ON THE COVER This beautiful cover street scene of 5th Avenue South, by artist Emily James, owner of The Emily James Gallery was half completed when the alert went out to evacuate for Hurricane Irma. Except for a little missing foliage, James was quite relieved to find the same scene upon her return. In fact, it was 6 months before she could bring herself to complete the painting and celebrate the fact that the Avenue remained as charming as ever. The Emily James Galley is located at 750 Fifth Avenue South, Naples.

If you dine out during your visit to Naples, chances are you’ll spend time in one of Skip Quillen’s restaurants. The chef, trained at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, owns five area establishments that range from casual to formal. Under the umbrellas of Culinary Concepts and NRG, the 60-year-old has developed Pazzo! Cucina Italiana,Yabba Island Grill and Chops City Grill on Naples’ 5th Avenue South, plus The Saloon, in Estero, and a second Chops in nearby Bonita Springs. Other than the Chops duo, each of Quillen’s restaurants has its own decor, menu, and style. They share an emphasis on value, including the more upscale concepts. For example, the Chops steakhouse charges a reasonable price for simple add-ons like baked potatoes, and Yabba offers bottles of wine at an especially low markup, which is a bonus to diners.

Quillen grew up in southern New Jersey and credits the classic chef story to his career. “I had a job at the Jersey Shore washing dishes. The line cooked walked off, so I jumped in to help and found that I liked it,” explains Quillen. A sage colleague urged him to attend culinary school, and in 1978 the young cook began his formal education. After graduation he worked in kitchens around the country, “but I always loved Naples and wanted to come back,” he says. “I still think it’s the nicest place in the world.” Quillen began Culinary Concepts in 1995 with Pazzo! He was in his late 30s, 5th Avenue South had just been revitalized, and along with then-partner Tom Gilbertson, picked Italian cuisine because they felt it was the right cuisine for the area. Pazzo! remains a popular choice among Naples’ foodies, keeping current with its decor and menu while gearing up to undergo a $750,000 face-lift. The signature pastas and fare will soon be served in a more contemporary atmosphere with wood floors and beamed ceilings. Quillen’s newest restaurant, The Saloon, located in Estero, opened a year

ago, and as the name suggests, this restaurant has a casual vibe, with a moderately priced menu featuring wood-smoked steaks and burgers. Surely the Culinary Concepts/NRG repertoire will continue to evolve, with compadres Jennifer Chin, Jan Kerrigan, and Kendra Rizzi, plus Corporate Executive Chefs Jason Mattozzi and Chris Metzler, riding side saddle. “We’re a team of people who have been working together for 23 years,” Quillen adds. So committed is he to sharing the limelight that he insists his co-workers appear in all photographs with him.“As a leader, I have to set the vision and goals, but I wouldn’t be able to get half this stuff done without the right people with me. We try to do things that we love and never stop swinging with both hands.” 5TH AVENUE SOUTH 19

Gallery Hop Find artwork from breezy watercolors to bronze elephants in these 5th Avenue South galleries. BY RONA GINDIN

You can’t just window-shop along 5th Avenue South. Since the Avenue’s galleries display such diverse collectibles, curiosity will lure you in to get a closer look. New or classic, contemporary or conservative, offbeat or antique, a gallery hop along the Avenue has a style to satisfy the pickiest art connoisseur.

Gallery One After a quarter century on 5th Avenue South, Gallery One has become a one-stop shop for art and gifts. Works of more than 250 artists are on display at any one time, says owner Marylou Chronister, and the wares span many art forms. Art glass is particularly well represented. Look for the flowing translucent sculptures of Infinity Glass; Tim Cotterill’s Frogman amphibian bronzes; Freida Rothman’s travel jewelry; Lisa Schuster’s oil-painted aluminum; and Faye Miller’s Judaica items such as glass menorahs, marketed under the brand Shardz.

“If you need to buy a gift, you’ll find something here,” Chronister says, “whether your budget is $50 or $20,000.” galleryonenaples.com Emily James Gallery At the Emily James Gallery, you’ll have an authentic Florida experience. The namesake artist is a Florida native and 25-year resident of Naples. During your visit, she’ll likely be sitting in front of an easel smack in the middle of the gallery, painting with oils, acrylics, or watercolors. If James happens to be out, you’ll still feel her vibe. The walls are covered with original art and prints of her landscapes, seascapes, and abstracts. Emily James Gallery is tucked into a courtyard across from the Sugden Theatre, yet locals and visitors have managed to seek out and discover the gallery since it opened five years ago; many do so specifically to commission work for their residences. “I go to their homes, see the sizes and colors they need, then match a new piece of artwork to their decor,” says James. emilyjamesart.com

The Englishman Fine Art Mix old and new, global and local, and you’ll start to grasp the crux of The Englishman, owned by Brit Tom McCarthy. The main entrance is flagged by bronze sculptures flanking the front door, while a sculpture garden resides in the back. The Englishman has long specialized in art, furniture, and accessories from centuries past, and still stocks the types of treasures first introduced in 1985. Much is displayed as it would have been generations ago, in traditional salon style: together with unrelated art on a wall covered top to bottom with artwork. “Until the 1930s or ‘40s, literally every space on the wall was used to show artwork, with the bette-known artists’ pieces higher 5TH AVENUE SOUTH 33

up,” says gallery manager Amber Jones. Contemporary art joined the lineup a few years ago, and often these pieces are displayed solo. Popular among the living artist offerings are Plein Air scenes of Florida and Maine by local painter Mary Erickson. The gallery also commissions industrial art from a South Florida specialist who transforms artifacts such as airplane parts and propellers into sculptures. From December through the spring, The Englishman hosts monthly artist receptions. Usually, the artist mingles with participants as all enjoy wine and appetizers. One recent reception featured a collection of Belgian Impressionist paintings. An expert from Los Angeles shared his knowledge with the crowd, capping off a uniquely stimulating evening for all. theenglishmanusa.com Native Visions Even with a beach at the end of the road, Naples’ tailored storefronts say urban flair more than they do wildlife. To get a fix of nature’s bounty, step into Native Visions, an ode to African art. Walking through the gallery’s 2,200 square feet, you’ll find modern and traditional paintings, sculptures, bronzes and glass art, each piece honoring animals, landscapes or seascapes. Owners Ross and Kirsten Parker began Native Visions in Boca Raton in 1987, and have since relocated to Naples and Jupiter. Both shops feature a roster of renowned artists whose nature and environmental art

has been featured in museums and books. Raised as a farm kid in the Zimbabwe bush, Parker has encouraged his gallery artists to create not from a distance, but from direct observation. For instance, using hammer and chisel, Zimbabwe native Mopho Gande—known as the Michelangelo of native African sculptors—carves animals from Leadwood, using petrified trees found in the bush. Another favorite of Native Visions, acclaimed artist John Seerey-Lester, prefers to paint from real life experiences. His travels to diverse locations on the African continent has helped him capture the mystical narrative of the land. Parker explains, “I wanted to run a gallery that would bring the plight of Africa to the attention of the world, and I am very blessed to have been given the opportunity.” nativevisions.com

Naples Woman’s Club

GIVES BACK

For 85 years, this philanthropic organization has been giving back to Naples. With a clubhouse in the center of the action, just off 5th Avenue, the Club’s 300 women put on programs for the public that help raise much needed funds to support those in need. Signature events such as the Kitchen Tour (January 16) a tour inside gorgeous kitchens, and tastings from local chefs, help raise funds to support scholarships and grants to social service organizations. The Holiday Artisan Boutique and Party (November 2-3) supports local artisans and generates funds for college scholarships for those pursuing a career in the arts. The Author Talk (March 28) is an intimate gathering with noted authors to hear how their literary works are created. And the always popular Flea Market (April 6) provides bargains for everyone while supporting the charitable work of the club. Their clubhouse is also available to rent for meetings or parties. The Club’s members are busy, hardworking volunteers, and they enjoy the benefits of friendship as well as satisfaction from giving back to those less fortunate. “We are dedicated to working together to enhance the lives of others, but we take time to have fun, too!”, says President Stacy Vermylen. For more information, go to napleswomansclub.org or email info@napleswomansclub.org.
