DSGN 111: d.Make

1st Year Studio Spring 2019 Nolan Golgert The focus for this semester was diving into the design process of making. This included learning how to use foam, wood, and cement. I also developed my craft, time management, and drawing skills. While this was in my first year of schooling, this project is my favorite.

Project One: The first project focused on abstraction. My inspiration came from a Lebbeus Woods drawing and “Space Oddity” by David Bowie. I combined the two into the space image, and then abstracted that into the chipboard model.

Precedents: Next, I used the song “Avril 14” by Aphex Twin, as well as using Lebbeeus Woods’s drawing and “Space Oddity.”

Design: In “Avril 14,” the piano in the song reminds me of rain, so I created the small holes to mimic rainfall. The music quality sounds like it is being played on a record, which reminded me of the nostalgia of days past. I designed the interior so the outer spaces had more light, representing recent memory. The inner most space is dark, representing nostalgic old memories.

Space Positive Model

Concrete Base

“Mars landscape” model Key Features:

The planes are used to not only divide the space, but placed so they reflect the different shadows. The concrete base is a representation of the chipboard model that was re-purposed from project one. The narrative I created was if Major Tom didn’t die in the song “Space Oddity” but crash landed on Mars and built a home out of the spaceship parts. The space positive model was an exploration into woodworking. I had to create the various slots, dots, and holes, as well as leave spaces for the planes. The model is in different sections, not just one shape.
