In the year since the COVID-19 pandemic changed lives around the globe, one aspect of our lives has emerged as all-important: home.

Prior to that, so many of us, myself included, lived life largely away from home—at offices, gathering places, and destinations near and far. Thanks to quarantines and health concerns, our lives have become more home-centric and we’ve come to appreciate the comfort and safety of a sanctuary. This is why many have endeavored to improve their surroundings, whether by renovating, upsizing (or downsizing), or simply rearranging the furniture.

This month, we celebrate the homelife by taking you inside two local houses.

The first is Shawn Smith-Myers’ golf course–facing abode at Coral Ridge Country Club. The casual, fun, and livable family home is the epitome of Florida living, from the many shades of blue nodding to water and sky, to resort-like outdoor living areas, to wide open spaces for friends to gather. We invite you to tour the Myers residence by turning to “In Living Color” on page 42.

The second is the stylish casa of fashionista Michelle DiMarco, who has brought the same chic sensibility of her Lilac and Lilies Loft, as well as the global aesthetic she’s developed through travel, to her beautifully appointed home.

For “Lofty Goals,” Michelle has styled herself in complement to the different rooms in her house, displaying her taste both on a personal and lifestyle level.

A CELEBRATION OF BLACK ARTISTS IN PALM BEACH COUNTY

Karibu (pronounced kah-ree-boo) means “welcome, come in” in Swahili. This celebratory concept of Black culture, not unlike the Southern tradition of Sunday dinner after church, invites everyone to embrace the journey of life and learn through the eyes and creativity of local Black artists.

This Harlem Renaissance-style exhibition is intended to build cultural bridges (not walls) between different communities.

All in the Details Laurie Duncan has been painting and drawing for as long as she can remember, but it didn’t become her full-time gig until several years ago.

She was working as a fashion designer when she noticed “corporate America” was starting to take the fun out of her creative process, so she began painting outside of work. “As I started to share my artwork more and get commissioned projects from friends and family, I realized that art was making me truly happy,” says the England native who now calls Hollywood Beach home.

While she has a natural talent for fashion illustrations, Duncan has evolved her portfolio to include

large-scale works in multiple mediums. She’s best known for her watercolor botanical paintings on canvas, noting that her palettes are “heavily influenced by the pastels and happy colors that I discover around Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and the Art Deco District in Miami.”

In addition to a selection of art prints and original paintings, Duncan offers custom pet and human portraits. “They are always such a pleasure to work on, as it’s such a special keepsake or gift to give loved ones,” she says. Duncan also enjoys creating bespoke, hand-painted items like basketballs, footballs, and surfboards, and recently launched a series of sports legend portrait paintings. “They’re a great alternative to traditional framed paintings and make a beautiful statement when styled in a home.” (laurieduncanart.com)

CREATE RESORT-INSPIRED SPACES AT HOME WITH FERNANDO WONG

l Play with texture. Use various colors, shapes, and textures to create a dynamic landscape that feels elegant and luxurious, like your own private resort.

Be mindful of sunlight. Some plants enjoy full sun more than others, so make sure you choose ones that can handle the Florida heat.

Consider seasonality. Choosing plantings that bloom in different seasons will make sure your space stays green and vibrant all year long.

Embrace the beach. For beachfront properties, be sure to select plants that can withstand salt air and ocean winds.

COLOR WHEEL

CASA CHIC When Pantone released its trend forecast for 2021, the color-focused institute decided that two is better than one, selecting Ultimate Gray and Illuminating as its colors of the year. “Not only are they a great color pairing for home decor and beyond, but they also represent a sense of calmness and harmony,” says Alena Capra of Alena Capra Design in Fort Lauderdale. “Since 2020 was such a challenging year, this color pairing reminds me of the sunshine after a storm. There is something powerful and beautiful about them together.” With unending ways to mix and match the colors, we turned to Capra for advice on how to incorporate this duo into the home. Fernando Wong is making urban green living a reality. The renowned landscape architect’s local portfolio includes Soho Beach House, the Institute of Contemporary Art Museum’s sculpture garden, and the Residences at Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Miami.

He’s also helping buyers of the Four Seasons Fort Lauderdale transform their rooftop decks, terraces, and balconies into green lounges. With a bit of imagination, you can convert a corner of your home into a place of relaxation and connect with nature. Here, Wong shares a few tips on how to execute a resortinspired retreat. Outdoors Capra says Ultimate Gray works well as a neutral upholstery for exterior furnishings. Smaller accent pieces can bring in a pop of yellow. Think: garden stools, pillows, chairs, or as part of a pattern in an outdoor carpet. Take it one step further with pool towels in Illuminating.

Bedrooms Work gray into bedding, upholstery, and area rugs. A nice way to bring in Illuminating, she says, is through small pillows, accent upholstery, and wall art. “I also think this color combo is perfect for kids’ rooms,” says Capra, who recently designed a room for Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “I paired a bold yellow accent wall with three lighter gray walls and brought in two-toned carpet tiles similar to Ultimate Gray.”

Kitchen/Bath Capra recommends incorporating gray into floor tile, cabinetry on an accent island, or as the tone of a backsplash when paired with white cabinets. She also notes that gray is great for countertops, with quartz and natural stone options available in solid gray or with gray veining. Introduce some yellow to kitchen countertops with a stand mixer or through plates, mugs, or trays. Bath and hand towels in Illuminating can be a beautiful accent in the bathroom. For more color and pattern, Capra suggests adding removable wallpaper.

Estate WONDERS

Discover what life was like on a beachfront estate in the 1930s and ’40s with a visit to the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. This season’s programming is filled with art, music, watercolors, and more. To start, make plans for either a self-guided tour of the 25-acre property using a mobile app featuring recorded information about each room (available Tuesday through Sunday), or opt for a guided tour with a docent who can share insightful details (available Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays). Groups of nine will be allowed on each docent-led tour and tickets must be purchased in advance. In addition, be sure to check out a variety of events, workshops, and more. WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP From March 3 through April 7, join fine artist and watercolorist Karen Eskesen to learn about the traditional techniques of realism in watercolor and line drawing. Participants will also get free time to paint in the courtyard and gardens to cull even more inspiration.

ACRYLIC PAINTING WORKSHOP Beginning March 4, Bonnie Opie will host an acrylic painting workshop covering the basic principles of acrylic painting. The six-week session concludes April 8 and will also include time to paint in the courtyard and gardens.

ART AFOOT

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts and Right Angle Productions have created an interactive outdoor experience based on one of the biggest art crimes in history. Hosted Tuesday through Sunday from March 16 to April 4, “Art Heist” invites locals to act as detectives in a socially distanced true crime show.

Groups move through five walkable and wheelchair accessible locations downtown to gather clues from actors portraying a slew of roles. The show culminates with a memorable ending featuring a social media component and the unmasking of “The Greatest Art Thief of All Time.” (browardcenter.org) 18

By Linda Marx Last fall, the Miami Marlins’ CEO and part-owner Derek Jeter announced that the team would be hiring Kim Ng as general manager of the Magic City’s Major League Baseball (MLB) team. The move was an historic breakthrough, and Ng, 52 (and the second GM of Asian descent), has proved she is well-qualified for the role. She brings 30 years’ experience as a baseball executive with MLB teams like the Chicago White Sox (1990-1996), the New York Yankees (1998-2001), and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2002-2011). The University of Chicago alumna, who played college softball for four years, was formerly MLB’s senior vice president of operations.

In her new position, Ng will be the Marlins’ head decision-maker responsible for negotiating contracts, making trades, running the team’s draft, and staying on top of everything necessary to run a successful team.

FLI: How did your experience working in the MLB central office help you better understand how teams operate?

NG: This was my second stint in the central office interestingly enough, having served as director of waivers and records for the American League Office in 1997. When clubs call the central office, they are generally seeking help. Through those conversations and observing their decision-making process, I was able to gain a broad understanding of some of their inner workings and how the club/personnel think and operate, which served as a great learning opportunity.

What gave you the confidence to continue looking for a GM job over the years?

I’m not sure it was about confidence, as much as it was about persistence. The only thing I did know was that I wouldn’t get the job if I didn’t try.

What part of your upbringing made you march to your own drum, and how has empowerment made you stronger?

I think the time I grew up in was incredibly impact-

ful: It was the 1970s, and many women at that time, including my mother, were finding themselves and finding their voices, and that meant not necessarily being limited to traditional gender roles of the time. I remember thinking from the time I was 4 or 5 years old that if something didn’t make sense, as long as it wasn’t hurtful, it should be questioned, and that applied to many social norms. I was not going to let others’ opinions of me, or what they thought I should do, define me.

How have your parents played an important role in your life?

My parents and their parents were the very typical immigrant story: They came to this country looking for a better existence and took nothing

for granted. That mindset was instilled in me as a kid and I have carried it with me my entire life.

They always wanted more for me than what they had, and to achieve more than they had. I’ve tried not to disappoint them Have you always loved playing sports?

Always. I was the kid that was perpetually dirty with scabs on my knees from either playing some kind of sport or having some type of competition (with others or myself). Even if there was no one around, I would throw a ball against the stoop or play handball against the chimney, trying to perfect my shots. I was that kid. And, even as an adult, it’s hard for me to walk into a room that has a ball and not pick it up and start playing with it.

3 Ways to Build a SUSTAINABLE Home

From fending off floods to tapping into environmentally friendly energy sources, creating a home that’s in sync with its South Florida surroundings is easy as 1-2-3

By Skye Sherman Building a “future-ready” home isn’t just about smart appliances and high-tech features; prioritizing sustainability is a key piece of the puzzle.

“Greening homes in Fort Lauderdale and across the globe is essential to lessen the climate-change impacts our city is already experiencing,” says Glen Hadwen, sustainability manager at the City of Fort Lauderdale. “Changes small and large, from installing LED light bulbs to solar panels, all play a part.”

Achieving sustainability in South Florida—with its low elevation, porous geology, humid climate, endangered species, and air rich with sunshine and salt—comes with challenges but is especially important to our delicate environment. Here are some steps you can take to construct a greener home.

WORK WITH NATURE Use biomimicry—designing the way nature designs—as your guide. Aim for minimal site disturbance and maximum green space; work with what you’ve got to create a space that complements or even regenerates (rather than depletes) the environment.

“Check local zoning and figure out first what you’re

allowed to do, then look at sustainable strategies and figure out what’s best to do,” recommends Griffin Morris, president of AIA Fort Lauderdale and senior project manager at Strang—an integrated architecture, engineering, interior design, and planning firm. Account for the threat of climate change, he advises, especially in coastal communities—new builds can employ techniques like elevating the first floor to mitigate potential flooding.

“On a new home build, zoning in South Florida typically requires us to use a base flood elevation (how high the ground can be) and a design flood elevation (how high the first floor of the home must be),” he explains. “Sometimes there’s an option for an understory, a covered area below the design flood elevation, usually limited to a garage or enclosed stair. Other zoning areas may require that you add retaining walls and raise the grade on your property.”

With Florida’s sea level rising as much as an inch every three years, according to NOAA tidal station data, factoring nature’s upcoming shifts into construction plans is crucial.

Victor Caban-Diaz, owner/principal of Building Ingenuity, adds that when designing a home, minimizing floor-to-ceiling windows on southern facades allows for indirect rather than direct sunlight to penetrate your home. “This helps keep the house cool,” he says. “The sun in South Florida rises and falls to the south of all buildings, which means all walls

To further lessen your impact, utilize native plants and permeable pavement, and plant trees: Contributing to the tree canopy not only helps the planet, but the added shade keeps your home cooler naturally, resulting in energy savings.

Other examples of biomimicry in action take a page from self-cleaning plants like the hydrophobic lotus to develop a glass that “self-cleans” every time it rains, conserving energy (and window-washing costs); a recently built LEED Platinum-certified home in Texas is outfitted with a roof that relies on “thermosyphon ventilated” technology similar to the way temperature is regulated inside termite mounds. Homes can even be designed to manage 100 percent of stormwater runoff, repurposing the “gray water” to irrigate landscaping.

USE EARTH-FRIENDLY MATERIALS

Achieving home sustainability requires an exacting look at the very materials you’re using to construct your abode. Seek out non-toxic and ecologically responsible building materials, such as natural finishes that are sustainably harvested, renewable, or even recycled; rammed-earth walls and wool insulation are also solid options that are light on both the earth and your home.

Moreover, ensure your materials are not harmful to your family nor your surroundings. Recent developments include plywood that can be manufactured with an amino acid produced by the blue mussel mollusk, thus free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are noxious chemicals emitted from many materials commonly used for interiors.

Beachfront homes can use specially tinted “turtle glass” to protect against harmful light pollution that draws sea turtles inland, away from the ocean.

And instead of relying on the carbon-heavy global supply chain, “wherever possible, install finishes sourced from local manufacturers to lessen energy consumption from transporting materials from far locations,” says Caban-Diaz. Plus, locally grown materials are naturally suited to quirks of the local climate.

As you build, shoot for Green Home Standard certification by the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC).

CHOOSE THE RIGHT ROOF Choosing a roofing option that can lower the amount of heat your home absorbs and maximize the green potential of your space depends on your roof’s angle, the structure supporting it, local code, and your budget.

“Don’t neglect the view from above,” advises Max Strang, founder of Strang.

“Beauty can come in the form of solar photovoltaic, planted roofs, and robust tree canopies,” he says.

Planted roofs are either intensive, using a deep layer of soil to support plant life that can make your roof look like a planted yard, or extensive, which uses a tray system with a thinner layer of soil. Plant options for the latter are smaller, but they weigh less and are easier to install and repair.

“Both systems help reduce heat gain from the sun (radiation) and the outside air (convection),” adds Morris. Strang sometimes sets the second floor of a home back farther than the first floor, installing a green roof in the resulting space to give residents privacy and a connection to nature.

Also popular are solar roofs—covered in photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight directly into electricity. Tesla solar tiles can pay for themselves through the energy they harvest; you can monitor your real-time energy production and control your system remotely through the Tesla app. Pair it with a Powerwall, Tesla’s home battery that stores the energy your tiles produce, for backup protection in case of outages.

Alternatives include blue roofs, which store rainfall and then gradually release it, and cool roofs, which reflect sunlight to reduce the transfer of heat to the building. Caban-Diaz also advises using light-colored tiles on sloping roofs. “Dark colors absorb heat that transfers into the home and causes more work for your air conditioning units,” he says. « FORTLAUDERDALEILLUSTRATED.COM | MARCH 2021

Up in the northern Serengeti, Asilia Africa’s Sayari Camp (asiliaafrica.com) reopened following a comprehensive refurbishment. MEET THE CATS OF THE UNTOUCHED EASTERN SERENGETI. From 1994 to 2014, much of the eastern Serengeti—and its iconic short-grass plains—remained off limits to tourism as part of a concerted effort to protect dwindling numbers of big cats (namely cheetah) and provide a safe haven for repopulation efforts. Once the region was reintegrated into the National Park circuit, eco-conscious operator Asilia Africa (asiliaafrica.com) planted roots in this prime predator real estate. Fast-forward to present day, and Asilia’s tented camp, Namiri Plains, stands as the superlative place within the Serengeti to see African cats, big and small.

A recent visit to Namiri Plains lived up to the hype. I counted a minimum of six cheetah encounters daily, with one jumping right into our vehicle. I marveled at interactions among lion cubs, including the progeny of famed lions Bob and Ziggy, known for their size, strength, and massive black and blond manes, respectively. I witnessed rare daylight sightings of caracals and servals, even catching a glimpse of two melanistic serval kittens.

The camp itself also impressed as one of the Serengeti’s best. Transformed in 2019 from its humbler origins, Namiri Plains is now a collection of 10 solar-powered tents and tricked-out common areas, all crafted from ancient sedimentary rock, resulting in a fabulous, fossil-chic vibe. With outdoor salas in each tent and prolific design-forward spaces along the Ngare Nanyuki riverbed, there are ample swoonworthy spots for reflecting on the day’s adrenalinefilled, feline-forward adventures.

SEEK OUT THE ARTS AND CULTURE IN THE BUSH. While wildlife will always be the main draw of a Serengeti safari, many properties are going the extra mile to showcase the region’s artistic and cultural assets. Case in point: the aforementioned Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, home to the likes of an artist-in-residence program, an inspiring Discovery Center, and Boma Grill, a restaurant that celebrates Maasai culture through performance and Tanzanian culture through cuisine. During the year, eight up-and-coming artists complete residencies between two weeks and two months long, painting new works and interacting with guests daily in a studio near the main bar. The Discovery Center is part museum, part lecture theater, with artifacts from across Tanzania, including hominid fossils from Olduvai Gorge, and documentaries screened twice nightly. At Boma Grill, immerse in the authentic song and dance of the Maasai while sampling typical Tanzanian mainland dishes such as savory banana soup and seafood-centric cuisine from Zanzibar like coconut prawn curry.

WEIGH THE RISKS VERSUS THE REWARDS OF TRAVELING NOW. Tanzania and its safari lodges are currently open to international visitors and have been since May 2020. With tourism at recent lows, a lack of human presence (and those pesky vehicles that accompany it) have permitted an unparalleled regeneration within Serengeti National Park and its peripheral reserves. Now, the animal sightings rank arguably the best in recent decades. As one who has ventured on 23 safaris in as many years, my expedition last Novem-

ber topped them all. Both have a comparable base price, similar V-8 power, and the same single-minded focus on luxury—though the Maybach definitely has the cooler rear seats. Seven Seas Yachts’ stunning HERMES SPEEDSTER is a Porsche for the seas

By Howard Walker For aficionados of classic automobiles, the 1954 Porsche Speedster stands out as an icon.

“King of Cool” Steve McQueen used to race one. So did James Dean. It’s the reason you can now expect to pay upward of a quarter of a million dollars to put one in your garage.

It’s no wonder then that UK-based Seven Seas Yachts used the Porsche’s quirky yet instantly recognizable lines as the inspiration for its achingly gorgeous Hermes Speedster runabout.

The Porsche Speedster design cues are hard to miss—from that curvy windshield to the chrome-ringed retro gauges and twin meshed air intakes set in the rear sun pad. As for that

Hermes name, it comes from the ancient Greek god rather than the fancy fashion brand. That being said, the quality is certainly up there with that of the French couturier.

Seven Seas, which maintains a U.S. headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, has been building this rakish 22-footer since 2017. Until recently, the main power source was a 155-horsepower Rotax airplane engine utilizing a Waverunnerlike water jet. It’s a combo that can skim the Speedster across the water at a zippy 45 mph.

These days, however, the builder is aiming to appeal to more environmentally conscious boaters with its zero-emission, all-electric

version, the Speedster E. It comes with a 100kW electric motor juiced by a 30-kW-hour battery pack to deliver a top speed of 36 mph.

Throttle back and, at 6 mph, it’ll run in stealthy silence for up to nine hours on a single charge.

Regardless of whether you select gas or electric, the level of craftsmanship is just astonishing. Every piece of trim, every switch, every fitting is handmade. I love the Art Deco–style stereo, with its wave-patterned stainless-steel facing plate that hinges downward from the dash at the touch of a button. That, and the beautiful Italian Moto-Lita wood-rimmed helm with its polished spokes and shiny rivets.

The teak-soled cockpit boasts seating for five, including two hip-hugging buckets and a rear seat that’s extra deep for lounging. And just so you don’t forget the runabout’s roots, there’s a gold-plated “Speedster” badge on the dash and cockpit sides in the same typeface used for the classic Porsche. For a little protection from the sun, or when an afternoon shower rolls through, just flip forward the folding canvas top which, again, is Porsche-inspired.

As for the design of the glass hull, there’s hardly a straight line. And never forgetting the Porsche connection, the rear looks oh so similar to that of the four-wheeled Speedster.

There’s no shortage of substance to balance all this style either. Seven Seas’ patented “Amfihull” design is said to do away with the typical speedboat characteristic of the bow pointing skyward as the boat leaps onto the plane. Instead, the Hermes maintains a near-horizontal attitude as speed increases.

It’s not a big boat—just 22 feet bow to swimplatformed stern, and a slender 5 feet, 9 inches in the beam. But tipping the scales at 1,500 pounds makes it a breeze to tow behind your road-going Porsche. That water jet sprouting from the transom also keeps the boat’s draught in check. It’ll run in seas less than a foot deep, meaning it’s ideal for Florida’s shallow waters.

Of course, all this craftsmanship and quality doesn’t come cheap. A Rotax-powered Hermes Speedster will set you back around $188,000, while the electric-powered Speedster E stickers at $269,000. Both come lavishly equipped with no options to add.

Shawn Smith-Myers’ Fort Lauderdale home incorporates the beauty of the outdoors into a home that is perfect for entertaining family and friends

By Michelle Havich You can find a lot of things on a golf course—random balls, perhaps a club or two, a variety of South Florida reptiles. If you’re lucky, you can find your dream home.

That is what happened to Shawn Smith-Myers nine years ago.

Her father, Phil Smith, was golfing at Fort Lauderdale’s Coral Ridge Country Club, which he had purchased in 2005, when he noticed the house for sale on the course and called Shawn.

“We were the first people to see it. We made an offer and got it,” 42

she says. Shawn and her husband, Charlie, had been living west of the course on a dry lot and were looking to relocate. “We were mainly looking (for something) on the water and this popped up, and I am so happy.”

For the past five years, the couple has been remodeling the 4,500-square-foot home with DawnElise Hamilton, president and principal designer of Oakland Park-based DawnElise Interiors International. Hamilton has worked with the Smith family on home

projects for several years. The result is a casual, fun, and livable space, perfect for Shawn, Charlie, their daughter Cali, 11, and their dogs Piper and Woody. Shawn also has a son, John, 24, and a daughter, Kaelin, 20.

Using a neutral palette and natural materials with pops of blues and greens, they achieved an open environment that brings the outdoors in. The house is coastal without being overly beachy. All of the furniture is comfortable, yet durable enough to stand up to kids, dogs, family, and friends.

“The woven texture of the window shades, the rough texture of the floor, and the more natural blues and greens I wanted to work into the space, so that the golf course view kind of became part of the house and the house became part of the golf course view,” says Dawn.

One room where the golf course view blends in is the master bedroom. “It’s architecturally just filled with light,” says Dawn. “Two walls are floor-to-ceiling glass and [with] these older ranches in Coral Ridge, you don’t get that.” Sheer green floral drapes flutter behind

blue leather chairs, creating a cozy seating area by the windows.

Color is introduced throughout the house with accent walls in shades of blue and green, throw pillows, area rugs, and art. An original abstract piece over the fireplace was created by local artist Jennifer Haley, who coincidentally graduated from Cardinal Gibbons High School with Shawn. “She came and looked at my house and made [the painting] specifically for the colors in the house,” says Shawn.

The layout of the main area of the house was opened up, so living spaces blend together. That required a bit of construction, with a steel beam installed in the ceiling in order to remove two columns that were in the dining area, so it could be opened up into the living room. The bar area is open to the formal dining room, and is a popular place for adults to hang out, with a seating area that overlooks the pool and golf course.

“We’re not that formal, so it’s just a good space for entertaining,” says Shawn. “There are areas where the kids can go, and the living room/bar area where the adults can hang out. The kids can be in the TV room, or back in my daughter’s room, or outside. There are just so many different areas, so you’re not on top of one another.”

Cali’s room has an adjacent TV room accented with a beautiful wave mural, and is the one room that breaks away from the neutral palette of the rest of the house. The walls are a pale dove gray,

but the accent wall in the bedroom is covered in an oversized black-and-white, leafy wallpaper, while the curtains, rug, and bedding are bold shades of green and turquoise. Fun “tween” touches in the suite include a round, suspended chair in the TV room and a furry bench at the foot of the bed.

“Thankfully, Dawn had redone my daughter’s room pre-COVID, and there was a good workspace in there for her,” says Shawn. “We didn’t have to scramble and find a desk or find a place to do her work.” The workspace is highlighted with mini chandeliers and a sequined backing on Cali’s chair.

Shawn’s favorite space is the kitchen, which was the first room they remodeled along with the family room. “I love the look of the kitchen,” she says. “I like to cook, and with the seating around the island, people can be sitting there while I am cooking and it’s open into the family room, so you can talk to everyone.”

During COVID, Shawn has been cooking more than usual. “I have watched a lot of cooking blogs and have tried to recreate

a healthier version of some of our favorite meals.”

While the family doesn’t really go many places right now, Shawn is involved with the family’s business, the Phil Smith Automotive Group, where Charlie is a senior partner. Shawn also is on the board of the Phil & Susan Smith Family Foundation with her mother, Susan, and assists in fundraising for her daughter’s school and the Humane Society of Broward County. She has chaired the annual Angel PAWS luncheon with Susan for nine years.

“Our family has been involved with the Humane Society for as long as I can remember,” says Shawn, “and we have also adopted several of our pets from there.”

Plans for the 2021 Angel PAWS event are still being finalized, and the show will, in a way, go on. “We ob

viously won’t be able to do the luncheon like we do every year,” she says. Plans include an online auction of gently used handbags, along with a possible virtual fashion show. “It’s not going to be the same, so we’re not going to even try to make it the same.”

While the whole world is not the same for now, family remains the constant for Shawn. “It has been nice because we are able to spend more time with the kids,” she says. “We try to go for night time bike rides, or boating a little more as a family.”

Also a constant: home renovations. “We have the master bath left, and then I think we’re done,” Shawn says, laughing. “I’ll never be done, especially according to my husband.” «

Lofty Goals Michelle DiMarco transforms Fort Lauderdale’s Lilac and Lilies Loft—and her home—to reflect a sense of substance and style

By Linda Marx Photography by Ian Jacob Michelle DiMarco, 40, fell in love with fashion at an early age by exploring her mother’s closet. Today, she owns Lilac and Lilies Boutique in Fort Lauderdale. Recently rebranded as an interactive warehouse space called The Lilac and Lilies Loft, the boutique offers unique designer apparel, accessories, and beauty products geared to the cosmopolitan customer.

Raised in New Port Richey and Boca Raton by a single mother from Cuba, DiMarco says she enjoyed a healthy independence, especially in recognizing her roots and culture, and in the changing world of fashion.

As a young girl, she remembers playing dress-up. “I would invite my friends over after school, and we hosted our own fashion shows,” she recalls. “Mom dressed me in kooky skirts, cute jeans, and put my hair in pigtails. I knew then that I wanted a fashion career of some sort, and I have always loved street style.”

In 2009, DiMarco launched Lilac and Lilies, a brick-andmortar fashion boutique specializing in fashion-forward trends and styles for the chic contemporary woman. Her first location was in Lauderdale-by-the Sea. “I have been shopping at Lilac and Lilies since Michelle opened the store,” says customer Kym Klein. “I hate shopping but love going there because everyone is so helpful.

They put together outfits for me because they know the inventory and what I need to look my best. It is a special

place where I can buy clothing and accessories to wear all over Fort Lauderdale.”

The store’s unique inventory plays off of DiMarco’s world view and travel experiences. “I visited wherever I could, including Ghana, Thailand, and Shanghai. Travel has helped me grow my business and select merchandise that is appropriate for the needs of my customers,” says DiMarco. “I love how visiting new places awakens me to the world and changes my thinking after seeing how others live.”

Her thought process is what guides her as she hand-selects brands to include in her inventory—like L*Space resortwear (bathing suits, loungewear), Blank NYC (apparel, including denim), ASTR The Label (dresses, bodysuits, tops, bottoms, jumpsuits), itGirl (young and trendy), and Veronica M (maxi dresses, jumpsuits).

“I look for great quality, on trend, and affordable price points,” says DiMarco, who took Lilac and Lilies to the next level in 2011 when she opened a larger boutique on Sunrise Boulevard across from The Galleria

Customer Dr. Barbie Fiallo says DiMarco goes out of her way to carry well-made brands that are on trend. “Last year, I bought a dress for New Year’s Eve that was filled with glitter and exactly what I was looking for,” she says. “Even better, you can look up Lilac and Lilies on Instagram, find something you like, call, and they will find the size and get it right away.”

DiMarco has helped her to evolve her style. “Michelle and her team pull different things together and offer more trendy styles than I would have ever created for myself,” she says. “They got me into leather leggings, a cool faux leather jacket, and trendy heels, and I love it.” Local media personality Kavita Channe agrees: “Whether I have a red carpet event, a TV appearance, or a special evening out, Michelle’s team members are simply amazing and on point when they find what looks good on me.”

DiMarco loves offering her clients these kinds of personal touches but admits that providing such great service comes with a few caveats.

“I worked so hard, seven days a week, all the time,” she says of her retail career. “I went on buying trips to Atlanta and Las Vegas because I like the West Coast designers. I attended two trade shows a year, always running and busy. I loved it but really pushed myself to the max.”

When the coronavirus hit, she retreated to the Fort Lauderdale townhome she designed four years ago—a safe haven from the threat of the pandemic. Not surprisingly, DiMarco’s fashion aesthetics carry over into her home decor. “My home design style is eclectic. I like whimsical, which fits my personality, not too modern or too traditional,” she says. “I

The cozy casa gave DiMarco the time and space to reevaluate her life—to truly consider what she wanted to do personally and professionally. She researched everything she could about e-commerce and decided to close the Sunrise store and to launch the new Lilac and Lilies Loft on North West 1st Ave. in Fort Lauderdale.

In addition to the clothing she’s become known for, she has expanded her business to include beauty products and has begun hosting live events, as well.

“We have photo shoots, host wine and Champagne parties, intimate events, fundraisers for charity, styling sessions, and encourage high-tech activity thanks to the success of Instagram stories,” DiMarco says. “Plus, the Loft is super cute!”

DiMarco’s new endeavor also affords her more personal time to do things outside of work—and enjoy the warmth and comfort of her stylish home. “I have a healthy mix of mind, body, and spirit now,” she says. “I like to come back to my house at the end of the day. To welcome the season and honor the tradition, this month’s cocktail comes directly from the pages of my newly published book, Low-Proof Happy Hour, your guide to low-alcohol cocktails for times when you’d prefer to keep things light while still enjoying a proper drink.

Enter: The Sakura Mule. Featuring a sweet, fragrant syrup of sakura blossoms, this elegant libation adds a soft, intoxicating zing to a mule. It is made low proof by substituting the vodka with shochu, a Japanese spirit distilled on a base of sweet potato, barley, rice, buckwheat, and/or sugar cane, and clocking in at half the alcohol of most high-proof spirits. You can mix the syrup directly into the drink or freeze it into ice cubes and let it melt for a subtle burst of flavor. —Jules Aron
