Celebration Values Centered Education for the Leaders of the New Century

The students are at the center of what we do so all deliberations begin with them. How do we retain the advantages, yet manage the hurdles, inherent in a small school?

“ ,” the theme of this Annual Report, aptly describes our just-concluded 40th Anniversary year. We had much to celebrate. We took full advantage last year of the opportunity to honor our past with picnics, music, an oral and written history, a rededication ceremony, and many more special events in which many of you participated. It was glorious and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Now, we look ahead. Recently, in that all-too-brief period called summer during which school administrators tie up the loose ends of one year and prepare for another, I took the opportunity to stroll along the hill above the campus. I looked down on the buildings, the beautiful rural setting which is the gift of those who preceded me, and asked myself, “What vision am I — are we — carrying forward as we move into the 21st century?

Many of you are already engaged in helping us plan for our immediate future. You have completed questionnaires or are participating in discussion groups that provide essential feedback for a strategic plan.

The students are at the center of what we do so all deliberations begin with them. How do we retain the advantages, yet manage the hurdles, inherent in a small school? How can we provide the special opportunities required by students with extraordinary academic, athletic or artistic interests and aptitudes? What sort of ingenuity will we need to provide challenges on a more individual basis? Holly Thompson, our new Academic Dean speaks of helping each student find his or her passion. Where will the necessary experiences, equipment, peer and adult support come from?

Our discussions fall roughly into four areas and the first two actually support the third.

Facilities: We need more space - but not necessarily traditional classrooms and offices. We are studying the possibility of reconfiguration. The library might move to the assembly hall to join the computer center in creating a more comprehensive media research and technology area. A student center could fill the vacated library space. Our dream is of a

Fine Arts and Communications Center to support this blossoming aspect of our community life. “Red Square” might become a newly landscaped “St. Benedict Square.”

Additional faculty housing might enhance our sense of community while meeting the problems caused by Bay Area real estate prices.

Finance: Our financial support consists of tuition, gift support and endowment. Last year, we learned we were behind comparable independent schools in tuition and endowment. Our parents understood and accepted our tuition increase, which permitted us to raise teacher salaries to a more competitive level. At the same time we continued to make significant strides in gift support, which was up 30%. The challenge of building our endowment remains.

Faculty and Staff: We have a clear identity as a place of student-centered learning and values-centered education.

Our style actually requires more of teachers than traditional education. It calls for a teacher with a particular perspective and even a special temperament. To attract and retain these individuals, we need adequate compensation, a welcoming educational environment, and opportunities for professional growth. We know we are on the right track with our professional development program. See the article on pages 5 and 6. And we are moving quickly in the other areas, as I explained.

Benedictine Tradition: Our commitment goes beyond college preparatory education, as important as that is. We are here also to teach the values of a life well lived. This fourth point, Benedictine tradition, has the most meaning for me.

Last summer, when I was walking along the hilltop and looking down on the campus, the first building I saw was the monastery. This is our foundation, and we must continue to find ways of sustaining our heritage, even as the number of those choosing a religious life declines. By staying true to the origin and mission represented by that small, plain building, I believe we can assure that Woodside Priory School will continue to flourish and its mission will continue to unfold.

I want to thank all of you who celebrated with us last year, welcome everyone who is new to the Priory community this year and encourage all of you to join in the rewarding task of building the Woodside Priory of the next decade.

oodside Priory School ended its first 40 years with a flourish! Gift support increased 30 per cent over the previous year, which had increased 90 per cent over the year before that. This year we are again fully enrolled with a diverse, energetic, highly capable and delightful student body. About 20 percent of our students receive some scholarship support. We begin our fifth decade with a momentum and vitality that bodes well for the school’s future. The hard work of volunteers and the generosity of donors have given us these promising results, and we are grateful to them, one and all. Thank you very much. I hope you will enjoy reading about the successes highlighted in this report.

Facilities: Eight new Chapel pews were finished over the summer with Father Martin’s personal touch. Other facilities improvements include a cottage-like student store on Red Square, several upgrades to sports facilities (including acoustics, refinishing the gym floor and the outdoor basketball courts). Dormitories have new closets and mattresses. The Assembly Hall has fans. Church Square is newly re-paved with attractive masonry. Signs and banners, roofing and road repairs, locks and lockers, paint and carpets and two additional vans were also added or improved.

Academics: Woodside Priory is in the second year of an effort to lift faculty salaries, benefits and professional development opportunities. The goal is to ensure that Woodside Priory will attract and retain top teaching talent. Parent and gift support in 1997-98 made a critical difference in faculty recruiting last spring. The abilities and academic credentials of new faculty are possibly the best ever. Professional development is essential to retaining top faculty and we are doing well; see our report on the next page.

What Matters Most is Support for Outstanding

Three-fourths of the faculty spent Summer 1998 re-tooling themselves and their courses for this academic year.

Team building and fostering a sense of community within an international group were issues addressed at the Residential Life conference attended by WPS Director Kathy Immel. Priory resident students, joined by several faculty and administrators, started the year with a twoday canoe trip down the Russian River.

B

eing a teacher in a good, small school requires a certain kind of magic. The act of teaching is the part of the job that shows. Underneath, teachers must also be quick-change artists, skilled at reading their audience - in this case, students - and the resources around them. They must be quick to respond every year with a curriculum and club program that best suits individual talents and individual classes. Their work must acknowledge the changes in their field of expertise. It must be seamless - it must blend in with last year and next year, with no rough edges showing.

Fortunately, Priory teachers seem to thrive on change. Donor support makes possible the faculty’s most important tool, which is funding for summer professional development and for new technology.

“The faculty support program here is extraordinary. Of course, it is also expensive. We could not possibly provide it if we relied only on the tuition portion of our income.

“The summer grants are entirely funded by gift support. Donors like the program because their contributions have a positive impact which is both immediate and long term,” said Doug Ayer, WPS Director of Development.

Three-fourths of the faculty chose to spend Summer 1998 re-tooling themselves and their courses for this academic year. To qualify, each teacher wrote a grant proposal last spring and the granting committee awarded 42 projects (some teachers received more

than one grant).

Here are a few of the changes students will experience this year as a result of summer grants:

• In sixth grade, Mitch Neuger is integrating a “responsive classroom” concept. It involves teaching students how to create a positive social environment as a natural part of their academic learning. (See photo) • The college counseling office now has additional computers and software to assist students with their planning process.

• Kim (Stoner) Heffernan, Helen O’Hara, Tom Webb and Mitch Neuger are using “History Alive,” an exciting teaching process that calls on students to interact with information, not just listen or read.

Their Middle School students will dramatize historical issues and work on projects that build critical thinking skills (such as comparisons and analysis, rather than recitation of facts). Students also learn academic skills, such as note-taking and monitoring their own discussion groups, while learning history concepts.

• AP courses are newly strengthened, or are being newly offered. In line with trends on the AP US History exam, Jim Lawhon spent time intergrating more social history into his class. Jim also studied the AP European History course material and primary source material and has re-designed his course based on that information. Steve Marsheck expanded his AB Calculus to include the BC (second semester) components. David Hafleigh designed a course offering in AP Statistics.

• Kim Mason’s physical education students will make use of math and science knowledge in using new technical equipment - a heart rate monitor, a Star Trac treadmill, and a body composition and

fitness analyzer. Ms. Mason is also introducing a wide range of new teaching materials dealing with health and social issues pertinent to teen years everything from conflict and stress management to human growth and nutrition.

• Algebra students already use graphing calculators, a tool that is fundamental to success in the higher math/AP classes. David Hafleigh and Nancy Newman have integrated additional skill building into their course materials.

• Art students are working with the disciplines of history, criticism, aesthetics and production (of a product) as a result of Cayewah Easley’s work over the summer. Ms. Easley also planned out new courses in ceramics and design. Last year, students learned to present slide lectures in their ceramics class. Building on their enthusiasm, Ms. Easley asked for and received a digital camera, a writable CD ROM drive and a flatbed scanner.

Now students can archive their own materials and prepare professional-quality presentations. Check the Priory web site for a detailed article. (http:// www.woodsidepriory.com - click on Priorities Magazine: Arts and Technology Team) • Physics students will extend their experience with computer-based interactive problem solving and lab work, as well as more Internet-based research. Paul Trudelle pioneered this area of science teaching with his eighth grade class last year. David Hall’s chemistry students will make use of a wide variety of technical instrumentation tools (see photo).

• The student yearbook, school newspaper and literary magazine have new production equipment and curricula. Faculty advisors are devoting extra attention to strengthening their student publications this year.

In all, eight grants were awarded to support curricular developments in science and math; five each in foreign languages, English and social studies;

four in fine arts, and one in physical education.

A few summer projects supported other aspects of campus life. Several student body officers learned and practiced leadership skills at a week-long conference.

Four faculty members/ administrators spent a week with other educators from Pacific Rim countries, discussing cultural issues, use of technology, current research in learning theory and other common interests. Father Maurus and Hovey Clark used grant funds to lead a student trip to Costa Rica, where they studied rain forest ecology.

The list goes on, but we will stop here. All participating faculty members made brief presentations to their colleagues at the first faculty meeting of the year. Teachers follow up with each other throughout the school year, so that the new skills and experiences eventually migrate into many classrooms.

“Traditionally, faculty development has been designed by administrators.

Often, teachers have few choices beyond the campus-wide inservice program and subject-area conferences.

These are important but the Priory goes one step beyond. Our professional development plan encourages our teachers to think about their work individually and creatively, based on their individual skills and knowledge.

Projects with measurable ties to classrooms in the next academic year receive priority,’ said Holly Thompson, Academic Dean Benedictine values challenge everyone to be aware of both the needs of the community and the uniqueness of the individual. St. Benedict also believed that, for a teacher, example is more important than words. Measured against these traditions, the Priory’s professional development program provides an anchor for values as well as for academic excellence.

Students who plan college majors in science will have an advantage if they understand complex, state-of-the-art measuring instrumentation. Chemistry teacher David Hall ordered several devices and has integrated them into chem lab work.

The ability to meet and greet, monitor success, express problems without blame, and structure a good discussion are essential academic skills. Mitch Neuger’s sixth graders practice them daily in class meeting. (They can now move their chairs in a circle in about 30 seconds. They know what contributes to a fast time. They plan ahead.).

Donna Wengert-Neff and Tim Mulak The verbal bouquets from Headmaster Tim Molak were as big as the flowers he handed to Donna Wengert-Neff, thanking her for an outstandingly successful evening and fund-raising event.
