FROM THE EDITOR

Fall VIBES

CAPEHART

Autumn is in the air, and though this fall season is unlike any we’ve experienced, exciting things are happening. Cultural institutions and local businesses have come out of hibernation, people are beginning to travel again, and events— like the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show—are slowly but surely coming back. That’s just the beginning. This month, we’re excited to highlight some of our local “Power Players” and their lifestyles in South Florida. First up are Shareef Malnik and Gabrielle Anwar, two incredible individuals who are even better together. Shareef, an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and renaissance man, and Gabrielle, a well-known actress, have found kindred spirits in each other. Not only are they successful in all their endeavors, they are also spiritual warriors who try every day to heighten their own awareness and to leave the world a little better than they found it. Read about this beautiful couple in “Hope & Love” on page 52. We also take you inside Dan Marino’s latest residence, in Weston, in “Home Team.” The Marinos downsized from a massive estate, but though this house is smaller in size, it is big on style, thanks to interior designer Phyllis Taylor. How does an NFL Hall of Famer live? Find out on page 60. Since we’re in the thick of an exciting football season, we bring you two “homegrown” NFL superstars: Joey and Nick Bosa, both South Florida residents and defensive linemen. Nick, who’s No. 17 in the NFL’s Top 100 Players list for 2020, plays for the San Francisco 49ers and Joey is entering his fifth season (with a $135 million contract extension, no less) with the Los Angeles Chargers. If that seems like a lot of talent for one family, that’s not even the half of it. Their father, John, was a defensive end for the Dolphins, and their uncle and cousin also went pro. Read about this incredible—and tight-knit—football family in “Bring on the Bosas,” on page 56. Enjoy the issue!

EMPOWERING PEOPLE. INSPIRING BUSINESSES. The stage was set. The lights were on. The room was packed. Expectation was through the roof. December 2019 marked the birth of the Maris Raffa Art Basel Experience, a gathering designed to inspire entrepreneurs with innovative content created to change their lives and businesses. Maris Raffa, the creator of the event, is also the founder of MQR Design, an interior design company servicing Miami, Orlando, New York, and her home country, Brazil. After attending various lectures in South America, Maris noticed the need to bring such an event to the Brazilians living in her backyard, Miami.

2021 SPEAKERS

CHRISTIAN BARBOSA

She handpicked speakers that impacted her the most and invited them for the adventure of a lifetime in the sunshine state. The event’s 2021 edition will be even bolder. With even more renowned speakers scheduled to appear, in a world that has changed so much in such a short time, there’s never been more of a need to gather and learn from one another. The 2021 edition promises to deliver even more life-changing content and strategies. All lectures will be translated into English, ensuring that all attendees make the most out of each session.

ART OASIS Museumgoers who lamented over the city’s public art closings can sing praise with the reopening of the Rubell Museum, located in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, a departure from its former Wynwood locale. Boasting 53,000 square feet of linear gallery and flexible performance space, the museum also features a courtyard garden, a bookstore, and an extensive art research library. “We’re fortunate that we can safely open and provide a sanctuary for Miamians in these difficult times,” says Mera Rubell, who is a co-founder along with her husband Don and son Jason. “Like this community, the art we present is incredibly diverse, and we hope that visitors find solace and joy within our museum’s galleries and garden.”

019_Aventurist_MIX_1020.indd 19

The Rubell Family Collection fills the venue’s 40 galleries with a five-decade chronicle of influential artists, moments, and movements in vital arts centers. Set to run through November, the show is drawn entirely from the family’s contemporary collection, recognized as one of the most important in the

country with over 7,200 works by more than 1,000 established and emerging artists. The Annabelle Selldorf–designed site is also home to newly opened Leku, the onproperty restaurant showcasing a menu of Basque specialties by chef Mikel Goikolea. (rubellmuseum.org) —Juliana Accioly OCTOBER 2020

HIGH SPIRITS

After surviving an earthquake in his home country in 2010, Haitian entrepreneur Dieuveny “DJ” Jean Louis launched Toast Vodka in the spirit of celebrating the good and simple moments of everyday life. “Experiencing a natural disaster made me realize how valuable life really is,” says Louis. “I always say that every day above ground is a good day to toast.” The creator of the world’s first ultrapremium, unflavored vodka made with coconut water now owns one of the few Black-owned distilleries, Toast Distillers, Inc., which can ship vodka right to your doorstep. The company’s profile includes a full range of spirits, including vodka, rum, gin, tequila, and whiskey. 22

This marks the thirteenth year of the American jewelry company’s partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Take your pick between a Cable collectibles ribbon bracelet or necklace in rose gold with pink sapphires, or complement any outfit with a delicate ribbon pin, crafted in sterling silver and pink enamel. The exclusive collection also features a pavé pinky ring and pendant necklace in pink sapphires and rose gold, and the brand’s most iconic piece— the Cable bracelet—is available in aluminum and pink acrylic. For the home, the Cable classic rose candle smells as lovely as it looks. David Yurman will donate 20 percent of the proceeds from the collection to BCRF. (davidyurman.com) —J.A.

ESCAPE LUXE Cabos

The newly rebranded Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal surfaces as a fresh but familiar showstopper on Mexico’s hautest coast By Paul Rubio

The Waldorf Astoria brand was eager to make a grand entrance into Mexico’s resort market, so they did, in the biggest—and smartest—way possible: by taking the helm of one of the country’s existing elite properties, The Resort at Pedregal on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. Rechristened the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos

035_ESCAPE-1020.indd 35

Pedregal in September 2019, the expansive beachfront retreat, which has defined Mexican coastal glamour for the past 11 years, has now entered its next chapter of greatness. The reflagging of the 24-acre resort has ushered in new programming, amenities, and soft enhancements; thankfully, the beloved aesthetic of Pedregal’s suites, villas, multi-bedroom casitas,

and private homes remains. From studded mesquite wood doors to handcrafted dark wood furnishings, embroidered lamp shades, and artistic textiles that depict colorful journeys through the nation’s diverse regions, each room exudes Mexican majesty while staying relevant to today’s interior design vernacular. The stunning design of the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal perfectly frames and accentuates Los Cabos’ desert-meets-the-sea beauty.

Cabo’s dreamy ocean views by way of sea-facing floor plans (each housing a panoramic terrace, inclusive of plunge pool) framing the many splendors of this tract of the Pacific Ocean. Think: the ultimate trifecta of sand, surf, and sky peppered with natural rock arches, breaching humpback whales, and technicolor sunrises and sunsets. Pedregal’s “new” Waldorf edge lies in augmented offerings both on- and off-property. At the more than 12,000-square-foot Waldorf Astoria Spa, choose from treatments inspired by the phases of the moon and authentic Mexican folk healing, complete with ingredients consecrated by curanderas (healers) and shamans. At cliffside El Farallón restaurant, begin the evening on the Champagne Terrace, where France’s finest bubbles are served by the glass and paired with the 36

Capture premium social media magic on the swings at the new beachfront Va y Viene Beach Bar, or stick with a tried-and-true Instagram favorite and chill in an amphibious lounger at the shallow end of the main infinity-edged pool. Outside the beauty of its picture-perfect 24-acre cove, Pedregal is branching into experiential travel with “Beyond the Beach: Baja Curated Explorations,” a collection of seven bucket-list adventures with pampering touches. Swim with massive whale sharks off La Paz and explore the mountainous terrain, waterfalls, and hot springs of Sierra de la Laguna, aka the Xanadu of Baja’s Sierra. Or opt to sail to Espiritu Santo Island and its surrounding archipelago, home to a stunning union of red sandstone cliffs and

crystalline waters, plus a resident colony of charismatic sea lions eager to entertain snorkelers with their curious, puppy-like behavior. Just when it seemed the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal had thought of everything the leisure or active traveler could want, the pandemic struck and rewrote the playbook on luxury hospitality. The property has adapted quickly with enhanced safety precautions such as completely disinfected rooms that are sealed after cleaning, “knock and go” drop-off room service, and the use of personal protective equipment by spa therapists. In addition, Pedregal has activated a number of stellar vacation packages that reflect the times. For the ultimate in social distancing, the “Private Passport to Pedregal,” a partnership with Schubach Aviation, provides private round-trip flights from anywhere in the U.S. to the Cabo San Lucas International Airport for groups of four to eight. It also includes private customs clearance on both ends of the trip, seven nights in a two-bedroom oceanview suite, and daily in-residence breakfast.

035_ESCAPE-1020.indd 37

Those looking into an idyllic tropical getaway for working or learning remotely can opt for the “Escape Longer” package, offering 30 percent off short-term residencies of more than a week in Pedregal’s residential-style villas and stand-alone homes, which boast fully equipped kitchens. Other perks include 24/7 dedicated butler service, 20 percent off spa and food and beverage, one private chef visit weekly, unlimited complimentary access to the kids’ club for two kids, and more. There’s also the new “Spanish Baja Cultural Immersion” program, a glorious week of Spanish lessons and excursions across the Baja peninsula. Through a big-deal rebranding—and even a global pandemic—the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal authors yet another chapter in the narrative on modern Mexican luxury. Heart of TEXAS The Driskill presents a slice of Lone Star HISTORY and HOSPITALITY By Mary Murray

Cattle Baron Suite

Long before Austin, Texas, gained a worldwide reputation for eclectic art, ample live music, and festivals such as South by Southwest and Austin City Limits, it helped to define the very essence of the Lone Star State. Now the eleventh largest city in the U.S., Austin boasts a vibe all its own, one steeped in tradition yet on the cutting edge of all things tech and culture. 38

As Austin began evolving in earnest in the second half of the 1800s, it grew around three primary institutions: the state capital building, the University of Texas, and The Driskill Hotel (driskillhotel.com). From the impressive columns that greet you at the entrance to the stained-glass dome in the lobby, The Driskill drips with a sense of sophistication that harkens back to its original splendor. The Driskill’s extensive history, and commitment to fine Texan hospitality, is apparent throughout. A portrait of namesake and founder Jesse Driskill still boasts the bullet holes it earned during a Wild West–style shootout. The hallways were designed to be particularly wide in order to accommodate the large dresses that were all the rage in the 1880s. In 1934, the Texas Rangers plotted the

capture of infamous crime couple Bonnie and Clyde in the hotel’s Jim Hogg Parlor. A suite bears the name of President Lyndon B. Johnson, who had his first date with his wife at The Driskill and watched the returns of many elections there, as well. While The Driskill was also the site of one of the first indoor bathrooms in Austin, this luxe property has come a long way in the accomLyndon B. Johnson Suite

modations department. Its 189 rooms feature custom furniture, vintage-inspired touches, and demure shades of steely gray, plum, beige, and gold. The 14 suites take the theming a step further; the top-tier Cattle Baron Suite is awash in worn leather and rustic details, while the aforementioned Lyndon B. Johnson Suite serves up presidential blue hues and a bathroom dedicated to Lady Bird Johnson’s penchant for Texas bluebonnet flowers. The hotel’s communal areas take a page out of the history books, too. At the 1886 Café & Bakery, guests can indulge in Texas-shaped waffles and a signature chocolate cake amid Victorian furnishings. The Driskill Bar is quintessential Texas, complete with cow hides and a Barvo Walker bronze sculpture entitled The Widow Maker. The Driskill Grill honors the state in its farmto-table philosophy, culling the majority of its ingredients from within 10 miles. The divine charcuterie appetizer, for example, includes selections from Salt & Time, an Austin-based butchery that specializes in artisan dry-cured

WILD THING

Believe the hype: Chevy’s new mid-engine Corvette is one AMAZING supercar By Howard Walker

If you’re a lover of adrenaline-pumping, finger-tingling, punch-in-thesolar-plexus supercars, I have two little words for you: New Corvette. Just feast your eyes on the thing. It has more visual drama than RuPaul and Lady Gaga combined. More air-gulping intakes than an F-22 Raptor. More ripped muscles than Sly in his prime. Even while standing still, it looks as if it’s slicing through the atmosphere at 200 mph. When GM unveiled the eighth-generation ’Vette in Summer 2019, it sent shock waves through the supercar world. This was no mere reiteration of America’s favorite sports car—it was a complete reinvention of the brand. After 66 years of having its engine up front, this new C8 plants its honking 6.2-liter V-8 right behind the driver. Yet delivering a mid-engine Corvette with almost 500 horsepower, sensational performance, otherworldly handling, and a huge step up in quality wasn’t enough for GM. No, it had to seal the deal with a surprising sticker. In this rarified section of the supercar market, where entry prices start at well above $150,000, a nicely equipped “base” Corvette Stingray costs—drumroll, please—$59,995. There are Chevy pickups that retail for more. Even when you start adding on options, like the must-have $5,000 Z51 Performance package, with its beefier brakes, freer-breathing exhaust, and MagneRide adaptive suspension, you’re still only looking at around $80,000. This is the best-value supercar money can buy. Period.

Some of you may be wondering why it’s such a big deal to have a Corvette with an engine amidships. It’s all about handling poise and balance. Whereas the last-generation Corvette C7 was a brutish blunt instrument, this C8 is a marvel of driving sophistication. How sophisticated? After a week of runs to Trader Joe’s, curve-carving on interstate on-ramps, and foot-to-the-floor thrill rides, I would have happily donated a kidney to have kept this slingshot in my driveway. This puppy is fast, blisteringly so. With 495 hp, 470 lb-ft of torque, and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic, the rear-drive C8 can catapult off the line and hit 60 mph in a pulmonary-pounding 2.9 seconds. Top speed? That would be 194 mph (or 184 with the Z51 Performance package). Unlike the previous C7 ’Vette, which had an exhaust that growled

40 AVENTURA MAGAZINE

like an angry Rottweiler, this new mid-engine rocket ship sounds less raucous and more refined, though still authoritative when you dial up Sport+. And it’s an absolute joy to drive. You sit in body-clamping bucket seats, hang on to a rectangular wheel, and feel like you’re in the cockpit of a military jet. Heads-Up Display on the windshield, check. Touchscreen angled toward the driver, check. Switches and buttons everywhere, check, check. While the upcoming Florida-friendly convertible version will be worth waiting for, in Corvette tradition the C8 coupe comes standard with a lightweight roof panel that stows in the trunk. When removed, it’s easy to run at speeds of up to, say, 80 without too much wind buffeting. For a supercar, the C8 is surprisingly accommodating. With the top in place, the rear trunk can swallow a couple of golf bags. Pop the trunk at the front (the frunk?) and there’s space for two well-stuffed duffels. HIGH SEAS

FINS UP! JIMMY BUFFETT’s new fishing machine is a 1,200-hp power cat designed for speed and comfort By Howard Walker These days, the Son of a Son of a Sailor (you may know him as Parrothead-in-Chief Jimmy Buffett) doesn’t like to hang around when he’s heading out to his favorite fishing spots. That’s why the “Margaritaville” chorus leader’s newest boat—a stunning, 42-foot, custom power catamaran dubbed Last Mango and painted Buffett’s favorite shade of seafoam green—can top out at more than 60 mph and cruise effortlessly at 40. “We have four Yamaha F300 outboards, so 1,200 horsepower in total,” says Vinnie LaSorsa, Buffett’s longtime captain and BFF (Best Fishing Friend). “At 6,000 rpm we’ve seen 61 mph. It’s a fun boat that gets us there and back fast.” After spending the summer with Mr. B, as LaSorsa calls him, chasing bluefin tuna off Cape Cod and Nantucket, Last Mango will soon be heading down to Florida for the winter, docking at Pompano Beach. Buffett and LaSorsa are already planning wahoo-fishing excursions to the Bahamas and sailfish hunting in the Keys. 42

“Since we took delivery, we’ve been using it a lot,” LaSorsa says. “We’ve probably put 400 hours on the engines and covered over 7,000 miles. It’s been all over the place.” Buffett, who splits his time between homes in Montauk, Palm Beach, and “a little trailer in Malibu,” had pretty specific requirements for his new boat. After years casting a line from his beloved West Palm Beach–built Rybovich Express sportfisher, it seems Mr. B was looking for something that went a little faster, but not at the expense of comfort. He loved the look, performance, and smooth ride of the ultra-sleek, 42-foot power catamaran from South Carolina–based Freeman Boatworks. But, according to LaSorsa, he really wanted a boat with a pilothouse instead of an open center console.

AVENTURA MAGAZINE

042_HIGHSEAS_1020.indd 42

9/10/20 1:27 PM

“We talked long and hard with Billy Freeman about building us a pilothouse version of the 42, but they were too backed up with orders. We had to come up with a plan B.” The solution? Freeman agreed to provide a stripped-out 42 hull and deck to the revered nautical artisans at Merritt’s Boat & Engine Works in Pompano, who designed and built a custom carbon-fiber pilothouse and finished off the boat. As LaSorsa notes, “Jimmy only had three requests: power-opening windows for the sides of the house, shock-absorbing seats, and a retractable power awning for the cockpit. Oh, and 58 rod holders so you can fish from pretty much anywhere on the boat.” Why was a pilothouse so important to the 73-year-old singer-songwriter? According to Captain Vinnie it can get cold and foggy up in the Northeast, so it provides a warm retreat. Then in the midday heat of Florida and the Bahamas, it becomes an air-conditioned haven. As you might expect, Last Mango boasts a very cool sound system. Designed for the boat by JL Audio, it pumps out Buffett’s favorite playlists through speakers in the cabin, cockpit, bow, and even up on the tower. “When Mr. B’s on the boat he’s pretty much exclusively at the helm,” adds LaSorsa. “Being behind the wheel for him is the relaxing part.” Any scary moments while out on the ocean? LaSorsa says he won’t forget a trip to the Bahamas earlier this year, in an area southwest of the Berry Islands known as The Pocket. “We were heading down to the Exumas and got into a heavy southeaster with wind against tide. The seas were a solid 8 to 10 feet. The boat did pretty well, but it was not comfortable. It was the roughest conditions I’ve been in.” Even when Buffett isn’t wetting a line, it’s rare to see Last Mango tied to the dock. LaSorsa is the founder of Freedom Fighter Outdoors, a charitable organization that works with injured service members. With Buffett’s support and occasional participation, LaSorsa organizes fishing expeditions for wounded veterans. To help raise money, Buffett and LaSorsa created the Last Mango Boatworks website (lastmangoboatworks.com) selling cool Last Mango–logoed apparel, jewelry, and more. «

THE

Plastic Surgery Innovator ONE OF THE NATION’S LEADING PLASTIC SURGEONS, DR. ANDREW AMUNATEGUI BRINGS THE LATEST ADVANCEMENTS TO CLIENTS SEEKING NATURAL RESULTS. BY MICHELLE PAYER With extensive training and more than 20 years at his Aventura practice, Dr. Andrew Amunategui, MD, P.A., has been instrumental in enhancing and reshaping the cosmetic surgery field. By continuously staying abreast of new, modern treatments, he offers clients technological advancements that increase effectiveness, decrease down time and offer natural results for face, body and hair restoration procedures. With breast augmentation on the rise, Dr. Amunategui opened a new branch in his practice: Breast.Bar, dedicated solely to aesthetic breast surgery. Using Crisalix Advanced Digital Imaging – either virtually or in-person -- patients obtain a realistic 3D preview of results prior to surgery. Tremendously popular for its accuracy, Dr. Amunategui uses the Crisalix for rhinoplasty procedures, as well. One of the nation’s leading plastic surgeons, Dr. Amunategui is a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Has there been increased interest in cosmetic surgery? Yes, with mommy makeovers and buttock lifts, including our new “BBL-D-lite,” – unique liposuction and lipo-sculpturing combination without fat transfer -- in highest demand. Although this procedure requires more time and is technically and physically more demanding for the surgeon, the results truly reach a new level. Why do you think people are deciding to get procedures now? I think in this age of coronavirus, people are saying to themselves: “why wait until tomorrow to do something for myself, to look the way I want to look.” Of course, many people are working from home or not working

at all, which gives them an abundance of time to recover from procedures. Interestingly, there has been a significant increase in eyelid surgery as everyone is now wearing masks and bringing more attention to the eyes. We want everybody to get through this- -while looking their best!! What pandemic protocols have you introduced? To face the challenge of continuing to provide our unique, boutique type experience in a safe environment for our aesthetic patients, we’ve instituted stricter than required safety features in our newly remodeled office. These include handwashing and sanitization, masks, plexiglass dividers, and triple filtration air circulation in the office and operating room. The triple filtration system, which includes

ultraviolet light, HEPA filtration, and charcoal filtration in the aesthetician room, has made our patients feel even safer and more comfortable during treatments. All surgical patients are required to have Covid testing immediately prior to surgery, and I wear an N-95 mask when I am in contact with patients, whether for a consultation, injection, surgery, or post-op visit. Q+A

What are the newest techniques in dentistry you’re offering clients? In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, many patients have gained weight and aren’t sleeping well. I’m excited to announce we’ve started using a new treatment that helps patients sleep and dream again. The Vivos System treats mild to moderate sleep apnea by using the tongue as a retainer, stimulating stem cells to grown bone and opening one’s airway. Many people don’t realize that cavities and fractured teeth are very closely related to sleeping disorders. Breathing through your mouth changes the pH of your saliva and reduces the good bacteria, enzymes and proteins which are there to help prevent cavities.

BEST SELF.indd 45

What do you tell people who are avoiding dental work during the pandemic? I feel the safest in my office. Patients are like family to me and I will do everything to ensure the people I care about are safe. Patients are screened on their phones and when they arrive via temperature checks. We sanitize everything from the pens patients use to the counters they lean on and door handles they touch. If they read a magazine, they’re invited to keep it or we throw it out. Our waiting room is usually limited to one person. We sterilize everything between patients and use a fogger with hypochlorous acid, which is 100 times more powerful than Clorox. We also have a Level 4 air purifier in every room that eliminates 99.9 percent of bacteria and viruses in the air. The staff and I are literally covered head to toe with N95 masks, face shields, gowns and shoe covers.

What sets Aventura Dental Group apart from other practices? Patients tell me all the time that the quality of work we provide is hard to beat. We care, we listen, we use the best supplies and equipment and we always give patients multiple treatment options. In my experience, doing things the right way the first time is better than a bunch of compromised treatments. THE

Dermatology Pioneer AS DIRECTOR OF THE CENTERS FOR COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT AND CLINICAL AND COSMETIC RESEARCH SINCE THEIR INCEPTION 25 YEARS AGO, DR. MARK NESTOR PIONEERS DERMATALOGIC ENHANCEMENTS, TREATMENT INNOVATION AND INDUSTRY BREAKTHROUGHS FROM HIS SOUTH FLORIDA PRACTICE. BY MICHELLE PAYER Nearly 30 years specializing in all areas of dermatology, skin cancer surgery, skin cancer radiation therapy and all areas of aesthetics have firmly established Mark Nestor, MD, PhD, as a globally renowned practitioner, author, lecturer and instructor of clinical and cosmetic dermatology. Dr. Nestor is recognized as a world expert in topical pharmaceuticals and cosmeceuticals, cutaneous laser surgery, life-saving therapies and anti-aging beautification treatments. He is President of the American Cutaneous Oncology Society and a past President of the American Society for Photodynamic Therapy, the International Society for Cosmetic and Laser Surgeons and the Florida Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery.

What are the most requested procedures right now? In the age of Covid, it’s critical that we keep our skin healthy, and it’s especially important to be proactive in early skin cancer detection, which saves lives. Aesthetically, improvements in the skin tone and texture and the use of fillers and botulinum toxins are always requested. We realize that using botulinum toxin not only makes us appear more attractive, but it has a profound effect on how we feel, improving our sense of well-being and impacting how others feel because we’re not frowning at them. This is critical when we are wearing masks and the only thing people see are our eyes, forehead and frowns. What are the newest dermatologic advancements? Dermatology must be divided into its components: Medical dermatology has made tremendous treatment advances for issues including psoriasis, acne and

eczema using lasers. Skin cancer treatment has evolved dramatically and includes topical treatments, advanced surgical treatments and superficial radiation therapy. Aesthetic Dermatology has evolved dramatically in all areas including the use of lasers, energy-based devices, new fillers and botulinum toxins and other innovative treatments. We have over 50 lasers and devices in our center to offer the best technology available. What accounts for your tremendous success? Certainly, our center is unique. I lecture on new procedures and innovations all over the world and our research center is involved in many new innovations and FDA trials both clinically and aesthetically. Over the last 28 years I have prided myself in following scientific advancements and always listening to my patients. The physician patient relationship is a special one and requires communication, trust, and most of all, a clear understanding of patient needs.

What Covid-related safety enhancements have you introduced? We have rigorous protocols that meet strict CDC guidelines to keep patients and staff safe. Every patient must answer questions to ensure they are healthy. We have virtually closed our waiting room and bring patients directly into a treatment room. Everyone wears masks, the rooms are disinfected between each patient and staff wears masks and shields to protect patients’ health. MARK S. THE

Eye Master A PASSION FOR VISION, EYE CARE, CUTTING-EDGE TECHNIQUES AND PATIENT WELL-BEING HAS MADE DR. ALAN MENDELSOHN SOUTH FLORIDA’S EYE EXPERT. BY MICHELLE PAYER Dr. Alan Mendelsohn, MD, FACS, after examining your eyes can tell you precisely everything going on, optimal treatments, and very importantly, preventive care to keep your eyes healthy and seeing well based on his vast library of knowledge gained from 35 years in ophthalmology. Known as “the physician’s physician” for his reputation treating hundreds of South Florida doctors and their families, Dr. Mendelsohn is often the ophthalmologist fellow professionals travel to see for a second opinion. Fellowship training at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute was the start of his storied South Florida career, and patients say they’re grateful he stayed. While noted for his expertise in all eye-related issues, Dr. Mendelsohn specializes in cataract surgery, for which he recently trailblazed a new procedure: Five-Minute Laser cataract surgery.

Q+A

What is the Five-Minute Laser cataract surgery you’ve pioneered? Cataract surgery used to be highly invasive whereby doctors gave patients a shot to the eye, made a large incision, then closed it with numerous sutures. Now, a laser can perform 90 percent of the procedure flawlessly in about 30 seconds. From start to finish, this painless procedure takes only about five minutes, which includes an intraocular lens (IOL) implant. There are no shots, no stitches and no patches. The patient can resume normal activities, including driving, working and exercising, the very next day. This laser cataract procedure is safer and provides far superior vision than the older, invasive techniques.

BEST SELF.indd 47

What are you doing to personalize patient experience and heighten comfort level? I am an ardent believer in one-on-one concierge care for every patient, spending a lot of time explaining my findings, the ramifications of these findings, and optimal treatment to take care of the diagnoses. All my patients are given my personal cell phone number and can reach me 365/24/7, except when I am in surgery. This contrasts with almost every other ophthalmologist in Aventura and the surrounding area that sold their practices to large private equity corporations, resulting in patient care in a chaotic, impersonal, clinic setting. One will always experience punctual and quality care at Eye Surgeons & Consultants.

What has accounted for your success in such a competitive field? Excellent clinical and surgical outcomes are my forte! Furthermore, always being available to my patients with concerns or emergencies is of paramount importance to both my patients and to me. We are open six days a week, including Sunday mornings to help facilitate top-notch care for our patients with busy schedules. THE

Vein Authority RECOGNIZED EXPERT DR. SUSAN B. FOX IS THE MASTER OF VEIN ISSUES, YET THERE IS MUCH MORE TO HER PRACTICE THAT KEEPS SOUTH FLORIDIANS MOBILE, HEALTHY AND GLOWING. BY MICHELLE PAYER It would be hard to identify a doctor who knows more about varicose veins and vein treatment than Susan B. Fox, DO, RPVI, FSVM. For more than 20 years, she has been the leading authority on vein issues, always staying at the forefront of its therapy, first by pioneering endovenous laser ablation in Cleveland, Ohio, then by doing foam sclerotherapy for decades. Her laser research led to acquiring the most modern and sought-after equipment for her practice to treat venous disease, spider veins, skin spots and discolorations, perform hair removal, offer laser facials, remove tattoos and treat acne scars. For more than a decade, Dr. Fox has taught physicians and medical personnel about venous disease treatment, and with her team, has performed tens of thousands of vein procedures.

What are the most requested procedures right now? At the moment, people’s top concerns are how their legs feel and how their skin looks. People have been traveling less, walking more and have noticed their legs swelling and feeling heavy. During this slower pace of life, they’re taking the time to come in to treat leg and vein issues. Others are keen to improve their skin texture and appearance, especially as they’re wearing less makeup and using face masks at the moment. One common complaint is the issue of acne caused by face masks. To treat problem areas and create glowing skin, we offer several peels, the SkinWave HydraFacial, Vivace Microneedling and lasers and Aquagold to refine the skin and help it rebuild itself. The Vivace device is fabulous for

rejuvenating the skin, shrinking pores, refining fine lines and wrinkles and rebuilding collagen and elastin. What are you doing to enhance client peace of mind during Covid? My office staff knows me very well and I have been a germophobe for years. During the time that we were closed for Covid-19, I researched what could make our procedures safe for both our staff and patients. I invested in everything I could to keep everyone as safe as possible We screen all patients entering our office, limit the people entering the office to only the patient and caregivers, take everyone’s temperatures, Everyone must wear a mask, sanitize and/or wash their hands upon entry. Patients are directly escorted to an exam room; no one waits in the waiting room. For

any cosmetic procedure, the patient is shielded with a plexiglass covering and our staff wears an N 95 or KN 95 mask with another plexiglass shield over their face. In addition, we have air purifiers in treatment rooms that have HEPA filters and UV-C light. We clean all surfaces with Cavicide between patients and do everything we can to maintain a hygienic atmosphere. After hours, we pay cleaning crews to deep clean and maintain everything as clean as we possibly can. Finally, we run air purifiers all night long. DR. SUSAN B. INVASIVE AND AESTHETIC FOOT SURGERY THERE’S A REASON PEOPLE FLOCK FROM FAR-FLUNG LOCALES TO DR. ABRAHAM WAGNER’S HOLLYWOOD PODIATRY PRACTICE AS HE PIONEERS NEW PROCEDURES AND GENTLY CHANGES ONE LIFE AT A TIME. BY MICHELLE PAYER Dr. Abraham Wagner reads a patient text: “Got a pedicure a couple of weeks ago for the first time in 25 years. You changed my life.” These types of messages virally spread about the founder of JAWS Podiatry and The MIFAS (Minimally Invasive Foot & Ankle Surgery) Institute. As the global pioneer for The MIFAS movement, Dr. Wagner sees an increasing trend of personal importance placed on foot beauty, especially in warm-weather destinations where sandals are customary footwear. Unlike traditional, oldschool methods that required large incisions, Dr. Wagner and his stellar medical team perform every procedure under local anesthesia in their office-based surgical suite with a few tiny stitches, allowing patients to stroll out of his office with less pain, quicker recovery times and newly discovered foot beauty. His revolutionary procedures include the use of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and stem cells for remarkable results that have led to nearly 400 coveted five-star Healthgrade reviews. Dr. Wagner holds a Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine degree from Barry University and completed his surgical residency at South Miami/Baptist hospital, renowned for its case volume and diversity. He is also board-certified with the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.

Q+A

Why is The MIFAS Institute so ground-breaking? Beyond mainstream bunions, corns and hammertoes, you get into the aesthetics that people are now seeking out – toe lengthening and shortening and “toe-tucks,” for example. These are things people don’t talk about, not even to their significant others, so when they find someone they can speak to openly and comfortably, it’s a huge burden that’s been lifted. Individuals from all over the world from all walks of life come to The MIFAS Institute so we can change their lives -- and it’s instant. The patient looks down at their transformed feet after surgery and cries from relief and joy. Whether it’s a simple hammertoe or bunion, long toes, congenital deformities – if the

BEST SELF.indd 49

patient can think it, we can fix it using our state-ofthe-art minimally invasive techniques. What is the Brazilian Foot Lift you’ve developed? There are a lot of people who have lost fat on the bottom of their feet. I work with a double boardcertified plastic surgeon who does a minimally invasive lipo aspiration; we then take the fat that contains stem cells and create a Tempurpedic mattress to restore the fat pad on the bottom of the foot. What is the difference between that and the Brazilian Anti-Aging Foot Lift? It’s not only hands that reveal signs of age; the feet

do, as well. People are becoming more mindful of their feet and their appearance just like any body part. Women especially lose fat on the top of their feet, exposing tendons and veins. We refill that entire area to make it look smoother and restore a youthful beauty to feet that look beautiful in sandals and open-toed shoes. DR. With all the services you provide, what is your favorite? I mostly enjoy surgery of the face, eyes and nose, while emphasizing that I never want to change the way someone looks but rather enhance their features (rhinoplasty) or rejuvenate (turn back the clock) with natural, yet long-lasting results.

What are you doing to keep clients safe and enhance their peace of mind during Covid-19? Our policies involve using questionnaires, temperature checks and careful operative planning with necessary lab work. I have also implemented changes to the facility from strict scheduling protocols to air purifying to keep our patients safe.

What are the most requested procedures at the moment? Mostly surgical: eyelid surgery, face and neck lift, rhinoplasty, liposuction, and breast (lifting, augmentation, reduction). I also perform tailored rejuvenation with fillers, toxins and lasers.

What factors distinguish you from other plastic surgeons & centers? Patients appreciate my honesty and doing the right thing for them. I often turn down requests for procedures that I feel are unnecessary or are not in the patients best interest. I feel that our patients matter most.

You have a menu of services tailored specifically to men. How are their needs different? Men are also interested in plastic surgery. It’s not only about looking younger, but also about wellbeing. I see men who say they look older than they feel, which takes a psychological toll on them. They want to look and feel their best and it is very gratifying to help them get there. Fascinated by surgery at the feet of his physician grandfather, Dr. Andres Sarraga had no doubt the profession was his true calling. Not content to be merely “good,” he aimed to be the best, with a full residency in General Surgery and Plastic & Reconstructive surgery, followed with a fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery with one of the discipline’s foremost leaders. Valuing wisdom from experience, he joined Dr. Michael Storch’s practice in 2012. Working alongside him, Dr. Sarraga appreciated “sharing the new with the traditional” and took over the practice in 2016. Dr. Sarraga regularly performs oculoplastic & facial rejuvenation surgery - of the face, neck and eyes – rhinoplasty, and cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery. He explains that his approach is to help patients become a better version of themselves and boost their selfconfidence. Dr. Sarraga is board certified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and an active member of the prestigious American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS), the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Southeaster Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (SESPRS) and an officer of the Miami Society of Plastic Surgeons.

& LOVE While leading busy lives, Shareef Malnik and Gabrielle Anwar share a passion for helping others BY LINDA MARX

Restaurateur Shareef Malnik and actress Gabrielle Anwar met in 2010 and later wed in 2015 at The Ranch at Rock Creek in Phillipsburg, Montana.

Over the years, Miami-born adventure seeker Shareef Malnik has been eager to take chances in pursuit of excitement, exotic experiences, and learning how to master arduous sports. He has ice climbed the Cascade Mountains, run with the bulls in Pamplona, and become a black belt in Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He’s appeared in several films, including Just Cause and The Blackout, and executive produced a documentary. He also holds a law degree and an MBA from the University of Miami, and now he’s tackling his latest challenge: the reopening of The Forge, a Miami Beach staple that’s attracted celebrities and locals alike. The son of The Forge founder Alvin “Al” Malnik and his first wife, Debbie, Shareef Malnik took over the elegant farm-to-table restaurant in 1991. For all his professional commitments, Malnik notes that he makes his well-being a priority as well. “I want to be a better person,” says the 62-year-old from his circa-1924 Coconut Grove home shaded by 100-year-old trees. “I want to be stronger, more athletic, have better health, and improve my spirituality every single day.” His fast-paced life in cities like Miami, New York, and London would run most people down, but Malnik says he’s learned from each experience and credits his positive outlook on life to his wife, Gabrielle Anwar. The actress shares his passions for philanthropy, creativity, and spirituality. “We are blessed that we found each other,” he says. “We each have our own interests, yet we share so many things. We are fortunate and do not take each other for granted.” The couple met 10 years ago during Anwar’s fortieth birthday dinner at Paradise Farms in Homestead. She started up a conversation with Malnik, who was selecting field-to-table foods for a menu at The Forge. They married in 2015.

JOHN A SUTTON

Born in Berkshire, England, Anwar left her rural Windsor home at age 13 to study drama and dance in London. At age 15, she landed a role in the BBC miniseries Hideaway and left school to travel with a tutor. “I thought I had died and gone to heaven after studying ballet and Shakespeare, then getting paid to actually do these things,” she recalls. She’s since starred in more than 45 films and TV performances, including her breakout role in Scent of a Woman. She is also known for playing Princess Margaret in Showtime's The Tudors. The busy actress moved to Miami to star as Fiona Glenanne, an ex-IRA soldier, in USA TV Network’s original series Burn Notice. Today the mother of three balances her blended family life with her blossoming career. She’s currently working on more than a dozen projects, including an independent film that she hopes to direct and star in. “I have been writing a lot and am completely possessed by it,” says Anwar. “I want to have more control, a voice with material that is important to me. I want to be more female-sensitive in what I say.” Anwar recently launched a parenting website called The Playhouse to help parents and children with teen angst and social acceptance. She sits on the board of Pikler USA, for which she speaks on early childhood care and its relation to mental health. She’s also active with The Centre for Integral Wisdom, a think tank dedicated to partnering with outstanding thought leaders and change agents to transform and evolve the source code of culture. “I am still rebellious and have big ideas,” says Anwar. “I like to influence others in everything I do.” Even though the couple has offices inside their home, they rarely see each other during the day. Malnik is usually at his Nextwave Funding office (he serves as chairman of the board) or meetings about his repositioning of The Forge. The romantic restaurant/boîte, which his father bought in 1968 and designed with stunning furnishings and European art, has been reimagined and renovated many times over the years. This new unveiling, however, will usher in a new chapter when The Forge reopens in the coming months after being shuttered for more than a year. “The

Florida, for which Malnik is chairman of the board emeritus. He was introduced to the charity in 1995 and became drawn to its mission to create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. Over the years, he has worked in all areas of the charity, making it bigger and better, and instituting positive, business-savvy initiatives to raise awareness. “We have raised $30 million since the first ball,” notes Malnik, who’s preparing for a February fundraising gala in Miami. Norman Wedderburn, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida sings Malnick’s praises: “Make-A-Wish is in Shareef’s

DNA. He incorporates the charity into every aspect of his life—family, professional, and civic.” Once Malnik brought his wife on board as co-host of the annual ball’s silent auction, their own style of glitz and glamour began dazzling guests at Miami’s dreamy InterContinental hotel. With big-ticket acts such as Steven Tyler, John Legend, Marc Anthony, and Lenny Kravitz, the event draws prominent residents—and signals Malnik’s global reach as a philanthropist. “Shareef serves as a true beacon for our community,” shares David Grutman, founder

of Groot Hospitality. “He is a role model when it comes to philanthropy. When you spend time with him, the will to give and make Miami a better place is contagious.” Anwar also admires her husband’s goals and accomplishments. She is proud to be by his side at Make-A-Wish events and every day of their lives, whether they are walking in the Grove, practicing yoga at home, or visiting an Italian monastery. “Shareef and I are happy,” she says. “I found my Zorba the Buddha, an artistic and spiritual man with one foot in a successful business. He takes charge, and I need that. It doesn’t get better than this.” « OCTOBER 2020

or Joey and Nick Bosa, the love of football is in their blood. The brothers grew up cheering for their favorite teams every week during the cherished fall season, but Nick’s earliest memories of the sport are the mementos sprinkled throughout his childhood home in Miami. They belonged to his father, former Miami Dolphins defensive end John Bosa, who played in the NFL for four years beginning in 1987. Even with a lineage of athletes in the family (their uncle and cousin also went pro), the brothers showed a superior knack for the game that’s since propelled them from sunny South Florida into the wider world of professional football. At 25 and 23, respectively, Joey and Nick represent the NFL’s future. A defensive end for the Los Angeles Chargers, Joey is entering his fifth season and in August signed a five-year, $135-million contract extension, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. Nick is gearing up for his second season as a defensive end with the San Francisco 49ers, after becoming a rookie sensation and playing in Super Bowl LIV. The brothers’ rise to high-caliber play started early. “Nick was always a super football fan, even when he was really little,” recalls their mother, Cheryl Bosa, from her house on Fort Lauderdale Beach. When older brother Joey began playing, Nick took note. At 7 years old, he convinced his parents to let him play as well. “It was an easy thing for me to start doing and fall in love with,” says Nick. In addition to football, the brothers dabbled in other sports, from soccer to baseball to basketball. Every step of the way, Cheryl and John offered their support. Cheryl notes that

056_BOSA_1020.indd 58

many people noticed their exceptional innate talent, especially Nick’s. “We’d be at the field and strangers would walk up to us and say, ‘What is going on here?’ [John and I] would be like, ‘We’re not quite sure. This is wacky.’” Football eventually became the Bosa brothers’ focus once they started school at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, which has a national reputation for producing top athletes. “St. Thomas is a school where you don’t have too many multisport athletes, especially when they’re really focused on one or the other,” says Joey, who Cheryl describes as “intense” growing up. Nick, she points out, was the opposite. “Nick was always really

funny. Goofy, silly, always making us laugh. He’s a funny guy. Not real serious.” The two played on the varsity team for one year together. Nick, a freshman at the time, needed to put on weight and started seriously lifting weights in hopes of one day being recruited. Joey’s future in the NFL became a possibility when he received an offer from Alabama his sophomore year. “I was a backup on varsity, and I went to [Alabama’s] camp and really didn’t see myself as anything special out of the bunch there,” he says. He was one of two athletes who received an offer—a pivotal moment that opened up the option for additional college offers. “I went on to

have a really good junior year. Right around then is when it turned into a job.” Joey ultimately committed to playing football at The Ohio State University. Three years later, Nick followed in his footsteps, becoming a Buckeye and later forgoing his senior year to enter the NFL Draft. The Bosas made history in 2019 when the 49ers drafted Nick second overall, making them the only family in the history of the NFL to have three defensive linemen picked in the first round. (The Mannings, who are all quarterbacks, are the only clan with a similar accomplishment.) Both Joey and Nick received the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. While Joey’s family celebrated in person in 2016, Nick was unable to attend the ceremony because he was preparing for Super Bowl LIV, which was hosted in Miami Gardens. Nick looks back on the event with mixed emotions. Added pressure and media attention prompted nerves for the first-time Super Bowler, who was playing in his hometown. “The whole build-up part is not my favorite, but once you get out on the field, it’s just football, so it was a lot of fun to play and to have my family there watching me,” he says. “It didn’t turn out the way I wanted, but it was good motivation for the rest of my career.” During playoffs, Cheryl attended two of Nick’s games with Joey, which she says was a “really cool” experience. The mother of two powerhouses has been spotted wearing a sewn-together jersey, with one half supporting the Chargers and the other repping the 49ers. “I’m on a plane every weekend. Usually when the schedule comes out, I set them up, side by side, and try to figure out my schedule. There are very few weekends that I don’t travel.” The Bosa brothers both sport No. 97 in honor of their father, who now makes his living as an entrepreneur and resides in Fort Lauderdale and Colorado. Cheryl, who represents Engel & Völkers’ sports and entertainment division, has been living in Fort Lauderdale for the last 10 years following two decades in Miami. She handles luxury properties, including 30 Thirty North Ocean, where Nick recently closed on a two-story condo. The property, which will serve as home base for Nick in the off-season, features modern architecture, sprawling ocean views, large open terraces, and resort-style amenities, including a clubhouse lounge and a well-equipped fitness center. It’s also steps from the beach—a spot Nick looks forward to exploring.

Nick Bosa will call his two-story condo at 30 Thirty North Ocean home in the off-season.

With Joey close by, the brothers spent this summer training six days a week at their local facility, putting in the work needed to ensure a successful season. Sharing similar styles of play, they often look to one another for ways to improve. “I’m sure when Nicky sees me run a fast time or I see him run a fast time, it adds a little boost of motivation for the next round,” says Joey. With Joey entering his fifth year in the NFL, he’s determined to pick up more wins. “At this point in my career, I kind of know what I’m going to do out there and hold myself to a really high standard,” he says. “But what’s important now is just winning and getting to the Super Bowl.” Rumors have swirled about a Bosa brothers’ reunion on the line following Super Bowl LIV, but that’s been squashed with Joey’s contract-exten-

sion signing that was captured on HBO’s Hard Knocks. “It would be a dream come true, but at the same time, it would be an interesting dynamic,” says Joey. “We’re both very competitive.” For now, the Bosa brothers are living in the moment. “My goal is to get back to my teammates and go win the Super Bowl,” shares Nick, who in July was named No. 17 on the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2020 list. As for Cheryl, she’ll be cheering on her boys from the sidelines as she did in their early days of play. She often reflects on their long journey to becoming who they are today. “I think it’s really cool when what you love to do, you happen to be one of the best at it,” she says. “How many people get to say that? I love that for them. I’m very proud of them.” « OCTOBER 2020

HOME TEAM Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino and his wife, Claire, are at home in their newly renovated residence in Weston By Marina Brown | Photography Deborah Whitlaw Llewellyn

t’s not the first time that interior designer Phyllis Taylor has teamed up with NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino and his wife, Claire. From a 15,000-square-foot estate to their newly renovated 3,000-square-foot ranch-style house in Weston (and many in between), Taylor has made it her business to know the colors, the favorite

pieces, and the lifestyle of one of South Florida’s most famous families. With six children, the Marinos have traditionally needed a lot of space. But these days, the older children are on their own, and the two youngest are in college. Turns out that even sports legends decide to downsize at some point—and Taylor has

made sure the Marinos’ new scaled-down digs feel just as luxurious (and more intimate) as the larger homes they’ve shared over the years. Though they’ve reduced their square footage, the family wanted to keep an open feeling in their home. Taylor made sure their most cherished possessions—and their love for dramatic color palettes—found their place in the new setting. The original structure was built in the early 1990s, so Taylor gave it a modern makeover: eliminating the outdated popcorn ceilings and most of the interior walls, and creating a distinct entry transition into the living area. The home’s outdoor foyer provides a unique space before guests even reach the front door. Framed with wide-striped draperies from Jeffery Michaels, it doubles as a pleasant place to take in sunsets. From there, a small living area gives way to the kitchen—where Taylor created a unique custom solution of elevated drawers atop a large island counter. “The drawers serve as convenient catchalls,” explains Taylor. “The elevation gives more counter space, as well as hides the disorder from 62

meal preparation.” The Marinos’ ability to reimagine their beloved pieces in new environments set the stage in both the living area and family room, anchored by “Syrian” chairs that pay homage to the Middle East. A green and white area rug from Niba expands patterns into ellipses and curves. From the pass-through in the kitchen, guests can take a seat at the dining room’s British Colonial dining table. An imposing walnut chest from Normandy stands as a proud period piece in a twenty-first-century setting. Overhead, there’s an iconically French white wooden chandelier. covering with patterns that tempt the eye, including a Stark rug in interlocking tracery. The custom oversized bed by Ralph Lauren provides the perfect restful respite, upholstered in plush leather, and covered in pale embroidered linen from Niba. In the newly enlarged master bath, Taylor incorporated a dressing room that leads to an ample closet. With gray marble flooring to match the marble mosaic of the walls, the coral-colored covered bench becomes the star of the dressing space. After completing half a dozen design projects for the Marino family, Taylor says that “with 22 years as friends and collaborators, we think along the same lines.” With Taylor on their team, those lines have led the Marinos home once again. «

A sunburst mirror adds shimmer to the master bedroom’s coral-hued grasscloth walls (opposite page); A Serena & Lily bench, in addition to a scalloped ceiling fixture and wall scones, adds an elegant touch to the master bath.

There are times when you just want to embrace excess. Like renting that lime-green Lamborghini for the day, or splurging on dinner at The Breakers for 20 of your best friends. That same urge applies to chartering the 78-foot Sexy by Lazzara Yachts. Reserve for half a day, a full day, or a whole week, and she’ll take you anywhere at a speedy 27 knots. With her lipstick-red upholstery, silver lamé sofas, and red and black galley, there’s a definite Don Johnson–Miami Vice vibe. What fun for an Austin Powers–themed party or far-out birthday treat. She can carry up to 13 guests for a sunset cruise or sleep up to eight in four staterooms. Based out of Boca Raton, Sexy charters through Moran Yachts from $6,000 a day. (moranyachts.com)

Doesn’t every superyacht come with its own three-person SportSub submersible to take you 130 feet down into the deep, blue yonder? Seems not. But the 145-foot, Cheoy Lee–built Island Heiress does. It’s just one of the amazing watersport toys that come with this elegant globe-trotter. Imagine the fun you’ll have zooming down the yacht’s inflatable waterslide, then hoisting yourself back up via the inflatable climbing wall. To get you to those remote Bahamian dive spots, Island Heiress offers a 34-foot center console tender and 20foot RIB, plus trained dive instructors among the crew of 10 to lead you on underwater adventures. Refitted in 2019, she has space for 12 in six cabins. Based out of Nassau, the yacht charters through Hill Robinson in the Bahamas from $110,000 a week. (hillrobinson.com)

As the saying goes, life’s too short to charter an ugly yacht. And the 140-foot Fabulous Character is sure to make any sailor’s heart soar. Winner of a coveted World Superyacht Award for exterior design, this Holland Jachtbouw–built masterpiece oozes sophistication from every porthole. She’s made for relaxation, with an interior layout that can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms with pampering from a crew of nine. The classic ambience continues inside, inclusive of French

And to ensure total comfort at anchor, this blue-hulled beauty comes with zero-speed stabilizers to reduce the chance of whitecaps forming on your martini. There is also an on-board gym, stand-up paddleboards, water skis, and even an inflatable sailing dinghy. Her favored cruising grounds are the Northern and Central Caribbean, where she charters through Camper & Nicholsons from $150,000 a week. (camperandnicholsons.com)

4 A TOUCH OF

Class

Who can forget the iconic “I’m flying” scene in Titanic when Leo and Kate stood on the bow of the doomed liner? You can pretty much experience the same kind of thrill from the comfy, farfar-forward sunpad of the Touch motor yacht. It’s perhaps the coolest spot on this 120-footer to feel at one with the ocean—especially when she’s at her 12-knot cruising speed. Touch is a true grown-up’s vessel, with seductive staterooms (all beds are king-sized with not a single bunk in sight) and service that’s described as “six star.” The only dilemma will be determining who gets the owner’s stateroom complete with a private deck and spiral staircase, as well as a bathroom bedecked in marble, gold leaf, and Lalique glass. Touch charters through Camper & Nicholsons around the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the Leeward, Windward, and Virgin Islands from $80,000 a week. (camperandnicholsons.com)

074_YACHT_1020-2.indd 77

Only use a professional charter broker. For luxury charters, it’s key to use a broker who’s a member of the International Yacht Brokers Association. They’ll have knowledge and experience of the yachts with the best crews, chefs, and toys, and can steer you to the best destinations. They’ll also be there if anything goes wrong.

2

Know how much it will cost. The weekly charter price is only a fraction of what you’ll pay. Add-on costs include fuel, docking, food and drink, tax, and tips for the crew. These can often add between 30 and 35 percent to the charter.

3

Plan your route. Some charter yachts are faster than others. If you have a wish list of beaches or ports you want to hit, make sure you know—with the help of a broker—whether the yachts on your shortlist have the speed to get there.

4

It’s all about the toys. Most luxury yachts will offer a selection of toys to enjoy; Jet Skis, paddleboards, and fast tenders are the usuals. But some yachts go the extra mile and come with the very latest in water toys, like Flyboards, kite boards, mini-submarines, electric Foilboards, and climbing walls. Just make sure the crew is proficient in teaching how to use them.

5

Don’t watch any episodes of Below Deck. The Bravo reality show chronicling the lives of crew members on a charter superyacht is just that—a reality show. Most of it is just acting.

Have a spare $1.2 million burning a hole in your chinos? Because that’s what it costs— plus expenses, naturally—to charter the 312foot gigayacht Kismet for a truly unforgettable week cruising the Caribbean. Owned by Jacksonville Jaguars principal and Naples resident Shahid Khan (who’s worth $7.8 billion according to Forbes) Kismet was built back in 2014 by the legendary German shipyard Lürssen. There are not enough superlatives in Webster’s to fully describe the hedonistic luxury of this floating palace. With interior design by Laura Sessa, the Kismet’s style is a jaw-dropping mix of Japanese and Art Deco. There are seven cabins for 12 guests, and a crew of 28 to look after your every whim, wish, or want. If you love the experience, ask nicely and you could take her home; yes, Kismet is for sale, though it’s definitely “price upon application.” For those interested in a test drive, charter bookings are handled through Moran Yacht & Ship in Fort Lauderdale. With seats for up to 10 guests and a captain at the helm to keep you in the channel, the VanDutch is an ideal day-tripper. And with a small cabin complete with a fridge, microwave, and sink, this speed demon makes for great alfresco dining. GOURMAND DRINK, EAT, AND REPEAT: THERE ARE PLENTY OF PLACES TO CHOOSE FROM

Brown sugar–crusted salmon atop sweet and spicy potatoes and garlic sauteed spinach

DINING

A Seafood Star is Born—AGAIN By Paul Rubio One of South Florida’s most beloved seafood institutions is making a major comeback thanks to Miami “it” chef and renowned cookbook author, Adrianne Calvo. Say hello to Redfish by Chef Adrianne, the celebrity chef’s reinvention of the historic, beachfront Red Fish Grill, which had shuttered following Hurricane Irma in 2017. Today’s Redfish graces the same palm-laced swathe of its predecessor in Coral Gables’ Matheson Hammock Park—circa 1936 beach pavilion included—and serves a wide range of superb fish and seafood dishes, reflecting Calvo’s global and domestic travels to coastal

087_GOURMAND_1020.indd 87

regions. Choose from over one dozen starters, like beer-battered tiger shrimp with lemon zest aioli, French-tinged mussels Parisienne, or siuna ahi tuna tartare (crispy wonton squares piled with ahi tuna, topped with caper cream and caviar). Then, move on to heartier plates such as the whole crispy snapper, basted in a roasted red bell pepper vinaigrette, or the jalapeño-spiked Maine lobster roll with truffle parmesan fries. Despite having big shoes to fill, Calvo’s Redfish 2.0 proves that sometimes a sequel is even better than the original. (redfishmiami.com) OCTOBER 2020

Dine on ingredient-driven dishes like the blue crab späetzle (pan-fried lump crab and Alsatian dumplings with fresh cherry tomatoes, chili flake, and preserved Meyer lemon) and whole roasted branzino (served with charred lemon and grilled heart of palm) while imbibing premiere Napa Valley wines. ISLAND Elixir

You’ll be happy to work all night on a DRINK OF RUM with these premium expressions

Available at a range of price points, the Bacardi Facundo Rum Collection is a great introduction to the world of premium rums.

T

he cultures of the Caribbean converge in South Florida, and all those island nations produce rum. Premium rum, however, only emerged as a category recently, and mostly as a response to market demand. As consumer appreciation for finer spirits increased, aged rum became an alternative to single malt Scotch, small-batch bourbon, Cognac, and high-quality tequila. Is it sacrilege to mix premium rum into a cocktail? Not really—no more so than VSOP Cognac or artisan tequila, both of which can shine in the right recipe. Here, we showcase rums that are both distinctive and versatile. Bacardi’s Facundo Rum Collection: These four limited-edition releases, drawn from the family’s private reserve, are aged between eight and 23 years. The eight-year-old Neo ($50) is the impossible dream—a white sipping rum, filled with spicy flavors of molasses and citrus. Eximo ($75) spends 10 years in oak barrels and emerges concentrated and layered, with the texture and palate persistence of a fine whiskey. Aged between seven and 23 years and finished in sherry casks, Exquisito ($135) is powerful and intense, with

herbal and pepper accents. After aging between 15 and 23 years, Paraiso ($300) is transferred to cognac barrels before release; like a great cognac, it is ripe, sweet, and mellow. While Exquisito and Paraiso are destined for the snifter, Neo and Eximo can work well with certain cocktails. Rhum Barbancourt: After immigrating to Haiti from Cognac, Dupré Barbancourt established Rhum Barbancourt in 1862. The house is still a family business, with fifth-generation Delphine Gardère running it today. The 15-year-old Estate Reserve ($50) is a rhum agricole (double-distilled from sugar cane, rather than molasses). The floral nose is intensely perfumed with citrus; on the palate, lime and baked pear are balanced by honey, cinnamon, and pepper, followed by a reverberating finish. While complex enough to drink neat, this is also lean and flavorful enough to take the place of Scotch in a Rob Roy. Brugal: The Brugal and Bacardi families traveled from Spain to Cuba on the same ship, and both established distilleries in Santiago de Cuba. The Brugal clan left first, clearing

out prior to the Spanish-American War of 1896 and setting up shop in the Dominican Republic at Puerto Plata. Introduced in 1976, Brugal’s Extra Viejo ($30) is blended from rums aged up to eight years in used bourbon barrels. The rum is powerful and mouth-filling, presenting an assortment of baking spices, fruit, and chocolate flavors that linger on the long finish. Papa’s Pilar: Distilled in Key West from rums sourced throughout the Caribbean and Central America, Papa’s Pilar is an unabashed homage to Hemingway and his beloved fishing boat, Pilar. The dark rum ($40) is aged 24 years in a solera composed of American oak barrels, port wine casks, and oloroso sherry casks. It is bold and dramatic, with hints of baking spices, honey, and caramel. For a premium-edition of a dark rum cocktail, a classic old-fashioned is a good bet. To make, remove the rinds from two thick orange slices and muddle at the bottom of a large rocks glass with a sugar cube, three to four dashes of Angostura bitters, and a splash of water or soda;

add several ounces of rum, and as much ice as you want. When it comes to Based in Key West, the Papa’s Pilar dark rum honors author Ernest Hemingway’s bon vivant spirit. a white rum cocktail, make good use of these premium expressions and go with a mojito. At the bottom of a Collins glass, muddle six mint leaves, two teaspoons sugar, and a splash of club soda. Squeeze in the juice of one lime and add two ounces white rum; stir, add ice cubes, and top off with club soda. «

LAST LOOK

SYMBOLIC STORIES Miami Design District will debut its latest exhibition, The Altered Image by Dina Mitrani Gallery, from October 1 to October 30. The visiting exhibit brings together female artists who use photography — ranging from vintage family album prints to found images—as a starting point to create mixed media pieces. The artists then manually stitch, cut, and paint the images with materials that are as varied as the stories they tell. View works by Tatiana Parcero, Heidi Kirkpatrick, and Priya Kambli, among others. (miamidesigndistrict.net) —Melissa Puppo
