DREAMS BETWEEN VALLEY & BAY
ARTIST STATEMENT:
I recently found myself reflecting on my work as a whole. “Is there a theme that connects it all? “Where does my inspiration come from?” These and other similar questions sparked a realization that, to me, landscape and sense of place are intertwined ribbons, tying together the pieces of my memory that are found in each composition.
This exhibition is presented as part of a larger, ongoing project featuring the Shenandoah Valley, the Blueridge Mountains, and the Chesapeake Bay watershed. I see the water flow and the mountains bow and it brings me back to when I was seven years old, fishing on the Potomac River with my grandfather, now knowing that the very water our boat bobbed up and down on would eventually travel to the Chesapeake Bay where I own a home.
The James River and surrounding Richmond areas have made their way into this dreamlike body of work due to the Library of Congress’s public domain images and the mesmerizing journey I have only just begun, wading through the thousands of old photographs that will serve as raw material.
The themes an artist creates his work around can be steadfast or everchanging, and my work stands proudly in between, evoking memories from which invented scenes are born.
