TREES ARBOR DAY

As we celebrate Arbor Day with these beautiful photographs of trees from four distinguished Virginia artists, it is worth remembering that 150 years ago Julius Sterling Morton first planted trees on a “flat stretch of desolate plain” in Nebraska and declared the first Arbor Day in hopes that people across the country would plant trees and recognize their ecological importance. Today, we understand their immense value in holding eroded soil, providing a diverse habitat for wildlife, absorbing carbon dioxide from our polluted atmosphere and exhaling oxygen, offering shade and beauty to our urban streets, and giving us a quiet refuge to escape to and cleanse our spirit.
