EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK

KEEPING COOL

If you hadn’t noticed, it’s brutally hot outside. Whenever I have to venture beyond the comfort of air-conditioning, I don’t leave without Dyson’s HushJet Mini Cool fan. Small enough to toss in my purse, it goes wherever I go and delivers refreshing bursts of cool air exactly when I need them most. (dyson.com)

KEEPING CALM

I’m not going to lie: putting this issue together was really stressful. After many late nights, The Ritual Box became my invitation to slow down. The curated self-care set includes an aromatherapy mist, a plant-based soap, a lavender eye pillow, and an organic washcloth. The soothing scents and soft textures became my end-of-day ritual and exactly what I needed to decompress. (restandreset.com)

THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

The idea of “the best” is always evolving, especially in a place like Aventura and, more broadly, Miami. Today’s impossible reservation is tomorrow’s memory, and before long a new generation of restaurants, shops, and experiences has everyone buzzing.

That’s why the Best Of is one of our favorite issues each year. It’s a 32-page snapshot of this moment in our city’s story, as voted by you, our readers. Thank you to everyone who cast a ballot—more than ever before in our Best Of history—for helping us create a crowd-sourced guide to the restaurants, hotels, shops, spas, cultural institutions, players, and experiences that make our corner of Miami such a dynamic place to live and visit. Congratulations to all the winners!

Researching and editing this issue also sent me down memory lane. I found myself reminiscing about iconic places that are no longer with us: Chef Allen’s, Joe Allen, The Forge, Jimbo’s, Tobacco Road, and, most recently, Casa D’Angelo in Aventura. Their absence is bittersweet. But this city never stands still, and while we miss those cherished institutions, change is part of our DNA.

This issue also arrives on the heels of one of the most memorable summers in recent Miami history, thanks to the FIFA World Cup. The energy was electric, the streets were packed, and the city felt more alive than ever. The FIFA Fan Festival was a tremendous success, and the arrival of Scotland’s Tartan Army turned neighborhoods across Miami into a cheerful sea of song and kilts. Add in the festivities surrounding America’s 250th birthday, and it feels as though we’ve spent the summer in full celebration mode, embracing every reason to gather, connect, and revel in the magic of Miami.

I hope you enjoy this special Best Of issue as much as we enjoyed creating it. Keep sharing your hot takes and telling us about the restaurants, shops, spas, and hidden gems that make this vibrant, ever-changing city the very best. Did we miss your favorite? You’ll have another chance to weigh in when the first round of Best Of voting returns this December.

THE INSIDE TRACK TO ALL THINGS NEW AND NOW IN MIAMI-DADE

THE MIX

BEACH CLUB BLISS

Channel Mediterranean vibes without ever leaving Miami at the Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel’s new Solei Beach Club

Situated in the backyard of the newly renovated Art Deco hotel in South Beach, the beach club is open to the public, meaning you can indulge in a chic daycation without springing for a room. There’s a pool lined with chaise lounges, fitness classes like yoga and Aqua Zumba, and beach chairs for soaking up the sun with toes in the sand. Settle into one of the plush lounge areas beneath the thatched-roof palapa, where bartenders shake up cocktails like the Italian Margarita, made with Campari and Cointreau, and the Ibiza Sunset, blending strawberry, passion fruit, and fresh lime.

When hunger strikes there’s a menu of Spanish-influenced Mediterranean dishes designed by executive chef Gastón Javier Sanchez, a Miami native who trained under Michelin-starred icons Ferran Adrià and Gastón Acurio. The lineup includes a lavish “Seafood Colosseum” composed of oysters, Caribbean lobster, P.E.I. mussels, quahog clams, and ceviche du jour, with caviar or stone crab addons for an extra touch of decadence. Heartier options range from a mezze board stocked with

cilantro tzatziki, pistachiomint whipped feta, falafel, crispy halloumi, chargrilled artichoke, and eggplant, to oxtail empanadas and Maltalime chicken wings.

Because this is South Beach, a live DJ keeps the energy high Friday through Sunday, while a variety of cabanas are available for those looking to linger a little longer. The Ivy Cabana, which accommodates up to six people, feels tailor-made for small birthday celebrations or a girls’ day.

Located on a balcony overlooking the pool deck, it is outfitted with a flat-screen TV and lounge seating, and includes both beach and pool access. Order another cocktail, relax on your daybed, and for a few blissful hours, South Beach feels a lot more like Marbella. (soleibeach club.com) —Sara Liss

WELL READ

CELEBRATE NATIONAL BOOK LOVERS DAY AT MIAMI’S BEST INDIE BOOKSTORES

Bibliophiles, rejoice! National Book Lovers Day falls on August 9 and is devoted to the joy of reading. Whether you mark the occasion by revisiting a childhood classic or discovering your next great read, we’ve rounded up some of Miami’s most beloved independent bookstores. So stop scrolling, unplug for a while, and get lost in a good book.

BOOKS & BOOKS

Founded in 1982 by local literary luminary Mitchell Kaplan, this legendary institution has spent more than four decades serving as South Florida’s premier independent bookseller. While Books & Books now boasts multiple locations throughout the region, from Bal Harbour to Coconut Grove, the Coral Gables flagship is worth a visit. Housed inside a 1927 Mediterranean-style building listed on the local Register of Historic Places, the space feels like stepping into a bygone era. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, original tile floors, and a hushed yet relaxed atmosphere create a book lover’s sanctuary. A cozy café, an outdoor courtyard, and frequent author appearances only add to the charm. (booksandbooks.com)

DALE ZINE SHOP

A colorful, light-filled space in the Design District, this shop specializes in niche print culture. Its name nods to the classic Miami expression “¡Dale!” while supporting designers, multimedia artists, and creators who exist outside the traditional gallery system. Visitors can lose themselves browsing an eclectic, ever-changing inventory of self-published photography books, graphic design anthologies, indie music zines, and exclusive lifestyle merchandise. The space hosts everything from all-ages DIY printmaking workshops and independent internet radio broadcasts to major international art week activations, including collaborations with Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects. (dalezineshop.com)

BOOKLEGGERS LIBRARY

Miami’s first and only free bookstore, this oasis of secondhand books is tucked inside the artist studio–filled Bakehouse Art Complex on the outskirts of Wynwood. Founded in 2012 by writer Nathaniel Sandler, the nonprofit operation has spent more than a decade serving as a “no-kill shelter for books,” where literature is unapologetically free. The space is packed with a wonderfully eclectic, ever-rotating collection of rescued texts, indie classics, out-of-print oddities, and curated visual arts volumes. Everyone who enters can choose one book for free, while additional titles cost as little as $2. (bookleggerslibrary.com)

ROOTS BOOKSTORE & MARKET

Opened on Juneteenth in 2025, this thoughtfully curated, Black-owned, independent bookstore exudes soulful warmth from the moment you step through the door. Founded by the visionary Roots Collective to honor the late Daniel Agnew, the 750-square-foot Liberty City storefront buzzes with activity as book lovers browse multicultural titles and locally authored gems while sipping iced lattes courtesy of an in-store partnership with The Matcha Edit. At night, the space transforms into a vibrant community hub, hosting intimate book clubs, live poetry readings, and local vendor markets. (rootsbookstore.com)

COCKTAIL CULTURE

RUM Runner

SIP YOUR WAY THROUGH MIAMI’S BEST RUM-FUELED COCKTAILS

In Miami, rum feels woven into the city’s DNA. From mojitos and daiquiris to elevated tropical sips and even zero-proof spins, the sugarcane spirit has long been part of the local drinking culture. And with National Rum Day landing on August 16, there’s no better excuse to raise a glass.

COCONUT & PINEAPPLE AT SEXY FISH

A nod to the legendary Japanese Mizuwari cocktail, this showstopping sip is tropical, though not nearly as sweet as you might expect. Ron del Barrilito Three Stars Rum, aged in sherry casks, is infused with coconut oil for a slightly nutty finish, while pineapple and strawberry add brightness. A pandan leaf lends a fragrant, vanilla-like note. (sexyfishmiami.com)

BERRY BRICKELL AT ROSA SKY

Head to Rosa Sky, the scenic rooftop lounge perched high above Brickell, for panoramic views of the shimmering skyline. From golden-hour sunsets to glittering city lights, the view can’t be beat. Order the Berry Brickell, a vibrant cocktail made with smooth Santa Teresa 1796 Rum, St-Germain, fresh raspberry, lime, and a dash of tiki bitters. (rosaskyrooftop.com)

ESPRESSO MAÍZTINI AT TORO TORO

FROZEN MANGO MOJITO AT COYO TACO

Keep summer heat at bay with the Frozen Mango Mojito at Wynwood’s trendy taqueria, Coyo Taco. This icy riff on the Cuban classic combines Diplomático Rum, fresh mint, lime juice, and local mangoes, so every sip tastes like a mini vacation. It’s best enjoyed alongside the rib eye taco topped with caramelized onions, salsa verde, and cilantro. (coyo-taco.com)

The zero-proof Espresso Maíztini is perfect for those abstaining from alcohol but still wanting in on the espresso martini craze. Made with Ritual Zero-Proof Rum Alternative, butter-flavored popcorninfused Lyre’s Coffee Originale, cold brew, clove, and cinnamon, it’s a spicy, coffee-tinged drink that delivers plenty of complexity without the hangover. (torotoromiami.com)

COCONUT OVERLOAD AT THE NATIONAL HOTEL

There are several rum cocktails on the menu at the storied National Hotel’s poolside Aqua Bar & Grill, but the Coconut Overload feels especially festive. A decadent blend of Pa’lante Blanco Rum and coconut cream, it arrives inside a fresh whole coconut for the ultimate vacation-ina-glass moment. Also on offer: a classic piña colada, a frozen daiquiri, and the aptly named Childhood Memory, a savorysweet mix of Pa’lante Blanco Rum, guava, lime, habanero honey, and fresh mint. The glowboosting treatment combines gentle resurfacing with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and skin-loving serum to leave your complexion smoother, brighter, and remarkably well rested. It’s like getting eight hours of sleep in facial form. The treatment is available through August 31—and, no, Gwyneth won’t be performing it (1hotels. com/south-beach, goop.com)

Studio N

Founded by Nichola Lynch and Natalie Peacock, Studio N has become one of Miami’s top destinations for exceptional hair. Lynch is the celebrity stylist behind supermodel Brooks Nader’s and influencer Vita Sidorkina-Morabito’s coiffures, while Peacock, a master colorist, is known for creating some of the city’s best dimensional blondes. Together, they’ve built a loyal following inside their luxurious yet welcoming salon, where standout offerings include Japanese Milbon treatments, Wella and Redken color services, and Christy Martin’s Maison Martin body oil, a client favorite that often sells out. (studionsalon.com)

For those who love Japanese culture and expertly crafted cocktails, Dekotora delivers. Tucked behind Asian-inspired Argentinian steak house Nino Gordo, the bar is accessed through a secret entrance disguised as a vintage cigarette vending machine. Inside, the intimate space evokes the back seat of a 1970s Japanese long-haul truck, complete with projections that transport guests to Tokyo after dark. Mixologists craft bespoke cocktails tailored to your tastes, though the Yuzu Kosho Margarita, made with JC Tradicional Blanco, St. George Basil Eau de Vie, yuzu kosho, lime, and gochugaru salt, is hard to beat. STREET ART SOUVENIRS

Museum of Graffiti Gift Shop

There’s something irresistible about a museum gift shop, and the one at the Museum of Graffiti is no exception. Curated by co-founder Allison Freidin, the compact but mighty space is packed with cool finds, from Kidrobot collectibles and Taschen books to stationery, apparel, and limited-edition Herschel Supply Co. backpacks and blind boxes. The shop also carries officially licensed pieces inspired by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. (museumofgraffiti.com)

One of Lincoln Road’s most stylish boutiques in the ’90s, Base relocated to Wynwood three years ago. Today, it is still a go-to destination for curated menswear and fashion accessories, carrying cult-favorite Sabah Dealer shoes, Palmier sunglasses by local “it” couple Yoana “Yo” Obregon Mendez and Max Mendez, Onia swim trunks, tees by Anitya Fantôme, and outerwear and backpacks from Danish brand Rains. The boutique also boasts an edgy jewelry selection featuring designers Luis Morais and Britt Bolton. (baseworld.com)

Mister 01 Pizza School

Fun fact: Mister 01 is named after founder and chef Renato Viola, who earned his U.S. visa based solely on his extraordinary pizza-making skills. Beyond the restaurant’s beloved pies, one of its coolest offerings is the pizza school, a hands-on experience perfect for date nights, celebrations, or groups of friends. During the class, guests learn the secrets to crafting restaurant-worthy pizza at home, from stretching dough to mastering signature techniques alongside the chefs. Afterward, students can enjoy their handmade masterpiece onsite. You’ll also leave with a chef’s hat and apron, because every pizza pro deserves the uniform. (mistero1pizzaschool.com)

WHAT’S IN

Loewe Turns 180

A commitment to leather excellence and creativity is at the heart of Loewe, the luxury fashion house founded by a collective of artisans in Madrid in 1846. German for “lion,” Loewe has earned a fierce reputation for pairing quality and playfulness throughout its storied history. In honor of its 180th anniversary, the brand has debuted a capsule collection of bags, small leather goods, and ready-to-wear pieces that both salute its legacy and propel it forward.

Signature items include a new interpretation of the Amazona 180, the enduring handbag first introduced in 1975 and reimagined by creative directors Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. This design and other standouts—such as the Lion Intarsio Hammock Flip, pictured at right—feature chic lion motifs, which also appear throughout the collection in beaded embroidery and leather charms. Together, the pieces celebrate the generations of artisans whose craftsmanship has shaped the brand, from its origins as a small workshop on a cobblestone street to its artistic midcentury window displays and bold visions of fashion’s future. SEASONED WITH STYLE

FRIDGE BENEFITS

THE CASE FOR ROMANTICIZING MEAL PREP

People (I am people) will spend $300 on supplements, $20 on a smoothie, and $180 on a myofascial massage, then eat crackers and a bag of shredded cheese over the sink at 10 p.m. because they “had no time” to fi gure out dinner. It’s easy to fall into this contradiction of romanticizing wellness while treating nourishment like a last-minute thought. To combat this, I’ve fallen in love with meal prep. There’s something so satisfying about opening your fridge to fi nd evidence of a life well-planned. Meal prep is self-respect. And with the right attitude and approach, it is one of the easiest forms of self-care there is.

PREPARATION IS A LUXURY

A big part of luxury is the ability to remove friction from your life. Most people are not eating poorly because they lack willpower, but because they’re overwhelmed, underprepared, and constantly making decisions on the go. After a long day, the brain will almost always choose what feels easiest and most immediately comforting. That’s why preparation changes everything. Having food already considered ahead of time creates a sense of calm and structure that convenience culture quietly steals from us. Reframe meal prep as a way to save your future self time, energy, and unnecessary decisions so daily life feels less chaotic.

INGREDIENT PREP > MEAL PREP

People tend to fail when their meals are overly repetitive and controlled. The shift from prepping meals to prepping ingredients is often far more sustainable. Focus on versatile components: roasted vegetables, cooked proteins, sliced fruit, grains, sauces, and simple snacks. This creates flexibility rather than rigidity. The same ingredients can become a beach lunch, a weeknight

dinner, or even an effortless hosting plate. One dressing, two pounds of protein, and three roasted vegetables can carry an entire week with surprising ease.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Small systems outperform motivation every single time. Here are a few ways to make meal prep more intuitive and efficient:

chicken, protein bars, and sliced fruit.

• Prep protein first and treat it as the hero ingredient—the anchor that makes meals feel substantial, satisfying, and easy to build around.

• Keep fallback foods ready for chaotic days. Think: frozen soups, boiled eggs, rotisserie

• Use sauces and dressings strategically. A chimichurri, yogurt dip, or tahini drizzle can make the exact same ingredients taste entirely different.

• Store prepped foods at eye level so the healthiest option is also the easiest.

BRIGHT AND HERBY CHIMICHURRI

Ingredients

1/2 cup olive oil

2 tbsp. red wine vinegar

1 tsp. lemon juice

1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp. dried red chili flakes

1 tsp. dried oregano

1/2 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. pepper

VAdd everything to a bowl and mix well. Let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Use as a marinade or serve over roasted vegetables, steak, or eggs.

WANDERLUST

KENYA IN CONTRAST

FROM THE WILDLIFE-RICH MAASAI MARA TO THE REMOTE CONSERVANCIES OF LAIKIPIA, A PAIR OF ANDBEYOND CAMPS SHOW HOW PACE, DESIGN, AND LANDSCAPE SHAPE TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT SAFARI EXPERIENCES

Lions, giraffes, khakis, and open-air Land Cruisers: these quintessential safari images remain deeply tied to the East African experience. At andBeyond Bateleur Camp, this Out of Africa fantasy still holds strong within Kenya’s famed Maasai Mara National Reserve.

While the Maasai Mara is defined by vast, tree-speckled plains—“Mara” means “spotted” in the local Maa language— Bateleur occupies an unexpectedly lush pocket of forest filled with blue monkeys, warthog families, and prolific birdlife. It’s an ideal fit for both safari first-timers and seasoned returnees, thanks to strong Big Five sightings and adrenaline-filled days. While some newer safari camps emphasize community workshops, wellness offerings, and slower-paced itineraries, Bateleur remains an unapologetic soundtrack of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” moments and riveting game drives from sunrise to sundown. It’s easy to understand why the camp remains one of conservation-minded outfitter andBeyond’s flagships.

From above: enjoy dinner and fireside chats with sweeping valley views at andBeyond Suyian Lodge; riveting game drives await at andBeyond Bateleur Camp.

That approach extends to the camp’s design. Bateleur channels the nostalgic glamour many travelers associate with traditional safari luxury: billowing canvas curtains, director’s chairs, worn plaid couches, colorful area rugs, wooden furnishings, explorer-inspired accents, and bars stocked with vintage crystal glassware for sundowners, aperitifs, digestifs, and everything in between. Meals move between candlelit tables under canvas and dinners beneath the stars, reinforcing the ritual of highend safari life without feeling staged.

The camp itself is divided into two mirrored sections: North Camp, with 10 tents, a shared dining tent, a swimming pool, and a boma, and South Camp, which swaps one guest tent

for a gift shop, gym, and massage tent. All 19 guest tents share an outward-facing layout, centered around king-size beds with leather headboards and footboards, cocktail stations, double vanities, and glass-enclosed bathrooms featuring Victorian soaking tubs and outdoor showers. Private decks with sunken lounges overlook the Mara, however, an electric fence keeps elephants and large predators from wandering directly into camp.

While Bateleur embraces a timeless safari formula, the wildlife-rich Maasai Mara has also become one of Africa’s busiest destinations, particularly during the Great Migration from late July through early October. Vehicle congestion can impact sightings, though weekday drives and off-season visits tend to feel markedly lighter.

And the wildlife drama hardly disappears outside migration season. During my February visit, we spent more than two hours tracking the Maji Chafu lion pride as they stalked a dazzle of zebras before successfully

ambushing two. Moments later, five hyenas emerged seemingly from nowhere, triggering a tense standoff over the fresh kill. The next day, we found ourselves stalled by elephant traffic before abruptly reversing course during a high-speed chase sparked by a bull elephant in musth—except this time, we were the ones being chased.

Even with the Mara’s popularity, Bateleur succeeds at delivering the kind of safari people fly halfway around the world hoping for: long game drives with real stakes, big-cat encounters that derail all sense of time, and campfire retellings that somehow become more entertaining by dessert.

andBeyond Suyian Lodge

Rocky, rugged, and far removed from the classic East African safari circuit, Kenya’s Laikipia region offers a striking counterpoint to the Maasai Mara experience. At andBeyond Suyian Lodge, travelers trade dense clusters of safari vehicles for dirt tracks, kopjes (steep-

sided rocky hills), and stretches of wilderness where you can go hours without seeing another human being.

Opened in July 2025 within the 44,000-acre Suyian Conservancy, Suyian Lodge is just a 60-minute prop-plane flight from Nairobi, but it all feels considerably removed. Dramatic elevation changes across relatively short distances create a diverse range of ecosystems, from savanna and grassland to riverbanks, dense Vachellia woodland, and rocky escarpments. More than 55 mammal species and upwards of 260 bird species have adapted to these shifting landscapes, though one animal has rapidly placed Suyian on the safari map: the melanistic leopard, more commonly referred to as the black leopard or black panther.

With only around 10 such leopards believed to exist across the Laikipia region, sightings can feel almost absurdly unlikely. I struck out, though guests directly after my stay saw one, as did two colleagues who visited months earlier.

Black leopard sightings aside, Suyian Lodge more than justifies a trip. A harmonious marriage of architecture and environment, it blends naturally into the surrounding granite kopjes through organic materials, rounded roofs, and curved lines that echo the terrain. A soaring central lodge and 14 suites draw inspiration from the beadwork, handmade tools, and

craftsmanship of the local seminomadic Samburu tribe, with furnishings and pottery sourced from Kenyan artisans. Beginning at around 1,900 square feet, the suites boast rain showers with skylights, window-facing soaking tubs, plunge pools, fireplaces, and reading nooks.

While game drives remain a major draw— whether for black leopard hopefuls or sightings of Grévy’s zebras, giraffes, lions, and tiny dik-diks—additional activities range from walking, camel, and horseback safaris to botany walks, fishing excursions, and visits to archaeological sites. Guests can also spend time with local pastoral communities and their Boran cattle, gaining a better understanding of daily life in this remote part of Kenya.

That broader perspective is central to Suyian’s identity. Conservation here exists largely outside the national park system, within a Laikipia model where private and community

conservancies play an increasingly important role in wildlife protection and rewilding land historically tied more to ranching than tourism. In fact, Suyian Conservancy itself was once a sheep farm before later operating as a family-owned cattle ranch.

But much of the pleasure at Suyian comes from inhabiting a part of Kenya that still feels genuinely remote. Meals stretch for hours against sweeping valley views and fastchanging weather, while nights are spent outdoors beneath unusually clear skies deep in the bush. And while the possibility of spotting a black leopard heightens the anticipation surrounding every game drive, Suyian ultimately succeeds because the lodge and landscape are satisfying enough on their own. APPALACHIAN ARTISTRY

EXPLORING THE THRIVING ASHEVILLE REGION

With the layered hues of the Blue Ridge Mountains painting the distant backdrop, the continuum between Asheville, Appalachia, agriculture, and the arts coalesces with a sunset cocktail on the terrace of the four-star Inn on Biltmore Estate (biltmore.com).

It all comes together after visiting the Biltmore House—George and Edith Vanderbilt’s 250-room manse laden with remarkable art—followed by a docent-led tour through Asheville’s River Arts District (RAD, as locals call it). Many of the artisans and craftsmen instrumental in the 1895 mansion’s exquisite architectural finishes maintained studios in the railroad industrial area along the French Broad River. Today, the RAD is a hub for hundreds of artists working in all mediums.

Asheville Art Experience (ashevilleart experience.com) offers private tours for those on the hunt for a special piece and coordinates hands-on studio sessions so you can work alongside an artist.

The culinary arts are equally at home in Asheville, where many restaurateurs take the hyperlocal farm-to-table philosophy to new gastronomic heights. Co-founded in 2009 by chef Meherwan Irani and his wife, Molly, Chai Pani (chaipani.com) in the South Slope neighborhood is widely credited with helping to launch the city’s dining renaissance. The otherworldly flavors of its Indian street food—from green mango chaat to savory griddled pancakes known as uttapam—have garnered several accolades from the James Beard Foundation, and the concept has since expanded to Decatur, Georgia, and Washington, D.C.

The Iranis describe their cuisine as “mindblasting,” and you may leave feeling sated for days. That is, until you settle in for dinner at Luminosa (luminosaavl.com), located in The Flat Iron Hotel (ashevilleflatiron.com), a 100-year-old landmark that also hosts a speakeasy below the lobby and a rooftop bar and café. With the motto “where wood-fired Italian recipes meet modern Appalachian foodways,” Luminosa exclusively sources ingredients

No visit to the Asheville area is complete without a tour of the Biltmore House (above and top right), which stuns in any season. Entertain your taste buds at such restaurants as Chai Pani (below) and Luminosa inside the historic Flat Iron Hotel (above right).

within a 30-mile radius, so its menu is undoubtedly seasonal. Though only open for two years, Luminosa has already earned a Michelin Green Star (recognizing its commitment to sustainability) and a Michelin Bib Gourmand designation. Bring your Asheville experience full circle at the circa-1913 Omni Grove Park Inn & Spa (omnihotels.com), listed on the National Register of Historic Places and boasting yet another outstanding terrace for toasting the sun as it sets behind the mountains. (exploreasheville.com)

The Great Outdoors

A visit to Asheville easily translates into immersive excursions to other parts of western North Carolina, where winding mountain roads are braided with small towns harboring history and often-surprising sophistication. For nature lovers, the options are endless: hikes both gentle and grueling as well as skiing, golfing, fly-fishing, and white-water rafting. Whether adventuring or relaxing, this region is the perfect place to disconnect from your screen and reconnect with the land on your own terms.

An hour outside of Asheville in Madison County is Hot Springs, where the Appalachian Trail cuts through downtown, inviting thru-hikers to rest and gather provisions. At the 100-acre Hot Springs Resort & Spa (nchotsprings.com), natural mineral baths are surrounded by a serene forest and the French Broad. The town is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts due to its proximity to Pisgah National Forest and dozens of hiking trails, including those at Max Patch, a 4,629-foot-tall mountain bald that rewards with 360-degree views stretching to Tennessee. From Hot Springs, it’s just an hour along the scenic drive to Burnsville, nestled in the shadows of Black Mountain and Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Burnsville

is a certified Dark Sky community renowned for its stargazing and home to a thriving arts district named after the Toe River Valley. In fact, Yancey County is believed to have the highest per-capita concentration of artisans (some 600) in the United States. Much of that creative legacy is tied to the nearby Penland School of Craft, which was founded in 1928 as a cottage industry that enabled local women to sell their handwoven goods. Head to the Burnsville town square to check into the oldest continuously operating hotel in North Carolina, The NuWray Hotel (nuwray. com). Dating to the 1800s, the hotel underwent a complete renovation before Tropical Storm Helene’s flooding event in 2024, so it was ready to host the World Central Kitchen as its workers fed displaced residents. Today, the hotel’s former carriage house is a lively bar and restaurant, while a basement speakeasy is centered around the property’s original laundry machine.

Another hour’s drive lands you in Banner Elk, a popular winter destination that lures skiers to the Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain resorts. In the summer, Floridians and those from hotter climes escape here for the cooler temperatures afforded by the 3,700-foot elevation. Because of its long history as an affluent, year-round destination, Banner Elk and the surrounding area have a range of amenities and attractions for multigenerational groups: wineries and gourmet restaurants, the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster, glamping, bedand-breakfast inns, and the famous Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain. ESCAPE TO LAPLAYA BEACH & GOLF RESORT, WHERE COASTAL LUXURY MEETS THE SUGAR-WHITE SANDS OF NAPLES FLORIDIANA

WHERE TIDE MEETS TABLE

Hotel guests love LaPlaya’s signature restaurant, Baleen, for its sweeping Gulf views, ultra-fresh seafood, perfectly grilled steaks, and colorful cocktails served in a romantic beachfront setting— yes, even with tables right in the sand. In late 2025, Hector Espinosa took the reins as the resort’s executive chef, infusing bold creativity and a fresh perspective. In a town where water is everywhere yet true beachfront dining is a rarity, Baleen is a gem—delivering both a front-row seat to Naples’ most breathtaking sunsets and top-notch cuisine.

NAPLES GETAWAY

You could easily spend an entire day on LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort’s treasured strand of sand. Mornings might unfold with a swim in the calm Gulf, followed by a stroll along the shoreline, where seashells glint in the sun. Beachfront loungers and private cabanas offer views of the horizon, and cocktails and lunch arrive without the need to slip on shoes. When afternoon comes, wade in and out of waves, flip through a good book, or simply take in the salty sea breeze. As golden hour approaches, the beach transforms into a glowing, postcard-perfect scene, culminating in an unobstructed sunset and a magical feeling that lingers long after the last ray of light. ON COURSE FOR FUN

Tee time, anyone? Those searching for a vacation involving ball striking will appreciate LaPlaya Golf Club’s beautiful 18hole, par-72 course, which is approximately 4 miles away from the resort and designed by acclaimed architect Bob Cupp. Stretching 6,902 yards (from its tournament tees), the course features tree-lined fairways, ample water hazards, and smooth TifEagle Bermuda greens. Should your game need polishing, head to the 7-acre practice facility, which includes a full-length driving range, as well as areas to hone shorter shots, chip shots, and putts.

SpaTerre, LaPlaya’s boutique spa, is a sanctuary dedicated to wellness, boasting a full complement of services. Guests can select from an array of massages, such as therapeutic deep-tissue, tension-relieving reflexology, and uniquely restorative Himalayan salt stone therapy. Beyond massage, signature offerings—such as the Javanese Royal Treatment and the SpaTerre Signature Facial—provide bespoke experiences rooted in tradition and innovation.

LIGHT FANTASTIC

FERRARI SHOCKED THE WORLD WITH THE UNVEILING OF ITS FIRST EV, THE FUTURISTIC LUCE. IS THE OUTCRY JUSTIFIED?

It could have come from the lips of Star Trek’s resident pointy-eared Vulcan, Mr. Spock. “It’s a Ferrari, Jim. But not as we know it.”

Yes, the Skittles-colored toaster-on-wheels you see before you is, alarmingly, Ferrari’s newest offering. It’s called Luce, which is Italian for “light,” and it’s the Prancing Horse brand’s first four-door, five-seat, all-electric luxury crossover.

Its unveiling at the end of May caused the kind of uproar and internet meltdown not seen since the debut of the Tesla Cybertruck or Jaguar’s Barbie-pink, four-door, electric GT, now named Jaguar Type 01 (which sounds like a blood group). What prompted the frenzied fury was simply the Luce’s exterior design. If, like me, you firmly believe that Ferraris should be things of true beauty, designed to seduce and thrill, then the Luce is a shock.

Take away the Prancing Horse badges, and the Luce would indeed be unrecognizable as a Ferrari. A new Honda Accord or a newcomer from China’s BYD or Geely, for sure. Or maybe

the car that Apple designed but never built, which makes sense considering that the controversial shape came off the drawing board of former Apple chief design officer, Sir Jony Ive. Together with famed Australian industrial designer Marc Newson, Ive runs LoveFrom, the San Francisco–based design consulting firm

Ferrari turned to for a clean-sheet design for its first EV.

But never mind the exterior, because this Ferarri has by far the coolest interior of any Ferrari ever. The look, feel, and style are all sensational. This is where the design brilliance of Ive and Newson emerges. You see it in such details as the truly gorgeous three-spoke steering wheel that’s a deliberate nod to Ferraris past, as well as the articulating screen in the center of the dash. The launch control “handle” you pull down from the roof to engage— like some control from a Bell helicopter—is pure theater.

The inside is huge, with stretch-out rear-seat knee room and plenty of luggage space beneath that high-lifting tailgate. The Luce measures 197.9 inches bow to stern—two inches more than Ferrari’s Purosangue SUV—and is more than 78 inches wide and 60.8 inches tall. Like the Purosangue, it has rear-hinged doors for dramatic effect.

What goes without saying is that the Luce

will be sensational to drive. It boasts a quartet of electric motors juiced by a 122-kWh battery pack and delivering a combined output of 1,035 hp. Ferrari claims zeroto-62 acceleration in 2.5 seconds, a 193-mph top speed, and a solid range of around 330 miles.

POWER FILE

PRICE: FROM $645,000 (EST) MOTORS: 4 X ELECTRIC BATTERY: 122 KWH POWER: 1,035 HP RANGE: UP TO 330 MILES 0-60: 2.5 SECONDS TOP SPEED: 193 MPH LENGTH/WIDTH: 197.9/78.7 INCHES WEIGHT: 4,982 POUNDS WHY WE SORT OF LOVE IT: BECAUSE IT’S A 1,000-PLUS-HORSEPOWER ELECTRIC FERRARI THAT SHOULD BE SENSATIONAL TO DRIVE.

While those numbers sound impressive, remember that a Tesla Model X Plaid is just as fast, while Porsche’s Taycan Turbo GT with 1,019 hp can hit 60 in 1.9 seconds. Then there’s the Lucid Air Sapphire with 1,234 hp that can catapult to 60 mph in a blistering 1.89 seconds and go 427 miles on a single charge. And each of these cars costs a fraction of what the Luce will go for.

The electric Ferrari is expected to start at a jaw-dropping $645,000. Add a few options and you’re likely looking at three-quarters of a million—considerably more than what RollsRoyce charges for its electric Spectre.

Truth is, Ferrari will likely have no problem

finding buyers for the estimated 800 to 1,000 Luces it’ll build each year. Order books are said to be full through the end of 2027. The early hand-raisers are, I’m sure, existing Ferrari owners who are happy to buy anything new with a Prancing Horse badge on the hood. The first cars will arrive in the United States next spring.

With time, I’m certain the shape will seem less controversial, less unconventional, less like an extra from Pixar’s Cars movies. And Ferrari will continue to build combustion-engined cars that stir the soul and are a feast for the eyes—cars that are true bella macchinas. «

One word to describe becoming the first Michelinstarred kosher restaurant in the world?

Surreal. Unforgettable. How did you celebrate? The first celebration was with our entire team because this star belongs to all of us. A Michelin star is never the achievement of one person; it is the result of a group of passionate people showing up every day and giving their best. The next day, my wife and I celebrated quietly at home, just the two of us. We opened a bottle of wine, sat together, and reflected on the journey, the sacrifices, the setbacks, and the long days.

How is Mutra different as a kosher restaurant?

Our goal has always been to create a world-class dining experience that happens to be kosher, not a kosher restaurant trying to imitate fine dining. Every detail, from the ingredients to the execution, is held to the highest standards. (mutramiami.com)

In the moodily lit dining room, traditional har gau shares the table with inventive creations like sesame prawn toast, black truffle spring rolls, taro puffs, and black pepper duck and pumpkin dumplings. The showstopper is the lobster dumpling, shaped like little fish swimming across the plate, proof that dim sum can be both playful and utterly delicious. (fontainebleau.com)

Q&A

WITH MANJA STANKOVIC

Group Beverage Manager at Paris Society, the team behind Mimi Kakushi & Gigi Rigolatto at the newly reopened Delano Miami Beach

Why did Paris Society choose the Delano as the setting for its concepts?

The Delano has always carried a certain timeless Miami glamour, and it draws an audience that values the experience as much as the address. That made it the right home for two concepts built on immersive design and the kind of evening people remember. What drinks should people order at each?

At Gigi Rigolatto, the Il Bellini di Gigi. Made with Boiron Peach Puree, Giffard Creme de Peche, and Prosecco, it’s a refined take on the Italian classic and captures the restaurant’s elegant spirit. At Mimi Kakushi, the Nara Nara, served at minus 20 degrees Celsius inside a block of ice. It’s one of Miami’s most distinctive cocktail presentations. What is the overall experience?

A cocktail is often a guest’s first impression and just as often their last memory, so it sets the tone for everything in between. Every drink is built to feel intentional, so the experience holds from the first sip to the last. (paris-society.com) —J.D.P.

WITH AMY ROSENBERG

CEO, MIAMI BEACH BOTANICAL GARDEN

Since becoming CEO three years ago, what changes have you made?

I have revived the garden, thanks to my brilliant team, while restructuring the model within. Since I joined, we’ve become accredited as an arboretum. We’ve increased programming by 700 percent; it’s become a multisensory museum to smell, see, touch, and connect our visitors to plants. What’s the most impressive aspect of the property?

We have a 100-year-old banyan tree and a water garden that rivals Claude Monet’s.

What are you most excited about for the coming year?

In September and October, Garden Fellow Andi Potamkin is doing a series on gardening, while Karina Del Punta, PhD, is leading a series titled “Nature in Community.” I’m also excited about our “Dinner Under the Palms” February 4. (mbgarden.org) —E.M.N.

PRIME TIME

Swanky, nostalgic, and already filled with familiar faces, Slim’s is the latest concept from James Beard Award–winning restaurateur Stephen Starr. The 183-seat newcomer brings a glamorous reimagining of the classic steak house inspired by Hollywood’s golden age.

Designed by Gachot, Slim’s pairs plush pink banquettes, moody lighting, marble checkerboard floors, and Art Deco murals by illustrator Christoph Niemann to create a setting that is modern and timeless at once. Located on the first floor of Bal Harbour Shops, it’s a stylish spot to indulge in prime steaks and potent martinis.

The menu delivers all the bells and whistles diners have come to expect from Starr. Begin with the delightfully flaky buttermilk biscuits or the joyful pigs in a blanket, featuring kosher hot dogs wrapped in puff pastry with deli mustard, a throwback bite that instantly channels childhood. The whimsical crab-stuffed avocado is cleverly fashioned to resemble a whole avocado while hiding crab inside an edible shell.

Seafood entrées are spectacular, particularly the Dover sole bathed in lemon, capers, and brown butter, and the grilled branzino

paired with Tuscan kale, gigante beans, and tomato vinaigrette. Of course, beef is the star attraction—from an elegant 8-ounce filet mignon to a hulking 32-ounce porterhouse for serious carnivores. A nod to Starr’s hometown is the decadent $100 Philly cheesesteak, layered with Wagyu beef, black truffle, foie gras, fried onions, and melted American cheese on a freshly baked sesame roll. Add classic sides like creamed spinach, mac and cheese, and stuffed hash browns, and wash it all down with a Sinatra Martini topped with an oyster and caviar. Finally, the bright-pink Champagne cake is a mustorder dessert, as much for your Instagram feed as your sweet tooth. (slimsbalharbour. com) —Jacquelynn Powers

The regular menu is divided into “Not Pasta,” “Signature Pastas,” and “Classic Pastas,” while the generous Spice menu spins the greatest hits from each section with the likes of polpette di manzo (meatballs), paccheri con branzino, and a classic tiramisu for dessert. Beyond the pasta bar, guests will find a welcoming wine enoteca and a lush garden designed for alfresco dining. (ottoandpepe.com)

Bagatelle brings its signature blend of French Riviera dining and nightlife to Miami Spice with a $65 dinner menu featuring some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. MINDFUL MIXOLOGIST

IT WAS ALL YELLOW

RAISE A GLASS TO AUGUST WITH THIS TART YET REVITALIZING TONIC

Come summer, I can’t help but crave a fun and refreshing libation. And if that drink offers a nuanced expression of health, all the better. With its luminous mix of Meyer lemon, honey, ginger, coconut water, and olive oil, this zero-proof tonic will awaken the senses and restore an inner glow. Its soft yellow color reflects the high vitamin C content of the citrus, essential for immune support, collagen synthesis, and skin elasticity. The olive oil introduces monounsaturated fats that promote heart health and reduce inflammation.

XOlio e Limone

Ingredients

1 oz. whole Meyer lemon, thoroughly washed and sliced

1/2 oz. honey

1 1/4-inch knob fresh ginger

1/2 oz. extra-virgin olive oil

2 oz. coconut water

Lemon meringue and lemon

zest to garnish (optional, meringue recipe below)

Add the Meyer lemon, honey, ginger, olive oil, and coconut water to a blender and emulsify. Pour into a glass. Gently spoon a generous dollop of the meringue onto the surface of the cocktail. Top with lemon zest. To turn this elixir into a bright and velvety cocktail, add 1 1/2 oz. of gin, preferably Fords Gin.

Lemon Meringue Ingredients

1 large egg white (room temperature)

A drop of lemon juice to help stabilize the egg white

2 tbsp. granulated sugar

In a bowl, beat the egg white and lemon juice until soft peaks form. Gradually add the sugar, one tbsp. at a time, while continuing to beat. Continue whisking until the mixture forms stiff, glossy peaks and the sugar is fully dissolved.

GREEK REVIVAL

CONSIDER THIS YOUR INVITATION TO DRINK LIKE A GREEK GOD

Dionysus had a broad portfolio. Not only was he the Greek god of wine, but he also represented theater, festivity, and “wild frenzy” (whatever that means). While he sounds like he’d be right at home on South Beach during spring break, Dionysus was a busy man. It was his mission to travel far and wide, carrying the great gift of the vine across the ancient world.

Evidence of winemaking in Greece dates back more than 6,000 years, making it one of the oldest winemaking civilizations on earth. But despite this long history, for much of the twentieth century, most Greek wine simply wasn’t very exciting— or at least, very little of it was reaching anyone who’d notice.

That is no longer the case. Newer generations of winemakers are increasingly focused on producing unique, high-quality wines that deserve to be taken seriously. And not a moment too soon.

Two-thirds of Greek wine is white, and the king of Greek grapes is, in my opinion, Assyrtiko. It’s at its best when grown on the Aegean island of Santorini, where conditions are so extreme that vines are trained into little baskets to protect their grapes from the relentless wind and sunlight. These intense conditions translate to intense wines: richly textured, deeply concentrated, salty and savory, yet incredibly refreshing. Top

examples are among the greatest white wines in the world. Assyrtiko from Venetsanos Winery, which dates to 1947, is a lovely option.

Another charming Greek white is Moschofilero, derived from a grape grown on the mainland. It’s zesty, floral, and ideal for summertime drinking, even if you’re miles from a Greek island. For reds, look for spicy and structured Agiorgitiko or zesty Xinomavro, Greece’s answer to Barolo.

If you can’t jump on a plane, a trip to Mandolin in the Design District presents a tasty alternative. As you walk through its blue door, it feels like you’re entering a real upscale Greek taverna. The Aegean cuisine is fresh and delicious, and sommelier Freddy Vargas has sourced some exciting Greek wines. This includes the classics, of course, but don’t overlook the characterful Greek rosés, especially in summer. Perhaps Dionysus did stop by Miami after all. (winebysarah.net) «

INTERIORS

FLOW STATE

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the Jade Signature tower in Sunny Isles Beach is known for its distinctively angled, flow-through silhouette, a feature that provides the building with water views to the east and west. It was these coveted panoramas and the Pritzker-caliber architecture that would inspire designers—and sisters—Cristina and Monica Souza of MC Studio when they were hired to renovate the interiors of a 4,346-square-foot residence within the 57-story high-rise.

“The building’s fluid, organic language establishes its relationship with the ocean, which was a central element in our design,” says Cristina. “We wanted the interiors to reflect the structure’s continuity and effortless flow, so every decision, from the shades we used to the scale of the furniture, was made to enhance that connection to the water.”

To that point, the residence’s color palette is rather controlled, a neutral scheme of warm white, soft beige, and subtle green layered with

natural wood accents. “The intention was to create a serene and sophisticated backdrop that would feel warm,” says Monica. “We allowed light and texture to define the spaces.”

Because the residence’s palette is so restrained, said texture became essential. The design team introduced depth through natural stone, wood, soft upholstery, and custom millwork.

When it came time to choose the furniture, the designers focused on clean lines, generous proportions, and comfort. “We combined custom-designed pieces with selections from high-end brands to achieve a balance between elegance and livability,” says Cristina. “The goal was for each piece to feel sculptural and comfortable without appearing visually heavy.”

“The homeowners felt the finished residence

fully reflected their vision—elegant, calm, and highly livable—so they were extremely happy with our approach,” says Monica. “For us, it was very rewarding to see how everything came together with such clarity and balance. It’s a project we are extremely proud of.”

Informed by its stunning water views, this Sunny Isles Beach condo pairs natural elements with a neutral, soothing color palette.

BEAT THE HEAT

SMART WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HOME STYLISH, SHADED, AND COOL THIS SUMMER

When temperatures climb in South Florida, thoughtful design can make all the difference. From ceiling fans and cooling materials to solar shades and covered outdoor retreats, these efficient upgrades help create a home that feels as comfortable as it looks. (alenacapradesigns.com)

FAN CLUB

Ceiling fans are a wise addition to any home, with today’s designs available in a range of finishes to complement virtually any decor. Beyond aesthetics, they can make a room feel up to four degrees cooler by improving air circulation. During warmer months, fans should rotate counterclockwise to push cool air downward. As a general rule, choose a fan between 44 and 52 inches for bedrooms, 52 to 60 inches for living rooms, and 60 inches or larger for expansive spaces with higher ceilings.

SOLAR STYLE

Solar shades have become one of the most popular window treatment options for good reason: they reduce glare, filter harsh sunlight, and provide daytime privacy while still allowing natural light indoors. Available in both manual and motorized options, solar shades work well on most windows and doors and can be layered with drapery panels for added softness and style. In bedrooms, blackout-lined curtains can significantly improve comfort, energy efficiency, and sleep quality.

OUTDOOR OASIS

LIGHTEN UP

The materials you select can have a major impact on how cool a home feels. For flooring, porcelain and ceramic tile are excellent choices—not only for durability, but because they naturally stay cooler underfoot. When it comes to furnishings, lightweight, breathable performance fabrics are ideal for South Florida living. Lighter upholstery colors help reflect rather than absorb heat, while today’s performance textiles offer stain resistance and easy maintenance, making light-colored furniture both stylish and practical.

Adding shade to outdoor living spaces can be beautifully accomplished with pergolas, which are especially wellsuited to Miami’s climate thanks to their durability and weather resistance. Today’s modern pergolas are available in custom colors, low-maintenance aluminum finishes, and motorized louvered designs that allow you to adjust sunlight, shade, and airflow with the touch of a button.

KEEP YOUR COOL

In South Florida, air conditioners work nearly year-round, making regular maintenance essential. And remember: systems are most likely to fail when they’re working the hardest. Scheduling preventative maintenance twice a year can help identify minor issues before they become costly repairs. Homeowners should also clean drain lines regularly and change filters every one to two months to improve efficiency and keep systems running smoothly through summer and beyond.

LAST WORD

ON THE RECORD WITH... RACHAEL RUSSELL SAIGER

Entrepreneur, fashion stylist, and mother of four, Rachael Russell Saiger has created a movement that merges fashion and philanthropy. Since founding Style Saves in 2011, she has turned that philosophy into one of the nation’s largest backto-school giveaways, serving more than 250,000 South Florida students and families. We chatted with Saiger ahead of Style Saves’ sixteenth annual Back-to-School event—August 8 and 9 at the Miami Beach Convention Center—about why every child deserves to start the school year feeling confident and her vision for the organization’s future. (stylesaves.org) —Jacquelynn Powers

X

Aventura: Style Saves has helped more than 250,000 students and families since its inception. Do you ever pause and think about the sheer scale of that impact?

Saiger: Absolutely. It’s incredible to think about, but what stays with me most isn’t the numbers, it’s the individual children and families we’ve met along the way. Every student represents a story, and that’s what keeps us going. What did back to school look like in your own childhood?

Going back to school was always exciting for me. I remember picking out a new backpack and school supplies, and I never took for granted how

special that feeling was. Every child deserves to start the school year with that same confidence.

Style Saves was founded on the idea that fashion can be a force for good. Can you elaborate?

What we wear affects how we feel. When a child feels confident, they’re more likely to participate, learn, and believe in themselves. Fashion is really about dignity, confidence, and opportunity. What’s something people would be surprised to learn about childhood poverty in Miami?

People often associate Miami with luxury, but many families here are working incredibly hard and still struggle to afford basic necessities. The need is much greater than most people realize. How has the annual Back-to-School event evolved since 2011?

We started by helping a few hundred students, and today we’re serving thousands each year. While we’ve grown tremendously, the heart of the event has never changed. What moment makes you emotional?

Watching a child see their new backpack or outfit for the first time never gets old. Seeing that smile, and the relief on a parent’s face, is something I’ll never stop being moved by.

Style Saves now manufactures its own private label products. Why did you pivot?

It allows us to provide high-quality essentials while stretching every donated dollar further. We can ensure students receive products we’re proud to give them, while serving more families.

Style Saves has worked with local volunteers and celebrities like Victoria and David Beckham. Do star-powered moments help shine a brighter light on the mission?

Their involvement brings attention to the work, but what I love most is that it inspires more people to get involved. Every volunteer and every supporter plays an equally important role in our mission.

Will there be any surprise guests this year?

You’ll have to wait and see! We always have amazing supporters who show up for our students, and we’re excited for what this year has in store.

How would you like Style Saves to grow in the next decade?

I want us to continue reaching more children while expanding the resources we provide. Our goal is to support students and families throughout the year and create lasting opportunities for success.
