholly devoted to Florida living. It makes for a total distribution of 75,000 copies, and that’s impressive for a market that at present includes just Broward and Palm Beach counties. This impressive launch is a tribute to the magazine’s publisher, Sherry Goodman Ash. She has been with Gulfstream Media Group for 19 years, working out of Boca Raton and specializing in interior design products. All that experience and contacts are paying off. The editorial team for the new book did not seek our help in selecting the interior design locations this month, but we might have suggested one that is close to home. In fact, Jana Soeldner Danger’s feature on page 67 is a beautiful classic old Southern home located almost directly across the street from us. Fifty years ago we lucked into a house on one of Fort Lauderdale’s most charming oak-lined streets. It reposes on the coastal ridge almost 20 feet above sea level, and not threatened by rising tides. Of course, that was not a concern in 1970. We just needed to find a place in a hurry that was convenient to a Catholic school that did not have a waiting list for first graders. This was a time when young families were moving to new developments in Plantation, Coral Springs and Boca Raton. Downtown neighborhoods were out of favor. Las Olas Boulevard was a ghost town. Much has changed over the decades. Now our neighborhood, a partially closed and quiet section just off what is now a busy Las Olas Boulevard and a walkable mile from the beach, is in demand. Many of the original cozy onestory cottages have been replaced by much larger residences.

14

MARCH 2019

Unfortunately, some of them are architectural zeros, with as much design imagination as a German bunker on Normandy beach. Some new residents have even cut down old oaks to make more room for their outsize boxes, destroying what attracts them to the section in the first place. But our neighbor’s house, only about 10 years old, incorporates the majestic trees into its plan; it would be right at home in center city Charleston or Savannah. There is another similarly elegant antebellum home just a block away, situated on what had been two corner lots leading to a busy street. When an impertinent neighbor asked the owner, a prominent builder/ banker, why he had sunk so much money into a such an elegant home on that location, he replied without hesitation “that location.” His design was inspired by those large old homes in Charleston that are very close to the commercial heart of that charming city. Our across-the-street neighbors are not identified in the story, obviously by request, but they could not be a nicer couple. They take a strong interest in the community and maintain their showpiece home beautifully. They voluntarily keep an eye on our place when they know we are out of town. Our own 1939 house lost its garage and driveway years ago to provide an extra bedroom, which creates parking problems when we have family affairs. Those neighbors have offered the use of their spacious driveway on those occasions. CORRECTION: In the February issue, we featured Andrew Cooper and Alex Schulze, founders of 4ocean, which we incorrectly called a non-profit organization. Additionally, we wrongfully reported the total amount of trash the company has collected from the ocean to date as 2 million tons. The company has collected 2 million pounds of trash.

Better Skin Now THREE MUST-TRY OXYGENATING FACIAL TREATMENTS By M E L I SSA P U P P O

DMK Enzyme Treatment

Oxygen Rx Treatment

It’s been called the “‘Game of Thrones facial” and the “grandma facial.” Its real name is the DMK Enzyme Treatment, which during the process, gives skin a tight, cracked and wrinkled appearance. Administered at Linda Rae Skin Care—a DMK award-winning Paramedical Skin Care Clinic—the treatment (from $175) helps restore the health of skin.

At Life Time Athletic’s LifeSpa, pamper yourself with the Oxygen Rx Treatment (from $125), which Audrey Frendreis, senior spa manager, says helps to kill bacteria, lightens and brightens the skin, and promotes healing from within.

Tri-Lifting Glow Facial Treatment: Experience three extraordinary benefits in one with the Tri-Lifting Glow Facial Treatment (from $259) that guarantees immediate results, offered at Anushka Spa, Salon & Cosmedical Centre.

Benefits: It’s ideal for all skin types, and

Benefits: Patients will have soft, hydrated

inside out, getting it to function properly as it did when younger,” says owner Linda Rae. The enzyme treatment improves scarring and treats issues like rosacea and melasma.

it works wonders for clients with acne and those who have rosacea and sensitive skin. No downtime is needed, so you can resume your usual schedule and skin care routine the next morning. Plus, it’s safe enough for weekly treatments.

How it works: An enzyme masque is applied, which stimulates the skin. “It also increases collagen production and clears out fluid of the cell and tissue with reverse osmosis and lymphatic draining,” Rae says. The masque then hardens and tightens; some can actually feel their face pulsating at this stage. After, the skin is bright, plump and hydrated. This effect is referred to as “plasmatic,” when the capillary network is visible on the skin’s surface.

How it works: A gel base is mixed together with a magnesium peroxide powder and is applied to the skin and worked in for a couple of minutes. An activator is then misted onto the face, which in turn converts the mixture into oxygen. You’ll feel a bubbling sensation and warmth—the turning point in the treatment. Once massaged in again, an equalizer spray is used and facial extractions can take place. A citric acid spray is applied followed by vitamin C and a post-peel balm.

How it works: The journey to a lifting facial takes 80-minutes and is broken into three phases. It begins with microdermabrasion to reveal fresh, untarnished skin. From there, a 30-minute microcurrent facial massage lifts the face using NuFACE microcurrent technology. It’s followed by an oxygen-infused Intraceuticals serum custom-mixed for each client’s specific skin needs. Infused oxygen helps to regenerate the skin cells. While it’s being mixed, you’ll also receive a collagen eye and lip mask to help moisturize the face’s well-worked areas.

Playing her way More than four decades after taking her first swing, Suzy Whaley has become the leader of one of the world’s largest sports organizations.

By Clarissa Buch Photography by Kenrick Mills

S

uzy Whaley, who recently became the first woman in history to serve as the president of the PGA of America, remembers the first time she hit a golf ball. She was 9 years old, hanging out at the Cavalry Club in Manlius, New York, where she had just spent a few hours swimming with friends. “Some of the boys from the pool invited me to hit golf balls at the range with them,” she says. “But of course, I was in my swimsuit, which wasn’t allowed. Once the staff called my mom and she arrived, she didn’t scold me. Instead, she asked if I liked playing, and from that moment on, no one could get me off the course unless it was snowing.” Whaley’s mother, Mary Ann McGuire, was an avid golfer, but never pushed the sport on her daughter. Growing up, Whaley was active in all activities, from skiing to swimming. But once she discovered golf, something about the sport was different. “Golf is a huge family affair,” she says. “Maybe it was in my blood. What I do know is my mother, who was an amazing woman, is a big part of why I started playing.” Whaley challenged the status quo as the first girl to compete on the boys’ golf team at Jamesville-DeWitt High School near Syracuse, New York, and went on to receive a full scholarship to play golf at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where she studied economics. “I was actually going to enroll in law school after graduation,” she says. “But then I qualified for a PGA event, and I played well enough to gain attention from sponsors. And well, now the rest is history.” Whaley, 52, has hit many more milestones, including becoming the first woman since the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias in 1945 to qualify for a PGA Tour event—the 2003 Greater Hartford Open. She was the 370th PGA profes-

30

MARCH 2019

sional (and the ninth woman) to acquire her certification as a PGA Master Professional, which is the highest educational level offered by the organization. She is also the first woman to ever serve as an officer of the PGA of America, where she previously held roles of secretary and vice president before her appointment as 41st president. “I wouldn’t have these opportunities without the women who came before me who made it all possible,” she says. “I really truly credit that to my success. You can’t underestimate that power, so while I’m the first, there were many others who opened these doors.” In addition to her role as PGA president, Whaley acts as the PGA director of instruction at the Country Club at Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens. “I actually took up the post right around the same time as I was made presi-

dent,” she says. “My husband and I were living in Fort Lauderdale and decided to move up to Palm Beach. Over the last couple of years as an officer, I missed the opportunity to coach and teach.” Whaley is also the owner of Suzy Whaley Golf, an organization that offers golf programs and corporate programs. Women and girls represent only about a quarter of all golfers, but Whaley’s leadership is poised to positively advance female representation in the sport for generations to come. “The sport has evolved so much from when I was a young girl,” she says. “I played with all boys, and now you have girls in high school playing on their own teams. But we’re still not where we need to be. I want more [people of diversities] to be introduced and invited to play the game. Perhaps in 10 years’ time, we’ll look even more different on golf courses, at least that’s what we’re aiming for.”

Island Dreaming Turks and Caicos lives up to expectations with turquoise waters and a wealth of sea life. by G L O R I A S T U A R T

ipping a chilled French rosé alongside a perfectly spiced gazpacho with feet in the sand, I marveled at the serenity of Grace Bay and the simplistic chic design of the Wymara Resort and Villas in Turks and Caicos. The hardest question of the day will be: spa treatment or yoga? Tomorrow would belong to the incredible turquoise waters—the islands of Turks and Caicos are

famous for their third-largest coral system in the world. Snorkeling was set on the agenda with hopes of turtle or ray sightings, but promised were an abundance of vivid tropical life within protected reefs. Located on the island of Providenciales, Wymara Resort is comprised of 91 guestrooms, 32 suites and four penthouses, all with incredible ocean views and understat-

ed décor. The 7,000-square-foot infinity edge pool has its own divine design that incorporates “island pods” where a special sunset dinner can be organized—perfect for a romantic trip. The staff is exceptionally friendly, yet not intrusive—eager to please guests. The resort is stunning, but with low-key elegance, allowing guests to ensconce themselves into the rhythm of the island. The archipelago is comprised of 40 islands and cays that lie at the southeast end of the Bahamas chain, 575 miles southeast of Miami. In 2017, Hurricane Irma devastated the area with its slowmoving Category 5 winds of more than 200 mph. This boutique resort not only survived but also thrived—the property’s oceanfront villas were completed this past December. Each villa has its own outdoor fire pit lounge area and private oceanfront infinity pool with an optional private chef. This posh boutique property is a mix of Caribbean aura and contemporary lush surroundings that are not only resilient but also luxurious and make for a true getaway. A

water view gives a space gravitas, grasps the imagination and provides a backdrop that is constantly in motion. It is everything nature intended. For many seeking to stake their claim on a piece of South Florida’s most desirable lots, waterfront is prime real estate. Angela Reynolds, the internationally renowned designer who counts Celine Dion and Elin Nordegren as her clients, is not only big on flowing views, she’s also big on liquid assets. “I love incorporating water in my designs,” Reynolds says. “Water creates an experience of calm and serenity.” It’s not a novel notion: from the Alhambra to the Taj Mahal, fountains and reflection pools have captivated for centuries. Touring one of Reynolds’ latest completed projects, a 9,000-square-foot remodel along Jupiter’s Intracoastal, one is first greeted by the commanding stone, wood, steel and glass entrance, juxtaposed by large steps that appear to literally float atop water. “Water softens the grandness,” Reynolds says. “It makes it more approachable and ethereal.” Green, tropical plants of various sizes and textures surround the narrow water channels and the two basins on either side. A 10-foot glass door pivots to enter.

56

MARCH 2019

“The door really sets the tone,” Reynolds says. When the Reilly family purchased the home, it was a 1980s ultra-modern relic, exuding the coolness of Madonna in her heyday—leather skirts and Aqua Net. Yet the family knew that with the right team, it could—like the pop queen—be reinvented.

(above) Glass, stone, wood and water converge in an entrance that is grand yet gracious.

gulfstreammediagroup.com

“It was a challenge,” Amy Reilly says. “We were looking to transform a home that was dated with round walls and stairs in the middle. We wanted a family-friendly, contemporary home. And most importantly, we needed it to work for our busy family of six. Out of all the designers we interviewed, Angela was the most visionary.”

gulfstreammediagroup.com

Along with hiring Reynolds, the Reillys brought on award-winning architect Mitchell O’Neil and Affinity Construction Group. The biggest structural challenge was removing the ceiling in the family room and kitchen to build a second-floor base that would allow for an upstairs addition. “We actually ended up with another

2 feet of ceiling height for the kitchen and family room,” Reilly says. Reynolds, who loves ceiling decor, took a cue and added beautiful, ebony wooden slats in the new ceiling. It became an interior and exterior motif. For the sunken living room, a popular ’80s feature, Reynolds gave it a refresh by designing a custom sofa from New Design in Fort Lauderdale. The sofa hugs the stairs as if it had been grafted to them. “This room was one of the more challenging ones, because of those stairs,” Reynolds says. “But challenges force me to come up with solutions that are exciting.” The dark ebony coffee table with its edgy abstract angles (another custom build) pairs precisely with the tailored sofa and the Bolier side chairs. The room’s fabric, a study in different shades of gray (though not quite 50!), is made for outdoor use. Reynolds wanted to make sure the room was not off limits to the couple’s four children. complete the look. Along the opposite wall, a glass-encased wine room holds more than 400 bottles—another liquid feature. For the dining room, Reynolds constructed a custom chandelier by assembling a variety of single Arteriors pendants in various sizes and adding a metal ceiling plate to unify the pendants, changing the way it cascades and diffuses light. “We looked at so many different options,” Reilly says. “And now I have something so unique and elegant created by Angela’s team. I love it.” The original marble floors in the home were in great condition, but Reynolds softened the

feel of the kitchen with wide, white oak planks that would contrast with the dark ceiling. “I like to mix and match different types of wood,” Reynolds says. “Sometimes clients are afraid to incorporate contrast, but it only adds layers of beauty. We are past the era where everything needs to match.” White shaker cabinets keep the look timeless, while the glass uppers showcase beloved objects without fear of playful children. Off the kitchen, the home opens up to a completely redesigned backyard space. Almost every inch of soil was turned over to create the pièce de résistance, conceptualized by landscape architect Tony Grimaldi. “In Florida, there is such a focus on exterior spaces,” Reynolds says. “No one is hanging out in the formal dining room; we are hanging out by the pool. Our goal was to capture the feeling of an inviting, boutique hotel.” The space is multi-leveled, continuing its use of fluid elements leading up to the awesome Intracoastal access. The pool, newly minted, has a hip, white plaster shell and features white, anti-slip tile that seamlessly dips into the water. “Joe’s Point,”named after the home’s owner, is a separate sitting area off the pool that can only be accessed by walking over wet steps and a gentle waterfall feature. The outdoor furniture at Joe’s Point is from Restoration Hardware. Above, a pergola from Arcadia opens and closes depending on weather conditions. “Joe’s Point is at the edge of the pool, near the water,” Reilly says. “It is the most relaxing place to end the day.” The backyard also boasts a covered canopy that feels

like a family room, with cozy, custom sitting pieces made from Resysta composite, an all-weather material. The same composite is used on the ceiling, harking back to the kitchen’s design. On the opposite end, another zen spot has been carved out along a rectangular fire pit. It is sunken, like the living room inside. Weather resistant, blue sofas give a burst of color and manifest clean lines. But the best part? The front row seats are for watching the famed Florida orange and pink skies that begin and end the day. The pool, large enough for laps and certainly large enough to hold spirited afternoon parties, is an exercise

in restraint, simplicity and multi-leveling. There is a shelf for youngsters to wade in or mothers to soak up vitamin D atop icy white, Brown Jordan swim chaises. Alongside, there are more thematic floating steps, this time leading into the water. “We enjoy every inch of the backyard space,” Reilly says. “I’m so grateful to our entire design team in how they created something so functional and so chic.”

RETURN TO THE CLASSICS

FULFILLING THE HOMEOWNERS’ LONGTIME DREAM OF LIVING IN A PLANTATION-STYLE HOME By Jana Soeldner Danger Photography by Barry Grossman

nlike many South Floridians today who prefer sleek, contemporary decors, the owners of a two-story plantation-style home in the Colee Hammock neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale wanted something classic. So, interior designer Aaron Taber of Retro Interiors in Fort Lauderdale went to work using rich, dark woods, traditional furnishings and fine fabrics to create a home that is elegant and beautiful, yet comfortable and pet-friendly for the owners’ two beloved golden retrievers. Taber had designed a smaller home, a bungalow in Victoria Park, for the same clients several years ago. Now, the semi-retired couple wanted something larger, partly to better accommodate an elderly family member who was living with them. The couple had always dreamed of living in a plantation-style home, and this one seemed to fit their needs especially well because it has two complete master suites—one upstairs and another easily accessible one on the ground floor. Taber has been working in the interior design industry for 24 years, but he began experimenting long before he became a professional. “When my parents would go away for a weekend, I’d rearrange the furniture,” he recalled with a smile. After originally considering a career in architecture, he found interior design to be a better match for his creative interests. “I’d always dreamed of a profession that would constantly be changing, and in this one, every project is different,” he says.

The exterior has the classic look of a century ago.

Although the name of the firm is Retro Interiors, Taber designs all kinds of decors, including contemporary, transitional and traditional. A CLASSIC EXTERIOR Although the 5,000-square-foot home with four bedrooms and 4.5 baths is only about 10 years old, the exterior has the classic look of a century ago. Two large trees hung with graceful Spanish moss shade the paved driveway and frame the front of the home, which has French doors, elegant pillars and mullioned vertical windows that run almost floor to ceiling. A covered veranda on the first floor and a second-floor balcony, both bordered with decorative spindled white railings, stretch the length of the façade. HIGH CEILINGS, WARM COLORS Inside, ceilings soar to 11 feet throughout the first floor and rise to 10 feet on the upper story. The designer chose a color palette of warm honey, caramel, bronze and celadon green, soft hues that contrast dramatically with white millwork. Instead of the typical porcelain tiles so common in South Florida, floors throughout the home are dark walnut planks. “The owners like the warmth of wood,” Taber says. A sweeping staircase creates a dramatic focal

point in the foyer. In front of the stairs is a large, hand-knotted rug in tones of bronze, celadon and honey, while the wood stairs themselves, which are flanked by elegant railings with white spindles and dark mahogany caps, are carpeted. “They wanted to be sure their elderly dog wouldn’t slip on the stairs, and they also wanted it to be soft on their own feet,” Taber says. Hanging above the staircase is a visually arresting, triple-tiered bronze chandelier with crystal column accents and silk shades in a pale caramel tone. At the top of the stairs, visible from the foyer below, are framed scenes of the Everglades by a local photographer. Two diminutive, semi-circular walnut chests flank the immediate entrance to the foyer. At the back of the space on either side of the staircase are two rectangular chests accented with burl wood marquetry insets, and carved alabaster lamps with shantung silk shades. Above them hang fluted, gold-framed mirrors. “I wanted perfect symmetry when you walk in,” Taber says. nut rods with hand-carved finials frame floor-to-ceiling windows, adding softness and texture to the space. “I wanted to wrap the room in fabric to make it cozy when they’re entertaining, whether it’s for an elegant dinner or an informal brunch,” Taber says. The rectangular, doublepedestal walnut table comfortably seats eight, and cross backs add interest to the matching chairs. Underneath is another hand-knotted rug in shades of pale caramel and celadon green, while a breathtaking bronze chandelier draped in elegant crystals hangs above. A large walnut buffet with marquetry detail has drawers to hold linens, and a ball lamp with a seashell motif adds a South Florida feel. Above the buffet hangs a large, original seascape oil painting, and on the opposite wall between two windows is a small, gold-framed vertical painting of coral-colored flowers, adding a splash of color to the room’s neutral décor.

Floor-to-ceiling, honey-colored silk draperies hanging from walnut rods with hand carved finials frame the dining room windows, adding softness and texture to the space. A rectangular, double-pedestal walnut table comfortably seats eight.

KITCHEN AND FAMILY ROOM Just off the dining room at the entrance to the kitchen is a butler’s pantry for storing non-perishable food, dishes and flatware. A door can be closed to shut off the pantry, keeping any cleared dishes or other messiness out of the sight of diners. In the kitchen itself, Taber refinished the existing dark cabinetry with white lacquer for a bright, fresh look and added new, polished nickel hardware. The couple loves to cook, and a 5-footwide gas range under an arched white hood makes preparing meals convenient. The designer added a wine cooler to the existing large, granite-topped rectangular island, and for seating at casual meals, he chose four swiveling stools with walnut frames, bronze leather upholstery and nail head detailing. Above the island are three large, half-sphere milk glass pendant lights suspended from chains that match

the fixtures’ polished nickel bands. The kitchen is open to the family room, where Taber created a more casual look than in the rest of the home. He began by closing in a window to accommodate a white lacquer wall unit that complements the kitchen cabinets. In the center is a large TV screen, and on both sides are open shelves with glass inserts so recessed lights in the ceiling can shine through. Storage drawers and cabinets are underneath, and above the screen are additional shelves with glass doors. Slipcovers that can be easily washed protect two comfortable sofas from doggy footprints. There’s a pair for each sofa— one camel and one aqua—so one set can be used while the other is being laundered. The glass top of a wood coffee table is also easy to clean. On the floor is a rug in a blend of caramel, aqua and celadon.

A coat of white lacquer gave the existing kitchen cabinetry a fresh look. Swivel stools with walnut frames and bronze upholstery offer seating at the center island.

THE LIVING ROOM On the opposite side of the foyer is the living room. Draperies framing the windows match those in the dining room, creating continuity between the two spaces that are visible to each other. On the wall between the windows are two small, framed original oil paintings. The centerpiece of the room is a wood-burning fireplace with a classic white marble facing and a custom-made iron screen. Two celadon green, Asian-style porcelain accessories accent the fireplace’s white mantle, while above it hangs an oil painting done in soft colors depicting a nature

scene. Twin built-in shelving units flanking the fireplace provide space to display family photos, books and collectibles, and cabinetry underneath offers storage. In front of the fireplace, two comfortable matching sofas upholstered in cream chenille and accented with caramel and celadon pillows face each other. Between them is a large, square walnut coffee table with Sheraton legs and hidden drawers. Underneath is a hand-knotted wool-and-silk rug in shades of celadon green and caramel that blend with the colors in the accent pillows, while an antique bronze chandelier with crystal accents

and cream-colored silk shades hangs from the ceiling. Two ottomans are conveniently stored beneath a walnut console table behind one of the sofas. THE HALLWAY A hallway with twin shelving units flanking French doors to the pool and patio runs behind the foyer from the living room to the kitchen and family room. On the hallway floor is a custommade, hand-knotted runner that mirrors the look of the rug in the foyer, and suspended from the ceiling is a twotiered, seeded glass light fixture framed in bronze. UPSTAIRS The upstairs master suite has a cherry wood half poster bed dressed with a tone-on-tone caramel-color jacquard-patterned cover and pillow shams. A TV is mounted on a cantilever arm in an art frame set into the wall. Crystal lamps top twin bachelor chests,

and a carved bureau provides storage. At the foot of the bed is a bench with mahogany legs, rolled arms and chenille upholstery. The second upstairs bedroom is done with robin’s egg blue walls, white furniture and white bed coverings with periwinkle accents to create a seaside feel. The third bedroom is furnished with family antiques that include an oak bed, armoire and hand-carved hope chest. A desk built into the closet allows the room to be used as a home office, but the door can be closed when guests use the room. A TIMELESS LIVING SPACE Taber created a timeless living space that complements the classic architecture of the house, fulfilling the owners’ longtime dream of living in a plantationstyle home filled with rich woods, antiques and traditional furnishings. It’s a design that can remain elegant, beautiful and comfortable for decades.

T

hey say timing is everything. Sara Balas Densen was with her client, looking at a more than 5,000-square-foot waterfront home in Juno Beach. Densen, a real estate agent with The Balas Group/ReMax, was trying to convince her client that this was one of the best homes on the market. In fact, Densen and her husband, a film producer, had spent months looking at the property online themselves, wishful thinking as the price continued to drop. “And then my client, out of the blue, turns to me and says, ‘This house is really meant for your family,’” she recalls. At first, Densen brushed off the comment. But it replayed in her mind. Densen and her husband had recently completed an overhaul of a “short sale” home purchased in 2013. The home had literally been gutted. Were they ready to start a new project? “It was not an easy decision,” Densen says. “Literally, we had put our blood, sweat and tears into our first home. But this Juno Beach home really was perfect. I was torn, do we start all over?” The first home’s design had been adroitly handled by Krista Watterworth Alterman of Krista + Home. “In the end, we made an offer, called

Krista and said, ‘Here we go again,’” Densen says. Watterworth Alterman was ready. “What was really nice about working with them a second time was their high level of trust in me,” she says. “They wanted a similar vibe to their previous home, but a bit more sophisticated.” Along with the spectacular views, the house already came with solid architectural bones, including an open floor plan, a recently renovated kitchen, a 25-foot vaulted ceiling lined in oak wood and a light-filled cupola. This would not be a gut job. The challenge, though, was channeling the Densens’ casual coastal sensibilities. “We started by giving the home a modern and fresh look by adding shiplap throughout the home,” Watterman Alterman says. “And [we] built a soft neutral

palette for the walls.” The living room’s relaxed feel features a Swaim Brewster sofa flanked by Lazar Soho side chairs. The inherited built-in media center was re-accessorized with carefully curated curiosities, including a spinner vase and sea urchin ceramic platters from Global Views. A lucite console table next to the front door is barely noticeable, but it provides the perfect spot to drop off the day’s flotsam. Opposite the living room is the open concept kitchen with white Shaker cabinets and a herringbone marble backsplash. The large center island, topped with a light gray, quartzite counter, was matched up with Duralee’s Dover stools that Watterworth Alterman covered in gray, faux-leather fabric. She also built shelves between the kitchen and pantry for extra storage.

gulfstreammediagroup.com

“The goal was to create a space that is timeless and comfortable, but with luxurious touches throughout,” Watterworth Alterman says. “Marble and natural stone are used in the entire home. Luxurious, high-quality fabrics are all present in the upholstered furniture, pillows and drapery. And of course, all lighting choices are upscale.” In fact, the dining room’s white beaded chandelier is perhaps Densen’s favorite objet d’art, purchased from Pineapple, Palms, Etc. Watterworth Alterman added a double pedestal dining table from Lexington with mix-and-match dining chairs upholstered in bone-fabric. Since all the main rooms of the home look out toward the backyard, the floor-toceiling infinity pocket doors give the home openness and plenty of natural light. In fact, the last room is more like a lanai. On one

side is a sitting area with a fireplace decorated in a herringbone pattern. The room features Serena and Lily side tables, Lee Industries’ furniture in neutral colors and throw pillows in sea mist tones by Kravet. Similarly hued drapes with a swirl motif add femininity, yet keep the vibe beachy and approachable. Plenty of wood, brass and white ceramic accessories fill the shelves. On the other side of the open lanai room, Watterworth Alterman carved out a space for the kids. She dubbed it the “art room.” As the parent of two young children herself, Watterworth Alterman says she taps into what kids love when designing their spaces. “I also listen to my own inner child,” she says. A Pottery Barn work desk, Tribecca Home bookshelves and plenty of budding artists’ work complete the look. “It has become an essential part of our home that I never knew we needed,” Densen says. “A place for the kids to paint, color, do homework and entertain their friends and where I can keep a watchful eye.” Designing a patio that spoke to an active lifestyle was also paramount. “This family entertains a lot, and they wanted room for the children to play outside,” Watterworth Alterman says. “Since this lot was so large, it was important for us to find ways to create intimate spaces.” A custom ipe wood table that seats 20 was ordered. Instead of chairs, two benches create a seamless look. The Densen family also built an outdoor kitchen and a cozy fire pit flanked by Adirondack chairs. Loungers, couches, hanging cocoons and even a tire swing tied to an old oak tree fill the yard. There is also plenty of grassy land left untouched for barefoot little ones. The children’s bedrooms, which also take advantage of the views, maintain a sense of wonderment. “I try to design children’s spaces that will last over time, something they can grow into,” Watterworth Alterman says. To wit, the girl’s room features black-and-white Schumacher botanical

As for the master bedroom, a palette was chosen that reminded Densen of the old bedroom she left behind. “I wanted it to feel familiar,” Densen says. icking favorites can be a hitor-miss proposition, especially in games with uncertain outcomes, like gambling and horse racing. In home design, however, showing a little favoritism can go a long way. When asked what decorative accouterment she sets higher than the rest, Olga Adler doesn’t mince her words. “Light fixtures,” she says. “A great light fixture can make a room.” Standing inside her client’s sunspackled living room in Delray Beach, Adler, a well-known Westport, Connecticut, interior designer who opened her Palm Beach County outpost, Maresol Interiors, in 2017, motions to a cluster of silvery orbs dangling overhead. Rather than a single pendant, she suspended three together in varying lengths. The net result simultaneously dazzles and floats the eye toward the entrance hall’s vaulted ceiling. Nestled alongside the bioethanol fireplace, she grouped a pair of upholstered sofas around a trio of chrome tables that morph into an ultra-modern coffee table when fitted together. The Masland Studio hand-knotted wool and silk area rug was selected for its vintage vibe. “That’s how we break in the new,” Adler explains, “with pieces that are

more established and lived-in looking.” In the foyer, a gold-glazed, spiky wooden mirror suffused with subtle ethnicity stands guard over an iron x-leg framed console table with a faux shagreen top. Piecing together antipodal elements offers a pop of surprise when guests walk in. “I’m always mixing things to make them a little more curious,” she says. Built by Mahoney Homes in 2016, the two-story, 6,527-square-foot spec house already had paneling, millwork and flooring in place, so Adler added a sensorial heartbeat with craftsman-made furnishings and vibrant artworks by Delray Beach shutterbug Debra Somerville. The homeowner, a high-powered, commercial real estate investor, had originally hired Adler to freshen up the interiors in his Greenwich, Connecticut, home. Impressed by her work, a triumph of neutrals

and textures, they reconnected again when he had settled on a contemporary property designed by famed architect Randall Stofft near Delray Beach’s Seagate Beach Club. “I thought Olga’s style would be really well-suited for Florida and look at the result,” he says, motioning to the grouping of statement pieces around his home office, such as a stainless steel desk with a brown lizard-embossed leather top and an Eames executive chair Adler scooped up from Design Within Reach in West Palm Beach. Giving her the blessing of free reign, the homeowner had only four requests: that the home feel clean and airy; imbue a coastal, beach-house style; be conducive for hosting large gatherings and entertaining family and friends; and prove to be petfriendly. He also wanted the entire project completed in three months. Nowhere does this home feel more in

sync than on the covered patio and pool deck, where guests can sun worship or cool off in the pool’s cerulean depths. Furnishings like a wicker daybed with an open-weave canopy and a weathered teak sofa and armchairs with bright throw pillows were purposely kept sparse, so visitors wouldn’t feel impeded from walking around and mingling. Back inside, the crisp aesthetic is coupled with tactile, indoor-outdoor Holly Hunt fabrics that pull in a vibrant palette of blues and greens from the great outdoors. Adler punctuated the dining room with a 7-foot teak veneer table and tealcolored side chairs, both from Bernhardt Interiors, to accommodate gastronomic get-togethers of any size. The casual, dine-in kitchen, previously furnished with marble countertops, custom, grain wood and lacquer cabinetry, a glass and porcelain wood look tile backsplash, custom wine built-ins, and Thermador appliances, was given new glass light fixtures and adjustable leather stools in a creamy tone for a relaxed feel. In the family room, which flows seamlessly into the kitchen and dining room, she weaved in a Palecek lava coffee table and two asymmetrical armchairs for a whimsical touch. A Belgian track arm U-chaise sectional from Restoration Hardware makes an irresistible choice for kicking back and watching TV or enjoying a siesta after a long afternoon in the sun. One of the home’s most striking light displays hangs above the underlit wood and glass-paneled staircase that connects to the second floor. At the top of the landing, a gallery-like loft space leads to three bedrooms and a bonus room the homeowner uses as a gym. In the master bedroom, Adler cobbled a tranquil and Zen-like retreat with only a few choice furnishings, a departure from the homeowner’s Connecticut home which, Adler says, is “much more

full of stuff.” Floor-to-ceiling drapes in a warm herringbone pattern and reminiscent of African patchwork, bring a masculine touch and a seismic gild-finished pendant holds court above a tailored, midcentury-inspired sleigh bed. Remote-controlled shades, featured throughout the home, were also installed. The room is gorgeous by day, but the designer’s favorite part comes after the sun goes down. She says, “The entire room is cast in this soft, dreamy glow.” Chrome and crystal table lamps and rich walnut side tables hold personal effects and the arbitrary doggy treat. table molded in the likeness of a teak root. For Olga, luxury and comfort are king. “There’s no luxury without comfort,” she stresses. “And if it’s not comfortable, then don’t call it a luxurious home.” To prove her point, she holds up a large bed pillow wrapped in a tactile fabric from Pierre Frey that feels softer than a baby’s bottom and sells for $450 a yard. But not everything in her homes is expensive. “I’m always mixing a little bit of retail with a little bit of custom and a little bit of supercustom,” she says. For Adler, it all boils down to designing a space that feels genuine, comfortable and serene.

(left and bottom right) Neutral colors and textures play up the tropical views in this guest room. (top right) Chrome and crystal table lamps and rich walnut side tables accessorize the master bedroom.

Across from the master, a pair of bedrooms function as cozy escapes for drop-in visitors and invited guests. Functional pieces like oatmealcolored headboards with matching toss pillows are matched with Westin’s famous Heavenly Beds and paired with rectilinear grasscloth nightstands from Bungalow 5 in shades of navy and white. The designer faced a serious design dilemma when a wall in the guest bedroom that faced the outdoor deck sported a window in the exact place she wanted to place the bed. “It was really peeving me off because I’m very symmetrical,” she recalls, laughing. “I knew the bed had to go there and you had this window

that was kind of, smack!, right there.” She solved the problem by hanging a lined version of the sheer fabric she hung on another window in the room. “I created a wall of fabric,” she says. “Now it has this beautiful softness and it’s more feminine.” On another wall, she placed an acrylic console from CB2 that serves as a vanity or a desk. An antique mirror, which once hung in the homeowner’s childhood home, is painted with fish and other sea life in rich shades of blue, yellow and pink. “We wanted to showcase it as a small homage to his history and family,” Adler says. For symmetry, she fronted a neighboring wall with a coastal photograph by Debra Somerville in coinciding casts. The second bedroom boasts a Juliet balcony with inviting viewpoints of the manicured front lawn below and a neighboring property across the street. “I really love that this [balcony] overlooks the street,” she says. “It doesn’t bother me that it’s kind of exposed.” Quirky fish profiles adorn the wall behind the bed and framed John Speed maps, a gift to the homeowner from his grandfather, hang in an impromptu sitting area tucked in the corner. After three months, the home was finished. “It had everything he could want, from dishes to bath towels,” Adler remembers. “I don’t think he realized how ready it was going to be until he arrived with his suitcase. It was ‘toothbrush-ready.’ All he had to do was unpack and go to bed.” Asked which room he favors most, the client doesn’t miss a beat. “Everything,” he says. “And the neighborhood’s great and far enough away from Atlantic Avenue’s craziness. I wake up with a smile on my face every day.”

t seems today that everybody wants to save the world. And who can blame us? Environmental awareness—and warnings—has reached an apex. We’re all cognizant of our impacts on the planet and we’re willing to minimize them. But how? Amid the noise of pious politicians and sermonizing celebrities, the public is left to decipher how best to actually, practically make a meaningful difference for the environment in daily life. Fortunately, Anthony and Suzanne Kissling committed to this very goal when constructing their Palm City home. Their handpicked team of local professionals—largely new to the intricacies such an undertaking entailed—each contributed in ways subtle and overt to easing the eco impacts. The results: a home that preserves energy and water while also prolonging elegance, style and comfort, earning the literal gold-standard of green building. The Kisslings’ home in the Floridian is the first residential property in Martin County to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Some of the comprehensive requirements for LEED Gold (rankings include Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum) remain beyond reach for many homeowners. But not so for a number of the practices, techniques and innovations involved. Many, team leaders share, are readily available. Even if an official certification isn’t, a cleaner, greener conscience still is. Such is the trend the Kisslings hope to influence. “It’s about that ripple effect,” Suzanne Kissling says.

CLEAR VISION Longtime friends, colleagues and cocollaborators on countless past projects, interior designer Dianne Davant and landscape architect Tom Lucido share the same philosophy on client services. “We aim to make their vision come to life,” Lucido says. “They had a vision of building a totally sustainable home. We were approached at the get-go knowing that we had to do a lot of research to effectively navigate the process.” Such navigation requires a guide. Enter Kyle and Harmony Abney, who own the Palm City-based green building consulting firm Abney + Abney Green Solutions. Whether serving as an independent contractor on behalf of the architect, the builder or the homeowner, Green Solutions bears the credentials to score points and provide third-party verification for LEED certification—the internationally recognized standard for green building authentication. CARROTS AND THE OCCASIONAL STICK While Delray Beach and Miami Beach institute various LEED requirements— with Miami Beach mandating LEED Gold for any project over 7,000 square feet—most municipalities adopt the incentive approach. Complaint applicants might enjoy expedited reviews or reduced permit costs. The industry is still warming to the value of LEED construction. So the Abneys—who generally rate commercial or multifamily residential projects—face frequent commutes south. “We don’t have a lot of work in Martin or on the Treasure Coast,” says Kyle Abney, a third-generation contractor and builder who studied green building in college. “Most is in Miami or Fort Lauderdale.” Grateful for the gridlock respite, the Palm City resident’s proximity to the Kissling home may not have counted toward satisfying the letter of any LEED requirements, but it certainly honored the spirit. That’s because of the five fundamental factors that determine green

out the first floor. “Everybody had to think, ‘Well, if we did it this way, we could get two points,’” she recalls. “So it was fun. Everybody was involved.” Points accrued around every imaginable detail, from the strength and applications of sealants to the paints devoid of volatile organic compounds.

FOAM SWEET HOME The emphasis on energy efficiency was poured, literally, into the construction process. With Peter and Maria Stromberg of GarciaStromberg serving as the architects, Bill Daly, vice president for the Hobe Sound-based Carrere General Contractors, was the project manager. Daly added the spray foam insulation icynene into the concrete-block construction. Often used in attics and not uncommon in the walls of high-end homes, icynene improves overall energy efficiently. Highperformance windows added insulation, reducing heat loss (and electric bills). The extra fortification offered additional benefits, Kyle Abney notes. “It was a concrete block that was locally produced, but there’s also a durability element,” he says. “The longer something lasts, the less you have to replace it and throw it out.” CLAIMING FUTURE BY RECLAIMING PAST Items reused rather than discarded weigh favorably, too. “There was lots of reclaimed wood, including reclaimed cypress in the mantle,” Kyle Abney says. Crediting Jefferson Woodworking of Palm City for much of the sourcing, Suzanne Kissling also cited reclaimed heart pine composing ample flooring and Spanish porcelain, a sustainable source, through-

gulfstreammediagroup.com

OUTER AND INNER BEAUTY Meanwhile, Lucido and Davant ensured the look and feel of the exterior flowed naturally inside the home. “We collaborated with Dianne and her team to make sure the materials related well when you walk into the entrance of the home,” Lucido says. Davant invited the outer beauty in, with living room doors pocketing away to accentuate views of the zero-edge pool and St. Lucie River. “They wanted to feel like they were part of the river,” she says. For overall style, the Kisslings sought “something very different and avant-garde,” Davant says. “It’s a warm contemporary,” adds Priscilla Hyatt Councill, an interior designer with Davant & Associates who played a key role in the effort. The only energy the home overflows with is the positive kind, thanks to the atmosphere Lucido and Davant created. Otherwise, several features and fixtures ensure energy efficiency. Photovoltaic panels power much of the house. Add in low-flow toilets and faucets and Energy Star bathroom fans. A recirculating system in the bathroom means hot water on demand. And the solar-powered water heater counts among the upgrades available to a broader base of consumers, Daly says. “You can get a solar-powered water heater for less,” he says. “I wouldn’t mind putting in one of these.” BACK TO THE FUTURE Some simple eco-upgrades sidestep modern technology entirely by returning to earlier design principles, Kyle Abney says. “I’m a big fan of fundamental things: deep overhangs, front porches all the way around the house, designed for keeping the house naturally cooler,” he says. Whether in returning to traditional design techniques, replacing non-native plants with drought-tolerant Florida-friendly vegetation or adopting advanced energy-saving technologies, the principles of LEED certification remain more widely available even if the certifications themselves do not. A plaque on the Kisslings’ doorbell announces the home’s LEED status. It serves as a starting point for an important conversation about sustainability, Suzanne Kissling says. As friends and visitors ask questions, she informs on the details involved, the resources properly used and the human resources—right nearby—available to help create a wider ripple effect of environmental stewardship. “It’s important that people know we have talent in Martin County that can get this done,” she says.

hen interior designer Maura Rossi accepted a commission for a home in Valencia Reserve in Boynton Beach, the clients told her they wanted something completely different than their other homes in Boston and Martha’s Vineyard. The retired couple bought a place in South Florida to be closer to a son attending school in Miami. They desired a calming, sophisticated neutral palette that would also provide a clean backdrop to showcase pieces from their art collection. The one-story, 2,700-square-foot, zero-lot-line home with three bedrooms and 2.5 baths was new construction, and the owners had chosen beige marble flooring with black accents offered by the developer. For the rest of the home, Rossi used a color palette of tans, ivories and taupe, with silver and gold accents to add sparkle. She also custom framed new artwork and reframed existing pieces to be displayed so they complement the new décor, and she incorporated graceful oval shapes in fabrics and furnishings throughout the home. Serendipitously, Maura’s twin sister, landscape architect Maureen Smith, designed the yard. “The owners wanted a design that re-

minded them they were in sunny Florida, and not in Boston,” Smith says. She used multi-trunked palms, hibiscus and other winter-blooming plants to create a lush, layered landscape that provides privacy but doesn’t block the view of a lake. THE FOYER Rossi began her design by replacing the plain double front doors with a custom pair featuring etched leaded glass inserts. “The doors are pretty much a piece of art themselves,” Rossi says. To set off the decorative doors, she applied dark stain to the surrounding millwork. To create further visual interest in the small foyer, she installed a large, vertical mirror, painting its wood frame in a mix of gold, silver and bronze. Under the mirror is an eye-catching

credenza covered in pillowed silver leaf, crowned by a crystal lamp with a rain motif and a creamy silk shade with silver banding. On the other side of the space is an original Picasso painting. A stunning, globeshaped amber crystal light fixture hangs from the ceiling. THE LIVING ROOM The foyer opens to the living room, where Rossi installed ceiling coffers, framed in light and dark molding and finished inside with pearlized opalescent flecks paper. The elegant chandelier with gracefully curved arms is made from handblown amber Venetian glass. Adding texture and softness to the floor is a wool-and-silk rug with a level-loop pile in gold and a cut-pile pattern in off white. Floor-to-ceiling draperies are a soft gold woven fabric embroidered with gleaming gold thread. Sheers between them soften light coming in from outside, and a dark wood rod pocket conceals the hardware. A wall unit with a walnut finish houses a large TV screen hidden by a painting that rolls up. Flanking the screen are glassfronted shelves with oval overlays, ideal for displaying the owner’s collection of blown glass; underneath are storage cabinets. Wall sconces with twisted, horn-shaped black enamel bases and rectangular silk shades cast an ambient glow and accent chairs on either side have oval-shaped frames and upholstery with large-scale flower patterns in taupe, gold and cream. Dark wood drink tables beside them feature oval-shaped bases and antique mirrored tops, one round and one square. “I didn’t want them to be matchymatchy,” Rossi says. In the main seating group, twin sofas upholstered in a nubby, cream-colored fabric have slender sloped arms and a walnut band at the bottom. A damask pattern on a taupe background with raised silver embroidery lends style to the accent pillows, while high-gloss end tables have gracefully curved bases and tops with Macassar ebony inserts.

A partial screen with a wood frame and circular metal inserts defines the dining room. The mahogany table has a fluted pedestal base, and chairs feature ovalshaped backs accented with an X pattern.

Behind one of the sofas is a table with a walnut finish top supported by several narrow, curved taupe legs that conjure an image of tree trunks. Two taupe club chairs covered in mohair and cotton velvet are accented with ribbed gold and taupe pillows edged in beaded trim, and an oval bench is upholstered in gold chenille with raised gold threads. In the center of the seating group is a large, rectangular glasstopped coffee table with antiqued gold legs and frame. THE KITCHEN A dark wood peninsula with a granite top separates the living room from the kitchen. Stools beside it have dark wood legs and curved arms that complement the slope of the nearby sofa arms. Seats and backs are upholstered in gold, taupe and cream damask-patterned fabric. Suspended from the ceiling are handblown, cylinder-shaped amber Venetian glass pendants with whimsically spiky surfaces. In the kitchen itself, draperies have a creamy background with an amber box chain pattern, while amber wave tiles create a dramatic backsplash. The casual eating area features a round, glass-topped table with an art deco-inspired wood base; silk cushions on the four woven chairs are embellished with a subtle zebra-striped pattern. A custom-made center island, lower than the counters and meant as a serving space for entertaining rather than a work area, features enameled taupe legs, an amber Cambria stone top and high-gloss Macassar ebony storage drawers. THE DINING ROOM A partial screen with a dark wood frame and open circular metal insets defines the formal dining room, which has softly gleaming damaskpatterned taupe wallcoverings. Silver threads bring a subtle shine to

the draperies, while dark wood frames the mirrored, flecked paper interiors of ceiling coffers. A delicate Venetian glass chandelier with gracefully curved arms hangs from the center coffer. The mahogany table has a square, fluted pedestal base and a round, high-gloss top with a starburst pattern veneer radiating from the center. Wood chairs have oval backs with a center X pattern, and curved legs and arms. Both chair backs and cushions are upholstered in woven fabric that sparkles with silver threads. Silver accents and a stainless rail on top add interest to the walnut buffet flanked by a pair of wingback chairs upholstered in Champagne-colored silk. A sunburst mirror finished in silver and handblown Venetian glass sconces are displayed above.

THE DEN On one side of the dining room is the den, where walls are clad in tan linen with washed silver highlights, and handmade silver foil with a raked plaster overlay covers the ceiling. Draperies are double layers of blue-gray cotton and a brown, open-weave fabric. A rug with a level-loop tan background and cut-pile pattern in blue, white and gray adds more texture to the space, and on the ceiling is a drum-shaped light fixture with a silk shade enclosed in an iron frame painted silver. The blue-gray leather sofa offers comfortable seating, and end tables hold lamps with a silverpainted finish that mimics chrome. A long, rectangular ottoman covered in woven fabric accented with brushed chrome nail heads can be used as a table or a footstool. screen, floating shelves and twin built-in desks. Desk chairs upholstered in linen accented by a pattern in raised cotton velvet have dark wood frames. Polished chrome sconces hang above. POWDER ROOM Black opalescent mosaic tiles clad two walls in the powder room, and a stunning, floor-to-ceiling floral mosaic in off-white, gold and tan lends drama to the other two. Silver leaf covers the ceiling and crown molding. The legs of a black enamel vanity are painted silver, while an elegant blue, glass vessel sink with bubble detailing crowns the Cambria stone top. Matching the sink are blue disks on a crystal chandelier. THE MASTER SUITE Elegant mother-of-pearl wallcovering gleams behind the dark scalloped headboard of the four-

poster in the master bedroom, while the other walls are covered in tan folded paper with painted silver accents. A bowl-shaped, Venetian beaded-glass chandelier hangs from the ceiling, and a rug with a blue level-pile background and a raised lotus vine pattern in tan silk adds texture and softness to the floor. Glass lamps with ivory drum shades top dark wood nightstands, and white swirl textured draperies with a blue-gray accent fabric on the bottom provide a backdrop for two off-white club chairs near the windows. At the foot of the bed, which is dressed in an ivory and tan covering and coordinating shams, is a dark wood bench with graceful arms, a curved back and a cushion covered in swirled cotton velvet. On the wall across from the bed is a dark wood chest with a TV screen above. A slender, rectangular desk has a custom-made chair beside it, while above it hangs a whimsical white wall sculpture depicting the relaxed figure of a woman. Two large white pots holding spherical boxwood plants are eye-catching accessories. In the master bath, a taupe and ivory stone mosaic on the front of the tub creates a focal point. The taupe and ivory wallcovering has a damask pattern, while a wide fabric valence above a glass block wall over the tub is made of taupe fabric shot through with silver threads. The box-shaped crystal chandelier complements similarly shaped fixtures over the medium-toned wood vanities. A makeup chair has an oval back and woven leather seat with a taupe opalescent finish, and a shiny, beaded vinyl cushion tops a center bench with curved taupe legs. GUEST ROOM In one of the guest rooms is a platform bed with brushed nickel nail heads and a tufted headboard. On the floor is a nylon shag rug with a tight-cut pile tan background and a loose-pile flower pattern in a light rust tone. A painted ivory bench with chrome feet is upholstered in floral-patterned chenille. A DESIGN FOR SOUTH FLORIDA Rossi created a design that is elegant and sophisticated, yet ideal for a casual South Florida lifestyle. Surrounding the owners with neutral colors, soft textures, comfortable furnishings and graceful shapes, the stylish interior is sure to help the owners forget cold northern winters.

The classics never go out of style. Virginia Perez, CKD, CBD was entrusted to bring a touch of retro Cuban charm to a lovely home. The homeowners wanted a streamlined vintage look and a tasteful nod to their Cuban roots. An angled wall was removed to open the usable space and create a large navy blue island with prep sink and bar stools. The homeowner’s cooktop area was the perfect place to create a focal point.

After attending the prestigious private Catholic law school Saint Thomas University, he opened a small law practice and began litigating injury cases. After litigating for many years, Nicolas found his passion in two very distinct types of law: Motorcycle Injury/Accident Cases – Owning a bike himself and knowing the rules of the road gives him the unique knowledge that takes attorneys years to acquire. Nursing Home Abuse/Protecting the Elderly – Due to his personal experience with a close family member who became a victim of abuse and substandard care, he has dedicated himself to protecting those who have been injured and/or neglected at the hands of others.

here is a man who once ran for president who is only remembered today because he once ran for president. Although he did not say it at the time, it was later revealed that he knew he did not have an Afghan’s chance of being elected, but he ran because he thought it would double his speaking fees. In the current political context, that is about as good a reason as any for the many people we never heard of who are exploring a run for the nation’s highest office. Almost all the unknowns are Democrats, which suggests they think that after the present occupant, anybody can be elected. With a few exceptions, these people have not formally announced. They simply say they are exploring the possibility of running because so many people tell them they could make America great again. We also cynically suspect they figure they could also get some campaign contributions, which they will figure out a way to use in the next city council race. Not to speak of speaking fees. Part of the lure of exploring higher office is that these would-be candidates always seem to get immediate recognition. As this rant was being prepared, the Miami Herald reported that among the unknowns who are exploring running for president is the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, a place nobody has ever heard of unless you follow college football. His name is Pete Buttigieg, and the Herald reported that he “received a full day of coverage from cable news networks and plenty of ink from news outlets when he announced that he was launching an exploratory committee this month.” The Herald also wrote that closer to home, Wayne Messam, the little-known mayor of Miramar, a town in western 160

Broward County, is testing the water. This man is little remembered as a player on Florida State’s 1993 championship football team. To be accurate, the report said he is “pondering” entering the race. Pondering is a preliminary step before actually “exploring” the idea of a candidacy. ccordingly, we are pondering exploring the idea of exploring entering this crowded field, largely because everyone seems to want a fresh face, no matter how ill qualified, and we think we could make the country great again and attract some nice campaign contributions to boot. We are a rigid conservative, believe firmly in the constitution and its original intent, even if we don’t know what that intent was. We also believe in the nine commandments. The only one we doubt is the one against stealing. Searching for something to set us apart from the many others seeking contributions to explore a run for the highest office, it occurs that we were almost born to explore. Both our high

school and college were nicknamed the Explorers. It seems that back in the 1920s a Philadelphia sports writer thought schools named La Salle (there is one in Miami) were named after the man who claimed the Mississippi River for France. That would be René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle (Bobby for short). He has a nice street named for him in Chicago. However, the schools are named for St. Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers religious order, who came up with the idea of educating disadvantaged boys— a group into which we fit naturally. That by itself should get us the support of liberals. We also favor Medicare and higher education for all. In fact, everything should be free, including cocktails in South Florida bars. That way we would not need to pay for anything and could do away with taxes. That should be popular with those with unearned income of $1 million or more a year. And those are the same people who ponder ways to blow their money and tend to support hopeless candidates just because they exist. Finally, we will devoutly work to take money out of politics, with the exception of campaign financing. We would explore means of controlling the pernicious influence of money, with graduated tax exemptions for contributions to those pondering, exploring and ultimately actually running for the highest office in the land. We can’t speak for all the other candidates, but we can assure our supporters that if we got enough money for merely pondering and exploring a race for the top, we would withdraw gracefully, and leave the world as the perfect place we know today. gulfstreammediagroup.com
