Fort Lauderdale’s food scene has been exploding in recent months. Fueled by consumer exuberance and an appetite for new experiences, restaurants have been popping up and, in some cases, reinventing all over town. This is why our February issue is devoted to the city’s foodies and the dining they crave.

Let’s start with brunch. Travel editor (and Fort Lauderdale resident) Paul Rubio thoroughly researched the options for the mid-morning meal and emerged sated with knowledge—and crab doughnuts, and frosé, and Wagyu steak and eggs—to impart to our readers. If you enjoy spending weekends with friends over bottomless Bloody Marys and an incredible array of deliciousness, you’ll want to check out Paul’s report, “Best of Brunch,” on page 48.

We also had the exclusive on Melissa Etheridge’s visit to Fort Lauderdale to co-host a vegan lunch with locals Maggie Viola and Albert Balido. Melissa and Maggie have a cancer journey, and a subsequent focus on wellness and nutrition, in common. A plant-based diet is a way of life for both women, so they wanted to share a vegan table with friends to show how delicious living foods can be. Fort Lauderdale Illustrated was fortunate to be invited to chronicle the day, and the result is “Powered by Plants” on page 54. Don’t miss it.

Beginning next month, I will be passing the editorial baton to our senior editor, Kristen Desmond LeFevre, who was recently promoted to editor in chief of FLI. I will continue to oversee the magazine as editorial director, but Kristen will be focusing on local content with help from our stellar editorial team. The inspiration for the business came from owner Ivana Pejdanovska’s love of fragrances and clean scents. “People always compliment my house and how good it smells, so I wanted to create a product that’s not only free of toxins, but it also makes your house smell yummy,” she explains.

First-timers can book a 45-minute, step-by-step class that begins

with choosing a vessel for your candle. From there, pick a scent that resonates with you, such as White Tea, Palo Santo, or Gardenia. After mixing up the ingredients, you’ll then decorate the candle with a choice of “toppings,” including dried flowers, gold flakes, and glitter. Guests are welcome to hang out and sip wine and food brought from home while waiting for the candle to set or explore nearby businesses before picking up the finished product. About five years ago, Rob Kennish and his wife, Stacey, met Russell Knutson at a dog park with their Great Danes.

Together, they’d frequent hot spots that served beer with patios and outside eating areas, however, something was missing. “We were frustrated that we couldn’t go to a bar and have drinks while having our dogs off the leash,” explains Kennish. In July they opened a joint dog park and bar named Barkyard n’ Brews in downtown Lauderdale. The 10,000-squarefoot dog park features a splash pad with a beer garden offering beer, seltzer, and wine. There’s also corn hole, Jenga, Foosball, TVs, and plenty of food trucks. (barkyardnbrews.com)

Do you have any regulations?

Every dog over the age of 10 months must be spayed or neutered. All dogs must be vaccinated for rabies, distemper, and Bordetella (proof is required). Dogs under 4 months are not permitted in the off-leash area due to safety concerns. All dogs are welcome as long as they are fixed, have current vaccinations, and are sociable around other dogs.

We host yoga in the park, and coming soon will be dog agility training classes and movie night in the park.

Oenophiles have a new spot: Sidewalk Bottle Shop in Flagler Village. Created by David Lopez and Walter Navarro, this outpost features natural wines from all over the world for purchase in addition to by-theglass options and a tapas menu. “I waited a long time for this location,” says Lopez, who recently moved to Fort Lauderdale.

Previously, when he’d visit, he always stopped at Laser Wolf, a locals’ favorite watering hole, and fell in love with the triangularshaped, Spanish-influenced building. At Sidewalk Bottle Shop, guests can take any bottle off the wine wall and hang out inside or out for a small corkage fee. What matters most for the duo is bringing people together. “There’s nothing better for social events than opening an amazing bottle of wine and sharing it with friends,” says Lopez. The Backpack BARBER

Greg Young still remembers when he hit rock bottom. He was 29 and had just gotten arrested for the fifteenth time.

He grew up in a dysfunctional family, battled substance abuse, and was homeless on and off while hustling on the streets.

“I was reckless,” says Young, now 37. “I didn’t have a care for life. I had no other choice but to create more havoc.”

After almost totaling a car, Young returned home and says his stepson gave him the wakeup call he needed. “That night I saw all the fear in my child,” he recalls. “I started to understand who I was as a person and understand life on life’s terms.

I got clarity. I started to love myself.”

Young is now nine years sober and has found a new passion: being a barber. He opened Noblemen’s Cut and Shave in 2016, alongside his business partner, Kevin Grande. At his downtown Fort Lauderdale space, Young can learn from those who sit in his chair, gaining knowledge from football stars Dan Marino, Ryan Tannehill, and Tua Tagovailoa, among others.

Determined to become a “difference-maker,” Young started providing free haircuts to homeless people. He’d also supply them 20

This month, Andy Cagnetta, CEO of Transworld Business Advisors, will raise money for LifeNet4Families with his annual Family Pasta Dinner. Taking place at the Signature Grand February 20, the event includes a family-style pasta dinner, silent and live auctions, children’s activities, and more. The gathering began in 2003 when Cagnetta became a board member and was trying to raise money for the nonprofit, which provides a gateway to stability for people in Broward County who experience hunger, homelessness, and poverty. Since its inception, Cagnetta has raised almost $2 million for LifeNet4Families. “Our goal keeps going up,” he says. “It’s all about giving money to LifeNet so they can provide their services. It caught on, and in 2017 he founded the Backpack Barber Foundation. On Wednesdays, he heads to city hall’s Community Court downtown to cut hair for the homeless, and on Mondays he assists the Jack & Jill Center by cutting kids’ hair. He also does outreach with HANDY and the Broward Partnership. Most recently he launched a men’s grooming line called Noble by Greg Young, with a percentage of profits benefiting his foundation.

“I want to be a philanthropist full-time,” says Young. “I want to travel, open chapters [of my foundation], and work with other individuals who are experiencing what I experienced.” (thebackpackbarberfoundation.com)

FLI: What do you enjoy most about being president and CEO of the symphony?

Lorber: It’s been my honor and privilege to grow the South Florida Symphony Orchestra into the force that it has become. We’re known as the “orchestra of the future” because of our approach to presenting a full array of music, our forwardthinking embrace of diversity, and the way we work with all aspects of the community.

How did the symphony continue its performances during the pandemic?

Lober: We focused on what we could do instead of what we couldn’t do. We focused on providing our musicians with work and patron engagement. We had a virtual wine tasting in Napa Valley, recitals, and filmed and delivered our entire “Masterworks” season.

Maestra Alfonso, you’ve been at the helm of the symphony since its inception. What have the past few decades leading this extraordi-

nary group been like for you?

Alfonso: You could say it has been my life. The symphony’s life became and is a part of me. I feel we have become a fabric of the communities of South Florida and their children. The effort of this incredible organization is truly being felt and seen, and it’s exhilarating when it all comes together.

How often does the symphony perform?

Alfonso: Our musicians are constantly performing around the area. We perform [through April] in our “Masterworks” series. May through August we perform our chamber series. Our venues are The Parker in Fort Lauderdale, Temple Israel of Greater Miami,

and Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West.

Tell us about the return of in-person experiences.

Alfonso: Part of the emotion when we perform to a live audience is the feeling of their energy.

The orchestra and the audience have a mutual excitement over being together again. The audiences cannot contain themselves and have been exuberant during the concerts. We can feel that, and it lifts us even more. I can say it makes normal feel very special.

Why do you feel the arts are important in a city’s cultural makeup?

Alfonso: The arts come from human nature. This is from us, within us. It is a discipline that has produced great artists, musicians, dancers, poets, etc.

It is the beauty of the human soul. It replenishes us; it feeds our emotions, our intellect, and our inner child. To take what is a natural human instinct and raise it to its highest form for all to hear and see is the greatest gift we can give to our communities. Excellence becomes a way of life.

Tips for eating your way to a LONG, HEALTHY life

I

n recent decades, talk of Blue Zones— regions where people not only live the longest, but also experience lower rates of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and Alzheimer’s—has permeated longevity discussions. Researchers have found numerous contributing factors that these regions share, but perhaps the most important commonality is diet.

In America, the No. 1 cause of death is heart disease, and what Americans eat greatly contributes to this. Close to 70 percent of packaged foods in the U.S. contain added sugars, which can be identified by up to 56 names. In addition to cane sugar, these empty calories commonly go by words ending in “ose”: fructose (think high-fructose corn syrup), dextrose, sucrose, and maltose to name a few. Processed foods are also a large part of American diets. Processed meats, cookies, chips, and sweets are all packed with sodium, preservatives, and chemical additives. Refined sugar and processed products are the worst foods for longevity.

Blue Zones residents aren’t counting calories or religiously reading labels—in fact, they rarely eat anything with a label at all. Longevity diets center around whole foods. The less processed a food is, the more efficiently the body can absorb the nutrients and use them to fuel cells. The body thrives on lean sources of protein, beans, nuts, and whole vegetables, fruits, and grains. Key things to consume regularly include leafy greens (spinach, kale, collards, chard), fiber-rich foods (apples, berries), and fats derived from plants (olive oil, avocados) as they are much healthier than animal-based fats.

It’s also wise to limit meat consumption to no more than twice a week. When you do eat meat, make sure it is pasture-raised and therefore free of hormones, pesticides, and antibiotics and much richer in heart-healthy omega-3s. In general, choose fish or plant protein over meat, limit mercury-rich fish like swordfish and tuna, and avoid farmed fish that are high in antibiotics, pesticides, and artificial coloring.

SECRETS FOR LONGEVITY

Eat mostly plants. Aim to make plants 90 percent of your diet. Use olive or avocado oil over butter and choose nut milks and nut cheeses over cow’s

milk. Incorporate plant protein sources like beans, nuts, and seeds instead of meats and whey protein powders.

Don’t eat anything that contains more than five ingredients or any ingredients you can’t pronounce.

If you don’t recognize it, neither will your body.

If you’re not hungry, don’t eat.

I like to think of the space between meals as sacred. Giving your body a break from digestion and time to clean and turn over cells is hugely beneficial to your health.

Exercise regularly. Not only is it good for cardiovascular health, but it’s also wonderful for brain and bone health.

HUMMUS INGREDIENTS

2 cups chickpeas

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. cumin

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/2-1/3 cup tahini

(1 large lemon)

1 garlic clove, minced

» Rinse and strain

1/4-1/3 cup ice water

chickpeas. In a saucepan, add chickpeas, baking soda, and enough water to cover by 2 inches. Boil for 20 minutes. During this time, add lemon juice, garlic, salt, and cumin to a blender or food processor and let it sit while the chickpeas boil. This neutralizes the garlic a bit. When the chickpeas are done, rinse and strain again and set aside.

Add tahini to the blender and pulse a few times. This is the most crucial step for getting super creamy hummus: While running the blender with the lemon, garlic, tahini, and salt combo, slowly add in the ice water. The texture should be thick and creamy. If it’s too thick, add a little more ice water.

Toss in chickpeas and cumin and blend for 1 minute, scraping sides down as you go. If it’s not creamy enough, you can always add more ice water, but it really needs to be ice cold.

HERBED “CHEEZE” INGREDIENTS

2 cups raw macadamia nuts 1/4 cup lemon juice 1/2 tsp. salt

1 tbsp. nutritional yeast 1 tbsp. parsley 1 tbsp. chives 1/2 cup water

» Add all ingredients except water to a high-

speed blender. Blend until creamy, adding water gradually and scraping down sides as you go. Serve with sliced raw vegetables.

1 1/2 cup frozen strawberries 1 banana 2 tbsp. chia seeds

1 tbsp. peanut butter

2 tbsp. hemp seeds

1 date

2 tbsp. ground flax seeds

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

EGGPLANT “SALAMI” INGREDIENTS

1 eggplant, sliced crosswise into round discs 1 tbsp. coconut aminos

2 tsp. maple syrup 3 tbsp. avocado oil Salt and pepper to taste

Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until creamy.

1/2 tsp. smoked paprika

Whisk together coconut aminos, smoked paprika, maple syrup, and avocado oil. Arrange eggplant discs on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Using a pastry brush, brush mixture onto each side of the discs.

Broil on high for 15 minutes, flipping halfway.

As the minutes pass from sunrise to sunset, the Taj Mahal’s exterior dazzles with an ever-changing kaleidoscope of colors best appreciated from multiple vantage points. One of India’s most wellpreserved citadels, the fortress boasts prolific courtyards, towering gates, cobbled paths, and imposing ramparts. Next is Jantar Mantar, an eighteenth-century observatory that showcases the ingenuity of Sawai Jai Singh II, Amber’s former ruler; his 300-year-old instruments are still used to tell time and predict weather and natural events.

Finally, a stroll through Jaipur’s pink-tinted streets reveals a shopper’s paradise of fine goods and souvenirs. Pick up handcrafted jewelry festooned with precious and semi-precious stones, handwoven carpets, made-to-order dresses, and solid marble handicrafts—most at prices too good to believe. NEWER DELHI

Thirty-plus million residents strong, the mega metropolis of greater Delhi is a polarizing one. Some feel it’s an essential part of any visit to India, while others dread even an overnight stay in the country’s capital.

Thankfully, Oberoi has properties to suit both mindsets.

Dating to 1965, The Oberoi New Delhi is a storied landmark hotel that’s hosted the who’s who of politics, Hollywood, and Bollywood. The all-new Mercedes-Benz SL roadster is a performance TOUR DE FORCE

By Howard Walker Remember an Armani-clad Richard Gere behind the wheel of that gleaming black MercedesBenz 450 SL in the 1980 classic American Gigolo? With Blondie’s “Call Me” booming in the background, the SL cruising along the Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu was a rolling testament to brooding lust, elegance, and perfectly gelled hair.

Alas, in recent years the oh-soclassy SL has lost much of its mojo as our love for drop-top sportscars has taken a nosedive. But the SL (short for Sport Light) is too big a nameplate for Mercedes to give up willingly. After all, those two little letters have been gracing the trunk lids of low-slung Benz sportsters since the legendary 300 SL debuted in 1952.

So, drumroll please: The SL is back, brand new from the wheels up, with huge changes that include standard all-wheel drive, a return to a canvas top in place of a folding metal lid, two-plus-two seating, and V8 power. And to show how invested Mercedes is in its SL renaissance, it handed over development to the performance wizards at AMG—hence the two-seater’s fancy new name, Mercedes-AMG SL. Two versions will be on offer come springtime. Take your pick from the new SL 55, powered by an AMG-massaged 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 44

cranking out 469 hp, or the muscled-up SL 63 with a 577-hp version of that turbine-smooth V8.

Gone is the bland, slightly milquetoast look of the previous generation model. Now it boasts a six-pack and a bulldog stance. Peep that barred-teeth front end in your rearview and trust me, you’re moving over. Its lower air intakes are big enough to swallow decent-sized critters, and a retro front grille and swept-back LED lights contribute to its intimidating mystique.

Climb aboard, slide a finger across the iPad-like 11.9-inch tilting center screen, and that canvas top retracts in a zippy 15 seconds and at speeds of up to 37 mph. Of course, there are those who will lament the jettisoning of the folding metal roof. As a Floridian, I liked the duality it gave—offering the choice of coupe for summer, convertible for winter—

but it gobbled up too much trunk space, added weight, and raised the car’s center of gravity, compromising ultimate handling. It also meant you couldn’t have rear seats, which is one of the new SL’s attractions. Not that anyone over the age of 5 is going to fit back there. Legroom is on a par with Allegiant economy or a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe. It’s the perfect place for a gym bag or a small Labrador.

But this SL isn’t about dropping tops and trunk space. It’s all about driving. It’s a trait I experienced firsthand when I had the pleasure of flying to Southern California and exercising it on God’s driving roads, from Orange County across the San Jacinto Mountains to Palm Springs.

First up was the SL 55. Even though it’s the milder of the two flavors, it still feels breathtaking in the way it catapults off the line and rushes to 60 mph in a mere 3.8 seconds.

Rocketship performance, however, isn’t the 55’s only party piece. The way the car scythes around ridiculously tight curves, its all-wheel

MJM Yachts’ new 38-foot 3z is an open dayboat FOR ALL SEASONS

By Howard Walker You’d like Mary Johnstone’s motorboat. She’s the MJ in MJM Yachts, who back in the early 2000s wanted a boat she and her sailboat genius husband, Bob, could enjoy with friends and family.

Not able to find just the right one, she and Bob—who happens to be the Johnstone behind those legendary J/Boats—decided to create their own. They set up MJM Yachts in 2002 to build MJMs, short for Mary Johnstone’s Motorboats.

These days their son, Peter, runs the company out of a factory in Washington, North Carolina. And now, after a couple decades turning out elegant, Down East–style, cabined motor yachts, they’ve just introduced their first outboardpowered dayboat, the 38-foot MJM 3z.

Of course, it’s not as if the 46

world needs another outboard dayboat. But this new 3z raises the bar in design, versatility, practicality, performance, and style.

It helps that leading naval architect Doug Zurn, who has penned the lines of all six MJM models over the years, handled this design too. In fact, the “z” in 3z reflects Zurn’s considerable input in making MJMs ride so smoothly, handle with such precision, and look so jawdroppingly cool.

What Zurn has so expertly crafted is a fun, all-weather dayboat that can accommodate extremes of heat, cold, and rain. When the sun shines, there’s masses of outdoor space for soaking up rays. Up in the bow there’s a spacious U-shaped, wraparound sofa and mirror-varnished hilo table. On the aft deck, there’s another U-shaped lounger with an ohso-clever fold-down center section that morphs into a sun pad.

But what sets the 3z apart is its big-windowed, hardtop pilothouse.

At the push of a button, the three windshield windows open electrically. Now slide open the huge side windows and roll up the aft Strataglass panels to welcome in the cool air. If the temp rises, all those windows can be closed and the AC cranked up to give some relief.

The pilothouse boasts comfy bench seats on either side—they make

great beds for afternoon naps or impromptu sleepovers—plus a table with fold-out leaves for inside dining. Lift the seats and there’s huge storage underneath. Hidden doors in the consoles beneath the windshield reveal a surprisingly spacious toilet and shower on one side and a changing room–cum–kids’ nap cabin– cum–storage room on the other.

Avowed vegan and multiplatinum rocker MELISSA ETHERIDGE headlines a plant-based Fort Lauderdale luncheon hosted by Maggie Viola and Albert Balido

nown for her tell-all lyrics and smoky vocals, Melissa Etheridge has been a radio staple for more than three decades. She rocked her way onto the music scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled album. In 1992, she won her first Grammy Award. In 1996, she was named Songwriter of the Year at the ASCAP Pop Awards.

But in 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer. Like most people facing a life-threatening diagnosis, Etheridge was eager to beat the disease and move on with her life and career. But treatment was not easy. As she underwent chemotherapy in Los Angeles, Etheridge says she used cannabis to help with the difficult side effects. “Cannabis was medicinal and helped with my appetite, pain, and depression,” she says.

Eventually, Etheridge beat cancer. She says that the extensive research she did during her cancer journey—learning more about the relationship between cancer and certain foods—helped her make the switch to a purely plant-based diet. Eighteen years later, Etheridge says she feels great, and she’s eager to share that bliss with the world.

“While cannabis helped with my own joy, a plant-based diet and lifestyle is part of my desire for good health,” says the musician/activist, who 54

co-founded two companies reflecting her interests: Etheridge Organics line of CBD supplements, which are sold in 38 states, and Etheridge Botanicals line of cannabis, which is available in California.

Two years ago, Etheridge met Maggie Viola, a Fort Lauderdale–based marketing specialist. The two women shared not only a cancer battle, but also a dedication to the benefits of the vegan lifestyle. “We were doing a benefit for horse rescue in Los Angeles when I met Maggie shortly before the coronavirus shut things down,” says Etheridge. “We became friends after discovering our like minds.” Viola now helps Etheridge market her CBD and cannabis products.

Viola—who is vegan and also an afficionado of the power of plant and herb medicine—says getting to know Etheridge has been a privilege. “We are both on a wellness journey,” says Viola, who recovered from cervical cancer several years ago. “Melissa also healed holistically from cancer, so we have that in common. She was a perfect person to invite to our recent vegan lunch because we have a high spiritual connection, and she aligns with the thinking of the rest of our guests.”

Viola and her life partner, Albert Balido—a lobbyist and co-founder of Anfield Consulting—organized this vegan luncheon in their Fort Lauderdale home to celebrate and raise money for Debris Free Oceans. The Miami-based nonprofit inspires locals to responsibly manage the life cycle of plastics and waste as part of an international initiative to eradicate marine debris from beaches, reefs, and oceans.

Caiti Waks, executive director of Debris Free Oceans and a guest at the luncheon, says everyone can help stop the clutter and destruction of our beaches by eliminating single-use plastic. “By trying reusable things, we can be more sustainable and we can make change at the local level. We need to support community leaders and businesses that already do this.”

Guests were greeted with a mocktail created by mixologist, author, and wellness coach Jules Aron. The refreshing drink was a combination of Etheridge Organics Pure Harmony herbal supplement, botanical syrup (lavender, rose, holy basil, blue spirulina powder), lemon-lime juice, and Fever Tree sparkling lime and yuzu mixer.

Mocktails soon mixed with appetizers created by two former celebrity TV chefs. A dumpling with ponzu and chili oil was prepared by chef Robyn Almodovar of PAOW! in Lake Worth— who appeared as a judge on the Food Network’s Food Truck Face Off and also won both Cutthroat Kitchen and Chopped. The second appetizer was a miso eggplant made by Top Chef contestant Josie Smith Malave, owner of Bubbles & Pearls, a Champagne and raw bar in Wilton Manors.

Before the guests sat down for lunch, Almodovar described the plant-based food she creates for PAOW!, which stands for “people and our world.”

she says. “All we use is soy, salt, and water to produce great flavor. Carnivores are afraid of plant-based food, but it is all about textures. And we do that well.”

The meal began with pickled and pureed carrots with smoked carrot salt and PAOW! chips, followed by a second course of steamed rice noodles with toasted peanuts, Chinese broccoli, and scallions in a sweet soy peanut sauce. Curry with mushrooms and rice came next, then a final dish of fall root vegetable risotto. Dessert was Almodovar’s three-way coconut cake, and Malave’s silken tofu custard was served with crispy rice, nori caramel, and tart pomegranate.

Although Viola, Etheridge, and the rest of the luncheon’s guests are already devoted to a plantbased diet, Almodovar was pleased to see the group enjoy the vegan menu. “You are what you eat,” says Almodovar. “And food should not be difficult.” « 58

Leap of FAITH

A historic church is converted into a trio of venues for drinking and dining that has Laudy locals shouting hallelujah

P

icture this: An abandoned church on a busy Fort Lauderdale intersection is waiting for its second revival. But instead of being turned into a space for worship (again), it’s deconsecrated and transformed into something only South Florida visionaries would think of: a restaurant-nightclub experience.

That’s what you’ll find at the reimagined First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Flagler Village. It recently received an interior facelift so divine, it’s drawing a new kind of flock to Northeast Third Avenue for good food (and even better beats) since opening in the winter of 2021.

It all began a few years ago when hospitality extraordinaire David

Cardaci and his wife and business partner, Vanessa, learned about the deserted space. “We had an opportunity to open a venue in a 100-yearold church,” says David. “Who wouldn’t take that opportunity?”

The co-founder of Knallhart Management Group—which is behind successful Fort Lauderdale concepts including Rhythm & Vine, The Wilder, and The Whole Enchilada—initially wanted to open something along the lines of a 24-hour diner. He called up noted Fort Lauderdale chef Giovanni Rocchio, who’s best known for formerly operating the Italian restaurant Valentino’s and the tapas-centric One Door East, both of which closed in 2020. David asked Rocchio if he was interested

in taking a hiatus from retired life to help conceptualize the church’s culinary program. “I came to see [the space], and I said, ‘This could be something as special as Valentino’s,’” recalls Rocchio.

Things changed drastically after that phone call. “I realized I had to turn it up like 10 notches because it’s Giovanni,” David says of the illustrious chef agreeing to come on board. “He’s one of the best operators that Fort Lauderdale has ever seen when it comes to food. So, we did. We turned it up. I think we’ve built something Fort Lauderdale has never seen.”

Together, they designed a destination that they felt was lacking in town. “If people want to go out and have a good time, they want to have a night,” explains David, who believes people often gravitate toward Miami. “There are some great places here, but they’re good and safe.

It’s nothing spectacular. We wanted to do something that you can find in major metropolitan markets around the country.”

THE HOLY TRINITY The building has kept much of its original architectural charm of stained-glass windows and vaulted ceilings but is now home to a cocktail room, restaurant, and club that offers food and drinks so good, it’s nearly a religious experience. Read on to learn about all three.

HOLLY BLUE Officially opened in December, Holly Blue has become somewhat of a must-visit spot for foodies and out-of-towners alike. The menu is flexible in its offerings but consistently underscored by raw fish and vegetables. Holly Blue’s chef de cuisine Nicolay Adinaguev (who previously worked with Michael Schwartz and Starr Restaurants) and sous chef Harry Capacetti (who worked with Paula DeSilva and at restaurants such as the Miami Beach Edition and Unit B Kitchen & Eatery) conceptualized many of the dishes. Dubbed as “international American,” the food blends a mélange of Valentino’s classics with new flavors.

“We’re not sticking to one particular style of cuisine,” says Adinaguev. “We’re doing what tastes good and what we like.”

The menu will change depending on the seasons and evolve along with its clientele, with highlights like beef tartare with cornichon relish, Dijon mustard, a sous vide egg yolk jam, and truffle cream served with brioche. “It’s playfully plated and a classic dish,” says Adinaguev. The local burrata is taken to the next level thanks to Capacetti’s additions of crispy squash, cranberry compote, and pepitas. The cheese is seasoned with lemon salt and pink peppercorns, dressed in a truffle vinaigrette, and topped with pumpkin seeds. And while the mains range, they all pair compelling flavors with artful presentation. There’s roasted red snapper and cavatelli osso buco, pan-roasted prime tomahawk steak, and even a cauliflower steak for vegetarians.

It’s not just what’s on the plate that has diners singing Holly Blue’s praises—it’s also what they see around them. “I think we create transportive places,” Vanessa says of the brand’s approach to design.

“You walk into Rhythm & Vine, and you’re like, 62

But don’t expect big-name headliners stealing the show on weekends; the programming will instead focus on local acts and DJs.

and David’s past European adventures. The restaurant extends onto an outdoor veranda with a wooden deck, lush foliage, twinkle lights, and another bar. This space is poised to be the ultimate #SundayFunday hot spot once brunch rolls out soon— and that’s just the restaurant.

For Fort Lauderdale locals, this reimagination is an answered prayer. No matter which concept you discover first, the team agrees you’ll be in for a surprise each time you stop by. “Maybe you met people for cocktails and you never made it out to the veranda, or maybe you didn’t know Marvin’s Room was there,” says Vanessa.

“You could visit here three to four times and still have a memorable experience.” «

The team’s interpretation of an authentic, oldschool hangout, Marvin’s Room is an intimate cocktail lounge replete with leather and velvet seating. The menu deviates from the one at Holly Blue and boasts some extraordinary gems—like a $1,000 tipple served with a diamond necklace.

THE ANGELES Rounding out the concept is The Angeles, the nightclub aspect of the church that David says can go head-to-head with any nightlife experience in the state. It features bottle service and a secondfloor VIP lounge, plus the added thrill of partying in what used to be the chapel—stained glass still intact.

Chef ’s CHOICE Fans of the Japanese-Korean restaurant Takato at The Conrad will take a liking to its new sister concept, Oku by Takato. The private, 10-seat omakase (meaning “chef’s choice”) lounge led by executive chef Taek “Taka” Lee is accessible through a hidden entrance. Once inside, guests embark upon a culinary journey of more than 15 courses, underscored

by ingredients flown in fresh from Japan and Korea. A tasting in December featured the likes of scallop with shaved truffle and uni toast with caviar and pâté. Each dish is prepared front and center, so there are ample opportunities to mingle with the chefs and learn more about what’s being served. Aside from favorites such as Wagyu and toro (aka the fattiest part of a tuna), guests can also sample traditional cuisine like the Japanese egg custard known as chawanmushi. BLOODY MARY GO-TO: Rosie’s in Wilton Manors. Rosie’s is always a great time, and I love to go on the weekends and enjoy the energy of the community.

Their Bloody Marys have the right amount of bite and flavor. You have to be careful, though, because you can’t have just one.

GUILTY PLEASURE: The Jamaican sub from Publix BEST SUSHI: Phat Boy Sushi & Kitchen FAVE UNDER-THE-RADAR RESTAURANT: Poke Ramen at the Tower Shops in Davie. I just discovered ramen. I know, I’m late and I’m obsessed.

BLOODY MARY GO-TO: Java & Jam on Las Olas has a great Bloody Mary bar with so many different liquors, mixes, and garnishes to choose from. My favorite is the spicy mix with bacon.

FAVORITE MARGS: El Camino is my top spot for both margaritas and happy hour. The Watermelon-Jalapeño is great if you like sweet and spicy, and the Spicy Avocado is so refreshing.

GUILTY PLEASURE: Chocolate-covered graham crackers from Kilwins DOES DATE NIGHT AT: Eddie V’s is intimate and delicious. It has some of the best steak in the city, paired with a long list of signature cocktails.

The Maverick, with lime, cucumber, and jalapeño, is one of my personal favorites.

MORNING GLORY In need of a brunch switch up? Then try the dreamy garden outpost of Bulegreen Café Yard in Oakland Park. “Our café was created with a lot of passion and love,” says Vagner de Carli, who opened the eatery alongside Carlos Ribeiro de Castro in 2018. “We always had this dream to open a place where people could feel homie, and we could serve fresh and homemade food.” The eatery gets its name from the pot the duo uses for brewing coffee at the table, known in Portuguese as a bule. It’s what they consider a “provincial way from the Brazilian farms” to create the old-fashioned coffee concept, while also noting their bules are green. “We love to be eco-friendly,” adds de Carli. Beginning February 5, head to Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach for a lineup of seven fun-filled weekends, with various themes such as opening weekend’s “Pirate Invasion” (February 5-6), “Wonderful World of Wenches” (February 26-27), and “Potter’s Magical Finale” (March 19-20).
