Bal Harbour sets the scene for a spacious Oceana vacation condo.

Designer Fede Teran created an edgy, modern 5,200-square-foot home with embellished features and large spaces. The open layout, symmetrical and balanced, pays close attention to detail and offers unobstructed views of pristine beaches, Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.

Traveling south to Key Largo, interior designer Gil Walsh and architect Tim Slawson reimagine a warm, 3,455-square-foot vintage 1978 home. With a nod to tropical, Mid-century modern design, Walsh placed vivid art on the walls in rooms designed to incorporate the original home’s best architectural features and boast captivating water views.

Surrounded by blue Bahamian waters and only a bridge away from Nassau, designer Adriana Hoyos joins forces with architect Jennifer Saunders to capture pure magic in an 11,700-square-foot estate on Paradise Island. And the team’s design is as close to paradise as one could get with glamour, elegance, drama and the sheer volume of living spaces.

As winter beckons the vibrant South Florida cultural season, Florida Design peruses the art scene in Miami when museums display their latest exhibits alongside Art Basel Miami Beach, Design Miami/ and much more.

This five-day event for Ferrari enthusiasts begins with the Florida Trophy, a two-day track meet at the Palm Beach International Raceway, when Ferrari owners revive memories of days gone by. Next is the Tour of Palm Beach. Vintage and classic sporting automobiles leave from The Breakers and travel through Palm Beach on Atlantic coastal roads with pit stops at the Sailfish Club, The Colony and Tiffany’s, and a finale at the Royal Poinciana Plaza.

IMAGEMAKER: One Inspired Designer Becomes A Passionate Force By Creating Art In Harmonious Interiors Question: What sparked your passion for the world of interior design?

Answer: My passion for interior design evolved when I realized that my creative, artistic talents were in perfect harmony with the more structured training of interior design. I fell in love with the creative process of designing spaces that offered an endless palette. My life goal became clear – I could create art in interiors. I was smitten and went back to school for a degree in Interior Design.

I have never looked back.

Question: What is the inspiration for your designs?

Answer: Inspiration is endless. It can be a client with an interesting art collection, or a structurally interesting space, a beautiful city, a meadow of breathtaking flowers, an architectural building, or a bespoke piece of furniture. I am fortunate to see new and beautiful inspirations all around me.

Question: What do you strive to create when working on a project?

Answer: I strive to make each project unique ... incorporating and anticipating my client’s needs and wants in ways that they cannot imagine themselves. We look to enrich their lifestyle in a well-edited, timeless design, with beautifully executed details and flawless results. Our clients gain trust in our designs, often becoming repeat clients over several years and projects.

Question: What makes Alene Workman Interior Design different from other interior design firms?

Answer: As leaders of the interior design process, we are our clients’ critical advocate that collaborates with all other professionals brought together on their behalf. Not only do we create each client’s design vision, but also every building block of the design is examined with extreme attention to detail to make sure it fits with the overall scheme. We act as the captain of their ship.

We work diligently to build a team of professionals that best suits the client. We have incredible working relationships with some of the finest Architects, Engineers, and Design firms. We walk together while building the team, developing the plans, then bringing the project to life.

SLEEK FUNCTION MEETS SUPERB ARTISTRY in a Palm Beach penthouse in Trump Plaza created by award-winning designer Sura Malaga. Inspired by the world-traveling owners’ art collection and the home’s stunning water views, Malaga converted a 1400 sq. ft. space to a kitchen that works seamlessly for entertaining and everyday life.

An awkward column is concealed as a structure that becomes an island’s back wall. It also features a retractable table for extra seating.

The Asian aesthetic of the owners’ art is a central theme.

For example, the column structure features a bamboo pattern digitally printed on glass and the hand painted crocodile embossed walls were created in a mandarin orange color. With the crocodile signifying courage and the orange, happiness and good health.

Glass is another important theme. Clear sea-glass covers the island and tabletop while brown sea-glass on the backsplashes repeat the color of the glass-covered Miele appliances and glass hood. Upper cabinets are also glass to reflect the amazing light from the 29th floor.

A chocolate brown butler’s pantry wall contains convection, steam and warming ovens, while base cabinets are white.

LED lighting inside the column, under the island and counters plus lights programmed to focus mood lighting throughout assure efficiency as well as drama.

Originally, this home was decidedly Mediterranean architecturally. We set out to contemporize the interior architecture as well as all furnishings. We began by removing all decorative columns, and filling several recessed niches. The living room became the most dramatically transformed space. The carved stone mantel place and hearth were eliminated and replaced by an entirely new designed stone surround. The seating groups were separated to create an easy flow throughout the space.

In the foyer, a piece by Roy Lichtenstein titled Landscape With Boats lends a nod to the sea above a red, antique Asian console. Centered beneath, an organic sisal garden stool from Palecek continues the ethnic feel.

WHEN INTERIOR DESIGNER GIL WALSH, AND ARCHITECT

Tim Slawson and his project manager Susan Nielsen met with a couple who had acquired a vintage 1978 Key Largo, Fla., home in the community of Ocean Reef, it was a gathering of old friends. Walsh worked with the couple on their homes in Western Pennsylvania and Martha’s Vineyard; and Slawson previously helped them with a house in the same Ocean Reef neighborhood. “This tropical, Mid-century modern residence is a departure from the ‘Americana’ styles of their home in New England,” Walsh says. Although Mid-century modern design is experiencing a renaissance, this 3,455-square-foot, 40-year-old home needed attention. “We worked to incorporate the best architectural features of the house to bring it to today’s standards of comfort,” the designer says.

In the living area, the original coquina stone fireplace reaches up to the ceiling. The Sea, a bold oil-on-canvas by Miriam Schapiro, adorns the front of the fireplace with color.

With an emphasis on fine lighting, towering columns and architectural illusions command attention in the dining room. Conch shells of all sizes make the perfect accessory, while glass doors open to reveal picturesque courtyard views.

The owners’ contemporary art collection stands on its own next to walls of windows that join the main living spaces, and open to Card Sound bridge and Biscayne Bay beyond. “Making sure that the view was uninterrupted was important,” Walsh says. In the dining area, a table designed by glass artist Christopher Reisert is created with a unique crackled-glass top. Surrounded by woven wicker chairs from JANUS et Cie, the glass top gives the illusion of shimmering depth.

In the main living areas, Mid-century modern design’s shifting color scheme is reflected in a palette of primary colors to pastels. The foyer, offering a nod to the couple’s interest in exotic locales, greets guests with a favorite piece — an antique Asian console renewed in a red tone.

In the living area, a pair of Paolo Buffa armchairs clad in vintage blue woven jacquard suggest a tribal pattern, while a sofa clad in creamy linen is accented with large, plush pink pillows. The glass top on Cassoni’s cocktail table appears suspended above a frosted Lucite base. “We wanted the cocktail table to float,” the designer says.

Stairways and hallways are not merely passageways. Instead, the designer envisioned them as display galleries for the couple’s vibrant works of art. A collage series by artist David Rabinowitch ascends the wall of an elegant stairway created with a black aluminum and wood balustrade.

IN A HALLWAY GALLERY, A SINGLE BENCH INSPIRED BY ELONGATED FORMS, AND COVERED IN A BROWN AND WHITE GREEK KEY MOTIF, RESEMBLES A WORK OF ART ITSELF.

The designer’s use of organic fabrics in the master bedroom invites the outdoors in. A fourposter bed from Palecek is wrapped in natural rope and custom bedside tables are covered in glazed grasscloth. Ralph Lauren wall lamps from Visual Comfort shimmer with delicate light.

Enveloped in retro comfort, the den is furnished with 1940s bamboo bentwood armchairs and a sofa covered in Pindler and Pindler linen, along with lamp tables that were once used on a Hollywood movie set.

Personality emerges in a hallway gallery with an abstract piece from artist Ana Sacerdote that adds a pop of red color, and on another wall, William John Kennedy’s intriguing black-and-white photographs of Andy Warhol.

In the master bedroom, gazing across a glittering body of water is an everyday pleasure from Palecek’s four-poster bed wrapped in natural rope. Perfect for relaxing

or dreaming, Walsh placed a pair of chairs with elegant lines covered in fibrous rope by the scenic window.

Mid-century modern designers Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen are associated with elongated, sculpted furnishings, and architects such as Marcel Breuer and Frank Lloyd Wright are known for incorporating nature into the life of a home. An elegant blend of those two “schools,” along with a quest for comfort and the couple’s personality and interests, inspired Walsh and Slawson to create this uniquely livable retreat. Mid-century or any century … this house can be called home.

Footsteps from the finest stretch of pristine, white sand beaches, and only a bridge away from the capital, Nassau, this exquisite retreat sits surrounded by the turquoises of the Atlantic Ocean and whispered to by its tropical breeze.

Enter interior designer Adriana Hoyos, who had already made one stop to the residence — eight years before. The then-owner had wanted a kind of Pacific-Asian theme, and she accommodated his tastes with elaborate grids and exotic woods. Now, with a recommendation from the former owner, the new purchaser wished to carry the themes in a slightly different direction. Without jettisoning the geometric grillwork, there would be a grand curtsey to glamour

and elegance, to drama and an unabashed emphasis on the sheer volume of the living spaces. This would be about as close to paradise as one could get.

“The millwork is so beautiful,” Hoyos says. “And besides, it is in the DNA of the structure.” It wouldn’t be changed. From the front elevation where varying window sizes are united behind two towering wood lattices, the front entrance forms a kind of noble gate. Then step inside, where the entry begins the story.

Intricate patterns of the stairway’s wrought-iron handrail and the dreamy green stria of its marble treads ascend alongside a contemplation rock garden perfect for calming minds from both East and West. “We were going to keep the travertine flooring from the original house, but in the end, seeing this beautiful stairway, we decided to change it all to marble,” Hoyos says.

And the same minds that feel calmed by the rock garden and the gazing balls in the entry, will energize upon entering the grand salon with its seeming readiness for entertainment and conviviality. “The original design called for a fireplace in the massive matched granite slab wall from Opustone,” the designer says. “But it was clear that piece of stone was a work of art all its own, so we sent the fireplace back.” However, she did change two windows that had bothered her. “Instead, I placed mirrors flanking this wall,” she says.

Now irregularly sized rectangles reflect natural light as well as the wood grillwork overhead.

Relaxation prevails in the lounge area as sliding panels of Seike wood glide for soft closures, and muted light from smoked, gold and clear glass pendants create an intimate atmosphere.

Tufted-leather ottomans from Hoyos’ own Caramelo collection anchor one end of the seating group, while Fendi’s contoured armchairs with their 3-D laser cut olive weave seem to reach across the cocktail table to chat with a pair of Art Deco inspired, emerald-suede and chrome lounge chairs. “To keep the room from feeling too expansive, I designed a four-piece cocktail table that can be separated to center more intimate seating groups,” Hoyos says.

The repetition of mirroring in both furniture and wall decor is one of the designer’s signature details. “That recognition of an element from one room to

another pulls the entire design together,” she says. In keeping with her mantra, mirrors reappear in the dining room where the Lasvit chandelier repeats and repeats with smoked crystal illuminated “eggs” that shimmer from beneath an intricate stepped-ceiling. The delicate tendrils of a gilded blown-glass sculpture spiral in ABOVE : Big enough for family and friends, or warm enough to enjoy the morning paper, the kitchen is its own mecca. Swivel barstools from Anima Domus pull up to the island topped in Taj Mahal marble from Marble of the World. Smoked-glass pendants from Niche Lights cast soft circles of light around the gourmet space.

“The home was certainly beautiful when it was built, and beautiful when the new owner bought it … yet after eight years, it looked a little tired,” interior designer Adriana Hoyos says. “Now, it is a contemporary beauty and very elegant.”

complementary contrast to the apparent thickness of the Paonazzo stone table top.

From the “Chocolate Collection” by Hoyos, the table is surfaced in wood wrapped in stone, with a seike wood base designed for the geometrics of the house. Centering the wall, a glowing, yellow-toned abstract provides an artistic focal point.

Capturing space and turning it to her purpose is another signature element of Hoyos’ design. And when the guests depart, a cozy space to relax may be just what owner needs. In what was formerly a library, Hoyos turned the shelving into wine racks and display cases to shape a bar in an intimate lounge area where either an evening nightcap or a morning mimosa would feel just right.

With a soaring ceiling that bears a hint of Bahamian structures, yet covered in South American wood, the platinum palette strikes a reserved elegance. “The owner loves his kitchen,” the designer says. Bright and sleek with walnut laminated cabinetry and top-of-the-line appliances, the extra-spacious, all custom kitchen amply accommodates both lavish entertaining and casual meals.

Overhead, a floating ceiling faced in metallic cork balances the oversized island that grounds this culinary space.

Upstairs, shimmering tones introduce the master suite that combines a cozy sitting area, spacious sleeping quarters and a private bathing alcove. A stepped, seike wood ceiling crowns the private space and lends additional height to accentuate the custom bed backed by a platinum-hued, suede wall panel. Centered above, spectacular crystal galaxies from Eichholtz become chandeliers that float in the air. “This is a very grand-proportioned room that is all about comfort, luxury and stature,” Hoyos says.

Yet, this is the Bahamas. With his yacht docked only steps away, the homeowner can admire it from a rear elevation that includes

both a lower gallery filled with entertainment opportunities, as well as an upper balcony that wraps the house. “The pool area is where the owner and his guests spend most of their time,” Hoyos says. “There is so much to do!”

With elegant marble columns that look as if they were just delivered from a Grecian temple, the gallery’s width allows for five separate seating areas. Beneath the wood beams, a barbeque area with its table for 12, lounge chairs in wicker, and soft, woven daybeds invite relaxation and fun. And then there are the pools lined with sparkling glass mosaics — a lounging pool, a lap pool, and a Jacuzzi that spill invisibly over the edge to create a cascade on the dock level below.

Overhead, the family room balcony is just right for family — and friends. A comfortable social grouping and Nassau’s sparkling profile in the distance make this upstairs hideaway the perfect place to regroup once your yacht has come in.

as if he’s creating an extension of himself. Naturally, when it comes time for him to hand it over to his clients, he feels as if a part of him goes with it. But he wouldn’t have it any other way. This 5,200-square-foot Oceana vacation condo in Bal Harbour, Fla., is no exception.

The new clients learned of Teran’s work when they had viewed another of his design projects in Brickell. Needless to say, they were very impressed and hired him just 10 minutes after meeting. Then they gave him carte blanche.

“We had a lot of challenges architecturally speaking,” Teran says. “We razed the whole apartment and redid the layout to make the spaces larger and more functional.” The clients wanted embellished features and larger spaces, which

resulted in a clean, elegant floor plan that yields to the homeowners’ lifestyle and taste, and especially its stunning water and city views.

The living area is a gathering spot for conversation that offers ample seating options with a focus towards the ocean. Custom, off-white cotton-clad sofas are designed with one arm and at floor-hugging height so that water views can be enjoyed unobstructed, while a pair of custom Fede Design ottomans in a navy blue hue provide extra seating. A silk area rug, custom designed by Teran in shades of blue, taupe, gray and white, recalls the sand and sea. A shapely cocktail table, a focal point in Teran’s quest to make the room as fluent as possible, creates an illusion of moving or hovering. “It’s like a stingray flying through the ocean,” the designer says. Teran designed the expansive terrace as an annex to the living area that allows both spaces to coexist naturally. Brown Jordan’s white sofa and chair are oversized and durable, while a Holly Hunt concrete cocktail table adds interest with a tabletop surface divided into quadrants. An area rug complements the blue and white tones inside the home atop large-scale, white Italian porcelain tile flooring that flows from the living area to the terrace to unify the spaces.

Meant to spark conversation, seating in the living area is arranged with two sets of chairs clad in a Brunschwig & Fils white cotton and accented with bolster pillows from Kravet.

Another conversation space emerges between the living and dining areas. Fede Design’s custom cocktail tables are flanked by four, cotton-clad chairs that provide extra seating for entertaining. Art also plays a central role in the home’s design.

In the living area, a marriage of blue and white hues is sparked with splashes of vivid red in a large original work of art by Fernanda Meirelles. At the far end of the dining area, a piece by Mexican artist Carmen Izurieta, dominates in red tones.

The avant-garde theme is continued in the dining room.

Teran separated the space with a custom partial divider wall that he designed, inlaid with alternating wood beams that suspend from the top and jut up from the base. Just beyond the partition wall, a Costantini Pietro

In the breakfast area, Flos Lighting’s bold pendant illuminates a walnut table from Habitus and upholstered chairs that also match the kitchen’s barstools, all from Calligaris. The trio of barstools tuck neatly underneath a marble and walnut island.

“Everything inspires me — I am very detailed and like to think outside the box,” designer Fede Teran says. “I like to go above and beyond … not just walk into a store and buy a chair ... that’s just not me.”

Teran’s mantra, “Why live simple when you can live fantastic?” is what the designer strives for in every project. “I want to create something beautiful and unique for all my clients,” he says.

with a sculptural base. A unique pendant created with layers of silver glass blends perfectly with stainless steel appliances in the kitchen.

In the master bedroom, a leather-upholstered custom bed and a sophisticated seating area with oversized chairs are perfectly positioned to take in ocean views.

A wall of “Toujourin” Japanese stone adds texture to the room setting the stage for a Peter Lik photographic artwork that Teran describes as “captivating.” The frameless art hangs in a custom niche lit with LED lights to enhance its soothing tones.

During the final three weeks of a project, Teran does not like his clients to view the property in its final stages. He likes to surprise them. And so, it was a beautiful Miami evening when he handed his clients a shiny Tiffany keychain with a key to their new home. The finished product was precisely how the owners’ had envisioned it ... they were thrilled with the result. “I love making people happy,” Teran says.

“So, when my they trust me to deliver the home of their dreams, it makes it all worthwhile … that’s why I do what I do.”

With its finely curved, hand-carved strokes, a sculptural piece from Christopher Guy, Le Remous, creates movement above the custom-designed fireplace.

to put her expert design skills to work when architect Randall Stofft and builder Marty Hasey decided to embark on this project. “Marty has completed many of the homes in Old Palm, and I always enjoy the opportunity to work on such beautiful projects,” Polimeni says. “I also love working with an amazing team, especially starting with an adaptable architectural plan and seeing it come to life with flowing details added during construction.”

“Of all of the rooms in the home, I found the clubroom to be the most challenging,” interior designer Terri Polimeni says. “I chose bolder elements and graphic designs to make the biggest impact while creating multiple social areas that still feel comfortable for small groups.”

The spacious rooms provided Polimeni with an ideal opportunity to implement dramatic and eye-catching details. Such is the case in the sweeping foyer, where contemporary consoles — purposely chosen for the Lucite legs — appear to float in front of expansive storefront style windows.

In keeping, a wall of glass lines the great room that captivates with swirling onyx stone on the living area’s spectacular fireplace. Polimeni’s neutral scheme is warm with soft shades of gray and sumptuous fabrics.

A plush area rug grounds the space, while a sculptural piece centers the fireplace wall. “The beautiful onyx on the fireplace gives a linear pattern and richness to the overall space,” the designer says. “The wall’s lacquer finish is custom colored to enhance the interior palette.”

Across the room, a cascade of effervescent orbs sparkle above the dining area’s table that comfortably accommodates both large and small gatherings. Upholstered dining chairs make a soft and elegant statement in complement to the polished, white marble flooring.

Chevron-patterned wood planks ground the clubroom, where Boynton Billiards’ pool table provides hours of fun center stage. On one side, guests enjoy cocktails at the bar seated in Chaddock’s leather-clad stools, while across the way, Charleston Forge’s table is ready for a game of cards.

An alluring space to entertain guests before and after dinner, the clubroom features a wrap-around sectional and a handsome pool table. A custom-designed bar incorporates decorative panels, a curved quartzite countertop and floating shelves to showcase dazzling accent pieces. “I wanted this intimate space to embody the classic ‘cocktails at five, billiards at seven’ feel,” the designer says.

Scale and comfort are key in the open family room, where a built-in entertainment wall is designed with various textures and materials such as stainless steel and stained wood. Plush seating and an ottoman-style cocktail table introduce casual comfort inside, while glass walls open to include the open-air social areas beyond.

Wow factors were not overlooked when Polimeni dreamed up her design for a state-of-the-art kitchen and the magnificent wine room nearby. The kitchen showcases two islands clad in stunning book-matched quartzite, gleaming stainless steel accents and a pair of sleek pendant lights that bring modern elegance to this streamlined culinary space. Sensational style continues in the climate-controlled wine room easily accessed via both the kitchen and dining area.

“During this project, I found it very exciting to see the drawings and sketches of the designs come to life,” Polimeni says. “After having worked with Marty for more than 20 years, I knew he trusted my vision which allowed me to be very creative without hesitation.”

AS EVERY CLASSIC LOVE STORY TEACHES,

when you’ve found “the one,” you should never let them go.

This can also be true of interior designers. When a couple from Chicago, Ill., hired local designer Jennifer Greer Hartmann to create their primary residence in Chicago’s affluent Gold Coast, they were more than pleased with her talents and formed an instant connection. Several years later, the couple acquired a 3,500-square-foot vacation home in Windsor, an upscale enclave in Vero Beach, Fla., that boasts luxurious amenities such as an exclusive beach club, a world-class golf course, art gallery and an equestrian center. When they decided to add nearly 3,500 square feet to their vacation home, they called on John Brenner, who was the original architect. To style the new interiors, they did not hesitate to call again on Hartmann, who had by now relocated with her family to Texas. Up to the task, she set out to unify the home’s new spaces with a blend of contemporary, modern and transitional furnishings.

With its rich Anglo-Caribbean architecture, lush tree-lined streets and small town feel, Greer Hartmann’s challenge was in

adhering to Windsor’s strict architectural code while introducing a more modern interpretation. “I believe in always complementing the architecture,” the designer says. She incorporated a soft and serene color palette, classic pieces, intriguing artwork and plenty of seating into the now nearly 7,000-square-foot expansion, also created by Brenner. The large great room, dining rooms and expansive master suite, would be perfect for the couple, who love to entertain.

Designed with a distinct feel, the lady’s master bath is wrapped in all white with a crystal chandelier above and a freestanding tub set center stage.

In the master bedroom, a regal four-poster bed from Ironies is bathed in sunlight. In the corner, a McGuire lounge chair upholstered in a Rose Tarlow fabric creates a quiet place to relax. The ceiling treatment designed by Brenner & Associates, complements the home’s existing Anglo-Caribbean architecture.

With the table’s Mid-Century Modern sleek profile, the line of sight is kept open and uncluttered. Nearby, a sculptural metal stairway created by Brenner & Associates, adds a new twist as it ascends gracefully to the second level.

“I wanted the addition to feel connected to the older part of the home so I designed the interiors to complement the architecture as much as possible, while still honoring the clients’ love of contemporary design,” Greer Hartmann says.

In a centrally located sitting area, armchairs from Oly Studio upholstered in a blue Kathryn Ireland print nestle near a cozy fireplace and form a conversation grouping around a hexagonal cocktail table.

A large area rug warms the space atop European oak flooring custom designed by Greer Hartmann.

The spacious master closet, tailored to the couple’s needs, is fashioned with custom painted cabinetry, and a skirted chair and vanity set beneath vaulted ceilings. In the tranquil master bedroom, a regal, four-poster bed from Ironies, and supple fabrics from Mark Alexander in the form of a green-blue, tufted bench and sheer draperies lend a luxurious feel.

Outdoors, a spacious pergola overlooks the Indian River. Outfitted with wicker furnishings from Thomas Pheasant for McGuire, it provides ample seating for family and friends to socialize. “I worked around the clock, and put my heart and soul into this home,” Greer Hartmann says. “It was honestly a labor of love for me. I just wanted the owners to be thrilled with the end result … and they were.”

Is it a painting or a photograph? That has been the most commonly asked question from those who have seen the photorealistic oil canvases of Jeannie Maddox for the first time. Shortly after Jeannie and Sam bought a home with a pool in 1975, Jeannie became fascinated with the possibilities of a brighter palette using the pool as a backdrop. That first painting of one of her art students in the pool sold before it was dry and the “Swimmer Series” was born. The refraction of the body underwater is something Jeannie finds fascinating as do her collectors across the United States and as far away as Italy, Holland and Japan. On a trip to New York, Jeannie instantly loved the refraction and reflection of mannequins in store windows. HOLLAND ROAD typifies this feeling of refraction and reflection of light that connects the “Swimmer Series". It is the refraction and reflection of light that connects the “Swimmer Series” and the “Urban Series”. Jeannie’s work is shown at major festivals across Florida and many other states. Her original oils and commissions are in great demand. She also has wonderful giclees on canvas that bring her work within reach of a much larger audience.

Jeannie’s newest piece, AMALFI COAST, was inspired by a trip to Italy this summer to visit their architect son Samuel, who was doing a Harvard fellowship there for his masters degree!

WHEN AWARD-WINNING architect, interior designer and builder Phil Kean saw this unique, nearly one-acre property facing a lake with golf course views as a backdrop, he knew he had found the perfect site to build a home.

Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, located in Orlando, Fla., is an exclusive gated community that attracts famous athletes and politicians. “I built a house here on spec for an imaginary client that I thought might buy it,” Kean says.

Considered to be one of the most sought-after architects in Florida, Kean likes to build all of his homes green using sustainable products.

This innovative, 8,245-square-foot state-of-the-art, dual courtyard-style home is LEED certified gold and replete with many custom features.

A modern stone veneer surrounds the custom front door designed by Kean, while solar panels convert sunlight into electricity for space conditioning and hot water systems. A Tesla Powerwall is used to store excess solar energy.

Inside, the elegant living room overlooks the Palm courtyard. Planned to feel like a glamorous yet intimate boutique hotel lobby, a massive wall of windows opens to the courtyard and then disappears completely into a wall to create the perfect indoor-outdoor living experience. “The concept of this home was that all of the glass would disappear and

the house could live inside and out,� Kean says. Comfortable velvet-clad sofas in a charcoal hue are modern with traditional curves and grouped with low-slung armchairs covered in cream-colored linen from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.

Opposite, white leather-clad ottomans with chrome legs offer extra seating. A stunning LED chandelier designed by Kean adds shimmer to the sophisticated setting above Surya’s neutral-toned area rug in a geometric pattern that grounds the space in comfort.

The modern kitchen is minimalist designed with clean-lined, bright white cabinetry. A breakfast bar created with a live edge walnut slab intersects with a dark Caesarstone concrete island. Sophisticated, white leather-clad chairs that tuck

beneath the bar rest on a base of stainless steel that extends neatly up the chair backs. An expanse of white and gray-veined porcelain flooring flows throughout the home to add elegance.

Perhaps one of the most unique areas in the home is a chilled wine room created with a custom racking system that displays over 400 wine bottles. A light gray Caesarstone bar separates the wine room from the dining area, where an Indonesian rosewood table with a metal base in an antique bronze echoes the dark metal finish around the windows. Armchairs upholstered in a sugar-white hue with delicately curving backs edge the table. On view through large windows, the pool courtyard sparkles with a custom knife-edge perimeter-overflow pool Perfect for an active family lifestyle, the Palm courtyard, designed by landscape architect Corey Mills, opens to a spacious, turf-covered putting green.
