Expert Advice from a Facial Plastic Surgeon

SEPTEMBER

DEMYSTIFYING FACELIFTS

Once seen as a procedure that left patients looking stretched or unnatural— and reserved only for those in their later years—the facelift has evolved dramatically over the past decade. Still, confusion, misconceptions, and fear often surround the topic. Let’s clarify some of the most common questions.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FACELIFTS?

1. The SMAS Facelift: This is the traditional approach. The skin is lifted, and the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer underneath is repositioned. Though there are many names and variations based on how the SMAS is tightened, the underlying concept is similar. However, because the SMAS remains attached to deeper facial structures, this method can sometimes create a tight or pulled appearance and may provide a less robust lift.

2. The Deep Plane Facelift: Increasingly popular over the last decade, this technique offers more natural and longer-lasting results. It involves lifting the SMAS layer away from the deeper attachments, allowing it to be repositioned without pulling against the muscles and ligaments. This reduces tension on the skin and results in a more elegant, youthful look.

3. The Endoscopic Facelift: This is typically a variation of the deep plane lift, performed through small incisions in the hairline, and sometimes around the ears. While it allows for internal repositioning of tissues, it does not permit skin removal, so it’s suitable only for patients without significant skin laxity.

Note: A “skin-only” facelift is not considered a high-quality option. It may provide minimal improvement and often leads to poor, shortlived results.

WHAT ABOUT A “MINI-LIFT”?

The term “mini-lift” is vague and unregulated.

It might refer to shorter incisions, limited facial areas, or simply a less invasive version of surgery. Unfortunately, it’s often used as a marketing term to attract patients with promises of faster recovery and less downtime.

Be cautious: when someone claims they can deliver similar results with less surgery, ask for specifics—What type of lift is being performed? What are the incision lengths? What is the extent of the dissection?

WHAT AREAS DOES A FACELIFT IMPROVE?

A traditional facelift improves the midface, jawline, and neck—from just below the eyes down to the collarbone. It does not address the upper face (forehead and brows). That area requires a brow lift, which may be done separately or included in a comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan.

IS THERE AN IDEAL AGE FOR A FACELIFT?

There’s no universal “ideal” age. Candidates are those who have visible laxity in the face or neck and who feel that surgery is the right step for them. In recent years, facelift patients have trended younger—with many in their 40s and even late 30s seeking surgery. At the same time, some patients in their 50s or 60s may be better suited for fat grafting rather than a facelift.

The key is a thoughtful, honest consultation with a skilled surgeon. Their role is to assess your anatomy, explain what a facelift can (and cannot) do, and guide you toward the best options. The decision is ultimately yours.

ALL THE BUZZ

What started with a birthday-gift beehive in the Florida Keys has grown into a thriving business known as Keez Beez. And there’s no better time to shine a light on this South Florida–bred brand than September, which happens to be National Honey Month.

Founded by Isabelle Ballestas and John David—a retired civil engineer and deep-sea captain, respectively—the business began as a hobby. When their first hive produced 200 pounds of honey in a single year, they found themselves with more product than they could eat or gift to friends. That’s when they decided to bottle and sell their liquid gold locally.

Today, Keez Beez boasts more than 600 hives scattered across South Florida. Its products are “single floral sourced,” meaning each jar is derived primarily from the nectar of a specific plant. The brand’s product lineup includes honey varieties like black mangrove (the bestseller), rich avocado, subtly spicy Brazilian pepper, and sweet lychee. Another fan favorite? Keez Beez’s honey hot sauce: a craveable fusion of aged red peppers and mild honey that’s perfect for drizzling on roasted veggies or pizzas, or glazing meats pre-grill.

The company’s commitment to purity is also worth celebrating. Unlike industrially produced honey, every drop of Keez Beez’s honey is raw, unfiltered, and free of chemicals, antibiotics, and additives. Ballestas and David control the entire process from beehive to bottling, earning them certifications from both the Non-GMO Project and Kosher Organics.

Look for Keez Beez’s eye-catching jars and bottles at farmers markets, gourmet grocers, and boutique shops across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. One taste, and you’ll see why this brand is buzzing its way into discerning local pantries. (keezbeez. com) —Jesse Scott

Q&A

MIAMI, REMEMBERED

ARTIST JACK PIERSON ON HIS TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE MAGIC CITY

Internationally celebrated for his work across mediums like photography, sculpture, installation, and video (yes, he does it all), artist Jack Pierson has long captured the melancholic glamour of queer life, fame, and longing. Known for his text-based signage sculptures and diaristic images of friends and fleeting moments, Pierson’s work is as intimate as it is iconic. Beginning this month, The Bass Museum of Art presents “Jack Pierson: The Miami Years,” a landmark solo exhibition that delves into the city’s profound influence on his artistic journey. Opening September 24, the show features new and historic works, including the monumental  Array (Miami)  and the first-ever re-creation of Pierson’s 1985 bedroom from a South Beach hotel. The exhibition reflects the two key periods when Miami served as a turning point in his personal and professional life. Aventura recently caught up with Pierson to talk about his time in the city and what  “ The Miami Years” means to him today. (thebass.org)

Aventura : What does the city of Miami mean to you?

Pierson: It means quite a lot. It was somehow like my graduate school…I went there for Christmas vacation and spent all my money and couldn’t get home. So, I took a job and lived in this $55-a-week hotel by the beach. The six months being away from everything I had ever known, being my own person after art school, after a move to New York…all of a sudden, I was in Miami Beach, and it just seemed like heaven on earth. I really did have some amplification of my innate sensibility that occurred in Miami Beach in 1985.

What parts of that story will be reflected in your exhibition at The Bass?

The centerpiece is a huge 8-foot-by-21-foot wall loaded with pictures I took. Some are my real art and some are just snapshots. It sort of tells the story from right to left, from 1985 to 1989, of my time in Miami. I’m also re-creating

the bedroom from that hotel I mentioned.

What are your thoughts on Miami’s evolution into a global art hot spot?

I went through a period of recoil and resentment related to Miami. But last year I went back to Art Basel specifically. Yes, there’s the traffic and, yes, the city I knew is gone below Fifth Street…but tucked in there somewhere, my world still exists. I had a nice couple of weeks down there last February, soaking it in and making sure that this homage I wanted to make was still deserved.

How do you see your relationship with Miami now, and moving into the future?

The show is a good amount of excitement, and there’s part of me that wants to go there for the winter again this year. I re-fell in love with [Miami] again last February. It’s all different and it’s all the same. And that’s like life.

SAVOR THE BOUNTY OF THE FALL SEASON AT MIAMI’S FRUIT AND SPICE PARK

September in South Florida brings a swath of seasonal goodness, especially if you know where to look. Tucked away in the Redland agricultural region about an hour south of Downtown is the Fruit and Spice Park, a 37-acre botanical wonderland that doubles as a living library of some of the world’s most exotic fruits, herbs, spices, and nuts. Managed by Miami-Dade County Parks and playing host to more than 50,000 visitors each year, this subtropical Eden is home to more than 500 edible plant varieties. You’ll find everything from 15 kinds of jackfruit to 180 kinds of mangoes.

Stroll winding boardwalks, sip from a fresh coconut, and sample fruit that’s fallen to the ground—yes, that’s allowed! With daily tours at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and a fruit-tasting experience at 3 p.m., there’s always something ripe for discovery. For a more tailored vibe, private tours are available for schools, clubs, and those fruit-obsessed friend groups looking for a field trip. This month brings some bonus events, too: the park will host a Stargazing Night September 6 and a Fall Adventure Day September 20.

As for what’s in season now? Here are five quirky, can’t-miss fruits currently ripe and ready at the Fruit and Spice Park. (miamidade.gov/parks/ fruit-spice.asp)

ELEPHANT APPLE

DON’T EXPECT A SUGARY SNACK; THIS HARD-SHELLED, SOUR FRUIT FROM INDIA IS MORE ABOUT TANG. OFTEN USED IN CHUTNEYS AND STEWS, IT’S A FAVORITE OF ELEPHANTS IN THE WILD (HENCE ITS NAME) AND ADVENTUROUS FOODIES.

AUSTRALIAN FINGER LIME KNOWN AS “CITRUS CAVIAR,” THIS UNUSUAL LIME BURSTS WITH TINY, JUICE-FILLED PEARLS THAT POP IN YOUR MOUTH. NATIVE TO AUSTRALIA AND VERY RARE IN SOUTH FLORIDA, IT’S A TANGY TREAT TO TRY.

RED CATTLE GUAVA NATIVE TO SOUTH AMERICA, THIS GUAVA VARIETAL HAS SOFT, RED SKIN AND A SWEET, FLORAL INTERIOR. SMALLER THAN THE AVERAGE GUAVA, IT’S OFTEN EATEN WHOLE, SEEDS AND ALL.

BUDDHA’S HAND IT LOOKS LIKE AN OCTOPUS AND IT SMELLS LIKE LEMON CANDY. BUT BE ADVISED: YOU WOULDN’T WANT TO SLICE IT UP AND EAT THIS FRUIT, WHICH IS MOSTLY RIND. ITS ZEST, HOWEVER, IS PRIZED FOR PERFUMING ROOMS, SEASONING RECIPES, AND GARNISHING COCKTAILS.

HOG PLUM

PUCKERY, SOUR, AND SHOCKINGLY ADDICTIVE, THE HOG PLUM THRIVES IN TROPICAL CLIMATES LIKE OURS. IT’S BEST ENJOYED PICKLED OR WITH A SPRINKLE OF CHILI POWDER AND LIME.

Nikki Beach

As the CEO, co-founder, and owner of the internationally recognized hot spot Nikki Beach, Lucia Penrod is building a legacy that expands beyond the Magic City to locations in 10 countries—including four resorts, 12 beach clubs, and a new restaurant in Cannes. This Nicaraguan-born powerhouse says “the Nikki Beach empire is proof that with hard work and perseverance, you can make huge changes. Together [with my late husband, Jack] we decided to transform the city and the hospitality landscape of the world.” (nikkibeach.com)

Before launching her own vodka brand, Leti Fernandez De Mesa worked in art galleries, eventually starting her own auction house in Colombia. But as she conceptualized her next chapter, she decided to leave the art world behind to create something new: an organic, fragrant, and gluten-free vodka. Introduced in 2022, her pink-hued Una Vodka now decorates Miami’s favorite bars and has made the rounds in private residences, too. Handcrafted in South Florida, where De Mesa now resides, this small-batch spirit is loaded with floral infusions like begonia, orange blossom, and vanilla flowers. De Mesa says her ingredients make sipping Una a refreshing experience because “only flowers can respect the purity of vodka and only vodka can respect the essence of flowers.” (unavodka.com)

The Tips Golf

Hailing from Mexico City, Alejandro Piekarewicz is a self-proclaimed “golf nut” who relocated to South Florida with his wife, Elise, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Realizing that Miami is golf obsessed too, Piekarewicz opened The Tips Golf, offering five Trackman iO simulator bays, private golf instruction, and a space for drinks and dining. “I decided to bring my passion to Brickell, but in an air-conditioned and elevated way,” Piekarewicz says. Pro tip: after hitting a few rounds, order the Miami Heat cocktail prepared with spicy salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne pepper. (thetipsgolf.com)

Colombian-born Alex Srour partnered with his wife, Maya Memovic, to debut St. Dom—a clothing line and boutique in Cartagena and Bogotá—in 2018. Srour grew up in the fashion business, raised by parents who launched women’s brand Salomon in the 1980s. After renaming the brand Azulu, their locations in Latin America continue to thrive. And since opening their only stateside location in the Aventura Mall in 2021, this female-focused brand has been spotted on many a Magic City “it” girl about town. (azulu.com)

FALLING FOR FALL

TURN OVER A NEW LEAF THIS SEASON WITH THESE SIX MAGIC CITY MUST-DOS GUIDE

Go Off GRID

Want to camp but not really rough it? Glamping at Everglades National Park with Flamingo Adventures offers safari-style eco-tents perched on raised platforms designed to keep you safe from both the critters and the elements. Head to the southernmost tip of the Florida peninsula—about an hour-and-45-minute drive from Miami—and you’ll have access to a range of recreational options (think: boat tours, kayak and canoe excursions, and bike rentals) plus educational activities (ranger-led plant and bird walks or our favorite: guided stargazing) right in the heart of the largest subtropical wilder-

ness in the United States. Choose from tents outfitted with a queen bed or two double beds; each tent has a seating area, fans, and electricity to charge your gadgets—plus stunning views of the Florida Bay to replace your screen time obsession. If canvas coverings aren’t your style,

reserve one of the 42-foot houseboats fitted with essentials like air-conditioning, bathrooms, and cooking equipment for a floating stay that lets you explore the River of Grass in comfort. (flamingoeverglades.com)

TAKE FLIGHT

See things from a new perspective as you float above South Florida in a hot-air balloon captained by Miami native Aaron Farber, owner of Balloon Over Miami Depart at sunrise (optimal for balloon launching due to low winds and cooler temperatures) from the Everglades Campground in the Redlands to begin your hour-long adventure. You’ll take in sky-high views of the Everglades, Biscayne Bay, and more. Post-flight, partake in an assortment of light bites and a classic Champagne celebration, a tradition that dates back to the first passenger balloon flight in 1783. (balloonovermiami.com)

DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

Tap into the rhythm of salsa and bachata in the heart of the Art Deco District with Miami Salsa Night hosted by Salsa Mia at Mango’s Tropical Café. Think of it as line dancing with Latin flair. During the three-hour experience, instructors will teach you the basic steps to these popular dances so you can get moving and grooving like a pro. Feel free to bring the whole family (all ages are welcome until 10 p.m.), make it a romantic date night, or gather your group for an epic friends’ night out. (salsamia.com)

Pass the SNIFF TEST

Since micro-perfumes are trending, why not try your hand at creating your own signature scent? At Tijon Miami in Coral Gables, you can do just that. The fragrance retailer with an in-house lab offers Perfume 101 classes—a bespoke three-hour experience that not only provides a deep dive into the history of perfume, the biology of the sense of smell, and the chemistry of how fragrance is made, but also lets you play mixologist with more than 300 oils that you can combine in as many formulas as time allows. At the end of your session, you’ll go home with a 1.85-ounce bottle of your own handcrafted fragrance. (tijon.com/pages/miami)

SET SAIL

Just off the Rickenbacker Causeway that leads to Key Biscayne lies Hobie Beach. Also known as Windsurfer Beach, the spot features calm, shallow waters and consistent winds (not to mention Insta-worthy views of Downtown Miami and Brickell), making it the perfect spot to give windsurfing a whirl. Miami Watersports (with locations on Virginia Key and Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove) offers windsurfing rentals and even private lessons to get you up and catching the wind in your sail in no time. NO MAMA DRAMA

LOIS MARKS BOTTLES MIAMI’S BACKYARD MAGIC

A citrus revolution quietly began more than four decades ago in Lois Marks’ Pinecrest backyard—an oasis brimming with lemon, lime, and orange trees. Long before organic labels were trendy and farm-to-table became a buzzy phrase, Marks (affectionately known as “Big Mama”) was crafting homemade dressings from the produce she grew in her own soil. Now that same zippy dressing she whipped up out of frustration with supermarket options years ago is taking center stage on Miami’s culinary scene.

It all started in the 1980s, when Marks turned to her backyard and began experimenting with salad dressing recipes made from fresh herbs and citrus. A neighbor gave her a handful of calamondins, a tart-sweet fruit that’s native to Southeast Asia and abundant in South Florida. From there, the seed of Big Mama’s Calamondin Vinaigrette was planted. “I didn’t want anything full of chemicals,” Marks recalls. “I just wanted something that tasted good and felt good.”

For decades, friends and family hoarded bottles of Marks’ bespoke vinaigrette. But it wasn’t until 2020, when her son, Ethan Shapiro, posted a photo of a fresh batch of the dressing on Facebook, that things truly took off. The post went viral. “After a couple hundred bottles, I said to my mom, ‘I think we have something here,’” recalls Shapiro, who left his corporate gig at IBM to co-found and work on Big Mama’s Backyard Garden full-time in October 2022.

Today, Big Mama’s Calamondin Vinaigrette is stocked in Miami-Dade’s popular Milam’s Market and in other select gourmet stores throughout South Florida. It ships nationwide, has sold more than 15,000 bottles, and comes in two varieties: the original with canola oil and a newer avocado oil–based version. Shapiro says the latter is a result of customer feedback demanding a seed oil–free alternative. Both are vegan, gluten-free, and free of added sugars, artificial flavors, and preservatives.

than just a salad topper. Fans like to drizzle it on fish, marinate chicken with it, mix it into their deviled egg filling, and even splash it into cocktails. “It’s so versatile,” says Marks. “People are always telling us new ways they’re using it.”

Marks says the star ingredient is still that calamondin that her neighbor fatefully handed her so many years ago.

“It’s got this crazy sweet-sour duality that blows people away,” Shapiro says. “We use the juice and the peel.”

The result is a complex, citrus-forward dressing that’s way more

As the company grows—with plans to expand into food service and debut new flavors, all while staying family-owned—its mission remains simple. “We want to bring something honest, delicious, and homegrown to the table,” says Shapiro. Adds Marks: “This is about love, good food, and sharing what’s real.” (bigmamafoods.com) «

LIVE LIKE AN ICELANDER

AT ICELAND’S HOTEL RANGÁ, ANCIENT TRADITIONS, EPIC LANDSCAPES, AND MODERN NORDIC LUXURY COME TOGETHER FOR A TRANSFORMATIVE ESCAPE

Some trips are mere vacations, while others invite you into a different way of life. This is the case, if you let it be, when you visit Hotel Rangá (hotelranga.is) on Iceland’s southern coast.

Tucked between active volcanoes and glacial rivers, this remote retreat is more than a jumping-off point for hiking ice caves and chasing waterfalls: it celebrates

Icelandic culture both ancient and modern. Here, indulge in hot springs, cold plunges, and activities pulled from the pages of a Norse saga.

Ninety minutes from Reykjavík, Hotel Rangá is a cozy lodge nestled into a cinematic stretch of moonscape near Hella. Its continent-themed suites span Antarctica to Africa, while geothermal hot tubs @PAIGEDEAS/COURTESY OF HOTEL RANGÁ

and an on-site stargazing observatory align guests with the rhythm of the Icelandic countryside. Local artwork is highlighted throughout, even painted directly onto the walls. In season (typically late September to early April), it’s one of the best places to view the Northern Lights; the hotel has a dedicated wake-up call button you can engage should the luminary phenomenon appear while you’re sleeping.

Owned by Icelanders, Hotel Rangá is the ideal place to try on their longevity-boosting lifestyle. Jump-start your day with an icy dip into the Rangá River. Dine on proteinpacked fresh skyr and throw back a shot of cod liver oil (the mega-dose of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins A and D is an Icelandic health hack, benefiting heart, brain, bones, and eyes), then embark on any number of on- and off-property excursions the hotel can arrange.

Perhaps you visit Skeiðvellir’s Icelandic

Horseworld (iceworld.is) to ride a fivegaited, famously stocky Icelandic horse. They’ve been purebred in isolation since the Viking days, illustrating the island’s deep reverence for tradition. (Just don’t call them ponies.)

Or let Southcoast Adventure (south adventure.is) whisk you into the wilds for a day. Strap on crampons to hike the otherworldly Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Afterward, tread the famous black-sand beach and basalt rock formations of Reynisfjara, then feel the thunderous roar of screensaver-worthy waterfalls like Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Gljúfrabúi. Or book a buggy tour to rev things up on tundra-sand fields and see Gluggafoss waterfall in all its glory.

Refuel at Smiðjan Brugghús (smidjan brugghus.is) , a brewpub in Vík known for juicy burgers and small-batch beers. The hotel’s Rangá Restaurant also serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner grounded in fine,

locally sourced Nordic fare.

For a cultural deep dive, ask Hilmar from Try Adventure (tryadventure.is) to tour you around turf houses, waterfalls, fabled fountains of youth, and Arctic moss fields made for nature-napping. He’ll also cook you Icelandic hot dogs—with sweet brown mustard, ketchup, remoulade, and onions both crispy and raw—next to a river on his family’s ancestral lands.

The nearby ancient Caves of Hella (cavesofhella.is) present an unforgettable setting for dinner, a Hotel Rangá exclusive. Inside a series of mysterious sandstone caves—potentially carved by the Celts who inhabited Iceland even before the official Norse settlement of the ninth century—you’ll be served a multicourse Nordic feast by candlelight, a Viking banquet for modern times (read: lamb shanks minus the pillaging).

Back at the hotel, the curated-experience menu presents further immersion opportunities. Book a beer tasting (Icelandic brews paired with bites like lamb rillette ravioli and smoked duck breast with blood orange and brioche) or take part in offbeat offerings like a tattoo from a local artist, a poetry hotline,

or a book signed by a local author, a nod to the Icelandic tradition of Jólabókaflóð (the Christmastime “book flood”).

It may seem odd to order a souvenir in advance, but you’ll be glad you did. With at least four weeks’ notice, Hotel Rangá can arrange a personalized lopapeysa to be knitted by hand and awaiting your arrival. These wool sweaters are practically the national uniform; patterns are family heirlooms passed down over generations. At Hotel Rangá, the design is based on the original motif by the mother of owner Friðrik Pálsson, who grew up on a farm in northern Iceland.

While toasting the traditional way—hákarl (pungently ammonia-forward fermented shark) chased by a shot of brennivín (aptly nicknamed “Black Death”)—may be best left to the locals, should you give yourself over to Iceland, you’ll soon find yourself saying “Skál!” to the Land of Fire and Ice. «

SOUTHERN EXPOSURE

With Icelandair launching direct flights from Miami to Keflavík International Airport, Hotel Rangá is now just one flight and a scenic drive away. The route is available three days a week from October 26 through March. Spring for Saga Premium to be as comfortable as possible on the eight-hour flight. (icelandair.com)

Reset at the head or tail of your trip with a night at the 60-suite Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland, located less than a half-hour from the airport. The ultramodern pad has a subterranean spa, Michelin-starred dining, and private access to Iceland’s most famous attraction. A day or two in squeaky-clean, progressively green Reykjavík is also worth your while. (bluelagoon.com)

CRUISING Goes Colossal

Big-ship cruising just got even bigger. Meet MSC World America, the newest megaship from MSC Cruises and the first World Class vessel the Italian line has ever homeported in the United States.

Spanning 22 decks with room for up to 6,762 passengers and more than 2,100 crew, World America is nothing short of a floating city. It dwarfs many of its megaship

peers and invites travelers to lean into the adventure of getting lost—though its seven themed “districts” help make the sprawl more navigable.

While the ship still channels MSC’s European roots, the design and programming take a clear turn toward American preferences. There’s more action, more variety, and a lineup of onboard experiences that rivals the biggest resort ships at sea. But despite all this gravitas, World America hasn’t lost the sunsoaked glamour MSC regulars expect.

The ship itself is striking. The plumb bow rises straight from the waterline, while the Y-shaped aft spills onto the open-air World Promenade. This multilevel, city-square-style space invites guests to stroll, shop, and dine alfresco. For the bold, there’s no need to take the elevator—an 11-story dry slide provides a far more dramatic entrance.

MSC World America boasts 19 dining venues and 18 bars and lounges, including a few firsts. The Eataly at Sea restaurant is the only one of its kind, serving fan-favorite dishes and house-made pasta from an open kitchen. All-Stars Sports Bar channels the buzz of game day with massive TV screens, foosball tables, interactive darts, and classic pub fare. The Loft is a nightlife hub with dueling pianos, comedy sets, and sing-yourheart-out karaoke nights.

Entertainment swings big here—literally. The Harbour, a family-friendly outdoor playground high atop the ship, features The Cliffhanger, the first overwater swing ride at

MSC WORLD AMERICA BRINGS BIG THRILLS TO MIAMI YEAR-ROUND

sea. It suspends guests 160 feet above the ocean, commanding quite a few screams. There’s also a ropes course, a water park, and enough thrills to keep every adrenaline junkie (or brave parent) satisfied.

Inside, the three-level World Galleria bustles with bars, shops, and restaurants. Elsewhere on board, things don’t slow down: from more than 24,000 square feet of spa and gym space to acrobatic circus acts, the biggest magic show at sea, and a fullfledged casino. And for kids? MSC doubles down on its Lego partnerships, with parades, build stations, a dedicated Sportplex, and even a Lego Game Show for some lighthearted competition.

This state-of-the-art ship will sail year-round from MSC’s newly unveiled Miami Cruise Terminal—now the world’s largest. Designed by Arquitectonica, the soaring, four-level, halfa-million-square-foot terminal introduces biometric check-in and streamlined boarding tech, a major upgrade to the PortMiami experience. From here, MSC World America

will operate seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries.

Each sailing includes a stop at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, part of the Bimini chain in the Bahamas. Once an industrial dumping

ground, the island has been meticulously restored by MSC into a thriving marine sanctuary and private island playground. While its coral restoration efforts and new Marine Conservation Center add depth, the island still delivers all the hallmarks of a perfect port day: powdery beaches lined with lounge chairs, food trucks, shaded bars, and no shortage of tropical cocktails.

With World America, MSC Cruises hasn’t just launched a new ship; it has debuted an all-encompassing experience, from high-tech boarding in Miami to laid-back island time at Ocean Cay. But it’s the ship itself—with its scale, spectacle, and nonstop momentum—that turns the journey into the destination. (msccruisesusa.com) «

WHITE KNIGHT

MERCEDES-MAYBACH’S NEW HIGH-LUXE

SL 680 MONOGRAM IS THE BRAND’S FIRST-EVER TWO-SEAT CONVERTIBLE

You know you’ve ascended to the apex of luxury when your new car comes with bleach-white carpets the color of Chiclets.

The carpets of Mercedes-Maybach’s brandnew 2026 SL 680 Monogram Series, along with its leather seats, door panels, and steering wheel, are so searingly white that Ray-Bans should be standard-issue. In fact, there should be a cautionary dashboard sticker warning of the sullying effects of muddy Jimmy Choos or a Starbucks double espresso.

What’s equally interesting is that currently white is the only choice of interior coloring on offer for the first run of SL 680 Monograms. There are only two exterior colors as well: Red Ambience or glossy White Ambience, each with a contrasting Obsidian Black hood.

The noir bonnet comes embellished with a repeating pattern of Maybach’s trademark Double-M logo that, at first glance, resembles a Louis Vuitton Monogram handbag. As if that wasn’t enough, the blackonly canvas convertible top is also plastered with the logo. In the

words of Zero Mostel in The Producers: “When you’ve got it, flaunt it.”

This new SL 680 is Mercedes-Maybach’s first open-top two-seater. The brand has deemed the car its “sportiest and most extravagant” offering yet—one worthy of a quarter-million-dollar price tag. It’s closely based on Mercedes’ newest SL, particularly the SL 63 AMG. But, with its sharpened focus on luxury, comfort, and performance, it’s much more than a rebadged model.

For starters, it looks more imperious than a regular SL. Design changes include a fancier front end with a thin-bladed, illuminated chrome grille. There’s also a chrome-ringed lower bumper section with a honeycomb-like insert that’s actually made of Maybach Double-Ms. The new LED headlights boast inlays of rose gold. When it comes to the 21-inch forged alloys, buyers can choose between a striking turbine-style design or the more bodacious five-hole monoblocks of our test car.

Inside, the key differentiator between Mercedes SL and Maybach SL can be found behind the seats. The fairly useless rear pews have been replaced with a more practical flat shelf trimmed in crystal-white napa hide.

Pop the logoed hood and there, shoehorned in the engine bay, is the SL 63’s 577-hp 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. As in the Mercedes, it’s mated to a glorious 9-speed automatic and drives all four wheels.

Time to drop the top—a mere 15 seconds start to finish—and take to

the road. What is instantly noticeable is the smoothness and serenity of the Maybach’s ride. It has softer springs and dampers, as well as an exclusive Maybach Mode setting on the adaptive suspension menu. This softens the suspension, relaxes the throttle response, and adds a touch more lightness to the steering.

Yes, there’s still a Sport Mode that unleashes the Kraken and slingshots the Maybach from standstill to 60 mph in 4 seconds. But the focus here is on Teflon-smooth boulevarding.

To this end, engineers have come up with a special Maybach-exclusive exhaust with fiberglass baffles to lessen the V8 roar. There are also new engine mounts, insulated wheel wells, and a mountain of noise-deadening foam filling every crevice to transform this new SL 680 into a steeple of serenity.

It is such a lovely car to drive and surely the smoothest-riding SL ever. Yes, maybe it should have had the velvety 6.0-liter V12 power of Maybach’s S680 limo to make it truly special (Mercedes dropped the V12powered SL65 in 2011). Even better, an all-electric powertrain. But the

PAMPER

V8, especially with Maybach massaging, delivers towering performance that, at the touch of a button, can get close to full AMG-tuned SL 63 grunt.

Given the Maybach’s quarter-million-dollar sticker, buyer alternatives include Aston Martin’s wondrous DB12 Volante ($269,000), Bentley’s latest Continental GTC Speed Convertible (from $336,350), and Mercedes’ manic 805-hp SL 63 SE Performance (from $208,300). But when it comes to rarity, the Maybach and its ultra-white carpeting win hands down. Just remember to wipe your feet. «

DREAM BOAT

GRAND BANKS’ NEW GB62 COMBINES CLASSIC DESIGN WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY AND WORLD-CLASS SEAKEEPING

Grand Banks has come a long way since its beloved leaky-teaky, go-slow trawlers from back in the day. The classic 36, which first hit the water in 1965, and the iconic 42 remain two of the great longdistance family cruising boats. See them out on the water today and their upright bows, fishing-trawler lines, and molded, looks-like-wood, lapstrake hulls still garner passionate “oohs” and “aahs” from onlookers.

Fast-forward to 2014 and Grand Banks had one of those eureka moments when it acquired the Aussie boatbuilder Palm Beach Motor Yachts (named after a spectacular beach north of Sydney and not the town in Florida). That’s because the company came with its founder and head designer, Australian ocean racing legend Mark Richards, as part of the package. Since then, Richards has steered the builder on a stellar course, streamlining its Malaysian operation, introducing super-hightech construction methods, and expanding the range to nine models, from 54 to 85 feet.

Richards’ newest offering, the gorgeous Grand Banks 62, made its global debut at the most recent Palm Beach International Boat Show. Developed from the Grand Banks 60, the 62 isn’t just an updated version, but essentially an all-new boat that just looks the same. Those extra couple of feet enabled Richards’ computer software to lengthen the cockpit, stretch the hardtop, and create a three-stateroom, three-head layout below decks.

No, it doesn’t boast a trendy, cutting-edge design. You won’t find the huge hull-side windows or vast foredeck lounging spaces you get with so many Italian and French specimens. This is a true classic in the vein of Down East models from Hinckley, Hunt, Sabre, Bruckmann, and Shannon. What the Grand Banks delivers is an ocean-tough hull design with massive seakeeping capabilities, prodigious power with efficiency, and fuel reserves to go the distance. Not to mention a single-minded focus on

quality and exquisite craftsmanship.

As for that hull design, it features Richards’ V-Warp technology. This includes a bow that can slice through waves like a box cutter through butter, reduced drag and increased lift, and supersmooth running surfaces for increased speed and efficiency.

And it offers speed in abundance. The base engine package is a pair of Volvo D13 turbo diesels packing 900 hp apiece with shaft drives. They can push this 72,000-pound charger to a top speed of 30 knots with cruising at 27. Even at a still-zippy 20 knots, you should see more than 800 nautical miles of range from the 1,500-gallon tanks. Want more power? Check the options box for the 1,000-hp D13 Volvos with shafts, or there’s a pair of Volvo IPS 1,200 pod drives.

Step onto the fixed swim platform and into the cockpit, and the feel is very old-school. There are no drop-down side terraces, swiveling sofas, or fullwidth-opening glass doors into the salon—just a single door with a power-lowering window to open the galley to the cockpit. That cockpit, however, feels dance-floor huge and is perfect for alfresco dining.

Teak-treaded steps lead to the extended flybridge, with space for a 13-foot tender and a 1,000-pound crane to drop it in the drink. There’s a sun pad, an Lshaped dining area with an outdoor galley opposite, and a central helm.

Below in the sleeping area, there’s a roomy VIP cabin in the bow and the owner’s suite amidships to port, though it’s not full beam. The big innovation comes with the new third cabin to starboard. Perfect for kids, it has an en-suite bathroom, a single berth, and steps that lead down to a double bed. Yes, it’s compromised, with reduced headroom over the bed and too many levels. But it’s an accommodation bonus.

For this new 62 Flybridge (a Skylounge is an option), expect pricing to start at around $5.2 million. And while all Grand Banks are built in Malaysia, Floridians benefit from the company’s main U.S. headquarters being close by in Stuart.

This is one of my dream boats—one that can be handled by a couple, with serious offshore performance, comfort, and style. Grand indeed. «

ACES Serving up

Entrepreneur Wayne Boich has turned his passion for padel into another successful element of his business empire. Now the 305 might just be on the cusp of becoming the center of the sport’s universe.

Photography by Steven Martine

Businessman Wayne Boich is known around these parts for his savvy investments and his starstudded Art Basel bashes. But in recent years he has turned his passion for one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports—padel—into another successful business venture. With his Reserve Padel Club and his high-profile tournament, the Reserve Cup Series, Boich is methodically growing the game and its future, with no shortage of celebrities in the mix.

Yes, Inter Miami FC co-owner David

Beckham, Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen, and former Miami Heat player Jimmy Butler have taken to the sport, but Boich says they weren’t the focus of his business. It was really about giving anyone from any walk of life the chance to do something fun and healthy with others.

“I have a real passion for this sport, because I know that it breeds community and health and wellness,” says Boich, a former top-ranked junior tennis player and U.S. Open Junior Competitor. “I thought if I could create a company and then have one wing of that company be focused on the buildout of nice clubs in the right locations, then we could have something special that could be a focus of folks’ days, where they think, ‘I want to fit in two hours at Reserve today

and play a little bit of padel and hang out,’ whatever it may be.” Still, he admits the big names don’t hurt business. “Certainly, when you have celebrities who love it, it does push the needle a little bit.”

However, it didn’t take a celebrity to get Boich interested in padel when he first encountered it in 2013. There was just so much nuance to the game, he says. The courts

Wayne Boich presides over the padel courts at Reserve Padel, his new twostory premier club located at SoLe Mia in North Miami.

were smaller and enclosed in glass. Instead of smashing the ball across the net, players could lob it off the glass to keep opponents on their toes.

The timing of the encounter was fortuitous. Boich was having a new home built and had originally planned to include a tennis court on the property. But the promise of padel was just too alluring for him to ignore.

He scrapped his tennis court plans and opted for a padel court instead.

After Boich and his family moved into their new home, that court became the place to be. On any given day, Boich was there with the likes of former tennis great Andre Agassi, Beckham, or even Verstappen. When Butler came to the Miami Heat in 2019, he challenged Boich to a game, betting that he could

beat him. Boich was not about to back down from the 6-foot-7-inch forward’s challenge.

“I said, ‘Okay, then I’ll see you at the house tomorrow,’” Boich recalls. “So, [Butler] showed up to the house and we were playing with some pros, and he said, ‘Maybe I’m not going to take that bet.’ He had played a couple of times, but not much. Through padel, we started a friendship.”

Soon, Boich began bringing professional players to Miami for exhibitions, and those games drew larger and larger crowds. When COVID hit in 2020 and padel clubs began springing up locally, Boich decided to turn his passion into a business. Never mind that he already had other businesses, three kids, and an always-packed schedule. His mind was made up. In late 2022, he launched Reserve Padel, a top-of-the-line membership club offering courts, coaching, and community.

“There were a lot of reasons not to do this if you’re me—ranging from the businesses I already have, to the time it was going to take, the travel it would require, and having a fam-

ily at home,” Boich says. “But when you have an extreme passion for something and think you’re going to change the landscape of a sport, and you think of the position I’m in, the relationships I have, the passion I have for the game, I think I can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. There’s so much more to this for me than looking at a spreadsheet and saying, ‘Oh, is this going to be worth x or y in three to five years?’”

The bet seems to be paying off. At press time, Reserve boasts three locations in Miami and another at Hudson Yards in New York City. Boich says a second New York City location is set to open in 2026. Two or three others may follow suit, but Boich

won’t open a new club until he knows he can replicate to the letter what he has already begun. “We want to be able to do it right if we do it,” he adds.

Miami has been a great padel market, Boich notes, thanks to its diverse cultures. Good weather and fitness-minded locals have helped too. Kids are now flocking to the sport. Boich has certainly had a hand in this growth, not only in Miami, but elsewhere. This year, the Reserve Cup has evolved into a three-part, three-city series that includes athletes like Derek Jeter vying for victory.

Even more exciting, the local padel infrastructure Boich has built lured the world’s No. 1 padel player, Arturo Coello of Spain,

Reserve Padel’s 100,000-square-foot

SoLe Mia location includes four indoor and six outdoor courts, two pickleball courts, elevated viewing areas, and a health and wellness center. For those new to padel or looking to go pro, the location includes coaching and training programs led by the Juan Martin Diaz Academy.

Diaz, the club’s chief padel officer, was a dominant player for two decades, before eventually joining Reserve to help grow the sport alongside Boich.

top players had been training in the

to South Florida to train at Reserve Padel. Before Coello’s arrival, no top players had been training in the United States. Boich believes this could change the sport’s landscape and potentially make Miami the center of the pro padel universe. Until then, top athletes will continue to be among those playing at Reserve, talking big smack on tiny courts.

Padel101

“It never ceases to amaze me how much blind confidence superstar athletes have in their skills, and how they believe those skills translate from a basketball court or soccer field to a padel court,” Boich says with a sly grin. “I appreciate the excitement, enthusiasm, and vigor with which they compete, so I never want to dissuade them from continuing to focus on their goal of being a champion padel player. Unfortunately for all of them, they will never become a champion padel player until they get proficient enough to be competitive. They all talk.”

On and off the court, you can be sure that Boich will continue to give them something to talk about.

Padel seems to have infiltrated the public consciousness. But what exactly is it and how does it differ from other racquet sports?

Padel began in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1969. When a wealthy businessman named Enrique Corcuera learned that he didn’t have enough space on his property for a tennis court, he built a smaller one instead. However, he found that it was too easy to overhit balls during a match. Tired of the daily ball roundup, Corcuera surrounded the court with walls and opted for wooden beach paddles instead of racquets, which are more forceful. His international set of friends fell in love with the sport and brought it back to their home countries.

Today, padel can be played in pairs (which is most common) or one-on-one. Players hit the ball over the net, just like they do in tennis. The casual observer will note that the game largely plays out like a game of tennis and is scored in the same way too. Because the court is enclosed, players can also hit the ball after it bounces off a wall to keep it in play, just like you do in squash. Instead of serving overhand at top speed, you serve underhand. Players are also able to leave the court to play a ball if the court has exit gates and as long as the ball doesn’t bounce a second time.

dedi-

cated to offering

“The ability to really showcase touch and feel is important in the game, especially as you get better,” Boich says.

In padel, the courts are smaller, the balls are smaller, and the racquets (which have holes instead of strings) are too. While some players will wear tennis shoes, experts advise buying padel-specific shoes, which have more cushioning at the midsole. This will prevent strain to Achilles tendons, a common padel injury.

Much of the game vocabulary is the same as it is in tennis. However, two terms, Americano and Mexicano, are specific to the tournament format. The former involves switching partners and opponents every round so everyone plays against each other. The latter involves pairing opponents with the same number of points so matchups are equal.

“This is a sport where folks can get into it quickly and feel very athletic, very quickly,” Boich adds. “As you get older in life, the more you can feel athletic at anything you do, the more appealing it is and the more you’ll want to do it.”

THE RULES OF THE GAME

• Each point starts with a serve. The serve must always occur after a bounce and below the waist. The ball must cross to the opponent’s square, and players serve twice. The opponent can’t hit a volley when receiving a serve; the ball must bounce at least once first.

• After the bounce, the serve can touch the glass, but it cannot touch the side fence. Once the point begins, the ball can touch the fence.

• Any player in any area of the court can hit the ball. Like tennis, a player can only hit the ball once. Volleys are allowed as long as a player doesn’t invade the opponent’s side of the court.

• The ball can touch the sides of the court and the glass of the court. It can also bounce and leave the court and then re-enter (but only after a first bounce).

• The glass wall or other kind of wall can be used to return a ball—but not the fence.

• Players compete in six games to win a set, and a match comprises the best of three sets.

HOW TO SCORE

To score a point in padel, one of the following situations must occur:

• The opponent’s ball hits the net or another part of the court (wall, fence, spotlights, etc.) without the ball having previously bounced in the opponent’s court

• The ball bounces twice in the opponent’s side of the court

• The ball hits an opponent’s body directly

• The ball bounces in the opponent’s side of the court and goes out of bounds

• Accidentally or voluntarily, a player touches the ball more than once with the racket

LOCAL BITES

GABLES GOLD

Among chef Niven Patel’s current ventures, Erba might be his most compelling. Teaming up with Mohamed “Mo” Alkassar, a James Beard semi-finalist for Outstanding Restaurateur, Patel brings his Michelin cred and farm-driven philosophy to this Italian-inspired spot in Coral Gables.

Erba is rooted in tradition but blooms with Miami flavor. Ingredients from Patel’s Rancho Patel in Homestead (and other local farms, ranches, and waters) are transformed into dishes that feel timeless and thrilling. Start with the deceptively simple: petals of summer squash carpaccio topped with prosciutto, basil, and crisp sunchokes. Or the local lettuces: feather-light greens dressed in truffle vinaigrette and tossed with pine nuts and Asiago. It’s a salad that sounds straightforward but eats like a revelation. (In a decade-plus of food writing, I’ve never had better.)

Then come the pastas—housemade, seasonal, and impossible to choose from. Patel recommends a fourcourse pasta tasting for the table. On our visit, two standouts were the rigatoni with grilled artichokes, lemon, and Pecorino Toscano, and the pappardelle with confit duck and an orange and walnut gremolata. Each plate felt like a mini voyage through Italy, filtered through South Florida terroir and Patel’s exacting technique. For entrées, the filet mignon au pepe with rosemary and wild mushrooms melts on con-

tact. The grilled branzino—infused with Sicilian orange, wild fennel, and arugula—is a study in subtlety and balance. For dessert, the pistachio gelato hits a perfect salty-sweet-nutty chord. Seasonal specials like mango lassi semifreddo elevate Florida fruit to fine-dining glory.

On Wednesdays, Patel sweetens the deal with half-off wine bottles over $100. Or go farm-toglass with a lychee martini or the mezcal-forward Tall Grass, all made with fruit from Patel’s grove. As for the vibe? It’s warm, romantic, and quietly buzzy, with olive and maroon tones and an open kitchen humming in the background. In a city full of show, Erba is all soul and a complete immersion into Miami’s own authentic la dolce vita. (erbamiami.com) —Paul Rubio

Eataly Arrives IN AVENTURA

THE GLOBAL ITALIAN FOOD HALL LANDS IN THE SUNSHINE STATE WITH A 30,000-SQUARE-FOOT PLAYGROUND OF PASTA, PIZZA, WINE, AND MORE

With 14 North American locations (and more than 50 worldwide), Eataly has earned a reputation for turning the pleasures of Italian food into a full-blown experience. Now the brand has made its long-awaited Florida debut at the Aventura Mall, transforming a two-story space (formerly Forever 21) into a culinary hub that blends market, restaurant, classroom, and counter-service culture. It’s only about half the size of the 58,000-square-foot Flatiron flagship location in New York City, but the Aventura outpost still packs a punch with two sit-down restaurants, a cooking school, and more than enough counters and retail to make your head spin (in the best way). Here’s how to navigate it all like a pro. (eataly.com/us_en/ stores/aventura)

MERCATO DI EATALY

The retail area showcases the best of Italy, from pantry staples like dry pasta, coffee, and sweets to a wide range of fresh market goods including seasonal produce, meat, cheese, and made-in-house pastas. Roughly 80 percent of the imported jars and shelf-stable items hail straight from Italy, with recognizable names like Antonella and Giusti lining the shelves. The in-house line is equally impressive and often trumps big names. (For example, don’t expect to find Nutella here; Eataly has its own droolworthy, private-label hazelnut spread.)

Product knowledge runs deep. Ask any team member about a vinegar, olive oil, or jarred tomato product, and you’re likely to get a passionate, expert-level response. Frequent shoppers can take advantage of the Eataly Ambassador program, which offers perks and discounts. Look to the fridge sections for to-go lasagna, soups, sauces, tiramisu, specialty items like caviar and panettone, and a generous selection of salumi and formaggi. Also in the mix are fresh floral arrangements curated by local florists.

LA SCUOLA DI EATALY

Tucked just off the ground-floor entrance and adjacent to the art-lined escalators leading upstairs, Eataly’s cooking school is your first stop and the only part of the store at street level. In the spirit of Eataly’s “Eat. Shop. Learn.” ethos, this space hosts a rotating schedule of onehour classes, from wine tastings to raviolimaking to creating the perfect tiramisu. A full-time chef oversees the program, and classes are offered at approachable prices, making them accessible for both beginners and seasoned cooks.

EATALY VINO

The wine market at Eataly Aventura isn’t just well-stocked, it’s intentional. All 20 regions of Italy are represented—with five to seven bottles from each—and there’s also a Riserva room filled with rare Barolos, Barbarescos, and collector-level gems. Many of the

bottles here aren’t available anywhere else in Florida or even online. According to Mauro Maugliani, the in-house sommelier and wine store manager, Eataly often secures entire productions from boutique Italian vineyards, making these labels truly exclusive. Guests can purchase a bottle and enjoy it on-site in the adjacent seating area for a modest corkage fee ($15), or bring their selection into one of the in-house restaurants. Private tastings in the Riserva room can be arranged with advance notice.

COUNTERS + CAFFÈ

If you’re stopping in for a quick bite or a coffee fix, the upstairs counter scene delivers. There’s Lavazza Caffè for espresso drinks, La Pasticceria for cakes and croissants, Il Gelato for housemade gelato and sorbetto, and Pizza alla Pala for Roman-style pizza served by the square slice. The Panini counter features focaccia sandwiches and stuffed creations, while the salumi and formaggi counter tempts with a wide selection of Italian meats and cheeses, the most popular of which is the Moliterno al Tartufo Nero, a rich, truffleinfused sheep’s milk cheese. Nearby, the mozzarella bar offers freshly pulled cheese made throughout the day. A dry-aged meat counter rounds out the experience for those craving something savory and substantial.

THE RESTAURANTS

Upstairs, you’ll also find two sit-down restaurants. At nearly 300 seats strong, La Pizza & La Pasta serves up two of Italy’s most beloved dishes with a menu that spans the peninsula, spotlighting regional recipes and premium ingredients. Expect Neapolitan-style pizzas, house-made pastas, and a steady buzz of energy from open to close.

A few steps away, Il Pastaio di Eataly (meaning “pasta maker”) brings the art of fresh pasta to life. This live-production counter features daily demonstrations by master pastai, shaping everything from orecchiette to pappardelle. With 90 seats and front-row views of the pasta magic, it’s part restaurant, part culinary theater.

Family Fusion

AT SAKANA NIKKEI, TWO COUSINS INVITE DINERS INTO A FAMILY STORY TOLD VIA THE BOLD FLAVORS OF THE JAPANESEPERUVIAN CULINARY TRADITION

If a family that cooks together stays together, then Kiomi Castillo and Rosemary Batzel are in it for life. The Miami-based Peruvian cousins have channeled their shared heritage, deep gastronomic roots, and a serious love of seafood into Sakana Nikkei, an intimate, family-run restaurant that’s drawing foodies from the 305 to downtown Fort Lauderdale.

Born from the Japanese diaspora in Peru, Nikkei cuisine brings together two of the world’s most dynamic food traditions. At Sakana, that translates to vibrant, umami-packed plates that hit with freshness and finesse—from artful tiraditos and citrusy ceviches to hot izakaya dishes, makimonos, and larger plates like tender short ribs and lobster arrizotado (think: tangy lobster risotto).

“This restaurant is a reflection of our journey, our heritage, and our love for hospitality,” says Batzel. “We’ve created a space that not only celebrates the artistry of Nikkei cuisine but also honors the strong, independent women who have shaped our careers.”

Castillo adds, “We’re excited to bring this vision to life and introduce our family’s legacy to Fort Lauderdale.”

That legacy includes a menu stacked with standouts, like the hamachi tiradito—thin yellowtail slices dressed with ponzu, yuzu, serrano, orange, and tobiko—and the craveable causa frita, a crispy mashed potato dumpling topped with shrimp, ají amarillo,

The Sakana Nikkei experience extends to the cocktail list, too. House creations nod to Peruvian ingredients and Japanese techniques. Here are two to try.

and a bright acevichado sauce. Sushi lovers will want to dive into the Sakana roll, which layers fried lobster jalea, kani, avocado, and cucumber with a drizzle of the house Sakana Sauce. For indecisive diners or seafood maximalists, the Sakana Tower is a showstopper—stacked with oysters, lobster ceviche, sashimi, nigiri, mussels, and leche de tigre.

As for the setting? It’s seductive yet inviting, overlooking Fort Lauderdale’s New River. Inside, a 360-degree bar anchors the dining room, where cascading red florals, sleek black tables, and gold-accented wallpaper create an atmosphere that’s equal parts drama and elegance. Rooted in heritage and driven by heart, Sakana Nikkei is more than a great night out; it’s a celebration of culture, family, and the flavors that connect us all. (sakananikkei restaurants.com)

Viral Bites and LOCAL LOVE

Michael Zein may have only begun creating food content on Instagram and TikTok in 2024, but food has long been a part of his life. “I’ve always been the guy who eats 24/7 and appreciates the art of a good dish,” says Zein, who adds that he grew up idolizing culinary personalities like Anthony Bourdain, Guy Fieri, Adam Richman, Andrew Zimmern, and Jon Taffer.

Now, as the man behind Mike is Eating, he’s sharing his own perspective on the South Florida food scene, spotlighting viral bites and showcasing the efforts of local restaurateurs. And as his “Holy, holy” stamp-of-approval catchphrase has become enough for some of the spots he posts about to catch fire on social media, Zein says he understands the impact that food influencers can have on the industry at large. “A lot of times people forget how much their words can impact someone’s life,” he notes. “One word can make or break a business. That responsibility isn’t lost on me.”

We recently caught up with Zein to learn more about his social media presence and his favorite bites in Miami-Dade County. (@mikeiseating) —Mary Murray

LIGHT UP YOUR FALL EVENINGS WITH THE AMBER SMOKE

As September progresses along Florida’s coast, the days remain warm, with gentle breezes hinting at the approaching fall season. It’s the perfect time to escape to The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort, where the new BH Prime steak house has debuted the Amber Smoke cocktail. Made with smoked cinnamon mezcal and house-made cinnamon syrup, the Amber Smoke has a warm depth complemented by hints of sweetness from smoked herbs and charred pineapple. A flaming cinnamon stick finishes the drink, releasing enticing aromas and adding a theatrical touch. Pair it with BH Prime’s signature boneless rib eye smoked tableside. It’s a combination that echoes the cozy ambience of a beach bonfire, making it a sophisticated celebration of South Florida’s subtle seasonal transition.

WINE WISDOM

WANT TO GO FROM WINE SNOB TO WINE SMARTY-PANTS? OENOPHILE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND IN THE MAGIC CITY.

I’m often asked for tips on learning about wine. My stock answer—only half-joking—is that the best way to understand wine is to drink plenty of it. But we all know that there’s more to it than that, because wine is wonderfully complicated: it’s a mix of history, geography, people, and culture all poured into a glass. Immersing yourself in that can be incredibly rewarding.

The most formal way to study wine is by taking a professional course. The Florida Wine Academy, which is based in South Miami but offers classes statewide, is the leading provider in Florida. It offers certifications at a range of levels from organizations like the WSET (Wine and Spirits Education Trust) and Wine Scholar Guild. These courses are great for providing you with structured information, and frameworks for tasting and studying wine.

It’s also worth getting to know local independent retailers. Many of them—like 305 Wines and its Florida Wine Academy—host classes or informal tastings. Become a regular customer, let them know what you like, and soon you’ll be among the first to learn about exciting tasting opportunities.

I love Wine Blast by Susie Barrie and Peter Richards, as well as Miami-based pods by Lyn Farmer (Postcards in a Glass) and Shawn Zylberberg (Zonda Wine Podcast).

Take this study tip: approach wine with curiosity and an open mind. Its diversity is what makes it so interesting. Every bottle has something to say about where it comes from and who made it. The more you taste, read, and ask questions, the more you’ll start to connect the dots. And while there’s always more to learn, don’t forget to have fun. Wine is made to be enjoyed. The best way to learn is to stay interested—and keep tasting. (winesbysarah.net)

HOME

FROM CITY TO SHORE, THE FINE ART OF MIAMI LIVING

INTERIORS

DESIGNED FOR LIFE

The grandest spaces in a home are often the most overlooked. That’s why designer Beatrice Pila-Gonzalez of Miami’s B. Pila Design Studio strove to make every inch of a 10,000-square-foot contemporary home in Pinecrest both livable and inviting.

“My philosophy of design is always about creating environments that are activated by those who live there,” says Pila-Gonzalez. “It’s never about creating a showroom. It’s about creating a lifestyle.”

The designer activated her plan for this home in the great room, a space that deserved to be the heartbeat of the house. To achieve this, the design team placed a bar unit along the wall and close to ample seating. “We all socialize around food and drink,” says Pila-Gonzalez. “Wet bars in living room spaces bring people over.” In addition, having a game table front and center “brings people in and gives them a reason to use that room,” she notes.

Nearby, a dining table stands ready for family meals and dinner parties. “In typical interior design realms that would be a faux pas, but sometimes it’s good to break the rules,” Pila-Gonzalez explains. “I believe you can have form and function and activity and enjoyment all together.”

The home’s beauty comes from a calming, monochromatic color scheme, which doesn’t settle into the typical white-on-white approach found in many contemporary spaces, but delves into warm neutrals and wood tones. The homeowners collect art, much of which is brightly hued, standing out against the muted backdrop.

“With this project, I really wanted to make sure the clients felt comfortable and used every space,” says Pila-Gonzalez. “It was about listening to what their life is about and making sure that their spaces are supporting that for them.” (bpiladesign.com) —Kelley Marcellus

PUMPKIN SPICE and Everything Nice

WARM UP YOUR HOME WITH FRESH FALL VIBES

With the advent of autumn upon us in South Florida this month, you won’t see a color shift in our local foliage. But that doesn’t mean you can’t bring the change of seasons into your home with a sensory refresh. Whether you’re layering a room with throw pillows and blankets or adding fragrant fall scents, try these simple and stylish ways to spice up your home this season. (alenacapradesigns.net)

HARVESTHUED HARDWARE

SWAPPING OUT DECORATIVE HARDWARE CAN GIVE YOUR FURNITURE OR CABINETRY A SIMPLE SEASONAL UPGRADE. THINK ABOUT BRINGING IN KNOBS OR PULLS FINISHED IN TONES OF COPPER, WARM BRASS, OR EVEN A BOLD POP OF BRIGHT PUMPKIN ORANGE OR SOOTHING GREEN SAGE.

Pumpkin PALETTES

Pumpkin-spiced hues can be easily paired with neutrals like cream, beige, greige, or taupe. Accenting your home with earthy paint tones like sage, olive, cinnamon, or mustard can round out a rich fall color scheme. Some of my favorite pairings include rust with olive, pumpkin with cream, and terra-cotta with taupe.

SPICED

SANCTUARY

XLighting a group of candles in soothing scents like pumpkin spice, apple cinnamon, vanilla, or cedarwood can usher autumn in via scent. Add a plush blanket (such as Hermès’ Avalon throw) to instantly

throw) to instantly make your space cozy for fall.

AUTUMNAL ACCENTS

Layering in textures is a chic and easy way to capture the essence of fall in your home. Consider enhancing your neutral sofa with accent pillows in rich fabrics such as velvet, wool, suede, or linen. It only takes a few key pieces like these to refresh the color palette and update the entire feel of your space. Changing up accessories and coffee-table displays with fall-inspired items like vases, candles, greenery, and trays can make a big difference. Look for items with natural finishes or woven textures to offer extra depth. For flooring, go with rugs in natural fibers like jute or sisal that reflect an autumnal vibe.

ON THE RECORD WITH...

DONAE BURSTON X

There’s a reason why Donae Burston named his wine brand La Fête (French for “the party”): he’s determined to bring everyone—not just wine snobs—to the tasting table. After pivoting from a career in IT to a side gig in nightclub promotions, Burston worked his way up the chain of the alcohol industry with brands like Heineken, Moët Hennessy, and Champagne Armand de Brignac (owned by none other than music mogul Jay-Z). Today, this Miamian is at the helm of his own brand of wines, led by his popular La Fête du Rosé. We caught up with him to learn more about the secret to his sweet success. (lafetewine.com) —Kr isten Desmond LeFevre

My full name is… Donae Burston. I live in… Miami. I grew up in… Baltimore, Maryland. I came to Miami when… I was 31, from New York City. I couldn’t take the winters anymore. When I was a kid, I wanted to... travel the world and be on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous I started my career as… an information technology consultant with Pricewaterhouse Coopers in their health care management division. I got interested in the wine and spirits industry when... I went to a Tanqueray 10 launch party in Atlanta in 1999. I had never been to a marketing/launch event that was a full-on party with artists performing, etc. I knew right then that I wanted to work in that industry. My first La Fête launch was a rosé because… rosé holds a special place in my heart after celebrating my thirtieth birthday in Saint-Tropez and drinking rosé the entire time. Rosé is more than a summer wine to me because… it is the most versatile wine varietal of them all. It pairs well with so many different types of food, and it’s just fun! Other than Champagne, name another wine that gets people excited or makes them smile when you pull out a bottle? La Fête rosé got a big break… during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was featured on the Today show and CNN. Sales skyrocketed. From there, we started receiving requests from wine shops across the country. Offerings in the La Fête line include… our flagship rosé, our 90-point-rated white blend La Fête blanc, and our small-production red blend that is very lush and can be served chilled. A common misconception about my job is... that all the travel is fun. Most people don’t realize the toll it takes on your body and family. Sometimes I wake up in hotel rooms not knowing what city I am in that day. But I wouldn’t trade this entrepreneurial journey for anything. One question I get asked a lot is… “How did you do it?” To which I answer, “I never thought that I couldn’t do it.” On an average day, you’ll find me… up at 6 a.m., taking a moment to meditate and think,

taking my son to school, then hitting the gym before diving into my day of meetings with my team, distributor sales calls, or hitting the streets to visit accounts and buyers. The toughest part of my job is… managing people and finding good talent. What brings me great joy in my job is… changing the narrative on what people think about rosé wine and when and where you can drink it. My brand gives back to the community by… supporting two organizations: The Roots Fund, which looks to open doors in the wine industry, and All Abroad Org, which takes kids from underserved and underrepresented communities on their first international trip abroad. Being a Black-owned wine brand means… just that the owner of the brand is Black. No different than Moët being French-owned or Chobani being Turkishowned. It is not a descriptor of the brand or a brand attribute. The quality of the wine is what matters most. Whenever someone tells me they want to be in the wine industry, I tell them… it’s not as glamorous as it sounds. Go work in a wine shop, for a distributor, or for a brand to see what goes on behind the scenes. If you’re going to pour me a drink, make it… La Fête, of course! If I am not having La Fête, it’s a mezcal margarita.
