DRAGANA CRNJAK ARTIST STATEMENT Driven by questions of belonging, my studio practice has been centered around the ideas of displacement and identity. I approach mark-making as tracing fragmented architectural and natural landscapes to suggests spaces in transition - still being shaped, built or erased. While focusing strongly on the visual presence of the work and the physicality of the mark, I am simultaneously fascinated by the impalpable. My interest in perception has often been inspired by peripheral visions of surrounding environments and memories of places, the loose perceptions of the fleeting moments that leave undefined impressions – formations allusive enough to trigger curiosity and suggest potential new structures. While driven by dichotomies between the physical and impalpable, I am simultaneously focused on the poetics of visual language, exploring proximities between the shapes and suggested formations, as well as the tensions and softness of the spaces in between. My fascination with geometry and patterns has been inspired by ethnic Serbian embroideries, urban design and architecture, as well as patterns found in nature and digital realms. While embracing repetition and order, I am restlessly interrupting the same – seeking my place at peripheries of spaces.
