A rare geological feature, coastal dune lakes are only found in five locations throughout the world—Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, Oregon, and here in Walton County. These lakes harbor an interesting mix of wildlife within the combined fresh and salt waters. Of the 15 dune lakes in the 30A area, Western Lake, pictured on the cover, is the second largest. Located along Scenic Highway 30A, Grayton Beach is the only Emerald Coast beach that allows permitted driving to a select few residents each year, chosen from a lottery. YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME

The best way to vacation is to live like the locals do

Living at the beach is a privilege

I don’t take for granted.

I get year-round access to a paradise that people pay to visit for a handful of days each year. I can end my workday and spend those last hours of sunlight from about 5-7 p.m. at the beach swimming and soaking in the sunset views. I can get my chores done on a Saturday morning and still spend my afternoon sun tanning and cooling off in the Gulf waters.

I get the best of both worlds. The comforts of home and the luxuries of vacation remain simultaneously at my fingertips. My favorite coffee shop is on the way to the beach. My go-to lunch spot is the oyster shanty on the water. My favorite shops and markets are located in quaint and charming corners of Emerald Coast communities.

I’m lucky to be a local. My hope for visitors is that, even if just for a few days a year, you can live like a local, too. Created and curated by locals including myself, At the Beach Magazine is an anthology of Emerald Coast adventure.

In this 2026 annual edition, we offer readers a guide to the best the Emerald Coast has to offer. Noteworthy dining options range from casual hangouts to upscale waterfront venues. Aquatic exploration meets unique destinations by boat, paddleboard, or kayak, including top boating spots, natural springs, and an underwater museum. A peppering of state parks, forests, and protected areas welcome hikers, bikers, swimmers, and picnickers alike. And an array of shopping destinations take vacation keepsakes far beyond the average souvenir. With this guide, I hope your itineraries thrive. I hope you find something new and unexpected. I hope you get to enjoy all that the Emerald Coast has to offer. It’s vast, and it’s beautiful. So, if you don’t get to see it all on this trip, I hope you return home to plan next year’s visit to the Emerald Coast. I hope that my home can become your home away from home, too, if it hasn’t already.

See you at the beach,

Local snorkeling and dive spots offer something unique and unconventional

With dozens of artificial reef sites, jetties teeming with sea life, and shallow, family-friendly swim spots from Santa Rosa Beach to Okaloosa Island, the gorgeous Gulf boasts some of the most unique and captivating experiences for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts alike. While swimmers are free to strap on their fins and goggles and explore offshore from the beach, there are a few attractions worth visiting for an unparalleled undersea adventure.

Just a mile offshore from Grayton Beach State Park, the Underwater Museum of Art (UMA) boasts dozens of intricate metallic, stone, concrete, and

mineral sculptures handcrafted by talented artists from both local and international scale.

“It is the nation’s first permanent underwater museum of art, a collaborative program created and managed by the Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA) and South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA),” says CAA Vice President Melissa Wheeler. “It is a project that continues to captivate imaginations and preserve marine life for generations to come.”

The CAA recently held a fundraiser benefitting the UMA’s seventh deployment of new sculptures, which Wheeler says “furthers its mission of merging art, marine conservation and eco-tourism,” noting that since the UMA’s debut, it has been recognized as TIME Magazine’s 100 World’s Greatest Places

WHERE TO GO

The Underwater Museum of Art directs boat anchoring to its Super Reef Anchor Point located at 30 degrees 18.754’ north and 86 degrees 9.521’ west. Enter the coordinates into your GPS as N 30 18.754 W 86 09.521 for location accuracy.

(2018), featured in National Geographic’s Best Trips (2019), and honored as a 2023 CODA award winner.

The attraction contains just a fraction of over 700 artificial reef structures created by SWARA in Walton County. Serving as an elevated sanctuary for marine life where no reef or shelter otherwise existed, the UMA is a free dive site and only requires an admission fee to Grayton Beach State Park to access from land by kayak or paddleboard. Boaters are asked to anchor on or near the Super Reef Anchor Point to protect the sculptures from unintended contact or damage.

SS UNITED STATES

This spring, the SS United States, a 1,000-footlong ocean liner established in 1951, began a slow journey from Philadelphia to the Destin area where it will be submerged to become the world’s largest artificial reef.

Commonly referred to as “America’s Flagship,” the vessel is steeped in storied accomplishments, as it still maintains the record for the fastest transatlantic voyage and has carried passengers such as Walt Disney, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe, and four former United States presidents.

Originally considered to be stripped for sellable scrap metal, Destin-Fort Walton Beach Coastal Resources collaborated with the SS United States Conservancy to make it the biggest addition to the hundreds of artificial reefs that dot the Emerald Coast.

When fully submerged, the SS United States is estimated to sit at around 180 feet deep, with its top levels a mere 50 feet deep, making it an international attraction for both fledgling and experienced divers who want to witness a piece of history that now serves to preserve and foster healthy marine life habitats.

MORE TO COME

The SS United States Conservancy is actively exploring additional exhibition and partnership opportunities in the DestinFort Walton Beach area. Plans are under discussion for a permanent museum and immersive visitor experience in Okaloosa County near the ship’s deployment location.

DESTIN JETTIES

Located just beyond HarborWalk Village is the Destin East Pass and Jetties, another man-made structure designed to protect myriad marine life and coastline by functioning as a dam to harmful, tide-driven erosion.

One of the area’s most popular snorkeling sites, jetty waters reach a depth of 30 to 60 feet deep, making it accessible both by boat and land. It’s not uncommon to spot sea turtles, crabs, octopi, seasonal species of fish and even the errant, curious dolphin pod.

Currents at and around the East Pass and Jetties can be strong. Swimmers are advised to check the tides and beach conditions before exploration for safety and visibility concerns. Snorkeling and diving during rising tide will offer an influx of additional marine life to view.

While many local snorkeling tour companies will ferry you there by boat, public access is available on Gulfshore Drive at the O’Steen public beach access point.

SNUBA TOURS

Snorkelers who wish to dive deeper but may not be ready to take the plunge into obtaining a diving certificate can now participate in Destin Snorkel’s new SNUBA tours.

The SNUBA (Surface

Nexus

Underwater Breathing Apparatus) is a contraption which marries the act of scuba and snorkeling by allowing swimmers to dive up to depths of 20 feet. While breathing through an elongated air hose tethered to a raft-anchored oxygen tank, participants can breathe anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes underwater, allowing for extensive exploration of some of Destin’s premier diving spots on a professionally guided subaquatic tour.

Guided adventures guarantee two to three hours of an immersive experience as you roam as one with the diverse marine life who call these waters home.

SNUBA does not require a license and is a family-friendly beginner experience geared toward ages 8 and up.

Take your exploration deeper with Destin Snorkel’s new SNUBA experience.

CRAB ISLAND

PONTOON

ALocated on the north side of the Marler Bridge, Crab Island connects the Choctawhatchee Bay to Destin’s East Pass. The widespread, shallow sandbar was once a small, manmade island created in the ’60s as part of the Destin Pass project. The area has since been a top boating destination for Okaloosa County visitors and locals.

The shallow 3-foot depth creates a pool-party atmosphere where visitors mingle with friends old and new, enjoy water games, and relax on floaties, making Crab Island the ideal pull-up and hangout spot for boaters.

Vendor boats roam around selling food, beverages, and souvenirs. Wild Coconuts offers Your guide to boating

long the Emerald Coast, there’s no shortage of saltwater destinations. And with an average of 250 sunny days per year, Northwest Florida weather is ideal for exploring by boat. a unique and refreshing beverage break with whole coconuts, pineapples, and watermelon from its whimsically painted motorboat. A sister boat, Wild Boiled Peanuts, brings the downhome flavor. Reef Burger has a full menu that will satisfy your midday cravings. And Gulfstream Ice Cream keeps the classic boat day snack cold, so you don’t have to.

For the ultimate Crab Island convenience, Destin Water Waiters will deliver special orders straight to your boat. Choose from a full menu of selections from nearby Destin restaurants, including chicken wings, sandwiches, tacos, and burgers.

While it’s possible to kayak or paddleboard to Crab Island, boating is the ideal mode of transportation and gives visitors a home base to stash food, beverages, and belongings for a full day of fun.

DESTIN EAST JETTY

Adjacent to the Marler Bridge and opposite Crab Island, a stretch of beach lines the Destin Pass from Norriego Point at the Destin Harbor entrance down to Osteen Beach. At the end of the beach, the Destin East Jetty juts out, harboring interesting marine life along the rocky shoreline. Swimmers should be advised of strong currents and check conditions beforehand.

While Norriego Point and Osteen Beach offer pedestrian access, the area is less crowded than other public beach accesses throughout Destin. Along Norriego Point, the sand gives way to four half-moon pools inset by a small stretch of rock at each opening. This area is great for shallow-water swimming and snorkeling.

At the south end past Osteen Beach, the stretch of jetty offers an optimal snorkeling environment with deeper waters toward the end of the rockline. Anglers enjoy casting out from the end of the jetty, so be aware of your surroundings while swimming. Wearing a life jacket can help with endurance for

less experienced swimmers and allows for a cool, casual view of ocean life as you float atop the saltwater. Snorkelers can expect to see blue crabs, hermit crabs, toadfish, flounder, sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, and mullet. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a sea turtle. Keep your eyes peeled for unique seashells and whole sand dollars along the shoreline. Boaters can zip over to the nearby HarborWalk Village, just minutes away, to enjoy a respite from the sun. Dock in for a lunch break at Harry T’s Lighthouse, or make a pit stop for frozen drinks and treats at Jester Mardi Gras Daiquiris

SHELL ISLAND

Just east of Panama City Beach, a 7-mile stretch of undeveloped land provides its visitors with a unique Emerald Coast experience. Though the destination is a peninsula and not a true island, Shell Island is only accessible by boat. Its shores face St. Andrews Bay to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.

Throughout the day, a ferry delivers visitors to the island’s west end, where the main beach and jetty are located. The rocky stretch of jetty offers optimal snorkeling, and the sandy shores provide prime shelling. Snorkelers can expect to encounter stingrays, angelfish, redfish, sheepshead, octopus, and several species of coral and

sponges. Sea turtles can sometimes be spotted in the area, too.

Boaters can access more remote stretches of the island toward the middle and east end. St. Andrews State Park manages the west end, while the east end falls under Tyndall Air Force Base territory. A section of sand at the center of the island falls outside of state and military jurisdiction. Boaters are welcome to anchor down and explore most areas but should mind signage and heed warnings. A protected national wildlife refuge, Shell Island is teeming with Northwest Florida flora and fauna on land and in the water. Osprey and herons soar through the skies. Armadillos and marsh rabbits roam the coastal terrain. The area’s beloved bottlenose dolphins regularly and unabashedly traverse near the shore and among human visitors.

If planning for a full day islandside, boaters should note that the undeveloped island is just that—undeveloped. There are no restrooms, restaurants, or shaded pavilions. So, pack everything you’ll need: food, beverages, sunscreen, hat, umbrella, etc. To restock on necessities, boaters can drive about 15 minutes across the bay to the mainland Pier Store at St. Andrews State Park. And keep your eyes peeled for the 850 Shoreline Ice Cream boat that frequents Shell Island’s coast.

Be your own captain and rent a boat, or book a charter for the ultimate care-free excursion.

Reel in all the benefi ts of a fresh catch without the hassle of the hook

The Emerald Coast naturally offers a healthy variety of fresh fish and seafood. But we can’t all be anglers. Some of us need the help and convenience of a professional. Local seafood markets are like the fairy godmother of all things good from the Gulf. With one trip, you can find everything from deveined shrimp and cooked-to-order crab legs to grouper and wahoo fillets.

NAVARRE SEAFOOD MARKET, NAVARRE

An unassuming shack from the outside, Navarre Seafood Market offers a wide variety of fish and seafood, including clams, oysters, whole crabs, crab legs, and various localcatch species that they buy from commercially licensed fisherman from the area. Naturally, the selection changes with whatever is available and in season, giving this deceptively simple little place a level of authenticity that comes from personally knowing the fisherman who bring in the fish. Located at 8104 Navarre Parkway, Navarre. For more information, visit navarreseafoodmarket.com.

GULF COAST SEAFOOD, FORT WALTON BEACH

Known for crawfish and shrimp, Gulf Coast Seafood offers a great selection of local seafood and fish at fair prices. Among their offerings are mullet, snapper, oysters, crabs, and other tasty gems that teem in the waters off the shores of Destin and Fort Walton Beach, brought in fresh for the staff to clean

and prep for customers. The market also offers ready-to-eat meals and event catering, bringing locally sourced seafood prepped to perfection and ready to enjoy. Located at 51 Miracle Strip Parkway SE, Fort Walton Beach. For more information, visit gulfcoastseafoodfortwaltonbeach.website.

SEXTON’S SEAFOOD MARKET, DESTIN

Locally owned and operated for more than 40 years, Sexton’s signature blue and white building is a landmark for fish and seafood lovers in Destin. They pride themselves on competitive pricing and high-quality, delicious product, from various types of shrimp and every imaginable species of Emerald Coast’s finest fish, all displayed in a clean, whitetiled market-like space that offers an open view of their operations. Fresh, local catches are brought in daily and sold both retail and wholesale to local restaurants. Located at 601 Harbor Blvd., Destin. For more information, visit sextonsseafoodmarket.com.

BUDDY’S SEAFOOD MARKET, SEAGROVE, PANAMA CITY BEACH

With two locations in Seagrove and Panama City Beach, Buddy’s Seafood specializes in wild caught Florida shrimp that they offer steamed and seasoned to order as well as locally caught fish including grouper, snapper, mahi, and others depending on seasonality and availability. They also offer a takeout steam bar and a selection of prepared items made in-house including key lime pie, cocktail sauce, tuna and crab dip, and gumbo. Located at 5231 E. Co. Highway 30A, Seagrove, and 111 S. Arnold Road, Panama City Beach. For more information, visit buddysseafoodmarket.com.

DEWEY DESTIN’S HARBORSIDE RESTAURANT

AJ’S SEAFOOD & OYSTER BAR, DESTIN

Primely located right on the Destin Harbor, AJ’s is known for its water views and a laid-back, friendly atmosphere along with regular live entertainment. The dockside restaurant welcomes guests to bring in their fresh catch to be cooked to order and paired with your choice of sides. The killer view and cocktail selection don’t hurt either. Located at 116 Harbor Blvd., Destin. For more info, visit ajsdestin.com.

BROTULA’S SEAFOOD HOUSE & STEAMER, DESTIN

Known for its fresh, locally sourced seafood, Brotula’s waterfront restaurant overlooks the Destin Harbor and offers guests the option of bringing in their own catch after a fishing trip or when they stop in to dine. Leave your filleted fish and your name with the hostess, and the staff will keep it on ice until you order. The chefs in the kitchen will fry, grill, or blacken the fish and serve it on a platter alongside a generous helping of coleslaw, French fries, and hush puppies. Located at 210 D Harbor Blvd., Destin. For more information, visit brotulas.com.

’EM

Hook Cook YOU THEY ’EM,

As much fun as a day out fishing on the Gulf can be, the idea of cooking your catch after hours on the water may not be your favorite or even in your skillset. Luckily, a few Emerald Coast restaurants offer “cook your catch” options that will make all that time you spent with a line in the water worth the wait.

Long revered for knowing their way around seafood, Dewey Destin's restaurants offer a cook your catch option at their location on the Destin Harbor. Bring your fresh cleaned and filleted fish, and they will prepare it fried, grilled, or blackened, served familystyle with coleslaw and two sides of your choice. Sit inside or on the deck where you can enjoy the results of your hard day’s work and relax as the sun sets over the water. Located at 202 Harbor Blvd., Destin. For more information, visit destinseafood.com.

THE DECKHAND SOCIAL, PANAMA CITY BEACH

There are, of course, a couple of things to know: Most restaurants have a perperson weight limit and require the fish to be cleaned, filleted, and bagged. Also, be sure to call first to make sure they can accommodate your request, as peak season may limit availability.

With a waterfront location adjacent to the Pirate’s Cove Marina and its own pool, the Deckhand Social offers a relaxing place to spend an afternoon or unwind after a day on the boat—and you can bring your own fish. Hook and cook options include two sides and various methods of preparation, from frying to grilling and blackening. While you wait for your meal, enjoy a pirate or mermaid show, running every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Located at 3901 Thomas Dr., Panama City Beach. For more information, visit thedeckhandsocial.com.

SPOTLIGHTAlys Beach

Bermudan-style architecture and small-town charm make this a must-visit stop on your tour of 30A

UNTOUCHED SANCTUARY

Alys Beach’s story begins in the 50s with a closeknit family enjoying the quiet, pristine beaches and untouched wilderness surrounding Scenic Highway 30A.

For generations, the area was a sanctuary where the Stephens family ate watermelon together on the Fourth of July; jumped the waves in the Gulf, seeing who could go the highest; shared marshmallows over a roaring campfire with no sounds disturbing nature except laughter; and fell asleep under the dark skies, bodies wrung out from the days packed with fun.

On a hot September day in the late 1970s, Jim Stephens, his wife Julie, and his father Elton B. sealed Alys Beach’s legacy by winning the auction for 158 acres on that secluded part of Florida’s Gulf Coast they had enjoyed for decades. The untouched Eden of scrub oak, quartz-laden sand, and gin-clear water didn’t have other towns yet, but the Stephens knew the area was special.

A TOWN TAKES SHAPE

As communities sprang up around it, what would become Alys Beach remained undeveloped. In 2004, the Miami-based planning and architecture firm DPZ CoDesign (DPZ), which crafted the plans for neighboring Seaside and Rosemary Beach, came on board to create the vision of Alys Beach.

Considering the threat of storms and hurricanes in the area, American architect Andrés Duany, a founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism, chose the resilient island of Bermuda as Alys Beach’s architectural model. Jason Comer, Elton B.’s grandson and Jim’s nephew, put on the mantle of town founder to shepherd his family’s legacy. Creative architects Marieanne Khoury-Vogt and Erik Vogt, of Khoury Vogt Architects (KVA), refined plans and details to create a vision of New Urbanism as of yet unseen.

tiles, heralded the coming town. Then came other unique architectural identifiers: The whitewashed stucco and stepped roofs harkening to Bermudan architecture. Private courtyards rather than balconies as places to gather, nodding to Antigua.

Soon, a burgeoning Town Center took shape. KVA expanded the architectural narrative with Grecian trellises, Moorish arches, and Dutch gables, reinforcing individuality in the homes while still maintaining a cohesive canvas.

“Alys Beach isn’t just jaw-dropping architecture. It’s special because of all the thought and planning that goes into every exquisite detail,” says Mike Ragsdale, founder of The 30A Company and resident since 2005.

hidden splendors within. Quiet parks and secret coves demand you sit and soak it all in. Nothing happens in Alys Beach by accident.”

Ragsdale’s iconic blue and yellow 30A stickers adorn bumpers on cars parked all around Alys Beach where height restrictions keep the buildings to 50 feet tall so all can enjoy the natural skyline

BUSTLING COMMUNITY

Beyond impeccable views: Five state parks and forests surround the town. Zuma Wellness Center attends to physical and mental health. Caliza provides a refreshing pool respite for people to gather. And families often enjoy the short bicycle ride to Charlie’s Delights for an ice cream cone after a day on the alabaster sand.

Digital Graffiti, the town’s signature annual event, brings digitally curated projection artwork from artists around the world, transforming the whitewashed stucco walls of the town into a whimsical playground of color and animation.

While parking in 30A communities can often be a pain point, Alys Beach has plenty of free parking and convenient access roads that keep traffic typical to the scenic byway at bay—even during large events like Digital Graffiti.

The town center, anchored by a lush amphitheater that hosts musical and theatrical performances throughout the year, features thoughtfully chosen merchants. Fonville Press has the sundries, including pancake kits with all the fixings. NEAT Bottle Shop stocks a collection of artisan spirits, wines, and craft beers. Boutiques like Alys Shoppe burst with finely crafted furnishings, decor, and clothing fit for this slice of paradise.

You can slurp oysters and craft cocktails at The Citizen or eat your weight in inventive sushi and ube soft serve drizzled with white chocolate magic shell at O-Ku George’s, a culinary staple of 30A since 2008, has the best fish tacos anywhere, and their sesame and crab salad will keep you returning daily. Raw & Juicy started as an airstream in Seaside over two decades ago but found a brick-and-mortar home to serve their smoothies, cold-pressed juices, and health-conscious raw menu in Alys Beach.

MAINTAINING CHARM

But perhaps Alys Beach’s greatest charm is its thoughtful mix of private and public spaces. According to Robbie Roberts, Alys Beach Real Estate sales associate and resident since 2007, just 20 percent of homeowners utilize the in-house vacation rental program, keeping the transient challenges other 30A communities experience at bay.

“Here, owners meet owners, they develop friendships, their children develop friendships, and that connectiveness, coupled with our owner events, creates that community they don’t get elsewhere,” says Roberts. “When they're back in their lives and working, they’re doing their thing. Here they get to breathe, settle in, and develop deep relationships.”

Alys Beach exudes small-town charm, even when 30A brims with visitors. You can park your car and not get in it again until you leave. You can meander down pedestrian paths dotted with sculptures on your way to the beach and relax on an uncrowded stretch of sand with a single row of chairs.

“People come here time and again,” Roberts notes. “They could go anywhere, but they choose to be here, and they choose to be here often.”

Emerald AN GEM

Immersed in nature and amenities, Henderson Beach Resort is a luxury retreat with Southern charm

PHOTOS
HENDERSON BEACH RESORT

In the heart of Destin lies a protected stretch of beach and scrub forest untouched by the surrounding condominium corridor, nearby shopping plazas, and highway traffic—Henderson Beach State Park.

It’s the last remaining coastal scrub area in Destin. And Henderson Beach Resort & Spa is perfectly poised as the unassuming luxury resort just next door.

Both the park and the resort are something of a hidden gem along the Emerald Coast. The resort opened in 2016, but its luxury design wasn’t inspired by anything new. Henderson Beach Resort is based in Old Florida Southern charm both in aesthetics and hospitality, welcoming guests as if welcoming home family or friends for a visit.

The resort’s area marketing manager Aleis Tusa notes that the blend of refined elegance with timeless coastal charm is what sets this resort apart from the rest. Where modern resorts lean on minimalism to create luxurious atmospheres, the Henderson focuses on historic elements, character, and comfort to create Old Florida opulence.

“Generous spaces, layered textures, and thoughtful details create an atmosphere of understated sophistication, where modern comforts coexist with the relaxed spirit of the Gulf Coast,” says Tusa. “It’s a style that doesn’t chase trends—it honors place, history, and the luxury of slowing down.”

Old Florida influences are reflected in the grand, coastal manor-style architecture, warm and inviting interiors, and a relaxed sophistication, encouraging guests to savor their vacation experience. Throughout the resort, guests can enjoy work by local artists, including Melissa Mercer Brown, Justin Gaffrey, and others, as well as vintage photography depicting a bygone era of the Emerald Coast by historical local photographer Arturo Mennillo.

“The blend of Southern charm, thoughtful design, and generous spaces creates an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly elevated,” Tusa says.

A default space for most hotels, the Henderson’s lobby, aka the living room, is one designed with the intention of passing time—you won’t find a chair here that you don’t want to sink into. But the cherry on top is where the space opens to a sweeping veranda offering expansive views of the scrub forest and white-sand beaches.

Surrounded by Northwest Florida native habitats and ecosystems, you can sense nature in the smell of salt air from the nearby beach, the sight of shorebirds flapping in flocks through blue skies, and the sound and feel of a Gulf breeze as it passes through swaying canopies.

“The state park provides our guests with stunning, unobstructed views,” Tusa says. “Instead of being surrounded by high-rise developments, they enjoy the rare beauty of an unspoiled coastal habitat.”

The view only gets better when you venture to the resort’s rooftop sushi and cocktail bar where the height grants you perspective over the canopy of sand pines and oaks out to the beach’s white sand and emerald waters.

In-room balcony views offer a private slice of paradise to take in the sights over a morning cappuccino. But with French door shutters opening from the bathtub out to the bedroom and balcony, your beach views are hardly limited to the outdoors.

“The state park provides our guests with stunning, unobstructed views. Instead of being surrounded by high-rise developments, they enjoy the rare beauty of an unspoiled coastal habitat.”

A night spent at the Henderson is like being wrapped in Southern comfort. After a soak in the sunken tub, slip into a complementary Henderson robe and saunter to the room’s ultimate comfort—the bed.

Beyond sushi with a view and room service, an array of classy, coastal offerings is available onsite at the resort.

“Whether guests are looking for a romantic dinner, a casual bite, a sunset toast, or a familyfriendly indulgence, our diverse venues allow them to explore new flavors and enjoy memorable moments throughout their stay—all without ever leaving the resort,” says Tusa.

Horizons offers a casual, Floridian-fare experience with views overlooking the pool, beach, and state park. Sprinkles is your go-to spot for coffee (yes, they serve Starbucks!), quick bites,

and sweet treats. And the Henderson’s signature restaurant, Primrose, recently relaunched as a new coastal Italian concept.

“This new direction allows us to celebrate the simplicity and elegance of coastal Italian cuisine— fresh seafood, handmade pastas, and seasonal produce—while offering guests a distinctive culinary experience they won’t find elsewhere in the area,” Tusa says. “It elevates our overall food and beverage program, adds depth to our dining portfolio, and gives both new and returning guests an exciting reason to dine at the resort.”

When it comes to recreation, amenities abound.

There are two swimming pools: One is for adults only, and one is family-friendly with a lazy river attached. Both pools are serviced by walking attendants from the poolside lunch spot, Sea Level.

The little ones can find endless entertainment at Poppy’s Kids Club and movie nights. Adults can get energized with a group yoga or spin class on the grand lawn or with a solo workout at the 24-hour fitness center. But to feel fully refreshed and rejuvenated, a relaxing day might be the answer to your vacation prayers—just be sure to book in advance to ensure preferred treatments and services.

A short walk across Scenic 98 and you’re welcomed by the pristine Gulf-side beach. There, you can enjoy a day of saltwater fun at the resort’s private beach equipped with complimentary towels, kayaks, and paddleboards, plus chair and umbrella setups available for rent.

Check out a complementary bicycle, and head next door for some outdoor adventure. Henderson Beach Resort guests enjoy free

Henderson Beach Resort is ideal for romantic getways and family vacations alike. An adults-only pool creates a carefree lounging experience while the family-friendly lazy river offers chill fun for everyone.

entry to access Henderson Beach State Park’s pet-friendly nature trail, more than a mile of Gulf-side beach with 30-foot sand dunes, playgrounds, spacious pavilions, and more. And fun, educational programs led by park rangers are available for kids every Friday.

You could spend your entire vacation within the resort and the state park without a care in the world. But should you wish to explore all that Destin has to offer, the Henderson is here to help.

“Our full-time concierge is available to share information on dining, activities, shopping, or events in the greater Destin area,” explains Tusa.

The world’s luckiest fishing village awaits. Make plans for a boat-day adventure out to Crab Island, or spend the day at Big Kahuna’s Water & Adventure Park. Notable districts like HarborWalk Village and the Destin Commons offer an array of shopping and dining, a movie theater, bowling, zip-lining, and more.

From quartz sand and crystal-clear waters to the scrub forest and sand pines to beach town exploration, the natural beauty of the Emerald Coast beckons.

ART HERE Local

A big-box buyout left the Artists at Gulf Place displaced; Shacks Art in Grayton Beach keeps the legacy alive

STORY BY PAIGE AIGRET PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEN DEEB

Best friends Autumn Johnson and Kasey Caldwell co-worked for years selling their respective artwork out of co-op shops. But they never anticipated graduating their work relationship to co-owners.

“We’re like soulmates,” Johnson says. “We know each other very well, so that helps.”

The duo first met in Nashville, while working at an artist co-op and later followed each other to the Emerald Coast. For four years, Caldwell and Johnson sold their work out of the Artists at Gulf Place shacks at the Gulf Place Towne Center in Santa Rosa Beach.

Originally founded by artist Dwight Ward, Artists at Gulf Place was known in the community as a happening art hub.

“People would come and say, ‘How do I get in here?’” Johnson says, “because it was an honor to be one of the artists. There were only eight shacks.”

Locals, tourists, and part-time residents returned regularly to shop one-of-a-kind art, unique souvenirs, and eclectic jewelry. And recurring workshops, live music, and events drew large crowds.

But in the early months of 2024, uncertainty swept Gulf Place, from the artist district to the surrounding eateries and local shops located at the town center.

A new buyer had come in—the corporation behind the big-box tourist shop Alvin’s Island.

While previous buyers had adopted existing leases, Alvin’s Island had other plans. Under the new ownership, Gulf Place businesses were displaced as leases expired.

“Yolo Board + Bike, the 30A Local, Soho, the coffee shop, everyone—we just watched it happen,” Johnson recalls.

Around the time of the buyout, founder Ward suffered a stroke

Kasey Caldwell’s (bottom) strengths lie in behind-the-scenes marketing and logistics while Autumn Johnson (top) specializes in display curation and events. Both contribute artwork to the shop’s inventory with coastal resin designs by Caldwell and wood workings by Johnson.

and was unable to fight for his lease and his artists. Ward’s family tried to no avail.

“We thought maybe they’ll keep us because we’re not in the building that they want to put their store in,” Johnson says. “The whole time, they wouldn’t talk to us or answer the question, ‘Are you going to renew us?’”

Pretty soon, the Artists at Gulf Place was all that was left.

Johnson and Caldwell formed a plan— new business, same concept—and the two began searching for a new storefront that the soon-to-be-displaced artists could call home.

“It was kind of up to us, if anyone wanted to pursue, to continue what we had built,” Johnson says.

An open retail space came up at the Mystic Porte shopping plaza in Grayton Beach, and they jumped on it. Johnson and Caldwell chose the name “Shacks” as an homage to Ward’s artist shacks at Gulf Place. The new storefront at Mystic Porte opened in March 2024.

“We’ve mirrored that business profile over here as far as local artists, co-op, the workshops, the events, and the Wine Walk,” Johnson says.

While starting up their new business, Artists at Gulf Place was still riding out its lease. Johnson and Caldwell juggled both, utilizing the opportunity to share the news with as many customers as they could reach.

“We’re still trying to let them all know where we

are,” Johnson says. “It is heartwarming when they find us over here.”

In September 2024, Artists at Gulf Place hosted a final Wine Walk, their signature monthly event. Artists, friends, family, locals, and returning visitors gathered to celebrate the end of an era.

“We did the Wine Walk over there for probably 20 years,” Johnson says. “That was always so much fun; it was a hit. So of course we brought it here.”

The Wine Walk didn’t miss a beat. Shacks hosted its first Wine Walk in October 2024 and continues to host the event on the third Thursday of every month.

Beyond keeping Ward’s vision alive, Shacks’ large retail space has allowed Johnson and Caldwell to expand the concept, opening the door to more than 60 local artists.

“We’ve been in the business all our lives just about,” Johnson says. “I’ve had stores in Nashville, and she’s been doing art shows forever, so we had a knack for what would work and what people are buying. Plus, Gulf Place taught us so much.”

In March 2025, Shacks hosted its first annual arts festival, celebrating a successful first year.

“The main thing going forward is just growing the business of people coming through our door and letting everyone that adored Gulf Place know that we’re here and that the workshops are here,” Johnson says.

“It’s local art—it’s what you’re looking for.”

PRESERVE STATE PARK

Named for expansive rising dunes that resemble ship sails over Gulf waters, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park offers beaching, hiking, biking, and birding. Bike rentals are available at the park store, and the area is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.

Being in the Sunshine State equates to plenty of time spent in the great outdoors. While the Emerald Coast is synonymous with its brilliant green waves, it is also home to a unique ecosystem of oak-shaded paths, sandy hills, and scenic overlooks of coastal dunes, bays, and a variety of waterways.

From Fort Walton Beach to Panama City there’s an abundance of beachside strolls, park trails, and river routes to explore. Lace up your sneakers or grab your paddle to follow in the footsteps and strokes of many Emerald Coast residents and visitors.

Deemed one of the best Florida state parks for camping, Topsail Hill Preserve State Park in Santa Rosa Beach is a paradise for hikers, bikers, paddlers, geocachers, and fishermen. Whether you choose to stay overnight or visit for the day, there’s much to explore from rare coastal dune lakes to sun-dappled pine forests, which are home to 13 atrisk species. The 3-mile loop, Topsail Hill Morris Lake Trail is the most popular trail for its ease accompanied by beautiful views of the beach. Head to Campbell Lake, a 100-acre coastal dune lake, to canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. Coastal dune lakes are unique geographical features, with only a few present around the world.

Nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and St. Andrews Bay is St. Andrews State Park in Panama City. For walkers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts there are two half-mile trails at Heron Pond and Gator Lake. Follow Heron Pond Trail through a flatwood pine forest to Sandy Point. Gator Lake Trail provides a lakeside overlook where alligators and waterfowl can be viewed. Cycling is particularly popular at this park with a 2-mile paved road cutting through the park providing glimpses of

TOPSAIL HILL

white-tailed deer as you speed past. Paddle, kayak, or canoe around Grand Lagoon or take a boat across the channel to the popular Shell Island. This park offers camping and lodging, and Panama City Beach and town proper are nearby.

Henderson Beach State Park in Destin is known for its 30-foot dunes dotting the park’s shoreline. While walking on the dunes is prohibited, there’s plenty of beach to roam and a .75-mile nature trail that winds through a coastal

DEER LAKE STATE PARK

scrub forest of shady oaks and provides overlooks throughout. As a bonus, dogs are welcome on this trail. Additionally, there’s a 1-mile paved park road designated for bikes.

Point Washington State Forest in Santa Rosa Beach is incredibly unique, featuring 10 different natural communities in one park including sandhills, basin swamps, wet flatwoods, wet prairie, and cypress swamps. Trek and traverse through 27 miles of tranquil paths that vary from easy to moderate. All paths are walkable while also being open to off-road cyclists and horseback riders. The Eastern Lake Trail System is popular because it consists of three double-track loop trails. The hiker or biker can select the 3.5-, 5- or 10-mile loop. On the trails, you’re likely to spot osprey and bald eagles soaring overhead.

Yearly, Grayton Beach State Park in Grayton Beach is recognized and awarded for its beautiful beaches and access to Western Lake, a 100-acre coastal dune lake. Western Lake is a bucket list location for many paddleboard and kayak

enthusiasts. If you prefer land over water, you can still view breathtaking views of Western Lake by foot or bike on the 9-mile roundtrip trail that guides you through the coastal forest. Another state park known for its coastal dune lake is Deer Lake State Park in Santa Rosa Beach. A bit more secluded yet equally as beautiful, this park features two nature trails, Orange Trail which is a 1-mile loop through longleaf pines and Blue Trail, a half-mile boardwalk path over sand and coastal scrubs and ending at a scenic overlook. A paved bike path circles the lake for a pleasant mile.

The region’s newest addition is the pedestrian path on Okaloosa Island. This 4.4-mile, 12-footwide, bridge-to-bridge path safely connects bikers and pedestrians from the Brooks Bridge to East Pass Park at the foot of the Destin Marler Bridge. The path came about as a means to provide safe transport for walkers and bikers along one of Okaloosa County’s most heavily trafficked roads, Highway 98. For those who wish to use the path in the evening, blue bioluminescent stones light the way.

The natural spring is the centerpiece of a playground adventure park, offering myriad activities and amenities. Visitors enter the spring from the surrounding grassy area and stairs. Adventurers can take shortcuts to

the 68-degree water via the park’s waterslide, diving boards, high dive platform or zip line. Scuba divers can explore the spring’s 50-foot-deep basin and 115-footdeep cavern. A dive shop is located on-site, and daily dive passes are available for $25. Tubes, paddleboards, and dive gear are available for rent. Camping and lodging accommodations are available at the park. The 161-acre Morrison Springs County Park is located five miles south of Ponce De Leon Springs State Park. Morrison Springs is one of the area’s most popular spots for scuba diving. The 250-foot-diameter spring has three cavities which produce its cold waters. The deepest of the three reaches 300 feet in depth before ending at an “underground chamber of unknown dimensions,” according to a Walton County website. The web page also offers weekly updates on spring clarity levels. A boardwalk leads to a small, sandy beach and a diving dock. Dive stations are available at the start of the boardwalk and at the dock. Picnic and pavilion seating is available. Admission to the park is free.

PITT AND SYLVAN SPRINGS

The Pitt and Sylvan Springs recreation areas are located in Youngstown off State 20, about 25 miles north of Panama City. The Pitt, Sylvan, and Williford springs are connected by boardwalks throughout the park, and their spring waters feed Econfina Creek, which kayakers can travel to reach swimming areas. Fresh, clear, cold water bubbles up from several places in the Pitt and Sylvan springs, while Williford’s water originates from under a limestone ledge, which is visible about 12 feet below the surface. Each swimming area is accessible by stairs into the water and offers nearby pavilions and grills. Admission to the recreation areas is free.

JACKSON BLUE SPRINGS

Located five miles east of Marianna, Jackson Blue Springs Recreation Area is home to the 202-acre Merritts Mill Pond. The pond is popular for swimming, picnicking, scuba training and exploration, fishing, and boating. Tubes, canoes, paddleboats, basketballs, and volleyballs can be rented at the recreation area. Coldwater Outfitters offers guided tours and kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals. Scuba adventures are available through Cave Adventurers Inc. Admission to the park is $4 per person or $30 for an annual pass.
