THE FASHION EDIT AROUND TOWN

ROMAIN MAURICE

Fashion and philanthropy—with plenty of flowers mixed in—were the theme of Splendor in the Garden at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, which I attended a few weeks ago. The afternoon honored Miami icon Gloria Estefan, paired with a Neiman Marcus–produced fashion show.

14

Spending time with our cover girl—and Aventura Mall head stylist— Kimmie Sussman opened a whole new level of access. While I didn’t buy anything—this time!—I definitely have my eye on several Givenchy handbags.

Miami has never been a place for playing it safe, especially when it comes to fashion. In the 305, style is bold, bedazzled, barely there, and meant to turn heads. Basic? Never. Too loud? Sometimes. But then there are the women who nail it—effortlessly, instinctively, again and again. Our main feature, “Women of Style,” celebrates five Miami women who dress with confidence, personality, and intention. Writer and fashion connoisseur Erin Michelle Newberg did a fabulous job curating this group and conducting interviews that are as intimate as they are funny, revealing the women behind the wardrobes. The cover shoot with Kimmie Sussman, photographed on location at Aventura Mall, was a blast. It’s not every day you’re given the run of a luxury mall, shooting from the grand courtyard and the impeccably merchandised Hermès storefront to inside the chic Givenchy boutique. With Miami’s social season in full swing, the past few weeks have brought a whirlwind of fashion shows, black-tie galas, a celebrity-soaked horse race, and a garden party—all requiring unique (never on repeat) outfits. Thankfully, I now have five new fashion advisors in my group chat. This issue also delivers a high-fashion moment: 10 pages of Spring 2026 collections from Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, and Oscar de la Renta, photographed beautifully by Gabor Jurina. And guess what else is trending? Mah-jongg. I’ve played a few times myself, and while it’s engaging, it’s also—let’s be honest—pretty hard. Writer Sara Liss makes sense of the game, delivering an insider’s look at the buzzy scene fueling Miami’s mahj mania. I also want to call out that we are in the thick of “Best Of” voting. The finalist round runs March 9 through April 13, and your voice matters. Cast your votes at aventuramagazine.com, and support the businesses and people that make our community shine. Results will be revealed in our August issue.

CARNIVAL SEASON A SPRING TRADITION RETURNS, SERVING UP RIDES, INDULGENT BITES, AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT

COURTESY OF THE GREATER MIAMI CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU, MIAMIANDMIAMIBEACH.COM

For generations of South Floridians, springtime nostalgia smells like funnel cake, sounds like a midway barker, and looks a lot like the Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition. Known simply and lovingly by locals as “The Fair,” it is where first roller coasters are conquered, goldfish are won and lost, and oversize plush prizes become carseat trophies. It’s a uniquely Miami rite of passage, one that somehow feels frozen in time even as the city around it keeps evolving.

That sense of tradition returns in full force for the seventy-fourth edition of The Fair, open on select dates from March 12 through April 5 at the fairgrounds in University Park near Westchester. More than 80 rides run the gamut from pint-size Kiddieland classics to major thrills like the Mega Drop and observation wheel. The games still tempt with flashing lights and near-miss basketball shots, while more than 100 food vendors push the boundaries of carnival indulgence with fried, stuffed, and over-the-top creations, spanning giant turkey

legs, corn dogs, deep-fried pickles, guava and mango candy apples, and Krispy Kreme doughnut burgers. Beyond the midway, youth achievement remains at the heart of the experience, with student performances, agricultural showcases, and creative exhibits taking center stage. Add live tribute band concerts (included with admission) and the return of the autism-friendly sensory room, and The Fair once again proves why it remains a shared memory machine for Miami families year after year. MATCH-READY LOOKS FOR THE MIAMI OPEN The Miami Open is as much a fashion spectacle as it is a tennis showdown, and the 2026 edition is shaping up to be no different. Running March 15-29 at Hard Rock Stadium, the tournament will once again bring the world’s best players, buzzy crowds, and plenty of see-and-be-seen moments to Miami Gardens. Between day sessions in the sun and cooler night matches under the lights, what you wear matters almost as much as who is serving. Here are three brands with strong local tennis ties. FITNESS + FINANCIAL GAINS Miami-bred and community-driven, Fitness + Financial Gains feels tailor-made for the Miami Open crowd. Founded by Jessyka Castillo, the brand blends performance-ready workout sets with street-smart versatility. Pieces come in bright hues and inclusive sizing from XS to 3X. Plus, limited-run drops mean you are unlikely to spot your outfit twin in the stands. (shopffgains.com)

Founded in Miami in 2010 and unapologetically bold, this women-led activewear brand was built on the idea that tennis and golf apparel should perform on the court and green while turning heads off it. The line regularly features vibrant colors, energetic prints, and silhouettes that move easily from match play to streetwear. ART MEETS SPORTS As Miami’s sports calendar hits full throttle, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) will display “Get in the Game: Sports, Art, Culture” March 19 to August 23. Timed with the Miami Open, Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, and the FIFA World Cup, the exhibition positions the museum as an artsy crossroads where competition, creativity, and international audiences will converge. Promising more than 100 works by artists from around the world, the exhibition will blend contemporary art with iconic sports history. Highlights include works by Ernie Barnes, alongside a film by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno that follows soccer legend Zinedine Zidane through a single match in real time. Historic memorabilia deepens the experience, from vintage Nike sneakers to McLaren Racing steering wheels, underscoring the unique through line between design, performance, and fandom. Immersive installations invite visitors into the arena, showcasing that sports are more than games— they are stages where art, culture, and collective energy can play together. (pamm.org) —J.S.

THREE NEW OPENINGS TO ADD TO YOUR NIGHTLIFE ROTATION

COURTESY OF THROW SOCIAL

Miami’s nightlife and entertainment scene is as eclectic as it is ever-changing. From next-level live music to immersive social playgrounds and a historic revival, these three recent openings show just how broad— and exciting—the Magic City’s definition of “going out” has become.

THROW SOCIAL

Throw Social Miami has transformed Wynwood’s former Oasis site into a 35,000-square-foot, indoor-outdoor playground that leans into Miami’s love of high-energy socializing. LED-powered games, luxe lounges, VIP cabanas, five bars, and a massive courtyard anchored by a towering video wall give the venue its distinct vibe. Live DJs and music set the pace, while chef-driven bites keep things fueled. (throwsocial.com/miami)

Now open inside the Arlo Wynwood, Midline Miami has arrived with serious intent. The 10,000-squarefoot, two-story venue was built with an obsessive focus on sound, giving artists and audiences an elevated live music experience. With room for roughly 1,200 people, the space bridges the gap between an intimate club and a full-scale concert hall. Early bookings signal its range, pulling in indie, hip-hop, and electronic talent including Neko Case and Hawthorn Heights. (midlinemiami.com)

JAM ARENA JAM Arena gives new life to the historic Miami Jai Alai venue inside Casino Miami. The renovated space seats 1,500 and hosts everything from live music and comedy to sporting and cultural events, all staged on a restored jai alai court. Timed with the site’s centennial, JAM Arena is pure Miami nostalgia with modern production, proving that some of the 305’s most exciting new venues come with a rich past baked right in. (jamarena.com)

MIAMI LOVES WHISKEY International Whiskey Day (March 27) hits a little closer to home in Miami thanks to Tropical Distillery and its hometown-pride pour, Twin P Whiskey. Owned by former NFL All-Pros and twin brothers Mike Pouncey and Maurkice Pouncey, the distillery is on a mission to claim its place as Miami’s distillery while crafting spirits that reflect Florida flavor and swagger. Twin P Whiskey channels the brothers’ respect for Tennessee whiskey, aged 53 months in char No. 4 barrels for a smooth yet bold profile. Notes of caramel, vanilla, toasted oak, and warm spice are layered with sweet corn, honey, and a subtle rye kick. Cheers to Miami-made ambition in a glass—available at more than 500 local liquor stores. (tropicaldistillery.com) —J.S.

Q&A

Living History AT 99, COCONUT GROVE NATIVE THELMA GIBSON CONTINUES A LIFETIME OF SERVICE AND LOCAL LEADERSHIP BY JESSE SCOTT

A nurse, civil rights icon, and Coconut Grove trailblazer, Thelma Gibson has spent nearly a century fighting for dignity, access, and opportunity in her community. Born and raised in the historically Black Bahamian town of Coconut Grove and shaped by segregation-era barriers, Gibson transformed personal adversity into a lifelong mission of service. Her recent ninety-ninth birthday doubled as a fundraiser for the Thelma Gibson Health Initiative (TGHI), the organization she founded to provide underserved Miami residents with housing, health, and critical resources. The celebration raised more than $70,000 toward a permanent TGHI home in Coconut 22

Aventura: You recently turned 99. What are some of your goals for the year ahead? Gibson: Remaining healthy and making it to 100 is my biggest goal. This means taking life one day at a time and resting more often. Fundraising for our new land and house that we’re working to build via my nonprofit, the Thelma Gibson Health Initiative Inc. (TGHI), is also another big goal for myself and my family in 2026.

What is something most folks don’t know about you? I’m from Coconut Grove; I grew up there, went to grade school there, but upon graduating high school and college, I couldn’t get the nursing job I wanted because I was a Black woman. This really motivated me to dedicate my entire life to fighting for equality and civil rights. Additionally, my hometown of Coconut Grove was originally a predominantly Black Bahamian town inhabited by Bahamians who migrated from the Caribbean in the 1800s and built many of the first houses and communities in Coconut Grove, while coexisting with fellow Native Americans. Coconut Grove is commonly known as “the little

Thelma Gibson (pictured today and during the early years of her nursing career) is a local civil rights icon, whose legacy of service and advocacy continues to resonate across generations.

Bahamas” in the Black Miami community that remains there because so many Bahamians first lived here in the 1800s and 1900s and established and built the city. This is something that is often lost in history books but is important local Miami history that I’m a part of. Other fun facts: I was the sixth of 14 children born to my parents in Coconut Grove. Family and community are really important to me. The Thelma Gibson Health Initiative has been a beacon of hope for so many in its first 25 years. How are you hoping the organization grows in the years ahead? We’re so excited to continue fundraising and ultimately build an office and house in Coconut Grove for our local community and disenfranchised locals who need a place that is safe and offers a variety of resources to help them. TGHI offers a variety of programs for individuals. As for your broader legacy, tell us what you most want to be remembered for. Helping others. Celebrating community. Standing for equality and overcoming adversity. I refused to be defined by prejudice or people telling me “no.” Women and Black Miamians alike—anyone, for that matter—can do anything they put their mind to and take action to. One backstep, “no,” or mistake doesn’t define you, and there are resources, people, and programs at organizations like TGHI here in Miami that can provide help and a shoulder to lean on. «

A NIGHT ON THE RIVER Aventura magazine hosted its “Meet the Editor” party at Kiki on the River, where the Greek-inspired hot spot set the scene for an evening of Miami glamour. Golden Goat Caviar elevated the affair with a gourmet caviar station, while Champagne flowed against the backdrop of the Miami River. The restaurant buzzed with energy as Miami socialites and movers and shakers gathered to fete the magazine and celebrate its new editor in chief.

STYLE A FAMILIAR RING Calmi ring ($80), Calmi, mycalmi.com Every evening, I slide a rose gold– colored Calmi ring—said to combine acupressure and magnetotherapy—onto my pointer finger, hoping to improve my night’s rest. Its mere presence reminds me to take a deep breath, and perhaps that is all I need to sink into a deep sleep. —Gaylene Salomons, contributing editor

THE EDIT

Everyday Rituals

ELIXIR OF LIFE Matcha set ($130), Fellow, fellowproducts.com I recently traded my afternoon coffee for an afternoon matcha, preferring the subtle invigoration and calm focus of green tea to get me through the inevitable midday slump. Just the act of making matcha is calming—forcing me to take a break from my screen and center myself in the moment. This simple yet sophisticated set from Fellow not only looks great on my counter, but it helps me make the perfect matcha latte every time. —Mary Murray, executive editor

OUR EDITORS SHARE THE USEFUL TOOLS, COOL FINDS, AND CHIC ACCESSORIES THAT MAKE EVEN THE SMALLEST MOMENTS FEEL SPECIAL JANE SAYS Jane-a-Day: 5-Year Journal with 365 Witticisms by Jane Austen ($18), Penguin Random House, penguinrandomhouse.com For a daily dose of prudent counsel, I open this gilded-edge book. Each page—one for each day of the year—includes space for journaling, as well as pithy quotes from the novels and private letters of Ms. Austen, offering instruction and amusement in equal measure. —Jane E. Enos, contributing editor

FULL CIRCLE Three Kings All Weather Bangles ($125 for set of three), BuDhaGirl, budhagirl.com If a morning ritual sets the tone for the day, it’s no wonder I zip around like a dervish (thanks, Nespresso). On weekends, I embrace a quieter, gentler routine that sometimes involves these fun “ritual” bangles. The idea is to stack them, setting an intention or repeating an affirmation for each one you slip on. Every tinkle throughout the day is a reminder of whatever you want for yourself. —Daphne Nikolopoulos, editorial director 34

EYE SPY CL Curio 7x21 binoculars in Burnt Orange ($999), Swarovski Optik, swarovskioptik.com My first (and favorite) thing to do every morning is check out the endless parade of wildlife at the water’s edge in our backyard. At any given moment, it’s possible to spot roseate spoonbills, great herons, wood storks, ducks, turtles, and more. This year, I’m considering upping my binoculars game with this super-light pair with state-of-the-art optics. What better way to view the “greatest show on Earth”? —Allison Wolfe Reckson, contributing editor

REST & GO Infrared PEMF Go Mat ($699), HigherDose, higherdose.com Being an editor means a lot of sitting. That’s why this mat has become an essential part of my at-home wellness routine—a builtin pause during otherwise nonstop days. The warmth is deeply soothing, and the subtle PEMF energy leaves me feeling relaxed. I use it to unwind at night, and on especially busy days, I’ll place it on my chair to get the benefits while working. —Jacquelynn Powers, editor in chief

We spring forward this month, trading an hour of sleep for longer days and more sunlight. (A bargain, if you ask me.) As we move our clocks ahead, our biology adapts to the seasons and responds to changes in daylight. Additional light exposure improves our mood, metabolism, and energy. But how we live affects us just as much, if not more. Spring is an ideal time to take stock of what does and doesn’t support us. In lieu of spring cleaning, here is your guide to a thoughtful seasonal edit.

HOME • Swap synthetic candles for stovetop simmer pots. Instead of artificial, endocrine-disrupting fragrances, opt to simmer herbs and citrus peels in a small pot of water. • Trade Teflon pans for cast iron or stainless steel. Traditional nonstick coatings can release PFAS (“forever chemicals”). Cast iron and stainless steel are time-tested, toxin-free alternatives. • Nix fluorescent lighting in favor of warm lamp light or candlelight at night. Fluorescent lighting emits rapid invisible flickering and small amounts of UV radiation, which can strain the nervous system and disrupt circadian rhythms. • Eliminate conventional cleaners and use a vinegar, citrus peel, and baking soda mix. Many conventional cleaners rely on harsh chemicals and

Ingredients (makes 4 servings) 1/3 cup chia seeds 2 tsp. matcha powder 1 1/4 cup almond milk 2 tsp. maple syrup 1 tsp. vanilla extract

V Whisk together the chia seeds

and matcha powder until there are no clumps. Add the milk, maple syrup, and vanilla extract and whisk until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for a minimum of 4 hours. After the first 30 minutes of refrigeration, mix to distribute seeds and prevent clumping.

FOOD • Exchange ultra-processed protein bars for boiled eggs and yogurt bowls. Protein bars are often made with highly processed ingredients. Whole-food proteins, like eggs and yogurt, digest easier, are more bioavailable, and provide longerlasting satiety. • Cut down on grains and load up on vegetables. Lighten your glycemic load while increasing micronutrient variety by swapping rice for cauliflower rice and pasta for spaghetti squash or zucchini noodles. • Swap sugary condiments for mustard, vinegar, or homemade sauces. Most condiments sneak in sugars and flavor enhancers. Acid-forward options like mustard and vinegar add brightness without the hidden ingredients. • Put down the electrolyte powders and reach for coconut water with unrefined sea salt instead. Added sugars and artificial flavors are common in electrolyte powders. Unrefined sea salt provides natural sodium and trace minerals, while coconut water adds potassium and natural sweetness. LIFE • Replace Takeout Fridays with Farmers Market Saturdays. App-based takeout is convenient but impersonal. Connect with your food and those who grow it at a local farmers market. • Switch from a phone alarm to natural light. Sudden, aggressive alarms can spike cortisol first thing in the morning. Instead, wake gently with sunlight. • Say no to over-supplementation and yes to whole foods. Clean out your supplement graveyard and let food do the heavy lifting. Two Brazil nuts have roughly 100 percent of the daily recommended value (DV) of selenium. A 3.5-ounce salmon fillet delivers the DV of vitamin D. A single gold kiwi packs 200 percent of the DV of vitamin C. • Trade mindless snacking for afternoon tea. Tea naturally contains L-theanine, a compound that boosts relaxing alpha waves and supports neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.

RE-DEFINING LUXURY REAL ESTATE For the past two decades, BH Group principals have been actively involved in numerous significant real estate transactions and developments, leveraging strong connections to unveil exclusive opportunities for investors.

Liat and Isaac Toledano are the co-founders of BH Group, one of South Florida’s most accomplished family-led real estate investment and development firms headquartered in Aventura for more than 20 years at the City National Bank of Florida building, which they own. Working alongside industry partners including Related Group, Lennar, Kolter, American Landmark, and PEBB Enterprises, they are behind a wide range of upcoming luxury residential projects such as The Residences at Six Fisher Island, Greenview at Presidential Estates, W Pompano Beach Hotel & Residences, and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, West Palm Beach. BH Group recently expanded its Aventura footprint with the acquisition of the Sterling Aventura senior living community, now being reintroduced as AHAVA Senior Residences at Aventura. The Toledanos have built a reputation for combining strategic vision with steady execution, particularly in navigating complex development environments. BH Group’s work spans luxury residential properties, prime land holdings, office spaces, and mixed-use assets across South Florida. The firm currently oversees more than 5,600 residential units across 35-plus active developments.

In 2025, BH Group closed more than $300 million in transactions. With longtime ties to Aventura, the couple is actively engaged in the local community. They participate in civic initiatives, maintain close relationships with city leadership, including the mayor and commissioners, and work to ensure their projects align with the city’s character and long-term priorities while supporting efforts that enhance quality of life. To date, BH Group has completed thousands of residential units and more than 2 million square feet of commercial and retail space throughout South Florida. Family shapes both their work and perspective. As parents of eight children and grandparents to one, the Toledanos bring a multigenerational perspective to development, emphasizing continuity, livability, and lasting value. After more than two decades in Aventura, Liat and Isaac continue to grow BH Group as one of South Florida’s leading real estate development firms while remaining firmly rooted in the community where the company began.

ish moose meatballs so good, you may just return twice. Convince your dining companion to order the öländska kroppkakor—a beloved potato dumpling dish with mushrooms, browned butter, and lingonberry—and share. When playtime calls, hit Stockholm highlights like the world’s oldest open-air museum, Skansen (skansen.se), or the Vasa Museum (vasamuseet.se), which houses the only (almost) fully intact seventeenth-century ship that has ever been salvaged, a 64-gun warship that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. As much as Stockholm proper has to offer, there’s a gem on the outskirts that’s worth the train and taxi. The original yoga influencer, Rachel Brathen—better known as Yoga Girl to her 2 million Instagram followers—opened Ala Gård (instagram.com/ala_ farms) last summer, a sweet spot for fika, the popular Swedish version of a coffee or tea break with something sweet. Go to dine, shop, greet the cows and sheep (and maybe even Brathen and her family), or just read a book on a blanket in the grass, assuming you’re visiting around Sweden’s Midsummer.

If, like a savvy Euro traveler, you plan to take the über-clean, über-convenient SJ train (sj. se) to your next stop in Oslo, then the Nordic Light Hotel (nordiclighthotel.com) is an excellent home base. It is nestled around the corner from the train platforms, making arriving, departing, and exploring the city easy. The hotel

Stockholm and Surrounds Begin your journey in Sweden’s refined capital. In fact, go straight from the plane to anywhere with a cappuccino and kanelbullar, a traditional Swedish cinnamon bun. Aptly nicknamed “the Venice of the North,” Stockholm is built across 14 islands connected by bridges where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. Between the striking architecture and famously fashionable locals, it’s a city to be strolled on foot, ideally along the abundant waterfront. The best place to start is Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town. The city’s original settlement hearkens back to the thirteenth century, with cobblestone streets that wind through ocher buildings dating to the Middle Ages. It’s easy to while away hours here, ducking into small boutiques, rambling the squares, or stumbling upon pocket restaurants like Augustas Folksalong (instagram.com/augustas. folksalong), which serves authentic Swed-

Oslo Another hotel conveniently situated next to the central train station, Thon Hotel Opera (thonhotels.com) is perfect for a short stay in Norway’s cool capital, especially if your main goals are to dine on fresh Norwegian salmon (a must) and visit the iconic Oslo Opera House (operaen.no) and the Deichman Bjørvika library (deichman.no/bibliotekene), both of which are just across the street. While the oldest and largest public library in Norway features architecture by Lundhagem Arkitekter in collaboration with Atelier Oslo, the real draw is inside—and that includes the fascinating Future Library

(futurelibrary.no), which is equal parts public art, silent contemplative room, and literary time capsule. It contains manuscripts by authors like Margaret Atwood that will remain unpublished for 100 years, not to be read until 2114. Museums, fortresses, and parks also abound in Oslo, but the best adventures await on the other side of a series of short flights by tiny Widerøe airline (wideroe.no). Lofoten Islands There’s a reason the Lofoten Islands, a remote archipelago above the Arctic Circle in far-northern Norway, top many a travel-inspo vision board; the area offers a ton to do in a stunning setting complete with fishing villages, dramatic mountains, and waters that range from deep navy to so clear blue they look Caribbean in parts. While wintertime sees the area blanketed in snow, during the summer and early fall, visitors can hike, kayak, and even surf in relatively mild temperatures. Cod fishing is another unique Lofoten activity, as is witnessing the famous midnight sun phenomenon from late May to mid-July. You can even golf during this unique time at Lofoten Links (lofotenlinks.no). Easily one of the most mind-blowingly beautiful places to putt, Lofoten Links is ranked 66 on Golf Magazine’s list of the top 100 courses in the world and open

Another Lofoten must is the Brim Explorer Trollfjord cruise (brimexplorer.com), where sighting white-tailed sea eagles is somehow topped by the main event: the fjord itself. The four-hour cruise brings passengers all the way into the narrow, steep natural wonder on a hybrid-electric boat built just for sightseeing. The magnificent views cement once and for all what you already suspected: visiting Lofoten is well worth the lengthy trip north. «

GENERATIONAL JUMBY STEFANO CANDITO

RARE IS THE PRIVATE ISLAND THAT CATERS TO BOTH COUPLES AND FAMILIES WITHOUT COMPROMISE BY PAUL RUBIO

Jumby Bay Island off Antigua has always operated with intentional duality. Its recorded history dates to the seventeenth century, when the island was gifted to the Duke of Carlisle and later passed through successive colonial ownership. For centuries, it has existed as both retreat and residence. Today, as part of the esteemed Oetker Hotels collection, the island runs two distinct experiences in parallel. One is concentrated on Jumby Bay Beach, where couples luxuriate steps from the water, mov-

ing easily between sea, shade, and dining at low-profile, sea-facing cottages. The other stretches across the island’s perimeter, where villas and estates are designed for families and multigenerational groups, prioritizing space, staffing, and the logic of staying put rather than passing through. The island’s resort side lives entirely across the breathtaking blues of Jumby Bay Beach. All 40 rooms and suites are clustered on this long, west-facing stretch of sand. Buildings are single-story and restrained, so the beach—not the architecture—sets the tone. Rooms open directly toward the turquoise sea, with high-beamed ceilings, expansive terraces, outdoor soaking tubs, and private pools in the upper categories. You don’t cross the island to begin your day; instead, the beach

nearly begins where your room ends. Dining on Jumby Bay Beach is purposefully concentrated. Breakfast and dinner happen at The Veranda, where Parisianperfect pastries change daily and themed nights lean into Antiguan and West Indian cooking. Genny’s Bar, a thatched hut just off the sand, keeps Taittinger flowing throughout the day, with small plates designed for eating between swims (try the jerk shrimp tostada). The Sand Bar fills the remaining hours with sushi and light intercontinental fare. Minibars are well-stocked and replenished daily, reinforcing Jumby’s “unlimited island inclusions” approach (in other words: top-notch all-inclusive). Overall, this westerly side of the island promises primo resort-style trappings in close reach—and minimal decision-making. The island’s second identity begins beyond the perimeter of Jumby Bay Beach. Along secluded swathes and coves sit 56 private estates and villas, the majority of which are available to rent. This is where Jumby becomes a functional family destination.

These are fully staffed residences with chefs, housekeepers, and laundresses; private pools and direct beach access are standard. Families operate independently while still being privy to the island’s restaurants, activities, and shared spaces. The clearest expression of this is the Lost Puffin estate. Designed on a single plane overlooking Pasture Beach—a known hawksbill turtle nesting area from June through November—the seven-bedroom masterpiece sleeps up to 20. Every bedroom faces the same view, and each has its own outdoor shower and soaking tub. A pizza oven and generous communal areas facilitate group living without forcing it, allowing grandparents, parents, and children to share space without fragmenting into separate wings. Island-wide programming is available to all guests, but it runs especially deep for families. Children sail Optimists, Lasers, and catamarans through an on-island sailing school, while a marine biology program focuses on coral regeneration and sea turtle conservation. Numerous tennis courts spread across the property eliminate competition for court time between players of different age levels. Bikes and golf carts give all generations (including older children) independence while keeping everything contained. Between these two sides lies the island’s connective tissue. The interior remains deliberately pastoral, with rolling meadows home to Persian black-headed sheep descended

from stock dating back to the 1700s. They appear everywhere—from slippers and tote bags to do-not-disturb signs—functioning as a visual shorthand for the island itself. Nearby, a historic sugar mill still stands, a reminder that Jumby’s current operation grew out of something far more utilitarian. Then there’s the Estate House, a restored nineteenth-century plantation manor that now serves as a flagship restaurant. In this vein, attention to detail shows up often throughout a stay. Upon check-in, guests are greeted with Antiguan pineapples in nearly every form imaginable: pineapple smash punch, upside-down cake, skewers, pâte de fruit, and baskets of the dainty micro-pineapples. At night, hand-painted shells depicting island life are placed on pillows at turndown. None of it is framed as a moment. It simply happens, every day. Recent updates uphold both island identities. A rebuilt fitness center and refreshed spa—focused on massage rather than elaborate menus—reopened in early 2026, while Little Jumby, a neighboring islet reached by boat, adds a beach club escape where guests can spend full days swimming, eating, and staying within Jumby’s orbit. Beyond its natural beauty, Jumby Bay Island offers something rarer: clarity. Cou-

ples get a concentrated beach experience without friction. Families get space, staff, and systems that support how they actually travel. Managing both without compromise is uncommon for a private island. Yet Jumby does it—decisively. (oetkerhotels. com/hotels/jumby-bay-island) «

Escape from it all with Stay Ombi’s floating bungalows. Savor the surroundings in bed or on your deck, before exploring by kayak or paddleboard.

EXPERIENCE A KEYS-BORN TWIST ON THE OVERWATER BUNGALOW BY PAUL RUBIO

three thatched-roof structures emerge—solarpowered, widely spaced, and drifting gently with the tide. Each rests on its own floating platform, wrapped by a deck that opens to the water on both sides, creating an immediate sense of being untethered yet secure. Inside, the layout is compact but intentional. A king bed faces a broad picture window, with a daybed tucked just beneath. A concealed television lowers from the ceiling at the touch of a button, and air-conditioning powers on when the Keys heat builds. Behind the headboard, you’ll find kitchen essentials and more: a sleek Frigidaire, microwave, Keurig machine, and storage shelves. The bathroom setup includes a spacious shower and a separate water closet. Once you settle in, the natural world takes over. Accordion-style doors fold back to dissolve the barrier between indoors and out. The surrounding water is shallow and still. Mangrove BURLAP & BLOSSOM, COURTESY OF STAY OMBI

While you’ll still need to venture to distant atolls for the classic overwaterbungalow fantasy, the Florida Keys now offers a beguiling taste of that dream—no passport required. Stay Ombi, a trio of stand-alone suites rising from the shallows off Key Largo, trades tropical extravagance for something more restrained and closer to nature. Think of it as a pared-back spin on the far-flung floating villa: unconventional, design-forward, and unlike anything else stateside. The experience begins with a brief boat ride from Snook’s Bayside Restaurant in Key Largo (MM 99.5). In minutes, the waterfront bustle disappears, replaced by mangroves and calm, emerald water. As the shoreline fades,

52

islands shelter manatees, cormorants skim the surface, and dolphins appear with little fanfare. Every direction feels cinematic, wild, and full of possibility. A ladder drops straight into the water for quick dips or relaxed floating, while paddleboards and kayaks make it easy to wander through the environs and meet the local wildlife. Though Stay Ombi provides continental breakfast items, coffee pods, and the option to pre-stock groceries, it isn’t a traditional resort. Bring your favorite snacks and drinks— and let the rest unfold. Dinner from Snook’s can be delivered by boat nightly, and even en-suite massages can be arranged. When in doubt, a simple text to the Stay Ombi team results in anything from extra towels to resupplies of ice. High-speed Starlink keeps you connected, though the setting makes screens feel almost irrelevant. Overwater excitement notwithstanding, Stay Ombi isn’t trying to mimic a destination like Bora-Bora. Its appeal is rooted in its unspoiled authenticity—water stretching out in soft greens, magnificent mangroves housing both land and sea creatures, and the sensation of being marooned in a secret corner of the Florida Keys. It’s overwater glamping with a sense of place, a gentle reminder of how satisfying life can be when you allow nature to set the pace. (stayombi.com) « JOSH ADAMS, COURTESY OF STAY OMBI

HIGH ROAD

GREEN HORNET CHEVROLET’S 2026 CORVETTE E-RAY CONVERTIBLE IS A 655-HP HYBRID BUNDLE OF JOY BY HOWARD WALKER

I’ve never considered myself a Corvette cognoscente. I still get flummoxed by the alphabet soup of designations, model numbers, and engine differentiations served across the car’s near-75-year history. However, over the decades, I’ve driven my fair share of America’s favorite sports car. So, excuse me for being so bold, but I’d like to nominate the 2026 Corvette E-Ray convertible as the finest, most appealing, most accomplished, most fun-driving, and simply the best ’Vette yet. Believe me, it’s that good. How come? It is the very first Corvette with handling-enhancing all-wheel drive and an electrified powertrain. Yes, it’s a hybrid, though not like a Prius. An electric 54

motor at the front combined with a hairychested 6.2-liter V8 in the back delivers a Kentucky Derby–like 655 horseys. When spurred, this corral of stampeding ponies can giddy up the E-Ray from standstill to 60 mph in a butt-clenching, gut-squeezing, eye-watering 2.5 seconds. That’s as fast as a 1,001-hp Bugatti Veyron. Yet the real appeal of the E-Ray is that it’s not some hardcore supercar with the ride quality of a Publix shopping cart. This is a rocket ship suitable for daily driving, with magical steering, thrilling yet easy-to-tame handling, intuitive controls, and not one but two trunks for Trader Joe’s runs. The price is also pretty attractive. While $108,600 for a base E-Ray may not sound like a bargain—especially compared to the $70,000 starting price of a regular C8 Corvette Stingray—consider its competition, including the McLaren Artura (which starts at around $248,000), Ferrari 296 GTB ($340,000), and new Lamborghini Temerario ($390,000). Want more power in your Corvette? You could opt for the track-focused 670-hp Z06 (priced from $120,000) or the brutal 1,064hp ZR1 (from $185,000). But unless you really want to go to Top Gun flight school to extract their ultimate capabilities, their talents are going to be wasted. That’s why the E-Ray is such a gem. Slide behind that funky but functional squared-off steering wheel, ignite the big V8, listen to that minor nuclear explosion as it fires up, and prepare for a shock-and-awe feeling akin to inserting your finger in a light socket. If you prefer not to wake your neighbors at 6 in the morning, you can engage Stealth mode and the E-Ray will use battery power to take you as far as 4 miles at speeds of up to 45 mph in zero-emission silence before engaging the big V8. For grand touring, keep the drive-mode selector in Tour and the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic will shift with the smoothness of a Swiss watch movement. Dial Sport and everything gets ramped to 11. The mindboggling off-the-line acceleration, the midrange thrust, the way the car can slingshot out of a curve or on-ramp? Just amazing. That’s the benefit of having that electric motor on the front axle. While the E-Ray has been around since

2023, it got a welcome facelift for 2026 that addressed most of the mid-engined C8 ’Vette’s original cabin quirks. Gone is the silly fighter-jet row of switches down the center console, replaced by a meaty passenger grab handle. Climate controls are now proper analog switches, lined neatly beneath the center screen. Like the base Stingray, the E-Ray is offered in 1LZ, 2LZ, and 3LZ trim levels as well as a

targa-topped coupe or power-folding convertible. Our tester was a 3LZ convertible costing $128,545; with $28,350 worth of options (you’ve got to love all that carbon-fiber trim and wheels), it topped out at an eye-watering $155,895. Not sure about that Kermit-like Roswell Green metallic paint though. While loyal Corvette purists might argue that the standard targa-roofed version is all you need, I think the convertible’s power-

folding hardtop is worth every dime of its $4,500 asking price. It lowers in around 16 seconds—from the key fob—and at speeds of up to 30 mph. With the glass wind deflector raised, turbulence in the cockpit is almost nonexistent, even at triple-digit velocities. It all adds up to one of the most appealing sports cars out there, and arguably the best all-around Corvette ever. You can even boast to friends that you’re driving a hybrid. «

PURSUIT’S BRAND-NEW S 388 SPORT LUXURY CENTER CONSOLE OFFERS SPACE, GRACE, AND A LOT OF PACE BY HOWARD WALKER

«

Who didn’t love the 2006 tearjerker The Pursuit of Happyness with Will Smith playing an aspiring stockbroker down on his luck? Spoiler alert: it’s a true story with a very happy ending. Pursuit Boats in Fort Pierce should take inspiration from that movie title when it comes to marketing its new S 388 Sport center console. Maybe call it the Pursuit 388 of Happyness. That’s because any day spent aboard this well-thought-out, 41-foot, fisher-cum-luxury family cruiser is guaranteed to be a happy one. How could it not be? Feel the thrust of triple Yamaha 450 XTOs, watch the speedo climb to the 388’s top speed of around 60 mph, enjoy the smooth, wave-slicing ride 56

from its enhanced hull design. The S 388 replaces Pursuit’s successful S 378 Sport introduced in 2020. To come up with the redesign, the company called in a bunch of S 378 owners to create a wish list of changes and improvements. At the top of the list was a bigger, more versatile cockpit. Pursuit’s designers answered with a rejigged cockpit that’s 8 inches longer than before. It features a cool outdoor kitchen—nestled in a new space behind the helm seats—with an electric grill, sink, and fridge. There was also a request for a little more storage throughout the boat, working off the premise that a boat, any boat, can never have enough places to store “stuff.” Pursuit respond-

HAPPY PLACE

ed with a staggering 93 percent increase. Now pretty much every surface has a cubby, locker, drawer, cutout, cupholder, or bin. Take the rear-facing cockpit lounger. The seat back is split into three, with each section flipping down to reveal storage for all sorts of fishing gear. On the transom, there’s now a huge chill box with a 30-gallon live well alongside. And right there is what Pursuit calls “the most comfortable fold-away cockpit seat in the industry.” How come? As you fold down the seat, a connected cushioned backrest

rises. Very clever. Now insert the pedestal table in the cockpit floor, power open the canvas sunshade, and you have a wonderful dining area that works together with that rear-facing cockpit lounger. The entire cockpit is also fully air-conditioned. When I toured the boat at last fall’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, this was the area where I could picture myself hanging out. That, or the helm, obviously. This is a terrific space, with three-across seating and a center steering position, a redesigned dash with 16-inch Garmin screens, and fabulous quality and attention to detail. Stroll around the extra-wide, extra-deep walkway to the bow, and there’s a big lounger and wraparound seating, all upholstered in diamondquilted marine vinyl. For overnights on the hook or just escaping the midday sun, the S 388 has a surprisingly roomy cabin with a towering headroom, a galley with twin fridge-freezers, a 24-inch television, a spacious wet-room head, and two mini-sofas that convert to a double bed. And, as with the rest of the boat, there’s storage everywhere.

One other impressive feature is the amount of light flooding the cabin, largely a result of the windows on either side. Look out and they face similar-size, temperedglass hull windows that give a view of the water. The base price of the S 388 Sport is just under $1 million. Want to personalize your craft? Pursuit’s website lists every option, along with the price. I spent an hour speccing out my dream S 388—I love that Artic Blue hull color—though I could have saved time by just checking all the boxes. A $2 million loaded S 388, however, might be excessive. This is a great-looking center console, with tons of style and fantastic lines, plus those signature hull windows, swept-back windshield, and oversize hardtop. Whether you’re fishing or cruising, here’s a boat that is definitely going to help you in your “pursuit of happyness.” «

WOMEN OF MIAMI’S MODERN MUSES: Five of the city’s most fashionable women leading with confidence, edge, and polish

Style

By ERIN MICHELLE NEWBERG Photography by ROMAIN MAURICE

The Fashion Authority

KIMMIE SUSSMAN, Head Stylist at Aventura Mall

Raised in her parents’ New York City boutique, where she spent her formative years in fitting rooms surrounded by well-heeled women, Kimmie Sussman emerged as both a stylist and tastemaker—a ’90s club kid with a creative yet elevated point of view. From Manhattan to Santa Monica— where she took up retail buying in the early 2000s—this traveling rock star wife and mom relied on her instinctive eye and industry fluency to launch her own personal styling business. After relocating to Miami from London in 2011, this savant of shopping stepped into the role of head stylist for Aventura Mall’s styling program. With a fashion-forward résumé built over more than two decades, Sussman’s career highlights have spanned red-carpet moments and personal wardrobing for celebrities like Serena Williams, Hailee Steinfeld, Alex Rodriguez, and Mariah Carey. 58

Personal style: It’s mood-based, but I lean toward an edgier aesthetic. Shoe of the moment: My kitten heels by Awake Mode because they are half professional, half rocker, with a slice of comfort. Daily uniform: Oversize pants, kitten heels, and a fitted top with a cute belt. I’m inspired by: Traveling to cities and exploring the people in those cities. The streets of London are my favorite. I am impressed by how they wear all those colors together and it works. I never leave home without: My vintage jewelry from my grandmother. People would be surprised to know I love wearing: Akira, because it reminds me of Patricia Field and my life as a ’90s club kid. In fact, I need to text her! You won’t catch me in: Birkenstocks. Miami style: I am glad to

see Miami style evolving. We also need to work to be extra creative here because of the weather restrictions. Vintage or new: I have a love affair with both. Currently, I’m embracing: Burgundy and brown. Favorite event to get dressed for: My flights out of here! Travel style: I like to look pulled together, so I just got a great trench from Coperni at Blended in Aventura Mall with a pair of oversize shades from either Bottega Veneta or Saint Laurent. Most-loved item in my closet: My 1994 Karl Lagerfeld Chanel maxi bag.

Dress, belt, earrings, and rings by Givenchy; boots by Schutz; bracelets by Blended. All available at Aventura Mall.

SY OF KARIN

A ROSENDO.

A multifaceted force, Karina Rosendo is a wife, mother, and University of Miami alum whose background in journalism informs both her seductive yet refined style and her entrepreneurial drive. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, she began her career in broadcast journalism at CNN in Atlanta before returning to Miami to work as a producer for Univision, where she helped shape digital storytelling around some of Latin culture’s most iconic moments—from morning shows to major live broadcasts like the Latin Grammys. In 2018, Rosendo launched Stitch Lab, building a powerful platform for LATAM designers and creatives in the Magic City, followed by ShakeUp, a production company producing immersive fashion, music, and multimedia experiences for global brands including YouTube and Meta. Deeply committed to giving back, Rosendo partners with Style Saves and Bazaar for Good, using fashion as a vehicle for impact while continuing to champion emerging talent from Latin America.

VINTAGE OR NEW: A mix of both. It’s more about the fit than the brand, but I love a good vintage Chanel piece. 60

Personal style: Practical. During the day, I don’t have much time, so it needs to be comfortable. I love sets because they make my life easy, like skirts and tops or suits. Ensembles always work. Style evolution: Day-to-night looks have become a no-brainer. You won’t catch me in wild heels or anything risky anymore, which is how I used to dress when I started out. Now I go for what looks good on me and my body. Most memorable outfit I ever wore: Aye, chica. It was my Monique Lhuillier wedding dress! I was so thin and I looked like a dream. Style icon: Carolina Herrera is impeccable. Local style inspiration: Jenny Lopez. I swear by: Classic brands like Lanhtropy from Uruguay. They offer elevated basics, and I discovered them when they came to Stitch Lab. Because I love sets, especially linen ones, another ideal brand is Adriana Fernandez as her designs take me from morning to night. Lastly, there’s Jenny Polanco from the Dominican Republic. She passed away during COVID, but her daughter took over, keeping the integrity and legacy alive. Her linens are the best. People would be surprised to know I love wearing: Fine jewelry. I was never an accessories woman except for studs and my diamond ring, but my latest addiction has led me to stacking rings, necklaces, and bracelets. I work with Wish Fine Jewelry, a Brazilian company, and it’s very me. You won’t catch me in: Sweatpants. Miami style: Color and fun. I just attended the Pegasus Fashion Show, and it showed me that it’s okay to have fun with fashion. Trend of the moment: Barrel jeans are my thing. They’re a dying trend, but I love them. Favorite event to get dressed for: Stitch Lab has an annual multiday event in the Design District. We’ve been doing it for the past nine years and it's just my favorite. I celebrate the LATAM fashion world and all our talents. It’s become the quintessential fashion event to shop directly from the designer. This year, it’s March 13-15. Designers to watch: Las Sureñas, who have been working with me for nine years, have now exploded—they sell in London and Dubai. Flabelus, the slipper brand by Beatriz de los Mozos, is amazing. She’s brilliant and every shoe is named after a book she read, and I love that sentiment.

The Modern Maximalist JENNI COBA, CEO of The Coba Collection

I took a liking to fashion: I was a late bloomer, and I started paying attention to fashion in college. I was more into interior design, and it all started with rearranging my mom’s furniture. Looking back, it all goes hand in hand because I always loved being surrounded by beautiful things. Personal style: Very girly, eclectic, and even eccentric, yet true to myself. Comfort is important because when you feel good, you will shine in whatever you’re wearing. Style evolution: Always evolving. I have found that I look more disheveled these days with the more kids I have! As the family has grown, I don’t have as much time to focus on myself. I prefer for them to look great, and I just pull my hair back. I never leave home without: My wedding band. You won’t catch me in:Tory Burch shoes, a logo belt, and Crocs. Watch or jewelry: I’m more of a jewelry person, but I do love my Cartier Baignoire diamond bangle watch and my vintage bracelets from Vivid Diamonds. Vintage or new: I certainly appreciate the style and craftsmanship of vintage, but my closet is largely new. Fisher Island style versus Mountain Lake: Two totally separate looks. In Miami, I love that we are not afraid to be ourselves. We wear what makes us feel wonderful, we celebrate each other, and everyone is unapologetic. In my other home, it’s more conservative, very old Florida, with old-school manners. At the core, my style is ladylike, so that sets the precedent. And despite the fact that everyone thinks I’m always in a ball gown, I’m a mom of four, so I’m generally in athleisure. Style icons: Cate Blanchett and Truman’s Swans are my obsession. First couture piece purchased: A vintage zebra coat with feathers. I have repurposed it so many times, even as a dress. My mantra: Give me athleisure or give me couture. Athleisure staples: Monochromatic looks from Lululemon. When I throw on a great sparkly sneaker, it can elevate a boring look. Mom style: If I have a PTA meeting, I’ll wear a classic shift and kitten heels. But once you have kids, there are things you can’t wear—like off-the-shoulder dresses when you’re bending over. When you’re in mom mode, it changes your aesthetic for a few years. Gala world: I love dressing for the Vizcaya Ball and Vizcaya Preservation Luncheon. They provide the opportunity to really go for it, and I love seeing everyone’s interpretation of a theme. I’ve sat on both committees and co-chaired both events, so it’s meaningful to spend time in the house that gives so much back to the city. Most memorable outfit I ever wore: Wow—so many. But it may be the Vizcaya Preservation Luncheon when I dressed as Sherlock Holmes. I wore a vintage monocle, Fendi dress from my archive, Fendi boots, and a bartending hat from Houses & Parties. It was a winter look with a twist of masculinity. 62

COURTESY OF JENNI COBA

A modern-day Peggy Guggenheim, Jenni Coba juggles building high-end homes alongside her husband, Josh, with philanthropy and being a hands-on mom to their four children. From her active life on Fisher Island to her getaway villa in Mountain Lake, Florida, Coba has never missed a beat in the style department. Whether she’s renewing her vows in St. Barth in a House of Gilles couture gown or entertaining at home in her signature collection of caftans, turning heads is simply part of the equation. Hosting is her forte, especially if there’s a theme, like her overthe-top cowgirl birthday party with a mechanical bull in Allapattah. Add a sense of humor and a showstopping wardrobe, and the result is unmistakably Coba.

ADDICTED TO: Valentino because Alessandro Michele has no fear and his looks are whimsical.

TARA BENMELEH, Founder of Espiritútara

Whether she’s designing jewelry and dream catchers, serving tea in a private ceremony to her friends or clients, or galivanting to art fairs across the globe, Tara Benmeleh is a guru of all-things hippy chic. The Miami-born visionary is involved with various art organizations, like the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), and has an art-filled home on the outskirts of the Design District. Her style goes from sleep to street, including summers spent in Ibiza, Spain, clad in a vintage Hermès pareo and rocking unruly blond locks. For art fairs, she wears The Row and Rick Owens. Fashion has always been part of her world, and alongside her husband, Jack, and sons, Max and Bodhi, she’s dancing her way through life in understated designer frocks like no other. Packing for art fairs: Although I was a stylist in my younger years, I believe in bringing a different stylist friend to my closet where we play dress-up together. I appreciate perspectives because it’s a trusted eye to confirm or deny choices. Luggage of choice: My black Rimowa. Style evolution: I value luxury pieces more than fast fashion now. I’ve also realized that fewer prints and more neutrals work best for me, as do classic styles with playful shapes. My style isn’t one-dimensional, but neutrals always win. Current favorite outfit: A khaki cotton dress from The Row. It’s easy, flowy, and I love it. Daily uniform: An oversize dress in a natural fiber like linen or cotton in black, beige, or white. I can’t get enough of: The Row, R13, Elder Statesman, and Rick Owens. I’m inspired by: My friends. I have beautiful friends with incredible taste. I never leave home without: A protection necklace I got while working at Simons and Green. It was a legendary boutique on Sunset so many years ago. It’s a scapulario with two angels that protect me. Bag must-have: My black Hermès Mini Kelly and Mini from Balenciaga. Don’t be surprised: I don’t wear underwear with my jeans. You won’t catch me in: Polyester. Jewelry of the moment: A gold link necklace from Tiffany. Miami style: Is improving. My kids’ style: I shop at State of Kid. The selection is amazing. I used to buy designer clothes for my eldest son, Max, but now it’s brands like American Vintage, Aviator Nation, Bobo Choses, Elwood, H&M, and Mini Rodini. The weather here dictates: Smarter choices because it matters. I always ensure nothing under my arms is too tight and nothing is too clingy. Loose fibers are the key. Vintage or new: New. Trends: I don’t follow trends, which is why I call people who know what’s happening. Most memorable outfit I ever wore: My Rick Owens Prong dress, which I just wore to the Bal Harbour Shops’ sixtieth anniversary celebration.

GALA OF CHOICE: The ICA Gala because people wear real fashion. It’s quiet luxury done right. 64

Why I am always perfectly put together: Growing up in Puerto Rico where the island is so small, you run into people everywhere you go. This made me accessory-ready at all times. Latin culture made me feel comfortable with color and being adventurous. Personal style: Timeless and chic, but edgy. I love classic pieces with a modern twist that’s reflective of what’s trending in the moment. Style evolution: I’ve attended Paris Fashion Week twice with Balmain and New York Fashion Week with Givenchy. Those collaborations pushed me out of my comfort zone and inspired me to take my look to the next level. Accessory of the moment: My Balmain Anthem work bag. I wear it every day. My Celine sunglasses are also a daily essential. Athleisure staples: Alo works well for me as the materials and cuts give me confidence. And Lululemon pants are always a win. I always add jewelry, cool sneakers, a great day-to-night bag, and incredible sunglasses because they change everything. An easy look to pull off: A crisp white button-down and black trousers or high-waisted darkwash Levi’s with sandals, sunglasses, and my bag. People would be surprised to know I love wearing: Fashion Nova. It’s my hidden secret. Favorite watch: A gold Rolex. You won’t catch me in: Low-rise jeans. Favorite event to get dressed for: Paris Fashion Week. The shows, the dinners—it takes me two months to plan my lineup. I pack: Light! I never check a bag. I plan day-by-day outfits using a collage, so there’s no overpacking. Favorite local boutique: Big Drop NYC. Most memorable outfit I ever wore: A three-piece tweed Balmain suit. It was black-and-white tweed and a true moment in my life.

What do you get when you mix a Puerto Rican and an Irish American? In this case, a redheaded bombshell. The definition of trendy with a twist of classic, Caroline McDonald’s flawless head-to-toe look is courtesy of her grandmother, who was impeccable and elegant at all times. Whether McDonald is on a run clearing her mind in her favorite Alo athleisure or working in the luxury hospitality space where her days often span from morning well into the night, the go-getter never has a hair out of place. Sleek and seductive, her figure allows her to shine in her beloved Balmain garments and accessories, guided by a mantra that there should always be effort behind an outfit. After all, why not?

I’M OBSESSED WITH: Balmain. Their style is my style.

f it feels like everyone in Miami is suddenly playing mahjongg, it’s because they are. Moms share meetup invites at school drop-offs. The posh members’ club at The Moore hosts a weekly open play on Monday evenings. The funky ceramics collective Ocisly introduced a make-your-own game-set class, which sold out within four hours. A local tournament at a Miami Beach synagogue had to set up extra tables to accommodate overflow crowds. Miami has always been a city that loves whatever is in vogue, so it should come as no surprise that if there’s a mah-jongg wave sweeping the nation, Miami is getting in on the tile-clacking. The so-called

“granny game” has gotten a Miami-style glow-up, with $1,500 sets and private-chef-catered game nights—par for the course in a city that rewards splashy, maximalist moments. Mah-jongg originated in China during the mid-nineteenth century and gained popularity with the American upper classes in the 1920s, when businessman Joseph Babcock Americanized a version of the pastime. In the 1950s, the tradition spread within Jewish women’s networks, most notably in the Catskills. The kinship between Miami and the Catskills is well-established, and until recently, mah-jongg thrived among the city’s senior set. Interest in mah-jongg surged during the COVID pandemic, driven MARCH 2026

by the influx of New Yorkers, social media, the soothing nature of the tiles, and networking opportunities. Celebrity fans—including Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts, and Kelly Ripa—only added to the cultural cachet. The National Mah-Jongg League today claims more than 400,000 members, based on sales of its annual card, which acts as a kind of playbook, with rules and different hand patterns introduced each year to keep the practice fresh. “What personally drew me to it was that I found myself sitting at home during the pandemic, watching Netflix, doom-scrolling, and feeling like I lacked community,” explains fashion blogger Maria Tettamanti. “I wasn’t using my brain, and mah-jongg just felt like the perfect fit. Between padel, pickleball, knitting, and cross-stitching, mah-jongg was the hobby that spoke to me the most. So, I decided to get three friends together and take lessons, and that’s how we learned.” The social aspect of the game is what hooked writer and actress Jill Kargman. The self-professed “mah-jongg slut” even found time to play while in town promoting her film Influenced at the Miami Jewish Film Festival, drawn to the social ritual it creates. “It’s about community,” Kargman explains. “I’m bitching or gossiping, socializing, and being with my girls. Our phones are down, and it’s about conversation and challenge. Plus, you’re also staving off dementia because of the pattern recognition.” Many Miamians are similarly drawn to the cognitive benefits of the tile-based pastime, which research has linked to improved brain health in older adults, including better memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, and the potential to slow cognitive decline by engaging in complex processes such as pattern recognition and strategy. “My mother-in-law passed away three years ago with Alzheimer’s, and there’s all this research on how board games and mahjongg are stimulating for neurodegenerative issues,” explains publicist Lana Bernstein, who plays in a weekly group. “I thought this would be a good idea, even though I don’t have any degenerative issues in my family. It wasn’t super easy to learn, but I stuck with it because it was a fun group to play with, and it’s been entertaining ever since.” MARCH 2026

Mah-jongg’s intricate rules, everchanging hands, and new cards issued every year keep the game mentally stimulating and engaging.

One thing is for sure—mah-jongg is a complicated and initially confusing pursuit. Mia Glick, a former model, yoga teacher, and now mah-jongg maestro, went from teaching classes at the Miami Beach JCC to maintaining a full roster of private students who keep her zigzagging across the city. “I tell people playing mah-jongg is like patting your head, rubbing your stomach, and stomping your feet at the same time,” Glick says with a laugh. “It takes time to see the value of the game,” Glick continues. “There’s a click that happens, but sometimes it can take up to four lessons for that to happen.” She emphasizes that mah-jongg can evolve into an almost hallowed ritual that gives players a sense of belonging and consistency, noting that she had a regular group she played with for 10 years. “It becomes a sacred time in your week, where you know that on a specific day you’re going to be meeting with the same friends.” 72

“

YOU GET YOUR TILES, AND IT’S CHAOTIC AND YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. THEN SUDDENLY YOU NEED TO MAKE SENSE AND COME UP WITH THE LINES. IT’S KIND OF LIKE WHAT’S HAPPENING IN LIFE.” —Dana Segal There’s also a chance to show off your tile tactics. On March 5, the Miami Beach JCC will host a mah-jongg tournament spearheaded by Bernstein and Glick. Designed for both beginners and advanced players, the event offers a welcoming introduction to tournament-style play while reinforcing the social ritual at the heart of the pastime. For a more low-key experience, there’s Stack’d Society in North Miami, the city’s first mah-jongg members’ club and lounge. Created by mah-jongg aficionados Dana Segal and Shana Benhayoun, Stack’d Society is a stylish space outfitted with multiple game tables dressed in batik tablecloths and colorful mah-jongg sets, upholstered chairs, and a lounge area with potted orchids and soothing design elements. Originally, Benhayoun was hosting classes on an informal basis at her main business, SBT Stitches, a personalization store that specializes in high-quality embroidery and gifts. “I’d been playing mah-jongg for years, but I was playing with older ladies, and I wanted to find people my own age to play with,” says Benhayoun, who is in her thirties and has two small children. “I introduced mah-jongg classes at my store and started teaching people on a monthly basis.

Then I began hosting free weekly games, and they blew up. I had anywhere from five to 10 tables of players every Wednesday night.” Segal became a regular and eventually proposed that the two open a space together. The duo designed Stack’d Society to be a neighborhood “third place,” where members can connect and build community through the simple joy of play. The club isn’t limited to mahjongg—they also offer canasta classes—and there are plans for an after-school program for kids and charity events. For busy Miami socialites tired of the lunching-ladies scene, this moment offers a stimulating new option. And for many of these women—who are CEOs of their home lives and have a talent for turning overwhelming situations into manageable structures through proactive organization—mah-jongg is perfectly suited to occupy a great deal of brain bandwidth, with the added benefit of sensory stimulation. “I love the ritual because it’s all about making sense out of chaos,” says Segal. “You get your tiles, and it’s chaotic and you don’t know what to do. Then suddenly you need to make sense and come up with the lines. It’s kind of like what’s happening in life.” «

TASTE OF MILAN «

After nearly a half-century of setting the standard for trattorias in Italy’s financial and fashion capital, Milanese institution Le Specialità has crossed the Atlantic for its first and only international outpost, arriving in the Miami Design District. Rooted in Milan’s radical design movement of the 1960s and 1970s and reinterpreted for present-day Miami, the restaurant’s design presents a distinctly retro-chic point of view. Striped leather booths nod to vintage Ferraris, a glossy green lava-stone bar is lined with red leather stools, and a liveaction pizza counter is anchored by a striking black-and-white terrazzo mosaic-framed oven. An eclectic art collection curated by Andre Sakhai further connects Milan and Miami, pairing vintage Italian photography with works from Sakhai’s personal archives. While Miami is hardly lacking in Italian restaurants, this arrival sets itself apart

through disciplined execution, excellent sourcing, and a clear respect for tradition. The proof is in the pizza. Le Specialità’s signature and most ordered item is the margherita, a near featherweight, thin-crust pie dressed simply with tomato sauce and cheese, then baked until crisp and balanced. For those looking to build on the classic, there are options like the truffle pizza with truffle mushroom paste and freshly shaved truffle. Handmade pastas follow suit, with standouts including the tonnarelli alla Norma with eggplant and a textbook cacio e pepe that hits every note. Secondi range from dover sole meunière to veal Milanese, each prepared beautifully. Desserts stay true to form, including a classic tiramisu layered with mascarpone mousse, espresso, ladyfingers, and cocoa.

Cocktails are well-executed, but the real strength of the beverage program lies in the 260-label wine list, accented by an exceptional selection of vintage Barolo, Barbaresco, and Brunello di Montalcino. In a city that often favors reinvention over refinement, Le Specialità succeeds by doing something rarer, bringing a Milanese original to Miami with distinction. (lespecialitamia.com) —Paul Rubio

Located in the Design District, Le Specialitá is known for its thin-crust pizza, Milanese specialties, exceptional cocktails, and art-covered walls.

Peanut Butter Perfection MIAMI RESTAURANTS ARE ELEVATING PEANUT BUTTER TO NEW GOURMET HEIGHTS BY PAUL RUBIO

March 1 marks National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day, an excuse to look beyond the sandwich and celebrate America’s most nostalgic spread in grown-up form. From Ecuadorian seafood to cocktail shakers and gold-leaf desserts, Miami chefs and bartenders are incorporating peanut butter with surprising range and finesse.

DISH: Ultimate Peanut Butter Ice Cream RESTAURANT: Lily’s Handmade Ice Cream, Aventura This ice cream flavor doesn’t hold back, living true to its name. To make the Ultimate Peanut Butter, the team at Lily’s folds Jif peanut butter directly into a dairy base, then layers in Reese’s Pieces and chunks of peanut butter cups for a triple-threat effect. Creamy, crunchy, and unapologetically rich, every scoop delivers a different balance of flavor and bite. It’s small-batch ice cream for people who don’t want moderation anywhere near their dessert, and it owns that identity fully. (lilyshandmadeicecream.com)

DISH: 24K Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar RESTAURANT: Giselle, Downtown Miami At open-air rooftop restaurant Giselle, excess is part of the language, and the 24K Peanut Butter Chocolate Bar speaks it fluently. Beneath a gold-leaf finish lies a layered construction of crushed peanuts, crisp feuilletine, peanut butter mousse, and milk chocolate glaze, served alongside vanilla gelato. It’s decadent and architectural, balancing refined technique with a wink. Peanut butter grounds the spectacle in the familiar, even as the dessert gleams under Miami’s city lights. (gisellemiami.com)

DISH: Tonga de Langostinos Ecuatorianos RESTAURANT: Cotoa, North Miami At Cotoa, peanut butter appears not as a novelty, but as tradition. Freshly ground peanuts have long played a central role in Ecuadorian cuisine, and chef Alejandra Espinoza treats them with reverence and care. The Tonga de Langostinos Ecuatorianos layers grilled Ecuadorian langostinos with coconut rice, tamarind vinaigrette, and a savory, creamy tonga sauce made from peanuts, onion, garlic, cilantro, and spices, finished with sal prieta (a powder of ground peanuts and corn) for added depth. The dish showcases peanuts and house-made peanut butter as structure rather than garnish, enriching the plate while allowing the seafood to remain front and center. (cotoa.rest)

DRINK: Preserving Tradition RESTAURANT: American Social Bar & Kitchen, Brickell This cocktail understands nostalgia without leaning on gimmicks, giving us spiked PB&J goodness in a glass. Preserving Tradition combines Maker’s Mark Bourbon, peanut butter whiskey, and strawberry preserves, shaken until the fruit fully integrates into the spirit. Served over a single whiskey cube, splashed with black walnut bitters, and crowned with a mini PB&J sandwich, it lands squarely between memory and maturity. The bourbon keeps things grounded, cutting the sweetness just enough, while the peanut butter note lingers on the finish. Familiar, yes, but calibrated for an adult barstool. (americansocialbar.com)

Angel’s Envy Bourbon is washed with peanut butter, then layered with banana, honey, and Angostura Bitters, finished with orange aromatics. The result is plush without tipping into sweetness, the peanut butter adding weight and roundness. Sipped along the Miami River, it feels generous but composed, a cocktail that rewards slow drinking and proves peanut butter can hold its own in a serious whiskey conversation. (habibimia.com)

DRINK: Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie RESTAURANT: Carrot Express, various locations For those who want peanut butter without the guilt spiral, Carrot Express delivers. The Peanut Butter Cup Smoothie blends peanut butter with almond milk, cocoa, banana, dates, and protein powder into something that feels satisfying but purposeful and protein-packed. It’s thick, filling, and genuinely sustaining, working just as well post-workout as it does in place of dessert. Sweet enough to feel like a treat, clean enough to justify on a weekday, it’s peanut butter behaving responsibly without sacrificing pleasure. (carrotexpress.com)

SUSHI SUPREME AT BONDI SUSHI, DISCOVER SERIOUS SUSHI AT SENSIBLE PRICES There is no shortage of overpriced omakase experiences in South Florida, but our favorite high-quality, craveable sushi fix comes from a far more approachable source. Enter Bondi Sushi, a hole-in-the-wall concept—or rather holes, plural—that delivers serious quality without the sticker shock. Long familiar to New Yorkers thanks to its 10 locations, Bondi Sushi is now building a loyal following in Florida through a growing lineup of compact restaurants. After quietly debuting outposts in Brickell, Midtown, and Miami Beach in 2023, the brand recently opened its largest location to date in Fort Lauderdale and is set to expand to Merrick Park this spring. Each location follows the same formula: a sapphire-hued space centered around a live-action sushi bar and robata grill, with just enough seating to keep the focus on the food.

The menu spans sashimi, nigiri, hand rolls, and specialty rolls, and it is difficult to make a wrong choice. Standouts include sea scallop nigiri finished with lime zest sea salt, lobster yuzu crispy rice made with air-fried rice, and a spicy hamachi roll layered with yama gobo, pickled jalapeño, serrano aioli, crispy quinoa, and cilantro. For those seeking omakase, a 12-piece tasting menu is priced at $75, a fraction of what similar experiences command. Five hand rolls for $40 at the sushi bar make for a complete meal and a repeat-worthy habit. Low prices aside, Bondi Sushi delivers arguably the most satisfying sushi in South Florida, and it has quickly earned a spot in our regular rotation. (bondisushi.com) —PR

Spanish Landing BULLA GASTROBAR, A TAPASDRIVEN FAVORITE, BRINGS SPANISH CLASSICS TO AVENTURA

Bulla Gastrobar has opened in Aventura, bringing its tapas-inspired menu to an indoor-outdoor space just south of Aventura Mall. The menu is designed for sharing and centers on familiar Spanish plates that encourage a mix-and-match approach. Charcuterie boards of cured meats and cheeses lead the way, followed by patatas bravas, croquetas de jamón, and tender grilled octopus. Dátiles rellenos remain a signature, pairing Medjool dates stuffed with house-made chorizo and Manchego, wrapped in bacon and served with a lightly dressed arugula salad. Larger-format dishes are also well-represented, including paella mixta layered with calamari, prawns, clams, shrimp, red sofrito, and saffron rice. Braised short ribs arrive finished with

Queso Tetilla, caramelized onions, salsa criolla, potato foam, and crisp house-made chips, making them an easy centerpiece for the table. Sangria plays a visible role in the experience and is presented in several styles, the most popular of which are the Sangria Roja (red wine, brandy, triple sec, and citrus) and Sangria Blanca (sparkling wine, peach schnapps, and fresh berries for a brighter profile). Bulla’s appeal also lies in its weekly offerings. Happy hour runs daily from 4 to 7 p.m. with 50 percent off wine and beer plus discounted cocktails. Lunch specials feature two or three courses at incredibly approachable prices ($21.50 and $26.50, respectively), and weekends bring a brunch of bottomless sangrias and mimosas built around a three-course format. CELEBRATE ST. PATRICK’S DAY WITH AN IRISH COFFEE

Irish pubs have long held a special place in American culture, dating back to the nineteenth century when Irish immigrants arrived seeking new opportunities and brought with them a rich tradition of community, music, and camaraderie. These establishments quickly became essential social hubs, offering a comforting taste of home. This deep connection to Irish culture extends beyond pubs and into the realm of legendary drinks. One of the most iconic is Irish coffee, which can be traced back to Foynes, a small Irish village that was a hub for transatlantic flights. In 1943, chef Joseph Sheridan developed the drink (a blend of hot coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and whipped cream) to soothe and energize weary travelers. Its popularity soared in 1952, when international travel writer Stanton Delaplane and Jack Koeppler, owner of San Francisco’s Buena Vista Café, teamed up to recreate and perfect the recipe. Today, Irish coffee stands as a symbol of Irish hospitality—an elegant, warming drink that’s perfect for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day or simply enjoying a cozy moment. Each sip is a toast to Ireland’s inventive spirit and conviviality.

It’s my view that, as wine drinkers, we are living in a golden age. Choice has never been broader, quality higher, nor information more readily available. There is another reason for optimism: the energy and forward-thinking mindset of a new generation of winemaking leaders. This dawned on me at a recent dinner at Mandolin. Our host, Agustina Hobbs—daughter of renowned American winemaker Paul Hobbs—was in town to present her debut Cabernet Sauvignon, ALH. What struck me was the vibrancy of the wine—not the often-heavy Napa Cabernet of the past, but a fresh, confident expression rooted firmly in the region’s modern era. The wine was energetic, and so too was the room. This could easily have been a stuffy experience, given the caliber of the wine and the famous maker in attendance. But as Hobbs spoke, the table filled with smiles and laughter. “I have always cherished and respected the effort my father has put forth to craft and shape the industry,” Hobbs says. “This project was an opportunity for us to work together. The wine style is bright, fresh, and approach-

able to commemorate this new path.” Another woman shaping the future of a celebrated wine family is Chiara de Iulis Pepe, granddaughter of Emidio Pepe, whose name defines one of Abruzzo’s most respected estates, long known for meticulous farming and small-batch wines made from Italian indigenous varieties. For de Iulis Pepe, the future of wine hinges on connection. Today’s drinkers, she believes, are looking for “engagement, fun, connection” through culture, shared knowledge, and human relationships. “Creating bonds through wine can be the very first way to have younger generations fall in love with it,” she says. When I met de Iulis Pepe in November, she was touring U.S. cities, pouring her wine for sommeliers and wine lovers—a notably hands-on approach for a producer whose wines are as sought after as those of Emidio Pepe. She is also continuing the work of previous generations in the vineyard. “Nothing counts more than the attention you give to your Inset and vineyard,” she explains. In right: Chiara de Iulis Pepe 2026, that thinking takes a at the Emidio tangible form, as she plans Pepe estate in Torano Nuovo to plant a five-acre forest in the Abruzzo beside the vines—an region of Italy. investment in long-term

FROM CIT Y TO SHORE, THE FINE ART OF MIAMI LIVING

INTERIORS

SCULPTURAL SERENITY Miami interior designer Bea Pernia approaches each project as an opportunity to experiment with textures, contrasts, shapes, and colors to deliver timeless interiors that are both refined and organic. That approach to palette, natural materials, and sculptural forms was exactly what a homeowner wanted for his 2,730-square-foot residence at the Porto Vita complex in Aventura. “His vision was to transform the home into a tranquil escape that would feel both elegant and inviting, as well as personal,” says Pernia. “He wanted the space to reflect serenity while introducing individuality through carefully curated art and distinctive accents of color.” To set the appropriate backdrop for the interiors, the design team opted for a neutral palette centered around beige, sand, ivory, and warm taupe, complemented by subtle accents in gray and bronze. “The neutral foundation allows the natural materials to speak effortlessly,” says Pernia, “while the soft infusions of color bring the personality and warmth that reflect the client’s individuality and the vibrancy of Miami’s natural light.” Light played an integral role too. In the area of the home that transitions from a hallway into the dining room, the flooring appears to be made up of two different tones of marble, caramel and gray, but that’s all a trick of the eye, an illusion GABRIEL VOLPI

caused by the way natural light moves across the space. In terms of furniture, Pernia curated a mix of custom pieces and selections from both American and European brands. “Each item was chosen for its sculptural quality and functionality,” says the designer. “The intention was to create harmony, where form, comfort, and craftsmanship coexist flawlessly.” (beainteriorsdesign.com) —Florian Jouin

A neutral palette, natural elements, custom furniture, and ambient lighting define this stunning Porto Vita home.

Adding special touches that reflect your personal style makes a house feel like a home. Sometimes the smallest details can make the biggest impact, such as swapping out decorative hardware in the kitchen and bath. Other times, it’s a change that covers a larger surface area, like adding bold, patterned wallpaper or putting together a gallery wall of meaningful photos and sentimental objects. Read on for more tips. (alenacapradesigns.com)

FROM STATEMENT WALLS TO SUBTLE ACCENTS, INTENTIONAL DETAILS SHAPE SPACES THAT FEEL INVITING

ART & SOUL

Artwork, photographs, and collected objects bring visual interest while also creating an emotional connection within the home. Consider mixing all three elements to create a gallery wall, incorporating special photographs, a few small-scale art pieces, and meaningful objects or even sculptural wall decor. This can work beautifully in the most personal spaces of a home such as a bedroom, a home office, or even the family room. The mix of elements adds visual variety, and it allows you to cover a lot of surface area on a large wall.

Paint and wallcoverings play a powerful role in setting the tone of a room. Thoughtful color choices can add depth and mood to any space, and since paint covers such a large surface area, it often has one of the biggest impacts on how a room feels. If you’re looking to bring in a bold wall color and are not sure how much of it you want to use, try painting a smaller area first, like a powder room, bedroom, or office. Patterned wallcoverings offer another way to make a statement—sometimes a single wall is all it takes, balanced by neutral tones throughout the rest of the room.

THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES

While decorative hardware can often be considered a finishing touch to cabinetry or furniture, these upgrades have the power to transform (and easily update) a space. Bring in hardware with unique metals, colors, combinations of materials, or interesting shapes to add personality. You can even consider inserting a keepsake inside the hardware itself. Richelieu’s new U-Design Decorative Pull allows homeowners to place special items inside the acrylic tube handle, for the ultimate personal touch.

Closets as Destinations More than merely a place to store clothes, closets can become a destination—or even a sanctuary—in the home. “With the rise of social media and influencers, closets are no longer hidden spaces,” Faria explains. “They’ve become environments where people spend time, create content, and express themselves. We’re often incorporating [wine, cocktail, or Champagne] bars, makeup vanities, and comfortable seating, transforming the closet into a place where it’s welcoming to lounge.” “Islands with seating, built-in benches, or ot-

Lighting When thoughtfully executed, lighting can transform the entire experience of a closet space. Beyond basic recessed lighting, fixtures are now integrated throughout, incorporated into vertical shelving and extended top shelves,

and paired with puck lighting for task and feature areas. Angled lighting is also a smart addition, as it can highlight clothing, shoes, and accessories to create a boutique-like effect.

Functional Elements Claudio Faria states that one functional element his clients are embracing is a leather hanging bar integrated into a wall panel or mirror. This becomes an essential tool for outfit planning, as it allows clients to style in advance and elevate their daily routine. HL Burkley points to the popularity of hidden functionality like pull-out mirrors, valet rods, concealed hampers, and jewelry drawers that keep the space clean and practical.

from wood and leather to stone and reflective glass, combined in a harmonious way where the final product is greater than the sum of its parts. A closet island, for example, invites more tactile materials, such as durable natural stone or quartz countertops; a glass-topped island can transform storage into display. Hardware also presents an opportunity to be expressive in design. Opt for accents in brushed brass or bronze, or even something wrapped in leather or decorated to resemble fine jewelry. Burkley notes that larger-scale hardware is trending thanks to its ability to convey a more modern and intentional aesthetic.

that is truly yours. This relates to everything from shelf heights that perfectly fit your shoes (are you a Gucci heels or Golden Goose girl?) and custom drawer interiors for your accessories collection (jewelry, watches, sunglasses, etc.). Burkley also advises creating lifestyle-driven zones, such as packing areas, dedicated shoe sections, and spaces designed around a specific collection. As Faria notes, “every decision should be guided by how a client lives, dresses, and moves through the space.”

Inspired Closets Southwest Florida’s HL Burkley suggests personalization by creating unique areas in which to spotlight contents such as specific collections or shoe sections.

M LAST WORD ON THE RECORD WITH...

ROBERTA SCHILLING Blame it on the bossa nova! As the head and founder of RS Collection, Roberta Schilling brings the soul of Brazil to Miami through modern, craft-driven furniture and design. Schilling spends much of her time scouring her native Brazil for superior examples of decor and crafts to expose Miami consumers to the sophistication, craftsmanship, and ingenuity of Brazilian design. And after three decades of doing it, she certainly knows her role. (rscollection.com) —Florian Jouin

Aventura: When you think back on 30 years in the design business, what comes to mind? Schilling: The word that pops into my head is gratitude. I think about the clients who have trusted me from the very beginning, the artisans whose talent continues to inspire me, and the journey of bringing Brazilian design to the forefront of luxury interiors in the United States. What was the perception of Brazilian design in the United States when you opened your company? People knew very little. Brazil was all about Carnival and caipirinhas. Brazilian design wasn’t known or appreciated. There was no understanding of its elegance, sophistication, and diversity. I made it my mission to change that limited narrative. What is your company mantra at RS Collection? Design with bossa nova. If it doesn’t move us, then it’s not for us. What moves you to work with a particular designer and carry his or her collections? It starts with a connection, both to the work

and the person behind it. I’m drawn to designers who have a point of view, who honor their roots but are not afraid to experiment. I look for originality, timelessness, and a deep respect for materials. How do you find the artisans and artists you represent? Many come to me through referrals or word of mouth. Others I’ve discovered during my travels through Brazil. I love exploring regions known for woodworking, ceramics, and other crafts. These artisans are often preserving generations of tradition, and I see it as a privilege to help bring their work to a global audience. We can’t talk about design these days without mentioning sustainability and environmentally friendly work practices. What’s RS Collection’s stand on that? Sustainability has always been at the heart of what we do, even before it was a trend. We work with artisans who use responsibly sourced woods, natural fibers, and recycled materials. Many of our pieces are made in small batches or by hand, which reduces waste. Our focus is on quality and longevity. Thematically speaking, nature also plays a big role in the collections you carry, doesn’t it? Absolutely. Nature is our greatest muse. You see it in the organic silhouettes of our pieces, the earthy color palette, and the materials we use, which include raw wood, stone, and natural textiles. You were born into a family of creatives. Would you say design is in your DNA?

COURTESY OF RS COLLECTION

X

Absolutely. My mother ran a floral and home decor boutique. My father was involved in architecture. Together, they instilled in me an appreciation for structure and texture. Even as a child, I was always rearranging rooms or sketching ideas. I see the world through the eyes of design. What’s next for RS Collection? We’re developing a capsule collection with a younger generation of Brazilian designers that blends their modern perspectives with traditional techniques. We’re also planning more intimate client experiences, new ways to bring people even closer to the stories behind our pieces.
