Retroids Arcade Bar is leveling up!

R

their name and sport three bold blue words "Pinball. Pixels. Pints." as well as one stating "Doin' our own damn thing since 2018."

etroids Arcade Bar in Worcester is leveling up! They're expanding from their spot on New Street and gearing up for a grand move to a bigger venue in the heart of Worcester.

At Retroids, you'll find classic arcade games, pinball machines, and a bar stocked with craft beers, ciders and cocktails. Plus, although the original venue on New Street will be closed for general admission, it'll stil be available for private hire seven days a week.

The new site on College Street, right across from Worcester Cathedral, used to be home to the Worcester Cycle Centre.

And is three times the size of their current location on New Street.

xpansion work is in full swing at Laylocks Garden Centre in Cotheridge near Worcester, and the goal is to unveil the new development come March 2024.

But that's not all – brace yourself for a larger home & lifestyle department and an even more fabulous Christmas department to sprinkle that extra magic during the festive season.

According to Hannah Warr, one of the centre's directors, the excitement is building. "This is going to really make a mark for us," she said.

Currently, they say they're "quite small" on the retail side, but once this expansion wraps up, they're promising to be your one-stop shop for everything garden-related.

The expansion will give the centre over 650sqm of additional retail space, a revamped restaurant, a fresh layout featuring a new entrance, and a sprucedup plant and landscape area.

Hannah also said they're anticipating a five to ten percent increase in staff numbers once the doors swing open on the new development.

Planning officers emphasised the role the garden centre plays in the local rural economy, stating that the expansion would give it an extra boost.

In their report, they noted, "The proposal represents an investment in the existing garden centre. The garden centre and associated horticultural nursery contribute to rural economic prosperity. The proposed development will allow the site to continue and enhance its role within the rural economy without affecting the viability of the nearest shopping centre." n

New Harm Reduction Drop-In Service Launches in Evesham

aggs Day Centre have launched their second harm reduction dropin service every Tuesday between 1pm and 3pm at Wallace House, Evesham As part of the Harm Reduction service, the team will offer clean works, Naxolone provision and training, BBV testing and a safe space to talk about alcohol and substance use for anyone in the community who needs it.

Steph, Harm Reduction Worker at Maggs Day Centre, explains, “I was delighted to develop our first Harm Reduction dropin at Wallace House. The team there is super proactive in offering their guests all they can to enhance their lifestyles for the better, and this opportunity allows my service users to have a safe place to utilise the harm reduction services or offer a safe place to come for a simple chat.

“Having our Outreach team based at Wallace House has been essential to building the foundations to include our Harm Reduction facilities now, so we’re thrilled that we’re now able to offer our service users this life-changing service.”

The Worcester 100 Open Art Exhibition

iscover the Worcester 100 Open Art Exhibition hosted at The Artery Studios - an ode to Worcester's distinctive creative community, extending a warm welcome to participants of all levels, ages, backgrounds, and experiences. The term "open" truly signifies inclusivity.

From Friday 1st March to Sunday 10th March 2024, The Artery Gallery will come alive with a diverse display of 100 artistic creations from Worcester's local talents, spanning paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, ceramics, and more.

There's no rigorous selection process; the first 100 entries are guaranteed success.

Secure your spot by purchasing it through the Artery's ticket shop, fill out the artwork submission form by January 31st, and deliver your masterpiece on either Thursday 29th February or Friday 1st March. The Artery will take care of the rest.

with a garden build A new-build garden might seem daunting, but it’s the perfect place to find your inner gardener and put your creativity into practice.

N

ew-build gardens present a unique set of challenges and opportunities. A plot which has been laid entirely to lawn can often look a bit uninspiring – don't be put off – there's a lot you can do to get the best from your space!

Where to begin...

The best way to get started is to spend some time gathering inspiration, assessing your garden and creating a plan. Then you can do it bit by bit as time and money allow. Remember - you don't have to do it all at once.

Sorting out your soil One of the most common problems people face with new-build gardens is the soil. It can be compacted, poor quality, and full of rubble and rubbish. Don't panic! There are lots of things you can do to improve the soil around new-build houses.

The best place to start is to sort out your design and put in any paths, stepping stones and other hard landscaping first. That way you can avoid getting bogged down every time you step outdoors. It’s also much easier to get it done before you’ve added plants as you won’t be having to avoid damaging precious new specimens.

Dig over soil that is going to be used for plants or lawns, removing any rubble and buried rubbish as you go. Digging is important as it will help break up compaction and allow plants to put down decent roots. Add soil conditioner such as farmyard manure (not multipurpose compost) and fork it into the soil – at least a bucketful per square metre. This will help 10

improve drainage and fertility and help your plants get established.

If there are areas you're not going to get round to planting immediately, mulch them to cover the soil surface and prevent weeds from growing. Chipped bark is ideal because as it breaks down it will gradually improve soil structure.

Grow your own privacy Lack of privacy is a common problem in new-build gardens, and there are various ways to tackle it. Planting trees is one of the best solutions – there are many trees suitable for small gardens. It's generally best to buy young-ish plants and let them get established – they'll soon romp away.

Other garden features such as trellises and pergolas can be useful for adding visual interest and privacy to gardens. New gardens can lack height so they're a useful way of getting it quickly, especially when planted with climbers.

Pick your plants Once you’ve got your design together, it's time to start thinking about the plants – check out our plant selector for more help.

Include some fast-growing, tough plants to give you some quick-fire flower power – buddleias, mallows (Lavatera), hardy annuals like poppies and cornflowers are all good choices. They will give you quick, colourful results for not much money. Some patio pots and windowboxes will provide instant colour too, but beware having too many pots as they can be time-consuming to look after.

One of the most noticeable things about a new-build garden can be the feeling of being boxed in by walls and fences. It can be worth painting or staining fences a darker colour to make them less visually overwhelming. Darker colours can also help highlight the plants in front of the fence. To make your garden feel established quickly, use trellis panels covered in climbers, along with a few larger plants to break up the visual impact of its boundaries.

Get planting Autumn and spring are the best times for planting, although it can be done at any time of year, as long as the soil isn’t frozen.

Lawns and turf If you would like to grow a lawn, the best months for either laying turf or sowing grass seed are April and October. It's really important to make sure the soil is well prepared for either. If the developer has left you with a lawn, it may well need repairing.

One of the quickest and most satisfying ways to stamp your identity on a new garden is to re-shape the lawn – circles and gentle curves can work really well in small plots.

One strategy involves the rewiring of neural pathways in the brain to alter its perception and processing of pain signals.

This transformation can be attained through practices like mindfulness coaching, meditation, and the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). By reshaping the brain’s response to pain, individuals coping with chronic pain can acquire improved pain management skills, alleviate anxiety and fear, and enhance their wellbeing.

Another approach revolves around activating the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for promoting relaxation, rest, and digestion. Activation of this system can help reduce stress, anxiety, and fear—factors that contribute to chronic pain.

Techniques such as deep breathing, muscle-relaxing massages, and aromatherapy can stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, diminishing the fear of pain.

Crucially, crafting a personalised treatment plan in collaboration with a healthcare professional is essential to cater to individual needs and objectives. With the right strategy and mindset, it is possible to mitigate the fear and anxiety connected to chronic pain, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling life.

rimstone Beads & Gifts was an independent store owned by Wendy Foster that first opened its doors in 1998.

Frank Edwards was employed at Regent Galleries, situated in the same courtyard, from 1997 until its closure in 2005. It was at this juncture that the framing service made its transition to Brimstone Gallery & Gifts under Frank's expertise. For 15 years, Frank diligently provided framing services in Reindeer Court.

Throughout this time, Wendy and Frank faced challenges such as rising rent costs, vacant storefronts, and a decrease in foot traffic within the courtyard. So, in 2019, after 21 years, Brimstone Gallery & Gifts sadly closed its doors.

The closure was difficult for Wendy and Frank, who had served wonderful individuals and formed lasting friendships.

Despite these changes, Frank's drive for bringing customers' artwork to life has only intensified.

Presently, he operates as a residential picture framer, working from a custom-designed cellar workshop. Meanwhile, Wendy divides her time between various painting projects in her loft studio and other commitments. 'Worcestershire' England is made up of 48 Counties and many have been altered over the many centuries they have been in existence.

9 of these are classified as Historic Counties due to the fact they date back to at least the Norman Conquest. However these boundaries would have originated further back in time when most of the world was inhabited by tribes or powerful family groups.

By the Iron Age, most of Europe was controlled by these powerful and often warring tribes. They are often referred to as the ‘Celts’. This word comes from the word ‘Keltoi’ or tribal group. At the time, Britain was not really seen as an Island, but just another bit of land with tribes related to those in Europe. The sea joined the tribes and did not separate them.

These tribes would have used natural boundaries such as prominent stones, rivers, woods and, at times, marker posts.

These would have changed over hundreds of years, with marriages, battles and treaties altering them.

During the Iron Age, Worcestershire itself did not exist but the area was home to the Dobunni tribe. This tribes area also covered Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and at some point, parts of Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Monmouthshire.

The Romans began to move out of Italy and create an Empire. Tribes fought the Romans as they expanded and many tribes were wiped out or surrendered to Roman rule. In 43AD, the Emperor Claudius landed on the South Coast of what they called Britannia. They moved North and arrived in the land of the Dobunni around 50AD. Evidence shows the Dobunni lived in small, scattered settlements made up of roundhouses, built in the many fertile River valleys. The Romans said their tribal capital was in Corinium Dobunnorum, or modern day Cirencester.

They had their own Kings who included Catti, Corio, Comux and Bodvoc. We know very little about these powerful men due to the fact Iron Age culture followed the oral

The Hill Forts today are still very visible. This is the ditch and rampart on Bredon Hill

tradition of passing on information, unlike the Romans who recorded everything in stone and bronze inscriptions.

It is not known for sure where the tribal name came from. It may have come from 'Bune' meaning cup or vessel. It may have come from the word 'Bouda' meaning the Victorious People. Some consider the tribal name comes from the word 'Dubh' meaning the dark haired people.

The land of the Dobunni was covered in well-made earth and timber Hill Forts. These fortified places are still being studied, with archaeologists and historians discussing whether they were permanently occupied or not. British Camp on the Malvern Hills, Bredon Hill near Pershore and Woodbury Hill near Great Witley are just a few forts that can be visited today in Worcestershire.

The Dobunni tribe capitulated to the Romans and seemed to have embraced Roman rule from the very beginning. This was quite common and was described by the Roman historian, Dio Cassius, who said the people were peaceful, despite the powerful Celt chiefs, Caratacus and Togodumnus moving through the area as they withdrew from the Roman Legions.

The Romans would have seen the good farmland and the rich tidal River Severn that flowed through to the Bristol Channel. The Roman settlers would have farmed the area and fished the river just like the Dobunni people that shared the land with them.

The Dobunni would have seen improved roads, rectangular buildings, Great Villas, precious glassware and a new language and monetary system. Trade would have also become much more global than it had been. Goods grown and manufactured in our County could have been traded and used anywhere in the Roman Empire. An Empire that would stretch from Hadrian’s Wall to North Africa, Spain to Syria.

If you’ve always wanted to learn a particular skill, or enjoy sharing your knowledge with others, u3a could be a good option for you.

What is u3a? u3a is a nationwide network of learning groups aimed at encouraging older people to share their knowledge, skills and interests in a friendly environment. There are no exams and no homework, just regular lessons or study groups. It's learning for fun, not with the aim of gaining qualifications.

Who can attend u3a classes?

There are no age limits but the u3a is for people 'no longer in full time work' –retired

If you live in an isolated town, are unwell or have difficulty leaving your home, you may prefer Virtual u3a. This is an online learning and discussion forum for older people around the world.

What can I learn at a u3a class?

There’s a wide range of subjects you can learn at u3a and on Virtual u3a.

These include: arts, history, literature & language, crafts, gardening, photography and computer & digital technology skills.

Sometimes u3a groups arrange trips to museums, concerts or theatres.

If there’s enough demand in your area for a certain subject, you can start up a group yourself. Each group has its own volunteer leader or co-ordinator who has a particular interest or expertise in the particular subject.

For language classes, most of the group leaders tend to have specialist knowledge, or they may be native speakers of the language they’re teaching.

How much does a u3a class cost?

ost years I head to the northeast coast and marvel at the birds flying into the UK over the North Sea. This year, they had Storm Babet at their back but, regardless of how much help the weather

can provide, their migration blows my mind. Fieldfares and redwings are quite chunky birds – similar in size, more or less, to our garden blackbirds – but they bring with them delicate blackcaps and tiny goldcrests.

Each autumn, as temperatures drop in Scandinavia, Iceland and eastern Europe, birds head our way. Some continue through the UK to even warmer climates of Spain and France but others tend to stick with us for the winter. Included in this number are thousands of fieldfares, redwings, song thrushes

and blackbirds – our winter thrushes. If you’re out for a walk in the countryside, listen for the ‘chack-chack’ of fieldfares or the ‘tseep’ of redwings as your presence disturbs their feeding and they fly off. Whilst the ground is soft enough, you may spot them hunting worms and ground invertebrates in fields. You might watch them filling their bellies with fallen fruit in orchards; keep an eye on the fruit tree in your garden if you’re lucky enough to have the space. Alternatively, you could just as easily spot them gobbling down bright berries from rowans, hawthorns and ivy.

How will you know what you’re looking for? Fieldfares are the bigger of the two species with a grey head that leads to brown on the wings and back. They have a white neck and chest that’s dotted with spots; more mature adults show a beautiful peachy colouring down either side of their chest. Redwings

are similar to our song thrushes in their brown colouring but look for a bold eye stripe and a flash of red under their wings.

If you see a flock take off, you might be able to spot the white ‘armpits’ of the fieldfares contrasted against the red ‘armpits’ of the redwings.

These may be hardy souls that brave harsh weather and tall seas to visit us each winter but they might still benefit from a helping hand. If the weather goes really cold this winter and you’ve got a few apples you can throw out of your door, you might be rewarded with these handsome birds joining their more familiar garden cousins. If you don’t have your own garden but have a wall that you can grow a berried creeper onto, consider planting an ivy or pyracantha to provide a future feast for winter thrushes and other birds.
