Nothing signals the coming of season like the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show—and I’m thrilled to see that this year’s event will be held in its usual physical form, starting October 28.

If it seems like the beginnings of a return to “normal,” that’s an accurate perception. FLIBS president Andrew Doole argues that with the proper distancing and safety measures, which will be strictly enforced at the show, an event of this scale doesn’t have to be a health threat. CUSTOM Creations The culmination of Ingrid Schindall’s love of paper, ink, and craft is on full display inside IS Projects in Fort Lauderdale’s FATVillage. Described as a public-access printmaking and book arts studio, IS Projects has grown to house a robust assortment of equipment and materials that area creatives can use to further their practice.

Schindall’s boutique letterpress printing, screen printing, and bookbinding shop aptly named Nocturnal Press—an ode to her nights staying up late in the studio at the Maryland Institute College of Art—is also part of IS Projects. This half of her business handles orders for things like custom invita-

tions and posters. “This is the completion of my vision of what the space would be,” says the Delray Beach native. “I always wanted it to be a space that had printing facilities, fine art collaborations, and residency spaces.”

Visitors can peek into the facility’s inner workings and learn more about the assortment of letterpresses—some date back to the early 1800s and 1900s—during offhours. 5 QUESTIONS WITH INGRID SCHINDALL

What brings you the most joy in your work? My background comes from collaborating with different artists who are maybe not as familiar with this medium as I am. We want to inspire artists to explore this medium and inspire collectors to be interested in this medium. It’s really a process of cultivating a love of book arts in South Florida, which has been my mission the whole time.

What made you want to return to South Florida? I was living in Baltimore and had a small studio where I was making journals and selling them at art fairs, which was great. Baltimore wasn’t really the right place for me. I started coming down with a suitcase of books and would do craft fairs at different places.

I tried Philadelphia, Miami, and I found one here in FATVillage called the Night Owl Market. I then found out about Art Walk. That was April 2014. I signed my lease on the spot. I wound up getting the keys in August and took September to move in and opened at that September Art Walk.

How do you view letterpress printing today? I think right now what printing and physical objects are going through in printed word and printed images is not necessarily a death, but something that is more valued.

The act of printing a book on paper instead of seeing an e-book implies that there is some

Can you tell us about the artist book publishing program, Existent Books?

Once or twice a year we invite an artist to the studio and collaborate on a book project.

Some of those artists have worked in a book format before, and some have not. The residency we just finished up was with Onajide Shabaka, a Miami-based artist. We also collaborated with Michelle Miller, a painter in West Palm.

What kinds of workshops do you host?

The ones we’re developing now are for leather travel journals. We started with just workshops with easily accessible supplies.

Paper marbling is a really fun one, as well as jelly plate printing, which is a type of printing you can do at home easily; you don’t need a press and can get beautiful results. (Workshops were only available virtually as of press time. Check the IS Projects website for the latest on when in-person meetings will return.)

While some see crystals as merely pretty stones, Khatie Krisztian says otherwise. Diagnosed with PTSD as a teenager, she dealt with panic and anxiety attacks and had trouble sleeping. A friend suggested she buy a crystal to aid in her emotional and spiritual healing. “The world looked new,” she recalls. “There were new ways to look at problems instead of being overwhelmed by them.”

Her first purchase was a fluorite stone, which is believed to bring focus, concentration, and balance and help individuals work through complex issues. Fascinated, Krisztian drove to a mine and brought back pounds of crystals that she later turned into necklaces for family and friends. She eventually began selling them at a few local stores and decided to turn jewelry making into a full-time business in 2018. Her storefront, The Blithe Co.,

first set up roots in the MASS District but landed firmly in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea in August. Krisztian chose “Blithe” because of its happy, lighthearted connotations. “The crystals are alleviating your stressors,” she notes. “They’re welcoming love into your life.”

The boutique is open and airy with a splash of aqua that brings attention to the products. Patrons can shop Krisztian’s array of rings, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and earrings all handmade in 14-karat gold or 14-karat plated silver. Himalayan salt lamps for cleansing, smoky quartz and amethyst clusters, and selenite stones are just a few other crystal specialties on offer, as well as goods by local makers. Highlights include Bungalow Drift macramé wall hangings, homemade soaps, teas, candles, skincare, and more. Krisztian also plans to offer weekly workshops in tandem with the artisan creators. espite the challenges of operating amid a pandemic, Young at Art Museum (YAA) in Davie has mobilized its programming and turned to the web to bring cultural education to Broward County students. Although YAA was forced to cease in-person operations in mid-March, it has continued its mission to enrich the community through interactive arts experiences in the form of YAA at Home projects and virtual tours, as well as YAA on the Go events.

“A lot of this programming that we’re doing is stuff that we knew we wanted to do anyway, so we’ve been able to take advantage of the timeframe to do it so that we have an infrastructure in perpetuity,” notes Zack Spechler, director of exhibitions and operations.

YAA has been uploading weekly activities, designed by professional artists, that kids can easily complete at home. Highlights include optical pattern coloring pages by Jen Stark and instructions for making shoebox

Some of the YAA at Home activities coordinate with the museum’s special exhibitions, which are available to view online.

Two new shows are “While We Were Out,” featuring student works created during the pandemic, and “WonderWalls,” a site-specific installation of artist Peter Symons’ “colorshifting experiments.” In a statement on the piece, Symons explains that he looked to social distancing guidelines as a design principle, starting with a pattern on the floor that uses 6-foot spacing and then ripples out to interact with other points and spread up onto the walls.

In addition to this art programming, YAA has taken steps to support underserved children and families during this difficult time. In June, the museum organized a Driving Graduation Party to deliver works that ArtREACH students made at YAA during the school year, as well as food, toys, masks, and more. The following month, the YAA on the Go bus traveled to low-income communities to distribute mask design and art kits and other necessities.

What about social distancing?

We’re making that a little easier by widening the docks by up to 10 feet in the busiest places.

That means the walkways by the Bahia Mar entrance, for example, will be up to 30 feet wide. In the exhibition tents, we are widening the aisles and adding directional markers for one-way walking, just like in the supermarket.

And all seating in the cafés, VIP lounges, concession areas, and cocktail barges will be set up to social distancing guidelines.

Last year, FLIBS had more than 100,000 attendees over five days. What’s your crystal ball telling you about this year’s show?

Last year’s attendance was down because of the heatwave that hit us during the show.

But even though fewer people came, boat and equipment sales were actually up. For serious buyers, there is simply no better place to look at boats and comparison shop. Yes, attendance this year will inevitably be down simply because fewer overseas guests will travel because of quarantining when they return home. But it’s worth remembering that fewer visitors does make for a better experience for those who do come. Who doesn’t like more space?

What impact does FLIBS have for the local community and the marine industry in general?

It’s huge. For many of our exhibitors, orders from the show typically amount to 30 percent of their annual sales. All the local hotels, who’ve gone through a terrible spring and

summer due to COVID-19, really look to the show to boost their revenues. And think of all the small businesses, from local restaurants to shops to even Uber drivers; the show means a real boost to their bottom line. FLIBS is a major economic driver benefiting the marine industry, the city of Fort Lauderdale, and the state of Florida with a total statewide economic impact of $1.3 billion. At last year’s show, over $714 million in product was sold over the five-day period. Yes, we feel it’s important for this year’s

show to go ahead.

What’s your advice for visitors looking to plan ahead for the show?

If someone has a particular boat they want to see, make an appointment. Manufacturers and brokers will be allowing fewer people on boats, so you don’t [want to] risk not being able to get aboard. Also, be prepared to wear a face mask; we’re hearing many of the manufacturers and brokers will be requiring them for the safety of their staff.

What do you say to people who predict that because of COVID-19, this year’s show will be a shadow of its former self?

We’re working tirelessly to ensure FLIBS continues being the pinnacle of all nautical exhibitions and the largest in-water boat show in the world. We’ll still have 6 miles of floating docks and 3 million square feet of exhibition space on 90 acres. We’ll still have Superyacht Village and more world and U.S. debuts than any other boat show in the country. «

As Austin began evolving in earnest in the second half of the 1800s, it grew around three primary institutions: the state capital building, the University of Texas, and The Driskill Hotel (driskillhotel.com). From the impressive columns that greet you at the entrance to the stained-glass dome in the lobby, The Driskill drips with a sense of sophistication that harkens back to its original splendor.

Believe the hype: Chevy’s new mid-engine Corvette is one AMAZING supercar

If you’re a lover of adrenaline-pumping, finger-tingling, punch-in-thesolar-plexus supercars, I have two little words for you: New Corvette.

Just feast your eyes on the thing. It has more visual drama than RuPaul and Lady Gaga combined. More air-gulping intakes than an F-22 Raptor.

More ripped muscles than Sly in his prime. Even while standing still, it looks as if it’s slicing through the atmosphere at 200 mph.

When GM unveiled the eighth-generation ’Vette in Summer 2019, it sent shock waves through the supercar world. This was no mere reiteration of America’s favorite sports car—it was a complete reinvention of the brand. After 66 years of having its engine up front, this new C8 plants its honking 6.2-liter V-8 right behind the driver.

Yet delivering a mid-engine Corvette with almost 500 horsepower, sensational performance, otherworldly handling, and a huge step up in quality wasn’t enough for GM. No, it had to seal the deal with a surprising sticker. In this rarified section of the supercar market, where entry prices start at well above $150,000, a nicely equipped “base” Corvette Stingray costs—drumroll, please—$59,995. There are Chevy pickups that retail for more.

Even when you start adding on options, like the must-have $5,000 Z51 Performance package, with its beefier brakes, freer-breathing exhaust, and MagneRide adaptive suspension, you’re still only looking at around $80,000. This is the best-value supercar money can buy. Period.

Some of you may be wondering why it’s such a big deal to have a Corvette with an engine amidships. It’s all about handling poise and balance.

Whereas the last-generation Corvette C7 was a brutish blunt instrument, this C8 is a marvel of driving sophistication.

How sophisticated? After a week of runs to Trader Joe’s, curve-carving on interstate on-ramps, and foot-to-the-floor thrill rides, I would have happily donated a kidney to have kept this slingshot in my driveway.

This puppy is fast, blisteringly so. With 495 hp, 470 lb-ft of torque, and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic, the rear-drive C8 can catapult off the line and hit 60 mph in a pulmonary-pounding 2.9 seconds. Top speed? That would be 194 mph (or 184 with the Z51 Performance package).

Unlike the previous C7 ’Vette, which had an exhaust that growled like

an angry Rottweiler, this new mid-engine rocket ship sounds less raucous and more refined, though still authoritative when you dial up Sport+. And it’s an absolute joy to drive. You sit in body-clamping bucket seats, hang on to a rectangular wheel, and feel like you’re in the cockpit of a military jet. Heads-Up Display on the windshield, check. Touchscreen angled toward the driver, check. Switches and buttons everywhere, check, check.

While the upcoming Florida-friendly convertible version will be worth waiting for, in Corvette tradition the C8 coupe comes standard with a lightweight roof panel that stows in the trunk. When removed, it’s easy to run at

speeds of up to, say, 80 without too much wind buffeting.

For a supercar, the C8 is surprisingly accommodating. With the top in place, the rear trunk can swallow a couple of golf bags. Pop the trunk at the front (the frunk?) and there’s space for two well-stuffed duffels. That’s an excellent 12.6 cubic feet total.

Shortcomings? The biggest is the dreadful rear-three-quarter visibility; pulling out of an angled road junction is a real leap of faith. Road roar from those huge gumball tires, especially on harsh concrete, quickly gets old.

But here is a true engineering marvel, an all-American performance masterpiece that can hold its head high among anything Europe has to offer— and at a price that seems unreal. Now, remind me how to get to Route 66? «

FINS UP! JIMMY BUFFETT’s new fishing machine is a 1,200-hp power cat designed for speed and comfort

By Howard Walker These days, the Son of a Son of a Sailor (you may know him as Parrothead-in-Chief Jimmy Buffett) really doesn’t like to hang around when he’s heading out to his favorite fishing spots. That’s why the “Margaritaville” chorus leader’s newest boat—a stunning, 42-foot, custom power catamaran dubbed Last Mango and painted Buffett’s favorite shade of seafoam green—can top out at more than 60 mph and cruise effortlessly at 40.

“We have four Yamaha F300 outboards, so 1,200 horsepower in total,” says Vinnie LaSorsa, Buffett’s longtime captain and BFF (Best Fishing Friend). “At 6,000 rpm we’ve seen 61 mph. It’s a fun boat that gets us there and back fast.”

After spending the summer with Mr. B, as LaSorsa calls him, chasing bluefin tuna off Cape Cod and Nantucket, Last Mango will soon be heading down to Florida for the winter, docking at Pompano Beach.

Buffett and LaSorsa are already planning wahoo-fishing excursions to the Bahamas and sailfish hunting in the Keys.

“Since we took delivery, we’ve been using it a lot,” LaSorsa says. “We’ve probably put 400 hours on the engines and covered over 7,000 miles. It’s been all over the place.”

Buffett, who splits his time between homes in Montauk, Palm Beach, and “a little trailer in Malibu,” had pretty specific requirements for his new boat. After years casting a line from his beloved West Palm Beach–built Rybovich Express sportfisher, it seems Mr. B was looking for something that went a little faster, but not at the expense of comfort. He loved the look, performance, and smooth ride of the ultra-sleek, 42-foot power catamaran from South Carolina–based Freeman Boatworks. But, according to LaSorsa, he really wanted a boat with a pilothouse instead of an open center console.

As LaSorsa notes, “Jimmy only had three requests: power-opening windows for the sides of the house, shock-absorbing seats, and a retractable power awning for the cockpit. Oh, and 58 rod holders so you can fish from pretty much anywhere on the boat.”

Why was a pilothouse so important to the 73-year-old singer-songwriter? According to Captain Vinnie it can get cold and foggy up in the Northeast, so it provides a warm retreat. Then in the midday heat of Florida and the Bahamas, it becomes an air-conditioned haven.

As you might expect, Last Mango boasts a very cool sound system.

Designed for the boat by JL Audio, it pumps out Buffett’s favorite playlists through speakers in the cabin, cockpit, bow, and even up on the tower.

“When Mr. B’s on the boat he’s pretty much exclusively at the helm,” adds LaSorsa. “Being behind the wheel for him is the relaxing part.”

Any scary moments while out on the ocean? LaSorsa says he won’t forget a trip to the Bahamas earlier this year, in an area southwest of the Berry Islands known as The Pocket. “We were heading down to the Exumas and got into a heavy southeaster with wind against tide. The seas were a solid 8 to 10 feet. The boat did pretty well, but it was not comfortable. It was the roughest conditions I’ve been in.”

Even when Buffett isn’t wetting a line, it’s rare to see Last Mango tied to the dock. LaSorsa is the founder of Freedom Fighter Outdoors, a charitable organization that works with injured service members. With Buffett’s support and occasional participation, LaSorsa organizes fishing expeditions for wounded veterans. or Joey and Nick Bosa, the love of football is in their blood. The brothers grew up cheering for their favorite teams every week during the cherished fall season, but Nick’s earliest memories of the sport are the mementos sprinkled throughout his childhood home in Miami. They belonged to his father, former Miami Dolphins defensive end John Bosa, who played in the NFL for four years beginning in 1987.

Even with a lineage of athletes in the family (their uncle and cousin also went pro), the brothers showed a superior knack for the game that’s since propelled them from sunny South Florida into the wider world of professional football. At 25 and 23, respectively, Joey and Nick represent the NFL’s future. A defensive end for the Los Angeles Chargers, Joey is entering his fifth season and in August signed a five-year, $135-million contract extension, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. Nick is gearing up for his second season as a defensive end with the San Francisco 49ers, after becoming a rookie sensation and playing in Super Bowl LIV. The brothers’ rise to high-caliber play started early. “Nick was always a super football fan, even when he was really little,” recalls their mother, Cheryl Bosa, from her house on Fort Lauderdale Beach. When older brother Joey began playing, Nick took note. At 7 years old, he convinced his parents to let him play as well. “It was an easy thing for me to start doing and fall in love with,” says Nick.

In addition to football, the brothers dabbled in other sports, from soccer to baseball to basketball. Every step of the way, Cheryl and John offered their support. Cheryl notes that

many people noticed their exceptional innate talent, especially Nick’s. “We’d be at the field and strangers would walk up to us and say, ‘What is going on here?’ [John and I] would be like, ‘We’re not quite sure. This is wacky.’”

Football eventually became the Bosa brothers’ focus once they started school at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, which has a national reputation for producing top athletes. “St. Thomas is a school where you don’t have too many multisport athletes, especially when they’re really focused on one or the other,” says Joey, who Cheryl describes as “intense” growing up. Nick, she points out, was the opposite. “Nick was always really

funny. Goofy, silly, always making us laugh.

The two played on the varsity team for one year together. Nick, a freshman at the time, needed to put on weight and started seriously lifting weights in hopes of one day being recruited. Joey’s future in the NFL became a possibility when he received an offer from Alabama his sophomore year. “I was a backup on varsity, and I went to [Alabama’s] camp and really didn’t see myself as anything special out of the bunch there,” he says. He was one of two athletes who received an offer—a pivotal moment that opened up the option for additional college offers. “I went on to

have a really good junior year. Right around then is when it turned into a job.”

Joey ultimately committed to playing football at The Ohio State University. Three years later, Nick followed in his footsteps, becoming a Buckeye and later forgoing his senior year to enter the NFL Draft. The Bosas made history in 2019 when the 49ers drafted Nick second overall, making them the only family in the history of the NFL to have three defensive linemen picked in the first round. (The Mannings, who are all quarterbacks, are the only clan with a similar accomplishment.)

Both Joey and Nick received the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. While Joey’s family celebrated in person in 2016, Nick was unable to attend the ceremony because he was preparing for Super Bowl LIV, which was hosted in Miami Gardens. Nick looks back on the event with mixed emotions. Added pressure and media attention prompted nerves for the first-time Super Bowler, who was playing in his hometown.

“The whole build-up part is not my favorite, but once you get out on the field, it’s just football, so it was a lot of fun to play and to have my family there watching me,” he says. “It didn’t turn out the way I wanted, but it was good motivation for the rest of my career.”

During playoffs, Cheryl attended two of Nick’s games with Joey, which she says was a “really cool” experience. The mother of two powerhouses has been spotted wearing a sewn-together jersey, with one half supporting the Chargers and the other repping the 49ers.

“I’m on a plane every weekend. Usually when the schedule comes out, I set them up, side by side, and try to figure out my schedule. There are very few weekends that I don’t travel.”

The Bosa brothers both sport No. 97 in honor of their father, who now makes his living as an entrepreneur and resides in Fort Lauderdale and Colorado. Cheryl, who represents Engel & Völkers’ sports and entertainment division, has been living in Fort Lauderdale for the last 10 years following two decades in Miami. She handles luxury properties, including 30 Thirty North Ocean, where Nick recently closed on a two-story condo. The property, which will serve as home base for Nick in the off-season, features modern architecture, sprawling ocean views, large open terraces, and resort-style amenities, including a clubhouse lounge and a well-equipped fitness center. It’s also steps from the beach—a spot Nick looks forward to exploring.

With Joey close by, the brothers spent this summer training six days a week at their local facility, putting in the work needed to ensure a successful season. Sharing similar styles of play, they often look to one another for ways to improve.

“I’m sure when Nicky sees me run a fast time or I see him run a fast time, it adds a little boost of motivation for the next round,” says Joey.

With Joey entering his fifth year in the NFL, he’s determined to pick up more wins. “At this point in my career, I kind of know what I’m going to do out there and hold myself to a really high standard,” he says. “But what’s important now is just winning and getting to the Super Bowl.”

Rumors have swirled about a Bosa brothers’ reunion on the line following Super Bowl LIV, but that’s been squashed with Joey’s contract-exten-

sion signing that was captured on HBO’s Hard Knocks. “It would be a dream come true, but at the same time, it would be an interesting dynamic,” says Joey. “We’re both very competitive.”

For now, the Bosa brothers are living in the moment. “My goal is to get back to my teammates and go win the Super Bowl,” shares Nick, who in July was named No. 17 on the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2020 list.

As for Cheryl, she’ll be cheering on her boys from the sidelines as she did in their early days of play. She often reflects on their long journey to becoming who they are today. “I think it’s really cool when what you love to do, you happen to be one of the best at it,” she says. “How many people get to say that? on’t call it a party boat—although the moniker wouldn’t be too far off the mark. Tanzanite is the 145-foot, four-deck, five-cabin luxury yacht belonging to Fort Lauderdale residents Andrew and Tanya Heller. Given that this dynamic couple is known to play host to two or more lavish parties a month—sometimes onboard, sometimes at their waterfront, Thomas Benedict–designed, Mediterraneanstyle estate, either indoors or out—it is fitting that their origin story began at a party with a purpose.

In 2010, after meeting at a Washington, D.C. charity ball that Tanya managed to benefit groups fighting human trafficking, the pair decided to go out on a date.

“We had interests in common like charity work and entertaining,” says Tanya, who was a realtor in Washington, D.C. at the time.

Andrew recalls that Tanya owned 14 animals when they met: an array of cats, dogs, and birds. While Andrew found it charming, he wasn’t without his reservations. “I am allergic to cats and dogs,” he says. “As we dated, and I fell in love with her, I began taking allergy shots so I could be around them.”

The founder of Heller Capital Corporation—which provides financing to start-up companies and makes acquisitions in manufacturing and other areas—Andrew was living mostly in the D.C. area in 2010. But he also owned a second home in Fort Lauderdale, and in

2013, he brought Tanya south with him. “I absolutely loved Fort Lauderdale from the start,” she says. “It was so welcoming with really nice people; a total melting pot.”

The following year, the couple made Fort Lauderdale their full-time residence. They were married three years later. Together, they opened an animal-rescue facility in their guesthouse. “It all started when my parents had kittens in our home,” Tanya confesses. In May 2019, they launched Purrr Inc., a feral cat and kitten rescue that spays, neuters, tames, and socializes the animals before finding them permanent homes.

As the trustee of the Andrew M. Heller Family Foundation—focusing primarily on education, the arts, and animal welfare—Andrew is active with several local charities. He is a member of the board of governors of the Nova Southeastern University’s Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and chairman of its development committee. He serves on the board of directors of the Jack & Jill Children’s Center in Fort Lauderdale, whose mission is to help break the cycle of poverty for children from high-need families.

In addition to Andrew and Tanya’s passion for philanthropy, the epic events they are known for hosting give their romantic partnership a chance to create real moonlight magic—a vehicle they use to introduce their eclectic group of friends to one another.

For Andrew’s birthday last January, the couple entertained 250 people at their estate. Over the years, they have hosted elaborately costumed extravaganzas and themed events for as many as 500 people. Taking an equal interest in party preparation, Tanya designs the table settings, organizes the themes and costumes, and makes sure guests’ needs are accommodated. “I want the guests to enjoy the party,” she says. “I know who has an allergy or a birthday.” Andrew is the communicator and detail person, planning the socializing, invitations, and guest list.

In July, the couple invited a group of friends for a “patriotic chic” dinner party onboard Tanzanite, named for the rare bluish-purple gem found in North Tanzania’s hills of Merelani. The couple’s floating fantasy was built in 2004 by Westship. Andrew bought the boat in 2017 and had it refitted by 2019. “We took Tanzanite from a traditional Art Deco/ornate interior to look more modern and transitional,” he says.

countertops—they gathered around the under-lit bar for their choice of the party’s two signature cocktails: a Patriotic Punch made of pineapple vodka, raspberry liqueur, and Blue Curacao; or the Tanzanite Smooch with blueberry vodka, acai berries, strawberry, and lemon.

The yacht’s top-floor sundeck offers guests a space to relax, with its cool blue and white cushioned seating atop teak decking, and a whirlpool bath used mainly for the couple’s cruises to the Bahamas and other islands. The space blends easy living and sophistication with its blue glass-topped bar and tall bar stools—providing ample schmoozing space, plus a large TV to show feature-length films.

While munching on passed appetizers of watermelon cups with cranberry mascarpone and grilled pineapple and lobster kabobs, guests were encouraged to engage with each other. “We mix people, then love to develop deeper relations with them at our parties,” says Andrew. “We have a diverse group of friends,” Tanya adds. “Some are liberal, and others are conservative, yet we all get along.”

As the boat left the dock to begin cruising up the Intracoastal Waterway toward Oakland Park Boulevard, guests took their places at the main salon dining table made of original custom burl wood mixed with newer stainless steel trim and dark wood.

Chef Adrian Rodriguez created a colorcoordinated meal of patriotic American food and paired the courses with Penfolds Australian red and white wine. The first course of raspberries, star-shaped pineapple slices, and blueberry salad with toasted almonds in a raspberry vinaigrette was followed by each guest’s choice of either lobster and grits, or ribeye steak with blueberry sauce and blue cheese crumbles, plus spinach and gluten-free grits. After dessert offerings of blueberry pie (also gluten-free) and classic American apple pie, the Tanzanite returned to the Hellers’ dock.

Sometimes the best relationships come later in life, as Andrew and Tanya will tell you. Their chance meeting over a decade ago has given them a life full of love and the opportunity to pursue their passions—from philanthropy to party planning—together. «

Only use a professional charter broker. For luxury charters, it’s key to use a broker who’s a member of the International Yacht Brokers Association.

They’ll have knowledge and experience of the yachts with the best crews, chefs, and toys, and can steer you to the best destinations. They’ll also be there if anything goes wrong.

Know how much it will cost.

The weekly charter price is only a fraction of what you’ll pay. Add-on costs include fuel, docking, food and drink, tax, and tips for the crew. These can often add between 30 and 35 percent to the charter.

Plan your route. Some charter yachts are faster than others. If you have a wish list of beaches or ports you want to hit, make sure you know—with the help of a broker—whether the yachts on your shortlist have the speed to get there.

It’s all about the toys. Most luxury yachts will offer a selection of toys to enjoy; Jet Skis, paddleboards, and fast tenders are the usuals. Just make sure the crew is proficient in teaching how to use them.

GET Crackin’ October 15 marks the beginning of the stone crab commercial harvesting season in Florida. To obtain the sweet meat inside the claws—the only edible part—fishermen catch the crabs in traps, break off the claws, and then return the crustacean to the sea to regenerate. Florida stone crabs have become such a booming industry that new regulations are now in place for the pricey delicacy, including a shortened season ending May 2 to ensure sustainability. Enjoy them while you can at Shooters Waterfront in Fort Lauderdale, which is offering them at $14 for one claw and $26 for two. “Shooters will serve them the way Mother Nature intended them to be served,” notes Peter Lopez, director of operations. In a large pot over medium heat, warm the oil and butter. Let the butter melt, then add the bay leaf and sizzle until fragrant, about 30 to 60 seconds. Toss in the celery and onion and cook, stirring continuously, until softened, 2 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and salt and sauté for 2 more minutes. Add the pepper, curry powder, and Old Bay and cook over medium heat. Stir in the flour and stir for 2 to 3 minutes. Pour in the broth and stir. Add coconut milk and heavy cream and keep stirring. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Mix in corn and crab and simmer until tender. Stir in fennel powder.

Remove bay leaf. Ladle the chowder into bowls and garnish with corn kernels, curly scallion, and crabmeat.
