An artwork often lingers as a cherished vision in a collector’s memory—especially the “one that got away.” Years after encountering a series of expressive paintings by artist Connie Aronson depicting the lopsided buildings and cobblestone streets of a small French town, I tracked the artist down (via the white pages—remember those?!) and called to ask whether she was represented by a gallery. Instead, she invited me to her home and converted barn studio in the Connecticut hills to meet her and see her work. I became a devoted collector of this artist, whose signature style encompassed hand-matting her vibrant paintings with layers of Japanese washi paper and meticulously creating patterned frames with her own designs.

Art collectors can be driven by the thrill of the hunt or by more fundamental factors such as price, media, style, or even the location and availability of the artist or gallery. But often, it is the visual capture that occurs when someone sees a work of art that moves them.

In Palm Beach County, artist studios and artwork are easily accessible and offer collectors the benefit of interacting with the people whose work they acquire.

Christy Potter served as the administrator for the public art program in West Palm Beach in the 1990s, when the program first started. At that time, she had the opportunity to meet many local artists serving on the committee and working in the community. Potter was inspired by the previous owner of her townhome, a major collector who had covered every wall with art.

In building her own collection, Potter likes to do a deep dive into an artist’s work and understand the inspiration behind a particular piece.

One of her favorite works, by artist Terre Rybovich, features the vibrant plumage of a painted bunting, a bird that visits Potter’s yard every year. She also collects three-dimensional works by ceramicist Sara Lerner and the whimsical head sculptures of Maxine Spector. Potter is a fan of the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County’s May Open Studios and looks forward to meeting new artists in their spaces. All of the work she has purchased has a place in her home and holds strong meaning as a representation of the artists, many of whom have become her friends. Several years ago, Potter saw an image of a large painting by Maxine Spector and asked the artist about her references in making the work.

Spector spoke of spirituality and an appreciation of a higher power after visiting churches in her husband’s native Germany and seeing the light pouring through stained-glass windows in the many churches they visited.. That clinched the deal for Potter, who was convinced to acquire the titled Heaven Sings. It is a piece that brings her great joy each time she sees it hanging in her home.

During several visits to Cuba

in recent years, Potter researched local artists and, in some cases, arrived on their doorsteps asking to see their work. Fortunately, the artists graciously welcomed her into their homes.

A multi-hyphenate creative originally from Iran, Hirbod Human has lived in California and Toronto but now calls Palm Beach County home. Human considers himself a patron, and his collecting practice spans earlycareer artists and recent art school graduates, outsider makers, as well as mid-career and long-established figures working across the globe. He notes that a collection is like breadcrumbs, a visual diary of your life. As a writer, filmmaker, and scholarcurator, Human looks closely at the artwork he encounters, valuing time in artist studios and galleries where he can build meaningful relationships with the makers behind the work. His collection reflects this layered approach, including Palm Beach County artists alongside national and international voices.

through shared questions rather than fixed answers.

Ultimately, Human sees collecting as a way to support the community in which you live while contributing to a broader global cultural conversation. A connector deeply embedded in the creative life of Palm Beach County, he delights in introducing artists to new audiences and people to one another, continually fostering community, connection, and dialogue.

Often, artists are avid collectors of other artists’ work. Having trained their brains to actively consider artwork, the process of its creation, the framework employed, and even color or glaze choices, artists have a critical eye for work that speaks to them. West Palm Beach–based artist Eloise Janssen studied archaeology and studio art and merged those disciplines in her sculptural work by reframing waste as an artifact of contemporary life. She collects, deconstructs, and reconfigures cast-off objects— maybe a yogurt cup or a bottle cap—and then displays them as archaeological finds.

While working at the nonprofit organization YoungArts and as a resident of Treefall Studios in the Northwood neighborhood of West Palm Beach, Janssen has encountered many other 10

working artists who challenge each other to learn and grow. Janssen, like other collectors, finds work that speaks to her. Because she studied printmaking, she is often drawn to that medium. Another artist who spoke to her was Andrew Kozlowski because the work, which she discovered at the Small Press Fair in Miami, contains pseudo-artifacts and feels like a faux relic. While she has purchased works directly from artists she wishes to support and, like many, has traded with other artists for her own work, Janssen is also building her collection through local purchases from galleries such as MTN Space in Lake Worth. Her first major artwork purchase from that gallery was by South Florida-born Colombian artist Christina Barrera.

Initially captured by the emotions inspired by a work of art, collectors often begin by appreciating the qualities of an individual piece and proceed to engage the creator.

They are, in fact, collectors of artists.

Photographer HARRY BENSON reflects on his decades-long career and an exhibition of his legendary portraits in Boca Raton

These are but a few of the iconic images taken by Harry Benson, the Scottish-born photographer with a flair for capturing celebrities and politicians in their element—and

some of the most pivotal moments in history. They are also among the shots on display at The Boca Raton resort until August 2026 as part of the exhibition Harry Benson: Royalty, Rebels, and Rockstars, presented by the Sponder Gallery.

“Both my wife, Gigi, and I are very pleased to be represented by the Sponder Gallery,” Benson says.

“The exhibition in Boca Raton is very unique, very different from a regular gallery presentation. It’s more like sitting in a friend’s living room surrounded by favorite photographs of interesting people.”

Benson has had a rollicking career on assignment for magazines that include Life, Time,

Newsweek, Town & Country, Vanity Fair, Paris Match, GQ, W, Esquire, People, Vogue, and Architectural Digest. Frank Sinatra once glared at him because he was in the way when he and Mia Farrow arrived at Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball in 1966. The very next year, Barbra Streisand berated him after he left an assigned area for photographers to get a better picture of her performing. Occasional abuse aside, Benson has always gotten close and gotten the shot.

“I don’t know what I would have done if I had to work for my living,” Benson says. “Because for 60-plus

Germans. Sensing his son’s passion for pictures, Benson’s father enrolled him in the Glasgow School of Art. After graduation, Benson’s first job was as a wedding photographer. “It wasn’t a bad way to learn,” he recalls. “It teaches discipline. There was a certain order that had to be followed: photos of the bride and groom alone, then with their parents, then with the wedding party, followed by the guests and the first dance.”

Then, newspapers beckoned. Benson’s first published photograph was of a young roe deer, and he remembers the

years, I have gotten to do what I love.”

Born in Glasgow in 1929, Benson acknowledges that he wasn’t a good student in “regular school.”

When his father gave him a Coronet Cub box camera one year for Christmas, he found something he really loved doing. He was about 12 years old then, he says, and a big fan of James Cagney movies and Life magazine. War photojournalism was making an impression on him, and he still remembers the front-page picture of a boy crying in front of the ruins of his house, which had just been bombed by the 12

thrill of seeing the man next to him on the bus open the Glasgow Evening Times to his picture. He moved to London, where there were at least seven daily papers at the time, and plenty of pressure to beat the competition on news stories. Working for The Daily Express, Benson took whatever assignment came up, getting as close as he could to the action to get the best shots. He was about to go to Africa on assignment when the night editor called and told him he’d be going to Paris instead, and with The Beatles, to boot.

It was the beginning of Beatlemania, and Benson’s images of the mop-topped quartet came to define the madcap excitement of that time. While in Paris, the band found out that “I Want to Hold Your Hand” went to No. 1 in the United States. John Lennon snuck up behind Paul McCartney and hit him with a hotel pillow.

Ringo Starr and George Harrison joined in. Benson started shooting, and one of the most widely seen and beloved photos in pop culture was born.

“Everything is timing,” Benson says of his approach.

“You have to come in with an idea, and if you can get a person to move, it releases them as soon as you start taking a photograph. Your time is ticking along. You only have so much time no matter who they are. People feel awkward if you don’t give them encouragement

or suggestion, but you need to keep them moving. I am always looking for unexpected surprises. You have to be prepared for those.”

One unexpected surprise: his wife, Gigi, whom he met almost 60 years ago while covering Prince Philip at a Houston charity event. By then Benson had moved to New York, because it had been his dream to live in America. Gigi, then a graduate student at the University of Texas, was at the event with her parents. She says that the moment Harry stepped into the elevator, she looked at her mother, “because he was really cute.”

Two years later (“but it feels like it was two weeks,” Gigi says), Harry and Gigi married. They had two daughters together, Wendy Benson Landes, an actress, and Tessa Benson Tooley, a film producer

and animal rights advocate. Now Gigi helps Benson with his files, copywriting, and paperwork, which, she says, “is quite a lot to do” because of the sheer volume of pictures he has taken.

“She’s my wife who does all the work,” Benson says playfully.

Not that Benson has had much idle time.

He has photographed royalty, politicians, cultural icons, and major historical moments.

He chronicled the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He was there when Bobby Kennedy was shot, capturing the ensuing chaos.

“He was looking at me and he was dying,” Benson recalls. “The Kennedy people asked me how I could do this. But I did this, and I had done it before.

I was getting punched in the side of the head, but I wasn’t going to walk away from a hellish situation.

I’ve been in other situations where people tried to get my film off me. And I told myself I didn’t go 2,000 miles to get my film taken off me.”

He was also there when President Richard Nixon resigned, documenting his disgrace and his wife’s tears.

“Nixon was inherently shy, but he was always considerate and would make room in the plane for me on important presidential trips, including the ones to Russia, Egypt, and Israel,” Benson says.

“Mrs. Nixon was very kind, and the staff loved her. She never forgot a birthday or to ask someone who had been ill how they were feeling.”

In 1976, Benson went to Dolly Parton’s home in Nashville to photograph her. She was finishing her makeup, when Benson realized he had his shot. He told Dolly to keep doing what she was doing, and though the lights weren’t set up yet, Benson says the image of her in front of a window, leaning toward the mirror and putting on lipstick, was his favorite from that session.

There is no mistaking her silhouette for anyone else’s.

Benson cautions that you can’t get too friendly with the people you cover, because they’ll start ignoring what you want them to do, or telling you what they’d like to do instead. That is a recipe for disaster, he says.

“Someone says they want to meet you for dinner or breakfast or a drink. You think you’re getting to know them, but in reality, they’re getting to know you and how you can be manipulated.”

Yet it’s clear that there are subjects like the Nixons, for example, for whom he has some affection, no matter how businesslike he is or how quickly he gets

down to work. He has had to be competitive over his long career, but there are countless anecdotes about people—like the actress Sharon Stone—who have been absolutely charmed by him. After Benson spoke with Queen Elizabeth II about his love of dogs (he and Gigi have two: Daisy, a pug, and Tillie, a dachshund), Her Royal Highness let him play with her corgis. For all his tough talk, he has a tender heart, one with an eye toward connecting, building trust, and finding a common humanity.

“The most important thing is to know when to move in close,” he says. “Don’t hang back like a baby. Get in there and get the best, clearest picture because that’s why you were sent. You do it because you realize if you miss the opportunity, you’re going to be up against some embarrassment. Maybe the person doesn’t want to be photographed, or maybe they don’t want to be photographed in a certain situation. But I’m getting paid to get close.” ‡ YOUR COLLECTING JOURNEY BEGINS HERE

The Collision of AI and Art

acting, writing, painting, sculpting, or photography.

They want to challenge the viewer—ask questions, not give answers—and try to make sense of the world in their own original way.

Artists crochet, sculpt, photograph, paint, write, weave, and more— fabricating objects they once only envisioned in thoughts and dreams. In short, they are analog creators. But as their work comes to fruition, they each use specific tools to achieve their vision. For some, artificial intelligence (AI) has become another tool in the creative process.

The artists featured here do not seem particularly concerned about the influence of AI on their work. What they are interested in is their niche, and what they exude is that peculiar intensity to double down on what they do, be it 16

Corey Lamb Like many artists working today, Corey Lamb (an associate professor at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton) has discovered images of his paintings in online databases scraped from the internet. Still, he remains confident that his physical paintings and others’ can captivate viewers in ways that AI-generated work cannot.

While Lamb acknowledges that many people, including artists, must consider how AI might affect their careers, he primarily sees AI as a malleable tool that, if used effectively, favors the clever. He has created an exercise for his graduate professional development seminar in which he challenges students to create both a persona and a career for an imaginary artist in one week. Using AI to generate images and create social media helps the students realize just how hard it is to get visibility online—and harder still to create something new that will garner

attention. Perhaps their personal creations, those objects that bare their souls, may be what sets them apart. coreylamb.com

Serge Strosberg In his recent series of paintings, Serge Strosberg places famed architect Addison Mizner’s pet monkey, Johnnie Brown, on tennis courts, golf courses, beaches, and iconic Palm Beach landmarks. Strosberg finds AI to be a useful tool to push his pace of production and generate hundreds of images, a few of which might serve as jumping-off points for his paintings. He imbues his oil paintings with life and soul through his expressionist style.

Over time, he has found that, based on his prompts, the technology is better able to create images that are more appropriate to his vision. Strosberg believes it is wrong to see AI as an enemy. Rather, it is just another tool that people should try to use intelligently to push themselves to create something more interesting. reimaginingpalmbeach.com

Sea Change Collective Theater is a communal art experience that requires performers and audiences to interact.

For that reason alone, each performance is unique. The installation and performance artist, actor, and writer Autumn Kioti Horne considers the use of AI to be outsourcing an artist’s creativity. They note that with writing there is no object to point to (unless the writer is using a typewriter), and they are concerned about having work scraped from the internet. Kioti Horne acknowledges that nothing is original in art and considers living, researching, and absorbing other forms of art to be their best sources for inspiration and creation. Their partner in the group Sea Change Collective, Suzanne Ankrum Harris (a 2024 Cultural Council Artist Innovation Fellow), similarly references reading poetry, engaging with others, and the experiences of daily life as source material that they will often incorporate into the physical theater performances they create. seachangecollectivetheatre.org

Kelvin Small III Kelvin Small III (a recipient of the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County’s Emerging Artist Prize) is a photographer who exclusively works with large-format film cameras and puts a great deal of time into the production of his prints. He

In many ways, Angelo Caruso is a digital artist.

His 2024 work Traverse is generated from more than 200 AI stills stitched together to form a video that zooms endlessly into a multitude of landscapes. Caruso composed and performed the music, which takes the viewer through these landscapes. He also created a tactile rendering of both the music and video landscapes that gives viewers (especially those who are sight impaired) an opportunity to experience this AI-supported work in a way that is definitively analog. createbuildconnect. com Each artist brought up something that concerns them about the impact of AI on the world. Lamb is worried about gatekeeping and the limitations to access that 18

are likely to occur as more powerful systems are hidden behind paywalls. He argues that AI needs to remain open-source and available to everyone.

Both Kioti Horne and Ankrum Harris have serious concerns about the environmental impacts of large data centers and their increased power demand and carbon emissions. The performers also recognize that there is concern among film and television actors that their voice or likeness may be used and that current legal protection is insufficient.

Everyone expressed a concern about blind spots in our knowledge and understanding of AI technology and its many potential uses. For now, it seems they primarily remain hopeful that they can opt in to use it in positive ways and expand their own practices.

talks about getting his hands dirty and feeling the object. He is not concerned with his images being scraped or manipulated via AI because he feels that, even as an emerging artist, he has begun to establish his own visual language. Similarly, he documents his work and creates limited editions of his prints. He notes that if a work is not signed or there is no edition then it’s not real.
