Our new pop-up gallery highlights local artists through the excellent Reimagine, a “greatest hits” exhibition comprising the Council’s past and future shows with exciting reproductions. A MOVING EXHIBIT The term “kinetic art” refers to pieces that appear to be in motion and the forces and energy responsible for the movement. POWERFUL PLAY Originally written in 1985 by American playwright August Wilson, Fences delves into the intricacies of the life of a man named Troy Maxson, following his personal experiences with the color barrier as a youth and the havoc his frustrations wreak on his relationships. Part six of a 10-part series known as The Pittsburg Cycle, this story provides an analysis of race and the role it plays in Troy’s behavior and mentality. The Pulitzer Prize–winning play won multiple Tony Awards when it was revived on Broadway in 2010 (starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis) and was adapted into a film directed by Washington in 2016. As a stick sculpture artist, Patrick Dougherty spins fairy tales from twisted willow saplings. Evoking wind-blown Hobbit homes, haunted castles, and birds’ nests, his oversized works are created as “lairs for feral children or wayward grown-ups” to be touched and explored, the artist says.

To celebrate its fortieth anniversary, Mounts Botanical Garden in West Palm Beach commissioned Dougherty’s latest masterpiece.

Inspired in part by what he calls the area’s “varied and crazy-looking” tropical plants, the 20-foot-high sprawling maze, which opens to the public on January 28, leans as if in a storm.

Dougherty has been inspired by sticks since childhood, when he and his four siblings would create forts, swords, and wizards’ wands out

of the found materials near their home in the North Carolina woods. “Kids need very little,” says the artist. “They fill in with their imagination. A couple of sticks can go a long way.”

Imagine how far 10 tons can go.

Although Dougherty’s sculpture at Mounts seemingly sprouts on its own, 135 local volunteers can attest otherwise. For three weeks, they clipped, curved, and wove tapered sticks alongside Dougherty and his son Sam, 24. No wires, nails, or power tools were used, just pruners, saws, and willing hands.

Dougherty is a charming and chipper Outward Bound–style leader, a necessity given his reliance on free labor of all ages, temperaments, languages, and nationalities. Over the past 36 years, volunteers have helped him create 300 installations around the globe, from Texas and Wisconsin to Denmark and South Korea.

“My art has provided a magic carpet to some great places: Australia, Korea, Japan, and all over Europe and in almost every U.S. state,” he says. “It’s been my ticket to meeting all kinds of people and having an amazing life.”

No matter the vision, locale, or weather, Dougherty sticks to a strict timeline to create each installation: three weeks. “Projects need

boundaries,” he says. “You don’t want to wear out your workers.” He welcomes comments and questions from everyone as he works. “There are no doors to close,” he says. “I get to know a community even more than most visitors, and it informs my creations.... Being able to adapt and collaborate is the joy of what I do.”

At 73, Dougherty completes approximately 10 projects yearly and is fully booked through 2020. Botanical gardens, museums, and universities are his mainstays, but he also branches out. In 2006, he swathed a Max Azria boutique in Los Angeles in tumbleweeds. “I’m a sculptor for hire and willing to work,” he says.

“If you want to survive as a professional artist, you must maintain momentum.”

His formal schooling doesn’t suggest a life of dream-weaving. Dougherty earned a Bachelor

of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina in 1967 and a Master of Arts in hospital and health administration from the University of Iowa two years later. But after an early career as a hospital administrator, he longed to work with his hands where he most loved: the outdoors. So at age 28, he quit his job and bought 10 acres of land near his childhood haunts for $10,000.

He built a log cabin from the ground up with materials he sourced from around the property: rocks, worn barn timber, and fallen trees. How-to guides buffeted his carpentry skills, and, in the end, the creative endeavor prompted him to embark on a career as an “outdoor artist.” He earned a graduate art degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and set off on a new career path.

When he began creating his art, he turned to sticks, which are free and plentiful and sparked his fancy just as they had decades earlier. And he opted to go big: “Everyone has a size they’re comfortable working in. Mine is very large.”

The sculpture at Mounts Botanical Garden is Dougherty’s fourth in Florida (he has created pieces at McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach, Pinecrest Gardens in Pinecrest, and the College of Central Florida in Ocala). While its working title is Twisted, Dougherty will leave

the final moniker to spectators once it is completed, as he always does.

Created entirely from nature, all of his works are ephemeral by default. He estimates the Mounts sculpture will stand about three years before it organically comes apart.

But he’s fine with that. “My sculptures are only meant to last a couple of years, but as they disintegrate, they leave behind building materials, perhaps for other artists to use,” Dougherty says. “A lot of things in our world—ourselves included—are temporary, and we have our season. As downtown West Palm Beach continues to transform itself into the coolest neighborhood around, a Magic Garden is set to arrive in CityPlace. The vibrant history of the Palm Beach Zoo began in 1961 with a red barn, which was home to ducks, chickens, rabbits, and one goat named Pepita. As early as 1965, the zoo—then called Dreher Park Farm Zoo—had in its care a rhinoceros iguana, a kangaroo, and an Asian baby elephant. With the help of local citizens, The Zoological Society of the Palm Beaches was founded on March 27, 1969, and the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society was officially born. Today, it is home to more than 550 animals, many of them endangered. “Fifty years has fine-tuned how we inspire visitors to fall in love with amazing animals,” says Margo McKnight, the zoo’s president and CEO. Celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year, the Palm Beach Zoo will host special events, including a Tropical Safari on February 1, where guests can mingle with wildlife. What’s old is new again in Boynton Beach. As part of the Boynton Beach Town Square project, the city is revamping the old high school, built in 1927, to serve as an entertainment and learning hub for the community. The stunning space, originally designed by architect William Manly King and built by Chalker, Lund and Crittenden, features Mediterranean revival–style details like cartouches on the corner towers that depict heraldic shields, wreaths, and torches, as well as notes of the then up-and-coming art deco style. The goal, says Assistant City Manager Colin Grof, is to preserve the aeshetic of the original work while renovating the space to house city adminstrative services, a city library, community meeting space, and a business incubator space. The cultural center will be available for public use through the city’s recreation department, as well as private use (the space can be rented out for events). The center should be ready to open its doors by May, while the entire Boynton Beach Town Square project— which also includes a large open park and amphitheatre—is scheduled for completion in 2021. The rebirth of one of Palm Beach County’s most revered cultural institutions is set to continue Ralph Norton’s legacy long into the future

was to bring the museum into the twenty-first century on multiple levels,” explains Hope Alswang, the museum’s executive director and CEO. The board of trustees, along with an enthusiastic group of generous Palm Beach donors, raised $107 million for a major renovation and expansion.

A donation of $16 million, with an additional $4 million to endow the director’s position, came from the Kenneth C. Griffin Charitable Fund—the largest donation in the Norton’s 78-year history. On February 6, 2016, the Norton broke ground on what was to be a transformative rebuild of the campus under the leadership of Alswang, with the creative architectural design plan conceived by Pritzker Prize– winning British architect Lord Norman Foster, founder and executive chairman of Foster + Partners.

“Art is at the center of the new Norton expansion, and the curators are excited about the reinstallation of our collections and showcasing them in all of our new spaces,” says Cheryl Brutvan, director of curatorial affairs and curator of contemporary art. “This is the most exciting season in the museum’s history, and we feel very fortunate to be part of it.”

At the southern end of the 6.3-acre campus, the former visitors’ parking area and main entrance has become an open-air extension of the museum—Foster’s very first garden. The intriguing design features “garden rooms” that mimic the original pavilions of the 1941 museum master plan, with each room, or space, defined by native trees and plantings. There is an extensive lawn area for outdoor programs and events, an art walk, and the Pamela and Robert B. Goergen Garden featuring 11 modern and contemporary sculptures by artists including Keith Haring, George Rickey, and Mark di Suvero. Artistin-residence accommodations and studios are located in a series of

of clarity to the existing building by reasserting the logic of the original plan; creating new event and visitor spaces that will transform the museum into the social heart of the community; as well as increasing the gallery and exhibition spaces to engage with a wider audience, both local and national.”

The new main entrance lies at the West Wing on South Dixie Highway, graced by the familiar 80-year-old, 65-foot-tall banyan tree at the forecourt and reflecting pool. Anchoring the main entrance is Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s monumental pop art sculpture Typewriter Eraser, Scale X (1998-99), gifted to the museum by Ronnie Heyman.

At the center of the museum is the 3,600-square-foot skylighted Ruth and Carl Shapiro Great Hall, with lounge seating, a coffee bar, a piano and book carts, and a display area for site-specific installations; while the Grand Hall stairway leads visitors between collection galleries in the West Wing. The new design provides 37 percent more exhibition space to display the museum’s permanent collection, with galleries dedicated to

THE COLLECTION At the museum’s core lies the permanent collection established by Ralph and Elizabeth Norton. Norton accumulated his wealth at the Acme Steel Company in Chicago and first came to winter in West Palm Beach with his family in the 1920s. They lived on Barcelona Road in the burgeoning neighborhood of El Cid, a few streets south of the museum (now the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, a separate institution). It was the Nortons’ wish to establish a museum for the community, which would house their collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century sculptures and paintings. The art deco–style, single-story building was conceived by architect Marion Sims Wyeth and opened on February 8, 1941, flanked on either side of the original eastern entrance by two Paul Manship sculptures owned by Norton, Diana and Actaeon (they remain in place to this day). In those early years, the museum was also an educational institution known as the Norton Gallery and School of Art. After Elizabeth’s death, Norton married Ann Weaver, a young established artist and a teacher at the School of Art, who introduced him to a broader perspective and encouraged him to purchase new works to bolster his collection.

Since then, the permanent collection has continued to grow, now encompassing approximately 7,000 objects over five curatorial departments.

sculptors Gaston Lachaise, Theodore Roszak, and William Zorach. After Norton’s death in 1953, new purchases continued to be made and, in 2005, a gift of 19 paintings from Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum was added to the American collection.

The Nortons were also much enamored of ancient Chinese art. They acquired 125 outstanding works of ancient jade and bronze, imperial jade, and hardstone carvings from the early Qing dynasty through to its later periods, as well as a 3,200-year-old bronze casting of a ritual wine-pouring vessel. Subsequent gifts have brought the Chinese collection to 600 objects, including paintings and furniture.

The European collection covers major art movements from the Renaissance through impressionism and modernism. The Delacort Gift, comprising 66 paintings and sculptures by Dutch and Flemish masters and

works from the Barbizon and impressionist movements, was presented to the museum in 2008. Today, the European collection boasts works by some of the greatest artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, among them Claude Monet, Paul Gaugin, Constantin Brancusi, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, and Chaim Soutine, many of which are occasionally lent to major museum exhibitions around the globe.

In recent years, the contemporary art and photography collections have amassed a broad variety of international works, through individual gifts and through funds from the museum’s Contemporary and Modern Art Council. In 1995, Barbara and Melvin Nessel donated 70 pieces in a variety of media. In 2002, Catherine and Gilbert Brownstone gifted 50 works focusing on minimalism.

AND BEYOND… A host of special exhibitions are being mounted to celebrate the Norton’s opening. Visitors will have a first look at an exceptional group of sixteenthcentury paintings depicting the Nanjing Lantern Festival, which concludes celebrations for the Chinese New Year. The six recently acquired works were extensively conserved through the generosity of John and Heidi Niblack. “As a student and collector of Chinese art, it has been a privilege to have contributed to the preservation and conservation of such a rare

treasure that will reside in the museum’s permanent Chinese collection,” says John Niblack, vice chairman of the museum’s board of trustees.

The Norton will also celebrate the exceptional collectors residing in South Florida, says Brutvan, who reveals that she is currently organizing two site-specific installations inspired by the new building as well as the next installment of Recognition of Art by Women.

Of course, education is essential to the museum’s mission. The William Randolph Hearst Education Center provides two new classrooms and

a student gallery. “Thanks to the support of the Hearst Foundation and others, new programs will be added including an Arts Leader Speaker Series, featuring renowned artists and other leading figures,” says Curator of Education Glenn Tomlinson. A Live at the Norton concert series will offer performances for families, while school groups will be able to take part in post-exhibit art classes. For adults, visiting scholars and artists will lead seminar sessions and workshops.

Other highlights, adds Tomlinson, include a Summer Teacher’s Institute, more opportunities for teens to engage with the museum, and new day-long festivals.

“The building will become an inspirational and educational gathering space for the community, as well as a tourist destination and an institution that serious art collectors would view as a future home for their collections,” concludes Alswang, who, having nurtured the renovation project to its successful conclusion, will pass the baton to a new director when she retires in March.

BY DAPHNE NIKOLOPOULOS Place has such a profound effect on creative expression that art evolves, often markedly, as an artist’s environment changes. For photographer Joyce Tenneson, a move from New York City to mid-coast Maine resulted in a drastic shift in her work.

“In New York City, I was working almost exclusively with people,” she says of her famous images of women, which have been featured in international exhibitions, on the covers of magazines like Time and Life and books like Alice Hoffman’s The Dovekeepers, and even in an Absolut vodka ad. “I didn’t want to repeat myself.

With every new life you have, things change and you need to find out who you are in that new life.”

Tenneson, who winters in West Palm Beach, turned her focus to nature and, specifically, trees. Ever since her exhibition on trees at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 1978, she had felt a strong connection to the subject. But in Maine, where forests and orchards exude an almost mystical quality, it took on new significance.

“One morning, I woke up to a view of Rockport Harbor and saw the fog rolling in,” she recalls. “The fog became almost like a backdrop, isolating the trees and hiding everything behind them. I had an epiphany: When you remove all distractions, you can see the tree’s noble nature. That was going to be my next project.”

For almost two years, she would drive within a 20-mile radius on foggy mornings, seeking the magical scenes that are now part of her Trees and the Alchemy of Light collection. But photographing the trees was not enough for Tenneson. Inspired by a trip to Peru, where gold was connected to the divine during the Inca empire, she taught herself the art of goldleafing—a meticulous and rather fragile process of painting gold leaf onto a block of wood. She then transferred her tree images onto the gold and fused the two using various preservatives.

It was not easy, but for Tenneson, who has been named among the 10 most influential women in the history of photography by readers of American Photo magazine, it was a necessary step in bringing out the mystical, spiritual qualities of trees. “I’ve always tried to photograph things in a way that opens up a transformative experience,” she says. ‡ Joyce Tenneson will lecture about Trees and the Alchemy of Light on March 23 at JL Modern Gallery in Palm Beach. THE COLLECTION OF THE ELSONS REPRESENTS A LIFE FILLED WITH ADVENTURE AND MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS

Throughout their 61 years of marriage, Ambassador Edward Elson and his wife, Susie, have enjoyed a life of distinguished public and community service and philanthropy. While Ed served as U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Susie was receiving a string of awards for her own service—as volunteer chair and trustee of many educational and art institutions and a staunch advocate for mental health. After living in Atlanta for more than 40 years, the Elsons made their home in Palm Beach in 1999, where Susie is currently chair of the board of The Society of the Four Arts and was honored as a Palm Beach Woman of Distinction in 2014.

It is here, in their Palm Beach home, that the Elsons proudly display their eclectic art. It’s a superior collection that grew out of the couple’s mutual love of craft, a genre that Susie, in particular, has long been fond of. She was involved in the early days of the American Craft Council

in New York City (now the Museum of Art and Design), where she served as chair from 1989 to 1992, was given the title “Visionary” in 1996, and remains an honorary trustee today.

Ed gives much of the credit for their finds to his wife. “Her genius is to identify talent,” he says. Case in point: The Elsons were at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum when Susie fell for a piece by Wisconsin-based contemporary glass artist Harvey Littleton. That led to the acquisition of one of his pieces—and the beginning of the Elson Collection of Contemporary Glass, which is now with the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

Susie and Ed have always believed in forming relationships with the artists and commissioning pieces directly (around 75 percent of their collection are straight commissions). In 1983, when Ed’s business took the couple to London for the next 32 years, Susie recalls: “I was running around commissioning all this stuff for the house, and I suddenly panicked and thought, How is all this stuff going to live together?” It was then that she learned an important lesson about collecting from her friend Dan Klein, Christie’s director of twentieth-century decorative arts. “He said, if one person does the picking with a single sensibility, everything will get along fine in the same room.”

in furniture. They met a group of fresh, young designers who were rooming together in the city: Ron Arad, Tom Dixon, Danny Lane, and André Dubreuil. “At the time, we were their only customers,” says Susie. “We commissioned pieces and purchased early Arad pieces.” Furniture has since become an important part of their collection. Susie reckons she was drawn to contemporary designer furniture as a reaction to the Chippendale chairs and “brown” furniture of her parents’ home.

Spine Chair. Perhaps most intriguing, however, is a piece by Greek artist Lucas Samaras, Sculpture Table (1981). Inspired by Dante’s “Inferno,” bronze and silver plates form a group of 20 twisted human forms atop a silver-plated table.

Leading off the master bedroom is Ed’s light-filled study. In front of the United States flag and the Presidential flag flown by ambassadors stands the spectacular Castle desk and chair. Created in 1999, the desk—with its smooth, bold, rounded sides in ebonized mahogany and lace wood—is truly fit for an ambassador.

A powerful and poetic portrait of Ed in the hallway was done by Danish realist Thomas Kluge—and the story of how it came to be is quite interesting. Queen Margrethe of Denmark had read a newspaper article where Ed had decried the fact that there were so many paintings in The National History Museum at Frederiksborg Castle depicting military defeats rather than celebrating the bravery of Danish troops. The queen agreed such a piece should be commissioned and assigned Ed to select the artist. His search led him to the then little-known Kluge, who finished A Short Stay, showing Danish U.N. soldiers in Bosnia, in 1998. Kluge was then commissioned to paint portraits of the Danish Royal Family, making him the most famous contemporary portrait painter in Denmark.

The portrait of Ed is a symbol of Kluge’s gratitude. In the work, the artist likens Ed to a magician who changed the relationship between their two countries, not to mention also made Kluge famous. Ed is wearing the sash and badge of the Grand Cross of the Danish Order of Dannebrog First Class, a personal award bestowed by the sovereign.

While Susie and Ed no longer add to their collection, much of which has been given to museums and university collections, they look back on their journey with abundant pleasure. Each piece has a story; each piece represents a relationship cultivated with an artist. Because of that, it would be impossible to choose a favorite, says Susie. “Do you have a favorite child?” she quips. “No! Each piece is different, and each one has a story connecting it with the artist and has an experience involved. That is part of the joy of the whole thing.” ‡

After the show, take a short walk west on Clematis Street to spy one of the city’s hidden gems: Eduardo Kobra’s explosively colorful mural of Albert Einstein. The must-see piece of public art is located just outside Subculture Coffee, one of West Palm Beach’s coolest locally owned cafés.

Then pull up a seat at nearby Italian gastropub Hullabaloo for a nightcap.

Their handcrafted cocktails are all named after famous musicians—like the John Lennon, made with vodka, fresh strawberries, and basil. Staying the night? Check in at the Hilton West Palm Beach, a newer hotel with a focused local-art aesthetic.

Running through March 31 is Profiles of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors, a series of portraits

by President George W. Bush depicting members of the U.S. military. Then make your way over to the King Library, a newly rehabilitated architectural gem originally built in 1936, for a tour.

Next up is the nearby Henry Morrison Flagler Museum—and prepare to be wowed. The main attraction here is Whitehall, a 75-room mansion built

by Standard Oil cofounder Henry Flagler as a gift to his wife, Mary Lily Kenan. The building itself is a gold-andwhite testament to America’s Gilded Age, representing the historic decadence of Palm Beach’s past with a lion’s share of era-appropriate art decorating its walls.

One of the county’s oldest attractions, this museum is a definitive stop on any journey to The Palm Beaches.

2 P.M. With a satisfied tummy, embark on a quick ride south to Delray Beach. First stop is the 41-year-old, calminducing backdrop to any art-filled afternoon: the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. A cultural tribute to Delray Beach’s pioneering Yamato farming colony, the museum is perhaps most famous for its collection of six Roji-en (“drops of dew”) gardens. Here, life seems simple, quiet, and relaxed. You might want to take a mental snapshot of the scenery to reflect upon during life’s more hectic moments. Stop by the museum’s galleries on the way out for an additional visual treat before heading east to downtown.

Today, it comprises four separate arts structures: the Cornell Art Museum, the Crest Theatre, the Fieldhouse, and the Pavilion. Walk east on Atlantic Avenue to City Oyster, a primo spot to dine on the sweet, briny delights of the sea. Then head over to Arts Garage for a night of music. Located on 2nd Avenue, Arts Garage is tucked beneath a four-story parking garage (hence the name) and employs a loose BYOW (“bring your own whatever”) food and drink policy. But don’t be fooled by its façade, because this is where South Florida’s best local bands and musicians come to play. When the curtain comes down, take a brief walk through the surrounding arts district, Pineapple Grove, keeping your eyes peeled for all the eclectic murals in the neighborhood.

11 P.M. Time to unwind back at the impressive Seagate Hotel & Spa on E. Atlantic Avenue. Take a dip in the secluded, private pool or have a drink at the resort’s posh Atlantic Grille amidst a 2,500-gallon shark tank before calling it a night.

SUNDAY, 9 A.M. Cap off the weekend in Boca Raton, just a few minutes south of Delray Beach. The coral-toned town is the perfect place to pick up a memento to remember your trip. Stroll through the shopping district of Mizner Park— named for the county’s preeminent architect, Addison Mizner—to find the perfect souveneir while taking in the gorgeous Mediterranean design Palm Beach County is known for.

MASTER OF ILLUSION “Perceiving harmony, even in situations that appear chaotic from the inside” is what drives sculptor Sayaka Ganz. BITES BREWERY BOOM STEAM HORSE It’s been a busy year for the local craft brewing scene.

Prosperity Brewers and American Craft Aleworks opened in Boca Raton; Dave Mathews created his namesake brewhouse and taproom in Lake Worth complete with a dog-friendly beer garden. Most of the attention, however, went to Steam Horse Brewing Co., the latest addition to West Palm Beach’s expanding Warehouse District. The venture is backed by the team that brought us Twisted Trunk Brewing in Palm Beach Gardens and Tequesta Brewing Company.

Abandoned buildings, intricate spider webs, lined old faces... The photographs of Brian Cattelle convey the exquisite beauty of a moment, often exuding from unlikely places. In his mixed-media series Imitation Street Art, he layered found objects like old fences and flyers with portraits of people he met on the streets to mimic the backdrop of urban art. In San Francisco, he met Ted (left). “His eyes speak the truth of his life and the streets,” says Cattelle.
