The aesthetic industry has expanded very rapidly, leading to exaggerated marketing, confusion, poor results, and fears of looking “fake” among patients who want to enhance or rejuvenate their appearance. However, it is possible to get high-quality and natural results by avoiding the gimmicks, learning about the procedures, and carefully choosing the proper providers. This monthly series focuses on providing helpful information about the various aspects and procedures of facial aesthetics.
SKIN CHANGES
• Skin is the most challenging to treat as it typically requires various modalities, multiple treatments, prevention, and maintenance. Most focus on stimulating the skin to heal itself.
3 MAIN AREAS OF FACIAL AGING
•
• There are too many treatments to list. You should choose based what aspect is being treated, amount of expected improvement, # of sessions / commitment, downtime, and risk.
• Ablative Lasers: (ie CO2, Erbium) Remove the top layer of skin, results after 1 session, but more downtime.
• Non-Ablative Lasers (ie Fraxel, Moxi, IPL, BBL) Stimulate deeper skin layers, usually minimal to no downtime but require multiple sessions. Target various aspects depending on the laser.
VOLUME LOSS LAXITY
• Facelift: This King of laxity procedures focuses on lifting the cheeks, jowls, jawline, and neck. The deep layers of the face are suspended back to their more youthful positions. Careful modern day techniques, especially with deep plane facelifts, allow us to give naturally rejuvenated results without the classic “facelift-look”.
• Microneedling: Create tiny holes to stimulate rejuvenation. Allow topical application of rejuvenating medications and growth factors. Results and downtime depend on the device, how it’s used, and what is applied topically.
• Biostimulators: (ie hyperdilute Radiesse) Injected under the skin to add thickness and stimulate collagen. Minimal to no downtime.
• Fat Grafting: Your own fat cells provide a great option for volume replacement. Those that survive the initial transfer will survive for many years (but are also subject to the aging process). They provide a secondary stem cell effect. Unless someone is very skinny, they are plentiful in supply. The down-side is they require a small procedure, which involves harvesting from another area and more swelling / downtime. They are not simply dissolvable in case of unwanted results. We also cannot be sure how many will survive.
• Filler: These have gained a poor reputation due to improper use and abuse, but can be great when used properly. Two main advantages are variability and convenience. With so many different fillers, we can choose the ones with properties that favor a particular area or purpose. No harvesting required, can be done quickly in the office, simply open a package and inject. Downside is they are not permanent, but some can spread and expand. They must be used wisely.
• Browlift: Often added on to facelifts in order to restore the natural position of the eyebrows. Can be done to address the lateral (outer part) only, or the entire brow. Also a feared procedure for the “surprised-look”, but can do wonders when executed properly.
• Biostimulators: Sculptra and Radiesse are fillers that the body replaces with collagen. Thus they stimulate the body to fill the area with collagen. They provide more volume than fillers and can last longer, but are not dissolvable and can interfere with future surgeries.
• Lip Lift: The top lip is the main point of aging in the central face, but often overlooked. A lip lift restores the lip length, shape, fullness, and tooth show.
• Upper Eyelid Surgery: The upper lids are usually subject to excess skin, which can be removed. It’s important to preserve the middle fat and suspend the brow fat pad.
• Lower Eyelid Surgery: This one is highly variable depending on the patient.
• Necklift: Usually incorporated with a facelift, but can be a standalone procedure. The platysma muscle is tightened and extra skin is removed.

BLOCK AND ROLL

For a guy who’s known as a “brick wall,” you’d think Sergei Bobrovsky— star goalie for the Florida Panthers—would be an intimidating figure both on and off the ice.
But “Bob” (as he’s affectionately dubbed) is an affable, even funny guy who just happens to be one of the top goalies of all time. Don’t miss my exclusive interview and photo shoot with the Stanley Cup champ.
I didn’t get to strap on my childhood skates at our photo shoot of Miami’s Vice City Rollers at their home rink in Kendall. But spending time with this dynamic team brought back the old rink rat vibes (neon lights included) from my own roller-skating days.
P YING TO WIN
It’s a new year, and with it comes a new issue of Aventura magazine. To kick things off this month, we’re paying homage to Miami’s love of sports with a look at local folks changing the game right here in our hometown.
If you’re still basking in the glow of the Florida Panthers’ first-ever Stanley Cup win just six months ago, you’re not alone. But goalie Sergei Bobrovsky isn’t thinking about it too much these days. For Bobrovsky, it’s all about letting go of the past (whether it holds a big miss, a viral save, or even a Stanley Cup win). Instead, he says, he’s all about staying in the moment. The time to look back and take stock of his Hall-of-Fame-worthy career? Bobrovsky reckons that’ll come after he retires—another thing that’s far from his thoughts right now. Don’t miss my in-depth interview with the two-time Vezina Trophy–winning goalie in “The Puck Stops Here,” starting on page 54. When the skaters of Miami’s Vice City Rollers line up against you at a roller derby match, you’d better get ready to rumble for real. However, it’s not just the battle on the track that these unconventional athletes have had to fight. Turn to page 62 for Jess Swanson’s inside look at a sport that was nearly wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic—and how Miami’s home team is partnering with their biggest rival in Fort Lauderdale to keep things rolling at rinks across South Florida.
With the new year we debut two new monthly departments in Aventura magazine. Up front in our Aventurist section, don’t miss “Scouted,” where Erin Michelle Newberg brings you her curated picks for the best Magic City spots to shop, sip, spa, and more (page 26). Or turn to our award-winning Sip & Savor section for “Pour Decisions” (page 91). Each month, self-described “wine obsessive” Sarah Phillips McCartan offers her thoughts on what’s new in the world of wine—and what bottles to buy now.
Make sure to start 2025 on the right foot by following us on Instagram (@aventuramagazine) and subscribing to our weekly Insider’s Guide newsletter (aventuramagazine.com) for the straight-to-your-inbox skinny on what’s happening across the 305 each week.

THE INSIDE TRACK TO ALL THINGS NEW AND NOW IN MIAMI-DADE
Lionel Messi is the superhero Miami needs right now (or at least a tiny plastic version of his likeness, clad in a pink and black super suit that pays homage to Inter Miami CF). As if being the recipient of a recordsetting eight Ballon d’Or awards as the world’s top male soccer player wasn’t enough, Messi has now been transformed into a posable toy named Captain Messi in partnership with the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. (TURN THE PAGE FOR MORE.) « SPORTS SCENE

The limited-edition mini-Messis come with any order from the Hard Rock Café’s kids’ menu (ranging from grilled chicken salad and fresh fruit to fried chicken tenders to new pizza offerings). Or pick one up at the Rock Shop, where they’re displayed alongside an accompanying line of Captain Messi merch including lunch boxes, water bottles, backpacks, apparel, and more.
“My kids and I love watching superhero movies together, so it was really special to work with Hard Rock to create Captain Messi,” Messi said in a statement. “I hope it helps inspire young fans and families to work hard and believe in themselves to do great things.” (shop.hardrock.com/featured/ messi-collection) —Kristen Desmond LeFevre --Kristen –Kristen Desmond LeFevre
SLAM-DUNK Scents
Each of the 30 teams in the National Basketball Assocation (NBA)—including our beloved Miami Heat—has its own set of identifiers that fans can rally around, from colors to mascots to logos and more. But thanks to Miami-based Aroma360 , each team now has its own signature scent. Case in point: Heat Elite (honoring Miami’s home team) boasts notes of Italian mandarin, peach blossom, and patchouli. Emerald Essence (created for major Heat rival the Boston Celtics) smells of clam chowder. Okay, we take it back: Beantown’s team scent includes Valencia orange, cyclamen, and jasmine. The company recently celebrated the launch of its exclusive NBA Collection—which includes diffusers for rooms and cars, essential oil–based scents, and candles—at its Miami showroom in Wynwood. The event
kicked off a nationwide tour of the new line at all Aroma360 retail locations in cities with NBA teams. The star-studded affair included guests like The Real Housewives of Miami’s Larsa Pippen, Academy Award–winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr., the Miami Heat’s own DJ Irie, and Burnie, the Heat’s iconic mascot. Keeping it Above BOARD
It’s a new year and an all-new look inside the Kaseya Center—at least, that is, if you look up. To celebrate the Miami Heat’s twenty-fifth anniversary this season, the venue has unveiled a high-tech, one-of-a-kind scoreboard (and it even has a name). Fireball , as the centerpiece of the stadium is now known, boasts a larger-than-life, threedimensional replica of the Miami Heat’s ball-and-flame logo covered in 2,525
square feet of LED screens that can display a single image or multiple images at the same time. Beyond the screens that cover the logo itself, four large video monitors, two 360-degree upper ring displays, and four underbelly displays create a “ring of fire” for a total of 11,000 square feet of digital space. That’s a 585 percent increase over the
previous system, ensuring that Heat fans can see every detail of the team’s smooth moves, whether you’re seated courtside or relegated to the nosebleeds. (kaseyacenter.com) —Jesse Scott

Fast-forward three years, and the shop is still going strong. Each garment (many still hand-painted by Wolkoweiz herself) is unique and locally made. AN UNLIKELY MOSAIC OF ISLAND-STUDDED FLOODPLAINS, DENSE WOODLANDS, AND SPRAWLING GRASSLANDS, BOTSWANA’S OKAVANGO DELTA HOLDS THE SECRET RECIPE FOR EXTREME WILDLIFE PROSPERITY. WITHIN THIS NATURAL SPLENDOR, DISCOVER TWO NEWER ULTRA-LUXE CAMPS AT THE TOP OF THE DELTA FOOD CHAIN.
BY PAUL RUBIO
TAWANA
In May 2024, conservation-driven outfitter Natural Selection unveiled its most inspiring safari camp to date: Tawana. Nestled in an untouched part of the Okavango Delta along the wildlife-rich Gomoti River in the Moremi Game Reserve, Tawana represents untamed Africa at its purest—with robust populations of predators, prey, and rare species, and zero human presence. This extraordinary camp results from a partner-
ship with Chief Tawana Moremi, the paramount leader of the Batawana tribe, who granted Natural Selection exclusive rights to build and explore an extensive swathe of Moremi’s ancestral land, uninhabited since 1963.
Tawana’s eight mega-suites upend conventional notions of safari luxury. Each comprises a series of thatched huts that flow seamlessly into the separate bedroom, bathroom, and lounge areas. Spaciously arranged for privacy, the suites feature contem-

porary African furnishings and are bathed in natural light through expansive screen windows. The wooden decks—complete with a plunge pool, daybed, and shower—are perfect for game viewing. Thoughtfully designed, multilevel communal areas weave through the landscape, with centuries-old ebony trees offering nooks from which to observe the wildlife action. Viewing platforms tricked out with plush couches and swing chairs promise endless entertainment as Planet Earth episodes play in real time.
Throughout the year, the floodplain grasslands teem with wildlife, making the animal encounters nothing short of epic. During my recent visit, early morning game drives and evening safaris paid off, fulfilling a lifelong dream of spotting multiple aardwolves and aardvarks in one panorama. I saturated my camera’s memory card with shots of playful lion cubs while witnessing both cheetah and lion hunts from start to finish, thanks to our knowledgeable and engaging guide, Rio. Back at camp, we shifted to observing hippos, baboons, and antelope navigating the shallow channels, as elephants communed nearby—often finding their way directly into camp.
Tawana’s exceptional design and location are matched by its service and cuisine. We enjoyed meals in various settings—from the open-air dining area and the 16-meter lap pool to the private comfort of our suite—each one a feast of flavorful continental and African dishes. Attentive waitstaff ensured our wine glasses were never empty and guided us to sample an array of varietals from the sleek on-site wine cellar.
In total, Tawana is more than just a safari; it’s an unparalleled immersion into Africa’s wild heart, where every moment, from exhilarating encounters to serene pauses, redefines both adventure and the privilege of true wilderness. (naturalselection.travel)
At Tawana, watch the drama unfold from your expansive outdoor terrace and look forward to cheetah sightings, a common occurrence in this region of the Moremi Game Reserve.
Tawana delivers untamed wilderness at its best. Indulge in the hyper-comfy digs for rest between the action.
XIGERA SAFARI LODGE
Everyone knows it, but few dare to admit it: back-to-back game drives can start to feel repetitive—even a bit exhausting—especially for the more casual wildlife enthusiast. By the tenth drive, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” is far from the tune on your mind. But Africa’s top-tier lodges are reimagining the safari experience, adding new dimensions to enhance the wildlife focus. Nowhere is this more evident than at Xigera, an art-centered lodge in the western Moremi Game Reserve, where game drives share the spotlight with captivating art installations and creative touches that enliven each day’s adventures.
A legacy project by the Tollman family— the renowned South African hoteliers behind the Red Carnation Hotel Collection—Xigera unfolds as a living gallery in the bush. Open since late 2020, the lodge is home to one of the largest private collections of Southern
African art, including more than 30 bespoke pieces by emerging African artists like Adam Birch, Madoda Fani, and Otto du Plessis.
Each of Xigera’s 12 eclectic suites is a masterpiece, featuring handmade furnishings and unique collectibles throughout. Curious about the artwork in neighboring suites? The coffee-table book on your one-of-a-kind credenza reveals the stories behind each piece and encourages guests to explore Xigera’s grounds in search of installations, such as Porky Hefer’s human-size woven lounge nests at the property’s edge and Conrad Hicks’ bomainspired fire pit, a hand-beaten copper lily that symbolizes Xigera’s spirit.
Decadence in the details extends to the lodge’s amenities and cuisine, with rare safari comforts like a full-service spa, a fitness center, and globally influenced dishes presented at a Michelin-star level. Each meal is a vibrant showcase of flavors, setting a high standard
Grab a seat around the colorful, circular couch to admire Conrad Hicks’ boma-inspired copper fire pit, fine wine in hand.
At Xigera, collectible art and oneof-a-kind furnishings abound behind the exteriors of a swish safari setup.
even in Africa’s most exclusive safari circuit. With such excess, it’s almost easy to forget the primary reason for visiting Xigera: the wildlife. Situated in prime Okavango real estate, the camp reveals sublime sightings of elephants, lions, giraffes, and more without guests ever needing to leave the grounds.
On my safari, one day’s drive was nearly delayed by elephants determined to block the walkway, while an entire pride of lions—cubs included—took refuge beneath one of the stilted suites. Set beside a permanent floodplain, Xigera also provides the best of the Delta’s water-based beauty. Beyond traditional game drives, guests can take to the water by motorboat or mokoro (canoe) and even savor sunset cocktails along the water’s edge.
To be sure, there are fabulous rewards for tak-
ing actual game drives. In addition to wildlife spotting and photo-snapping, look forward to adrenaline-inducing rides around and through surrounding channels, following herds of red lechwe while waiting for the cries and calls of African painted dogs (also known as African hunting dogs or wild dogs) on the prowl.
In the end, Xigera surfaces as a vivid blend of art, nature, and luxury, where every corner invites discovery and each experience presents a new perspective on the Okavango’s wild and creative spirit. (xigera.com) «

WELLNESS WEEKEND
BY KRISTEN DESMOND LEFEVRE
Some weekend getaways are meant for debauchery—cheat-day foods, an it’s-5-o’clock-somewhere attitude toward alcohol, and poolside naps. But others are about restoring mind, body, and soul. A visit to Singer Island’s Amrit Ocean Resort falls into the second category. Meaning “elixir of life” in Sanskrit, Amrit merges Eastern holistic practices with Western levels of luxury, offering guests a stay inspired by the resort’s five pillars of wellness: mindfulness, nutrition, fitness, relaxation, and sleep.
Nowhere are those pillars more prevalent than inside the four-story, 103,000-squarefoot Amrit Wellness & Spa. There, a team of coaches, aestheticians, and practitioners stands ready to curate your wellness road map. Want to jump-start your fitness journey? Amrit’s Personal Wellness Support System provides coaching before, during, and after
your stay when you book a three- or fivenight all-inclusive wellness package. Need to zero in on mindfulness and meditation? Daily restorative classes include mat Pilates, a variety of yoga practices, and more in indoor studios or on outdoor terraces overlooking Amrit’s pristine shoreline. Feel like you need a fresh start but don’t know where to start? By employing integrated health assessments— from the personal wellness guide focused on the five pillars, to a nutrition assessment by a registered dietitian, to the InBody evaluation measuring your balance of muscle and fat mass, to an Ayurvedic assessment that focuses on pariksha (pulse examination) and marma point evaluation—Amrit’s experts can help put you on the right path. Between treatments, take part in the Aayush Hydrothermal Experience. Named for the Sanskrit word for “longevity,” this circuit includes a lap pool to increase heart rate, a Kneipp Hydrotherapy Walk to stimulate nerve centers, a whirlpool to relax muscles and release toxins, and a cold plunge to reduce inflammation, plus an effusion shower, a salt-inhalation chamber, a sauna, and a steam room. Use these components individually or
combine them in a series of 70- to 100-minute self-guided rituals for a full-body hydrotherapy experience. Amrit doesn’t skip the more traditional pampering, either. Home to one of the few hammams in South Florida, the facility offers body treatments that blend time-honored Moroccan bathing traditions with modern technology. The Amrit Signature Body Experience (a series of exfoliating, smoothing, and hydrating steps that include a body wrap, foot and scalp treatments, and a massage) will leave you feeling brand new. For facial rejuvenation, look no further than Amrit’s MediSpa Facial for a youthenhancing combination of oxygen infusion, radio frequency, microcurrent skin tightening, and a hydra-dermabrasion aqua peel.
When it’s time to refuel, Amrit boasts a number of wellness-inspired dining concepts, including Tula (the resort’s vegetableforward signature restaurant) and Taaza (a beachside eatery featuring fare from woodburning ovens). Perhaps most exciting is Ayre—a so-called “mood-food gastronomy” spot developed in partnership with nutritional psychiatrist Dr. Uma Naidoo, who crafted a menu full of ingredients that have been scientifically shown to elevate mood. No matter which of the pillars you rest upon while at Amrit, your experience is more than a stay. It’s a sanctuary. You’ll check out and return home as a new (or at least renewed) you in mind, body, and spirit. (amritocean.com) «

SOUTHERN SOPHISTICATION
A WELL-APPOINTED HAVEN IN THE HILLS OF NORTHWEST GEORGIA MAKES FOR A HOSPITABLE RETREAT
BY JANE E. ENOS
Nestled about 60 miles from Atlanta lies a spot for both recreation and respite named Barnsley Resort. Technically, this sanctuary’s location in the Peach State is Adairsville, though there’s little evidence of this quaint municipality within miles of the resort. That’s all the better for most who choose to visit, as they’re likely craving a hearty helping of Southern-style seclusion without sacrificing top-notch cuisine, a bevy of activities, and of course, the cordiality the region offers in abundance.
The resort has a noteworthy history. It sits upon the remains of a 1840s-constructed estate and gardens, known as Woodlands, conceived by Godfrey Barnsley. He emigrated from England and—in due time—established himself as one of the South’s most
affluent individuals from his lucrative dealings in the shipping and cotton industries. Godfrey commissioned an Italianate manse on the grounds for his wife, Julia, who died before the building’s completion. As legend goes, he sensed her spirit at the property and felt compelled to finish construction. Today, the mansion’s remnants and kempt gardens are nearby the resort’s accommodations and open for guests to explore, enjoy, and use as event space.
Speaking of accommodations, Barnsley’s are a real differentiator for the resort. All rooms help situate guests within the natural
beauty the area showcases; however, its 39 freestanding cottages truly provide unique and enchanting retreats. These recently underwent significant remodeling that both refreshed and reimagined while maintaining a welcoming, time-honored aesthetic. Cottage facades embrace a nature-inspired palette, while interior features combine bold patterns with muted details and incorporate tones befitting the resort’s heritage. Nearly every comfort has been considered, yet there’s an air of rusticity that signals one is a far piece from big-city frenzy. Expect
Clockwise from left: a cozy firepit in front of Barnsley Resort’s main building (known as the inn); horseback riding offers many encounters with Georgia wildlife; the interior of one of the 39 recently renovated freestanding cottages.
to see swings on front porches, a blend of antique-style and contemporary elements, metal (instead of plastic) keys that lock and unlock doors, and wood-burning fireplaces that staff will gladly light for you nightly.
Another thing that sets Barnsley apart is the wide range of activities. If you’re a golfer, the beautiful and immaculately maintained Jim Fazio–designed course should suit. This scenic par-72 track capitalizes on the region’s rolling hills and is known for its slick greens and challenging par-threes.
Another outdoor highlight is Barnsley’s Beretta Shooting Grounds by High Adventure Company, located about 10 minutes from the resort. Affording both hunting and sport shooting opportunities, this 1,800-acre complex features a five-stand station for group and introductory shooting experiences, two new 15-station sporting clay courses, and a recently created area for Helice, a sport originating in Italy that involves targets that spin quickly and erratically. Should you want to experience Georgia’s outdoors in al-
ternative ways, despair not. Fishing, canoeing, 10 miles of hiking trails, guided horseback rides, and tours by utility terrain vehicle are additional options. Also available are six lighted pickleball courts and a nine-hole disc golf course.
If relaxation is preferred, it can be found in myriad spots around the resort, from the front porch of your cottage to the main building’s parlor-like lobby to the Adirondack chairs surrounding firepits upon lush, verdant grounds. A great place to start (or round out) a day is at Barnsley’s boutique spa, where you can indulge in a facial, massage, body treatment, or reflexology.
All the happenings at the resort will likely leave you hankering for a mess of something tasty. For this, head to Woodlands Grill, the resort’s main dining location that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Don’t miss the pimento cheese beignets, braised beef short rib, and buttermilk fried
chicken, a culinary staple of the region. Next to the grill is Dugan’s Bar, a perfect spot for grabbing a cocktail (as well as a smash burger) that simultaneously delivers panoramic views of the golf course. And the Biergarten—a stone’s throw away from the resort’s main building—should not be overlooked either. This recently renovated venue features an alfresco environment with a newly added covered pavilion and bar, as well as regional and European brews and barbecue prepared by the resort’s resident pitmaster.
If you’re seeking a getaway predicated on comfortable elegance, where life feels a little slower and R & R are almost certain, Barnsley should check all boxes. Don’t sleep on this stately Southern escape. (barnsleyresort.com) «

ASTON MARTIN’S NEW DB12 VOLANTE MIGHT JUST BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CAR IN
BY HOWARD WALKER
There are certain impossibilities in life. Like, resisting a second spoonful of Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey ice cream. Or overcoming the urge to pop bubble wrap. Or limiting yourself to just one Instagram Reel of tumbling kittens. Then there’s the impossibility that comes with piloting a new Aston Martin DB12 Volante. In this case, it’s stepping out, walking away, and fighting the overwhelming need to look back and drink in this piece of automotive art.
Just gaze at the thing. Michelangelo couldn’t have done a better job sculpting those rear fenders. Then there’s the grille. If the English poet William Wordsworth were still around, he would have penned sonnets about this purposeful pout, with its instantly recognizable
THE WORLD
outline. It’s a shape guaranteed to leave any sports car lover shaken and stirred.
While the sibling DB12 coupe is a thing of equal beauty, chopping the top to create this latest convertible Volante heightens the visual excitement. It conjures dreamy images of cruising the Côte d’Azur’s Grande Corniche and heading to Monaco for lunch. The most beautiful car in the world? It’s certainly a contender.
Evolved from the previous DB11, this new 12 has a multitude of key improvements. The biggest, perhaps, is the significant power hike for the carryover Mercedes AMG–sourced twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. Whereas the previous
version cranked out a nontrivial 503 hp, bigger turbos and better cooling see a leap to 671. Pedal to the metal will send the Aston lunging from standstill to 60 mph in a mere 3.6 seconds. Top speed? You’re looking at 202 mph. Yet my favorite performance number is 16. That’s the time in seconds it takes for that tightfitting, eight-layer cloth top to unlatch and glide into a deep well behind the rear seats. It can power down or up at speeds of up to 31 mph, in case you get caught in a shower.
Slide behind that thick, flat-bottomed wheel into the nicely bolstered driver’s seat and it feels like descending into a La-Z-Boy. Everything in the cabin feels hyper-expensive, from the diamond-quilted and -perforated leather, to the stitching on the dash, to the polished metal for the delicate slivers of trim.
For this new DB12, Aston engineers jettisoned the previous Mercedes-sourced infotainment system for an in-house creation. It’s good but not great, forcing the driver to wade through multiple distracting layers of menus to operate functions. And unless you have 20/20 vision, you’ll loathe the too-small touch screen and instrument display fonts.
Another source of mind-bending irritation is the speed limit warning bongs. You can turn it off by delving into the touch screen menus, but it reactivates every time you restart the car. Same with the lane-departure warning.
Sounds aside, to drive this new drop-top DB is to absolutely love it—from the throaty whooomph that comes with every press of the

Play with the quick-shifting 8-speed automatic via those elephant-ear paddle shifters or let it take care of business itself. Either way, progress along a twisty backroad is swift, athletic, and agile. Thank the 590 lb-ft of torque, the car’s I-beam-stiff bonded-aluminum

While this new DB12 Volante looks and drives like a million bucks, you’ll pay from $268,400 for the pleasure of ownership. But you should also factor in a multitude of irresistible options from Aston’s Q bespoke division.
As for looking back and gazing at this rolling sculpture of an automobile every time you extract yourself from the cockpit? Priceless. «

THE BRAND-NEW ARKUP 50 IS A SOLAR-POWERED FLOATING HOME THAT CAN TAKE YOU PLACES
BY HOWARD WALKER
Don’t call it a houseboat. This is an Arkup 50 livable yacht. Yes, it has two roomy bedrooms, two en-suite bathrooms, and a rooftop terrace as big as Kansas. But it can also up-anchor and cruise the inland waterways under its own zero-emission, solar-electric power.
Yet what really sets it apart are its spud poles. Excuse me, spud what? These hefty steel tubes are hidden out of sight in the four corners of the Arkup. At the press of a button, they descend to the seabed, then elevate the yacht so that it sits out of the water, away from those pesky waves or swell. The poles extend 17 feet, so in 10 feet of water, for example, they
can levitate the Arkup up to 7 feet above sea level. On a grander scale, it’s the same design used for offshore oil rigs.
The catamaran-hulled yacht is completely self-sustained, courtesy of its 75-kWh bank of lithium-ion batteries juiced by a full-length, top-deck roof frame that holds 30 12-kW solar panels. The batteries power everything, from the air-conditioning to the induction cooktop and electric grill to the washer and dryer, lighting, and televisions. Most importantly, they deliver ample amps to power the yacht’s 80-hp electric propulsion system—indefinitely.
How come? On a sunny day, the solar system can generate enough electricity to push
the Arkup at its 5-knot cruising speed without draining the batteries. Need to speed up to punch against that incoming tide? Top speed is 8.5 knots. What happens when the sun goes down? There’s a back-up diesel generator.
Miami-based Arkup has been around since 2016, founded by French engineers Arnaud Luguet and Nicolas Derouin. Their first “livable yacht” was the massive Arkup 75, which started at $5 million. If you’ve ever driven along cruise ship alley in Miami, you’ll have seen it parked outside a home on ritzy Star Island.
“Its uses are infinite,” says Jared Pearlman, Arkup’s business development manager. “While we see it being used primarily as an
extension of a waterfront home, it could also be a guest apartment, an office, a luxury rental, or a weekend retreat.”
The new 50 on tour at the recent Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show was configured with a two-bed, two-bath layout, though Arkup can design it as a one-bedroom with one bath or an open-plan studio. What comes standard, however, is 660 square feet of living space under air-conditioning on the lower level and an-
other 660 square feet on the top deck. Opt for the power-deploying wraparound side decks and the 50’s total square footage soars to 2,200.
The beauty of these side decks is that they provide water-level space for reclining on a sun lounger or tying a tender alongside. And, as Pearlman points out, with the decks raised and positioned flush against the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass windows, they seal the yacht “like a turtle in its shell.” That gives peace of mind in a storm or just anytime you need to lock and leave.
As for that roof deck, it is truly vast and perfect for outdoor entertaining, movie watching, dining, or lounging. Arkup can even install a

hot tub. This is also where the helm station is located (the 50 can be maneuvered using the 180-degree steerable stern propeller, together with the forward bow thruster).
As a floating villa without the all-important spud poles and fold-down terraces, an Arkup 50 will set you back around $900,000. Add those items plus a few other luxuries and you’re looking at close to $1.6 million. Delivery is via a couple of 18-wheelers from the company’s manufacturing facility in Bedford, Indiana.
No, you won’t be crossing any oceans in an Arkup and you’ll want to avoid big winds and waves. But as a luxury pied-a-l’eau, it’s a terrific concept. «
The PUCK STOPS HERE
Legendary Florida Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky is making his stand—alone in the crease, apart from the rest. He’s the last line of defense, a figurative brick wall blocking what every opponent wants most. The way Bobrovsky sees it, every puck is a threat, every puck carrier a menace. If your dream is to make goals, he is your dream killer. And that’s just the way he likes it.

From his post at the far end of the ice, Sergei Bobrovsky stands at 6 feet, 5 inches tall, towering above the hockey net’s crossbar. (Barefoot, he’s 6 feet, 2 inches tall; the skates only enhance his natural height.)
I think I’m going to appreciate it all—the big wins, the big saves, the big awards—a lot more when I finish my career. When I look back, those moments are going to melt my heart.”
Spot him off-ice at a media interview or prepping in the locker room and he’s a big guy, sure. But when he’s decked out in the full goalie gear—a hulking pair of three-piece leg pads, a chest guard, armored pants, a neck protector, plus a catching glove and a massive blocker glove—he’s got the imposing bulk of a gladiator about to do battle.
And then there’s the iconic helmet and mask. Propped casually atop his head, it’s an airbrushed spectacle repping the Panthers’ team colors and Florida-centric symbols. But as he methodically drops it into place and fastens the chin strap, it feels like a door has closed to a world only he inhabits. When Bobrovsky is covered from head to toe in his goalkeeper glory, it’s hard for anyone else to tell exactly what he is thinking (or where he’s focusing) in any given moment.
To say that it’s an intimidating look is an understatement. But as you watch the 36-yearold Russian goalie and star of the 2024 Stanley Cup–winning Florida Panthers begin his warmup routine, you begin to see the ballet inherent in his battle prep. Alone on the ice, he circles the rink, testing the edges of his skates as he cuts them into the frozen surface—first one foot,
then the other—for a lap or two. He makes a series of half circles, balancing on his right skate as he leans one way and then on his left skate to lean in the opposite direction. He repeats the pattern, this time going backward. He works his arms and wrists in circles, then drops to one knee at a time, sliding forward to stretch out each leg as far as it will go—then seemingly even farther. Just when you think he’s pushed the limits of human flexibility, Bobrovsky slowly lowers himself even more, digging into the ice with the inner edges of his skates until he’s in a butterfly position before pressing himself into an improbable full split.
“I like to get out there before everybody else,” he admits. “I like to get out there early on the ice and do my routine to get in sync with my mind and my body. That’s where it all starts.”
Ask anyone who has worked with him over his storied career, and they’ll tell you that “Bob” or “Bobby,” as he’s affectionately known, is the hardest working guy on the Panthers roster, or

any roster for that matter. It’s an ethos that Bobrovsky says comes from his upbringing in Novokuznetsk, Russia. Set in southwestern Siberia, it’s an industrial town where people understand the value of hard work.
“My mom worked in the factory and my dad worked in coal mining,” he says. “Growing up, I was always seeing how hard people work. And all of that built up into me.”
Hard work aside, Bobrovsky says there was time for fun, too. “My dad played soccer in the summers and hockey in the winters,” he recalls. “He brought me with him to every game he
played with his workmates. That’s when I fell in love with sports.”
As a 7-year-old, Bobrovsky played youth hockey. His parents were supportive, but they weren’t particularly keen on their son tending goal. But Bobrovsky had other plans. The first lure? The cool goalie gear.
“As an adult, you realize there is a puck flying 200 kilometers per hour toward your body, and it seems crazy to choose to be a goalie,” he says. “But when I was a kid, I thought the goalie gear looked so fine. I dreamt of being in the goal, but my parents always talked me out of it.”
A puck find its way into Bobrovsky’s glove at a practice during the team’s 2024 media day at the Baptist Health IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale.
When I was a kid, I thought the goalie gear looked so fine. I Dreamt of being in the goal, but my parents always talked me out of it.”
Then, fate struck: the team’s only net minder came down with the flu on the day before a big game.
“Coach came to us and said, ‘Who wants to be a goalie?’ I was the only one who raised a hand,” he recalls. “Right away, he showed me the proper stance and outfitted me in the gear. When my parents came to pick me up after practice, Coach said to them, ‘We have a new goalie now.’ There was nothing they could say in return.”
The next day, with Bobrovsky in the net, his team won, 6 to 4. “That was it,” he says. “That’s how my goalie journey began.”
Fast-forward a decade to 2006: what should have been Bobrovsky’s National Hockey League (NHL) draft year came and went without an offer. Instead, he stayed in Russia to play four seasons with Metallurg Novokuznetsk, a Siberian team in the Kontinental Hockey League. His performance eventually caught the attention of NHL scouts, leading to a 2010 contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. That work ethic he developed from watching his hometown folks toil away at a lifetime of factory jobs? It paid off in spades: Bobrovsky won the 2013 Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year.
After moving to the Columbus Blue Jackets, Bobrovsky cemented his star power by winning the coveted Vezina Trophy (awarded annually to the NHL’s best goaltender) in both 2013 and 2017. But by 2019, he was on the hunt for something new. He found it with the Florida Panthers, who offered him a seven-year, $70-million contract. But the move wasn’t as smooth as he might have liked. In his first season with the Panthers, Bobrovsky struggled to replicate previous successes. And then the season ended early due to COVID-19.
He says in moments of trial like those—whether finding his groove on a new team, dealing with a shortened season, or facing a puck-handler intent on scoring—it’s all about mindset.
“You have to trust your ability to stop any puck at any time. But you also have to understand that at this level there are really talented guys playing against you. In some situations, they might score on you.” When that happens, Bobrovsky says, he doesn’t punish himself. “I refocus and reset. I shake it off.”
And when he makes a great save? “Same thing,” he says. “It sounds crazy. But if you make
a big save, you can’t stay with it, just like you can’t stay with a shot that makes it past you. Either way, you have to let it go and get ready for the next shot, the next moment, the next save.”
One of the biggest (or at least one of the most famous) saves of Bobrovsky’s career came in 2024 during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the Tampa Bay Lightning. With the score tied 2 to 2, Bobrovsky twisted and dove sideways across the crease to block the puck. (The Panthers went on to win 3 to 2 in overtime and eventually won the
series in five games.) Bobrovsky says the now-iconic save (which was dubbed “The Bobbery” and launched an array of merch, from commemorative pucks to T-shirts) went beyond his physical and mental powers and into the spiritual realm.
“I was out of position,” he recalls. “I threw my body as much as I could to cover [the net] but I didn’t think it would
be enough. And all of a sudden, the puck came into my glove. I think God helped our team in that moment.”
Making an otherworldly, viral save is one thing. Winning a Stanley Cup—something that neither the Florida Panthers nor Bobrovsky had ever done before—is another. When the team capped off its thirtieth season with a Game 7 victory against
the Edmonton Oilers, team captain Aleksander “Sasha” Barkov hoisted the trophy first, skating around the ice in a giddy victory lap. But he passed the precious cargo next to Bobrovsky, whose usual straightfaced stare transformed into a wide grin as he kissed the Cup and held it aloft. It’s a night, he says, that will stay with him forever.
“Two moments hit me that night,” he says. “First, when the game ends, you realize you’ve made it through all the challenges and hurdles with your teammates and you feel a kind of relief. And then there’s the moment when you get to lift the Cup. It’s the culmination of your dream. You’ve imagined it so many times before, but now it’s reality. When Sasha handed the Cup to me, that was not relief anymore that I was feeling. That feeling was pure joy.”
Just four months after that joyful night, Bobrobsky added another career milestone to his already Hall-of-Fame-worthy résumé: his 400th career win. Not too shabby, considering he’s only the fourteenth goaltender in NHL history to hit that mark—and he got there faster than anyone else on the list, achieving the feat in just 707 career games and joining legendary names like Marc-André Fleury, Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy, and the Panthers’ own Roberto Luongo.
Through it all, Bobrovsky has stayed humble. “If 20 years ago somebody had told me that I was going to be on that list, I would have said, ‘You are joking.’ Right now, I can’t even fully appreciate it. I think I’m going to appreciate it all—the big wins, the big saves, the big awards—a lot more when I finish my career. When I look back, those moments are going to melt my heart.”
But with two more years left on his contract with the Panthers, Bobrovsky isn’t looking back—only forward. “I don’t think about two games, two months, two years,” he says. “In the goal, in my career, in my life, I always stay in the moment.”
And what a great moment it is. «

Miami’s Vice City Rollers has had to fight for its very existence (and its skaters have the battle scars to prove it). Now the team is joining forces with their biggest rival to build a South Florida roller derby community that’s equal parts inclusive and intense.
Jess Swanson

For the past hour, 10 women have been running drills around the Miami Roller Rink in the suburbs of Kendall. Some are married. Others have children. A handful sport tattoos. They’re a rambunctious squad of varying ages, sizes, races, nationalities, and orientations. They share little in common except for this: a certain collective joy created by aggressively ramming through a crowd of bodies and then weaving their way around a flat, oval track on roller skates. It’s this very specific type of gratification that has led them to strap on their pads and lace up their skates at Vice City Rollers’ derby practice at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday.
“You might be kicking a lot of butt or getting your ass whooped—but at the end of the day you’re thankful,” explains Jessica “Shakesfear” Campusano, the league’s training director, who joined Vice City Rollers in 2011. “You
don’t really know what you’re made of until you’re tested. Derby will not only bring that out of you but [it will] make you realize it was always there.”
Tonight, the women—armored with knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guards, and helmets—have whizzed around the rink forward and backward, and glided through turns with Michelle Kwan–like grace. That being said, Campusano has also been directing them to run on their toe stops and skid laterally across the laminated wood floors, creating bone-chilling squeaks that echo across the empty rink. They’re in the midst of a blocking drill when veteran derby skater Jessica “Jess Roll With It” Gomez (who has more than 20 years of experience) slams into relative newbie Elise “Sheikah Freak” Lorenzo with the brute force of a runaway train. Once Lorenzo gets her bearings, she can’t help but shake her head admiringly as Gomez speeds past.
“When you get hit really good, you can’t
even be mad,” Lorenzo says with a slight lisp from her mouth guard. “You’re just like, ‘Ey, good job!’”
Roller derby can seem a lot like football: players from two teams line up and, at the mark, collide into each other to prevent the other team from advancing. It’s full-contact and it’s brutal: bruises are a given and tales of broken ankles, shattered collar bones, and torn ACLs abound. But that’s where the similarities between the two sports end.
Instead of running onto a field in turf cleats, roller derby participants take the track on retro, four-wheeled skates. Instead of a quarterback, each team (comprised of five players) elects a “jammer,” who pins a star to their helmet. And instead of moving in opposing directions to score points at either end of the field, all players skate counterclockwise and form packs that block the jammer from the opposing team. The goal? Keep the jammer from breaking through and making it around the rink. Because once
a jammer completes a lap, they score a point for each player from the opposing team that they pass.
“When I first signed up, I thought this was going to be a skating fitness club,” says Alexandra “Vixen Wreckher” Uribe, who joined the league in 2017 and serves as president of Vice City Rollers. “Now I’ve seen it all: broken ankles, broken knees, dislocated shoulders, broken clavicles, broken wrists, concussions, broken noses—all of this is typical.”
Surprisingly, it’s not masochism that draws women to roller derby. It’s the camaraderie and sisterhood forged through the inherent grit of the sport. Though roller derby dates back to the 1880s, it didn’t gain much recognition until the twenty-first century, when the 2009 film Whip It—starring Elliot Page as a rebellious teen who joins a roller derby team in small-town Texas—put this small-but-mighty sport under Hollywood’s limelight. Girls, was founded in 2007 in Fort Lauderdale. In 2011, two members splintered off and formed a new team farther south: Vice City Rollers. Today, it remains Miami’s first and only roller derby team. And as both teams’ rosters grew so too did their rivalry.
“The games against Gold Coast were really hard on us as a team,” Campusano recalls. “They had higher-skill players and had been around for longer. We were the underdogs.”
But the Miami team was scrappy from the get-go. Without a consistent venue to host practices, skaters would meet up at Tropical Park at night and park their cars in a semicircle, leaving their headlights on to illuminate the parking lot and their makeshift rink. From there, they graduated to the Suniland Roller Hockey Rink, an aging outdoor track near The Falls that left them skating in the searing heat.
By 2020, the team had grown to 24 eligible skaters. Both player performance and spectator attendance were steadily improving. Many members believed it was only a matter of time before Vice City Rollers, a recreational league, would join the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA)—the international governing body for the sport—allowing them to play in sanctioned games, place in rankings, and compete in play-off and championship tournaments. That is until the COVID-19 pandemic brought the sport to a screeching halt.
With practices and games cancelled for the foreseeable future, Vice City Rollers’

ship plummeted. By 2022, they were down to two or three skaters. “We were in the red and [our team leadership] had to have the difficult conversation about shutting down the business,” recalls Campusano, explaining that without members paying dues, the storage costs for the team’s equipment had become untenable.
The problem wasn’t unique to Vice City Rollers. All around the world, roller derby leagues faced similar pandemic-created issues of dwindling membership and mounting expenses. Take the All City Rollers, for example. The league formed in Lake City, Florida, in 2011, and shuttered in July 2023. “As much as we tried, we never quite got our wheels back under us following the global events of 2020,” the team’s social media post read.
But Campusano and Uribe didn’t relent. By the time derby practices and lessons for beginners (affectionately referred to as “fresh meat”) started picking back up in 2022, Uribe had stepped in as president. With new leadership, a new way forward revealed itself: joining forces with their biggest rival, the Gold Coast Derby Girls.
“If you guys don’t have the numbers and we don’t have the numbers, why aren’t we collaborating?” Campusano recalls thinking. “Why don’t we put our heads together and figure out how we can make both of us thrive?”
Don’t be fooled by all the aggression at roller derby bouts. Underlying all the eye black and trash talk is a shared set of values to which all skaters abide that centers inclusivity
and acceptance regardless of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, ability, language, or socioeconomic status. As an organization, WFTDA has pledged its commitment to promoting diversity, explicitly stating that members who identify as transgender or gender-expansive are fully eligible to participate so long as “women’s flat track roller derby is the version and composition of roller derby with which they most closely identify.”
For some women and girl skaters, roller derby is the first time they’re given permission to focus on what their bodies can do—as opposed to what their bodies look like.
“When I first started [roller derby], there was a coach who was constantly telling me to stop ‘falling pretty,’” says Uribe, who racked

up eight years of training as a figure skater before she joined Vice City Rollers. “When you’re figure skating, it’s all about having a smile on your face. If you make a mistake, even if you fall, [you have] to pretend it didn’t hurt. I needed to change the way I was trying to look flawless and upright all the time and switch to the derby position—keeping your chest low and always ready to take a hit.”
The WFTDA counts 445 roller derby teams across six continents, and there’s believed to be hundreds more recreational leagues worldwide. For skaters, it’s become a vast sisterhood—one that Vice City Rollers and Gold Coast Derby Girls understood was too sacred to jeoparadize. As both leagues rebuilt their rosters in the wake of the pandemic, they
decided to band together. In 2023, the teams opened their practices to skaters from either league. To take it a step further, they formed a geographic team called SoFlo Riders, an umbrella recreational league comprised of skaters from both leagues and even a few skaters from Fort Myers Roller Derby, making it easier to play scrimmages among themselves.
“It’s a marked difference from, ‘We’re going to come here to beat you guys up,’ to now, ‘We’re friends and in each other’s communication channels,’” Campusano says. A handful of Vice City Rollers teammates even attended a Gold Coast Derby Girls watch party for the WFTDA Global Championships in early November.
Because roller derby scrimmages require five players per team, 10 is the magic num-
ber of skaters that each practice requires for coaches to hold a mock bout. Before the pandemic and with rosters in the double digits, five-by-five scrimmages were common at practice. These days—and at Tuesday’s practice at the Miami Roller Rink—they’re cause for celebration and stand as a testament to the sport’s staying power locally.
“Being able to do those five-on-fives allows skaters to really feel what the actual game is like,” Uribe explains. “It’s so much better.”
“And this is all thanks to the partnership with Gold Coast,” adds Campusano, pointing out at least two skaters who had driven from Broward County on a weekday night to practice. “In 2025, we’ll only be taking the team to higher and higher levels of competition.” «

In an ever-revolving world, the watch with its intriguing history continues to tick on. Learn what to consider when adding to or deaccessioning from a collection, as well as some fascinating facts on legacy brands and classic timepieces made famous by Tinseltown’s elite.
B Y K ATHERINE VAN D ELL AND S EBASTIAN C LARKE
One of the first wristwatches was created by famed watchmaker Patek Philippe for a Hungarian noblewoman, Countess Koscowicz, in 1868.
The sheer necessity and practicality of a dependable timepiece has been essential to day-to-day life. A brief history of the wristwatch shows the earliest examples worn by women incorporated into decorative, often jeweled bracelets, while men sported pocket watches, which date back to the sixteenth century. It was not until the start of the twentieth century that the wristwatch was more regularly worn by men. Today, this functional device not only tells time but often signals personal style—and even social status. Luxury brands often have an origin in necessity, and watchmakers are no different. Many of the most sought-after and collectible watches have fascinating heritages.
LASTING LEGACIES
Luxury brand Patek Philippe was founded in 1839 as Patek, Czapek & Cie. After Francois Czapek’s departure in 1845, the company was renamed Patek Philippe & Cie. The company’s commitment to craftsmanship and horological excellence for the past 185 years continues to show in its timepieces. In 1868, Patek Philippe created one of the first wristwatches for Countess Koscowicz of Hungary, and today models, such as the Calatrava, Nautilus, and Grand Complications, are easily recognized by watch aficionados and prized among collectors.
Louis Brandt launched the watch brand Omega in 1894. By 1932, the brand assumed the role of official timekeeper for the Olympic Games. The Seamaster, introduced in 1948, is still a favorite among divers and adventurers; however, perhaps the most well-known model is the Omega Speedmaster. Originally designed for motorsports, it was selected by NASA for
space missions, earning the moniker “Moonwatch.” In fact, the Omega Speedmaster was the first watch worn on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. While NASA considered several watches for the Apollo mission—including the Rolex Daytona, the Longines-Wittnauer Chronograph, the Bulova Chronograph, and the Hamilton Electric 500—the Omega Speedmaster was chosen for its performance and reliability under extreme conditions. Omega continues to produce excellent timepieces, and unlike other high-end watches, these are often readily available from authorized dealers.
Rolex, founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, began by importing Swiss movements and placing them into high-quality watch cases. By 1908, a trademark was issued for Rolex, as the name was considered easy to pronounce across multiple languages and short enough to fit on a watch dial. After receiving the first-ever chronometric certification in 1910, Rolex created the waterproof and dustproof Oyster case (1926), patented its perpetual movement (1931), and created iconic watches, including the Datejust (1945), the Submariner (1953), and—perhaps the most recognizable Rolex (if not the most recognizable wristwatch of all time)—the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona (1963).
When the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was first released, it was not very popular, as many of its functions were new to buyers. Initially priced at $230, it was also thought to be too expensive. Actor and accomplished racecar driver Paul Newman thrust the watch into the spotlight in the late 1960s. His inscribed Daytona gifted from his wife, Joanne Woodward, displayed cautionary words: “Drive Carefully[,] Me.” This sold at auction in 2017 for $17.75 million, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Nell Newman Foundation.
Acquiring a new Rolex from an authorized dealer can take months or even years for in-demand models
Astronaut Buzz Aldrin wore the Omega Speedmaster on the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.

due to waiting lists. And, these models are often more expensive. For the impatient, turning to the secondary market is often the only option. This, sometimes referred to as the gray market, can be a difficult place to navigate without the help of a knowledgeable guide.
TIMELY ADVICE
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the watch market exploded. The perfect storm of an accelerated economy combined with limited supplies pushed prices for many highly prized luxury timepieces through the roof. The current market, while softer, appears mostly resilient from external factors. A robust and active watch market is here to stay, with some watches remaining unattainable.
Many collectors—both avid and novice—use the secondary market as a source for adding to or deaccessioning from their collection. While there are endless resources for buying and selling watches, it is important to know all watch sellers are not created equal. Knowing the source is crucial. Having appropriate packaging and documents, known as “box and papers,” makes a big difference in valuing—and maintaining the value of—your purchase. Watch components, from the box and papers to any given part of the watch itself, may be reproduced or altered. For instance, if you own a Rolex with an after-market dial or bezel, it is no longer considered authentic by Rolex.
Modern watches that trade on the secondary market are easier to price than vintage watches that are often influenced by multifold factors. For instance, patina, a condition of the surface affected by wear, can be a factor. Other considerations include fading to the dial and scuffs to the case.
Provenance, which includes history of previous ownership and service history, also plays a role in value. Often a well-worn watch with a great story carries significantly more value than a nondescript similar example. Think of the Rolex Daytona worn by Paul Newman or the Rolex GMT that Marlon Brando wore in the 1979 film Apocalypse
Another example of the Seamaster by Omega, a brand that has served as the official timekeeper for the Olympic Games since 1932.
Now. Despite the watch missing its bezel, it sold for nearly $5 million.
Even for new, unworn watches, provenance matters. Sylvester Stallone recently sold an extremely rare, unworn Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, still in the original plastic casing, for $5.4 million. (These watches more often trade from $3 million to $3.5 million.) When it comes to valuation, working with a trusted source can allay many fears, but you should always seek a second opinion. And sellers should respect this, especially for more significant purchases.
Of course, there are other luxury watch brands in the marketplace (too numerous to mention) that have equally interesting origins and offer highly desirable watches. Entering the watch market does not have to be expensive. And, it should be fun. Regardless of price point, securing your ideal timepiece will keep you moving—on time and in style. «

CLUB LEVEL UP
As it marks a decade in Miami, one of Brickell’s most renowned “clubstaurants” has unveiled a $4 million renovation and an updated menu, all while maintaining its trendsetting appeal. Introducing the reborn Marion: a lively fusion of dining and nightlife where Asian-Mediterranean cuisine, inventive cocktails, performances, and tableside dancing come together to create an experience fully aligned with the Magic City’s famously indulgent nightlife.
Returning patrons and newcomers alike will be captivated by the revamped interior that features bold pink accents and 15 custom Murano flower chandeliers that add a touch of glamour. The reimagined menu offers a blend of sushi, fresh seafood, and prime cuts, with highlights like the A5 Wagyu Marrow Roll—a luxurious combination of asparagus, avocado, crispy shallots, dry-aged Wagyu, marrow and chimichurri butter,
and micro shiso—and the must-try sea bass, a Mediterranean-inspired delight infused with coconut and cilantro.
Marion’s cocktails push the boundaries of modern mixology, with standouts like the Disobedience (Volcan blanco tequila, velvet falernum, peach, coconut oil, and sparkling wine). A glass of Champagne remains a top choice, thanks to an impressive selection of more than 300 premium bottles housed in a dedicated Champagne room. (marionmiami.com) —Paul Rubio

SEAFOOD
Not Too CRABBY
Joe’s Stone Crab has been cracking the claws of Florida’s most prized shellfish since the early 1910s. Now in its 112th season, the famed, fourth-generation, family-owned establishment offers exciting updates that make a visit more enticing than ever. Here are four features to look forward to.
BY PAUL RUBIO
1
KEEPING IT CLAW-SOME WITH STABLE PRICES
While Joe’s may not be a budget spot, it’s refreshing that the restaurant has resisted the steep price hikes seen elsewhere in Miami. Traditionally alternating between dynamic (market) and set pricing for its renowned chilled stone crab platters (served with a secret mustard sauce and essential bib), Joe’s hasn’t raised prices since last season. Stone crab plates remain set by size: jumbos at $130, large at $80, select at $60, and medium at $50. Other seafood entrées like cod, shrimp, and tuna are priced under $35, and the iconic fried half chicken stays a surprising $9. Against the odds, Joe’s now stands as one of Miami’s most affordable upscale dining options—who would have thought?
TABLES FOR LOCALS
With so many outof-towners booking far in advance, in recent years locals have found themselves edged out of their beloved Joe’s. To make things easier for regulars, Joe’s has reinstated its classic no-reservations policy, returning to a first-come, first-served approach. However, guests can still secure priority seating by joining the maître d’s list online up to a week in advance. Like the old days, upon arrival, check in with the maître d and you’ll be seated as quickly as possible (remembering that “quickly” is relative during peak hours and sometimes involves the slip of a bill).
2
NEW COCKTAIL MAGIC
While regulars may fiercely defend the nostalgia of enjoying a classic stiff martini (or three) at Joe’s, the restaurant has admittedly lagged in terms of Miami’s mixology trend—until now. In its most significant update in 30 years, Joe’s has launched a revamped beverage program featuring 15 new signature cocktails, each served in bespoke glassware and some with custom ice cubes. Standout options include the vodka-spiked Key Lime Martini made with Joe’s key lime curd, the sweet-and-sour Lychee Martini featuring lycheelavender syrup, and the spicy Watermelon Margarita mixed with Silver Patron, Cointreau, fresh watermelon juice, lime, and jalapeño.
3 4
A FRESH CATCH ON THE MENU
Joe’s isn’t overhauling its fabled menu, but it is adding a few intriguing new dishes. Look forward to an appetizer of black mussels sautéed with a spiced tomato lobster broth, a 24-ounce prime porterhouse sliced off the bone and broiled with clarified butter, grilled snapper in shrimp creole sauce topped with crispy leeks, and the return of the ahi tuna with soy reduction, back after a hiatus from the 2023 menu. These updates keep Joe’s Stone Crab both true to its roots and vibrant with fresh energy—a classic that never goes out of style. (joesstonecrab.com)

TASTE OF FLORIDA
A tribute to Florida’s rich natural bounty—from seasonal produce to cattle ranches and coastal offerings—Daniel’s brings a refined, modern steak house experience to Fort Lauderdale. This latest venture from Thomas Angelo, the Fiola owner and founder of Gioia Hospitality Group, sees him choosing his hometown of Broward over Miami.
Located in the former Canyon restaurant space off U.S.1, near Las Olas Boulevard (just a five-minute Uber ride from the Brightline station), the restaurant’s atmosphere is warm and inviting, with soothing earth tones, copper accents, hunter green banquettes, walnut wood tables, and elegant chandeliers resembling sea urchins. The menu takes guests on a tour of Florida’s finest ingredients, starting in the north with Skipper Sweet Oysters from a sustainable aquaculture farm in the Panhandle, and journeying down to the Florida Keys for hog snapper served as a fresh take on fish and chips.
Throughout the meal, guests can savor fresh produce in dishes like the Swank Farms kale and hearts of palm salad, and prime Florida-raised cuts such as the Arrowhead Ranch Wagyu eye of rib and the 16-ounce, grass-fed New York strip from Providence Cattle. Each cut is grilled to perfection and complemented by house-made sauces, showcasing the best of local flavors. (danielssteak.com) –P.R.

SUSHI STEAL
Since 2020, Omakai Sushi has operated solely as a takeout and delivery concept in Aventura. Late last year, however, it evolved into a stylish brick-and-mortar destination, joining full-service locations in Wynwood and Coconut Grove, along with new openings in both Doral and Downtown. The brand’s main appeal—whether dining in or taking out—is its unique combination of high quality and affordability. With fish and seafood freshness comparable to top-tier Japanese restaurants and meals crafted by skilled sushi chefs, Omakai offers an elevated experience without the premium price tag.
The omakase here is neither the lavish splurge nor the lengthy experience often associated with high-end Japanese dining. Diners can select from a variety of options, with the Oma Deluxe as a crowd favorite: a generous selection of 10 sashimi, nigiri, and handroll assortments, all for $50. While à la carte items and tempting extras like the toro truffle nigiri are available, the set menus provide a solid foundation for a highly satisfying meal. In total, Omakai strikes a balance that appeals to casual sushi lovers and discerning palates alike, making it a refreshing and accessible addition to Aventura’s dining scene. (omakai.com) –P.R.

A LUCKY CARROT DRINK FOR AN AUSPICIOUS NEW YEAR
BY JULES ARON
Traditionally, we pour bubbly on New Year’s Eve, but what about New Year’s Day? The practice of consuming auspicious foods to usher in a prosperous New Year is rooted in cultural folklore around the world.
In Southern states and for many Black Americans across the country, a steaming pot of black-eyed peas is associated with good luck, while in Japan soba noodles symbolize longevity and resilience. In Jewish tradition, the symbolic act of eating carrots during Rosh Hashanah expresses a hope for a prosperous
year with many blessings. Likewise, in Chinese New Year celebrations, carrots represent good luck and are often part of various festive dishes, including Yusheng salad. Other cultures believe round or ringshaped desserts will bring a full circle of luck for the year.
FRANCESCACOVIELLO
In the spirit of renewal and inspired by this rich tapestry of culinary traditions, we are toasting 2025 with a lush carrot cake cocktail that blends the vibrance of this auspicious vegetable with a touch of creative flair, ensuring that your festive gatherings are both sweet and filled with good wishes for the year ahead.

IS GREAT WINE MADE OR CREATED? CHAMPAGNE PRODUCERS ARE CHANGING THE GAME WHEN IT COMES TO SOUGHT-AFTER SIPS.
BY SARAH PHILLIPS MCCARTAN
In the world of wine, Christophe Baron is famed for his creativity. The Frenchman is best known for making wine in Washington under the Cayuse label (including Bionic Frog Syrah and God Only Knows Grenache). But Baron also makes Champagne. At a recent dinner at Vinya in Coral Gables, he told guests, “I’m not a winemaker. I’m a vigneron. You don’t make wine, you create it.”
Baron’s sentiments speak to an exciting movement that has been bubbling up since the 1970s. Vineyards in France’s Champagne region—about an hour east of Paris—are owned by thousands of small growers. The majority of small-grape farmers sell their fruit to big houses like Veuve Clicquot and Moët & Chandon, who use them to make wines bottled with their famous labels.
But in recent decades, some growers have been changing the game. Instead of selling grapes to the big guys, they’re making and bottling their own cuvées. They are, as Baron noted, vignerons: people who tend the land,
grow the grapes, and then make their own wines or Champagnes.
Influential growers like Anselme Selosse (Champagne Jacques Selosse) and his former intern Olivier Collin (Ulysse Collin) have approached Champagne winemaking with great creativity, borrowing ideas from other regions around the world. This includes making Champagnes from single vineyards that boast distinctive characteristics and applying innovative winemaking techniques that yield bottles that stand out from the crowd. As a result, their cuvées have gained cult followings. Even if you’re lucky enough to find a Selosse or Collin bottle in a store or on a wine list, they’ll set you back hundreds of dollars. And if you want to try Christophe Baron’s excellent Champagnes, you’ll need to join a wait list.
But don’t fret: plenty of other brilliant growers offer options that are more readily available. Look out for Champagnes by Pierre Péters, Cédric Bouchard, Egly-Ouriet, Jean Milan, Pierre Gimonnet & Fils, and Frederic Savart. The list of exciting Champagnes is long, and there are always new winemakers to seek out. Or should I say vignerons? (winebysarah.net) «

FROM CITY TO SHORE, THE FINE ART OF MIAMI LIVING
MASTER CLASS
A desire for a “commanding sense of arrival” drove the design for Tarek and Lina Hammoud’s roomy penthouse at The Ritz-Carlton Residences development in Miami Beach. Sprawling 6,000 square feet indoors and boasting nearly 8,000 square feet of outdoor living space, the impeccably curated residence does more than just deliver a lasting impression. The bespoke design created by Jay Britto and David Charette, founders of Miami’s award-winning Britto Charette studio, pays homage to Piero Lissoni’s architectural vision for the building while still expressing the personalities of the homeowners and harnessing the commanding views. When the dwelling was nothing more than raw concrete without ceilings or walls, the
design team met with the Hammouds and walked the site together to come up with a custom layout. “In creating their design, we studied the views and the sun’s path throughout,” recalls Charette. “For our team, generating a sense of arrival is essential.”
Panoramic views of South Beach greet visitors upon exiting the private elevator. Beyond the foyer, two massive works by photographer Mario Testino dominate the great room. Intentional public and private zones delineate an expansive floor plan. The seating area leading to the primary bedroom suite—along with closets, a bathroom, and a bedroom—all point east to capture sunrise views, creating a sense of privacy and separation from the main living spaces. The south-facing public zones
enjoy views of a stepped terrace with precise landscaping and a pool patio. The kitchen sits adjacent to the family room, a semi-private west-facing area separated from the open entertainment spaces. Its strategic positioning prevents cooking aromas from permeating the rest of the home.
“The columns and the exterior building envelope set the rhythm for the interior design,” notes Charette. “We used the framework of the existing columns and structure to create the proportions and then built a clay model to verify those proportions before going into the final photorealistic phase. When you apply these rules—light, views, axes, geometry— the space designs itself.” (brittocharette.com) —Jeanne DeLathouder

Game Day GORGEOUS
WIN BIG WITH PARTY DECOR INSPIRED BY YOUR FAVORITE TEAMS
BY ALENA CAPRA
With the College Football Playoffs underway and the Super Bowl upon us in just under a month, it’s time to get your home ready for some game day entertaining. Prepare to take it to the house with a few of my go-to team spirit tips and tricks. (alenacapradesigns.com)
CHEER in Comfort
If you’re not on your feet cheering for your favorite player, you and your guests are probably relaxing on the couch. To add comfort and spirit, toss a few decorative pillows around—either in your team colors or bearing its logo in neutral tones that complement your existing decor.
COLOR BLOCK
When it comes to team-themed parties, the tablescape is just as important as the food you serve. Opt for disposable plates, cups, and napkins emblazoned with logos, or simply color block with your favorite team’s colors for a winning look.
Looking to incorporate an eye-catching team logo into your wall decor? Try a lightweight LED illuminated sign or some easy-to-install (and easy-to-remove) decals that showcase your team spirit without sacrificing style once the game clock reaches zero.
RUN THE TABLE
Create an easy-yetimpressive football field on a kitchen island or a table using a disposable green tablecloth and adding 1-inch-wide white tape to create yard lines and hash marks. It’s a simple trick that sets a festive scene.
Don’t forget that food can be decorative too! Create a candy bar with sweet treats in your team colors or assemble your own snack stadium for a fun way to display your game day grub.

BOLD COLORS
You’ve heard the saying “go big or go home.” In this case it’s “go big and go home.” Those who shy away from vibrant wall colors can instead opt to incorporate bold hues via textiles on pillows and/or wall treatments. These lowercommitment elements can be peeled out when you are ready to reinvent a room again. Diving into the psychology of color, you can incorporate brightness in the form of warm colors (reds, oranges, and yellows) to stimulate energy and happiness, or cool colors (blues, greens, and purples) to enhance a feeling of calm.
MIX AND MATCH PATTERNS
Further the impact of textile selections by mixing and matching patterns. Many designer fabric lines have done the hard work for you by creating collections that aren’t so matchymatchy, but that still go together well. Before her passing last year, fashion icon Iris Apfel created a Maximal Couture collection of textiles for Fabricut. Playing on her flair for layering designs, this collection embraces Apfel’s eclectic style and is the perfect way to have fun with color and pattern. (fabricut.com)
NOSTALGIC AND HERITAGE PRINTS
Textile prints and patterns continue to gain inspiration from the past. This blend of old and new comes in the form of classic designs in alternative color combinations and contemporary
interpretations of traditional prints. The nod to nostalgia brings a certain sense of comfort to interiors. The Scalamandré Metropolitan Museum of Art collection draws on artwork and objects from nine of the Met’s curated departments, resulting in a captivating selection of

fabrics, wallcoverings, and trimmings that share a story steeped in intrigue. (scalamandre.com)
FLORALS
Floral prints are the little black dress of the textile world—they always deliver and are always on trend. From tiny buds to big blooms and everything in between, you can’t go wrong with creating a garden party of sorts in your home.
Quadrille, whose portfolio contains a number of floral prints to choose from, introduced a
delightfully fresh Spring Blossom collection in 2024 that speaks to the joy of flowers. (quadrillefabrics.com)
SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS
Eco-friendliness is trending in virtually every industry, and textiles are no exception. Manufacturers are exploring ways to make production processes easier on the environment and employing materials that are sustainable and even recycled. UK-based Fermoie makes its new Indoor-Outdoor fabric collection from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles and without any PFCs, PFAS, or other harmful forever chemicals. (fermoie.com)
ARTISAN TECHNIQUES
Consumers are embracing fabric and textile products that display craftsmanship and are made in smaller quantities. These hallmarks
enhance the meaning behind what we display in our homes and add a human connection to our spaces. As the founder of Bolé Road Textiles, Ethiopian-born Hana Getachew seeks to create pieces inspired by the culture and beauty of her native country. Her designs are brought to life by partner artisans in Ethiopia. (boleroadtextiles.com)

If you’ve never seen freestyle soccer—a sport that involves juggling, dancing, and acrobatic feats with a soccer ball (no hands allowed)—then you’ve never seen moves like Laura Biondo’s. A former soccer player in Italy’s Major League and a Cirque du Soleil performer, Biondo is now one of the top female freestylers in the world and the first to establish a Guinness world record in the sport. Today, she holds 13 Guinness world record titles, including the most sit-down football crossovers in 30 seconds (62), the most double around-the-world ball control tricks in one minute (24), the most football touches with the head in one minute (206), and the most football head rolls in 30 seconds (20). We caught up with Biondo to learn more about life on the ball. (laurabiondo.com) —Kristen Desmond LeFevre

LAST WORD
My full name is… Laura Biondo. I live in… Weston. I grew up in… Venezuela, the United States, and Italy. I came to Miami when… I was 10 years old. When I was a kid, I wanted to... work for Disney as a cartoonist. I first became interested in soccer... when I moved to the United States and saw women playing professionally for the first time. My first memory of playing soccer is… being really bad at juggling. I first discovered freestyle when… I was recovering from an injury. My brother introduced me to it. To me, freestyle is… my life, my identity, and my all. Going from being a soccer player to being a freestyle performer is… like navigating two different worlds that understand each other. My first big break was… winning my Guinness world records and working for Cirque du Soleil. The first Guinness world record I broke was… the most around-the-worlds in one minute. For me, being a Guinness world record holder means… breaking barriers and setting standards so others can break them, too. Being a competitive freestyler is… pure passion. It pushes you to become better as a human. The way I come up with new tricks is… by watching oth -
ers and getting inspired. On an average day, you’ll find me… training and working. The toughest part of my job is… staying sharp at my highest and best level. What brings me great joy in my job is… paving the way for more women to follow their dreams. If I wasn’t doing this, I’d probably be… working at Disney or owning a coffee shop. My secret obsession is… coffee. One bad habit I cannot break is… eating french fries. When I want to relax… I need to learn how to relax! I am always go-go-go. My favorite spot in Miami is… the beach. My last out-of-town escape was… Italy, for a freestyle competition. When I’m not working, you’ll find me… reading. If you’re coming to my house for dinner, I will probably… cook a feast! If I’m eating out in South Florida, I’ll book a table at… Dal Contadino Trattoria in Fort Lauderdale. The next big project I’m excited about is... making it to my twenty-second World Finals event. If I could give my younger self advice, it would be... you are more than enough. You don’t need to prove yourself to others. Whenever someone tells me they want to be a professional athlete, I tell them… fight for your dream!
